  1. And turn back to the book of James. We're going to be continuing right where we left off last week.

  2. In chapter 3, starting in verse 3.

  3. As advertised by Nathan last week, I'll be continuing right where we left off, continuing this discussion that James is giving on controlling our tongues.

  4. As many of you know, my firstborn just came into the world four weeks ago as of today.

  5. So as you can imagine, I'm pretty tired.

  6. So if I start to slur or whatever, I'm sorry.

  7. But also because of that, last week I came here and I volunteered for band, which I probably shouldn't have.

  8. Because I was pretty tired by the time the service came around.

  9. So I was pretty much asleep during the whole sermon.

  10. Not because it was boring. I was just that exhausted.

  11. The only part I remember was Nathan saying, hint, hint, Zach.

  12. So I remember it because it woke me up.

  13. But I want to tell you now, I have no idea what that hint was.

  14. But all joking aside, I did check with him.

  15. And to be honest, it really wasn't much of a hint.

  16. So I mean, I guess I could have just kept saying, I don't know.

  17. But anyways, we'll be picking up in James chapter three, starting verse three through 12.

  18. That's our text for this morning.

  19. But I'm going to start by reading in verse one for continuity sake.

  20. So James writes,

  21. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers.

  22. For you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

  23. For we all stumble in many ways.

  24. If anyone does not stumble in what he says,

  25. he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

  26. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us,

  27. we guide their whole bodies as well.

  28. Look at the ships also.

  29. Though they are so large and are driven by strong winds,

  30. they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

  31. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

  32. How great a fire is set ablaze by such a small fire.

  33. And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

  34. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body,

  35. setting on fire the entire course of life and set on fire by hell.

  36. For every kind of beast and bird of reptile and sea creature can be tamed

  37. and has been tamed by mankind.

  38. But no human being can tame the tongue.

  39. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

  40. With it we bless our Lord and Father,

  41. and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

  42. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

  43. Brothers, these things ought not be so.

  44. Does the spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?

  45. Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs?

  46. Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

  47. So our outline today is not so much a series of points.

  48. Today we're going to be looking at this text more so observationally.

  49. So I have three observations.

  50. I'm not entirely sure what the difference is there,

  51. but this is two hours sleep brain thinking.

  52. But three observations.

  53. And the first one being the influence and power of the tongue.

  54. The second one being the duality of the Christ proclaimer who does not control his tongue.

  55. And third, the lack of a solution to controlling the tongue within ourselves.

  56. So I'm going to repeat those later on as we work through this.

  57. But just considering that first observation,

  58. the influence and power of the tongue.

  59. The influence and the power of the tongue.

  60. So we're going to see this in verses 2 through 8.

  61. So James gives us a few images to depict the influence and power of the tongue.

  62. And the first is of a horse.

  63. He says, if we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us,

  64. we guide their whole bodies.

  65. In verse 3.

  66. I don't know how many of you are familiar with horses.

  67. I'm by no means an expert, but I've ridden two or three times in my life.

  68. The bit is what you put in their mouth.

  69. You control it with the reins.

  70. You yank it to the right, they go right.

  71. You yank it to the left, they go left.

  72. Right?

  73. You've probably seen it in a movie or something like that.

  74. And so it's painful.

  75. It's a process because the horse wants to direct itself.

  76. It wants to do what it wants to do.

  77. And an untamed horse will fight against your will ferociously.

  78. He'll jump around and he'll try to buck you off.

  79. He does not want to be controlled.

  80. So this is an image the people of the first century world would know well.

  81. And the second image is an image of a ship.

  82. He writes in verse 4,

  83. Look at the ships also.

  84. Though they are so large and are driven by strong winds,

  85. they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

  86. Again, this image is very similar to our first image.

  87. We have a ship, a large ship.

  88. A ship that requires strong winds to be moved.

  89. But what's amazing about this ship that's so large and needs such strong winds to be moved

  90. is that neither of those things determine the direction of the ship.

  91. The direction of the ship is determined by the smallest part of it, the rudder.

  92. It's on the back end of a ship.

  93. You turn it, sometimes with wheels, sometimes with a stick.

  94. It tells you where you go.

  95. So the tongue, of course, is meant to be read into this.

  96. It's the bit.

  97. It's the rudder.

  98. That's what these images are depicting,

  99. which is why he says in the first half of verse 5,

  100. So also the tongue is a small member,

  101. just like the rudder, just like the bit.

  102. A small member, yet it boasts of great things.

  103. So the tongue is one of the smallest members of our body,

  104. yet it influences more of our life in its direction than any other part of the body.

  105. That's not to say it's the controlling member, which we'll see momentarily,

  106. but the tongue's influence is vast.

  107. And picking back up in the second half of verse 5,

  108. James writes,

  109. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire.

  110. An entire forest consumed by this fire, consumed by this tongue.

  111. So the image here is of a kindling small fire,

  112. a fire growing to consume a great or large forest.

  113. So James is shifting from talking about the influence of the tongue,

  114. and now he's talking about its power,

  115. what it can accomplish or destroy in this case.

  116. In the first two images,

  117. the potential influence by the tongue is considerable,

  118. given a small bit and a small rudder.

  119. But now the power and its destructive capabilities.

  120. It consumes this forest.

  121. This forest is not going to bear fruit.

  122. This forest is not going to provide shade.

  123. This forest is not going to allow for materials like wood to be harvested.

  124. There's no profit left in this forest

  125. because it is utterly destroyed by the uncontrolled tongue.

  126. Now, you might think this is an overreaction to the tongue on James' part.

  127. At worst, it's just words, as some may say.

  128. And James gets away from the similes that we've been reading in verses 3 through 5,

  129. and in verse 6 states in plain and matter-of-fact language,

  130. he says in verse 6,

  131. And the tongue is a world of unrighteousness.

  132. The tongue is set among our members.

  133. It is staining the whole body.

  134. It is setting on fire the entire course of life,

  135. and it is set on fire by hell.

  136. All right, so we're getting into the meat of it,

  137. and there are three things here to consider.

  138. So the tongue is a world of unrighteousness,

  139. which is why it stains the whole body.

  140. So recall from week 1,

  141. I preached on James 1, verse 1 through 4,

    James 1:1–4

  142. and I talked at length about the importance of these words,

  143. whole and perfect,

  144. especially throughout the book of James.

  145. And here, one of those words comes up again,

  146. whole.

  147. This means in entirety.

  148. Not one aspect is left out.

  149. And earlier in the book of James,

  150. he tells us that we are given trial

  151. so that we may become whole,

  152. lacking in nothing.

  153. But in our text today,

  154. he is saying that by our tongues alone,

  155. our wholeness or our entirety is stained and unrighteous.

  156. So there's a tension in reading this.

  157. There's some difficulty.

  158. How does this all work out?

  159. How does it equal zero, right?

  160. How does this sum up?

  161. And again, we'll come back to this tension in a moment.

  162. But the second thing is that the tongue sets on fire

  163. the entire course of life.

  164. Here we see what the tongue destroys.

  165. It destroys our very lives.

  166. How many times have you spoken,

  167. and it led to strife, anger, fights, quarrels, you name it.

  168. And I can recall times in my life where I or others

  169. have said things intentionally to hurt somebody.

  170. So those are the easy ones to think of.

  171. Like, oh yeah, I can see where that's possible.

  172. But I am even more amazed at the number of times

  173. I said something or somebody I know

  174. has said something,

  175. totally good intentions,

  176. no ill will,

  177. not even any kind of,

  178. I don't know,

  179. volatile language or anything like that.

  180. And yet there was strife,

  181. yet there was anger,

  182. yet there was bitterness

  183. that came up unintentionally or unintentionally.

  184. But again, that image of a fire,

  185. it's really perfect in capturing the tongue.

  186. There it is.

  187. And to be frank,

  188. if you don't understand how destructive your tongue is,

  189. how destructive it can be,

  190. whether willfully or unwillfully,

  191. it's only because you haven't paid attention

  192. a day in your life.

  193. I mean, almost every day,

  194. I'm having to clarify something,

  195. rehash something,

  196. reiterate something,

  197. repeat something,

  198. redact something,

  199. contrast.

  200. And these are just some of the verbs

  201. we have in our language

  202. to describe the editing process.

  203. So that gives you an idea

  204. of just how often

  205. we are having to go back,

  206. to clear up,

  207. to clarify.

  208. And to inject all that back into James' imagery

  209. is as if we are constantly trying

  210. to put fires out,

  211. caused by our own words.

  212. Again, whether intentional or unintentional.

  213. Not one aspect of our life

  214. is unaffected by the words we say.

  215. Not one.

  216. And thirdly,

  217. the source of the tongue's fire

  218. is hell itself,

  219. which we see at the end of verse 6.

  220. And that's kind of a weird phrase,

  221. isn't it?

  222. You might think like me

  223. when I first read it,

  224. I thought,

  225. well, God rules in hell.

  226. He punishes the wicked in hell.

  227. So is James saying,

  228. our tongue is set on fire by God?

  229. Like, that doesn't make sense.

  230. Earlier he said,

  231. no one can be tempted by God.

  232. But the actual word here is Gehenna.

  233. It's not hell,

  234. it's Gehenna,

  235. which is a real place in Israel.

  236. Sometimes it's slang,

  237. so to speak, for hell.

  238. Sometimes people use that

  239. as a word for that.

  240. But oftentimes,

  241. it just means plain old Gehenna.

  242. And I think this is one of those cases.

  243. And in the Jewish world,

  244. Gehenna was a place

  245. where trash was burnt,

  246. which is why it often evoked hell

  247. symbolically for the people.

  248. But it also was a place

  249. known for cultic worship

  250. and became a symbol

  251. of demonic activity

  252. to the Jewish people.

  253. throughout the Old Testament,

  254. many Israelites who abandoned God

  255. gave into worshiping the pagan god,

  256. Moloch.

  257. Worship of Moloch

  258. typically included child sacrifice,

  259. and Gehenna became a popular place

  260. for such sacrifice.

  261. In 2 Kings 16, 1-4,

  262. we see King Ahaz,

  263. king of Israel,

  264. sacrifice his son to Moloch,

  265. and it is assumed

  266. that that happened in Gehenna.

  267. And likewise,

  268. King Manasseh soon after

  269. was recorded as having done

  270. much the same.

  271. In 2 Kings 21, 6,

  272. which says,

  273. So notice all that

  274. cultic, demonic activity.

  275. The mediums,

  276. the necromancers,

  277. the fortune tellers,

  278. the omens.

  279. This worship of Moloch

  280. and Gehenna

  281. became such a recurring issue

  282. that God pronounced judgment

  283. on the people and the place.

  284. in Jeremiah 7, 30-34,

  285. by declaring that

  286. in latter days,

  287. Gehenna will be known

  288. as the Valley of Slaughter

  289. because he will use Babylon

  290. to slaughter many Israelites

  291. in that area.

  292. So I say all that to say,

  293. this is a well-known place

  294. to your Jew in the first century.

  295. They know this place.

  296. It has well-established connotations.

  297. Any Jew in James' time

  298. would immediately think

  299. of such things.

  300. And this all relates

  301. to James' argument

  302. because he is saying

  303. that the source

  304. of our tongue's fire

  305. is earthly,

  306. it's demonic,

  307. it's ungodly.

  308. It's not of God.

  309. It is the influence

  310. of the world

  311. and the demons

  312. that work in it.

  313. In other words,

  314. it is evil.

  315. Not only this,

  316. but James is again

  317. alluding to the sermon

  318. on the mount.

  319. in Matthew 5, 22,

  320. Jesus is correcting

  321. everyone's understanding

  322. of the law

  323. regarding murder,

  324. a serious sin.

  325. And Jesus says,

  326. but I say to you

  327. that everyone

  328. who is angry

  329. with his brother

  330. will be liable

  331. to judgment.

  332. And catch this,

  333. whoever insults

  334. his brother

  335. will be liable

  336. to the council.

  337. And whoever says,

  338. i.e. the tongue,

  339. whoever says,

  340. you fool,

  341. will be liable

  342. to hell.

  343. Or there's that word again,

  344. Gehenna, right?

  345. will be liable

  346. to the hell of fire.

  347. So there is

  348. an implicit warning

  349. in James' statement.

  350. Essentially,

  351. he's saying,

  352. if you let your tongue

  353. loose and consume

  354. everything around you

  355. by its fire,

  356. then you too

  357. will perish

  358. by fire.

  359. So to wrap up

  360. the discussion

  361. on the influence

  362. and the power

  363. of the tongue,

  364. James makes

  365. another argument.

  366. He contrasts

  367. controlling the tongue

  368. with controlling

  369. the wild animal kingdom.

  370. And it's so interesting

  371. what he says,

  372. picking back up

  373. in verse 7.

  374. He says,

  375. for every kind

  376. of beast and bird,

  377. of reptile and sea creature,

  378. can be tamed

  379. and has been tamed

  380. by mankind.

  381. He's referring to the garden

  382. when Adam named

  383. all the animals.

  384. But he goes on,

  385. but no human being

  386. can tame the tongue.

  387. It is a restless evil

  388. full of deadly poison.

  389. It takes a lot of work,

  390. it takes a lot of skill,

  391. it takes a lot of time,

  392. but mankind can

  393. and has tamed

  394. all the animal kingdom,

  395. according to James.

  396. But the taming

  397. of the tongue

  398. is even harder,

  399. so much so

  400. that it is impossible

  401. to tame the tongue.

  402. As James says

  403. at the outset

  404. of our text,

  405. which Nathan preached

  406. last week,

  407. if anyone does not stumble

  408. in what he says,

  409. he is a perfect man,

  410. able also to bridle

  411. his whole body.

  412. Meaning,

  413. if you can beat your tongue,

  414. if you can control it perfectly,

  415. there's no other temptation

  416. that will take you over.

  417. This is difficult.

  418. If you beat the big baddie,

  419. you can beat all the little baddies,

  420. right?

  421. That's kind of the idea here.

  422. If you control the tongue,

  423. you can control everything.

  424. So that man would be perfect,

  425. but that man,

  426. James is implying,

  427. does not exist

  428. apart from Christ.

  429. The tongue cannot be tamed,

  430. and it is an unrelenting,

  431. restless,

  432. evil,

  433. poisonous,

  434. and leading to death.

  435. So the tongue has

  436. massive influence

  437. and massive power.

  438. The potential for damage

  439. that a fully loose tongue

  440. can inflict

  441. is unimaginable.

  442. And now,

  443. James is going to continue

  444. speaking about the tongue

  445. and its dangers

  446. with one last critique,

  447. but there is a subtle shift

  448. in what James is addressing.

  449. He was addressing

  450. the tongue itself,

  451. as we have seen,

  452. but now,

  453. he's addressing

  454. the one who professes

  455. to be a Christian,

  456. but whose tongue runs wild.

  457. And we observe this

  458. in verses 9 through 10,

  459. which leads us

  460. to the second observation,

  461. observation number two,

  462. the duality

  463. of the Christ-proclaimer

  464. who does not control

  465. his tongue.

  466. That's long,

  467. so I'll repeat that.

  468. The duality

  469. of the Christ-proclaimer

  470. who does not control

  471. his tongue.

  472. So, picking back up

  473. in verse 9,

  474. James says,

  475. with it,

  476. referring to the tongue,

  477. with the tongue,

  478. we bless our Lord

  479. and Father.

  480. We bless him.

  481. Oh, that's nice.

  482. And with it,

  483. we curse people

  484. who are made

  485. in the likeness of God.

  486. That sounds so nice.

  487. And from the same mouth

  488. come blessing

  489. and cursing.

  490. My brothers,

  491. these things

  492. ought not be so.

  493. I've talked much

  494. about the concept

  495. of bless and blessing,

  496. so I'll forego

  497. explaining that in depth,

  498. but suffice it to say,

  499. James is saying

  500. we wish well things

  501. toward God

  502. in a general sense,

  503. right?

  504. It's goodwill,

  505. right,

  506. towards God.

  507. But the idea of cursing

  508. I've not had a chance

  509. yet to talk about.

  510. So to us,

  511. cursing,

  512. it's kind of lost

  513. its meaning

  514. that it would have had

  515. in the ancient world.

  516. To us,

  517. you know,

  518. we think of like

  519. witches turning

  520. some princess

  521. into a frog,

  522. like,

  523. oh,

  524. cursed,

  525. you know.

  526. But in the ancient world,

  527. cursing carried one idea.

  528. It carried,

  529. I want you to be

  530. totally cut off

  531. from God

  532. in any and all blessing

  533. and I want you

  534. to be tormented

  535. in hell for eternity.

  536. It's the worst thing

  537. you could possibly say

  538. to somebody.

  539. There's no greater threat,

  540. there's no greater

  541. expression of ill will.

  542. So he's saying,

  543. on the one hand,

  544. you bless God,

  545. but at the same time,

  546. you curse his image bearers

  547. to hell for eternity.

  548. So it's serious.

  549. This is not a light

  550. thing to say.

  551. So this person

  552. that James is describing

  553. wants to bless God

  554. with his lips,

  555. but he wants to curse

  556. God's image bearers

  557. to hell.

  558. So what does he want?

  559. Does he want to bless God

  560. or does he want to curse people?

  561. Like,

  562. is that tension

  563. with one another?

  564. These are two

  565. contrary things.

  566. So these people

  567. that James describes

  568. are hypocrites

  569. in the full sense

  570. of the word.

  571. And when you really

  572. consider the kind

  573. of person

  574. that James is describing,

  575. this person seems crazy.

  576. Or in James' words,

  577. he would call this person

  578. double-minded.

  579. The double-minded man

  580. is a concept

  581. that James deals with

  582. throughout his letter.

  583. And we saw this already

  584. in James 1.8

  585. where the double-minded man

  586. is one who doubts God.

  587. He tries to live

  588. for both God

  589. and the world

  590. and is, quote,

  591. unstable in all his ways.

  592. We're going to see

  593. the double-minded man

  594. again in a couple weeks

  595. in James 4.8.

  596. James brings up

  597. the double-minded man

  598. again

  599. and it becomes

  600. abundantly clear

  601. that only false believers

  602. are double-minded.

  603. He's not addressing

  604. weak Christians

  605. in our passage today

  606. but warning his brothers

  607. of false Christians.

  608. This man is double-minded

  609. in our passage

  610. that he's describing.

  611. He wants to bless God

  612. but curse God's image.

  613. And if you recall

  614. Christ's teaching

  615. from the Gospel of Luke,

    Luke 6:28

  616. chapter 6, verse 28,

  617. Jesus commanded

  618. his disciples,

  619. bless those

  620. who curse you.

  621. Pray for those

  622. who abuse you.

  623. So the man

  624. with the uncontrolled tongue

  625. in James

  626. is not even cursing

  627. those who curse him.

  628. He's just cursing people

  629. seemingly arbitrarily.

  630. Definitely not

  631. a believer.

  632. And as James says

  633. in verse 10,

  634. my brothers,

  635. he's shifting address,

  636. my brothers,

  637. these things

  638. ought not be so.

  639. How can they be so?

  640. I thought James said

  641. it was impossible.

  642. So the tension

  643. that I mentioned

  644. a while ago,

  645. it's here again

  646. and I promise

  647. we will resolve

  648. that tension in a moment.

  649. James is building it

  650. a little longer

  651. and so we're compelled

  652. to do the same.

  653. And so one final

  654. stab at it

  655. with our third

  656. and final observation

  657. this morning.

  658. There is no solution

  659. to controlling

  660. the tongue

  661. within ourselves.

  662. Observation number three,

  663. there is no solution

  664. to controlling

  665. the tongue

  666. within ourselves.

  667. So let's look

  668. at the imagery here

  669. in verses 11 through 12.

  670. James continues on,

  671. does a spring

  672. pour forth

  673. from the same opening

  674. both fresh

  675. and salt water?

  676. Can a fig tree,

  677. my brothers,

  678. bare olives

  679. or a grapevine

  680. produce figs?

  681. Neither can a salt pond

  682. yield

  683. fresh

  684. water.

  685. So in case anyone

  686. is wondering

  687. the answer

  688. to these questions

  689. that James asked,

  690. the answers are

  691. no,

  692. no,

  693. and no.

  694. It's all impossible.

  695. Essentially,

  696. James asks on repeat,

  697. can good things

  698. produce bad things

  699. or can bad things

  700. produce good things?

  701. And this is another

  702. allusion to the

  703. Sermon on the Mount.

  704. And if you're still

  705. questioning the idea

  706. that James is addressing

  707. false believers

  708. in our text,

  709. this quotation

  710. from Jesus

  711. that I think

  712. James is alluding

  713. to furthers

  714. the point.

  715. So Matthew 7,

    Matthew 7:15–20

  716. verse 15 through 20,

  717. Jesus says,

  718. beware of

  719. false prophets.

  720. False prophets

  721. who come to you

  722. in sheep's clothing

  723. but inwardly

  724. are ravenous wolves.

  725. These are

  726. false believers

  727. pretending to be

  728. in the church.

  729. And Jesus goes on,

  730. you will recognize them

  731. by their fruits.

  732. Are grapes gathered

  733. from thorn bushes

  734. or figs from thistles?

  735. So Jesus

  736. is essentially asking

  737. the same questions

  738. that James has asked.

  739. He's making the same

  740. kind of argument

  741. for the same

  742. kind of purpose.

  743. And he continues,

  744. so every healthy tree

  745. bears good fruit

  746. but the diseased tree

  747. bears bad fruit.

  748. A healthy tree

  749. cannot bear bad fruit

  750. nor can a diseased tree

  751. bear good fruit.

  752. Every tree

  753. that does not

  754. bear good fruit

  755. is cut down

  756. and thrown

  757. into the fire.

  758. Thus you will

  759. recognize them

  760. by their fruits.

  761. So James'

  762. allusion to

  763. Jesus' teaching

  764. in the Sermon on the Mount

  765. is to reinforce

  766. the point

  767. that these are

  768. false believers

  769. who have a much

  770. bigger problem

  771. than merely

  772. their tongue.

  773. The issue

  774. for them,

  775. for all of us

  776. apart from Christ,

  777. the issue

  778. is their heart.

  779. Later on

  780. in Matthew's Gospel

  781. Jesus picks up

  782. this topic again

  783. and says to false

  784. teachers in Matthew

    Matthew 12:33–34

  785. 12 verse 33

  786. to 34

  787. he says

  788. either make

  789. the tree

  790. good

  791. and its fruit

  792. good

  793. or make

  794. the tree

  795. bad

  796. and its fruit

  797. bad

  798. for the tree

  799. is known

  800. by its fruit.

  801. You brood of vipers

  802. how can you speak

  803. good

  804. when you are evil?

  805. And here it is

  806. for out of the

  807. abundance

  808. of the heart

  809. the mouth

  810. speaks.

  811. So the mouth

  812. the tongue

  813. as uncontrolled

  814. as it is

  815. as great of a fire

  816. as it is

  817. as consuming

  818. as it is

  819. it's really

  820. just revealing

  821. our hearts.

  822. This is what

  823. James is getting

  824. at with his

  825. rhetorical questions

  826. he is saying

  827. these double-minded

  828. men

  829. are salt ponds

  830. and that is

  831. why their water

  832. is not good

  833. for drinking

  834. it is why

  835. their words

  836. are full

  837. of poison

  838. he is saying

  839. they lack

  840. faith

  841. which means

  842. their heart

  843. is unaffected

  844. had they

  845. true faith

  846. saving

  847. faith

  848. it would show

  849. in their works

  850. according to

  851. James

  852. in chapter 2

  853. verse 18

  854. had they

  855. true saving

  856. faith

  857. we know

  858. from James 1

  859. 5 through 8

  860. that they would

  861. ask God

  862. for wisdom

  863. and for restraint

  864. in controlling

  865. their tongues

  866. but they don't

  867. because he addressed

  868. this

  869. the double-minded

  870. man doesn't

  871. ask

  872. by faith

  873. now perhaps

  874. you're beginning

  875. to see

  876. that James

  877. is addressing

  878. unbelievers

  879. and their

  880. double life

  881. but you're probably

  882. really wondering

  883. what does this

  884. have to do

  885. with me

  886. what is this

  887. text

  888. how is this

  889. profitable

  890. for the church

  891. today

  892. well at the very

  893. least we can say

  894. that this serves

  895. as a good warning

  896. of how to discern

  897. true believers

  898. from false believers

  899. as well as

  900. false teachers

  901. from true teachers

  902. bringing us back

  903. to verse 1

  904. right

  905. not many of you

  906. should become

  907. teachers my brothers

  908. so this text

  909. should always serve

  910. as a discerning

  911. guide

  912. in these matters

  913. but also

  914. the serious

  915. righteousness

  916. and weight

  917. with which

  918. James speaks

  919. to controlling

  920. our tongues

  921. ought to grab

  922. our attention

  923. we are reminded

  924. that apart from

  925. Christ we can

  926. do nothing

  927. good

  928. apart from

  929. Christ

  930. we cannot

  931. control

  932. or even

  933. restrain

  934. our lips

  935. in the slightest

  936. and so it

  937. becomes

  938. all the more

  939. imperative

  940. that we have

  941. a healthy

  942. habitual

  943. and regular

  944. prayer life

  945. in which we

  946. confess

  947. our sins

  948. to God

  949. and ask

  950. for help

  951. and wisdom

  952. there will be

  953. more on the

  954. wisdom piece

  955. next week

  956. hint and

  957. sack

  958. I think

  959. yeah

  960. we need to

  961. put aside

  962. all double

  963. talk

  964. and double

  965. living

  966. again our

  967. lives are

  968. meant to

  969. be given

  970. wholly

  971. and completely

  972. to God

  973. right

  974. don't curse

  975. God's image

  976. bearers

  977. while professing

  978. love for

  979. Christ

  980. it's an

  981. oxymoron

  982. right

  983. we need

  984. to put

  985. aside

  986. all

  987. double

  988. talk

  989. we are

  990. able

  991. to do

  992. this

  993. because

  994. Christ

  995. now

  996. lives

  997. in us

  998. who by

  999. grace

  1000. through faith

  1001. have

  1002. been

  1003. saved

  1004. we are

  1005. without

  1006. excuse

  1007. and we

  1008. have

  1009. every

  1010. possible

  1011. means

  1012. at our

  1013. disposal

  1014. to resist

  1015. sin

  1016. and

  1017. the

  1018. devil

  1019. yet

  1020. we will

  1021. inevitably

  1022. fail

  1023. at times

  1024. until

  1025. God's

  1026. sanctifying

  1027. work

  1028. is

  1029. finished

  1030. so there's

  1031. that

  1032. tension

  1033. right

  1034. we're

  1035. never

  1036. going to

  1037. fully

  1038. control

  1039. our

  1040. tongues

  1041. in this

  1042. life

  1043. we're

  1044. never

  1045. going to

  1046. fully

  1047. arrive

  1048. in this

  1049. life

  1050. but

  1051. a

  1052. general

  1053. pattern

  1054. as we've

  1055. been

  1056. talking

  1057. about

  1058. throughout

  1059. the book

  1060. of James

  1061. we're

  1062. going to

  1063. be

  1064. growing

  1065. more and

  1066. more

  1067. looking

  1068. like

  1069. Christ

  1070. representing

  1071. Christ

  1072. acting

  1073. like

  1074. Christ

  1075. though

  1076. failing

  1077. and for

  1078. our

  1079. failures

  1080. of course

  1081. we are

  1082. atoned

  1083. for

  1084. and

  1085. covered

  1086. by

  1087. Christ

  1088. so that

  1089. tension

  1090. is resolved

  1091. it's

  1092. it's

  1093. it finds

  1094. its

  1095. relief

  1096. in

  1097. Christ

  1098. and

  1099. Christ

  1100. alone

  1101. yes

  1102. we'll

  1103. still

  1104. say

  1105. stupid

  1106. things

  1107. intentionally

  1108. and

  1109. unintentionally

  1110. but

  1111. by

  1112. grace

  1113. we

  1114. will

  1115. learn

  1116. to

  1117. restrain

  1118. our

  1119. lips

  1120. more

  1121. and

  1122. more

  1123. to

  1124. speak

  1125. holy

  1126. words

  1127. for

  1128. a

  1129. holy

  1130. God

  1131. now

  1132. before

  1133. we get

  1134. to our

  1135. closing

  1136. applications

  1137. I want

  1138. to read

  1139. this

  1140. passage

  1141. from

  1142. 7

  1143. verses

  1144. 4

  1145. through

  1146. 6

  1147. you can

  1148. turn

  1149. there

  1150. if

  1151. you

  1152. want

  1153. it'll

  1154. be

  1155. quick

  1156. but

  1157. in

  1158. this

  1159. text

  1160. Paul

  1161. is

  1162. addressing

  1163. us

  1164. as

  1165. believers

  1166. post

  1167. salvation

  1168. right

  1169. this text

  1170. speaks

  1171. to our

  1172. present

  1173. reality

  1174. with our

  1175. sinful

  1176. nature

  1177. and with

  1178. the

  1179. holy

  1180. spirit

  1181. at work

  1182. in us

  1183. and

  1184. again

  1185. when you

  1186. read this

  1187. at first

  1188. you might

  1189. be tempted

  1190. to see

  1191. that same

  1192. tension

  1193. that we've

  1194. felt

  1195. in our

  1196. text

  1197. for today

  1198. but

  1199. Paul

  1200. seems to

  1201. think

  1202. of this

  1203. as

  1204. freedom

  1205. and I

  1206. think

  1207. if you

  1208. really

  1209. look closely

  1210. at what

  1211. he's

  1212. saying

  1213. you'll

  1214. see

  1215. that

  1216. and

  1217. you'll

  1218. feel

  1219. that

  1220. so

  1221. Paul

  1222. writes

  1223. in

  1224. 7

  1225. verses

  1226. 4

  1227. through

  1228. 6

  1229. he

  1230. says

  1231. likewise

  1232. my

  1233. brothers

  1234. you

  1235. also

  1236. have

  1237. died

  1238. to the

  1239. law

  1240. through

  1241. the

  1242. body

  1243. of

  1244. Christ

  1245. so

  1246. that

  1247. you

  1248. may

  1249. belong

  1250. to

  1251. one

  1252. another

  1253. to

  1254. him

  1255. who

  1256. has

  1257. been

  1258. raised

  1259. from

  1260. the

  1261. dead

  1262. in

  1263. order

  1264. that

  1265. we

  1266. may

  1267. bear

  1268. fruit

  1269. for

  1270. God

  1271. for

  1272. while

  1273. we

  1274. were

  1275. living

  1276. in

  1277. the

  1278. flesh

  1279. that's

  1280. a lot

  1281. of

  1282. W's

  1283. for

  1284. while

  1285. we

  1286. were

  1287. living

  1288. in

  1289. the

  1290. flesh

  1291. our

  1292. sinful

  1293. passions

  1294. aroused

  1295. by

  1296. the

  1297. law

  1298. were

  1299. at

  1300. work

  1301. in

  1302. our

  1303. members

  1304. to

  1305. bear

  1306. fruit

  1307. for

  1308. death

  1309. but

  1310. now

  1311. we

  1312. are

  1313. released

  1314. from

  1315. the

  1316. law

  1317. having

  1318. died

  1319. to

  1320. that

  1321. which

  1322. held

  1323. us

  1324. captive

  1325. so

  1326. that

  1327. we

  1328. serve

  1329. in

  1330. the

  1331. new

  1332. way

  1333. of

  1334. the

  1335. spirit

  1336. and

  1337. not

  1338. in

  1339. the

  1340. old

  1341. way

  1342. of

  1343. the

  1344. written

  1345. code

  1346. we

  1347. are

  1348. free

  1349. indeed

  1350. to

  1351. serve

  1352. in

  1353. the

  1354. new

  1355. way

  1356. of

  1357. the

  1358. !

  1359. by

  1360. restraining

  1361. !

  1362. our lips

  1363. application

  1364. number

  1365. one

  1366. speak

  1367. sparingly

  1368. which is

  1369. a nice

  1370. way of

  1371. saying

  1372. as I

  1373. would

  1374. hear

  1375. in my

  1376. house

  1377. often

  1378. shut

  1379. up

  1380. in

  1381. love

  1382. but

  1383. I'd

  1384. hear

  1385. it

  1386. so

  1387. this

  1388. is

  1389. a

  1390. general

  1391. rule

  1392. of

  1393. thumb

  1394. right

  1395. obviously

  1396. there

  1397. will

  1398. be

  1399. times

  1400. when

  1401. you

  1402. speak

  1403. more

  1404. but

  1405. generally

  1406. it's

  1407. better

  1408. to

  1409. just

  1410. not

  1411. speak

  1412. if

  1413. you

  1414. don't

  1415. have

  1416. to

  1417. to

  1418. restrain

  1419. your

  1420. lips

  1421. which

  1422. is

  1423. them

  1424. from

  1425. our

  1426. text

  1427. today

  1428. you're

  1429. playing

  1430. with

  1431. fire

  1432. every

  1433. time

  1434. you

  1435. talk

  1436. right

  1437. so

  1438. you

  1439. want

  1440. to

  1441. be

  1442. careful

  1443. to

  1444. speak

  1445. sparingly

  1446. in

  1447. fact

  1448. Proverbs

  1449. 10

  1450. 19

  1451. says

  1452. as

  1453. much

  1454. Solomon

  1455. wrote

  1456. when

  1457. words

  1458. are

  1459. many

  1460. so

  1461. when

  1462. you

  1463. speak

  1464. a

  1465. lot

  1466. when

  1467. words

  1468. are

  1469. many

  1470. transgression

  1471. or

  1472. sin

  1473. is

  1474. not

  1475. lacking

  1476. but

  1477. whoever

  1478. restrains

  1479. his

  1480. lips

  1481. is

  1482. prudent

  1483. or

  1484. wise

  1485. so

  1486. I

  1487. found

  1488. that

  1489. this

  1490. is

  1491. especially

  1492. true

  1493. when

  1494. I

  1495. am

  1496. surrounded

  1497. by

  1498. strangers

  1499. or

  1500. people

  1501. who

  1502. do

  1503. not

  1504. know

  1505. me

  1506. as

  1507. well

  1508. you

  1509. can

  1510. say

  1511. things

  1512. around

  1513. your

  1514. friends

  1515. and

  1516. family

  1517. where

  1518. they

  1519. know

  1520. what

  1521. you

  1522. are

  1523. and

  1524. what

  1525. you

  1526. are

  1527. not

  1528. saying

  1529. oh my

  1530. gosh

  1531. I

  1532. revealing

  1533. a

  1534. heart

  1535. that

  1536. is

  1537. in

  1538. submission

  1539. to

  1540. God

  1541. or

  1542. am

  1543. I

  1544. revealing

  1545. things

  1546. that

  1547. aren't

  1548. in

  1549. submission

  1550. and

  1551. how

  1552. can

  1553. I

  1554. correct

  1555. those

  1556. things

  1557. right

  1558. by

  1559. repentance

  1560. and

  1561. faith

  1562. so

  1563. again

  1564. restrain

  1565. your

  1566. lips

  1567. speak

  1568. sparingly

  1569. application

  1570. number

  1571. two

  1572. assume

  1573. the

  1574. best

  1575. in

  1576. one

  1577. another

  1578. so

  1579. two

  1580. reasons

  1581. to

  1582. assume

  1583. the

  1584. best

  1585. in

  1586. one

  1587. another

  1588. first

  1589. because

  1590. communication

  1591. is

  1592. tough

  1593. as

  1594. James

  1595. has

  1596. made

  1597. abundantly

  1598. clear

  1599. in our

  1600. text

  1601. today

  1602. so

  1603. even

  1604. though

  1605. it

  1606. was

  1607. unintentional

  1608. sometimes

  1609. something

  1610. is said

  1611. poorly

  1612. sometimes

  1613. something

  1614. is

  1615. heard

  1616. poorly

  1617. either

  1618. way

  1619. allow

  1620. time

  1621. and

  1622. space

  1623. for

  1624. someone

  1625. to

  1626. say

  1627. what

  1628. they

  1629. need

  1630. to

  1631. say

  1632. and

  1633. think

  1634. carefully

  1635. over

  1636. what

  1637. they

  1638. mean

  1639. and

  1640. don't

  1641. mean

  1642. and

  1643. I'll

  1644. throw

  1645. some

  1646. advice

  1647. in

  1648. from

  1649. James

  1650. as a

  1651. bonus

  1652. he says

  1653. in

  1654. James

  1655. 119

  1656. be

  1657. quick

  1658. to

  1659. hear

  1660. slow

  1661. to

  1662. speak

  1663. slow

  1664. to

  1665. anger

  1666. for

  1667. the

  1668. anger

  1669. of man

  1670. does

  1671. not

  1672. produce

  1673. the

  1674. righteousness

  1675. of

  1676. God

  1677. the

  1678. other

  1679. reason

  1680. we

  1681. are

  1682. to

  1683. assume

  1684. the

  1685. best

  1686. in

  1687. one

  1688. another

  1689. because

  1690. we

  1691. are

  1692. commanded

  1693. to

  1694. Paul

  1695. says

  1696. in

  1697. 1st

  1698. Corinthians

  1699. 13

  1700. 7

  1701. love

  1702. bears

  1703. all

  1704. things

  1705. believes

  1706. all

  1707. things

  1708. hopes

  1709. all

  1710. things

  1711. endures

  1712. all

  1713. things

  1714. he's

  1715. writing

  1716. to a

  1717. church

  1718. that

  1719. has

  1720. an

  1721. issue

  1722. with

  1723. unity

  1724. so

  1725. in

  1726. context

  1727. he's

  1728. saying

  1729. here

  1730. that

  1731. we

  1732. should

  1733. hope

  1734. and

  1735. believe

  1736. in

  1737. the

  1738. best

  1739. of

  1740. those

  1741. whom

  1742. we

  1743. love

  1744. who are

  1745. we

  1746. are

  1747. called

  1748. to

  1749. love

  1750. everybody

  1751. but

  1752. especially

  1753. our

  1754. fellow

  1755. believers

  1756. so

  1757. if

  1758. somebody

  1759. ever

  1760. says

  1761. something

  1762. that

  1763. hits

  1764. you

  1765. the

  1766. wrong

  1767. way

  1768. or

  1769. maybe

  1770. you

  1771. misheard

  1772. or

  1773. maybe

  1774. it

  1775. could

  1776. be

  1777. read

  1778. a

  1779. certain

  1780. way

  1781. that's

  1782. not

  1783. so

  1784. loving

  1785. or

  1786. positive

  1787. rather

  1788. than

  1789. jumping

  1790. to

  1791. anger

  1792. and

  1793. assumption

  1794. assume

  1795. the

  1796. best

  1797. about

  1798. that

  1799. brother

  1800. and

  1801. address

  1802. them

  1803. over

  1804. it

  1805. seek

  1806. clarification

  1807. or

  1808. even

  1809. better

  1810. just

  1811. let

  1812. it

  1813. go

  1814. right

  1815. don't

  1816. worry

  1817. about

  1818. what

  1819. James

  1820. is

  1821. saying

  1822. is

  1823. true

  1824. that

  1825. means

  1826. when

  1827. we're

  1828. out

  1829. in

  1830. the

  1831. hallway

  1832. talking

  1833. with

  1834. each

  1835. other

  1836. there's

  1837. fire

  1838. all

  1839. over

  1840. the

  1841. place

  1842. intentional

  1843. unintentional

  1844. we need

  1845. to be

  1846. careful

  1847. there's

  1848. going to

  1849. be

  1850. things

  1851. you hear

  1852. that

  1853. offend

  1854. you

  1855. that

  1856. weren't

  1857. meant

  1858. to

  1859. offend

  1860. you

  1861. you

  1862. will

  1863. be

  1864. miserable

  1865. your

  1866. whole

  1867. life

  1868. if

  1869. you

  1870. let

  1871. everything

  1872. said

  1873. and

  1874. done

  1875. that

  1876. offends

  1877. you

  1878. occupy

  1879. your

  1880. thoughts

  1881. your

  1882. energy

  1883. and

  1884. your

  1885. time

  1886. in

  1887. fact

  1888. let

  1889. me

  1890. make

  1891. this

  1892. simple

  1893. for

  1894. everyone

  1895. the

  1896. world

  1897. already

  1898. hates

  1899. you

  1900. because

  1901. you're

  1902. a

  1903. Christ

  1904. follower

  1905. so

  1906. you

  1907. don't

  1908. have

  1909. to

  1910. worry

  1911. about

  1912. whether

  1913. or not

  1914. they

  1915. want

  1916. to

  1917. offend

  1918. you

  1919. they'll

  1920. do

  1921. it

  1922. you

  1923. don't

  1924. have

  1925. to

  1926. question

  1927. it

  1928. so

  1929. you

  1930. can

  1931. just

  1932. well

  1933. you know

  1934. as the old saying

  1935. goes

  1936. get over it

  1937. but

  1938. you know

  1939. but you

  1940. can get

  1941. past it

  1942. you don't

  1943. have to

  1944. let

  1945. these

  1946. things

  1947. define

  1948. you

  1949. occupy

  1950. your

  1951. space

  1952. you don't

  2120. doesn't

  2121. lead

  2122. you

  2123. to

  2124. be

  2125. angry

  2126. and

  2127. curse

  2128. them

  2129. that

  2130. leads

  2131. you

  2132. to

  2133. pray

  2134. for

  2135. them

  2136. and

  2137. again

  2138. that

  2139. leads

  2140. us

  2141. to

  2142. our

  2143. fourth

  2144. and

  2145. final

  2146. application

  2147. pray

  2148. that

  2149. God

  2150. would

  2151. guard

  2152. your

  2153. mouth

  2154. David

  2155. prayed

  2156. this

  2157. because

  2158. he

  2159. understood

  2160. just

  2161. as

  2162. our

  2163. text

  2164. has

  2165. taught

  2166. us

  2167. that

  2168. there

  2169. is

  2170. nothing

  2171. in

  2172. him

  2173. that

  2174. can

  2175. teach

  2176. him

  2177. or

  2178. enable

  2179. him

  2180. to

  2181. restrain

  2182. his

  2183. tongue

  2184. God

  2185. alone

  2186. can

  2187. sanctify

  2188. us

  2189. in

  2190. that

  2191. way

  2192. he

  2193. prays

  2194. in

  2195. Psalm

    Psalms 141:3

  2196. 141

  2197. verse

  2198. 3

  2199. David

  2200. cries

  2201. out

  2202. to

  2203. God

  2204. set

  2205. a

  2206. guard

  2207. oh

  2208. Lord

  2209. over

  2210. my

  2211. mouth

  2212. keep

  2213. watch

  2214. over

  2215. the

  2216. door

  2217. of

  2218. my

  2219. lips

  2220. which

  2221. is

  2222. a

  2223. way

  2224. of

  2225. saying

  2226. keep

  2227. it

  2228. shut

  2229. we

  2230. are

  2231. entirely

  2232. at

  2233. the

  2234. mercy

  2235. of

  2236. God

  2237. for

  2238. his

  2239. work

  2240. in

  2241. our

  2242. life

  2243. that

  2244. our

  2245. lips

  2246. would

  2247. be

  2248. restrained

  2249. it's

  2250. impossible

  2251. for

  2252. us

  2253. to

  2254. restrain

  2255. them

  2256. in

  2257. and

  2258. of

  2259. ourselves

  2260. unless

  2261. evil

  2262. speech

  2263. and

  2264. thoughtless

  2265. speech

  2266. should

  2267. not

  2268. be

  2269. named

  2270. among

  2271. us

  2272. it

  2273. ought

  2274. not

  2275. be

  2276. so

  2277. but

  2278. we

  2279. can

  2280. pray

  2281. to

  2282. a

  2283. loving

  2284. merciful

  2285. and

  2286. sanctifying

  2287. God

  2288. whose

  2289. will

  2290. is

  2291. for

  2292. us

  2293. to

  2294. restrain

  2295. our

  2296. lips

  2297. so

  2298. therefore

  2299. we

  2300. can

  2301. go

  2302. with

  2303. confidence

  2304. to

  2305. him

  2306. knowing

  2307. that

  2308. he

  2309. will

  2310. answer

  2311. this

  2312. prayer

  2313. because

  2314. it

  2315. is

  2316. his

  2317. will

  2318. so

  2319. let's

  2320. let's

  2321. go to

  2322. him

  2323. now

  2324. closing

  2325. in

  2326. prayer
