  1. This is a continuation of our exposition of the book of James, and today's text is James chapter 4 verses 7 through 10.

    James 4:7–10

  2. I'll begin by reading it, but before I do, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  3. It was written for his glory and our good.

  4. So we would all do well to listen to it, to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  5. James 4 beginning in verse 7.

  6. James' original audience for this letter were Jews who had been dispersed throughout the Roman world,

  7. who were professing followers of his half-brother, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  8. His concern is that they understand that a saving faith in Jesus, while not earned by works, will be accompanied by works.

  9. We have a faith that works.

  10. He says in James chapter 2 verse 17 and 18,

    James 2:17

  11. Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

  12. But someone will say, you have faith and I have works.

  13. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

  14. So it is the faith that saves us, but it is the works of faith that evidence that salvation.

  15. And it is in this context that we need to understand today's text.

  16. James wants to be sure that his hearers understand what must be done to be restored to God.

  17. He is pastorally concerned for anyone who might claim the name of Christ and not actually be saved.

  18. This is a great problem of our day.

  19. Just about anybody you'd speak to would say they're a Christian.

  20. Living in the southeast, the trouble of ministry often is that you have to convince people that they're not in Christ

  21. so that they can place their faith in Christ.

  22. James here is seeking our highest good, and he does so in some really striking ways.

  23. He says some things that just make you go, whoa.

  24. His original audience must have known how much he loved them to receive these kinds of words.

  25. Just previously in chapter 4, he said, you adulterous people.

  26. He's drawing their minds back to all of the unfaithfulness of the Jewish people throughout the Old Testament.

  27. He goes on in verse 4, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

  28. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  29. It's a very dichotomous thing that he sets up here.

  30. I just would ask you, would you avail yourself of such strong language this morning?

  31. Charles Spurgeon delivered a sermon on April 7, 1878, entitled,

  32. The Reason Why Many Cannot Find Peace.

  33. It was on this text, in which he said, he's talking about people who can't find peace.

  34. He said, now I fear that comfort is misplaced in these cases.

  35. When we have endeavored to cheer such people,

  36. I fear we may have been filming over a wound which needs a sharp knife rather than a soft bandage,

  37. a keen lancet rather than a healing liniment.

  38. We shall try at this time to show certain uneasy souls why they do not obtain peace

  39. and what they must be brought to by the Holy Spirit before they can rightly claim that they are saved.

  40. Though our words may be somewhat caustic, they will be uttered in loving faithfulness.

  41. And may the Lord our God make them effectual to the ending of the inner strife

  42. and the establishment of settled peace."

  43. Now that is the great labor of the preacher,

  44. to open up God's word to people

  45. and to grab a hold of this ancient text,

  46. all of its cultural complication and language challenges,

  47. with one hand,

  48. and to grab a hold of a people with the other

  49. and pull them together.

  50. How does this mean something for us today

  51. and on into this next week

  52. and on for forever?

  53. But we don't all come to our gatherings in the same state of soul.

  54. This is broad discipling that's happening right now.

  55. Where exactly each and every person is in this room

  56. or across the hall or perhaps listening to the recording of this sometime later,

  57. it's very difficult to know.

  58. I'm a fan of smaller congregations and meeting in person

  59. because there's a greater likelihood that I might know, right?

  60. As I pray for our members and think about you,

  61. I may have some sense of the state of your soul,

  62. but I'm not God.

  63. It's hard to really know what's going on.

  64. There are guests here.

  65. I'm looking at faces I've never seen before.

  66. So it's a challenge.

  67. It's a labor of a preacher to try to do this.

  68. So the preacher must have many kinds of people in mind

  69. when he prepares to preach

  70. and while he's preaching.

  71. And so to do this,

  72. I try to think with varied success.

  73. I don't know that I do this very well,

  74. but I try to think in five different categories.

  75. Try to think of categories of people

  76. who may come and hear God's word opened.

  77. Number one, the weary.

  78. Those who have suffered much this past week

  79. or have attempted to work to earn God's favor

  80. and are just tired.

  81. Just come here feeling beat down,

  82. feeling their failure,

  83. and need to be reminded of the gospel.

  84. You need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  85. Jesus' finished work,

  86. made real for you.

  87. I also try to have in mind the wayward.

  88. Those who have imperceptibly drifted

  89. from their first love

  90. and the holiness that accompanies a pursuit of him.

  91. They've just forgotten,

  92. just grown a bit cold.

  93. The anchor was taken up

  94. and they're getting drawn out to sea.

  95. And they need to be reminded of the gospel.

  96. I try to have in mind the proud.

  97. Those who believe that they have done enough

  98. this past week.

  99. Who come and say,

  100. I'm alright.

  101. I pulled it off this past week.

  102. Enough to earn his favor,

  103. thinking they're better than others.

  104. And they need to be reminded

  105. of the gospel.

  106. They need to be reminded

  107. there's nothing we could do.

  108. We were utterly wretched

  109. apart from Christ.

  110. I try to keep in mind

  111. the lazy.

  112. Those who have grown apathetic

  113. in their zeal for the Lord

  114. and his ways.

  115. Who just have stopped really caring

  116. about living for the life to come.

  117. Are consumed with the life that is now.

  118. And they need to be reminded

  119. of the gospel.

  120. And finally,

  121. try to have in mind

  122. the lost.

  123. Those who have never heard the gospel

  124. or have heard the gospel

  125. and have never placed saving faith

  126. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  127. for the salvation

  128. of their souls.

  129. And I think there's application

  130. for all of these categories

  131. today.

  132. But maybe most particularly

  133. for the last.

  134. You came to church this morning

  135. not just interested

  136. but thinking that you're in Christ.

  137. Actually thinking,

  138. I am a Christian.

  139. And I would just like for you to perhaps,

  140. not that I want to cast doubt

  141. into your souls,

  142. but maybe just get you to stop

  143. and think,

  144. but what if

  145. I'm not?

  146. So there may be more categories.

  147. But generally,

  148. I think this framework

  149. serves a congregation well.

  150. However,

  151. it would take too much time

  152. and it's not ever my attempt

  153. to sort and label you

  154. into these categories

  155. so neatly.

  156. Because I don't have the power

  157. to view and assess

  158. your souls.

  159. I'm encouraged that James

  160. also doesn't seem

  161. to try to do so.

  162. He is concerned

  163. for the state

  164. of his original audience's

  165. souls, right?

  166. He's hearing about things

  167. that are happening

  168. in these churches.

  169. He's hearing about

  170. unacceptable things

  171. that are happening.

  172. The way they speak,

  173. the way they're showing

  174. preferential treatment

  175. to one another,

  176. the way they're

  177. friends with the world.

  178. Perhaps,

  179. we just see in the beginning

  180. of chapter 4,

  181. perhaps,

  182. somebody professing to know Christ

  183. killed somebody.

  184. It's quite possible.

  185. You do not have

  186. and so you murder.

  187. But in James 1.16,

  188. he simply states,

  189. do not be deceived,

  190. my beloved brothers.

  191. And in James 3.10,

  192. he says,

  193. my brothers,

  194. these things

  195. ought not be so.

  196. He assumes

  197. their professions

  198. are genuine,

  199. but he is careful

  200. to instruct them

  201. to test

  202. the genuineness

  203. of said

  204. professions.

  205. So that's the context.

  206. That's where our text lies.

  207. It's in the midst

  208. of that.

  209. This is his mind.

  210. It's his concern

  211. and it's my concern

  212. for us

  213. this morning.

  214. So with that context

  215. in mind,

  216. I want to read the text

  217. one more time.

  218. Right?

  219. Maybe some of it

  220. will begin to already

  221. kind of be enlightened

  222. for you as you go,

  223. oh,

  224. I see what James

  225. is doing here

  226. with them

  227. and with us.

  228. He says,

  229. submit yourselves,

  230. therefore,

  231. to God.

  232. Resist the devil

  233. and he will flee from you.

  234. Draw near to God

  235. and he will draw near

  236. to you.

  237. Cleanse your hands,

  238. you sinners,

  239. and purify your hearts,

  240. you double-minded.

  241. Be wretched

  242. and mourn

  243. and weep.

  244. Let your laughter

  245. be turned to mourning

  246. and your joy

  247. to gloom.

  248. Humble yourselves

  249. before the Lord

  250. and he will exalt you.

  251. We see in this passage,

  252. number one,

  253. a comprehensive

  254. command,

  255. an all-inclusive,

  256. a wide,

  257. overarching command,

  258. the first part

  259. of verse seven,

  260. submit yourselves,

  261. therefore,

  262. to God.

  263. And at the end

  264. of the passage,

  265. we see a summary

  266. command,

  267. which is that

  268. accompanied by

  269. wonderful promise.

  270. Humble yourselves

  271. before the Lord

  272. and he will exalt you.

  273. And then I would

  274. submit to you

  275. that in between

  276. those two,

  277. a comprehensive command,

  278. this is our two-point

  279. summary today,

  280. a comprehensive command

  281. and a summary command,

  282. there are five

  283. explanatory commands.

  284. Last half of verse seven

  285. and through verse nine.

  286. So if we're being

  287. comprehensively commanded

  288. to submit ourselves

  289. to God,

  290. how,

  291. what must we do

  292. to be in submission

  293. to our God?

  294. And I think those commands,

  295. those five,

  296. help us to understand

  297. what that looks like.

  298. So let's look first

  299. at a comprehensive command.

  300. Submit yourselves,

  301. therefore,

  302. to God.

  303. And he says,

  304. therefore,

  305. so we must back up

  306. a little bit

  307. and to chapter four

  308. and verse six,

  309. where James,

  310. right,

  311. but he gives more grace.

  312. Therefore,

  313. it says,

  314. and he's quoting

  315. Proverbs 3,

  316. 34,

  317. God opposes the proud,

  318. but gives grace

  319. to the humble.

  320. Those who are willing

  321. to recognize

  322. that they are created

  323. and then rightly

  324. submit themselves

  325. to their creator,

  326. right?

  327. And God gives grace

  328. to those who will

  329. submit themselves

  330. to God.

  331. And this is why he says,

  332. submit yourselves,

  333. therefore,

  334. to God.

  335. Submission is not a thing

  336. that the unregenerate person

  337. naturally gravitates toward.

  338. In fact,

  339. naturally,

  340. the unconverted person

  341. gravitates away

  342. from submission.

  343. Submitting is not a thing

  344. that a regenerate person does

  345. without an ongoing intervention

  346. of the Holy Spirit

  347. in our lives,

  348. right?

  349. Given to our flesh,

  350. we will tend to not want

  351. to submit to authority.

  352. We are very inclined

  353. to go our own way.

  354. We are very inclined

  355. to think that we know best

  356. and can govern our lives best,

  357. right?

  358. I am me,

  359. therefore,

  360. I know what I need

  361. better than anyone else.

  362. And this is just not true.

  363. Just think,

  364. our entire national identity

  365. is founded in the idea

  366. of casting off a despot

  367. that we might govern ourselves.

  368. But even our founders

  369. intended for our experiment

  370. in liberty

  371. to be one of ordered liberty.

  372. And they knew

  373. that our people

  374. would have to have

  375. an even higher authority

  376. for the experiment

  377. to find any success.

  378. It's unraveling in our day

  379. because so many of our nation

  380. do not have a higher authority

  381. that they submit to.

  382. We as a culture

  383. find ourselves

  384. applauding the trailblazer,

  385. the rule breaker,

  386. the rogue,

  387. right?

  388. We love this fierce,

  389. wild individualism,

  390. right?

  391. Cast off anything

  392. that might tell you

  393. you must look like this

  394. or do such and such.

  395. And I think that permeates

  396. our very nature

  397. and it extends

  398. to other things

  399. as well.

  400. People have a difficult time

  401. submitting themselves.

  402. themselves.

  403. But every created thing

  404. belongs to its creator.

  405. Nothing created

  406. has any right

  407. to declare

  408. what it wants to do.

  409. This cup,

  410. when I want to pick it up

  411. and drink water out of it,

  412. will be picked up

  413. and I will drink water out of it.

  414. And the cup cannot say no.

  415. And you might go,

  416. well, that seems very obvious.

  417. We are like the cup.

  418. We have a creator

  419. who has a right

  420. to demand

  421. how it is

  422. we're meant

  423. to act.

  424. Our creator

  425. has absolute

  426. authority.

  427. He created

  428. all things

  429. and he does not

  430. relinquish

  431. that authority.

  432. Charles Spurgeon,

  433. same sermon.

  434. I don't remember

  435. how many times

  436. I quote Spurgeon in this.

  437. If I do though,

  438. it's all from that same sermon.

  439. Spurgeon said,

  440. common sense

  441. teaches

  442. that rebellion

  443. against omnipotence,

  444. which is absolute power,

  445. rebellion against

  446. omnipotence

  447. is both

  448. insanity

  449. and blasphemy.

  450. The great trouble

  451. with mankind,

  452. the great trouble

  453. with us

  454. is that we have

  455. disregarded

  456. this

  457. common

  458. sense

  459. and it's not

  460. a new trouble.

  461. It was the trouble

  462. that caused

  463. all the trouble.

  464. in the garden,

  465. Adam and Eve

  466. disregarding the good

  467. commands of God

  468. and seeking to govern

  469. themselves.

  470. It was the trouble

  471. of Israel

  472. before and after

  473. the Exodus,

  474. setting aside

  475. the good commands

  476. of God

  477. for the idols

  478. of the nations

  479. and it remains

  480. and it remains

  481. our trouble.

  482. Submission to God,

  483. James tells us,

  484. is comprehensive.

  485. He says,

  486. submit

  487. yourselves.

  488. This is

  489. all-inclusive.

  490. James says,

  491. our very being

  492. must be placed

  493. under the rule

  494. of God.

  495. every bit

  496. of you,

  497. body and soul,

  498. your mind

  499. and your affections,

  500. your desires,

  501. your will,

  502. must be given

  503. to him

  504. in allegiance.

  505. Every day

  506. of your week,

  507. every ounce

  508. of you

  509. must be given

  510. to God.

  511. Now,

  512. at this point,

  513. if this feels

  514. burdensome

  515. to you,

  516. if this feels

  517. in any way

  518. oppressive

  519. to you,

  520. please hear me.

  521. Submission

  522. to God

  523. is not

  524. a displeasurable

  525. thing.

  526. God is the creator

  527. and God

  528. knows

  529. best.

  530. Those of you

  531. who know me

  532. know that I'm

  533. a fairly

  534. controlling person.

  535. I like things

  536. in my life

  537. to be just

  538. so-so.

  539. And a lot of you

  540. joke about

  541. some of those things

  542. that actually

  543. don't really matter

  544. to me that much.

  545. I straighten the chairs

  546. almost every Sunday.

  547. And when you all leave,

  548. I go,

  549. I can't believe

  550. how crooked

  551. these chairs are.

  552. I straighten them again.

  553. And it's fine.

  554. I'm at peace

  555. with that.

  556. It's okay.

  557. If I didn't know

  558. the creator,

  559. right,

  560. God Almighty,

  561. the one who is

  562. powerful to control

  563. all things

  564. and knows

  565. what's best,

  566. I would be a mess.

  567. I was sharing

  568. with a brother

  569. just this past week.

  570. I don't know

  571. that I would still

  572. be alive.

  573. I don't know

  574. that I could handle

  575. how much in my life

  576. is actually

  577. out of control.

  578. the older I get

  579. and the more

  580. I realize

  581. how little

  582. I can affect

  583. the things

  584. in my world

  585. if I didn't know

  586. the one who is

  587. in control.

  588. I control so little.

  589. And that's good

  590. when we realize

  591. how desperately

  592. we need

  593. a creator

  594. who is

  595. in control.

  596. It's not displeasurable

  597. to submit yourself

  598. to God.

  599. God is so full

  600. of goodness

  601. and loving kindness

  602. to those

  603. who will submit

  604. themselves to him

  605. that he will not

  606. command us

  607. to do anything

  608. harmful

  609. or forbid us

  610. to do anything

  611. beneficial

  612. and he gets

  613. to define

  614. those terms.

  615. What is good

  616. for us?

  617. Romans 8,

  618. 28,

  619. and 29.

  620. You know this,

  621. right?

  622. It's in the zeitgeist

  623. and we know

  624. that for those

  625. who love God

  626. all things work

  627. together for good

  628. for those

  629. who are called

  630. according

  631. to his purpose.

  632. Those who love God

  633. all things

  634. every circumstance

  635. whatever it is

  636. we're walking through

  637. they're for good.

  638. Right?

  639. And we don't have to

  640. wonder what is that good?

  641. What's the mystery?

  642. Someday maybe

  643. I'll know

  644. because verse 29 says

  645. for those

  646. whom he foreknew

  647. he also predestined

  648. to be conformed

  649. to the image

  650. of his son.

  651. This is the great good

  652. that God is working

  653. in all things

  654. our holiness.

  655. Right?

  656. That we might look

  657. more like Christ

  658. and gain

  659. more of Christ

  660. in our lives.

  661. It is a wonderful thing

  662. to submit yourself

  663. to God.

  664. It's a wonderful thing

  665. to give up control

  666. to get off the throne

  667. and let God reign

  668. in your life.

  669. And if God

  670. does not reign

  671. in your life

  672. in an ever-growing measure

  673. none of us

  674. or doing this

  675. with perfection

  676. then you may

  677. not be saved.

  678. It is possible

  679. that you've made

  680. some mental assent

  681. to the gospel

  682. of Jesus Christ

  683. but you still

  684. love your control.

  685. You still want

  686. to be a friend

  687. with the world

  688. and this

  689. is to be an enemy

  690. of God.

  691. So,

  692. what does it look like

  693. to submit

  694. ourselves to God?

  695. How might we

  696. submit ourselves

  697. to God?

  698. James gives us

  699. five explanatory

  700. commands.

  701. Number one,

  702. resist the devil.

  703. By which I believe

  704. that James

  705. means resist

  706. all

  707. sin.

  708. I think there's

  709. a spiritual battle

  710. reality to what

  711. he's saying here

  712. but I don't think

  713. he just means

  714. that.

  715. Again,

  716. contextually,

  717. I think he means

  718. resist

  719. all sin.

  720. Whatever its source

  721. might be,

  722. whether it's the

  723. temptation that the

  724. devil brings

  725. or our own

  726. flesh,

  727. we do battle

  728. in the spiritual

  729. realm and we

  730. must be awakened

  731. to this

  732. reality.

  733. If we are

  734. submitted to God,

  735. we must resist

  736. the ways

  737. of the devil.

  738. We cannot

  739. have two

  740. masters.

  741. We must

  742. resist.

  743. It takes

  744. work.

  745. And here

  746. we find

  747. a promise.

  748. This is a

  749. great promise.

  750. Resist

  751. the devil

  752. and he will

  753. flee from you.

  754. Beloved,

  755. sin has

  756. no power

  757. over you.

  758. If you are

  759. in Christ,

  760. you have been

  761. set free

  762. from sin.

  763. Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  764. chapter 6.

  765. It does not

  766. have power

  767. and you

  768. should stop

  769. living as if

  770. it does.

  771. Some of you

  772. are in Christ

  773. and you just

  774. grant power

  775. back to sin.

  776. It has no

  777. power over

  778. you.

  779. This will take

  780. activity on

  781. your part.

  782. You will have

  783. to hold

  784. on to Christ.

  785. You will have

  786. to love the

  787. ways of God

  788. to resist

  789. the devil.

  790. It takes

  791. activity,

  792. but it is

  793. accompanied

  794. by the grace

  795. of God.

  796. God will give

  797. you the power.

  798. If you're in

  799. Christ,

  800. God has

  801. given to

  802. you his

  803. spirit and

  804. he will

  805. give you

  806. the power

  807. to resist

  808. and have

  809. the devil

  810. flee from

  811. you.

  812. Think

  813. practically.

  814. Paul says

  815. well in

  816. 1 Corinthians

  817. 10,

  818. 13,

  819. no temptation

  820. has overtaken

  821. you that is

  822. not common

  823. to man.

  824. And I think

  825. what Paul

  826. means to be

  827. communicating

  828. there is

  829. don't think

  830. that there

  831. are some

  832. others,

  833. there are

  834. some new

  835. temptation

  836. that no

  837. one else

  838. has experienced

  839. in life

  840. and yet

  841. you have

  842. now experienced

  843. it and it

  844. is too

  845. powerful for

  846. you to

  847. resist.

  848. It's common.

  849. Same stuff.

  850. We're all

  851. dealing with

  852. the same

  853. temptation.

  854. No temptation

  855. has overtaken

  856. you that is

  857. not common

  858. to man.

  859. And I feel

  860. the Greek

  861. doesn't have

  862. it, but I

  863. almost feel

  864. like there

  865. should be

  866. a but in

  867. here.

  868. But God

  869. is faithful

  870. and he will

  871. not let you

  872. be tempted

  873. beyond your

  874. ability.

  875. But with the

  876. temptation,

  877. he will also

  878. provide the

  879. way of

  880. escape that

  881. you may

  882. be able

  883. to endure

  884. it, to

  885. resist the

  886. devil.

  887. So there

  888. should be

  889. in us that

  890. kind of

  891. compulsion, a

  892. hatred of

  893. sin.

  894. If you are

  895. in Christ,

  896. you will not

  897. love your

  898. sin.

  899. You will

  900. still sin.

  901. We are

  902. not yet

  903. entirely free

  904. from our

  905. flesh.

  906. You will

  907. still sin,

  908. but you've

  909. been set free

  910. from the

  911. power of it

  912. and you

  913. shouldn't

  914. enjoy it.

  915. When you

  916. sin, you

  917. should, here

  918. I go again.

  919. The same

  920. thing, Lord

  921. deliver me

  922. from this

  923. body of

  924. death.

  925. Second, we

  926. are to draw

  927. near to

  928. God.

  929. Another

  930. command with

  931. a wonderful

  932. promise, and

  933. this is a

  934. most excellent

  935. promise.

  936. Did you see

  937. that cup of

  938. bay?

  939. God's

  940. God's

  941. word.

  942. I think

  943. that James

  944. means for

  945. us to

  946. understand

  947. this

  948. drawing

  949. near in

  950. practical

  951. ways.

  952. I don't

  953. think this

  954. is meant

  955. to be

  956. super

  957. emotional.

  958. I just

  959. want to

  960. draw.

  961. We

  962. write a

  963. song about

  964. it that

  965. would sound

  966. like a

  967. love

  968. song.

  969. I think

  970. he means

  971. very

  972. practically

  973. study

  974. God's

  975. word

  976. and

  977. respond

  978. in

  979. prayer.

  980. I think

  981. this is

  982. what he

  983. means.

  984. God has

  985. written

  986. for us

  987. a book.

  988. God has

  989. condescended

  990. to become

  991. an author.

  992. God

  993. Almighty,

  994. creator of

  995. heaven and

  996. earth.

  997. We can't

  998. even kind

  999. of fathom

  1000. his

  1001. immensity,

  1002. his power.

  1003. We are

  1004. forever.

  1005. Get this,

  1006. if you're

  1007. in Christ,

  1008. you're going

  1009. to be with

  1010. God for

  1011. eternity

  1012. realizing

  1013. his

  1014. immensity

  1015. and his

  1016. power.

  1017. That's an

  1018. astounding

  1019. thing to

  1020. think about.

  1021. We are

  1022. going to

  1023. again and

  1024. again and

  1025. again and

  1026. again receive

  1027. new revelation

  1028. about the

  1029. greatness of

  1030. our God.

  1031. He wrote

  1032. a book

  1033. and we

  1034. neglect it.

  1035. It is a

  1036. precious book.

  1037. Every

  1038. single

  1039. word.

  1040. If you're

  1041. going to

  1042. resist,

  1043. if you're

  1044. going to

  1045. submit yourself

  1046. to God,

  1047. you're going

  1048. to do it

  1049. on his

  1050. terms.

  1051. Be careful

  1052. that you

  1053. don't have

  1054. a God

  1055. of your

  1056. own

  1057. making.

  1058. It is

  1059. incredible

  1060. to me

  1061. the number

  1062. of people

  1063. that profess

  1064. faith in

  1065. Jesus Christ

  1066. and then

  1067. in the

  1068. same breath

  1069. will say

  1070. something

  1071. about God

  1072. that is

  1073. flatly

  1074. untrue

  1075. and not

  1076. unclear

  1077. in the

  1078. Bible.

  1079. God has

  1080. spoken

  1081. to us.

  1082. We're

  1083. going to

  1084. draw near

  1085. to God

  1086. himself.

  1087. We're

  1088. going to

  1089. do it

  1090. in the

  1091. study of

  1092. his

  1093. word and

  1094. then in

  1095. response

  1096. to that

  1097. word.

  1098. Prayer does

  1099. not seek

  1100. to control

  1101. God,

  1102. but to

  1103. find us

  1104. in

  1105. submission

  1106. to him.

  1107. You ever

  1108. had a

  1109. conversation

  1110. with somebody

  1111. and you

  1112. can pretty

  1113. quickly get

  1114. that they

  1115. are not

  1116. listening

  1117. to you?

  1118. You do

  1119. not desire

  1120. to be in

  1121. any kind

  1122. of relationship

  1123. with you

  1124. at all.

  1125. An argument

  1126. especially where

  1127. they're just

  1128. not hearing

  1129. the clear

  1130. things that

  1131. you're saying

  1132. to them

  1133. and their

  1134. responses

  1135. make no

  1136. sense

  1137. whatsoever.

  1138. A lot of

  1139. us speak

  1140. to God

  1141. that way.

  1142. God's

  1143. like,

  1144. why would

  1145. you pray

  1146. that?

  1147. I've

  1148. already

  1149. told you.

  1150. I've

  1151. taught you

  1152. how to

  1153. pray.

  1154. You should

  1155. know the

  1156. things to

  1157. ask for.

  1158. You should

  1159. be directed

  1160. as you

  1161. come near

  1162. to me.

  1163. God speaks

  1164. to us by

  1165. his word

  1166. and we

  1167. respond

  1168. according

  1169. to his

  1170. word

  1171. in prayer.

  1172. Here

  1173. is another

  1174. one,

  1175. Spurgeon.

  1176. Prayer is

  1177. feeling that

  1178. God is

  1179. present and

  1180. the desire

  1181. of the

  1182. soul to

  1183. come near

  1184. to him

  1185. so as

  1186. to know

  1187. his influence,

  1188. to know

  1189. his love,

  1190. to feel

  1191. his power

  1192. and to be

  1193. conformed

  1194. to his

  1195. will.

  1196. If you

  1197. are in

  1198. Christ,

  1199. not with

  1200. perfection,

  1201. but you

  1202. should desire

  1203. to meet

  1204. with God

  1205. in his

  1206. word and

  1207. to respond

  1208. to him

  1209. in prayer.

  1210. And I

  1211. don't want

  1212. to pretend

  1213. for a

  1214. moment that

  1215. I don't

  1216. also struggle

  1217. with the

  1218. habits of

  1219. grace.

  1220. There are

  1221. days that

  1222. it's the

  1223. very thing

  1224. I ought

  1225. to do

  1226. and it's

  1227. the thing

  1228. that I

  1229. don't

  1230. do.

  1231. But in

  1232. ever-growing

  1233. ways,

  1234. I find

  1235. myself

  1236. loving

  1237. God's

  1238. word

  1239. more

  1240. and more

  1241. and more

  1242. as its

  1243. complexity

  1244. is open

  1245. to me,

  1246. as he

  1247. comes to

  1248. alive

  1249. to me

  1250. in the

  1251. text.

  1252. And more

  1253. and more

  1254. I recognize

  1255. that I

  1256. need to

  1257. submit

  1258. myself

  1259. to him

  1260. in prayer.

  1261. I need

  1262. him for

  1263. every

  1264. single

  1265. moment

  1266. of every

  1267. day.

  1268. It should

  1269. be a

  1270. growing

  1271. reality

  1272. in your

  1273. life

  1274. if you

  1275. are in

  1276. Christ.

  1277. We'll take

  1278. the next

  1279. two together

  1280. because they

  1281. really are

  1282. intricately

  1283. connected.

  1284. Number three,

  1285. cleanse your

  1286. hands.

  1287. And number

  1288. four,

  1289. purify your

  1290. hearts.

  1291. James tells

  1292. us that the

  1293. ones submitted

  1294. to God

  1295. will desire

  1296. to give

  1297. up sin.

  1298. Both sins

  1299. external,

  1300. cleanse your

  1301. hands,

  1302. and sins

  1303. internal

  1304. purify

  1305. your

  1306. hearts.

  1307. We should

  1308. want to

  1309. give up

  1310. sin.

  1311. A refusal

  1312. to do so

  1313. is inconsistent

  1314. with submission

  1315. to God.

  1316. You can't

  1317. be a

  1318. friend

  1319. of the

  1320. world

  1321. and a

  1322. friend of

  1323. God.

  1324. If you

  1325. are to

  1326. have God,

  1327. then you'll

  1328. have him

  1329. on his

  1330. terms.

  1331. James has

  1332. made this

  1333. point in

  1334. James chapter

  1335. four in

  1336. verse

  1337. four.

  1338. Here's a

  1339. people he's

  1340. writing to.

  1341. Perhaps this

  1342. morning,

  1343. somebody he's

  1344. writing to

  1345. were trying

  1346. to commit

  1347. themselves in

  1348. two places.

  1349. He says,

  1350. you adulterous

  1351. people.

  1352. My wife's

  1353. name is

  1354. Sam,

  1355. and I've

  1356. committed to

  1357. her as

  1358. my wife.

  1359. And I'm

  1360. not to be

  1361. committed to

  1362. any other

  1363. woman.

  1364. It's my

  1365. wife,

  1366. just Sam.

  1367. Otherwise,

  1368. I would be

  1369. an adulterer.

  1370. This is what

  1371. he's calling

  1372. a person

  1373. who tries

  1374. to live

  1375. in the

  1376. world,

  1377. have the

  1378. things of

  1379. the world,

  1380. and also

  1381. have God.

  1382. And here

  1383. James calls

  1384. this type

  1385. of behavior

  1386. double-minded.

  1387. Double-mindedness.

  1388. As if you

  1389. have two

  1390. brains in

  1391. your head,

  1392. which should

  1393. be an

  1394. impossibility.

  1395. It's not

  1396. the first

  1397. time he's

  1398. used this

  1399. phrase.

  1400. In chapter

  1401. one,

  1402. verse eight,

  1403. he says

  1404. that the

  1405. double-minded

  1406. person is

  1407. unstable in

  1408. all his

  1409. ways.

  1410. Your

  1411. devotion to

  1412. God and

  1413. his ways

  1414. should be

  1415. clear,

  1416. growing in

  1417. its

  1418. clarity.

  1419. And I

  1420. think here

  1421. that James

  1422. likely has

  1423. Psalm 119,

    Psalms 119:113

  1424. verse 113

  1425. in mind.

  1426. If you're

  1427. unfamiliar with

  1428. Psalm 119,

  1429. it is all

  1430. about the

  1431. beauty,

  1432. the worth,

  1433. the value

  1434. of God's

  1435. word.

  1436. And here

  1437. the psalmist

  1438. says,

  1439. I hate

  1440. the double-minded,

  1441. but I

  1442. love

  1443. your law.

  1444. He

  1445. juxtaposes

  1446. that, right?

  1447. He's saying,

  1448. I'm not

  1449. double-minded

  1450. because I

  1451. love your

  1452. law.

  1453. I want to

  1454. submit myself

  1455. to your

  1456. law.

  1457. So,

  1458. cleanse your

  1459. hands and

  1460. purify your

  1461. hearts.

  1462. Fifth,

  1463. mourn

  1464. your sin.

  1465. He said,

  1466. be wretched

  1467. and mourn

  1468. and weep.

  1469. Let your

  1470. laughter be

  1471. turned to

  1472. mourning and

  1473. your joy

  1474. to gloom.

  1475. James here

  1476. is not

  1477. contradicting

  1478. all of the

  1479. Bible's

  1480. teaching about

  1481. joy.

  1482. You've

  1483. got to

  1484. place it

  1485. in its

  1486. context.

  1487. Those in

  1488. Christ have

  1489. great reason

  1490. for great

  1491. joy,

  1492. abiding,

  1493. unalterable

  1494. joy.

  1495. James is

  1496. speaking to

  1497. those who

  1498. profess faith

  1499. in Jesus

  1500. Christ,

  1501. and then

  1502. they sin

  1503. with

  1504. frivolity.

  1505. They're

  1506. licentious

  1507. in their

  1508. sinning.

  1509. They treat

  1510. lightly the

  1511. sacrifice of

  1512. Jesus Christ.

  1513. Cheap

  1514. grace.

  1515. They just

  1516. think they

  1517. can go

  1518. off and

  1519. do whatever

  1520. they want

  1521. to do,

  1522. and they

  1523. have a

  1524. great time

  1525. doing it.

  1526. They're like

  1527. the Israelites

  1528. in the days

  1529. of the

  1530. prophet

  1531. Jeremiah.

  1532. This is

    Isaiah 6:13

  1533. chapter 6,

  1534. verse 13

  1535. and following.

  1536. For from

  1537. the least

  1538. to the

  1539. greatest

  1540. of them,

  1541. everyone

  1542. is greedy

  1543. for unjust

  1544. gain,

  1545. and from

  1546. prophet to

  1547. priest,

  1548. everyone

  1549. deals

  1550. falsely.

  1551. They have

  1552. healed the

  1553. wound of

  1554. my people

  1555. lightly,

  1556. saying,

  1557. peace,

  1558. peace,

  1559. when there

  1560. is no

  1561. peace.

  1562. Were they

  1563. ashamed when

  1564. they committed

  1565. abomination?

  1566. No,

  1567. they were not

  1568. at all ashamed.

  1569. They did not

  1570. know how to

  1571. blush.

  1572. Therefore,

  1573. they shall

  1574. fall among

  1575. those who

  1576. fall.

  1577. At the

  1578. time that

  1579. I punish

  1580. them,

  1581. they shall

  1582. be

  1583. overthrown,

  1584. says the

  1585. Lord.

  1586. We should

  1587. not sin

  1588. lightly.

  1589. All of

  1590. this effort

  1591. that James

  1592. is talking

  1593. about,

  1594. all of

  1595. these

  1596. submitting

  1597. explanatory

  1598. commands,

  1599. we will

  1600. not do

  1601. with

  1602. perfection,

  1603. but when

  1604. we fail

  1605. to do

  1606. them,

  1607. we should

  1608. mourn

  1609. our sin.

  1610. Jesus in

  1611. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1612. chapter 5,

  1613. the Sermon

  1614. on the

  1615. Mount,

  1616. called the

  1617. Beatitudes,

  1618. he says,

  1619. blessed,

  1620. you could

  1621. insert there,

  1622. happy or

  1623. joyful,

  1624. are those

  1625. who

  1626. mourn,

  1627. for they

  1628. shall be

  1629. comforted.

  1630. We're

  1631. mourning,

  1632. we're mourning

  1633. over our

  1634. fallen condition,

  1635. even though

  1636. we've been

  1637. redeemed in

  1638. Christ,

  1639. longing for

  1640. that day

  1641. when he

  1642. will make

  1643. all things

  1644. new.

  1645. We'll put

  1646. off these

  1647. bodies of

  1648. death,

  1649. we'll be

  1650. given

  1651. resurrection

  1652. bodies,

  1653. when we

  1654. can sin

  1655. no more,

  1656. that will

  1657. be our

  1658. glorified

  1659. state.

  1660. I think

  1661. that as we

  1662. await that,

  1663. the Christian

  1664. should be

  1665. all at

  1666. once the

  1667. most sad

  1668. and the

  1669. most happy

  1670. of people,

  1671. all at the

  1672. same time.

  1673. Sad because

  1674. we know the

  1675. weight of our

  1676. own sin and

  1677. that of the

  1678. world,

  1679. happy because

  1680. we've been

  1681. delivered from

  1682. it,

  1683. and know that

  1684. one day

  1685. it'll all be

  1686. fixed.

  1687. Thomas Adams,

  1688. this is the

  1689. quotation on

  1690. your bulletin,

  1691. said,

  1692. we spend our

  1693. years with

  1694. sighing,

  1695. it is a

  1696. valley of

  1697. tears,

  1698. but death

  1699. is the

  1700. funeral of

  1701. all our

  1702. sorrows.

  1703. So we have

  1704. this comprehensive

  1705. command,

  1706. submit yourselves

  1707. therefore to

  1708. God,

  1709. and the five

  1710. explanatory

  1711. commands that

  1712. accompany it.

  1713. Second point

  1714. is a summary

  1715. command accompanied

  1716. by a promise,

  1717. and this is

  1718. brief, I promise,

  1719. so here we go.

  1720. Humble yourselves

  1721. before the

  1722. Lord, and

  1723. he will exalt

  1724. you.

  1725. If we are

  1726. submitted to

  1727. God, then the

  1728. posture of our

  1729. hearts will be

  1730. humility.

  1731. The emotional

  1732. position of

  1733. submission,

  1734. right, is

  1735. humility,

  1736. recognizing that

  1737. we are not

  1738. God, and

  1739. that he is,

  1740. that we get

  1741. our very being

  1742. and we need

  1743. everything from

  1744. him.

  1745. If we have

  1746. not come to

  1747. the end of

  1748. ourselves,

  1749. recognize that

  1750. we are nothing,

  1751. we have nothing,

  1752. and we can do

  1753. nothing apart

  1754. from God,

  1755. then we do

  1756. not deserve

  1757. his mercy

  1758. and grace,

  1759. which he

  1760. freely grants

  1761. to the

  1762. humble in

  1763. the personal

  1764. work of

  1765. Jesus Christ.

  1766. Psalm 51,

    Psalms 51:17

  1767. verse 17,

  1768. the psalmist

  1769. write,

  1770. the sacrifices

  1771. of God

  1772. are a broken

  1773. spirit,

  1774. a broken

  1775. and contrite

  1776. heart,

  1777. O God,

  1778. you will

  1779. not despise.

  1780. and the

  1781. humble heart

  1782. is given

  1783. this glorious

  1784. promise,

  1785. and he

  1786. will

  1787. exalt you.

  1788. So in

  1789. closing,

  1790. you can

  1791. leave James,

  1792. turn with

  1793. me to

  1794. Matthew

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  1795. chapter 20,

  1796. as I

  1797. command this

  1798. cup to

  1799. wet my

  1800. whistle.

  1801. I think

  1802. this little

  1803. picture in

  1804. the life of

  1805. Jesus and

  1806. the disciples

  1807. is very

  1808. helpful and

  1809. instructive as

  1810. Jesus teaches

  1811. as well in

  1812. it.

  1813. Humble

  1814. yourselves

  1815. before the

  1816. Lord and

  1817. he will

  1818. exalt you.

  1819. I'll begin

  1820. reading in

  1821. verse 17.

  1822. And as

  1823. Jesus was

  1824. going up to

  1825. Jerusalem,

  1826. he took

  1827. the twelve

  1828. disciples aside

  1829. and on the

  1830. way he

  1831. said to

  1832. them,

  1833. see,

  1834. we are

  1835. going up

  1836. to Jerusalem

  1837. and the

  1838. Son of

  1839. Man will

  1840. be delivered

  1841. over to

  1842. the chief

  1843. priests

  1844. and scribes

  1845. and they

  1846. will condemn

  1847. him to

  1848. death and

  1849. deliver him

  1850. over to

  1851. the Gentiles

  1852. to be mocked

  1853. and flogged

  1854. and crucified

  1855. and he

  1856. will be

  1857. raised on

  1858. the third

  1859. day.

  1860. Now,

  1861. they,

  1862. as they

  1863. hear this,

  1864. they're hearing

  1865. Son of Man

  1866. from the

  1867. book of

  1868. Daniel,

  1869. a forever

  1870. king,

  1871. a reigning

  1872. forever

  1873. king.

  1874. And they

  1875. had recognized

  1876. this is who

  1877. he was,

  1878. so then he

  1879. says,

  1880. but I'm

  1881. going to be

  1882. condemned

  1883. to death

  1884. and delivered

  1885. to the

  1886. Gentiles

  1887. and I'm

  1888. going to

  1889. be crucified

  1890. and of

  1891. course the

  1892. glorious

  1893. promise of

  1894. his

  1895. resurrection.

  1896. But they're

  1897. confused by

  1898. this.

  1899. What's that

  1900. going to

  1901. look like?

  1902. Wait a

  1903. second,

  1904. that seems

  1905. backwards

  1906. and upside

  1907. down.

  1908. So verse

  1909. 20 says,

  1910. then the

  1911. mother of

  1912. the sons

  1913. of Zebedee

  1914. came up

  1915. to him

  1916. with her

  1917. sons and

  1918. kneeling

  1919. before him

  1920. she asked

  1921. him for

  1922. something.

  1923. And he

  1924. said to

  1925. her,

  1926. do you

  1927. want?

  1928. She said

  1929. to him,

  1930. say that

  1931. these two

  1932. sons of

  1933. mine are

  1934. to sit

  1935. one at

  1936. your right

  1937. hand and

  1938. one at

  1939. your left

  1940. in your

  1941. kingdom.

  1942. Jesus

  1943. answered,

  1944. you do

  1945. not know

  1946. what you

  1947. are asking.

  1948. are you

  1949. able to

  1950. drink the

  1951. cup that

  1952. I am to

  1953. drink?

  1954. They said

  1955. to him,

  1956. we are

  1957. able.

  1958. Now he's

  1959. talking about

  1960. the cup of

  1961. the wrath,

  1962. eternal wrath

  1963. of God.

  1964. And they

  1965. arrogantly say

  1966. we are

  1967. able.

  1968. He said

  1969. to them,

  1970. you will

  1971. drink my

  1972. cup.

  1973. And here

  1974. he's talking

  1975. now about

  1976. the suffering,

  1977. filling up

  1978. the afflictions

  1979. of Christ.

  1980. Christ,

  1981. but to

  1982. sit at

  1983. my right

  1984. hand and

  1985. at my

  1986. left is

  1987. not mine

  1988. to grant,

  1989. but it

  1990. is for

  1991. those for

  1992. whom it

  1993. has been

  1994. prepared by

  1995. my father.

  1996. And when

  1997. the ten heard

  1998. it,

  1999. they were

  2000. indignant

  2001. at the

  2002. two brothers.

  2003. But Jesus

  2004. called them

  2005. to him

  2006. and said,

  2007. you know

  2008. that the

  2009. rulers of

  2010. the Gentiles

  2011. lord it

  2012. over them

  2013. and their

  2014. great ones

  2015. exercise

  2016. authority

  2017. over them.

  2018. It shall

  2019. not be

  2020. so among

  2021. you.

  2022. But whoever

  2023. would be

  2024. great among

  2025. you must

  2026. be your

  2027. servant.

  2028. And whoever

  2029. would be

  2030. first among

  2031. you must

  2032. be your

  2033. slave.

  2034. Even as

  2035. the son of

  2036. man came

  2037. not to

  2038. be served,

  2039. but to

  2040. serve and

  2041. to give his

  2042. life as a

  2043. ransom for

  2044. many.

  2045. And we

  2046. know now

  2047. and in a

  2048. future coming

  2049. reality,

  2050. the name of

  2051. Christ,

  2052. every knee

  2053. will bow

  2054. and every

  2055. tongue will

  2056. confess that

  2057. Jesus Christ

  2058. is Lord.

  2059. He has

  2060. been and

  2061. will be for

  2062. eternity

  2063. exalted.

  2064. And we

  2065. will join in

  2066. that wonderful

  2067. celebration and

  2068. be glorified

  2069. alongside if

  2070. we will be

  2071. humble.

  2072. So we see

  2073. in this text

  2074. a sobering,

  2075. extremely

  2076. important,

  2077. of highest,

  2078. greatest importance,

  2079. comprehensive

  2080. command.

  2081. Submit

  2082. yourselves

  2083. therefore

  2084. to God.

  2085. And a

  2086. summary command

  2087. which is

  2088. accompanied

  2089. by a

  2090. glorious

  2091. promise.

  2092. Humble

  2093. yourselves

  2094. before the
