  1. Let me invite you to take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today as we continue to make our journey through the book of Romans.

  3. !

  4. We find in this morning's text the doctrine of total depravity.

  5. Put simply, this is the teaching that mankind lacks any spiritual good

  6. and lacks the ability to do good before God.

  7. I haven't stated this doctrine by its name,

  8. but in our study of Romans, this has been the driving point that Paul has been making

  9. from chapter 1 and verse 18 where he states,

  10. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

  11. And it concludes at verse 20 of today's text.

  12. He wants to be so clear that anyone, whether of Jewish descent or otherwise,

  13. lives under the curse of sin.

  14. He wants us to be clear that this is true of us.

  15. Romans chapter 2 and verse 12.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  16. There he writes,

  17. For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law.

  18. And all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

  19. And he's doing all of this because this is the reasonable starting point

  20. from which to prove his thesis for the entirety of this book,

  21. which we will do throughout the rest of the letter.

  22. And he states that thesis in chapter 1, verse 16 and 17,

  23. where there he says,

  24. For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  25. for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  26. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  27. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,

  28. as it is written,

  29. the righteous shall live by faith.

  30. Why might we care to pay attention to Paul's writing?

  31. He tells us in verse 18 of chapter 1,

  32. because of wrath.

  33. He's saying, listen to what I have to say.

  34. He's setting up the problem for us,

  35. the due penalty for our sin.

  36. All of mankind has a huge problem

  37. that only finds its remedy in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  38. Now, I have a note hanging taped to the wall in my study above my desk that reads,

  39. and I picked this up somewhere.

  40. I can't tell you where,

  41. but I'm not going to take credit for it.

  42. But it says this,

  43. When preparing to preach,

  44. remember the weary,

  45. the wayward,

  46. the proud,

  47. the lazy,

  48. and the lost.

  49. Admittedly, I don't always remember,

  50. and when I do remember,

  51. I don't always do a good job

  52. of applying a text to each of these categories of individuals.

  53. So this morning,

  54. I want to tackle the task up front,

  55. and be sure.

  56. To address each of these categories of people

  57. in the hopes of preparing you for today's study.

  58. So first, this morning,

  59. you might find yourself weary.

  60. Do not allow a text like this to beat you down.

  61. If you are weary because you have been laboring to be accepted by our God,

  62. be reminded today that you cannot be accepted by God by your works.

  63. You are right to be worn out,

  64. if that is what you have been up to this past week.

  65. But you can be accepted by God through the works of another.

  66. Rest today in the truth of the gospel,

  67. even as we consider how wicked you once were.

  68. Maybe this morning you are fit in the category of the wayward.

  69. Perhaps God is already drawing you back to himself

  70. as you find yourself here in my listening.

  71. Maybe you have drifted in your faith.

  72. This text should remind you of the folly of sin.

  73. It can be so enticing on the front end,

  74. but it leads nowhere but to destruction.

  75. Return to your God.

  76. He knows how feeble and easily tempted you are,

  77. and stands ready to grant you grace in your repentance.

  78. Maybe this morning you are proud.

  79. Perhaps you have forgotten who you once were.

  80. Be humbled that God saved one such as you.

  81. Every one of us identifies with this text,

  82. either as who we once were or who we now are.

  83. Perhaps you think a text like this has nothing to teach you,

  84. that you are so familiar with the doctrine of total depravity

  85. that you need not hear it.

  86. Be grateful that God has led you into this truth,

  87. and rejoice in its declaration,

  88. because other people may need to hear it.

  89. Perhaps you find yourself lazy this morning.

  90. Ty articulated well for us last week

  91. that we are not saved by our works,

  92. rather that we are saved by our faith,

  93. but that faith is a faith that works.

  94. Do not use God's grace towards you

  95. as an excuse for licentious living.

  96. If you are in Christ,

  97. you should not presently identify

  98. with the people described in our text.

  99. They should feel like an other to you

  100. if you are in Christ.

  101. Labor by grace to live a life

  102. that is honorable to our God.

  103. And this morning,

  104. if you are lost,

  105. you have no hope apart

  106. from the saving work of Christ.

  107. Your soul is in a desperate state,

  108. and you know that eternity

  109. somewhere awaits you.

  110. You know this because God has put

  111. eternity into man's heart.

  112. We learn this from Ecclesiastes chapter 3

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  113. and verse 11.

  114. You know there is a something beyond.

  115. You can spend eternity

  116. in the loving presence of God

  117. because he has made a way for you

  118. to be declared innocent

  119. and to be declared righteous.

  120. Repent and believe in the gospel

  121. of Jesus Christ.

  122. So our text for today is Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  123. and I'll begin reading in verse 9.

  124. Before I read,

  125. let me remind you, beloved,

  126. this is God's word to us,

  127. written for his glory and our good.

  128. And so we would all do well

  129. to listen to it in order to believe

  130. its promises and to obey its commands.

  131. Paul writes,

  132. Their throat is an open grave.

  133. They use their tongues to deceive.

  134. The venom of asps is under their lips.

  135. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.

  136. Their feet are swift to shed blood.

  137. In their paths are ruin and misery,

  138. and the way of peace they have not known.

  139. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  140. Now we know that whatever the law says,

  141. it speaks to those who are under the law

  142. so that every mouth may be stopped,

  143. and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

  144. For by works of the law,

  145. no human being will be justified in his sight,

  146. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  147. Now at the end of chapter 2,

  148. Paul has stated,

  149. verse 28 and 29,

  150. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly,

  151. nor is circumcision outward and physical,

  152. but a Jew is one inwardly,

  153. and circumcision is a matter of the heart,

  154. by the spirit,

  155. not by the letter.

  156. His praise is not for man,

  157. but from God.

  158. So he's saying that belonging to God's people

  159. is a matter of the inner life,

  160. not the outer.

  161. It's not about being circumcised.

  162. It's not about being of Jewish descent.

  163. And he's going to continue to work this argument out

  164. throughout the letter.

  165. But then he asks a question.

  166. He's meeting objections all the time.

  167. He's anticipating them,

  168. and meeting them in chapter 3 and verse 1,

  169. where he says,

  170. Then, what advantage has the Jew?

  171. Or, what is the value of circumcision?

  172. And the answer is that it is of great value

  173. because Israel was the nation

  174. to whom came God's word.

  175. That the law itself was of benefit to them.

  176. Which leads him to ask the question

  177. at the beginning of today's text.

  178. What then, he says?

  179. Beginning of verse 9,

  180. Are we Jews any better off?

  181. And he means any better off

  182. in the sense of standing before God.

  183. And we can see that by his answer.

  184. He's saying,

  185. Yes, yes to the Jews came the oracles of God.

  186. You see this at the beginning of chapter 3.

  187. However, in our standing before God,

  188. does that change anything?

  189. And in verse 9, he says,

  190. No, not at all.

  191. Why?

  192. Because we have already charged

  193. all throughout the past half of chapter 1

  194. and through chapter 2,

  195. that all, both Jews and Greeks,

  196. are under sin.

  197. And this is the point of today's text.

  198. Right?

  199. All, Jews and Greeks,

  200. under sin.

  201. This is the doctrine of total depravity.

  202. In fact,

  203. if you've been here with us,

  204. you know that I've used this text

  205. to proof and speak to

  206. all that Paul has been trying to say

  207. in the last of chapter 1

  208. and into chapter 2.

  209. So for today,

  210. as we look at this text,

  211. just a brief outline for us.

  212. we're going to see first Paul make an accusation

  213. and second Paul deliver a verdict.

  214. Paul makes an accusation

  215. and Paul delivers a verdict.

  216. So we said in the last half of verse 9

  217. in this accusation,

  218. we have already charged all.

  219. Jews and Greeks are under sin.

  220. And at the beginning of verse 10,

  221. we see,

  222. As it is written.

  223. Paul launches into his accusation of mankind

  224. by citing 9 times

  225. from the Old Testament.

  226. It's a good, proper Bible preacher.

  227. So I'm going to tell them to you.

  228. You can probably see these in your footnotes.

  229. But Psalm 14, verses 1-3.

    Psalms 14:1–3

  230. Psalm 53, verses 1-3.

    Psalms 53:1–3

  231. Psalm 5, 9.

  232. Jeremiah 5, 16.

  233. Psalm 140, verse 3.

    Psalms 140:3

  234. Psalm 10, verse 7.

    Psalms 10:7

  235. Proverbs 1, verse 16.

    Proverbs 1:16

  236. Isaiah 59, verses 7 and 8.

    Isaiah 59:7

  237. And Psalm 36, and verse 1.

  238. He's bringing the Bible to bear.

  239. Paul understood

  240. that the Scripture of his day

  241. was inspired by God.

  242. And he's bringing it to bear

  243. in the lives of his hearers.

  244. And Paul makes 13 charges

  245. in the following verses.

  246. And he divides these charges

  247. into three categories.

  248. So the first charges

  249. have to do with

  250. the character

  251. of fallen mankind.

  252. And this is verses 10-12.

  253. This is the classic

  254. we're all familiar with.

  255. None is righteous.

  256. No, not one.

  257. No one understands.

  258. No one seeks for God.

  259. All have turned aside.

  260. Together they have become worthless.

  261. No one does good.

  262. Not even one.

  263. Because of their fallen state,

  264. mankind is universally evil,

  265. spiritually ignorant,

  266. misguided,

  267. wandering,

  268. spiritually useless.

  269. This is where we derive

  270. the term totally depraved.

  271. And morally corrupt.

  272. Altogether in character

  273. set against God.

  274. Biblical Christians

  275. believe in the doctrine

  276. of total depravity.

  277. That we have

  278. nothing good

  279. of ourselves

  280. to offer

  281. to the equation

  282. of our salvation.

  283. But biblical Christians

  284. also believe

  285. in the doctrine

  286. of common grace.

  287. This means that

  288. people aren't always

  289. as bad as they could be

  290. because God grants

  291. mankind

  292. some measure of grace

  293. to be loving,

  294. gentle,

  295. kind,

  296. just,

  297. honest,

  298. and so on.

  299. We're not

  300. all together

  301. in the expression

  302. of our sinful nature

  303. as terrible

  304. as we might

  305. be

  306. because God

  307. is kind

  308. even to those

  309. who aren't His.

  310. However,

  311. no matter how good

  312. someone might be,

  313. no matter how

  314. altruistic

  315. one might show themselves,

  316. they will never

  317. be perfect.

  318. and this

  319. is righteousness.

  320. We've already proven

  321. that we're not

  322. perfect.

  323. Likely this morning,

  324. you and I,

  325. whether known

  326. or unknown,

  327. have proven

  328. that we are not

  329. perfect.

  330. You and I,

  331. by our strongest

  332. of labors,

  333. cannot even measure

  334. up to the standard

  335. of perfect law-keeping

  336. because,

  337. apart from Christ,

  338. our very character,

  339. our very nature

  340. was corrupted.

  341. Jesus says

  342. in Matthew 5

  343. and verse 48,

  344. you,

  345. therefore,

  346. must be perfect

  347. as your heavenly

  348. Father

  349. is

  350. perfect.

  351. If you do not

  352. measure up

  353. to the perfection

  354. of God,

  355. then you

  356. cannot be

  357. accepted

  358. by

  359. God.

  360. This

  361. is bad

  362. news.

  363. but it's

  364. bad news

  365. meant to

  366. press us

  367. to the

  368. good news

  369. that the

  370. Lord Jesus

  371. Christ

  372. is the

  373. perfect

  374. law-keeper.

  375. We need an

  376. alien righteousness.

  377. Chapter 1

  378. and verse 17,

  379. the righteousness

  380. of God

  381. to be granted

  382. to us.

  383. A second

  384. category of

  385. charges

  386. have to do

  387. with

  388. mankind's

  389. words.

  390. And we see

  391. these in

  392. verses 13

  393. and 14.

  394. There Paul

  395. says,

  396. their throat

  397. is an

  398. open grave.

  399. They use

  400. their tongues

  401. to deceive.

  402. The venom

  403. of asps

  404. is under

  405. their lips.

  406. Their mouth

  407. is full

  408. of curses

  409. and bitterness.

  410. Jesus

  411. says in

  412. Matthew 12

  413. that out of

  414. the abundance

  415. of the heart,

  416. the mouth

  417. speaks.

  418. And we

  419. are so

  420. very

  421. expressively

  422. wicked

  423. in the way

  424. that we

  425. speak.

  426. Paul is

  427. presenting

  428. that same

  429. principle here

  430. that out of

  431. the abundance

  432. of the heart,

  433. the mouth

  434. speaks.

  435. Because of

  436. your character,

  437. your words

  438. are evil

  439. and your

  440. evil words

  441. give evidence

  442. of your

  443. evil

  444. character.

  445. It's the

  446. fruit that

  447. comes out

  448. of a

  449. corrupted

  450. nature.

  451. Fallen

  452. man is

  453. deceptive.

  454. They use

  455. their tongues

  456. to deceive.

  457. Seats

  458. the destruction

  459. of,

  460. is publicly

  461. critical of,

  462. and expresses

  463. hostility

  464. towards

  465. others.

  466. The venom

  467. of asps,

  468. destructive,

  469. mouthful

  470. of curses

  471. and bitterness,

  472. critical

  473. and hostile

  474. towards others.

  475. take a

  476. ride with

  477. somebody

  478. who claims

  479. to be a

  480. Christian

  481. in the

  482. car

  483. and you'll

  484. see some

  485. of this

  486. come out

  487. of them.

  488. Ought

  489. not be

  490. so.

  491. He states

  492. at the

  493. beginning

  494. of verse

  495. 13 that

  496. their throat

  497. is an

  498. open

  499. grave,

  500. which is

  501. to say

  502. you can

  503. look into

  504. their mouths

  505. and see

  506. the dead

  507. man

  508. inside.

  509. Third

  510. category.

  511. we see

  512. in verses

  513. 15-17

  514. which is

  515. that their

  516. actions,

  517. their feet

  518. are swift

  519. to shed

  520. blood,

  521. in their

  522. paths

  523. are ruin

  524. and misery,

  525. and the

  526. way of

  527. peace

  528. they have

  529. not known.

  530. In the

  531. same manner

  532. that Paul

  533. makes charges

  534. concerning

  535. mankind's

  536. words,

  537. he also

  538. does so

  539. with their

  540. actions.

  541. The

  542. things they

  543. do,

  544. the fruit

  545. you can't

  546. observe,

  547. speaks to

  548. who they

  549. are.

  550. Once again,

  551. Jesus says,

  552. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 7:17

  553. 7,

  554. verse 17

  555. and following,

  556. so every

  557. healthy tree

  558. bears good

  559. fruit,

  560. but the

  561. diseased

  562. tree bears

  563. bad

  564. fruit.

  565. A healthy

  566. tree cannot

  567. bear bad

  568. fruit,

  569. nor can a

  570. diseased

  571. tree bear

  572. good

  573. fruit.

  574. Every

  575. tree that

  576. does not

  577. bear good

  578. fruit is

  579. cut down

  580. and is

  581. thrown

  582. into the

  583. fire.

  584. Now,

  585. these actions

  586. are fairly

  587. self-explanatory,

  588. swift to

  589. shed blood,

  590. murderous,

  591. and their

  592. paths are

  593. ruin and

  594. misery,

  595. injustice,

  596. and the

  597. way of

  598. peace.

  599. Here,

  600. I don't

  601. think Paul

  602. is referring

  603. to the

  604. sense of

  605. peace,

  606. or a

  607. peace with

  608. God,

  609. but rather

  610. a peace

  611. amongst

  612. mankind.

  613. It

  614. categorically

  615. fits

  616. together.

  617. Mankind

  618. is inherently

  619. violent,

  620. destructive,

  621. and unjust.

  622. Christ.

  623. We can

  624. access

  625. examples

  626. from history

  627. and from

  628. the local

  629. news of

  630. yesterday.

  631. There's

  632. just

  633. evidence

  634. of this

  635. everywhere.

  636. A quick

  637. glimpse at

  638. what's going

  639. on in

  640. France right

  641. now,

  642. and you

  643. could say,

  644. oh,

  645. look at

  646. how swift

  647. to shed

  648. blood.

  649. Look at

  650. the path

  651. of ruin

  652. and misery,

  653. literal

  654. paths

  655. of ruin

  656. and misery

  657. and the

  658. lack

  659. of peace.

  660. But let

  661. us not

  662. allow

  663. ourselves

  664. off the

  665. hook

  666. from

  667. these

  668. charges.

  669. It's

  670. very easy

  671. to say,

  672. well,

  673. but not

  674. like

  675. them.

  676. And

  677. perhaps,

  678. in

  679. Jesus

  680. in

  681. Matthew

    Matthew 5:21

  682. chapter

  683. 5,

  684. verse

  685. 21,

  686. there

  687. says,

  688. you have

  689. heard that

  690. it was

  691. said to

  692. those of

  693. old,

  694. you shall

  695. not

  696. murder,

  697. and whoever

  698. murders will

  699. be liable

  700. to judgment.

  701. If you

  702. murder,

  703. you will

  704. be judged.

  705. And

  706. Jesus

  707. raises the

  708. bar and

  709. says,

  710. but I

  711. say to

  712. you that

  713. everyone who

  714. is angry

  715. with his

  716. brother will

  717. be liable

  718. to judgment.

  719. Whoever

  720. insults his

  721. brother will

  722. be liable

  723. to the

  724. council,

  725. and whoever

  726. says,

  727. you fool,

  728. will be

  729. liable to

  730. the hell

  731. of fire.

  732. You could

  733. sum that

  734. up to say,

  735. if you do

  736. these things,

  737. you also

  738. are guilty

  739. of murder.

  740. Quick

  741. to shed

  742. blood

  743. in the

  744. way

  745. that we

  746. act.

  747. After

  748. lobbing all

  749. these charges

  750. and making

  751. his accusation,

  752. Paul tells

  753. us the

  754. motive of

  755. it all.

  756. Verse

  757. 18,

  758. there is

  759. no fear

  760. of God

  761. before their

  762. eyes.

  763. They do

  764. not fear

  765. God.

  766. Robert

  767. Haldane,

  768. a Scottish

  769. theologian,

  770. wrote a

  771. really wonderful

  772. commentary on

  773. the book of

  774. Romans called

  775. Exposition of

  776. Romans.

  777. He wrote

  778. this,

  779. it is

  780. astonishing

  781. that men,

  782. while they

  783. acknowledge that

  784. there is a

  785. God,

  786. should act

  787. without any

  788. fear of

  789. his

  790. displeasure.

  791. Yet this

  792. is their

  793. character.

  794. They fear

  795. a worm of

  796. the dust

  797. like themselves,

  798. but disregard

  799. the most

  800. high.

  801. They are

  802. more afraid

  803. of man

  804. than of

  805. God,

  806. of his

  807. anger,

  808. his contempt,

  809. or ridicule.

  810. The fear

  811. of man

  812. prevents them

  813. from doing

  814. many things

  815. from which

  816. they are

  817. not restrained

  818. by the

  819. fear of

  820. God.

  821. They love

  822. not his

  823. character,

  824. not rendering

  825. to it

  826. veneration,

  827. which is

  828. due.

  829. They respect

  830. not his

  831. authority.

  832. Such is

  833. the state

  834. of human

  835. nature

  836. while the

  837. heart

  838. is

  839. unchanged.

  840. There is

  841. the bad

  842. news,

  843. right?

  844. By very

  845. nature

  846. turned away

  847. from a

  848. fear

  849. of God.

  850. And this

  851. is a

  852. puzzling

  853. thing.

  854. Beloved,

  855. we have

  856. been

  857. created.

  858. Chapter

  859. 1,

  860. Paul says

  861. that it's

  862. evidenced

  863. that this

  864. is the

  865. case.

  866. There is

  867. a God

  868. who has

  869. created,

  870. and yet

  871. the

  872. unrighteousness

  873. of man

  874. suppresses

  875. that truth,

  876. and God

  877. gives

  878. mankind

  879. over

  880. to that

  881. foolishness.

  882. What a

  883. tragic thing.

  884. And if

  885. you're in

  886. Christ this

  887. morning,

  888. it's who

  889. you once

  890. were.

  891. And so

  892. we have

  893. such reason

  894. to praise

  895. God for

  896. the gospel

  897. of Jesus.

  898. If you

  899. are not

  900. now in

  901. Christ,

  902. it's who

  903. you are.

  904. I pray

  905. that you

  906. would listen

  907. to the

  908. words of

  909. Paul.

  910. So Paul

  911. brings this

  912. accusation,

  913. and then he

  914. delivers

  915. a verdict.

  916. Second

  917. point.

  918. First he

  919. says,

  920. now we

  921. know that

  922. whatever the

  923. law says,

  924. it speaks

  925. to those

  926. who are

  927. under

  928. the

  929. law,

  930. so that

  931. every

  932. mouth

  933. may be

  934. stopped.

  935. So he's

  936. talking again

  937. to Jewish

  938. people

  939. specifically,

  940. and I'm

  941. always

  942. tempted,

  943. it's probably

  944. proper to

  945. draw it to

  946. our context,

  947. for people

  948. who mostly

  949. grew up

  950. in church,

  951. mostly grew

  952. up being

  953. taught

  954. God's

  955. word.

  956. Not every

  957. one of us

  958. I know,

  959. but for the

  960. most part

  961. we have.

  962. So what

  963. purpose does

  964. it serve

  965. us?

  966. We would

  967. know that

  968. we're sinful,

  969. right?

  970. Every mouth

  971. would be

  972. stopped,

  973. and the

  974. whole world,

  975. last part

  976. of verse

  977. 19,

  978. may be

  979. held

  980. accountable

  981. to

  982. God.

  983. For by

  984. works of

  985. the law

  986. no human

  987. being will

  988. be justified

  989. in his

  990. sight,

  991. since through

  992. the law

  993. comes

  994. knowledge

  995. of sin.

  996. To be

  997. justified

  998. before God

  999. is to be

  1000. declared

  1001. righteous.

  1002. To be

  1003. declared

  1004. righteous.

  1005. And there

  1006. are two

  1007. parts to

  1008. the equation

  1009. of our

  1010. justification.

  1011. Firstly,

  1012. our sin

  1013. must be

  1014. forgiven.

  1015. If you

  1016. were to

  1017. stand before

  1018. a judge

  1019. and he

  1020. would declare

  1021. you justified,

  1022. he would

  1023. have to

  1024. first

  1025. forgive

  1026. your sin,

  1027. your sin

  1028. expunged

  1029. from

  1030. the record.

  1031. But for

  1032. God to

  1033. maintain

  1034. his justice

  1035. as a

  1036. judge,

  1037. he can't

  1038. simply dismiss

  1039. it altogether.

  1040. He must

  1041. punish it.

  1042. If he's

  1043. going to

  1044. be a

  1045. perfect

  1046. judge,

  1047. it must

  1048. be

  1049. punished.

  1050. And this

  1051. is why

  1052. the Lord

  1053. Jesus

  1054. Christ

  1055. came

  1056. and died

  1057. to bear

  1058. our

  1059. punishment

  1060. on our

  1061. behalf.

  1062. But if

  1063. we stop

  1064. there,

  1065. we are

  1066. only brought

  1067. up to

  1068. neutral.

  1069. The record

  1070. has been

  1071. canceled,

  1072. but now

  1073. we stand

  1074. with nothing.

  1075. We need

  1076. something

  1077. credited

  1078. to our

  1079. account

  1080. in order

  1081. to be

  1082. declared

  1083. righteous,

  1084. to be

  1085. justified.

  1086. What do

  1087. we need?

  1088. We need

  1089. perfect

  1090. law keeping.

  1091. We need

  1092. righteousness.

  1093. A thing

  1094. that's clearly

  1095. being established

  1096. that we

  1097. cannot do.

  1098. If you have

  1099. any doubt

  1100. of that,

  1101. go back

  1102. to the

  1103. beginning

  1104. of chapter

  1105. 1 and

  1106. read through

  1107. the end

  1108. of verse

  1109. 20 of

  1110. chapter 3.

  1111. Paul is

  1112. being so

  1113. very clear.

  1114. You

  1115. cannot

  1116. do it.

  1117. You

  1118. have

  1119. failed

  1120. and you

  1121. will

  1122. always

  1123. fail

  1124. under

  1125. your

  1126. own

  1127. power

  1128. to

  1129. live

  1130. up

  1131. to

  1132. the

  1133. demands

  1134. of

  1135. the

  1136. law.

  1137. And so,

  1138. by faith,

  1139. not only does

  1140. Christ take

  1141. our punishment

  1142. from us,

  1143. but he

  1144. also gives

  1145. to us

  1146. his

  1147. righteousness.

  1148. The doctrine

  1149. is called

  1150. double

  1151. imputation.

  1152. He takes

  1153. away,

  1154. it's given

  1155. to him

  1156. our sin,

  1157. he gives

  1158. to us

  1159. his

  1160. righteousness.

  1161. this

  1162. will

  1163. not

  1164. happen

  1165. by

  1166. the

  1167. works

  1168. of

  1169. the

  1170. law.

  1171. And

  1172. the

  1173. whole

  1174. world

  1175. will

  1176. stand

  1177. before

  1178. God

  1179. in

  1180. judgment.

  1181. There he

  1182. says,

  1183. the whole

  1184. world

  1185. will be

  1186. held

  1187. accountable

  1188. to

  1189. God.

  1190. Remember

  1191. back in

  1192. chapter 1

  1193. in verse

  1194. 18,

  1195. Paul says,

  1196. the wrath

  1197. of God

  1198. is revealed

  1199. from heaven

  1200. against

  1201. all

  1202. ungodliness

  1203. and

  1204. unrighteousness

  1205. of men.

  1206. On

  1207. that great

  1208. day of

  1209. judgment,

  1210. you will

  1211. not be

  1212. able to

  1213. stand

  1214. before

  1215. God

  1216. and

  1217. make

  1218. an

  1219. appeal

  1220. to

  1221. your

  1222. attempt

  1223. to

  1224. keep

  1225. his

  1226. law.

  1227. It

  1228. would

  1229. be

  1230. a

  1231. waste

  1232. of

  1233. breath.

  1234. I

  1235. believe

  1236. that

  1237. when

  1238. you

  1239. stand

  1240. before

  1241. him

  1242. on

  1243. that

  1244. day,

  1245. you

  1246. won't

  1247. try

  1248. to

  1249. make

  1250. an

  1251. appeal

  1252. to

  1253. your

  1254. attempt

  1255. to

  1256. keep

  1257. his

  1258. law.

  1259. For

  1260. by

  1261. works

  1262. of

  1263. the

  1264. law,

  1265. no

  1266. human

  1267. being

  1268. will

  1269. be

  1270. justified

  1271. in

  1272. his

  1273. sight.

  1274. The

  1275. law

  1276. makes

  1277. us

  1278. aware

  1279. of

  1280. our

  1281. failure,

  1282. of

  1283. our

  1284. sinfulness.

  1285. That's

  1286. the

  1287. bad

  1288. news.

  1289. On

  1290. that

  1291. great

  1292. day

  1293. of

  1294. judgment,

  1295. the

  1296. law

  1297. will

  1298. only

  1299. serve

  1300. to

  1301. show

  1302. you

  1303. guilty

  1304. for

  1305. your

  1306. failure

  1307. to

  1308. keep

  1309. it

  1310. perfectly.

  1311. So

  1312. we

  1313. must

  1314. make

  1315. our

  1316. appeal

  1317. elsewhere.

  1318. And

  1319. this

  1320. is

  1321. the

  1322. good

  1323. news

  1324. of

  1325. the

  1326. gospel.

  1327. And

  1328. we

  1329. will

  1330. be

  1331. unpacking

  1332. this

  1333. at

  1334. length

  1335. in

  1336. the

  1337. coming

  1338. months,

  1339. beginning

  1340. next

  1341. week.

  1342. But

  1343. we

  1344. can't

  1345. just

  1346. in

  1347. there.

  1348. Can

  1349. we?

  1350. What

  1351. is

  1352. the

  1353. appeal

  1354. I've

  1355. mentioned

  1356. already?

  1357. It's

  1358. the

  1359. person

  1360. and

  1361. the

  1362. work

  1363. of

  1364. the

  1365. Lord

  1366. Jesus

  1367. Christ.

  1368. We

  1369. will

  1370. say,

  1371. look,

  1372. I

  1373. am

  1374. forgiven

  1375. and

  1376. clothed

  1377. in

  1378. the

  1379. righteousness

  1380. of

  1381. Christ.

  1382. Jesus

  1383. will

  1384. stand

  1385. there

  1386. in

  1387. approval

  1388. of

  1389. such

  1390. a

  1391. claim

  1392. if

  1393. we

  1394. are

  1395. in

  1396. fact

  1397. found

  1398. in

  1399. him.

  1400. And

  1401. so

  1402. let's

  1403. look

  1404. just

  1405. briefly

  1406. at

  1407. the

  1408. next

  1409. two

  1410. verses

  1411. beyond

  1412. today's

  1413. text.

  1414. Paul

  1415. has

  1416. completed

  1417. this

  1418. stage

  1419. in his

  1420. argument

  1421. and he's

  1422. moving on.

  1423. Remember,

  1424. still unpacking

  1425. this idea

  1426. of the

  1427. gospel

  1428. being the

  1429. righteousness

  1430. of God

  1431. for us.

  1432. A thing

  1433. that we

  1434. should be

  1435. proud of,

  1436. right?

  1437. That the

  1438. righteous

  1439. might live

  1440. by faith.

  1441. A faith

  1442. that's given

  1443. to us

  1444. as a

  1445. gift

  1446. in

  1447. Christ.

  1448. So he

  1449. says

  1450. in verse

  1451. 21,

  1452. but now

  1453. the

  1454. righteousness

  1455. of

  1456. God,

  1457. it's

  1458. God's

  1459. righteousness,

  1460. has been

  1461. manifested

  1462. apart

  1463. from the

  1464. law.

  1465. The

  1466. righteousness

  1467. of God

  1468. has been

  1469. manifested

  1470. apart

  1471. from the

  1472. law.

  1473. He is

  1474. referring

  1475. to

  1476. Jesus

  1477. Christ's

  1478. perfect

  1479. law

  1480. keeping.

  1481. It has

  1482. been

  1483. made

  1484. manifested.

  1485. It has

  1486. been shown

  1487. in

  1488. Christ.

  1489. Although

  1490. the

  1491. law

  1492. and

  1493. the

  1494. prophets

  1495. bear

  1496. witness

  1497. to

  1498. it.

  1499. The

  1500. law

  1501. and

  1502. the

  1503. prophets,

  1504. the whole

  1505. New Testament,

  1506. point us

  1507. to

  1508. Christ

  1509. and His

  1510. righteousness,

  1511. the righteousness

  1512. of

  1513. God.

  1514. The

  1515. righteousness

  1516. of God

  1517. through

  1518. faith

  1519. in Jesus

  1520. Christ

  1521. for all

  1522. who

  1523. believe.

  1524. And this

  1525. is the

  1526. cost

  1527. of

  1528. justification

  1529. that we

  1530. would merely

  1531. turn from

  1532. our sin

  1533. and place

  1534. our faith

  1535. in the

  1536. Lord

  1537. Jesus

  1538. Christ.

  1539. That we

  1540. would

  1541. understand

  1542. that yes,

  1543. apart from

  1544. Him,

  1545. I am

  1546. altogether

  1547. unworthy.

  1548. I am

  1549. totally

  1550. depraved

  1551. apart

  1552. from

  1553. Christ.

  1554. I do

  1555. not

  1556. seek

  1557. good.

  1558. I am

  1559. part of

  1560. the no

  1561. one

  1562. that Paul

  1563. here

  1564. is talking

  1565. about.

  1566. But yet,

  1567. through

  1568. faith

  1569. in

  1570. Christ,

  1571. I can

  1572. be

  1573. declared

  1574. righteous

  1575. before

  1576. God,

  1577. accepted

  1578. into

  1579. His

  1580. loving

  1581. arms

  1582. forever.

  1583. Let's

  1584. pray

  1585. together.
