  1. Last week we saw that Jude, or Judas if you recall, his name in Greek, that he is the half-brother of Jesus and the brother of James.

  2. He wanted to write this letter to the church about the gospel and the beauties therein.

  3. But in his own words, he was constrained, or he found it necessary to write to them instead that they ought to contend for the faith in verse 3.

  4. He felt constrained because the occasion demanded it.

  5. The occasion is many false teachers are perverting the grace of God so as to allow sensuality.

  6. We see that in verse 4.

  7. And if you recall, I mentioned that these false teachers are antinomians of some kind.

  8. They are anti-law.

  9. They do not submit to Christ.

  10. Rather, they deny his lordship by their lifestyle.

  11. They do what they want, when they want, and how they want, with no regard for God.

  12. And Jude's charge to us in this scenario, to his audience at the time, is to contend for the faith.

  13. This is the main exhortation that runs throughout this entire letter.

  14. And again, Jude does not explicitly explain how to contend for the faith until verses 17 through 23, which we will cover in a couple weeks.

  15. But rather, Jude goes on to explain the threat that these false teachers pose in verse 4.

  16. They threaten to destroy the very gospel which we proclaim by distorting it.

  17. A watered-down gospel being no gospel at all.

  18. That is the threat that false teachers pose that we saw last week.

  19. So we saw that threat, but now we are primarily going to see Jude describe the future and what it holds for these false teachers, for these apostates.

  20. And so picking back up in verse 5, Jude writes,

  21. Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it,

  22. that the Lord who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

  23. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority but left their proper dwelling,

  24. He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.

  25. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities,

  26. which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire,

  27. just as they serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

  28. So I have two applications today which will serve as our outline.

  29. Number one, know your Old Testament well.

  30. And number two, consider the fool's end.

  31. So application number one, know your Old Testament well.

  32. This section of Jude's letter flows out of his desire to remind.

  33. He wants to remind his true Christian audience of truths concerning the Old Testament.

  34. Namely, he wants them to understand a pattern, a pattern of false teachers.

  35. And in typical Jewish fashion, he does so in rapid typological examples.

  36. He mentions the Exodus generation, the rebellious angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah.

  37. These three serve as templates to help us understand what the end holds for false teachers.

  38. And these three examples will also hint at a description of the false teachers,

  39. which Jude will describe them more fully next week in our text.

  40. But even now, he's beginning to show us what they are really like,

  41. what they really do, who they really are.

  42. And so again, verse 5, Jude assumes much of his audience.

  43. Again, last week, he assumed his audience was familiar with the doctrines of divine election and reprobation.

  44. This week, he assumes his audience is familiar with the Old Testament.

  45. And frankly, the word familiar is a severe understatement.

  46. He says in verse 5,

  47. I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that's how your ESV translate it.

  48. The Greek word for once is the same word used in verse 3 to describe the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

  49. So my translation reads this way,

  50. you who once for all know this.

  51. So there seems to be this comprehensive knowledge,

  52. this very detailed, deep, intimate knowledge of the Old Testament

  53. that Jude is assuming the church knows.

  54. And not just the stories, but the theological significance of those stories.

  55. They know their Old Testament well.

  56. And Jude assumes this.

  57. So we should ensure these things are very well known to us.

  58. Not just the details of the story, but what it means, the significance, the theological significance.

  59. But just in case all these stories are maybe blurry in your mind,

  60. or you can't quite recall what's going on in these references,

  61. we'll run through those quickly.

  62. So in verse 5, the second half of verse 5,

  63. we see that the Lord saved the people out of the land of Egypt,

  64. and afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

  65. So Jude here is not quoting a particular text,

  66. but is summarizing a large number of texts that talk about the Exodus event.

  67. Biblical texts like the Pentateuch,

  68. and even the prophets who think back on the Exodus.

  69. And this great historical act of the Exodus,

  70. when God saved Israel out of slavery in Egypt,

  71. has always served biblically as a picture of salvation and judgment.

  72. God judged Pharaoh along with Egypt while saving and calling Israel to himself.

  73. You have the Egyptians who are outside of God's people,

  74. who are cut off,

  75. versus the Israelites who are God's people.

  76. They are inside the faith.

  77. But I don't think Jude is referring to the Egyptians.

  78. Remember, Jude is addressing people who claim to be of the faith,

  79. who claim to be Christians,

  80. who are apostates.

  81. So I think Jude has in mind apostates from the Exodus account,

  82. and of which, frankly, there are an abundance.

  83. You can take your pick.

  84. There were those who,

  85. while Moses is up on the mount receiving the law,

  86. who rose up to play, is the expression,

  87. and they worshipped the golden calf.

  88. They were guilty of idolatry as they worshipped this golden calf,

  89. and rose up to play being a euphemistic phrase,

  90. meaning they were committing mass adultery.

  91. And the interesting thing here is you will often hear Exodus 32

  92. preached as if these people reverted back to paganism

  93. by worshipping the golden calf,

  94. as if they just decided to abandon God altogether,

  95. you know, that they rejected him.

  96. But listen to Exodus 32, verses 4 through 6 carefully.

    Exodus 32:4–6

  97. Moses writes,

  98. And Aaron received the gold from their hand

  99. and fashioned it with a graving tool

  100. and made a golden calf.

  101. And the crowd said,

  102. listen to this,

  103. These are your gods, O Israel,

  104. who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

  105. And in verse 5,

  106. Aaron refers to this golden calf as Yahweh.

  107. He uses the covenant name for the Israel God

  108. to refer to this image.

  109. So Aaron is saying to the people,

  110. The golden calf is Yahweh.

  111. So they thought they were worshipping the one true God

  112. who led them out of Egypt,

  113. when in fact they were doing anything but.

  114. So they did revert to paganism in one sense,

  115. their pagan practices,

  116. their pagan ideas,

  117. but they tried to blend it in

  118. with worshipping the one true God,

  119. which never goes well.

  120. In their claim of worshipping Yahweh,

  121. they dishonor Him

  122. by practicing lawlessness,

  123. sexual immorality,

  124. and idolatry.

  125. False teaching leads to these things.

  126. And this sounds like Jude 4 from last week.

  127. Jude accuses the false teachers in his letter

  128. of being those who pervert the grace of our God

  129. into sensuality.

  130. So going back to Exodus,

  131. as a result,

  132. God commanded the men who repented.

  133. We see this in Exodus 32, 27-28.

  134. He commands them and he says to them,

  135. To put on their sword

  136. and go to and fro,

  137. gate to gate,

  138. throughout the camp.

  139. Each of you kill his brother

  140. and his companion

  141. and his neighbor.

  142. And the sons of Levi

  143. did according to the word of Moses.

  144. And that day about 3,000 men fell.

  145. Divine judgment on the apostate.

  146. There are also those in Numbers 14,

  147. which is still referring to

  148. the Exodus wilderness wanderings.

  149. These people,

  150. who again are claiming to be in the faith,

  151. claiming to be the people of God,

  152. these people doubted God.

  153. And after Israel had sent spies

  154. to check out the promised land

  155. in Numbers 13,

  156. the Israelites become fearful

  157. of fighting the giant inhabitants.

  158. And as a result,

  159. we see in Numbers 14, verse 2,

    Numbers 14:2

  160. that they grumbled

  161. and demanded that they elect

  162. new leaders

  163. to lead them back to Egypt,

  164. back to slavery,

  165. back to oppression,

  166. back to wickedness,

  167. all because they doubted God.

  168. So these people were so set

  169. on this rebellion

  170. to the point

  171. that they wanted to murder,

  172. to stone the faithful,

  173. Joshua and Moses,

  174. in Numbers 14, verse 10.

    Numbers 14:10

  175. And in verse 11,

  176. the Lord responds,

  177. he says to Moses,

  178. how long will these people,

  179. the Israelites,

  180. how long will these people despise me?

  181. And how long will they not believe in me

  182. in spite of all the signs

  183. that I have done among them?

  184. So Jude very well could have been thinking

  185. of this text specifically

  186. because he refers to those

  187. who did not believe

  188. and God accuses these doubters

  189. of disbelief.

  190. It's hard to be too dogmatic

  191. about exactly what he has in mind

  192. here in the Exodus account.

  193. But nonetheless,

  194. the point remains

  195. that here we have the people

  196. from the Exodus generation

  197. who did not believe.

  198. And as a result,

  199. their entire generation

  200. was not allowed to enter

  201. the promised land

  202. with, of course,

  203. a few exceptions.

  204. They were judged by God

  205. and perished in the wilderness.

  206. So the Exodus generation

  207. is the first example.

  208. The second example

  209. is very interesting.

  210. Jude references

  211. a suetopigraphal work,

  212. just meaning false writings.

  213. So look at verse 6.

  214. He says,

  215. and the angels

  216. who did not stay

  217. within their own position

  218. of authority,

  219. but left their proper dwelling,

  220. he has kept in eternal chains

  221. under gloomy darkness

  222. until the judgment

  223. of the great day.

  224. So this is not a story

  225. you will find

  226. anywhere in the Bible.

  227. It's a reference,

  228. actually,

  229. to 1 Enoch,

  230. specifically the Book

  231. of the Watchers,

  232. which is a part

  233. of 1 Enoch.

  234. 1 Enoch was a very

  235. well-known book

  236. in the Greco-Roman world,

  237. specifically to Jews.

  238. It's written roughly

  239. 2nd century B.C.

  240. So it's written

  241. between the Old

  242. and New Testaments.

  243. And to be clear,

  244. Enoch from the Bible,

  245. from the book of Genesis,

  246. is not the true author,

  247. hence why it's called

  248. a suetopigrapha,

  249. false writing.

  250. He didn't actually write it.

  251. But it's alluded to

  252. in our text today

  253. in verse 6,

  254. and it's quoted

  255. specifically

  256. in Jude 14 through 15,

  257. which we'll see

  258. in a few weeks.

  259. And just without

  260. rattling them,

  261. it's alluded to

  262. throughout the New Testament

  263. all over.

  264. So it's a very popular work,

  265. a very well-known work,

  266. that interacts

  267. with the Bible

  268. to a great extent.

  269. Now, to be clear,

  270. it's not

  271. canonical scripture.

  272. That's really important.

  273. It's not the Word of God.

  274. It is not authoritative.

  275. But it's really helpful

  276. because it helps us

  277. understand Jewish thought,

  278. Jewish interpretation.

  279. It helps us see

  280. what they thought

  281. about the Bible

  282. at that time.

  283. And it is referenced

  284. in the Bible,

  285. so it's good to know

  286. what they're referencing.

  287. So in the Book of the Watchers,

  288. Jude is interacting

  289. with a section

  290. in which Enoch,

  291. supposedly Enoch,

  292. is retelling

  293. Genesis 6,

  294. 1 through 4.

  295. So the biblical,

  296. the canonical

  297. Genesis 6,

  298. 1 through 4,

  299. so this,

  300. the Word of God,

  301. says this,

  302. when man began

  303. to multiply

  304. on the face

  305. of the land

  306. and daughters

  307. were born to them,

  308. the sons of God

  309. saw that the daughters

  310. of man were attractive

  311. and they took

  312. as their wives

  313. any they chose.

  314. Then the Lord said,

  315. My spirit shall not

  316. abide in man forever,

  317. for he is flesh.

  318. His days shall be

  319. a hundred and twenty years.

  320. The Nephilim

  321. were on the earth

  322. in those days

  323. and also afterward

  324. the sons of God

  325. came into the daughters

  326. of man

  327. and they bore

  328. children to them.

  329. These were the mighty

  330. men of old,

  331. the men of renown.

  332. There's two cups.

  333. Okay.

  334. Now the author

  335. of Enoch

  336. expands this text

  337. in Genesis

  338. with additional

  339. details.

  340. So much debate

  341. has been stirred

  342. around the identity

  343. of these sons of God.

  344. The most popular,

  345. the most consistent

  346. interpretation

  347. throughout history

  348. has been that

  349. the sons of God

  350. refer to angels.

  351. who impregnated

  352. these women.

  353. Angels who

  354. left heaven,

  355. came down,

  356. slept with women,

  357. and bore offspring.

  358. And in 1 Enoch

  359. we see this

  360. interpretation play out.

  361. His writing

  362. spells it out.

  363. These are not men

  364. in the Enochic version,

  365. but rather angels.

  366. And Jude seems

  367. to agree

  368. with that interpretation

  369. under the inspiration

  370. of the Holy Spirit.

  371. Jude 6 says,

  372. right,

  373. and the angels.

  374. So Jude seems

  375. to be telling us

  376. through the Spirit

  377. that that in fact

  378. is the correct

  379. interpretation

  380. of Genesis 6,

  381. that they were

  382. in fact angels.

  383. And some will say,

  384. well,

  385. that can't be.

  386. Did not Jesus say

  387. that we will be

  388. like the angels

  389. and thus not given

  390. in marriage?

  391. Right?

  392. He says this in Matthew

    Matthew 22:29–30

  393. 22 verses 29 to 30

  394. implying that

  395. angels can't reproduce.

  396. Angels don't do

  397. that kind of thing.

  398. But notice Jesus

  399. is saying

  400. the angels in heaven

  401. are not given

  402. in marriage.

  403. These angels

  404. stay in their lane

  405. and do as they are told.

  406. Whereas the angels

  407. that Jude refers to

  408. have,

  409. as Jude says,

  410. left their proper dwelling.

  411. They no longer

  412. abide in heaven.

  413. They no longer

  414. obey God,

  415. but they sought out

  416. the attractive

  417. daughters of man.

  418. So Enoch put it

  419. this way

  420. in his rewriting.

  421. He says,

  422. And it came to pass

  423. when the children

  424. of men

  425. had multiplied

  426. that in those days

  427. were born unto them

  428. beautiful and comely

  429. daughters.

  430. And the angels,

  431. the children of heaven,

  432. saw and lusted

  433. after them

  434. and said to one another,

  435. Come,

  436. let us choose us wives

  437. from among the children

  438. of men

  439. and beget us children.

  440. So these angels

  441. who fall,

  442. these angels who rebel,

  443. these demons,

  444. you might say,

  445. they leave heaven

  446. to pursue their lusts

  447. and in leaving heaven

  448. their proper dwelling,

  449. they fall into sin.

  450. So what happened

  451. to them after that?

  452. Well,

  453. according to both

  454. Enoch and Jude,

  455. God imprisons them.

  456. Your ESV will say

  457. that these angels

  458. did not stay

  459. within their own

  460. position of authority,

  461. whereas the Greek

  462. literally reads

  463. the angels

  464. who did not keep

  465. to their domain.

  466. So here Jude

  467. creates a play

  468. on words.

  469. These angels

  470. who did not obey God,

  471. who did not keep

  472. to their proper place,

  473. God has found

  474. a fitting punishment.

  475. He says in verse 6,

  476. God has kept them

  477. in eternal chains

  478. under gloomy darkness

  479. until the judgment

  480. of the great day.

  481. These rebellious angels

  482. are not running around

  483. the world today

  484. causing havoc.

  485. Jude is clear.

  486. These rebellious angels

  487. are being held

  488. in captivity

  489. for the day

  490. of judgment.

  491. Though,

  492. of course,

  493. there are other demons

  494. who are running around

  495. as we can read about

  496. in the Gospels.

  497. And now this phrase,

  498. gloomy darkness

  499. in Jude 6,

  500. this phrase is used

  501. extensively

  502. in Greco-Roman literature

  503. and it always refers

  504. to the underworld,

  505. a type of hell.

  506. And the great day

  507. that Jude talks about,

  508. of course,

  509. speaks to when Christ

  510. will return

  511. to judge his elect

  512. graciously

  513. and to judge

  514. the wicked

  515. justly.

  516. So by now,

  517. you should be noticing

  518. the theme

  519. in these examples.

  520. Both the Exodus

  521. generation

  522. of Israel

  523. and the rebellious angels

  524. turned away from God

  525. to worship

  526. something else.

  527. and in both cases

  528. it resulted in unbelief

  529. and sexual

  530. perversion.

  531. Jude drives the point

  532. home with one

  533. other similar

  534. example.

  535. He writes in verse 7,

  536. just as Sodom

  537. and Gomorrah

  538. and the surrounding cities,

  539. which likewise

  540. indulged

  541. in sexual immorality

  542. and pursued

  543. unnatural

  544. desire.

  545. The angels

  546. pursued

  547. unnatural desires

  548. by seeking

  549. sexual relationships

  550. with mankind

  551. just as

  552. the citizens

  553. of Sodom

  554. and Gomorrah

  555. saw unnatural

  556. relationships,

  557. namely homosexuality.

  558. So again,

  559. let's remind ourselves

  560. of this story

  561. briefly.

  562. In Genesis

    Genesis 18:20

  563. chapter 18,

  564. verse 20,

  565. Moses writes,

  566. Then the Lord

  567. said,

  568. Because the outcry

  569. against Sodom

  570. and Gomorrah

  571. is great,

  572. and their sin

  573. is very grave.

  574. I will go down

  575. to see whether

  576. they have done

  577. altogether

  578. according to the

  579. outcry that has

  580. come to me,

  581. and if not,

  582. I will know.

  583. So after God

  584. declares this

  585. to Abraham,

  586. Abraham intercedes

  587. on behalf

  588. of his nephew

  589. Lot,

  590. who lives

  591. in Sodom.

  592. And you all

  593. know the deal.

  594. God says

  595. he will spare

  596. Sodom if there

  597. are but ten

  598. righteous persons

  599. in that city.

  600. But the story

  601. continues in

  602. Genesis chapter 19,

    Genesis 19:1–8

  603. verses 1 through 8.

  604. And go ahead

  605. and turn there

  606. with me,

  607. because I want you

  608. to see this

  609. for yourselves.

  610. It hits a little

  611. differently as you

  612. read it.

  613. So Genesis chapter 19,

    Genesis 19:1–8

  614. verses 1 through 8.

  615. So the outcry is

  616. great against Sodom

  617. and Gomorrah.

  618. Abraham is attempting

  619. to intercede

  620. to save his nephew

  621. Lot.

  622. And so God

  623. sends some angels

  624. to Sodom.

  625. And so Genesis

    Genesis 19:1

  626. chapter 19,

  627. verse 1,

  628. we see

  629. the two angels

  630. came to Sodom

  631. in the evening.

  632. And Lot was

  633. sitting in the

  634. gate of Sodom.

  635. When Lot saw

  636. them, he rose

  637. to meet them

  638. and bowed

  639. himself with

  640. his face

  641. to the earth

  642. and said,

  643. My lords,

  644. please turn aside

  645. to your servant's

  646. house and spend

  647. the night

  648. and wash your

  649. feet.

  650. Then you may

  651. rise up early

  652. and go on

  653. your way.

  654. They said,

  655. No, we will

  656. spend the night

  657. in the town

  658. square.

  659. But Lot

  660. pressed them

  661. strongly.

  662. So they turned

  663. aside to him

  664. and entered

  665. his house.

  666. And he made

  667. them a feast

  668. and baked them

  669. unleavened bread

  670. and they ate.

  671. But before they

  672. lay down,

  673. the men of the

  674. city, the men

  675. of Sodom,

  676. both young

  677. and old,

  678. all the people

  679. to the last

  680. man,

  681. surrounded the

  682. house.

  683. And they

  684. called to Lot,

  685. Where are the

  686. men who came

  687. to you tonight?

  688. Bring them

  689. out to us

  690. that we

  691. may know

  692. them.

  693. And Lot

  694. went out

  695. to the men

  696. at the

  697. entrance,

  698. shut the

  699. door after

  700. him and

  701. said,

  702. I beg you

  703. brothers,

  704. do not

  705. act so

  706. wickedly.

  707. Behold,

  708. I have

  709. two daughters

  710. who have

  711. not known

  712. any man.

  713. Let me

  714. bring them

  715. out to you

  716. and do

  717. to them

  718. as you

  719. please.

  720. Only do

  721. nothing

  722. to these

  723. men,

  724. for they

  725. have come

  726. under the

  727. shelter

  728. of my

  729. roof.

  730. So notice

  731. the similarities

  732. for why Jude

  733. is using

  734. this passage.

  735. These men

  736. of Sodom

  737. were seeking

  738. what they

  739. thought would

  740. be two

  741. men,

  742. so they're

  743. guilty of

  744. homosexual

  745. desires.

  746. But we

  747. saw in

  748. verse 1

  749. that these

  750. two men

  751. are actually

  752. angels.

  753. So the

  754. story of

  755. Sodom and

  756. Gomorrah

  757. is very

  758. similar to

  759. the one

  760. Jude referenced

  761. about the

  762. rebellious

  763. angels.

  764. Unnatural

  765. relations,

  766. sexual

  767. perversions,

  768. and uncontrolled

  769. licentiousness

  770. describe all

  771. these stories.

  772. And this

  773. story in

  774. Genesis in

  775. particular is

  776. gut-wrenching

  777. because as

  778. the reader we

  779. can already

  780. see what is

  781. coming from

  782. a mile away.

  783. The angels

  784. came intending

  785. to stay

  786. downtown,

  787. but Lot

  788. begs them to

  789. do otherwise

  790. because he

  791. knows what

  792. happens downtown.

  793. He knows how

  794. wicked his

  795. city is.

  796. And even

  797. though Lot

  798. successfully gets

  799. them to stay

  800. at his home,

  801. it doesn't

  802. spare them

  803. this

  804. confrontation,

  805. Moses makes

  806. it plain,

  807. every single

  808. male without

  809. exception comes

  810. to surround

  811. Lot's

  812. home.

  813. Now think

  814. about what

  815. that implies.

  816. I mean,

  817. these men

  818. of Sodom

  819. must have

  820. seen the

  821. angels enter

  822. at the

  823. gates,

  824. and they

  825. must have

  826. talked up

  827. a big

  828. perverted

  829. hub-hub

  830. to all the

  831. other men

  832. in the

  833. city,

  834. something to

  835. arouse all

  836. of them

  837. that they

  838. would all

  839. get together

  840. and head

  841. to this

  842. house.

  843. What kind

  844. of city

  845. is that?

  846. And what's

  847. perhaps the

  848. most astonishing,

  849. the most

  850. disheartening,

  851. is the fact

  852. that Lot

  853. acts in

  854. wickedness

  855. himself to

  856. protect these

  857. angels.

  858. He offers

  859. up his

  860. virgin daughters

  861. as a sort

  862. of compensation.

  863. I mean,

  864. how sick

  865. and perverted

  866. is that?

  867. And so

  868. you know

  869. how the

  870. famous story

  871. ends.

  872. chapter 19

  873. verses 24

  874. through 25

  875. says,

  876. Then the

  877. Lord rained

  878. on Sodom

  879. and Gomorrah

  880. sulfur and

  881. fire from

  882. the Lord

  883. out of

  884. heaven,

  885. and he

  886. overthrew

  887. those cities

  888. and all

  889. the valley

  890. and all

  891. the inhabitants

  892. of the

  893. cities,

  894. even what

  895. grew on

  896. the ground.

  897. Nothing

  898. could be

  899. left,

  900. no stone

  901. unturned.

  902. This level

  903. of wickedness,

  904. apart from

  905. any kind

  906. of repentance,

  907. demanded

  908. swift and

  909. immediate

  910. judgment

  911. from God

  912. who judged

  913. them justly.

  914. And here's

  915. the thing,

  916. too,

  917. it wasn't

  918. merely this

  919. one incident

  920. of isolated

  921. homosexual

  922. behavior.

  923. It was a

  924. lifestyle

  925. of rebellion.

  926. This sin

  927. did not just

  928. happen,

  929. but it was

  930. celebrated,

  931. it was practiced,

  932. and it was

  933. normal for

  934. these cities.

  935. And the

  936. prophet Ezekiel

  937. makes it

  938. clear that

  939. there were

  940. a number

  941. of issues

  942. just beyond

  943. this perversion.

  944. He says

  945. in chapter

  946. 16,

  947. verse 49

  948. through 50,

  949. Behold,

  950. this was

  951. the sin

  952. of your

  953. sister Sodom.

  954. She and

  955. her daughters

  956. had pride,

  957. excess of

  958. food,

  959. and prosperous

  960. ease,

  961. but did not

  962. aid the poor

  963. and the needy.

  964. They were

  965. haughty and

  966. did an

  967. abomination

  968. before me,

  969. so I

  970. removed them

  971. when I

  972. saw it.

  973. So everything

  974. about these

  975. cities was

  976. backward.

  977. Everything

  978. they did

  979. demonstrates

  980. that they

  981. denied God

  982. as Lord

  983. over their

  984. life,

  985. much like

  986. the apostate

  987. teachers

  988. whom Jude

  989. confronts.

  990. So again,

  991. Jude assumed

  992. his readers

  993. knew their

  994. Old Testament

  995. very well.

  996. Hence,

  997. he's able to

  998. rapidly fire

  999. off these

  1000. examples with

  1001. very little

  1002. explanation.

  1003. He knows

  1004. his audience

  1005. understands

  1006. the significance

  1007. of these

  1008. references to

  1009. the detail.

  1010. And if there's

  1011. anyone here

  1012. today who

  1013. had no

  1014. idea what

  1015. Jude was

  1016. referencing in

  1017. the Old

  1018. Testament,

  1019. then that

  1020. should serve

  1021. as a bit

  1022. of a wake-up

  1023. call.

  1024. It's time

  1025. to get

  1026. serious about

  1027. studying God's

  1028. Word and

  1029. not just the

  1030. New Testament,

  1031. but the

  1032. Old,

  1033. which our

  1034. Bible is

  1035. predominantly

  1036. made up

  1037. of.

  1038. It's 75%

  1039. of our

  1040. Bible.

  1041. It's not a

  1042. portion of

  1043. the Bible

  1044. that we

  1045. should unhitch

  1046. from our

  1047. Christian living.

  1048. It's not a

  1049. portion of

  1050. the Bible

  1051. that, as

  1052. some would

  1053. say, is

  1054. just so

  1055. irrelevant,

  1056. which is an

  1057. erroneous

  1058. claim.

  1059. But the

  1060. Old Testament

  1061. is extremely

  1062. relevant for

  1063. today.

  1064. Paul told

  1065. Timothy in

  1066. 2 Timothy

  1067. 3.16,

  1068. he said,

  1069. all Scripture

  1070. is breathed

  1071. out by God

  1072. and profitable

  1073. for teaching,

  1074. for reproof,

  1075. for correction,

  1076. for training

  1077. in righteousness.

  1078. In Jesus'

  1079. high priestly

  1080. prayer in

  1081. John 17.17,

  1082. he says,

  1083. sanctify them

  1084. in the

  1085. truth.

  1086. Your

  1087. word is

  1088. truth.

  1089. And the

  1090. crazy thing

  1091. we often

  1092. forget about

  1093. both those

  1094. New Testament

  1095. passages is

  1096. that they

  1097. are primarily

  1098. talking about

  1099. the Old

  1100. Testament.

  1101. That's

  1102. primarily

  1103. what they

  1104. had.

  1105. In Jesus'

  1106. case,

  1107. that's all

  1108. he had.

  1109. So he's

  1110. saying,

  1111. sanctify them

  1112. in the

  1113. Old Testament.

  1114. Your Old

  1115. Testament is

  1116. truth.

  1117. So you'll

  1118. never understand

  1119. your New

  1120. Testament apart

  1121. from a deep,

  1122. intimate knowledge

  1123. of the Old

  1124. Testament.

  1125. And more

  1126. importantly,

  1127. you will not

  1128. have a deep

  1129. and intimate

  1130. knowledge and

  1131. understanding

  1132. of God

  1133. because you're

  1134. ignoring 75%

  1135. of what he

  1136. has to

  1137. tell you.

  1138. So I

  1139. would pray

  1140. just spend

  1141. time,

  1142. study how

  1143. to study

  1144. the Old

  1145. Testament if

  1146. that's what

  1147. it takes,

  1148. but spend

  1149. time in

  1150. the Old

  1151. Testament.

  1152. There is

  1153. life,

  1154. goodness,

  1155. beauty,

  1156. treasures there

  1157. to behold.

  1158. And so you

  1159. might be

  1160. wondering,

  1161. okay, I

  1162. get it,

  1163. the Old

  1164. Testament is

  1165. supposed to

  1166. matter,

  1167. but what are

  1168. all these

  1169. examples from

  1170. Jude meant

  1171. for?

  1172. What is

  1173. Jude trying

  1174. to accomplish?

  1175. How is

  1176. all this

  1177. talk about

  1178. apostates

  1179. sanctifying

  1180. me today?

  1181. Well, the

  1182. second half

  1183. of verse

  1184. 7 in

  1185. Jude, go

  1186. back there

  1187. with me,

  1188. the second

  1189. half of

  1190. Jude in

  1191. verse 7,

  1192. he says

  1193. of all

  1194. three

  1195. examples,

  1196. he says

  1197. they serve

  1198. as an

  1199. example by

  1200. undergoing a

  1201. punishment

  1202. of eternal

  1203. fire.

  1204. So these

  1205. apostates,

  1206. these three

  1207. examples from

  1208. the Old

  1209. Testament,

  1210. they serve

  1211. as an

  1212. example to

  1213. the church

  1214. by undergoing

  1215. a punishment

  1216. of eternal

  1217. fire.

  1218. So not an

  1219. example to be

  1220. followed,

  1221. but as a

  1222. warning.

  1223. The emphasis

  1224. in Jude 5

  1225. through 7,

  1226. which you've

  1227. probably seen

  1228. by now,

  1229. is that in

  1230. all three

  1231. cases,

  1232. not only was

  1233. there false

  1234. teaching,

  1235. not only was

  1236. there perversion

  1237. of the

  1238. faith,

  1239. but in

  1240. all three

  1241. cases they

  1242. were judged,

  1243. judged with

  1244. condemnation by

  1245. our righteous

  1246. God.

  1247. So this

  1248. leads us to

  1249. our second

  1250. application.

  1251. Application

  1252. number two,

  1253. consider the

  1254. fool's

  1255. end.

  1256. I'm going

  1257. to blur our

  1258. first application

  1259. into this

  1260. one.

  1261. If you know

  1262. your Old

  1263. Testament well,

  1264. or your New

  1265. Testament for

  1266. that matter,

  1267. then you're

  1268. not surprised

  1269. to hear me

  1270. call these

  1271. apostates

  1272. fools.

  1273. In the New

  1274. Testament,

  1275. Jesus ends

  1276. his entire

  1277. Sermon on

  1278. the Mount

  1279. by contrasting

  1280. the wise

  1281. man who

  1282. builds his

  1283. house on

  1284. the rock,

  1285. referring to

  1286. believers,

  1287. with the

  1288. fool who

  1289. builds his

  1290. house on

  1291. the sand,

  1292. referring to

  1293. the one who

  1294. does not

  1295. repent,

  1296. the one who

  1297. does not

  1298. believe.

  1299. And we

  1300. see in

  1301. Matthew 7

    Matthew 7:24–27

  1302. verse 24

  1303. to 27

  1304. that the

  1305. fool who

  1306. builds his

  1307. house on

  1308. the sand

  1309. is destroyed

  1310. when God

  1311. comes to

  1312. judge the

  1313. world.

  1314. He's destroyed

  1315. by the winds,

  1316. the floods,

  1317. and the

  1318. rains.

  1319. So Jesus,

  1320. being the

  1321. absolute most

  1322. knowledgeable

  1323. person of

  1324. the Old

  1325. Testament,

  1326. makes a

  1327. very typical

  1328. Old Testament

  1329. argument,

  1330. compares,

  1331. he contrasts

  1332. the way of

  1333. the wise,

  1334. the way of

  1335. the fool.

  1336. Psalm chapter

    Psalms 1:1–2

  1337. 1 verses 1

  1338. through 2,

  1339. it's pretty

  1340. well known

  1341. here.

  1342. Right away

  1343. the psalmist

  1344. creates this

  1345. contrast.

  1346. He writes,

  1347. blessed is

  1348. the man,

  1349. so this man's

  1350. blessed,

  1351. he's the wise

  1352. man,

  1353. the believer,

  1354. right?

  1355. Blessed is

  1356. the man

  1357. who walks

  1358. not in

  1359. the counsel

  1360. of the

  1361. wicked,

  1362. nor stands

  1363. in the

  1364. way of

  1365. sinners,

  1366. nor sits

  1367. in the

  1368. seat of

  1369. scoffers,

  1370. but his

  1371. delight is

  1372. in the

  1373. law of

  1374. the Lord,

  1375. and on

  1376. his law

  1377. he meditates

  1378. day and

  1379. night.

  1380. Do you

  1381. see that

  1382. contrast?

  1383. The

  1384. blessed

  1385. man

  1386. opposed

  1387. to

  1388. the

  1389. wicked

  1390. man?

  1391. And

  1392. that psalm

  1393. ends with

  1394. a reflection

  1395. on the

  1396. way of

  1397. the

  1398. wicked

  1399. or the

  1400. fool,

  1401. as opposed

  1402. to the

  1403. way of

  1404. the

  1405. blessed.

  1406. chapter 1

  1407. verses 4

  1408. through 6

  1409. says,

  1410. the wicked

  1411. are not

  1412. so,

  1413. but are

  1414. like shaft

  1415. that the

  1416. wind drives

  1417. away.

  1418. That's

  1419. judgment

  1420. language.

  1421. Therefore,

  1422. the wicked

  1423. will not

  1424. stand in

  1425. the judgment,

  1426. nor sinners

  1427. in the

  1428. congregation

  1429. of the

  1430. righteous.

  1431. For the

  1432. Lord knows

  1433. the way

  1434. of the

  1435. righteous,

  1436. but the

  1437. way of

  1438. the wicked

  1439. will perish.

  1440. So there's

  1441. this contrast,

  1442. there's this

  1443. reflection

  1444. on where

  1445. the righteous

  1446. will end

  1447. and where

  1448. the wicked

  1449. will end.

  1450. In Proverbs

    Proverbs 1:8–19

  1451. chapter 1

  1452. verses 8

  1453. through 19,

  1454. I'll summarize,

  1455. but Solomon

  1456. warns his

  1457. son not

  1458. to join

  1459. the works

  1460. of the

  1461. wicked,

  1462. who desire

  1463. to steal

  1464. and murder.

  1465. And Solomon

  1466. concludes by

  1467. considering the

  1468. end of both.

  1469. He says in

  1470. verses 17

  1471. through 19,

  1472. but these

  1473. men,

  1474. referring to

  1475. the wicked,

  1476. but these

  1477. men lie

  1478. in wait

  1479. for their

  1480. own blood.

  1481. They set

  1482. an ambush

  1483. for their

  1484. own lives.

  1485. Such are

  1486. the ways

  1487. of everyone

  1488. who is

  1489. greedy

  1490. for unjust

  1491. gain.

  1492. It takes

  1493. away the

  1494. life of

  1495. its

  1496. possessor.

  1497. Simply put,

  1498. Solomon is

  1499. saying,

  1500. my son,

  1501. do not

  1502. go this

  1503. way because

  1504. you will

  1505. die

  1506. eternally.

  1507. So this

  1508. kind of

  1509. contrast,

  1510. this kind

  1511. of example

  1512. or warning

  1513. is laden

  1514. throughout

  1515. the entire

  1516. Bible.

  1517. and we

  1518. have to

  1519. be careful.

  1520. This

  1521. kind of

  1522. rhetoric

  1523. does not

  1524. mean we

  1525. go around

  1526. town like

  1527. a Pharisee

  1528. and point

  1529. out every

  1530. kind of

  1531. sinner and

  1532. publicly

  1533. thank God

  1534. we are

  1535. not like

  1536. them,

  1537. whether

  1538. they're a

  1539. tax collector,

  1540. adulterer,

  1541. murderer,

  1542. liar,

  1543. whoever.

  1544. That's not

  1545. what this

  1546. means.

  1547. If there

  1548. is one

  1549. reaction we

  1550. should have

  1551. to the

  1552. sinner,

  1553. knowing their

  1554. end,

  1555. knowing their

  1556. doom if

  1557. they don't

  1558. repent and

  1559. believe,

  1560. it should

  1561. be

  1562. compassion,

  1563. it should

  1564. be merciful,

  1565. loving,

  1566. and kind,

  1567. it should

  1568. especially

  1569. be hopeful.

  1570. So if you

  1571. paid a close

  1572. attention to

  1573. the examples

  1574. that Jude

  1575. shares,

  1576. you probably

  1577. noticed that

  1578. God showed

  1579. as much

  1580. grace in

  1581. those historical

  1582. moments as

  1583. he did

  1584. judgment.

  1585. In the

  1586. Exodus,

  1587. remember,

  1588. he saved

  1589. the people

  1590. out of

  1591. Egypt.

  1592. He spared

  1593. those who

  1594. repented.

  1595. In the

  1596. case of

  1597. Sodom and

  1598. Gomorrah,

  1599. Lot,

  1600. who acted

  1601. wickedly,

  1602. was spared.

  1603. So the

  1604. implication

  1605. for us

  1606. that even

  1607. the likes

  1608. of false

  1609. teachers,

  1610. there is

  1611. always hope

  1612. if they

  1613. repent and

  1614. believe in

  1615. Christ upon

  1616. hearing the

  1617. gospel.

  1618. I think of

  1619. the Apostle

  1620. Paul who

  1621. wrote most

  1622. of our

  1623. New Testament.

  1624. He denied

  1625. Christ and

  1626. attacked

  1627. Christians.

  1628. But upon

  1629. being confronted

  1630. with Christ,

  1631. being confronted

  1632. with the

  1633. gospel,

  1634. Paul repented

  1635. and became

  1636. one of the

  1637. greatest

  1638. Christians in

  1639. history.

  1640. So we

  1641. should not

  1642. bash these

  1643. people or

  1644. treat them

  1645. poorly or

  1646. think ourselves

  1647. better,

  1648. but we

  1649. should love

  1650. these people,

  1651. pray for

  1652. these people,

  1653. witness to

  1654. these people

  1655. with the

  1656. gospel.

  1657. So that

  1658. should be

  1659. our battle

  1660. cry to

  1661. any would-be

  1662. intruders,

  1663. any would-be

  1664. persecutors

  1665. from within.

  1666. And then

  1667. lastly,

  1668. there is

  1669. just one

  1670. closing

  1671. application.

  1672. I know

  1673. there are

  1674. only two,

  1675. but a

  1676. closing

  1677. application

  1678. application.

  1679. I'll just

  1680. tell you

  1681. this text

  1682. weighed heavily

  1683. this week

  1684. for me

  1685. because it's

  1686. a lot of

  1687. doom and

  1688. gloom.

  1689. It's a lot

  1690. of judgment

  1691. language.

  1692. And that's

  1693. a true reality

  1694. that we need

  1695. to be sober

  1696. and thinking

  1697. about and

  1698. praying through

  1699. and confronted

  1700. with.

  1701. This scripture

  1702. is profitable

  1703. for us to

  1704. consider.

  1705. It should

  1706. cause us

  1707. to evangelize,

  1708. cause us

  1709. to be broken

  1710. for the lost.

  1711. But I think

  1712. it's significant

  1713. that Jude

  1714. says to the

  1715. church who

  1716. knew the

  1717. Old Testament

  1718. so well

  1719. that he still

  1720. decides to

  1721. remind them

  1722. if they know

  1723. it so well

  1724. why do they

  1725. need a

  1726. reminder?

  1727. Because they're

  1728. people.

  1729. They're like

  1730. you and me.

  1731. They forget.

  1732. They're dumb.

  1733. They seek

  1734. witness left

  1735. and right.

  1736. And more

  1737. importantly,

  1738. they forget

  1739. who God

  1740. really is.

  1741. And so I think

  1742. it's important

  1743. that we remind

  1744. each other

  1745. not only of

  1746. the hard

  1747. truths about

  1748. judgment

  1749. and the fact

  1750. that God

  1751. is going

  1752. to punish

  1753. the wicked,

  1754. that that is

  1755. inevitable and

  1756. that is a

  1757. real eternal

  1758. reality.

  1759. But we should

  1760. also remind

  1761. ourselves that

  1762. this is just,

  1763. that this is

  1764. good,

  1765. and that God

  1766. is gracious

  1767. and kind to

  1768. save,

  1769. though we

  1770. don't deserve

  1771. it.

  1772. To remind

  1773. ourselves this

  1774. is not the

  1775. full picture,

  1776. but that God

  1777. is desiring to

  1778. save people if

  1779. they would only

  1780. repent and

  1781. believe.

  1782. And so that's

  1783. why I say we

  1784. have great hope

  1785. even for the

  1786. likes of false

  1787. teachers,

  1788. even for those

  1789. who know the

  1790. gospel,

  1791. have seemingly

  1792. rejected it,

  1793. even they are

  1794. not beyond

  1795. this grace if

  1796. they place

  1797. faith in

  1798. Christ.

  1799. So to that

  1800. end, let's

  1801. pray.
