  1. These next two things are means of doing that.

  2. Okay?

  3. So, redeem the time for knowing Christ.

  4. You know, college students, a lot of you are just now figuring out what a lot of you believe.

  5. Was this what my parents taught me?

  6. Is this what I believe?

  7. It's a great time to grow.

  8. So, redeem that kairos to really know Christ.

  9. But number two, redeem the time for growing in relationship with God's people.

  10. In other words, the church.

  11. The covenant fellowship of believers.

  12. The Bible has some really great metaphors for the church.

  13. It's called a body.

  14. In 1 Corinthians 12.

  15. So, to be a part of a body means to belong to a living, functioning, you know, community.

  16. A flock, which can sound degrading because you don't ever want to be compared to a sheep.

  17. But, belonging to a flock means belonging to a community dependent on Christ for food and protection and direction.

  18. A temple, Ephesians 2.

  19. To be a stone in His temple means to belong to a worshiping community.

  20. And then a household, a family.

  21. That's 1 Timothy 3.15.

  22. Like we have a common fatherhood.

  23. And we will be together for eternity.

  24. So, this is a rehearsal for what is to come.

  25. So, understand.

  26. I don't think most of us in here would be guilty of this.

  27. Maybe at some point in our lives we were.

  28. But there's a lot of people who say, yeah, I love Christ.

  29. I'm all about Jesus.

  30. But I can't stand the church.

  31. You've heard people say that before.

  32. Me and Jesus.

  33. That's like all I need.

  34. The last place, I think.

  35. Yeah, no.

  36. Just kidding.

  37. Just write it down or log it away in your head.

  38. I had to preach on it yesterday at this wedding.

  39. Ephesians 5.

  40. It talks about the love that Christ has for His church.

  41. And it gives us an example.

  42. It says, husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.

  43. So, then it goes down in verse 29.

  44. Christ loves His church.

  45. He nourishes and cherishes His church.

  46. Because we are members of His body.

  47. So, you can observe that.

  48. Christ loves His church and died for it.

  49. He cares for the purity of His church.

  50. And He is one with His church.

  51. So much so that if you attack the church, you're attacking Christ.

  52. Any good done to the church is a good done to Christ.

  53. So, the church, in one of those images, is called the Bride of Christ.

  54. So, how many of you husbands would get it on if someone called your wife ugly and deplorable?

  55. Jesus could take some people to the cleaners if He wanted to.

  56. Don't insult His bride.

  57. If you love Christ, then you will love what Christ loves.

  58. Christ loves His church.

  59. With all its problems, He loves His church.

  60. And He died for the sake of His bride, the church.

  61. And so, we are to redeem the time by growing in relationship with God's people.

  62. Amazingly, for some reason, God has determined that so much of what we need as believers comes through.

  63. This is just His design.

  64. It comes through the fellowship of the body.

  65. We need our brothers and sisters.

  66. There are rich deposits of Christ in every single believer.

  67. That's 2 Corinthians 4-7.

  68. The treasure of treasures is hidden inside the believer.

  69. Christ takes up residence inside the believer.

  70. And if that's true, there are things that we can learn about God and know Him by,

  71. by getting to know the body of Christ better.

  72. By getting to know and understand our brothers and sisters better.

  73. And God has designed for us not to face all the crud and trials of this world alone.

  74. But to be there for one another.

  75. To help each other along as we go.

  76. But we've been saved.

  77. We belong to the body.

  78. We belong to Jesus.

  79. Jesus suffered and died, it says in the Scripture.

  80. The church of God.

  81. That He had pained with His own blood.

  82. He died for His wife, the church.

  83. And so, I pray that as time goes by, we are known here, first and foremost, we are known.

  84. I won't mess with other churches.

  85. I'm just going to really talk about ours.

  86. Like, I hope we are known as a people who love God, who worship Him with fear and reverence and joy,

  87. in spirit and in truth.

  88. So, what are one of the first things people talk about when they're asked about their church?

  89. What pops out of their mouth?

  90. Will it be something other than Christ?

  91. What is the gathering component of a local church?

  92. That's a good litmus test.

  93. Why do certain churches gather and why does ours gather?

  94. And often you'll see an age demographic.

  95. We like being with old people, so we're with old people.

  96. We like being with young people, so we're with a bunch of young people.

  97. It could be affinity-driven.

  98. There's a bunch of singles at this church.

  99. There's a bunch of married people at this church.

  100. But more than likely, it's program-driven.

  101. This church has a great children's ministry.

  102. This church has a great youth ministry.

  103. This church has incredible music.

  104. And that's what people talk about, right?

  105. When you ask them about their church,

  106. Oh, we just love our music.

  107. We just love our worship service.

  108. We have both a traditional and a contemporary service,

  109. so we can fit everybody in.

  110. And that just feeds the consumer mindset the opposite of what Christ would have us do,

  111. which is to unite around Him, right?

  112. I heard on a local Christian radio station several years ago,

  113. and it's not a bad station.

  114. I won't hate on it.

  115. It's not a bad station at all.

  116. But for 20 minutes, I had people call in and explain,

  117. answer the question,

  118. How do you do church?

  119. But that whole time, no one said,

  120. What does Jesus say about the church?

  121. Isn't He the head of the church?

  122. Didn't He die for the church?

  123. That was the whole point.

  124. And a lot of well-meaning people just sort of missed that.

  125. So what is our church going to be known for?

  126. We do a lot of good things here.

  127. We're about a lot of good things.

  128. So these aren't bad things when I say this,

  129. but we don't want to be known as the homeschool church.

  130. We plan on homeschooling our kids, Lord willing.

  131. So you know I'm not hating on that,

  132. but we don't want to be known for that.

  133. We don't want to be known as a church

  134. that each family has to have X number of kids.

  135. We don't want to be known for that either.

  136. We do want to be known for the fact that we love children.

  137. But is Christ the gathering component of our church,

  138. or does it become something else?

  139. Here's how you know.

  140. If that one component is removed,

  141. sometimes that church falls apart.

  142. There's nothing else there.

  143. If it's a pastor personality or a certain style of music,

  144. it just vanishes.

  145. When that is gone, that church falls apart.

  146. And that happens with a lot of megachurches out there,

  147. with a cool pastor.

  148. When he's gone, like, no one knows what to do

  149. because they haven't been functioning.

  150. But I pray that our church is known for its love for Christ

  151. and love for one another

  152. and not allow good things to become the main thing.

  153. So the Scripture teaches us that we have unity already in Christ.

  154. We don't have to create unity.

  155. We don't have to make it up out of thin air

  156. and unify over some, you know, worldly thing

  157. like this ministry or that program or this style of music.

  158. We are united in Christ.

  159. And so we need each other in discipleship.

  160. We need each other for accountability and discipline,

  161. encouragement and prayer and leadership.

  162. I could go on and on.

  163. So that's why this is really more of a bigger thing,

  164. but you'll just have to maybe talk to me later

  165. if you can handle any more.

  166. But we're all gifted, too.

  167. When you are saved, you are given gifts by the Holy Spirit.

  168. We just read that, which is so cool.

  169. You are given gifts.

  170. And just because you can't stand up here and do something,

  171. it doesn't matter.

  172. There are tons of ways that you can serve the body

  173. that are special and that have eternal value.

  174. So, quick word to students, you know,

  175. campus ministries are amazing.

  176. I was a part of one, campus outreach,

  177. for a little over three years.

  178. Loved it.

  179. It's not in North Georgia anymore, unfortunately.

  180. But understand, as cool as campus ministries are,

  181. they don't replace the church.

  182. They just don't.

  183. And a good one, in fact, will point you to the church.

  184. They'll say, we're just here to kind of help serve the body.

  185. And we see sort of a movement in that now,

  186. which I'm thankful for.

  187. So just to kind of remember,

  188. just come and be a part of a fellowship.

  189. We hope it's here, but it's not.

  190. There's some other healthy churches out there.

  191. And then lastly,

  192. whew, man, maybe a few more minutes here.

  193. That water looks really good to me right now.

  194. But lastly, number three,

  195. to redeem the time,

  196. to redeem the Kairos,

  197. redeem it for obedience to God's mission.

  198. Obedience to God's mission.

  199. We are called by Jesus in Matthew 28

  200. to go and to make disciples of all nations.

  201. And what is the goal of that?

  202. Read in Revelation.

  203. The large myriad of myriad and thousands of thousands

  204. from every nation, tribe, and tongue

  205. worshiping Christ at His throne

  206. at the end of time.

  207. And that's only going to happen if we go.

  208. Most of the men who heard Jesus say that

  209. didn't even make it out of Judea.

  210. So we know that that wasn't the plan.

  211. It was meant for the disciples that they made

  212. to continue that good work,

  213. to go to the ends of the earth.

  214. And so Paul says,

  215. walk in wisdom toward outsiders,

  216. making the best use of the time.

  217. That's Colossians 4, same word.

  218. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders.

  219. So we all have neighbors,

  220. coworkers, family members

  221. that are still walking in darkness.

  222. And it's hard.

  223. It hurts to watch.

  224. But we have the message.

  225. We can't save them,

  226. but we know the one who can.

  227. All right?

  228. And students,

  229. you will never have,

  230. probably most of you,

  231. some of you going to the army

  232. may have as much opportunity,

  233. but you'll never have as many chances

  234. to connect with unbelievers as you do now.

  235. Like just the relationships,

  236. it's just a sea of relationships,

  237. of needy people.

  238. It's that depressed guy

  239. that never leaves his room,

  240. who just plays video games

  241. and sits on his phone

  242. because he's scared to go

  243. and like face the world.

  244. Right?

  245. It's that person

  246. in the gym

  247. just trying to always exercise

  248. like crazy

  249. because they want people

  250. to give them glory

  251. for how they look.

  252. It's that girl

  253. that spends two hours

  254. putting makeup on

  255. because she's afraid

  256. to go out

  257. and afraid that people

  258. will think that she's unattractive.

  259. She's being evaluated

  260. by the people

  261. that are around her.

  262. And a special heart

  263. for these guys,

  264. the ones who just got hammered

  265. and partied

  266. and went crazy.

  267. They need the Lord too.

  268. You've got to find ways

  269. to get them through their life

  270. safely, of course.

  271. And so,

  272. redeem the time.

  273. Make the best use of it.

  274. The scripture says,

  275. rescue those

  276. who are being taken away to death.

  277. Hold back

  278. those who are stumbling

  279. to slaughter.

  280. Understand that

  281. as we bear witness to Christ,

  282. he's going to use you

  283. to reach those

  284. who are around you.

  285. And in closing,

  286. a couple things.

  287. I thought it was worth mentioning.

  288. There's some good clips

  289. on YouTube

  290. if you want to go watch this.

  291. I thought,

  292. wouldn't that be a shocker

  293. if I played a video here

  294. on Sunday morning?

  295. I've done that here

  296. in probably 100 years.

  297. But,

  298. the movie,

  299. Schindler's List,

  300. is a movie

  301. I just can't watch.

  302. Like,

  303. I watched it a long time ago.

  304. I can't turn it back on.

  305. But,

  306. it's about

  307. the Nazi death camps,

  308. the Holocaust.

  309. A true story,

  310. though,

  311. of a German

  312. named

  313. Oskar Schindler.

  314. And he was

  315. broken

  316. over what

  317. Germany was doing.

  318. And he

  319. took it personally

  320. to, like,

  321. work.

  322. And he ended up

  323. saving about

  324. the lives

  325. of 1,100 Jews

  326. from the Nazi

  327. death camps.

  328. And at the very

  329. end of the movie,

  330. this is what you can

  331. actually go and watch.

  332. It's,

  333. after all his

  334. sacrifice,

  335. all the stuff he did,

  336. all his labor,

  337. he's there

  338. with all those

  339. people that

  340. he was able

  341. to deliver

  342. and save.

  343. And he's with

  344. his really close

  345. Jewish friend,

  346. Stern.

  347. And,

  348. he's looking around

  349. at all of them.

  350. He says,

  351. he looks at his body

  352. and says,

  353. I could have gotten

  354. more out.

  355. I could have

  356. gotten more out.

  357. If I had just

  358. done this,

  359. I could have

  360. done more.

  361. And his friend

  362. is so gracious.

  363. He's like,

  364. look,

  365. you did so much.

  366. There will be

  367. generations of

  368. people because

  369. of what you did.

  370. And he looks

  371. at his car

  372. and he goes,

  373. what about this

  374. car?

  375. This car could

  376. have been 10

  377. more people.

  378. Why did I keep

  379. this car?

  380. And then he said,

  381. I had so much

  382. money.

  383. If I just had

  384. a little bit

  385. more money,

  386. I could have

  387. gotten more

  388. people out.

  389. And he says,

  390. I wasted

  391. so much money.

  392. And he just

  393. breaks down

  394. crying unconsolably

  395. like in front

  396. of all these

  397. people.

  398. And his friend

  399. picks him up

  400. and he's like,

  401. hey,

  402. you did this.

  403. Look at their

  404. faces.

  405. Like,

  406. they're here.

  407. He pulls

  408. off his Nazi

  409. party pen.

  410. Like,

  411. this is gold.

  412. And he gives

  413. it to him.

  414. Like,

  415. this could be

  416. two more

  417. people.

  418. Use this

  419. to get

  420. them out.

  421. But he was

  422. so,

  423. you know,

  424. as you know,

  425. in that time,

  426. Germans were

  427. taught not to

  428. show emotion,

  429. but he just

  430. loses it.

  431. And he kept

  432. just saying,

  433. I haven't done

  434. enough.

  435. I didn't do

  436. enough.

  437. And I'm not

  438. trying to

  439. produce some

  440. form of

  441. ungodly

  442. guilt on

  443. you,

  444. ungodly

  445. conviction.

  446. ungodly

  447. but none

  448. of us

  449. want to

  450. get to

  451. the

  452. finish

  453. line

  454. before

  455. the

  456. throne

  457. and

  458. just

  459. say,

  460. look at

  461. all my

  462. stuff.

  463. And look at

  464. all my

  465. possessions.

  466. You'll just

  467. say,

  468. why didn't I

  469. do more?

  470. Sort of a,

  471. I think John

  472. Piper calls it a

  473. heavenly regret.

  474. So not a

  475. sinful regret,

  476. a heavenly

  477. regret of like,

  478. ah,

  479. like,

  480. if I knew

  481. that this was

  482. where things

  483. were going,

  484. like,

  485. I just

  486. would not

  487. have

  488. squandered

  489. so much.

  490. But Jesus

  491. says,

  492. do not lay

  493. for yourselves

  494. treasures on

  495. the earth

  496. where moth

  497. and dust

  498. destroy

  499. and where

  500. thieves break

  501. in and steal,

  502. but lay up

  503. for yourselves

  504. treasures that

  505. are in heaven.

  506. That is the

  507. goal.

  508. But then he

  509. says,

  510. where your

  511. treasure is,

  512. there your

  513. heart's going

  514. to be also.

  515. You're going

  516. to see it

  517. on display.

  518. So,

  519. as I said

  520. last week

  521. from that one

  522. missionary,

  523. he said,

  524. only one

  525. life,

  526. and it

  527. will soon

  528. be passed

  529. and only

  530. what's done

  531. for Christ

  532. will last.

  533. And then

  534. lastly,

  535. in application

  536. of this,

  537. we can rest

  538. bringing it

  539. all into

  540. Christ,

  541. okay?

  542. We see

  543. in the

  544. Gospels

  545. that Jesus

  546. was very

  547. aware of

  548. the providential

  549. time that

  550. he was here

  551. on earth.

  552. He was

  553. aware of

  554. the Kairos.

  555. He said,

  556. there were

  557. times that

  558. people wanted

  559. to kill

  560. him and

  561. he said,

  562. my hour

  563. has not

  564. yet come.

  565. My Kairos,

  566. my time

  567. has not

  568. yet come.

  569. And then

  570. eventually,

  571. when he

  572. had died

  573. and breathed

  574. his last,

  575. he said,

  576. it is

  577. finished.

  578. It is

  579. done.

  580. And like

  581. this one

  582. verse in

  583. John 17

  584. is one

  585. that I,

  586. man,

  587. I really

  588. hope on

  589. my deathbed,

  590. if I make it

  591. to a deathbed

  592. and don't

  593. die in some

  594. crazy other

  595. way,

  596. that I think

  597. this verse

  598. haunts me

  599. just about

  600. more than

  601. any.

  602. But Jesus

  603. says,

  604. Father,

  605. he's praying

  606. like the

  607. hour has

  608. come,

  609. glorify your

  610. son,

  611. the son

  612. may glorify

  613. you,

  614. having

  615. accomplished

  616. the work

  617. that you

  618. gave me

  619. to do.

  620. He was

  621. done so

  622. he could

  623. go and

  624. rest,

  625. right?

  626. So even

  627. though we

  628. have squandered

  629. so much

  630. time,

  631. ridiculous

  632. things that

  633. we do

  634. with our

  635. time,

  636. me too,

  637. our cell

  638. phones don't

  639. help.

  640. So if

  641. you drop

  642. it in

  643. the

  644. commode,

  645. just rejoice

  646. for the

  647. 30 minutes

  648. that you're

  649. going to

  650. have before

  651. you fix

  652. it with

  653. rice.

  654. The good

  655. news is

  656. that all

  657. the time

  658. we've

  659. wasted is

  660. not going

  661. to bear

  662. witness against

  663. us on

  664. the judgment

  665. day if

  666. we have

  667. Christ,

  668. because he

  669. was faithful.

  670. He saved

  671. us.

  672. We don't

  673. have to pay

  674. him back

  675. for what

  676. he did,

  677. but if we

  678. do belong

  679. to Christ,

  680. it's going

  681. to create

  682. a holy

  683. desire in

  684. us to

  685. want,

  686. to redeem

  687. the time

  688. for eternity.

  689. We're going

  690. to desire

  691. that.

  692. Make the

  693. best use

  694. of the

  695. time and

  696. strive for

  697. that daily.

  698. It's not

  699. about the

  700. here and

  701. now.

  702. So just

  703. prepare

  704. yourself

  705. for the

  706. bigger picture,

  707. for us

  708. going to

  709. be in

  710. the Father's

  711. presence

  712. forever.

  713. I'll stop

  714. there.

  715. Yeah.

  716. So much

  717. more to say

  718. on all that.

  719. Each one of

  720. those could

  721. be its own

  722. thing,

  723. but let's

  724. pray together

  725. and then

  726. we'll respond

  727. in song.

  728. Let's pray

  729. together and

  730. respond in song.
