  1. Psalm 115.

  2. You are never more as God intended you to be

  3. and we are worshipers.

  4. It is wired into our very being.

  5. If we do not worship the one true and living God,

  6. we will inevitably worship it something lesser.

  7. These two sets of three verses

  8. each serve as an inclusio

  9. for verses 4 through 15.

  10. These types of structures are important for us.

  11. They're meant to draw us

  12. to central things being taught.

  13. They bookend for us

  14. a juxtaposition between the worship of false gods

  15. and the strong confidence that we can have

  16. in worshiping the one true and living God.

  17. So here has been my prayer for you this morning.

  18. If you are of the nations,

  19. one of those who do not belong to God,

  20. who worships the creation rather than the creator,

  21. my prayer for you is that you will behold

  22. the steadfast love and faithfulness of God

  23. this morning toward his people

  24. and that you will be moved

  25. to place saving faith in the person and work

  26. of Jesus Christ, right?

  27. That you might be counted amongst his people.

  28. If you are already of God's people,

  29. if you've already placed this saving faith in Jesus Christ,

  30. my prayer for you is that you will behold

  31. the steadfast love and faithfulness of God

  32. afresh this morning.

  33. You will see it once again

  34. and that he will show you

  35. how inclined you are

  36. to still worship at the feet

  37. of the creation.

  38. Having been adopted into the family of God,

  39. how likely you are to turn back from him

  40. to lesser forms of worship.

  41. So there are two points for this morning

  42. if you're a note taker.

  43. Our number one,

  44. the futility of false gods.

  45. And number two,

  46. the glory of the one true and living God.

  47. The psalmist here makes for us

  48. such a very clear point

  49. and he like stacks up the imagery for us

  50. to help us to understand

  51. the futility or uselessness

  52. of false gods.

  53. He says in verse four,

  54. their idols are silver and gold,

  55. the work of human hands.

  56. Idols are created things.

  57. The psalmist tells us in verse four

  58. they are the work of human hands.

  59. They are made of precious metals here

  60. in verse four,

  61. but they are made all the same.

  62. Made by human hands.

  63. And he elaborates this point

  64. with these accusations of uselessness.

  65. Verse five,

  66. they have mouths.

  67. That is an image of a mouth,

  68. but they don't speak.

  69. In juxtaposition to that,

  70. Genesis chapter one

  71. tells of God creating the world

  72. with mighty words.

  73. He has spoken and speaks,

  74. but idols are dumb.

  75. They cannot utter anything.

  76. Certainly not to tell us anything

  77. of any value whatsoever.

  78. They cannot speak words of promise

  79. or encouraging or threatening.

  80. They also have eyes,

  81. but do not see.

  82. Again,

  83. in juxtaposition,

  84. when Hagar is told by an angel

  85. of the Lord

  86. that she will bear a son,

  87. it was recorded in Genesis 16

  88. and verse 13.

  89. So she called the name of the Lord

  90. who spoke to her.

  91. You are a God of seeing.

  92. Our God sees.

  93. He takes in

  94. and he acts accordingly.

  95. Verse six says,

  96. they have ears,

  97. but they do not hear.

  98. Exodus chapter two

  99. and verse 24,

  100. we see God hear the groaning

  101. of his people in captivity

  102. in Egypt.

  103. And verse 24 says,

  104. and God remembered his covenant

  105. with Abraham,

  106. with Isaac,

  107. and with Jacob.

  108. A God who cannot hear

  109. is a God that is useless

  110. to pray to.

  111. There's no point in praying

  112. to an inanimate God.

  113. There is a God,

  114. a singular God,

  115. who hears and responds.

  116. Verse six goes on,

  117. they have noses,

  118. but do not smell.

  119. And this is likely a reference

  120. to God's acceptance of sacrifice.

  121. Genesis chapter eight

  122. records for us in verse 21,

  123. when Noah exits the ark,

  124. that he made an altar

  125. and he put on it a sacrifice.

  126. And verse 21 says,

  127. and when the Lord smelled

  128. the pleasing aroma,

  129. the Lord said in his heart,

  130. I will never again curse the ground

  131. because of man,

  132. for the intention of man's heart

  133. is evil from his youth.

  134. Neither will I ever again

  135. strike down every living creature

  136. as I have done.

  137. So we have a God

  138. who accepts the sacrifice of men.

  139. A God who cannot smell,

  140. cannot receive

  141. an acceptable sacrifice.

  142. Verse seven says,

  143. they have hands,

  144. but do not feel.

  145. False gods cannot sympathize

  146. with our weakness

  147. or bring us any comfort at all.

  148. The author of Hebrews writes

  149. in chapter four in verse 15,

  150. for we do not have a high priest

  151. who is unable to sympathize

  152. with our weaknesses,

  153. but one who in every respect

  154. has been tempted as we are,

  155. yet without sin.

  156. These idols have feet,

  157. but do not walk.

  158. False gods have no activity.

  159. But the one true and living God

  160. does all that he pleases.

  161. False gods do nothing.

  162. The prophet Amos records

  163. in chapter four in verse 13,

  164. for behold,

  165. he who forms the mountains

  166. and creates the wind

  167. and declares to man

  168. what is his thought,

  169. who makes the morning darkness

  170. and treads on the heights

  171. of the earth.

  172. Right?

  173. He walks on the heights

  174. of the earth.

  175. The Lord,

  176. the God of hosts,

  177. is his name.

  178. And these idols,

  179. verse seven tells us,

  180. make not a sound

  181. in their throat.

  182. Or,

  183. more literally,

  184. they don't muse.

  185. They have no thoughts.

  186. False gods are lifeless

  187. and useless.

  188. This is a comprehensive,

  189. charge list.

  190. Idols are utterly useless,

  191. and the worship of them

  192. and exercise in futility.

  193. To worship anything

  194. other than the one

  195. true and living God

  196. is wasted worship.

  197. In studying these chapters

  198. against false gods,

  199. my mind was drawn

  200. to the taunting words

  201. of Elijah

  202. to the prophets of Baal

  203. in 1 Kings 18,

  204. in verse 27.

  205. He says,

  206. cry aloud,

  207. for he is a god.

  208. Either he is musing

  209. or he is relieving himself

  210. or he is on a journey

  211. or perhaps he is asleep

  212. and must be awakened.

  213. Utter futility

  214. to worship anything other

  215. than God himself.

  216. The psalmist continues

  217. by telling us in

  218. verse eight,

  219. that those who make them

  220. become like them

  221. and so do all

  222. who trust in them.

  223. We become like

  224. the things

  225. that we worship.

  226. This is striking.

  227. It's incredible.

  228. And this kind of language

  229. is picked up

  230. all throughout the scripture

  231. of people who are not

  232. following God.

  233. Right?

  234. People who are

  235. without their senses.

  236. Right?

  237. They can't see

  238. and they don't hear.

  239. Jeremiah chapter 5,

    Jeremiah 5:21

  240. verse 21 and following.

  241. Hear this,

  242. O foolish and senseless people

  243. who have eyes

  244. but do not see,

  245. who have ears

  246. but hear not.

  247. Do you not fear me?

  248. Declares the Lord.

  249. Do you not tremble

  250. before me?

  251. I place the sand

  252. as the boundary

  253. for the sea.

  254. A perpetual barrier

  255. that it cannot pass.

  256. Though the waves

  257. toss,

  258. they cannot prevail.

  259. Though they roar,

  260. they cannot

  261. pass over it.

  262. And the sea

  263. was always seen

  264. by the Hebrew people

  265. as a great evil.

  266. Right?

  267. God is saying,

  268. I set the limit

  269. of that.

  270. Verse 23,

  271. But this people

  272. has a stubborn

  273. and rebellious heart.

  274. They have turned aside

  275. and gone away.

  276. They do not say

  277. in their hearts,

  278. Let us fear the Lord

  279. our God

  280. who gives the rain

  281. in its season,

  282. the autumn rain

  283. and the spring rain

  284. and keeps for us

  285. the weeks

  286. appointed

  287. for the harvest.

  288. Ezekiel chapter 12

    Ezekiel 12 chapter mention

  289. and verse 2.

  290. Ezekiel writes,

  291. Son of man,

  292. you dwell in the midst

  293. of a rebellious house

  294. who have eyes to see

  295. but see not,

  296. who have ears to hear

  297. but hear not,

  298. for they are a

  299. rebellious house.

  300. This is the end result

  301. of our idolatry.

  302. Not seeing,

  303. not hearing,

  304. being senseless,

  305. being rebels

  306. against God.

  307. And praise be to God

  308. that by His Spirit,

  309. He works faith

  310. in blind

  311. and deaf people.

  312. We once were blind,

  313. but now we see

  314. if we are in Christ.

  315. In Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  316. Jesus responds

  317. to the apostles

  318. asking why He speaks

  319. in parables.

  320. Much of Jesus' language

  321. is so very confusing

  322. on the surface.

  323. Why not go around

  324. teaching more

  325. plainly?

  326. And in verse 11

  327. and following,

  328. He says,

  329. To you it has been given

  330. to know the secrets

  331. of the kingdom of heaven,

  332. but to them

  333. it has not been given.

  334. For to the one who has,

  335. more will be given

  336. and he will have

  337. an abundance,

  338. but from the one

  339. who has not,

  340. even what he has

  341. will be taken away.

  342. This is why I speak

  343. to them in parables

  344. because seeing,

  345. they do not see,

  346. and hearing,

  347. they do not hear,

  348. nor do they understand.

  349. Indeed, in their case,

  350. the prophecy of Isaiah

  351. is fulfilled that says,

  352. and this is Isaiah 6,

    Isaiah 6:9

  353. verses 9 and 10,

  354. You will indeed hear,

  355. but never understand,

  356. and you will indeed see,

  357. but never perceive.

  358. For this people's heart

  359. has grown dull,

  360. and with their ears

  361. they can barely hear,

  362. and their eyes

  363. they have closed.

  364. Lest they should see

  365. with their eyes

  366. and hear with their ears

  367. and understand

  368. with their heart

  369. and turn,

  370. and I would heal them.

  371. But blessed are your eyes

  372. for they see

  373. and your ears

  374. for they hear.

  375. For truly I say to you,

  376. many prophets

  377. and righteous people

  378. long to see

  379. what you see

  380. and did not see it,

  381. and to hear

  382. what you hear

  383. and did not hear it.

  384. And beloved,

  385. if we are in Christ

  386. this morning,

  387. we have seen

  388. and heard.

  389. We have beheld

  390. Christ

  391. himself.

  392. we have been

  393. turned from our

  394. evil ways.

  395. We have been

  396. made less senseless.

  397. We have been

  398. turned to the

  399. Most High God

  400. we now see

  401. and we hear.

  402. And most of us

  403. do not find ourselves

  404. in a position

  405. to bow down

  406. to carved images.

  407. I don't know

  408. that this is

  409. happening much,

  410. although this morning

  411. I was told

  412. that there's a

  413. large night hawk

  414. now on one of the

  415. UNG campuses

  416. that's getting

  417. prayed to

  418. and gifts given to it

  419. and touched for good luck.

  420. I was shocked

  421. to hear such a thing.

  422. It was more

  423. striking

  424. considering Psalm 115

  425. this week.

  426. This is not

  427. typically

  428. the shape

  429. that our

  430. idolatry takes

  431. but the Bible

  432. is relentless

  433. about the

  434. idolatry of our

  435. hearts

  436. because we're

  437. people created

  438. to worship

  439. but to worship

  440. God

  441. alone.

  442. In the Decalogue

  443. Exodus 20

  444. in verse 3

  445. we are commanded

  446. you shall have

  447. no other

  448. gods

  449. before me.

  450. We have to be

  451. very careful

  452. that we don't

  453. see commands

  454. like that

  455. that we don't

  456. read Psalm 115

  457. and think

  458. I don't

  459. bow down

  460. to any

  461. graven images.

  462. There's no

  463. idolatry in my

  464. life that looks

  465. like what's

  466. being explained

  467. here but I

  468. would suggest

  469. to you that

  470. oh on the

  471. contrary.

  472. Charles Spurgeon

  473. once said

  474. and this is the

  475. quote on your

  476. bulletin this

  477. morning if you

  478. happen to have

  479. one,

  480. quote,

  481. if you love

  482. anything better

  483. than God

  484. you are

  485. idolaters.

  486. If there's

  487. anything you

  488. would not give

  489. up for God

  490. it is your

  491. idol.

  492. If there's

  493. anything that

  494. you seek with

  495. greater fervor

  496. than you seek

  497. the glory of

  498. God that is

  499. your idol.

  500. And conversion

  501. means a

  502. turning from

  503. every idol.

  504. Beloved, an

  505. idol is anything

  506. that we place

  507. as the primary

  508. focus of our

  509. lives.

  510. idolaters.

  511. And it's very

  512. possible to do

  513. this with good

  514. things.

  515. We regularly

  516. take good

  517. things and

  518. make them

  519. idols by

  520. loving them

  521. above God

  522. himself.

  523. We do this

  524. with security.

  525. We do this

  526. with all

  527. sorts of

  528. material

  529. possessions.

  530. We do it

  531. with knowledge.

  532. You bunch of

  533. reformed

  534. Baptists.

  535. We do it

  536. with our

  537. political

  538. ideologies,

  539. with control

  540. and comfort.

  541. We do it

  542. with our

  543. health,

  544. pleasure.

  545. We do it

  546. with success

  547. or significance.

  548. I have

  549. idolatrously

  550. worshipped

  551. being a

  552. pastor.

  553. Isn't it

  554. good to be a

  555. pastor?

  556. Of course it's

  557. good to be a

  558. pastor.

  559. It's not good

  560. to worship

  561. being a

  562. pastor.

  563. creator.

  564. We do it

  565. with our

  566. physical

  567. appearance,

  568. our leisure

  569. time,

  570. our ambitions.

  571. We do it

  572. even with our

  573. family and

  574. our church.

  575. We have to

  576. be so very

  577. careful where

  578. we place our

  579. affection.

  580. Even the good

  581. things can get

  582. misaligned and

  583. we can love

  584. those things

  585. more than the

  586. very God who

  587. grants them.

  588. to us.

  589. We've

  590. recently studied

  591. James.

  592. James chapter

    James 4:1

  593. 4,

  594. verse 1,

  595. James writes,

  596. what causes

  597. quarrels and

  598. what causes

  599. fights among

  600. you?

  601. Is it not

  602. this, that

  603. your passions

  604. are at war

  605. within you?

  606. You desire

  607. and do not

  608. have, so you

  609. murder.

  610. You covet and

  611. cannot obtain,

  612. so you fight

  613. and quarrel.

  614. You do not

  615. have because

  616. you do not

  617. ask.

  618. You ask and

  619. do not receive

  620. because you

  621. ask wrongly

  622. to spend

  623. it on

  624. your passions.

  625. James is

  626. suggesting to

  627. us that we

  628. would be a

  629. people at

  630. peace were

  631. we not

  632. idolatrous.

  633. We weren't

  634. worshipping the

  635. creation rather

  636. than the

  637. creator.

  638. And we know

  639. this because he

  640. goes on in

  641. verse 4 of

  642. James 4 to

  643. say,

  644. you adulterous

  645. people,

  646. do you not

  647. know that

  648. friendship with

  649. the world is

  650. enmity with

  651. God?

  652. God.

  653. Therefore,

  654. whoever wishes

  655. to be a

  656. friend of

  657. the world

  658. makes himself

  659. an enemy

  660. of God.

  661. And so,

  662. if we are to

  663. be worshippers

  664. of God,

  665. created in

  666. Christ Jesus

  667. for this,

  668. then we

  669. have to be

  670. very careful

  671. about the

  672. lingering

  673. idolatry

  674. of our

  675. hearts.

  676. We have to

  677. be constantly

  678. assessing those

  679. things in our

  680. life that

  681. draw our

  682. attention.

  683. Has this

  684. become a

  685. matter of

  686. worship for

  687. me or just

  688. a thing that

  689. I do?

  690. Serving my

  691. family,

  692. working my

  693. job,

  694. owning my

  695. home and

  696. my car and

  697. taking the

  698. vacation,

  699. all of those

  700. things,

  701. they ought to

  702. be under

  703. great scrutiny

  704. to be sure

  705. that our

  706. hearts have

  707. not drifted

  708. away from

  709. worship of

  710. our God.

  711. I think a

  712. little helpful

  713. rubric,

  714. although there's

  715. a number of

  716. great rubrics

  717. out there to

  718. kind of run

  719. your heart

  720. through,

  721. as one put

  722. forth by A.W.

  723. Tozer,

  724. and he called

  725. them rules for

  726. self-

  727. discovery,

  728. and what he

  729. meant by that

  730. was how to

  731. recognize where

  732. the inclination

  733. of your heart

  734. was at,

  735. and there's

  736. seven of

  737. them,

  738. so here

  739. they are.

  740. Number one,

  741. what we

  742. want most.

  743. You think

  744. about things

  745. that you want,

  746. what is it

  747. that you

  748. think about?

  749. What is it

  750. that you

  751. desire?

  752. Number two,

  753. what we

  754. think about

  755. most.

  756. Where is

  757. your mind

  758. set throughout

  759. the day?

  760. Number three,

  761. how we

  762. use our

  763. money.

  764. Is our

  765. money being

  766. spent on

  767. things that

  768. are ultimately

  769. about serving

  770. us,

  771. or about

  772. serving the

  773. kingdom of

  774. God?

  775. Are we

  776. storing up

  777. treasure here,

  778. or treasure

  779. above?

  780. Fourth,

  781. what we do

  782. with our

  783. leisure time.

  784. When you've

  785. got some free

  786. time,

  787. how do you

  788. tend to

  789. spend it?

  790. Number five,

  791. the company

  792. we enjoy.

  793. what kind

  794. of people

  795. do you

  796. like to

  797. be around?

  798. Number six,

  799. who and

  800. what we

  801. admire.

  802. And number

  803. seven,

  804. what we

  805. laugh at.

  806. Things can

  807. be helpful

  808. to us to

  809. think about

  810. the inclination

  811. of our

  812. hearts.

  813. Now,

  814. because God

  815. loves us

  816. if we're

  817. his people,

  818. he cares

  819. about exposing

  820. our idolatry.

  821. He wants

  822. us to see

  823. our idolatry

  824. that we

  825. might repent

  826. of it and

  827. return to

  828. him.

  829. And he

  830. does this

  831. in a number

  832. of ways.

  833. He does

  834. it by his

  835. word and

  836. his spirit.

  837. Hebrews 4

  838. and verse 12

  839. says,

  840. the word of

  841. God is

  842. living and

  843. active,

  844. sharper than

  845. any two-edged

  846. sword,

  847. piercing the

  848. division of

  849. soul and

  850. spirit,

  851. of joints

  852. and of

  853. marrow,

  854. and discerning

  855. the thoughts

  856. and intentions

  857. of the

  858. heart.

  859. Oh,

  860. Christian,

  861. that we

  862. would be in

  863. his word

  864. and inviting

  865. him in,

  866. that he

  867. would expose

  868. our hearts

  869. by the light

  870. of his

  871. word.

  872. That we

  873. might repent

  874. and return

  875. and worship

  876. him with

  877. all of our

  878. being.

  879. Secondly,

  880. God exposes

  881. our idolatry

  882. by frustrating

  883. our idols,

  884. by withholding

  885. them,

  886. or by allowing

  887. us to

  888. experience

  889. their futility.

  890. Sometimes he

  891. keeps you from

  892. the thing that

  893. you want to

  894. show how much

  895. you want it,

  896. and sometimes

  897. he gives it

  898. to you so

  899. that you'll

  900. realize what

  901. a waste of

  902. energy it

  903. really was.

  904. In Psalm

    Psalms 106:13

  905. 106,

  906. verse 13

  907. and following,

  908. this is a

  909. reference to

  910. Korah's

  911. rebellion from

  912. Numbers chapter

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  913. 16,

  914. I'll let you

  915. go read

  916. about that.

  917. It records,

  918. God as

  919. God also exposes our idolatry by giving us, number three, an example of true worship.

  920. To look toward.

  921. What does true worship look like?

  922. 1 Kings 18, verse 36.

    1 Kings 18:36

  923. And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said,

  924. O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,

  925. let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant

  926. and that I have done all these things at your word.

  927. God also exposes our idolatry, number four, by administering loving discipline.

  928. Hebrews chapter 12, verse 5 and 6.

    Hebrews 12:5

  929. The author of Hebrews, as an encouragement to a people who are suffering, says,

  930. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

  931. My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.

  932. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son whom he receives.

  933. So because God loves us, he disciplines us, he trains us in righteousness,

  934. because he knows that the very best thing that he can give to us is himself.

  935. It's himself.

  936. So we must be very careful, right?

  937. The psalmist is trying to teach us about the futility of idolatry.

  938. We must not think that we're immune to this,

  939. but see that it still exists within us, even if we're in Christ.

  940. This temptation to worship lesser things than our most high God.

  941. And so what is the remedy for all of this idolatry?

  942. It's proper worship.

  943. It's proper worship.

  944. So we see in the text also, the second main point,

  945. the glory of the one true and living God.

  946. The psalmist tells us, in order for us to properly worship,

  947. we need to trust, to place our faith in this true and living God.

  948. And we get wonderful repetitions here.

  949. Verse 9, 10, and 11.

  950. O Israel, trust in the Lord.

  951. He is their help and their shield.

  952. O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord.

  953. He is their help and their shield.

  954. You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord.

  955. He is their help and their shield.

  956. And I have to believe that when these repetitions exist in the Scripture,

  957. it is because we're supposed to pay attention to them.

  958. We need to be told again and again and again,

  959. trust in the Lord.

  960. He is a help and a shield.

  961. Trust in the Lord.

  962. He is a help and a shield.

  963. Trust in the Lord.

  964. He is a help and a shield.

  965. He is actively and passively pursuing our good.

  966. What a reason to praise our God.

  967. Paul writes in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:28

  968. verse 28 and 29.

  969. And we know that for those who love God,

  970. all things work together for good.

  971. For those who are called according to his purpose.

  972. And here's the good, beloved.

  973. For those whom he foreknew,

  974. he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.

  975. In order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  976. There's no question there about the good that he's bringing about in our lives.

  977. As God is to be trusted,

  978. as he is working actively and passively for our good,

  979. he's making us look more like Jesus.

  980. So that we might bring him more glory.

  981. Right?

  982. Not to us, O Lord.

  983. Not to us.

  984. But to your name give glory.

  985. Then again, repetition.

  986. Verses 12, 13, 14, and 50.

  987. The Lord has remembered us.

  988. He will bless us.

  989. He will bless the house of Israel.

  990. He will bless the house of Aaron.

  991. He will bless those who fear the Lord.

  992. Both the small and the great.

  993. May the Lord give you increase.

  994. You and your children.

  995. May you be blessed by the Lord who made heaven and earth.

  996. Right?

  997. What does he bless us with?

  998. He will bless us with himself.

  999. In Joshua chapter 1, verse 5.

    Joshua 1:5

  1000. God says,

1001. I will not leave you or forsake you.

1002. And he has promised the very same to us who believe in Christ.

1003. The author of Hebrews again picks up chapter 13 and verse 5.

  1004. This quotation from Joshua 1, 5.

  1005. He says,

1006. Keep your life free from the love of money.

1007. And be content with what you have.

1008. Be not idolatrous about possessions.

1009. The author of Hebrews says.

  1010. For he has said,

1011. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

1012. So the remedy to this idolatry,

  1013. this useless,

  1014. this futile energy,

1015. this proper worship of the one true and living God.

1016. He deserves all of our worship.

1017. And we are most like we were created to be

1018. when we give him all of our worship.

1019. So may we be God's people,

1020. having placed saving faith in Jesus Christ,

1021. who recognize the steadfast love and faithfulness of God to us,

1022. so that we will turn from our idolatrous ways

1023. and turn to him in admiration and praise.

  1024. Let's pray together.

  1025. Let's pray together.
