  1. It's such a great reminder of the life that we have in Christ.

  2. And I know we have a lot of visitors with us, so no matter what brought you today,

  3. whether it was to check a religious box like Christmas, or maybe you were drug here by your family or your friends,

  4. and you'd rather be somewhere else,

  5. maybe just start going through the motions of,

  6. I'm just here on Sunday, and this is just what we do, but your heart's really kind of cold

  7. and just needs to be revived. I pray that God's Word would do that for you this morning.

  8. And it's really interesting, when you read the Gospels,

  9. a lot of the people that Jesus encounters, a lot of people that Jesus changes,

  10. are people who seemingly run into Him by accident.

  11. That wasn't a plan, it just sort of happened.

  12. And Jesus changed them forever.

  13. So no matter why you came today or why you're here,

  14. perhaps there's more that lies in store for you than expected this Easter.

  15. But I want to read over the story of the resurrection here in John

  16. with the hope that it will have a great bearing on your soul today.

  17. That as we read it, the Holy Spirit would use the Word of God

  18. to convict you, to challenge you,

  19. to awaken you to your need for a risen Savior in your life,

  20. to remind those of us who do belong to Christ

  21. that it's not just a Jesus of the past that we worship,

  22. but one that's living, active, and who is returning one day.

  23. But particularly, why is resurrection so important?

  24. I kind of want to bring it to your attention

  25. by confronting our greatest fear.

  26. And that fear would be death.

  27. The modern mood is to live life as if death was not waiting for us at the end.

  28. We do all we can to ignore the thought of death, to avoid it.

  29. A lot of us, like I said, we eat healthy, we exercise,

  30. we try to sleep well, take medication, whatever it may be.

  31. But not only can we not defeat death,

  32. we just can't seem to escape it.

  33. Everything around us, we live in a world that's just decaying before our eyes,

  34. and we with it.

  35. We can't really outrun death.

  36. Death makes us uncomfortable because it makes us feel weak, vulnerable, and unable.

  37. It confronts how small and how little our strength is.

  38. But we are not very powerful at all.

  39. So death is the enemy that wins at every turn.

  40. No matter who we are, it catches us.

  41. And some of us have been able to avoid it a lot of our lives.

  42. As a young boy, I began being acquainted with the idea of death

  43. as I've watched two of my great-grandparents die,

  44. three of my grandparents, my uncle,

  45. and then a couple years ago, my own father.

  46. I'm thankful to say that all six of these people were believers in Christ.

  47. That's why the hope we have of resurrection.

  48. And so, as we confront the idea of death,

  49. as we find ourselves running from it, avoiding it, ignoring it,

  50. the Bible, unlike us, confronts it head-on.

  51. It doesn't try to get around the issue at all.

  52. If you read the earlier chapters of the book of Genesis,

  53. right in the beginning of the Bible,

  54. right after chapter 3, after the fall,

  55. you'll see all these references, this phrase is just repeated,

  56. and he died, and he died, and he died,

  57. which was not a part of the original plan, right, of mankind.

  58. But we, myself, and you, we have sinned and rebelled against God.

  59. But have you ever stopped and thought about the question,

  60. why death?

  61. Like, why is death the answer or the consequence?

  62. Don Carson, a guy I respect and appreciate a lot,

  63. a pastor up in Canada, he wrote,

  64. But why death?

  65. And he said,

  66. Death is God's limit on creatures whose sin is they want to be gods.

  67. Death is God's limit on creatures whose sin is they want to be gods.

  68. By death, we learn that we are mortal,

  69. that we are not God at all.

  70. Death is God's determination to set a limit

  71. on the arrogance of man.

  72. We think and live as if we were God.

  73. Like, I will declare what's right.

  74. I will live the way that I want to live,

  75. regardless of what God says.

  76. And in our own day, even just insane things,

  77. where people think that they are God,

  78. they can, like, declare

  79. what's right from wrong,

  80. declare what gender they are,

  81. declare all sorts of manner of things

  82. that just say that,

  83. hey, I am omnipotent,

  84. and I can decide what I want to do.

  85. But death declares otherwise.

  86. It says that we are not invincible.

  87. We are mortal,

  88. and we will taste death

  89. because of sin.

  90. We live our lives, right,

  91. just thinking that we can somehow avoid it.

  92. But death is something that man,

  93. you and I included,

  94. we have freely bought on ourselves.

  95. You and I, right,

  96. by our sin and rebellion against God.

  97. And the Scripture speaks of physical death,

  98. which we all will face, probably,

  99. as well as, more importantly,

  100. spiritual death.

  101. Sin brought about spiritual death in us.

  102. That's Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  103. And so, this is why I want to confront

  104. the idea of death today.

  105. This is why resurrection is so important

  106. to the life of the follower of Jesus.

  107. And we're going to look at John's account.

  108. All right?

  109. But John was a disciple of Christ,

  110. but he wasn't just an eyewitness.

  111. He was a very close observer

  112. of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

  113. And he wrote in chapter 19, verse 35,

  114. he says,

  115. He who saw it has bore witness.

  116. His testimony is true.

  117. And he knows that he is telling the truth

  118. that you may believe.

  119. And earlier on,

  120. if we want to just connect the dots here,

  121. in chapter 19,

  122. verses 1 through 37,

  123. it speaks of the crucifixion of Jesus.

  124. This is where,

  125. it's more than just an innocent man

  126. dying on a cross.

  127. There is more than meets the eye.

  128. In the spiritual realms,

  129. Jesus is bearing the wrath of God,

  130. standing in our place,

  131. taking our punishment that we deserve,

  132. and bearing the just wrath of God

  133. on our behalf,

  134. though he was innocent.

  135. And so,

  136. Jesus was fulfilling on the cross

  137. a substitutionary work

  138. that was foretold by the prophet Isaiah.

  139. But he was wounded

  140. for our transgressions.

  141. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  142. And upon him was the chastisement

  143. that brought us peace.

  144. And by his stripes,

  145. we are healed.

  146. Spoken 700 years before that event,

  147. Christ is fulfilling that prophecy,

  148. the punishment of our sins.

  149. And John uses the phrase,

  150. the king,

  151. referring to Jesus

  152. almost 13 times in his gospel.

  153. And isn't it such a fitting description?

  154. Jesus walks through this gospel

  155. in the most royal

  156. and dignified manner

  157. amidst the unimaginable,

  158. unjust suffering,

  159. torture,

  160. ridicule,

  161. and persecution.

  162. He handles it just like a king.

  163. And so,

  164. he appears to us

  165. on the outside,

  166. weak and vulnerable

  167. and dying.

  168. In reality,

  169. he is God's king.

  170. And all throughout

  171. these last few chapters of John,

  172. it's undeniable

  173. that Jesus is in control.

  174. Even if it seems like

  175. he's not on the outside.

  176. He told Pilate,

  177. Pilate told him,

  178. I have the power

  179. to release you.

  180. I have the power

  181. to set you free

  182. or to not execute you.

  183. And Jesus basically told him,

  184. you have no power

  185. whatsoever

  186. except what's been granted

  187. to you

  188. from above.

  189. Jesus was totally in control

  190. of his life,

  191. his death,

  192. and now his resurrection.

  193. So,

  194. he is the king.

  195. So,

  196. that's where we're going to get

  197. some of our points from today.

  198. But before we get into our text,

  199. it is important for us to remember,

  200. I'm just going to make a note of this,

  201. but you'll understand why.

  202. The resurrection is so important.

  203. If Jesus had just remained in the tomb,

  204. if he had simply just died on the cross,

  205. the work of salvation

  206. would be in vain.

  207. All that he said,

  208. all that he promised,

  209. all that he did would be in vain.

  210. He would just be another dead Messiah.

  211. But Jesus had to be vindicated.

  212. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15,

  213. if Christ has not been raised,

  214. your faith is futile,

  215. and you are still dead in your sins.

  216. It's a very scary thought.

  217. So,

  218. we can't,

  219. isn't it amazing

  220. that so much of

  221. what we talk about

  222. in the church

  223. and in the Christian life

  224. is just,

  225. just alone on the cross,

  226. which is vital and important,

  227. but it wasn't really so

  228. in the early church.

  229. They spoke of the resurrection

  230. just as much

  231. as they spoke about the cross.

  232. So,

  233. it challenged us today

  234. to speak of the resurrection

  235. in everyday life

  236. and how different

  237. it would impact us.

  238. So,

  239. as we look at

  240. the resurrection of Christ

  241. here in chapter 19

  242. and end of 20 of John,

  243. we'll just kind of do it

  244. scene by scene.

  245. But we'll start

  246. in chapter 19,

  247. verse 38,

  248. and this is point number one.

  249. There's just three points.

  250. Point number one,

  251. the king is buried.

  252. The king is buried.

  253. 19,

  254. verse 38,

  255. After these things,

  256. Joseph of Arimathea,

  257. who was a disciple of Jesus,

  258. but secretly for fear

  259. of the Jews,

  260. asked Pilate

  261. that he might take away

  262. the body of Jesus.

  263. And Pilate gave him permission.

  264. So,

  265. he came and took away

  266. his body.

  267. Nicodemus also,

  268. who earlier had come

  269. to Jesus by night,

  270. came bringing a mixture

  271. of myrrh and aloes,

  272. about 75 pounds in weight.

  273. So,

  274. they took the body of Jesus

  275. and bound it in linen cloths

  276. with the spices,

  277. as is the burial custom

  278. of the Jews.

  279. Now,

  280. in the place

  281. where he was crucified,

  282. there was a garden.

  283. And in the garden,

  284. a new tomb,

  285. in which no one

  286. had yet been laid.

  287. So,

  288. because of the Jewish

  289. day of preparation,

  290. since the tomb

  291. was close at hand,

  292. they laid Jesus there.

  293. So,

  294. let's stop

  295. and make some observations.

  296. So,

  297. first,

  298. it mentions these two men,

  299. Joseph of Arimathea

  300. and Nicodemus.

  301. Joseph was a wealthy member

  302. of the Jewish ruling council,

  303. according to Matthew 27.

  304. And he humbly asked Pilate

  305. for the body,

  306. for Jesus' body.

  307. And it says in Luke,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  308. chapter 23,

  309. it says about Joseph,

  310. he was a member

  311. of the council,

  312. a good and righteous man

  313. who had consented

  314. to the decision

  315. and action.

  316. And he was looking

  317. for the kingdom of God.

  318. This man went to Pilate

  319. and asked for the body

  320. of Jesus.

  321. So,

  322. it implies here

  323. that Joseph

  324. was indeed

  325. a believer.

  326. In fact,

  327. he's called

  328. as much

  329. a rich man

  330. from Arimathea

  331. named Joseph

  332. who also

  333. was a disciple

  334. of Jesus.

  335. And then secondly,

  336. Nicodemus,

  337. the reluctant

  338. but believing

  339. Pharisee,

  340. a member

  341. of the Sanhedrin.

  342. He was the one

  343. who spoke to Jesus

  344. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  345. And later

  346. in the Gospel of John,

  347. he confronted

  348. the Pharisees

  349. unjust,

  350. seeking to trap

  351. Jesus.

  352. He said to them

  353. in Jesus' defense,

  354. does our law

  355. judge a man

  356. without first

  357. giving him a hearing

  358. and learning

  359. what he does?

  360. So,

  361. we see that eventually,

  362. more than likely,

  363. Nicodemus came

  364. full circle

  365. and became

  366. a true believer

  367. of Christ.

  368. And then we see

  369. there's preparation

  370. for the body

  371. in these verses.

  372. The final burial

  373. preparations,

  374. the final ones,

  375. were left undone

  376. due to the Jewish

  377. day of preparation,

  378. which was

  379. beginning of

  380. the Sabbath,

  381. when all work

  382. had to cease,

  383. especially dealing

  384. with a burial.

  385. Right?

  386. So,

  387. they did minimal

  388. preparation

  389. on the body

  390. and they rushed

  391. it into the tomb.

  392. About 75 pounds

  393. of spices

  394. they used.

  395. Myrth,

  396. which is like

  397. this gummy

  398. resin that they

  399. would grind down

  400. to powder

  401. and sort of

  402. throw it over

  403. the body

  404. to kind of

  405. stifle

  406. the smell.

  407. linen cloth

  408. that were just

  409. wrapped around

  410. the body.

  411. And then it says

  412. the tomb,

  413. which is more

  414. than likely

  415. either rock-hewn

  416. or some sort

  417. of natural

  418. cave that

  419. existed that

  420. made it like

  421. a vault

  422. where a big

  423. heavy stone

  424. would be rolled

  425. over the entrance.

  426. And all of this,

  427. believe it or not,

  428. happened that the

  429. scripture would be

  430. fulfilled.

  431. The Old Testament

  432. scripture of

  433. Isaiah 53

  434. foretelling of

  435. the burial

  436. of the Messiah.

  437. It says,

  438. they made his

  439. grave with the

  440. wicked and

  441. with the rich

  442. man in his

  443. death.

  444. Although the

  445. suffering servant

  446. mentioned in

  447. Isaiah was

  448. condemned as a

  449. criminal,

  450. there's the

  451. with the wicked

  452. part,

  453. he was buried

  454. in the expensive

  455. tomb belonging

  456. to that rich

  457. man,

  458. Joseph.

  459. So amazingly,

  460. right,

  461. we see these

  462. things being

  463. fulfilled before

  464. our eyes.

  465. This gets us

  466. to point number

  467. two,

  468. which we start

  469. in chapter 20.

  470. Point number

  471. two,

  472. the empty

  473. tomb of

  474. the king.

  475. The empty

  476. tomb of

  477. the king.

  478. This is

  479. verses 1

  480. through 18.

  481. We'll start

  482. with just a

  483. piece of it.

  484. It says,

  485. Now on the

  486. first day of

  487. the week,

  488. Mary Magdalene

  489. came to the

  490. tomb early,

  491. while it was

  492. still dark,

  493. and saw that

  494. the stone had

  495. been taken

  496. away from

  497. the tomb.

  498. So she ran

  499. and went to

  500. Simon Peter

  501. and the other

  502. disciple,

  503. the one whom

  504. Jesus loved,

  505. and said to

  506. them,

  507. They have

  508. taken the

  509. Lord out

  510. of the

  511. tomb,

  512. and we do

  513. not know

  514. where they

  515. have laid

  516. him.

  517. So Peter

  518. went out

  519. with the

  520. other disciple,

  521. and they

  522. were going

  523. toward the

  524. tomb,

  525. both of

  526. them running

  527. together.

  528. But the

  529. other disciple

  530. outran Peter

  531. and reached

  532. the tomb

  533. first.

  534. And stooping

  535. in,

  536. he saw

  537. linen cloths

  538. lying there,

  539. but he did

  540. not go in.

  541. Then Simon

  542. Peter came

  543. following him

  544. and went

  545. into the

  546. tomb.

  547. He saw

  548. linen cloths

  549. lying there,

  550. and the

  551. face cloth

  552. which had

  553. been on

  554. Jesus'

  555. head,

  556. not lying

  557. with the

  558. linen cloths,

  559. but folded

  560. up in its

  561. place by

  562. itself.

  563. Then the

  564. other

  565. disciple,

  566. who reached

  567. the tomb

  568. first,

  569. also went

  570. in.

  571. He saw

  572. and believed.

  573. For as

  574. yet he did

  575. not understand

  576. the scripture,

  577. that he

  578. must rise

  579. from death.

  580. And the

  581. disciples went

  582. back to

  583. their homes.

  584. So we

  585. see that

  586. Mary Magdalene

  587. reports on

  588. the empty

  589. tomb.

  590. It was the

  591. first day of

  592. the week,

  593. which we

  594. would call

  595. Sunday,

  596. but the

  597. Jews didn't

  598. name their

  599. days,

  600. they numbered

  601. their days.

  602. This is why

  603. it's the

  604. first day of

  605. the week,

  606. which we

  607. would call

  608. Sunday.

  609. Mary Magdalene

  610. is the one

  611. that Jesus

  612. healed of

  613. demonic

  614. possession,

  615. and she

  616. just followed

  617. Jesus out

  618. of joy

  619. and gratitude

  620. for what

  621. he had

  622. done,

  623. even followed

  624. him to

  625. the foot

  626. of the

  627. cross.

  628. When a

  629. lot of

  630. the other

  631. disciples

  632. were hiding,

  633. she actually

  634. went to

  635. the foot

  636. of the

  637. cross,

  638. and that's

  639. seen in

  640. Matthew 28.

  641. John also

  642. implies,

  643. right here,

  644. that she

  645. got there

  646. while it

  647. was still

  648. dark.

  649. So low

  650. visibility,

  651. but explains

  652. that this

  653. large stone

  654. had been

  655. rolled back,

  656. right,

  657. by the

  658. angel of

  659. the Lord,

  660. which

  661. revealed that

  662. the soldiers

  663. that had

  664. been there

  665. had already

  666. gone.

  667. They had

  668. fled the

  669. scene.

  670. So she's

  671. seeing the

  672. aftermath of

  673. the resurrection.

  674. Have you

  675. ever thought

  676. about this?

  677. The stone

  678. being rolled

  679. away,

  680. that wasn't

  681. so that

  682. Jesus could

  683. get out.

  684. That was

  685. for us

  686. to say

  687. that he

  688. actually has

  689. been risen.

  690. As we'll

  691. see in a

  692. little while,

  693. Jesus appears

  694. to his

  695. disciples when

  696. they were

  697. behind locked

  698. doors.

  699. So Jesus

  700. and his

  701. resurrection

  702. body didn't

  703. need the

  704. stone removed,

  705. but the

  706. fact that it

  707. would be

  708. there for

  709. our faith

  710. that he

  711. is gone,

  712. he's no

  713. longer here.

  714. So they

  715. fled,

  716. the soldiers

  717. fled to

  718. save their

  719. own skin

  720. and conspired

  721. with the

  722. chief priest

  723. to cover it

  724. up.

  725. That's in

  726. Matthew 28

    Matthew 28:11–15

  727. verses 11

  728. through 15.

  729. So Mary

  730. runs and

  731. tells the

  732. other

  733. disciples.

  734. So just

  735. imagine what's

  736. going through

  737. her mind

  738. right now.

  739. But the

  740. thought of

  741. resurrection

  742. is not

  743. on her

  744. mind.

  745. She thinks

  746. that just

  747. something has

  748. happened.

  749. She thinks

  750. that someone

  751. has taken

  752. his body.

  753. So what

  754. is going

  755. on?

  756. Could be

  757. what she

  758. is thinking.

  759. But she

  760. tells Peter

  761. and John,

  762. says they

  763. ran to the

  764. tomb right

  765. away to

  766. explore what

  767. Mary had

  768. said.

  769. I think

  770. it's really

  771. funny that

  772. John mentions

  773. that he

  774. outran Peter

  775. twice.

  776. So either

  777. his brotherly

  778. way of just

  779. saying he

  780. was faster

  781. than Peter

  782. or he

  783. was just

  784. immensely

  785. eager.

  786. Or perhaps

  787. Peter was

  788. just a

  789. bigger guy

  790. and not

  791. as nimble

  792. as John.

  793. Who knows?

  794. But just

  795. the detail

  796. of the

  797. account.

  798. But upon

  799. arriving at

  800. the tomb,

  801. John went

  802. in and

  803. Peter

  804. saw it.

  805. And the

  806. Greek actually

  807. means they

  808. peeped in.

  809. And at

  810. first it was

  811. Peter.

  812. Peter saw

  813. it.

  814. And when

  815. he saw

  816. it, he

  817. was confused.

  818. He was

  819. bewildered.

  820. He was just

  821. like, what

  822. is going

  823. on?

  824. John stayed

  825. there and

  826. looked a

  827. little closer

  828. and first

  829. observed that

  830. he said he

  831. saw the

  832. linen cloths

  833. lying there.

  834. The Greek

  835. seems to

  836. suggest that

  837. the garments

  838. had not been

  839. just thrown

  840. around all

  841. over the

  842. place.

  843. And if

  844. you were

  845. like taking

  846. off clothes

  847. and you

  848. just threw

  849. the linen

  850. cloths

  851. everywhere,

  852. strewned

  853. out, but

  854. they were

  855. laying exactly

  856. where the

  857. body had

  858. Jesus had

  859. been laid.

  860. It's almost

  861. as if the

  862. body just

  863. withdrew

  864. itself from

  865. the wrappings

  866. and it

  867. just collapsed

  868. where it

  869. was.

  870. That's like

  871. what it's

  872. implying.

  873. That's just

  874. crazy.

  875. Crazy.

  876. And also

  877. it's all

  878. the head

  879. cloth,

  880. right?

  881. Just rolled

  882. up and

  883. sitting over

  884. by itself

  885. somewhere

  886. else.

  887. Right?

  888. Nice and

  889. neat.

  890. And again,

  891. the body

  892. just seemed

  893. to have

  894. withdrawn

  895. itself.

  896. So secondly,

  897. the face

  898. cloth put

  899. over by

  900. its own

  901. in a

  902. different

  903. place.

  904. And it

  905. says that

  906. John,

  907. seeing this

  908. astounding

  909. sight,

  910. saw and

  911. believed.

  912. It was

  913. like sufficient

  914. for him to

  915. at least

  916. believe that

  917. Jesus had

  918. risen from

  919. the dead.

  920. But then it

  921. says that they

  922. still did not

  923. understand the

  924. scripture,

  925. so it must

  926. imply that he

  927. at least

  928. believed that

  929. Christ had

  930. risen,

  931. even though he

  932. didn't fully

  933. know what

  934. that implied.

  935. and it

  936. says that

  937. they didn't

  938. know the

  939. scriptures,

  940. the Old

  941. Testament

  942. scriptures that

  943. spoke of

  944. the Messiah

  945. and how he

  946. would rise

  947. from death.

  948. Right?

  949. So just a

  950. quick thing

  951. for us to

  952. think about,

  953. will you be

  954. found faithful

  955. or will you

  956. be found in

  957. unbelief when

  958. God fulfills

  959. his word?

  960. Are you

  961. surprised or

  962. caught off guard

  963. when God

  964. actually fulfills

  965. one of his

  966. promises?

  967. promises?

  968. Do you

  969. patiently wait

  970. in faith for

  971. God to

  972. deliver on

  973. his promises?

  974. This is a

  975. lesson for us.

  976. It says they

  977. didn't know the

  978. scriptures.

  979. They didn't

  980. believe the

  981. scripture.

  982. Right?

  983. And now this

  984. is being fulfilled

  985. right in front

  986. of them.

  987. But see,

  988. this is very

  989. important.

  990. The resurrection,

  991. this could go

  992. on forever,

  993. I'll just make

  994. it really brief,

  995. but the

  996. resurrection is

  997. needed because

  998. it vindicated

  999. Jesus.

  1000. It showed,

  1001. it proved,

  1002. it declared

  1003. Jesus to be

  1004. true and

  1005. right.

  1006. Right?

  1007. That he was

  1008. indeed the

  1009. son of God

  1010. and all the

  1011. claims that

  1012. he made.

  1013. Again,

  1014. he would just

  1015. be another

  1016. dead Messiah.

  1017. It says in

  1018. Romans 1,

    Romans 1:3

  1019. verse 3,

  1020. Jesus was

  1021. declared to be

  1022. the son of

  1023. God in

  1024. power,

  1025. according to

  1026. the spirit of

  1027. holiness by

  1028. his resurrection

  1029. from the

  1030. dead,

  1031. Jesus Christ,

  1032. our Lord.

  1033. Lord.

  1034. So Jesus

  1035. didn't become

  1036. the son of

  1037. God at

  1038. the resurrection.

  1039. The resurrection

  1040. was the

  1041. powerful demonstration

  1042. that he was

  1043. indeed,

  1044. eternally,

  1045. the son of

  1046. God.

  1047. And so

  1048. after this

  1049. account,

  1050. all the other

  1051. disciples went

  1052. home,

  1053. but Mary

  1054. lingered.

  1055. We don't

  1056. know why

  1057. exactly,

  1058. maybe to

  1059. grieve,

  1060. or maybe

  1061. because she

  1062. was exhausted,

  1063. because I

  1064. just think

  1065. about the

  1066. back and

  1067. forth.

  1068. So she's

  1069. just sitting

  1070. there,

  1071. same thing

  1072. they're thinking,

  1073. what is going

  1074. on?

  1075. Look at

  1076. verse 11.

  1077. It says,

  1078. Mary stood

  1079. weeping outside

  1080. the tomb,

  1081. and as she

  1082. wept,

  1083. she stopped

  1084. to look into

  1085. the tomb,

  1086. and she

  1087. saw two

  1088. angels in

  1089. white,

  1090. sitting where

  1091. the body of

  1092. Jesus had

  1093. lain,

  1094. one at the

  1095. head and

  1096. one at the

  1097. feet.

  1098. They said

  1099. to her,

  1100. woman,

  1101. why are you

  1102. weeping?

  1103. She said

  1104. to them,

  1105. they have

  1106. taken away

  1107. my Lord,

  1108. and I do

  1109. not know

  1110. where they

  1111. have laid

  1112. him.

  1113. So,

  1114. we see

  1115. Mary here,

  1116. brokenhearted,

  1117. confused,

  1118. didn't leave

  1119. the tomb

  1120. until she

  1121. found out

  1122. what happened

  1123. to Jesus'

  1124. body.

  1125. And they

  1126. asked her,

  1127. why are

  1128. you weeping

  1129. when she

  1130. encounters

  1131. these majestic

  1132. beings?

  1133. And Mary

  1134. answers again

  1135. that they

  1136. did not

  1137. understand

  1138. the scriptures.

  1139. So the

  1140. appearance of

  1141. the angels

  1142. throughout the

  1143. life of

  1144. Christ,

  1145. at his

  1146. temptation,

  1147. at his

  1148. birth,

  1149. now at his

  1150. resurrection,

  1151. they were

  1152. even with

  1153. him in

  1154. the garden

  1155. of

  1156. Gethsemane.

  1157. So it's

  1158. just consistent

  1159. with the

  1160. ministry of

  1161. Jesus.

  1162. But imagine,

  1163. try to,

  1164. being in

  1165. her place,

  1166. heart pumping,

  1167. shock,

  1168. adrenaline running

  1169. through your

  1170. body,

  1171. and asking,

  1172. is this

  1173. really happening?

  1174. Did Jesus

  1175. actually do

  1176. what he was

  1177. going to say

  1178. he did?

  1179. And then

  1180. immediately,

  1181. verse 14,

  1182. having said

  1183. this,

  1184. right away,

  1185. she turned

  1186. around and

  1187. saw Jesus

  1188. standing,

  1189. but she

  1190. did not

  1191. know that

  1192. it was

  1193. Jesus.

  1194. And Jesus

  1195. said to

  1196. her,

  1197. woman,

  1198. why are

  1199. you weeping?

  1200. Whom are

  1201. you seeking?

  1202. Supposing him

  1203. to be the

  1204. gardener,

  1205. she said to

  1206. him,

  1207. sir,

  1208. if you

  1209. have carried

  1210. him away,

  1211. tell me

  1212. where you

  1213. have laid

  1214. him,

  1215. and I

  1216. will take

  1217. him away.

  1218. And Jesus

  1219. said to

  1220. her,

  1221. Mary.

  1222. She turned

  1223. and said

  1224. to him

  1225. in Aramaic,

  1226. Rabboni,

  1227. which means

  1228. teacher.

  1229. Jesus said

  1230. to her,

  1231. do not

  1232. cling to

  1233. me,

  1234. for I

  1235. have not

  1236. yet ascended

  1237. to the

  1238. Father.

  1239. But go

  1240. to my

  1241. brothers and

  1242. say to

  1243. them,

  1244. I am

  1245. ascending

  1246. to my

  1247. Father and

  1248. your

  1249. Father,

  1250. to my

  1251. God and

  1252. your

  1253. God.

  1254. So

  1255. suddenly,

  1256. right,

  1257. she whips

  1258. around and

  1259. saw Jesus

  1260. standing there,

  1261. and she

  1262. didn't

  1263. recognize

  1264. him,

  1265. but he

  1266. asked the

  1267. same

  1268. question

  1269. that the

  1270. angels

  1271. asked,

  1272. why are

  1273. you

  1274. weeping?

  1275. She

  1276. didn't

  1277. recognize

  1278. Jesus,

  1279. maybe because

  1280. it was

  1281. early dawn,

  1282. still outside,

  1283. maybe the

  1284. tears blurred

  1285. her vision,

  1286. didn't expect

  1287. to run into

  1288. Jesus,

  1289. but maybe

  1290. even his

  1291. resurrected

  1292. body looked

  1293. a little

  1294. different,

  1295. not for

  1296. sure,

  1297. we don't

  1298. know,

  1299. but what

  1300. any cause,

  1301. Mary didn't

  1302. recognize him

  1303. at first until

  1304. she said

  1305. his name,

  1306. her name,

  1307. said Mary,

  1308. and then

  1309. he recognized

  1310. I've heard

  1311. him say

  1312. my name

  1313. before,

  1314. this is

  1315. him,

  1316. right,

  1317. very clear

  1318. that when

  1319. Jesus calls

  1320. us,

  1321. he calls

  1322. us

  1323. personally,

  1324. that we

  1325. know his

  1326. name,

  1327. Jesus said

  1328. that earlier,

  1329. my sheep

  1330. know my

  1331. voice,

  1332. I call

  1333. them and

  1334. I give

  1335. them eternal

  1336. life,

  1337. and then

  1338. he says,

  1339. go and

  1340. tell them

  1341. that I'm

  1342. ascending

  1343. to the

  1344. Father,

  1345. right,

  1346. Jesus wanted

  1347. them to know

  1348. that he was

  1349. going to go

  1350. back,

  1351. so he

  1352. said,

  1353. go and

  1354. tell the

  1355. others

  1356. what you've

  1357. seen,

  1358. go and

  1359. tell them

  1360. that I

  1361. am indeed

  1362. alive,

  1363. and so

  1364. we keep

  1365. going,

  1366. we get to

  1367. number three

  1368. here,

  1369. this is the

  1370. last point,

  1371. the king

  1372. appears to

  1373. his hiding

  1374. disciples,

  1375. the king

  1376. appears to

  1377. his hiding

  1378. disciples,

  1379. this is in

  1380. verse,

  1381. sorry,

  1382. in verse

  1383. 18,

  1384. Mary Magdalene

  1385. went and

  1386. announced to

  1387. the disciples,

  1388. I have

  1389. seen the

  1390. Lord,

  1391. and that he

  1392. had said

  1393. these things

  1394. to her,

  1395. on the

  1396. evening of

  1397. that day,

  1398. the first

  1399. day of

  1400. the week,

  1401. the doors

  1402. being locked

  1403. were the

  1404. disciples,

  1405. were for

  1406. fear of

  1407. the Jews,

  1408. Jesus came

  1409. and stood

  1410. among them

  1411. and said to

  1412. them,

  1413. peace be

  1414. with you,

  1415. and when he

  1416. had said

  1417. this,

  1418. he showed

  1419. them his

  1420. hands and

  1421. his side,

  1422. then the

  1423. disciples were

  1424. glad when

  1425. they saw

  1426. the Lord,

  1427. Jesus said

  1428. to them

  1429. again,

  1430. peace be

  1431. with you,

  1432. as the

  1433. father has

  1434. sent me,

  1435. even so

  1436. I am

  1437. sending

  1438. you,

  1439. and when

  1440. he had

  1441. said this,

  1442. he breathed

  1443. on them

  1444. and said

  1445. to them,

  1446. receive the

  1447. Holy Spirit,

  1448. if you

  1449. forgive the

  1450. sins of

  1451. any,

  1452. they are

  1453. forgiven,

  1454. if you

  1455. withhold the

  1456. forgiveness

  1457. from any,

  1458. it will be

  1459. withheld,

  1460. and so,

  1461. let's walk

  1462. through this

  1463. quickly together,

  1464. so these

  1465. fearful

  1466. disciples,

  1467. like they

  1468. ran away,

  1469. when Jesus

  1470. was arrested,

  1471. they fled

  1472. the scene

  1473. and left

  1474. Jesus to

  1475. be alone,

  1476. to face

  1477. all of

  1478. this alone,

  1479. it says

  1480. that they

  1481. ran and

  1482. fled,

  1483. they forsook

  1484. him in

  1485. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1486. 26,

  1487. so they

  1488. were not

  1489. brave,

  1490. they were

  1491. weak,

  1492. their faith

  1493. was weak,

  1494. let's not

  1495. be quick to

  1496. judge,

  1497. because we

  1498. don't know

  1499. what we

  1500. would have

  1501. done,

  1502. we hope

  1503. that we

  1504. would have

  1505. stuck with

  1506. Christ,

  1507. but don't

  1508. be too

  1509. quick to

  1510. judge the

  1511. disciples who

  1512. ran away

  1513. in fear

  1514. of their

  1515. lives,

  1516. but they're

  1517. hiding behind

  1518. locked doors,

  1519. feeling afraid,

  1520. confused,

  1521. bewildered,

  1522. and especially

  1523. after hearing

  1524. Mary,

  1525. like what

  1526. is going

  1527. on?

  1528. So they're

  1529. traumatized,

  1530. and they're

  1531. fearful of

  1532. what's

  1533. happened,

  1534. but Jesus

  1535. appears to

  1536. them,

  1537. I love that,

  1538. just sort

  1539. of behind

  1540. the locked

  1541. doors,

  1542. he just

  1543. sort of

  1544. appears,

  1545. standing

  1546. there,

  1547. talking to

  1548. them,

  1549. and he

  1550. says,

  1551. peace,

  1552. be with

  1553. you,

  1554. be still,

  1555. rest

  1556. easy,

  1557. all is

  1558. well,

  1559. because I

  1560. mean,

  1561. obviously they

  1562. would have

  1563. been frightened,

  1564. they would

  1565. have been

  1566. scared,

  1567. as would

  1568. all of

  1569. us if

  1570. we saw

  1571. something so

  1572. supernatural,

  1573. because it

  1574. really is

  1575. me,

  1576. I'm alive,

  1577. touch me,

  1578. look,

  1579. see my

  1580. hands and

  1581. my feet,

  1582. and he

  1583. reminds them

  1584. of the

  1585. events of

  1586. the cross,

  1587. that he

  1588. was the

  1589. crucified

  1590. sacrifice,

  1591. but now he

  1592. is the

  1593. risen Lord,

  1594. that he

  1595. has overcome

  1596. the world

  1597. and secured

  1598. their place

  1599. in heaven,

  1600. and then he

  1601. says to

  1602. them,

  1603. he breathes

  1604. on them,

  1605. it says,

  1606. receive the

  1607. Holy Spirit,

  1608. now we

  1609. know if we

  1610. read the

  1611. book of

  1612. Acts,

  1613. the Holy

  1614. Spirit came

  1615. on them

  1616. at Pentecost,

  1617. almost 40

  1618. days later,

  1619. so this is

  1620. best understood

  1621. as a kind

  1622. of active

  1623. parable

  1624. pointing

  1625. forward

  1626. to the

  1627. full

  1628. endowment

  1629. of the

  1630. Holy Spirit,

  1631. the pledge

  1632. of the

  1633. Spirit,

  1634. Spirit,

  1635. and then

  1636. lastly,

  1637. in this

  1638. section,

  1639. he commissions

  1640. them,

  1641. he says,

  1642. the Father

  1643. sends me,

  1644. so I

  1645. now am

  1646. sending

  1647. you to

  1648. go out

  1649. into this

  1650. dark,

  1651. dying world

  1652. and to

  1653. proclaim the

  1654. message of

  1655. forgiveness

  1656. of sins

  1657. and reconciliation

  1658. with God

  1659. through the

  1660. Savior.

  1661. The message

  1662. of the

  1663. gospel has

  1664. to go

  1665. forth to

  1666. all ethnos,

  1667. all nations,

  1668. all peoples,

  1669. and so

  1670. watch with

  1671. great anticipation

  1672. in the

  1673. years,

  1674. to come

  1675. to see

  1676. how God

  1677. is going

  1678. to reach

  1679. the unreached

  1680. of the

  1681. world.

  1682. And though

  1683. the initial

  1684. establishment of

  1685. the church

  1686. fell to the

  1687. apostles,

  1688. I hope that

  1689. you feel

  1690. that weight

  1691. to advance

  1692. the name

  1693. of Christ,

  1694. the kingdom

  1695. of Christ,

  1696. no matter

  1697. where you

  1698. are in

  1699. your life

  1700. to those

  1701. who are

  1702. around you.

  1703. It continues

  1704. to this

  1705. day.

  1706. So then

  1707. we'll wrap

  1708. it up,

  1709. we'll keep

  1710. going in

  1711. verse 24

  1712. and we'll

  1713. land the

  1714. plane.

  1715. Can't leave

  1716. this out.

  1717. Now Thomas,

  1718. one of the

  1719. twelve,

  1720. called the

  1721. twin,

  1722. was not

  1723. with them

  1724. when Jesus

  1725. came.

  1726. So the

  1727. other disciples

  1728. told him,

  1729. we have

  1730. seen the

  1731. Lord,

  1732. but he

  1733. said to

  1734. them,

  1735. unless I

  1736. see his

  1737. hands in

  1738. the mark

  1739. of the

  1740. nails,

  1741. and place

  1742. my finger

  1743. into the

  1744. mark of

  1745. the nails,

  1746. and place

  1747. my hand

  1748. into his

  1749. side,

  1750. I will

  1751. never believe.

  1752. That might

  1753. be a lot

  1754. of us

  1755. saying that.

  1756. eight

  1757. days later,

  1758. his

  1759. disciples

  1760. were

  1761. again

  1762. inside,

  1763. and

  1764. Thomas

  1765. was

  1766. with

  1767. them.

  1768. Although

  1769. the doors

  1770. were

  1771. locked,

  1772. Jesus

  1773. came and

  1774. stood among

  1775. them and

  1776. said,

  1777. peace be

  1778. with you.

  1779. And then

  1780. he said to

  1781. Thomas,

  1782. put your

  1783. finger here

  1784. and see

  1785. my hands.

  1786. Put out

  1787. your hand

  1788. and place

  1789. it in

  1790. my side.

  1791. Do not

  1792. disbelieve,

  1793. but believe.

  1794. And

  1795. Thomas

  1796. answered

  1797. him,

  1798. my

  1799. Lord

  1800. and

  1801. my

  1802. God.

  1803. Jesus

  1804. said to

  1805. him,

  1806. have

  1807. you

  1808. believed

  1809. because

  1810. you

  1811. have

  1812. seen

  1813. me?

  1814. Blessed

  1815. are

  1816. those

  1817. who

  1818. have

  1819. not

  1820. seen

  1821. and

  1822. yet

  1823. have

  1824. believed.

  1825. Man,

  1826. eight

  1827. days

  1828. later,

  1829. right,

  1830. Thomas

  1831. was like,

  1832. I don't

  1833. buy it,

  1834. guys,

  1835. unless I

  1836. can see

  1837. him and

  1838. touch

  1839. him,

  1840. as

  1841. y'all

  1842. did.

  1843. He

  1844. probably

  1845. kicked

  1846. himself.

  1847. Imagine

  1848. like an

  1849. event you

  1850. would not

  1851. want to

  1852. miss out

  1853. on,

  1854. like,

  1855. I

  1856. missed

  1857. it.

  1858. So

  1859. Jesus

  1860. appears

  1861. to

  1862. him,

  1863. especially,

  1864. right,

  1865. and shows

  1866. him.

  1867. Thomas

  1868. had

  1869. known to

  1870. have been

  1871. loyal,

  1872. but

  1873. sometimes

  1874. pessimistic.

  1875. And

  1876. Jesus

  1877. doesn't

  1878. rebuke

  1879. him.

  1880. He

  1881. doesn't

  1882. like,

  1883. you

  1884. know,

  1885. to

  1886. say,

  1887. come

  1888. on,

  1889. Thomas.

  1890. He

  1891. just

  1892. simply,

  1893. humbly

  1894. shows

  1895. him

  1896. compassion

  1897. and

  1898. offers

  1899. proof

  1900. of

  1901. his

  1902. resurrection.

  1903. And

  1904. so

  1905. Thomas'

  1906. response

  1907. is

  1908. astounding.

  1909. what other

  1910. response

  1911. could you

  1912. have to

  1913. someone who

  1914. has risen

  1915. from the

  1916. dead?

  1917. He

  1918. understood

  1919. more.

  1920. He's

  1921. standing,

  1922. God in

  1923. flesh,

  1924. standing right

  1925. in front of

  1926. him,

  1927. the crucified

  1928. Christ,

  1929. but now

  1930. the risen

  1931. Lord.

  1932. And his

  1933. response is,

  1934. my Lord

  1935. and my

  1936. God,

  1937. declares

  1938. that Jesus,

  1939. the man in

  1940. front of him,

  1941. is divine,

  1942. risen from

  1943. the dead.

  1944. God.

  1945. And so

  1946. does a

  1947. passage like

  1948. this just

  1949. give you

  1950. chills?

  1951. Does it

  1952. make you

  1953. joyful and

  1954. inspire hope?

  1955. Does it

  1956. terrify you,

  1957. fearful?

  1958. What

  1959. Jesus say

  1960. to you

  1961. today,

  1962. why are

  1963. you

  1964. crying?

  1965. Stop

  1966. your

  1967. doubting

  1968. and

  1969. believe.

  1970. Because

  1971. a lot

  1972. of us

  1973. live life

  1974. in that

  1975. sort of

  1976. defeat,

  1977. as if

  1978. Jesus

  1979. had just

  1980. stayed

  1981. in the

  1982. tomb.

  1983. So

  1984. how does

  1985. this

  1986. impact

  1987. us?

  1988. We

  1989. learn

  1990. something

  1991. very

  1992. important

  1993. here

  1994. about

  1995. the

  1996. nature

  1997. of

  1998. faith.

  1999. We've

  2000. been

  2001. taught

  2002. by

  2003. society

  2004. that

  2005. seeing

  2006. is

  2007. believing.

  2008. Very

  2009. clearly

  2010. Jesus

  2011. says

  2012. that

  2013. it

  2014. is

  2015. not.

  2016. You

  2017. don't

  2018. have

  2019. to

  2020. see

  2021. Jesus

  2022. in

  2023. the

  2024. flesh

  2025. to

  2026. believe

  2027. in

  2028. him.

  2029. None

  2030. of

  2031. us

  2032. have.

  2033. Jesus

  2034. states

  2035. that

  2036. just

  2037. seeing

  2038. him

  2039. isn't

  2040. necessary

  2041. for

  2042. belief,

  2043. but

  2044. faith

  2045. in

  2046. God

  2047. doesn't

  2048. depend

  2049. on

  2050. seeing

  2051. him,

  2052. but

  2053. trusting

  2054. !

  2055. in

  2056. this

  2057. person

  2058. and

  2059. his

  2060. work

  2061. for

  2062. our

  2063. behalf

  2064. by

  2065. faith

  2066. is

  2067. sufficient

  2068. for

  2069. salvation.

  2070. And so

  2071. Peter wrote

  2072. in 1 Peter 1

    1 Peter 1:8

  2073. verse 8,

  2074. so I

  2075. imagine that

  2076. Peter remembers

  2077. this scene

  2078. and he's

  2079. like using

  2080. it as a

  2081. reference.

  2082. He remembers

  2083. what Jesus

  2084. told Thomas.

  2085. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:8

  2086. chapter 1

  2087. verse 8,

  2088. though you

  2089. have not

  2090. seen

  2091. him,

  2092. you

  2093. love

  2094. him.

  2095. Though

  2096. you

  2097. do not

  2098. see

  2099. him

  2100. now,

  2101. you

  2102. believe

  2103. in

  2104. him

  2105. and

  2106. rejoice

  2107. with

  2108. the

  2109. joy

  2110. that

  2111. is

  2112. inexpressible

  2113. and

  2114. filled

  2115. with

  2116. glory,

  2117. obtaining

  2118. the

  2119. outcome

  2120. of your

  2121. faith,

  2122. the

  2123. salvation

  2124. of

  2125. your

  2126. souls.

  2127. So,

  2128. blessed

  2129. are those

  2130. who have

  2131. not

  2132. seen

  2133. me,

  2134. Jesus

  2135. says,

  2136. and yet

  2137. will

  2138. believe.

  2139. In 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  2140. Corinthians

  2141. chapter 15,

  2142. I'll read

  2143. you just

  2144. a section

  2145. of this,

  2146. but Jesus

  2147. appeared

  2148. to many

  2149. people

  2150. other than

  2151. the disciples,

  2152. all according

  2153. to the

  2154. scriptures,

  2155. all according

  2156. to the

  2157. fulfillment

  2158. of what

  2159. God had

  2160. spoken

  2161. hundreds

  2162. and hundreds

  2163. of years

  2164. earlier.

  2165. Paul wrote

  2166. Corinthians

  2167. 15

  2168. verse 3,

  2169. For I

  2170. delivered

  2171. to you

  2172. as first

  2173. importance

  2174. what I

  2175. also

  2176. received,

  2177. that Christ

  2178. died

  2179. for our

  2180. sins

  2181. in

  2182. accordance

  2183. with

  2184. the

  2185. scriptures,

  2186. that he

  2187. was

  2188. buried

  2189. and then

  2190. he

  2191. was

  2192. raised

  2193. on

  2194. the

  2195. third

  2196. day

  2197. according

  2198. to

  2199. the

  2200. scriptures,

  2201. that he

  2202. appeared

  2203. to Cephas,

  2204. then to

  2205. the twelve,

  2206. then he

  2207. appeared to

  2208. more than

  2209. five hundred

  2210. brothers

  2211. at one

  2212. time,

  2213. most of

  2214. whom are

  2215. still alive,

  2216. though some

  2217. have fallen

  2218. asleep,

  2219. then he

  2220. appeared to

  2221. James,

  2222. then to

  2223. all the

  2224. apostles,

  2225. and last

  2226. of all,

  2227. as to

  2228. one untimely

  2229. born,

  2230. he also

  2231. appeared

  2232. to

  2233. me.

  2234. So,

  2235. amazingly,

  2236. back in

  2237. this day,

  2238. he says he

  2239. appeared to

  2240. all these

  2241. people,

  2242. and a lot

  2243. of them

  2244. are still

  2245. alive,

  2246. go ask

  2247. them,

  2248. they saw

  2249. him,

  2250. and then

  2251. Paul clues

  2252. himself at

  2253. the very

  2254. end,

  2255. and then

  2256. finally he

  2257. appeared to

  2258. me on

  2259. the Damascus

  2260. road,

  2261. right?

  2262. So,

  2263. some quick

  2264. application,

  2265. and then we'll

  2266. wrap it up.

  2267. Each one of

  2268. these could be

  2269. their own

  2270. sermon,

  2271. but I'll

  2272. wrap it up

  2273. really

  2274. quickly,

  2275. but because

  2276. Jesus is

  2277. alive,

  2278. we can be

  2279. sure of

  2280. our eternal

  2281. life.

  2282. Every now

  2283. and then a

  2284. Bible writer

  2285. may tell

  2286. you why

  2287. they wrote

  2288. the book.

  2289. At the end,

  2290. look at

  2291. chapter 20,

  2292. verse 30.

  2293. Now Jesus

  2294. did many

  2295. other signs

  2296. in the

  2297. presence of

  2298. the disciples,

  2299. which are

  2300. not written

  2301. in this

  2302. book,

  2303. but these

  2304. are written

  2305. so that you

  2306. may believe

  2307. that Jesus

  2308. is the

  2309. Christ,

  2310. the Son

  2311. of God,

  2312. and that

  2313. by believing

  2314. you may

  2315. have life

  2316. in His

  2317. name.

  2318. So does

  2319. the thought

  2320. of death

  2321. scare you?

  2322. Does the

  2323. consequences,

  2324. the thought

  2325. of facing

  2326. the consequences

  2327. of your

  2328. own sin

  2329. frighten

  2330. you?

  2331. You can

  2332. know by

  2333. believing

  2334. and throwing

  2335. your life

  2336. completely

  2337. in the

  2338. risen Son

  2339. of God

  2340. that He

  2341. will save

  2342. you,

  2343. He will

  2344. deliver

  2345. you.

  2346. It says

  2347. He will

  2348. give you

  2349. eternal

  2350. life.

  2351. If you

  2352. believe in

  2353. His

  2354. crucifixion,

  2355. His

  2356. paying the

  2357. price for

  2358. your sin.

  2359. So that's

  2360. the hope

  2361. we have

  2362. when we

  2363. pass away

  2364. that we

  2365. will be

  2366. raised.

  2367. Right?

  2368. Jesus

  2369. said around

  2370. the death

  2371. of Lazarus,

  2372. I am

  2373. the resurrection

  2374. and the

  2375. life.

  2376. Whoever

  2377. believes in

  2378. Me,

  2379. though he

  2380. die,

  2381. yet shall

  2382. he live.

  2383. And everyone

  2384. who lives

  2385. and believes

  2386. in Me

  2387. shall never

  2388. die.

  2389. Do you

  2390. believe this?

  2391. So because

  2392. of a living

  2393. Savior,

  2394. we can

  2395. taunt

  2396. death.

  2397. Saying as

  2398. it says in

  2399. 1 Corinthians

  2400. 15,

  2401. death is

  2402. swallowed up

  2403. in victory.

  2404. Oh death,

  2405. where is

  2406. your victory?

  2407. Oh death,

  2408. where is

  2409. your sting?

  2410. Secondly,

  2411. you can be

  2412. assured that

  2413. Christ will

  2414. return.

  2415. He has

  2416. fulfilled His

  2417. word so

  2418. far,

  2419. every bit

  2420. of what He

  2421. said.

  2422. The entire

  2423. New Testament

  2424. entirely depends

  2425. on the

  2426. assumption that

  2427. Jesus is

  2428. alive,

  2429. living,

  2430. reigning at the

  2431. right hand of

  2432. the Father

  2433. and that

  2434. He one

  2435. day will

  2436. return.

  2437. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4:14–17

  2438. chapter 4

  2439. verse 14

  2440. through 17

  2441. mentions that

  2442. because Jesus

  2443. is risen,

  2444. He will

  2445. return.

  2446. And when He

  2447. comes back,

  2448. He's coming

  2449. back to save

  2450. those who

  2451. have hoped

  2452. in Him

  2453. and to

  2454. judge those

  2455. who have

  2456. rejected Him.

  2457. To judge

  2458. and to make

  2459. war.

  2460. It says that

  2461. He will

  2462. judge the

  2463. world and

  2464. righteousness

  2465. in Acts

  2466. 17.

  2467. So that

  2468. gives us

  2469. authority

  2470. unlike anyone

  2471. else.

  2472. Like why?

  2473. Why is

  2474. Jesus a big

  2475. deal?

  2476. Because He's

  2477. alive,

  2478. He's

  2479. returning,

  2480. and you

  2481. will have

  2482. to reckon

  2483. with Him

  2484. one day,

  2485. either as

  2486. His friend

  2487. on His

  2488. terms or

  2489. enemies on

  2490. your terms.

  2491. Then lastly,

  2492. because He

  2493. lives,

  2494. because of

  2495. the resurrection,

  2496. we can

  2497. possess as

  2498. followers of

  2499. Christ the

  2500. greatest

  2501. motivation for

  2502. living.

  2503. You don't

  2504. have to spend

  2505. your days and

  2506. years searching

  2507. for the right

  2508. thing to live

  2509. your life for.

  2510. All things

  2511. are in vain.

  2512. All things

  2513. will perish

  2514. and fail.

  2515. But if we

  2516. wrap up our

  2517. whole life in

  2518. following the

  2519. living Christ,

  2520. we can even

  2521. recklessly throw

  2522. our lives away

  2523. for Christ.

  2524. And it will

  2525. not be in

  2526. vain.

  2527. Right?

  2528. We can live

  2529. for Him,

  2530. sharing the

  2531. gospel with

  2532. the dark

  2533. and dying

  2534. world around

  2535. us,

  2536. because we

  2537. live for

  2538. an unconquerable

  2539. immortal.

  2540. Savior.

  2541. You don't

  2542. have to live

  2543. your life

  2544. filled and

  2545. paralyzed with

  2546. fear,

  2547. anxiety,

  2548. depression.

  2549. You don't

  2550. have to,

  2551. because Christ

  2552. is alive.

  2553. Think about

  2554. this.

  2555. All the

  2556. disciples ran.

  2557. They were

  2558. afraid of

  2559. death.

  2560. They were

  2561. afraid of

  2562. facing punishment.

  2563. What happened?

  2564. You know,

  2565. we all know

  2566. how most of

  2567. them died.

  2568. They all

  2569. died martyrs.

  2570. What changed

  2571. them?

  2572. What made

  2573. them into

  2574. this fearless

  2575. band of

  2576. followers who

  2577. declared Christ

  2578. boldly,

  2579. almost a

  2580. complete 180

  2581. in a short

  2582. amount of

  2583. time.

  2584. They knew

  2585. that Jesus

  2586. was living,

  2587. and they

  2588. were happy

  2589. to live and

  2590. die for

  2591. Him.

  2592. Bold witnesses.

  2593. So in

  2594. other words,

  2595. in one of my

  2596. own fathers and

  2597. one of my

  2598. grandfathers'

  2599. favorite old

  2600. hymns,

  2601. because He

  2602. lives, I

  2603. can face

  2604. tomorrow.

  2605. Because He

  2606. lives, all

  2607. fear is

  2608. gone.

  2609. Because I

  2610. know He

  2611. holds the

  2612. future.

  2613. life is

  2614. worth living

  2615. just because

  2616. He lives.

  2617. So, let's

  2618. pray together.

  2619. Let's go.
