  1. In our study, I'm going to reference some charts.

  2. If you have a bulletin already in your hands, you'll see these already and probably have already thought, what in the world are these?

  3. If you don't have one in your hand right now, I think you'll be benefited by having one in your hand.

  4. This will not magically appear on the screen over my left shoulder.

  5. So if you don't have a bulletin and you'd like one, Adam's got a stack of them in the back and he'd be glad to put one in your hand right now.

  6. If you'll raise your hand, he will run around the room and make this happen.

  7. Here's some hands.

  8. Okay, very good, Adam.

  9. Keep him high for him so he can see him.

  10. Don't do a little half elbow hand.

  11. Do a full hand.

  12. Let him get around the room and get him to you.

  13. I believe these will be helpful to you.

  14. I'll do my best to talk about them in such a way that you may not need them, but just in case.

  15. As those are coming around, let me remind you, in last week's text, we were exhorted by James to be quick to hear in verse 19.

  16. And I made the specific case to you that James is telling us to be quick to hear God's word.

  17. There's a broader application to this idea of being quick to hear and slow to speak and slow to anger.

  18. But specifically, he's talking about being quick to hear God's word as he goes on in verse 20 to exhort us to receive with meekness the implanted word.

  19. Two weeks ago, in celebration of Reformation Day, we considered 2 Peter 1, verse 16 through chapter 2 and verse 3,

    2 Peter 1:16

  20. and the need for us always to be reforming by God's word.

  21. To come back to it again and again and again.

  22. Hold up our lives and the function of our church, the light of God's word.

  23. Peter writes in verse 19 of 2 Peter chapter 1,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  24. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  25. So, we will do well to hear God's word and to be transformed by God's word has been the theme that's been kind of picked up over the last couple of weeks.

  26. And today's text continues this line of reasoning.

  27. So, before I read James chapter 1, beginning in verse 22 and following,

    James 1 chapter mention

  28. I remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  29. It has bearing on us today, sitting in this room.

  30. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  31. And so, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  32. James chapter 1, beginning in verse 22.

    James 1 chapter mention

  33. But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

  34. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.

  35. For he looks at himself and goes away at once, forgets what he was like.

  36. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

  37. There are times when we come to a text in God's word and I want to read it and I just want to go, okay, let me read it one more time for you and we'll be done.

  38. And initially, this is kind of the impulse for me of a text like this, right?

  39. Don't just be a hearer, be a doer.

  40. Everybody got it?

  41. And to walk away from it.

  42. But there's a lot to consider and I think there's especially a lot to consider in our age about what a text like this means for the church.

  43. So we are going to study it.

  44. We're going to keep it open and we're going to continue to look at it over the next half hour or so.

  45. James here in this text juxtaposes two types of people.

  46. And notice that they are both hearers of the word.

  47. So they're within the category of those who are hearing the word.

  48. But only one is obedient to the word.

  49. Let's consider this text with a very simple outline.

  50. Number one, the way of the deceived.

  51. And number two, the way of the blessed.

  52. The way of the deceived and the way of the blessed.

  53. So first, the way of the deceived.

  54. James desires that his hearers not be deceived.

  55. And he's giving them instruction to that very end.

  56. So you have to notice just off the cuff that it is possible to be a hearer of the word and to be deceived.

  57. I think he's even suggesting that you can be quick to hear and slow to speak and slow to anger.

  58. That you can sit under the instruction of the word and take the word in and yet be deceived.

  59. Out of great love and out of great care for you, for your soul.

  60. Let me say to you, my friends, it is altogether possible to believe that you are in the faith.

  61. That you have placed your trust in the personal work of Jesus Christ.

  62. But to be deceived.

  63. And we say these kinds of things a lot in the life of our church.

  64. Because we live in an age where it seems that many people are, in fact, deceived.

  65. But I want you to know that we don't do this because we want to cause doubt in your heart.

  66. We want you to have the assurance of your salvation.

  67. We want you to stand confident in Christ.

  68. We don't want you to come here every week and walk away going, I just don't know.

  69. But we want you to know.

  70. And often the warning is not issued.

  71. And so we want to clearly, with great clarity, issue the warning.

  72. It's possible to think you're in the faith and not be in the faith.

  73. We live in an age of cheap grace.

  74. I want to define that term for you.

  75. And I'm going to do it with the one who coined the term.

  76. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was an early 20th century pastor.

  77. You need to learn about him.

  78. He's a wonderful study in history.

  79. And he defines this term cheap grace as opposed to costly grace in his book, The Cost of Discipleship.

  80. So listen to this paragraph from that book.

  81. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance.

  82. Baptism without church discipline.

  83. Communion without confession.

  84. Absolution without personal confession.

  85. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship.

  86. Grace without the cross.

  87. Grace without Jesus Christ living and incarnate.

  88. Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field.

  89. For the sake of it, a man will go and sell all that he has.

  90. It is the pearl of great price to buy, which the merchant will sell all his goods.

  91. It is the kingly rule of Christ.

  92. For whose sake a man will pluck out the eyes, which causes him to stumble.

  93. It is the call of Jesus Christ at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.

  94. To follow Christ is costly.

  95. It requires all of us.

  96. Last week, I rushed through a reading of the parable of the sower from Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  97. Toward the end of the sermon.

  98. I want to put this toward the beginning of our time together today.

  99. And so, if you will, turn with me.

  100. Keep James chapter 1, Mark.

    James 1 chapter mention

  101. We're coming right back to it.

  102. But turn with me to Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  103. And let's take another slightly less hurried look at this text.

  104. Mark chapter 4, verses 3 through 9.

    Mark 4:3–9

  105. Now, as I read this, I will add comments.

  106. But these comments are Jesus' explanation following his telling of this parable.

  107. This is one of those rare parables where he tells us exactly what it means.

  108. And he says this beginning in verse 3 of Mark 4.

  109. Listen.

  110. There's a call right away to be quick to hear.

  111. Listen.

  112. Behold, a sower went out to sow.

  113. And we're told later that the sower is one who's sowing the word.

  114. Who's making a broad gospel call.

  115. Sowing the word.

  116. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path.

  117. And the birds came and devoured it.

  118. So it's seed that never takes root at all.

  119. Satan comes along and snatches it away.

  120. Satan is the father of lies.

  121. So some other lies come in and take the seed of the truth away.

  122. Verse 5.

  123. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it did not have much soil.

  124. And immediately it sprang up since it had no depth of soil.

  125. So there's some apparent growth from this.

  126. But then verse 6 says,

  127. And when the sun rose, it was scorched.

  128. And since it had no root, it withered away.

  129. We're told that the sun is tribulation or trouble and persecution.

  130. So trial comes into the life of this soil.

  131. And it withers.

  132. And it doesn't come back.

  133. Right?

  134. There's no progress.

  135. Verse 7.

  136. Other seed fell among thorns.

  137. And the thorns grew up and choked it.

  138. And it yielded no grain.

  139. And Jesus tells us later that these thorns are the cares and the riches of the world.

  140. And lastly, other seed fell into good soil and produced grain,

  141. growing up and increasing and yielding 30-fold and 60-fold and 100-fold.

  142. And this is the fruit of righteousness.

  143. Right?

  144. People who are producing good works.

  145. And he concludes the parable in verse 9 by saying,

  146. And he who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  147. Be quick to hear.

  148. Understand that it is possible to receive the word and to not bear fruit.

  149. James here in our text, you can go back to James 1,

  150. uses a bit of a parable in warning us not to deceive ourselves.

  151. That's what he's doing in verse 23 and verse 24.

  152. If you're a hearer of the word and not a doer,

  153. if you're not obedient to the word that you hear,

  154. then you're like a man who looks intently at your natural face in a mirror.

  155. You look at your face.

  156. You see your face.

  157. And what does he say happens?

  158. He looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

  159. It doesn't bear any work in your life at all.

  160. Look in the mirror and you forget what you look like.

  161. If we are saved by Christ, right,

  162. we have been made fundamentally new.

  163. We no longer have hearts that are bent toward the world,

  164. toward sinfulness,

  165. towards rebellion against God.

  166. We now have hearts that are bent toward obedience,

  167. toward being his children.

  168. And our lives will, in varying degree,

  169. look different or fundamentally changed.

  170. In the discipline of my children,

  171. I say to them all the time,

  172. you're my kids, right?

  173. And I love you.

  174. And my children want to obey.

  175. My children want to listen to their loving father, right?

  176. They want to be identified with their father and his ways.

  177. And of course, I don't do this perfectly.

  178. But when my children disobey,

  179. I don't reject them as my children.

  180. I don't put them out on the curb with a free child sign around their neck.

  181. But I say to them again,

  182. you're my child.

  183. And my children want to listen to the loving instruction of their father.

  184. Imperfect, but loving instruction.

  185. And beloved, we have a heavenly father

  186. whose instruction is always perfect.

  187. It is never with fail.

  188. It always is the right instruction for us.

  189. And therefore, as his children,

  190. we ought to want to obey.

  191. We'll do it imperfectly,

  192. but we ought to desire

  193. to turn away from the things of this world

  194. and to turn toward God.

  195. If we have been delivered from our bondage to sin,

  196. we will be moved progressively

  197. to look more and more like our Savior

  198. from day to day.

  199. A quotation on your bulletin by Thomas Brooks.

  200. He says,

  201. There is no fear of knowing too much of the Bible.

  202. Right?

  203. Oh, no, the Bible.

  204. Right?

  205. It is a rich, rich book

  206. for our good and for the glory of God.

  207. There is no fear of knowing too much of the Bible, he says,

  208. but there is a great amount of fear

  209. that goes into practicing too little.

  210. Now, I think at this point,

  211. it may be helpful to make careful distinctions

  212. about how we are saved

  213. and how we are kept to the end.

  214. There's always a fear

  215. in talking about sanctification,

  216. which is what we're going to be discussing at length,

  217. of making people believe

  218. that they are saved by their works.

  219. No, you are not saved by your works.

  220. I want to be very clear about that.

  221. No, no, no.

  222. We are saved by the works of another,

  223. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  224. His perfect work,

  225. his sacrificial death.

  226. We cannot be saved by our works.

  227. So you've got to write that big

  228. at the top of your page.

  229. If that's going to be confusing to you

  230. at any point

  231. in the rest of what I'm going to say today,

  232. we cannot be saved by our works.

  233. But our works will give evidence

  234. of our salvation.

  235. Now, to work this out for you a bit,

  236. I'm going to give to you

  237. what is called the ordo salutis

  238. or order of salvation.

  239. We are first elected

  240. before the foundation of the world.

  241. God has chosen people for his glory.

  242. Second, for our benefit,

  243. an atonement was made.

  244. Jesus Christ died in our place,

  245. paid the penalty for our sin.

  246. Third, there's a general gospel call made.

  247. Anybody sitting in this room

  248. who is a Christian heard the gospel,

  249. whether it was proclaimed,

  250. word, or picked up and read

  251. in a track form,

  252. in the scripture itself,

  253. some way the gospel of Jesus Christ

  254. was shared with you.

  255. There was a gospel call made.

  256. And the spirit of Christ

  257. took that gospel call

  258. and made an inward call.

  259. It's step four.

  260. An inward gospel call was made.

  261. And he made your heart new

  262. in the act of regeneration, right?

  263. Caused your heart to be changed

  264. so that, in step six,

  265. you could believe

  266. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  267. You could repent

  268. and place faith in your conversion

  269. in this gospel call.

  270. And at that moment,

  271. step seven,

  272. you were declared by God justified,

  273. declared righteous.

  274. In Christ,

  275. all of your sins forgiven,

  276. all of his righteousness

  277. given to you,

  278. you were justified in him.

  279. Step eight in the Ordo Salutis,

  280. you are sanctified.

  281. And we find in the scripture

  282. three different tenses

  283. for this word.

  284. So I want to be clear about this, right?

  285. There's both a past,

  286. present,

  287. and future use of this word

  288. because to be sanctified

  289. to mean to be declared

  290. holy or set apart.

  291. So there's a past tense to this,

  292. like when you are justified,

  293. you are also sanctified.

  294. You are set apart.

  295. Set apart for God.

  296. But there's also a present reality to that.

  297. We are being set apart.

  298. We are growing in our holiness

  299. in the way in which we represent God.

  300. And this is the most common usage

  301. of this term.

  302. Typically,

  303. when you hear it spoken,

  304. right,

  305. from a stage,

  306. from a pulpit,

  307. we talk about sanctification.

  308. This is what we're talking about,

  309. right?

  310. The life in which we now live.

  311. Having been justified,

  312. we are being sanctified.

  313. And then from time to time,

  314. it'll also be used in a future tense.

  315. We'll be fully and finally set apart one day.

  316. And for that,

  317. we typically use the term glorification,

  318. which is the last step in that, right?

  319. When our body of flesh

  320. will be put off fully,

  321. we'll be delivered completely from sin

  322. when we're in the presence of our Savior.

  323. So election,

  324. atonement,

  325. a general gospel call,

  326. an inward gospel call,

  327. work by the Spirit,

  328. regeneration,

  329. conversion,

  330. which happens with repentance and faith,

  331. justification,

  332. sanctification,

  333. glorification,

  334. right?

  335. So again,

  336. hear me,

  337. we are not saved by our works.

  338. But as a proof that we have been saved

  339. by grace alone,

  340. through faith alone,

  341. in the personal work of Jesus Christ alone,

  342. we will make this evident

  343. by the power of the Spirit,

  344. through progressive sanctification.

  345. There is much well-meaning confusion

  346. about the nature of sanctification,

  347. which is why I want to bring clarity

  348. to the issue, right?

  349. By showing you the five prominent views,

  350. some more prominent than others.

  351. And this is the back of your bulletin.

  352. This is why I think you'll benefit

  353. from having this in your hands.

  354. Please don't see this as a distraction

  355. to the text today, right?

  356. I'm trying to explain to you

  357. why James picks this up,

  358. why he says it's important

  359. that we be doers of the word

  360. and not just hearers, right?

  361. This is all an explanation

  362. of how it is

  363. that we can deceive ourselves.

  364. So first, and quickly,

  365. and I want to say,

  366. I didn't create any of these images.

  367. I don't want to be a plagiarist here.

  368. So if you want to know

  369. where I got these things from,

  370. I'll be happy to send them to you.

  371. I'll send you the article

  372. that they're found in,

  373. explains these things more and more.

  374. So first, the Wesleyan view,

  375. sanctification,

  376. taught originally by John Wesley.

  377. Note, in every one of these diagrams,

  378. the cross is the point of salvation.

  379. That's what it's communicating.

  380. So you'll see first work of grace

  381. in this first one.

  382. Saved by grace, Wesley would have said,

  383. but non-sanctified at this point.

  384. And at some point in the life of a Christian,

  385. there's some crisis of faith

  386. and a second working of grace.

  387. This is what he argued.

  388. And at this point in the Christian's life,

  389. they experience entire sanctification,

  390. or he also called it Christian perfection.

  391. He didn't mean that we were made entirely like Christ,

  392. but that we would put off all known sin.

  393. Still capable of sinning,

  394. but we would put off all known sin.

  395. And in this chart,

  396. the little dotted arrows pointing up and down

  397. means that Wesley would argue

  398. that you could step out of this state of perfection

  399. and then back into this state of perfection.

  400. But it wasn't so much a progress being made,

  401. but an either or.

  402. You're stepping in,

  403. you're stepping out of this position.

  404. Out of this,

  405. I'd suggest to you,

  406. some very unhealthy views of sanctification have come.

  407. I don't know that Wesley would have supported,

  408. but perhaps some who hold this view of sanctification

  409. claim that they haven't sinned in years.

  410. You hear that claim being made.

  411. And I hope that you go,

  412. what?

  413. I've probably sinned,

  414. not known,

  415. in the moment that you've seen me standing on this stage,

  416. that some way my inclinations or my motives

  417. have been wrong in what I've done.

  418. But Wesley brought it down to this very narrow,

  419. known sin category.

  420. And even then,

  421. I would say,

  422. how could you claim

  423. if you're not paying attention,

  424. if you think in years you haven't sinned?

  425. Now,

  426. out of this Wesleyan view,

  427. the Wesleyan view collided with Pentecostalism,

  428. and some other views came about.

  429. I made these small to fit them on the page,

  430. but also because they're kind of subcategories

  431. of this same view of sanctification.

  432. So you have the Keswick view,

  433. which is a region in England.

  434. That's where the name comes from,

  435. the Keswick view.

  436. And in this,

  437. you may have heard this phrase before,

  438. let go and let God.

  439. The key to this view is trusting,

  440. not trying.

  441. In the same way,

  442. you're saved,

  443. but here you're not spirit-filled.

  444. They would call you a defeated Christian.

  445. And I don't know about you,

  446. but when I was converted,

  447. I was in no way defeated.

  448. Christ declared me victorious in him.

  449. They make the distinction

  450. between the carnal person

  451. and the spiritual person.

  452. Again,

  453. another crisis of faith

  454. where a person stops trying so hard

  455. and just lets go

  456. and has God work in them.

  457. Perfection.

  458. Another spirit-filled,

  459. victorious Christian life.

  460. The congregational holiness movement

  461. came out of this.

  462. We have a congregational holiness

  463. congregation that meets

  464. just down the road here.

  465. Free Chapel,

  466. if you're familiar with,

  467. is a congregational holiness church.

  468. I don't know how both of these congregations,

  469. if they hold this view strictly or not,

  470. but this is

  471. the view that birthed

  472. those kinds of movements.

  473. Also,

  474. the Pentecostal view,

  475. right?

  476. You're saved.

  477. This is the first work of grace,

  478. but you're a defeated Christian

  479. at that time

  480. until

  481. you're

  482. filled with the spirit.

  483. You get the spirit baptism,

  484. right?

  485. Many Pentecostals will argue

  486. that's the first time

  487. you receive

  488. the spirit,

  489. that you're evidenced

  490. in

  491. various outward signs

  492. like speaking in tongues

  493. and you live this

  494. victorious Christian life

  495. at that second work

  496. of grace

  497. in your life.

  498. Now,

  499. some of us may encounter people

  500. who are believing these

  501. and may not even know,

  502. right?

  503. Probably few people

  504. would say to you,

  505. oh,

  506. I hold the Keswick view

  507. of sanctification,

  508. but you might see it work in,

  509. maybe even in your own thinking,

  510. the way you ought to live.

  511. I've been saved

  512. by the grace of God.

  513. I ought to live more perfectly

  514. than I'm currently living.

  515. You might have some of this work

  516. inside of your

  517. thought process.

  518. The one I'm more concerned about

  519. tends to be held

  520. more regularly

  521. is the Chaferian view

  522. of sanctification.

  523. This view

  524. comes out of,

  525. there's three prominent

  526. theologians

  527. that have espoused this view.

  528. The primary one

  529. is Lewis Sperry Chafer.

  530. That's the Chaferian view.

  531. And they all

  532. come out of

  533. Dallas Theological Seminary.

  534. Now,

  535. this is a prominent view

  536. in American evangelicalism.

  537. I grew up

  538. in churches

  539. under this view

  540. of sanctification.

  541. We get phrases like

  542. backslidden

  543. and the idea

  544. of rededication

  545. from this view

  546. of sanctification.

  547. You may be

  548. more familiar with it

  549. than you

  550. realize.

  551. This view

  552. divides up

  553. mankind

  554. into three different categories.

  555. First,

  556. the natural

  557. or unconverted

  558. man.

  559. second,

  560. the carnal,

  561. which is the converted

  562. but not spirit-filled

  563. man.

  564. Again,

  565. the term defeated

  566. is often

  567. used in this case.

  568. This is a person

  569. that accepts

  570. Christ

  571. as Savior.

  572. This view

  573. would argue

  574. that you can make

  575. a profession

  576. of faith in Christ

  577. most typically

  578. during an invitation.

  579. So you've walked

  580. an aisle,

  581. you've signed

  582. a card,

  583. and they want

  584. to give you assurance

  585. at that moment.

  586. So you've accepted

  587. Christ as your Savior,

  588. but

  589. you've not

  590. accepted Him

  591. as your Lord.

  592. They draw a distinction

  593. between the two.

  594. You can have Jesus

  595. as Savior

  596. and not as Lord,

  597. but there will be

  598. some crisis of faith

  599. in your life

  600. where you really

  601. dedicate yourself

  602. to this.

  603. And at that point,

  604. they would call you

  605. spirit-filled,

  606. at which point

  607. you begin this process

  608. of bit by bit

  609. by bit growing

  610. in holiness.

  611. A little more tomorrow

  612. than the day

  613. before.

  614. Now,

  615. perhaps I need

  616. a doctorate

  617. to understand

  618. the arguments

  619. of the Chaferian view.

  620. And perhaps

  621. that doctorate

  622. would have to come

  623. from Dallas

  624. Theological Seminary.

  625. But I want to suggest

  626. that if I am

  627. quick to hear

  628. and slow to speak,

  629. that the Bible

  630. makes it plain

  631. that we are to have,

  632. if we're going to have

  633. Jesus as our Savior,

  634. then He must

  635. also be our Lord.

  636. I love the doctrine

  637. of the perspicuity

  638. of Scripture,

  639. the clarity

  640. of the Bible.

  641. So let me just read

  642. to you a couple of texts.

  643. Jesus said

  644. in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  645. and verse 15,

  646. this Jesus

  647. that we're talking about,

  648. He said,

  649. if you love Me,

  650. you will keep

  651. My commandments.

  652. How do we have

  653. Jesus as Savior?

  654. Certainly we love

  655. Him as Savior.

  656. He saved my soul

  657. and suggests

  658. that we don't

  659. then have to keep

  660. His commandments.

  661. If we love Christ,

  662. we love His commandments.

  663. He must be our Savior

  664. and our Lord.

  665. God bless you

  666. The Apostle Peter

  667. wrote in 2 Peter chapter 1

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  668. and verse 10,

  669. Therefore,

  670. brothers,

  671. be all the more diligent

  672. to confirm your calling

  673. and election.

  674. And this is on the tail

  675. of a bunch of qualities

  676. that should be exhibited

  677. in the life of a Christian.

  678. For if you practice

  679. these qualities,

  680. you will never fall.

  681. James,

  682. the brother of Jesus,

  683. wrote further

  684. in this letter

  685. that we're studying

  686. in James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  687. and verse 14,

  688. What good is it,

  689. my brothers,

  690. if someone says

  691. he has faith

  692. but does not have works?

  693. Seems very clear to me.

  694. As if he's saying,

  695. What good is it,

  696. my brothers,

  697. if someone says

  698. he has Jesus as Savior

  699. but not as Lord?

  700. Can that faith

  701. save him?

  702. James asks

  703. and he'll go on

  704. to argue

  705. that it can't.

  706. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  707. and verse 20,

  708. Do you want to be shown,

  709. you foolish person,

  710. that faith,

  711. apart from works,

  712. is useless?

  713. The Apostle John

  714. wrote in 1 John chapter 2

    1 John 2:15

  715. verse 15

  716. and following,

  717. Do not love the world

  718. or the things in the world.

  719. If anyone loves the world,

  720. the love of the Father

  721. is not

  722. in him.

  723. For all there's in the world

  724. the desires of the flesh

  725. and the desires of the eyes

  726. and pride of life

  727. is not from the Father

  728. but is from

  729. the world.

  730. And in 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  731. in verse 3,

  732. John writes,

  733. This is the love of God

  734. that we keep

  735. his commandments

  736. and his commandments

  737. are not

  738. burdensome.

  739. Many years ago

  740. in the life

  741. of this church

  742. I had a young man

  743. who was a

  744. college student

  745. at the time

  746. walk up to me

  747. and said,

  748. My father is furious

  749. with you.

  750. This is not a thing

  751. you want to hear

  752. a college student

  753. say,

  754. although it's not

  755. the only time

  756. I've heard it.

  757. I said,

  758. Really?

  759. Why?

  760. And he said,

  761. You're a heretic

  762. because you believe

  763. in lordship salvation.

  764. And I had no concept.

  765. I was like,

  766. I don't know

  767. what that even means.

  768. And so I said to him,

  769. Well,

  770. I'm going to go look

  771. into that.

  772. If I've erred in any way

  773. I certainly want to be

  774. made aware of it.

  775. I don't want to teach

  776. a heresy

  777. in the church.

  778. So I went to my computer

  779. that afternoon

  780. and I typed in

  781. lordship salvation

  782. and very quickly

  783. within a few moments

  784. went,

  785. Oh,

  786. Oh yeah,

  787. I totally believe

  788. this to be the case.

  789. If we're to have

  790. Jesus as our savior,

  791. he must be our Lord.

  792. He's going to work in us

  793. not with perfection.

  794. Don't hear me say that.

  795. I'm not saying I'm perfect.

  796. That's not what I'm saying.

  797. But if Jesus is my savior,

  798. I will desire

  799. to grow in holiness.

  800. I want to honor him.

  801. I want to listen

  802. to his good commands.

  803. So the next Lord's day,

  804. I went to this young man

  805. and I said,

  806. Yep,

  807. I would suggest to you

  808. that I am not a heretic,

  809. but that is what I believe

  810. to be true.

  811. And I turned to first John

  812. chapter five in verse three.

  813. This is the love of God

  814. that we keep his commandments

  815. and his commandments

  816. are not burdensome.

  817. And I'm very grateful

  818. that this young guy

  819. searched out the scripture

  820. and stayed with our church

  821. until he moved away

  822. and he is our accountant

  823. for our church

  824. to this day.

  825. Right?

  826. So if Jesus is our Lord,

  827. we will be pursuing holiness.

  828. Right?

  829. We will find this miraculous work

  830. in us

  831. that we'll want to turn away

  832. from the things of the world

  833. and turn toward

  834. the things of God.

  835. But we don't do this

  836. immediately.

  837. We don't do this

  838. with perfection.

  839. John also wrote

  840. in first John chapter one

  841. and verse eight,

  842. if we say we have no sin,

  843. we deceive ourselves

  844. and the truth

  845. is not in us.

  846. Right?

  847. So James warns us

  848. that we ought to be very careful

  849. not to deceive ourselves.

  850. Right?

  851. That we ought to be doers

  852. of this word.

  853. We ought to love

  854. the commands of God

  855. and want to follow God.

  856. John also says,

  857. but don't be deceived

  858. and think that you

  859. don't have

  860. sin.

  861. So we must be careful.

  862. Do not be deceived.

  863. We're going to be told

  864. verse 25

  865. that we're to persevere.

  866. We're to continue

  867. to follow.

  868. That it's going to take

  869. effort on our part.

  870. And we do not do this alone.

  871. This is why you need

  872. the church.

  873. The greatest affirmations

  874. my salvation

  875. is that I have a group

  876. of people

  877. that I walk together with.

  878. A group of people

  879. who are looking

  880. into my life.

  881. A group of people

  882. who bring to me

  883. loving correction

  884. when I'm at fault.

  885. That I might repent

  886. and continue

  887. to pursue

  888. Christ.

  889. We need the spirit.

  890. We need the word.

  891. We need

  892. one another.

  893. Be careful.

  894. Do not be

  895. deceived.

  896. It is very possible

  897. to be a hearer

  898. of the word

  899. and to think

  900. that you're a Christian

  901. and your life

  902. looks nothing

  903. like the word.

  904. Don't be deceived.

  905. Help others

  906. not to be

  907. deceived.

  908. So this is the

  909. way of the deceived.

  910. Right?

  911. Always hearing,

  912. never acting.

  913. But we also see

  914. the way of the

  915. blessed.

  916. He says,

  917. but the one who looks

  918. into the perfect law

  919. and this word,

  920. this Greek word

  921. looks means gaze.

  922. It's a deep gazing.

  923. Right?

  924. It's not merely

  925. a quick glance.

  926. It's a staring

  927. within the perfect

  928. law.

  929. Right?

  930. The commands

  931. given to us.

  932. The law of liberty.

  933. The gospel of Jesus

  934. Christ that sets us

  935. free from bondage

  936. to having to earn

  937. our acceptance

  938. before God.

  939. But the law of liberty

  940. that sets us free

  941. from that.

  942. Sets us free

  943. from having to

  944. earn salvation,

  945. which we cannot do.

  946. But a glorious law

  947. that we get to follow

  948. now out of grateful

  949. obedience to what

  950. God has done

  951. for us.

  952. So the one who does

  953. this,

  954. who looks intently

  955. into this law

  956. and perseveres

  957. in it,

  958. who continues

  959. to work,

  960. to labor,

  961. being no hearer

  962. who forgets,

  963. but a doer

  964. who acts.

  965. He will be,

  966. there's this blessing

  967. declared,

  968. blessed.

  969. He will be blessed.

  970. In his doing.

  971. So this brings us

  972. on the back of your bulletin

  973. to this final view,

  974. which is most common

  975. called the reformed view.

  976. And just to be fair,

  977. I put that on the sheet,

  978. but I really just wanted

  979. to say the biblical view.

  980. I really make good effort

  981. at being kind-hearted

  982. to people that I disagree with.

  983. And I disagree,

  984. I disagree

  985. with the Chafferian view

  986. because I think

  987. that it's damning

  988. to people.

  989. I think there are people

  990. who think they're Christians

  991. and they're fine

  992. with that Jesus

  993. is Savior piece.

  994. They're okay with that.

  995. They're like,

  996. yeah, yeah,

  997. got the Jesus is Savior

  998. part of this

  999. and I'm good.

  1000. And they think

  1001. they're in the faith

1002. and they're not in the faith.

  1003. They're deceiving

  1004. themselves

  1005. and they're being deceived.

  1006. So,

  1007. the biblical view

  1008. of sanctification.

  1009. When we are saved,

  1010. which is entirely

  1011. a work of God,

1012. we did nothing to earn it.

  1013. We could do nothing

  1014. to earn it.

1015. We were dead in our sin.

  1016. He made us alive

  1017. in Christ.

  1018. We're submitting to him

  1019. both as Savior

  1020. and Lord.

1021. And we don't do this perfectly.

  1022. We still carry around

1023. the baggage of our flesh.

  1024. We have new hearts

1025. but we still have our flesh.

1026. And our flesh just loves sin

1027. but our new hearts do not.

  1028. So,

  1029. it's the work of a Christian

  1030. as an individual

1031. and a Christian in community

1032. to take a careful look

  1033. of our lives,

  1034. to make our calling

  1035. and election sure,

  1036. to be constantly looking

  1037. and assessing

1038. and not in an obsessive way,

  1039. but to ask,

1040. am I growing in holiness?

1041. Do I see an improvement

  1042. within me?

1043. Do I love the things

  1044. of the world

1045. or do I love the things

  1046. of God?

  1047. When I sin,

  1048. am I hardened

  1049. to that sin?

1050. Or do I hate that sin?

  1051. Do I want

  1052. to put it off

  1053. and put on

  1054. righteousness?

  1055. Do I see

  1056. the Spirit of God

  1057. active

1058. and at work in me?

  1059. Right?

1060. As I take up the word,

  1061. am I being a doer

  1062. of the word?

  1063. This view

  1064. of sanctification

  1065. is synergistic.

  1066. It takes effort

  1067. on our part.

  1068. We don't let go

  1069. and let God.

  1070. We continue to work.

1071. We pick up the daily things

1072. that we ought to do.

  1073. The habits of grace.

  1074. The things that God

  1075. has given to us

  1076. to grow in Him.

  1077. And we press

  1078. and we press

  1079. and we press

  1080. recognizing all along

  1081. anything good

  1082. that we accomplish

  1083. is a work

  1084. of the Spirit

  1085. in our lives.

  1086. Bringing about obedience

  1087. bit by bit

  1088. by bit.

  1089. We ask others

  1090. to examine our lives.

  1091. Brother,

  1092. what do you think?

1093. Am I in the faith?

  1094. Do you see me

  1095. growing in Christ?

1096. When we have our doubts,

1097. we look to our brothers.

  1098. Brother?

  1099. Sister?

1100. Am I in the faith?

  1101. I've given much counsel

1102. over the past decade plus

  1103. to people

1104. who are doubting to say,

  1105. oh,

1106. but I've watched your life

  1107. over these past years.

  1108. And you love

  1109. the things of God.

  1110. You are growing

  1111. in your faith.

  1112. Jesus tells a parable

  1113. in Matthew chapter 21

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  1114. beginning in verse 28

  1115. and following.

  1116. He says,

  1117. what do you think?

1118. A man had two sons

1119. and he went to the first

  1120. and said,

  1121. son,

  1122. go and work

  1123. in the vineyard today.

  1124. And he answered,

  1125. I will not.

  1126. But afterward,

  1127. he changed his mind

  1128. and he went.

1129. So he heard the word

  1130. and eventually

  1131. he was obedient

  1132. to the word.

  1133. And he went

  1134. to the other son

  1135. and said the same.

  1136. And he answered,

  1137. I go, sir,

  1138. but did not go.

1139. So he heard the word,

1140. but he was not obedient

  1141. to the word.

  1142. Jesus asked,

  1143. which of the two

  1144. did the will

  1145. of his father?

  1146. And they said,

  1147. these are the Pharisees,

  1148. the first,

  1149. Jesus said to them,

1150. truly I say to you,

  1151. the tax collectors

  1152. and the prostitutes

  1153. go into the kingdom

  1154. of God before you.

  1155. Hated,

  1156. hated people

  1157. by the Pharisees.

1158. For John came to you

1159. in the way of righteousness

1160. and you did not believe him.

  1161. But the tax collectors

  1162. and the prostitutes

  1163. believed him.

1164. And even when you saw it,

  1165. you did not afterward

  1166. change your minds

  1167. and believe him.

  1168. Our belief

  1169. is evidenced

  1170. by our obedience.

  1171. Hear that.

  1172. Oh, hear that.

  1173. Do not be deceived.

  1174. Hear James' exhortation

  1175. one more time.

  1176. So at the beginning,

  1177. I said,

1178. I just wanted to read it

  1179. and say, okay,

1180. I'll read it one more time.

1181. Well, I said a bunch of things

1182. and now let me read it

  1183. one more time.

1184. But be doers of the word

  1185. and not hearers only

  1186. deceiving yourselves.

1187. For if anyone is a hearer

  1188. of the word

  1189. and not a doer,

1190. he is like a man

  1191. who looks intently

  1192. at his natural face

  1193. in a mirror.

1194. For he looks at himself

  1195. and goes away

  1196. and at once forgets

  1197. what he was like.

1198. But the one who looks

  1199. into the perfect law,

  1200. the law of liberty,

  1201. and perseveres,

  1202. being no hearer

  1203. who forgets

1204. but a doer who acts,

  1205. he will be blessed

  1206. in his doing.

  1207. Let's pray together.
