  1. Good morning, I do hope you have a copy of God's Word with you this day, and that you will join me in Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  2. We're doing it, and we're in Romans today.

  3. Now, two weeks ago, we began our study of these six verses, Romans 1, 18-23.

  4. But time prevented us from finishing, so I'm eager to progress through them with you this morning.

  5. I really don't like it when our studies get disjointed like they have been over these past months.

  6. But, I trust and hope that you trust in God's providential reign over even the smallest details of our church's life.

  7. So, here we are. Let's begin by reading our text, and then I'll try to remind you what we have learned so far before we proceed together.

  8. So, Romans chapter 1, verse 18-23.

    Romans 1:18–23

  9. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  10. It was written for His glory and our good.

  11. So, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  12. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,

  13. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  14. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

  15. For His invisible attributes, namely His eternal power and divine nature,

  16. have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world in the things that have been made.

  17. So, they are without excuse.

  18. For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him,

  19. but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  20. Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

  21. and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

  22. So, in verses 16 and 17 of this chapter,

  23. Paul states that the gospel is the power of God for salvation.

  24. For in it, the righteousness of God,

  25. so the righteousness that comes from God,

  26. is revealed from faith for faith.

  27. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  28. These two verses, I have told you repeatedly,

  29. are the thesis for the entirety of this letter.

  30. Paul tells us the specific case that he is going to make,

  31. and then in verse 18,

  32. he zooms back and begins his explanation.

  33. In verse 18, he tells us why anyone would care that the gospel is the power of God.

  34. Why does it matter that it's the power of God for salvation?

  35. He begins telling us why we need the righteousness of God that comes through faith.

  36. And the reason he tells us is,

  37. the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness.

  38. He's going to spend a bunch of time making the case that every single person has been ungodly and unrighteous.

  39. And therefore, apart from the power of God for salvation,

  40. we will experience now and forever the wrath of God.

  41. We thought some together about the wrath of God two weeks ago

  42. from texts like Jeremiah chapter 7 and verse 20,

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  43. where Jeremiah records,

  44. Thus says the Lord God,

  45. Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place upon man and beast,

  46. upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground.

  47. It will burn and not be quenched.

  48. And in the New Testament,

  49. Colossians chapter 3, verse 5 and 6,

    Colossians 3:5

  50. Paul says there,

  51. Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you,

  52. sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness,

  53. which is idolatry.

  54. So he says in verse 5,

  55. Put away the ungodliness and unrighteousness.

  56. And then in verse 6, he says of Colossians 3,

  57. On account of these, the wrath of God is coming.

  58. God's wrath is a settled reality against sin.

  59. He is a just God,

  60. and he justly does and will punish sin.

  61. We thought a bit about how we want this to be true.

  62. We want the world to be set right.

  63. We noted that God's wrath does not discriminate

  64. as it is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

  65. I told you that these two words,

  66. ungodliness and unrighteousness,

  67. are very similar in the Greek language.

  68. They're almost synonyms.

  69. The first stresses a severed relationship with God.

  70. The second focuses on the activity that proceeds

  71. from that severed relationship.

  72. So both who we are in our sin

  73. and then what happens out of who we are.

  74. The one on whom God's wrath is revealed

  75. is not living as an image bearer of God,

  76. but in contradiction to that created purpose.

  77. And in so doing, suppresses the truth.

  78. Lives in contradiction to the truth.

  79. We then considered verse 19,

  80. which says,

  81. for what can be known about God is plain to them

  82. because God has shown it to them.

  83. The four here is referring to the suppression of the truth.

  84. This truth of who God is.

  85. Sinful man denies or rejects the truth

  86. that God has revealed to them.

  87. And this is why, verse 20 says,

  88. they are without excuse.

  89. This is not an issue of what cannot be known,

  90. but rather one of what will not be known.

  91. Truth right there for the taking

  92. that is refused to be taken up and understood.

  93. Verse 20 says,

  94. his invisible attributes,

  95. namely his eternal power and divine nature,

  96. have been clearly perceived

  97. ever since the creation of the world

  98. in the things that have been made.

  99. So two weeks ago,

  100. with a long quotation from a commentary,

  101. we considered the two things

  102. that can be clearly observed in the natural world.

  103. First, that there is a creator God.

  104. And secondly, that he is eternally powerful.

  105. And so, mankind is without excuse.

  106. This suppressed knowledge is enough to damn a person.

  107. But it is not enough to save them.

  108. They are without excuse.

  109. But this is not saving knowledge.

  110. This is why Paul is so eager to preach the gospel.

  111. This is why he wants his original audience

  112. and you and I to understand

  113. that salvation comes by grace alone,

  114. through faith alone,

  115. in the personal work of Jesus Christ alone.

  116. This is why he is not ashamed of the gospel.

  117. For it is the power of God for salvation

  118. to everyone who believes.

  119. To the Jew first,

  120. and also to the Greek.

  121. Right?

  122. It's a gospel that can save.

  123. It's powerful to save.

  124. Because mankind,

  125. in our fallen state,

  126. suppresses the truth.

  127. The gospel is the powerful thing

  128. that's employed by the Spirit

  129. to break through our darkened hearts,

  130. our foolish minds,

  131. and bring us back to God.

  132. It is why he will press at the church

  133. in chapter 10,

  134. where he says,

  135. How then will they call on Him

  136. in whom they have not believed?

  137. And how are they to believe in Him

  138. of whom they have never heard?

  139. And how are they to hear

  140. without someone preaching?

  141. And how are they to preach

  142. unless they are sent,

  143. as it is written,

  144. how beautiful are the feet

  145. of those who preach the good news?

  146. And let me tell you, beloved,

  147. that the preaching he's talking about here

  148. includes what we do

  149. on Sunday mornings from the stage.

  150. It includes that,

  151. but it is not only that,

  152. it is also your gospel proclamation

  153. in the world in which you live

  154. and where you go

  155. as you share the good news.

  156. Now, I think this sufficiently brings us

  157. to the last three verses of this text.

  158. That felt real fast.

  159. But I will read them one more time

  160. to get our minds moving toward

  161. the truth contained therein.

  162. Verse 21 and following.

  163. Four, although they knew God,

  164. they did not honor Him as God

  165. or give thanks to Him,

  166. but they became futile in their thinking

  167. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  168. Claiming to be wise,

  169. they became fools

  170. and exchanged the glory of the immortal God

  171. for images resembling mortal man

  172. and birds and animals

  173. and creeping things.

  174. There is in our text today

  175. a lesson concerning the thinking of mankind,

  176. the thinking faculty of man.

  177. We've seen knowledge, language throughout it.

  178. Look back up in verse 18,

  179. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  180. And verse 19,

  181. for what can be known about God

  182. is plain to them.

  183. And then in verse 20,

  184. having been clearly perceived.

  185. And now, verse 21,

  186. they knew God.

  187. They became futile in their thinking.

  188. And then verse 22,

  189. claiming to be wise,

  190. faculty of the mind,

  191. they became fools.

  192. There's a lot of thinking language

  193. in this text.

  194. Now, remember,

  195. Paul is zooming back

  196. and telling us why we ought to care

  197. that the gospel is the power of God for salvation.

  198. So, don't miss this.

  199. Paul is talking about mankind in this text.

  200. He is speaking in past tense

  201. about a problem that began in the garden.

  202. It is a problem that began with Adam and Eve

  203. rejecting the truth,

  204. acting on a lie,

  205. and learning things that they could not unlearn.

  206. Paul is referring to the state of mankind

  207. ever since,

  208. of which we are numbered apart

  209. from God's intervening grace in our lives.

  210. Paul is teaching that without God's intervention,

  211. the way of man is a digression

  212. away from the truth,

  213. and sound reasoning not toward it.

  214. Now, mankind is not altogether left

  215. without the power to reason.

  216. God in His common grace to mankind

  217. has allowed us, mankind,

  218. to think,

  219. to order our societies,

  220. and discover truth in creation.

  221. And don't we as a people

  222. do this with mixed success?

  223. Sometimes we are improving upon our societies

  224. and discovering amazing things,

  225. and sometimes we move in the opposite direction.

  226. Part of our image-bearing quality as humans

  227. is our ability to reason,

  228. albeit imperfectly.

  229. So we still carry around the ability

  230. to, in some measure,

  231. be image-bearers of God.

  232. Now, the study of how we reason

  233. is called epistemology.

  234. That may be your one big word for the day.

  235. And represented in this room right now

  236. is a mix of epistemological standpoints.

  237. So, we have amongst us,

  238. and probably embedded in all of us,

  239. a little bit of the modernist.

  240. Modernism is where we get,

  241. comes out of the Enlightenment,

  242. where we get things like

  243. the scientific method,

  244. measurable stuff.

  245. We want to be able to have an idea

  246. and test to see if it's true

  247. or if it's not.

  248. This, of course, has some strengths

  249. and it has some weaknesses.

  250. Beyond the modernists,

  251. or the very cleverly called

  252. post-modernists,

  253. most defines my generation.

  254. We think of things,

  255. phrases like,

  256. well, you have your truth

  257. and I have my truth.

  258. This is a post-modern way of thinking.

  259. You can imagine an example for a moment.

  260. Some of us were standing on a sidewalk

  261. and having a conversation

  262. and a car accident happened

  263. just out on the street.

  264. We would all have a different experience

  265. of that car accident.

  266. Some of us may have been facing it

  267. and seen what happened.

  268. Some of us might have been

  269. particularly attuned to the noise

  270. that it made as it wasn't in our sight.

  271. Some might have really smelled the accident,

  272. the screeching of tires,

  273. things like this.

  274. And we'd all have something to share

  275. of our experience.

  276. Yet, objectively,

  277. there was a car accident

  278. and something real happened

  279. in that accident.

  280. The post-modernist tends

  281. to take up that truth

  282. and make it the truth.

  283. What I saw in that car accident

  284. was the thing that absolutely happened

  285. and becomes dismissive

  286. of other experiences.

  287. And now, even more cleverly,

  288. we find ourselves,

  289. and really,

  290. they're going to rename these

  291. at some point, I'm sure,

  292. the epistemological standpoint

  293. of many particularly young people,

  294. but we are not,

  295. as older people,

  296. immune to this,

  297. is called,

  298. ready for it,

  299. post-post-modernism.

  300. It's got to stop at some point.

  301. We can't have post-post-post-modernism,

  302. I don't think.

  303. Many people today

  304. do not believe

  305. that the truth

  306. can be arrived at.

  307. Just pick an issue

  308. and get on the internet.

  309. There's a lot of swirling facts out there.

  310. It's difficult to arrive at the truth.

  311. And because

  312. this is so unsettling,

  313. and really is a result

  314. of post-modernity,

  315. so unsettling,

  316. people who are functioning

  317. in this post-post-modern way

  318. will define the truth

  319. by their feelings.

  320. If it makes me feel good,

  321. it must be good.

  322. If it makes me feel bad,

  323. then it must be bad.

  324. As I said,

  325. we are all a mix

  326. of these epistemological viewpoints.

  327. And we must be careful

  328. because their ultimate end,

  329. although they have some value,

  330. their ultimate end

  331. is a digression

  332. from the saving truth

  333. of the gospel.

  334. Their ultimate end

  335. of any of these ways of thinking

  336. moves away from God

  337. and not toward Him.

  338. We must recognize

  339. that we will not

  340. reason our way

  341. to heaven.

  342. It will not happen.

  343. We need

  344. the revelation of God

  345. to be saved.

  346. We need Him

  347. to speak the truth

  348. to us.

  349. We will not arrive at it

  350. on our own.

  351. We need the intervening grace of God

  352. worked in us

  353. by the power of the Spirit

  354. in the illumination

  355. of His Word.

  356. Now in Romans 12,

  357. beginning of verse 2,

  358. as Paul turns his letter

  359. to practical application,

  360. he says,

  361. Do not be conformed

  362. to this world,

  363. but be transformed

  364. by the renewal

  365. of your mind.

  366. So if we have been saved

  367. by the intervening grace of God,

  368. then we are categorically different

  369. than the description

  370. being given here.

  371. We are not those

  372. who the wrath of God

  373. is being revealed to,

  374. but we are yet

  375. to be fully

  376. sanctified.

  377. We are not arriving.

  378. We don't have

  379. perfect reasoning

  380. yet.

  381. This side of glory,

  382. we still carry around

  383. the baggage

  384. of the curse.

  385. Last Sunday,

  386. I was sick.

  387. I tried to push through.

  388. I actually came to the building

  389. at 8 o'clock.

  390. I could just barely lift my arms.

  391. And so,

  392. I went home.

  393. I still have this body

  394. of death.

  395. I'm still carrying

  396. the burden

  397. of sin.

  398. And it doesn't just affect

  399. my body,

  400. it also affects

  401. my mind.

  402. Which is why

  403. Paul says in Romans 12,

  404. to be transformed

  405. by the renewal

  406. of your mind.

  407. A thing that must be

  408. pursued

  409. to reason

  410. properly

  411. as God

  412. reveals Himself

  413. to us

  414. in His Word.

  415. But what does this

  416. renewing work

  417. look like?

  418. If you look at

  419. verse 21,

  420. the first part of it

  421. says,

  422. for although

  423. they knew God,

  424. they did not honor Him

  425. as God

  426. or give

  427. thanks

  428. to Him.

  429. So,

  430. Paul here states

  431. in the negative

  432. that a renewing mind

  433. will honor God

  434. and will give

  435. thanks

  436. to Him.

  437. The person who has

  438. been saved

  439. by Christ

  440. will

  441. not live the way

  442. these people live,

  443. will give thanks

  444. to Him.

  445. Do you find in yourself

  446. a mind

  447. that is bent

  448. toward

  449. the praise of God

  450. as He has revealed Himself

  451. in the Bible?

  452. Do you thank Him

  453. in all circumstances,

  454. trusting Him

  455. in joy

  456. and in sorrow?

  457. Beloved,

  458. we ought to be

  459. growing in these matters,

  460. these matters of

  461. honor

  462. and

  463. thanksgiving.

  464. It ought to be

  465. an increasing reality

  466. in our lives

  467. if we find ourselves

  468. in Christ.

  469. I think

  470. that the Westminster

  471. Larger Catechism

  472. will help us

  473. at this point.

  474. I certainly

  475. hope that it will.

  476. I always,

  477. with some trepidation,

  478. read long things,

  479. so I hope this will

  480. serve us well

  481. this morning.

  482. Certainly,

  483. we find in our text,

  484. particularly in verse 23,

  485. a breaking of the

  486. Second Commandment.

  487. But I want to draw

  488. our attention this morning

  489. to the First

  490. Commandment.

  491. In the Westminster

  492. Larger Catechism

  493. in the form of

  494. Catechesis,

  495. question 103 says,

  496. what is the First

  497. Commandment?

  498. And the answer is,

  499. the First Commandment is,

  500. Thou shalt have

  501. no other gods

  502. before me.

  503. This is Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  504. chapter 20.

  505. Thou shalt have

  506. no other gods

  507. before me.

  508. So think in these terms

  509. as Paul here is talking

  510. about.

  511. In the negative,

  512. he's saying,

  513. if people are

  514. redeemed by Christ,

  515. we will

  516. honor

  517. God.

  518. And we will

  519. give thanks

  520. to

  521. God.

  522. So the

  523. Westminster

  524. Larger Catechism

  525. follows question

  526. 103 with

  527. question 104,

  528. which says,

  529. what are the duties

  530. required in the

  531. First Commandment?

  532. So just listen to

  533. these carefully

  534. and think,

  535. is this

  536. the

  537. bent?

  538. Is this the way

  539. my heart

  540. tends

  541. toward?

  542. The answer,

  543. the Westminster

  544. Divines wrote,

  545. the duties required

  546. in the First

  547. Commandment are

  548. the knowing

  549. and acknowledging

  550. of God to be

  551. the only true

  552. God and our

  553. God and to

  554. worship and

  555. glorify Him

  556. accordingly by

  557. thinking,

  558. meditating,

  559. remembering,

  560. highly esteeming,

  561. honoring,

  562. adoring,

  563. choosing,

  564. loving,

  565. desiring,

  566. fearing,

  567. believing,

  568. trusting,

  569. hoping,

  570. delighting,

  571. rejoicing in

  572. Him,

  573. being zealous

  574. for Him,

  575. calling upon

  576. Him,

  577. giving all

  578. praise and

  579. thanks,

  580. and yielding

  581. all obedience

  582. and submission

  583. to Him,

  584. with the whole

  585. man,

  586. being careful

  587. in all things

  588. to please Him,

  589. and sorrowful

  590. when in anything

  591. He has offended,

  592. and walking

  593. humbly

  594. with Him.

  595. And I know

  596. that you can't

  597. see it,

  598. but there's a

  599. footnote for

  600. every single

  601. one of those

  602. words where

  603. they have

  604. seen this

  605. in the

  606. Scripture.

  607. These are the

  608. duties required

  609. in the first

  610. commandment,

  611. right?

  612. To have no

  613. other God

  614. before God.

  615. God,

  616. if you do not

  617. find in

  618. yourself a

  619. mind that

  620. is bent

  621. in this

  622. way,

  623. then it is

  624. possible that

  625. you may be

  626. counted among

  627. those who

  628. are futile in

  629. their thinking

  630. and have

  631. foolish,

  632. darkened

  633. hearts.

  637. question 105.

  638. What are the

  639. sins forbidden

  640. in the first

  641. commandment?

  642. The answer,

  643. the sins

  644. forbidden in

  645. the first

  646. commandment

  647. are atheism

  648. in denying

  649. or not having

  650. a God,

  651. idolatry in

  652. having or

  653. worshipping

  654. more gods

  655. than one,

  656. or instead

  657. of the true

  658. God,

  659. the not

  660. having and

  661. vouching Him

  662. for God

  663. and our

  664. God,

  665. the omission

  666. or neglect

  667. of anything

  668. due to Him,

  669. required in

  670. His commandment,

  671. ignorance,

  672. forgetfulness,

  673. misapprehensions,

  674. false opinions,

  675. unworthy and

  676. wicked thoughts

  677. of Him,

  678. bold and

  679. curious searching

  680. into His

  681. secrets,

  682. all profaneness,

  683. hatred of

  684. God,

  685. self-love,

  686. self-seeking,

  687. and all other

  688. inordinate and

  689. immoderate setting

  690. of our mind,

  691. will,

  692. or affections

  693. upon other

  694. things and

  695. taking them

  696. off from Him

  697. in whole or

  698. in part,

  699. vain credulity,

  700. unbelief,

  701. heresy,

  702. misbelief,

  703. distrust,

  704. despair,

  705. incorrigibleness,

  706. and insensibleness

  707. under judgments,

  708. hardness of heart,

  709. pride,

  710. presumption,

  711. carnal security,

  712. tempting of God,

  713. using unlawful means

  714. and trusting in lawful,

  715. sorry,

  716. using of unlawful means

  717. and trusting in lawful means,

  718. carnal delights and joys,

  719. corrupt,

  720. blind,

  721. and indiscreet zeal,

  722. lukewarmness and deadness

  723. in the things of God,

  724. estranging ourselves

  725. and apostatizing from God,

  726. praying or giving any

  727. religious worship

  728. to saints,

  729. angels,

  730. or any other creatures,

  731. all compacts

  732. and consulting with the devil

  733. and hearkening

  734. to his suggestions,

  735. making men the lords

  736. of our faith and conscience,

  737. sliding and despising

  738. God and his commands,

  739. resisting and grieving

  740. of a spirit,

  741. discontent and impatience

  742. at his dispensations,

  743. charging him foolishly

  744. for the evil he inflicts on us,

  745. and ascribing the praise

  746. of any good we either are,

  747. have,

  748. or can do

  749. to fortune,

  750. idols,

  751. ourselves,

  752. or any other creature.

  753. Again,

  754. a scripture reference

  755. for every single one

  756. of those phrases

  757. or words.

  758. Did you know

  759. there was so much

  760. packed into that

  761. first commandment?

  762. You see,

  763. if you find

  764. that you are

  765. a transgressor

  766. of the first commandment,

  767. my plea with you

  768. this day

  769. is that you would repent

  770. of your unrighteousness,

  771. an unrighteousness

  772. that suppresses the truth,

  773. an unrighteousness

  774. on which the wrath

  775. of God

  776. is being revealed,

  777. and that you would

  778. throw yourself

  779. on the mercy

  780. of intervening grace.

  781. The offer

  782. of the gospel

  783. is made

  784. to you

  785. this day.

  786. Having already

  787. found yourself

  788. in Christ,

  789. praise be to God,

  790. we are counted

  791. as righteous

  792. before him,

  793. justified before him,

  794. and now being sanctified,

  795. we get to repent

  796. and believe afresh

  797. again

  798. and again

  799. and again.

  800. The righteous

  801. shall live

  802. by faith.

  803. Renewing our faith,

  804. renewing our faith,

  805. renewing our faith.

  806. Finding yourself

  807. this day

  808. outside the grace

  809. of God?

  810. The gospel

  811. is powerful

  812. to save.

  813. The gospel

  814. can save you

  815. if you would

  816. just believe

  817. that it will.

  818. So we see

  819. this digression

  820. of mankind,

  821. a digression

  822. that we have all

  823. once been

  824. or possibly

  825. are this morning

  826. guilty of.

  827. Verse 22 says,

  828. claiming to be wise,

  829. they became

  830. fools.

  831. God's declaration

  832. in this inspired text

  833. written by Paul

  834. is that the people

  835. who think they're wise

  836. in this world

  837. are fools.

  838. Paul writes

  839. in 1 Corinthians 1

  840. and verse 18,

  841. for the word

  842. of the cross

  843. is folly

  844. to those

  845. who are perishing.

  846. But to us

  847. who are being saved,

  848. it is the power

  849. of God.

  850. And in Philippians 3,

    Philippians 3:18

  851. verse 18

  852. and following,

  853. for many of whom

  854. I have often told you

  855. and now tell you

  856. even with tears

  857. walk as enemies

  858. of the cross

  859. of Christ.

  860. Their end

  861. is destruction,

  862. their God

  863. is their belly,

  864. and they glory

  865. in their shame

  866. with minds

  867. set on earthly things.

  868. But our citizenship

  869. is in heaven

  870. and from it

  871. we await

  872. a Savior,

  873. the Lord

  874. Jesus Christ.

  875. Claiming to be wise,

  876. right,

  877. glorying in their

  878. shame,

  879. they become fools.

  880. words.

  881. In this past week,

  882. I feel like I was

  883. just bombarded

  884. with the foolishness

  885. of the world

  886. trying to be

  887. framed as

  888. wisdom.

  889. we do a program

  890. on Fridays

  891. with some boys

  892. from our church

  893. and in partnership

  894. with Grace Community Church.

  895. We call it

  896. Corum Deo,

  897. which is Latin for

  898. before the face of God.

  899. And we've got

  900. 10 11-13 year olds

  901. and when we begin

  902. the morning

  903. we ask if they have

  904. any prayer requests.

  905. And I will tell you

  906. that young boys

  907. ask for prayer

  908. the way many

  909. old men do

  910. because they have

  911. twisted ankles

  912. and people they know

  913. who are sick.

  914. And I often try

  915. to add

  916. something

  917. of

  918. more eternal

  919. substance

  920. to

  921. our praying.

  922. And this past Friday

  923. I just couldn't

  924. open my mouth

  925. because everything

  926. that was going to

  927. come out of it

  928. was going to be

  929. terribly depressing

  930. to 11-13 year olds.

  931. And so as we prayed

  932. with them

  933. and for them

  934. for toes

  935. and ankles

  936. and parents

  937. with sniffles

  938. I said

  939. come Lord Jesus

  940. this world

  941. is just

  942. falling apart.

  943. And Paul here

  944. is not teaching us

  945. that there's this

  946. progression

  947. that we're experiencing

  948. that progression

  949. but that it has

  950. been this way

  951. since

  952. the fall.

  953. Adam and Eve

  954. in the garden

  955. verse 22

  956. claiming to be wise

  957. they acted

  958. and they became

  959. fools

  960. and all of

  961. mankind

  962. ever since.

  963. Verse 23

  964. says

  965. and exchange

  966. the glory

  967. of the

  968. immortal God

  969. for

  970. images

  971. resembling

  972. mortal man

  973. and birds

  974. and animals

  975. and creeping

  976. things.

  977. Turned from

  978. the praise of God

  979. to idolatry.

  980. and we will

  981. talk at length

  982. about this

  983. in the text

  984. that will conclude

  985. chapter 1

  986. Lord willing

  987. next week.

  988. Beloved

  989. we ought not

  990. to be surprised

  991. when the world

  992. rejects the ways

  993. of our God.

  994. I see so many

  995. Christians

  996. so shocked

  997. when the world

  998. acts in contradiction

  999. to our God.

  1000. This text

  1001. makes it clear

  1002. why they do.

  1003. Their ungodliness

  1004. and unrighteousness

  1005. suppress the truth.

  1006. It is the natural

  1007. way of the

  1008. fallen man

  1009. to bend

  1010. away from

  1011. God

  1012. and his ways.

  1013. Now it is

  1014. good for us

  1015. to reason

  1016. in the marketplace

  1017. so don't

  1018. hear me

  1019. asking you

  1020. to disengage

  1021. from the world

  1022. in which we live.

  1023. By all

  1024. means

  1025. reason

  1026. with people.

  1027. By common

  1028. grace

  1029. the world

  1030. has reasoning

  1031. faculty.

  1032. We want to

  1033. labor for

  1034. an equitable

  1035. society.

  1036. But

  1037. what this

  1038. world needs

  1039. most

  1040. is the

  1041. intervening

  1042. grace of

  1043. God

  1044. found in

  1045. the powerful

  1046. gospel

  1047. of Jesus

  1048. Christ.

  1049. Paul doesn't

  1050. go on his

  1051. missionary journeys

  1052. into cities

  1053. and have

  1054. political

  1055. dialogue

  1056. with people

  1057. in that city.

  1058. What does he

  1059. do?

  1060. He goes to

  1061. the synagogue

  1062. a place

  1063. where people

  1064. would have

  1065. come for

  1066. the worship

  1067. of God

  1068. and he

  1069. reasons

  1070. with them

  1071. from the

  1072. scripture

  1073. that Jesus

  1074. is the

  1075. Christ.

  1076. This should

  1077. be the

  1078. primary

  1079. thrust

  1080. of what

  1081. we do.

  1082. Knowing

  1083. that

  1084. we cannot

  1085. reason

  1086. people

  1087. politically

  1088. into heaven.

  1089. It's not

  1090. going to

  1091. happen.

  1092. God is

  1093. going to

  1094. make this

  1095. world new

  1096. one day

  1097. and we

  1098. as the

  1099. church

  1100. are meant

  1101. to be

  1102. about

  1103. making

  1104. disciples

  1105. of the

  1106. Lord

  1107. Jesus

  1108. Christ.

  1109. It ought

  1110. to be

  1111. the

  1112. central

  1113. thing

  1114. that

  1115. we

  1116. do

  1117. in

  1118. everything

  1119. that

  1120. we

  1121. do.

  1122. So I

  1123. pray that

  1124. as the

  1125. world

  1126. assails

  1127. us

  1128. with its

  1129. warped

  1130. thinking

  1131. we will

  1132. respond

  1133. with the

  1134. truth

  1135. that we

  1136. were once

  1137. like

  1138. them.

  1139. That we

  1140. have been

  1141. saved by

  1142. a loving

  1143. kind

  1144. God

  1145. and that

  1146. we will

  1147. extend

  1148. the

  1149. saving

  1150. offer

  1151. of the

  1152. gospel

  1153. to them.

  1154. And I

  1155. pray that

  1156. we would

  1157. not just

  1158. be

  1159. theological

  1160. heads

  1161. but

  1162. transformed

  1163. people.

  1164. So in

  1165. closing let

  1166. me just

  1167. read the

  1168. entirety of

  1169. Romans 12

  1170. 2 for

  1171. our benefit.

  1172. Do not

  1173. be conformed

  1174. to this

  1175. world but

  1176. be transformed

  1177. by the

  1178. renewal of

  1179. your mind

  1180. that by

  1181. testing you

  1182. may discern

  1183. what is the

  1184. will of

  1185. God what

  1186. is good

  1187. and acceptable

  1188. and perfect.

  1189. Let's pray

  1190. together.

  1191. Let's pray

  1192. together.

  1193. here.
