  1. Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2. I'll just warn you on the front end, this is the longest word count I've ever had in writing a sermon.

  3. ! And when I tried to make cuts, I just realized I only say important things.

  4. So, we're going to have to move quickly, and bear with me.

  5. But today I have the privilege, the joy, and the challenge of preaching on the topic of stewarding your time.

  6. Everyone in our world is interested in this topic for varied reasons.

  7. You can imagine the businessman, he wants to manage time better, to be more profitable, to make more money, to have more product.

  8. You can imagine the family man, he wants to get out of work as soon as possible and spend time with his family.

  9. Everything is oriented clockwise towards being with the family.

  10. And for the business owner, in his eyes, his family eats up too much of his time.

  11. Whereas for the family man, in his eyes, his job eats up too much of his time.

  12. Well, what's the difference? These two men have a difference in priorities.

  13. You might assume that the businessman is in the wrong and the family man is in the right in the given hypothetical.

  14. But the reality is both men have the potential to be wrong.

  15. The businessman could potentially rightly value work and profit.

  16. After all, 1 Timothy 5.8 says,

  17. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household,

  18. he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

  19. Or perhaps the businessman is familiar with Proverbs 14.23.

  20. There is profit in hard work, but mere talk leads to poverty.

  21. So it's conceivable that the businessman may have started out with honorable motives that made him work really hard

  22. and have long hours at work.

  23. Not a 40-hour work week, but a 70-hour work week.

  24. In fact, he may be chiefly motivated to work for his family.

  25. And maybe he's wealthy and he wants to be a philanthropist for other families in need.

  26. And in that sense, he may be a truer family man, so to speak.

  27. But, as most of us have probably already thought,

  28. it is more likely that this individual is driven by a love of money,

  29. or a desire of security, or something wicked,

  30. because we just all instinctively know that this man is spending too much time at work.

  31. And by consequence, neglecting his family, his church, himself, and most importantly, God.

  32. Well, what about the family man who cannot wait to get home?

  33. He sounds like a good guy.

  34. But as I said, this man, he might sound better, but there's still the potential it's wrong.

  35. So let's just say he's hated by his co-workers.

  36. They say things like,

  37. he never stays to help during our busy seasons.

  38. Or he spends time at work FaceTiming his wife and kids all the time.

  39. When is he going to get anything done?

  40. Or perhaps they even say he's worthless and they hope he gets fired.

  41. So I think we all see the obvious problem with both of these men.

  42. They have an idol, one work, one family.

  43. The businessman turned God's good gift of work and provision into an object of worship for whatever reasons.

  44. Likewise, the family man turned God's good gift of the family into an object of worship for whatever reasons.

  45. So therefore, both are in sin and both consciously or unconsciously, intentionally or unintentionally,

  46. are poorly stewarding their time.

  47. So as I alluded, there are a number of issues with both of these men in the given hypothetical.

  48. But for our purposes today, I want you to notice the problem of time.

  49. If you were to counsel these two brothers, and I'm assuming they are Christians,

  50. and they came to you and they asked,

  51. how should I prioritize my time?

  52. What would you tell them?

  53. And frankly, I doubt you even need this hypothetical.

  54. If you look around the room, I guarantee every single one of us in every single season of our life

  55. has asked this question.

  56. How do I spend my time?

  57. How do I steward my time?

  58. And whenever we feel in life as though we've finally arrived,

  59. as though we finally have control over our time,

  60. as if we're stewarding it perfectly,

  61. something happens to disrupt that.

  62. A marriage, a new kid, a second kid,

  63. a new job, and so on and so forth.

  64. And like me, you feel like life just keeps getting faster and faster,

  65. and that you are losing more and more time.

  66. And so we ask,

  67. how should I spend my time?

  68. How do I find balance in life?

  69. That's a word we love in this discussion.

  70. How do I know I'm not neglecting the responsibilities God has given me at work,

  71. at home,

  72. and at church,

  73. and anywhere else He has placed me?

  74. So, of course, today I cannot tell you in specific detail

  75. how to manage your personal life with all its varied variables.

  76. But in principle, I can tell you what it should look like for every Christian.

  77. But in practice, no, it can look very different, and that's okay.

  78. So the goal today is simple.

  79. I want to show you from Scripture

  80. what should occupy our thoughts

  81. and determine our actions

  82. so as to better steward our time

  83. for the glory of God.

  84. So with that, we'll look at our text,

  85. Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  86. starting in verse 15.

  87. We'll be looking at verses 15 through 21.

  88. The Apostle Paul writes,

  89. Therefore, look critically how you are to walk,

  90. not as unwise, but as wise,

  91. redeeming the time,

  92. for the days are evil.

  93. For this reason, do not become fools,

  94. but discern what the will of the Lord is.

  95. And do not get drunk with wine,

  96. in this is debauchery,

  97. but be filled by the Spirit,

  98. speaking to one another in psalms,

  99. in hymns,

  100. in spiritual songs,

  101. singing and making melody to the Lord from the heart,

  102. giving thanks always for all things

  103. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  104. to God the Father,

  105. submitting to one another in fear of Christ.

  106. So in this text today,

  107. there are five commandments,

  108. some do's and some don'ts,

  109. and these do's and don'ts serve as contrasts.

  110. But we're going to divide the text in three parts

  111. based on the contrasts.

  112. So our outline for today,

  113. number one,

  114. be critical in your walk.

  115. And number two,

  116. understand the will of the Lord.

  117. And number three,

  118. be filled in the Spirit.

  119. And I'll repeat these as we go along.

  120. So our first section today,

  121. number one,

  122. be critical in your walk.

  123. Looking at verses 15 through 16.

  124. Specifically,

  125. let's start with the first half of verse 15.

  126. Paul says,

  127. look critically at how you are to walk.

  128. So that's the first of our five commandments,

  129. the word look.

  130. In Greek,

  131. it is the imperative blepete,

  132. which literally means look,

  133. or some translate it as consider,

  134. but it has the idea of looking with your eyes.

  135. And Paul modifies this commandment verb

  136. with the adverb critically,

  137. or some translations say carefully.

  138. But I prefer critically,

  139. because the way Paul is using this word

  140. is not in the sense that we should be cautious

  141. or timid in our walk,

  142. as the word carefully may imply.

  143. Rather,

  144. Paul uses this word in a way to convey

  145. that we are to be tedious,

  146. that we are to really examine

  147. every weight and grain of our walk.

  148. There's a high level of scrutiny

  149. in looking at our walk in this way.

  150. And our walk is simply Paul's way

  151. of describing our life with Christ

  152. and the progression of our sanctification over time.

  153. So regarding this walk,

  154. we are to weigh it or to judge it

  155. by looking at it constantly.

  156. Now, for those of us worried about time

  157. and wanting to accomplish more each day,

  158. this is a challenging command.

  159. It is challenging because Paul, I think,

  160. is essentially saying

  161. we should make time to think

  162. and to think specifically about our walk.

  163. And I also assume in this,

  164. just knowing a little bit about Paul

  165. and other things he's written about,

  166. that he has praying in mind,

  167. that we should pray that God

  168. would enlighten us,

  169. that he would give us wisdom

  170. to discern our walk rightly,

  171. to know the true state of our stance before him.

  172. And we don't like hearing that

  173. because we want to get something done

  174. that's tangible.

  175. We would never admit this,

  176. but functionally, sometimes,

  177. often, for some of us maybe,

  178. we treat prayer and quiet time

  179. as a waste of time.

  180. And nonetheless,

  181. this is what the word of the Lord says.

  182. Paul, by implication, says,

  183. make time to think,

  184. to look,

  185. and to pray.

  186. Discern your walk.

  187. So as you've lived this week

  188. and in the upcoming weeks,

  189. are you walking rightly with God?

  190. Are you examining yourself

  191. before God in prayer

  192. and in his word?

  193. Are you practicing repentance

  194. when necessary?

  195. Are you practicing obedience

  196. and growing in your faith?

  197. In the second half of verse 15,

  198. Paul describes how we are to walk.

  199. He says,

  200. not as unwise,

  201. but as wise,

  202. redeeming the time

  203. for the days are evil.

  204. Now, the very imagery of walking

  205. is a moment-to-moment progression.

  206. This world is full of sin and wickedness.

  207. Paul wrote in the beginning

  208. of his letter to the Ephesians,

    Ephesians 2:1–3

  209. chapter 2, verses 1 through 3,

  210. all about mankind

  211. apart from Christ.

  212. And this includes you and I

  213. before Christ.

  214. He said of mankind

  215. that we are dead,

  216. that we are sinful,

  217. that we are following

  218. the way of the world,

  219. following Satan,

  220. controlled by the passions

  221. of our flesh.

  222. And Paul says all of that,

  223. and he says that we walked

  224. in that way.

  225. So he's building a contrast

  226. throughout his letters.

  227. Two paths,

  228. two ways of walking,

  229. two directions.

  230. So in chapter 2,

  231. verses 1 through 3,

  232. we see what walking unwisely

  233. looks like.

  234. But now,

  235. Paul tells us

  236. we ought to walk wisely.

  237. Well, what does that actually mean?

  238. So in the ancient world,

  239. wisdom was not merely

  240. something you possessed

  241. intellectually or in your mind.

  242. rather,

  243. wisdom was knowing

  244. the way things truly are

  245. in the universe

  246. and then living in accord

  247. with that truth.

  248. So you think about

  249. Stoicism,

  250. the ancient Stoics,

  251. this meant for them

  252. understanding the true nature

  253. of the universe

  254. through physics

  255. and math and literature

  256. and so on.

  257. And out of these things,

  258. they would create

  259. a philosophy,

  260. in their case,

  261. Stoicism,

  262. and then they would live

  263. in accord with that philosophy.

  264. To live outside of accord

  265. with that philosophy

  266. was to be unwise.

  267. So there was this

  268. obedience idea

  269. wrapped up in wisdom,

  270. not just knowledge.

  271. And this was true

  272. for the Christians too,

  273. except we are aligning

  274. ourselves with the truth

  275. of God,

  276. the creator of the universe,

  277. and learning to live

  278. in light of that truth

  279. so as to change

  280. our thinking,

  281. our acts,

  282. and our living.

  283. So walking in wisdom

  284. for Paul

  285. is walking in accord

  286. with the nature

  287. and the will

  288. of God.

  289. So we are to look

  290. critically at our walk

  291. to evaluate

  292. if we are walking

  293. in accord

  294. with the nature

  295. and will of God.

  296. And this commandment

  297. comes with a good

  298. and necessary

  299. consequence.

  300. So looking at

  301. verse 16,

  302. walking in wisdom

  303. leads to,

  304. quote,

  305. redeeming the time

  306. for the days

  307. are evil.

  308. So for those of us

  309. tempted to think

  310. that stopping,

  311. quietly considering

  312. our walk,

  313. praying,

  314. evaluating ourselves

  315. before God,

  316. those of us

  317. who are tempted

  318. to think that

  319. that is a waste

  320. of time,

  321. Paul says just

  322. the opposite.

  323. Paul says that

  324. by critically

  325. considering our walk

  326. so as to ensure

  327. that we walk

  328. in wisdom

  329. actually redeems

  330. the time.

  331. And what is it

  332. redeemed from?

  333. The evil

  334. we would have

  335. committed

  336. had we not

  337. taken the time

  338. to critically

  339. examine ourselves

  340. in our walk.

  341. Paul says

  342. for the days

  343. are evil.

  344. So we must be

  345. so careful

  346. in this world

  347. and through wisdom

  348. we not only

  349. avoid evil

  350. but we produce

  351. acts

  352. of righteousness

  353. when we live

  354. in accord

  355. with the truth

  356. of God

  357. and his word.

  358. So it is worth

  359. the time

  360. to stop

  361. and look

  362. at our walk

  363. with God.

  364. In this

  365. we actually

  366. make good use

  367. of our time

  368. and not only

  369. the time

  370. that we sit

  371. quietly

  372. but the rest

  373. of the time

  374. as we prepare

  375. our hearts

  376. and our minds

  377. for the day

  378. because we have

  379. prepared ourselves

  380. in thought

  381. and prayer.

  382. But there is

  383. more to walking

  384. in wisdom

  385. more that will

  386. help us

  387. use our time

  388. better

  389. and so Paul

  390. goes on

  391. in verse 17

  392. and this leads

  393. us to the second

  394. part of our

  395. outline.

  396. Part number two

  397. do not become

  398. fools

  399. but understand

  400. the will

  401. of the Lord.

  402. Part number two

  403. do not become

  404. fools

  405. but understand

  406. the will

  407. of the Lord.

  408. Paul writes

  409. in the first

  410. half of verse 17

  411. for this reason

  412. do not become

  413. fools.

  414. So this is our

  415. second commandment

  416. of five

  417. in this text.

  418. Do not become

  419. as the commandment.

  420. Do not become

  421. what?

  422. Don't become

  423. fools.

  424. For the sake

  425. of not wasting

  426. our time

  427. not wasting

  428. away our

  429. very lives

  430. Paul gives

  431. us the second

  432. commandment

  433. in this passage.

  434. We ought not

  435. become fools.

  436. Well who is

  437. the fool?

  438. Proverbs 18

  439. 2 says

  440. a fool does

  441. not delight

  442. in understanding

  443. but only

  444. in revealing

  445. his own

  446. mind.

  447. He's a boaster

  448. a talker.

  449. Proverbs 29

  450. 11 says

  451. a fool

  452. always loses

  453. his temper

  454. but a wise

  455. man holds

  456. it back.

  457. And we could

  458. go on and

  459. on but

  460. ultimately

  461. we know

  462. the fool

  463. is the one

  464. who rejects

  465. Christ as

  466. the cornerstone.

  467. Christ made

  468. this clear

  469. at the end

  470. of the Sermon

  471. on the Mount

  472. when he described

  473. the one who

  474. builds his

  475. house on the

  476. rock versus

  477. the fool

  478. who builds

  479. his house

  480. on the

  481. sand.

  482. So to be

  483. a fool

  484. is to be

  485. unwise.

  486. To be a fool

  487. is to not

  488. consider your

  489. walk with God

  490. and to be a

  491. fool is to

  492. waste away

  493. the time

  494. God has

  495. given you.

  496. Allowing your

  497. days to be

  498. in service

  499. to evil.

  500. So Paul says

  501. not to be

  502. foolish and he

  503. goes on second

  504. half of verse

  505. 17 but discern

  506. what the will

  507. of the Lord

  508. is.

  509. That's

  510. commandment

  511. number three.

  512. Discern what

  513. the will of

  514. the Lord

  515. is.

  516. Well what is

  517. the will

  518. of the Lord?

  519. And Paul

  520. here is not

  521. speaking about

  522. what college

  523. you should go

  524. to, who

  525. you should

  526. marry, how

  527. many kids

  528. you should

  529. have, or

  530. any of those

  531. kind of life

  532. decisions though

  533. those are

  534. important.

  535. Paul is

  536. actually talking

  537. about the

  538. ultimate will

  539. of God for

  540. mankind and

  541. creation, the

  542. big plan.

  543. What is this

  544. plan?

  545. Well again, if

  546. you read all

  547. of Ephesians

  548. you would know

  549. Ephesians chapter

  550. one verse

  551. four, Paul

  552. writes of

  553. God's will

  554. and he

  555. says, even

  556. as God

  557. chose us,

  558. referring to

  559. the church,

  560. so even

  561. as God

  562. chose the

  563. church in

  564. Christ before

  565. the foundation

  566. of the world,

  567. so there it

  568. is, he's

  569. planned this,

  570. that we

  571. should be

  572. holy and

  573. blameless

  574. before him.

  575. Paul

  576. continues,

  577. in love he

  578. predestined

  579. us for

  580. adoption to

  581. himself as

  582. sons through

  583. Jesus Christ

  584. according to

  585. the purpose

  586. of his

  587. will.

  588. And Paul

  589. goes on

  590. after describing

  591. this plan of

  592. salvation, it

  593. says in

  594. Ephesians chapter

  595. one verses

  596. nine through

  597. ten, that

  598. God has

  599. made known

  600. to us,

  601. these are

  602. Paul's words,

  603. known to

  604. us the

  605. mystery of

  606. his will

  607. according to

  608. his purpose,

  609. which he set

  610. forth in

  611. Christ as a

  612. plan for the

  613. fullness of

  614. time to

  615. unite all

  616. things in

  617. Christ, things

  618. in heaven and

  619. things on

  620. earth.

  621. So, through

  622. Christ's

  623. death, sacrifice,

  624. resurrection,

  625. ascension, not

  626. only are we

  627. saved, but God

  628. is uniting all

  629. things, heaven

  630. and earth, creation,

  631. man, in

  632. Christ for his

  633. good plan to

  634. worship him and

  635. glorify him for

  636. eternity.

  637. So, clearly, when

  638. Paul refers to the

  639. will of the Lord in

  640. our text in

  641. chapter five,

  642. verse 17, he is

  643. building on the

  644. will of the Lord

  645. that he opened his

  646. letter explaining.

  647. So, in sum, the

  648. will of the Lord is

  649. to save his people

  650. by placing them in

  651. Christ and uniting

  652. all things in

  653. Christ for his

  654. glories.

  655. This is what we

  656. call the gospel.

  657. And so, you may

  658. wonder then, well,

  659. isn't Paul writing

  660. to the church in

  661. Ephesus?

  662. In other words,

  663. believers, wouldn't

  664. they already know

  665. the gospel?

  666. Why would he

  667. command them to

  668. discern the will

  669. of the Lord if

  670. they already know

  671. it, if they

  672. already know the

  673. gospel?

  674. And again, Paul

  675. is discussing this

  676. discernment in

  677. light of the

  678. walking that we

  679. as believers are

  680. called to or

  681. commanded to

  682. examine.

  683. In other words,

  684. Paul is saying

  685. we ought to

  686. consider and

  687. know the will

  688. of the Lord so

  689. well that we

  690. instinctively apply

  691. it to our everyday

  692. walk with him.

  693. Whatever situation,

  694. whatever encounter,

  695. whatever the day

  696. brings, we are

  697. training ourselves

  698. consciously,

  699. intentionally,

  700. intentionally and

  701. daily to have

  702. gospel criteria

  703. informing our

  704. every desire,

  705. action, and

  706. decision.

  707. And we don't

  708. have time to

  709. examine all of

  710. Ephesians, but

  711. go read it for

  712. yourself this

  713. afternoon.

  714. It's short.

  715. And it will be

  716. clear that Paul

  717. has these things

  718. chiefly in mind

  719. concerning the

  720. will of the

  721. Lord and the

  722. life of the

  723. believer.

  724. Three things in

  725. my mind.

  726. Number one,

  727. submission to

  728. Christ in all

  729. things.

  730. Number two,

  731. loving and

  732. living in

  733. harmony with

  734. the church.

  735. And number

  736. three, doing

  737. everything to

  738. the glory of

  739. God.

  740. And of course,

  741. under this,

  742. you'll see

  743. things about

  744. relationships

  745. between wife,

  746. husband,

  747. slave,

  748. masters,

  749. children,

  750. parents,

  751. and so

  752. forth.

  753. But in

  754. summation,

  755. these are the

  756. three big

  757. areas, the

  758. ideas.

  759. And finally,

  760. we have our

  761. last section

  762. where we will

  763. spend most of

  764. our time.

  765. Section three,

  766. do not get

  767. drunk, but be

  768. filled in the

  769. spirit.

  770. Verses 18

  771. through 21.

  772. Do not get

  773. drunk, but be

  774. filled in the

  775. spirit.

  776. So the first

  777. half of verse

  778. 18, Paul says,

  779. do not get

  780. drunk with

  781. wine, in

  782. this is

  783. debauchery.

  784. And so we

  785. have commandment

  786. number four.

  787. He says, do

  788. not get

  789. drunk.

  790. Now this

  791. commandment, it

  792. may seem

  793. random or

  794. unrelated to

  795. Paul's flow of

  796. thought, but

  797. rest assured, it

  798. flows very well

  799. with his line of

  800. thought, and we

  801. will examine that

  802. in just a

  803. moment.

  804. But I

  805. briefly wanted to

  806. comment on

  807. this, just

  808. because I

  809. know throughout

  810. our lives,

  811. maybe not

  812. necessarily in

  813. this church,

  814. but various

  815. relatives or

  816. friends or

  817. whoever,

  818. different

  819. traditions,

  820. this is kind

  821. of a

  822. controversy,

  823. should

  824. Christians

  825. drink or

  826. not.

  827. And of

  828. course, I'm

  829. not going to

  830. dissect all

  831. of that or

  832. don't really

  833. want to spend

  834. a lot of

  835. time on

  836. that at

  837. all.

  838. I just

  839. want to

  840. note that

  841. Paul's

  842. commandment

  843. here is

  844. against

  845. drunkenness,

  846. not drinking.

  847. There are

  848. some Christian

  849. brothers who

  850. refuse to

  851. drink and

  852. they claim

  853. it is a

  854. matter of

  855. wisdom,

  856. and I

  857. respect that

  858. view a

  859. lot.

  860. I grew

  861. up in a

  862. dry family

  863. for which

  864. I'm so

  865. thankful

  866. personally.

  867. In fact,

  868. I've never

  869. had a

  870. drink,

  871. I'm 26

  872. years old,

  873. but even

  874. I will tell

  875. you that

  876. for Paul,

  877. he does

  878. not pit

  879. living wisely

  880. against merely

  881. the act of

  882. drinking

  883. responsibly.

  884. drunkenness.

  885. In his flow

  886. of thought

  887. and discussing

  888. wise walking,

  889. he never

  890. condemns

  891. drinking

  892. responsibly,

  893. he condemns

  894. drunkenness.

  895. And we

  896. see the

  897. same idea

  898. pop up in

  899. 1 Corinthians

  900. 6,

  901. 12.

  902. Paul writes,

  903. all things

  904. are lawful

  905. for me,

  906. but not

  907. all things

  908. are helpful.

  909. All things

  910. are lawful

  911. for me,

  912. but I

  913. will not

  914. be dominated

  915. by anything.

  916. So as

  917. believers,

  918. we have the

  919. freedom to

  920. drink responsibly,

  921. or we have

  922. the freedom

  923. to not

  924. drink at

  925. all,

  926. and neither

  927. brother is

  928. the weaker

  929. brother.

  930. I cannot

  931. tell you how

  932. many times

  933. in college

  934. I had some

  935. cage stage

  936. bro come

  937. up to me

  938. and tell me

  939. I was not

  940. living in

  941. freedom because

  942. I didn't

  943. drink,

  944. that I was

  945. being legalistic

  946. even though I

  947. held that

  948. conviction

  949. privately.

  950. And I just

  951. want to tell

  952. you I think

  953. that mindset

  954. of trying

  955. to convert

  956. people to

  957. drink or

  958. not to

  959. drink is

  960. ungodly.

  961. If you

  962. want to

  963. and they

  964. want to,

  965. that's totally

  966. fine and do

  967. it to the

  968. glory of

  969. God.

  970. But don't

  971. ram a drink

  972. down someone's

  973. throat.

  974. And frankly,

  975. the truly

  976. weaker brother

  977. in this whole

  978. conversation is

  979. the one who

  980. feels the need

  981. to tell others

  982. what to do,

  983. whether to

  984. drink or

  985. not to

  986. drink.

  987. We have

  988. freedom to

  989. enjoy or

  990. not,

  991. and that's

  992. that.

  993. So there

  994. are just so

  995. many other

  996. more important

  997. things to

  998. discuss and

  999. have unity

  1000. on,

  1001. and this

  1002. is just

  1003. not one

  1004. of them.

  1005. So with

  1006. that aside,

  1007. we can

  1008. return to

  1009. Paul's

  1010. flow of

  1011. thoughts.

  1012. I think

  1013. Paul picked

  1014. on drunkenness

  1015. in particular

  1016. in this

  1017. passage

  1018. because it

  1019. contrasts so

  1020. well with

  1021. the idea

  1022. of critically

  1023. considering our

  1024. walk,

  1025. walking wisely

  1026. and as we'll

  1027. see in a

  1028. moment being

  1029. filled by

  1030. the spirit.

  1031. it.

  1032. So the

  1033. contrast is

  1034. twofold in

  1035. my mind.

  1036. One,

  1037. drunkenness

  1038. represents the

  1039. opposite of

  1040. redeeming the

  1041. time.

  1042. Of course,

  1043. all sin is

  1044. sin,

  1045. but there's

  1046. something unique

  1047. about drunkenness

1048. in that it is a

  1049. complete and

  1050. total waste

  1051. of time.

  1052. Drunkenness

  1053. does not do

  1054. anything or

  1055. accomplish anything

  1056. except lead the

  1057. drunk to ruin

  1058. apart from

  1059. Christ and

  1060. faith in

  1061. Christ.

  1062. Number two,

  1063. drunkenness is

  1064. the complete

  1065. opposite picture

  1066. of the man who

  1067. considers his

  1068. walk and is

  1069. thoughtful in

  1070. how he plans

  1071. to live so

  1072. as to pursue

  1073. life with

  1074. God.

  1075. But the

  1076. drunkard has

  1077. no aim in

  1078. life and gives

  1079. no thought to

  1080. tomorrow,

  1081. just the next

  1082. drink.

  1083. In fact,

  1084. Paul is

  1085. probably quoting

  1086. Proverbs 23

  1087. when he warns

  1088. of drunkenness.

  1089. So let me read

  1090. just a portion

  1091. of that to

  1092. give you an

  1093. idea of the

  1094. thought world

  1095. that he and

  1096. his readers

  1097. were in as

  1098. they considered

  1099. this.

  1100. Solomon writes

  1101. in Proverbs

    Proverbs 23:19–21

  1102. 23 verses

  1103. 19 through

  1104. 21, he

  1105. says,

  1106. Hear,

  1107. my son,

  1108. and be

  1109. wise,

  1110. and direct

  1111. your heart

  1112. in the way.

  1113. Be not

  1114. among drunkards

  1115. or among

  1116. gluttonous

  1117. eaters of

  1118. meat,

  1119. for the

  1120. drunkard and

  1121. the glutton

  1122. will come

  1123. to poverty

  1124. and slumber

  1125. will clothe

  1126. them with

  1127. rags.

  1128. And Solomon

  1129. goes on in

  1130. that very same

  1131. chapter in

  1132. verses 29

  1133. through 35,

  1134. which says

  1135. this,

  1136. Solomon asked,

  1137. Who has

  1138. woe?

  1139. Who has

  1140. sorrow?

  1141. Who has

  1142. strife?

  1143. Who has

  1144. complained?

  1145. Who has

  1146. wounds without

  1147. cause?

  1148. Who has

  1149. redness of

  1150. eyes?

  1151. And he

  1152. answers,

  1153. Those who

  1154. tarry long

  1155. over wine.

  1156. Do not look

  1157. at wine when

  1158. it is red or

  1159. sparkles in the

  1160. cup and goes

  1161. down smoothly.

  1162. In the end

  1163. it bites like

  1164. a serpent and

  1165. stings like

  1166. an adder.

  1167. Your eyes

  1168. will see

  1169. strange things

  1170. and your

  1171. heart utter

  1172. perverse

  1173. things.

  1174. You will

  1175. be like one

  1176. who lies

  1177. down in

  1178. the midst

  1179. of the

  1180. sea,

  1181. like one

  1182. who lies

  1183. on the

  1184. top of

  1185. a mast.

  1186. They

  1187. struck me,

  1188. you will

  1189. say,

  1190. but I was

  1191. not hurt.

  1192. They beat

  1193. me,

  1194. but I did

  1195. not feel

  1196. it.

  1197. When

  1198. shall I

  1199. awake?

  1200. I must

  1201. have

  1202. another

  1203. drink.

  1204. So clearly

  1205. the drunkard

  1206. described in

  1207. Proverbs 23

  1208. is enslaved

  1209. to the

  1210. bottle and

  1211. as a result

  1212. his life

  1213. amounts only

  1214. to what the

  1215. bottle allows

  1216. as his

  1217. master.

  1218. And

  1219. drunkenness

  1220. is a

  1221. cruel

  1222. master.

  1223. But for

  1224. those of us

  1225. in Christ,

  1226. regardless of

  1227. what prior

  1228. sins we

  1229. were enslaved

  1230. to,

  1231. we have

  1232. freedom in

  1233. Christ.

  1234. In

  1235. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:13

  1236. chapter 1

  1237. verse 13,

  1238. Paul says

  1239. upon believing

  1240. in Christ

  1241. in response

  1242. to the

  1243. gospel,

  1244. we were

  1245. sealed with

  1246. the promised

  1247. Holy Spirit

  1248. who is the

  1249. guarantee of

  1250. our inheritance

  1251. until we

  1252. acquire

  1253. possession of

  1254. it to the

  1255. praise of

  1256. his glory.

  1257. So Paul's

  1258. flow of

  1259. thought in

  1260. our text,

  1261. chapter 5

  1262. verses 15

  1263. through 21

  1264. continues then

  1265. and he's

  1266. saying no

  1267. longer shall

  1268. you be

  1269. filled with

  1270. wine or

  1271. in other

  1272. words,

  1273. do not get

  1274. drunk with

  1275. wine,

  1276. but he goes

  1277. on in the

  1278. second half

  1279. of verse

  1280. 18,

  1281. but be

  1282. filled by

  1283. the Spirit.

  1284. And this

  1285. is the

  1286. fifth and

  1287. final commandment

  1288. in our

  1289. text,

  1290. be filled

  1291. by the

  1292. Spirit.

  1293. So for

  1294. us to

  1295. understand

  1296. what Paul

  1297. means by

  1298. this,

  1299. this phrase

  1300. be filled

  1301. by the

  1302. Spirit,

  1303. we have

  1304. to look at

  1305. the Greek

  1306. and the

  1307. Greek verb

  1308. here is

  1309. pleluste.

  1310. Now,

  1311. this verb

  1312. is a

  1313. present

  1314. passive

  1315. imperative

  1316. verb.

  1317. There's

  1318. your geeky

  1319. grammar for

  1320. the day.

  1321. And this

  1322. tells us

  1323. a few

  1324. things.

  1325. The

  1326. present

  1327. tense

  1328. means this

  1329. is an

  1330. ongoing

  1331. action that

  1332. we,

  1333. as believers,

  1334. are commanded

  1335. to practice

  1336. and obey

  1337. day to

  1338. day,

  1339. moment to

  1340. moment.

  1341. It's to

  1342. characterize

  1343. us being

  1344. filled by

  1345. the Spirit.

  1346. But Paul

  1347. is not

  1348. saying that

  1349. we gain

  1350. and lose

  1351. the Spirit

  1352. throughout

  1353. our lives.

  1354. We just

  1355. saw that

  1356. we are

  1357. sealed with

  1358. the Spirit

  1359. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1360. chapter 1.

  1361. So clearly

  1362. that's not

  1363. what Paul

  1364. means.

  1365. No,

  1366. what he

  1367. means is

  1368. that we

  1369. are to

  1370. practice

  1371. obeying

  1372. the Spirit

  1373. as he

  1374. directs

  1375. us.

  1376. Not

  1377. obeying

  1378. the

  1379. drunkenness

  1380. of wine,

  1381. but obeying

  1382. the sobering

  1383. joy and

  1384. wisdom

  1385. of the

  1386. Spirit.

  1387. And the

  1388. passive voice

  1389. of the

  1390. Greek verb

  1391. tells us

  1392. that we

  1393. are being

  1394. filled

  1395. by the

  1396. Spirit.

  1397. In

  1398. other words,

  1399. we are

  1400. not being

  1401. more filled

  1402. with the

  1403. Spirit.

  1404. We fully

  1405. possess the

  1406. Spirit by

  1407. God's

  1408. grace because

  1409. of the

  1410. work of

  1411. Christ.

  1412. What Paul

  1413. is saying

  1414. here,

  1415. rather,

  1416. is that the

  1417. Spirit is

  1418. filling us

  1419. with something.

  1420. And I

  1421. believe Paul

  1422. is referring

  1423. to the

  1424. fullness

  1425. of God.

  1426. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:19

  1427. chapter 3,

  1428. verse 19,

  1429. Paul was

  1430. praying for

  1431. the church,

  1432. and he

  1433. prays that

  1434. the church

  1435. would know

  1436. the love

  1437. of Christ

  1438. that surpasses

  1439. knowledge,

  1440. that we

  1441. may be

  1442. filled with

  1443. all the

  1444. fullness

  1445. of God.

  1446. And Paul

  1447. prays this

  1448. because this

  1449. is not

  1450. something you

  1451. and I

  1452. can do,

  1453. only something

  1454. God in

  1455. his grace

  1456. toward us

  1457. in Christ

  1458. can do.

  1459. Daniel

  1460. Wallace,

  1461. an evangelical

  1462. Greek

  1463. professor,

  1464. tracing the

  1465. language of

  1466. fill or

  1467. filling in

  1468. Ephesians,

  1469. summarizes the

  1470. idea best when

  1471. he says,

  1472. quote,

  1473. believers are

  1474. to be filled

  1475. by Christ,

  1476. by means

  1477. of the

  1478. Spirit,

  1479. with the

  1480. content

  1481. of the

  1482. fullness

  1483. of God.

  1484. I love

  1485. that

  1486. Trinitarian

  1487. imagery

  1488. of God

  1489. working on

  1490. our behalf.

  1491. So Paul

  1492. is not

  1493. talking about

  1494. the indwelling

  1495. of the

  1496. Spirit.

  1497. That work

  1498. is done

  1499. and sealed

  1500. for us

  1501. who are

  1502. in Christ.

  1503. Now he

  1504. is saying

  1505. we are to

  1506. be sanctified

  1507. by means

  1508. of the

  1509. Spirit,

  1510. filling us

  1511. with the

  1512. fullness

  1513. of God.

  1514. And finally,

  1515. the verb

  1516. is in the

  1517. imperative,

  1518. which means

  1519. it is a

  1520. command for

  1521. us to

  1522. obey.

  1523. So you

  1524. might wonder,

  1525. how can

  1526. this verb

  1527. be a

  1528. command for

  1529. us to

  1530. obey,

  1531. and at

  1532. the same

  1533. time imply

  1534. that it

  1535. is the

  1536. Spirit who

  1537. is carrying

  1538. out the

  1539. action?

  1540. Well,

  1541. stick around

  1542. for our

  1543. series in

  1544. Romans.

  1545. But in

  1546. short,

  1547. it is

  1548. clear.

  1549. The Spirit

  1550. is filling

  1551. us with

  1552. the fullness

  1553. of God

  1554. and we

  1555. must be

  1556. willing and

  1557. obedient

  1558. participants

  1559. in that

  1560. work.

  1561. Not the

  1562. work of

  1563. salvation,

  1564. which is

  1565. entirely a

  1566. work of

  1567. God,

  1568. but a

  1569. work of

  1570. obedience,

  1571. a work of

  1572. sanctification,

  1573. in which we

  1574. cooperate by

  1575. grace.

  1576. So kill

  1577. off your

  1578. selfish desires,

  1579. your idols,

  1580. your values,

  1581. and your

  1582. thoughts.

  1583. Die to

  1584. self and

  1585. give of

  1586. yourself

  1587. fully to

  1588. God by

  1589. cooperating with

  1590. the leading

  1591. of the

  1592. Spirit,

  1593. as He

  1594. continually

  1595. fills you

  1596. with the

  1597. fullness of

  1598. God.

  1599. A simplification

  1600. of this idea

  1601. is found in

  1602. John 3.30.

  1603. Quote,

  1604. He must

  1605. increase,

  1606. but I

  1607. must

  1608. decrease.

  1609. Now,

  1610. here we are

  1611. and we

  1612. still have

  1613. three verses

  1614. to go,

  1615. but all of

  1616. Paul's

  1617. commandments

  1618. in this

  1619. section end

  1620. here in

  1621. verse 18.

  1622. Verses 19

  1623. through 21,

  1624. which we are

  1625. about to look

  1626. at,

  1627. describe the

  1628. results or

  1629. the activity

  1630. of the

  1631. one who

  1632. is being

  1633. filled by

  1634. the Holy

  1635. Spirit,

  1636. the one

  1637. looking

  1638. critically.

  1639. So we're

  1640. about to

  1641. see what

  1642. life looks

  1643. like for

  1644. those of

  1645. us who

  1646. obey and

  1647. keep these

  1648. five

  1649. commandments.

  1650. So verse

  1651. 19,

  1652. speaking to

  1653. one another

  1654. in psalms

  1655. and hymns

  1656. and spiritual

  1657. songs,

  1658. singing and

  1659. making melody

  1660. to the Lord

  1661. from the

  1662. heart.

  1663. So as I

  1664. said,

  1665. we participate

  1666. in true

  1667. worship from

  1668. the heart

  1669. only when

  1670. we keep

  1671. these five

  1672. commandments

  1673. we've just

  1674. considered.

  1675. And note

  1676. that when

  1677. Paul says

  1678. one another,

  1679. he's not

  1680. talking about

  1681. you and

  1682. your friends

  1683. or you and

  1684. your family

  1685. primarily,

  1686. though those

  1687. would certainly

  1688. be good

  1689. relationships to

  1690. worship God

  1691. with.

  1692. But Paul

  1693. primarily has

  1694. the church

  1695. body in

  1696. mind.

  1697. He's writing

  1698. to the

  1699. church of

  1700. Ephesus

  1701. after all.

  1702. And Paul

  1703. goes on to

  1704. describe the

  1705. wise walker,

  1706. the one being

  1707. filled by the

  1708. spirit and

  1709. says in

  1710. verse 20,

  1711. giving thanks

  1712. always and

  1713. for all

  1714. things in

  1715. the name of

  1716. our Lord

  1717. Jesus Christ

  1718. to God

  1719. the Father.

  1720. Again,

  1721. notice that

  1722. communal

  1723. language.

  1724. Paul says

  1725. our Lord

  1726. Jesus

  1727. Christ.

  1728. The one

  1729. who critically

  1730. considers his

  1731. walk and

  1732. is not

  1733. drunk with

  1734. wine but

  1735. filled by

  1736. the spirit

  1737. with the

  1738. fullness of

  1739. God is

  1740. one who

  1741. gives thanks

  1742. always and

  1743. for all

  1744. things.

  1745. So again,

  1746. I ask,

  1747. is your

  1748. life marked

  1749. by a

  1750. practice of

  1751. thanksgiving?

  1752. Are you

  1753. generally

  1754. thankful for

  1755. everything at

  1756. all times in

  1757. your life,

  1758. the good and

  1759. the bad?

  1760. Now is an

  1761. opportunity to

  1762. critically examine

  1763. your walk.

  1764. And finally,

  1765. verse 21,

  1766. the last

  1767. description for

  1768. those of us

  1769. who keep

  1770. these five

  1771. commandments.

  1772. Paul writes,

  1773. submitting to

  1774. one another

  1775. in fear of

  1776. Christ.

  1777. I say yet

  1778. again,

  1779. Paul is

  1780. talking about

  1781. the church

  1782. primarily at

  1783. this point.

  1784. The church

  1785. ought to

  1786. submit to

  1787. one another,

  1788. and this

  1789. may sound

  1790. like a

  1791. commandment

  1792. in English,

  1793. and it

  1794. certainly is

  1795. a commandment

  1796. elsewhere in

  1797. scripture,

  1798. but in our

  1799. text,

  1800. in Greek,

  1801. it is

  1802. clearly not

  1803. a commandment,

  1804. but describing

  1805. the result

  1806. of keeping

  1807. the actual

  1808. commandments

  1809. in this

  1810. passage.

  1811. This

  1812. submission is

  1813. to be done

  1814. in fear

  1815. of Christ.

  1816. The idea

  1817. here certainly

  1818. is reverence

  1819. for Christ,

  1820. but it is

  1821. certainly also

  1822. a genuine

  1823. fear of

  1824. Christ's

  1825. chastisement

  1826. for disobedience.

  1827. How better

  1828. and how much

  1829. more satisfying

  1830. it is for

  1831. us to simply

  1832. obey Him.

  1833. So in

  1834. summary,

  1835. Paul tells

  1836. us in

  1837. this passage

  1838. that we

  1839. are not

  1840. to be

  1841. unwise or

  1842. foolish or

  1843. waste our

  1844. time in

  1845. drunkenness.

  1846. Rather,

  1847. we are to

  1848. look critically

  1849. at our

  1850. walk.

  1851. We are to

  1852. discern the

  1853. will of the

  1854. Lord with

  1855. gospel criteria

  1856. for any

  1857. given

  1858. circumstance,

  1859. any given

  1860. encounter in

  1861. this life.

  1862. And we

  1863. must be

  1864. continually

  1865. filled by

  1866. the Spirit.

  1867. And when

  1868. we obey

  1869. these

  1870. commandments,

  1871. our life

  1872. will be

  1873. characterized

  1874. by speaking

  1875. and singing

  1876. scriptural

  1877. truths,

  1878. giving thanks

  1879. always to

  1880. God and

  1881. submitting to

  1882. one another.

  1883. And all

  1884. of this is

  1885. in the

  1886. context of

  1887. the local

  1888. church.

  1889. So there

  1890. you have it.

  1891. Now you're

  1892. all wondering

  1893. what did

  1894. most of that

  1895. have to do

  1896. with me

  1897. stewarding

  1898. my time

  1899. better?

  1900. What happened

  1901. to those

  1902. questions asked

  1903. at the

  1904. beginning?

  1905. How should

  1906. I spend

  1907. my time?

  1908. How do

  1909. I find

  1910. balance in

  1911. life?

  1912. How do

  1913. I know

  1914. I'm not

  1915. neglecting

  1916. the

  1917. responsibilities

  1918. God has

  1919. given me

  1920. at work,

  1921. at home,

  1922. and at

  1923. church?

  1924. But based

  1925. on our

  1926. text today,

  1927. and others

  1928. that we do

  1929. not have

  1930. time for,

  1931. I want to

  1932. suggest

  1933. strongly that

  1934. these are

  1935. the wrong

  1936. questions.

  1937. These are

  1938. not questions

  1939. we as

  1940. Christians

  1941. should really

  1942. be all that

  1943. worried about.

  1944. and I

  1945. would even

  1946. say they're

  1947. the wrong

  1948. focus.

  1949. But Paul

  1950. has provided

  1951. a different

  1952. way,

  1953. a better

  1954. way to

  1955. spend our

  1956. lives,

  1957. to consider

  1958. how we

  1959. spend our

  1960. lives,

  1961. to the

  1962. glory of

  1963. God.

  1964. If you

  1965. notice,

  1966. Paul's

  1967. emphasis

  1968. in this

  1969. text is

  1970. not on

  1971. a checklist.

  1972. It is

  1973. not on a

  1974. pie chart

  1975. for how

  1976. you should

  1977. break up

  1978. your hours

  1979. and minutes

  1980. throughout

  1981. the day,

  1982. nor is

  1983. a step-by-step

  1984. process for

  1985. better managing

  1986. your time.

  1987. In fact,

  1988. the aspect

  1989. of time

  1990. in this

  1991. text is

  1992. not even

  1993. the focus

  1994. or the

  1995. main thing.

  1996. It is

  1997. a footnote

  1998. to Paul's

  1999. larger

  2000. concern.

  2001. And it

  2002. is a

  2003. footnote

  2004. that is

  2005. taken good

  2006. care of

  2007. if Paul's

  2008. larger

  2009. concern

  2010. is rightly

  2011. accounted

  2012. for.

  2013. So imagine

  2014. that,

  2015. this time

  2016. management

  2017. thing,

  2018. this thing

  2019. we're all

  2020. wondering

  2021. about,

  2022. this thing

  2023. that there's

  2024. an article

  2025. published on

  2026. every single

  2027. day from

  2028. all kinds

  2029. of people

  2030. with all

  2031. kinds of

  2032. views,

  2033. not a

  2034. big deal

  2035. to Paul.

  2036. And yet,

  2037. Paul includes

  2038. this pervasive

  2039. phrase,

  2040. redeeming

  2041. the time.

  2042. He literally

  2043. says,

  2044. all of your

  2045. time is

  2046. redeemed

  2047. in the flow

  2048. of his

  2049. larger concern.

  2050. Now that's

  2051. an astounding

  2052. claim.

  2053. And it is

  2054. an astounding

  2055. claim he does

  2056. not pause

  2057. to make.

  2058. I think if

  2059. you went and

  2060. found all

  2061. these 20

  2062. year old

  2063. bloggers who

  2064. think a lot

  2065. of people

  2066. are reading

  2067. their blogs

  2068. but they

  2069. aren't,

  2070. talking about

  2071. time

  2072. management,

  2073. and they

  2074. haven't

  2075. figured it

  2076. out yet

  2077. because they're

  2078. 20,

  2079. would be

  2080. shocked when

  2081. they read

  2082. this passage

  2083. because it

  2084. is such

  2085. a brief,

  2086. brief footnote.

  2087. But Paul

  2088. makes it.

  2089. He says,

  2090. all the

  2091. time is

  2092. redeemed.

  2093. And so I

  2094. think what

  2095. this reveals

  2096. to us is

  2097. that we

  2098. are 21st

  2099. century

  2100. American

  2101. Christians.

  2102. In other

  2103. words,

  2104. we still

  2105. ask the

  2106. kinds of

  2107. questions the

  2108. world,

  2109. the culture

  2110. around us

  2111. ask.

  2112. We don't

  2113. realize how

  2114. much our

  2115. thinking really

  2116. is of this

  2117. culture,

  2118. this time

  2119. and place

  2120. rather than

  2121. biblically

  2122. informed.

  2123. We have

  2124. thought about

  2125. time the

  2126. way the

  2127. world around

  2128. us has

  2129. thought about

  2130. time and

  2131. therefore we

  2132. have asked

  2133. the questions

  2134. they ask

  2135. about time,

  2136. though we

  2137. try to give

  2138. our Bible

  2139. answers.

  2140. But hear

  2141. this,

  2142. God is

  2143. less concerned

  2144. about how

  2145. you spend

  2146. your time,

  2147. less concerned

  2148. about how

  2149. you spend

  2150. your time,

  2151. and more

  2152. concerned about

  2153. what kind

  2154. of person

  2155. you are

  2156. and if you

  2157. are faithful.

  2158. And of

  2159. course,

  2160. if you are

  2161. the kind

  2162. of person

  2163. God is

  2164. calling you

  2165. to be,

  2166. and if you

  2167. are faithful,

  2168. then you

  2169. will use

  2170. your time

  2171. wisely.

  2172. You see

  2173. the freedom

  2174. in this

  2175. kind of

  2176. thinking.

  2177. And it's

  2178. worth mentioning

  2179. just again

  2180. to show you

  2181. how culturally

  2182. informed we

  2183. are in the

  2184. way we

  2185. think about

  2186. time,

  2187. that the

  2188. idea of

  2189. the eight

  2190. hour work

  2191. day or

  2192. the recreational

  2193. weekend or

  2194. even the 90

  2195. minute church

  2196. service are

  2197. all man-made

  2198. ideas.

  2199. And that's

  2200. not to say

  2201. they're inherently

  2202. evil,

  2203. it's just to

  2204. recognize these

  2205. are not

  2206. biblically

  2207. authoritative

  2208. establishments

  2209. that we

  2210. often treat

  2211. as biblically

  2212. authoritative

  2213. establishments.

  2214. And in fact,

  2215. in all of

  2216. scripture,

  2217. you will never

  2218. find God

  2219. say anything

  2220. about hours

  2221. and minutes

  2222. that we

  2223. must do

  2224. this or

  2225. that.

  2226. You won't

  2227. find it.

  2228. The Bible

  2229. just does

  2230. not discuss

  2231. or talk

  2232. about time

  2233. the way

  2234. we 21st

  2235. century

  2236. Americans

  2237. do.

  2238. So we

  2239. need to

  2240. change the

  2241. way we

  2242. think about

  2243. time to

  2244. conform to

  2245. the larger

  2246. concerns that

  2247. God has

  2248. breathed into

  2249. Paul in the

  2250. writing of

  2251. Ephesians.

  2252. things.

  2253. Now to

  2254. offer some

  2255. practical

  2256. advice,

  2257. I'm going

  2258. to lean

  2259. on an

  2260. author named

  2261. Rick Siegel.

  2262. Perhaps

  2263. you're familiar

  2264. with him

  2265. from Desiring

  2266. God.

  2267. He offers

  2268. five ways

  2269. to use

  2270. time wisely

  2271. and not

  2272. waste time

  2273. thinking about

  2274. time management.

  2275. And we'll

  2276. cover these

  2277. quickly.

  2278. So five

  2279. ways.

  2280. Number one,

  2281. as a Christian,

  2282. know you are

  2283. never going to

  2284. run out of

  2285. time.

  2286. What a

  2287. wonderful

  2288. thought.

  2289. We have

  2290. all of

  2291. eternity to

  2292. do the

  2293. things we

  2294. dream to

  2295. do and to

  2296. do it all

  2297. to the

  2298. glory of

  2299. God without

  2300. sin.

  2301. It's

  2302. irrational to

  2303. be concerned

  2304. about running

  2305. out of

  2306. time.

  2307. Number two,

  2308. remember people

  2309. are the object

  2310. of your

  2311. Christian vocation,

  2312. not the

  2313. means.

  2314. So do not

  2315. view people as

  2316. anything other

  2317. than people,

  2318. the mission

  2319. field, and

  2320. you will see

  2321. priority take

  2322. shape in your

  2323. life.

  2324. That is God

  2325. inspired.

  2326. And everyone

  2327. you meet either

  2328. needs to know

  2329. Jesus or know

  2330. more about

  2331. Jesus.

  2332. And we as

  2333. Christians can

  2334. offer both.

  2335. One to the

  2336. believer, the

  2337. other to the

  2338. unbeliever.

  2339. Number three,

  2340. seek to

  2341. de-automate

  2342. your relationships.

  2343. So spend

  2344. less time, and

  2345. I would argue

  2346. preferably no

  2347. time, wasting

  2348. your life on

  2349. social media,

  2350. and other

  2351. places where

  2352. you fake

  2353. relationships.

  2354. go spend

  2355. time somewhere

  2356. with someone

  2357. and develop

  2358. a true

  2359. friendship.

  2360. Siegel adds

  2361. that we

  2362. ought to see

  2363. unexpected

  2364. interruptions

  2365. from people

  2366. in our

  2367. day as a

  2368. divine

  2369. appointment,

  2370. opportunities for

  2371. God to use

  2372. us in some

  2373. way to

  2374. encourage or

  2375. equip or

  2376. evangelize

  2377. somebody else,

  2378. to serve

  2379. others.

  2380. And number

  2381. four,

  2382. detox on

  2383. output and

  2384. thrive instead

  2385. on the

  2386. greatest

  2387. commandments.

  2388. Don't worry

  2389. as much about

  2390. productivity if

  2391. you are faithful

  2392. to God and

  2393. concerning your

  2394. walk.

  2395. Productivity

  2396. will come.

  2397. But instead

  2398. thrive on the

  2399. greatest

  2400. commandment.

  2401. Love God

  2402. and love

  2403. neighbor.

  2404. This is the

  2405. greatest commandment

  2406. that dictates

  2407. everything we

  2408. do.

  2409. If you find

  2410. that all of

  2411. your time is

  2412. not geared

  2413. towards loving

  2414. God and loving

  2415. neighbor, I

  2416. guarantee you,

  2417. you are wasting

  2418. your life away.

  2419. This is

  2420. scripture.

  2421. And number

  2422. five, make the

  2423. glory of God

  2424. the goal of

  2425. all your

  2426. activity.

  2427. As Paul says,

  2428. whether we eat

  2429. or drink or

  2430. whatever we do,

  2431. do it all

  2432. unto the glory

  2433. of God.

  2434. Your job,

  2435. your family,

  2436. your church

  2437. involvement,

  2438. your chores,

  2439. your reading,

  2440. your entertainment,

  2441. everything,

  2442. your vacations,

  2443. you don't get a

  2444. break from God.

  2445. God is your

  2446. rest.

  2447. And it

  2448. should be

  2449. redeemed in

  2450. such a way

  2451. so as to

  2452. glorify God.

  2453. So that's

  2454. what Rick

  2455. Siegel has

  2456. to say,

  2457. but there's

  2458. something close

  2459. to home here

  2460. at CFC

  2461. that we need

  2462. to discuss

  2463. before we

  2464. close,

  2465. something

  2466. specific.

  2467. It's my

  2468. concern as

  2469. well as the

  2470. elders that

  2471. not that there's

  2472. a list of

  2473. names or

  2474. anything like

  2475. that,

  2476. but it's

  2477. just a

  2478. growing

  2479. recognition

  2480. that more

  2481. and more

  2482. people are

  2483. not making

  2484. time for

  2485. our church

  2486. outside of

  2487. Sunday morning.

  2488. It's been a

  2489. hectic season

  2490. these past few

  2491. years.

  2492. Babies are

  2493. flying out all

  2494. over the place.

  2495. People are

  2496. getting married

  2497. and just life

  2498. is moving.

  2499. But it's been

  2500. our observation

  2501. that many are

  2502. turning more

  2503. and more

  2504. inward to

  2505. their families

  2506. at the

  2507. expense of

  2508. the church.

  2509. And please

  2510. hear me,

  2511. families,

  2512. extremely

  2513. important,

  2514. extremely,

  2515. but I fear

  2516. they're being

  2517. used as an

  2518. excuse far

  2519. too often.

  2520. Our cleaning

  2521. crews,

  2522. just for example,

  2523. barely exist.

  2524. Just last

  2525. week,

  2526. Madison and

  2527. I,

  2528. it took us

  2529. about three

  2530. hours to

  2531. clean the

  2532. building by

  2533. ourselves.

  2534. Sarah Kohler

  2535. was there

  2536. helpfully

  2537. watching the

  2538. kids so we

  2539. could work.

  2540. So I guess

  2541. the three of

  2542. us were

  2543. there,

  2544. but the

  2545. point is it

  2546. took us way

  2547. longer than

  2548. it should.

  2549. And there

  2550. should be way

  2551. more volunteers.

  2552. I remember

  2553. the days here

  2554. when our

  2555. clean crews

  2556. averaged 15

  2557. to 20

  2558. people and

  2559. it took 40

  2560. minutes.

  2561. And it

  2562. was fun.

  2563. And that

  2564. happens regularly

  2565. because so

  2566. few are

  2567. volunteering.

  2568. I've asked

  2569. before and I

  2570. can't tell you

  2571. how many times

  2572. someone has

  2573. said,

  2574. well it's

  2575. busy with

  2576. a new

  2577. baby.

  2578. And I

  2579. just,

  2580. you know,

  2581. really like,

  2582. I didn't

  2583. realize both

  2584. parents needed

  2585. to be home

  2586. to watch

  2587. one baby.

  2588. Let alone

  2589. you could

  2590. both come

  2591. and we

  2592. have people

  2593. like Sarah

  2594. Kohler or

  2595. whoever watch

  2596. the kids

  2597. while the

  2598. rest of us

  2599. clean.

  2600. It's not

  2601. difficult to

  2602. figure out.

  2603. Likewise,

  2604. our volunteers

  2605. for child

  2606. care also

  2607. barely exist.

  2608. The same

  2609. few people

  2610. are taking

  2611. care of that

  2612. burden every

  2613. week for the

  2614. rest of us.

  2615. And the

  2616. sad one

  2617. about this

  2618. is that

  2619. most of

  2620. us are

  2621. here any

  2622. given Sunday

  2623. so why

  2624. is it a lot

  2625. of us

  2626. can't volunteer

  2627. our time to

  2628. help out

  2629. with child

  2630. care?

  2631. And I

  2632. could go

  2633. on but I

  2634. just offer

  2635. these as a

  2636. few simple

  2637. and basic

  2638. examples that

  2639. show our

  2640. church is

  2641. being neglected

  2642. by some of

  2643. its own

  2644. members.

  2645. members.

  2646. And I

  2647. don't know

  2648. what to

  2649. conclude about

  2650. that other

  2651. than seeing

  2652. people become

  2653. less willing

  2654. to sacrificially

  2655. make time to

  2656. serve the

  2657. body.

  2658. And this is

  2659. something we

  2660. need to remind

  2661. ourselves.

  2662. God is not

  2663. merely calling

  2664. you to serve

  2665. the church

  2666. when it is

  2667. convenient or

  2668. mutually

  2669. beneficial.

  2670. Far more

  2671. often, in fact,

  2672. almost exclusively,

  2673. the New Testament

  2674. describes believers

  2675. serving sacrificially

  2676. through their

  2677. time and

  2678. their talents

  2679. and their

  2680. money.

  2681. So notice that

  2682. key word,

  2683. sacrificially.

  2684. It's not easy,

  2685. but it's normal

  2686. for the believer.

  2687. We throw

  2688. around phrases

  2689. like,

  2690. whatever is

  2691. best for my

  2692. family as

  2693. our all

  2694. encompassing

  2695. criteria.

  2696. But have you

  2697. considered that

  2698. what is best

  2699. for your

  2700. family may be

  2701. to take them

  2702. to church at

  2703. an inconvenient

  2704. time, to

  2705. sacrificially

  2706. serve, and

  2707. by that example

  2708. teach them,

  2709. your wife,

  2710. your husband,

  2711. your kids,

  2712. teach them,

  2713. life is about

  2714. the glory of

  2715. God, not

  2716. the comfort

  2717. of man.

  2718. I mean,

  2719. consider

  2720. Christ.

  2721. He left

  2722. the glories

  2723. of heaven

  2724. for fallen

  2725. earth.

  2726. He was

  2727. worshipped

  2728. continually by

  2729. angels in

  2730. heaven.

  2731. He had

  2732. comfort,

  2733. power,

  2734. glory beyond

  2735. imagination.

  2736. And yet,

  2737. we know from

  2738. Philippians,

  2739. he took the

  2740. form of a

  2741. man, took

  2742. the form of

  2743. a slave.

  2744. He was

  2745. mocked,

  2746. despised,

  2747. rejected,

  2748. and ultimately

  2749. killed.

  2750. And yet,

  2751. this was his

  2752. plan.

  2753. He came to

  2754. do it.

  2755. A 30-year

  2756. project in his

  2757. earthly life,

  2758. by the way,

  2759. a project in

  2760. eternity, but

  2761. that's for

  2762. another day.

  2763. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:23

  2764. verse 23,

  2765. this Jesus

  2766. delivered up

  2767. according to the

  2768. definite plan

  2769. and foreknowledge

  2770. of God,

  2771. you crucified

  2772. and killed

  2773. by the hands

  2774. of lawless

  2775. men.

  2776. Christ allowed

  2777. and sovereignly

  2778. planned great

  2779. wickedness and

  2780. great shame

  2781. to be done

  2782. to his

  2783. son without

  2784. sin.

  2785. And why?

  2786. To serve

  2787. and establish

  2788. the church,

  2789. the people

  2790. of God.

  2791. We needed

  2792. someone to pay

  2793. the penalty we

  2794. owed for our

  2795. sins to God

  2796. the Father.

  2797. And Christ

  2798. did not merely

  2799. suffer a few

  2800. nails on a

  2801. cross,

  2802. but he

  2803. suffered the

  2804. wrath of

  2805. God,

  2806. something far

  2807. more terrible

  2808. and unimaginable

  2809. that we will

  2810. never experience

  2811. as believers.

  2812. And he did

  2813. all of this

  2814. to serve

  2815. his bride,

  2816. the church,

  2817. for his

  2818. glory.

  2819. Now what I'm

  2820. about to say

  2821. is a massive

  2822. understatement,

  2823. but imagine

  2824. the inconvenience

  2825. this would have

  2826. been for

  2827. Jesus.

  2828. And yet we

  2829. struggle to

  2830. show up on

  2831. Saturday morning

  2832. to vacuum

  2833. the carpet.

  2834. Now you may

  2835. be strongly

  2836. agreeing with

  2837. me and the

  2838. elders about

  2839. this growing

  2840. concern.

  2841. You may

  2842. strongly disagree

  2843. right now.

  2844. Whatever your

  2845. thoughts,

  2846. whatever your

  2847. conclusions,

  2848. in light of

  2849. our text today,

  2850. I just ask

  2851. that you pray

  2852. about it.

  2853. That you look

  2854. critically at

  2855. your walk

  2856. and discern

  2857. the will of

  2858. the Lord.

  2859. Be honest

  2860. with yourself

  2861. and be open

  2862. to the Spirit's

  2863. leading if you

  2864. begin to see

  2865. that you

  2866. could serve

  2867. more.

  2868. So in

  2869. closing,

  2870. if you want

  2871. to spend

  2872. your time

  2873. well,

  2874. then watch

  2875. your walk

  2876. closely and

  2877. discern the

  2878. will of the

  2879. Lord.

  2880. Use this

  2881. as your

  2882. criteria for

  2883. everything

  2884. you do.

  2885. Do not

  2886. worry about

  2887. managing time

  2888. so much.

  2889. That's merely

  2890. a symptom.

  2891. Look critically

  2892. at your walk

  2893. before God

  2894. and all of

  2895. your time,

  2896. all of it,

  2897. whatever you

  2898. are doing,

  2899. it will be

  2900. redeemed time

  2901. for the good

  2902. of man

  2903. and the

  2904. glory of

  2905. God.

  2906. So to that

  2907. end,

  2908. let's pray.

  2909. Let's pray.

  2910. Let's pray.

  2911. Let's pray.
