  1. We'll spend some time today in Ephesians chapter 5, verses 11 through 17.

    Ephesians 5:11–17

  2. But you may have noticed, perhaps you have a bulletin,

  3. that instead of a text for today's sermon, which is normative for us, there is a title,

  4. Building a Resilient Church Culture, Part One.

  5. A little over a year ago, I preached this sermon, and your elders now, a year later,

  6. thought it wise to revisit the idea and develop it further.

  7. So today, I'll re-preach that sermon, some small edits,

  8. and then in the coming five weeks, Lord willing, we will think together about each of my five sub-points,

  9. which I'll cover in brief this morning.

  10. Before we get started, I want to note a few things.

  11. Number one, as a general practice, we preach expositional sermons.

  12. Most simply put, this means that we take for the sermon's point or points,

  13. the main point or points of that week's text.

  14. We exegete the text, right?

  15. The text drives what we're doing together, it speaks to us.

  16. We read it, explain it, and we give application from it.

  17. But we are careful not to eisegete a text or read into the text what we want to see in the text.

  18. And this is why we tend to preach verse by verse,

  19. because it lends itself toward good exegesis and away from eisegesis,

  20. although it's still possible to do so.

  21. However, from time to time, a topical sermon has its place,

  22. which is what I will be doing this morning.

  23. And I just want you to know that you should be especially discerning sitting under topical preaching.

  24. Number two, I am not trying to be an alarmist this morning.

  25. The elders of the church don't want to come off as alarmists.

  26. That said, we feel a burden to prepare you for challenges that we believe are coming.

  27. It's our hope that you know us well enough to know that we love you very much,

  28. and we want good for you,

  29. and above that, we want glory for our God.

  30. And thirdly, I will not have nearly enough time this morning or in the coming five weeks to exhaust this topic.

  31. So we will need to talk more about it,

  32. both in our formal gather times and in our informal day-to-day gathering.

  33. This needs to be a primer for more conversation.

  34. I've thought a lot about this, but my thinking is not done.

  35. I do hope that you will ask questions,

  36. that you will push at my thinking,

  37. and that you will spend time with the Lord and His Word

  38. as you consider the days in which we live.

  39. So, Ephesians chapter 5, beginning in verse 11 and following,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  40. before I read it, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us,

  41. that it was written for His glory and our good.

  42. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  43. and to obey its commands.

  44. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness,

  45. but instead expose them.

  46. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.

  47. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible.

  48. For anything that becomes visible is light.

  49. Therefore it says,

  50. Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead,

  51. and Christ will shine on you.

  52. Look carefully then how you walk,

  53. not as unwise but as wise,

  54. making the best use of the time because the days are evil.

  55. Therefore do not be foolish,

  56. but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  57. So we are exhorted in this text

  58. to not participate in the unfruitful works of darkness,

  59. but rather to expose them.

  60. By which he means to expose them as unfruitful works of darkness.

  61. Show them for what they are.

  62. Paul has previously given a sampling of the unfruitful works

  63. that he is referring to beginning in chapter 5 and verse 3.

  64. Sexual immorality, impurity, covetousness, idolatry,

  65. filthy talk, foolish talk, crude joking.

  66. I don't think that Paul means for us to understand this list as exhaustive,

  67. but to give us an idea of those things that we are meant to avoid and to expose.

  68. He juxtaposes this kind of unfruitful living

  69. with a living that we must assume would be fruitful,

  70. if it's to be the opposite of the unfruitful living.

  71. Verse 15,

  72. Look carefully then how you walk,

  73. not as unwise,

  74. but as wise,

  75. making the best use of the time because the days are evil.

  76. Therefore do not be foolish,

  77. but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  78. So the fruitful life,

  79. Paul tells us,

  80. is in part

  81. careful

  82. and wise

  83. and efficient

  84. and informed.

  85. And he is exhorting this kind of caution

  86. because our time is limited

  87. and because the days are

  88. evil.

  89. By God's divine appointing,

  90. he has made us Christians

  91. in the 21st century,

  92. assuming that you are

  93. in Christ.

  94. He has made us

  95. for this time.

  96. So to be clear,

  97. these are

  98. our evil days.

  99. This text,

  100. originally written to these Ephesian believers,

  101. was also written for us

  102. and has bearing on our lives

  103. today.

  104. So we must ask,

  105. what are the particular evils

  106. of our day?

  107. What unfruitful works of darkness

  108. are we meant

  109. to be exposing?

  110. And to be clear,

  111. there are so

  112. many.

  113. The list goes on

  114. and on.

  115. Today,

  116. I want us to consider

  117. a particular

  118. rising tide

  119. as we think about

  120. this need

  121. to build a resilient

  122. church culture.

  123. It's a rising tide

  124. that is making

  125. ground inland

  126. at a steady rate.

  127. One that we will have

  128. to build a resilient

  129. church children

  130. to stand against.

  131. We're going to have to do it

  132. if we're going to

  133. survive.

  134. And this particular evil

  135. is the evil

  136. of the redefinition

  137. of our

  138. anthropology.

  139. Who we are

  140. and why

  141. we exist.

  142. This redefinition

  143. is happening

  144. on multiple fronts

  145. and I'm sure

  146. this is not

  147. exhaustive.

  148. It's happening

  149. as it concerns

  150. the unborn.

  151. Unborn children

  152. are defined as

  153. babies if they are

  154. wanted,

  155. fetuses if they are

  156. unwanted.

  157. And praise be to God

  158. that Roe and Casey

  159. have been overturned,

  160. but this cultural evil

  161. still

  162. exists.

  163. This is happening

  164. in the case of

  165. men and women.

  166. It's fine,

  167. gender as social

  168. constructs and not

  169. biological

  170. definitions.

  171. This happens

  172. as it concerns

  173. minorities,

  174. which these days

  175. seems to be any

  176. human who is

  177. not white

  178. and straight.

  179. And these minorities

  180. are necessarily

  181. viewed as

  182. oppressed.

  183. Now,

  184. we certainly

  185. don't have time

  186. today to explore

  187. each of these ideas

  188. and look to the

  189. scripture for the

  190. answers,

  191. although it does

  192. have the answers.

  193. But we need to

  194. have our eyes

  195. open to the fact

  196. that each of

  197. these ideologies

  198. stand in

  199. contradiction

  200. to the scripture.

  201. To hold a

  202. Christian worldview

  203. of the sanctity

  204. of human life,

  205. the biological

  206. assignment of

  207. gender by our

  208. God,

  209. the proper

  210. exercise of

  211. sexuality within

  212. a biblical

  213. marriage,

  214. and a God-ordered

  215. justice,

  216. will make us

  217. more uncomfortable

  218. in the coming

  219. years than I

  220. think most of

  221. us are ready

  222. for.

  223. I think things

  224. are going to

  225. be tougher

  226. than you might

  227. imagine.

  228. Your elders'

  229. concern for the

  230. church is that

  231. we will have to

  232. be deliberate

  233. in our efforts

  234. to build a

  235. resilient church

  236. culture as our

  237. society swiftly

  238. moves toward

  239. totalitarianism.

  240. Now,

  241. totalitarianism

  242. is a system

  243. requiring

  244. complete

  245. subservience.

  246. It has

  247. at its head

  248. some set of

  249. ideas,

  250. and if you

  251. don't fall in

  252. line with

  253. every one of

  254. those ideas,

  255. then you do

  256. not belong.

  257. You will,

  258. in the case of

  259. hard totalitarianism,

  260. be put in the

  261. gulags of

  262. communist Russia.

  263. So,

  264. hard totalitarianism

  265. comes in the form

  266. of these kind of

  267. regimes,

  268. right,

  269. that rule and

  270. reign over a

  271. people.

  272. You step out of

  273. line,

  274. you're punished.

  275. Soft totalitarianism

  276. is what we're

  277. going to experience

  278. in our day,

  279. at least for

  280. some time,

  281. and probably

  282. just soft

  283. totalitarianism.

  284. Those of you who

  285. know me know

  286. that I'm not

  287. much of an

  288. optimist,

  289. but in this

  290. case,

  291. I'll say it'll

  292. likely come just

  293. in the form of

  294. soft totalitarianism,

  295. which means it

  296. will be coerced

  297. by the economy

  298. and will be

  299. policed on

  300. social media.

  301. Just as an

  302. example,

  303. think for a

  304. moment,

  305. since the

  306. overturning of

  307. Roe and Casey,

  308. how many

  309. companies have

  310. morally postured

  311. themselves as

  312. being for

  313. quote-unquote

  314. feminine rights,

  315. right?

  316. We have to be

  317. thinking about

  318. what brand of

  319. pants we wear.

  320. I don't want to

  321. think about what

  322. brand of pants I

  323. wear.

  324. I just want to

  325. wear the pants.

  326. I just want a

  327. pant company to be

  328. a pant company

  329. and not be

  330. politically and

  331. socially engaged,

  332. right?

  333. But in a

  334. growing sense,

  335. if you're not

  336. on board,

  337. then you're

  338. canceled,

  339. right?

  340. Cut out of

  341. society,

  342. ostracized as

  343. a result.

  344. I think,

  345. just as a

  346. kind of high

  347. view observation,

  348. that the highest

  349. value of

  350. Americans is

  351. comfort.

  352. It's what

  353. Americans generally,

  354. it's true of us

  355. too.

  356. What we like

  357. more than

  358. anything is

  359. our comfort.

  360. Our second

  361. highest value,

  362. until it gets

  363. in the way of

  364. the highest

  365. value,

  366. is our

  367. autonomy.

  368. We want to

  369. do what we

  370. want to do,

  371. when we want

  372. to do it,

  373. unless we're

  374. uncomfortable,

  375. and then you

  376. can tell us

  377. whatever you

  378. want us to

  379. do.

  380. We saw this

  381. play out

  382. across a

  383. recent pandemic,

  384. right?

  385. Able to give

  386. up so much

  387. if you just

  388. keep me

  389. comfortable,

  390. right?

  391. Don't cast

  392. me out.

  393. Don't cancel

  394. me.

  395. Don't call

  396. me out on

  397. the streets

  398. or in the

  399. grocery store.

  400. We are going

  401. to get

  402. pressed more

  403. and more

  404. and more

  405. by this

  406. society to

  407. toe a line

  408. that if we're

  409. to be biblical

  410. Christians,

  411. we will not

  412. be able to

  413. toe.

  414. It just

  415. won't be

  416. possible to

  417. do so.

  418. If we are

  419. to be a

  420. people who

  421. have been

  422. awakened by

  423. the gospel

  424. of Jesus

  425. Christ,

  426. then we're

  427. going to need

  428. to look

  429. carefully how

  430. we walk.

  431. We're going

  432. to be wise,

  433. verse 15.

  434. We're going

  435. to need

  436. to make

  437. the best

  438. use of

  439. the time.

  440. Why?

  441. Because the

  442. days are

  443. evil.

  444. We ought

  445. not be

  446. foolish.

  447. We need

  448. to understand

  449. the way

  450. of our

  451. Lord.

  452. We ought

  453. to be wise

  454. and unfoolish

  455. because God

  456. has saved

  457. us from

  458. our foolishness.

  459. Verse 13,

  460. when anything

  461. is exposed

  462. by the light,

  463. it becomes

  464. visible.

  465. For anything

  466. that becomes

  467. visible is

  468. light.

  469. Therefore,

  470. it says,

  471. Awake,

  472. O sleeper,

  473. and arise

  474. from the

  475. dead,

  476. and Christ

  477. will shine

  478. on you.

  479. And this

  480. is a

  481. citation

  482. from Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  483. chapter 60

  484. and verse

  485. 1,

  486. loosely,

  487. which says,

  488. Arise,

  489. shine,

  490. for your

  491. light has

  492. come,

  493. and the

  494. glory of

  495. the Lord

  496. has risen

  497. upon you.

  498. Now,

  499. this citation

  500. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:14

  501. chapter 5,

  502. verse 14,

  503. many commentators

  504. believe,

  505. was a hymn sung

  506. by the early

  507. church calling

  508. anyone in their

  509. midst who had

  510. not yet believed

  511. in Christ to

  512. repent and

  513. place their

  514. faith in him.

  515. Because it's a

  516. gospel summary.

  517. Awake,

  518. O sleeper,

  519. you who are

  520. dead in your

  521. sin,

  522. who have yet

  523. to be awakened

  524. to the light

  525. of Christ.

  526. Arise from

  527. the dead

  528. through repentance

  529. and faith.

  530. And God's

  531. grace in

  532. Christ will

  533. shine

  534. on you.

  535. Because God

  536. has saved us

  537. from our

  538. foolishness,

  539. we are to be

  540. a people who

  541. pursue

  542. that which is

  543. good

  544. and true

  545. and beautiful.

  546. and we are

  547. to do so

  548. for our

  549. good,

  550. loving,

  551. kind

  552. instructions

  553. from our

  554. God and

  555. for the

  556. glory

  557. of our

  558. God.

  559. And this is

  560. going to

  561. cause

  562. discomfort.

  563. This is going

  564. to cause

  565. persecution.

  566. persecution.

  567. I have

  568. wrongly said

  569. in the past

  570. that the

  571. church has

  572. always thrived

  573. in the midst

  574. of persecution.

  575. And broadly

  576. that's true,

  577. right?

  578. Capital C

  579. church,

  580. the church

  581. has always

  582. pressed on

  583. throughout

  584. space and

  585. time.

  586. But in

  587. particular

  588. locations,

  589. that hasn't

  590. always been

  591. true.

  592. There have

  593. been places

  594. in history,

  595. in the world,

  596. that persecution

  597. has altogether

  598. stamped out

  599. the Christian

  600. witness.

  601. We want

  602. this to

  603. not be

  604. true of

  605. us.

  606. We want

  607. rather

  608. what Thomas

  609. Watson

  610. once said,

  611. this is on

  612. your bulletin,

  613. this is what

  614. we want to

  615. be true of

  616. us.

  617. He said,

  618. how much

  619. good comes

  620. to the

  621. saints

  622. by affliction.

  623. When they

  624. are pounded,

  625. they send

  626. forth their

  627. sweetest

  628. smell.

  629. Affliction

  630. is a

  631. bitter root,

  632. but it

  633. bears

  634. sweet fruit.

  635. we want

  636. this to

  637. be true

  638. of us,

  639. of Christ's

  640. family

  641. church.

  642. So how

  643. do we

  644. build a

  645. resilient

  646. church

  647. culture,

  648. a church

  649. that will

  650. stand against

  651. the rising

  652. tide of

  653. soft

  654. totalitarianism?

  655. And to

  656. be clear,

  657. we will

  658. have to

  659. build it.

  660. It won't

  661. just happen.

  662. We will

  663. have to

  664. be strong

  665. because the

  666. tide will

  667. be destructive.

  668. It will

  669. have to

  670. be cultural,

  671. not to

  672. be ingrained

  673. into who

  674. we are

  675. as a

  676. church.

  677. Not a

  678. six-week

  679. series and

  680. we all

  681. move on,

  682. but we

  683. have to

  684. be thinking

  685. about these

  686. things

  687. together.

  688. And so I

  689. want to

  690. briefly outline

  691. for you

  692. five overlapping

  693. areas that

  694. we believe

  695. we will

  696. need to

  697. work on.

  698. This is

  699. probably not

  700. all of

  701. it.

  702. Much of

  703. this could

  704. be exhausted

  705. more,

  706. it could

  707. be worked

  708. out,

  709. it could

  710. be talked

  711. about,

  712. but I

  713. think this

  714. is a very

  715. good place

  716. for us

  717. to start.

  718. Before I

  719. get into

  720. them,

  721. as a

  722. note,

  723. it's already

  724. been pointed

  725. out to me

  726. that there's

  727. an acronym

  728. here,

  729. CRASH,

  730. and that's

  731. not on

  732. purpose.

  733. Although in

  734. thinking these

  735. things through

  736. and having

  737. these particular

  738. points,

  739. I did notice

  740. that they

  741. spelled out

  742. CRASH,

  743. and I put

  744. it in that

  745. order because

  746. it helps

  747. me remember

  748. it,

  749. and I've

  750. been talking

  751. about this

  752. now for

  753. a year.

  754. So that's

  755. the order

  756. that I put

  757. them in,

  758. but I don't

  759. know that they

  760. necessarily need

  761. to build in

  762. this order,

  763. and I'm

  764. not trying,

  765. you know,

  766. I mean,

  767. somebody probably

  768. would have had

  769. some cool

  770. graphic made,

  771. but that's

  772. not me.

  773. So,

  774. number one,

  775. and we'll

  776. take these in

  777. the coming

  778. weeks in this

  779. order as well.

  780. So,

  781. number one,

  782. clear mission.

  783. The church

  784. needs to know

  785. why it

  786. exists.

  787. What is the

  788. church,

  789. and what is

  790. the mission

  791. meaning of

  792. the church?

  793. If we are

  794. not crystal

  795. clear on

  796. why we

  797. exist,

  798. then we

  799. will always

  800. be distracted

  801. by some

  802. lesser

  803. purpose.

  804. Perhaps by

  805. a gospel

  806. implication,

  807. but not the

  808. gospel itself.

  809. Why does

  810. the church

  811. exist?

  812. What Jesus

  813. said in

  814. Matthew

    Matthew 28:18

  815. chapter 28,

  816. verse 18,

  817. and following,

  818. all authority

  819. in heaven

  820. and on

  821. earth has

  822. been given

  823. to me.

  824. Go,

  825. therefore,

  826. and make

  827. disciples of

  828. all nations,

  829. baptizing them,

  830. this is how I

  831. know that this

  832. is a work of

  833. the church,

  834. because that's

  835. a church

  836. ordinance,

  837. baptizing them

  838. in the name

  839. of the Father

  840. and of the

  841. Son and

  842. of the Holy

  843. Spirit,

  844. teaching them

  845. to observe

  846. all that I

  847. have commanded

  848. you.

  849. And behold,

  850. I am with

  851. you always

  852. to the end

  853. of the age.

  854. I'm going

  855. to develop

  856. this next

  857. week more.

  858. Why does

  859. the church

  860. exist?

  861. To be

  862. heralds of

  863. the good

  864. news of

  865. Jesus Christ.

  866. We attach

  867. some things

  868. to that

  869. as we carry

  870. that message

  871. forth,

  872. but this

  873. is the

  874. thing we

  875. need to

  876. stay clear

  877. about.

  878. We have

  879. a mission

  880. in this

  881. world.

  882. We will

  883. need to

  884. readily identify

  885. what battles

  886. we ought to

  887. engage in

  888. and what

  889. the war

  890. is that

  891. we cannot

  892. avoid.

  893. We need

  894. to understand

  895. what it

  896. means to

  897. be the

  898. church

  899. militant,

  900. and the

  901. church

  902. victorious.

  903. So that's

  904. number one,

  905. clear mission.

  906. Number two,

  907. robust

  908. theology.

  909. If we

  910. do not

  911. have a

  912. robust,

  913. think a

  914. well-developed,

  915. a thick

  916. theology,

  917. we will

  918. fail to

  919. understand

  920. cosmology,

  921. anthology,

  922. and certainly

  923. even

  924. biology.

  925. theology.

  926. All other

  927. studies are

  928. subservient to

  929. the study

  930. of God.

  931. Proverbs 1

  932. and verse 7,

  933. the fear of

  934. the Lord is

  935. the beginning

  936. of knowledge.

  937. Fools despise

  938. wisdom and

  939. instruction.

  940. We must

  941. humble

  942. ourselves under

  943. God's

  944. word,

  945. and we must

  946. be a people

  947. of it.

  948. We have to

  949. be thick

  950. in our

  951. theology.

  952. In a

  953. highly

  954. psychologized

  955. age,

  956. we are

  957. being

  958. inundated

  959. with the

  960. message that

  961. we are the

  962. center of

  963. the universe

  964. and that

  965. our feelings

  966. dictate

  967. our reality.

  968. Feelings

  969. seem to

  970. rule the

  971. day.

  972. And beloved,

  973. I will tell

  974. you, this

  975. is true in

  976. our church

  977. as well.

  978. Your feelings

  979. may or may

  980. not be

  981. consistent

  982. with the

  983. truth.

  984. But your

  985. feelings never

  986. define the

  987. truth.

  988. God defines

  989. the truth.

  990. But we live

  991. in a culture

  992. that is

  993. telling us

  994. that opposite

  995. thing all

  996. the time.

  997. Define your

  998. truth.

  999. What's good

  1000. for you

  1001. must be

  1002. good.

  1003. But our

  1004. creator knows

  1005. what's good,

  1006. what's best

  1007. for us.

  1008. Many

  1009. churches

  1010. peddle what

  1011. sociologists

  1012. Christian Smith

  1013. and Melinda

  1014. Lundquist

  1015. Denton called

  1016. therapeutic,

  1017. moralistic

  1018. deism.

  1019. And this

  1020. is not

  1021. good for

  1022. the souls

  1023. of mankind.

  1024. We do

  1025. not need

  1026. a high

  1027. view of

  1028. man.

  1029. We need

  1030. a high

  1031. view of

  1032. God.

  1033. We are

  1034. going to

  1035. have to

  1036. learn to

  1037. do

  1038. theological

  1039. triage

  1040. on the

  1041. fly.

  1042. I'm not

  1043. going to

  1044. explain

  1045. theological

  1046. triage to

  1047. you this

  1048. morning.

  1049. There's

  1050. people in the

  1051. room going,

  1052. okay,

  1053. good.

  1054. Good.

  1055. But you

  1056. need to know

  1057. how to do

  1058. it, right?

  1059. We need to

  1060. know what

  1061. to encounter,

  1062. what not

  1063. to encounter,

  1064. what battles

  1065. to fight,

  1066. what hills

  1067. we ought to

  1068. die on,

  1069. and what

  1070. things don't

  1071. matter.

  1072. It's part

  1073. of developing

  1074. a robust

  1075. theology.

  1076. We're going

  1077. to need to

  1078. develop the

  1079. ability to

  1080. hold and

  1081. communicate

  1082. nuanced

  1083. positions.

  1084. We don't

  1085. need to be

  1086. the kind

  1087. of people

  1088. that try

  1089. to sort

  1090. out the

  1091. world's

  1092. problems

  1093. in 240

  1094. characters

  1095. on Twitter.

  1096. So,

  1097. clear mission,

  1098. robust

  1099. theology.

  1100. Third,

  1101. accurate

  1102. histories.

  1103. I must

  1104. admit that

  1105. accurate

  1106. was the

  1107. A.

  1108. I actually

  1109. put it in

  1110. there because

  1111. it made

  1112. crash.

  1113. Accurate

  1114. histories.

  1115. If we

  1116. do not

  1117. understand

  1118. where we

  1119. have come

  1120. from,

  1121. we will

  1122. not see

  1123. clearly

  1124. where we

  1125. are going

  1126. and we

  1127. will be

  1128. doomed to

  1129. repeat the

  1130. mistakes

  1131. of the

  1132. past.

  1133. We're

  1134. going to

  1135. have to

  1136. be a

  1137. people

  1138. who have

  1139. knowledge

  1140. of our

  1141. history,

  1142. local,

  1143. national,

  1144. world,

  1145. most

  1146. particularly

  1147. church

  1148. history.

  1149. Who are

  1150. we as

  1151. God's

  1152. people?

  1153. What

  1154. mistakes

  1155. have

  1156. God's

  1157. people

  1158. made

  1159. in

  1160. the

  1161. past?

  1162. I'll

  1163. tell you

  1164. right now,

  1165. we have

  1166. such a

  1167. place to

  1168. observe

  1169. soft

  1170. totalitarianism

  1171. at play

  1172. in Europe

  1173. and what's

  1174. happening to

  1175. the church

  1176. there.

  1177. Churches

  1178. that are

  1179. thriving

  1180. there,

  1181. how have

  1182. they stood

  1183. against

  1184. that tide

  1185. and those

  1186. that haven't,

  1187. how have

  1188. they failed

  1189. to do

  1190. so?

  1191. We have

  1192. much to

  1193. observe

  1194. and much

  1195. to learn

  1196. about this.

  1197. And I

  1198. will say,

  1199. as Baptists,

  1200. we need to

  1201. especially pay

  1202. attention to

  1203. Baptist church

  1204. history.

  1205. We need to

  1206. be steeped

  1207. in it.

  1208. Now,

  1209. less than

  1210. the other

  1211. things,

  1212. you may not

  1213. have to

  1214. participate in

  1215. this quite

  1216. as much,

  1217. but we'll

  1218. work to

  1219. do it

  1220. for you.

  1221. We'll

  1222. work to

  1223. bring these

  1224. things together

  1225. for you and

  1226. help you to

  1227. understand the

  1228. mistakes of the

  1229. past that we

  1230. might be better

  1231. in the future.

  1232. So,

  1233. clear mission,

  1234. robust theology,

  1235. accurate histories,

  1236. fourth,

  1237. sacrificial

  1238. hospitality.

  1239. If we do

  1240. not love

  1241. one another

  1242. as we

  1243. should,

  1244. and if we

  1245. do not

  1246. love our

  1247. neighbors as

  1248. we should,

  1249. then we

  1250. will not

  1251. have a

  1252. foundation

  1253. from which

  1254. to say

  1255. difficult

  1256. things

  1257. into a

  1258. confused

  1259. culture.

  1260. It's

  1261. important

  1262. that we

  1263. build

  1264. equity

  1265. with

  1266. people

  1267. as we

  1268. bring

  1269. correction

  1270. to

  1271. people.

  1272. John

  1273. 13,

  1274. 35,

  1275. Jesus

  1276. says,

  1277. by this

  1278. all people

  1279. will know

  1280. that you

  1281. are my

  1282. disciples.

  1283. If you

  1284. love to

  1285. debate

  1286. reform

  1287. theology,

  1288. if you

  1289. have love

  1290. for one

  1291. another,

  1292. the way

  1293. we love

  1294. one another

  1295. is a

  1296. witness

  1297. to the

  1298. world

  1299. around

  1300. us.

  1301. Jesus

  1302. said,

  1303. Matthew

    Matthew 5:43

  1304. 5,

  1305. verse 43

  1306. and following,

  1307. you have

  1308. heard that

  1309. it was

  1310. said,

  1311. you shall

  1312. love your

  1313. neighbor

  1314. and hate

  1315. your

  1316. enemy.

  1317. But I

  1318. say to

  1319. you,

  1320. love your

  1321. enemies

  1322. and pray

  1323. for those

  1324. who persecute

  1325. you.

  1326. For God's

  1327. church to

  1328. stand in

  1329. this age

  1330. of people

  1331. who will

  1332. hate us,

  1333. our response

  1334. is going to

  1335. have to be

  1336. a response

  1337. of love.

  1338. And we

  1339. have to

  1340. show that

  1341. to people

  1342. through

  1343. sacrificial

  1344. hospitality.

  1345. It means it

  1346. requires something

  1347. of us.

  1348. We have to

  1349. give something

  1350. to make it

  1351. possible.

  1352. We have to

  1353. be uncomfortable

  1354. at times.

  1355. We have to

  1356. give of our

  1357. resources to

  1358. have people

  1359. feel welcome.

  1360. And this

  1361. word

  1362. hospitality

  1363. means a

  1364. welcome

  1365. to the

  1366. stranger.

  1367. We have to

  1368. do this

  1369. amongst

  1370. ourselves,

  1371. that we

  1372. know we

  1373. have a

  1374. people,

  1375. a place

  1376. that we

  1377. belong,

  1378. and we're

  1379. going to

  1380. have to

  1381. do this

  1382. to others

  1383. as well.

  1384. If the

  1385. church is

  1386. to survive

  1387. in a

  1388. secularizing

  1389. age,

  1390. we're going

  1391. to have

  1392. to show

  1393. sacrificial

  1394. hospitality.

  1395. Clear

  1396. mission,

  1397. robust

  1398. theology,

  1399. accurate

  1400. histories,

  1401. sacrificial

  1402. hospitality.

  1403. See,

  1404. I don't

  1405. know if I

  1406. could do

  1407. this if

  1408. it

  1409. wasn't in

  1410. an acronym

  1411. that spelled

  1412. crash.

  1413. Fifth,

  1414. healthy

  1415. family.

  1416. If we

  1417. do not

  1418. have

  1419. healthy

  1420. families,

  1421. then our

  1422. church will

  1423. not hold

  1424. together,

  1425. because the

  1426. family is

  1427. the first

  1428. and foundational

  1429. institution of

  1430. all societies.

  1431. This is why

  1432. the evil

  1433. one is so

  1434. bent on

  1435. destroying

  1436. families.

  1437. Think about

  1438. the direction

  1439. from which

  1440. attacks on

  1441. the church

  1442. most readily

  1443. come in

  1444. our day.

  1445. In almost

  1446. all cases,

  1447. it's the

  1448. family.

  1449. We need

  1450. to have

  1451. healthy

  1452. biological

  1453. families.

  1454. We need

  1455. to have

  1456. healthy

  1457. adoptive

  1458. families,

  1459. both formally

  1460. and informally,

  1461. that we

  1462. would pull

  1463. people into

  1464. our family

  1465. life in

  1466. informal

  1467. ways and

  1468. also

  1469. officially,

  1470. formally,

  1471. be an

  1472. adoptive

  1473. culture.

  1474. So these

  1475. things are

  1476. things we

  1477. need to be

  1478. thinking about

  1479. and talking

  1480. about,

  1481. and we're

  1482. going to do

  1483. that over

  1484. the next

  1485. five weeks,

  1486. Lord willing,

  1487. that we

  1488. would have

  1489. as a

  1490. church,

  1491. clear

  1492. mission,

  1493. robust

  1494. theology,

  1495. accurate

  1496. histories,

  1497. sacrificial

  1498. hospitality,

  1499. and healthy

  1500. families.

  1501. It is our

  1502. prayer that

  1503. we will be

  1504. a resilient

  1505. church culture

  1506. and that we

  1507. will stand

  1508. against the

  1509. rising tide

  1510. of the

  1511. soft

  1512. totalitarianism

  1513. of our

  1514. evil age,

  1515. and that we

  1516. will do

  1517. so for

  1518. our good

  1519. and for

  1520. the glory

  1521. of God.

  1522. So in

  1523. closing,

  1524. let me read

  1525. today's text

  1526. one more

  1527. time and

  1528. ask that you

  1529. consider how

  1530. you might

  1531. be wise,

  1532. perhaps with

  1533. us in

  1534. our evil

  1535. days.

  1536. And then I'll

  1537. pray.

  1538. Take no part

  1539. in the

  1540. unfruitful works

  1541. of darkness,

  1542. but instead

  1543. expose them.

  1544. For it is

  1545. shameful even to

  1546. speak of the

  1547. things that they

  1548. do in secret.

  1549. But when

  1550. anything is

  1551. exposed by the

  1552. light, it

  1553. becomes visible.

  1554. for anything

  1555. that becomes

  1556. visible is

  1557. light.

  1558. Therefore it

  1559. says, awake,

  1560. O sleeper, and

  1561. arise from the

  1562. dead, and

  1563. Christ will

  1564. shine on

  1565. you.

  1566. Look carefully

  1567. then how you

  1568. walk, not as

  1569. unwise, but as

  1570. wise, making the

  1571. best use of the

  1572. time, because the

  1573. days are evil.

  1574. Therefore do not

  1575. be foolish, but

  1576. understand what the

  1577. will of the Lord

  1578. is.

  1579. Let's pray

  1580. together.

  1581. Thank you.
