  1. Good morning, CFC. Thanks, Chris. Go ahead and take your copy of God's Word and open up to Jude, verse 24.

  2. ! Jude, verse 24. We're going to be wrapping up our study in Jude this morning. I am getting over some sickness. I'm not contagious, so nobody be alarmed.

  3. So I hope I'm able to remain standing by the end of this, that my voice will not give away.

  4. And I also just want to take a minute just to thank so many of you. I'm just very thankful to be in a church where I know that I'm loved and supported,

  5. and I've just had a lot of really great encouragement from so many of you as a young person who's growing as a preacher and trying to get this thing down.

  6. So I'm very thankful for the opportunities I've had, and I'm sorry that you had to deal with me awkwardly saying okay whenever you were encouraging,

  7. because I'm just weird about receiving any kind of compliments. I blame it on my siblings, because I never really got many,

  8. but that's why I'm just a little awkward about these things. But I really do appreciate it, and it really has been encouraging in so many ways.

  9. So our text today is Jude 24 through verse 25. As I said, it's the last bit of Jude.

  10. And this text is a doxology, and this one in particular is probably the most famous, or it's at least up there.

  11. What is a doxology? Doxology is a compound word. It comes from the Greek.

  12. The first word is doxa, which means glory, and the second word is logos, which means word or saying.

  13. And so a doxology is simply a glory saying.

  14. Or you might say it is a statement of praise, worship, and adoration.

  15. So simply put, it is a statement that conveys something glorious about God.

  16. Now I once heard a story about John Piper, a former pastor and seminary president in Minnesota.

  17. Piper was giving a speech to a bunch of incoming seminary students at his seminary.

  18. And basically, Piper gave this whole speech about the glory of God,

  19. and how God is infinite and eternal, and therefore his glory is infinite and eternal.

  20. And with this, he discussed how God as an academic subject, right, which we call theology,

  21. is the only academic subject that is inexhaustible.

  22. So this simply means you will never fully know everything about God,

  23. because God is infinite, eternal, and inexhaustible, whereas we are finite.

  24. So the math does not work for somebody like us, right, creatures.

  25. Finite creatures to fully know and understand the infinite God.

  26. And Piper then turned to his audience, and remember, his audience is a bunch of nerdy,

  27. geeky, know-it-all seminary students, right, who love theology, who love the Bible.

  28. And Piper said to that crowd of knowledgeable, studious types, he said,

  29. God will not be dissected.

  30. He will be worshipped.

  31. So God is not a field of study like biology or chemistry, which are exhaustible.

  32. Have we exhausted those fields?

  33. No.

  34. But anyone will tell you there is an end or a limit to those fields.

  35. Eventually, we can know everything there is to know about those studies,

  36. but not so with God.

  37. God is one in essence, three in person, without beginning and without end.

  38. He cannot be dissected.

  39. There is no limit.

  40. And Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2, verse 10,

    1 Corinthians 2:10

  41. he says,

  42. So this morning I have no points.

  43. I just want to walk through the text together so that we can understand what Jude is saying.

  44. And by doing this, my goal this morning is simple,

  45. that we would glorify God together in light of the doxology that Jude gives us

  46. through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

  47. So worshiping God is a demand that runs throughout Scripture.

  48. Psalm 150, verse 6 says pointedly,

    Psalms 150:6

  49. Let everyone who has breath praise the Lord.

  50. Praise the Lord.

  51. And worship is not only the demand, but it is also the reward.

  52. So remember the psalmist we read a few weeks ago, Psalm 27, verse 4.

    Psalms 27:4

  53. David says,

  54. One thing have I asked of the Lord, one thing that I seek after,

  55. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

  56. and notice this language,

  57. to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

  58. That is worship language.

  59. David wants to adore God by gazing upon him

  60. and learning about him with him, with God.

  61. So I invite you all now to read Jude 24 through 25 with me

  62. and to worship God with me.

  63. There is nothing greater, nothing higher, nothing more meaningful

  64. than what we are about to do,

  65. to reflect on the glory of God and worship him.

  66. So verse 24, Jude writes, to end his letter,

  67. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling

  68. and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,

  69. to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

  70. be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority

  71. before all time and now and forever.

  72. Amen.

  73. So Jude begins by saying now to him.

  74. And throughout the letter of Jude,

  75. he has switched his address numerous times.

  76. He starts off by addressing the believers

  77. who are called, kept, and beloved by God the Father

  78. in verse 1 for Jesus Christ.

  79. But because of the occasion, as we've studied,

  80. of these false teachers who have wormed their way in,

  81. Jude had to switch plans and address them.

  82. And so throughout the letter, we saw him say these, these, and these.

  83. But here, at the end of Jude's letter,

  84. he says now to him, to God.

  85. And this doxology at first glance might seem oddly placed.

  86. We just spent weeks unpacking text after text

  87. that speak of false teachers

  88. and their damning threat to the church.

  89. We've talked about the dire situation that the church is in.

  90. Yet here, at the end of Jude's letter,

  91. he concludes not with some word on how to fight these people,

  92. nor how to contend for the faith.

  93. That was last week.

  94. Nor does he offer any kind of further arguments to give,

  95. or anything like that,

  96. for the believers to defend themselves with.

  97. No personal greetings of any kind,

  98. as you might expect with Paul's letters.

  99. Rather, he ends by worshiping God.

  100. Jude addresses God to worship God.

  101. So think of all the times in your life

  102. when you put worship to the side.

  103. I have a lot of work this week.

  104. I better forget about prayer.

  105. Or I'm tired this week,

  106. so I better skip church.

  107. Or my spouse and I are getting into it again,

  108. so I can't afford to read my Bible this week.

  109. All these petty excuses,

  110. and many more like them,

  111. have dominated so much of our calendar

  112. far too many times.

  113. And you can imagine someone in Jude's church

  114. using a pretty good excuse.

  115. They might say,

  116. I'm going to have to put aside

  117. my relationship with God for now

  118. because of all these false teachers.

  119. This threat that is opposed to the people I love,

  120. my brothers and sisters of the faith.

  121. I don't have time for all that stuff.

  122. I've got to contend with these guys.

  123. And yet, that's not what we see.

  124. We have an amazing example from Jude.

  125. He begins this letter in verse 3

  126. by saying he can't write about the gospel

  127. because of the occasion of the false teachers.

  128. So notice this.

  129. This is an extremely important and dangerous occasion,

  130. so much so that Jude is unable to write

  131. about the gospel,

  132. our common salvation, as he puts it.

  133. Rather, he has to address the threat

  134. of the false teachers,

  135. these antinomian false teachers.

  136. So wouldn't you also conclude

  137. that Jude has no time to write a doxology

  138. if the situation is so lethal,

  139. so important,

  140. and so consequential?

  141. That's where my mind goes at first.

  142. And yet, here Jude writes a long, beautiful,

  143. glory-saturated doxology to God.

  144. So let Jude's example be a cue to us.

  145. No matter the life circumstance,

  146. we are to be a people characterized

  147. by worshiping God.

  148. If any one of us should ever be written about

  149. in the history books,

  150. live in such a way that your biography

  151. would scream,

  152. one who worshipped God.

  153. So now Jude goes on to describe God

  154. in the doxology,

  155. and refers to him as the one who is able.

  156. He is the one who is able.

  157. Just think for a moment

  158. about the power of this phrase,

  159. God is able.

  160. You cannot be confused about

  161. who this person is

  162. whom Jude is addressing,

  163. because there is no one else

  164. who is able.

  165. Able to do what?

  166. To save us and keep us from sin,

  167. which we'll see in the next two phrases.

  168. But do not miss the underlying point

  169. in this phrase.

  170. Jude singles out God

  171. as the only one who is able.

  172. There is no one like him.

  173. So God is the one

  174. who is able,

  175. verse 24,

  176. to keep you from stumbling.

  177. So last week we discussed

  178. the reality of divine sovereignty

  179. and human responsibility.

  180. So yes,

  181. we are called to keep ourselves

  182. in the love of God,

  183. as Jude says in verse 21.

  184. But as I said then,

  185. and as Jude reminds us now,

  186. ultimately it is God

  187. who keeps us from stumbling.

  188. The idea of stumbling

  189. is found throughout the Bible,

  190. especially in the Psalms,

  191. which I think influenced

  192. Jude's writing of this phrase.

  193. Psalm 56, verse 13,

    Psalms 56:13

  194. the psalmist writes,

  195. For you, God,

  196. have delivered my soul from death.

  197. Yes, my feet from falling.

  198. There's the stumbling idea.

  199. That I may walk before God

  200. in the light of life.

  201. In Psalm 66, verse 9,

    Psalms 66:9

  202. refers to God as the one who,

  203. quote,

  204. So the idea of stumbling, right,

  205. it usually connotes the idea

  206. of falling into sin

  207. in such a way that we apostatize.

  208. When someone stumbles, biblically,

  209. they are embracing sin

  210. and intentionally rejecting Christ.

  211. So here's part of the good news.

  212. God is able to keep you

  213. from stumbling.

  214. Or you might say,

  215. Well, what about the false teachers?

  216. Aren't they a threat to us?

  217. And the Psalms have a wonderful prayer

  218. for you to use.

  219. Psalm 140, verses 4 through 5.

    Psalms 140:4–5

  220. The psalmist writes,

  221. Guard me, O Lord,

  222. from the hands of the wicked.

  223. Preserve me from violent men

  224. who have planned to trip up my feet.

  225. The arrogant have hidden a trap for me,

  226. and with cords

  227. they have spread a net.

  228. Beside the way

  229. they have set snares for me.

  230. So the psalmist prays to God

  231. because he knows God is able.

  232. This is true of God over the devil too.

  233. 2 Thessalonians 3, 3.

  234. But the Lord is faithful.

  235. He will establish you

  236. and guard you against the evil one.

  237. So no one will snatch us

  238. from the salvation of the Lord.

  239. So essentially,

  240. Jude is praising God

  241. for his ability

  242. to preserve his elect

  243. unto salvation.

  244. This is what we often call

  245. the doctrine of the perseverance

  246. of the saints.

  247. This biblical doctrine teaches

  248. that those who are truly saved by God

  249. will never lose their salvation.

  250. Rather, they will persevere to the end

  251. by faith in Christ.

  252. And again,

  253. this does not negate

  254. our responsibility to obey.

  255. As Paul so concisely describes

  256. the relationship

  257. between divine sovereignty

  258. and human responsibility

  259. in 2 Timothy 1, 12,

  260. he writes,

  261. But I am not ashamed,

  262. for I know whom I have believed.

  263. And I am convinced

  264. that he,

  265. referring to God,

  266. that God

  267. is able to guard

  268. until that day

  269. what has been entrusted

  270. to me.

  271. So likewise,

  272. we are entrusted

  273. with keeping

  274. our salvation,

  275. yet ultimately,

  276. it is God

  277. who guards us.

  278. And that is very

  279. good news.

  280. That news means

  281. we who are in Christ

  282. already have victory

  283. over any and all

  284. false teachers,

  285. any and all

  286. traps in this world.

  287. So praise the Lord

  288. for his steadfast

  289. faithfulness

  290. to uphold us

  291. against any

  292. and all foes,

  293. any and all

  294. traps,

  295. any and all

  296. temptations.

  297. And not only is God

  298. able to keep you

  299. from stumbling,

  300. but the second half

  301. of verse 24,

  302. he's able to present you

  303. before the presence

  304. of his glory

  305. with great

  306. joy.

  307. So truly,

  308. this is

  309. an astounding

  310. statement.

  311. Jude

  312. is assuming

  313. the gospel

  314. underlying

  315. this statement.

  316. Otherwise,

  317. he would not be able

  318. to make such

  319. a statement.

  320. And I guarantee

  321. you that

  322. Jude's audience

  323. who knew this

  324. gospel well,

  325. as we know

  326. from the earlier

  327. parts of the letter,

  328. that Jude's audience

  329. would immediately

  330. think of the gospel

  331. when they hear

  332. this phrase.

  333. We are not able

  334. to present ourselves

  335. before the presence

  336. of God.

  337. We are sinners.

  338. The Lord says

  339. in Exodus 33,

    Exodus 33:20

  340. verse 20,

  341. no man can see

  342. me and live.

  343. This is because

  344. all of mankind

  345. has fallen in sin.

  346. We are unholy

  347. from the moment

  348. of our conception,

  349. and therefore,

  350. we cannot stand

  351. in the presence

  352. of a holy God.

  353. Psalm 51,

    Psalms 51:5

  354. verse 5,

  355. David says,

  356. behold,

  357. I was brought forth

  358. in iniquity,

  359. and in sin

  360. did my mother

  361. conceive me.

  362. And this is true

  363. of all of mankind.

  364. We are totally

  365. depraved.

  366. And so we are told

  367. from very early on

  368. in the Old Testament

  369. that we need a priest

  370. to intercede for us

  371. so that we can come

  372. before God.

  373. Numbers chapter 3,

    Numbers 3:10

  374. verse 10,

  375. God says to Moses,

  376. So you shall appoint

  377. Aaron and his sons

  378. that they may keep

  379. their priesthood.

  380. But the layman

  381. who comes near,

  382. near to the tabernacle

  383. of God,

  384. that is,

  385. for the layman

  386. who comes near,

  387. he shall be put

  388. to death.

  389. So no one

  390. can stand before

  391. the presence of God

  392. apart from a priest.

  393. We also need

  394. a perfect,

  395. spotless,

  396. blood sacrifice

  397. to atone

  398. for our sins.

  399. And this also

  400. is apparent

  401. in the Old Testament.

  402. Deuteronomy 17,

    Deuteronomy 17:1

  403. verse 1 says,

  404. You shall not

  405. sacrifice to the Lord

  406. your God

  407. an ox or a sheep

  408. in which is a blemish,

  409. any defect whatsoever,

  410. for that is an abomination

  411. to the Lord

  412. your God.

  413. In the New Testament,

  414. Hebrews 9,

    Hebrews 9:22

  415. verse 22,

  416. echoes the need

  417. for blood atonement

  418. and says,

  419. Without the shedding

  420. of blood,

  421. there is no

  422. forgiveness of sins.

  423. But of course,

  424. the constant sacrifice

  425. of goats and bulls

  426. would never atone

  427. for sin.

  428. We needed

  429. a better sacrifice,

  430. a full

  431. and final sacrifice.

  432. We needed

  433. a perfect priest

  434. and a perfect sacrifice

  435. because God's

  436. glorious justice

  437. demands it.

  438. Justice is an

  439. attribute of God

  440. and therefore

  441. it is part

  442. of His glory.

  443. So it is astounding

  444. that Jude is saying

  445. we are presented

  446. as blameless

  447. before the presence

  448. of His glory

  449. because we should die

  450. in the presence

  451. of His glory

  452. since we are not

  453. blameless

  454. in and of

  455. ourselves.

  456. So how can that

  457. be?

  458. Who is our

  459. priest

  460. and who or what

  461. is our

  462. sacrifice?

  463. How could we

  464. possibly stand

  465. in the presence

  466. of God?

  467. And as Jesus

  468. told the disciples

  469. in Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:26

  470. verse 26,

  471. He said of salvation

  472. with man,

  473. this is impossible.

  474. There is no one

  475. worthy to be a priest

  476. on our behalf

  477. who is among us

  478. nor any sacrifice

  479. that we can make

  480. that will save

  481. our souls,

  482. that will atone

  483. for our sin.

  484. But Jesus goes on

  485. in Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:26

  486. verse 26,

  487. and says,

  488. but with God

  489. all things

  490. are possible.

  491. Or as Jude

  492. puts so simply,

  493. to Him

  494. who is able.

  495. God Himself

  496. is able to present

  497. us before Himself

  498. through the God-man,

  499. Jesus Christ.

  500. That is in the next

  501. phrase of Jude's

  502. doxology.

  503. He says in verse 25,

  504. to the only God,

  505. our Savior,

  506. through Jesus Christ,

  507. our Lord.

  508. So there it is.

  509. God

  510. is our Savior.

  511. Somehow

  512. and in some way,

  513. God is the one

  514. who is able

  515. and the one

  516. who is desiring

  517. to save a people

  518. to Himself

  519. because He is a Savior.

  520. It's in His nature.

  521. And because He is Lord,

  522. He has the authority

  523. and the means

  524. to accomplish

  525. such a task.

  526. And so we know,

  527. like Jude's audience,

  528. we know the gospel.

  529. This is not

  530. some mystery to us

  531. in the fullest sense.

  532. We know Christ

  533. is our high priest

  534. who intercedes

  535. on our behalf.

  536. Paul says

  537. in 1 Timothy 2,

    1 Timothy 2:5

  538. verse 5,

  539. there is one God

  540. and there is one

  541. mediator between

  542. God and men,

  543. the man,

  544. Jesus Christ.

  545. Hebrews 3,

    Hebrews 3:1

  546. verse 1 says,

  547. therefore,

  548. holy brothers,

  549. you who share

  550. in a heavenly calling,

  551. consider Jesus

  552. the apostle

  553. and high priest

  554. of our confession.

  555. So God the Son

  556. intercedes

  557. before God the Father

  558. on our behalf.

  559. Christ is also

  560. our perfect sacrifice.

  561. Hebrews 9,

    Hebrews 9:12

  562. verse 12 says,

  563. Christ entered once

  564. for all

  565. into the holy places,

  566. not by means

  567. of the blood

  568. of goats and calves,

  569. but by means

  570. of His own blood,

  571. thus securing

  572. an eternal redemption.

  573. Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:14

  574. verse 14 says,

  575. for by a single offering,

  576. He has perfected

  577. for all time

  578. those who are

  579. being sanctified.

  580. sanctified.

  581. So notice the language here.

  582. We are perfected

  583. for all time.

  584. Another way of saying

  585. we are blameless.

  586. The author of Hebrews

  587. is speaking

  588. in a judicial sense

  589. in which we are

  590. declared righteous

  591. in a court of law,

  592. though practically

  593. we still give way

  594. to sin.

  595. But he also speaks

  596. of a practical righteousness

  597. that we partake in

  598. as we are being

  599. sanctified,

  600. as the author says.

  601. It's an ongoing process.

  602. So, though we sin,

  603. we are growing

  604. in real obedience

  605. every day.

  606. So, through Christ,

  607. you might say,

  608. on account of Christ,

  609. we are saved.

  610. Now remember,

  611. worship is not only

  612. in demand of God,

  613. but it is also

  614. the reward of God

  615. to the elect.

  616. We are so blessed

  617. because we alone,

  618. who are spiritual,

  619. by God's grace,

  620. are able to worship God.

  621. And it is all

  622. of grace.

  623. And I think Jude

  624. primarily intends that

  625. when he says,

  626. through Jesus Christ.

  627. Notice verse 25,

  628. Jude is readdressing God

  629. more explicitly

  630. in the doxology

  631. and says,

  632. to the only God,

  633. our Savior,

  634. through Jesus Christ.

  635. In other words,

  636. Jude is saying,

  637. we are able to offer up

  638. this doxology

  639. on account of

  640. or through

  641. Jesus Christ.

  642. Only through Christ

  643. could we approach

  644. God and worship him

  645. without being slain

  646. where we stand.

  647. Because Christ

  648. has interceded for us.

  649. Because Christ

  650. has made the once

  651. and for all

  652. sacrifice

  653. that seals

  654. our salvation

  655. in him.

  656. So only through Christ

  657. can we approach God

  658. who sits

  659. on the throne

  660. of grace.

  661. And to think

  662. that Christ died

  663. not only to save us

  664. from hell,

  665. which we deserve,

  666. but then we are rewarded

  667. to be able

  668. to worship him.

  669. Why on earth

  670. are we rewarded?

  671. We did nothing.

  672. The only thing

  673. we contributed

  674. to our salvation

  675. is the sin

  676. which made it necessary

  677. as somebody

  678. once said.

  679. And all this stuff

  680. we're talking about

  681. is captured so well

  682. in 1 Peter 2,

    1 Peter 2:9

  683. verse 9.

  684. Peter writes,

  685. but you believers

  686. are a chosen race,

  687. a royal priesthood,

  688. a holy nation,

  689. a people for God's

  690. own possession,

  691. that you may,

  692. so there's a purpose statement

  693. in what Peter's about to say,

  694. that you may

  695. proclaim the excellencies

  696. of God

  697. who called you

  698. out of darkness

  699. into his marvelous light.

  700. We are saved

  701. from death,

  702. from hell,

  703. and we are saved

  704. to worship.

  705. And don't miss this.

  706. Go back to the end

  707. of verse 24.

  708. Jude says,

  709. we will be presented

  710. with great joy.

  711. So in your English translation,

  712. you kind of assume

  713. that Jude is saying

  714. that God himself

  715. presents us

  716. with great joy,

  717. which is theologically

  718. true and wonderful.

  719. But the Greek indicates

  720. that Jude is saying

  721. we will be

  722. with great joy

  723. in the presence of God.

  724. And for obvious reasons,

  725. right?

  726. We are spared

  727. eternal torment

  728. and give an eternal life

  729. dwelling with our

  730. all-glorious God,

  731. whom we get to enjoy

  732. forever

  733. by worshiping him.

  734. No longer ashamed

  735. to be in the presence

  736. of God

  737. as Adam and Eve were

  738. when they hid in the garden.

  739. No longer afraid

  740. to be in the presence

  741. of God

  742. as Isaiah was

  743. and the disciples

  744. on the Mount

  745. of Transfiguration.

  746. But with great joy

  747. we will be

  748. in the presence

  749. of God

  750. because Christ

  751. has removed

  752. all of our guilt,

  753. all of our shame.

  754. Praise the Lord.

  755. And Jude goes on.

  756. He says,

  757. to this Savior God,

  758. he says,

  759. be glory,

  760. majesty,

  761. dominion,

  762. and authority.

  763. So be glory.

  764. This term glory

  765. you might say

  766. is shorthand

  767. to describe

  768. all of God.

  769. God.

  770. Again,

  771. we can't know God

  772. exhaustively,

  773. but because he has revealed

  774. to us that he is

  775. all-glorious,

  776. we can know that

  777. in his totality

  778. he is glorious.

  779. Not one aspect

  780. of his three persons,

  781. of his one divine essence,

  782. not one aspect

  783. of his attributes

  784. or anything else

  785. about him

  786. is not glorious

  787. because he is

  788. all-glorious.

  789. And this serves

  790. as a statement

  791. to undermine

  792. the false teachers

  793. whom Jude writes against.

  794. They attempt

  795. to profane

  796. the glory of God

  797. by teaching

  798. their wicked

  799. lifestyles,

  800. but that does not

  801. add up

  802. when you worship

  803. an all-glorious

  804. God.

  805. And Jude says,

  806. be majesty.

  807. And this term

  808. follows glory

  809. in many ways.

  810. It captures

  811. the grandeur

  812. and awe

  813. of God.

  814. So majestic

  815. are his ways

  816. and so glorious

  817. are his ways.

  818. Jude cannot

  819. help himself

  820. but find a synonym

  821. to double down

  822. on the majesty

  823. and glory

  824. of God.

  825. Again,

  826. what a counter

  827. to the false teachers

  828. who want to pervert

  829. everything.

  830. How could they

  831. possibly worship

  832. such a God

  833. with their teachings

  834. and their

  835. living?

  836. And Jude says,

  837. be dominion

  838. and authority

  839. to this God.

  840. Again,

  841. Jude uses

  842. two similar words

  843. to give

  844. a description

  845. to a general

  846. idea,

  847. to give a general

  848. idea much

  849. weight.

  850. And the idea

  851. is simply

  852. God's sovereignty

  853. over all

  854. things.

  855. Everything is

  856. within his

  857. dominion.

  858. And dominion

  859. is another way

  860. to say his

  861. power in this

  862. context.

  863. God has power

  864. to do

  865. what he

  866. wills.

  867. And rightfully

  868. so because he

  869. has the authority

  870. to carry it

  871. out.

  872. There's no one

  873. higher than our

  874. king of kings.

  875. There's no one

  876. whom God must

  877. give an account

  878. to or answer

  879. to.

  880. God reigns

  881. far above

  882. the heavens

  883. and the earth.

  884. And he is the

  885. creator

  886. of the universe

  887. and therefore

  888. has authority

  889. over all

  890. things.

  891. All things

  892. give an account

  893. to him.

  894. From every

  895. blade of grass

  896. to every

  897. person,

  898. to every

  899. planet,

  900. all things

  901. are under

  902. him.

  903. And what a

  904. comfort it

  905. must be

  906. to Jude's

  907. audience to

  908. worship such

  909. a God.

  910. A God

  911. who has the

  912. power and

  913. the authority

  914. to keep

  915. them guarded

  916. against false

  917. teaching.

  918. And think

  919. more broadly

  920. too.

  921. A God who

  922. is able to

  923. guard them

  924. against their

  925. own flesh

  926. or against

  927. the devil

  928. and against

  929. any and

  930. all who

  931. oppose him.

  932. Who can

  933. contend

  934. with the

  935. Lord?

  936. Nobody.

  937. God.

  938. And all

  939. of these

  940. attributes of

  941. God have

  942. been his

  943. from all

  944. eternity

  945. past and

  946. future.

  947. God does

  948. not change.

  949. He is

  950. immutable.

  951. So something

  952. to know

  953. about doxologies

  954. is that they

  955. always include

  956. the duration

  957. or the time

  958. for which the

  959. author believes

  960. the praise

  961. or worship

  962. should endure.

  963. And here

  964. is the

  965. duration for

  966. which a

  967. Jew believes

  968. God should

  969. be worshipped.

  970. He says

  971. in the second

  972. half of verse

  973. 25,

  974. before all

  975. time and

  976. now and

  977. forever.

  978. This is the

  979. great I am

  980. who we are

  981. talking about

  982. after all.

  983. The Alpha

  984. and the Omega,

  985. the only one

  986. who is without

  987. beginning or

  988. end.

  989. And because of

  990. his eternality,

  991. because of his

  992. infiniteness,

  993. because he is

  994. unchanging and

  995. immutable,

  996. because he is

  997. all glorious,

  998. he must be

  999. worshipped

  1000. always.

  1001. He is worthy.

  1002. So finally,

  1003. Jude concludes

  1004. with the only

  1005. word fitting

  1006. to end

  1007. this epistle,

  1008. and the only

  1009. word fitting

  1010. to end

  1011. this magnificent

  1012. doxology.

  1013. He says,

  1014. Amen.

  1015. In verse

  1016. 25.

  1017. Now this

  1018. word connotes

  1019. a great deal

  1020. and has such

  1021. a variety

  1022. to its potential

  1023. meaning.

  1024. I heard Al

  1025. Mulder preach

  1026. on this text

  1027. once,

  1028. and he said,

  1029. of all the

  1030. words in

  1031. this text,

  1032. this is the

  1033. word he is

  1034. the most

  1035. unsure of

  1036. as to what

  1037. exactly it

  1038. means,

  1039. so that is

  1040. pretty intimidating.

  1041. He is a

  1042. very smart

  1043. guy.

  1044. But the

  1045. gist of the

  1046. meaning of

  1047. this word

  1048. in this

  1049. context

  1050. is truly.

  1051. Jude writes

  1052. the word as

  1053. a way of

  1054. acknowledging

  1055. the truthfulness

  1056. of everything

  1057. that has been

  1058. said so far.

  1059. This is the

  1060. very same

  1061. word in

  1062. Greek that

  1063. our Lord

  1064. uses often

  1065. when we

  1066. translate

  1067. truly,

  1068. truly,

  1069. I say unto

  1070. you.

  1071. He is actually

  1072. saying,

  1073. Amen,

  1074. Amen,

  1075. I say unto

  1076. you.

  1077. It is a

  1078. word one

  1079. would use

  1080. to express

  1081. their total

  1082. agreement to

  1083. something,

  1084. or their

  1085. total commitment

  1086. to something.

  1087. And so

  1088. Jude is saying

  1089. that with all

  1090. this truth,

  1091. he is in

  1092. total agreement.

  1093. There is not

  1094. one aspect of

  1095. this letter

  1096. that he has

  1097. written that

  1098. he is concerned

  1099. about or somehow

  1100. secretly against

  1101. or not in

  1102. line with,

  1103. but he is in

  1104. total agreement.

  1105. covenant.

  1106. And this

  1107. also is a

  1108. writing convention,

  1109. right?

  1110. In the New

  1111. Testament era,

  1112. the epistles

  1113. would be read

  1114. aloud to the

  1115. congregation.

  1116. And when they

  1117. ended with

  1118. Amen,

  1119. it was understood

  1120. that the

  1121. congregation as

  1122. a whole would

  1123. recite this

  1124. special word

  1125. as well,

  1126. a way to

  1127. signify that

  1128. we, the

  1129. church,

  1130. are unified

  1131. in Christ,

  1132. that we are

  1133. one in

  1134. Christ,

  1135. and that we

  1136. are in

  1137. agreement with

  1138. these things,

  1139. that we hold

  1140. these things

  1141. to be true

  1142. and will

  1143. therefore live

  1144. in light of

  1145. these truths.

  1146. It's a way

  1147. for the church

  1148. to respond

  1149. to this

  1150. epistle,

  1151. a way for

  1152. the church

  1153. to say,

  1154. yes,

  1155. we too

  1156. are in

  1157. line,

  1158. we too

  1159. will submit

  1160. and find

  1161. these things

  1162. to be true

  1163. and wonderful

  1164. and good.

  1165. So we,

  1166. the church,

  1167. affirm these

  1168. things.

  1169. We are

  1170. in

  1171. agreement.

  1172. That is

  1173. what Jude's

  1174. audience would

  1175. signify when

  1176. they say

  1177. together,

  1178. amen.

  1179. And so

  1180. in a

  1181. similar

  1182. spirit,

  1183. I would

  1184. like to

  1185. read the

  1186. doxology

  1187. one more

  1188. time in

  1189. full.

  1190. And at

  1191. the end,

  1192. I would

  1193. like for

  1194. us all

  1195. to say

  1196. amen

  1197. together

  1198. as well.

  1199. But I

  1200. will warn

  1201. you,

  1202. do not

  1203. say so

  1204. lightly.

  1205. Let your

  1206. yes be your

  1207. yes and your

  1208. no be your

  1209. no,

  1210. only affirm

  1211. these things,

  1212. all of what

  1213. Jude has

  1214. said,

  1215. if you

  1216. actually

  1217. believe it,

  1218. if you're

  1219. actually going

  1220. to live

  1221. in light

  1222. of it.

  1223. And I'll

  1224. tell you that

  1225. a good

  1226. indication of

  1227. whether or

  1228. not you

  1229. say amen

  1230. with sincerity

  1231. is whether or

  1232. not you go

  1233. about this

  1234. week

  1235. worshiping

  1236. God,

  1237. whether or

  1238. not you

  1239. are able

  1240. to think

  1241. over the

  1242. truths

  1243. that we

  1244. have dwelled

  1245. on these

  1246. last few

  1247. weeks with

  1248. agreement,

  1249. joy,

  1250. and sobriety.

  1251. Whether or

  1252. not you

  1253. are able

  1254. to consider

  1255. Jude in

  1256. light of

  1257. all of

  1258. scripture

  1259. and God's

  1260. plan to

  1261. judge the

  1262. wicked and

  1263. save his

  1264. chosen,

  1265. whether or

  1266. not you

  1267. are working

  1268. to obey

  1269. him,

  1270. these things

  1271. will indicate

  1272. whether or

  1273. not you're

  1274. sincere.

  1275. Because only

  1276. in these

  1277. things then

  1278. are you in

  1279. submission to

  1280. the will

  1281. of God,

  1282. because you

  1283. delight in

  1284. God and

  1285. all that he's

  1286. doing and

  1287. all that he

  1288. is and

  1289. all that he

  1290. demands,

  1291. then you

  1292. can say

  1293. amen.

  1294. So in

  1295. closing,

  1296. I'm going to

  1297. read it one

  1298. last time,

  1299. and again,

  1300. I'd like for

  1301. us all to

  1302. say this in

  1303. agreement,

  1304. as the

  1305. church,

  1306. in Christ.

  1307. So Jude

  1308. writes,

  1309. Now to

  1310. him who is

  1311. able to

  1312. keep you

  1313. from stumbling

  1314. and to

  1315. present you

  1316. blameless

  1317. before the

  1318. presence of

  1319. his glory

  1320. with great

  1321. joy,

  1322. to the

  1323. only God

  1324. our Savior,

  1325. through

  1326. Jesus Christ

  1327. our Lord,

  1328. be glory,

  1329. majesty,

  1330. dominion,

  1331. and authority

  1332. before all

  1333. time and

  1334. now and

  1335. forever.

  1336. Amen.
