    Romans 1 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today at long last is Romans chapter 1, verses 16 and 17.

    Romans 1:16

  3. !

  4. Verse 16 and 17 state the thesis or the theme of the entirety of the letter, and we must be careful to get these verses rightly understood.

  5. I'm grateful that over the coming, let me suggest, years, we will be unpacking the content of these two verses.

  6. The pastor, Martin Lloyd-Jones, in his preaching of these verses, which he preached four sermons on, said,

  7. I suppose that, in a sense, there are no two verses of greater importance in the whole of Scripture than the two verses which we are now considering.

  8. You see, if we misunderstand these verses, then we will find ourselves misunderstanding the gospel itself.

  9. If we don't get these verses right, our evangelism will go awry, and we will lose our ability to be effective witnesses to our great salvation.

  10. We will either get the message itself wrong, or we will get the methodology of preaching that message wrong, and likely both.

  11. However, if we, by the power of the Spirit, can rightly understand these two verses and Paul's expounding of them over the next 16 chapters,

  12. then perhaps we can be used of God to see his kingdom advance, and there is no greater joy for the Christian than to be joined in God's purpose in the world.

  13. So, with the weight these two verses deserve, and with the favor of our God, let's read them and work to wrap our minds around their meaning this morning.

  14. Before I read just these two verses, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  15. It was written for his glory and our good, and so we would do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises, to obey its commands.

  16. Paul writes,

  17. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for our salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  18. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  19. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  20. These two verses contain the theme of Paul's letter to the Roman believers, which I've stated before.

  21. Justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  22. If we are ever to be declared before God as a righteous judge, justified, forgiven, found righteous,

  23. this will happen by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  24. Before we consider these verses at length, I would like to point out the logical progression of Paul's writing.

  25. Note the word for at the very beginning of verse 16.

  26. Paul's writing is full of for's and therefore's.

  27. One assertion building on the next.

  28. We have in our text today a four at the beginning, another halfway through verse 16, another at the beginning of verse 17,

  29. and then we will see one at the beginning of verse 18, verse 19, and verse 20.

  30. A therefore at the beginning of verse 24, and two fours in verse 26.

  31. All of these are just the fours and therefore's that begin in verse 16 and go through the end of the chapter.

  32. And I point this out to you simply to show you the logical progression of Paul's case.

  33. And this is the way that he most regularly wrote and ministered the gospel.

  34. Acts chapter 17, beginning in verse 2, we see the record that Paul went in as was his custom.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  35. And on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the scriptures,

  36. explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead and saying,

  37. this Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ.

  38. And then Luke records for us in verse 4 of Acts 17,

  39. and some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas.

  40. This was his regular habit.

  41. He reasoned with people.

  42. The great reformer Martin Luther would say to those who disagreed with him,

  43. show me from the scripture and plain reason.

  44. Help me to think and to understand.

  45. Now, from time to time, Paul seems to become enraptured with some glorious truth of God

  46. and erupt into praise in the form of a doxology.

  47. I'm thankful for those texts.

  48. But most often, he progresses neatly from one assertion to the next,

  49. which means we must be careful to pay attention to the entirety of his argument if we want to understand it.

  50. And it's a danger with all the Bible to take it out and selectively look at passages,

  51. little texts here and there.

  52. People have erred greatly across history in doing so.

  53. I think especially with Paul and especially with Romans,

  54. we need to see the progressive argument that he is making.

  55. This is going to become increasingly important as our study through this letter continues.

  56. How do we rightly understand Romans chapter 9 and 10 and 11 in light of chapter 1, verse 16 and 17?

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  57. We need to work to get this correct today.

  58. In the case of this very first four in verse 16, in light of all that I said,

  59. let's note what precedes it in verses 14 and 15.

  60. Paul says there,

  61. I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.

  62. So I'm eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

  63. He speaks in verse 5 of chapter 1 of being sent to bring about the obedience of faith

  64. for the sake of his name among all the nations.

  65. And he sees this as an obligation, as stated in verse 14.

  66. But it's not an obligation he takes up begrudgingly,

  67. but with eagerness, he tells us in verse 15.

  68. So why?

  69. Why is Paul so eager under this obligation to preach the gospel to all peoples?

  70. He tells us, verse 16,

  71. for, because I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  72. for it's the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  73. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  74. Paul says,

  75. I have been sent to the nations, so as a servant of Christ Jesus,

  76. see verse 1.

  77. I am obligated to Jews and Gentiles, verse 14.

  78. And I am eager to preach to everyone because

  79. the gospel is the power of God

  80. for salvation.

  81. Paul is eager to see the power of the gospel

  82. on display amongst those

  83. in Rome.

  84. But note,

  85. he inserts a curious phrase before declaring

  86. that the gospel is the power of God

  87. for salvation.

  88. He could have simply said that,

  89. but he says,

  90. I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  91. for it is the power of God

  92. for salvation.

  93. I am not ashamed

  94. of the gospel.

  95. Paul here uses a literary technique

  96. that he uses

  97. elsewhere.

  98. I'll spare you the details

  99. of that technique.

  100. But what he does is he makes his point

  101. in stating the negative

  102. of that point.

  103. He says,

  104. I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  105. by which we understand

  106. that he is instead

  107. proud of the gospel.

  108. But why not simply say that?

  109. Why not just say,

  110. I do this,

  111. I am eager to do it,

  112. because I am proud of this gospel message

  113. in which I preach.

  114. The opposite is true.

  115. He is proud of it.

  116. But why state it in the negative form instead?

  117. He says,

  118. I am not ashamed

  119. of the gospel.

  120. Now, it is, of course,

  121. difficult to know

  122. the mind of Paul,

  123. but I wholeheartedly believe

  124. he does so

  125. because we tend toward

  126. being ashamed,

  127. not toward being proud

  128. of the gospel.

  129. Perhaps he had heard

  130. that the Roman believers

  131. needed to be encouraged

  132. in this way.

  133. But I think more likely

  134. he knew

  135. that his tendency

  136. and ours,

  137. the Roman believers' tendency,

  138. is toward shame,

  139. towards feeling ashamed

  140. of the gospel

  141. rather than towards being

  142. proud

  143. of the gospel.

  144. And I can think of at least

  145. two reasons

  146. that this may be the case,

  147. why we might

  148. tend towards feeling ashamed

  149. of the gospel.

  150. Number one,

  151. the gospel doesn't speak

  152. to the world

  153. using the world's economy.

  154. It begins metaphysically,

  155. a baby born to a virgin.

  156. It is saturated

  157. with humility,

  158. a baby born

  159. to insignificant people

  160. in an insignificant place,

  161. laid in a manger,

  162. worshipped by shepherds,

  163. a savior trained

  164. as a carpenter

  165. with nowhere

  166. to lay his head,

  167. traveling around

  168. with an insignificant,

  169. bumbling band

  170. of men,

  171. saying things

  172. like this,

  173. blessed

  174. are the poor

  175. in spirit,

  176. for theirs

  177. is the kingdom

  178. of heaven.

  179. Blessed are those

  180. who mourn,

  181. for they

  182. shall be comforted.

  183. Blessed are the meek,

  184. for they shall inherit

  185. the earth.

  186. Blessed are those

  187. who hunger

  188. and thirst

  189. for righteousness,

  190. for they

  191. shall be satisfied.

  192. Blessed are the merciful,

  193. for they shall receive

  194. mercy.

  195. Blessed are the pure

  196. in heart,

  197. for they

  198. shall see God.

  199. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  200. for they shall be called

  201. sons of God.

  202. Blessed are those

  203. who are persecuted

  204. for righteousness' sake,

  205. for theirs

  206. is the kingdom

  207. of heaven.

  208. Jesus came

  209. and flipped

  210. the logic

  211. of the world

  212. upside down.

  213. And they were

  214. looking for him

  215. to be a Christ

  216. that would come

  217. and ride victorious

  218. and defeat Rome

  219. on behalf

  220. of Israel.

  221. But instead,

  222. our Savior

  223. was a Savior

  224. who was crucified

  225. on a cross.

  226. The world

  227. is inclined

  228. to listen

  229. to messages

  230. that are about

  231. self-worth

  232. and about pride.

  233. Messages that tell

  234. people that they

  235. are valuable

  236. and worthy

  237. and generally

  238. just okay.

  239. But beloved,

  240. the gospel

  241. does not begin

  242. with this message.

  243. The gospel

  244. begins

  245. with humility.

  246. It begins

  247. with brokenness

  248. over sin.

  249. It begins

  250. with offense.

  251. The good news

  252. at first

  253. is bad news

  254. apart from the

  255. saving work

  256. of Jesus Christ

  257. by grace alone,

  258. through faith alone,

  259. in Christ alone.

  260. We are

  261. utterly wretched

  262. of no spiritual worth,

  263. rebels against

  264. our maker.

  265. The gospel

  266. begins

  267. with

  268. humility.

  269. It becomes

  270. good news

  271. to people

  272. who are broken,

  273. humbled

  274. because of their sin.

  275. the Puritan

  276. Thomas Watson

  277. once said,

  278. until sin

  279. be bitter,

  280. Christ

  281. will not

  282. be sweet.

  283. If a

  284. quote-unquote

  285. gospel

  286. is being preached

  287. that agrees

  288. with the carnal man,

  289. then we must

  290. become very

  291. suspect

  292. of that gospel

  293. because it is

  294. likely not

  295. the gospel

  296. at all.

  297. The gospel

  298. first

  299. offends

  300. the unbelieving

  301. person

  302. because it

  303. strikes

  304. at their

  305. pride.

  306. But if it

  307. has

  308. its good

  309. effect,

  310. then it

  311. brings him

  312. low

  313. that God

  314. might

  315. exalt

  316. him

  317. in Jesus.

  318. The gospel

  319. first

  320. breaks

  321. that it

  322. might

  323. build

  324. up.

  325. So the

  326. world

  327. is not

  328. inclined

  329. to like

  330. this message

  331. and it's

  332. inclined

  333. to push

  334. back

  335. against

  336. this

  337. message

  338. which

  339. can

  340. in our

  341. hearts

  342. make us

  343. ashamed

  344. of this

  345. message.

  346. The second

  347. reason that I

  348. can think

  349. of that we

  350. might become

  351. ashamed of

  352. the message

  353. is that the

  354. gospel isn't

  355. a philosophical

  356. system designed

  357. to be mused

  358. over.

  359. It's not just

  360. ideas to be

  361. thought about.

  362. It demands

  363. obedience,

  364. decision,

  365. allegiance.

  366. It requires

  367. something

  368. of us.

  369. The world

  370. loves to

  371. speak and

  372. think about

  373. things that

  374. have no

  375. real bearing

  376. on life.

  377. Those of

  378. you who

  379. have taken

  380. a philosophy

  381. course have

  382. been exposed

  383. to this.

  384. You maybe

  385. take the

  386. easy A,

  387. but you

  388. think,

  389. what are

  390. we doing?

  391. Paul

  392. certainly

  393. had been

  394. exposed to

  395. this.

  396. This is

  397. not a

  398. new thing

  399. in our

  400. day.

  401. In

  402. Acts chapter

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  403. 17,

  404. again,

  405. we see

  406. recorded,

  407. now,

  408. while Paul

  409. was waiting

  410. for them

  411. at Athens,

  412. his spirit

  413. was provoked

  414. within him

  415. as he saw

  416. that city

  417. was full

  418. of idols.

  419. So he,

  420. here he

  421. again is,

  422. reasoned in

  423. the synagogue

  424. with the

  425. Jews and

  426. the devout

  427. persons and

  428. in the

  429. marketplace

  430. every day

  431. with those

  432. who happened

  433. to be

  434. there.

  435. Some of

  436. the Epicurean

  437. and Stoic

  438. philosophers

  439. also conversed

  440. with him

  441. and some

  442. said,

  443. what does

  444. this babbler

  445. wish to

  446. say?

  447. Others

  448. said,

  449. he seems

  450. to be a

  451. preacher

  452. of foreign

  453. divinities

  454. because he

  455. was preaching

  456. Jesus

  457. and the

  458. resurrection.

  459. And they

  460. took him

  461. and brought

  462. him to

  463. the

  464. Oropagus

  465. saying,

  466. may we

  467. know what

  468. this new

  469. teaching is

  470. that you

  471. are presenting

  472. for you

  473. bring some

  474. strange thing

  475. to our

  476. ears.

  477. We wish

  478. to know

  479. therefore

  480. what these

  481. things

  482. mean.

  483. Now all

  484. the Athenians,

  485. Luke tells

  486. us,

  487. and the

  488. foreigners

  489. who lived

  490. there would

  491. spend their

  492. time in

  493. nothing except

  494. telling or

  495. hearing something

  496. new.

  497. Later on in

  498. the chapter,

  499. Luke records,

  500. now when they

  501. heard the

  502. resurrection of

  503. the dead,

  504. some mocked.

  505. Some mocked

  506. Paul.

  507. His message

  508. was just getting

  509. a little too

  510. weird for them.

  511. And he

  512. expected something

  513. of them.

  514. in verse

  515. 30,

  516. he stated,

  517. the times

  518. of ignorance

  519. God

  520. overlooked,

  521. but now

  522. he commands

  523. all people

  524. everywhere

  525. to repent.

  526. Gospel

  527. message is

  528. not merely

  529. a thing

  530. to be thought

  531. about and

  532. mulled over,

  533. but something

  534. to respond

  535. to.

  536. It demands

  537. something

  538. of us.

  539. The gospel

  540. doesn't pull

  541. any punches.

  542. It calls

  543. people to

  544. repent

  545. and believe.

  546. Turn from

  547. your sin,

  548. dear sinner,

  549. and throw

  550. yourself on

  551. the mercies

  552. of God

  553. in Christ.

  554. The world

  555. thinks itself

  556. wise,

  557. and it

  558. wants to

  559. take up

  560. ideas that

  561. have no

  562. real

  563. consequence.

  564. The gospel

  565. has consequence.

  566. Paul writes

  567. to the

  568. Corinthian

  569. believers

  570. in 1

  571. Corinthians

  572. 3,

  573. 18,

  574. let no

  575. one deceive

  576. himself,

  577. if anyone

  578. among you

  579. thinks that

  580. he is wise

  581. in this

  582. age,

  583. let him

  584. become a

  585. fool

  586. that he

  587. may become

  588. wise.

  589. I had a

  590. conversation

  591. with family

  592. members a

  593. couple of

  594. days ago

  595. who were

  596. wrestling with

  597. how to best

  598. love their

  599. lesbian

  600. neighbors

  601. with the

  602. truth.

  603. A couple

  604. who had

  605. lived together

  606. and were

  607. quote unquote

  608. married for

  609. some years

  610. brothers.

  611. And their

  612. well-meaning

  613. concern was

  614. the gospel's

  615. offense at

  616. their identity

  617. as a couple.

  618. And they

  619. asked the

  620. question,

  621. how should

  622. we approach

  623. them?

  624. The concern,

  625. I think,

  626. well-meaning

  627. concern was

  628. that they

  629. would be

  630. offensive to

  631. them and

  632. that maybe

  633. they wouldn't

  634. be able to

  635. talk to

  636. them again.

  637. And I

  638. just replied,

  639. simply say,

  640. we love

  641. you.

  642. And because

  643. we love

  644. you,

  645. flee from

  646. the wrath

  647. to come.

  648. This life

  649. is but a

  650. vapor,

  651. and it

  652. will be

  653. over in

  654. a moment,

  655. and then

  656. you'll stand

  657. before God

  658. in judgment.

  659. Flee from

  660. the wrath

  661. to come.

  662. To withhold

  663. this from

  664. them is

  665. altogether

  666. unloving.

  667. Each and

  668. every one

  669. of us

  670. have heard

  671. and need

  672. to hear,

  673. flee from

  674. the wrath

  675. to come.

  676. Flee to

  677. Christ.

  678. Find the

  679. salvation of

  680. your soul,

  681. your justification

  682. before God

  683. by grace

  684. alone,

  685. through faith

  686. alone,

  687. in Christ

  688. alone.

  689. Beloved,

  690. for the good

  691. of all

  692. mankind,

  693. we must

  694. join with

  695. Paul in

  696. declaring we

  697. are not

  698. ashamed of

  699. the gospel.

  700. The gospel

  701. is powerful

  702. to save,

  703. but it will

  704. offend.

  705. It will

  706. offend.

  707. And we

  708. must be

  709. aware that

  710. the temptation

  711. in our

  712. hearts is

  713. to be

  714. ashamed of

  715. it,

  716. to shrink

  717. back when

  718. we should

  719. press

  720. forward,

  721. to boldly

  722. proclaim

  723. this truth.

  724. This world

  725. is in

  726. desperate

  727. need

  728. of the

  729. gospel.

  730. Paul

  731. continues

  732. to build

  733. his

  734. argument.

  735. He's not

  736. ashamed of

  737. the gospel

  738. for,

  739. because,

  740. it is

  741. the power

  742. of God

  743. for salvation

  744. to everyone

  745. who believes.

  746. God's

  747. word in

  748. the

  749. gospel.

  750. The great

  751. trouble of

  752. the

  753. Christianity

  754. of our

  755. day

  756. and our

  757. culture

  758. is

  759. pragmatism.

  760. It is a

  761. cancer in

  762. the bones

  763. of the

  764. church.

  765. And that

  766. is,

  767. I think,

  768. well-meaning

  769. people,

  770. wanting to

  771. see people

  772. respond in

  773. faith to

  774. the gospel

  775. will justify

  776. any means

  777. to get

  778. people to

  779. that

  780. ends.

  781. They've

  782. abandoned

  783. God's

  784. ways.

  785. They've

  786. abandoned

  787. his

  788. word

  789. in

  790. order

  791. to

  792. convince

  793. people

  794. to

  795. follow

  796. Christ.

  797. And the

  798. concern

  799. becomes,

  800. are people

  801. truly

  802. following

  803. the

  804. Lord

  805. Jesus?

  806. Have

  807. they

  808. repented

  809. and

  810. believed

  811. if we

  812. haven't

  813. preached

  814. to

  815. them

  816. the

  817. gospel?

  818. If

  819. we've

  820. said

  821. to

  822. them,

  823. you're

  824. generally

  825. okay,

  826. and what

  827. you need

  828. is a

  829. little

  830. extra,

  831. a little

  832. additive

  833. to your

  834. life.

  835. If we

  836. haven't

  837. said

  838. to

  839. them,

  840. you

  841. are

  842. altogether

  843. unrighteous,

  844. and what

  845. you need

  846. is what

  847. the

  848. reformers

  849. called

  850. an alien

  851. righteousness,

  852. a righteousness

  853. that comes

  854. from someone

  855. else,

  856. the righteousness

  857. of Christ,

  858. then aren't

  859. we just

  860. damning

  861. them to

  862. labor

  863. harder,

  864. to do

  865. more,

  866. that they

  867. might gain

  868. their way

  869. to God?

  870. The

  871. gospel

  872. message is

  873. the means

  874. that God

  875. uses to

  876. bring about

  877. the salvation

  878. of his

  879. people.

  880. You

  881. were

  882. desperately

  883. lost

  884. apart

  885. from

  886. Christ.

  887. Christ

  888. lived the

  889. life

  890. that's

  891. required

  892. of

  893. you.

  894. He

  895. died

  896. the

  897. death

  898. that

  899. you

  900. deserve,

  901. that

  902. in

  903. him

  904. you

  905. might

  906. be

  907. forgiven

  908. of

  909. your

  910. sins

  911. and

  912. you

  913. might

  914. have

  915. his

  916. righteousness.

  917. The

  918. great

  919. exchange,

  920. double

  921. imputation,

  922. !

  923. This

  924. wonderful

  925. doctrine

  926. that we

  927. can be

  928. restored

  929. to

  930. God

  931. in

  932. Jesus.

  933. God

  934. will

  935. bear

  936. up

  937. under

  938. the

  939. weight

  940. of

  941. a

  942. world

  943. that

  944. is

  945. hostile

  946. toward

  947. the

  948. gospel

  949. if

  950. we

  951. don't

  952. believe

  953. that

  954. it

  955. is

  956. the

  957. power

  958. of

  959. God

  960. for

  961. salvation

  962. to

  963. everyone

  964. who

  965. believes.

  966. If

  967. we

  968. think

  969. somehow

  970. our

  971. methodology

  972. will

  973. convince

  974. people

  975. to

  976. follow

  977. Christ

  978. in

  979. a

  980. world

  981. that

  982. is

  983. vastly

  984. and

  985. rapidly

  986. becoming

  987. post-Christian.

  988. Paul

  989. had

  990. certainly

  991. had

  992. his

  993. allegiance

  994. tested.

  995. He

  996. did not

  997. live in

  998. an easy

  999. time

  1000. to

  1001. proclaim

  1002. this

  1003. gospel.

  1004. He

  1005. tells

  1006. the

  1007. Corinthian

  1008. believers

  1009. in

  1010. Corinthians

  1011. chapter

  1012. 11

  1013. verse

  1014. 24

  1015. and

  1016. following

  1017. five

  1018. times

  1019. I

  1020. received

  1021. at

  1022. the

  1023. hands

  1024. of

  1025. the

  1026. Jews

  1027. the

  1028. forty

  1029. lashes

  1030. less

  1031. one

  1032. three

  1033. times

  1034. I

  1035. was

  1036. beaten

  1037. with

  1038. rods

  1039. once

  1040. I

  1041. was

  1042. stoned

  1043. three

  1044. times

  1045. I

  1046. was

  1047. shipwrecked

  1048. a night

  1049. and a

  1050. day

  1051. I

  1052. was

  1053. adrift

  1054. at

  1055. sea

  1056. on

  1057. frequent

  1058. journeys

  1059. in

  1060. danger

  1061. from

  1062. rivers

  1063. danger

  1064. from

  1065. robbers

  1066. danger

  1067. from

  1068. my

  1069. own

  1070. people

  1071. danger

  1072. from

  1073. Gentiles

  1074. danger

  1075. in

  1076. the

  1077. city

  1078. danger

  1079. in

  1080. the

  1081. wilderness

  1082. danger

  1083. at

  1084. sea

  1085. danger

  1086. from

  1087. false

  1088. brothers

  1089. in

  1090. often

  1091. without

  1092. food

  1093. in

  1094. cold

  1095. and

  1096. exposure

  1097. and

  1098. none

  1099. of us

  1100. can

  1101. identify

  1102. with

  1103. Paul

  1104. in

  1105. this

  1106. way

  1107. and

  1108. yet

  1109. Paul

  1110. says

  1111. I

  1112. am

  1113. not

  1114. ashamed

  1115. of

  1116. the

  1117. gospel

  1118. for

  1119. it

  1120. is

  1121. the

  1122. power

  1123. of

  1124. God

  1125. for

  1126. salvation

  1127. to

  1128. everyone

  1129. who

  1130. believes

  1131. and

  1132. he

  1133. just

  1134. kept

  1135. right

  1136. on

  1137. preaching

  1138. it

  1139. why

  1140. why

  1141. would

  1142. we

  1143. be

  1144. ashamed

  1145. Paul

  1146. knew

  1147. that

  1148. the

  1149. gospel

  1150. was

  1151. powerful

  1152. to

  1153. save

  1154. and

  1155. that

  1156. it

  1157. must

  1158. !

  1159. preached

  1160. he

  1161. says

  1162. later

  1163. in

  1164. the

  1165. book

  1166. of

  1167. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  1168. chapter

  1169. 10

  1170. and

  1171. verse

  1172. 14

  1173. how

  1174. then

  1175. will

  1176. they

  1177. call

  1178. on

  1179. him

  1180. in

  1181. whom

  1182. they

  1183. have

  1184. not

  1185. believed

  1186. and

  1187. how

  1188. are

  1189. they

  1190. to

  1191. believe

  1192. in

  1193. him

  1194. whom

  1195. they

  1196. have

  1197. never

  1198. heard

  1199. and

  1200. how

  1201. are

  1202. they

  1203. to

  1204. hear

  1205. without

  1206. someone

  1207. preaching

  1208. Paul

  1209. didn't

  1210. separate

  1211. himself

  1212. from

  1213. the

  1214. means

  1215. of

  1216. God

  1217. using

  1218. the

  1219. gospel

  1220. powerfully

  1221. to

  1222. save

  1223. people

  1224. now

  1225. evangelicals

  1226. have

  1227. been

  1228. historically

  1229. good

  1230. at

  1231. guilting

  1232. congregants

  1233. into

  1234. being

  1235. shares

  1236. of

  1237. the

  1238. gospel

  1239. and

  1240. this

  1241. is

  1242. not

  1243. my

  1244. goal

  1245. here

  1246. let me

  1247. remind

  1248. you

  1249. that

  1250. Paul

  1251. expresses

  1252. his

  1253. obligation

  1254. in

  1255. verse

  1256. 14

  1257. but

  1258. also

  1259. his

  1260. eagerness

  1261. in

  1262. verse

  1263. 15

  1264. his

  1265. task

  1266. was

  1267. a

  1268. joyful

  1269. task

  1270. because

  1271. he

  1272. was

  1273. not

  1274. ashamed

  1275. of

  1276. the

  1277. gospel

  1278. because

  1279. it

  1280. is

  1281. the

  1282. power

  1283. of

  1284. God

  1285. for

  1286. salvation

  1287. to

  1288. everyone

  1289. who

  1290. believes

  1291. so

  1292. we

  1293. have

  1294. a

  1295. message

  1296. that

  1297. we

  1298. ought

  1299. not

  1300. be

  1301. ashamed

  1302. of

  1303. right

  1304. a

  1305. message

  1306. that

  1307. it

  1308. ought

  1309. to

  1310. be

  1311. a

  1312. great

  1313. joy

  1314. for

  1315. us

  1316. to

  1317. share

  1318. with

  1319. others

  1320. to

  1321. call

  1322. to

  1323. others

  1324. to

  1325. repent

  1326. and

  1327. believe

  1328. to

  1329. flee

  1330. from

  1331. the

  1332. wrath

  1333. to

  1334. come

  1335. to

  1336. turn

  1337. from

  1338. your

  1339. sin

  1340. and

  1341. turn

  1342. to

  1343. Christ

  1344. I

  1345. have

  1346. found

  1347. the

  1348. salvation

  1349. of

  1350. my

  1351. soul

  1352. the

  1353. gospel

  1354. is

  1355. the

  1356. power

  1357. of

  1358. God

  1359. to

  1360. save

  1361. me

  1362. and

  1363. I

  1364. want

  1365. joy

  1366. of

  1367. a

  1368. Christian

  1369. ought

  1370. to

  1371. see

  1372. others

  1373. turn

  1374. in

  1375. faith

  1376. to

  1377. Christ

  1378. to

  1379. see

  1380. the

  1381. power

  1382. of

  1383. God

  1384. alive

  1385. and

  1386. active

  1387. in

  1388. their

  1389. lives

  1390. as

  1391. well

  1392. this

  1393. good

  1394. news

  1395. is

  1396. the

  1397. driving

  1398. motivation

  1399. of

  1400. the

  1401. Christian

  1402. life

  1403. it

  1404. is

  1405. the

  1406. theme

  1407. of

  1408. this

  1409. great

  1410. letter

  1411. and

  1412. the

  1413. theme

  1414. of

  1415. Paul's

  1416. life

  1417. it

  1418. was

  1419. the

  1420. theme

  1421. of

  1422. King

  1423. David's

  1424. life

  1425. he

  1426. declares

  1427. in

  1428. Psalm

    Psalms 40:9

  1429. 40

  1430. verse

  1431. 9

  1432. and

  1433. 10

  1434. I

  1435. have

  1436. told

  1437. the

  1438. news

  1439. of

  1440. deliverance

  1441. in

  1442. the

  1443. great

  1444. congregation

  1445. behold

  1446. I

  1447. have

  1448. not

  1449. restrained

  1450. my

  1451. lips

  1452. as

  1453. you

  1454. know

  1455. oh

  1456. Lord

  1457. I

  1458. have

  1459. not

  1460. hidden

  1461. your

  1462. deliverance

  1463. within

  1464. my

  1465. heart

  1466. I

  1467. have

  1468. spoken

  1469. of

  1470. your

  1471. faithfulness

  1472. and

  1473. your

  1474. salvation

  1475. I

  1476. have

  1477. not

  1478. concealed

  1479. your

  1480. steadfast

  1481. love

  1482. and

  1483. your

  1484. faithfulness

  1485. from

  1486. the
