  1. Good morning. If y'all will, go ahead and turn with me to Psalm 130.

  2. !

  3. We've particularly been trying to hide this information, but we haven't been like a complete open book either.

  4. So before you freak out, yes is the answer to that, that we probably are moving, but you've likely got us for another year.

  5. So I'm from Paulding County. All my family lives there. There's like a water's hole section of land.

  6. And many of y'all know my sister Chelsea, my brother-in-law Sam, who were CFC people a few years back.

  7. They just built a house down there. Of course, y'all know the Stricklands, and they're moving to Paulding as well.

  8. And most of Margaret's family is also down there. They all live in Cobb County, which is neighboring to Paulding.

  9. And I say all that to say, ever since Everett was born, I've realized how much I valued time with my grandparents.

  10. I was always a 75-yard walk up a hill to them, and my grandparents are currently still living and want to give us some land if we would want it that we could build on.

  11. And with a lot of our family being really like-minded with us and all of the practical helps that being so close to family would bring.

  12. And honestly, Margaret and I just really wanting Everett to grow up around cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents and even great-grandparents right now.

  13. We'd toy around with the idea of moving for a really, really long time, but it seems like we are heading that way.

  14. So I know a lot of you guys knew that, but I wanted to clue y'all into that.

  15. Y'all, I don't know, I think I've processed a lot of the emotions behind it because we've been thinking about it for so long.

  16. But we go like one direction to the other of being super happy and excited to really sad, to really happy back to really sad.

  17. So I wanted to let everyone know about that.

  18. And I promise for right now not to try to recruit all of the other CFC people with Paulding County roots.

  19. But for right now.

  20. Anyway, I say all that to say, yeah, we'll be missing a few Sundays coming up to check out some churches down there.

  21. And we're okay, but we likely are heading that direction.

  22. So, okay, I'm going to try to not get all emotional.

  23. So let's get into Psalm 130.

  24. I'm sure y'all will hear lots more about the potential of us moving and coming up.

  25. But Psalm 130.

  26. Some of y'all may remember a while back, I think it was just over a month ago,

  27. I did the little homily right before the Lord's Supper on this psalm.

  28. And I really enjoyed doing the little bit of studying for that that I did then.

  29. And I think this is a psalm that we could really think through well as a church.

  30. And so let's get into it.

  31. So I'll read it, and then we'll get into just a little bit of background on it,

  32. and then we'll get into the main part of our study.

  33. So Psalm 130.

  34. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

  35. O Lord, hear my voice.

  36. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy.

  37. If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

  38. But with you there is forgiveness that you may be feared.

  39. I wait for the Lord.

  40. My soul waits.

  41. And in his word I hope.

  42. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning.

  43. More than watchmen for the morning.

  44. O Israel, hope in the Lord.

  45. For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.

  46. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

  47. So this is our psalm this morning.

  48. Psalms are often broken down into different categories just based on their themes or based on the context.

  49. This one's often called a penitential psalm.

  50. And that group of psalms focuses a lot on sorrow over sin,

  51. seeing a need for the Lord's forgiveness,

  52. a desire to turn away from sin,

  53. and to look to the Lord for help.

  54. You could call them psalms of repentance,

  55. as we would likely say more often.

  56. Probably the most well-known psalm of this type is Psalm 51.

  57. And we know that David there was repenting of his sin with Bathsheba.

  58. And some of that familiar wording from that psalm is probably coming to our minds already.

  59. Think about verses 1 through 4 of that psalm where it says,

  60. Have mercy on me, O God.

  61. According to your steadfast love, according to your abundant mercy,

  62. blot out my transgressions.

  63. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

  64. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

  65. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,

  66. so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

  67. You might think of verses 10 through 13 of that psalm.

  68. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

  69. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

  70. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

  71. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

  72. Another common one is Psalm 32, where David says,

  73. I acknowledge my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity.

  74. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,

  75. and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

  76. Those two are probably the most common psalms when we think of psalms that are showing repentance.

  77. But then we get to this one, probably the most common, and the next most common.

  78. And with it, I want to structure it in a couple of ways.

  79. But there's that phrase that's so striking at the beginning,

  80. the out of the depths.

  81. And that's kind of how this whole psalm flows from that.

  82. Spurgeon once summarized this psalm by saying,

  83. Out of the depths we cry, wait, watch, and hope.

  84. And I'd like to borrow a bit of that, and use that for part of our structure this morning.

  85. So we're going to look at three different parts of it.

  86. Firstly, out of the depths we cry.

  87. Secondly, out of the depths we watch and wait.

  88. And then thirdly, out of the depths we hope.

  89. So that's how we're going to structure it this morning.

  90. And be aware that point number one will be the longest.

  91. So when I've gone 20 minutes on that one, don't be too worried.

  92. So let's start with, Out of the depths we cry.

  93. We're going to look at the first four verses with this one.

  94. So our psalm begins with, Out of the depths we cry.

  95. When we hear that word depths, we might be thinking of at least a couple of different things.

  96. We might think of just being in a really hard situation, a circumstance that's really pressing on us.

  97. Or we might think instead of really battling sin struggles in ourself.

  98. In this psalm, though, I think the phrase is made pretty clear, even with just looking at our English translation,

  99. of what type of depths are being talked about here.

  100. Why I say that is look in verse three.

  101. We begin seeing talks of iniquities and forgiveness.

  102. As we see our psalmist begin to state that if the Lord truly marked all our iniquities and counted those against us,

  103. that no one could stand.

  104. Given that context, I think that's a pretty clear indicator that in verse one,

  105. the psalmist is not just talking about a hard, non-moral situation,

  106. but instead the psalmist is talking about really struggling against sin, battling against sin.

  107. And in this battle of sin, I want us to notice something about the urgency of how the psalmist is speaking.

  108. We have the wording, out of the depths, but getting a little bit past that,

  109. you might see something even more intense, maybe.

  110. So we have the depths, the deep pit of sorrow, shame, guilt, maybe even a little bit of just self-hatred.

  111. But then notice, out of the depths we cry.

  112. Not an out of the depths I come to you, or out of the depths I reach out to you, Lord,

  113. or out of the depths I call to you.

  114. Now, while the psalmist is currently certainly doing those things,

  115. coming to the Lord, reaching out to the Lord, calling on his name,

  116. those are not the word that he chose to use to describe what he's doing.

  117. Instead, he uses the word cry.

  118. He's not in an emotional state where he's thinking,

  119. Oh, Lord, I'm just struggling with sin again.

  120. He's instead really hit with the weight of his sin,

  121. and therefore he cries out to the Lord.

  122. And look at verse 2, where it says,

  123. Oh, Lord, hear my voice.

  124. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy.

  125. We see the psalmist calling the name of the Lord again.

  126. And note what he says.

  127. He doesn't say, Lord, answer my prayer, or give me what I want.

  128. Give me exactly what I ask.

  129. But instead, he asks the Lord to hear him.

  130. Ask the Lord to hear his voice, to be attentive to his pleas for mercy.

  131. Let's make me think a little bit about kids

  132. and how kids can often struggle with thinking that they know better than their parents

  133. what would be best for them.

  134. We even already see this with Everett when he's just about to turn one.

  135. He always wants to eat bread, and that's not a good situation.

  136. We might think of a kid that is wanting to hold something or touch something

  137. that their parent knows is dangerous,

  138. or a kid wanting to stay up past their bedtime

  139. when their parent knows that that would totally wreck them for the next day.

  140. And I bring that up to say the psalmist is not like this at all.

  141. Well, he's recognizing that our Lord knows what he needs much more than he himself.

  142. When we're seeing him not asking the Lord to answer his prayer,

  143. but just to hear him,

  144. that yes, he will argue his case before the Lord,

  145. pour out his heart before the Lord,

  146. but ultimately what he's asking here is he wants the Lord to hear him.

  147. And then he will entrust his soul to the Lord, our faithful creator,

  148. for what the Lord decides to do in the situation.

  149. When we're in repentance, do we have that same level of humility?

  150. Do we have that same level of just pouring out our hearts to God,

  151. trusting him to do what would be best for us?

  152. Or, I think something I can often struggle with,

  153. when we're coming in repentance,

  154. do we already seem to know all of the answers?

  155. Do we put ourselves in the place of God and know,

  156. this is exactly what I should do to fix this?

  157. Do we seem to have the solutions to all our problems,

  158. all worked out with our solution, right?

  159. Do we even ask the Lord at times to give us exactly what we want in prayer,

  160. which turns our prayers into,

  161. let our will be done, not yours, Lord.

  162. Spurgeon once made the following statement when reflecting about this verse.

  163. If the Lord will hear us,

  164. we will leave it to his superior wisdom

  165. to decide whether he will answer us or not.

  166. It is better for our prayer to be heard than answered.

  167. If the Lord were to make an absolute promise

  168. to answer all our requests,

  169. it might be rather a curse than a blessing,

  170. for it would be casting the responsibility upon ourselves,

  171. and we should be placed in a very anxious position.

  172. But now the Lord hears our desires,

  173. and that is enough.

  174. We only wish him to grant them

  175. in his infinite wisdom.

  176. He sees that it would be good for our good and for his glory.

  177. So we call to the Lord,

  178. and let's really be thankful

  179. that he doesn't grant everything that we ask,

  180. because his wisdom is so much higher than ours.

  181. Our growth, our salvation, our sanctification,

  182. even whether our prayers are answered,

  183. are ultimately orchestrated by the Lord,

  184. who in his infinite wisdom

  185. always has his glory and our good in mind.

  186. So the psalmist is called to the Lord,

  187. pleading that the Lord would hear his cry,

  188. would be attentive to his pleas for mercy.

  189. Now let's get down into verse 3,

  190. and I think verse 3 is the verse

  191. that brings so many people to the psalm.

  192. And I think many of us really like to use it

  193. to talk about the heart of the gospel.

  194. And so let's reread it again now.

  195. Verse 3,

  196. If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

  197. O Lord, who could stand?

  198. I think this verse is so framing

  199. in the way we should think through this whole psalm.

  200. The psalmist initially is in such deep sorrow over sin.

  201. He's seeing the depths of himself.

  202. He sees his sin very clearly,

  203. and he sees a holy God,

  204. and he realizes the depth of his need.

  205. And notice also how often he's addressing the Lord.

  206. You might just look through the psalm

  207. and so quickly see how often he's just calling the Lord,

  208. the reverence that he's showing

  209. in his position compared to that of the Lord.

  210. And then in verse 3,

  211. I think it drives that idea home

  212. that if the Lord should mark iniquities,

  213. who could stand?

  214. In other words,

  215. if our sin was truly counted against us,

  216. would there be anyone left?

  217. Would anyone pass the test?

  218. He's not only feeling the need to cry out in brokenness,

  219. but in this verse,

  220. he's truly confessing

  221. that he could not stand before God.

  222. In fact, that no one could.

  223. I think we would all give the obvious answer

  224. to this rhetorical question.

  225. No one,

  226. no one could stand before the Lord.

  227. Other scripture that's probably already popping into your mind

  228. makes this so clear.

  229. Think about Romans 3

  230. that's actually quoting a couple different psalms.

  231. None is righteous,

  232. no, not one.

  233. No one understands,

  234. no one seeks for God.

  235. All have turned aside.

  236. Together they have become worthless.

  237. No one does good,

  238. not even one.

  239. None of us could stand

  240. if our sin were truly counted against us.

  241. I would wager to say

  242. that none of us could stand

  243. if we just looked at our lives

  244. over this past morning.

  245. From the people that get up crazy early around 4

  246. to the people that are rolling out of bed around 9.45.

  247. I bet all of us,

  248. no matter if we've had just a couple hours of being awake

  249. or if we've had six hours of being awake,

  250. I would wager to say

  251. that all of us could pinpoint

  252. some sort of sin

  253. that we've struggled with today.

  254. Whether it be an action

  255. or whether it just be something in our minds,

  256. something in our hearts,

  257. none of us could stand.

  258. But then we see verse 4.

  259. And I think the sweetness of verse 4

  260. really drives the rest of the psalm.

  261. Let's read 3 and 4 again together

  262. so we can remember that flow.

  263. If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

  264. O Lord, who could stand?

  265. But with you there is forgiveness

  266. that you may be feared.

  267. A while back when I did this psalm

  268. at the beginning of the Lord's Supper,

  269. I compared this to the other but-gods in Scripture

  270. of us maybe even thinking Ephesians 2,

  271. right, of but God being rich in mercy

  272. because of the great love of which he loved us, right?

  273. That kind of thing of Paul explaining the gospel

  274. after explaining our sin.

  275. And the psalmist is doing

  276. a very, very similar thing.

  277. He's cried out to the Lord

  278. with a deep pit of sorrow over sin.

  279. He's pleading his cry for mercy.

  280. He has acknowledged that no one can stand

  281. in light of a holy God based on our sin.

  282. But then he makes this such wonderful,

  283. freeing statement

  284. about the character of our Lord.

  285. But with you there is forgiveness

  286. that you may be feared.

  287. Elsewhere in another psalm,

  288. Psalm 86, verse 5,

    Psalms 86:5

  289. we read,

  290. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,

  291. abounding in steadfast love

  292. to all who call upon you.

  293. We know the psalmist had a really clear picture

  294. that the Lord was a very forgiving God

  295. to a very undeserving people.

  296. This might make us think back to Old Testament text

  297. where the Lord proclaims his character.

  298. Think about after Moses had broken the tablets

  299. and the Lord was asking him to make new ones.

  300. Exodus 34, verses 6 and 7 say,

    Exodus 34:6

  301. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed,

  302. The Lord, the Lord,

  303. a God merciful and gracious,

  304. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love

  305. and faithfulness,

  306. keeping steadfast love for thousands,

  307. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  308. but who will by no means clear the guilty,

  309. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children

  310. and the children's children

  311. to the third and the fourth generation.

  312. And I bring all that up

  313. to say that there was some strong knowledge

  314. and awareness,

  315. even at this time,

  316. of the great mercy of our God.

  317. While the how, the why of Christ

  318. was not yet fully understood,

  319. fully realized to these people in this day,

  320. there was some good understanding

  321. that the Lord was a very forgiving God,

  322. merciful, gracious, slow to anger,

  323. abounding in steadfast love,

  324. but also a God who will by no means clear the guilty.

  325. And so with that reality,

  326. the psalmist is pleading,

  327. knowing that with the Lord,

  328. he has been given such mercy

  329. and how thankful he is,

  330. how humble he is

  331. as acknowledging that

  332. he's not deserving of this mercy at all,

  333. that truly no one deserves it,

  334. but we in the psalmist here

  335. has been graciously given it by the Lord.

  336. Spurgeon, again,

  337. I'm going to quote Spurgeon a lot,

  338. once said of this verse,

  339. free, full, sovereign pardon

  340. is in the hand of the great king.

  341. It is his prerogative to forgive

  342. and he delights to exercise it.

  343. Because his nature is mercy

  344. and because he has provided a sacrifice for sin,

  345. therefore forgiveness is with him

  346. and for all that come to him

  347. confessing their sins.

  348. All those who come to the Lord in faith

  349. may have this forgiveness.

  350. We as modern day Christians

  351. may have an even greater understanding

  352. that while we can look back

  353. to the person and work of Christ,

  354. the psalmist in this day looked forward

  355. and trusted in the forgiving character

  356. of the Lord.

  357. Now let's consider that blessing

  358. of that clarity

  359. of that hope we have.

  360. That not based on any goodness of ourselves,

  361. we have been given such grace

  362. from the Lord.

  363. The clarity of it,

  364. think of what we have in the New Testament

  365. explaining it now.

  366. Think of Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6–11

  367. verses 6 through 11.

  368. Y'all turn with me there.

  369. Romans 5.

  370. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6–11

  371. verses 6 through 11,

  372. I think makes this

  373. so clear

  374. and so precious to us.

  375. Picking up in verse 6,

  376. it says,

  377. For while we were still weak,

  378. at the right time,

  379. Christ died for the ungodly.

  380. For one will scarcely die

  381. for a righteous person,

  382. though perhaps for a good person,

  383. one would dare even to die.

  384. But God chose his love for us

  385. in that while we were still sinners,

  386. Christ died for us.

  387. Since therefore we have now been justified

  388. by his blood,

  389. much more shall we be saved by him

  390. from the wrath of God.

  391. For while we were enemies,

  392. we were reconciled to God

  393. by the death of his son.

  394. Much more now that we are reconciled,

  395. shall we be saved by his life.

  396. More than that,

  397. we also rejoice in God

  398. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  399. through whom we have now

  400. received reconciliation.

  401. And our hope is not just there.

  402. Think of Galatians 2.20.

  403. I have been crucified with Christ.

  404. It is no longer I who live,

  405. but Christ who lives in me.

  406. And the life I now live,

  407. I live in the flesh,

  408. or excuse me,

  409. the life I now live in the flesh,

  410. I live by faith in the Son of God

  411. who loved me

  412. and gave himself for me.

  413. Or think about probably

  414. the most well-known verse.

  415. For God so loved the world

  416. that he gave his only Son,

  417. that whoever believes in him

  418. should not perish,

  419. but have eternal life.

  420. Let's always remember

  421. that hope that we have

  422. through the forgiveness

  423. we have in the Lord.

  424. Okay.

  425. Y'all might have noticed

  426. we've been talking about

  427. verse 4 for a while,

  428. but we haven't talked about

  429. the back end of it.

  430. Reading verse 4 one more time.

  431. But with you there is forgiveness

  432. that you may be feared.

  433. It might seem interesting to us

  434. the phrasing of it.

  435. To our mind,

  436. we might think it would be

  437. more likely to say

  438. something different.

  439. Like,

  440. with you there is forgiveness

  441. that you might be loved.

  442. Or with you there is forgiveness

  443. that your grace might be shown.

  444. Or maybe even,

  445. with you there is forgiveness

  446. that you may be glorified.

  447. Or,

  448. even someone treating salvation

  449. flippantly.

  450. With you there is forgiveness

  451. so there is no longer

  452. a need to put away sin.

  453. We know Paul shot that down

  454. in Romans.

  455. But,

  456. instead,

  457. we have something different.

  458. We have,

  459. with you there is forgiveness

  460. that you may be feared.

  461. This fear,

  462. of course,

  463. does denote a reverence

  464. and awe,

  465. a why me

  466. kind of idea

  467. that we should be amazed

  468. that the Lord has shown us

  469. such great mercy

  470. when he couldn't have

  471. just totally wiped us out.

  472. Right?

  473. That would be the

  474. just thing to do.

  475. And that way we fear him.

  476. I think of a hymn that,

  477. maybe we should start back

  478. doing some more here

  479. that is,

  480. How Sweet and Awful.

  481. How sweet and awful

  482. is the place

  483. with Christ

  484. within the doors

  485. while everlasting love

  486. displays the choicest

  487. of our stores.

  488. While all our hearts

  489. and all our songs

  490. join to admire the feast,

  491. each of us cry

  492. with thankful tongues,

  493. Lord,

  494. why was I

  495. a guest?

  496. Why was I made

  497. to hear thy voice

  498. and enter

  499. while there's room

  500. while thousands

  501. make a wretched choice

  502. and rather starve

  503. than come?

  504. It was the same love

  505. that spread the feast

  506. that sweetly drew us in,

  507. else we had still

  508. refused to taste

  509. and perished in our sin.

  510. Pity the nations,

  511. O our God,

  512. constrain the earth to come,

  513. send thy victorious word

  514. abroad,

  515. and bring the strangers home.

  516. We long to see

  517. thy churches full,

  518. that all the chosen race

  519. may with one voice

  520. and heart and soul

  521. sing thy redeeming grace.

  522. So we've been giving

  523. such great forgiveness

  524. in Christ

  525. while we did not

  526. deserve it one bit.

  527. Such undeserved forgiveness.

  528. Why were we chosen?

  529. While others choose

  530. to reject that same invitation.

  531. While we are just as

  532. undeserving as they.

  533. And so the psalmist

  534. very much understands

  535. that reality.

  536. out of the depths

  537. crying out,

  538. acknowledging his sin,

  539. and that he's so undeserving

  540. of forgiveness.

  541. Okay.

  542. So I've probably been

  543. about 20 minutes

  544. on that point.

  545. But I promise

  546. the others will be

  547. much, much shorter.

  548. So let's get down

  549. past verse 4

  550. into second point.

  551. Out of the depths

  552. we watch

  553. and wait.

  554. Out of the depths

  555. we watch

  556. and wait.

  557. Let's read verses 5 and 6

  558. again.

  559. And you'll see

  560. the waiting,

  561. watching,

  562. and hoping

  563. all of those words

  564. all throughout here.

  565. I wait for the Lord.

  566. My soul waits.

  567. And in his word

  568. I hope.

  569. My soul waits

  570. for the Lord

  571. more than watchmen

  572. for the morning.

  573. More than watchmen

  574. for the morning.

  575. So this waiting

  576. we might ask

  577. what is this waiting

  578. really for?

  579. This waiting here

  580. seems to be

  581. twofold.

  582. And I think

  583. you all will see

  584. why I believe that.

  585. Firstly

  586. at the beginning

  587. of the psalm

  588. we noted

  589. just the state

  590. of being

  591. down in the depths.

  592. My family

  593. growing up

  594. often said

  595. I'm just feeling

  596. down in the dump.

  597. You could use

  598. that similar

  599. phrasing.

  600. Having a really,

  601. really strong

  602. sorrow

  603. over sin.

  604. This waiting

  605. on the Lord

  606. seems to be tied

  607. to redemption

  608. both now

  609. and full

  610. and final

  611. redemption

  612. in the future.

  613. And the reason

  614. I'm saying

  615. this is

  616. verses 7

  617. and 8.

  618. So let's get

  619. into those

  620. a little bit

  621. because I think

  622. they help us

  623. understand

  624. verses 5

  625. and 6.

  626. So let's read

  627. those.

  628. Oh Israel

  629. hope in the

  630. Lord for

  631. with the

  632. Lord there

  633. is steadfast

  634. love and

  635. with him

  636. is plentiful

  637. redemption and

  638. he will

  639. redeem Israel

  640. from all

  641. his iniquities.

  642. So in

  643. verse 7

  644. we see a

  645. call to

  646. Israel,

  647. a call to

  648. the people

  649. of God

  650. to hope

  651. in the

  652. Lord.

  653. Why hope

  654. in the

  655. Lord?

  656. Because with

  657. him there

  658. is steadfast

  659. love.

  660. We can have

  661. confidence that

  662. his love

  663. is constantly

  664. on us

  665. and plentiful

  666. redemption.

  667. And then in

  668. verse 8

  669. he will

  670. not he may

  671. but he will

  672. redeem Israel

  673. from all

  674. his iniquities.

  675. Now I'm

  676. bringing up

  677. these verses

  678. because I

  679. think they

  680. show exactly

  681. what the

  682. psalmist is

  683. waiting on.

  684. Both a

  685. mindset of

  686. having hope

  687. in the

  688. Lord.

  689. He wants

  690. his heart

  691. to catch

  692. up with

  693. the reality

  694. of what

  695. his mind

  696. understands

  697. of there's

  698. plentiful

  699. redemption

  700. in the

  701. Lord.

  702. He wants

  703. to feel

  704. that but

  705. also

  706. notice that

  707. more full

  708. and final

  709. redemption

  710. at the

  711. end.

  712. He will

  713. redeem

  714. Israel.

  715. Many of

  716. you guys

  717. I know

  718. have picked

  719. up one

  720. of those

  721. many copies

  722. of Gentle

  723. !

  724. and Lowly

  725. that are

  726. in the

  727. hallway.

  728. And in

  729. that book

  730. he makes

  731. some

  732. really

  733. wonderful

  734. observations

  735. about the

  736. love that

  737. the Lord

  738. has for

  739. us.

  740. And in

  741. talking about

  742. what our

  743. response should

  744. be when

  745. we're struggling

  746. with sin

  747. whether that's

  748. a like

  749. battling

  750. our sin

  751. in a

  752. worldly

  753. way of

  754. just getting

  755. so down

  756. and just

  757. fighting

  758. ourselves

  759. or running

  760. to the

  761. Lord with

  762. godly grief

  763. over our

  764. sin instead

  765. of that

  766. wallowing

  767. in it.

  768. Dane

  769. Ortlund

  770. says,

  771. speaking of

  772. our Lord,

  773. he does

  774. not get

  775. flustered

  776. and frustrated

  777. when we

  778. come to

  779. him for

  780. fresh

  781. forgiveness,

  782. for renewed

  783. pardon

  784. with distress

  785. and need

  786. and emptiness.

  787. That's the

  788. whole point.

  789. It's what

  790. he came

  791. to heal.

  792. He went

  793. down into

  794. the horror

  795. of death

  796. and plunged

  797. out through

  798. the other

  799. side in

  800. order to

  801. provide a

  802. limitless

  803. supply of

  804. mercy and

  805. grace to

  806. his people.

  807. This seems

  808. to be so

  809. similar to

  810. what the

  811. psalmist is

  812. exhorting

  813. here.

  814. Go to

  815. the Lord,

  816. right?

  817. Know your

  818. redemption.

  819. Know the

  820. steadfast love

  821. that the

  822. Lord has

  823. for you.

  824. Go to

  825. the Lord

  826. to know

  827. your

  828. forgiveness

  829. when struggling

  830. with sin.

  831. I think

  832. that's part

  833. of what

  834. is being

  835. weighted on

  836. in verse

  837. five.

  838. That sense

  839. of redemption,

  840. that sense

  841. of steadfast

  842. love.

  843. But that

  844. twofold part

  845. again,

  846. that and

  847. he will

  848. redeem

  849. Israel

  850. from all

  851. his

  852. iniquities,

  853. that sure

  854. complete and

  855. final sound

  856. of that

  857. verse,

  858. redeeming

  859. Israel,

  860. redeeming

  861. God's

  862. people from

  863. all their

  864. iniquities,

  865. that's a

  866. different kind

  867. of longing

  868. for the

  869. day when

  870. we will

  871. be fully

  872. set free

  873. from sin

  874. and fully

  875. sanctified.

  876. That's a

  877. hope for

  878. eternity.

  879. I believe

  880. so many of

  881. us can get

  882. frustrated with

  883. ourselves about

  884. our sin,

  885. feeling like

  886. we keep doing

  887. the same

  888. thing over

  889. and over

  890. again and

  891. long for

  892. eternity.

  893. We long for

  894. that day when

  895. we'll be

  896. finally and

  897. fully freed

  898. from sin

  899. when all

  900. things will

  901. be made

  902. new.

  903. And that

  904. longing for

  905. eternity I

  906. think is

  907. exactly what

  908. verse 8 is

  909. talking about.

  910. So we'll get

  911. into verse 7

  912. and 8 a bit

  913. more in a

  914. sec, but

  915. think about

  916. these waiting

  917. and watching

  918. words.

  919. It's not a

  920. sit around and

  921. do nothing

  922. kind of

  923. waiting.

  924. It's not a

  925. standing in

  926. line at

  927. Walmart getting

  928. bored kind

  929. of waiting.

  930. It's a much

  931. more intense

  932. kind of waiting.

  933. Notice the

  934. wording.

  935. I wait for

  936. the Lord

  937. and even

  938. more emphasis

  939. my soul

  940. waits.

  941. In fact my

  942. soul waits for

  943. the Lord more

  944. than watchmen

  945. for the morning

  946. more than

  947. watchmen for

  948. the morning.

  949. We get the

  950. picture of

  951. guards around

  952. the city

  953. watching for

  954. attackers and

  955. wearying

  956. themselves by

  957. staying up

  958. waiting for

  959. the morning.

  960. Or you might

  961. think of

  962. Matthew

  963. Carnegie

  964. guarding his

  965. campers from

  966. a bear.

  967. Mostly kidding.

  968. But you

  969. might think of

  970. something so

  971. much more

  972. serious as

  973. well.

  974. Of someone

  975. staying awake

  976. through the

  977. night caring

  978. for a sick

  979. loved one.

  980. Making sure

  981. they are okay

  982. or even

  983. waiting at a

  984. time when you

  985. believe someone

  986. will pass.

  987. Thinking about

  988. just being

  989. outside overnight

  990. and maybe

  991. you're hunting

  992. but whatever

  993. it is you

  994. get that

  995. glimpse of

  996. sun in the

  997. morning.

  998. You know that

  999. you've got to

  1000. just make it

  1001. through a

  1002. little bit

  1003. more cold

  1004. and there

  1005. will be

  1006. these rays

  1007. hitting you

  1008. and it's

  1009. wonderful.

  1010. Do we

  1011. wait?

  1012. Do we

  1013. watch in

  1014. this way?

  1015. Do we

  1016. long to

  1017. know the

  1018. assurance of

  1019. our salvation

  1020. or long

  1021. for eternity,

  1022. long for the

  1023. day of our

  1024. Lord in this

  1025. way?

  1026. Do we

  1027. want to

  1028. know full

  1029. freedom from

  1030. sin this

  1031. much?

  1032. Do we

  1033. want to

  1034. meet the

  1035. one who

  1036. saved us

  1037. and who

  1038. kept us

  1039. by his

  1040. grace this

  1041. much?

  1042. What do

  1043. we

  1044. long for?

  1045. Where

  1046. are our

  1047. minds at

  1048. when we

  1049. daydream?

  1050. Do we

  1051. long to

  1052. be free

  1053. from sin?

  1054. Do we

  1055. long for

  1056. eternity?

  1057. Do we

  1058. wait for

  1059. the Lord

  1060. more than

  1061. watchmen for

  1062. the morning?

  1063. Okay, let's

  1064. get to our

  1065. last point.

  1066. Number three,

  1067. out of the

  1068. depths we

  1069. hope.

  1070. Out of the

  1071. depths we

  1072. hope.

  1073. We've spoken

  1074. about our

  1075. hope all

  1076. throughout the

  1077. sermon because

  1078. I believe it

  1079. was necessary

  1080. to do so in

  1081. order to

  1082. properly

  1083. understand some

  1084. of the other

  1085. verses.

  1086. In fact,

  1087. all of our

  1088. crying,

  1089. waiting,

  1090. watching,

  1091. and hoping

  1092. are all

  1093. tied so

  1094. closely

  1095. together.

  1096. Isaac

  1097. Ambrose once

  1098. said this on

  1099. your bulletin,

  1100. that hope is a

  1101. faculty of the

  1102. soul that

  1103. looks out for

  1104. mercy and

  1105. waits for the

  1106. same.

  1107. Let's notice a

  1108. couple things

  1109. about that

  1110. hope.

  1111. Firstly, in the

  1112. middle of our

  1113. waiting and

  1114. watching verses,

  1115. we see our

  1116. hope in the

  1117. waiting and

  1118. watching stages.

  1119. It's the

  1120. Lord's word.

  1121. I wait for

  1122. the Lord,

  1123. my soul

  1124. waits,

  1125. and in

  1126. his word

  1127. I hope.

  1128. Think about

  1129. the hope

  1130. that the

  1131. psalmist

  1132. had that

  1133. we see in

  1134. 7 and 8

  1135. that is

  1136. coming from

  1137. the Lord's

  1138. word,

  1139. not fully

  1140. knowing the

  1141. redemption of

  1142. the Lord,

  1143. but knowing

  1144. the Lord

  1145. had a plan

  1146. for his

  1147. people to

  1148. show them

  1149. such great

  1150. mercy,

  1151. that they

  1152. would be

  1153. his people

  1154. and he

  1155. would be

  1156. their God.

  1157. And now

  1158. we having

  1159. a full

  1160. revelation

  1161. have so much

  1162. reason to

  1163. hope.

  1164. even more

  1165. understanding

  1166. that they

  1167. had.

  1168. That while

  1169. we see the

  1170. great weight

  1171. of our

  1172. sin,

  1173. when we're

  1174. in the

  1175. depths,

  1176. calling to

  1177. the Lord,

  1178. we can be

  1179. confident,

  1180. think about

  1181. Philippians 1

    Philippians 1:6

  1182. verse 6,

  1183. that I am

  1184. sure of

  1185. this,

  1186. that he

  1187. who began

  1188. a good

  1189. work in

  1190. you will

  1191. bring it

  1192. to

  1193. completion

  1194. at the

  1195. day of

  1196. Jesus

  1197. Christ.

  1198. We can

  1199. be so

  1200. confident

  1201. that the

  1202. Lord who

  1203. began the

  1204. work in

  1205. us will

  1206. finish

  1207. the work

  1208. in us.

  1209. And then

  1210. think about,

  1211. this will be

  1212. another place

  1213. for y'all to

  1214. turn.

  1215. Y'all go

  1216. ahead and

  1217. turn with

  1218. me to

  1219. John 6.

  1220. John 6.

  1221. This is

  1222. another

  1223. passage that

  1224. is talked

  1225. about really

  1226. well in

  1227. Gentle and

  1228. Lowly.

  1229. Let's look

  1230. at a few

  1231. verses here,

  1232. verse 35

  1233. through 40.

  1234. Jesus said

  1235. to them,

  1236. I am the

  1237. bread of

  1238. life.

  1239. Whoever

  1240. comes to

  1241. me shall

  1242. not hunger,

  1243. and whoever

  1244. believes in

  1245. me shall

  1246. never thirst.

  1247. But I

  1248. said to

  1249. you,

  1250. excuse me,

  1251. but I

  1252. said to

  1253. you that

  1254. you have

  1255. seen me,

  1256. and yet

  1257. you do

  1258. not believe.

  1259. All that

  1260. the Father

  1261. gives me

  1262. will come

  1263. to me,

  1264. and whoever

  1265. comes to

  1266. me I

  1267. will never

  1268. cast out.

  1269. For I

  1270. have come

  1271. down from

  1272. heaven not

  1273. to do

  1274. my own

  1275. will,

  1276. but the

  1277. will of

  1278. him who

  1279. sent

  1280. me.

  1281. All this

  1282. is the

  1283. will of

  1284. him who

  1285. sent

  1286. me,

  1287. that I

  1288. should

  1289. lose

  1290. nothing of

  1291. all that

  1292. he has

  1293. given

  1294. me,

  1295. but raise

  1296. it up

  1297. on the

  1298. last

  1299. day.

  1300. For

  1301. this is

  1302. the

  1303. will of

  1304. my

  1305. Father,

  1306. that

  1307. everyone

  1308. who

  1309. looks on

  1310. the

  1311. Son

  1312. and

  1313. believes

  1314. in

  1315. him

  1316. should

  1317. have

  1318. eternal

  1319. life,

  1320. and I

  1321. will

  1322. raise

  1323. him

  1324. up

  1325. on

  1326. the

  1327. last

  1328. day.

  1329. Sometimes

  1330. passages

  1331. like this

  1332. seem too

  1333. good to

  1334. be true.

  1335. I

  1336. think we

  1337. as

  1338. believers

  1339. often slip

  1340. into a

  1341. workspace

  1342. mindset

  1343. again,

  1344. that we

  1345. treat our

  1346. salvation

  1347. as coming

  1348. from

  1349. grace,

  1350. but we

  1351. treat our

  1352. sanctification

  1353. as if

  1354. it's

  1355. all a

  1356. work

  1357. of

  1358. us.

  1359. Maybe

  1360. we

  1361. believe

  1362. that

  1363. the

  1364. Lord

  1365. has

  1366. forgiven

  1367. all

  1368. of

  1369. our

  1370. past

  1371. sins

  1372. before

  1373. we

  1374. became

  1375. a

  1376. believer,

  1377. but we

  1378. struggle

  1379. to

  1380. believe

  1381. that

  1382. the

  1383. Lord

  1384. is

  1385. also

  1386. forgiving

  1387. our

  1388. current

  1389. sin

  1390. struggles.

  1391. We

  1392. believe

  1393. that

  1394. he

  1395. must

  1396. get

  1397. so

  1398. frustrated

  1399. with

  1400. us

  1401. when

  1402. we

  1403. still

  1404. sin

  1405. after

  1406. that.

  1407. Now,

  1408. while

  1409. we

  1410. should

  1411. endeavor

  1412. to

  1413. always

  1414. live

  1415. lives

  1416. worthy

  1417. of the

  1418. calling

  1419. to which

  1420. we've

  1421. been

  1422. called,

  1423. we

  1424. must

  1425. constantly

  1426. remember

  1427. that

  1428. the

  1429. whole

  1430. point

  1431. of

  1432. the

  1433. gospel

  1434. is

  1435. that

  1436. we

  1437. are

  1438. not

  1439. worthy

  1440. that

  1441. the

  1442. Lord

  1443. shows

  1444. his

  1445. great

  1446. love

  1447. for

  1448. us

  1449. and

  1450. that

  1451. while

  1452. we

  1453. were

  1454. yet

  1455. sinners

  1456. he

  1457. died

  1458. for

  1459. us.

  1460. And

  1461. according

  1462. to

  1463. this

  1464. passage

  1465. we

  1466. just

  1467. read,

  1468. our

  1469. Lord

  1470. will

  1471. not

  1472. cast

  1473. out

  1474. any

  1475. that

  1476. the

  1477. Father

  1478. gives

  1479. him

  1480. and

  1481. all

  1482. that

  1483. the

  1484. Father

  1485. gives

  1486. him

  1487. will

  1488. come

  1489. to

  1490. him.

  1491. What

  1492. great

  1493. assurance

  1494. we

  1495. can

  1496. have

  1497. that

  1498. the

  1499. Lord

  1500. will

  1501. continue

  1502. the

  1503. work

  1504. that

  1505. he

  1506. started

  1507. in

  1508. us.

  1509. He

  1510. will

  1511. bring

  1512. it

  1513. to

  1514. completion

  1515. at

  1516. his

  1517. day.

  1518. But

  1519. in

  1520. verse

  1521. 8

  1522. we

  1523. also

  1524. have

  1525. that

  1526. and

  1527. back

  1528. in

  1529. Psalm

    Psalms 130:8

  1530. 130

  1531. verse

  1532. 8

  1533. we

  1534. also

  1535. have

  1536. that

  1537. such

  1538. great

  1539. hope

  1540. for

  1541. eternity

  1542. that

  1543. one

  1544. great

  1545. day

  1546. in

  1547. the

  1548. future

  1549. all

  1550. suffering

  1551. is

  1552. gone

  1553. all

  1554. sin

  1555. is

  1556. gone

  1557. and

  1558. we

  1559. will

  1560. live

  1561. with

  1562. Christ

  1563. forever.

  1564. Think

  1565. about

  1566. the

  1567. first

  1568. few

  1569. verses

  1570. of

  1571. Revelation

  1572. 21

  1573. then

  1574. I

  1575. saw

  1576. a

  1577. new

  1578. heaven

  1579. and

  1580. a

  1581. new

  1582. earth

  1583. for

  1584. the

  1585. first

  1586. heaven

  1587. and

  1588. the

  1589. first

  1590. earth

  1591. had

  1592. passed

  1593. away

  1594. and

  1595. the

  1596. sea

  1597. was

  1598. no

  1599. more

  1600. and

  1601. I

  1602. saw

  1603. the

  1604. holy

  1605. city

  1606. new

  1607. Jerusalem

  1608. coming

  1609. down

  1610. out

  1611. of

  1612. heaven

  1613. from

  1614. God

  1615. prepared

  1616. as

  1617. a

  1618. bride

  1619. adorned

  1620. for

  1621. her

  1622. husband

  1623. and

  1624. I

  1625. heard

  1626. a

  1627. loud

  1628. voice

  1629. from

  1630. the

  1631. throne

  1632. saying

  1633. behold

  1634. the

  1635. dwelling

  1636. place

  1637. of

  1638. God

  1639. is

  1640. with

  1641. man

  1642. he

  1643. will

  1644. dwell

  1645. with

  1646. them

  1647. and

  1648. they

  1649. will

  1650. be

  1651. his

  1652. people

  1653. and

  1654. God

  1655. himself

  1656. will

  1657. be

  1658. with

  1659. them

  1660. as

  1661. their

  1662. God

  1663. he

  1664. will

  1665. wipe

  1666. away

  1667. every

  1668. tear

  1669. from

  1670. their

  1671. eyes

  1672. and

  1673. death

  1674. shall

  1675. be

  1676. no

  1677. more

  1678. neither

  1679. shall

  1680. there

  1681. be

  1682. mourning

  1683. nor

  1684. crying

  1685. nor

  1686. pain

  1687. anymore

  1688. for

  1689. the

  1690. former

  1691. things

  1692. have

  1693. passed

  1694. away

  1695. and

  1696. we

  1697. could

  1698. keep

  1699. going

  1700. but

  1701. for

  1702. now

  1703. I'll

  1704. stop

  1705. there

  1706. and

  1707. just

  1708. think

  1709. about

  1710. the

  1711. great

  1712. hope

  1713. we

  1714. have

  1715. the

  1716. dwelling

  1717. place

  1718. of

  1719. our

  1720. God

  1721. is

  1722. with

  1723. !

  1724. He

  1725. will

  1726. !

  1727. !

  1728. !

  1729. We

  1730. will

  1731. be

  1732. his

  1733. people

  1734. and

  1735. we'll

  1736. be

  1737. together

  1738. no

  1739. more

  1740. suffering

  1741. no

  1742. more

  1743. sin

  1744. he

  1745. will

  1746. redeem

  1747. Israel

  1748. from

  1749. all

  1750. his

  1751. iniquities

  1752. and

  1753. so

  1754. out

  1755. of

  1756. the

  1757. depths

  1758. we

  1759. hope

  1760. when

  1761. we're

  1762. stuck

  1763. in

  1764. the

  1765. sorrow

  1766. of

  1767. our

  1768. sin

  1769. the

  1770. depths

  1771. of

  1772. our

  1773. sin

  1774. we

  1775. should

  1776. know

  1777. that

  1778. we

  1779. don't

  1780. have

  1781. to

  1782. stay

  1783. there

  1784. Augustine

  1785. once

  1786. said

  1787. about

  1788. verse

  1789. one

  1790. but

  1791. when

  1792. he

  1793. crieth

  1794. from

  1795. the

  1796. deep

  1797. he

  1798. riseth

  1799. from

  1800. the

  1801. deep

  1802. and

  1803. his

  1804. very

  1805. cry

  1806. suffereth

  1807. him

  1808. not

  1809. to

  1810. be

  1811. long

  1812. at

  1813. the

  1814. bottom

  1815. even

  1816. in

  1817. the

  1818. depths

  1819. of

  1820. our

  1821. sorrow

  1822. over

  1823. our

  1824. sin

  1825. we

  1826. should

  1827. have

  1828. such

  1829. great

  1830. hope

  1831. knowing

  1832. that

  1833. we

  1834. are

  1835. fully

  1836. accepted

  1837. in

  1838. Christ

  1839. knowing

  1840. that

  1841. the

  1842. Lord

  1843. will

  1844. one

  1845. day

  1846. fully

  1847. sanctify

  1848. us

  1849. make

  1850. us

  1851. fully

  1852. free

  1853. from

  1854. sin

  1855. we

  1856. can

  1857. say

  1858. with

  1859. Paul

  1860. wretched

  1861. man

  1862. that I

  1863. am

  1864. who

  1865. will

  1866. deliver

  1867. me

  1868. from

  1869. this

  1870. body

  1871. of

  1872. death

  1873. thanks

  1874. be

  1875. to

  1876. God

  1877. through

  1878. Christ

  1879. Jesus

  1880. our

  1881. Lord

  1882. and

  1883. one

  1884. day

  1885. we

  1886. will

  1887. live

  1888. together

  1889. forever

  1890. with

  1891. him

  1892. so

  1893. when

  1894. we're

  1895. in

  1896. the

  1897. depths

  1898. when

  1899. we

  1900. feel

  1901. the

  1902. weight

  1903. of

  1904. our

  1905. sin

  1906. let's

  1907. cry

  1908. to

  1909. the

  1910. Lord

  1911. let's

  1912. watch

  1913. and

  1914. wait

  1915. for

  1916. him

  1917. and

  1918. let's

  1919. take

  1920. great

  1921. hope

  1922. knowing

  1923. that

  1924. on

  1925. our

  1926. own

  1927. if

  1928. our

  1929. sin

  1930. was

  1931. counted

  1932. against

  1933. us

  1934. none

  1935. of

  1936. us

  1937. could

  1938. stand

  1939. but

  1940. with

  1941. the

  1942. Lord

  1943. there

  1944. is

  1945. such

  1946. great

  1947. forgiveness

  1948. quoting

  1949. Dane

  1950. Ortlund

  1951. again

  1952. look

  1953. to

  1954. Christ

  1955. he

  1956. deals

  1957. gently

  1958. with

  1959. you

  1960. it's

  1961. the

  1962. only

  1963. way

  1964. he

  1965. knows

  1966. how

  1967. to

  1968. be

  1969. he

  1970. is

  1971. the

  1972. high

  1973. priest

  1974. to

  1975. end

  1976. all

  1977. high

  1978. priests

  1979. as

  1980. long

  1981. as

  1982. you

  1983. fix

  1984. your

  1985. attention

  1986. on

  1987. your

  1988. sin

  1989. you

  1990. will

  1991. fail

  1992. to

  1993. see

  1994. how

  1995. you

  1996. can

  1997. be

  1998. safe

  1999. but

  2000. as

  2001. long

  2002. as

  2003. you

  2004. look

  2005. to

  2006. this

  2007. high

  2008. priest

  2009. you

  2010. will

  2011. fail

  2012. to

  2013. see

  2014. how

  2015. you

  2016. can

  2017. be

  2018. in

  2019. danger

  2020. looking

  2021. inside

  2022. ourselves

  2023. we

  2024. can

  2025. anticipate

  2026. only

  2027. harshness

  2028. from

  2029. heaven

  2030. looking

  2031. out

  2032. to

  2033. Christ

  2034. we

  2035. can

  2036. anticipate

  2037. only

  2038. gentleness

  2039. with

  2040. our

  2041. Lord

  2042. there

  2043. is

  2044. steadfast

  2045. love

  2046. and

  2047. plentiful

  2048. redemption

  2049. for

  2050. all

  2051. who

  2052. trust

  2053. in

  2054. him

  2055. let's

  2056. read

  2057. our

  2058. psalm

  2059. one

  2060. more

  2061. time

  2062. in

  2063. closing

  2064. and

  2065. then

  2066. we'll

  2067. pray

  2068. out

  2069. of the

  2070. depths

  2071. I

  2072. cry

  2073. to

  2074. you

  2075. oh

  2076. Lord

  2077. oh

  2078. Lord

  2079. hear

  2080. my

  2081. voice

  2082. let

  2083. your

  2084. ears

  2085. be

  2086. attentive

  2087. to

  2088. the

  2089. voice

  2090. of

  2091. my

  2092. pleas

  2093. for

  2094. mercy

  2095. if

  2096. you

  2097. oh

  2098. Lord

  2099. should

  2100. mark

  2101. iniquities

  2102. oh

  2103. Lord

  2104. who

  2105. could

  2106. stand

  2107. but

  2108. with

  2109. you

  2110. there

  2111. is

  2112. forgiveness

  2113. that

  2114. you

  2115. may

  2116. be

  2117. feared

  2118. I

  2119. wait

  2120. for

  2121. the

  2122. Lord

  2123. my

  2124. soul

  2125. waits

  2126. and

  2127. in

  2128. his

  2129. word

  2130. I

  2131. hope

  2132. my

  2133. soul

  2134. waits

  2135. for

  2136. the

  2137. Lord

  2138. more

  2139. than

  2140. watchmen

  2141. for

  2142. the

  2143. morning

  2144. more

  2145. than

  2146. watchmen

  2147. for

  2148. the

  2149. morning

  2150. oh

  2151. Israel

  2152. hope

  2153. in

  2154. the

  2155. Lord

  2156. for

  2157. with

  2158. the

  2159. Lord

  2160. there

  2161. is

  2162. steadfast

  2163. love

  2164. and

  2165. with

  2166. him

  2167. is

  2168. plentiful

  2169. redemption

  2170. and

  2171. he

  2172. will

  2173. redeem

  2174. Israel

  2175. from

  2176. all

  2177. his

  2178. iniquities

  2179. let's

  2180. pray
