  1. Go ahead and take your copy of God's Word and open up to Psalm 34.

  2. Psalm chapter 34.

    Psalms 34 chapter mention

  3. My daughter, we think, has been teething lately, and so you can imagine how my nights have been.

  4. ! So I had way more coffee than I should have, so if I start shaking uncontrollably, it's not the Spirit or, you know, anything like that.

  5. It's just a lot of caffeine.

  6. So, but yeah, we'll be looking at Psalm 34 this morning.

  7. And, you know, I feel like since we're doing kind of random psalms this summer, every week started off with like an apologetic, like, why I picked this psalm.

  8. I picked this one because it relates heavily to the Sermon on the Mount, so you know I was going to take that opportunity, because if you know me, I'll take any excuse to bring that up.

  9. But then as I finished prep today, or yesterday, sorry, as I finished prep, I realized I never actually got to it.

  10. I didn't have time, so I was really sad and disappointed.

  11. So I say that on the front end to encourage you this week, if you have time, to read this side-by-side with the Beatitudes, Matthew 5, verses 3 through 12.

    Matthew 5:3–12

  12. And I trust that that will be a great benefit to you.

  13. But our text today is Psalm 34.

  14. This is a psalm that David wrote after his incident before Achish, the king of Gath.

  15. And you'll notice our psalm says, in the superscript, it says,

  16. After David changed before Abimelech.

  17. Okay, but Abimelech is not a name.

  18. It is a title.

  19. His name was Achish.

  20. And if you're familiar with this story, you'll recall from 1 Samuel, chapter 21, verses 10 through 15, that David was fleeing King Saul for his life.

    1 Samuel 21:10–15

  21. And in his evasion of Saul, he went into pagan territory, the homeland of Goliath, in fact, the giant that he had killed.

  22. And he went to Gath.

  23. And the residents of Gath recognized David and essentially said to themselves,

  24. Isn't this that guy that killed a bunch of our buddies?

  25. Isn't this why card night has been poorly attended?

  26. It's a lot of empty chairs.

  27. And David, recognizing that they were likely preparing to take vengeance to kill him,

  28. he begins to act as though he were crazier, loonier, insane to save himself.

  29. Right?

  30. And he did this to the point of letting spit run down his beard,

  31. which was a powerfully shameful image in the ancient world.

  32. And so why did he do this?

  33. Again, to preserve himself.

  34. He was hoping that, oh, they'll see I'm crazy, take pity on me, and not even take the time to kill me,

  35. because I'm just this crazy guy.

  36. And so it was.

  37. David was able to leave Gath with his life at the expense of great personal shame.

  38. But Psalm 34 records his thoughts after this event.

  39. Our psalm today is a reflection, then, of what was spurned in his mind by that event.

  40. And it leads him to worship the Lord, to testify concerning the Lord,

  41. and to instruct others for things pertaining to life and godliness.

  42. So our outline is simple, just a three-step outline.

  43. Number one, David's testimony.

  44. Number two, David's teaching.

  45. And number three, David's conclusion.

  46. So number one, David's testimony, verses 1 through 10.

  47. We'll begin reading in verse 1.

  48. David writes,

  49. So it's remarkable that David begins his psalm with praise.

  50. So contextually, remember, he's on the run from Saul, who wants to kill him.

  51. He narrowly escapes the Philistines by pretending to be crazy.

  52. And they, too, wanted to kill him.

  53. He's surrounded by his followers out in the wilderness,

  54. nowhere to safely lay his head and nowhere to safely worship the Lord,

  55. without the constant threat of death.

  56. And yet, here he is, worshiping the Lord.

  57. Verse 1,

  58. I will bless the Lord at all times.

  59. This praise is continually in his mouth.

  60. And that should be convicting to us all.

  61. I think of the times you've neglected Bible reading, neglected prayer, neglected fasting,

  62. neglected singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs because of whatever,

  63. behind on work, family obligations.

  64. I'm tired.

  65. I don't feel like it.

  66. We've all used those excuses before.

  67. And here is David, who probably had the best excuse, right?

  68. Lord, sorry, a bunch of people are trying to kill me.

  69. Don't have time to talk to you right now.

  70. Yet, he is worshiping the Lord.

  71. So this, for me, and I trust for all of us,

  72. was warrant to stop pretending as though our lives are so busy,

  73. as if our lives are so chaotic that we can't find time each day

  74. to worship the Lord through the means he has intended.

  75. And so I would encourage any of you who are limping spiritually right now

  76. to go before the Lord in prayer,

  77. to go before him and confess your sin

  78. and make a game plan to return to the restful work of worshiping the Lord.

  79. It is good for us to be humbly worshiping him

  80. and boasting of him and him alone.

  81. And in verse 3, don't miss the fact

  82. that David is worshiping the Lord in community.

  83. He's talking to somebody.

  84. He's talking to his guys,

  85. the guys with him out in the wilderness.

  86. He says, magnify the Lord with me.

  87. Let us exalt his name together.

  88. So these men who chose God's chosen,

  89. these men who have sided with David over Saul.

  90. This is the faith community, right?

  91. This is, dare I say, the church, right?

  92. This is the faith community in the Old Testament gathered around David,

  93. worshiping the Lord, being persecuted by the falsely religious Saul.

  94. And David invites them all to worship the Lord,

  95. and he's about to give testimony to God's goodness.

  96. So I would extend the same invitation to us all this morning,

  97. that as we read, as we meditate, as we think on God's word,

  98. we would worship the Lord and reflect upon his goodness to David together,

  99. recognizing that God's care for David and his band

  100. is paradigmatic for how he cares for us today.

  101. So looking at verse 4,

  102. we'll see David's testimonial of God's salvation and deliverance begin.

  103. He writes in verse 4,

  104. So why does David praise God?

  105. Because David has been delivered from all his fears.

  106. I don't know what all of his fears were exactly,

  107. but we can have a good idea, right?

  108. I get a good sense that he's probably afraid of Saul.

  109. He's probably afraid of Philistines.

  110. Death is probably on his mind constantly.

  111. He probably feared starving on the run, right?

  112. You can read stories of him taking bread from the priests.

  113. He left even without his weapons.

  114. So I'd imagine he's pretty fearful of these things.

  115. He's probably fearful of failure, right?

  116. All these men who've chosen to side with him out in the wilderness,

  117. their lives, their family lives, all at stake.

  118. And the amount of pressure and the fear

  119. that often accompanies such pressure for someone like David

  120. is unimaginable.

  121. Unimaginable.

  122. David testifies that those who look to God

  123. shall never be ashamed in verse 5.

  124. And the language of this verse is reminiscence of Moses,

  125. whose face changed in the presence of God in Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:29–35

  126. verses 29 through 35.

  127. If you recall, Moses came down from Mount Sinai,

  128. and when he came down, his face was radiant,

  129. and all of Israel was afraid of him

  130. because of how radiant his face was.

  131. It changed every time he met with God.

  132. And likewise, we have the benefit of the New Testament,

  133. which gives us a portrait of the greater Moses,

  134. our Lord Jesus Christ.

  135. Matthew 17 records Jesus' transfiguration

  136. before the disciples, the inner circle.

  137. And Jesus' face shone, is the words.

  138. His face shone like the sun,

  139. and his clothes became white as light.

  140. So Moses, his face was merely radiant,

  141. a reflection.

  142. It radiated the light of God.

  143. But here, Jesus, the light just came out from him,

  144. because he is God.

  145. So that greater description of Christ,

  146. clothes, in fact, lit up white.

  147. And David's testimony in verse 5,

  148. that all who look to God are radiant,

  149. and their faces shall never be ashamed,

  150. is language used throughout the Bible

  151. to describe those who draw near to God.

  152. Language used to describe those who put their trust in God.

  153. They are looking to him and him alone for deliverance,

  154. and he will deliver.

  155. They will not be ashamed.

  156. And so David's confidence is so strong,

  157. despite the circumstances.

  158. He says repeatedly and emphatically

  159. that God saves those who look to him,

  160. the righteous, the humble,

  161. the brokenhearted,

  162. as we shall see.

  163. And David's confidence is strong

  164. because it is in the Lord and not himself.

  165. Look at verse 6.

  166. David says of himself,

  167. This poor man cried,

  168. and the Lord heard him

  169. and saved him out of all his troubles.

  170. This poor man cried.

  171. And again, the emphasis of it being

  172. all of David's troubles that he is saved from.

  173. God saves the whole man

  174. from the whole of his issues.

  175. So perhaps you came to church today

  176. by dragging yourself,

  177. right?

  178. Finances have you weighed down,

  179. you're anxious,

  180. strife in your families,

  181. consuming your thoughts and energy,

  182. right?

  183. You're bitter, angry, or frustrated

  184. that you're incapable of reconciling

  185. all the wrongs.

  186. Perhaps a sense of loss,

  187. whether it be someone you know,

  188. a phase of life that you miss,

  189. or a friend who has moved away,

  190. your discontent.

  191. Perhaps you don't even know why you are,

  192. but you just know that you are

  193. dragging day to day,

  194. moment to moment.

  195. And one way or another,

  196. you've come to a place

  197. where you just recognize

  198. that you are powerless

  199. to do anything meaningful.

  200. You are incapable of effectively

  201. seeing the change

  202. you want to see in life.

  203. In fact, you recognize that

  204. even if you did have that power,

  205. you don't even know

  206. what's good for you,

  207. so you wouldn't bring it about

  208. because you don't know

  209. what to bring about.

  210. So even if you were this powerful,

  211. you recognize that ultimately

  212. you are weak, foolish, blind,

  213. deaf, and dumb.

  214. I can't do anything on my own.

  215. I can't provide for myself.

  216. I cannot save myself.

  217. If you've come to that place,

  218. that's the kind of state

  219. David was in,

  220. right?

  221. That blessed, poor man.

  222. David does not look to his kingship.

  223. He does not look to his army.

  224. He does not look to anything like that,

  225. but to God.

  226. And by grace,

  227. the Lord heard his cries,

  228. and he will hear ours too

  229. if we'd only look to him,

  230. right, to seek him

  231. and to worship him

  232. with fear and reverence,

  233. like David.

  234. And for those of us

  235. who do fear the Lord,

  236. who recognize that we're broken,

  237. that we're poor,

  238. that we deserve death

  239. and condemnation

  240. because of our sin.

  241. There's good news

  242. in verse 7.

  243. The angel of the Lord

  244. encamps around those

  245. who fear him

  246. and delivers them.

  247. Again, David seems

  248. to be picking up

  249. on Moses

  250. and his writings.

  251. The Lord encamped

  252. in the midst of Israel

  253. when they traveled

  254. in the wilderness.

  255. The Levite priests

  256. were tediously instructed

  257. on how to march

  258. with the Lord's tabernacle

  259. at the center.

  260. And the priests

  261. would surround it

  262. in the way they marched

  263. and the way they camped

  264. and the way they did everything.

  265. Numbers 1,

  266. chapter 1,

  267. verse 53,

  268. explains why.

  269. Moses writes,

  270. But the Levites

  271. shall camp

  272. around the tabernacle

  273. of testimony

  274. so that there may be

  275. no wrath

  276. on the congregation

  277. of the people of Israel.

  278. So Levites,

  279. as priests,

  280. provided a hedge

  281. of protection,

  282. so to speak,

  283. from God's holiness

  284. destroying the unholy people

  285. whom he tabernacled with.

  286. This was the means

  287. by which God

  288. was able to dwell

  289. with Israel

  290. by priests,

  291. by sacrifice,

  292. by bloodshed,

  293. by a covering.

  294. And the priests

  295. functioned as that covering.

  296. But notice Psalm 34,

  297. 7 doesn't say

  298. the Levites

  299. encamp around his people.

  300. It says the angel

  301. of the Lord

  302. encamps

  303. around his people.

  304. David seems

  305. to understand

  306. that this angel

  307. of the Lord figure

  308. is one who will take

  309. the role of priest.

  310. This is one

  311. who will be a barrier

  312. between us

  313. and the wrath of God

  314. which we justly deserve.

  315. And we know,

  316. of course,

  317. from the New Testament

  318. that the angel

  319. of the Lord

  320. is Jesus Christ.

  321. He provides

  322. the perfect sacrifice

  323. by offering himself

  324. on the cross

  325. to bear the wrath

  326. of God

  327. which we deserve.

  328. He intercedes

  329. before the Father

  330. on our behalf.

  331. Whoa.

  332. And he takes

  333. the role

  334. not only of high priest

  335. but the role

  336. of sacrificial lamb.

  337. Okay?

  338. And only he is fit

  339. for such a role.

  340. Who better

  341. to encamp

  342. around the people

  343. of God

  344. to shield us

  345. from the wrath

  346. of God

  347. than God

  348. himself.

  349. And we could show

  350. that the angel

  351. of the Lord

  352. is Jesus

  353. in a number

  354. of ways

  355. but spice it

  356. to say

  357. the angel

  358. of the Lord

  359. appears

  360. throughout

  361. the Old Testament.

  362. One example

  363. is when Abraham

  364. is about

  365. to sacrifice Isaac.

  366. We know

  367. from Genesis 22

  368. 11 through 18

  369. it's the angel

  370. of the Lord

  371. who shows up

  372. and says don't.

  373. And then again

  374. in Exodus 3 too

  375. it's the angel

  376. of the Lord

  377. who speaks

  378. to Moses

  379. through the burning bush.

  380. And very significantly

  381. the gospel

  382. of John

  383. opens by explaining

  384. how the word

  385. became flesh

  386. and Jesus

  387. was the word.

  388. John writes

  389. in chapter 1

  390. verse 14

  391. and this is the translation

  392. I like

  393. he writes

  394. and the word

  395. became flesh

  396. Jesus became flesh

  397. and tabernacled

  398. among us.

  399. Now the Greek word

  400. here is usually

  401. translated as

  402. dwelt

  403. or

  404. encamped.

  405. However

  406. John seems

  407. intentionally

  408. to be picking

  409. this word

  410. in a context

  411. where he's

  412. showing the deity

  413. and humanity

  414. of Christ.

  415. All that to say

  416. that

  417. John seems

  418. to have

  419. the ideas

  420. of tabernacle

  421. of wilderness

  422. wanderings

  423. of God

  424. among man

  425. all these things

  426. seem to be

  427. streaming through

  428. this one

  429. word choice

  430. tabernacled

  431. this angel

  432. of the Lord

  433. who encamps

  434. around those

  435. who fear him

  436. our Lord Jesus

  437. who delivers us.

  438. that's who

  439. David is

  440. talking about.

  441. So what does

  442. it mean

  443. to fear

  444. the Lord

  445. then?

  446. What does

  447. it mean

  448. to look

  449. like one

  450. who is

  451. of that

  452. community

  453. who fears

  454. the Lord

  455. who will be

  456. shielded

  457. from the

  458. wrath

  459. to come?

  460. Well we'll

  461. come back

  462. to that

  463. in verse

  464. 11

  465. as David

  466. does

  467. but looking

  468. at verses

  469. 8-10

  470. see how

  471. David cannot

  472. help but

  473. burst into

  474. praise again.

  475. He says

  476. in verse

  477. 8

  478. O taste

  479. and see

  480. that the

  481. Lord is

  482. good.

  483. Blessed

  484. is the

  485. man who

  486. takes refuge

  487. in him.

  488. O fear

  489. the Lord

  490. you his

  491. saints

  492. for those

  493. who fear

  494. him

  495. have no

  496. lack.

  497. The young

  498. lions suffer

  499. want and

  500. hunger

  501. but those

  502. who seek

  503. the Lord

  504. lack

  505. no

  506. good

  507. thing.

  508. Now I

  509. love

  510. eating.

  511. I love

  512. good food.

  513. And when I

  514. picture an

  515. ideal time

  516. with family

  517. or friends

  518. or whoever

  519. food is

  520. a constant.

  521. I picture

  522. you know

  523. ribs,

  524. fries,

  525. you name it,

  526. watermelon,

  527. all that

  528. stuff.

  529. And there's

  530. just something

  531. amazing about

  532. tasting.

  533. And there's

  534. really no

  535. substitute

  536. for tasting.

  537. I can't

  538. really think

  539. of anything

  540. that is

  541. like

  542. tasting.

  543. In fact,

  544. one of the

  545. times I

  546. felt the

  547. most subhuman

  548. in my

  549. life was

  550. when I

  551. had COVID

  552. and lost

  553. my taste.

  554. It was

  555. like,

  556. oh man,

  557. like there

  558. goes half

  559. my life.

  560. It was

  561. miserable.

  562. And God

  563. designed us

  564. with taste buds

  565. for a reason,

  566. right?

  567. To enjoy

  568. his gifts

  569. of food,

  570. not in a

  571. gluttonous

  572. way,

  573. but still

  574. to enjoy

  575. nonetheless,

  576. right?

  577. All the

  578. variety,

  579. all the

  580. nuance that

  581. you can get

  582. just from

  583. a piece

  584. of steak

  585. and how

  586. salted it

  587. is,

  588. how grilled

  589. it is,

  590. or how

  591. smoked it

  592. is,

  593. all the

  594. things you

  595. can do

  596. to that

  597. little guy

  598. that just

  599. invites it,

  600. you know?

  601. And then you

  602. add in,

  603. you know,

  604. vegetables,

  605. if they're

  606. buttered and

  607. cooked,

  608. of course,

  609. you know?

  610. All these

  611. kind of

  612. things.

  613. And so I

  614. love David's

  615. imagery here,

  616. taste,

  617. that the

  618. Lord is

  619. good,

  620. right?

  621. The nuance,

  622. the flavor,

  623. the experience

  624. from bite to

  625. bite,

  626. from hotter

  627. to colder,

  628. I mean,

  629. just all those

  630. things.

  631. How much

  632. more so

  633. with the

  634. Lord?

  635. How much

  636. greater,

  637. how much

  638. more satisfying,

  639. how much

  640. more joyful

  641. is it to

  642. taste that

  643. the Lord is

  644. good in so

  645. many ways,

  646. in every

  647. way?

  648. And David

  649. invites us to

  650. see that he

  651. is good,

  652. too.

  653. You know,

  654. what is it

  655. about a smile

  656. from someone

  657. that is so

  658. comforting?

  659. What is it

  660. about seeing

  661. someone look

  662. at us with a

  663. caring eye,

  664. or loving

  665. eye?

  666. What is it

  667. about seeing

  668. great rocks

  669. and trees

  670. and mountains

  671. and these

  672. kinds of

  673. things that

  674. evokes awe,

  675. beauty,

  676. and goodness

  677. in our

  678. hearts and

  679. minds?

  680. Again,

  681. whatever that

  682. is,

  683. imagine seeing

  684. God in our

  685. faces becoming

  686. radiant because

  687. of his

  688. surpassing

  689. goodness,

  690. his surpassing

  691. glory,

  692. to imagine

  693. that.

  694. In a way,

  695. David is

  696. saying,

  697. give God

  698. the eye

  699. test.

  700. And with

  701. great confidence,

  702. he's saying,

  703. if you look

  704. to him,

  705. if you give

  706. him that

  707. test,

  708. if you try

  709. him out

  710. in this

  711. way,

  712. no doubt

  713. you'll see

  714. he is

  715. good.

  716. Not evil,

  717. not a

  718. disappointing

  719. eye,

  720. not an

  721. unloving

  722. father,

  723. not a

  724. distant

  725. father,

  726. not a

  727. shady

  728. character

  729. whom we

  730. don't know

  731. what to

  732. make of,

  733. but we'll

  734. see and

  735. know the

  736. Lord is

  737. good.

  738. And the

  739. man who

  740. takes refuge

  741. in this

  742. good Lord

  743. is called

  744. blessed.

  745. So you

  746. can see

  747. the Sermon

  748. on the

  749. Mount,

  750. right?

  751. Oh,

  752. man.

  753. This is a

  754. beatitude,

  755. and they

  756. are found

  757. throughout

  758. Scripture,

  759. Old and

  760. New Testament.

  761. Essentially,

  762. the idea

  763. is that

  764. someone is

  765. considered

  766. blessed

  767. when the

  768. sum of

  769. their life

  770. will equate

  771. to flourishing,

  772. to happiness,

  773. fortunate,

  774. or bliss.

  775. This does

  776. not mean

  777. that a person

  778. will not

  779. experience

  780. persecution

  781. or trials,

  782. but that

  783. in the

  784. grand

  785. scheme

  786. of

  787. things,

  788. in the

  789. sum

  790. total,

  791. the

  792. negatives

  793. are

  794. insignificant.

  795. Why?

  796. Because they

  797. are only

  798. used,

  799. beatitudes

  800. that is,

  801. they are

  802. only used

  803. to describe

  804. true

  805. believers.

  806. So in

  807. the grand

  808. scheme

  809. of things,

  810. even though

  811. you might

  812. be boiled

  813. in a pot

  814. in this

  815. life for

  816. Christ's

  817. sake,

  818. in the

  819. grand

  820. scheme

  821. of things,

  822. you are

  823. blessed

  824. because you

  825. will reign

  826. in

  827. eternity

  828. with God

  829. by grace.

  830. So anyone

  831. in this

  832. life can

  833. see that

  834. the Lord

  835. is good,

  836. but only

  837. the one

  838. who takes

  839. refuge in

  840. the Lord

  841. will feast

  842. and enjoy

  843. him forever

  844. and eternity.

  845. Those of us

  846. who have

  847. recognized

  848. that we

  849. are poor

  850. men like

  851. David and

  852. have sought

  853. the Lord

  854. alone for

  855. this refuge,

  856. this deliverance,

  857. this salvation

  858. with which he

  859. speaks,

  860. will not

  861. be disappointed.

  862. So what

  863. are we

  864. to do?

  865. Well,

  866. David says

  867. in verses

  868. 9-10

  869. that we

  870. are to

  871. fear the

  872. Lord.

  873. Why?

  874. Because he

  875. encamps

  876. around those

  877. who fear

  878. him.

  879. He saves

  880. those

  881. who fear

  882. him.

  883. And because

  884. he is

  885. good to

  886. those

  887. who fear

  888. him,

  889. they lack

  890. no good

  891. thing.

  892. Others

  893. will starve

  894. and hunger

  895. and thirst

  896. and shall

  897. not be

  898. satisfied

  899. like young

  900. lions,

  901. but we

  902. who place

  903. faith in

  904. Christ

  905. will not

  906. be ashamed.

  907. We will

  908. be

  909. delivered.

  910. Now we

  911. get asked

  912. the question,

  913. what does

  914. it mean

  915. to fear

  916. the Lord?

  917. We've

  918. had David's

  919. testimony

  920. of God's

  921. goodness

  922. from verses

  923. 1-10

  924. to which

  925. he discussed

  926. the fear

  927. of the

  928. Lord a

  929. lot,

  930. but what

  931. actually

  932. is it?

  933. Well,

  934. here David's

  935. second invitation

  936. verses 11-12

  937. he says,

  938. come,

  939. oh children,

  940. listen to

  941. me.

  942. I will

  943. teach you

  944. the fear

  945. of the

  946. Lord.

  947. So

  948. everything

  949. we're

  950. about

  951. to read

  952. will cover

  953. this.

  954. What

  955. is the

  956. fear

  957. of the

  958. Lord?

  959. But he

  960. goes on

  961. in verse

  962. 12 to

  963. spice it

  964. up more.

  965. He says,

  966. what man

  967. is there

  968. who desires

  969. life and

  970. loves many

  971. days that

  972. he may

  973. see good?

  974. He's

  975. asking,

  976. who loves

  977. life and

  978. desires a

  979. long,

  980. full,

  981. flourishing

  982. time on

  983. earth by

  984. walking with

  985. God,

  986. by seeing

  987. good?

  988. God,

  989. he may

  990. have

  991. to

  992. love

  993. him.

  994. And I

  995. just want

  996. to pause

  997. for a

  998. moment and

  999. reflect on

  1000. something here.

  1001. You know,

  1002. I cannot tell

  1003. you how often

  1004. I've expressed

  1005. something like,

  1006. I can't wait

  1007. till this is all

  1008. over.

  1009. Right?

  1010. Not in a

  1011. depressed sense,

  1012. not in a

  1013. suicidal sense,

  1014. but just simply

  1015. recognizing that

  1016. once this life

  1017. is over,

  1018. I'm not going

  1019. to miss it.

  1020. Right?

  1021. I'm going to be

  1022. in heaven,

  1023. I'm going to

  1024. enjoy God,

  1025. there's nothing

  1026. in this life

  1027. I would

  1028. prefer over

  1029. that.

  1030. And so

  1031. there's been

  1032. this expression

  1033. of just,

  1034. man,

  1035. I can't wait

  1036. for this all

  1037. to be over,

  1038. the suffering,

  1039. the pain,

  1040. the agony,

  1041. all of it.

  1042. And I've

  1043. heard many

  1044. of you

  1045. express this

  1046. in similar

  1047. ways.

  1048. But here,

  1049. David assumes

  1050. we ought

  1051. to long

  1052. for a long

  1053. life to

  1054. see good.

  1055. And I am

  1056. so encouraged

  1057. by this.

  1058. Like me,

  1059. you've probably

  1060. looked at the

  1061. world and

  1062. just thought,

  1063. wow,

  1064. it was already

  1065. bad and it

  1066. just seems to

  1067. be aggressively,

  1068. unceasingly

  1069. getting worse

  1070. at a rapid

  1071. rate.

  1072. I can't even

  1073. keep up with

  1074. it.

  1075. Right?

  1076. We wake up

  1077. and the reality

  1078. is pretty much

  1079. every week we're

  1080. hearing about a

  1081. school shooting.

  1082. Right?

  1083. More anger,

  1084. more confusion,

  1085. more broken

  1086. families,

  1087. sexual revolution

  1088. is going on

  1089. in more directions

  1090. than ever imaginable

  1091. and on and on.

  1092. And this rightly

  1093. makes us all

  1094. just long

  1095. for Christ's

  1096. return,

  1097. long for heaven.

  1098. But even so,

  1099. David,

  1100. in the midst

  1101. of the same

  1102. fallen and

  1103. broken world,

  1104. holds out the

  1105. enticement.

  1106. Who desires

  1107. a long life

  1108. that they may

  1109. see good?

  1110. Who wants to

  1111. live a long life

  1112. and see good

  1113. despite all

  1114. the evil

  1115. in this world?

  1116. This was like

  1117. a Frodo

  1118. moment for me.

  1119. It was Sam

  1120. Wise just told

  1121. me, you know,

  1122. there's good

  1123. in this world

  1124. and it's worth

  1125. fighting for.

  1126. I mean,

  1127. it's just like,

  1128. oh, you know.

  1129. So how do we

  1130. find this good?

  1131. How do we

  1132. experience God

  1133. here and now?

  1134. How do we

  1135. live the good

  1136. in long life

  1137. in this fallen,

  1138. broken,

  1139. dark world

  1140. if the Lord

  1141. wills?

  1142. Well,

  1143. let's look at

  1144. David's teaching,

  1145. the second part

  1146. of our outline,

  1147. David's teaching

  1148. in verses 11

  1149. through 20.

  1150. So what is

  1151. David teaching?

  1152. As we said,

  1153. he's teaching

  1154. the fear

  1155. of the Lord

  1156. as he says

  1157. in verse 11

  1158. and he describes

  1159. it in verses

  1160. 13 through 14

  1161. where he writes,

  1162. keep your tongue

  1163. from evil

  1164. and your lips

  1165. from speaking

  1166. deceit.

  1167. Turn away

  1168. from evil

  1169. and do good.

  1170. Seek peace

  1171. and pursue it.

  1172. According to

  1173. David,

  1174. the fear of the

  1175. Lord is obedience

  1176. or at least

  1177. it results

  1178. in obedience.

  1179. And that should

  1180. sound familiar,

  1181. right?

  1182. Doesn't that sound

  1183. like our study

  1184. of James

  1185. which we went

  1186. through recently?

  1187. Control your tongue,

  1188. practice good,

  1189. seek peace,

  1190. pursue it

  1191. wherever you

  1192. don't have it.

  1193. The good life

  1194. is not one full

  1195. of cursing

  1196. and bitterness

  1197. and anger

  1198. and conflict

  1199. and loose talk

  1200. or sin,

  1201. but it is full

  1202. of peace,

  1203. joy,

  1204. love,

  1205. harmony,

  1206. wholeness.

  1207. These good

  1208. things.

  1209. And we begin

  1210. this good life

  1211. according to

  1212. David,

  1213. we begin

  1214. this good life

  1215. by repenting.

  1216. Right?

  1217. He says,

  1218. turn away.

  1219. You could replace

  1220. that with the

  1221. language repent

  1222. from evil

  1223. and do

  1224. good.

  1225. Now,

  1226. perhaps you're

  1227. frustrated by

  1228. some of the

  1229. things I'm

  1230. saying like

  1231. earth to Zach,

  1232. people in this

  1233. life are evil

  1234. and they hate

  1235. us.

  1236. Right?

  1237. How can I

  1238. ever live in

  1239. peace when

  1240. they will

  1241. give me none?

  1242. How can I

  1243. ever hold my

  1244. lips when

  1245. they do

  1246. nothing but

  1247. let theirs

  1248. go?

  1249. How can I

  1250. not repay

  1251. evil for

  1252. evil?

  1253. But keep

  1254. reading verses

  1255. 15 through

  1256. 18 and

  1257. notice the

  1258. contrast.

  1259. David writes,

  1260. the eyes

  1261. of the

  1262. Lord are

  1263. toward the

  1264. righteous

  1265. and his

  1266. ears toward

  1267. their cry.

  1268. The face

  1269. of the

  1270. Lord is

  1271. against those

  1272. who do

  1273. evil to

  1274. cut off the

  1275. memory of

  1276. them from

  1277. the earth.

  1278. When the

  1279. righteous cry

  1280. for help,

  1281. the Lord

  1282. hears and

  1283. delivers them

  1284. out of all

  1285. their troubles.

  1286. The Lord

  1287. is near to

  1288. the broken

  1289. hearted and

  1290. saves the

  1291. crushed and

  1292. spirits.

  1293. So the

  1294. contrast,

  1295. God is

  1296. for the

  1297. righteous and

  1298. he opposes

  1299. the evildoer.

  1300. We won't

  1301. even remember

  1302. the wicked,

  1303. nor will

  1304. anyone remember

  1305. the wicked.

  1306. Their evil

  1307. lives and

  1308. the damage

  1309. they do

  1310. during those

  1311. lives is

  1312. so small,

  1313. so inconsequential

  1314. and so

  1315. brief.

  1316. As Job

  1317. 18.5

  1318. says,

  1319. indeed,

  1320. the light

  1321. of the

  1322. wicked goes

  1323. out and

  1324. the flame

  1325. of his

  1326. fire gives

  1327. no light.

  1328. In other

  1329. words,

  1330. they will

  1331. all

  1332. die.

  1333. Nothing

  1334. will be

  1335. left of

  1336. them,

  1337. nothing

  1338. left of

  1339. their

  1340. works

  1341. or

  1342. anything.

  1343. There's

  1344. nothing

  1345. they can

  1346. do in

  1347. this life

  1348. that will

  1349. permanently

  1350. damage

  1351. us.

  1352. It will

  1353. not affect

  1354. our

  1355. eternity

  1356. with God.

  1357. And Jesus

  1358. picks up on

  1359. this theme

  1360. in Matthew

    Matthew 10:28

  1361. 10,

  1362. verse 28.

  1363. He says,

  1364. do not

  1365. fear those

  1366. who can

  1367. kill the

  1368. body

  1369. but cannot

  1370. kill the

  1371. soul.

  1372. Rather,

  1373. fear him

  1374. who can

  1375. destroy both

  1376. soul and

  1377. body in

  1378. hell.

  1379. In other

  1380. words,

  1381. fear God

  1382. alone.

  1383. He's picking

  1384. up on this

  1385. Psalm 34

  1386. idea.

  1387. Set aside

  1388. all your

  1389. worldly fears

  1390. in exchange

  1391. for a healthy,

  1392. good fear

  1393. of the

  1394. Lord.

  1395. word.

  1396. Now,

  1397. if you're

  1398. looking for

  1399. additional

  1400. reason or

  1401. encouragement

  1402. to pray this

  1403. week,

  1404. look no

  1405. further than

  1406. verses 15

  1407. and 17.

  1408. As a

  1409. God-fearer,

  1410. a person

  1411. practicing

  1412. righteousness,

  1413. the Lord's

  1414. ear is

  1415. toward your

  1416. cry.

  1417. You have

  1418. his attention.

  1419. And further,

  1420. when you cry

  1421. out to God,

  1422. he will

  1423. hear your

  1424. prayer and

  1425. he will

  1426. save you

  1427. out of all

  1428. your troubles.

  1429. Now,

  1430. this doesn't

  1431. mean he'll

  1432. answer any

  1433. prayer you

  1434. pray,

  1435. right?

  1436. He's not

  1437. going to

  1438. drop a

  1439. Lamborghini

  1440. out of

  1441. heaven.

  1442. That would

  1443. be ridiculous.

  1444. But this

  1445. is a promise

  1446. ultimately that

  1447. God will

  1448. bless you.

  1449. He will

  1450. strengthen

  1451. you to

  1452. endure in

  1453. your

  1454. troubles.

  1455. He will

  1456. eventually

  1457. remove your

  1458. troubles,

  1459. either in

  1460. this life or

  1461. by ending

  1462. your life and

  1463. bringing you

  1464. to heaven.

  1465. All will

  1466. be well

  1467. or blessed.

  1468. it.

  1469. Your prayer

  1470. will be

  1471. answered when

  1472. your prayer

  1473. reflects the

  1474. will of

  1475. God.

  1476. So commit

  1477. yourself to

  1478. prayer and

  1479. pray often,

  1480. pray long,

  1481. pray short,

  1482. pray,

  1483. and God

  1484. will hear

  1485. you and

  1486. answer.

  1487. And there's

  1488. something else

  1489. in these

  1490. verses I do

  1491. not want to

  1492. miss.

  1493. Notice that

  1494. David brings

  1495. up the

  1496. dwelling or

  1497. encamping

  1498. language again

  1499. in verse

  1500. 18.

  1501. He says

  1502. the Lord

  1503. is near

  1504. to the

  1505. brokenhearted

  1506. and saves

  1507. the crushed

  1508. in spirit.

  1509. Now by

  1510. itself,

  1511. this may

  1512. not be

  1513. shocking to

  1514. you,

  1515. but I

  1516. found this

  1517. verse a

  1518. little shocking

  1519. in the

  1520. flow of

  1521. the chapter.

  1522. Just

  1523. moments ago

  1524. in verse

  1525. 12,

  1526. David is

  1527. assuming we

  1528. want to

  1529. live long

  1530. lives to

  1531. see good.

  1532. And that

  1533. good is

  1534. real in

  1535. this life.

  1536. But here

  1537. he is saying

  1538. that the

  1539. faith community

  1540. is one

  1541. of broken

  1542. hearted

  1543. people.

  1544. People who

  1545. are crushed

  1546. in spirit.

  1547. And we

  1548. might see a

  1549. problem in

  1550. holding these

  1551. two things

  1552. out.

  1553. We want to

  1554. live long

  1555. lives to

  1556. see good

  1557. and yet

  1558. crushed in

  1559. spirit,

  1560. broken

  1561. hearted.

  1562. But David

  1563. has no

  1564. problem talking

  1565. in these

  1566. terms.

  1567. He has no

  1568. problem holding

  1569. both as

  1570. true.

  1571. And again,

  1572. I find this

  1573. so encouraging.

  1574. I find it

  1575. encouraging

  1576. because on

  1577. the one hand

  1578. I do see

  1579. good in

  1580. this life.

  1581. I love my

  1582. family.

  1583. I think about

  1584. my wife and

  1585. daughter all

  1586. the time when

  1587. I'm not with

  1588. them.

  1589. I spent two

  1590. weeks in

  1591. Louisville a

  1592. few weeks

  1593. ago and

  1594. basically spent

  1595. half my time

  1596. looking at

  1597. photos of

  1598. my baby

  1599. girl.

  1600. I love my

  1601. church family.

  1602. I love the

  1603. beauty of

  1604. nature.

  1605. I love

  1606. singing great

  1607. hymns that

  1608. praise God.

  1609. I love sharing

  1610. meals with

  1611. brothers and

  1612. sisters.

  1613. I mean,

  1614. I could go on

  1615. and on about

  1616. good things I

  1617. have seen and

  1618. experienced in

  1619. this life,

  1620. good things that

  1621. I have in

  1622. my life,

  1623. all by God's

  1624. grace and

  1625. kindness,

  1626. all of it

  1627. being so

  1628. good.

  1629. But at the

  1630. same time,

  1631. I feel exactly

  1632. what David is

  1633. talking about,

  1634. right?

  1635. Day to day,

  1636. crushed in

  1637. spirit,

  1638. brokenhearted.

  1639. You know,

  1640. primarily I think

  1641. about this because

  1642. of my own sin,

  1643. right?

  1644. Day to day,

  1645. recognizing that

  1646. I fail to

  1647. honor God

  1648. rightly in so

  1649. many ways,

  1650. in varying

  1651. ways,

  1652. in varying

  1653. degrees.

  1654. Likewise,

  1655. I am broken

  1656. hearted and

  1657. crushed in

  1658. spirit.

  1659. When I look

  1660. at the world

  1661. around us,

  1662. every day it

  1663. just seems like

  1664. everything's

  1665. falling apart

  1666. more and

  1667. more.

  1668. With all of

  1669. creation,

  1670. I'm groaning

  1671. for Christ's

  1672. return.

  1673. So why am I

  1674. encouraged by

  1675. these two

  1676. realities?

  1677. I'm encouraged

  1678. because they

  1679. are normal

  1680. and to be

  1681. expected in

  1682. the Christian

  1683. life.

  1684. I don't know

  1685. about you,

  1686. but whenever I

  1687. feel these things

  1688. in tension

  1689. in my mind,

  1690. in my heart,

  1691. I sometimes

  1692. start to think

  1693. like I'm

  1694. weird or

  1695. something's

  1696. wrong,

  1697. you know,

  1698. that I can

  1699. swing from

  1700. one degree

  1701. to the other

  1702. so quickly

  1703. by the hour.

  1704. But it is

  1705. normal.

  1706. And I'm

  1707. encouraged because

  1708. David and his

  1709. followers felt

  1710. this way,

  1711. thought this

  1712. way, right?

  1713. I'm not the

  1714. only one.

  1715. The same God

  1716. who proved

  1717. faithful,

  1718. able,

  1719. and gracious

  1720. to sustain

  1721. David will

  1722. sustain me

  1723. and he

  1724. will sustain

  1725. all of us

  1726. who believe.

  1727. In fact,

  1728. look at the

  1729. next two

  1730. verses,

  1731. verses 19

  1732. through 20.

  1733. David writes,

  1734. many are the

  1735. afflictions,

  1736. so they're

  1737. real,

  1738. he's recognizing

  1739. them,

  1740. though they're

  1741. small,

  1742. though they're

  1743. brief,

  1744. there they

  1745. are.

  1746. Many are

  1747. the afflictions

  1748. of the

  1749. righteous,

  1750. but the

  1751. Lord delivers

  1752. him out of

  1753. them all.

  1754. He keeps

  1755. all his

  1756. bones,

  1757. not one

  1758. of them

  1759. is broken.

  1760. So though

  1761. there may

  1762. be many

  1763. afflictions

  1764. of many

  1765. kinds

  1766. and many

  1767. degrees,

  1768. the Lord

  1769. delivers us

  1770. out of

  1771. all of

  1772. them.

  1773. Not one

  1774. bone is

  1775. broken,

  1776. meaning he

  1777. keeps us,

  1778. he preserves

  1779. us,

  1780. no one

  1781. and nothing

  1782. can interfere

  1783. with God's

  1784. plan,

  1785. with what

  1786. the Lord

  1787. has in

  1788. store.

  1789. That is

  1790. David's

  1791. teaching,

  1792. fear the

  1793. Lord,

  1794. obey the

  1795. Lord,

  1796. seek the

  1797. Lord,

  1798. and he

  1799. will not

  1800. disappoint.

  1801. So David's

  1802. conclusion,

  1803. verse 21

  1804. through 22,

  1805. he writes

  1806. in verse 21,

  1807. Affliction

  1808. will slay

  1809. the wicked,

  1810. and those

  1811. who hate

  1812. the righteous

  1813. will be

  1814. condemned.

  1815. The Lord

  1816. redeems

  1817. the life

  1818. of his

  1819. servants.

  1820. None of

  1821. those who

  1822. take refuge

  1823. in him

  1824. will be

  1825. condemned.

  1826. So notice

  1827. that shift.

  1828. We believers

  1829. will be

  1830. delivered

  1831. from our

  1832. afflictions,

  1833. while the

  1834. wicked

  1835. will be

  1836. delivered

  1837. to

  1838. affliction.

  1839. God will

  1840. punish the

  1841. ungodly.

  1842. It is only

  1843. a matter

  1844. of time.

  1845. And frankly,

  1846. even now,

  1847. their punishment

  1848. has begun

  1849. to some degree

  1850. because they

  1851. are without

  1852. God.

  1853. They refuse

  1854. to taste

  1855. and see

  1856. his goodness.

  1857. They don't

  1858. even know

  1859. how to

  1860. enjoy this

  1861. life.

  1862. They're

  1863. denying

  1864. themselves

  1865. true delight

  1866. in God

  1867. for false

  1868. delight

  1869. in their

  1870. idols.

  1871. they hate

  1872. God

  1873. and they

  1874. hate

  1875. God's

  1876. people

  1877. and on

  1878. both

  1879. accounts

  1880. they will

  1881. be

  1882. condemned.

  1883. Justice

  1884. will

  1885. reign.

  1886. And I

  1887. think it

  1888. is fitting

  1889. that David

  1890. in this

  1891. circumstance

  1892. where he's

  1893. reflecting on

  1894. such a

  1895. moment,

  1896. right,

  1897. in this

  1898. fleeing of

  1899. Saul,

  1900. this fleeing

  1901. of the

  1902. Philistines

  1903. with his

  1904. men,

  1905. facing

  1906. death,

  1907. facing

  1908. unnecessary

  1909. persecution

  1910. in the

  1911. sense that

  1912. it is

  1913. evil and

  1914. wrong,

  1915. facing all

  1916. these things

  1917. and his

  1918. final thoughts

  1919. are on

  1920. the future,

  1921. on judgment,

  1922. on the

  1923. great day

  1924. in which

  1925. Christ will

  1926. come and

  1927. separate the

  1928. goats from

  1929. the sheep.

  1930. He finds

  1931. comfort in

  1932. knowing that

  1933. I don't have

  1934. to right the

  1935. wrongs,

  1936. there is a

  1937. lawgiver,

  1938. there is a

  1939. judge,

  1940. there is a

  1941. king and

  1942. he is

  1943. coming who

  1944. is able

  1945. and powerful

  1946. to save

  1947. and to

  1948. destroy,

  1949. who will

  1950. bring about

  1951. justice.

  1952. So for

  1953. those who

  1954. have truly

  1955. repented,

  1956. who have

  1957. sought the

  1958. Lord in

  1959. our

  1960. brokenness,

  1961. like David,

  1962. we will

  1963. not be

  1964. condemned,

  1965. we will

  1966. not be

  1967. ashamed,

  1968. but we

  1969. will be

  1970. delivered.

  1971. Let's

  1972. pray.
