  1. Well, good morning. I hope you have a copy of God's Word with you today.

  2. If you do, please join me in 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  3. Two weeks ago now, I began preaching a series of sermons, which is not a thing we do normatively here, expressing our need to build a resilient church culture.

  4. The first week was an overview, at which time I made the case that we live in days of growing, soft totalitarianism, particularly concerning anthropology, how we came to be, why we exist, etc.

  5. This is largely a problem concerning the very definition of mankind, and it is making inroads into our culture at a sweeping pace.

  6. I think perhaps you all know already what I've been talking about.

  7. There's going to be a pressure felt against Orthodox Christianity already being felt, but being felt in greater measure than I believe ever before in this country.

  8. If you haven't heard the past two sermons, I think you'll be well helped by listening to their recordings.

  9. For the sake of time, I can't rebuild each case as we're doing this.

  10. You should be able to find those on the website.

  11. But each week, I've begun with three prerequisite statements.

  12. Of course, I could say that correctly, prerequisite statements.

  13. And I think that they bear repeating once again.

  14. So I'm going to do these three things quickly before we get to the topic for today.

  15. Number one, as a general practice, we preach expositional sermons.

  16. Most simply put, this means that we take for the sermons point or points the main point or points of that week's text.

  17. We typically preach verse-by-verse exposition.

  18. And I'm looking forward in the fall to get started on the book of Romans with you.

  19. We want to be especially careful not to read into a text what we want the text to say.

  20. This is called eisegesis, right?

  21. We want to exegete the text.

  22. Many errors have arisen through the practice of eisegesis.

  23. And so, with that in mind, as we think about a text and we think about it topically,

  24. I just want to warn you to be especially discerning.

  25. Secondly, I am not trying to be an alarmist.

  26. But there are times in which we need to be thinking carefully and looking forward well.

  27. And because of this, your elders feel a burden to prepare you for challenges that we believe are coming.

  28. We love you very much.

  29. We want to teach you well from God's Word for your good and for the glory of our God.

  30. And to be frank, if we're entirely wrong,

  31. all the things that we're going to be talking about are just good and proper things for the church to be doing anyway.

  32. So, we'll be okay.

  33. Third, the six total weeks we're going to be spending thinking about building a resilient church culture

  34. will not be enough time to exhaust the topic.

  35. Nor will each week be enough time for the particular thing that we're talking about.

  36. I feel that like I want, you know, three times as many pages of notes as I presently have.

  37. But I hope that it will prime us and get us talking and thinking.

  38. We're going to need to do so both formally and informally, day to day.

  39. And above all, we would ask that you would spend time with the Lord and His Word as you consider the days in which we live.

  40. So, how do we build a resilient church culture, right?

  41. A church that is going to stand against the rising tide of this soft totalitarianism, right?

  42. A requirement to toe the cultural line.

  43. We're going to have to build it, right?

  44. It's not going to just happen, right?

  45. It will be spirit-empowered if it's valuable at all.

  46. But we're going to have to do some things in order for it to happen.

  47. We will have to be strong, right?

  48. Because the tide, the cultural tide, it will be destructive.

  49. And it will have to be cultural.

  50. It's going to have to be ingrained into every part of who we are as a people set apart for God's praise.

  51. So, this morning we're going to consider the second of five things your elders believe we need to be working on.

  52. The first was clear mission.

  53. The second, robust theology.

  54. The third, accurate history.

  55. The fourth, sacrificial hospitality.

  56. And the fifth, healthy family.

  57. Today, we're going to consider robust theology.

  58. Now, many people, when they hear the word theology, think, oh, that's for the theologians, right?

  59. That is for the high-minded in places of academia.

  60. But theology is merely the study of God, of our Creator.

  61. If we are to rightly answer the questions, how were we created?

  62. For what purpose were we created?

  63. How ought our lives to be ordered?

  64. If we're looking for any meaning or purpose at all, then we're going to have to do so theologically.

  65. Even the atheist makes a theological statement in declaring there is no God.

  66. That is a form of theology.

  67. Not only will we need to be theological to stand against the rising tide of soft totalitarianism,

  68. but we will have to do theology robustly.

  69. We're going to have to do it well.

  70. Our theology will need to be strong, and it will need to be healthy.

  71. It will need to be altogether biblical.

  72. We will need to know what we believe, why we believe it,

  73. and be able to recognize attacks at the very core of our Christian faith.

  74. So, let's begin this morning with our text.

  75. 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  76. I'm going to read the entirety of chapter 3 and into verse 5 of chapter 4.

  77. Let me remind you that the subheadings and the verse numbers and the chapter numbers are not inspired.

  78. They're very helpful to us, right?

  79. We all arrived at the same point in our English text by saying chapter 3, verse 1, but not inspired.

  80. And I want you to see the flow of Paul's reasoning here to his disciple Timothy.

  81. Before I begin reading, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  82. It was written for his glory and our good, and so we would do well to approach it with reverence,

  83. to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  84. 2 Timothy 3, verse 1 and following.

    2 Timothy 3:1

  85. But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.

  86. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents,

  87. ungrateful, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control,

  88. brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit,

  89. lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

  90. having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.

  91. Avoid such people.

  92. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women,

  93. burdened with sins and led astray by various passions,

  94. always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

  95. Just as Janice and John Brace opposed Moses, so these men also opposed the truth,

  96. men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.

  97. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

  98. You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love,

  99. my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra,

  100. which persecutions I endured, yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

  101. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  102. while evil people and imposters will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  103. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  104. knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  105. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  106. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,

  107. and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  108. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead,

  109. and by his appearing and his kingdom, preach the word.

  110. Be ready in season and out of season.

  111. Reprove, rebuke, and exhort with complete patience and teaching.

  112. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching,

  113. but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,

  114. and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

  115. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering,

  116. do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

  117. So, this is known as Paul's last epistle, the last letter that he wrote.

  118. He's on his deathbed, he's anticipating his soon coming end,

  119. and he's issuing these final words to Timothy, who is serving as a pastor,

  120. but that doesn't mean that the words here only apply to Timothy and his particular ministry.

  121. Notice that he says that this time is here and it is coming.

  122. Timothy himself experienced this and the practical application that he needed in his day,

  123. and we also need to consider it.

  124. So, to do so, we're going to do it in a two-point simple outline,

  125. which is as follows.

  126. Number one, two exhortations,

  127. and number two, three reasons for the two exhortations.

  128. We've got all those numbers.

  129. Number one, two exhortations.

  130. Number two, three reasons for the two exhortations.

  131. We won't look at this text exhaustively.

  132. Remember, I'm driving to a point, right?

  133. Trying carefully to exegete, not eisegete.

  134. Be discerning.

  135. We can't pick up every little detail that's found in this long bit of text.

  136. But I want to draw your attention first to two exhortations.

  137. So, number one, continue.

  138. Paul is urging Timothy, right?

  139. That's what it means to exhort.

  140. He's urging him to continue, right?

  141. In something specific, right?

  142. He says, but as for you, right?

  143. In contrast to these type of men,

  144. you continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed.

  145. Paul tells Timothy that there will be difficulty in the last days

  146. because of ungodly people.

  147. And his response to that is to instruct Timothy

  148. not to withdraw from society or abandon his work to start a new one,

  149. but to continue, right?

  150. To settle in, to keep moving forward.

  151. It's what many of the Puritans called plotting, right?

  152. Stay on the path.

  153. Just keep going.

  154. Continue.

  155. Timothy is told, right, to continue in what he had learned and believed,

  156. which we see as Paul continues is the Word of God.

  157. In verse 15, Paul calls this the sacred writings,

  158. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  159. It says that he was familiar with them from a child, right?

  160. We know that his mother and his grandmothers were followers of Christ

  161. and taught him the Old Testament text that he might come to faith in Christ.

  162. And then in verse 16, we see Paul call this the Scripture,

  163. who has God as its very source, right?

  164. Breathed out, expired by God himself.

  165. If we are to continue, then we are going to have to continue by God's Word,

  166. which means we're going to have to study God's Word, right?

  167. We will need to know the sacred writings.

  168. And beloved, we live in a tragic day of biblical illiteracy.

  169. Too many people who claim to be a people of the book do not know the book they claim to be a people of.

  170. This is our text, and we ought to know it much more than we presently do.

  171. We will need to do robust theology.

  172. Not merely to know things, right?

  173. Not to be high-minded, not to be academic.

  174. This is not the great end of reading the Scripture,

  175. but rather to know personally our God.

  176. To know his purposes in the world,

  177. and know how we are to walk in his will.

  178. This is the end, the practical application of the knowledge of our God.

  179. And it will take work on your part.

  180. In a survey released by Lifeway Research,

  181. showed that evangelical Christians, only 36% say that they read their Bibles daily.

  182. What a shame.

  183. What an absolute shame.

  184. It's going to take work on your part.

  185. But it is also a community project.

  186. So if you will, listen.

  187. Ephesians chapter 4, beginning in verse 11.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  188. Jesus gives to the church apostles, prophets,

  189. which I'll argue is the Scripture.

  190. But for another time.

  191. The evangelists, the shepherd teachers,

  192. to do something specific,

  193. to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  194. for building up the body of Christ.

  195. Right?

  196. So there's gifts given to the church

  197. to equip the saints, all of us,

  198. for the work of ministry,

  199. which is what?

  200. It's building up the body of Christ.

  201. And we're to do this work,

  202. verse 13 tells us,

  203. until we all attain to the unity of the faith

  204. and of the knowledge of the Son of God

  205. to mature manhood,

  206. to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  207. Which means that this work will not be done this side of glory.

  208. Right?

  209. We're going to have to do robust theology

  210. until the Lord returns

  211. or takes us home.

  212. Right?

  213. One of the two.

  214. And it has a point,

  215. verse 14 of Ephesians 11 tells us,

  216. so that

  217. we may no longer be children

  218. tossed to and fro by the waves

  219. and carried about by every wind of doctrine.

  220. And doctrine just is a great word for truth.

  221. By human cunning,

  222. by craftiness

  223. and deceitful schemes.

  224. So how will we stand

  225. against the tide of soft totalitarianism

  226. against all the ideas

  227. that are out there in the world

  228. that are assaulting the church?

  229. We will do so

  230. by doing robust theology

  231. and doing it together in community.

  232. Speaking the truth to one another.

  233. This takes all kinds of forms.

  234. Right?

  235. As the clear mission of the church

  236. is to make disciples,

  237. we do this in big and public ways

  238. and we do this in small and private ways

  239. to press on together in the truth.

  240. To continue.

  241. In what we have learned

  242. and firmly believe.

  243. Right?

  244. The scripture itself.

  245. That's the first thing

  246. Paul is exhorting Timothy to do

  247. is to continue.

  248. But secondly,

  249. he exhorts him to preach.

  250. Chapter 4 and verse 2.

  251. He says,

  252. preach the word.

  253. Not only is Timothy exhorted

  254. to continue in what he has learned,

  255. but he is also exhorted

  256. to proclaim the word to others.

  257. To declare it to others.

  258. And I want to say to you

  259. that this is preaching,

  260. but you are also meant to preach.

  261. You are meant to proclaim the truth

  262. to others.

  263. Right?

  264. See Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  265. Timothy is told in this text

  266. that there will be difficulty

  267. and he is to respond

  268. to that difficulty

  269. by continuing in the truth

  270. and by proclaiming the truth.

  271. He is told to reprove,

  272. rebuke,

  273. and exhort.

  274. Or,

  275. if you prefer,

  276. correct,

  277. warn,

  278. and urge others.

  279. And to do this

  280. all the time.

  281. And to do this

  282. with patience

  283. and with careful instruction.

  284. Speaking the truth

  285. to one another

  286. has to be

  287. and has to continue to be

  288. and grow in measure

  289. built into who we are

  290. as a people.

  291. Always helping,

  292. always directing.

  293. We have to,

  294. as a church,

  295. have a louder voice

  296. than the culture's voice.

  297. Right?

  298. For what the truth is

  299. and what it is

  300. not.

  301. The second main point,

  302. let's look and see

  303. the reasons

  304. for these exhortations.

  305. Number one,

  306. three reasons

  307. for two exhortations.

  308. Number one,

  309. to avoid

  310. licentiousness

  311. and

  312. legalism.

  313. Right?

  314. Bear with me.

  315. If we are

  316. off the mark

  317. of how we are meant

  318. to respond to the truth

  319. as gospel people,

  320. it will be one in two ways.

  321. We'll either become

  322. licentious,

  323. right?

  324. We'll take for granted

  325. the grace of God

  326. and we'll throw off the law

  327. and we'll think

  328. that we can live

  329. however we'd like to live

  330. in response to God's grace.

  331. Right?

  332. God has forgiven me

  333. of my sin,

  334. therefore I can sin abundantly.

  335. Paul says,

  336. may it never be.

  337. The other temptation

  338. is to trend off

  339. toward legalism.

  340. Right?

  341. To think that

  342. we can earn our favor

  343. and what we seek

  344. is for other people

  345. to look like us

  346. and not like Christ.

  347. Right?

  348. To add to the law

  349. in particular ways

  350. and demand the same

  351. from others.

  352. So,

  353. walking

  354. in gospel response,

  355. obedient lives

  356. is like walking

  357. a tightrope

  358. and there's always

  359. two ways

  360. to fall off.

  361. Look at chapter 3

  362. and verse 2,

  363. 2 Timothy.

  364. I won't read

  365. the whole list

  366. but you'll see

  367. people will be

  368. lovers of self,

  369. lovers of money,

  370. proud,

  371. arrogant,

  372. abusive,

  373. disobedient

  374. to their parent,

  375. jump down

  376. without self-control,

  377. treacherous,

  378. reckless,

  379. lovers of pleasure

  380. rather than

  381. lovers of God.

  382. So,

  383. you see all of this

  384. licentiousness

  385. in the text

  386. and then you see

  387. hints of legalism

  388. as well,

  389. them being proud

  390. and arrogant,

  391. having the appearance

  392. of godliness

  393. but denying

  394. its power.

  395. And these are people

  396. who are part of

  397. this fellowship

  398. of faith,

  399. right?

  400. they're to be

  401. found out,

  402. they're to be

  403. discovered,

  404. they're to be

  405. avoided.

  406. This is not just

  407. the culture

  408. at war here

  409. but the culture

  410. infiltrating within

  411. God's very people.

  412. Down through verse 7

  413. and Paul elaborates

  414. further but I think

  415. you can see the point.

  416. There is a promise

  417. of wicked people.

  418. They will be

  419. around us

  420. and within us.

  421. and because of this

  422. there's also a promise

  423. of persecution

  424. for the faithful.

  425. This verse is the

  426. hammer blow

  427. to the prosperity gospel.

  428. This verse,

  429. most who believe

  430. the prosperity gospel

  431. and see that what God

  432. is seeking to accomplish

  433. for us here

  434. is the avoidance

  435. of suffering,

  436. they have never heard.

  437. And I challenge you

  438. with this.

  439. When you meet somebody

  440. who's been at

  441. prosperity gospel churches

  442. ask them,

  443. have you ever heard

  444. 2 Timothy 3, 12?

  445. This doesn't preach

  446. in a prosperity church.

  447. Indeed,

  448. all who desire

  449. to live a godly life

  450. in Christ Jesus

  451. will be

  452. persecuted.

  453. It will happen.

  454. It is inevitable

  455. that the world

  456. is going to push back.

  457. Ungodliness pushes back

  458. against godliness.

  459. We are disciples

  460. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  461. Why do we think

  462. that our path

  463. will look any different

  464. than His?

  465. Hated in this world,

  466. suffered and died

  467. for our sake.

  468. Why would we think

  469. that this world

  470. will love us

  471. and accept us

  472. for all that we have

  473. to offer?

  474. It will not.

  475. Those who desire

  476. to live a godly life

  477. in Christ Jesus

  478. will be persecuted.

  479. And it's on the heels

  480. of this

  481. that He then says

  482. to Timothy

  483. in verse 14,

  484. but as for you,

  485. this will happen.

  486. It will be going on,

  487. but as for you,

  488. continue

  489. in what you have learned

  490. and firmly believed.

  491. We must be careful

  492. not to believe

  493. that we have

  494. already arrived.

  495. We still may be tossed

  496. to and fro

  497. by the wind.

  498. We're going to have

  499. to press in

  500. and continue on

  501. because we want

  502. to avoid

  503. licentiousness

  504. and we want

  505. to avoid

  506. legalism.

  507. Right?

  508. We are susceptible

  509. to such errors.

  510. Listen for a moment

  511. to Paul's farewell words

  512. to the Ephesian elders

  513. recorded for us

  514. in Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20:28

  515. verse 28 and following.

  516. He says this

  517. and this is just,

  518. this strikes me,

  519. especially as an elder,

  520. as a warning

  521. for me

  522. and for all of us.

  523. He says,

  524. pay careful attention

  525. to yourselves

  526. and to all

  527. the flock.

  528. To yourselves

  529. and to the flock

  530. in which the Holy Spirit

  531. has made you overseers

  532. to care for the church

  533. of God

  534. which He obtained

  535. with His own

  536. blood.

  537. I know

  538. that after my departure

  539. fierce wolves

  540. will come in among you

  541. not sparing

  542. the flock.

  543. Okay.

  544. So we're going to

  545. pay attention

  546. to ourselves

  547. and to the flock

  548. because wolves are coming.

  549. Right?

  550. You can see this language

  551. being picked up here

  552. in 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  553. Right?

  554. This type of activity

  555. is going to be happening.

  556. This ungodliness

  557. coming in,

  558. taking people captive.

  559. We must be careful

  560. but then in verse 30

  561. He says,

  562. and from among

  563. your own selves

  564. will arise men

  565. speaking twisted things

  566. to draw away

  567. the disciples

  568. after them.

  569. So both from without

  570. and from within

  571. and so we are

  572. then to be careful,

  573. to pay careful attention

  574. to ourselves

  575. and to the flock.

  576. To avoid licentiousness

  577. and legalism.

  578. The second reason,

  579. the second reason

  580. for these exhortations

  581. is to do the opposite

  582. of that

  583. which is to pursue holiness.

  584. Right?

  585. We want to avoid

  586. sinfulness

  587. but we want to

  588. also pursue

  589. holiness

  590. for the glory

  591. of our God

  592. to be a people

  593. set apart

  594. for His praise

  595. in a dark

  596. and a twisted generation.

  597. Verse 16

  598. is our classic

  599. sufficiency

  600. of Scripture text.

  601. I hope you don't

  602. grow tired of it.

  603. all Scripture

  604. breathed out by God

  605. and profitable.

  606. It comes from Him.

  607. He is its source.

  608. Carrying along

  609. the pens of men,

  610. it is His

  611. word

  612. and it is

  613. profitable.

  614. It is the very thing

  615. we need

  616. to teach,

  617. to reprove,

  618. to correct,

  619. and to train

  620. in righteousness.

  621. In order to pursue holiness,

  622. this is the text.

  623. It is empowered by the Spirit

  624. that we might

  625. live in a way

  626. that is pleasing

  627. to our God.

  628. And verse 17 says

  629. that the man of God

  630. may be

  631. complete

  632. and you can see there

  633. the word proficient

  634. would be another way

  635. to translate that word.

  636. that the man of God

  637. may have all

  638. that he needs

  639. to be equipped

  640. for every

  641. good

  642. work.

  643. Every good work.

  644. There is not a good work

  645. outside of what

  646. this book

  647. instructs us

  648. to do.

  649. The Bible

  650. is the sufficient

  651. source for all things

  652. pertaining

  653. to godliness.

  654. You want to know

  655. how to please our God?

  656. Look to His word.

  657. He has

  658. spoken.

  659. He has

  660. condescended

  661. to become

  662. an author.

  663. And I just want you

  664. to stop

  665. and think about

  666. that for a moment.

  667. In our culture,

  668. to become an author

  669. could make you famous.

  670. God is

  671. infinitely famous

  672. and yet He became

  673. an author

  674. to write us

  675. a book.

  676. A book that we

  677. ought to pay attention to.

  678. We ought to have

  679. our lives

  680. shaped by this book

  681. for our eternal good

  682. and for His

  683. eternal

  684. glory.

  685. So this exhortation

  686. to continue in the word

  687. and to preach the word

  688. or proclaim the word

  689. has this as its

  690. second reason

  691. that order that we

  692. might pursue

  693. holiness.

  694. Third,

  695. we ought to continue

  696. and to proclaim

  697. to help others

  698. pursue

  699. holiness.

  700. Now this

  701. is a way

  702. in my life

  703. that the chapter break

  704. did not serve me well

  705. in my reading of

  706. 2 Timothy.

  707. that I separated

  708. the end of chapter 3

  709. from the beginning

  710. of chapter 4

  711. for a lot of years.

  712. But he flows

  713. right from this

  714. incredible,

  715. incredible words,

  716. right?

  717. The man of God

  718. may be complete,

  719. equipped for

  720. every good work.

  721. And then he says,

  722. I charge you

  723. in the presence of God

  724. and of Christ Jesus

  725. who is to judge

  726. the living

  727. and the dead.

  728. There will be a judgment

  729. that will come.

  730. There's something

  731. to be warned

  732. against.

  733. And by his appearing

  734. in his kingdom,

  735. what?

  736. Preach the word.

  737. Be ready in season

  738. and out of season

  739. all the time.

  740. Reprove,

  741. rebuke,

  742. exhort

  743. with

  744. complete

  745. patience

  746. and teaching.

  747. many of you

  748. know that I am

  749. not in my

  750. natural self

  751. a patient person.

  752. One of my

  753. high values

  754. in my flesh

  755. is efficiency.

  756. I love doing

  757. things efficiently.

  758. And let me tell you,

  759. the church

  760. is not efficient.

  761. It is

  762. anything but

  763. efficient.

  764. So the Lord

  765. has had to do

  766. a lot of work

  767. of grace in me

  768. and is still

  769. completing that work.

  770. The end of

  771. verse 2

  772. knocked me down

  773. when I first saw

  774. the connection here

  775. that we are

  776. to proclaim

  777. the word

  778. to one another

  779. with complete

  780. patience

  781. and teaching

  782. which means

  783. instruction.

  784. And why?

  785. And why?

  786. Why are we

  787. to do this?

  788. Verse 3

  789. and into 4

  790. tells us

  791. 4

  792. the time

  793. is coming

  794. when people

  795. will not endure

  796. sound teaching

  797. but having

  798. itching ears

  799. they will

  800. accumulate for

  801. themselves

  802. teachers to

  803. suit their

  804. own passions

  805. and they will

  806. turn away

  807. from listening

  808. to the truth

  809. and wander

  810. off

  811. into myths.

  812. Beloved,

  813. those who

  814. claim to

  815. follow Christ

  816. will not

  817. endure

  818. Bible teaching

  819. and the

  820. response to

  821. that is

  822. that we

  823. continue

  824. to teach

  825. with complete

  826. patience.

  827. We press on

  828. we keep at it

  829. we keep going

  830. we keep

  831. proclaiming

  832. God's

  833. word.

  834. This blew my

  835. mind open

  836. I don't know

  837. if it does

  838. for you

  839. but as I

  840. have tried

  841. to teach

  842. things

  843. and teach

  844. things

  845. and teach

  846. things

  847. over the

  848. past 13

  849. years

  850. and just

  851. things that

  852. don't seem

  853. to stick

  854. like what

  855. is happening

  856. why is

  857. none of

  858. this

  859. sticking

  860. why are

  861. people not

  862. hearing

  863. these good

  864. exhortations

  865. from the

  866. scripture

  867. right why

  868. is it

  869. not

  870. I'm not

  871. saying you

  872. guys are

  873. all not

  874. enduring

  875. and you

  876. have itching

  877. ears

  878. but it

  879. happens

  880. it happens

  881. in this

  882. fellowship

  883. and the

  884. exhortation

  885. to me

  886. and to

  887. you

  888. is to

  889. keep

  890. at it

  891. just

  892. keep

  893. proclaiming

  894. the truth

  895. just

  896. keep

  897. doing

  898. theology

  899. for the

  900. good of

  901. people

  902. and for

  903. the glory

  904. of God

  905. that we

  906. would help

  907. others

  908. to pursue

  909. holiness

  910. now I

  911. know

  912. broadly

  913. as a

  914. church

  915. we love

  916. theology

  917. what a

  918. good thing

  919. what a

  920. wonderful

  921. thing

  922. you bear

  923. with me

  924. the fact

  925. that you're

  926. even here

  927. means you're

  928. willing to

  929. tolerate

  930. some

  931. theological

  932. presentation

  933. on the

  934. Lord's

  935. day

  936. get up

  937. and some

  938. people have

  939. said I'm

  940. more like a

  941. lecturer

  942. than a

  943. preacher

  944. I don't

  945. know what

  946. to do

  947. with that

  948. I

  949. sometimes

  950. feel like

  951. good

  952. preaching

  953. is a

  954. lecture

  955. but

  956. we're

  957. going to

  958. have to

  959. continue

  960. or we're

  961. going to

  962. have to

  963. press

  964. and we're

  965. going to

  966. have to

  967. see that

  968. each and

  969. every one

  970. of us

  971. plays a

  972. part

  973. in doing

  974. this

  975. well

  976. together

  977. so I'm

  978. going to

  979. cover again

  980. and I'm

  981. going to

  982. do it

  983. in brief

  984. because

  985. it's

  986. already

  987. new

  988. a

  989. concept

  990. called

  991. theological

  992. triage

  993. I'm

  994. going to

  995. do it

  996. quickly

  997. we've

  998. done it

  999. before

  1000. if you

  1001. happen to

  1002. have a

  1003. bulletin

  1004. I just

  1005. quickly put

  1006. notes on

  1007. the back

  1008. for you

  1009. if you

  1010. want to

  1011. scribble

  1012. on the

  1013. back

  1014. of

  1015. that

  1016. I want

  1017. to tell

  1018. you that

  1019. this concept

  1020. is not

  1021. explicitly

  1022. found anywhere

  1023. in the

  1024. Bible

  1025. although

  1026. you could

  1027. argue it

  1028. is

  1029. implicitly

  1030. I

  1031. I think

  1032. the term

  1033. was

  1034. invented

  1035. by

  1036. Albert

  1037. Moeller

  1038. the

  1039. president

  1040. of

  1041. Southern

  1042. Seminary

  1043. but it's

  1044. a practice

  1045. that has

  1046. been

  1047. happening

  1048. and we

  1049. can read

  1050. about it

  1051. throughout

  1052. the history

  1053. of the

  1054. church

  1055. triage

  1056. is the

  1057. assigning

  1058. of

  1059. importance

  1060. right

  1061. we have

  1062. a number

  1063. of medical

  1064. professionals

  1065. in

  1066. in the

  1067. church

  1068. and so

  1069. you know

  1070. exactly

  1071. what

  1072. triage

  1073. is

  1074. but if

  1075. you

  1076. note

  1077. if an

  1078. entire

  1079. bus

  1080. was in

  1081. an

  1082. accident

  1083. and there

  1084. were a lot

  1085. of varied

  1086. injuries

  1087. in that

  1088. accident

  1089. and that

  1090. entire

  1091. bus load

  1092. was taken

  1093. to the

  1094. emergency

  1095. room

  1096. somebody

  1097. there

  1098. the doctor

  1099. in charge

  1100. or maybe

  1101. the charge

  1102. nurse

  1103. would quickly

  1104. do

  1105. triage

  1106. they would

  1107. assign

  1108. importance

  1109. to the

  1110. injuries

  1111. right

  1112. somebody

  1113. bumped

  1114. their head

  1115. they can

  1116. sit to

  1117. the side

  1118. and wait

  1119. right

  1120. somebody's

  1121. got a

  1122. piece

  1123. of

  1124. bus

  1125. frame

  1126. through

  1127. their

  1128. abdomen

  1129. they're

  1130. getting rushed

  1131. to the

  1132. back

  1133. right

  1134. it's an

  1135. assigning

  1136. of

  1137. importance

  1138. how much

  1139. time

  1140. and energy

  1141. do we

  1142. give

  1143. to different

  1144. areas

  1145. of

  1146. theology

  1147. right

  1148. so you

  1149. have

  1150. in a

  1151. tier

  1152. you've

  1153. got

  1154. primary

  1155. secondary

  1156. tertiary

  1157. and

  1158. one of my

  1159. favorite words

  1160. in the

  1161. world

  1162. quaternary

  1163. doctrines

  1164. right

  1165. now I

  1166. want to

  1167. address

  1168. these

  1169. just in

  1170. brief

  1171. and I'm

  1172. going to

  1173. take them

  1174. in opposite

  1175. order

  1176. so we're

  1177. going to

  1178. build from

  1179. least

  1180. important

  1181. to

  1182. most

  1183. important

  1184. so

  1185. firstly

  1186. quaternary

  1187. theology

  1188. or

  1189. doctrines

  1190. are just

  1191. this

  1192. frankly

  1193. they're

  1194. unimportant

  1195. they don't

  1196. matter

  1197. it's the

  1198. kind of

  1199. stuff

  1200. that sometimes

  1201. people like

  1202. to sit

  1203. around

  1204. and muse

  1205. about

  1206. lots of

  1207. quaternary

  1208. conversations

  1209. on seminary

  1210. campuses

  1211. right

  1212. let's just

  1213. think and

  1214. muse

  1215. my classic

  1216. example is

  1217. is there

  1218. life on

  1219. other

  1220. planets

  1221. I don't

  1222. care

  1223. the Bible

  1224. says nothing

  1225. about it

  1226. maybe

  1227. maybe

  1228. so if

  1229. you're a

  1230. college

  1231. guy

  1232. this is

  1233. college

  1234. guys

  1235. question

  1236. I like

  1237. to ask

  1238. this

  1239. question

  1240. I won't

  1241. take a

  1242. meeting

  1243. with you

  1244. to ask

  1245. this

  1246. question

  1247. it doesn't

  1248. matter

  1249. it's

  1250. unimportant

  1251. there's

  1252. other

  1253. things we

  1254. can talk

  1255. about

  1256. but

  1257. not

  1258. that

  1259. tertiary

  1260. tertiary

  1261. doctrine

  1262. these

  1263. kinds

  1264. of

  1265. things

  1266. are

  1267. important

  1268. so

  1269. they're

  1270. not

  1271. unimportant

  1272. but

  1273. they're

  1274. important

  1275. for

  1276. you

  1277. and

  1396. let me

  1400. of

  1401. tertiary

  1402. type

  1403. of

  1404. thinking

  1405. from

  1406. 1st

  1407. Corinthians

  1408. chapter

  1409. 8

  1410. this

  1411. is

  1412. Paul

  1413. here

  1414. reasoning

  1415. !

  1416. the

  1417. Corinthian

  1418. believers

  1419. they were

  1420. having

  1421. some

  1422. conflict

  1423. over

  1424. whether

  1425. or not

  1426. it was

  1427. okay

  1428. to

  1429. eat

  1430. food

  1431. that

  1432. had

  1433. been

  1434. offered

  1435. to

  1436. idols

  1437. right

  1438. so

  1439. this

  1440. meat

  1441. was

  1442. offered

  1443. to

  1444. idols

  1445. and

  1446. then

  1447. sold

  1448. in

  1449. the

  1450. marketplace

  1451. and

  1452. there

  1453. were

  1454. some

  1455. who

  1456. thought

  1457. that

  1458. was

  1459. okay

  1460. and

  1461. some

  1462. who

  1463. thought

  1464. it

  1465. was

  1466. entirely

  1467. unacceptable

  1468. listen

  1469. to what

  1470. he

  1471. says

  1472. therefore

  1473. as to

  1474. the

  1475. eating

  1476. of

  1477. food

  1478. offered

  1479. to

  1480. idols

  1481. we

  1482. know

  1483. that

  1484. an

  1485. idol

  1486. has

  1487. no

  1488. real

  1489. existence

  1490. and

  1491. that

  1492. there

  1493. is

  1494. no

  1495. god

  1496. but

  1497. one

  1498. so

  1499. he

  1500. basically

  1501. saying

  1502. we

  1503. know

  1504. that

  1505. food

  1506. offered

  1507. to

  1508. idols

  1509. it

  1510. doesn't

  1511. matter

  1512. because

  1513. there

  1514. there's

  1515. no

  1516. other

  1517. gods

  1518. for

  1519. although

  1520. there

  1521. may

  1522. be

  1523. so

  1524. called

  1525. gods

  1526. in

  1527. heaven

  1528. or

  1529. on

  1530. earth

  1531. as

  1532. indeed

  1533. there

  1534. are

  1535. many

  1536. gods

  1537. and

  1538. many

  1539. lords

  1540. yet

  1541. for

  1542. us

  1543. there

  1544. is

  1545. one

  1546. God

  1547. the

  1548. father

  1549. from

  1550. whom

  1551. all

  1552. things

  1553. and

  1554. from

  1555. whom

  1556. we

  1557. exist

  1558. and

  1559. one

  1560. Lord

  1561. Jesus

  1562. Christ

  1563. through

  1564. some

  1565. people

  1566. haven't

  1567. matured

  1568. in

  1569. this

  1570. way

  1571. just

  1572. yet

  1573. but

  1574. some

  1575. through

  1576. former

  1577. association

  1578. with

  1579. idols

  1580. eat

  1581. food

  1582. as

  1583. really

  1584. offered

  1585. to

  1586. an

  1587. idol

  1588. and

  1589. their

  1590. conscience

  1591. being

  1592. weak

  1593. is

  1594. defiled

  1595. so

  1596. people

  1597. who

  1598. have

  1599. been

  1600. converted

  1601. to

  1602. Christ

  1603. were

  1604. once

  1605. idolaters

  1606. and

  1607. they

  1608. don't

  1609. think

  1610. this

  1611. is

  1612. okay

  1613. this

  1614. feels

  1615. like

  1616. an

  1617. offense

  1618. against

  1619. the

  1620. one

  1621. true

  1622. God

  1623. Paul

  1624. says

  1625. then

  1626. food

  1627. will

  1628. not

  1629. commend

  1630. us

  1631. to

  1632. God

  1633. we

  1634. are

  1635. no

  1636. worse

  1637. off

  1638. if

  1639. we

  1640. do

  1641. not

  1642. eat

  1643. and

  1644. no

  1645. better

  1646. off

  1647. if

  1648. we

  1649. do

  1650. but

  1651. take

  1652. care

  1653. that

  1654. this

  1655. right

  1656. of

  1657. yours

  1658. does

  1659. not

  1660. somehow

  1661. become

  1662. a

  1663. stumbling

  1664. block

  1665. to

  1666. the

  1667. weak

  1668. for

  1669. if

  1670. anyone

  1671. sees

  1672. you

  1673. who

  1674. have

  1675. knowledge

  1676. eating

  1677. in

  1678. an

  1679. idol's

  1680. temple

  1681. will

  1682. he

  1683. not

  1684. be

  1685. encouraged

  1686. if

  1687. his

  1688. conscience

  1689. is

  1690. weak

  1691. to

  1692. eat

  1693. food

  1694. offered

  1695. to

  1696. idols

  1697. and

  1698. so

  1699. by

  1700. your

  1701. knowledge

  1702. this

  1703. weak

  1704. person

  1705. is

  1706. destroyed

  1707. the

  1708. brother

  1709. for

  1710. whom

  1711. Christ

  1712. died

  1713. so

  1714. they

  1715. be

  1716. sinning

  1717. in

  1718. their

  1719. own

  1720. conscience

  1721. thus

  1722. sinning

  1723. against

  1724. your

  1725. brothers

  1726. and

  1727. wounding

  1728. their

  1729. conscience

  1730. when

  1731. it

  1732. is

  1733. weak

  1734. you

  1735. sin

  1736. against

  1737. Christ

  1738. therefore

  1739. if

  1740. food

  1741. makes

  1742. my

  1743. brother

  1744. stumble

  1745. I

  1746. will

  1747. never

  1748. eat

  1749. meat

  1750. lest

  1751. I

  1752. make

  1753. my

  1754. brother

  1755. stumble

  1756. catch

  1757. that

  1758. reasoning

  1759. there

  1760. right

  1761. this

  1762. is

  1763. the

  1764. kind

  1765. of

  1766. thing

  1767. this

  1768. issue

  1769. is

  1770. the

  1771. kind

  1772. of

  1773. thing

  1774. that

  1775. characterizes

  1776. many

  1777. churches

  1778. !

  1779. picking

  1780. a

  1781. tertiary

  1782. doctrine

  1783. and

  1784. making

  1785. it

  1786. your

  1787. hill

  1788. to

  1789. die

  1790. on

  1791. you

  1792. are

  1793. going

  1794. to

  1795. convince

  1796. others

  1797. that

  1798. you're

  1799. reading

  1800. the

  1801. Bible

  1802. correctly

  1803. on

  1804. this

  1805. particular

  1806. gray

  1807. issue

  1808. it's

  1809. not

  1810. unimportant

  1811. but

  1812. it's

  1813. not

  1814. ultimately

  1815. important

  1816. right

  1817. you

  1818. may

  1819. have

  1820. more

  1821. maturity

  1822. or

  1823. in

  1824. some

  1825. cases

  1826. less

  1827. and

  1828. don't

  1829. we

  1830. do

  1831. well

  1832. trying

  1833. to

  1834. navigate

  1835. the

  1836. gray

  1837. areas

  1838. together

  1839. right

  1840. pressing

  1841. at one

  1842. another

  1843. making

  1844. our

  1845. case

  1846. and

  1847. moving

  1848. on

  1849. Paul

  1850. here

  1851. is

  1852. willing

  1853. to

  1854. become

  1855. a

  1856. vegetarian

  1857. for

  1858. the

  1859. sake

  1860. of

  1861. others

  1862. I

  1863. don't

  1864. know

  1865. I

  1866. don't

  1867. know

  1868. that

  1869. I'm

  1870. there

  1871. it'd

  1872. be

  1873. a

  1874. tough

  1875. one

  1876. for

  1877. me

  1878. notice

  1879. his

  1880. position

  1881. on

  1882. this

  1883. lesser

  1884. lesser

  1885. ordered

  1886. matter

  1887. right

  1888. so

  1889. that's

  1890. tertiary

  1891. !

  1892. tertiary

  1893. things

  1894. there

  1895. ought

  1896. to

  1897. be

  1898. a

  1899. lot

  1900. of

  1901. different

  1902. views

  1903. in

  1904. that

  1905. tertiary

  1906. fashion

  1907. in the

  1908. life

  1909. of

  1910. the

  1911. church

  1912. lots

  1913. of

  1914. diversity

  1915. lots

  1916. of

  1917. levels

  1918. of

  1919. maturity

  1920. we're

  1921. growing

  1922. in

  1923. faith

  1924. we're

  1925. moving

  1926. on

  1927. together

  1928. all

  1929. right

  1930. secondary

  1931. doctrine

  1932. very

  1933. important

  1934. this

  1935. category

  1936. particularly

  1937. for

  1938. local

  1939. church

  1940. unity

  1941. right

  1942. my

  1943. classic

  1944. example

  1945. concerns

  1946. the

  1947. ordinance

  1948. of

  1949. baptism

  1950. how

  1951. are

  1952. we

  1953. as

  1954. a

  1955. church

  1956. going

  1957. to

  1958. practice

  1959. the

  1960. ordinance

  1961. of

  1962. baptism

  1963. it

  1964. matters

  1965. what

  1966. do

  1967. we

  1968. believe

  1969. the

  1970. bible

  1971. teaches

  1972. about

  1973. this

  1974. so

  1975. we

  1976. are

  1977. credo

  1978. baptists

  1979. which

  1980. means

  1981. we

  1982. believe

  1983. that

  1984. christians

  1985. people

  1986. who have

  1987. made

  1988. believable

  1989. professions

  1990. of

  1991. faith

  1992. should

  1993. be

  1994. baptized

  1995. we

  1996. are

  1997. not

  1998. pedo

  1999. baptists

  2000. who

  2001. baptize

  2002. infants

  2003. we

  2004. can

  2005. extend

  2006. a lot

  2007. of

  2008. charity

  2009. right

  2010. to

  2011. our

  2012. pedo

  2013. baptist

  2014. brothers

  2015. and

  2016. sisters

  2017. it's

  2018. really

  2019. difficult

  2020. to be

  2021. in

  2022. fellowship

  2023. when

  2024. you

  2025. disagree

  2026. about

  2027. how

  2028. this

  2029. particular

  2030. ordinance

  2031. is meant

  2032. to be

  2033. practiced

  2034. so

  2035. that's

  2036. a good

  2037. classic

  2038. secondary

  2039. example

  2040. lastly

  2041. primary

  2042. doctrine

  2043. right

  2044. this is

  2045. important

  2046. important

  2047. important

  2048. right

  2049. this is

  2050. high order

  2051. importance

  2052. these

  2053. are the

  2054. hills

  2055. to die

  2056. on

  2057. right

  2058. this is

  2059. where we

  2060. stand

  2061. and say

  2062. no further

  2063. we will

  2064. not

  2065. compromise

  2066. in any

  2067. measure

  2068. on

  2069. these

  2070. things

  2071. things like

  2072. penal

  2073. substitutionary

  2074. atonement

  2075. right

  2076. Christ

  2077. died

  2078. in

  2079. our

  2080. stead

  2081. and

  2082. paid

  2083. the

  2084. price

  2143. these

  2144. are

  2145. the

  2148. these

  2149. are

  2150. the

  2152. that

  2153. ought

  2154. to

  2155. unite

  2156. us

  2157. hold

  2158. us

  2159. together

  2160. keep

  2161. us

  2162. pressing

  2163. on

  2164. together

  2165. right

  2166. these

  2167. are

  2168. the

  2169. things

  2170. that

  2171. those

  2172. other

  2173. matters

  2174. are

  2175. brought

  2176. in

  2177. to

  2178. distract

  2179. us

  2180. from

  2181. to

  2182. tear

  2183. us

  2184. apart

  2185. what

  2186. a

  2189. of

  2190. the

  2193. to

  2194. bring

  2195. in

  2196. tertiary

  2197. particularly

  2198. but also

  2199. secondary

  2200. doctrines

  2202. us

  2203. to

  2204. divide

  2205. over

  2206. the

  2207. primary

  2208. doctrine

  2209. that

  2210. matters

  2211. most

  2212. I

  2213. think

  2214. this

  2215. is

  2216. what

  2217. Jude

  2218. is

  2219. talking

  2220. about

  2221. in

  2222. verse

  2223. three

  2224. where

  2225. he

  2226. says

  2227. beloved

  2228. although

  2229. I

  2230. was

  2231. very

  2232. eager

  2233. to

  2234. write

  2235. to

  2236. you

  2237. about

  2238. our

  2239. common

  2240. salvation

  2241. I

  2242. found

  2243. it

  2244. necessary

  2245. to

  2246. write

  2247. appealing

  2248. to

  2249. you

  2250. to

  2251. contend

  2252. for

  2253. the

  2254. faith

  2255. that

  2256. was

  2257. once

  2258. for

  2259. all

  2260. delivered

  2261. to

  2262. the

  2263. saints

  2264. right

  2265. the

  2266. faith

  2267. once

  2268. for

  2269. all

  2270. delivered

  2271. to

  2272. the

  2273. saints

  2274. those

  2275. non

  2276. negotiable

  2277. things

  2278. this

  2279. process

  2280. we're

  2281. going to

  2282. have

  2283. to be

  2284. good

  2285. at

  2286. you're

  2287. going

  2288. to

  2289. have

  2290. to

  2291. be

  2292. able

  2293. to

  2294. decipher

  2295. where

  2296. does

  2297. this

  2298. disagreement

  2299. fall

  2300. is this

  2301. a thing

  2302. that we

  2303. can be

  2304. kind

  2305. hearted

  2306. about

  2307. charitable

  2308. toward

  2309. one

  2310. another

  2311. yeah

  2312. I'm

  2313. going to

  2314. consider

  2315. your

  2316. case

  2317. here

  2318. and

  2319. we're

  2320. going to

  2321. press

  2322. at

  2323. one

  2324. another

  2325. are

  2326. we

  2327. going

  2328. to

  2329. take

  2330. things

  2331. that

  2332. are

  2333. tertiary

  2334. and

  2335. call

  2336. others

  2337. not

  2338. Christian

  2339. because

  2340. they

  2341. don't

  2342. see

  2343. it

  2344. the

  2345. way

  2346. we

  2347. see

  2348. it

  2349. I

  2350. have

  2351. been

  2352. called

  2353. unfaithful

  2354. more times

  2355. in this

  2356. church

  2357. than I

  2358. care

  2359. to

  2360. tell

  2361. you

  2362. and

  2363. I

  2364. saw

  2365. this

  2366. I'm

  2367. done

  2368. doing

  2369. it

  2370. men

  2371. who

  2372. think

  2373. they

  2374. know

  2375. the

  2376. Bible

  2377. and

  2378. can

  2379. call

  2380. me

  2381. unfaithful

  2382. and

  2383. I

  2384. don't

  2385. see

  2386. it

  2387. the

  2388. same

  2389. way

  2390. which

  2391. is

  2392. them

  2393. calling

  2394. me

  2395. not

  2396. a

  2397. Christian

  2398. catch

  2399. that

  2400. I

  2401. see

  2402. the

  2403. Bible

  2404. this

  2405. way

  2406. you're

  2407. not

  2408. obeying

  2409. it

  2410. this

  2411. way

  2412. I

  2413. don't

  2414. read

  2415. it

  2416. that

  2417. way

  2418. well

  2419. then

  2420. am

  2421. I

  2422. not

  2423. a

  2424. Christian

  2425. it's

  2426. what

  2427. they're

  2428. declaring

  2429. in

  2430. doing

  2431. that

  2432. we

  2433. need

  2434. to

  2435. draw

  2436. a

  2437. firm

  2438. line

  2439. about

  2440. this

  2441. kind

  2442. of

  2443. behavior

  2444. I

  2445. love

  2446. people

  2447. who

  2448. love

  2449. the

  2450. word

  2451. but

  2452. you

  2453. need

  2454. to

  2455. understand

  2456. where

  2457. the

  2458. doctrines

  2459. fall

  2460. what

  2461. ought

  2462. to

  2463. divide

  2464. us

  2465. when

  2466. and

  2467. how

  2468. should

  2469. we

  2470. declare

  2471. somebody

  2472. outside

  2473. the

  2474. faith

  2475. be

  2476. cautious

  2477. about

  2478. how

  2479. you

  2480. practice

  2481. theological

  2482. triage

  2483. this

  2484. is

  2485. why

  2486. we've

  2487. been

  2488. working

  2489. for

  2490. quite

  2491. some

  2492. time

  2493. !

  2494. a

  2495. more

  2496. robust

  2497. statement

  2498. of

  2499. faith

  2500. which

  2501. we're

  2502. going

  2503. to

  2504. bring

  2505. to

  2506. you

  2507. as

  2508. a

  2509. church

  2510. you'll

  2511. be

  2512. in

  2513. the

  2514. process

  2515. as

  2516. a

  2517. congregational

  2518. church

  2519. I hope

  2520. sooner

  2521. than

  2522. later

  2523. we've

  2524. picked

  2525. up

  2526. the

  2527. 1689

  2528. second

  2529. london

  2530. baptist

  2531. confession

  2532. we've

  2533. been

  2534. working

  2535. hard

  2536. on it

  2537. we've

  2538. been

  2539. making

  2540. some

  2541. small

  2542. changes

  2543. we've

  2544. been

  2545. adding

  2546. some

  2547. things

  2548. some

  2549. substantial

  2550. sections

  2551. to

  2552. it

  2553. Zach

  2554. Skilling

  2555. as

  2556. a

  2557. pastoral

  2558. assistant

  2559. has

  2560. been

  2561. doing

  2562. a

  2563. through

  2564. this

  2565. to

  2566. bring

  2567. it

  2568. to

  2569. you

  2570. as

  2571. a

  2572. rough

  2573. draft

  2574. for

  2575. your

  2576. thought

  2577. and

  2578. we

  2579. hope

  2580. your

  2581. approval

  2582. maybe

  2583. some

  2584. minor

  2585. changes

  2586. need

  2587. to

  2588. be

  2589. made

  2590. and

  2591. this

  2592. document

  2593. will

  2594. contain

  2595. within

  2596. it

  2597. those

  2598. things

  2599. primary

  2600. and

  2601. those

  2602. things

  2603. secondary

  2604. it'll

  2605. be a

  2606. document

  2607. that

  2608. says

  2609. as

  2610. a

  2611. confessional

  2612. people

  2613. this

  2614. is

  2615. what

  2616. we

  2617. believe

  2618. the

  2619. Bible

  2620. teaches

  2621. on

  2622. these

  2623. matters

  2624. and

  2625. it

  2626. will

  2627. also

  2628. say

  2629. what

  2630. we

  2631. are

  2632. not

  2633. going

  2634. to

  2635. divide

  2636. and

  2637. we

  2638. are

  2639. not

  2640. going

  2641. to

  2642. be

  2643. getting

  2644. in

  2645. fights

  2646. over

  2647. such

  2648. a

  2649. thing

  2650. and

  2651. perhaps

  2652. we'll

  2653. discover

  2654. new

  2655. things

  2656. we

  2657. have

  2658. to

  2659. pick

  2660. up

  2661. and

  2662. think

  2663. about

  2664. together

  2665. perhaps

  2666. they

  2667. need

  2668. to

  2669. be

  2670. added

  2671. to

  2672. such

  2673. a

  2674. confession

  2675. this

  2676. type

  2677. of

  2678. robust

  2679. theology

  2680. thinking

  2681. together

  2682. about

  2683. what

  2684. the

  2685. Bible

  2686. teaches

  2687. us

  2688. is

  2689. going

  2690. to

  2691. be

  2692. very

  2693. important

  2694. in

  2695. the

  2696. coming

  2697. days

  2698. this

  2699. week

  2700. I

  2701. managed

  2702. to

  2703. see

  2704. !

  2705. a

  2706. long

  2707. range

  2708. mountain

  2709. view

  2710. if

  2711. you've

  2712. lived

  2713. up

  2714. here

  2715. very

  2716. long

  2717. you

  2718. have

  2719. those

  2720. moments

  2721. where

  2722. you're

  2723. driving

  2724. along

  2725. and

  2726. the

  2727. sun

  2728. breaks

  2729. through

  2730. the

  2731. clouds

  2732. in

  2733. the

  2734. perfect

  2735. way

  2736. and

  2737. out

  2738. somewhere

  2739. in

  2740. the

  2741. distance

  2742. you see

  2743. a

  2744. view

  2745. of

  2746. the

  2747. mountains

  2748. and

  2749. it

  2750. was

  2751. one

  2752. of

  2753. those

  2754. awe

  2755. inspiring

  2756. moments

  2757. where

  2758. you

  2759. go

  2760. what

  2761. a

  2762. view

  2763. and

  2764. I

  2765. think

  2766. as

  2767. people

  2768. generally

  2769. we're

  2770. compelled

  2771. by

  2772. big

  2773. grand

  2774. long

  2775. views

  2776. I

  2777. just

  2778. started

  2779. thinking

  2780. about

  2781. what

  2782. it

  2783. was

  2784. in

  2785. me

  2786. that

  2787. caused

  2788. that

  2789. and

  2790. then

  2791. I

  2792. used

  2793. how

  2794. I

  2795. also

  2796. really

  2797. love

  2798. things

  2799. up

  2800. close

  2801. so

  2802. how

  2803. I

  2804. enjoy

  2805. finding

  2806. something

  2807. little

  2808. in

  2809. the

  2810. woods

  2811. bright

  2812. red

  2813. mushroom

  2814. don't

  2815. eat

  2816. it

  2817. you know

  2818. particularly

  2819. colorful

  2820. bug

  2821. I mean

  2822. it's

  2823. just

  2824. an

  2825. amazing

  2826. amount

  2827. of

  2828. diversity

  2829. and

  2830. creativity

  2831. and the

  2832. creation

  2833. in which

  2834. we

  2835. live

  2836. it's

  2837. just

  2838. also

  2839. awe

  2840. inspiring

  2841. to

  2842. me

  2843. and

  2844. I

  2845. started

  2846. thinking

  2847. about

  2848. how

  2849. everything

  2850. in

  2851. the

  2852. middle

  2853. all

  2854. the

  2855. middle

  2856. ground

  2857. I

  2858. don't

  2859. pay

  2860. that

  2861. much

  2862. attention

  2863. to

  2864. it's

  2865. not

  2866. inspiring

  2867. and

  2868. unbeautiful

  2869. I

  2870. just

  2871. don't

  2872. really

  2873. pay

  2874. that

  2875. much

  2876. attention

  2877. to

  2878. it

  2879. and

  2880. I

  2881. kind

  2882. of

  2883. translated

  2884. this

  2885. over

  2886. into

  2887. my

  2888. Christian

  2889. walk

  2890. all the

  2891. stuff

  2892. in the

  2893. middle

  2894. all the

  2895. days

  2896. in which

  2897. I'm

  2898. walking

  2899. all of

  2900. the

  2901. trials

  2902. that I

  2903. go

  2904. through

  2905. the

  2906. work

  2907. that's

  2908. out

  2909. ahead

  2910. of

  2911. us

  2912. seems

  2913. to be

  2914. a

  2915. burden

  2916. seems

  2917. to weigh

  2918. me

  2919. down

  2920. my

  2921. once

  2922. a

  2923. day

  2924. scroll

  2925. through

  2926. twitter

  2927. makes

  2928. me

  2929. feeling

  2930. so

  2931. discouraged

  2932. the

  2933. day

  2934. in

  2935. day

  2936. out

  2937. interactions

  2938. that

  2939. don't

  2940. seem

  2941. to

  2942. go

  2943. the

  2944. way

  2945. you

  2946. want

  2947. them

  2948. to

  2949. go

  2950. the

  2951. physical

  2952. suffering

  2953. that

  2954. we

  2955. experience

  2956. from

  2957. time

  2958. to

  2959. time

  2960. in

  2961. doing

  2962. robust

  2963. theology

  2964. I

  2965. get

  2966. these

  2967. grand

  2968. views

  2969. of

  2970. our

  2971. God

  2972. and

  2973. his

  2974. promises

  2975. to

  2976. us

  2977. the

  2978. life

  2979. that

  2980. exists

  2981. beyond

  2982. this

  2983. life

  2984. and

  2985. I

  2986. also

  2987. am

  2988. shown

  2989. in

  2990. great

  2991. focus

  2992. the

  2993. things

  2994. that

  2995. are

  2996. up

  2997. close

  2998. the

  2999. way

  3000. that

  3001. God

  3002. is

  3003. working

  3004. in

  3005. the

  3006. minutia

  3007. of

  3008. my

  3009. life

  3010. it's

  3011. a

  3012. scripture

  3013. worked

  3014. in me

  3015. by the

  3016. spirit

  3017. that

  3018. helps

  3019. me

  3020. to

  3021. see

  3022. this

  3023. and

  3024. what

  3025. it

  3026. does

  3027. is

  3028. it

  3029. brings

  3030. all

  3031. of

  3032. the

  3033. middle

  3034. into

  3035. focus

  3036. it

  3037. brings

  3038. clarity

  3039. to

  3040. everything

  3041. else

  3042. that

  3043. I'm

  3044. walking

  3045. through

  3046. we

  3047. need

  3048. to

  3049. do

  3050. robust

  3051. theology

  3052. right

  3053. so

  3054. that

  3055. we

  3056. can

  3057. see

  3058. the

  3059. big

  3060. and

  3061. the

  3062. grand

  3063. where

  3064. God

  3065. is

  3066. glory

  3067. of

  3068. his

  3069. name

  3070. let's

  3071. pray

  3072. together
