  1. Please join me if you would in your copy of God's Word in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today's study will be Romans chapter 3 verses 21 through 31.

    Romans 3:21–31

  3. We have spent quite a bit of time in our study of the book of Romans considering the guilt of all mankind.

  4. Paul begins making this case in chapter 1 and verse 18 where he states,

  5. For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

  6. And he concludes his case at verse 20 of last week's text in chapter 3.

  7. He wants to be so clear that anyone, whether Jewish, of Jewish descent or otherwise, lives under the curse of sin.

  8. He says in Romans chapter 2 and verse 12,

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  9. For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law.

  10. And all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

  11. I stated last week that he is doing all of this because this is the reasonable starting point from which to prove his thesis,

  12. which we will look at thoroughly and repeatedly throughout the entirety of this letter,

  13. in which he states in chapter 1 verse 16 and 17,

  14. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  15. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  16. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,

  17. as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  18. He is going to unpack that across all these chapters of the book of Romans.

  19. If you have been hearing anything that Paul is saying in these first three chapters,

  20. then you will understand that the unfortunate state of your soul,

  21. apart from the intervening work of Jesus Christ,

  22. is a desperate state because the wrath of God awaits you.

  23. And this is a frightful thing.

  24. And this is the due penalty for our sin.

  25. It's good and proper that God would punish rebellious people.

  26. All of mankind has a huge problem that only finds its remedy in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  27. But praise be to God that we have reached the point in Paul's writing

  28. where he begins to unpack the good news of his thesis,

  29. now having spent such time on the bad news.

  30. But we must know the bad news for the good news to be as good as it truly is.

  31. Martin Luther said of Romans chapter 3, verse 21 through 31,

    Romans 3:21–31

  32. that it is the chief point and the very central place of the epistle and of the whole Bible.

  33. I do hope that you will engage with the text this morning to either,

  34. number one, believe for the first time in the gospel of Jesus Christ

  35. and find the remedy for your sinful state,

  36. or, number two, to be encouraged by the gospel of Jesus Christ

  37. and pressed into grateful service.

  38. So let's read the text together.

  39. If you'll follow along with me before I read it,

  40. let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  41. It was written for his glory and our good,

  42. so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  43. and to obey its commands.

  44. Paul says,

  45. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law,

  46. although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.

  47. The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

  48. For there is no distinction.

  49. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

  50. and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

  51. whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith.

  52. This was to show God's righteousness,

  53. because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

  54. It was to show his righteousness at the present time

  55. so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  56. Then what becomes of our boasting?

  57. It is excluded.

  58. By what kind of law?

  59. By a law of works?

  60. No, but by the law of faith.

  61. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

  62. Or is God the God of Jews only?

  63. Is he not the God of Gentiles also?

  64. Yes, of Gentiles also,

  65. since God is one,

  66. who will justify the circumcised by faith

  67. and the uncircumcised through faith.

  68. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith?

  69. By no means.

  70. On the contrary,

  71. we uphold the law.

  72. Now, this is a lot of text.

  73. And this morning I will divide the text into two halves,

  74. each with some additional divisions.

  75. We have quite a bit of ground to cover,

  76. so I'll move fairly quickly.

  77. In fact, these 11 verses,

  78. I think could have warranted three sermons.

  79. It's kind of where my mind was settling in on it.

  80. But I'm going to take a sabbatical starting tomorrow

  81. and we'll be gone for a month.

  82. And I really want to finish chapter 3.

  83. I really want to talk about the entirety of the text.

  84. And it would be really disjointed, I think,

  85. to only do a bit of it

  86. and wait a whole month to pick back up on the rest of it.

  87. And so I'm telling you all of this

  88. so that you'll buckle in and get ready

  89. because we're going to move fairly quickly through the text.

  90. So the two kind of simple divisions for the text,

  91. number one is doctrine.

  92. This is a good old puritanical division here.

  93. Number one, doctrine, we find in verses 21 through 26.

  94. And number two, application,

  95. which we find in verses 27 through the end of the chapter.

  96. So let's look first at the doctrine in the text.

  97. We see this phrase at the beginning of verse 21,

  98. the righteousness of God,

  99. which if you've been sitting in our teaching of Romans

  100. should sound familiar to you.

  101. This exact phrasing, the righteousness of God.

  102. I hope that it sends off signals in your mind.

  103. Where have we heard it?

  104. Even just this morning, did we not hear it?

  105. In Romans chapter 1 and verse 17.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  106. Verse 16, Paul says he's not ashamed of the gospel

  107. or he's proud of the gospel

  108. because it's the power of God for salvation.

  109. For, verse 17,

  110. in it the righteousness of God is revealed

  111. from faith for faith, right?

  112. So he's come back to this idea, right?

  113. He's continuing to explain what he means

  114. by the righteousness of God.

  115. Paul has been laboring to tell us

  116. why we cannot accomplish the righteousness required by God

  117. so that we will seek to understand

  118. that we need the righteousness of God.

  119. If that word for you is new,

  120. think right living.

  121. Perfect right living would be a way perhaps to say it.

  122. I will tell you this week

  123. that my hands got pretty good

  124. at typing out the word righteousness.

  125. I got as many times as I had to correct it.

  126. It's a more complicated word

  127. than perhaps it needs to be,

  128. but it's a biblical word

  129. so we need to understand it.

  130. So think perfect right living.

  131. We can't do this on our own.

  132. We need a righteousness

  133. that comes from outside ourselves.

  134. A righteousness that Luther called

  135. an alien righteousness,

  136. a foreign righteousness.

  137. But not just any.

  138. If we are to stand in the day of judgment,

  139. we will need a particular righteousness,

  140. the righteousness of God.

  141. If we are to survive God's perfect judgment,

  142. then we must be perfect.

  143. And we will not accomplish this of our own effort.

  144. And, praise be to God,

  145. we don't have to.

  146. For we have and would utterly fail to do so.

  147. This consideration of the righteousness of God

  148. is salve to a weary soul.

  149. We all know that apart from the righteousness of God,

  150. we are all guilty before God.

  151. Look up just a couple of verses from today's text,

  152. verse 19 and 20.

  153. There Paul says,

  154. Now we know that whatever the law says,

  155. it speaks to those who are under the law

  156. so that every mouth may be stopped

  157. and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

  158. For by works of the law,

  159. no human being will be justified in his sight

  160. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  161. We have littles sitting in our hearing right now,

  162. and perhaps many of them

  163. aren't really aware of their sinfulness.

  164. But if you are not a little,

  165. if you understand the things

  166. that are coming out of my mouth right now,

  167. you are fully aware

  168. that you have done things that are wrong.

  169. You have been told that they are wrong,

  170. and you agree that they were wrong.

  171. This is the way that the law serves us,

  172. to help us to know that we are sinners,

  173. to make evident our guilt,

  174. and to point us somewhere else,

  175. to take us outside of ourselves,

  176. to look elsewhere for righteousness.

  177. It points us to the righteousness of God,

  178. or we hope and pray that it does.

  179. In the first six verses of today's text,

  180. Paul tells us seven things

  181. about the righteousness of God.

  182. So, those of you who are more familiar

  183. with my outlines,

  184. here we actually go.

  185. Number one,

  186. and these will be brief.

  187. Number one,

  188. the righteousness of God

  189. is not found in the law.

  190. First half of verse 21.

  191. Paul has repeated this quite a bit

  192. throughout the end of chapter 2,

  193. and now he's saying it again.

  194. Now, the righteousness of God

  195. has been manifested apart from the law.

  196. So, we have seen the righteousness of God,

  197. but it didn't come from the law.

  198. It came apart from the law.

  199. Now, this has been largely established

  200. over the past weeks

  201. and previous texts of Romans.

  202. We cannot be made righteous by the law

  203. because we cannot keep the law.

  204. It's not possible

  205. that we might have the righteousness of God

  206. because we inherited a nature.

  207. We are inclined to sin.

  208. And as I've said,

  209. we all have.

  210. Romans 3 and verse 10,

  211. there Paul says,

  212. none is righteous,

  213. no, not one.

  214. So, this righteousness of God

  215. is not found in keeping God's law.

  216. Second thing Paul tells us

  217. about the righteousness of God

  218. is that it is spoken of

  219. in the Old Testament.

  220. And there's an inclination in me

  221. to spend an entire week

  222. on the last half of verse 21,

  223. but I won't.

  224. I'm reigning it in for you.

  225. But there he says,

  226. although the law and the prophets

  227. bear witness,

  228. to it.

  229. And if you're looking at an ESV,

  230. copy of God's Word,

  231. you will see law and prophets

  232. capitalized in the last half of verse 21,

  233. but law in lowercase

  234. in the first half.

  235. Why might the translators

  236. have made this decision?

  237. The Greek certainly

  238. wasn't capitalized or not.

  239. They did so because

  240. Paul here is referring to

  241. the law as God's moral law

  242. in the first part of verse 21,

  243. but in the last part,

  244. he's talking about the Scripture

  245. in total.

  246. It's a very common phrase

  247. to refer to the Bible of Paul's day

  248. as the law and the prophets.

  249. So the law doesn't serve

  250. our righteousness

  251. by keeping it,

  252. but it does,

  253. the law,

  254. the Bible itself,

  255. bears witness to it,

  256. to the righteousness

  257. of God.

  258. Specifically,

  259. it bears witness

  260. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  261. Christ,

  262. this righteousness

  263. that's been manifested

  264. apart from the law.

  265. The God-man,

  266. Jesus Christ,

  267. who lived the life

  268. that's required of us,

  269. that we might have

  270. his righteousness.

  271. This is who the law

  272. and prophets

  273. bear witness to.

  274. Jesus is the snake crusher

  275. of Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  276. He is the Passover lamb

  277. of Exodus 12.

  278. He is the defeater

  279. of our enemy

  280. in 1 Samuel 17.

  281. He is the price paid

  282. for Gomer

  283. in Hosea chapter 3.

    Hosea 3 chapter mention

  284. He is the greater Moses

  285. and the greater David.

  286. The whole of the Bible,

  287. I want to give you

  288. a thousand more examples,

  289. is meant to press our minds

  290. to the coming,

  291. now arrived,

  292. and soon coming again

  293. King Jesus.

  294. of great value.

  295. And the Jews

  296. of Paul's day

  297. loved the Scripture.

  298. They tried to orient

  299. their lives by it.

  300. They thought that

  301. in the Bible itself

  302. they might become righteous.

  303. And Paul's unraveling

  304. that for them.

  305. And I think in our day,

  306. a people

  307. who have much

  308. of the Bible

  309. access to it

  310. in many ways

  311. and forms.

  312. It's just incredible

  313. the way you can access

  314. the Scripture.

  315. in our day.

  316. That we would think

  317. that in them

  318. we have righteousness

  319. when they are pointing us

  320. to Christ.

  321. Jesus said to the Pharisees

  322. in John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  323. and verse 39,

  324. you search the Scriptures

  325. because you think

  326. that in them

  327. you have

  328. eternal life.

  329. And he's not condemning

  330. the search of the Scriptures.

  331. What a wonderful thing to do,

  332. to spend our lives

  333. in this text.

  334. But they thought

  335. the text itself

  336. was providing

  337. eternal life for them

  338. and their feeble attempts

  339. to obey it.

  340. And he goes on to say,

  341. and it is they

  342. that bear witness

  343. about me.

  344. The law and the prophets

  345. bear witness,

  346. notice the phrasing

  347. is the same,

  348. to Christ

  349. himself,

  350. the righteousness

  351. of God.

  352. The third thing

  353. that Paul says

  354. about the righteousness

  355. of God

  356. is that it is granted

  357. through faith.

  358. You see this

  359. in the first part

  360. of verse 22.

  361. The righteousness

  362. of God

  363. through faith

  364. in Jesus Christ

  365. for all

  366. who believe.

  367. I have stated

  368. and will state

  369. repeatedly

  370. that the theme

  371. of this letter

  372. is that we are justified

  373. by grace alone

  374. through faith alone

  375. in Jesus Christ

  376. alone.

  377. It is by believing

  378. in the person

  379. and the work

  380. of Jesus.

  381. Both

  382. who he is

  383. and the things

  384. that he accomplish

  385. that we have

  386. the record

  387. of our sins

  388. expunged

  389. and are granted

  390. the righteousness

  391. of God.

  392. Our guilt

  393. record

  394. taken away,

  395. Jesus paid the penalty

  396. for that sin

  397. and he has given

  398. to us

  399. his perfect

  400. law keeping.

  401. This is that

  402. alien righteousness

  403. that we need

  404. to stand before God

  405. in the day of judgment.

  406. You cannot merely

  407. believe whatever

  408. you may want

  409. despite what our

  410. pluralistic society

  411. may tell you.

  412. If you are to be

  413. saved from God's wrath

  414. and reconcile to him,

  415. you must do so

  416. on his terms.

  417. Jesus says in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  418. chapter 14

  419. and verse 6,

  420. I am the way

  421. and the truth

  422. and the life.

  423. No one

  424. comes to the Father

  425. except

  426. through

  427. me.

  428. What's he talking

  429. about there?

  430. Except by believing

  431. in who I am

  432. and what I have

  433. accomplished

  434. on behalf

  435. of all those

  436. who will

  437. believe.

  438. So the righteousness

  439. of God

  440. is granted

  441. through

  442. faith.

  443. Fourthly,

  444. the righteousness

  445. of God

  446. is not

  447. partial.

  448. You see this

  449. in verse 22,

  450. the last part,

  451. and into

  452. verse 23.

  453. There Paul says,

  454. for there is

  455. no

  456. distinction.

  457. For all have

  458. sinned

  459. and fall short

  460. of the glory

  461. of God.

  462. So regardless

  463. of your

  464. ethnic identity

  465. or nationality,

  466. no matter

  467. your background,

  468. you are a son

  469. or daughter

  470. of Adam

  471. and therefore

  472. guilty of the

  473. sin of Adam

  474. and your own

  475. sin on top

  476. of that.

  477. But,

  478. regardless

  479. of your ethnic

  480. identity

  481. or nationality,

  482. no matter

  483. your background,

  484. you can be

  485. called a son

  486. or daughter

  487. of God

  488. by faith

  489. in a faithful

  490. older brother.

  491. There's no

  492. distinction made

  493. by the free

  494. offer of the

  495. gospel of

  496. Jesus Christ.

  497. It does not

  498. matter from

  499. where you

  500. came.

  501. God created

  502. you and he

  503. calls you to

  504. himself to

  505. believe in the

  506. gospel of

  507. Jesus.

  508. Fifthly,

  509. we see that

  510. the righteousness

  511. of God is

  512. acquired by

  513. grace.

  514. grace.

  515. It is

  516. acquired by

  517. grace.

  518. The first

  519. part of

  520. verse 24.

  521. We are

  522. justified.

  523. There's that

  524. word I

  525. explained a

  526. moment ago.

  527. By his

  528. grace as

  529. a gift.

  530. And the

  531. word grace

  532. means this

  533. free gifting

  534. of something

  535. for our

  536. favor.

  537. But Paul

  538. wants to be

  539. sure that we

  540. understand that

  541. it is a

  542. gift.

  543. We're

  544. justified by

  545. his grace

  546. as a

  547. gift.

  548. Justified by

  549. grace alone,

  550. through faith

  551. alone,

  552. in Christ

  553. alone.

  554. This is not a

  555. thing that we

  556. muster up on

  557. our own.

  558. Belief in the

  559. gospel of

  560. Jesus Christ

  561. is a gift

  562. that is

  563. granted to

  564. us.

  565. Oh, that

  566. God would

  567. grant it to

  568. us all.

  569. Paul tells

  570. elsewhere,

  571. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  572. chapter 2

  573. and verse

  574. 8, for

  575. by grace

  576. you have

  577. been saved

  578. through faith.

  579. And this,

  580. he's referring

  581. there to the

  582. faith, is

  583. not your

  584. own doing,

  585. it is the

  586. gift of

  587. God.

  588. The gracious

  589. gift of

  590. God is the

  591. faith itself

  592. that we

  593. would believe

  594. in the

  595. gospel of

  596. Jesus Christ.

  597. The sixth

  598. thing that we

  599. learn from

  600. Paul about

  601. the righteousness

  602. of God is

  603. that it is

  604. bought with

  605. a price.

  606. The last

  607. part of

  608. verse 24

  609. says,

  610. through the

  611. redemption

  612. that is in

  613. Christ Jesus.

  614. Now, the

  615. word for

  616. redemption was

  617. often used

  618. of paying a

  619. price to

  620. free a

  621. captive from

  622. his captors

  623. or to

  624. free a

  625. slave from

  626. his master.

  627. Often, the

  628. person who

  629. carried that

  630. price was

  631. called a

  632. redeemer.

  633. You may have

  634. heard of

  635. Jesus being

  636. called the

  637. redeemer, and

  638. he is both

  639. the redeemer

  640. and he is

  641. the redemption

  642. price itself.

  643. We who

  644. once, or

  645. this morning

  646. perhaps are

  647. enslaved to

  648. sin, held

  649. captive by the

  650. ruler of this

  651. world, Jesus

  652. has paid the

  653. penalty, paid

  654. the price that

  655. we might be

  656. redeemed.

  657. Paul writes

  658. in Colossians

    Colossians 1:13

  659. chapter 1

  660. verse 13

  661. and following,

  662. Jesus has

  663. delivered us

  664. from the

  665. domain of

  666. darkness, the

  667. ruling of

  668. darkness, and

  669. transferred us

  670. to the kingdom

  671. of his beloved

  672. son, in whom

  673. we have

  674. redemption,

  675. the forgiveness

  676. righteousness, of

  677. sins.

  678. Jesus paid the

  679. penalty for our

  680. sin with his

  681. own life, bearing

  682. on our behalf

  683. all of the

  684. wrath that was

  685. due to our

  686. sin.

  687. The seventh

  688. thing that we

  689. learn, the

  690. righteousness of

  691. God is purchased

  692. by an atoning

  693. sacrifice.

  694. sacrifice.

  695. And we see

  696. this in verse

  697. 25 and 26.

  698. Here Paul says

  699. that through the

  700. redemption that

  701. is in Christ

  702. Jesus, whom

  703. God put forward

  704. as a

  705. propitiation by

  706. his blood to

  707. be received

  708. by faith.

  709. Propitiation, not

  710. an easy word to

  711. say and not

  712. often used, but

  713. I hope it's a

  714. word that will

  715. be loved by

  716. you.

  717. A

  718. propitiation.

  719. The word

  720. propitiation carries

  721. with it the

  722. idea of

  723. appeasement or

  724. satisfaction of

  725. wrath.

  726. Wrath that was

  727. due us.

  728. Wrath that all

  729. those who die

  730. and stand before

  731. the judgment of

  732. God, apart from

  733. Christ, will

  734. suffer eternal

  735. wrath for the

  736. appeasement of

  737. God.

  738. God is

  739. just and he

  740. is right to

  741. punish sin.

  742. The Bible

  743. speaks much of

  744. this judgment and

  745. of the wrath of

  746. God.

  747. We see it in

  748. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 14:17

  749. 14 verse 17

  750. and following.

  751. John's vision, he

  752. says, then another

  753. angel came out of

  754. the temple in

  755. heaven and he

  756. too had a sharp

  757. sickle.

  758. And another

  759. angel came out

  760. from the altar,

  761. the angel who

  762. has authority over

  763. the fire, and he

  764. called with a loud

  765. voice to the one

  766. who had the sharp

  767. sickle.

  768. Put in your

  769. sickle and gather

  770. the clusters from

  771. the vine of the

  772. earth, for its

  773. grapes are ripe.

  774. So the angel

  775. swung his sickle

  776. across the earth

  777. and gathered the

  778. great harvest of

  779. the earth and

  780. threw it into the

  781. great winepress of

  782. the wrath of God.

  783. God, I think that

  784. should make all of

  785. us shudder.

  786. The idea of us as

  787. grapes being placed

  788. in a winepress.

  789. Grapes do not

  790. stand up to the

  791. pressure of a

  792. winepress.

  793. No grape has

  794. ever willed itself

  795. out of a winepress

  796. or pressed back

  797. against the

  798. smooshing of the

  799. grape.

  800. And then verse 20

  801. says, and the

  802. winepress was

  803. trodden outside

  804. the city and

  805. blood flowed from

  806. the winepress.

  807. John's vision

  808. turns off the

  809. metaphor to be

  810. very clear about

  811. what is meant

  812. by this judgment.

  813. Those who are

  814. not saved in

  815. Christ will be

  816. destroyed and

  817. will be destroyed

  818. forever,

  819. forever,

  820. continually,

  821. forever,

  822. to appease the

  823. wrath of God.

  824. But rather,

  825. in Christ,

  826. we have Christ

  827. as a

  828. propitiation,

  829. a satisfier of

  830. God's wrath

  831. for us.

  832. So that when we

  833. stand in the

  834. judgment,

  835. and we declare

  836. not a righteousness

  837. of our own,

  838. but a righteousness

  839. that is Christ

  840. that's granted

  841. to us,

  842. God doesn't

  843. punish our

  844. sin in

  845. us,

  846. because he

  847. already punished

  848. it in

  849. Christ.

  850. See,

  851. Paul goes on

  852. to say,

  853. this,

  854. this putting

  855. forth of

  856. Christ as the

  857. propitiation,

  858. was to show

  859. God's righteousness,

  860. his right

  861. living,

  862. right keeping,

  863. because in

  864. his divine

  865. forbearance,

  866. he had

  867. passed over

  868. former sins.

  869. What Paul is

  870. referring there

  871. is to people

  872. who were

  873. saved in

  874. Christ because

  875. they placed

  876. hope that

  877. somehow

  878. the sacrificial

  879. system,

  880. the slaying of

  881. lambs and

  882. bulls and

  883. goats,

  884. somehow was

  885. covering their

  886. sin.

  887. They believed

  888. in future

  889. promise.

  890. Also,

  891. it was to show

  892. his righteousness

  893. at the present

  894. time,

  895. so that

  896. he might

  897. be just,

  898. that he

  899. might rightly

  900. punish sin,

  901. and the

  902. justifier,

  903. the one who

  904. declares

  905. righteous,

  906. of the one

  907. who has

  908. faith in

  909. Jesus.

  910. And this is

  911. such an

  912. important thing

  913. to understand,

  914. that God

  915. does not

  916. merely dismiss

  917. our sin,

  918. right?

  919. He doesn't

  920. just overlook

  921. it and say,

  922. well,

  923. it's okay,

  924. because it's

  925. not okay.

  926. if God

  927. is to be a

  928. just judge,

  929. he must

  930. punish

  931. our sin.

  932. If we

  933. are to not

  934. be punished

  935. forever for

  936. our sin,

  937. somehow God

  938. has to punish

  939. our sin.

  940. How does

  941. he do it?

  942. By putting

  943. forth Jesus

  944. Christ as a

  945. propitiation.

  946. The God

  947. man,

  948. Jesus Christ,

  949. bearing the

  950. wrath of God

  951. on our behalf

  952. on the cross.

  953. All of

  954. God's wrath

  955. poured out

  956. on him

  957. that we

  958. might have

  959. our sins

  960. expunged

  961. and his

  962. righteousness

  963. given to

  964. us.

  965. I once

  966. heard this

  967. great analogy.

  968. If you've

  969. been here

  970. long,

  971. you've heard

  972. it before.

  973. I hope it

  974. won't bother

  975. you much

  976. to hear it

  977. again.

  978. Of

  979. imagining

  980. God's

  981. wrath,

  982. his eternal

  983. wrath that

  984. is due

  985. our sin,

  986. by imagining

  987. that you're

  988. standing in

  989. a dry river

  990. bed at the

  991. bottom of

  992. a massive

  993. dam.

  994. And this

  995. dam is

  996. holding back

  997. immense amounts

  998. of water.

  999. The dam is

  1000. so tall that

  1001. you can't

  1002. see the

  1003. height of

  1004. it,

  1005. and it's

  1006. so wide

  1007. to either

  1008. direction that

  1009. you can't

  1010. see the

  1011. end of it,

  1012. and you

  1013. know it

  1014. holds back

  1015. a crushing

  1016. weight.

  1017. And as you

  1018. stand there

  1019. and you

  1020. peer up at

  1021. this and

  1022. you consider

  1023. the weight

  1024. of the

  1025. water behind

  1026. this dam,

  1027. it begins

  1028. to crack

  1029. and suddenly

  1030. it bursts

  1031. forth.

  1032. And all

  1033. of that

  1034. water comes

  1035. bearing down

  1036. on you.

  1037. You're not

  1038. going to

  1039. outrun this

  1040. water.

  1041. There's

  1042. nothing that

  1043. you're going

  1044. to be able

  1045. to do

  1046. to escape

  1047. from the

  1048. crushing

  1049. weight of

  1050. this water.

  1051. And just

  1052. as it's

  1053. about to

  1054. crush you,

  1055. you close

  1056. your eyes,

  1057. you're ready

  1058. to take it

  1059. on,

  1060. a hole

  1061. opens up

  1062. in front

  1063. of you,

  1064. and all

  1065. of that

  1066. water goes

  1067. rushing to

  1068. your amazement

  1069. into this

  1070. massive hole

  1071. in front

  1072. of you.

  1073. It rushes

  1074. in,

  1075. it rushes

  1076. in,

  1077. it rushes

  1078. in.

  1079. And this

  1080. is what

  1081. Jesus did

  1082. on the

  1083. cross for

  1084. you if

  1085. you believe

  1086. by faith

  1087. that he

  1088. did.

  1089. He drinks

  1090. to the

  1091. very last

  1092. drop the

  1093. wrath of

  1094. God that

  1095. was due

  1096. you,

  1097. and when

  1098. he was

  1099. finished,

  1100. he turned

  1101. the cup

  1102. over,

  1103. he slammed

  1104. it down

  1105. and declared

  1106. it is

  1107. finished.

  1108. He

  1109. accomplished

  1110. that for

  1111. you if

  1112. you would

  1113. just

  1114. believe

  1115. in

  1116. him.

  1117. William

  1118. Reese

  1119. wrote

  1120. a wonderful

  1121. hymn,

  1122. maybe we'll

  1123. sing it here

  1124. someday,

  1125. called

  1126. Here is

  1127. Love

  1128. in 1876,

  1129. and this

  1130. is the

  1131. second verse

  1132. of that

  1133. song.

  1134. He writes,

  1135. on the

  1136. mount of

  1137. crucifixion

  1138. fountains

  1139. opened deep

  1140. and wide.

  1141. Through the

  1142. floodgates of

  1143. your mercy

  1144. flowed a

  1145. vast and

  1146. gracious tide.

  1147. Here is

  1148. love,

  1149. like mighty

  1150. rivers poured

  1151. unceasing

  1152. from above,

  1153. heaven's

  1154. peace and

  1155. perfect justice

  1156. kissed a

  1157. guilty world

  1158. in love.

  1159. The

  1160. righteousness

  1161. of God

  1162. is a thing

  1163. that each

  1164. of us

  1165. desperately

  1166. needs and

  1167. does not

  1168. deserve,

  1169. and yet

  1170. God has

  1171. loved his

  1172. creation enough

  1173. to make

  1174. a way that

  1175. we might

  1176. have it.

  1177. So there's

  1178. the doctrine.

  1179. Second big

  1180. point.

  1181. I just did

  1182. three.

  1183. Second big

  1184. point.

  1185. Application.

  1186. It must be

  1187. time for a

  1188. sabbatical if

  1189. I hold up

  1190. three fingers

  1191. and say

  1192. secondly.

  1193. Application.

  1194. So a few

  1195. things to

  1196. pull out of

  1197. the rest of

  1198. the text.

  1199. So beginning

  1200. in verse

  1201. 27,

  1202. the righteousness

  1203. of God

  1204. excludes

  1205. boasting

  1206. in ourselves.

  1207. Paul says

  1208. that very

  1209. frankly here

  1210. in verse

  1211. 27,

  1212. then what

  1213. becomes of

  1214. our boasting?

  1215. It's

  1216. excluded.

  1217. It cannot

  1218. exist.

  1219. By what

  1220. kind of

  1221. law?

  1222. By a

  1223. law of

  1224. works?

  1225. One that

  1226. we couldn't

  1227. keep?

  1228. No.

  1229. By a

  1230. law of

  1231. faith.

  1232. We have

  1233. believed that

  1234. someone else

  1235. did the work

  1236. for us,

  1237. and this

  1238. excludes

  1239. our

  1240. boasting.

  1241. Beloved,

  1242. we ought to

  1243. be the most

  1244. humble people

  1245. on the

  1246. planet.

  1247. Really

  1248. understanding

  1249. who we

  1250. once were

  1251. and what

  1252. has been

  1253. accomplished

  1254. for us

  1255. should make

  1256. us incredibly

  1257. humble.

  1258. For we

  1259. hold that

  1260. one is

  1261. justified by

  1262. faith apart

  1263. from works

  1264. of the

  1265. law.

  1266. We did

  1267. not accomplish

  1268. it.

  1269. We could

  1270. not accomplish

  1271. it.

  1272. We never

  1273. would have.

  1274. If Christ

  1275. wasn't holding

  1276. me fast

  1277. now, I

  1278. would certainly

  1279. leave.

  1280. I read

  1281. previously

  1282. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1283. chapter 2

  1284. and verse

  1285. 8, which

  1286. says,

  1287. for by grace

  1288. you have

  1289. been saved

  1290. through faith,

  1291. and this

  1292. is not

  1293. your own

  1294. doing, it

  1295. is the

  1296. gift of

  1297. God.

  1298. Paul goes

  1299. on in

  1300. verse 9

  1301. to say,

  1302. not a

  1303. result of

  1304. works, so

  1305. that no

  1306. one may

  1307. boast.

  1308. Our

  1309. salvation is

  1310. monergistic.

  1311. God does

  1312. it, and

  1313. he does it

  1314. because he

  1315. deserves all

  1316. the glory

  1317. for doing

  1318. it.

  1319. I don't

  1320. get a shred

  1321. of the glory.

  1322. God made

  1323. the way

  1324. possible, and

  1325. he did all

  1326. the things, and

  1327. then I got

  1328. on board.

  1329. I get none

  1330. of it.

  1331. God says in

  1332. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 48 chapter mention

  1333. 48, my

  1334. glory I will

  1335. not give

  1336. to another.

  1337. Paul says

  1338. in Galatians

    Galatians 6:14

  1339. 6 verse

  1340. 14, far

  1341. be it for

  1342. me to

  1343. boast, except

  1344. in the

  1345. cross of

  1346. our Lord

  1347. Jesus Christ.

  1348. There he

  1349. says, there's

  1350. a thing to

  1351. boast in, what

  1352. God has

  1353. done on

  1354. our behalf.

  1355. So we

  1356. ought to be

  1357. humble, and

  1358. I'm not saying

  1359. that we don't

  1360. stand for the

  1361. truth, but we

  1362. stand on it

  1363. because it is

  1364. God's truth, not

  1365. because it is

  1366. ours.

  1367. Secondly, the

  1368. righteousness of

  1369. God promotes

  1370. ethnic harmony

  1371. and missions to

  1372. the ends of

  1373. the earth.

  1374. I know some

  1375. of you would

  1376. like to be

  1377. way deep

  1378. into this

  1379. one today, and

  1380. I'm not

  1381. going to.

  1382. Here Paul

  1383. says, is

  1384. God the

  1385. God of

  1386. Jews only?

  1387. Is he

  1388. not the

  1389. God of

  1390. Gentiles

  1391. also?

  1392. Yes, of

  1393. Gentiles

  1394. also.

  1395. Categorically

  1396. dividing people

  1397. into two

  1398. ethnic groups,

  1399. Jews and

  1400. everyone else.

  1401. And he's

  1402. saying that

  1403. God doesn't

  1404. show favor

  1405. in granting

  1406. righteousness

  1407. just to one

  1408. ethnic group,

  1409. but to all

  1410. ethnic groups.

  1411. Because God

  1412. is one, verse

  1413. 30, and he

  1414. will justify

  1415. the circumcised

  1416. by faith and

  1417. the uncircumcised

  1418. through faith.

  1419. If you're to

  1420. come to God,

  1421. you will come

  1422. by faith.

  1423. There's one

  1424. way that it

  1425. will be

  1426. accomplished.

  1427. This is why

  1428. Christians

  1429. should be

  1430. eager to

  1431. share the

  1432. gospel with

  1433. all peoples

  1434. everywhere, that

  1435. we would not

  1436. shy away from

  1437. such a thing

  1438. because our

  1439. God is a

  1440. God who

  1441. saves.

  1442. Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:19

  1443. verse 19,

  1444. just says,

  1445. go therefore

  1446. and make

  1447. disciples of

  1448. all nations.

  1449. All ethnos,

  1450. and there's a

  1451. lot of

  1452. disagreement about

  1453. what that

  1454. means exactly,

  1455. but we know

  1456. it can mean

  1457. that we're

  1458. going to

  1459. share the

  1460. gospel with

  1461. people who

  1462. aren't just

  1463. like us.

  1464. We're going

  1465. to go,

  1466. and we're

  1467. going to

  1468. share.

  1469. This is a

  1470. beautiful vision

  1471. of heaven,

  1472. again from

  1473. John,

  1474. Revelation

    Revelation 7:9

  1475. chapter 7,

  1476. verse 9 and

  1477. 10, where

  1478. he says,

  1479. I looked

  1480. and behold

  1481. a great

  1482. multitude that

  1483. no one

  1484. could number

  1485. from every

  1486. nation,

  1487. from all

  1488. tribes and

  1489. peoples and

  1490. languages,

  1491. standing before

  1492. the throne

  1493. and before

  1494. the Lamb,

  1495. clothed in

  1496. white robes,

  1497. with palm

  1498. branches in

  1499. their hands,

  1500. and crying

  1501. out with a

  1502. loud voice,

  1503. salvation

  1504. belongs to

  1505. our God

  1506. who sits

  1507. on the

  1508. throne,

  1509. and to

  1510. the Lamb.

  1511. That'll be the

  1512. great desire of

  1513. every Christian,

  1514. that God

  1515. will be praised

  1516. amongst all

  1517. peoples everywhere.

  1518. This is why

  1519. Paul says,

  1520. right,

  1521. 1 and

  1522. verse 16,

  1523. I am not

  1524. ashamed of

  1525. the gospel.

  1526. I've been

  1527. saying to you

  1528. in the positive,

  1529. I am proud of

  1530. the gospel for

  1531. it is the power

  1532. of God for

  1533. salvation to

  1534. everyone who

  1535. believes,

  1536. to the Jew

  1537. first,

  1538. and also to

  1539. everyone else.

  1540. We, like

  1541. Paul, should be

  1542. proud of the

  1543. gospel because

  1544. it is the

  1545. power of God

  1546. for salvation.

  1547. And third

  1548. application,

  1549. the righteousness

  1550. of God

  1551. changes our

  1552. hearts.

  1553. So, to be

  1554. clear, we

  1555. are not

  1556. justified,

  1557. made righteous

  1558. by the law.

  1559. We cannot

  1560. be.

  1561. It is not

  1562. sufficient for

  1563. the task.

  1564. We need an

  1565. alien righteousness.

  1566. We need the

  1567. righteousness of

  1568. Christ granted

  1569. to us.

  1570. But if we

  1571. have it,

  1572. if we have

  1573. it, then our

  1574. hearts have

  1575. been changed.

  1576. And this is

  1577. going to work

  1578. itself out in

  1579. our lives.

  1580. Look at

  1581. verse 31.

  1582. Paul says,

  1583. do we then

  1584. overthrow the

  1585. law by this

  1586. faith?

  1587. He's saying,

  1588. do we disregard

  1589. it altogether?

  1590. The moral

  1591. commands of

  1592. God, do we

  1593. just toss

  1594. them aside?

  1595. And he

  1596. says, by

  1597. no means.

  1598. Me genoito.

  1599. It's very,

  1600. very strong.

  1601. It's an

  1602. expletive

  1603. Greek phrase.

  1604. It's a

  1605. strong phrase.

  1606. Absolutely

  1607. not.

  1608. On the

  1609. contrary,

  1610. we

  1611. uphold.

  1612. Have

  1613. been made

  1614. righteous in

  1615. Christ, we

  1616. uphold

  1617. the law.

  1618. In Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 11:19

  1619. chapter 11,

  1620. verse 19,

  1621. their God

  1622. says, I

  1623. will give

  1624. them one

  1625. heart and

  1626. a new

  1627. spirit I

  1628. will put

  1629. within them.

  1630. I

  1631. remove the

  1632. heart of

  1633. stone from

  1634. their flesh

  1635. and give

  1636. them a

  1637. heart of

  1638. flesh that

  1639. they may

  1640. walk in

  1641. my statutes

  1642. and keep

  1643. my rules

  1644. and obey

  1645. them.

  1646. And they

  1647. shall be

  1648. my people

  1649. and I

  1650. will be

  1651. their God.

  1652. And later

  1653. in Ezekiel

  1654. 36,

  1655. in verse

  1656. 27,

  1657. he says,

  1658. I will put

  1659. my spirit

  1660. within you

  1661. and cause

  1662. you to

  1663. walk in

  1664. my statutes

  1665. and be

  1666. careful to

  1667. obey my

  1668. rules.

  1669. God

  1670. rules over

  1671. us by

  1672. his word

  1673. and it's

  1674. a good

  1675. word.

  1676. These are

  1677. not burdensome

  1678. commandments,

  1679. they're good

  1680. commandments

  1681. that we

  1682. ought to

  1683. keep.

  1684. By faith

  1685. in his

  1686. son,

  1687. we're given

  1688. the spirit

  1689. that we

  1690. would both

  1691. know and

  1692. desire and

  1693. be empowered

  1694. to keep

  1695. his commands.

  1696. Jesus

  1697. says in

  1698. John 14

  1699. and verse

  1700. 15,

  1701. if you

  1702. love me,

  1703. if your

  1704. passion has

  1705. been turned

  1706. toward me

  1707. and away

  1708. from this

  1709. world,

  1710. you will

  1711. keep

  1712. my

  1713. commandments.

  1714. It becomes

  1715. the outflow

  1716. of grateful

  1717. hearts,

  1718. changed

  1719. lives.

  1720. we

  1721. were

  1722. oriented

  1723. in a

  1724. different

  1725. direction

  1726. that we

  1727. might be

  1728. a people

  1729. for the

  1730. praise

  1731. of our

  1732. God.

  1733. The

  1734. righteousness

  1735. of God

  1736. changes

  1737. our

  1738. hearts.

  1739. So may

  1740. we be a

  1741. people

  1742. who believe

  1743. the gospel

  1744. of Jesus

  1745. Christ

  1746. so that we

  1747. will possess

  1748. the righteousness

  1749. of God

  1750. and stand

  1751. in the

  1752. judgment

  1753. so that we

  1754. will be

  1755. humble

  1756. and boast

  1757. only in the

  1758. cross of

  1759. Christ.

  1760. So we

  1761. will be

  1762. a people

  1763. who are

  1764. not ashamed

  1765. of the

  1766. gospel

  1767. and carry

  1768. this good

  1769. news across

  1770. ethnic

  1771. boundaries

  1772. and oceans

  1773. and so that

  1774. we will be

  1775. a people

  1776. of changed

  1777. heart

  1778. who desire

  1779. to walk

  1780. in God's

  1781. good

  1782. commands.

  1783. Let's pray

  1784. together.

  1785. Thank you.
