  1. Well, it's a joy to be with you this morning as we open God's Word together.

  2. Would you open up to 1 Corinthians chapter 10.

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  3. ! We're going to be looking at verses 1 through 14.

  4. I experienced heavy fatigue, a strong fever, a long-lasting running nose.

  5. But the worst of all my symptoms was that I experienced a complete loss of both my taste and my smell.

  6. So eventually, most of my symptoms had subsided after about a week.

  7. But my smell and my taste lagged behind.

  8. So today, if I wake up and I'm having a good day, there may be about 70% of my function of smell and taste working.

  9. And that's a really good day.

  10. But on the bad days, it's only about 20%.

  11. It is a very alarming thing to lose trust in these senses.

  12. Countless decisions that I rarely thought about depend on these abilities.

  13. But the new reality for me is that I can no longer trust my own evaluation of food or smell.

  14. You see, I can't tell if cookies in the oven are burnt.

  15. And I can't tell if a diaper needs to be changed.

  16. Well, thankfully, we have passed that season as parents as of just a little while ago.

  17. But one thing is very important for us to think about.

  18. So in the light of me losing this sense, I've had to retrain my own mind to not trust what I perceive to be natural to me.

  19. So when I wake up in the morning, there's no meter that says,

  20. Ernie, you're going to feel this amount of taste or this amount of smell.

  21. Rather, I am completely unaware until I start tasting food.

  22. So this morning, we are going to be reminded of something that is similar,

  23. but has a greater impact on how we perceive what is natural to us.

  24. See, there's a malfunctioning part of our being according to God's word,

  25. and the consequences are much more significant than what food do I allow myself to digest.

  26. The Bible is clear that what has gone astray is actually that which comes from within.

  27. You see, it's our own hearts that have been impacted by the allure and the embrace of sin.

  28. The Bible is filled with all sorts of warnings about the nature of a drifting heart.

  29. Jesus said what defiles a person is what comes forth from out of the heart.

  30. And this is what our daily experiences teach us as well.

  31. We respond to our circumstances based on the things that we value inside of our hearts.

  32. We plan for the future based on the treasures that we store up in our hearts.

  33. And we even choose our entertainment based on the things that we find beautiful and delightful to our hearts.

  34. And when the heart goes astray from the Lord,

  35. it knows no other direction but to set its course towards the ever-active pursuits and the desires of the flesh.

  36. Listen to a few warnings before we get to our passage.

  37. Jeremiah 17 verse 9 says,

    Jeremiah 17:9

  38. The heart is deceitful above all things, and it's beyond cure.

  39. Who can understand it?

  40. Matthew 15 verse 19,

    Matthew 15:19

  41. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander.

  42. And finally, in 1 Peter 2, we read this,

  43. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh,

  44. which wage war against your soul.

  45. So, this morning, as we open God's word,

  46. we are called to sober reflection, brothers and sisters.

  47. We are called to consider our own hearts

  48. and their potential for drifting to the lesser pleasures

  49. rather than the all-satisfying worth of God that we experience through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  50. Okay, let's go ahead and read our passage in 1 Corinthians 10 this morning.

  51. God's word says this,

  52. For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,

  53. that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,

  54. and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

  55. and all ate the same spiritual food,

  56. and all drank the same spiritual drink.

  57. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them,

  58. and the rock was Christ.

  59. Nevertheless, with most of them, God was not pleased,

  60. for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

  61. Now, these things took place as examples for us.

  62. That we might not desire evil as they did.

  63. Do not be idolaters as some of them were.

  64. As it is written,

  65. the people sat down to eat and to drink,

  66. and they rose up to play.

  67. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did,

  68. and 23,000 fell in a single day.

  69. We must not put Christ to the test,

  70. as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents.

  71. Nor grumble as some of them did and were destroyed by the destroyer.

  72. Now, these things happened to them as an example,

  73. but they were written down for our instruction,

  74. on whom the end of the ages has come.

  75. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands

  76. take heed lest he fall.

  77. No temptation has overtaken you

  78. that is not common to man.

  79. God is faithful.

  80. And he will not allow,

  81. he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability,

  82. but with the temptation,

  83. he will also provide the way of escape

  84. that you may be able to endure it.

  85. Therefore, my beloved,

  86. flee from idolatry.

  87. Let's pray.

  88. Oh, Father, we love you this morning.

  89. We express our dependence by humbly listening to your word.

  90. Lord, we need direction so that you would satisfy our hearts.

  91. Lord, our hearts know no greater treasure

  92. and no greater value than what we see

  93. when we experience the love that you've shown to us in Christ.

  94. And so this morning,

  95. would you bring fresh clarity to our minds?

  96. Would you help us to guard against the deceitful way of the heart?

  97. And we pray that, God,

  98. you would revive our hearts

  99. and give us new courage

  100. for walking in obedience.

  101. In Jesus' name, amen.

  102. So as you may be aware,

  103. Paul, in the book of 1 Corinthians,

  104. is addressing the church from the early 50s,

  105. from the city of Ephesus that he's writing from.

  106. This happened during his third missionary journey,

  107. and for around 18 months,

  108. the gospel was proclaimed to this city by Paul,

  109. along with Aquila and Priscilla

  110. and the good news of Jesus Christ,

  111. crucified, risen, and resurrected,

  112. was received by this New Testament church.

  113. But much like our context in America,

  114. the surrounding culture of Corinth was corrupt

  115. with materialism, positioning for prominence,

  116. and pagan practices of sexuality.

  117. The Corinthians, greatly influenced

  118. by their surrounding culture,

  119. invited significant compromise into the body.

  120. In fact, some of the strongest words of the New Testament

  121. are directed towards these Corinthians,

  122. who were also divided by quests

  123. for worldly prominence and gain,

  124. and compromised by their pursuit of the flesh.

  125. You see, they had lost their ability

  126. for resisting the flesh,

  127. so much that Paul says at the beginning

  128. of chapter 3 of this book.

  129. He says,

  130. But I, brothers, could not address you

  131. as spiritual people,

  132. but as people of the flesh,

  133. as infants in Christ.

  134. Their infancy was defined

  135. by their fleshly association.

  136. And while these types of strong words

  137. are all throughout 1 Corinthians,

  138. we are reminded that even

  139. in the dangerous state of drift,

  140. Paul expresses great confidence

  141. in the grace of God

  142. that served as the anchor of hope

  143. for this church.

  144. See, though they are weak in their practice,

  145. the grace of God is abundantly sufficient

  146. to lead them in paths of righteousness

  147. for His name's sake.

  148. In chapter 1, Paul writes this,

  149. I give thanks to my God always for you

  150. because of the grace of God

  151. that was given you in Christ Jesus.

  152. that in every way you are enriched in Him

  153. in all speech and in all knowledge.

  154. So, we pick up in chapter 10

  155. as Paul provides words of warning then

  156. for this church.

  157. And they follow three basic points

  158. that we will consider this morning

  159. in our gathering.

  160. Here are the three points

  161. if you're taking notes.

  162. Number one,

  163. our shared history

  164. of misdirected hearts.

  165. Number two,

  166. drifting hearts in action.

  167. And number three,

  168. how God's faithfulness

  169. overcomes the tempted heart.

  170. In consideration of our first point,

  171. our shared history

  172. of misguided hearts,

  173. Paul directs us

  174. towards a brief history

  175. of God's people

  176. in the post-Egypt

  177. exilic wandering

  178. in the wilderness.

  179. Why does Paul want the Corinthians

  180. to remember the exile experience?

  181. Well, it's more than just

  182. a historical knowledge

  183. that Paul is after.

  184. He begins to answer this question

  185. in verse 1 of our text.

  186. He says this,

  187. For I do not want you

  188. to be unaware, brothers,

  189. that your fathers

  190. were all under the cloud.

  191. Paul appeals to the Corinthians

  192. by calling them

  193. to a state of alertness.

  194. They have struggled

  195. resisting sinful patterns

  196. because they have been careless,

  197. they have been groggy,

  198. they have been unconcerned

  199. and far from alert.

  200. The phrase which Paul uses

  201. in verse 1,

  202. I do not want you

  203. to be unaware,

  204. is captured in some translations

  205. a little differently.

  206. And he says in these translations,

  207. I want you to be aware.

  208. But I think the former

  209. is actually more helpful

  210. because the same root word

  211. which we derive

  212. the word agnostic from

  213. is the one that Paul uses.

  214. And to be an agnostic,

  215. as we know,

  216. means to be without knowledge.

  217. So Paul does not mean

  218. just an intellectual knowledge,

  219. like I said already.

  220. Rather, the knowledge

  221. that he speaks of

  222. is the type that recognizes

  223. warnings from the past.

  224. See, the danger of the past

  225. is meant to awaken

  226. the Corinthians,

  227. and it's also intended

  228. to waken us up,

  229. and particularly

  230. any of us

  231. who are prone

  232. to slumbering.

  233. We also see that

  234. in order to move

  235. from knowledge

  236. towards application,

  237. the Corinthian church

  238. is called to identify

  239. the fathers

  240. with themselves.

  241. This is really important

  242. for us to recognize

  243. because by way of

  244. our identification

  245. as God's people,

  246. we are called

  247. to do

  248. the same.

  249. These are

  250. our fathers,

  251. and these

  252. are our brothers,

  253. and also

  254. our sisters

  255. who were called

  256. to wander

  257. in the wilderness

  258. because of unbelief.

  259. It's helpful

  260. to remember

  261. that the Corinthian church

  262. was not Jewish

  263. by lineage,

  264. just like we are.

  265. Paul is saying

  266. that there is

  267. a union

  268. that we share

  269. with God's people

  270. which transcends

  271. bloodlines.

  272. So,

  273. their training

  274. is our training,

  275. their failures,

  276. are our failures,

  277. and the same ones

  278. that our hearts

  279. will be inclined

  280. towards.

  281. It's like

  282. when we go

  283. to the doctor

  284. and for your

  285. annual checkup,

  286. the doctor

  287. provides a long

  288. list of questions

  289. about the history

  290. of health

  291. in your family.

  292. So,

  293. if he discovers

  294. that there

  295. is a genetic line

  296. that traces cancer

  297. back a few generations,

  298. then he is going

  299. to provide

  300. some very firm

  301. warning and directions

  302. about how to guard

  303. against that danger.

  304. To do otherwise

  305. would be disastrous.

  306. So,

  307. what Paul is helping us

  308. to see here

  309. is that without knowledge,

  310. either by a lack

  311. of familiarity

  312. with the biblical past,

  313. or

  314. to be those

  315. who have knowledge

  316. but do not apply

  317. the warnings

  318. of that knowledge

  319. to our heart

  320. situation,

  321. well,

  322. that would be

  323. to embrace

  324. biblical foolishness

  325. and infancy.

  326. Let's continue on

  327. in verses 2 and 3.

  328. It says this,

  329. our fathers

  330. were all

  331. under

  332. the cloud

  333. and all

  334. passed

  335. through the sea

  336. and all

  337. were baptized

  338. into Moses

  339. in the cloud

  340. and in the sea

  341. and all

  342. ate the same

  343. spiritual food.

  344. See,

  345. God's people

  346. had experiences

  347. that would have

  348. seemed

  349. to prevent

  350. them

  351. from falling

  352. away

  353. from faith

  354. in the living

  355. God.

  356. They had

  357. a unified

  358. experience,

  359. didn't they?

  360. The young

  361. and the old,

  362. the strong

  363. and the weak,

  364. none of the people

  365. of Israel

  366. escaped

  367. the powerful

  368. demonstration

  369. of God's

  370. mighty deeds

  371. amongst them.

  372. In fact,

  373. during this period,

  374. God's people

  375. still bore

  376. scars

  377. from slavery

  378. that they were

  379. delivered from.

  380. Their own

  381. eyes had

  382. witnessed

  383. the cries

  384. and the

  385. devastation

  386. from Egyptian

  387. parents

  388. who grieved

  389. when their

  390. firstborns

  391. were struck

  392. down.

  393. They knew

  394. what it was

  395. like to feel

  396. dry grains

  397. of sand

  398. upon their

  399. sandals

  400. in the middle

  401. of the Red

  402. Sea

  403. and to see

  404. the cloud

  405. of the Lord

  406. leave day

  407. after day.

  408. And yet,

  409. these people,

  410. these fathers

  411. of ours,

  412. though unified

  413. died in

  414. experiences

  415. and witnessing

  416. the great

  417. acts of the

  418. Lord wrongfully

  419. trusted in

  420. their experiences

  421. while their

  422. hearts were

  423. absent of

  424. faith.

  425. So,

  426. Hebrews 4,

  427. 1,

  428. a familiar

  429. passage,

  430. says,

  431. therefore,

  432. while the

  433. promise of

  434. entering

  435. his rest

  436. still stands,

  437. let us

  438. fear,

  439. lest any

  440. of you

  441. should seem

  442. to have

  443. failed to

  444. reach it.

  445. For good

  446. news came

  447. to us

  448. just as

  449. to them,

  450. but the

  451. message that

  452. they heard

  453. did not

  454. benefit them,

  455. because they

  456. were not

  457. united by

  458. faith with

  459. those who

  460. listened.

  461. And furthermore,

  462. lest we

  463. mistakenly assume

  464. that the

  465. Israelites

  466. failed to

  467. walk by

  468. faith because

  469. they didn't

  470. experience the

  471. same hope in

  472. Christ that

  473. we do,

  474. there's some

  475. clarity that

  476. Paul helps

  477. us to

  478. arrive at

  479. in verse

  480. 4.

  481. It says

  482. this,

  483. for they

  484. drank from

  485. the spiritual

  486. rock that

  487. followed them,

  488. and the

  489. rock was

  490. Christ.

  491. See, there

  492. are differences

  493. of opinion

  494. regarding what

  495. Paul here

  496. means regarding

  497. the rock of

  498. Christ.

  499. There was a

  500. rabbinic

  501. tradition that

  502. taught there

  503. was at some

  504. point a

  505. literal rock,

  506. maybe that

  507. bookended the

  508. beginning and

  509. the end of

  510. the exile

  511. experience,

  512. that provided

  513. a literal

  514. fountain of

  515. water.

  516. But I tend

  517. to agree

  518. with some

  519. others who

  520. assert that

  521. this is a

  522. reference to

  523. a type of

  524. the Lord's

  525. supper meal

  526. that is

  527. spiritually

  528. symbolized

  529. during their

  530. time in the

  531. wilderness.

  532. See, this

  533. idea fits well

  534. with Paul's

  535. discussion of

  536. the Lord's

  537. supper later

  538. in the

  539. chapter.

  540. And on

  541. either account,

  542. what is being

  543. communicated here

  544. is one

  545. important thing.

  546. A communal

  547. experience,

  548. even of the

  549. ministry of

  550. Christ, does

  551. not prevent

  552. hearts that

  553. can drift

  554. towards

  555. unbelief if

  556. our hearts

  557. are not

  558. engaged with

  559. the Lord.

  560. It was for

  561. this reason

  562. that Paul says

  563. in verse 6,

  564. nevertheless,

  565. with most of

  566. them God was

  567. not pleased,

  568. for they were

  569. overthrown in

  570. the wilderness.

  571. So let's

  572. take a quick

  573. minute here

  574. to reflect

  575. on the

  576. nature of

  577. our own

  578. hearts.

  579. You little

  580. ones who

  581. are listening,

  582. your experience

  583. growing up

  584. with parents

  585. that love

  586. the Lord,

  587. God's word

  588. says that

  589. experience

  590. is not

  591. enough.

  592. Coming to

  593. church and

  594. being surrounded

  595. by other

  596. believing friends

  597. and adults

  598. will not

  599. save your

  600. soul.

  601. There is a

  602. danger to

  603. our souls

  604. to think

  605. otherwise.

  606. And adults

  607. finding a

  608. church that

  609. has expository

  610. reform teaching

  611. that we

  612. enjoy,

  613. that's a

  614. wonderful gift.

  615. But it is a

  616. terrible

  617. parachute to

  618. rely on.

  619. And it

  620. too can have

  621. disastrous

  622. consequences

  623. if it

  624. exists to

  625. serve your

  626. comforts

  627. rather than

  628. to drive

  629. you to

  630. the hope

  631. of your

  632. salvation,

  633. namely

  634. Christ

  635. himself.

  636. See,

  637. we have

  638. all sat

  639. through

  640. great

  641. sermons

  642. and been

  643. led by

  644. great

  645. Christ-exalting

  646. worship

  647. and yet

  648. have had

  649. hearts

  650. that were

  651. hardened

  652. by the

  653. deceitfulness

  654. of sin.

  655. I certainly

  656. have.

  657. this is a

  658. warning,

  659. brothers and

  660. sisters,

  661. and let

  662. this warning

  663. have its

  664. effect by

  665. awakening us

  666. from a

  667. deep

  668. slumbering

  669. fog and

  670. confidence in

  671. our own

  672. circumstances.

  673. Point number

  674. two,

  675. drifting hearts

  676. in action.

  677. Verse seven

  678. says this,

  679. do not be

  680. idolaters as

  681. some of

  682. them were,

  683. as it is

  684. written.

  685. The people

  686. sat down

  687. to eat

  688. and to

  689. drink and

  690. they rose

  691. up to

  692. play.

  693. The

  694. circumstances

  695. that Paul

  696. is describing

  697. here point

  698. us back to

  699. the covenant

  700. relationship

  701. between Yahweh

  702. and Israel

  703. established in

  704. the Old

  705. Testament,

  706. particularly

  707. Exodus 24

  708. through 32.

  709. Now this

  710. is a

  711. sobering

  712. scene which

  713. Paul is

  714. referencing.

  715. The people

  716. of God

  717. have agreed

  718. to keep

  719. the covenant

  720. of the

  721. Lord,

  722. and the

  723. covenant

  724. is confirmed

  725. by the

  726. shedding

  727. of covenant

  728. blood.

  729. Just listen

  730. to chapter

  731. 24 in

  732. verse 6.

  733. Moses took

  734. half of the

  735. blood and

  736. he put it

  737. in the

  738. basins,

  739. and half

  740. of the

  741. blood he

  742. threw

  743. against the

  744. altar.

  745. Then he

  746. took the

  747. book of

  748. the covenant

  749. and he

  750. read it

  751. in the

  752. hearing of

  753. the people

  754. and they

  755. said,

  756. all that

  757. the Lord

  758. has said,

  759. all that

  760. the Lord

  761. has spoken

  762. we will

  763. do,

  764. and we

  765. will be

  766. obedient.

  767. You can

  768. almost hear

  769. or imagine

  770. the confidence

  771. by which

  772. the people

  773. of God

  774. spoke these

  775. words.

  776. And Moses

  777. took the

  778. blood and

  779. he threw

  780. it on the

  781. people and

  782. he said,

  783. behold the

  784. blood of

  785. the covenant

  786. of the

  787. Lord that

  788. he has

  789. made with

  790. you in

  791. accordance

  792. with all

  793. these words.

  794. So what

  795. happens next

  796. in this

  797. account is

  798. not a

  799. surprise to

  800. most of

  801. you.

  802. Moses

  803. delayed

  804. from

  805. returning

  806. from Mount

  807. Sinai where

  808. he had

  809. encountered

  810. the glory

  811. of the

  812. Lord.

  813. God

  814. and

  815. as he

  816. does

  817. so,

  818. the people

  819. demand

  820. to

  821. Aaron

  822. that

  823. Aaron

  824. would

  825. fashion

  826. for

  827. themselves

  828. idols

  829. out of

  830. the spoil

  831. that God

  832. had previously

  833. given into

  834. their hands.

  835. So in

  836. doing so,

  837. their hearts

  838. are swept

  839. away towards

  840. the desires

  841. of the

  842. flesh.

  843. See,

  844. they have

  845. abandoned

  846. worship of

  847. the one

  848. true God

  849. and they

  850. have

  851. turned

  852. towards

  853. satisfaction

  854. in

  855. food

  856. and in

  857. playful

  858. entertainment.

  859. Paul

  860. continues on

  861. to elaborate

  862. on some

  863. other examples

  864. of the

  865. misguided

  866. heart

  867. amongst

  868. the people

  869. of Israel.

  870. In

  871. verse 8,

  872. he says,

  873. we must

  874. not indulge

  875. in sexual

  876. immorality

  877. as some

  878. of them

  879. did,

  880. and 23,000

  881. fell

  882. in a

  883. single

  884. day.

  885. Now,

  886. how did

  887. 23,000

  888. people

  889. fall

  890. in one

  891. day?

  892. Well,

  893. it was

  894. not because

  895. the people

  896. of Israel

  897. were not

  898. properly

  899. trained

  900. for battle.

  901. It was

  902. not because

  903. they didn't

  904. have enough

  905. evidence

  906. that God

  907. was powerful

  908. enough

  909. to destroy

  910. any enemies

  911. in opposition.

  912. No,

  913. rather,

  914. they saw

  915. the attractive

  916. of the

  917. daughters

  918. of Moab,

  919. and they

  920. measured

  921. on the

  922. scale

  923. of human

  924. desire

  925. whether

  926. God's

  927. glory

  928. among

  929. the

  930. nations

  931. or the

  932. fleeting

  933. pleasures

  934. of a

  935. one-night

  936. encounter

  937. was of

  938. more

  939. worth

  940. and value.

  941. See,

  942. that scale

  943. should not

  944. be a

  945. difficult

  946. one

  947. for us

  948. to balance

  949. and measure.

  950. But how

  951. dark

  952. are the

  953. recesses

  954. of the

  955. wayward

  956. heart.

  957. The

  958. warning

  959. here is

  960. a warning

  961. not because

  962. it is

  963. some

  964. far-off

  965. danger

  966. that

  967. happened

  968. to

  969. them,

  970. but rather

  971. a grave

  972. warning

  973. for us

  974. because our

  975. own hearts

  976. can

  977. and at

  978. times do

  979. drift

  980. towards

  981. the lesser

  982. pleasures

  983. of the

  984. world.

  985. Paul

  986. provides

  987. one

  988. additional

  989. example

  990. in our

  991. text

  992. in verses

  993. 9 and

  994. 10.

  995. He says,

  996. we must

  997. not put

  998. Christ

  999. to the

  1000. test

  1001. as

  1002. some

  1003. of them

  1004. did

  1005. and were

  1006. destroyed

  1007. by

  1008. serpents

  1009. nor

  1010. grumble

  1011. as some

  1012. of them

  1013. did

  1014. and were

  1015. destroyed

  1016. by the

  1017. destroyer.

  1018. So we

  1019. can remember

  1020. many

  1021. different

  1022. examples

  1023. in this

  1024. period

  1025. in which

  1026. the

  1027. people

  1028. of

  1029. Israel

  1030. grumbled

  1031. and complained.

  1032. At the

  1033. waters

  1034. of Marah,

  1035. the people

  1036. of Israel

  1037. responded

  1038. to thirst

  1039. with great

  1040. grumbling

  1041. and it

  1042. was just

  1043. three days

  1044. after walking

  1045. through

  1046. the middle

  1047. of the

  1048. Red Sea.

  1049. In Exodus

  1050. 16,

  1051. in the

  1052. wilderness

  1053. of sin,

  1054. only 45

  1055. days removed

  1056. from the

  1057. Red Sea.

  1058. the

  1059. people

  1060. again

  1061. expressed

  1062. disdain

  1063. to

  1064. Moses

  1065. and to

  1066. the

  1067. Lord

  1068. and

  1069. what

  1070. they

  1071. said

  1072. was

  1073. they

  1074. were

  1075. terribly

  1076. desiring

  1077. the

  1078. Egyptian

  1079. meat

  1080. pots

  1081. that

  1082. used

  1083. to

  1084. fill

  1085. them

  1086. and

  1087. their

  1088. request

  1089. to

  1090. Moses

  1091. or

  1092. their

  1093. complaint

  1094. to

  1095. Moses

  1096. was that

  1097. they

  1098. didn't

  1099. even

  1100. have

  1101. a

  1102. chance

  1103. to

  1104. die

  1105. in

  1106. the

  1107. brutal

  1108. land

  1109. of

  1110. captivity.

  1111. So

  1112. do we

  1113. see the

  1114. point

  1115. that

  1116. Paul

  1117. here

  1118. is

  1119. making?

  1120. Our

  1121. complaints

  1122. and our

  1123. groaning

  1124. over our

  1125. temporary

  1126. circumstance

  1127. !

  1128. imply

  1129. that

  1130. Christ

  1131. is not

  1132. enough.

  1133. Maybe

  1134. he appears

  1135. to be

  1136. enough

  1137. to you

  1138. when things

  1139. are going

  1140. well.

  1141. But as

  1142. soon as

  1143. the hunger

  1144. pains

  1145. begin

  1146. or when

  1147. the thirst

  1148. of hard

  1149. circumstances

  1150. arrives at

  1151. our door,

  1152. then the

  1153. worth of

  1154. Christ

  1155. is placed

  1156. back

  1157. on the

  1158. scale

  1159. for

  1160. testing.

  1161. Which

  1162. desire

  1163. has

  1164. greater

  1165. supremacy

  1166. in our

  1167. hearts?

  1168. Our

  1169. idols

  1170. or the

  1171. God

  1172. who

  1173. called

  1174. us

  1175. out

  1176. of the

  1177. great

  1178. darkness

  1179. and into

  1180. his

  1181. marvelous

  1182. light.

  1183. So the

  1184. heart is

  1185. capable

  1186. of this

  1187. you might

  1188. ask.

  1189. Yes,

  1190. it is.

  1191. The

  1192. testing of

  1193. the Lord's

  1194. worth is

  1195. not so

  1196. far from

  1197. us as

  1198. we would

  1199. hope.

  1200. In

  1201. these

  1202. examples

  1203. we're

  1204. reminded

  1205. to be

  1206. aware

  1207. of where

  1208. our hearts

  1209. can go

  1210. in all

  1211. types of

  1212. circumstances.

  1213. In

  1214. some

  1215. circumstances

  1216. our hearts

  1217. respond to

  1218. trials

  1219. by turning

  1220. to idols

  1221. of comfort.

  1222. In

  1223. others

  1224. we respond

  1225. to

  1226. abundance

  1227. with the

  1228. idol

  1229. of

  1230. self

  1231. dependence.

  1232. And in

  1233. other

  1234. circumstances

  1235. we respond

  1236. to God's

  1237. great

  1238. demonstration

  1239. of his

  1240. power

  1241. with

  1242. self

  1243. confidence

  1244. and pride.

  1245. God's

  1246. heart

  1247. So the

  1248. case has

  1249. been made

  1250. from God's

  1251. word this

  1252. morning that

  1253. the human

  1254. heart is

  1255. an unreliable

  1256. and unstable

  1257. foundation

  1258. to depend

  1259. on.

  1260. And it is.

  1261. We must

  1262. not move

  1263. forward so

  1264. quickly that

  1265. we do not

  1266. give weighty

  1267. consideration

  1268. to the

  1269. condition

  1270. of our

  1271. own hearts.

  1272. verse 12

  1273. says

  1274. therefore

  1275. in other

  1276. words here

  1277. comes the

  1278. response that

  1279. Paul provides

  1280. in light of

  1281. all of these

  1282. grave warnings.

  1283. He says

  1284. let anyone

  1285. who thinks

  1286. that he

  1287. stand

  1288. take heed

  1289. lest he

  1290. fall.

  1291. So be

  1292. vigilant

  1293. brothers and

  1294. sisters.

  1295. Be not

  1296. slumbering

  1297. and be

  1298. not

  1299. overconfident

  1300. in your

  1301. own heart.

  1302. Let me

  1303. ask you

  1304. this.

  1305. Where does

  1306. your heart

  1307. go when

  1308. God has

  1309. brought

  1310. abundance?

  1311. Is it

  1312. to self

  1313. satisfaction?

  1314. Does the

  1315. guard on

  1316. your heart

  1317. drop as

  1318. if you

  1319. have landed

  1320. in the

  1321. land of

  1322. safety

  1323. just after

  1324. a week

  1325. of good

  1326. family

  1327. devotions?

  1328. Do you

  1329. at times

  1330. excuse

  1331. yourself

  1332. from

  1333. transparency

  1334. with the

  1335. brothers and

  1336. sisters,

  1337. the saints

  1338. who are

  1339. called to

  1340. help you

  1341. guard against

  1342. the deceitfulness

  1343. of sin

  1344. according to

  1345. Hebrews 3?

  1346. Or where

  1347. do you go

  1348. when the

  1349. Lord has

  1350. removed his

  1351. earthly

  1352. comforts?

  1353. So

  1354. brothers and

  1355. sisters,

  1356. do we have

  1357. anywhere to

  1358. go for

  1359. hope?

  1360. Not from

  1361. our own

  1362. hearts,

  1363. but praise

  1364. be to

  1365. God in

  1366. our third

  1367. point,

  1368. he has

  1369. not left

  1370. us without

  1371. abundant

  1372. hope.

  1373. How God's

  1374. faithfulness

  1375. overcomes

  1376. the tempted

  1377. heart.

  1378. Notice

  1379. verse 13,

  1380. it says

  1381. no temptation,

  1382. no temptation

  1383. has overtaken

  1384. you which

  1385. is not

  1386. common to

  1387. man.

  1388. God is

  1389. faithful,

  1390. and he

  1391. will not

  1392. allow you

  1393. to be

  1394. tempted

  1395. beyond

  1396. your

  1397. ability,

  1398. but with

  1399. the

  1400. temptation,

  1401. he will

  1402. also

  1403. provide

  1404. the way

  1405. of escape

  1406. so that

  1407. you may

  1408. be able

  1409. to endure

  1410. it.

  1411. See,

  1412. Paul uses

  1413. two negating

  1414. words in

  1415. verse 13

  1416. that

  1417. essentially

  1418. cancel each

  1419. other out.

  1420. He could have

  1421. said a little

  1422. differently,

  1423. the temptations

  1424. which have

  1425. come upon

  1426. you are

  1427. common to

  1428. man.

  1429. He knows

  1430. how many

  1431. times the

  1432. evil one

  1433. has distracted

  1434. your heart

  1435. from seeing

  1436. God glorified

  1437. through obedience.

  1438. He knows

  1439. that this

  1440. week it

  1441. may have

  1442. felt like

  1443. 500 times

  1444. you were

  1445. tempted to

  1446. drift towards

  1447. this temptation

  1448. that you

  1449. faced.

  1450. And it

  1451. is very

  1452. clear in

  1453. this verse

  1454. that he

  1455. wants us

  1456. to know

  1457. that he

  1458. knows.

  1459. You see,

  1460. it is because

  1461. he knows

  1462. that we

  1463. can and

  1464. we should

  1465. have hope.

  1466. His

  1467. knowledge of

  1468. our sin

  1469. has compelled

  1470. and has

  1471. moved his

  1472. heart in

  1473. such a way

  1474. to show

  1475. us

  1476. compassionate

  1477. and gracious

  1478. loving

  1479. shepherding

  1480. care.

  1481. Remember

  1482. that as

  1483. we failed

  1484. over and

  1485. over in

  1486. our

  1487. temptations

  1488. so much

  1489. so that

  1490. the Bible

  1491. says we

  1492. were dead

  1493. in the

  1494. trespasses

  1495. of our

  1496. sin.

  1497. It was

  1498. at that

  1499. time that

  1500. God sent

  1501. forth his

  1502. own son.

  1503. We know

  1504. from this

  1505. text a

  1506. couple very

  1507. important

  1508. things.

  1509. So let's

  1510. take one

  1511. more look

  1512. at this

  1513. phrase

  1514. which says

  1515. this,

  1516. God is

  1517. faithful.

  1518. See,

  1519. Paul has a

  1520. very specific

  1521. point in

  1522. drawing us

  1523. to the

  1524. faithfulness

  1525. of the

  1526. Father.

  1527. Faithfulness

  1528. is a

  1529. mark of

  1530. consistency.

  1531. That's how

  1532. we normally

  1533. think of

  1534. faithfulness.

  1535. but it's

  1536. also a

  1537. picture of

  1538. one who

  1539. has a

  1540. record of

  1541. fulfilling

  1542. the promises

  1543. that have

  1544. been made.

  1545. So Paul

  1546. is not

  1547. saying that

  1548. you in

  1549. this verse

  1550. have great

  1551. abilities to

  1552. overcome

  1553. temptation,

  1554. but rather

  1555. that the

  1556. one who

  1557. has always

  1558. kept his

  1559. promises will

  1560. keep them

  1561. again and

  1562. he has

  1563. promised to

  1564. bring help

  1565. in your

  1566. temptation.

  1567. as you

  1568. fix your

  1569. eyes on

  1570. the promise

  1571. keeper

  1572. himself,

  1573. the faithful

  1574. one,

  1575. God will

  1576. lead you

  1577. towards the

  1578. way of

  1579. escape.

  1580. The way

  1581. of escape

  1582. is not

  1583. some trap

  1584. door that

  1585. we are

  1586. just to

  1587. look really

  1588. hard for

  1589. in temptation.

  1590. No,

  1591. the way

  1592. of escape

  1593. is seeing

  1594. God as

  1595. the greatest

  1596. treasure

  1597. that he

  1598. is.

  1599. It comes

  1600. by remembering

  1601. that God's

  1602. faithfulness

  1603. is most

  1604. clearly seen

  1605. in the work

  1606. of Jesus

  1607. Christ,

  1608. his one

  1609. and only

  1610. son.

  1611. Listen to

  1612. these words

  1613. of Charles

  1614. Spurgeon

  1615. describing the

  1616. faithfulness of

  1617. Christ's own

  1618. love for

  1619. his people.

  1620. He says

  1621. this,

  1622. there are

  1623. no ups

  1624. and no downs

  1625. in the love

  1626. of Christ

  1627. towards his

  1628. people.

  1629. On their

  1630. highest table

  1631. wars,

  1632. he loves

  1633. them,

  1634. but equally

  1635. as well

  1636. in their

  1637. Gethsemanes.

  1638. When they

  1639. wander like

  1640. lost sheep,

  1641. his great

  1642. love goes

  1643. after them,

  1644. and when

  1645. they come

  1646. back with

  1647. broken hearts,

  1648. his great

  1649. love restores

  1650. them.

  1651. By day

  1652. and by night

  1653. in sickness

  1654. and in sorrow,

  1655. in poverty,

  1656. in famine,

  1657. in prison,

  1658. in the hour

  1659. of death,

  1660. the silver

  1661. stream of

  1662. love ripples

  1663. at their

  1664. side,

  1665. never stayed

  1666. and never

  1667. diminished.

  1668. Forever is

  1669. the sea of

  1670. divine grace

  1671. as its

  1672. flood.

  1673. The sun

  1674. never sets

  1675. and the

  1676. fountain

  1677. never

  1678. pauses.

  1679. See,

  1680. as we

  1681. behold the

  1682. glory of

  1683. God in

  1684. the face

  1685. of Christ,

  1686. God's

  1687. own son,

  1688. our hearts

  1689. can taste

  1690. what the

  1691. superior joy

  1692. actually is.

  1693. Temptation

  1694. towards anger,

  1695. temptations

  1696. towards lust

  1697. and of

  1698. jealousy

  1699. and of

  1700. sexual

  1701. perversion,

  1702. they lose

  1703. all their

  1704. appeal

  1705. before the

  1706. one that

  1707. our hearts

  1708. were fashioned

  1709. to enjoy.

  1710. Let me

  1711. ask you

  1712. this,

  1713. have you

  1714. assumed

  1715. defeat

  1716. in the

  1717. face

  1718. of

  1719. temptation?

  1720. God

  1721. is

  1722. faithful.

  1723. Have you

  1724. neglected

  1725. the power

  1726. of the

  1727. gospel

  1728. to lead

  1729. you

  1730. towards

  1731. victory?

  1732. God

  1733. is

  1734. faithful.

  1735. Or is

  1736. God

  1737. calling you

  1738. again

  1739. to renew

  1740. your fight

  1741. against

  1742. temptation,

  1743. remembering

  1744. that his

  1745. faithfulness

  1746. is

  1747. enough?

  1748. if you

  1749. have not

  1750. put your

  1751. trust in

  1752. Jesus,

  1753. this hope

  1754. may sound

  1755. like an

  1756. amazing

  1757. reality

  1758. to be

  1759. able to

  1760. overcome

  1761. the wayward

  1762. heart.

  1763. See,

  1764. the God

  1765. of the

  1766. universe

  1767. understands

  1768. the heart

  1769. of his

  1770. children

  1771. and their

  1772. inclinations

  1773. towards sin,

  1774. and yet

  1775. he has

  1776. not

  1777. abandoned

  1778. us.

  1779. Well,

  1780. let me

  1781. lovingly

  1782. remind you,

  1783. if you

  1784. have not

  1785. put your

  1786. faith in

  1787. this God

  1788. that we

  1789. are describing,

  1790. then there

  1791. is another

  1792. picture of

  1793. God that

  1794. you must

  1795. come to

  1796. realize.

  1797. God is

  1798. amazingly

  1799. abounding

  1800. in loving

  1801. care for

  1802. his children,

  1803. but he is

  1804. also just

  1805. and he

  1806. hates

  1807. sin.

  1808. See,

  1809. he hates

  1810. sin so

  1811. much that

  1812. God has

  1813. decreed it

  1814. must be

  1815. punished.

  1816. And the

  1817. Bible says

  1818. that you

  1819. are called

  1820. to turn to

  1821. your sin

  1822. this morning,

  1823. acknowledging

  1824. your own

  1825. guilt before

  1826. God,

  1827. and to

  1828. place all

  1829. of your

  1830. trust in

  1831. the life,

  1832. the death,

  1833. and the

  1834. resurrection

  1835. of Christ

  1836. to be

  1837. able to

  1838. be his

  1839. son or

  1840. his daughter.

  1841. This hope

  1842. can be

  1843. yours this

  1844. morning.

  1845. But for

  1846. the rest

  1847. of us,

  1848. God is

  1849. calling us

  1850. to once

  1851. again consider

  1852. the nature

  1853. of our

  1854. own hearts.

  1855. We can

  1856. drift into

  1857. slumbering

  1858. quite easily,

  1859. but we

  1860. are to not

  1861. forget that

  1862. there have

  1863. been many

  1864. greater

  1865. people than

  1866. us that

  1867. have drifted

  1868. away

  1869. from the

  1870. Lord by

  1871. confidence

  1872. in their

  1873. own hearts.

  1874. A closing

  1875. word from

  1876. Psalm 40

  1877. as we

  1878. give one

  1879. more thought

  1880. to this

  1881. God that

  1882. we can

  1883. rejoice in

  1884. who helps

  1885. us in

  1886. our time

  1887. of need.

  1888. Psalm 40

  1889. says this,

  1890. verse 1.

  1891. I waited

  1892. patiently for

  1893. the Lord.

  1894. He inclined

  1895. to me and

  1896. he heard

  1897. my cry.

  1898. He drew

  1899. me up from

  1900. the pit of

  1901. destruction,

  1902. out of the

  1903. miry bog,

  1904. and he set

  1905. my feet

  1906. upon a

  1907. rock,

  1908. making my

  1909. steps secure.

  1910. prayer.

  1911. He put a

  1912. new song

  1913. in my

  1914. mouth,

  1915. a song

  1916. of praise

  1917. to our

  1918. God.

  1919. Many

  1920. will see

  1921. and fear,

  1922. and they

  1923. will put

  1924. their trust

  1925. in the

  1926. Lord.

  1927. Blessed is

  1928. the man

  1929. who makes

  1930. the Lord

  1931. his trust,

  1932. and who

  1933. does not

  1934. turn to

  1935. the proud.

  1936. Skipping

  1937. down to

  1938. verse 16.

  1939. But may

  1940. all who

  1941. seek you

  1942. rejoice,

  1943. and be

  1944. glad in

  1945. you.

  1946. May those

  1947. who love

  1948. your salvation

  1949. continually

  1950. say,

  1951. great is

  1952. the Lord.

  1953. As for

  1954. me,

  1955. I am

  1956. poor and

  1957. needy,

  1958. but the

  1959. Lord takes

  1960. thought for

  1961. me.

  1962. You are

  1963. my help

  1964. and my

  1965. deliverer.

  1966. Do not

  1967. delay my

  1968. God.

  1969. Let's

  1970. pray.
