  1. I invite you to take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. I've made this case in a broadest of sense in an introduction.

  4. We've talked about it in brief each week leading up to now.

  5. For the sake of time, I'm trying not to repeat myself over and over again.

  6. But your elders think that we are already living in the midst of a time of soft totalitarianism,

  7. a culture that expresses us to get on board with its directives, its truths,

  8. and that it's going to find us increasingly uncomfortable living in the days in which we live,

  9. particularly concerning issues of sexuality, gender, gender roles, etc.

  10. I think you know what I'm talking about,

  11. and this won't be the only assault against the church in the coming years.

  12. If you are new to this study, I think you'll be well served going back and listening to the recordings of it.

  13. Those should be available on our website.

  14. We're glad to have you catch up to where we are in our thinking together.

  15. But each week I've begun with three prerequisite statements.

  16. I think that they need to be repeated.

  17. Once again, as I've already stated, sermon series are not our normal practice.

  18. We typically preach verse-by-verse expositional sermons.

  19. This means that we take, for the main point or points of the sermon,

  20. the main point or points of the text.

  21. And it helps us to avoid error, to just walk through a text together.

  22. I think men who are being really honest with themselves know that they're given to error.

  23. It's altogether possible to come up with ideas and be thinking off in a direction that's not biblical.

  24. And so it's good for us just to walk through the text together.

  25. So that's what we do as a general habit, as a health for the church.

  26. But from time to time, it's helpful to think about something topically,

  27. to have some thoughts and to look to the scripture for it.

  28. But it's altogether possible to read what we want to into a text.

  29. And so I just want to caution you.

  30. Anytime you're hearing topical preaching,

  31. anytime you're hearing preaching at all, be discerning,

  32. but especially when you're hearing topical preaching.

  33. Secondly, I'm not trying to be an alarmist,

  34. but we do think that there's some work to be done here.

  35. Back when we originally preached just a single sermon on this,

  36. it actually felt a little alarmist at that time,

  37. and much less so now, just a few months later.

  38. But we love you.

  39. We want your good.

  40. We want the glory of God in our church.

  41. And so we believe this is important for us to be doing this work of thinking about these things together.

  42. And then lastly, the week that we're able to spend on this,

  43. frankly, the amount of time I'm comfortable spending to topical preaching,

  44. is not nearly enough.

  45. And so we need to be talking about this,

  46. pressing at each other's thinking,

  47. working on it together,

  48. ask questions,

  49. go to the Word.

  50. This is not the last time we need to hear this

  51. and be exhorted in these directions.

  52. So how do we build a resilient church culture?

  53. We've covered a number of things.

  54. We've said that it's going to be a work.

  55. We're going to have to be the secondary means

  56. in God's primary work in our lives.

  57. We're going to have to be a strong church.

  58. We're going to have to stand against the tide of soft totalitarianism.

  59. It's going to be destruction.

  60. It's going to have to be ingrained in who we are.

  61. We've already talked about our need to define and hold

  62. to the clear mission of the church.

  63. The church's mission is to make disciples

  64. and then as members of the church to be disciples

  65. in the places that God sends us.

  66. And we've talked about our need to do robust theology,

  67. knowing what God has commanded and what He has promised,

  68. and carefully doing the work of theological triage

  69. in order to maintain unity in the church,

  70. for the sake of standing firm and unified

  71. on matters of first importance.

  72. I think the enemy would do a good work,

  73. and I mean that from his perspective in the church,

  74. to get us highly distracted from matters of first importance,

  75. that we would turn and devour one another.

  76. Last week we considered our need to know accurate histories

  77. so that we will have knowledge of how we arrived at where we are,

  78. and especially how God orchestrated that arrival.

  79. And today we are going to consider the church's need

  80. to practice sacrificial hospitality.

  81. I have not said to this date in our study,

  82. but I want you all to know

  83. that these five things that your elders believe

  84. that we need to be working on are not foreign to you.

  85. We've already been working on these things

  86. because they are entirely biblical things.

  87. And isn't it wonderful when you submit yourself to God's Word

  88. how He will work out the details?

  89. We don't have to come with some brilliant sociological perspective

  90. and be extremely aware of all of the things going on around us

  91. to just pick up the Word

  92. and do the things that the Word has commanded us to do.

  93. And so I'm grateful for that,

  94. that we've already been about these kinds of things.

  95. But we do think we'll have to do them all the more.

  96. The particular activity of sacrificial hospitality,

  97. broadly speaking, you all excel at.

  98. And so don't hear this as a rebuke of any kind,

  99. but as an encouragement to press on.

  100. Keep loving one another sacrificially.

  101. So the word hospitality,

  102. and I do promise we're getting to our text,

  103. but there's a lot of setup here.

  104. The word hospitality in the English Standard Version

  105. translation of the New Testament

  106. appears four times in the noun form, hospitality,

  107. and two times in the adjective form, hospitable.

  108. In Romans 12, 13, we are told to seek to show hospitality.

  109. And in Hebrews 13 and verse 2,

  110. the author of Hebrews exhorts us to not neglect

  111. to show hospitality to strangers,

  112. for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

  113. I'm thankful that ESV left the word unawares in there for us.

  114. Likely, the author of Hebrews is referring to Abraham's hospitality in Genesis 18

  115. and Lot's hospitality in Genesis 19,

  116. both instances where angels were unknowingly hosted,

  117. or they were hosted unawares,

  118. and as we'll see later, of great importance,

  119. their feet were washed as part of that hospitality.

  120. One of the prerequisites to enroll a widow in the care of the church

  121. recorded in 1 Timothy chapter 5 and verse 10

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  122. is that she has shown hospitality

  123. and has washed the feet of the saints.

  124. And in 1 Peter chapter 4 verse 9,

    1 Peter 4:9

  125. we are instructed to show hospitality to one another

  126. without grumbling.

  127. So a heartfelt, unbegrudging display of hospitality.

  128. Then in 1 Timothy 3.2 and Titus 1.8,

  129. Paul states that a character requirement for an elder

  130. is that he is hospitable,

  131. gives leadership in this kind of welcoming.

  132. Hospitality in the Greek literally means friendship to the stranger.

  133. It's a compound word and it means friendship to the stranger.

  134. Hospitality seeks to welcome in those who may not feel welcome otherwise

  135. and give them a sense of belonging.

  136. And I say that our hospitality will need to be sacrificial

  137. because sometimes loving people in this way will be easy.

  138. You may find that you easily connect with someone,

  139. you may have similar likes and dislikes or just easily get along.

  140. But often loving people in this way will be hard.

  141. It requires sacrifice on your part.

  142. It's not always so easy to get along with people

  143. and to show them love.

  144. As a very minor example of this,

  145. and please hear this as a minor example,

  146. Clay Naylor is one of my best friends.

  147. And when we first met, we had very little in common.

  148. It's been growing, I think, as I've become more manly.

  149. But when I first met Clay, I didn't hunt.

  150. I rock climbed and whitewater paddled.

  151. And Clay was a hunter to the core.

  152. Drove a big Chevy truck with pipes.

  153. I was uninterested in things like that.

  154. He wore big belt buckles.

  155. I think he's still got some big belt buckles.

  156. I think he's wearing cowboy boots this morning.

  157. I've never owned a pair of cowboy boots.

  158. But we had the Lord Jesus in common, right?

  159. And that was enough to unite us together.

  160. And of course, we've become really dear friends across much time.

  161. We're going to have to be able to give of ourselves

  162. for the sake of others in a hospitable way.

  163. So let's look at our Lord's example to make this point further.

  164. It's John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  165. I'll begin reading in verse 1, and I'll read through verse 17.

  166. Before I read, let me remind you, beloved,

  167. that this is God's word to us,

  168. written for his glory and our good.

  169. And so we would do well to listen to it

  170. in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  171. Now, before the feast of the Passover,

  172. when Jesus knew that his hour had come

  173. to depart out of this world to the Father,

  174. having loved his own who were in the world,

  175. he loved them to the end.

  176. And I want to read that to you again.

  177. That last little phrase has struck me again and again this week.

  178. Now, before the feast of the Passover,

  179. this is his last meal with his disciples,

  180. when Jesus knew that his hour had come

  181. to depart out of this world to the Father,

  182. having loved his own who were in the world,

  183. he loved them to the end.

  184. Gave of himself all the way to the point of death.

  185. What a precious phrase that is.

  186. He loved them to the end.

  187. During supper,

  188. when the devil had already put into the heart

  189. of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,

  190. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands

  191. and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

  192. rose from supper.

  193. He laid aside his outer garments

  194. and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.

  195. Then he poured water into a basin

  196. and began to wash the disciples' feet

  197. and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  198. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,

  199. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  200. Jesus answered him,

  201. What I am doing you do not understand now,

  202. but afterward you will understand.

  203. Peter said to him,

  204. You shall never wash my feet.

  205. Jesus answered him,

  206. If I do not wash you,

  207. you have no share with me.

  208. Simon Peter said to him,

  209. Lord, not my feet only,

  210. but also my hands and my head.

  211. Jesus said to him,

  212. The one who has bathed does not need to wash

  213. except for his feet,

  214. but is completely clean.

  215. And you are clean,

  216. but not every one of you.

  217. So he takes a metaphor that's both physical

  218. and he makes it spiritual

  219. and goes back to it being physical

  220. and back to spiritual once again.

  221. Verse 11,

  222. For he knew who was to betray him.

  223. That was why he said,

  224. Not all of you are clean.

  225. When he had washed their feet

  226. and put on his outer garments

  227. and resumed his place,

  228. he said to them,

  229. Do you understand what I have done to you?

  230. You call me teacher and Lord,

  231. and you are right,

  232. for so I am.

  233. If I then, your Lord and teacher,

  234. have washed your feet,

  235. you also ought to wash one another's feet.

  236. For I have given you an example

  237. that you also should do

  238. just as I have done to you.

  239. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  240. a servant is not greater than his master,

  241. nor is a messenger greater

  242. than the one who sent him.

  243. If you know these things,

  244. blessed are you if you do them.

  245. This is just an astounding text, right?

  246. What an amazing picture

  247. on this last night before

  248. the suffering crucifixion

  249. of our Lord and Savior,

  250. Jesus Christ.

  251. Jesus washed their feet.

  252. It's our first observation from this text.

  253. Jesus washed their feet.

  254. This was a job that was reserved

  255. for the very lowliest of servant.

  256. In this day, people wore sandals,

  257. I think you know,

  258. and it was a dusty and dry place.

  259. And probably in our day,

  260. we're more aware of what sandal wearing

  261. does to feet

  262. than maybe in some decades past.

  263. If you wear sandals,

  264. your feet get sweaty,

  265. and dirt sticks to your feet,

  266. and it gets more sweaty,

  267. and you end up with kind of a

  268. smelly paste on your feet.

  269. And so people would come,

  270. washed,

  271. to somebody's home for dinner,

  272. and the way they were welcomed

  273. into the home as a servant

  274. would wash their feet,

  275. get them totally clean.

  276. They reclined at table,

  277. and feet were more prominent

  278. in the eating of meals

  279. in this day

  280. because of the way

  281. that they reclined

  282. at table.

  283. So Jesus makes himself

  284. the lowliest

  285. of the household

  286. to set an example for them.

  287. Now note,

  288. they are already reclining at table.

  289. Their feet have already been washed.

  290. They didn't have the actual need

  291. to be washed at this point.

  292. So he's doing it figuratively

  293. to show us

  294. what must be done,

  295. the way in which

  296. we ought to serve

  297. one another.

  298. It takes great humility

  299. to serve other people

  300. in this way.

  301. I don't think we're meant today

  302. to literally wash people's feet.

  303. Perhaps they need that,

  304. and maybe that was a way

  305. that you could serve them.

  306. But more regularly,

  307. in other ways,

  308. will we serve others.

  309. to recognize

  310. that we are meant

  311. to be servants

  312. of all.

  313. Jesus said in Matthew 20,

    Matthew 20:25

  314. verse 25 and following,

  315. You know that the rulers

  316. of the Gentiles

  317. lord it over them,

  318. and their great ones

  319. exercise authority over them.

  320. It shall not be so

  321. among you.

  322. But whoever will be great

  323. among you

  324. must be your servant,

  325. and whoever will be

  326. first among you

  327. must be your slave,

  328. even as the Son of Man

  329. came not to be served,

  330. but to serve

  331. and to give his life

  332. as a ransom for many.

  333. The greatest,

  334. the highest example

  335. of Jesus' service to us

  336. was that he gave

  337. his very life for us.

  338. But also don't miss

  339. that he served, right?

  340. Here he is,

  341. washing the disciples' feet.

  342. And so in the kingdom of God,

  343. the first will be last,

  344. and the last will be first.

  345. And we live in an age

  346. where dynamic

  347. and big leadership

  348. is very admired.

  349. And the type of leadership

  350. that Jesus seems

  351. to be blessing here

  352. is the type of leadership

  353. that is meek,

  354. and it is humble,

  355. and it is service-oriented.

  356. Notice secondly from the text,

  357. Jesus did not only

  358. wash the feet

  359. of those who loved him.

  360. Notice how John

  361. sets the text up

  362. in verse 2.

  363. He says,

  364. to start this whole episode,

  365. during supper,

  366. when the devil

  367. had already put it

  368. into the heart

  369. of Judas Iscariot,

  370. Simon's son,

  371. to betray him.

  372. He wants it to be clear to us,

  373. the intention of

  374. Judas' heart,

  375. which Jesus would have been

  376. aware of,

  377. and we see some further

  378. evidence of that

  379. in the text

  380. as the chapter goes on.

  381. He knew full well

  382. what Judas was going to do,

  383. and yet,

  384. I believe,

  385. he washes Judas' feet.

  386. Verse 12 says,

  387. when he had washed

  388. their feet.

  389. There's no reason to think

  390. that he excluded him

  391. from this act of love

  392. and of service.

  393. We are so apt

  394. to only serve others

  395. when they receive it well,

  396. give us the acclaim

  397. that we want,

  398. right?

  399. When it makes us feel good

  400. to serve,

  401. rather than us doing so

  402. sacrificially

  403. for their good,

  404. not necessarily for ours.

  405. But Jesus did not only

  406. wash the feet

  407. of those

  408. who loved him.

  409. Third observation,

  410. Jesus washed their feet

  411. to set for us

  412. an example.

  413. Let's not miss

  414. verse 15.

  415. He says,

  416. I did this

  417. so that you

  418. would do it

  419. for one another,

  420. so that you would

  421. serve others

  422. in this way.

  423. And I think

  424. it's off of

  425. texts like

  426. Genesis

  427. that's being referred to

  428. in Hebrews 13,

    Hebrews 13:2

  429. verse 2,

  430. Genesis

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  431. chapters 18 and 19,

  432. or 1 Timothy 5,

  433. 10,

  434. that this kind of service

  435. was meant to be a thing

  436. that we are to be doing

  437. for one another.

  438. We do this

  439. and we're motivated

  440. to do this

  441. out of the hospitality

  442. we've been shown

  443. by God

  444. in Christ.

  445. All of us

  446. wants cast off,

  447. all of us

  448. wants not welcome

  449. because of our sin,

  450. but in Christ,

  451. God has welcomed us.

  452. then He gives to us

  453. this same work

  454. to be done.

  455. Paul wrote

  456. in 2 Corinthians 5,

  457. beginning in verse 14,

  458. the love of Christ

  459. controls us

  460. because we have

  461. concluded this,

  462. that one has died

  463. for all,

  464. therefore all have died.

  465. And He died for all

  466. that those who live

  467. might no longer

  468. live for themselves,

  469. but for Him

  470. who for their sake

  471. died

  472. and was raised.

  473. From now on,

  474. therefore,

  475. we regard no one

  476. according to the flesh.

  477. Even though we once

  478. regarded Christ

  479. according to the flesh,

  480. we regard Him thus

  481. no longer.

  482. Therefore,

  483. if anyone is in Christ,

  484. he is a new creation.

  485. The old has passed away,

  486. behold,

  487. the new

  488. has come.

  489. All this is from God

  490. who through Christ

  491. reconciled us

  492. to Himself

  493. and gave us

  494. the ministry

  495. of reconciliation.

  496. That is,

  497. in Christ,

  498. God was reconciling

  499. the world to Himself,

  500. not counting their

  501. trespasses against them

  502. and entrusting to us

  503. the message

  504. of reconciliation.

  505. Because we've been

  506. welcomed by God

  507. in Christ,

  508. reconciled to Him

  509. because of the death

  510. and life

  511. of Jesus,

  512. we've been given

  513. this same message.

  514. Therefore,

  515. we are ambassadors

  516. for Christ,

  517. God making His appeal

  518. through us.

  519. Ambassadors

  520. sent into the world

  521. to declare a message

  522. from our King.

  523. We implore you

  524. on behalf of Christ,

  525. this is the message,

  526. on behalf of Christ,

  527. be reconciled

  528. to God.

  529. For our sake,

  530. He made Him

  531. to be sin

  532. who knew no sin

  533. so that in Him

  534. we might become

  535. the righteousness

  536. of God.

  537. If the church

  538. is going to stand

  539. against

  540. the rising tide

  541. of soft totalitarianism,

  542. it will be true

  543. as we spoke about

  544. in the clear mission

  545. of the church

  546. that the church

  547. will advance

  548. against the gates

  549. of hell.

  550. But the question is,

  551. will this church

  552. advance

  553. against the gates

  554. of hell?

  555. If we will,

  556. as a secondary means,

  557. we'll have to be

  558. sacrificially

  559. hospitable.

  560. We're going to have

  561. to involve

  562. ourselves

  563. in each other's lives

  564. in a way

  565. that displays

  566. the love of Christ.

  567. Again,

  568. John chapter 13,

    John 13 chapter mention

  569. Jesus says,

  570. they will know

  571. you are my disciples

  572. by

  573. your theology,

  574. the way you come

  575. and sing,

  576. the times you gather,

  577. the times you don't gather.

  578. How will they know?

  579. By your love

  580. for one another.

  581. To be a compelling

  582. community together

  583. because we love each other

  584. and we show each other

  585. this kind of hospitality

  586. will be something

  587. beautiful

  588. for those

  589. Christ is calling

  590. to Himself.

  591. and we will also

  592. have to display

  593. this kind of

  594. sacrificial hospitality

  595. for those

  596. outside the faith,

  597. welcoming them in

  598. that we might

  599. share this good news,

  600. that we might

  601. herald

  602. the gospel,

  603. this ministry

  604. of reconciliation,

  605. that we might get them

  606. to sit long enough

  607. to see displayed

  608. before them

  609. the love

  610. of Christ,

  611. that they might hear

  612. and believe

  613. the gospel.

  614. And a book

  615. that I would commend

  616. to you entitled

  617. The Gospel Comes

  618. with a House Key

  619. by Rosaria Butterfield.

  620. She wrote this,

  621. radically

  622. ordinary

  623. hospitality,

  624. I'm using the term

  625. sacrificial instead,

  626. radically ordinary

  627. hospitality

  628. characterizes

  629. those who don't

  630. fuss over

  631. different world views

  632. represented

  633. at the dinner table.

  634. The truly hospitable

  635. aren't embarrassed

  636. to keep friendships

  637. with people

  638. who are different.

  639. and she goes on

  640. to make the case

  641. that these friendships

  642. are formed

  643. for the sake

  644. of gospel

  645. reconciliation,

  646. right?

  647. Not just for the friendship,

  648. but to share

  649. the good news

  650. with people

  651. who are dying

  652. without

  653. this gospel

  654. of reconciliation.

  655. So practically,

  656. this is going to take

  657. different forms

  658. to exercise

  659. hospitality,

  660. right?

  661. We're going to have

  662. to be hospitable

  663. in our public

  664. gathering together,

  665. so come to our

  666. public gatherings

  667. to serve

  668. and not to be

  669. served.

  670. So much conversation

  671. about the church

  672. is what does it do

  673. for me?

  674. We've all heard

  675. the phrase,

  676. I just wasn't getting

  677. anything out of it.

  678. We ought to be

  679. asking the question,

  680. how can I be

  681. a blessing

  682. to others?

  683. I would suggest

  684. to you that if you

  685. come to the public

  686. gathering of the church

  687. with that question

  688. in mind,

  689. how might the Lord

  690. use me this morning?

  691. How might I bless

  692. others?

  693. How might I show

  694. sacrificial hospitality

  695. to others

  696. that in the process

  697. you will also be

  698. blessed,

  699. served?

  700. Romans 12.10,

  701. Paul says,

  702. love one another

  703. with brotherly

  704. affection.

  705. Outdo

  706. one another

  707. in showing

  708. honor.

  709. Can you imagine

  710. a church of people

  711. and again you do

  712. this in great measure

  713. but can you imagine

  714. if every one of us

  715. was seeking to

  716. out honor

  717. the other?

  718. We're always going,

  719. no, no, no,

  720. I got it.

  721. No, no,

  722. let me jump in.

  723. No, no,

  724. I'll take the lesser

  725. position.

  726. You take the greater

  727. position.

  728. Let me serve you

  729. again and again

  730. and again

  731. and again.

  732. That would be a

  733. compelling community

  734. of Christians,

  735. would it not?

  736. a group of people

  737. who love each

  738. other in

  739. this way.

  740. Come to our

  741. public gatherings

  742. to serve,

  743. not to be served.

  744. I think you'll

  745. find yourself

  746. being served

  747. in the process.

  748. Open up your

  749. home

  750. and spend

  751. your resources.

  752. Hospitality

  753. will cost

  754. something,

  755. right?

  756. It's expensive

  757. to feed people,

  758. especially as

  759. prices

  760. are rising.

  761. But all

  762. that you have

  763. is the Lord's

  764. and you are

  765. meant to be

  766. a steward

  767. of it,

  768. not selfish

  769. with it.

  770. I pray

  771. for myself

  772. and for all

  773. of us

  774. that we would

  775. have the mind

  776. of Paul

  777. as he wrote

  778. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  779. chapter 12

  780. and verse 15

  781. where he said,

  782. I will most

  783. gladly

  784. spend

  785. and be spent

  786. for your souls.

  787. I don't think

  788. a single one

  789. of us

  790. on our deathbeds

  791. or for the

  792. eternity beyond

  793. will wish

  794. we just had

  795. a little more

  796. for ourselves.

  797. Who wish

  798. we just spent

  799. more on us.

  800. I think

  801. that we will

  802. regret

  803. the things

  804. we did

  805. for ourselves

  806. and we will

  807. wish we had

  808. been more

  809. sacrificial

  810. for the sake

  811. of others.

  812. Store up

  813. treasure

  814. in heaven,

  815. right?

  816. Give of

  817. yourself

  818. for the life

  819. to come.

  820. Charles Spurgeon

  821. in a really

  822. wonderful address.

  823. This is the

  824. quotation on your

  825. bulletin

  826. this week.

  827. I love that this

  828. quotation comes

  829. in a fairly

  830. strong and long

  831. address where

  832. he's talking

  833. about the

  834. insufficiency

  835. of his preaching.

  836. preaching.

  837. And if you

  838. know much

  839. about Spurgeon

  840. you'll know

  841. that even

  842. in his day

  843. he was called

  844. the prince

  845. of preachers.

  846. He knew

  847. this about

  848. himself.

  849. People had

  850. called him

  851. the prince

  852. of preachers.

  853. So in this

  854. address he

  855. suggests to

  856. people that

  857. you could

  858. correct the

  859. errors of my

  860. preaching if

  861. you'll spend

  862. time with

  863. people and

  864. you'll ask

  865. them what

  866. they thought

  867. and answer

  868. their questions

  869. etc.

  870. So it's on

  871. the heels

  872. of this that

  873. he said

  874. this.

  875. Preaching

  876. is important.

  877. Public

  878. evangelism and

  879. exhortation is

  880. important but

  881. it's often our

  882. kindness and

  883. personal relationships

  884. that helps people

  885. cross the line

  886. into faith.

  887. Now Spurgeon

  888. was a good

  889. Calvinist.

  890. He wrote a

  891. little book

  892. called The

  893. Defense of

  894. Calvinism where

  895. he said

  896. Calvinism is

  897. the first

  898. sentence in

  899. the book.

  900. Calvinism is

  901. the gospel.

  902. He believed

  903. in first

  904. order causes

  905. but also in

  906. the second

  907. order causes

  908. as well.

  909. The Lord

  910. uses preaching

  911. and public

  912. evangelism and

  913. exhortation but

  914. often what

  915. Spurgeon is

  916. saying he

  917. uses our

  918. kindness and

  919. our personal

  920. relationships to

  921. help people

  922. cross the

  923. line into

  924. faith.

  925. So we see

  926. in this text

  927. Jesus giving

  928. us this

  929. example of

  930. sacrificial

  931. hospitality.

  932. Helping

  933. people,

  934. welcoming them

  935. in that they

  936. might be

  937. restored to

  938. God.

  939. And

  940. fourthly,

  941. Jesus gives

  942. to us a

  943. promise.

  944. Verse 16

  945. he says,

  946. Truly,

  947. truly,

  948. I say to

  949. you.

  950. Anytime

  951. there's that

  952. repetition in

  953. Jesus,

  954. Jesus says

  955. this again

  956. and again

  957. and again

  958. throughout the

  959. gospels,

  960. truly,

  961. truly,

  962. he's saying

  963. not only

  964. truly but

  965. really,

  966. truly,

  967. he's

  968. emphasizing

  969. it.

  970. The only

  971. time we

  972. see a

  973. triplicate

  974. in the

  975. entirety of

  976. text is

  977. holy,

  978. holy,

  979. holy,

  980. right?

  981. But here

  982. Jesus will

  983. go twice,

  984. truly,

  985. truly,

  986. right?

  987. This is an

  988. axiom.

  989. This is a

  990. thing to

  991. hang your

  992. hat on.

  993. I say

  994. to you,

  995. a servant

  996. is not

  997. greater than

  998. his master

  999. nor is

  1000. a messenger

  1001. greater than

  1002. the one

  1003. who sent

  1004. him,

  1005. right?

  1006. So if

  1007. you are

  1008. my

  1009. disciples,

  1010. right?

  1011. If you

  1012. know these

  1013. things,

  1014. blessed

  1015. are you

  1016. if you

  1017. do them,

  1018. right?

  1019. Set aside,

  1020. happy are

  1021. you if

  1022. you do

  1023. them.

  1024. And I

  1025. think that

  1026. Jesus means

  1027. both in

  1028. this life

  1029. and in

  1030. the life

  1031. to come,

  1032. that we

  1033. would give

  1034. of ourselves

  1035. for the

  1036. sake of

  1037. others to

  1038. the glory

  1039. of our

  1040. God.

  1041. We say

  1042. in our

  1043. house often,

  1044. the life

  1045. best lived

  1046. is lived

  1047. in service

  1048. to others,

  1049. right?

  1050. So to the

  1051. degree that

  1052. when my

  1053. boys are

  1054. acting

  1055. selfishly

  1056. toward one

  1057. another or

  1058. to their

  1059. parents or

  1060. to others,

  1061. I say,

  1062. boys,

  1063. the life

  1064. best lived

  1065. is,

  1066. and I

  1067. make them

  1068. fill in

  1069. the blank,

  1070. and they

  1071. know it

  1072. lived in

  1073. service to

  1074. others.

  1075. And they

  1076. often say

  1077. it begrudgingly,

  1078. but they

  1079. know at

  1080. least that

  1081. the life

  1082. best lived

  1083. is lived

  1084. in service

  1085. to others.

  1086. others.

  1087. I will

  1088. most gladly

  1089. spend and

  1090. be spent

  1091. for your

  1092. souls.

  1093. Let that

  1094. be true of

  1095. each and

  1096. every one

  1097. of us

  1098. toward each

  1099. and every

  1100. one of us.

  1101. Let's pray

  1102. together.
