  1. We have a lot to go through today.

  2. I'm going to really try and move fast.

  3. But if you get to the 30-minute mark and you really got to go to the bathroom,

  4. or your child really needs something, I'm not going to be offended.

  5. But we need to, as the old King James language says,

  6. gird up the loins of our minds this morning for all that we need to go through.

  7. But just join me in a quick word of prayer.

  8. Father, we offer up this time to you.

  9. You would be pleased.

  10. Help us to focus.

  11. Help us to listen to your word.

  12. It would take deep root in our hearts and have your desired effect upon our lives.

  13. Work in and through us during this time.

  14. Use me, a broken man, a broken vessel, to accomplish this in Christ's name.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. So we've been, we started last week walking through the monumental chapter,

  18. Mount Everest chapter of Isaiah 40.

  19. So I encourage you to go back and listen to the message from last week

  20. because it lays sort of the historical background, historical context for everything going on,

  21. to which you may be a little lost.

  22. But I'll try to summarize in a couple minutes because that's all we have, maybe one minute.

  23. But the first part of Isaiah from chapter 7 to 39 is mostly pictures and pronouncements of divine judgment

  24. against the people of Israel and then later on Judah.

  25. And so a very grim, hard words to God's people.

  26. He had been patient with them.

  27. He had sent them prophets.

  28. He had done all kinds of things to show them, like his love and his forbearance.

  29. But now that time had passed and he said, judgment is going to come.

  30. And eventually the northern kingdom comprised of 10 different tribes were destroyed by Assyria.

  31. And then 100 and I think 35 years later, Judah and Jerusalem were eventually destroyed by the new superpower, Babylon.

  32. And so Isaiah lived though during the time of Assyria.

  33. And when he gets to chapter 39, it ends with King Hezekiah.

  34. And so, but if we jump into chapter 40, in the blink of an eye, Isaiah is sort of transported into the future.

  35. So he's speaking to God's people in the context of their future exile in Babylon.

  36. It's one of the cool things that Bible prophets do, what God does through them.

  37. So he knows that they're in the future going to be in Babylon, in exile, even though they currently are not while he's saying these things.

  38. He knows that it will happen.

  39. And so God speaks through him a word of comfort and assurance and certainty in their future exile,

  40. kind of projected by the Holy Spirit into the future, much like John was in Revelation.

  41. But he knows the questions that they're going to be asking while they're in exile.

  42. Has God failed? Has his promises failed?

  43. Does God even want to deliver us?

  44. And if he wants to, can he deliver us?

  45. And if all those things are true, will he actually do it?

  46. Will he actually make the decision to do it?

  47. Especially since they don't deserve it, just much like we don't deserve the grace of God.

  48. And so in their darkest moments, this call of prophecy goes out into the future to speak a word of comfort.

  49. So we broke up this chapter into three sections.

  50. Last week, we just did one of them.

  51. And that was the glory of God is the comfort of his people.

  52. That's what we talked about up until this week.

  53. So this week, I'll summarize really quickly what we covered last week.

  54. But some of the images of Christ that we see in the first part of this is the comfort to Jerusalem prefigures the comfort that is found in Christ Jesus.

  55. And that's verse three.

  56. And then later on, John the Baptist uses those words to announce the coming of the Lord in person.

  57. Verse five, we see that the glory of the Lord is revealed through Jesus Christ.

  58. Right?

  59. Then later on in verse five, that the fading of human lives is contrasted with the eternal salvation in Christ.

  60. And then verse eight, which is getting close to where we ended.

  61. Jesus is the incarnate tendered shepherd who carries his helpless people.

  62. Okay, so just a few connections to last week.

  63. But today, we're going to do part one and part two or part three.

  64. So let's just dive into it.

  65. And just, excuse me, just for time's sake, we're just going to walk through this Bible study style.

  66. I'm going to break the preaching rule and not read it all because it'll take four or five minutes for me to read it all.

  67. So we're just going to walk by it and eat it kind of piecemeal.

  68. But part two is the uniqueness of God is the assurance of his people.

  69. The uniqueness of God is the assurance of his people.

  70. And so we'll start in verse 12.

  71. All right?

  72. We see God transitioning to a focus on his sovereign power and executive rule as the creator of all things.

  73. Last week, we saw the attractiveness and tenderness of the shepherd and the promise of comfort.

  74. And today, we see God's irresistible power to make what he said come to pass.

  75. Therefore, it's impossible for such a great God to forget his people or neglect his people.

  76. So I hope we're going to break this up into a few different pieces under this.

  77. But number one, verses 12 through 14, it says,

  78. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span,

  79. enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in its scales, and the hills in a balance?

  80. Number one, God is the ever-wise creator.

  81. That's what we see here in verses 12 through 14.

  82. God is the ever-wise creator.

  83. So it always helps to magnify the Lord by thinking about what was going on before creation.

  84. But God existed eternal and immutable.

  85. He needed nothing.

  86. He was independent.

  87. He didn't choose to create the world or us or anything else because he was lonely and needed company,

  88. or he just, you know, wanted to pick up a hobby.

  89. He wasn't needy or dependent on anything.

  90. When Paul was in Athens, Greece, he said,

  91. The God who made the world and everything in it, being the Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands,

  92. nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything.

  93. So the next time you have a weak view of God, just have that in mind that he needs nothing.

  94. He's not served by us.

  95. Since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

  96. That's Acts 17, 24 through 25.

  97. So, Yahweh, the living God, gloriously and freely reigned before anything else in creation.

  98. Perfectly satisfied and happy in himself.

  99. Something that we don't understand.

  100. Therefore, he chose not to create because he lacked something,

  101. because it was an expression or an overflow of his greatness.

  102. Revelation 4, 11.

  103. Worthy are you, our Lord and our God,

  104. to receive glory and honor and power,

  105. because you created all things,

  106. and by your will they existed and were created.

  107. So, God is the Creator.

  108. He's holding all creation.

  109. So, if you look at verse 10 of chapter 40,

  110. the translation really is sovereign Lord.

  111. So, he asked a series of rhetorical questions

  112. to demonstrate how God is the sovereign Lord.

  113. He established creation and he is uniquely powerful and wise.

  114. His omnipotence, his wisdom,

  115. he spoke all things into being before there was anything made at all.

  116. Psalm 33, verse 6,

    Psalms 33:6

  117. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,

  118. and by his breath, the breath of his mouth, their host.

  119. God is all-powerful, therefore his word is all-powerful.

  120. Our word doesn't really accomplish a whole lot,

  121. but his, as you can read in later chapters,

  122. I think chapter 55,

  123. talks about how his word does not return to him void.

  124. It accomplishes all he desires.

  125. And so, we see a proclamation here.

  126. He looks at creation, different parts of creation.

  127. The waters of the world.

  128. You see this?

  129. He says,

  130. The oceans, the seas, the lakes, the rivers are held

  131. like a tiny drop,

  132. a tiny pool

  133. in the hand

  134. of Yahweh.

  135. Crazy.

  136. The heavens are marked off.

  137. I love this.

  138. The Hebrew means to adjust.

  139. To adjust a thing to its proper place

  140. or function.

  141. And it means,

  142. you see the word span that's used there.

  143. He marks off the heavens with a span.

  144. So, the outstretched thumb

  145. and the pinky.

  146. So, it's like God's going,

  147. that's like what he's doing

  148. with the universe

  149. or with the heavens.

  150. And he positions them there.

  151. He said,

  152. You will go here

  153. and this will be your function.

  154. And we know how well

  155. finely tuned the universe is

  156. and how finely tuned earth is

  157. and one little change

  158. there would be no life here.

  159. Perfect.

  160. He measured it out

  161. by his outstretched thumb

  162. and pinky.

  163. The span.

  164. He is so supreme

  165. that he positioned the heavens

  166. and the earth

  167. saying,

  168. This will go here.

  169. An old Puritan said,

  170. Remember,

  171. a long time ago,

  172. Can we,

  173. when we behold

  174. the starry theater

  175. of heaven and earth,

  176. conclude other?

  177. But that finger

  178. and arms

  179. and wisdom of God

  180. has been there.

  181. God is so vast

  182. that he holds

  183. all the dust

  184. of the earth

  185. in a small basket

  186. or pen pot.

  187. Now this is cool.

  188. This astounds me.

  189. It says he holds

  190. the dust in a measure.

  191. You see that?

  192. The phrase,

  193. in a measure?

  194. It means a third.

  195. Anybody know

  196. how much

  197. land makes up

  198. on the earth?

  199. Maybe 30%.

  200. So a third.

  201. He holds the dust

  202. of the earth

  203. on a scale.

  204. That's where water

  205. covers about 70%.

  206. The dust makes up

  207. 30.

  208. A third.

  209. In a measure

  210. is what in a measure

  211. means.

  212. A third.

  213. Pretty crazy.

  214. I double checked

  215. on that one.

  216. I kind of found that

  217. on my own,

  218. which I was kind of like,

  219. Wow, that's really neat.

  220. Then,

  221. it makes mentions

  222. of the mountains

  223. and the hills

  224. of the earth

  225. saying,

  226. God is so mighty

  227. and powerful

  228. that he can pick them up

  229. and move them

  230. with no problem.

  231. With ease.

  232. With no problem.

  233. He can put them

  234. on a pair of scales

  235. and weigh them

  236. in the balance.

  237. So he takes

  238. all of creation

  239. at a glance

  240. and says,

  241. Who else but the Almighty

  242. could weigh these things

  243. and measure them,

  244. determine its boundaries

  245. with perfect precision?

  246. So,

  247. the point is,

  248. any of this

  249. is too big for us.

  250. This is stuff

  251. that we can't conceive,

  252. something that we have

  253. no ability

  254. to do or comprehend.

  255. It's just an overwhelming,

  256. overpowering thought.

  257. And it's meant to be

  258. because it's meant

  259. to make us small

  260. and God enormous.

  261. So,

  262. if God can do this,

  263. He alone

  264. is worthy

  265. of His people's trust

  266. and love.

  267. Go to verse 13.

  268. It says,

  269. Who has measured

  270. the Spirit of the Lord?

  271. Or what man

  272. shows Him counsel?

  273. Whom did He

  274. consult

  275. and who made

  276. Him understand?

  277. Who taught Him

  278. the path of justice

  279. and taught Him

  280. knowledge

  281. and showed Him

  282. the way of understanding?

  283. So,

  284. to ask some

  285. very intensely

  286. humble questions.

  287. So,

  288. just as Yahweh

  289. can easily measure

  290. with perfect precision

  291. all creation,

  292. all created things,

  293. can any created thing

  294. do that?

  295. Can any created thing

  296. do what He

  297. just talked about?

  298. The answer is no.

  299. Can anyone

  300. fathom or comprehend

  301. the mind of God

  302. that created

  303. all these things?

  304. No.

  305. What puny mortal

  306. like me

  307. or you

  308. would dare

  309. look at the face

  310. of God

  311. and try to give Him

  312. counsel

  313. or teach Him

  314. what's right

  315. or wrong?

  316. That's what it says.

  317. right out of

  318. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 32 chapter mention

  319. chapter 32.

  320. It says,

  321. the rock

  322. about God.

  323. His work is perfect

  324. for all His ways

  325. are justice,

  326. a God of faithfulness

  327. and without iniquity.

  328. Just

  329. and upright

  330. is He.

  331. God's knowledge

  332. is perfect.

  333. 1 John 3.20

  334. He knows

  335. all things.

  336. Psalm 147

    Psalms 147:7

  337. verse 7.

  338. Great is the Lord

  339. and abundant in power.

  340. His understanding

  341. is beyond

  342. measure.

  343. So all this

  344. is meant

  345. to humble us,

  346. meant to dwarf us

  347. and make us feel

  348. small and insignificant.

  349. Sin makes you

  350. want to feel

  351. significant.

  352. Sin makes you

  353. want to feel

  354. big and powerful.

  355. Puts us in the wrong

  356. position

  357. before God.

  358. So God is saying,

  359. is it you?

  360. Would you

  361. dare

  362. compare yourself

  363. to me

  364. or would any

  365. man at all

  366. compare himself

  367. to me?

  368. So what

  369. a great God.

  370. Paul

  371. in Romans

  372. actually

  373. cites this,

  374. quotes this,

  375. providential plan

  376. of salvation,

  377. of surety

  378. for redemption

  379. for the Jews

  380. and the Gentiles.

  381. And he

  382. cites this

  383. and he breaks

  384. side

  385. and prays.

  386. And he says

  387. in Romans 11

    Romans 11:33

  388. verse 33,

  389. Oh the depth

  390. and riches,

  391. wisdom and

  392. knowledge of God.

  393. How unsearchable

  394. are his judgments

  395. and how inscrutable

  396. his ways.

  397. For who has

  398. known the mind

  399. of the Lord?

  400. Right?

  401. 700 years later

  402. he's quoting this.

  403. For who has

  404. known the mind

  405. of the Lord

  406. or who has

  407. been his

  408. counselor?

  409. Or who has

  410. given him a

  411. gift that he

  412. might be repaid?

  413. For from him,

  414. through him,

  415. and to him

  416. are all things.

  417. To him be glory

  418. forever.

  419. Amen.

  420. So that's

  421. number one

  422. under this

  423. first title.

  424. Number two,

  425. God is the

  426. immense Lord

  427. of the nations.

  428. The immense

  429. Lord of the

  430. nations.

  431. You see this

  432. in verse 16.

  433. Behold,

  434. the nations

  435. are like a

  436. drop from a

  437. bucket and

  438. are counted

  439. as the dust

  440. on the scales.

  441. Behold,

  442. he takes up

  443. coastlands

  444. like fine

  445. dust.

  446. Lebanon

  447. would not

  448. suffice for

  449. fuel,

  450. nor are its

  451. beasts enough

  452. for burnt

  453. offering.

  454. The nations

  455. are as

  456. nothing

  457. before him.

  458. They are

  459. accounted by

  460. him as

  461. less than

  462. nothing

  463. and emptiness.

  464. So,

  465. to further

  466. magnify the

  467. uniqueness of

  468. God,

  469. Isaiah says

  470. that the

  471. nations are

  472. like a

  473. drop from

  474. a bucket

  475. before him.

  476. A very

  477. humble

  478. imagery.

  479. How many

  480. of you ever

  481. carried a

  482. big bucket

  483. of water

  484. in your

  485. yard to

  486. do something?

  487. Wash a

  488. car,

  489. water a

  490. plant,

  491. and you

  492. accidentally

  493. bump something

  494. and one

  495. little drop

  496. goes flying

  497. out?

  498. That's

  499. like what

  500. the nations

  501. are like

  502. to God.

  503. You wouldn't

  504. like go back

  505. and refill

  506. the bucket.

  507. You would

  508. just say,

  509. just a

  510. drop,

  511. doesn't

  512. matter.

  513. And that's

  514. what the

  515. nations are

  516. before God.

  517. And that's

  518. not to say

  519. he hates

  520. the nations

  521. or despises

  522. them.

  523. It's just

  524. saying in

  525. comparison,

  526. they are

  527. nothing.

  528. They are

  529. little.

  530. They are

  531. insignificant

  532. compared to

  533. God.

  534. God does

  535. love the

  536. nations.

  537. He sent

  538. them a

  539. savior.

  540. He desires

  541. praise from

  542. the nations.

  543. But they

  544. rage against

  545. him.

  546. They rebel

  547. against him,

  548. much in the way

  549. our own nation

  550. is in many

  551. ways.

  552. But the

  553. whole point

  554. is this is

  555. not a

  556. vexing

  557. problem to

  558. God.

  559. He's not

  560. concerned.

  561. He's not

  562. threatened by

  563. any nation

  564. whatsoever.

  565. Or the sum

  566. total of

  567. them.

  568. He is not

  569. threatened.

  570. He has no

  571. issue, but he

  572. governs them as

  573. he chooses.

  574. Right?

  575. They present

  576. no threat.

  577. But to us,

  578. they seem

  579. big.

  580. They seem

  581. insurmountable.

  582. But to

  583. Israel, the

  584. nations around

  585. them seemed

  586. overwhelming.

  587. But they're

  588. not.

  589. And the

  590. same is

  591. true for

  592. us.

  593. Then he

  594. mentions

  595. Lebanon

  596. here in

  597. verse 16.

  598. Without further

  599. ado, really

  600. quickly, Lebanon

  601. just had these

  602. big cedar

  603. forests and a

  604. lot of animal

  605. life.

  606. And basically

  607. saying, like,

  608. you know, wood

  609. is used to

  610. build the fire

  611. to have a

  612. burnt offering.

  613. So you have

  614. all the wood

  615. of Lebanon

  616. laid down.

  617. And then on

  618. top of that,

  619. put down all

  620. the animals

  621. that are

  622. there for

  623. a sacrifice.

  624. He would

  625. say, not

  626. enough.

  627. Like, even a

  628. burnt offering

  629. that big would

  630. ultimately fall

  631. short of what

  632. God truly

  633. deserves.

  634. But the

  635. best of human

  636. worship will

  637. always fall

  638. short.

  639. God only

  640. accepted fully

  641. and was

  642. pleased with

  643. one sacrifice.

  644. That's 2,000

  645. years ago on

  646. the cross.

  647. Number

  648. three.

  649. Very simple.

  650. God alone

  651. is God.

  652. God alone

  653. is God.

  654. Verse 18.

  655. To whom

  656. will you liken

  657. God?

  658. Or what

  659. likeness

  660. compare with

  661. Him?

  662. An idol?

  663. A craftsman

  664. casts it.

  665. A goldsmith

  666. overlays it

  667. with gold

  668. and casts

  669. it for silver

  670. chains.

  671. He who is

  672. too impoverished

  673. for an offering

  674. chooses wood

  675. that it will

  676. not rot.

  677. He seeks

  678. out a

  679. skillful

  680. craftsman

  681. to set

  682. up the

  683. idol

  684. that it

  685. will not

  686. move.

  687. And so

  688. God offers

  689. a challenge

  690. here.

  691. Verse 18.

  692. I dare

  693. you to

  694. find anything

  695. else in

  696. all creation

  697. to compare

  698. with me.

  699. Simply put,

  700. God alone

  701. is God.

  702. And so

  703. this is

  704. sarcasm

  705. on God's

  706. part.

  707. Look at

  708. these idols

  709. made of

  710. silver,

  711. gold,

  712. or wood.

  713. Right?

  714. And they have

  715. to be propped

  716. up because

  717. they'll fall

  718. over.

  719. And like,

  720. you're going

  721. to give

  722. your worship

  723. to these

  724. things?

  725. Compared

  726. to the

  727. ancient of

  728. days?

  729. Before we

  730. like laugh

  731. at ancient

  732. culture,

  733. we do it

  734. all the time.

  735. What idols

  736. do you have

  737. in your life?

  738. What do you

  739. look to for

  740. comfort,

  741. for meaning,

  742. for protection,

  743. and assurance?

  744. I went

  745. to a Hindu

  746. temple a long

  747. time ago

  748. and there

  749. was all

  750. these little

  751. gods inside

  752. the room.

  753. And,

  754. you know,

  755. they're just

  756. statues.

  757. But people

  758. were going

  759. up to them

  760. and putting

  761. food in

  762. their hands

  763. to feed

  764. them.

  765. And you

  766. would look

  767. at that

  768. and just

  769. think,

  770. that's nuts.

  771. That thing

  772. is not going

  773. to eat that

  774. stuff.

  775. But we do

  776. that every

  777. week.

  778. we feed

  779. our little

  780. idols to

  781. give us

  782. comfort,

  783. meaning,

  784. and assurance.

  785. We go up

  786. to them

  787. and keep

  788. them going.

  789. And they

  790. fall over.

  791. They'll

  792. fall over.

  793. Right?

  794. So God

  795. is saying,

  796. will you

  797. dare compare

  798. me to

  799. such as

  800. that?

  801. I am the

  802. immortal

  803. God.

  804. Number

  805. four,

  806. God is

  807. the active

  808. Lord.

  809. Verse

  810. 21,

  811. He says,

  812. do you

  813. not know

  814. do you

  815. not hear?

  816. Has it

  817. not been

  818. told you

  819. from the

  820. beginning?

  821. Have you

  822. not understood

  823. from the

  824. foundations

  825. of the

  826. earth?

  827. It is

  828. He who

  829. sits above

  830. the circle

  831. of the

  832. earth,

  833. and its

  834. inhabitants

  835. are like

  836. grasshoppers,

  837. who stretches

  838. out the

  839. heavens like

  840. a curtain,

  841. and spreads

  842. them like a

  843. tent to

  844. dwell in,

  845. who brings

  846. princes to

  847. nothing,

  848. and makes

  849. the rulers

  850. of the

  851. earth as

  852. emptiness.

  853. Scarcely

  854. are they

  855. planted,

  856. scarcely

  857. are they

  858. sown.

  859. Scarcely

  860. has their

  861. stem taken

  862. root in

  863. the earth.

  864. When He

  865. blows on

  866. them,

  867. they

  868. wither,

  869. and the

  870. tempest

  871. carries

  872. them off

  873. like

  874. stubble.

  875. So,

  876. here,

  877. He says,

  878. if a person

  879. has not

  880. heard,

  881. they should

  882. have heard.

  883. Isn't that

  884. interesting?

  885. Like,

  886. because of

  887. His resounding

  888. glory throughout

  889. the earth,

  890. He says,

  891. if you

  892. haven't heard,

  893. you should

  894. have heard.

  895. He sits

  896. transcendent,

  897. enthroned above

  898. the circle of

  899. the earth.

  900. There's one of

  901. those scientific

  902. things.

  903. A lot of

  904. people think

  905. the earth was

  906. flat for

  907. centuries,

  908. but it

  909. actually says

  910. here,

  911. God's

  912. knowledge of

  913. what He

  914. made,

  915. the earth,

  916. is a

  917. sphere,

  918. a circle,

  919. right?

  920. Actually,

  921. it says that

  922. in Job 22,

    Job 22:14

  923. verse 14,

  924. as well.

  925. And He

  926. looks at all

  927. the people

  928. on it as

  929. small,

  930. insignificant,

  931. like grasshoppers,

  932. using the

  933. language of the

  934. day,

  935. like nothing.

  936. Such greatness

  937. is incomparable.

  938. And He pitches

  939. out the heavens,

  940. the universe,

  941. like a tent,

  942. and stretches

  943. them out for

  944. a place to

  945. dwell in.

  946. And it also

  947. says in

  948. Revelation that

  949. He'll roll up

  950. that same tent,

  951. like start over,

  952. cleanse,

  953. new,

  954. right?

  955. This one

  956. particularly is a

  957. great comfort to

  958. anybody who's

  959. aware of what's

  960. going on in our

  961. country or the

  962. world,

  963. but He rules

  964. effortlessly,

  965. over all

  966. world leaders,

  967. good or bad,

  968. Christian or

  969. non-Christian,

  970. fools and

  971. wise,

  972. powerful and

  973. weak,

  974. He rules over

  975. them all.

  976. There's much

  977. trouble in our

  978. world today of

  979. nations plotting

  980. war and rumors

  981. of war,

  982. world leaders

  983. seeking their

  984. own advancement,

  985. power,

  986. control,

  987. riches,

  988. even at the

  989. expense of their

  990. own people,

  991. east being set

  992. against west

  993. once again.

  994. It can cause a

  995. great deal of

  996. anxiety if you

  997. watch the news

  998. too much,

  999. but just be

  1000. aware.

  1001. But it says

  1002. here that

  1003. Yahweh brings

  1004. the princes,

  1005. which actually

  1006. means just

  1007. people of

  1008. importance,

  1009. people of

  1010. importance,

  1011. to nothing,

  1012. and makes the

  1013. rulers of the

  1014. earth as

  1015. emptiness.

  1016. That word

  1017. means meaningless.

  1018. It actually

  1019. implies He

  1020. makes them of

  1021. no further

  1022. significance.

  1023. The glory that

  1024. they thought they

  1025. had is gone,

  1026. and they're

  1027. forgotten.

  1028. All He has

  1029. to do is

  1030. just blow on

  1031. them.

  1032. He gets

  1033. back to that

  1034. imagery of

  1035. they are like

  1036. grass.

  1037. They're planted,

  1038. they're sown,

  1039. they grow,

  1040. the Lord blows,

  1041. and they're

  1042. gone.

  1043. That's like how

  1044. it is.

  1045. Some of you

  1046. have lived

  1047. longer than

  1048. the rest of

  1049. us, or

  1050. people who

  1051. just know

  1052. history,

  1053. some of the

  1054. greatest leaders

  1055. in the world,

  1056. you know where

  1057. they all are

  1058. now?

  1059. Gone.

  1060. And in a

  1061. time they

  1062. will be

  1063. forgotten,

  1064. and such as

  1065. it is with

  1066. anyone else

  1067. today, all

  1068. God has to

  1069. do is just

  1070. blow on

  1071. them.

  1072. Minimal

  1073. effort.

  1074. Daniel said

  1075. of God,

  1076. it is He who

  1077. changes times

  1078. and seasons.

  1079. He disposes

  1080. kings and

  1081. raises up

  1082. others.

  1083. So God

  1084. controls, you

  1085. see in our

  1086. text, He

  1087. controls the

  1088. tempest and

  1089. carries them

  1090. off.

  1091. Right?

  1092. So trust

  1093. Him completely.

  1094. This is not

  1095. meant to

  1096. scare, it's

  1097. meant to

  1098. say, that's

  1099. our God, our

  1100. God does

  1101. that.

  1102. So take

  1103. hope, right?

  1104. Trust Him

  1105. completely.

  1106. And then

  1107. five, number

  1108. five under

  1109. this first

  1110. part, God

  1111. is the

  1112. watchful

  1113. creator.

  1114. Verse 25,

  1115. He issues

  1116. that challenge

  1117. again, to

  1118. whom will

  1119. you compare

  1120. me that I

  1121. should be

  1122. like Him,

  1123. says the

  1124. Holy One.

  1125. Lift up

  1126. your eyes

  1127. on high and

  1128. see who

  1129. created

  1130. these, who

  1131. brings out

  1132. their hosts

  1133. by number,

  1134. calling them

  1135. all by

  1136. name, by

  1137. the greatness

  1138. of His

  1139. might, and

  1140. because He

  1141. is strong

  1142. in power, not

  1143. one of them

  1144. is missing.

  1145. So He

  1146. offers that

  1147. challenge again.

  1148. So you see

  1149. the title,

  1150. the Holy

  1151. One.

  1152. Isaiah

  1153. uses that

  1154. title a lot

  1155. for God.

  1156. And if you

  1157. read chapter

  1158. 7, you'll

  1159. know why he

  1160. uses that

  1161. title for

  1162. God.

  1163. When he

  1164. was called

  1165. by God,

  1166. and he

  1167. heard the

  1168. seraphine

  1169. crying,

  1170. holy, holy,

  1171. holy is the

  1172. Lord of

  1173. hosts.

  1174. So, holy

  1175. is a very

  1176. profound word,

  1177. but just for

  1178. our sake, it

  1179. means that God

  1180. is in a

  1181. category of

  1182. His own.

  1183. He is

  1184. unique, He

  1185. is separated

  1186. from all

  1187. His created

  1188. things,

  1189. undefiled,

  1190. perfect,

  1191. and pure.

  1192. So, He

  1193. calls us to

  1194. go out on a

  1195. clear night,

  1196. which you can

  1197. do up here

  1198. in the mountains,

  1199. and look at

  1200. the stars,

  1201. look overhead,

  1202. look and

  1203. behold what

  1204. I have made,

  1205. is what God

  1206. is saying.

  1207. Many of the

  1208. pagan religions

  1209. of the ancient

  1210. Near East

  1211. people,

  1212. they had

  1213. astrological

  1214. phenomena that

  1215. they looked

  1216. to, and

  1217. they foolishly

  1218. worshipped the

  1219. creation rather

  1220. than the

  1221. Creator,

  1222. because God

  1223. is the one

  1224. who controls

  1225. the stars.

  1226. The starry

  1227. constellations,

  1228. they believed,

  1229. were controlled

  1230. by God.

  1231. Thus, only

  1232. God is

  1233. worthy of

  1234. worship.

  1235. He controls

  1236. the things

  1237. that the

  1238. pagans are

  1239. worshipping,

  1240. which sounds

  1241. foolish, and

  1242. it is.

  1243. Read Romans

  1244. 1 and 2.

  1245. He says,

  1246. not one of

  1247. them is

  1248. missing, so

  1249. God creates

  1250. and sustains

  1251. the stars.

  1252. All inspiring.

  1253. I'll spare you

  1254. all the science

  1255. behind that.

  1256. Just go check

  1257. it out.

  1258. All kind of

  1259. stuff.

  1260. The galaxies,

  1261. the stars,

  1262. the Milky

  1263. Wave,

  1264. etc.

  1265. But whoever

  1266. he goes on,

  1267. he says he

  1268. doesn't just

  1269. create them,

  1270. but he names

  1271. them.

  1272. They got

  1273. names.

  1274. And that

  1275. ensures that

  1276. not one of

  1277. them is

  1278. missing.

  1279. Psalm 147,

    Psalms 147:4

  1280. verse 4,

  1281. it says,

  1282. God determines

  1283. the number

  1284. of stars,

  1285. and to all

  1286. of them he

  1287. gives them

  1288. names.

  1289. Psalm 147,

    Psalms 147:4

  1290. verse 4.

  1291. So,

  1292. the whole

  1293. point is to

  1294. teach us some

  1295. astronomy lesson,

  1296. the answer is

  1297. no.

  1298. So,

  1299. what's the

  1300. catch?

  1301. God is

  1302. trying to

  1303. teach Israel

  1304. and trying

  1305. to teach

  1306. us something

  1307. about himself

  1308. that we don't

  1309. need to

  1310. miss.

  1311. If God

  1312. can create

  1313. the stars

  1314. and name

  1315. all of them

  1316. and not

  1317. lose any

  1318. of them,

  1319. surely he

  1320. will not

  1321. forget his

  1322. people who

  1323. are so much

  1324. greater,

  1325. those that he

  1326. died to

  1327. save.

  1328. He will

  1329. not forget

  1330. his promise

  1331. to them.

  1332. So,

  1333. if he

  1334. manages the

  1335. universe,

  1336. do you

  1337. think he

  1338. will lose

  1339. track of

  1340. you?

  1341. And the

  1342. answer is

  1343. no.

  1344. He keeps

  1345. his promise.

  1346. Alright,

  1347. part three,

  1348. really quickly.

  1349. Part three,

  1350. the greatness

  1351. of God is

  1352. the renewal

  1353. of his

  1354. people.

  1355. The greatness

  1356. of God is

  1357. the renewal

  1358. of his

  1359. people.

  1360. And this

  1361. starts in

  1362. verse 27,

  1363. so break

  1364. this up into

  1365. three little

  1366. separate parts.

  1367. Number one,

  1368. our immense

  1369. despair.

  1370. Verse 27,

  1371. Why do you

  1372. say, O Jacob,

  1373. and speak,

  1374. O Israel,

  1375. my way is

  1376. hidden from

  1377. the Lord,

  1378. and my right

  1379. hand is

  1380. disregarded

  1381. by my

  1382. God?

  1383. So he

  1384. knows that

  1385. the Jews

  1386. in the

  1387. future,

  1388. in exile,

  1389. in Babylon,

  1390. are going

  1391. to feel

  1392. like,

  1393. has God

  1394. forgotten

  1395. us?

  1396. Has he

  1397. grown

  1398. ignorant of

  1399. our hard

  1400. conditions?

  1401. Is he

  1402. so busy

  1403. that he

  1404. can't take

  1405. note of

  1406. us?

  1407. It's that

  1408. complaint.

  1409. But,

  1410. remember

  1411. though,

  1412. God is

  1413. always true

  1414. to his

  1415. covenant

  1416. people.

  1417. Despite our

  1418. unbelief,

  1419. despite our

  1420. lack of

  1421. faith at

  1422. times,

  1423. he stays

  1424. true to

  1425. us.

  1426. So when

  1427. we're at

  1428. our weakness

  1429. and our

  1430. darkness,

  1431. God intervenes

  1432. to bring

  1433. us comfort

  1434. and to

  1435. strengthen

  1436. us to

  1437. that end.

  1438. So,

  1439. what weighs

  1440. heavily on

  1441. your mind

  1442. that you

  1443. need comfort

  1444. and encouragement

  1445. for?

  1446. Are you

  1447. wondering

  1448. if your

  1449. job is

  1450. going to

  1451. be enough

  1452. to take

  1453. care of

  1454. your family

  1455. in the

  1456. coming years?

  1457. Are you

  1458. worried about

  1459. our economy?

  1460. Are you

  1461. worried about

  1462. the chaos

  1463. in the

  1464. world?

  1465. The

  1466. certain

  1467. political

  1468. parties'

  1469. agendas

  1470. against the

  1471. unborn?

  1472. For

  1473. illness or

  1474. loss of a

  1475. family member?

  1476. God

  1477. weighs you

  1478. down?

  1479. What do

  1480. you need

  1481. encouragement

  1482. with?

  1483. Don't

  1484. repeat what

  1485. they're

  1486. repeating.

  1487. Like,

  1488. does our

  1489. God even

  1490. notice us?

  1491. Because God

  1492. is telling

  1493. you,

  1494. yes,

  1495. I see

  1496. you.

  1497. I care.

  1498. Then He

  1499. answers,

  1500. right?

  1501. This is

  1502. number two,

  1503. God's

  1504. greatness.

  1505. This

  1506. starts in

  1507. verse 28.

  1508. He answers

  1509. that.

  1510. Have you

  1511. not known?

  1512. Have you

  1513. not heard?

  1514. The Lord

  1515. is the

  1516. everlasting

  1517. God,

  1518. the creator

  1519. of the

  1520. ends of

  1521. the

  1522. earth.

  1523. He does

  1524. not faint

  1525. or grow

  1526. weary.

  1527. His

  1528. understanding

  1529. is

  1530. unsearchable.

  1531. He gives

  1532. power to

  1533. the faint

  1534. and to

  1535. him who

  1536. has no

  1537. might,

  1538. he increases

  1539. strength.

  1540. So,

  1541. he draws

  1542. this sharp

  1543. comparison

  1544. between

  1545. mortal,

  1546. weak

  1547. mankind

  1548. and

  1549. himself.

  1550. The

  1551. Lord is

  1552. the

  1553. everlasting

  1554. God,

  1555. meaning

  1556. He is

  1557. eternal.

  1558. He

  1559. always

  1560. has

  1561. existed.

  1562. He

  1563. exists

  1564. and He

  1565. will

  1566. always

  1567. exist.

  1568. In

  1569. Revelation,

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1570. chapter 1,

  1571. he says,

  1572. you hear

  1573. them crying

  1574. out,

  1575. the Lord

  1576. God

  1577. who is,

  1578. who was,

  1579. and who

  1580. is to

  1581. come,

  1582. the

  1583. Almighty.

  1584. Revelation

  1585. 1.8.

  1586. So,

  1587. God is

  1588. saying,

  1589. no one

  1590. created

  1591. me,

  1592. no one

  1593. had the

  1594. power to

  1595. bring me

  1596. into being

  1597. or shape

  1598. my personality.

  1599. I had no

  1600. beginning and

  1601. I will have

  1602. no end.

  1603. Alright?

  1604. So,

  1605. further,

  1606. He is the

  1607. creator of the

  1608. ends of

  1609. earth and

  1610. He does

  1611. not grow

  1612. faint or

  1613. weary.

  1614. Right?

  1615. So,

  1616. He spoke

  1617. all things

  1618. into existence

  1619. by the

  1620. power of

  1621. His

  1622. word.

  1623. In His

  1624. understanding,

  1625. His

  1626. knowledge is

  1627. omniscient,

  1628. unsearchable.

  1629. And then

  1630. lastly,

  1631. our renewal,

  1632. number three,

  1633. our renewal.

  1634. Verse 30.

  1635. One of those

  1636. well-known

  1637. coffee mug

  1638. verses that

  1639. get abused

  1640. a lot.

  1641. Verse 30.

  1642. Even

  1643. youth shall

  1644. faint

  1645. and be

  1646. weary,

  1647. and young

  1648. men

  1649. shall fall

  1650. exhausted.

  1651. But,

  1652. they who

  1653. wait for

  1654. the Lord

  1655. shall renew

  1656. their strength.

  1657. They shall

  1658. mount up

  1659. with wings

  1660. like eagles.

  1661. They shall

  1662. run and

  1663. not be

  1664. weary.

  1665. They shall

  1666. walk and

  1667. not be

  1668. faint.

  1669. And so,

  1670. we see that

  1671. it's not

  1672. our strength

  1673. to endure

  1674. these things,

  1675. but God's

  1676. strength.

  1677. He is the

  1678. source of

  1679. our strength

  1680. and not

  1681. our physical

  1682. abilities.

  1683. So,

  1684. look at

  1685. verse 30.

  1686. It says

  1687. young men.

  1688. It actually

  1689. means picked

  1690. men.

  1691. So,

  1692. picked men,

  1693. those who

  1694. are picked

  1695. out for

  1696. their prowess,

  1697. the prime

  1698. of their

  1699. strength,

  1700. the guys

  1701. who are

  1702. the best

  1703. of the

  1704. best,

  1705. like pick

  1706. those men

  1707. to be on

  1708. your team

  1709. to win

  1710. kind of

  1711. idea.

  1712. Even

  1713. those men

  1714. are going

  1715. to fall

  1716. flat,

  1717. utterly

  1718. exhausted.

  1719. Right?

  1720. So,

  1721. you may

  1722. think if

  1723. I was a

  1724. little

  1725. stronger,

  1726. I could

  1727. handle

  1728. everything.

  1729. Nope.

  1730. God will

  1731. still find

  1732. a way

  1733. to humble

  1734. you.

  1735. But,

  1736. he,

  1737. he never

  1738. tires or

  1739. grow weary.

  1740. He cares

  1741. about his

  1742. people.

  1743. Right?

  1744. Even in

  1745. our greatest

  1746. despair.

  1747. So,

  1748. then,

  1749. secondly,

  1750. look at

  1751. this.

  1752. It says,

  1753. we must

  1754. learn to

  1755. wait for

  1756. the Lord.

  1757. That same

  1758. word can

  1759. be translated

  1760. hope in

  1761. the Lord.

  1762. So,

  1763. those who

  1764. expect God,

  1765. those who

  1766. hope for

  1767. Him,

  1768. those who

  1769. look to

  1770. Him,

  1771. as believers

  1772. in Christ,

  1773. we can see

  1774. with

  1775. unprecedented

  1776. clarity

  1777. exactly

  1778. what it

  1779. is to

  1780. wait for

  1781. the Lord.

  1782. So,

  1783. are you

  1784. willing to

  1785. wait for

  1786. God?

  1787. Or,

  1788. are you a

  1789. control freak

  1790. who wants

  1791. to tell

  1792. God the

  1793. pace is

  1794. set?

  1795. It has

  1796. to be

  1797. this way.

  1798. It has

  1799. to look

  1800. that way.

  1801. I must

  1802. know.

  1803. Or,

  1804. are you

  1805. okay with

  1806. God's

  1807. timing,

  1808. His terms,

  1809. allowing Him

  1810. to set the

  1811. pace?

  1812. There's

  1813. freedom in

  1814. surrendering

  1815. that.

  1816. In God,

  1817. we can

  1818. discover

  1819. reservoirs

  1820. of strength

  1821. we had

  1822. no idea

  1823. about.

  1824. When we

  1825. ourselves

  1826. are exhausted,

  1827. we can

  1828. continue not

  1829. to look to

  1830. our own

  1831. resources,

  1832. but God's.

  1833. Right?

  1834. He doesn't

  1835. faint or

  1836. grow weary.

  1837. He gives

  1838. power to

  1839. the faint.

  1840. So,

  1841. the more

  1842. we learn

  1843. to appreciate

  1844. our

  1845. smallness,

  1846. our

  1847. insignificance,

  1848. and accept

  1849. our own

  1850. limitations,

  1851. the more

  1852. we will

  1853. glory in

  1854. the power

  1855. of God.

  1856. Right?

  1857. I'll mention

  1858. the eagles

  1859. because people

  1860. want me to

  1861. mention the

  1862. eagles,

  1863. not the

  1864. football team.

  1865. It says,

  1866. they shall

  1867. mount up,

  1868. meaning to

  1869. arise,

  1870. to ascend,

  1871. to climb

  1872. with wings

  1873. of eagles.

  1874. Eagles are

  1875. pretty darn

  1876. cool creatures

  1877. that God

  1878. made.

  1879. Finely

  1880. tuned.

  1881. I think

  1882. they're like

  1883. eight times

  1884. more acute

  1885. than we

  1886. are on

  1887. everything.

  1888. They can

  1889. see twice

  1890. the distance

  1891. that any

  1892. human can

  1893. see.

  1894. They

  1895. actually don't

  1896. run away

  1897. from storms.

  1898. They fly

  1899. at storms.

  1900. Isn't that

  1901. crazy?

  1902. Like,

  1903. come on.

  1904. So,

  1905. they fly

  1906. up above

  1907. storms.

  1908. Isn't that

  1909. nuts?

  1910. Actually,

  1911. the storm is

  1912. below them

  1913. and they're

  1914. up here.

  1915. They can fly

  1916. at altitudes

  1917. of close

  1918. to 10,000

  1919. feet.

  1920. And so,

  1921. the point

  1922. is,

  1923. the point

  1924. is,

  1925. if we put

  1926. our trust

  1927. in God

  1928. and allow

  1929. Him to

  1930. renew our

  1931. strength,

  1932. He will

  1933. lift us

  1934. up above

  1935. the storms

  1936. on trials

  1937. of life.

  1938. So,

  1939. not to

  1940. fret about

  1941. the future.

  1942. Accept your

  1943. limitations

  1944. and allow

  1945. Christ to

  1946. be your

  1947. strength.

  1948. And finally,

  1949. in closing,

  1950. I didn't ask you

  1951. to turn

  1952. anywhere,

  1953. but look,

  1954. in closing,

  1955. 2 Corinthians

  1956. 4,

  1957. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  1958. 4,

  1959. verse 16,

  1960. in closing.

  1961. So,

  1962. if we will

  1963. accept our

  1964. limitations

  1965. in our

  1966. own

  1967. strength,

  1968. knowledge

  1969. and wisdom,

  1970. we will

  1971. have

  1972. God's.

  1973. In Christ

  1974. Jesus,

  1975. we have

  1976. all we

  1977. need

  1978. and more.

  1979. And so,

  1980. Paul picks

  1981. up on this,

  1982. just like how

  1983. weak and

  1984. insignificant

  1985. we are.

  1986. It would

  1987. be hard

  1988. not to

  1989. read the

  1990. whole chapter.

  1991. 2 Corinthians

  1992. 4,

  1993. we'll just

  1994. read a few

  1995. verses.

  1996. Look at

  1997. verse 16.

  1998. And remember

  1999. the words,

  2000. comfort,

  2001. comfort my

  2002. people,

  2003. out of

  2004. Isaiah 40.

  2005. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  2006. 4,

  2007. verse 16.

  2008. So we

  2009. do not

  2010. lose heart.

  2011. Though our

  2012. outer self

  2013. is wasting

  2014. away,

  2015. our inner

  2016. self is

  2017. being renewed

  2018. day by

  2019. day.

  2020. For this

  2021. light and

  2022. momentary

  2023. affliction

  2024. is preparing

  2025. for us

  2026. an eternal

  2027. weight of

  2028. glory beyond

  2029. all comparison.

  2030. As we

  2031. look not to

  2032. the things

  2033. that are

  2034. seen,

  2035. but to

  2036. the things

  2037. that are

  2038. unseen.

  2039. For the

  2040. things that

  2041. are seen

  2042. are transient,

  2043. are temporary.

  2044. The things

  2045. that are

  2046. unseen

  2047. are eternal.

  2048. So in

  2049. Christ,

  2050. we look

  2051. to the

  2052. eternal.

  2053. Right?

  2054. For His

  2055. resources,

  2056. His wisdom,

  2057. His power,

  2058. all is

  2059. ours in

  2060. Jesus Christ.

  2061. Alright?

  2062. So,

  2063. I hope that

  2064. focusing on

  2065. the greatness

  2066. and power

  2067. of God

  2068. is like a

  2069. source to

  2070. snap you

  2071. out of

  2072. depression,

  2073. anxiety,

  2074. fear,

  2075. laziness.

  2076. is enough

  2077. to motivate

  2078. us when

  2079. we see how

  2080. big our

  2081. God is.

  2082. So stop
