  1. All right, as a little bit of an intro, in prepping for the sermon, I began to think a little bit and realize that there are probably a number of people here who actually don't really know who I am.

  2. So for anybody in that boat, my name is Caleb Waters. I've been here at CFC since fall of 2012.

  3. I ended up here just as like a large chunk of us have of initially connecting through college Bible study while studying at what that time was in GCSU.

  4. I met my wife at the new members class here, and we both got education degrees from UNG. Both of us got jobs in Forsyth County.

  5. We lived in a camper in Cleveland for a while right when we got married and we bought a house in Dahlonega.

  6. Now we have a couple of boys, Everett, who is almost two, and Isaac, who is almost three months old.

  7. I served as an elder here from really, really, really early 2020 until last summer when I stepped down so that, as Nathan mentioned earlier, we could prep for the move.

  8. We're turning our house up here into an Airbnb. I had to find a new teaching job down there, that kind of thing.

  9. Some of you who knew the details of that have started to ask us, like, has the plan changed?

  10. Like, are y'all actually still moving? Y'all are still here?

  11. And it's really just that we are super planners, and so the move is finally here, about three and a half weeks away, I guess.

  12. But it feels like we're moving home, but moving away from home.

  13. This church has been our family for the last over ten years now.

  14. We love you guys, and it's really, really hard to leave.

  15. And anyway, I just wanted to say all of that for anybody who might have gotten here in the last year or so,

  16. and I feel like I haven't been in the stage as much in that last little bit.

  17. All right, let's get to the word this morning.

  18. Nathan told me I could preach anything that I wanted to,

  19. and that sometimes is a really hard thing to then narrow down.

  20. But as I reflected just back along my time at CFC, I couldn't get away from one idea,

  21. and so that's what we're going to focus on this morning.

  22. So y'all turn with me to John 13.

  23. John 13.

  24. Alex Kohler read a chunk of this text last Sunday in the Lord's Supper service,

  25. and I hope because of that the context will feel familiar to some of us.

  26. I do want to read a very large chunk of this chapter, but don't be afraid.

  27. We are not going to dig into every single part of it.

  28. I really just want to focus on two verses,

  29. but I think the context is so important that we should read a lot of it.

  30. And those verses that we'll particularly be focusing on are verses 34 and 35.

  31. All right.

  32. Let's go ahead and read John chapter 13, starting all the way in verse 1.

    John 13 chapter mention

  33. Now before the feast of the Passover,

  34. when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father,

  35. having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

  36. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot,

  37. Simon's son, to betray him,

  38. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands,

  39. and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

  40. rose from supper.

  41. He laid aside his outer garments and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.

  42. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet

  43. and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  44. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,

  45. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  46. Jesus answered him,

  47. What I am doing you do not understand now,

  48. but afterward you will understand.

  49. Peter said to him,

  50. You shall never wash my feet.

  51. Jesus answered him,

  52. If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.

  53. Simon Peter said to him,

  54. Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

  55. Jesus said to him,

  56. The one who has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet,

  57. but is completely clean.

  58. And you are clean, but not every one of you.

  59. For he knew who was to betray him.

  60. That was why he said,

  61. Not all of you are clean.

  62. When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments

  63. and resumed his place,

  64. he said to them,

  65. Do you understand what I have done to you?

  66. You call me teacher and Lord,

  67. and you are right, for so I am.

  68. If I then, your Lord and teacher,

  69. have washed your feet,

  70. you also ought to wash one another's feet.

  71. For I have given you an example

  72. that you also should do just as I have done to you.

  73. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  74. a servant is not greater than his master,

  75. nor is a messenger greater than he who sent him.

  76. If you know these things,

  77. blessed are you if you do them.

  78. I am not speaking of all of you.

  79. I know whom I have chosen,

  80. but the scripture will be fulfilled.

  81. He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.

  82. I am telling you this now before it takes place,

  83. that when it does take place,

  84. you may believe that I am he.

  85. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  86. whoever receives the one I send,

  87. receives me,

  88. and whoever receives me,

  89. receives the one who sent me.

  90. After saying these things,

  91. Jesus was troubled in his spirit and testified,

  92. truly, truly, I say to you,

  93. one of you will betray me.

  94. The disciples looked at one another,

  95. uncertain of whom he spoke.

  96. One of his disciples,

  97. whom Jesus loved,

  98. was reclining at table at Jesus' side.

  99. So Simon Peter motioned to him

  100. to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking.

  101. So that disciple,

  102. leaning back against Jesus,

  103. said to him,

  104. Lord, who is it?

  105. Jesus answered,

  106. it is he whom I will give

  107. this morsel of bread

  108. when I have dipped it.

  109. So when he had dipped the morsel,

  110. he gave it to Judas,

  111. the son of Simon Iscariot.

  112. Then after he had taken the morsel,

  113. Satan entered into him.

  114. Jesus said to him,

  115. what you are going to do,

  116. do quickly.

  117. Now, no one at the table

  118. knew why he said this to him.

  119. Some thought that

  120. because Jesus had the money bag,

  121. Jesus was telling him,

  122. buy what we need for the feast

  123. or that he should give something

  124. to the poor.

  125. So after receiving

  126. the morsel of bread,

  127. he immediately went out

  128. and it was night.

  129. When he had gone out,

  130. Jesus said,

  131. now is the son of man glorified

  132. and God is glorified in him.

  133. If God is glorified in him,

  134. God will also glorify him

  135. in himself

  136. and glorify him at once.

  137. Little children,

  138. yet a little while

  139. I am with you.

  140. He will seek me

  141. and just as I said to the Jews,

  142. so now I also say to you,

  143. where I am going,

  144. you cannot come.

  145. A new commandment

  146. I give to you,

  147. that you love one another

  148. just as I have loved you,

  149. you also are to love one another.

  150. By this,

  151. all people will know

  152. that you are my disciples

  153. if you have love

  154. for one another.

  155. All right.

  156. That's our text for this morning.

  157. I know that it's

  158. heavy and intense.

  159. All right,

  160. that's where we're at.

  161. So let's talk about the context

  162. first for a little bit

  163. and then we'll get into

  164. the main part of the sermon.

  165. So something that's really important

  166. to note at the beginning

  167. of this passage

  168. is that very early in it,

  169. we see that this is recorded

  170. at a time

  171. when Jesus knows

  172. that his time

  173. is coming short.

  174. It's become clear to him

  175. that he doesn't have

  176. much time left

  177. in this world,

  178. that he'll soon be sold

  179. to authorities,

  180. he'll ultimately be condemned

  181. and put to death

  182. and then be raised.

  183. And I think it's important

  184. to note John specifically

  185. pointing this out here

  186. in verse one,

  187. that Jesus,

  188. even as he knew

  189. his time was coming soon

  190. to be put to death,

  191. that he didn't try

  192. to hide out.

  193. He didn't keep to himself

  194. all the time,

  195. but what does it say?

  196. He loved his disciples

  197. to the very end.

  198. Jesus did not choose

  199. to make a decision

  200. that would bring comfort

  201. or safety

  202. in his last little bit

  203. of time here on this earth,

  204. but instead he chose

  205. to love his disciples,

  206. those who were with him

  207. to the very end.

  208. And so that's our context here.

  209. He's having a meal

  210. with his disciples.

  211. He decides to wash

  212. their feet.

  213. And it becomes very clear

  214. that this washing of feet

  215. is very significant,

  216. both in the minds

  217. of the disciples

  218. and in Jesus' mind.

  219. And so a couple ways

  220. we can see that.

  221. Firstly, we see some insight

  222. to what the disciples

  223. are thinking,

  224. how they are reacting

  225. to this whole scenario.

  226. And as is very often

  227. typical in the Gospels,

  228. we see exactly

  229. what Peter had to say

  230. about it.

  231. And so let's read

  232. verse 5 through verse 11

  233. one more time.

  234. It says,

  235. Then he poured water

  236. into a basin

  237. and began to wash

  238. the disciples' feet

  239. and to wipe them

  240. with the towel

  241. that was wrapped around him.

  242. He came to Simon Peter

  243. who said to him,

  244. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  245. Jesus answered him,

  246. What I'm doing

  247. you do not understand now,

  248. but afterward

  249. you will understand.

  250. Peter said to him,

  251. You shall never

  252. wash my feet.

  253. Jesus answered him,

  254. If I do not wash you,

  255. you have no share with me.

  256. Simon Peter said to him,

  257. Lord, not my feet only,

  258. but also my hands

  259. and my head.

  260. Jesus said to him,

  261. The one who has bathed

  262. does not need to wash

  263. except for his feet,

  264. but is completely clean.

  265. And you are clean,

  266. but not every one of you,

  267. for he knew

  268. who was to betray him.

  269. That was why he said,

  270. Not all of you are clean.

  271. So Jesus is going around

  272. watching the disciples' feet

  273. and Peter speaks up.

  274. He's clearly embarrassed,

  275. maybe a bit ashamed

  276. that his teacher,

  277. the one he's followed

  278. for so long,

  279. the one who he has begun

  280. to understand

  281. and will soon fully understand

  282. that is the very Son of God.

  283. He's ashamed that

  284. our Lord Jesus

  285. is washing his feet.

  286. And so he starts saying,

  287. Lord, you're never going

  288. to wash my feet.

  289. And he seems a little bit

  290. taken aback,

  291. maybe startled slightly

  292. by what the Lord's response is.

  293. That he will not have

  294. any share with him

  295. if he is not washed.

  296. And Peter's thoughts change.

  297. We can see that clear change there.

  298. He says,

  299. Wash all of me,

  300. of course,

  301. I want to share with you.

  302. Peter didn't fully understand here.

  303. Peter didn't get

  304. that the Lord was using this

  305. as a picture of his blood

  306. that was going to be shed

  307. on their behalf.

  308. Sure, he was starting

  309. to catch on.

  310. He was getting there,

  311. but he didn't quite get

  312. that full picture yet.

  313. And the Lord says this

  314. to Peter

  315. and to all of the disciples here.

  316. You don't quite get this now,

  317. but afterwards,

  318. speaking there of his death,

  319. his resurrection,

  320. you will understand it.

  321. And so,

  322. after Peter's response,

  323. we hear some more

  324. from the Lord.

  325. Let's look at 12 through 17 again.

  326. We're going to be saturated

  327. in the scripture.

  328. Let's not be afraid of it.

  329. When he had washed their feet

  330. and put on his outer garments

  331. and resumed his place,

  332. he said to them,

  333. Do you understand

  334. what I have done to you?

  335. You call me teacher and Lord,

  336. and you are right,

  337. for so I am.

  338. If I then,

  339. your Lord and teacher,

  340. have washed your feet,

  341. you also ought to wash

  342. one another's feet.

  343. For I have given you an example

  344. that you also should do

  345. just as I have done to you.

  346. Truly, truly,

  347. I say to you,

  348. a servant is not greater

  349. than his master,

  350. nor is a messenger

  351. greater than the one

  352. who sent him.

  353. If you know these things,

  354. blessed are you

  355. if you do them.

  356. And so,

  357. we get a little bit more

  358. perspective of what

  359. this foot washing

  360. is all about.

  361. It was to be a picture

  362. to the disciples

  363. that they clearly saw

  364. that this was like

  365. a lowly,

  366. gross maybe,

  367. task,

  368. task,

  369. and yet their teacher

  370. and Lord,

  371. he is partaking in it

  372. for them.

  373. And Jesus makes

  374. the argument then

  375. that is a similar

  376. argument to what we'll see

  377. in our main couple

  378. of verses

  379. that we'll be focusing on,

  380. that as they see

  381. their teacher

  382. and their Lord

  383. partaking in the

  384. lowliest of service,

  385. that they should too.

  386. They should serve

  387. one another.

  388. They should follow

  389. the example

  390. of their teacher

  391. and their Lord.

  392. The Lord reminds them

  393. that a servant

  394. should not expect

  395. to do things differently

  396. than their master.

  397. If anything,

  398. he should expect

  399. to have to do

  400. harder work.

  401. And when they see

  402. their teacher

  403. partaking in the service,

  404. they should be eager

  405. to do the same thing.

  406. Now,

  407. after these verses,

  408. we see lots

  409. about Jesus' betrayal.

  410. We'll talk about

  411. that a little bit,

  412. but for now,

  413. with our context set up,

  414. let's get to

  415. verses 33 to 35.

  416. Remember that we

  417. see that Jesus

  418. knew that his time

  419. was coming soon.

  420. Then we saw him

  421. saying the disciples

  422. would understand

  423. an idea more

  424. fully afterward,

  425. speaking of after

  426. his death,

  427. his resurrection.

  428. And then in

  429. verse 33,

  430. that will become

  431. even more clear.

  432. So,

  433. let's read

  434. 33 to 35

  435. one more time.

  436. Little children,

  437. yet a little while

  438. I am with you.

  439. You will seek me,

  440. and just as I said

  441. to the Jews,

  442. so now I also say

  443. to you,

  444. where I am going,

  445. you cannot come.

  446. A new commandment

  447. I give to you,

  448. that you love

  449. one another.

  450. just as I have

  451. loved you,

  452. you also are

  453. to love one another.

  454. By this,

  455. all people will know

  456. that you are my

  457. disciples,

  458. if you have love

  459. for one another.

  460. And so Jesus,

  461. again,

  462. so many times

  463. in this passage,

  464. he has pointed out

  465. that he's not going

  466. to be with them

  467. much longer.

  468. And pretty interestingly,

  469. he gives them

  470. this new command

  471. right after that

  472. statement.

  473. It's almost as if

  474. he's saying,

  475. when I'm gone,

  476. be ready to do

  477. this work.

  478. He commands him

  479. to follow this

  480. in his physical absence.

  481. And with that in mind,

  482. let's actually give

  483. some structure

  484. to the rest of the sermon.

  485. I think I gave

  486. a lot of intro

  487. this morning.

  488. There's going to be

  489. five points,

  490. and here they are.

  491. The first one will be

  492. the command itself.

  493. The command itself.

  494. The second one will be

  495. the newness

  496. of the command.

  497. The newness

  498. of the command.

  499. Third,

  500. the impossibility

  501. and possibility

  502. of the command.

  503. Four,

  504. some examples

  505. of the command.

  506. And number five,

  507. are we following

  508. the command?

  509. So let's get into it.

  510. So let's talk about

  511. the command itself.

  512. So it's actually

  513. pretty simple

  514. to understand.

  515. Verse 34 just says,

  516. we are to love

  517. one another,

  518. and then it clarifies

  519. how are we

  520. to love one another?

  521. We are to love

  522. one another

  523. with the very same love

  524. that Christ

  525. has loved us with.

  526. And if that amount

  527. of love

  528. is not startling

  529. to us,

  530. it should be.

  531. We should remember

  532. some context

  533. yet again here.

  534. Verse 33,

  535. little children,

  536. yet a little while

  537. I am with you,

  538. you will seek me,

  539. and just as I said

  540. to the Jews,

  541. so now I also say

  542. to you,

  543. where I'm going,

  544. you can't come.

  545. Let's remind

  546. each other

  547. that all the way

  548. up to that,

  549. John is making

  550. it very clear

  551. that Jesus knows

  552. that his time

  553. is coming soon.

  554. And so with that

  555. context in mind,

  556. that amplifies this.

  557. Because what is coming?

  558. Where is he going?

  559. Our Lord knows

  560. that he's about

  561. to die.

  562. He knows that he's

  563. about to be wrongfully

  564. accused and tried,

  565. be put to death.

  566. But he also knows

  567. something else,

  568. that his death

  569. will atone for the sins

  570. of all those

  571. who will trust in him.

  572. He knows that these

  573. disciples are included

  574. in that.

  575. We saw him referencing

  576. that very clearly

  577. right before these verses.

  578. So it's something

  579. I think we all understand.

  580. We all know it.

  581. But let's track

  582. with that logic

  583. just to make sure

  584. we're all on the same page

  585. with what is being

  586. talked about here.

  587. If we are called

  588. to love

  589. as he has loved

  590. the disciples

  591. and us

  592. for that matter.

  593. And with the context here,

  594. we can begin

  595. to clearly see

  596. that he's speaking

  597. of his death

  598. for the disciples

  599. and for us.

  600. And so with that,

  601. what is our calling?

  602. We're called

  603. to give up

  604. our very life

  605. for one another.

  606. We're called

  607. to give up

  608. our very life

  609. for one another.

  610. And that gets us

  611. to the next point.

  612. And these next couple points

  613. will be where we spend

  614. the majority

  615. of our time

  616. this morning.

  617. That'll be the newness

  618. of the command.

  619. The newness

  620. of the command.

  621. The Lord calls it

  622. a new commandment here.

  623. If he's calling it new,

  624. we might be a bit confused

  625. as to what

  626. is really new about it.

  627. How is it different

  628. from all of the different

  629. ways we've heard

  630. loving our neighbor

  631. be talked about before?

  632. You might think

  633. of passages

  634. way in the Old Testament.

  635. Think about

  636. Leviticus 19,

    Leviticus 19:18

  637. verse 18.

  638. You shall not

  639. take vengeance

  640. or bear a grudge

  641. against the sons

  642. of your own people,

  643. but you shall love

  644. your neighbor as yourself.

  645. I am the Lord.

  646. If your name is Zach,

  647. you might think

  648. of Jesus teaching

  649. in the Sermon on the Mount

  650. where Jesus amplifies

  651. the importance

  652. of even loving

  653. our enemies.

  654. Takes it a step

  655. further, right?

  656. You might think

  657. of plenty of passages

  658. in Paul's letters

  659. that, yes,

  660. are coming after this,

  661. but poor were instructed

  662. to love others well.

  663. My point in saying

  664. all of that

  665. is this is clear

  666. throughout all of Scripture.

  667. And so with that in mind,

  668. it kind of begs the question,

  669. what about the command

  670. when Jesus gives it here

  671. to the disciples,

  672. what is making it new?

  673. Why does he call it

  674. a new commandment?

  675. And I honestly think

  676. we can see that

  677. pretty clearly

  678. in the text itself

  679. and we'll clarify that

  680. with some other Scripture

  681. as well.

  682. So when Jesus

  683. is saying this,

  684. we've said it about

  685. 20 times already today,

  686. he knows his time

  687. is coming short.

  688. He will soon be crucified.

  689. What's about to happen

  690. is that he's giving up

  691. his life.

  692. What does that mean?

  693. That means the reality

  694. of God's love

  695. that is shown to us

  696. is about to become

  697. so much more clear

  698. than it has ever been before.

  699. So clear.

  700. What was,

  701. we even talked about

  702. in the Lethia way

  703. with the kids this morning,

  704. something that has been

  705. hidden in shadows,

  706. not quite fully understandable,

  707. will be fully known.

  708. God's redemptive plan

  709. of history

  710. will be here.

  711. It's happening

  712. right now.

  713. And the disciples

  714. and us now

  715. will actually be able

  716. to actually see

  717. the love of God.

  718. Not just try

  719. to understand it,

  720. but see it perfectly

  721. displayed

  722. in Christ

  723. in so much

  724. fuller of a way

  725. than ever before.

  726. And so one way

  727. in which this commandment

  728. is new,

  729. that it's different

  730. from all of the ways

  731. in which we've been

  732. instructed to love

  733. our neighbors before,

  734. is that we actually

  735. have the perfect example

  736. of love now

  737. as we see it

  738. in the work of Christ.

  739. We now have that example

  740. to follow.

  741. You might be thinking

  742. of all of the passages

  743. right now

  744. that explain

  745. that very idea.

  746. Maybe you're thinking

  747. of John 15,

    John 15:12

  748. verses 12 and 13,

  749. that says,

  750. This is my commandment

  751. that you love one another

  752. as I have loved you.

  753. Greater love

  754. has no one than this,

  755. than someone to lay down

  756. his life for his friends.

  757. It's the exact same idea.

  758. Or you might be thinking

  759. of classic John 3, 16,

  760. For God so loved the world

  761. that he gave his only son

  762. that whoever believes in him

  763. should not perish

  764. but have eternal life.

  765. Or you might be thinking

  766. of Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6–8

  767. verses 6 through 8,

  768. For while we were still weak,

  769. at the right time,

  770. Christ died for the ungodly.

  771. For one will scarcely die

  772. for a righteous person,

  773. though perhaps

  774. for a good person

  775. one would dare even to die.

  776. But God shows his love for us

  777. in that while we were still sinners,

  778. Christ died for us.

  779. And we can keep going

  780. and going and going

  781. and list all of the passages

  782. that tie the Lord's love for us

  783. directly to his death

  784. on the cross for us.

  785. But that's so important, right?

  786. These passages are so precious to us

  787. because we actually see

  788. how massive the love of God

  789. for us is.

  790. How he has loved us.

  791. He's loved us in such a way

  792. that he gave up everything,

  793. even his own life,

  794. for the sake of those he loved.

  795. And so the disciples here

  796. were seeing that happen.

  797. They were seeing that happen.

  798. They knew it was about to happen.

  799. They didn't fully understand it.

  800. It was almost there.

  801. And so as they're seeing

  802. that perfect love

  803. of the Lord of the universe,

  804. that's how it's new, right?

  805. We are seeing

  806. the perfect love displayed.

  807. And let's remember,

  808. as we're reminded in those passages,

  809. that he did not give his life

  810. for perfect people,

  811. but gave his life for us

  812. while we were dead

  813. and our sins.

  814. He shows his love

  815. perfectly for us

  816. in that he died for us

  817. when we could do

  818. absolutely nothing

  819. for him.

  820. And that's the same kind of love

  821. we're being called to here.

  822. Not a love that thinks about

  823. what we might get in return.

  824. Not a love

  825. that loves

  826. when we could get a benefit,

  827. but a love for sinners.

  828. And if that sounds very difficult,

  829. you've been listening.

  830. Right?

  831. So let's get to

  832. number three.

  833. The impossibility

  834. and possibility

  835. of the command.

  836. I just said that

  837. if we've been paying attention well,

  838. we'll realize that

  839. what we've been called to

  840. is incredibly difficult.

  841. I would wager to say

  842. it's impossible

  843. without the grace of our Lord

  844. on our behalf.

  845. And so what is going on?

  846. What is the standard

  847. that the Lord is setting?

  848. It's certainly really high,

  849. but is it something

  850. that we can't meet?

  851. Is it something

  852. that's just getting thrown out

  853. to strive for

  854. but we can't do?

  855. Well, I think we need to remember

  856. that while we can never

  857. honor the Lord perfectly,

  858. sometimes I think

  859. we're a little too harsh

  860. on what we believe

  861. we can

  862. and we cannot do

  863. with the Lord's help.

  864. A scripture that comes to mind,

  865. I think we've shared it

  866. the most here

  867. in terms of a benediction,

  868. it's Ephesians 3

    Ephesians 3:20

  869. verses 20 and 21

  870. where it says,

  871. Now to him who is able

  872. to do far more abundantly

  873. than all that we ask

  874. or think,

  875. according to the power

  876. at work within us,

  877. to him be glory

  878. in the church

  879. and in Christ Jesus

  880. throughout all generations

  881. forever and ever.

  882. Amen.

  883. And something that I think

  884. is really important

  885. to note about that scripture

  886. when Paul is writing there

  887. is he's pointing out

  888. that the Lord is able

  889. to do far more abundantly

  890. than all we ask or think.

  891. That's clear,

  892. but the next part

  893. is so important.

  894. According

  895. to the power

  896. at work within us,

  897. according to the Holy Spirit's

  898. work in each of us,

  899. I think sometimes

  900. we can err

  901. towards the side

  902. of feeling like our sin

  903. has so much power over us

  904. that we can't get out of it,

  905. that we can't make progress.

  906. And while there's

  907. some good sentiment

  908. in that classic

  909. in the circles I grew up in,

  910. the I'm just an old sinner

  911. saved by grace

  912. kind of thinking,

  913. the Lord has also called us

  914. to sanctification.

  915. And while yes,

  916. there is effort on our part,

  917. he's the one

  918. ultimately doing that work.

  919. And so it's going to happen.

  920. He's going to accomplish it.

  921. We don't have to be

  922. stuck in our sin.

  923. And so in light of that,

  924. this is a command

  925. we can walk faithfully in

  926. and always seek

  927. to continue growing in,

  928. just as everything else

  929. that the Lord has commanded us

  930. to put off or put on.

  931. We can grow,

  932. and by the Lord's grace,

  933. we will.

  934. Years ago,

  935. I feel like the number one motion

  936. I saw Nathan make

  937. when he was preaching

  938. looked like this.

  939. like over and over

  940. and over again.

  941. And he was talking about

  942. progressive sanctification.

  943. And he explained

  944. how often

  945. we are, you know,

  946. doing well,

  947. moving on up,

  948. but then like crashing

  949. and feeling like

  950. we can't get back,

  951. but then we keep going up.

  952. But the general trend

  953. is always that we're

  954. moving up.

  955. We're growing in

  956. Christ-likeness.

  957. We should remember

  958. that we can do that.

  959. And so this command

  960. is no different.

  961. We can love one another well.

  962. All right.

  963. Y'all go ahead

  964. and turn with me

  965. to Philippians 2.

  966. Philippians 2.

  967. I'm stealing all

  968. of Alex Kohler's passages

  969. from the Lord's Supper

  970. if y'all haven't noticed it yet.

  971. But flip over there.

  972. While we've reflected

  973. that we can,

  974. we can actually grow

  975. in loving one another well,

  976. this is a passage

  977. that I think illustrates

  978. this perfectly.

  979. He paired it with

  980. earlier parts

  981. of chapter 13.

  982. And I think it's,

  983. it feels like

  984. almost a direct application

  985. of how we can love

  986. the way that the Lord

  987. has loved us

  988. that we've just read about.

  989. So let's read

  990. verses 1 through 11

  991. here in Philippians 2.

  992. So if there's

  993. any encouragement

  994. in Christ,

  995. any comfort from love,

  996. any participation

  997. in the Spirit,

  998. any affection

  999. and sympathy,

  1000. complete my joy

1001. by being of the same mind,

  1002. having the same love,

  1003. being in full accord

  1004. and of one mind.

  1005. Do nothing

  1006. from selfish ambition

  1007. or conceit,

  1008. but in humility

  1009. count others

  1010. more significant

  1011. than yourselves.

  1012. let each of you

  1013. look not only

  1014. to his own interests,

  1015. but also

  1016. to the interests

  1017. of others.

  1018. Have this mind

  1019. among yourselves,

  1020. which is yours

  1021. in Christ Jesus,

  1022. who though he was

1023. in the form of God,

  1024. did not count equality

  1025. with God

1026. a thing to be grasped,

  1027. but emptied himself

  1028. by taking the form

  1029. of a servant

  1030. being born

1031. in the likeness of men.

  1032. And being found

  1033. in human form,

  1034. he humbled himself

  1035. by becoming obedient

1036. to the point of death,

  1037. even death

  1038. on a cross.

  1039. Therefore God

  1040. has highly exalted him

  1041. and bestowed on him

  1042. the name

1043. that is above every name.

  1044. So that the name

  1045. of Jesus

  1046. every knee should bow

  1047. in heaven,

  1048. on earth,

  1049. and under the earth,

  1050. and every tongue

  1051. confess that Jesus Christ

  1052. is the Lord

  1053. to the glory

  1054. of God the Father.

  1055. Here in this passage

  1056. we see Paul

  1057. basically explain

  1058. how to love

1059. as Christ has loved us.

  1060. At the beginning

  1061. of this section

  1062. Paul is giving

  1063. some very direct

1064. this is what you should do

  1065. kind of exhortation.

  1066. But there in the

  1067. middle he shows

  1068. the mindset

  1069. we are to have

  1070. behind all those actions.

  1071. Note in those

  1072. first four verses

  1073. Paul encourages

  1074. to encourage,

  1075. to have love,

  1076. affection,

  1077. sympathy,

  1078. unity in Christ,

  1079. to not have

  1080. selfish ambition,

  1081. but to count

  1082. others' interests

  1083. more significant

  1084. than our own.

1085. But then in verse 5

  1086. Paul explains

  1087. the mindset

  1088. that we should have

  1089. while carrying

  1090. out these actions.

  1091. And what is it?

  1092. It's that we should

  1093. be looking

  1094. to the Lord.

  1095. reading verse 5

  1096. through 8 again,

  1097. have this mind

  1098. among yourselves

  1099. which is yours

  1100. in Christ Jesus

  1101. who though he was

1102. in the form of God

  1103. did not count

  1104. equality with God

1105. a thing to be grasped

  1106. but emptied himself

  1107. by taking the form

  1108. of a servant

  1109. being born

  1110. in the likeness

  1111. of men.

  1112. Being found

  1113. in human form

  1114. he humbled himself

  1115. by becoming obedient

1116. to the point of death

  1117. even death

  1118. on a cross.

  1119. Note,

  1120. Paul is tying

  1121. the thinking

  1122. exactly like

  1123. our Lord did

  1124. where it's recorded

  1125. back in John.

  1126. Our Lord commanded us

  1127. to love one another

1128. as he has loved us.

  1129. Paul gave this

  1130. long list

  1131. of what loving

  1132. one another looks like

1133. and then ties it back

  1134. to that same mindset

  1135. of tracing it back

  1136. to look at how

1137. the Lord has loved you.

  1138. Let's not think

  1139. that we are higher

  1140. than our master.

  1141. Let us serve

  1142. as he served.

1143. Just like Paul says here

  1144. he emptied himself.

  1145. He became a servant

  1146. for us

  1147. and even more

  1148. than that

  1149. he gave up

  1150. his very life

  1151. for us.

  1152. And that's

  1153. the same love

  1154. that we're called

  1155. to have

  1156. for others.

  1157. We must humble

  1158. ourselves

  1159. seek to serve

  1160. rather than

  1161. to be served.

  1162. Count others'

  1163. interests

  1164. more significant

  1165. than our own

  1166. just like

  1167. our Lord did.

  1168. And again

  1169. this is impossible

  1170. under our own strength.

  1171. Absolutely impossible.

1172. But by the Lord's grace

  1173. he will help us

  1174. to walk in it.

  1175. We can be obedient

  1176. and so let us

1177. love as he is loved.

  1178. So let's get

  1179. to number four.

  1180. Number four.

  1181. So these are

  1182. some examples

  1183. of the command.

  1184. I mentioned earlier

  1185. that I had

  1186. a little bit

  1187. of a tough time

  1188. picking exactly

  1189. what it would be

  1190. that I wanted

  1191. to preach.

  1192. I had considered

  1193. doing a reverence

  1194. sermon.

  1195. I had my text

  1196. picked out for it.

  1197. I had tried

  1198. to sit down

  1199. and write

  1200. a little bit

  1201. of it

  1202. and I just

  1203. couldn't get

  1204. my mind to it.

  1205. And I think

  1206. the reason

  1207. for that is

  1208. my thinking

  1209. was if I have

  1210. one more sermon

  1211. one more opportunity

  1212. to speak truth

  1213. to the church

  1214. to you guys

  1215. I wanted to

  1216. speak about

  1217. something that I

  1218. believe has been

  1219. the number one

  1220. thing that I

  1221. have learned

  1222. about from CFC.

  1223. and also

  1224. a thing that we

  1225. can always

  1226. continue to

  1227. press into.

  1228. And so this

  1229. is where I

  1230. landed.

  1231. I believe

  1232. as a church

  1233. we do an

  1234. incredible job

  1235. of dying

  1236. to ourselves

  1237. and serving

  1238. others.

  1239. Of considering

  1240. each other's

  1241. interests ahead

  1242. of our own

  1243. of giving up

  1244. our own

  1245. lives

  1246. for the sake

  1247. of those

  1248. around us.

  1249. when I

  1250. think of

  1251. all the

  1252. ways I've

  1253. seen this

  1254. done

  1255. for me

  1256. particularly

  1257. over the

  1258. past 10

  1259. years

  1260. I think

  1261. of so

  1262. many times

  1263. from

  1264. the brother

  1265. who taught

  1266. me as a

  1267. young believer

  1268. how to

  1269. actually

  1270. study

  1271. the word

  1272. how to

  1273. build

  1274. daily

  1275. habits

  1276. in the

  1277. word

  1278. when I

  1279. had

  1280. never

  1281. done

  1282. that

  1283. before

  1284. to the

  1285. whole

  1286. church

  1287. as a

  1288. culture

  1289. of the

  1290. church

  1291. and

  1292. every

  1293. individual

  1294. seeming

  1295. this

  1296. direction

  1297. of taking

  1298. scripture

  1299. so

  1300. seriously

  1301. and teaching

  1302. me not

  1303. to rely

  1304. on my

  1305. feelings

  1306. but to

  1307. embrace

  1308. the firm

  1309. foundation

  1310. we have

  1311. in the

  1312. word

  1313. to all

  1314. the many

  1315. people

  1316. who have

  1317. had so

  1318. many hard

  1319. conversations

  1320. with me

  1321. when I

  1322. needed to

  1323. be called

  1324. out for

  1325. my sin

  1326. to the

  1327. brother who

  1328. is very

  1329. firm with

  1330. me and

  1331. telling me

  1332. that I

  1333. finally

  1334. needed to

  1335. ask my

  1336. wife out

  1337. called me

  1338. out of my

  1339. laziness

  1340. and showed

  1341. me how I

  1342. could serve

  1343. her better

  1344. to that

  1345. same

  1346. brother being

  1347. there for

  1348. me at

  1349. the drop

  1350. of a

  1351. hat when

  1352. that

  1353. relationship

  1354. fell apart

  1355. and showed

  1356. me through

  1357. scripture that

  1358. I was being

  1359. selfish and

  1360. caring more

  1361. about a

  1362. relationship than

  1363. I was about

  1364. the woman I

  1365. was trying to

  1366. pursue and

  1367. serve

  1368. to another

  1369. brother reminding

  1370. me that I'm

  1371. more important

  1372. than a bird

  1373. and the Lord

  1374. cares so much

  1375. for me when I

  1376. was struggling

  1377. to battle

  1378. anxiety

  1379. to many

  1380. many

  1381. accountability

  1382. partners just

  1383. giving unending

  1384. hours of time

  1385. to me

  1386. just seeking to

  1387. do that day

  1388. in day out

  1389. as long as it

  1390. is called

  1391. today exhort

  1392. one another

  1393. that no

  1394. one's going

  1395. to get

  1396. hardened by

  1397. the deceitfulness

  1398. of sin

  1399. to the many

  1400. men and so

  1401. many core

  1402. groups over

  1403. time that

  1404. just again

  1405. given up so

  1406. much of their

  1407. time and

  1408. sought to

  1409. live life

  1410. with one

  1411. another to

  1412. all the

  1413. community

  1414. groups just

  1415. seeking to

  1416. press one

  1417. other well

  1418. and learn

  1419. what it is

  1420. like to live

  1421. as a family

  1422. when I was a

  1423. young college

  1424. student to

  1425. even now

  1426. to the

  1427. couple who

  1428. has literally

  1429. never turned

  1430. Margaret and

  1431. I down

  1432. when we've

  1433. needed help

  1434. or advice

  1435. that gave

  1436. up endless

  1437. amounts of

  1438. time to

  1439. help us

  1440. figure out

  1441. how to

  1442. deal with

  1443. so many

  1444. different

  1445. situations

  1446. and conflicts

  1447. especially in

  1448. early days

  1449. of marriage

  1450. to the

  1451. elders that

  1452. I've seen

  1453. go through

  1454. great lengths

  1455. to do

  1456. absolutely

  1457. everything

  1458. they can

  1459. for the

  1460. sake of

  1461. your souls

  1462. the meetings

  1463. that went

  1464. and I'm

  1465. confident

  1466. still do

  1467. go late

  1468. into the

  1469. night

  1470. those men

  1471. care about

  1472. you

  1473. those men

  1474. are truly

  1475. worthy of

  1476. double honor

  1477. having heard

  1478. their hearts

  1479. they are not

  1480. perfect men

  1481. but they

  1482. always try

  1483. to seek

  1484. your very

  1485. best

  1486. and I

  1487. could go

  1488. on I

  1489. could go

  1490. on but

  1491. I think

  1492. you get

  1493. the point

  1494. it's those

  1495. day in

  1496. day out

  1497. dying to

  1498. someone's

  1499. own desires

  1500. that's the

  1501. loving one

  1502. another

  1503. I would

  1504. be wrong

  1505. to not

  1506. take the

  1507. opportunity

  1508. that I

  1509. have right

  1510. now to

  1511. thank the

  1512. whole church

  1513. for the

  1514. way you've

  1515. loved me

  1516. and for

  1517. the way

  1518. you've

  1519. loved my

  1520. family

  1521. as Christ

  1522. has loved

  1523. the church

  1524. so well

  1525. for so

  1526. many years

  1527. but also

  1528. let's

  1529. remember

  1530. that while

  1531. we have

  1532. such great

  1533. examples

  1534. in one

  1535. another

  1536. we see

  1537. each other

  1538. love really

  1539. well

  1540. we have

  1541. the greatest

  1542. example in

  1543. Christ

  1544. our Lord

  1545. gave up

  1546. his very

  1547. life for

  1548. us

  1549. he who

  1550. knew no

  1551. sin

  1552. became

  1553. sin

  1554. so that

  1555. in him

  1556. we can

  1557. become

  1558. the

  1559. righteousness

  1560. of God

  1561. our Lord

  1562. loves us

  1563. so well

  1564. and he's

  1565. now calling

  1566. us to that

  1567. same love

  1568. for one

  1569. another

  1570. so one

  1571. final point

  1572. that's really

  1573. just a bunch

  1574. of questions

  1575. for us to

  1576. think about

  1577. a lot of

  1578. direct

  1579. application

  1580. point five

  1581. are we

  1582. following the

  1583. command

  1584. I think

  1585. I've got

  1586. four

  1587. questions

  1588. here

  1589. so in

  1590. other words

  1591. are we

  1592. choosing to

  1593. love one

  1594. another as

  1595. Christ has

  1596. loved us

  1597. are we

  1598. loving one

  1599. another with

  1600. the kind

  1601. of love

  1602. that would

  1603. lay down

  1604. our own

  1605. life for

  1606. those around

  1607. us

  1608. so first

  1609. question

  1610. do we

  1611. remember

  1612. the love

  1613. by which

  1614. we are

  1615. loved

  1616. do we

  1617. remember

  1618. the love

  1619. by which

  1620. we are

  1621. loved

  1622. we are

  1623. not going

  1624. to be

  1625. able to

  1626. love others

  1627. well if

  1628. we are

  1629. forgetting the

  1630. gospel ourselves

  1631. if we aren't

  1632. remembering that

  1633. we are wretched

  1634. sinners only

  1635. justified and

  1636. brought into

  1637. God's family

  1638. by his

  1639. great love

  1640. we'll be

  1641. tempted again

  1642. and again

  1643. and again

  1644. to be thinking

  1645. in terms of

  1646. our own

  1647. righteousness

  1648. we'll begin

  1649. to put hope

  1650. in how well

  1651. we are doing

  1652. whether that

  1653. day or that

  1654. week or that

  1655. month or that

  1656. year whatever

  1657. it may be

  1658. as we're

  1659. failing to

  1660. believe that

  1661. truth of

  1662. the gospel

  1663. we'll also

  1664. end up in

  1665. that thinking

  1666. of the song

  1667. satisfied in

  1668. you that

  1669. inbred feedback

  1670. loop that

  1671. some of us

  1672. get very

  1673. confused of

  1674. like what

  1675. is that

  1676. talking about

  1677. I think

  1678. it's talking

  1679. about that

  1680. when we

  1681. get stuck

  1682. staring at

  1683. the ground

  1684. forgetting

  1685. that ultimately

  1686. our righteousness

  1687. is not

  1688. about us

  1689. and we just

  1690. go round

  1691. and round

  1692. and round

  1693. looking to

  1694. how we're

  1695. doing and

  1696. that's going

  1697. to take us

  1698. into a circle

  1699. of being

  1700. wrecked and

  1701. wrecked and

  1702. wrecked by

  1703. the memory

  1704. of our

  1705. sin

  1706. we've got

  1707. to instead

  1708. remember the

  1709. grace that

  1710. our Lord

  1711. has shown

  1712. to us

  1713. we need

  1714. to long

  1715. for that

  1716. remembrance

  1717. of the

  1718. Lord's

  1719. love

  1720. just like

  1721. a deer

  1722. pants

  1723. for water

  1724. we have

  1725. to have

  1726. that to

  1727. live

  1728. second

  1729. question

  1730. do we

  1731. remind each

  1732. other

  1733. of the

  1734. love by

  1735. which we

  1736. are loved

  1737. do we

  1738. remind each

  1739. other

  1740. of the

  1741. love by

  1742. which we

  1743. are loved

  1744. if I'm

  1745. honest

  1746. Margaret and

  1747. I about

  1748. how we've

  1749. been doing

  1750. in this

  1751. last little

  1752. season of

  1753. life

  1754. jumping from

  1755. one to

  1756. two kids

  1757. has been

  1758. really hard

  1759. the transition

  1760. from zero

  1761. to one

  1762. felt a little

  1763. crazy but

  1764. the one

  1765. to two

  1766. transition

  1767. has just

  1768. been really

  1769. hard on us

  1770. we've

  1771. struggled to

  1772. make time

  1773. to be

  1774. together

  1775. for one

  1776. another

  1777. to have

  1778. good time

  1779. in the

  1780. word

  1781. all the

  1782. things have

  1783. been hard

  1784. Ross and I

  1785. have a

  1786. weekly phone

  1787. call

  1788. that I

  1789. think he

  1790. wakes up

  1791. about 30

  1792. seconds

  1793. before

  1794. but he's

  1795. so faithful

  1796. to adjust

  1797. to my

  1798. early

  1799. schedule

  1800. and

  1801. anyway

  1802. we were

  1803. talking

  1804. early

  1805. this

  1806. week

  1807. and

  1808. I

  1809. was

  1810. frustrated

  1811. with

  1812. myself

  1813. of

  1814. struggling

  1815. with

  1816. sin

  1817. and

  1818. just

  1819. kind

  1820. of

  1821. frustrated

  1822. with

  1823. how

  1824. Margaret

  1825. and I

  1826. were

  1827. doing

  1828. and I

  1829. had just

  1830. talked all

  1831. about this

  1832. in prepping

  1833. for this

  1834. and what

  1835. does he

  1836. do

  1837. when I'm

  1838. frustrated

  1839. he is

  1840. like

  1841. preaching

  1842. this sermon

  1843. right back

  1844. to me

  1845. that I've

  1846. just

  1847. talked

  1848. to him

  1849. about

  1850. I

  1851. needed

  1852. reminders

  1853. of the

  1854. truth

  1855. that

  1856. morning

  1857. that

  1858. this

  1859. wasn't

  1860. going to

  1861. go well

  1862. by how

  1863. well

  1864. I'm

  1865. doing

  1866. he

  1867. reminded

  1868. me

  1869. so

  1870. quickly

  1871. that

  1872. our

  1873. righteousness

  1874. comes

  1875. from

  1876. the

  1877. Lord

  1878. not

  1879. us

  1880. I

  1881. needed

  1882. that

  1883. reminder

  1884. that

  1885. morning

  1886. and

  1887. I

  1888. hope

  1889. as a

  1890. church

  1891. there's

  1892. so

  1893. many

  1894. of

  1895. those

  1896. reminders

  1897. happening

  1898. each

  1899. week

  1900. that

  1901. we

  1902. constantly

  1903. remind

  1904. each

  1905. other

  1906. of

  1907. the

  1908. love

  1909. by

  1910. which

  1911. we

  1912. are

  1913. loved

  1914. third

  1915. question

  1916. do we

  1917. love

  1918. one

  1919. another

  1920. as

  1921. the

  1922. Lord

  1923. has

  1924. loved

  1925. us

  1926. that's

  1927. literally

  1928. the

  1929. text

  1930. isn't

  1931. it

  1932. direct

  1933. application

  1934. there

  1935. from

  1936. the

  1937. text

  1938. do we

  1939. love

  1940. one

  1941. another

  1942. as

  1943. the

  1944. Lord

  1945. has

  1946. loved

  1947. us

  1948. do we

  1949. actually

  1950. actively

  1951. seek

  1952. to

  1953. serve

  1954. one

  1955. another

  1956. in

  1957. ways

  1958. that

  1959. are

  1960. sacrificial

  1961. to

  1962. ourselves

  1963. do we

  1964. put

  1965. our

  1966. own

  1967. interests

  1968. aside

  1969. for

  1970. the

  1971. sake

  1972. of

  1973. others

  1974. do we

  1975. consider

  1976. others

  1977. more

  1978. significant

  1979. than

  1980. ourselves

  1981. do we

  1982. give up

  1983. our

  1984. time

  1985. our

  1986. preferences

  1987. to

  1988. do

  1989. so
