  1. Good morning. It is so good to be with you all today and open God's word.

  2. To introduce the sermon, I'd like to reference a recent tragedy that occurred in February in Turkey.

  3. ! Over the last five years, there has been new construction in Turkey to build luxurious apartments.

  4. These buildings were to be built according to certain building codes that ensure the safety of the building and the residents.

  5. According to building codes, the buildings must be built in a safe manner that would prevent damage from any major earthquake.

  6. This could require various elements from simple foundation dampering or strengthening to motion dampering to build the entire structure on a shock absorber.

  7. To include the proper structural additions to buildings, it costs lots of money and could be quite expensive.

  8. In February of 2023, there was two major earthquakes and lots of buildings were turned into rubble and thousands were killed.

  9. Many of these buildings were supposed to be according to the code that would prevent them from falling during earthquake shaking.

  10. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

  11. And we don't have much information regarding the government, the building codes, or the developers.

  12. But there is evidence that hundreds of buildings were not built on safe foundations.

  13. When the earthquakes came, it caused widespread destruction.

  14. The earthquakes and the damage caused in Turkey is tragic.

  15. When earthquakes hit Turkey, the buildings demonstrated that they were not built safely to endure the quakes.

  16. What we build our lives upon is of great importance.

  17. If we build our lives upon the wrong things, it can have devastating effects for ourselves, for our families, and for our friends.

  18. But if we build our lives on the right things, it can have wonderful effects for ourselves, for our friends, and for our families.

  19. So today, in Luke chapter 6, verses 46 through 49, I would love for you to see that the Christian is a person who professes faith in Jesus Christ and evidences this faith in their actions.

    Luke 6:46–49

  20. The Christian is a person that professes faith in Jesus Christ and evidences this faith in their actions.

  21. So our sermon text is from Luke chapter 6, verses 46 through 49, if you'll turn there with me.

    Luke 6:46–49

  22. So Luke chapter 6, verses 20 through 48, is Luke's account of Matthew's sermon on the mount.

    Luke 6:20–48

  23. The reason I word it this way is that there is much discussion whether this is the exact same sermon that's in Matthew summarized,

  24. or if this is an entirely different sermon with a different context, and he gave some of the same teachings.

  25. Regardless, we see a lot of the same stories in Luke that Matthew teaches.

  26. So the purpose of the sermon that Jesus presents in Luke chapter 6 is to teach someone what it means to be a Christian.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  27. And in it, a Christian does not live life for this world.

  28. So in Luke chapter 6, verses 20 through 23, the disciple is financially poor.

    Luke 6:20–23

  29. He is filled with great sorrow.

  30. He is physically hungry.

  31. And he is facing persecution.

  32. All things that are hard in this life and do not give much hope.

  33. But his joy and his hope is not in this life.

  34. It is in the life to come.

  35. And while he is facing poverty and sorrow and persecution,

  36. his blessedness and abounding joy are in Christ and the kingdom that is to come.

  37. Toward the end of the sermon, Jesus begins to tell us what it looks like to follow Christ.

  38. What it looks like to be a Christian and to not be a Christian.

  39. And we come to one of those texts today in Luke 6, 46 through 49.

  40. Amen.

  41. Because of this text and the severity there, I would love for us to take a moment to examine our hearts,

  42. to reflect on our hearts, and pray for humility.

  43. So will you pray with me for just a second?

  44. Father, help us close ourselves with humility.

  45. Help us be humble towards one another.

  46. And Lord, help us humble ourselves under your almighty hand,

  47. that we can see our hearts today and our lives.

  48. And that this text would either be a great warning or a great assurance to us.

  49. In Jesus' name, amen.

  50. All right, starting in verses 43 for context.

  51. For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.

  52. For each tree is known by its fruit.

  53. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor grapes picked from a bramble bush.

  54. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good.

  55. The evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil.

  56. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

  57. Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?

  58. Everyone who does come to me and hears my words and does them,

  59. I will show you what he is like.

  60. He's like a man building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.

  61. And when the flood arose, the stream broke against the house,

  62. and it could not shake it because it had been well built.

  63. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground,

  64. without a foundation.

  65. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell,

  66. and the ruin of that house was great.

  67. In this passage, we'll have three points.

  68. There's no need to write them down because we'll go through them one by one.

  69. Our first point is the profession of Lord, Lord.

  70. Our second point is the Christian's profession.

  71. And our third point is the false profession.

  72. So point number one, the profession of Lord, Lord.

  73. In verse 46, Jesus describes an individual that comes to him and calls him Lord, Lord.

  74. The repetition of one's name in scripture often communicates familiarity,

  75. a personal relationship.

  76. Some examples in scripture we see are in Genesis 22.

  77. Abraham is about to sacrifice his son.

  78. And as he's in the moment where he pulls the dagger up,

  79. God says, Abraham, Abraham.

  80. In Luke 10, when Jesus is visiting Mary and Martha,

  81. Martha is busying herself with tasks.

  82. And she's jealous of Mary who's sitting by Jesus.

  83. And Jesus goes to Martha, Martha, Martha.

  84. In Acts 9, when Jesus speaks to Saul as he's heading to Damascus,

  85. he says, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

  86. In all these instances and many more you see in scripture,

  87. there is a personal relationship that is intimate and intentional.

  88. Someone is speaking as if they know a friend.

  89. When this person comes to Jesus and says, Lord, Lord,

  90. they generally believe that Jesus is their master.

  91. They have confidence in their position as his servant.

  92. But Jesus' response is not what you'd expect from someone who calls him Lord, Lord.

  93. He says, why do you call me Lord, Lord, and you do not do what I tell you?

  94. The servant invokes Jesus' name as Lord and personally,

  95. but in his life, there is nothing to show that he is a servant of Jesus Christ.

  96. Turn to Matthew 7 with me and we'll look at the count with more details.

  97. Matthew 7, starting in verse 21.

  98. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  99. but the one who does the will of the Father who is in heaven.

  100. On that day, many will say, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name

  101. and cast out demons in your name and do mighty works in your name?

  102. And then I will declare to them, I never knew you.

  103. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  104. In Matthew's account, we have a little bit more information

  105. regarding the individual who says, Lord, Lord.

  106. This is a person who seems to have done great things for Jesus.

  107. They have prophesied.

  108. They have cast out demons.

  109. And they've even done mighty works.

  110. But when they come to Jesus and Jesus asks,

  111. why should I grant you into the kingdom?

  112. They say, I did this.

  113. I did these works.

  114. For us, it could be I led these Bible studies or I served in this role.

  115. They're basing their hope and their salvation on their works,

  116. on the things that they believe would merit them salvation.

  117. And we see Jesus' response to this person is,

  118. I never knew you.

  119. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  120. It seems these individuals have done great things,

  121. but when it comes down to the eternal fate,

  122. they relied upon their works, not upon Christ's works.

  123. It was about what they did, not about who they believed in.

  124. And these so-called servants were generally hypocrites

  125. and did not truly love God.

  126. Brothers and sisters, this text burdens my heart.

  127. It reveals a reality that is devastatingly true today.

  128. It is this.

  129. There will be many people who say they are Christians,

  130. who would say, Lord, Lord,

  131. who will not be in the kingdom of God.

  132. It is not based on one's profession.

  133. It is not based on one's decision.

  134. It is not based on an aisle one walks

  135. that determines if they are a Christian.

  136. It is not based on the things you do for God

  137. that determines your Christianity.

  138. You could have served as a missionary for 20 years

  139. or be a retired pastor after 30 years

  140. and not be a Christian.

  141. Our Christian faith is based on the works of another.

  142. It is based on the God-man, Jesus Christ,

  143. and his life, his death, and his resurrection.

  144. In his great love, Jesus came to this earth

  145. and took on flesh.

  146. He perfectly kept the law,

  147. fulfilling every righteous requirement demanded.

  148. And he sacrificially went and died on the cross

  149. for sin.

  150. When someone repents of their sins

  151. and believes in Jesus Christ

  152. and his life, his death, and his resurrection,

  153. they are saved and will be justified

  154. and are justified.

  155. They've received Jesus' perfect righteousness for them.

  156. They no longer base their profession on what they did,

  157. on a confession of who they are,

  158. on an aisle they walked around,

  159. on a decision they made.

  160. They base it on Christ, on what he did.

  161. That's the difference.

  162. And they received the righteousness that he did perfectly for them.

  163. And their sin is attributed to Jesus in his death

  164. and paid for.

  165. We see this in 2 Corinthians 5.21.

  166. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin,

  167. so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  168. The Christian's claim for heaven is not in anything he does.

  169. It is not in our theological knowledge,

  170. our faithful parenting,

  171. our righteousness,

  172. the good things we do for others,

  173. the long weeks of serving and toiling for good things,

  174. our careers,

  175. our degrees,

  176. our accolades,

  177. none of those things have claims on heaven.

  178. They do nothing to earn us a place before God.

  179. They are filthy rags.

  180. The Christian's only claim to heaven

  181. is the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ

  182. and the substitutionary death on the cross for us.

  183. We are saved by works,

  184. just not our own.

  185. Our righteousness, as Luther has said,

  186. is an alien righteousness.

  187. It is foreign to us.

  188. It comes from outside of us

  189. and is credited to us

  190. upon repentance and belief.

  191. The 1689 London Baptist Confession

  192. summarizes this well for us.

  193. It says,

  194. Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ

  195. and his righteousness

  196. is alone the instrument of justification,

  197. yet it is not alone in the person justified,

  198. but is ever accompanied with all other saving grace.

  199. And it is no dead faith,

  200. but worketh through love.

  201. Do you see that?

  202. That faith is resting and receiving Christ

  203. in his righteousness,

  204. in his works,

  205. alone.

  206. There's nothing else that attributes to our salvation.

  207. Yet,

  208. this faith that rests on Christ and his works

  209. is never alone.

  210. It is always evidence.

  211. There is always proof of it

  212. in other saving graces,

  213. in repentance,

  214. in faith,

  215. in works.

  216. But those works and those faiths

  217. and those repentants

  218. do nothing to justify someone

  219. that is only through Christ.

  220. When Jesus saved us

  221. by his life,

  222. death,

  223. and resurrection,

  224. God took our dead hearts

  225. and he's made us alive.

  226. Christians have new hearts

  227. that love God

  228. and seek to obey him.

  229. The new heart

  230. does not produce dead faith,

  231. as the confession says,

  232. but other saving graces.

  233. John Calvin's attributed to saying,

  234. faith alone saves,

  235. but that faith is never alone.

  236. While the good works

  237. do not merit anything for salvation,

  238. they do evidence salvation.

  239. There is a place for them.

  240. When believers do good works,

  241. it makes Jesus look beautiful.

  242. So,

  243. the long weeks of serving,

  244. the faithful parenting,

  245. the hard work that you do

  246. to provide for your families,

  247. those things make Jesus

  248. look beautiful.

  249. The 1689 Confession

  250. summarizes good works

  251. in this way.

  252. These good works,

  253. done in obedience

  254. to God's commandments,

  255. are the fruit and evidence

  256. of a true and living faith.

  257. They are fruit and evidence

  258. of a true living faith.

  259. Though good work,

  260. through good works,

  261. believers express

  262. their thankfulness,

  263. strengthen their assurance,

  264. build up their brothers

  265. and sisters,

  266. adorn the profession

  267. of the gospel,

  268. stop the mouth of opponents,

  269. and glorify God.

  270. Believers are God's workmanship,

  271. creating Christ Jesus

  272. for good works,

  273. so that they bear fruit,

  274. leading to holiness,

  275. and have an outcome

  276. of eternal life.

  277. So,

  278. as I said in the beginning,

  279. the Christian is a person

  280. who professes faith

  281. in Jesus Christ

  282. and evidences this faith

  283. in their actions.

  284. Christians.

  285. This leads us to the parable

  286. in Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  287. to describe the individuals

  288. who hear the word.

  289. If you'll turn back

  290. to Luke 6 with me,

  291. we will stay there

  292. the rest of our time.

  293. when I first began

  294. preparing for this message,

  295. my main point was

  296. the Christian life

  297. is a life of faith

  298. in Jesus Christ

  299. for salvation,

  300. life,

  301. and godliness.

  302. But as I studied it more,

  303. I became convinced

  304. that the passage teaches

  305. that the Christian

  306. is a person

  307. who professes faith

  308. in Jesus Christ,

  309. and this faith

  310. is evidenced

  311. in their actions.

  312. The passage is about

  313. the profession

  314. of the individual.

  315. Here we see

  316. the Christian life

  317. is not a life

  318. of no law,

  319. but of delight

  320. in God's law.

  321. John 15, 23 says,

  322. if anyone loves me,

  323. he will keep my word.

  324. Our obedience

  325. to God's commands

  326. is the delightful duty

  327. of our love to God.

  328. The person who has believed

  329. in Jesus Christ

  330. shows their faith

  331. through their actions.

  332. J.C. Ryle,

  333. regarding this passage,

  334. says,

  335. the object of the parable

  336. is not to teach

  337. the doctrine of justification,

  338. that the rock

  339. or the foundation

  340. we're building on

  341. is Christ,

  342. but instead,

  343. it is to teach

  344. the folly

  345. of the Christian profession

  346. unaccompanied

  347. by Christian practice.

  348. It is to teach

  349. the folly

  350. of Christian profession

  351. that is unaccompanied

  352. by Christian practice,

  353. and the certain ruin

  354. to such profession

  355. must lead to,

  356. if persisted then.

  357. So the parable

  358. is not about justification,

  359. it's not about

  360. we are building

  361. our foundation on Christ,

  362. but more it's about

  363. the profession.

  364. It's not about justification,

  365. it's about demonstration here.

  366. Jesus is talking about

  367. what it means

  368. to be a Christian,

  369. not who we base

  370. our lives upon,

  371. but how our lives

  372. are built up in Christ.

  373. That's why we see

  374. it's the person

  375. who hears the word

  376. and either believes in it

  377. and does it,

  378. or the person

  379. who hears the word

  380. and does not believe in it

  381. and does not do it.

  382. But it's all based

  383. on the person saying,

  384. Lord, Lord.

  385. So this leads us

  386. to our second point,

  387. which is the Christian's profession.

  388. In the parable,

  389. the first person mentioned

  390. is the person

  391. who hears God's word

  392. and does what it says.

  393. If you look at

  394. verse 47 with me,

  395. it says,

  396. everyone who comes to me

  397. and hears my word

  398. and does them,

  399. I will show you

  400. what he is like.

  401. And in this part,

  402. this person is the one

  403. who digs deep

  404. and lays a foundation.

  405. We see throughout

  406. this parable,

  407. there are multiple elements

  408. involved in laying

  409. the foundation.

  410. First,

  411. there is a cost involved

  412. to laying a foundation.

  413. There is a blueprint

  414. to how to do it

  415. and there's the benefit

  416. of being a Christian

  417. or of doing it well.

  418. So first,

  419. let us look at the cost

  420. of being a Christian.

  421. The man in the parable

  422. had to choose

  423. the best place to dig.

  424. They had to dig deep

  425. through rock and dirt

  426. and to lay a proper foundation

  427. that will endure the storms.

  428. Surely,

  429. this work was grueling

  430. and this time,

  431. they did not have machinery

  432. to do the hard work,

  433. but instead,

  434. they did it

  435. with their own hands.

  436. It took time,

  437. it took blood,

  438. sweat,

  439. and tears

  440. to put a house down

  441. properly back then.

  442. The same is true

  443. for the Christian.

  444. To be a Christian,

  445. there is a cost

  446. to be counted.

  447. It is to see God's word

  448. as the supreme standard

  449. for our lives.

  450. As a Christian,

  451. we are not our own,

  452. but we're bought

  453. with a price.

  454. When we profess faith

  455. in Jesus,

  456. it is not merely

  457. a profession

  458. of sincerity

  459. or of association

  460. with Jesus.

  461. Our profession

  462. of faith

  463. in Jesus Christ

  464. is the casting

  465. of ourselves

  466. on Jesus

  467. as the only means

  468. of salvation

  469. and life.

  470. This faith flows

  471. from the abundance

  472. of the heart

  473. and forever

  474. changes our lives.

  475. Christians no longer

  476. live for this world

  477. and themselves,

  478. but for Christ.

  479. Everything we do

  480. should be to serve

  481. His kingdom

  482. and His glory,

  483. not our kingdom

  484. and our glory.

  485. J.C. Riles

  486. summarizes the cost

  487. of being a Christian

  488. well.

  489. Like the house

  490. built on rock,

  491. it may entail

  492. Him pains,

  493. labors,

  494. and self-denial.

  495. To lay aside

  496. our pride

  497. and self-righteousness.

  498. To crucify

  499. the rebellious flesh.

  500. To put on

  501. the mind of Christ

  502. and take up

  503. our cross daily.

  504. To count all things

  505. but loss

  506. for Christ's sake.

  507. All this

  508. may be hard work,

  509. but like the house

  510. built on the rock,

  511. such religion

  512. will stand.

  513. So some questions

  514. for reflection.

  515. Have you

  516. counted the cost

  517. the cost

  518. of being a Christian?

  519. Do you live

  520. in such a way

  521. that you're picking

  522. up your cross daily?

  523. Does your life

  524. reflect pride

  525. and self-righteousness

  526. or humility?

  527. While the cost

  528. of being a Christian

  529. is great,

  530. there is a blueprint

  531. for this work

  532. and there is great

  533. benefit we receive

  534. from it.

  535. So second,

  536. God gives,

  537. God has given

  538. the Christian

  539. a blueprint,

  540. a way in which

  541. to do this.

  542. In the scriptures,

  543. Jesus is called

  544. the foundation

  545. on which no other

  546. foundation is laid.

  547. He is also called

  548. the chief cornerstone

  549. in Ephesians 2.20

  550. and 1 Peter 2.6.

  551. It is true

  552. that Jesus

  553. is our foundation

  554. and cornerstone.

  555. It is through

  556. his person and work

  557. that our salvation

  558. alone comes.

  559. But in the scriptures,

  560. there's other talk

  561. of foundation.

  562. So in Ephesians 2.20,

  563. it says that the church

  564. is built on the foundation

  565. of the apostles

  566. and prophets.

  567. Christ Jesus himself

  568. being the cornerstone.

  569. In the early church

  570. in Acts 2,

  571. it said that the church

  572. was devoted

  573. to the apostolic teaching.

  574. In Ephesians 4.5-6

  575. says the church

  576. grows up into Christ

  577. through the truth,

  578. through God's word.

  579. John 17.17 says,

  580. Sanctify them in truth.

  581. Your word is truth.

  582. While Christ

  583. is the chief cornerstone,

  584. we are building

  585. our lives in Christ

  586. through his word,

  587. according to these passages.

  588. It is his word

  589. that is the materials

  590. by which we build

  591. and which we labor

  592. to put our building upon.

  593. God's word

  594. is the ordained means

  595. by which we build

  596. our lives upon.

  597. It is his word

  598. that reveals

  599. the eternal word,

  600. Jesus Christ.

  601. And as we build

  602. our lives upon

  603. the word of God,

  604. the truth grows us up.

  605. In fact,

  606. John 17.3 says,

  607. we experience eternal life

  608. through knowing God.

  609. And this knowing of God

  610. is both propositional

  611. in our knowledge of him

  612. and our intellect

  613. and understanding him

  614. and knowing doctrine,

  615. but it is also experiential

  616. in how we experience

  617. that doctrine.

  618. If we know Jesus

  619. and we know

  620. what his word says

  621. and we think it's wonderful,

  622. but we don't do it,

  623. we don't practice it

  624. in our lives,

  625. at our work,

  626. in our parenting,

  627. then we're not experiencing

  628. the fullness of life

  629. that is in Jesus Christ.

  630. We're going to experience

  631. eternal life presently now

  632. through his word.

  633. But this looks forward

  634. to the blessed

  635. and happy life to come.

  636. So as we now know him

  637. in his word,

  638. we build our lives

  639. upon him,

  640. upon his word.

  641. It is,

  642. we're going to slowly enjoy

  643. this life that is in Christ.

  644. We'll understand Christ more

  645. and as we understand him,

  646. we'll experience him

  647. in our lives.

  648. So when you are parenting

  649. and you are speaking truth

  650. to your child,

  651. it helps train them up

  652. in what God says.

  653. In our marriages,

  654. when things are hard,

  655. instead of going against

  656. one another,

  657. if we speak truth

  658. to one another,

  659. and that is what governs

  660. our marriages,

  661. we are going to slowly

  662. enjoy this life

  663. more and more.

  664. So this leads me

  665. to three primary ways

  666. in which we build our lives

  667. upon God's word.

  668. Number one,

  669. we build our lives

  670. upon the truths

  671. found in God's word.

  672. It is in the truth

  673. of God's word

  674. that reveals

  675. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  676. It is through the truths

  677. of God's word

  678. that he gives us

  679. means to fight our sin,

  680. to trust God

  681. and his promises,

  682. and causes us to grow.

  683. Hebrews 4.12 says

  684. that God's word

  685. is living and active,

  686. sharper than any

  687. two-edged sword,

  688. piercing the division

  689. of the soul and spirit,

  690. of joint and of morrow,

  691. and discerning the thoughts

  692. and intention of the heart.

  693. Notice in this passage

  694. when it says

  695. God's word is living and active

  696. is that his word

  697. is actively working.

  698. It is not a passive

  699. working in our life,

  700. but when we take God's word

  701. and we know it

  702. and it's in our hearts,

  703. it is actively

  704. and effectively

  705. working in the believer

  706. and making them more alive

  707. and completing the work

  708. of salvation

  709. that God has begun.

  710. David Powelson says

  711. in scripture,

  712. God comes in person.

  713. We participate

  714. by hearing and responding.

  715. When you consider

  716. how you form your day,

  717. consider the way

  718. in which you are embracing

  719. God's word and keeping it.

  720. Is God's word

  721. the first thing you put

  722. in your heart in the morning?

  723. Does his word

  724. renew your mind

  725. and help you love him

  726. and others well?

  727. Do you memorize

  728. and meditate on his word?

  729. Does his word

  730. flow from our mouths?

  731. What we think about

  732. and spend our time doing

  733. is often what we talk about

  734. and invite others into?

  735. Number two,

  736. we build our relationship

  737. on God's word

  738. or our relationships

  739. on God's word.

  740. Throughout scripture,

  741. healthy relationships,

  742. healthy marriages,

  743. and healthy families

  744. are built on the abiding

  745. word of God.

  746. As Christians,

  747. the way we practice

  748. our faith

  749. is through loving God.

  750. If God is our delight

  751. and his word is in us,

  752. it overflows

  753. into our lives

  754. and in our relationships.

  755. Not only is this

  756. the best blessing

  757. we bring to our relationships,

  758. it's also commanded of us.

  759. Friends are supposed

  760. to speak truth,

  761. love,

  762. forgive,

  763. bear with one another,

  764. be kind to one another,

  765. and have compassion.

  766. Husbands are supposed

  767. to lead their wives

  768. or to love their wives

  769. and wash them in the word.

  770. Parents are to raise

  771. their children

  772. in the discipline

  773. and instruction

  774. of the Lord.

  775. The word of God

  776. is the cement

  777. of healthy,

  778. thriving relationships.

  779. So my question

  780. on this point is,

  781. does the word of God

  782. submit your friendships,

  783. marriage,

  784. and parenting?

  785. Number three,

  786. we build our church

  787. on God's word.

  788. The church

  789. is a new covenant community.

  790. It has come into existence

  791. through God himself

  792. calling us

  793. and speaking life

  794. into our hearts.

  795. According to Ephesians 4,

  796. 15 through 16,

  797. it says,

  798. Rather,

  799. speaking the truth

  800. in love,

  801. we are to grow up

  802. in every way

  803. into him who is the head,

  804. into Christ,

  805. from whom the whole body,

  806. joined and held together

  807. by every joint

  808. with which it is equipped,

  809. when each part

  810. is working properly,

  811. makes the body grow

  812. so it builds itself

  813. up in love.

  814. The means

  815. in this process

  816. of how the church

  817. has grown into Christ

  818. and becomes more Christ-like

  819. and is built up in love

  820. is through the truth.

  821. It begins,

  822. speaking the truth

  823. in love.

  824. The church

  825. is built up

  826. through God's love

  827. and his word

  828. so that it can mature us

  829. and so that we can

  830. exalt Christ

  831. in how we live.

  832. God's word

  833. is the nourishment

  834. to his church,

  835. but it is also

  836. the proclamation

  837. of his church.

  838. It's what comes

  839. out of them.

  840. Being a Christian

  841. has a great cost

  842. but we have been given

  843. God's ordained means

  844. to help us.

  845. When we hear his word,

  846. our obedience

  847. is our joyful delight,

  848. a joyful duty

  849. and responsive love

  850. to him.

  851. When we obey,

  852. there is great benefit.

  853. So, thirdly,

  854. there is great benefit

  855. for the person

  856. who hears God's word.

  857. In the parable,

  858. the individual

  859. is building their lives

  860. on the good foundation.

  861. When the storm comes,

  862. it does not destroy

  863. his life.

  864. The flood here

  865. is understood

  866. as suffering.

  867. When suffering comes,

  868. the person

  869. who has faith

  870. in Jesus Christ

  871. and has built

  872. their lives

  873. upon his word

  874. endures the storm.

  875. When suffering

  876. comes to us,

  877. our response

  878. to suffering

  879. demonstrates

  880. our faith.

  881. When the storms

  882. rage against us

  883. and the firings

  884. of suffering burn,

  885. it reveals

  886. the genuineness

  887. of our faith,

  888. God uses

  889. the agonizing events

  890. and the overwhelming

  891. grief

  892. to care for us.

  893. In those moments

  894. of greatest affliction,

  895. our lives show

  896. the surpassing power

  897. and worth of God

  898. who loves us

  899. and who comforts us.

  900. He is our refuge

  901. and our strength.

  902. He is our helper

  903. and the upholder

  904. of our life.

  905. When we experience

  906. the griefs

  907. of this world

  908. and our heart

  909. is downcast

  910. and our clothes

  911. are full of tears,

  912. we can say

  913. with a deep

  914. and abiding joy,

  915. hope in God

  916. for I shall again

  917. praise him,

  918. my salvation

  919. and my God.

  920. The Christian

  921. receives great benefit

  922. because he

  923. will weather

  924. the storms of life

  925. with hope in God

  926. and in his word.

  927. The Christian's life

  928. is built on the word

  929. of God

  930. and will evidence

  931. their faith

  932. and their action.

  933. true Christian

  934. profession

  935. is always

  936. accompanied

  937. by Christian

  938. practice.

  939. So we've talked

  940. about the person

  941. who says

  942. Lord,

  943. Lord,

  944. we've talked

  945. about the Christian

  946. profession,

  947. now we're going

  948. to go back

  949. to this person

  950. who's saying

  951. Lord,

  952. Lord

  953. and does not

  954. do what he

  955. says

  956. with the false

  957. profession.

  958. That is found

  959. in verse 46

  960. and 47.

  961. Or,

  962. sorry,

  963. 48 and 49.

  964. This type of person

  965. is the one

  966. who hears

  967. the words of Jesus

  968. and does not

  969. do what he says.

  970. he is the person

  971. with no foundation.

  972. This person professes

  973. to be a Christian

  974. but their actions

  975. do not evidence

  976. their faith.

  977. In the parable,

  978. the person built

  979. their house

  980. but did not

  981. dig a foundation.

  982. So when the flood

  983. came,

  984. their house

  985. was totally destroyed.

  986. The parable

  987. teaches that

  988. it would be foolish

  989. to build a house

  990. with no foundation

  991. because in that area

  992. when floods come,

  993. it would destroy

  994. a house.

  995. So the obvious

  996. point here is

  997. that there's foolishness

  998. in building a house

  999. and no foundation.

  1000. The point Luke

  1001. wants us to see

  1002. is that

  1003. there is folly

  1004. of one who professes

  1005. Christ as Lord

  1006. but does not

  1007. live for him.

  1008. This parable

  1009. is a warning

  1010. to the hypocritical

  1011. Christian,

  1012. to the person

  1013. who says Jesus

  1014. is Lord,

  1015. who says they are

  1016. a Christian

  1017. but their life

  1018. doesn't show it,

  1019. that there's nothing

  1020. to bear fruit

  1021. of it.

  1022. This person

  1023. claims Christ

  1024. but their building

  1025. does not reflect

  1026. a house built

  1027. on God's word.

  1028. True and living faith

  1029. always evidences

  1030. itself in good works

  1031. and adorns

  1032. the profession

  1033. of the gospel.

  1034. So a question

  1035. I have for you

  1036. is does your life

  1037. demonstrate your faith?

  1038. Is your profession

  1039. evidenced in your action

1040. or are you a building

  1041. with no foundation

  1042. that if trials

  1043. came today

  1044. you would fall?

  1045. I pray everyone

  1046. here today

  1047. professes faith

  1048. in Jesus

  1049. and that this is

  1050. seen in their life

1051. and if it is not

  1052. this is a moment

  1053. to heed the warning

  1054. of the parable.

  1055. Verse 49 says

1056. the ruin of that house

  1057. was great.

  1058. For the person

  1059. who hears God's word

1060. and does not do it

  1061. his life reflects

  1062. his belief.

  1063. It is the person

  1064. whom Jesus will say

  1065. to them

  1066. one day

  1067. I never knew you

  1068. depart from me

  1069. you worker

  1070. of lawlessness.

  1071. The fate

  1072. of the false professor

  1073. is much worse

  1074. than physical death.

  1075. It is much worse

  1076. than a destruction

  1077. of a house

  1078. or the destruction

  1079. of a ten story

  1080. apartment in Turkey.

  1081. It is spending

  1082. an eternity

  1083. in hell.

  1084. Hell is the eternal

  1085. punishment

  1086. of God's justice

  1087. on sin.

  1088. It is described

  1089. as a place

  1090. of weeping

  1091. of gnashing

  1092. of teeth

  1093. and where

  1094. the worm

  1095. does not die.

  1096. The passage

  1097. is a clear

  1098. warning

  1099. to all

  1100. who profess Christ

  1101. to examine

  1102. their lives

  1103. and to be confident

1104. that you are in Christ

  1105. and your life

  1106. evidences it.

  1107. But

  1108. if you today

  1109. find yourself

  1110. outside of Christ

  1111. you look within

  1112. and you do not

  1113. see fruit.

  1114. There is nothing

  1115. to show

  1116. for your faith.

  1117. There is hope.

1118. There is a living hope

  1119. and his name

  1120. is Jesus Christ.

  1121. So today

  1122. you can flee.

  1123. You can flee

  1124. from the destruction

  1125. and ruin

  1126. to come

  1127. that is great.

  1128. And you can find

  1129. salvation in Jesus Christ

  1130. in his life

  1131. in his death

  1132. and in his resurrection.

  1133. Like the parable

  1134. there is no hope

  1135. for the person

  1136. who does not

  1137. place faith

  1138. in Jesus Christ.

  1139. Because this world

  1140. does not offer

  1141. them anything.

  1142. There is no hope

  1143. in this world

  1144. for a life

  1145. to come.

  1146. But it will all

  1147. be destroyed

  1148. one day.

  1149. If you build

  1150. your life

  1151. on anything

  1152. but Jesus

  1153. you will be

  1154. left hopeless

  1155. and there

  1156. will be

  1157. great ruin.

  1158. In conclusion

  1159. the one who

  1160. hears God's

  1161. word

  1162. and does it

  1163. will endure

  1164. the storm

  1165. and be welcomed

  1166. into the blessed

  1167. and happiness

  1168. kingdom.

  1169. There is a great

  1170. and wonderful

  1171. kingdom to come

  1172. that is full

  1173. of forever

  1174. blessedness

  1175. peace

  1176. and joy

  1177. with our

  1178. Savior.

  1179. Savior.

  1180. The one

  1181. who professes

  1182. faith

  1183. in Jesus

  1184. as Lord

  1185. but does not

  1186. do it

  1187. is the one

  1188. who will

  1189. experience

  1190. a great ruin

  1191. and a miserable

  1192. end awaiting

  1193. them.

  1194. Our lives

  1195. always evidence

  1196. our profession.

  1197. So let us be

  1198. those who believe

  1199. in Jesus

  1200. and demonstrate

  1201. our faith

  1202. in our lives.

  1203. So I'd love

  1204. to end this time

  1205. with giving you

  1206. some verses

  1207. from the hymn

  1208. How Firm

  1209. a Foundation.

  1210. Two verses

  1211. in verse

  1212. number one

  1213. and number three

  1214. in your hymnal

  1215. if you want

  1216. to look them

  1217. up later.

  1218. How firm

  1219. a foundation

  1220. ye saints

  1221. of the Lord

  1222. is laid

  1223. for your faith

  1224. in his

  1225. excellent word.

  1226. What more
