  1. James chapter 4, verse 13. We're picking right up where we left off last week.

    James 4:13

  2. As I prepared for the sermon this week, a song came to mind, a song that I listened to a lot in high school.

  3. In 1978, Billy Joel, the piano man, published one of his famous songs called My Life.

  4. So you can already hear the teenage angst.

  5. This song came to mind because it's a song in which the narrator is obsessed with himself.

  6. It's his life, and he will live it however he wants.

  7. Just a few lyrics from this song.

  8. He says, you can speak your mind, but not on my time.

  9. He says, they will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place,

  10. and they'll tell you you can't sleep with somebody else.

  11. Oh, but sooner or later, you'll sleep in your own space.

  12. Either way, it's okay.

  13. You wake up with yourself.

  14. And the chorus of the song is this.

  15. I don't need you to worry for me because I'm all right.

  16. I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home.

  17. I don't care what you say anymore.

  18. This is my life.

  19. Go ahead with your own life.

  20. Leave me alone.

  21. So this song relates to our text in that here we have a singer who is describing his hatred for any kind of authority whatsoever.

  22. He never mentions God, parents, government, elders, or anything like that,

  23. but it's clear he wants to be free of any and all authority,

  24. to just do what he wants to do to live his life.

  25. And I doubt this song is super widely known today,

  26. but the spirit of this song, right,

  27. the message, the teaching of this song is all pervasive.

  28. It's everywhere.

  29. In fact, Billy Joel didn't come up with this idea, right?

  30. It's just him describing any other sinner's heart.

  31. Frank Sinatra had a song as well called My Life or My Way in which he basically said more or less the same thing.

  32. He says, I don't care how any of you feel, I did it my way.

  33. A more current song that embodies these values,

  34. these values of self-love, self-autonomy, self-sufficiency,

  35. which you should really not listen to,

  36. is DNA by Kendrick Lamar.

  37. And I only know about that from when I was younger and caught up in things of the world.

  38. But let's just say it's so bad I wouldn't even dare quote it here.

  39. But the point is there is a whole host of songs from generation to generation that teach this lesson.

  40. More songs than we could possibly cover today if we wanted to.

  41. And they all teach this.

  42. You are the God of your life.

  43. Now go out and take what you want, when you want it, and how you want it,

  44. and give no regard to everybody else because they're just in your way.

  45. So this is what we will see in our text today.

  46. James is addressing believers in this text who are caught up in this worldly thinking.

  47. Believers who forget that they serve a sovereign Lord

  48. who demands their total devotion in singular worship.

  49. And we're going to see James' prescription for this problem,

  50. which on the surface seems simple,

  51. but I think he's making a much more pervasive comment

  52. on what the Christian life ought to look like.

  53. So let's read our text together, picking up in verse 13, chapter 4 of James.

  54. James writes,

  55. Come now, you who say,

  56. today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town

  57. and spend a year there and trade and make a profit.

  58. And he just stops and he says,

  59. Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.

  60. What is your life?

  61. For you are a mist that appears for little time and then vanishes.

  62. Instead, you ought to say,

  63. If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.

  64. As it is, you boast in your arrogance.

  65. All such boasting is evil.

  66. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it,

  67. for him it is sin.

  68. So I want to start by just noting five assumptions of these men

  69. that James addresses in verse 13.

  70. Five assumptions of these men.

  71. So again, they say,

  72. Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town

  73. and spend a year there and trade and make a profit.

  74. So the first assumption is that these men assume when they will go.

  75. They assume today or tomorrow we will go.

  76. So try to think with me of all the reasons why that might not work out.

  77. Maybe the horses escape.

  78. Maybe the roads are bandit infested.

  79. Maybe the weather would not permit them.

  80. If you played the computer game Oregon Trail,

  81. maybe dysentery strikes and wins again.

  82. Then the very fact that they say today or tomorrow

  83. suggests they don't even really know when they will try to leave.

  84. So this is James' way of mocking them.

  85. You don't even know.

  86. And you know that you don't know.

  87. The second assumption is that these men assume where they will go.

  88. They assume they will go into such and such a town.

  89. They have a plan.

  90. They have a charted course.

  91. They desire to go from point A to point B.

  92. What's to stop them?

  93. And again, think of the possibilities with me.

  94. Maybe they get lost on the road.

  95. Maybe they get kidnapped on the road.

  96. I think of Joseph who never intended to go to Egypt,

  97. and yet that's where he ended up.

  98. Or Jonah who gets dragged by a great fish

  99. to the very last place he wanted to go, Nineveh.

  100. Maybe they turn back due to weariness or their desires change.

  101. Okay, so the third assumption is that these men assume

  102. how long they will remain in that city, right?

  103. They assume they will spend a year there.

  104. And you might think, well, surely they're in control

  105. of where they'll stay, right, for how long.

  106. Once they're there, surely they can guarantee that.

  107. What's to move them?

  108. But again, let's put on our thinking caps.

  109. Maybe a natural disaster forces them to move on.

  110. Maybe they hate it in that city, right?

  111. They thought they'd love it, but they get there.

  112. Ah, I don't like this. Let's go.

  113. Maybe their wives want them home early.

  114. Sorry, boys.

  115. Right?

  116. And the fourth assumption is that these men assume

  117. what they will do.

  118. They assume they will trade.

  119. So this is maybe a little easier for us all

  120. to imagine the innumerable possibilities

  121. to why they might not be able to trade.

  122. Right?

  123. Maybe someone else is already trading the same goods

  124. for a far better price.

  125. So the competition's too great.

  126. They're just not going to cut it.

  127. Maybe the political climate is not tolerant

  128. towards their business or their ethnicity or whatever.

  129. Right?

  130. Maybe there's some sort of prejudice

  131. that's keeping them from trading

  132. in that particular city.

  133. And the fifth assumption

  134. is that they will assume what the outcome will be.

  135. They assume we will profit.

  136. So one final time, let's consider some possibilities.

  137. Maybe the economy crashes.

  138. Maybe wars break out.

  139. Maybe something crazy and unimaginable happens

  140. like taxes getting hiked excessively

  141. to stop cow farting.

  142. Right?

  143. And those taxes bury whatever profit they had.

  144. And now perhaps me saying maybe so much

  145. is getting annoying and old,

  146. but it is by design.

  147. I want you all to feel the depth

  148. and the width and the breadth

  149. of the absurd presumptions

  150. on the part of these men.

  151. I want you all to hear and feel that.

  152. And I'm confident

  153. we could spend the rest of today

  154. thinking of the innumerable variables

  155. that could change their plans.

  156. So many unknowns,

  157. so much fickleness,

  158. and so much frailty.

  159. So these men lack

  160. any sense of reality.

  161. They speak as though they are all-knowing,

  162. as if they are all-powerful

  163. and can make what happened, happen.

  164. Whatever they want to happen.

  165. In other words,

  166. they talk as if they are sovereign.

  167. It's my life.

  168. I'll do it my way.

  169. It's in my DNA.

  170. So now you know what inspired those three songs.

  171. But there are two realities

  172. which James gives us

  173. that should humble these men.

  174. Two realities that should humble

  175. these men.

  176. And they're found in verse 14.

  177. James writes that,

  178. You do not know

  179. what tomorrow will bring.

  180. What is your life?

  181. For you are a mist

  182. that appears for a little while

  183. and then vanishes.

  184. So the first reality

  185. that should humble these men

  186. is that humans are not all-knowing.

  187. This idea was at the heart

  188. of our text last week,

  189. so I'll be brief here.

  190. But as shown in verse 13,

  191. James is now explicitly stating

  192. with the authority of God

  193. that we do not know

  194. what tomorrow will bring.

  195. We are not God

  196. that we should know

  197. or could know these things.

  198. We are not prophets or apostles

  199. with a divine insight of any kind

  200. so as to speak with authority

  201. on what tomorrow will bring.

  202. And even the smartest people

  203. among us

  204. in fields like

  205. meteorology,

  206. economics,

  207. or politics

  208. have a lifetime record

  209. of being wrong.

  210. They predict things

  211. and they're wrong.

  212. And again,

  213. if you want a fuller

  214. biblical teaching

  215. on this idea,

  216. go ahead and check out

  217. last week's.

  218. But in one sentence,

  219. we are not all-knowing

  220. and that should humble us.

  221. Okay?

  222. The second reality

  223. that should humble these men

  224. is that life is fleeting.

  225. So the first reality,

  226. we are not all-knowing.

  227. The second reality

  228. is that life is fleeting.

  229. I'm fairly confident

  230. that this text of scripture

  231. inspired one of

  232. William Shakespeare's

  233. famous lines from Macbeth,

  234. although it has a nihilistic twist

  235. to his character.

  236. But Macbeth says,

  237. tomorrow and tomorrow

  238. and tomorrow

  239. creeps in this petty pace

  240. from day to day

  241. to the last syllable

  242. of recorded time.

  243. All our yesterdays

  244. have lighted fools

  245. the way to dusty death.

  246. So he's reflecting

  247. that everybody will die.

  248. And then he says,

  249. out, out, brief candle.

  250. Life's but a walking shadow,

  251. a poor player

  252. that struts and frets

  253. his hour upon the stage

  254. and then is heard no more.

  255. So you can see

  256. he's reflecting

  257. on the ignorance of man

  258. and their foolish pursuits

  259. in the light of the fact

  260. that they all die.

  261. At some point,

  262. in some way,

  263. in every case,

  264. everyone dies.

  265. So whereas Shakespeare

  266. thinks of life

  267. as a fleeting candle

  268. that's snuffed

  269. in a moment,

  270. James compares it

  271. to a mist

  272. that appears

  273. for a little while

  274. and then vanishes.

  275. Dr. John MacArthur

  276. draws this picture

  277. out for us well

  278. in his commentary.

  279. He says,

  280. life is as transitory

  281. as a puff of smoke

  282. from a fire,

  283. the steam that rises

  284. from a cup of coffee

  285. or one's breath,

  286. briefly visible

  287. to plan and live it out

  288. without consideration

  289. of God's will.

  290. Or better,

  291. consider the words

  292. of the psalmist

  293. in Psalm 78,

    Psalms 78:39

  294. verse 39.

  295. He writes,

  296. thus he remembered

  297. that they were but flesh,

  298. that they were but human.

  299. A wind that passes

  300. and does not return.

  301. And so think of that,

  302. a wind that's passed you by.

  303. How long does that last?

  304. Not very long.

  305. In fact,

  306. the Bible never talks

  307. about life being long,

  308. but it always expresses

  309. how quick it is,

  310. how fleeting it is,

  311. how it's over

  312. in a moment.

  313. And every moment we live

  314. is a moment

  315. closer to this

  316. sudden conclusion.

  317. And sadly,

  318. we're all too familiar

  319. with this reality,

  320. so I won't belabor

  321. on this point longer,

  322. but I do want to ask,

  323. why would James cite

  324. this specifically?

  325. Why would knowing

  326. we're going to die

  327. change the way

  328. we use our time

  329. and make our plans

  330. and live our lives?

  331. What is James

  332. implying here?

  333. And I think it's easy

  334. to assume that James

  335. has judgment in mind.

  336. He's reminding

  337. his Jewish Christian audience

  338. that when they die,

  339. they will be judged

  340. by God

  341. for the way

  342. they live their life.

  343. Luke 12,

  344. 16 through 20

  345. records Jesus' parable

  346. that he gave

  347. in response to someone

  348. asking about splitting

  349. his brother's inheritance.

  350. It says,

  351. And he told them

  352. a parable,

  353. saying,

  354. The land of a rich man

  355. produced plentifully.

  356. And he thought to himself,

  357. What shall I do,

  358. for I have nowhere

  359. to store my crops?

  360. And he said,

  361. I will do this.

  362. I will tear down

  363. my barns

  364. and build larger ones,

  365. and there I will store

  366. all my grains

  367. and my goods.

  368. And I will say to my soul,

  369. So,

  370. you have ample goods

  371. laid up for many years.

  372. Relax,

  373. eat,

  374. drink,

  375. be merry.

  376. But God said to him,

  377. Fool,

  378. this night your soul

  379. is required of you

  380. and the things you have prepared,

  381. whose will they be?

  382. So while Jesus

  383. is making a point

  384. about the extremely low value

  385. of earthly success

  386. and possessions,

  387. James is making a point

  388. about not living

  389. as practical atheists,

  390. as if we aren't called

  391. to live for God

  392. and his will.

  393. But for both,

  394. the undergirding argument

  395. is that you will be judged

  396. by God

  397. with condemnation

  398. if this is the way

  399. of your life.

  400. Okay,

  401. so our first application

  402. is another

  403. implicit call

  404. to humility.

  405. And on the one hand,

  406. I hate using

  407. this application

  408. again,

  409. because,

  410. you know,

  411. I want my sermons

  412. to be fly

  413. and on the top 100

  414. billboard

  415. if such a thing exists.

  416. But this is the,

  417. on the much larger hand,

  418. though,

  419. I want to be faithful

  420. to the text,

  421. faithful to what James

  422. is saying.

  423. And he's hitting this point

  424. again and again

  425. to be humble.

  426. And I think it speaks

  427. so much to how arrogant

  428. we really can be.

  429. And if you're sitting there

  430. thinking,

  431. well,

  432. this isn't really me,

  433. like,

  434. I've got that one down.

  435. This is probably for you.

  436. Okay?

  437. And that's why James

  438. says it over and over

  439. and over again

  440. or implies it over

  441. and over and over again.

  442. So why should we be humble?

  443. Well,

  444. there are plenty of reasons.

  445. The two reasons

  446. in this text,

  447. as I've already said,

  448. because we are not

  449. all-knowing

  450. and we will die.

  451. We will face

  452. judgment.

  453. So we have to be vigilant.

  454. We have to be on guard

  455. with our hearts

  456. so as to not

  457. give way

  458. to sin.

  459. And in a moment,

  460. I will share more

  461. on what this humility

  462. specifically looks like

  463. in this text.

  464. We'll see it in verse 15.

  465. But I want to skip

  466. that verse for now

  467. and save it

  468. until the end

  469. because I think

  470. in that verse

  471. we're going to find

  472. the main thrust

  473. of this whole thing.

  474. That is where

  475. we will find

  476. the all-pervasive

  477. but subtle comment

  478. of James

  479. which I alluded to

  480. earlier.

  481. So before we get there,

  482. I want to jump

  483. to verse 16

  484. where we will see

  485. the heart

  486. of these sinners

  487. and the heart

  488. of these men.

  489. So James 4, 16,

  490. he says,

  491. As it is,

  492. you boast

  493. in your arrogance.

  494. All such boasting

  495. is evil.

  496. So James makes it clear

  497. what is going on

  498. in their hearts.

  499. They are arrogant

  500. and they are committing

  501. evil or sin.

  502. They make their plans

  503. without any

  504. acknowledgement of God

  505. because they think

  506. they don't need God.

  507. You might call

  508. their sin

  509. the sin

  510. of self-sufficiency.

  511. I think a large part

  512. of our culture

  513. would tend to view

  514. self-sufficiency

  515. as a virtue.

  516. This idea

  517. that I danced

  518. around with earlier

  519. with the secular music,

  520. being able,

  521. competent,

  522. powerful,

  523. knowledgeable

  524. to do any

  525. and all things

  526. for your own self,

  527. for your own substance,

  528. for your own will.

  529. And I struggle

  530. with this sin

  531. all the time,

  532. personally,

  533. when it's at its worst,

  534. I tend not to pray.

  535. And why would I?

  536. In those moments,

  537. I'm acting as though

  538. I don't need God,

  539. so why would I ask

  540. him for anything?

  541. Which is,

  542. of course,

  543. evil.

  544. And it's the opposite

  545. of humility.

  546. Another consequence

  547. of this slippery slope

  548. of sin

  549. is that it leads

  550. to this false boasting.

  551. It sounds something

  552. like this for all of us.

  553. Hey, everyone,

  554. look at this thing

  555. I built.

  556. Look at this money

  557. I made.

  558. Look at the sermon

  559. I preached.

  560. Look at the homeless man

  561. that I was so kind to.

  562. It's this attitude

  563. of sounding the trumpet

  564. before ourselves

  565. to whether the work

  566. is innately evil

  567. or made evil

  568. by our prideful motive.

  569. It's an invitation

  570. to worship,

  571. but not an invitation

  572. to worship God,

  573. an invitation to worship

  574. me,

  575. myself,

  576. and I.

  577. But to be clear,

  578. there's nothing wrong

  579. with boasting.

  580. Boasting in our arrogance,

  581. boasting in the world,

  582. boasting in things

  583. like that

  584. is evil,

  585. of course,

  586. but we are

  587. called

  588. to boast.

  589. So this is our

  590. second application.

  591. Boast

  592. only

  593. in the Lord.

  594. Jeremiah 9,

  595. 23-24 says,

  596. Thus says the Lord,

  597. Let not the wise man

  598. boast in his wisdom,

  599. let not the mighty man

  600. boast in his might,

  601. let not the rich man

  602. boast in his riches,

  603. but let him who boasts

  604. boast in this,

  605. that he understands

  606. and knows me,

  607. that I am the Lord

  608. who practices

  609. steadfast love,

  610. justice,

  611. and righteousness

  612. in the earth.

  613. For in these things

  614. I delight,

  615. declares the Lord.

  616. So like James,

  617. God told Jeremiah

  618. that man should

  619. put off this

  620. self-sufficient attitude

  621. and put on this

  622. humble adoration

  623. of God,

  624. that if we were

  625. to ever boast,

  626. we should boast

  627. only in the Lord,

  628. as Paul summarily

  629. says in 2 Corinthians

  630. 10,

  631. 17.

  632. And praise God

  633. that he delights

  634. in love,

  635. justice,

  636. and righteousness.

  637. This is why

  638. we have the gospel,

  639. because God

  640. loved us

  641. even while we were

  642. yet sinners

  643. and sent his son

  644. to die for us

  645. in Romans 5, 8.

  646. Because God

  647. justifies the ungodly

  648. which results

  649. in Christ's righteousness

  650. imputed to us.

  651. Paul says in Romans

  652. 4, 5,

  653. and to the one

  654. who does not work

  655. but believes in him

  656. who justifies

  657. the ungodly,

  658. his faith

  659. is counted

  660. as righteousness.

  661. So anytime

  662. the Bible

  663. gives us

  664. a verb

  665. or an action

  666. related to salvation,

  667. God is the subject.

  668. In other words,

  669. he does everything

  670. on our behalf

  671. and despite ourselves.

  672. Romans 8, 29-30

  673. outlines

  674. this entire process

  675. of salvation.

  676. And notice,

  677. God is the subject,

  678. the church

  679. is the recipient,

  680. the church

  681. does nothing,

  682. God does everything.

  683. Paul writes,

  684. for those whom

  685. God foreknew,

  686. he also predestined

  687. to be conformed

  688. to the image

  689. of his son

  690. in order that

  691. he might be

  692. the firstborn

  693. among many brothers.

  694. And those whom

  695. God predestined,

  696. he also called.

  697. And those who

  698. he called,

  699. he also justified.

  700. And those who

  701. he justified,

  702. he also glorified.

  703. So this is our God

  704. who does all

  705. these things.

  706. So naturally,

  707. and of course,

  708. we should boast

  709. in him.

  710. What else is there

  711. to boast about?

  712. Every other kind

  713. of boasting

  714. is evil.

  715. So we boast

  716. in the Lord

  717. and the Lord alone.

  718. Now James gives us

  719. a warning

  720. in verse 17

  721. and I have to confess

  722. it seems somewhat

  723. broad and unrelated

  724. at first glance

  725. but I think it connects

  726. in two ways.

  727. So just to discuss

  728. the first one for now,

  729. we have a warning

  730. and I think it's

  731. an implied call

  732. to repentance.

  733. Right?

  734. Verse 17,

  735. he says,

  736. so whoever knows

  737. the right thing

  738. to do

  739. and fails to do it,

  740. for him

  741. it is sin.

  742. So James is saying,

  743. hey, you know

  744. this thing is wrong

  745. so change the way

  746. you live your life.

  747. Repent.

  748. Turn around.

  749. Go the other way.

  750. He's recognizing

  751. that everyone

  752. deep down

  753. knows

  754. they are violating

  755. God's law

  756. and some of you

  757. have heard this

  758. called natural law

  759. or the law

  760. of the conscience.

  761. Whatever you want

  762. to call it,

  763. James is saying,

  764. I know that

  765. even though you live

  766. as if you were

  767. autonomous and

  768. self-sufficient,

  769. that you do in fact

  770. know there is a God

  771. whom you are trying

  772. to run from.

  773. That deep down

  774. you are suppressing

  775. this truth.

  776. So stop pretending.

  777. Right?

  778. So we have another

  779. application from last week

  780. again.

  781. Our third application

  782. is to repent.

  783. If you've been living

  784. lately the way

  785. these assuming men

  786. have from the

  787. beginning of our text,

  788. it's time to wake up.

  789. Right?

  790. To recognize,

  791. I have been living

  792. as though God

  793. were not real.

  794. I have been living

  795. as though I will not

  796. answer to him.

  797. I've been living

  798. as though it's my world

  799. for me to inhabit

  800. the way I want.

  801. Right?

  802. If that's been you,

  803. if that's been your

  804. plans lately,

  805. if that's been your

  806. dreams lately,

  807. that's sin

  808. and you need

  809. to repent.

  810. I love the hymn

  811. entitled

  812. When I Survey

  813. the Wondrous Cross.

  814. It ends with this line,

  815. Love so amazing,

  816. so divine,

  817. demands my soul,

  818. my life,

  819. and my all.

  820. So that's hitting

  821. that wholeness idea

  822. that we've talked about

  823. in the weeks prior

  824. with James,

  825. that we're no longer

  826. here to live for ourselves

  827. as Christ followers,

  828. but we are here

  829. to live for him

  830. and him alone.

  831. And so this leads us

  832. to the all-pervasive

  833. comment that our text

  834. is built around

  835. in verse 15.

  836. And this is the second

  837. way that verse 17

  838. is tied to James'

  839. thoughts here.

  840. So this is the big

  841. sentence of today,

  842. right?

  843. The heart of this text

  844. is that James wants us

  845. to live life

  846. in such a way

  847. that we are constantly

  848. reminded of our

  849. servitude to God.

  850. So I'll restate that.

  851. The heart of this text

  852. is that James wants us

  853. to live life

  854. in such a way

  855. that we are constantly

  856. reminded of our

  857. servitude to God.

  858. So this is the final

  859. section for today,

  860. what the Christian life

  861. ought to look like,

  862. what it should look like.

  863. So verse 15,

  864. James says,

  865. instead you ought to say,

  866. if the Lord wills,

  867. we will live

  868. and do this

  869. or that.

  870. So James says instead,

  871. so he's contrasting

  872. this statement

  873. with the assuming

  874. statements of the

  875. arrogant men

  876. in verse 13.

  877. He's reminding them

  878. that because God

  879. is sovereign

  880. and worthy of all

  881. worship and praise,

  882. his will alone

  883. will and should

  884. be accomplished.

  885. God deserves this

  886. and not only does

  887. he deserve it,

  888. but he will make it

  889. happen.

  890. Paul says in

  891. Philippians 2,

  892. 9 through 11,

  893. therefore God

  894. has highly exalted

  895. Christ and bestowed

  896. on him the name

  897. that is above

  898. every name,

  899. so that at the name

  900. of Jesus every knee

  901. should bow in heaven

  902. and on earth

  903. and under the earth

  904. and every tongue

  905. confess that Jesus

  906. Christ is Lord

  907. to the glory of God

  908. the Father.

  909. God's will not only

  910. ought to be done,

  911. but it will be done.

  912. And to clarify,

  913. James is not saying

  914. we cannot make plans.

  915. It's biblical to plan,

  916. to save,

  917. to invest,

  918. to work,

  919. to provide for your family,

  920. to make wise decisions.

  921. He's merely speaking

  922. against this gainful,

  923. arrogant,

  924. boastful planning

  925. that neglects

  926. consideration of God

  927. and his will

  928. and his character.

  929. I just want to leave

  930. that as a clarification.

  931. So how is this

  932. an all-pervasive comment

  933. then?

  934. What do I mean by that?

  935. I've been circling it

  936. for a while now.

  937. Well, I don't think

  938. James' main intent here

  939. is to say God is sovereign.

  940. I think he says that here.

  941. I think he's said it elsewhere.

  942. He's made it clear.

  943. It's important

  944. and directly related

  945. to what James is saying.

  946. I also don't think

  947. he is merely saying

  948. include this statement

  949. in your life, right?

  950. This idea that we should

  951. just throw around

  952. if the Lord wills

  953. to sound Christian,

  954. pious, or holy.

  955. Although I also think

  956. he does want us

  957. to say that more regularly.

  958. But I think James

  959. is talking more specifically

  960. about a healthy church culture,

  961. right?

  962. And this is just

  963. one specific thing

  964. he's tapping on

  965. to hit that larger picture, right?

  966. He's writing to the church.

  967. He's telling everyone

  968. in that church

  969. to speak this way.

  970. So there are other ways

  971. to communicate

  972. if the Lord wills.

  973. It's not so much

  974. about the exact words,

  975. although that's a wonderful

  976. way to say it.

  977. But he wants them all

  978. to speak to one another

  979. with such language.

  980. And I think it's significant

  981. that in verse 15

  982. he says,

  983. you ought to say

  984. rather than you ought

  985. to think, believe, or know.

  986. And don't get me wrong,

  987. we do need to know,

  988. believe, and think

  989. in this way

  990. if the Lord wills, right?

  991. We should think

  992. in those terms.

  993. That God's will

  994. should be done.

  995. That God is sovereign.

  996. That God should have

  997. his way.

  998. But James has made clear

  999. throughout his epistle

  1000. already this idea.

  1001. So I think he's saying

  1002. something more pervasive

1003. and it is church culture.

  1004. And to be clear,

  1005. I'm not talking about

  1006. a church brand

  1007. or a marketing strategy

  1008. or anything like that.

1009. So what kind of culture

  1010. am I talking about?

  1011. I'm talking about

  1012. the kind of culture

  1013. where we are constantly

  1014. reminding each other

  1015. of who God is.

  1016. What he has done

1017. and what he is doing.

  1018. The kind of culture

  1019. that loves God

  1020. and loves neighbor.

1021. And the kind of culture

  1022. that daily reinforces

  1023. the truth

1024. that we are God's servants.

  1025. Because we need reminders.

1026. Because we forget our place.

  1027. Because we can easily

  1028. lose sight of God

  1029. in our life

  1030. apart from our participation

1031. in the body of Christ.

1032. And this is especially important

  1033. when we are surrounded

  1034. by a secular culture

  1035. singing songs

  1036. that teach

  1037. the complete opposite.

  1038. Songs like the ones

1039. I shared at the beginning.

  1040. How easy it is

1041. for us to get swept up

1042. in that line of thinking.

1043. And it's not just in songs.

  1044. It's in movies, books,

  1045. politics,

  1046. advertisement,

  1047. education,

  1048. video games,

  1049. you name it,

  1050. it's there.

1051. And so how do you combat

  1052. that worldly pervasive culture,

  1053. that pervasive worldly thinking

  1054. that idolizes self?

  1055. I know this,

1056. you don't appeal to it

1057. like so many so-called churches

  1058. are doing.

  1059. Rather you create

  1060. your own pervasive culture,

  1061. a resilient church culture

  1062. if you will.

  1063. And there are

  1064. two wonderful things

  1065. about this pervasive

  1066. resilient church culture

  1067. that I'm describing.

  1068. And I think James

  1069. is touching on.

  1070. One,

1071. the church is the will

  1072. of our sovereign God

  1073. and Christ will build

  1074. his church.

  1075. He says in Matthew 16, 18,

  1076. Jesus says,

  1077. And I tell you,

  1078. you are Peter

  1079. and on this rock

1080. I will build my church.

  1081. It's emphatic.

  1082. It will happen.

1083. There's no question about it.

  1084. And he adds,

1085. And the gates of hell

  1086. shall not prevail

  1087. against it.

  1088. Or in Philippians 1, 6,

  1089. Paul says,

1090. And I am sure of this,

  1091. that God who began

1092. a good work in you

1093. will bring it to completion

1094. at the day of Jesus Christ.

  1095. The salvation,

  1096. the sanctification,

  1097. it's all being realized.

  1098. It will happen.

  1099. It's emphatic.

  1100. The church body

  1101. will be built

  1102. and the body

  1103. will be sanctified.

  1104. So when I'm talking

  1105. about church culture,

  1106. I'm talking about

  1107. that sanctification

  1108. being lived out

  1109. by the members

  1110. of the church.

  1111. And the second thing

  1112. is that the work

  1113. is already done.

1114. We just need to live it out

  1115. and realize it.

  1116. It is done

  1117. because of the cross

  1118. of Christ.

  1119. John 19, 30,

  1120. just before Christ

  1121. dies on the cross,

  1122. after bearing the wrath

  1123. of God

1124. on behalf of the church,

  1125. Christ said,

  1126. It is finished.

  1127. Not fully realized,

  1128. but finished nonetheless.

  1129. It is only

  1130. a matter of time.

  1131. So what then

  1132. does it look like

  1133. to live out

  1134. this church culture,

1135. to live among one another

  1136. as brothers and sisters

  1137. in Christ?

1138. And a lot could be said here,

  1139. but I'll close

  1140. with this final application

1141. as a good starting point.

1142. To blow up James' words

  1143. to the larger picture

1144. that I think he intended,

  1145. our final application,

1146. is to use our interactions

  1147. in such a way

  1148. to remind each other

1149. of God and his word.

  1150. Paul says

  1151. in 1 Thessalonians 5, 11,

  1152. Therefore,

  1153. encourage one another

1154. and build one another up

1155. just as you are doing.

  1156. He also says

  1157. in Ephesians 5, 19,

  1158. Address one another

  1159. in psalms and hymns

  1160. and spiritual songs,

  1161. singing and making melody

  1162. to the Lord

  1163. with all your heart.

  1164. Again, there's that

  1165. totality language.

1166. So whether we are singing,

  1167. talking,

  1168. playing a game,

  1169. or whatever,

  1170. let's do so

1171. in a spirit of love

  1172. with a motive

1173. to build one another up

1174. for the glory of God.

1175. And I have to confess,

  1176. I'm not the greatest

  1177. at encouraging people.

  1178. It's not my strength.

1179. Some of you are like me.

  1180. I feel weird giving

  1181. and receiving

  1182. encouragements

  1183. or compliments,

  1184. things of that nature.

  1185. In fact,

  1186. I remember calling

  1187. Nathan in Louisville,

  1188. letting him know

1189. that I was moving back down.

  1190. And I made a great talk,

  1191. caught up, you know.

  1192. And at the end,

  1193. he said,

  1194. All right, man,

  1195. that sounds great.

  1196. I love you, brother.

  1197. And it felt like

  1198. a ten-second pause.

1199. It was probably only three,

1200. but I just was taken

  1201. off guard by that

  1202. because I just don't

1203. really say that to people

1204. other than like my wife,

  1205. my parents, you know.

1206. It's just kind of weird to me.

1207. And then I finally said,

  1208. Okay, man,

  1209. we'll see ya.

  1210. And I took a shower.

  1211. But it shouldn't be

1212. that weird for me to say.

  1213. It shouldn't be weird.

  1214. It shouldn't be uncomfortable.

  1215. It shouldn't be unnatural.

  1216. I thank God

  1217. that I don't have to greet

1218. anyone with a holy kiss,

  1219. as Paul said.

1220. But it shouldn't be that weird.

  1221. It should be normal.

1222. It should feel as natural

  1223. as praising God

  1224. or praying,

  1225. eating food,

  1226. drinking water.

  1227. It should feel normal.

1228. And don't get me wrong,

1229. I do love all of you.

  1230. I know I've

  1231. neglected the importance

1232. of saying these kind of things

  1233. regularly.

1234. for all manner of foolish

  1235. and petty

  1236. reasons.

  1237. And I'll tell you,

  1238. I think sometimes

  1239. my personal excuse is,

1240. well, you just don't know that.

1241. It's easy for me to think,

1242. I play in the band,

  1243. I preach,

1244. I've helped you all over the years

  1245. with different things.

1246. I've done all this stuff.

  1247. So surely they know

  1248. that I love them.

  1249. And it's true,

  1250. nothing says,

  1251. I love you more

  1252. than action,

  1253. but it is false

  1254. to think

  1255. as I have.

  1256. And not verbalizing

  1257. these kind of things

  1258. is insignificant

  1259. because I'm so prone

  1260. to think.

  1261. And so don't fall

  1262. into that snare

  1263. as I have.

  1264. And so let's talk

  1265. to one another

  1266. in such a way

  1267. that sets us apart

  1268. from the world,

  1269. in such a way

  1270. that is loving,

  1271. in such a way

  1272. that sets our minds

  1273. on our sovereign

  1274. creator God

  1275. and his word.

  1276. To that end,

  1277. let's pray.
