  1. Angels, biblically speaking, are mediators of God's law.

  2. ! Acts 7 verse 53 refers to the received law,

    Acts 7:53

  3. ! That was given through angels.

  4. So anybody can tell you that there cannot be two captains of the same ship.

  5. There cannot be two supreme commanders of the same army.

  6. Jesus himself says in Matthew 6, 24,

  7. No one can serve two masters,

  8. for either he will hate the one and love the other,

  9. or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  10. You cannot serve God in money.

  11. So these false teachers are teaching against the law given by the angels from God

  12. because they want their authority to reign,

  13. their dreams to dictate the will of their followers.

  14. Essentially, they want to dethrone God and rule in his stead.

  15. And their followers are people from within the church

  16. who have been duped by these dreamers.

  17. And that should serve as a warning to all of us.

  18. When you have anyone approach you saying,

  19. I have had a prophetic dream or God told me something,

  20. you should immediately be cautious and on guard,

  21. regardless of whether they're a cessationist or a continuationist, right?

  22. And the way to test them is to see what they are saying is in accordance with Scripture.

  23. We know that from texts like Deuteronomy 18, 20 through 22,

  24. or Acts 17, 11.

  25. So, for example, if they dream a dream and they say to you that in that dream,

  26. someone told me, God is love.

  27. And then you search the Scriptures and you find 1 John 4, 8,

  28. which says, God is love.

  29. Well, you can be okay with that dream.

  30. But for me, you know, as a cautious cessationist,

  31. I would tell that person, you know, congrats.

  32. You just had an unnecessary dream.

  33. And if you spent less time sleeping and got up in the morning to read your Bible,

  34. you could have figured that out a long time ago.

  35. But that's just my opinion.

  36. But all joking aside, whether you are a cessationist or a continuationist,

  37. you should always go to Scripture as the sole authority,

  38. regardless of what some dreamer says.

  39. Authority is never innate to any individual,

  40. but is exclusively the claim of God and His Word.

  41. And that serves any Christian's authority.

  42. That is the guidestone.

  43. That is the plumb line.

  44. That and that alone.

  45. And to illustrate this understanding of God being the sole authority,

  46. Jude gives us another interesting reference in verse 9.

  47. This reference does not come from the Old Testament or the New Testament.

  48. Rather, it comes from a document known as the Testament of Moses

  49. or the Assumption of Moses.

  50. Although they may have been the same document,

  51. scholars aren't sure, and for a load of reasons,

  52. we won't get into this today.

  53. But essentially, this is a story

  54. in which the devil comes to claim the body of Moses

  55. on account of the fact that Moses murdered an Egyptian,

  56. which we know Moses actually did murder.

  57. We know that from the book of Exodus.

  58. But in this extra-biblical story,

  59. Moses is about to be honorably buried by the archangel Michael.

  60. But the devil comes along accusing him,

  61. saying, no, he doesn't deserve an honorable burial.

  62. He's a murderer.

  63. And so that's the background to this story.

  64. They're arguing over where he deserves to be buried.

  65. But here, the point Jude wants to make

  66. isn't about this debate necessarily,

  67. but we see in the second half of verse 9

  68. that the archangel Michael says,

  69. or he says of Michael,

  70. that he did not presume to pronounce

  71. a blasphemous judgment in response to the devil.

  72. But what did he say?

  73. He said, quote,

  74. the Lord rebuke you.

  75. So contrary to the rebellious angels from last week

  76. who left their proper dwelling in verse 6

  77. and made judgments for themselves,

  78. the archangel Michael knows his place

  79. and he knows it is under the authority of God.

  80. Michael knows that God is,

  81. as James 4.12 says,

  82. the one lawgiver and one judge of the universe.

  83. Who is Michael that he could condemn the devil or any sinner?

  84. That is God's role alone

  85. and God will execute his judgment in the end of days.

  86. So Michael says,

  87. the Lord rebuke you.

  88. It's the Lord who has this authority,

  89. who has this position,

  90. and he will do it.

  91. So we should be like Michael.

  92. We should know our place and stay there

  93. when it comes to the kingdom of God.

  94. We have no other authority

  95. and we have no power of our own.

  96. So the authority of these false teachers

  97. is inherently self-serving.

  98. It is an attempt to justify their lifestyles

  99. and to teach it to others,

  100. to have influential control over others.

  101. In short, their authority is one of their own making

  102. and it's not real.

  103. And in verse 10,

  104. we see their understanding

  105. and Jude is contrasting it with Michael.

  106. So this is the second part of our outline.

  107. Number two,

  108. the false teacher's understanding.

  109. He goes on to say in comparison to Michael,

  110. but these people,

  111. these people blaspheme all that they do not understand

  112. and they are destroyed by all that they,

  113. like unreasoning animals,

  114. understand instinctively.

  115. So Michael does not blaspheme the devil

  116. because he knows his place,

  117. but these people blaspheme.

  118. Blaspheme meaning to speak evil against

  119. or to accuse.

  120. And what do these false teachers blaspheme?

  121. Well, Jude says everything they do not understand.

  122. So we can guess with good authority

  123. that they don't understand God.

  124. They don't understand God's word.

  125. Romans 3, 10 through 11,

  126. Paul says,

  127. no one is righteous,

  128. no not one,

  129. no one understands,

  130. no one seeks for God.

  131. He puts it more pointedly in 1 Corinthians 2, 14.

  132. He says,

  133. but a natural man does not accept

  134. the things of the spirit of God,

  135. for they are foolishness to him

  136. and he cannot understand them

  137. because they are spiritually appraised.

  138. And we see this kind of language

  139. all throughout the Bible.

  140. These teachers,

  141. these false teachers,

  142. they blaspheme everything

  143. that is good,

  144. honorable,

  145. and praiseworthy,

  146. chiefly God himself.

  147. But Jude goes on to say

  148. what they do understand,

  149. what they do understand,

  150. and he says it will destroy them.

  151. What is it that they understand?

  152. Everything that unreasoning animals

  153. would understand instinctively.

  154. Recognize that Jude is employing

  155. typical Greco-Roman trash talk.

  156. He is mocking them.

  157. Every animal does three things essentially,

  158. sleeps, eats, and reproduces.

  159. They do not think,

  160. nor do they weigh issues.

  161. They just do,

  162. and do for themselves.

  163. What a fitting comparison

  164. to the false teacher.

  165. All they know is what their flesh desires,

  166. and they chase it.

  167. They are,

  168. as Paul says in Romans 6,

  169. slaves to sin.

  170. And I want to make a quick aside here

  171. that I think is pertinent

  172. to Jude's comments here.

  173. I think it's okay,

  174. or even biblical,

  175. to mock false teachers

  176. if done rightly.

  177. Okay, last week we talked about

  178. how we ought not to be like the Pharisee

  179. who mocks the tax collector

  180. praying aloud,

  181. God, I thank you

  182. that I'm not like this tax collector

  183. in Luke 18.11.

  184. The Pharisee in that story

  185. is in the wrong on multiple fronts.

  186. He is depending on his own

  187. self-righteousness for salvation.

  188. That's problem number one.

  189. Problem number two,

  190. he's denying the grace of God

  191. and the life of that tax collector

  192. who is literally in the midst

  193. in verse 13

  194. of praying for mercy.

  195. And most importantly

  196. for what we're discussing,

  197. or I don't want to qualify that,

  198. for what we're discussing,

  199. this Pharisee did not mock

  200. the tax collector

  201. out of a pleading

  202. for this tax collector to repent.

  203. I want to repeat that.

  204. This Pharisee didn't mock

  205. the tax collector

  206. out of a pleading

  207. for this tax collector

  208. to repent.

  209. His motive and his mindset

  210. were wrong.

  211. So in other words,

  212. when and if we mock

  213. false teachers,

  214. it should be motivated

  215. by a desire

  216. to have them see

  217. the crazy and utter foolishness

  218. of their way.

  219. This mocking should be

  220. a zealous pleading

  221. for them to repent

  222. and believe.

  223. Not a put-down,

  224. but a pleading,

  225. like listen to reason.

  226. And it can also come

  227. from a motive

  228. to protect the flock,

  229. right?

  230. You might say to yourself,

  231. I'm going to mock

  232. this absurd teaching

  233. and this teacher

  234. so as to sober up

  235. the sheep

  236. whom God has entrusted

  237. to me

  238. to keep them

  239. from the error

  240. of that way.

  241. And frankly,

  242. you see this type of mocking

  243. all throughout

  244. the Bible.

  245. Jude does it here,

  246. calling his false teachers

  247. unreasoning animals

  248. to make a point

  249. that sticks.

  250. Likewise,

  251. Paul,

  252. in his letter

  253. to the Galatians,

  254. he addresses heretics

  255. who taught

  256. that we are saved

  257. by Christ

  258. and circumcision,

  259. right?

  260. Works.

  261. And he mocks them

  262. over and over again

  263. in his letter

  264. and he says,

  265. rather wittingly,

  266. he says in Galatians 5.12,

  267. I wish they would go

  268. the whole way

  269. and emasculate themselves.

  270. That's a clever way

  271. of saying circumcision

  272. is worthless

  273. for salvation

  274. and I hope that

  275. in your teaching

  276. you never reproduce

  277. disciples

  278. who follow your heresy.

  279. And if this idea

  280. of mocking

  281. is new to you

  282. or concerning,

  283. I would encourage you

  284. to spend time

  285. in the prophets

  286. who do this a lot.

  287. I would especially

  288. point you to

  289. Matthew 23

  290. where Jesus gives

  291. his seven woes

  292. discourse to the Pharisees

  293. and in there

  294. Jesus says some

  295. really hard things

  296. in witty

  297. and mocking ways.

  298. But when you read

  299. the whole discourse

  300. it ends with Jesus

  301. saying these words.

  302. He says in Matthew 23

  303. 37,

  304. O Jerusalem,

  305. Jerusalem,

  306. the city that

  307. kills the prophets

  308. and stones

  309. those who sent it.

  310. How often would I

  311. have gathered

  312. your children together

  313. as a hen

  314. gathers her brood

  315. under her wings

  316. and you were not willing.

  317. So Jesus desired

  318. to save Israel,

  319. to gather them all

  320. under his wings

  321. and protect them

  322. but they were not

  323. willing.

  324. So even in the mockery,

  325. even in calling out

  326. foolishness

  327. what it is,

  328. foolishness,

  329. Jesus is working

  330. to protect the flock,

  331. the elect,

  332. to secure them

  333. in the way

  334. that they should go

  335. and to call sinners

  336. to repentance

  337. in faith.

  338. So feel the freedom

  339. to employ

  340. this kind of rhetoric

  341. but do so

  342. carefully.

  343. If you are unsure

  344. where the lines

  345. are with this

  346. then you're better off

  347. avoiding it altogether.

  348. It takes a great deal

  349. of sobriety,

  350. wisdom,

  351. and love

  352. to use this rhetoric

  353. in a way

  354. that is God honoring.

  355. But Jude goes on

  356. in verse 11.

  357. He wants to show us

  358. three more

  359. Old Testament types

  360. that characterize

  361. false teachers.

  362. So this is part three

  363. of our outline.

  364. Three Old Testament types

  365. that characterize

  366. false teachers.

  367. He says,

  368. Woe to them

  369. for they walked

  370. in the way of Cain

  371. and abandoned themselves

  372. for the sake of gain

  373. to Balaam's error

  374. and perished

  375. in Korah's rebellion.

  376. So Jude expresses

  377. divine judgment

  378. on these false teachers.

  379. He says,

  380. Woe to them.

  381. A phrase which literally

  382. carries the idea

  383. of damn them

  384. to hell

  385. but it also carries

  386. a connotation

  387. of grief

  388. or sorrow

  389. for the guilty.

  390. Jude is saying

  391. they will go to hell

  392. and I tremble

  393. for them.

  394. He's concerned

  395. for them.

  396. And then he charges

  397. them with having

  398. quote,

  399. walked in the way

  400. of Cain

  401. and let me remind you

  402. from last week

  403. you need to know

  404. your Old Testaments

  405. well.

  406. In Genesis 4,

  407. Adam and Eve

  408. have two sons

  409. after the fall,

  410. Cain and Abel.

  411. After they both

  412. make offerings

  413. to God,

  414. God lets it be known

  415. that he accepts

  416. Abel's offering

  417. and rejects

  418. Cain's offering.

  419. Genesis never

  420. explains why

  421. but the main

  422. thrust of the story

  423. is about Cain's

  424. response

  425. to the situation.

  426. After being angry

  427. and being confronted

  428. by God,

  429. Cain murders

  430. Abel

  431. in a rage

  432. of some kind.

  433. Now think about that.

  434. Two brothers

  435. who are supposedly

  436. worshipping God

  437. together,

  438. making sacrifices

  439. and all of a sudden

  440. Cain is murdering

  441. Abel.

  442. And so this is

  443. a story about

  444. persecution

  445. within the faith

  446. from professing

  447. believers.

  448. And in Jewish

  449. literature

  450. that writes

  451. about Cain

  452. which we know

  453. Jude is very

  454. familiar with,

  455. Cain becomes

  456. an archetype,

  457. a character

  458. of sin.

  459. He's the great

  460. teacher,

  461. the great sinner

  462. in Jewish

  463. thought.

  464. No one is worse

  465. than Cain

  466. to the Jew.

  467. And so Jude's

  468. accusation

  469. is that these

  470. false teachers

  471. are hurting

  472. the true believers

  473. with their

  474. disobedience

  475. and teaching.

  476. His accusation

  477. is that

  478. they are not only

  479. guilty of this

  480. once but are

  481. walking

  482. in this way.

  483. A well-known

  484. expression in the

  485. Bible.

  486. It carries the

  487. idea of one

  488. who is constantly

  489. doing something

  490. and seeking to

  491. practice it

  492. or improve it.

  493. They want to get

  494. better at it.

  495. So like Cain

  496. they are harmful

  497. to the true church

  498. and they share

  499. the motivation

  500. of Balaam.

  501. They are who

  502. they are

  503. and do what

  504. they do

  505. verse 11

  506. for the sake

  507. of gain.

  508. So in Numbers

    Numbers 22 chapter mention

  509. chapter 22

  510. through 24

  511. we read about

  512. the pagan

  513. king Balak

  514. who wanted

  515. his pagan

  516. prophet Balaam

  517. to curse

  518. Israel.

  519. So Balaam

  520. promised Balaam

  521. by saying

  522. quote

  523. I will reward

  524. you richly

  525. in Numbers

  526. 24

  527. 11.

  528. So Jude's

  529. accusation

  530. of the false

  531. teachers

  532. in the church

  533. is that they

  534. are seeking

  535. financial gain.

  536. They are taking

  537. advantage

  538. of the church

  539. and so

  540. they will

  541. perish

  542. like Korah

  543. and those

  544. who followed

  545. him

  546. in his

  547. rebellion.

  548. Now again

  549. in Jewish

  550. thought

  551. Korah

  552. was the

  553. classic

  554. example

  555. of

  556. antinomian

  557. heresy

  558. the idea

  559. that God's

  560. law

  561. has no

  562. bearing

  563. on us

  564. and we

  565. can do

  566. what we

  567. want

  568. live

  569. how we

  570. want.

  571. In Numbers

  572. 16

  573. is where

  574. we read

  575. about

  576. Korah's

  577. rebellion.

  578. Korah

  579. was known

  580. for contending

  581. with Moses

  582. and Aaron.

  583. We know

  584. that from

  585. the narrative

  586. we know

  587. that from

  588. a description

  589. given

  590. in Numbers

  591. 26

  592. 9.

  593. He embodies

  594. a disgruntled

  595. person.

  596. It says

  597. in Numbers

  598. 16

  599. 11

  600. that he

  601. was a

  602. grumbler.

  603. And upon

  604. leading

  605. 250 other

  606. men

  607. and their

  608. families

  609. against

  610. Moses

  611. and Aaron

  612. God

  613. opens up

  614. the ground

  615. to send

  616. them all

  617. to Sheol

  618. as a

  619. punishment

  620. for their

  621. rebellion

  622. divine

  623. judgment

  624. on the

  625. apostate

  626. once

  627. again.

  628. So you

  629. might have

  630. noticed

  631. these three

  632. names are

  633. out of

  634. chronological

  635. order.

  636. Chronologically

  637. it should

  638. have been

  639. Cain,

  640. Korah,

  641. and Balaam.

  642. But I

  643. think Jude

  644. rearranges

  645. the order

  646. to highlight

  647. judgment

  648. again as

  649. an ending

  650. for all

  651. such

  652. people.

  653. These

  654. people are

  655. characterized

  656. by anger,

  657. murder,

  658. greed,

  659. grumbling

  660. in a spirit

  661. of rebellion.

  662. and that

  663. is who

  664. they are

  665. and they

  666. walk in

  667. that way.

  668. They

  669. practice

  670. such

  671. things.

  672. And so

  673. they pose

  674. a great

  675. threat to

  676. the true

  677. church.

  678. This leads

  679. us to the

  680. next part

  681. of our

  682. outline,

  683. part four,

  684. the threat

  685. of false

  686. teachers.

  687. Jude goes

  688. on and he

  689. says,

  690. these are

  691. hidden

  692. reefs

  693. at your

  694. love feasts

  695. as they

  696. feast with

  697. you without

  698. fear.

  699. So perhaps

  700. you've noticed

  701. by now in

  702. Jude's

  703. epistle,

  704. that he

  705. constantly

  706. refers to

  707. false

  708. teachers

  709. as

  710. these.

  711. He's

  712. creating

  713. distance

  714. between

  715. their

  716. way

  717. of

  718. life

  719. as

  720. opposed

  721. to

  722. the

  723. way

  724. of

  725. life

  726. for

  727. the

  728. true

  729. believer.

  730. And here

  731. we see

  732. that their

  733. way of

  734. life

  735. poses a

  736. great

  737. danger

  738. to

  739. the

  740. church.

  741. So the

  742. love feast

  743. that he

  744. speaks of

  745. is the

  746. Lord's

  747. supper.

  748. That's

  749. what early

  750. Christians

  751. called it,

  752. the taking

  753. of the

  754. cup

  755. and the

  756. bread.

  757. Now

  758. theologically

  759. this is

  760. significant

  761. because

  762. this

  763. ordinance

  764. of the

  765. church

  766. calls

  767. to

  768. mind

  769. Christ's

  770. sacrificial

  771. death

  772. to

  773. pardon

  774. the

  775. sins

  776. of

  777. the

  778. elect.

  779. The

  780. cup

  781. is

  782. the

  783. wrath

  784. of

  785. God,

  786. the

  787. wine

  788. or

  789. the

  790. juice

  791. is

  792. the

  793. blood

  794. of

  795. Christ

  796. and

  797. the

  798. bread

  799. is

  800. Christ's

  801. body.

  802. So these

  803. false

  804. teachers

  805. are partaking

  806. of the

  807. Lord's

  808. supper

  809. which is

  810. blasphemy

  811. because

  812. they are

  813. by

  814. definition

  815. not

  816. in

  817. Christ.

  818. By

  819. partaking

  820. in the

  821. cup

  822. and the

  823. bread

  824. are

  825. signaling

  826. to the

  827. world

  828. and to

  829. the

  830. church

  831. that they

  832. believe

  833. their sins

  834. are forgiven

  835. in Christ

  836. but that is

  837. only true

  838. for those

  839. who have

  840. repented

  841. and

  842. believes

  843. which these

  844. false

  845. teachers

  846. have not

  847. done

  848. and so

  849. they lie

  850. when they

  851. partake

  852. in the

  853. Lord's

  854. supper.

  855. And

  856. significantly

  857. too

  858. in the

  859. Greco-Roman

  860. world

  861. banqueting

  862. with people

  863. was a

  864. social

  865. institution

  866. and it

  867. was one

  868. that

  869. signaled

  870. to the

  871. world

  872. at large

  873. that you

  874. identify

  875. with these

  876. people.

  877. A way

  878. of saying

  879. we

  880. are

  881. one.

  882. In

  883. other

  884. words

  885. when these

  886. false

  887. teachers

  888. banquet

  889. with the

  890. church

  891. they are

  892. falsely

  893. signaling

  894. that they

  895. are one

  896. in the

  897. same

  898. when nothing

  899. could be

  900. further

  901. from the

  902. truth.

  903. And this

  904. is why

  905. Jude in

  906. verse 12

  907. calls them

  908. hidden

  909. reefs.

  910. The

  911. metaphor

  912. is that

  913. the

  914. church

  915. is the

  916. ship

  917. in the

  918. sea

  919. and if

  920. that

  921. ship

  922. comes

  923. into

  924. contact

  925. with

  926. a

  927. hidden

  928. reef

  929. then it

  930. will be

  931. stuck

  932. or worse

  933. it

  934. will

  935. sink

  936. there

  937. will

  938. be

  939. a

  940. hole

  941. punctured

  942. and

  943. people

  944. will

  945. die.

  946. So

  947. Jude's

  948. point

  949. is that

  950. they

  951. will

  952. destroy

  953. the

  954. church

  955. not

  956. eternally

  957. but

  958. in

  959. this

  960. life

  961. if

  962. they

  963. are

  964. allowed

  965. to

  966. continue

  967. participating

  968. in

  969. the

  970. Lord's

  971. Supper

  972. and the

  973. activities

  974. of the

  975. church.

  976. They

  977. will

  978. distort

  979. the

  980. witness

  981. of

  982. the

  983. church

  984. the

  985. purity

  986. of

  987. the

  988. church

  989. and

  990. the

  991. identity

  992. of

  993. the

  994. church.

  995. So

  996. what

  997. do

  998. they

  999. do

  1000. then?

  1001. What

  1002. do

  1003. they

  1004. produce?

  1005. And

  1006. the

  1007. short

  1008. answer

  1009. is

  1010. nothing

  1011. short

  1012. of

  1013. wickedness

  1014. and

  1015. worthlessness.

  1016. So

  1017. this

  1018. leads us

  1019. to

  1020. number

  1021. five

  1022. the

  1023. produce

  1024. of

  1025. false

  1026. teachers.

  1027. Looking at

  1028. the second

  1029. half

  1030. of

  1031. verse

  1032. 12

  1033. Jude

  1034. tells us

  1035. the

  1036. produce

  1037. of

  1038. false

  1039. teachers.

  1040. He says

  1041. that

  1042. these

  1043. false

  1044. teachers

  1045. are

  1046. shepherds

  1047. feeding

  1048. themselves.

  1049. Waterless

  1050. clouds

  1051. swept

  1052. along

  1053. by

  1054. winds.

  1055. Fruitless

  1056. trees

  1057. in late

  1058. autumn

  1059. twice

  1060. dead

  1061. uprooted

  1062. wild

  1063. waves

  1064. of

  1065. the

  1066. sea

  1067. casting

  1068. up

  1069. the

  1070. foam

  1071. of

  1072. their

  1073. own

  1074. shame

  1075. wandering

  1076. stars

  1077. for whom

  1078. the gloom

  1079. of utter

  1080. darkness

  1081. has been

  1082. reserved

  1083. forever.

  1084. So they

  1085. take care

  1086. of no

  1087. one

  1088. but

  1089. themselves.

  1090. They

  1091. feed

  1092. themselves.

  1093. They

  1094. cannot

  1095. give

  1096. water

  1097. to

  1098. anything

  1099. to

  1100. make

  1101. it

  1102. grow.

  1103. They

  1104. are

  1105. waterless

  1106. clouds.

  1107. They

  1108. themselves

  1109. are on

  1110. unstable

  1111. ground

  1112. being

  1113. swept

  1114. away

  1115. by

  1116. wind,

  1117. a

  1118. common

  1119. imagery

  1120. expressing

  1121. their

  1122. instability

  1123. and

  1124. lack

  1125. of

  1126. security.

  1127. They

  1128. are

  1129. good

  1130. for

  1131. nothing

  1132. just

  1133. as a

  1134. tree

  1135. that

  1136. bears

  1137. no

  1138. fruit

  1139. is

  1140. good

  1141. for

  1142. nothing.

  1143. That

  1144. sounds

  1145. like

  1146. Jesus

  1147. in the

  1148. Sermon

  1149. on

  1150. the

  1151. Mount.

  1152. And

  1153. these

  1154. trees

  1155. are

  1156. twice

  1157. dead

  1158. because

  1159. they

  1160. died

  1161. in

  1162. sin

  1163. like

  1164. all

  1165. of

  1166. us

  1167. but

  1168. also

  1169. because

  1170. upon

  1171. hearing

  1172. the

  1173. gospel

  1174. they

  1175. rejected

  1176. it

  1177. for

  1178. a

  1179. gospel

  1180. of

  1181. their

  1182. own

  1183. making.

  1184. Jesus

  1185. might

  1186. have

  1187. said

  1188. it

  1189. this

  1190. way

  1191. as

  1192. he

  1193. did

  1194. to

  1195. the

  1196. Pharisees

  1197. in

  1198. Matthew

  1199. 23

  1200. he

  1201. might

  1202. have

  1203. said

  1204. twice

  1205. a

  1206. child

  1207. of

  1208. hell.

  1209. And

  1210. in

  1211. their

  1212. lawlessness

  1213. the

  1214. only

  1215. thing

  1216. that

  1217. shows

  1218. up

  1219. is

  1220. their

  1221. own

  1222. shame

  1223. because

  1224. they

  1225. are

  1226. shameless

  1227. in

  1228. pursuing

  1229. their

  1230. ungodly

  1231. lifestyle.

  1232. It

  1233. foams

  1234. up like

  1235. the

  1236. ocean.

  1237. You

  1238. will

  1239. notice

  1240. it.

  1241. And

  1242. they

  1243. are

  1244. wandering

  1245. stars.

  1246. Again

  1247. a common

  1248. expression

  1249. that

  1250. indicates

  1251. they

  1252. deviate

  1253. greatly

  1254. from

  1255. the

  1256. truth.

  1257. And

  1258. for

  1259. all

  1260. this

  1261. because

  1262. they

  1263. seek

  1264. sin

  1265. in

  1266. their

  1267. own

  1268. flesh

  1269. and

  1270. justify

  1271. it

  1272. they

  1273. will

  1274. perish

  1275. for

  1276. eternity

  1277. in

  1278. the

  1279. gloom

  1280. of

  1281. utter

  1282. darkness

  1283. better

  1284. known

  1285. as

  1286. hell.

  1287. So

  1288. they

  1289. are

  1290. good

  1291. for

  1292. nothing

  1293. when

  1294. it

  1295. comes

  1296. to

  1297. the

  1298. church.

  1299. They

  1300. can

  1301. and

  1302. only

  1303. will

  1304. harm

  1305. the

  1306. church.

  1307. And

  1308. I

  1309. have

  1310. to

  1311. tell

  1312. you

  1313. I

  1314. get

  1315. so

  1316. tired

  1317. when

  1318. I

  1319. hear

  1320. Christians

  1321. say

  1322. oh

  1323. I

  1324. know

  1325. this

  1326. preacher

  1327. or

  1328. this

  1329. song

  1330. is

  1331. heretical

  1332. but

  1333. I

  1334. just

  1335. love

  1336. the

  1337. way

  1338. it

  1339. makes

  1340. me

  1341. feel

  1342. or

  1343. I

  1344. have

  1345. my

  1346. own

  1347. understanding

  1348. of

  1349. what

  1350. they

  1351. mean

  1352. and

  1353. it

  1354. makes

  1355. me

  1356. love

  1357. God

  1358. more.

  1359. The

  1360. Bible

  1361. just

  1362. speaks

  1363. so

  1364. differently

  1365. from

  1366. this.

  1367. Jude

  1368. would

  1369. rebuke

  1370. that

  1371. person

  1372. and tell

  1373. them

  1374. have

  1375. nothing

  1376. to

  1377. do

  1378. with

  1379. some

  1380. worthless

  1381. fruitless

  1382. dangerous

  1383. teaching

  1384. and

  1385. teacher.

  1386. That

  1387. heretical

  1388. song

  1389. or

  1390. preacher

  1391. does

  1392. make

  1393. them

  1394. love

  1395. God

  1396. more

  1397. but

  1398. not

  1399. the

  1400. God

  1401. of

  1402. the

  1403. Bible

  1404. rather

  1405. a

  1406. God

  1407. of

  1408. their

  1409. own

  1410. making.

  1411. These

  1412. are

  1413. idolaters

  1414. who

  1415. tolerate

  1416. such

  1417. teachings

  1418. and

  1419. teachers.

  1420. Now

  1421. in the

  1422. Sermon on

  1423. the

  1424. Mount

  1425. Jesus

  1426. says

  1427. what

  1428. happens

  1429. to

  1430. bad

  1431. trees

  1432. that

  1433. bear

  1434. bad

  1435. fruit.

  1436. He

  1437. says

  1438. in

  1439. Matthew

  1440. 7

  1441. 19

  1442. every

  1443. tree

  1444. that

  1445. does

  1446. not

  1447. bear

  1448. good

  1449. fruit

  1450. is

  1451. cut

  1452. down

  1453. and

  1454. thrown

  1455. into

  1456. the

  1457. fire.

  1458. So

  1459. Jude

  1460. following

  1461. his

  1462. master's

  1463. teachings

  1464. echoes

  1465. this.

  1466. This

  1467. leads

  1468. us

  1469. to

  1470. the

  1471. sixth

  1472. point

  1473. of

  1474. our

  1475. outline

  1476. !

  1477. The

  1478. judgment

  1479. on

  1480. false

  1481. teachers.

  1482. So

  1483. looking

  1484. at

  1485. verse

  1486. 14

  1487. Jude

  1488. writes

  1489. it

  1490. was

  1491. also

  1492. about

  1493. these

  1494. that

  1495. Enoch

  1496. the

  1497. seventh

  1498. from

  1499. Adam

  1500. prophesied

  1501. saying

  1502. behold

  1503. the

  1504. Lord

  1505. comes

  1506. with

  1507. ten

  1508. thousand

  1509. of

  1510. his

  1511. holy

  1512. ones

  1513. to

  1514. execute

  1515. judgment

  1516. on

  1517. all

  1518. and

  1519. to

  1520. convict

  1521. all

  1522. the

  1523. ungodly

  1524. of

  1525. all

  1526. their

  1527. deeds

  1528. of

  1529. ungodliness

  1530. that

  1531. they

  1532. have

  1533. committed

  1534. in

  1535. such

  1536. an

  1537. ungodly

  1538. way

  1539. and

  1540. of

  1541. all

  1542. the

  1543. harsh

  1544. things

  1545. that

  1546. ungodly

  1547. sinners

  1548. have

  1549. spoken

  1550. against

  1551. him.

  1552. So

  1553. here

  1554. Jude

  1555. explicitly

  1556. quotes

  1557. 1

  1558. Enoch

  1559. 1

  1560. 9

  1561. if

  1562. you

  1563. missed

  1564. the

  1565. sermon

  1566. last

  1567. week

  1568. go and

  1569. listen

  1570. to

  1571. a

  1572. recording

  1573. for an

  1574. explanation

  1575. of how

  1576. that is

  1577. so

  1578. but

  1579. just

  1580. to

  1581. reiterate

  1582. 1

  1583. Enoch

  1584. is not

  1585. canonical

  1586. scripture

  1587. but

  1588. notice

  1589. everything

  1590. in this

  1591. quotation

  1592. can be

  1593. traced

  1594. to

  1595. biblical

  1596. texts

  1597. we

  1598. know

  1599. that

  1600. Jesus

  1601. will

  1602. return

  1603. with

  1604. his

  1605. angels

  1606. to

  1607. judge

  1608. the

  1609. wicked

  1610. and

  1611. to

  1612. destroy

  1613. them

  1614. revelations

  1615. 19

  1616. 15

  1617. talking

  1618. about

  1619. Jesus

  1620. return

  1621. says

  1622. this

  1623. from

  1624. Jesus

  1625. mouth

  1626. comes

  1627. a

  1628. sharp

  1629. sword

  1630. with

  1631. which

  1632. to

  1633. strike

  1634. down

  1635. the

  1636. nations

  1637. and

  1638. he

  1639. will

  1640. rule

  1641. them

  1642. with

  1643. a

  1644. rod

  1645. of

  1646. iron

  1647. he

  1648. will

  1649. tread

  1650. the

  1651. wine

  1652. press

  1653. of

  1654. the

  1655. fury

  1656. of

  1657. the

  1658. wrath

  1659. of

  1660. God

  1661. the

  1662. almighty

  1663. so

  1664. that

  1665. phrase

  1666. about

  1667. the

  1668. wine

  1669. press

  1670. being

  1671. another

  1672. greco-roman

  1673. expression

  1674. that

  1675. pictures

  1676. Christ

  1677. crushing

  1678. the

  1679. skulls

  1680. of

  1681. his

  1682. enemies

  1683. and

  1684. so

  1685. I

  1686. think

  1687. Jude

  1688. is

  1689. quoting

  1690. first

  1691. Enoch

  1692. because

  1693. this

  1694. quote

  1695. captures

  1696. true

  1697. doctrine

  1698. in

  1699. the

  1700. Bible

  1701. but

  1702. also

  1703. because

  1704. this

  1705. quote

  1706. emphasizes

  1707. the

  1708. ungodliness

  1709. of

  1710. false

  1711. teachers

  1712. that

  1713. term

  1714. is

  1715. used

  1716. four

  1717. times

  1718. in

  1719. this

  1720. quote

  1721. ungodly

  1722. ungodly

  1723. ungodly

  1724. ungodly

  1725. just

  1726. lost

  1727. everything

  1728. here we

  1729. go

  1730. sorry

  1731. so

  1732. ungodly

  1733. ungodly

  1734. ungodly

  1735. and ungodly

  1736. and

  1737. Christ

  1738. is not

  1739. coming

  1740. to

  1741. convict

  1742. them

  1743. in the

  1744. sense

  1745. of

  1746. making

  1747. them

  1748. sorrowful

  1749. over

  1750. their

  1751. sin

  1752. or

  1753. to

  1754. lead

  1755. them

  1756. to

  1757. repentance

  1758. no

  1759. when

  1760. Christ

  1761. returns

  1762. the

  1763. time

  1764. is

  1765. up

  1766. the

  1767. word

  1768. convict

  1769. in this

  1770. context

  1771. is

  1772. referring

  1773. to

  1774. finding

  1775. them

  1776. guilty

  1777. in a

  1778. court

  1779. of

  1780. law

  1781. so

  1782. this

  1783. whole

  1784. quote

  1785. is

  1786. judgment

  1787. language

  1788. Jude

  1789. is

  1790. not

  1791. afraid

  1792. to

  1793. repeat

  1794. this

  1795. over

  1796. and

  1797. over

  1798. and

  1799. over

  1800. again

  1801. throughout

  1802. his

  1803. letter

  1804. these

  1805. apostate

  1806. heretics

  1807. will

  1808. go to

  1809. hell

  1810. for

  1811. all

  1812. eternity

  1813. apart

  1814. from

  1815. repentance

  1816. and

  1817. faith

  1818. in

  1819. Christ

  1820. and

  1821. that

  1822. is

  1823. a

  1824. sober

  1825. truth

  1826. a

  1827. sober

  1828. reality

  1829. that

  1830. we

  1831. need

  1832. to

  1833. be

  1834. thinking

  1835. about

  1836. and

  1837. finally

  1838. part

  1839. seven

  1840. of our

  1841. outline

  1842. the

  1843. speech

  1844. of

  1845. false

  1846. teachers

  1847. verse

  1848. sixteen

  1849. he

  1850. says

  1851. these

  1852. are

  1853. grumblers

  1854. malcontents

  1855. following

  1856. their own

  1857. sinful

  1858. desires

  1859. they

  1860. are

  1861. loud

  1862. mouth

  1863. boasters

  1864. showing

  1865. favoritism

  1866. to

  1867. gain

  1868. advantage

  1869. so

  1870. these

  1871. are

  1872. grumblers

  1873. doesn't

  1874. that

  1875. sound

  1876. like

  1877. Balaam

  1878. or

  1879. Korah

  1880. or

  1881. the

  1882. rest

  1883. of

  1884. the

  1885. exodus

  1886. generation

  1887. that

  1888. perished

  1889. in

  1890. the

  1891. wilderness

  1892. always

  1893. griping

  1894. always

  1895. having

  1896. a

  1897. bone

  1898. to

  1899. pick

  1900. busy

  1901. bodies

  1902. quarreling

  1903. types

  1904. and

  1905. I pray

  1906. we

  1907. never

  1908. behave

  1909. in

  1910. such

  1911. a

  1912. way

  1913. they

  1914. grumble

  1915. because

  1916. they

  1917. are

  1918. male

  1919. content

  1920. nothing

  1921. will

  1922. ever

  1923. please

  1924. them

  1925. in

  1926. all

  1927. this

  1928. they

  1929. are

  1930. merely

  1931. pursuing

  1932. the

  1933. desires

  1934. of

  1935. the

  1936. flesh

  1937. again

  1938. they

  1939. are

  1940. slaves

  1941. to

  1942. sin

  1943. as

  1944. Paul

  1945. says

  1946. in

  1947. Romans

  1948. 6

  1949. and

  1950. you

  1951. can

  1952. always

  1953. hear

  1954. a

  1955. false

  1956. teacher

  1957. because

  1958. they

  1959. are

  1960. loud

  1961. mouth

  1962. boasters

  1963. because

  1964. they

  1965. are

  1966. so

  1967. bent

  1968. on

  1969. making

  1970. a

  1971. god

  1972. of

  1973. their

  1974. own

  1975. making

  1976. what

  1977. always

  1978. happens

  1979. inevitably

  1980. is

  1981. that

  1982. their

  1983. god

  1984. ends

  1985. up

  1986. being

  1987. made

  1988. in

  1989. their

  1990. image

  1991. their

  1992. god

  1993. looks

  1994. !

  1995. like

  1996. them

  1997. and

  1998. they

  1999. cannot

  2000. help

  2001. but

  2002. boast

  2003. loudly

  2004. about

  2005. themselves

  2006. because

  2007. ultimately

  2008. in

  2009. their

  2010. mind

  2011. and

  2012. their

  2013. theology

  2014. and

  2015. their

  2016. gospel

  2017. they

  2018. are

  2019. god

  2020. and

  2021. that

  2022. is

  2023. so

  2024. contrary

  2025. to the

  2026. true

  2027. believer

  2028. who

  2029. as

  2030. Paul

  2031. says

  2032. boasts

  2033. only

  2034. in

  2035. the

  2036. Lord

  2037. 1

  2038. Corinthians

  2039. 1

  2040. 31

  2041. and

  2042. we

  2043. see

  2044. the

  2045. motive

  2046. behind

  2047. their

  2048. speech

  2049. is

  2050. to

  2051. gain

  2052. advantage

  2053. so

  2054. hear

  2055. this

  2056. be

  2057. aware

  2058. of

  2059. this

  2060. they

  2061. will

  2062. flatter

  2063. you

  2064. they

  2065. might

  2066. tell

  2067. you

  2068. how

  2069. wonderful

  2070. you

  2071. are

  2072. they

  2073. may

  2074. say

  2075. things

  2076. like

  2077. the

  2078. cross

  2079. reveals

  2080. your

  2081. worth

  2082. because

  2083. they

  2084. know

  2085. that's

  2086. a

  2087. message

  2088. that

  2089. appeals

  2090. that

  2091. itches

  2092. the

  2093. ear

  2094. and

  2095. no

  2096. question

  2097. they

  2098. will

  2099. show

  2100. you

  2101. favoritism

  2102. they

  2103. will

  2104. be

  2105. really

  2106. nice

  2107. but

  2108. it

  2109. isn't

  2110. for

  2111. you

  2112. and

  2113. it

  2114. certainly

  2115. isn't

  2116. for

  2117. God

  2118. it

  2119. is

  2120. for

  2121. their

  2122. advantage

  2123. so

  2124. in

  2125. closing

  2126. and

  2127. I

  2128. know

  2129. I'm

  2130. going

  2131. long

  2132. today

  2133. so

  2134. I'm

  2135. going

  2136. make

  2137. this

  2138. quick

  2139. but

  2140. in

  2141. closing

  2142. I

  2143. just

  2144. want

  2145. to

  2146. offer

  2147. one

  2148. application

  2149. next

  2150. week

  2151. we're

  2152. going

  2153. to

  2154. think

  2155. about

  2156. this

  2157. text

  2158. more

  2159. in

  2160. relation

  2161. to

  2162. next

  2163. week's

  2164. text

  2165. but

  2166. I

  2167. think

  2168. this

  2169. is

  2170. fitting

  2171. for

  2172. today

  2173. so

  2174. just

  2175. one

  2176. application

  2177. know

  2178. and

  2179. name

  2180. false

  2181. teachers

  2182. for

  2183. what

  2184. they

  2185. are

  2186. now

  2187. when

  2188. I

  2189. say

  2190. that

  2191. I

  2192. do

  2193. not

  2194. mean

  2195. spend

  2196. the rest

  2197. of your

  2198. life

  2199. studying

  2200. cults

  2201. and

  2202. following

  2203. a bunch

  2204. of

  2205. heretics

  2206. on

  2207. Twitter

  2208. or

  2209. some

  2210. other

  2211. thing

  2212. like

  2213. that

  2214. to

  2215. maybe

  2216. help

  2217. illustrate

  2218. what

  2219. I

  2220. am

  2221. trying

  2222. to

  2223. say

  2224. I

  2225. to

  2226. judge

  2227. how

  2228. could

  2229. I

  2230. know

  2231. his

  2232. heart

  2233. and

  2234. they

  2235. will

  2236. speculate

  2237. and

  2238. they'll

  2239. say

  2240. something

  2241. like

  2242. for

  2243. all

  2244. we

  2245. know

  2246. Joel

  2247. Osteen

  2248. is

  2249. a

  2250. believer

  2251. and

  2252. just

  2253. confused

  2254. or

  2255. caught

  2256. up

  2257. in

  2258. the

  2259. money

  2260. and

  2261. at

  2262. first

  2263. you

  2264. might

  2265. think

  2266. well

  2267. that

  2268. sounds

  2269. humble

  2270. or

  2271. wise

  2272. or

  2273. kind

  2274. since

  2275. that

  2276. person

  2277. is

  2278. assuming

  2279. the

  2280. best

  2281. but

  2282. I

  2283. am

  2284. telling

  2285. you

  2286. it

  2287. is

  2288. ignorant

  2289. it

  2290. is

  2291. unloving

  2292. and

  2293. it

  2294. is

  2295. sinful

  2296. throughout

  2297. the

  2298. bible

  2299. false

  2300. teachers

  2301. are

  2302. named

  2303. take

  2304. your

  2305. pick

  2306. the

  2307. pharisees

  2308. the

  2309. sadducees

  2310. corah

  2311. king

  2312. saul

  2313. hymen

  2314. a

  2315. and

  2316. a

  2317. and

  2318. a

  2319. and

  2320. first

  2321. timothy

  2322. and

  2323. so

  2324. many

  2325. others

  2326. we

  2327. do

  2328. a

  2329. disservice

  2330. to

  2331. our

  2332. true

  2333. brothers

  2334. and

  2335. sisters

  2336. in

  2337. the

  2338. faith

  2339. when

  2340. we

  2341. acknowledge

  2342. in a

  2343. positive

  2344. way

  2345. these

  2346. types

  2347. of

  2348. teachers

  2349. these

  2350. wolves

  2351. in

  2352. sheep's

  2353. clothing

  2354. who

  2355. desire

  2356. to

  2357. tear

  2358. us

  2359. apart

  2360. and

  2361. maybe

  2362. even

  2363. more

  2364. importantly

  2365. we

  2366. do

  2367. a

  2368. disservice

  2369. to

  2370. the

  2371. false

  2372. teacher

  2373. by

  2374. leaving

  2375. them

  2376. in

  2377. their

  2378. own

  2379. blindness

  2380. so

  2381. i

  2382. mentioned

  2383. joel

  2384. olstein

  2385. a

  2386. minute

  2387. ago

  2388. i

  2389. have

  2390. a

  2391. hundred

  2392. percent

  2393. certainty

  2394. that

  2395. he

  2396. is

  2397. a

  2398. false

  2399. teacher

  2400. because

  2401. jesus

  2402. tells

  2403. us

  2404. we

  2405. will

  2406. know

  2407. them

  2408. by

  2409. their

  2410. fruit

  2411. matthew

  2412. 7

  2413. 20

  2414. the

  2415. fruit

  2416. of

  2417. joel

  2418. olstein

  2419. only

  2420. feeds

  2421. him

  2422. he

  2423. exploits

  2424. the

  2425. gospel

  2426. to

  2427. dupe

  2428. the

  2429. ignorant

  2430. into

  2431. giving

  2432. him

  2433. all

  2434. kinds

  2435. of

  2436. money

  2437. he

  2438. is

  2439. a

  2440. predator

  2441. and

  2442. he

  2443. teaches

  2444. heresies

  2445. like

  2446. the

  2447. idea

  2448. that

  2449. jesus

  2450. is

  2451. not

  2452. the

  2453. only

  2454. way

  2455. to

  2456. heaven

  2457. that's

  2458. something

  2459. he

  2460. will

  2461. tell

  2462. you

  2463. and

  2464. jesus

  2465. would

  2466. be

  2467. shocked

  2468. to

  2469. learn

  2470. that

  2471. jesus

  2472. taught

  2473. quote

  2474. that

  2475. no

  2476. one

  2477. comes

  2478. to

  2479. the

  2480. father

  2481. except

  2482. through

  2483. me

  2484. in

  2485. john

  2486. 14

  2487. 6

  2488. and

  2489. i

  2490. could

  2491. go

  2492. on

  2493. with

  2494. a

  2495. list

  2496. of

  2497. heresies

  2498. that

  2499. that

  2500. man

  2501. alone

  2502. is

  2503. responsible

  2504. for

  2505. i

  2506. could

  2507. go

  2508. on

  2509. with

  2510. a

  2511. list

  2512. of

  2513. others

  2514. like

  2515. him

  2516. but

  2517. to

  2518. be

  2519. clear

  2520. i'm

  2521. not

  2522. being

  2523. a

  2524. jerk

  2525. for

  2526. saying

  2527. that

  2528. or

  2529. for

  2530. calling

  2531. that

  2532. out

  2533. what

  2534. i'm

  2535. doing

  2536. is

  2537. loving

  2538. because

  2539. it

  2540. is

  2541. a

  2542. pleading

  2543. for

  2544. him

  2545. as

  2546. well

  2547. as

  2548. anyone

  2549. like

  2550. him

  2551. to

  2552. repent

  2553. and

  2554. believe

  2555. in

  2556. the

  2557. true

  2558. gospel

  2559. so

  2560. i

  2561. don't

  2562. know

  2563. about

  2564. everybody

  2565. here

  2566. but

  2567. i

  2568. am

  2569. so

  2570. thankful

  2571. that

  2572. god

  2573. addresses

  2574. false

  2575. teaching

  2576. in

  2577. the

  2578. bible

  2579. over

  2580. and

  2581. over

  2582. again

  2583. such

  2584. grace

  2585. and

  2586. such

  2587. love

  2588. that

  2589. opportunity

  2590. upon

  2591. opportunity

  2592. to

  2593. repent

  2594. and

  2595. to

  2596. understand

  2597. are

  2598. given

  2599. and

  2600. furthermore

  2601. what a

  2602. testimony

  2603. to me

  2604. and all

  2605. of us

  2606. as we

  2607. read

  2608. scripture

  2609. to see

  2610. the

  2611. consistent

  2612. message

  2613. of the

  2614. cross

  2615. be

  2616. reiterated

  2617. against

  2618. every

  2619. false

  2620. idea

  2621. and

  2622. in

  2623. that

  2624. exchange

  2625. whenever

  2626. there's

  2627. this

  2628. confrontation

  2629. in the

  2630. bible

  2631. of what

  2632. the

  2633. gospel

  2634. is

  2635. and

  2636. isn't

  2637. it

  2638. brings

  2639. clarity

  2640. for us

  2641. to know

  2642. exactly

  2643. what

  2644. we

  2645. are

  2646. professing

  2647. frankly

  2648. i

  2649. personally

  2650. probably

  2651. would

  2652. have

  2653. fallen

  2654. into

  2655. the

  2656. works

  2657. based

  2658. mentality

  2659. of

  2660. the

  2661. pharisees

  2662. a

  2663. long

  2664. time

  2665. ago

  2666. if

  2667. it were

  2668. not

  2669. for

  2670. christ

  2671. himself

  2672. denouncing

  2673. their

  2674. teachings

  2675. as

  2676. blasphemy

  2677. in the

  2678. gospels

  2679. and he

  2680. does so

  2681. in the

  2682. clearest

  2683. and starkest

  2684. terms

  2685. it sobers

  2686. me up

  2687. it wakes

  2688. me up

  2689. so again

  2690. that christ

  2691. loves his

  2692. church

  2693. and desires

  2694. more to be

  2695. saved

  2696. that he

  2697. is willing

  2698. to have

  2699. hard

  2700. conversations

  2701. to name

  2702. names

  2703. to correct

  2704. and rebuke

  2705. and when

  2706. he

  2707. wills

  2708. it

  2709. to

  2710. reconcile

  2711. praise

  2712. the

  2713. lord

  2714. so to

  2715. that

  2716. let's

  2717. pray

  2718. that we

  2719. will be

  2720. discerning

  2721. and loving

  2722. enough

  2723. to know

  2724. and name

  2725. false

  2726. teachers

  2727. for the

  2728. sake

  2729. of the

  2730. world

  2731. the

  2732. church

  2733. and

  2734. chiefly

  2735. the

  2736. glory

  2737. of

  2738. god

  2739. let's

  2740. pray
