  1. Good morning. It is a privilege to be with you this morning and preach God's word.

  2. ! For today's message, I have included an outline in your bulletin that will be helpful as we go through this topic of stewarding your Lord's day.

  3. While Nathan's on sabbatical, the elders have decided that a series on stewardship would be beneficial to us.

  4. The normal rhythm of our preaching is a verse-by-verse exposition.

  5. We hope to preach expository, expositionally, and our hope is to bring out the meaning of Scripture and to apply it to your lives.

  6. During this series, we are taking a topical approach in looking at different topics of Scripture.

  7. We're going to do this in four parts. Last week, Zach took the topic of preaching on stewarding our time.

  8. Today, my responsibility and privilege is to teach our second message on stewarding our Lord's day.

  9. To teach a series on stewardship, we need to define what stewardship is.

  10. Stewardship, when discussing Scripture, involves taking care of all that God has given us.

  11. So for this message, I'm going to define stewardship, and you'll see the definition,

  12. as something God has entrusted to us for His supreme glory and our ultimate good.

  13. What God has given to us is our responsibility to care for as God has instructed in His Word.

  14. So when we talk about God's supreme glory, it means that in everything that we've been given,

  15. that we use it or manage it for God's glory.

  16. And all these things should go to bring about good in our lives and to the glory of God.

  17. So the main point for today's message is the Lord's day is God's gift to us,

  18. and we have a responsibility to steward this day for His supreme glory and our ultimate good.

  19. Now that we've defined what stewardship means, let's clearly define what the Lord's day means.

  20. In the 1689 London Baptist Confession, there is a helpful summary of what the Lord's day is.

  21. On your outline, if you flip to the back, I've provided this definition if you want to read with me.

  22. In 1689 chapter 22, paragraphs 7 through 8, it says,

  23. It is the law of nature that in general portion of time specified by God should be set apart for the worship of God.

  24. So by His Word, in a positive, moral, and perpetual commandment that obligates everyone in every age,

  25. He has specifically anointed one day in seven for a Sabbath to be kept holy to Him.

  26. From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, the appointed day was the last day of the week.

  27. After the resurrection of Christ, it was changed to the first day of the week, which is called the Lord's day.

  28. This day is to be kept to the end of the age as a Christian Sabbath,

  29. since the observance of the last day of the week has been abolished.

  30. The Sabbath is kept holy to the Lord when people have first prepared their hearts appropriately

  31. and arranged their everyday affairs in advance.

  32. Then they observe a holy rest all day from their works, words, and thoughts about secular employment and recreation.

  33. Not only that, but they also fill the whole time with public and private acts of worship

  34. and the duties of necessity and mercy.

  35. So this is how I would define the Lord's day that I think that we've seen in church history

  36. and what I believe the Bible teaches for us.

  37. To see this in Scripture, though, I hope for us to go to Exodus 20, verses 1 through 11.

    Exodus 20:1–11

  38. And then we'll spend our time there, and then we'll spend our time in Hebrews 4.

  39. So if you'll take your copy of God's Word and turn to Exodus 20 with me.

  40. Exodus 20, starting in verse 1.

  41. Hear and believe the word of the Lord.

  42. And God spoke all these words, saying,

  43. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  44. You shall have no other gods before me.

  45. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,

  46. or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

  47. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God,

  48. visiting iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  49. but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  50. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  51. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  52. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  53. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  54. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  55. On it you shall not do any work you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant

  56. or your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates.

  57. For in six days the Lord made the heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them,

  58. and rested on the seventh day.

  59. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  60. Here in Exodus 20 we are presented with what we call the Ten Commandments.

  61. We see that the first four commandments instruct us on what it looks like to love God.

  62. And the last six commandments instruct us on what it looks like to love others.

  63. So the first four commandments help us understand that to love God is to worship him and him alone.

  64. In the first four commands he specifies how he is to be worshipped.

  65. Look at the first command with me.

  66. He says, in the first command he shows us who is to be worshipped.

  67. In the second command he tells us how to be worshipped.

  68. In the third command he directs us in what way we worship him.

  69. And in the fourth command he advises us on when we should engage in public worship.

  70. The commands provide us with the what, the who, and the how for worshipping God.

  71. But it also provides us of the when.

  72. So we'll see this in three points.

  73. The first point today is the Lord's day is a day of worship to Yahweh alone.

  74. And the sub-point is the name of Yahweh.

  75. When we begin this text, when we look at verses 1 through 2, we see the phrase that says,

  76. I am the Lord your God.

  77. The Lord in all caps in our copy of God's word is a translation of his personal name, Yahweh.

  78. When we read this word in the Bible, it calls to mind who God is.

  79. It did for the Israelites.

  80. When God revealed himself to Moses, he said to him, I am who I am.

  81. And he said to Moses, say this to the people of Israel, I am has sent you.

  82. In Exodus 3, God's revelation of his personal name, he reveals that he is who he is.

  83. Or this could translate as, he will be who he will be.

  84. In this verse, we see a clear testimony that God has always been and that he always will be.

  85. God is who he is all the time.

  86. There is not a moment that we will find when God is not God or has given up his godness.

  87. He has always been.

  88. He is and he always will be.

  89. Our God will never change.

  90. So Yahweh will always be who he is all the time.

  91. This is the great I am.

  92. When we read about God and his name, it defines who he is.

  93. It carries an understanding of the wondrous works he's done and what he is like.

  94. We naturally do this too.

  95. We naturally associate what people are like with names.

  96. So when you think about naming a kid, you don't choose certain names because it reminds you of certain things.

  97. In our case, we named our son William.

  98. William is a name for Bill, who is a mentor of mine and has blessed me and set a good example of godliness.

  99. So we wanted to honor Bill in naming our son William, but we also want William to walk in the example that Bill has set.

  100. It's a name that brings great association.

  101. It reminds me that Bill is a man who has walked faithfully in serving the Lord and he loves him with his whole heart.

  102. So when we read the all caps of Yahweh in verse or of the Lord in verse 2, we know that God's personal name is here that says Yahweh.

  103. When it says, I am Yahweh, it reminds us that this is God.

  104. Verse 2 also says, Yahweh, your God.

  105. This is Yahweh, the God of the people Israel.

  106. When the people hear, I am Yahweh, your God, it carries the meaning that this is the great I am who has saved them and cares for them.

  107. We see in the verse that he defines who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  108. They are reminded that he is God and that he'll always be God.

  109. So when I consider thinking of God in a way that's helpful and simplistic and considering his attributes, a way that's been helpful for me is to remind myself that God is great and God is good.

  110. So I'd love us to consider God's greatness and goodness for a moment.

  111. In considering God's greatness, Yahweh is incomprehensible.

  112. He is far too great for us to even know.

  113. His name is too wonderful.

  114. His thoughts are too deep.

  115. His power is too great.

  116. His wisdom is too inscrutable.

  117. His being is too vast.

  118. Our God does not depend upon anyone.

  119. He does not change like shifting shadows.

  120. He does not have fleeting or changing emotions as if we cannot depend upon him.

  121. No, Yahweh is independent.

  122. He is all say.

  123. All things come from him, from within him.

  124. And he does not depend upon anything.

  125. He alone is God.

  126. He alone is Yahweh.

  127. Isn't this how we see in Psalms when David describes God?

  128. Psalm 145, 3 says,

  129. Great is Yahweh and greatly to be praised.

  130. His greatness is unsearchable.

  131. Psalm 147, 5.

  132. Great is our Lord and abundant power.

  133. His understanding is beyond measure.

  134. How about how Isaiah describes them in Isaiah 46?

  135. I am God and there is none other.

  136. I am God and there is none like me.

  137. Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.

  138. Saying,

  139. My counsel shall stand and I will accomplish my purpose.

  140. Or how about Isaiah 55, verses 8 through 9?

    Isaiah 55:8–9

  141. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, declares Yahweh.

  142. For as high as the heaven is above the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways,

  143. and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

  144. Truly, God is incomprehensible and majestic and too great for us to know.

  145. But He is also good.

  146. He has revealed Himself to us in His creation and revelation.

  147. And we see His goodness.

  148. He is full of steadfast love.

  149. He lavishes His mercy and grace upon us.

  150. He is kind and compassionate.

  151. He is holy and just.

  152. He sees us and knows us.

  153. He is near to the broken and takes care of the widows and the orphans.

  154. We see this also in the Psalms when David says,

  155. Yahweh works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.

  156. He may known His ways to Moses, His acts to the people of Israel.

  157. Yahweh is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

  158. He will not always chide, nor will He keep His anger forever.

  159. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

  160. For as high as the heaven is above the earth, so great is His steadfast love towards those who fear Him.

  161. And as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.

  162. As a father shows compassion to his children, so Yahweh shows compassion to those who fear Him.

  163. For He knows our frame.

  164. He remembers that we are dust.

  165. Or how about Psalm 147.3?

  166. He says, He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

  167. So when we read Exodus and we see in verse 2 that He's introduced as,

  168. I am Yahweh, your God.

  169. He shows His redemption in that verse.

  170. But it also carries this meaning that this is God.

  171. And it should cause us to be enthralled.

  172. It should cause us to praise that this is the God that we come now to worship.

  173. On our Lord's Day, when we steward it, when we manage our day,

  174. we're preparing our hearts to go and meet the living God in the church of the living God.

  175. So when we get here, we see that this is how Moses introduces the Ten Commandments.

  176. After presenting himself to Israel as Yahweh, the God who has saved them from their slavery,

  177. He then gives them His gracious rules for how to love and worship Him.

  178. These rules are a demonstration of God's grace to inform us how we should live.

  179. He has revealed Himself to us.

  180. For the unbelieving, these rules serve as a rod that condemns, that shows one of their sin.

  181. But for the believing, these rules are a guide and a counsel.

  182. A counselor.

  183. Psalm 119.18 says,

  184. Open my eyes that I may behold the wondrous things of your law.

  185. Psalm 119.24 says,

  186. Your testimonies are my delight.

  187. They are my counselors.

  188. And Psalm 119.10 says,

  189. The law is more to be desired than gold.

  190. Even much fine gold.

  191. And sweeter also than the honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.

  192. According to the Bible, the law is something that is sweeter than honey and richer than gold.

  193. And it is good.

  194. And it is gracious that we have them so that we can love and worship God properly.

  195. So in the first three commandments, we see that because God is Yahweh, He deserves our worship exclusively.

  196. He commands that there is no one before Him and there is nothing that we can do to resemble Him on earth that will properly worship Him.

  197. In fact, for those who make images to represent God and worship Him,

  198. when they make something and they bow down to it, they're actually heaping up judgment.

  199. Verse 5 says,

  200. I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous God.

  201. We should not make images to worship or resemble God because we have God to worship.

  202. Our love and affection finds its chief end and purpose in God.

  203. Man and woman, God's image bearers, the crown of His glorious creation,

  204. find their purpose and fulfillment in the worship of God.

  205. Creation and all that is within it was made to worship and glorify God.

  206. That's what the Bible is teaching from beginning to end.

  207. We are image bearers and our goal is to reflect the majesty and the glory and the splendor of our God.

  208. Then we get to the third commandment and it directs us on how we should live in a way that honors Yahweh with our words and our speech.

  209. The word here, take, is the Hebrew word that is used to mean to carry or to lift.

  210. The verse is saying that we should not bear the name of Yahweh in a worthless manner.

  211. As followers of the one true God, the way we speak and live is not inconsequential,

  212. but it matters consequently.

  213. When we speak, our words represent the God we worship.

  214. When we act, our actions reflect the God we serve.

  215. The third commandment directs us to bear God's image well,

  216. to reflect and represent Him well in the world we live.

  217. So finally, the fourth commandment informs the time in which we should worship.

  218. In the first three commandments, one sees that God requires worship exclusively,

  219. and this is done in how we live for Him.

  220. According to the first three commandments, our worship to Yahweh is every day.

  221. Every day we're commanded to worship God and bear His name well.

  222. In the fourth commandment, God reminds the people that while they represent and image God every moment,

  223. there is a special day that God has established for His people to worship Him.

  224. This precious and sacred day is the day we call the Sabbath day.

  225. Leads me to point number two.

  226. The Lord's day is the day of resting in Christ.

  227. So look at Exodus 28 with me.

  228. It says,

  229. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  230. This verse here is not establishing a Sabbath day for the people of God to start doing.

  231. It is pointing back to Genesis 2, 1-3,

  232. and telling the people to remember the Sabbath day that He has established.

  233. This command was established in creation and was meant for the people of Israel to keep.

  234. Genesis 2, 1-3 says,

  235. Thus the heavens and earth were finished and all the host of them.

  236. And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done

  237. and rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.

  238. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy

  239. because on it God rested from all His work that He had done in creation.

  240. We see here that the Sabbath day is what we call a creation ordinance or a creation law.

  241. It was established in creation for all humanity.

  242. At this point there wasn't Israel and other nations.

  243. It was Ab and Eve.

  244. It was meant for all humanity to observe.

  245. It is meant to be kept from the beginning of creation

  246. and to the end of the world when we have final and internal rest.

  247. So in Genesis 2, 1-3, we see a few things.

  248. We see that God has instituted a pattern or rhythm meant to be kept of work and rest.

  249. For six days you shall labor,

  250. but on the seventh day you shall observe the Sabbath rest.

  251. Number two, the Sabbath day was a day of rest.

  252. And number three, the seventh day was made holy.

  253. It is a day to be sanctified by all men in the day in which God has blessed.

  254. So when we get to Exodus 28, the word remember is recalling.

  255. It's not establishing a new thing to practice.

  256. It's something that God has reminded us that has been since creation.

  257. The use of the word remember shows us that we have a sacred practice established by God since creation.

  258. This command is for the perpetuity of the sabbatical rhythm.

  259. Six days we work, one day we rest.

  260. The command emphasizes the continuity of a Sabbath day.

  261. This day is to be exalted as a significant day of the week where we come,

  262. revere, and worship Yahweh, and we find rest in Him.

  263. The Westminster Larger Catechism, in discussing the Fourth Commandment, asked this question.

  264. Why is the word remember set in the beginning of the Fourth Commandment?

  265. And the response of the catechism is,

  266. the word remember is set in the beginning of the Fourth Commandment,

  267. partly because of the great benefit of remembering it.

  268. We being thereby helped in our preparation to keep it,

  269. and in keeping it, better to keep all the rest of the commandments.

  270. And to continue a thankful remembrance of two great benefits of creation and redemption,

  271. and partly because we're very ready to forget it.

  272. The Sabbath helps God's people to be reminded of the sanctity of the day that God has set,

  273. and it's important that we learn to regulate our lives around it.

  274. When our lives are in tune with the sabbatical rhythm,

  275. we are faithful in obeying the rest of the commandments to live before God.

  276. The one day of rest of this week was part of God's good design for us,

  277. and God Himself modeled it for us in creation.

  278. But we also see that remember is used because we are quick to forget.

  279. We're quick to forget the worship of God and to make Him holy.

  280. A healthy sabbatical practice bolsters a healthy holy living every day.

  281. We rest on the Sabbath so that we can rest in Christ every day.

  282. They are not mutually exclusive things, as if they're opponents,

  283. but they are true in holy duties together.

  284. As we see in the Ten Commandments,

  285. three are about worshiping God all the time.

  286. One's about time.

  287. In the same way, we should rest in Christ all the time.

  288. But one command would be to rest in Him on a special day.

  289. In Exodus 20, 8 through 11,

  290. we see the continuation of the Sabbath.

  291. When Jesus Christ came, lived, died,

  292. He completely obeyed and fulfilled the law.

  293. In the fulfillment of the law,

  294. the ceremonial and civil aspects of the law were fulfilled and abolished.

  295. The moral law, summarized in the Ten Commandments,

  296. serve as a rule of life for the church.

  297. For the Christian, the law is no longer a schoolmaster

  298. showing us of all the wrongs that we have done,

  299. but the law is a treasure and a guide,

  300. showing us how to love our God.

  301. The Christian's proper response to the law is delight,

  302. because they know how to love and worship God.

  303. Hebrews 4, 1 through 11,

  304. teaches us that there still remains a Sabbath rest

  305. for the believers today.

  306. If you'll turn there with me,

  307. we will look at Hebrews 4, 1 through 11.

  308. Beginning in verse 1.

  309. Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands,

  310. let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

  311. For good news came to us just as to them,

  312. but the message they heard did not benefit them,

  313. because they were not united by faith to those who listened.

  314. For we who have believed that rest,

  315. as He had said,

  316. as I swore on my wrath,

  317. they shall not enter my rest.

  318. Although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

  319. For He has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way.

  320. God rested on the seventh day from all His works.

  321. And again in this passage, He said,

  322. they shall not enter my rest.

  323. Since, therefore, it remains for some to enter it,

  324. and those who formerly received the good news

  325. failed to enter because of disobedience.

  326. And again, He appoints a certain day today,

  327. saying through David,

  328. so long afterward,

  329. and the words already quoted,

  330. Today, if you hear His voice,

  331. do not harden your hearts.

  332. For if Joshua had given them rest,

  333. God would have spoken of another day later on.

  334. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

  335. For whoever has entered God's rest

  336. has also rested from His works as God did from His.

  337. Let us, therefore, strive to enter that rest,

  338. so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  339. As you're reading, you probably observed that there is a lot of uses of the word rest.

  340. Rest is all throughout Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  341. And the author in this book is not using the rest in a linear fashion as one usage,

  342. but showing multiple types of rest.

  343. He shows the rest of God at creation,

  344. the rest of entering the promised land,

  345. and other types of rest.

  346. But he's using these examples to portray three types of rest we find in Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  347. We see in Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  348. there is one rest in Christ.

  349. We see this in verses 2 through 3.

  350. Number two,

  351. the saints' everlasting rest in heaven.

  352. We see this in verses 11 through 13.

  353. And number three,

  354. that there is a Sabbath rest.

  355. We see in Hebrews 4, 9.

  356. In verses 2 through 3,

  357. we see that rest is found in Christ.

  358. The one who believes in the gospel of Jesus Christ

  359. has been united to him by faith

  360. and enters his rest.

  361. In verses 11 through 13,

  362. there is a command to strive to enter everlasting rest.

  363. While the believer has rest in Christ,

  364. they continually set their eyes

  365. on the everlasting rest to come.

  366. This is done through God's living and abiding word.

  367. In verse 9,

  368. the author makes clear

  369. that there is a Sabbath observance for the believer.

  370. We see this in three ways.

  371. Number one,

  372. the phrase,

  373. there remains,

  374. is used to describe action

  375. that is presently required.

  376. And this is how the word remains

  377. is used in the rest of the book of Hebrews.

  378. Number two,

  379. the word used for rest

  380. is completely different than all the rest of the words.

  381. If you were a normal Greek reader in this time,

  382. reading Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  383. this is what you would hear.

  384. Katapausis,

  385. Katapausis,

  386. there remains a Katapausis,

  387. Katapausis,

  388. Sabbatismos,

  389. Katapausis,

  390. Katapausis.

  391. And in that,

  392. there seems to be a different word

  393. with a distinct and different meaning.

  394. This is demonstrated

  395. in the usage of this word.

  396. This word is only used one time

  397. in all of scripture.

  398. Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4:9

  399. verse 9.

  400. The third reason,

  401. while I think this means

  402. Sabbath rest,

  403. Sabbath keeping,

  404. or Sabbath observance,

  405. is that the word

  406. Sabbatismos

  407. is used four times

  408. in post-biblical writings.

  409. And in the Septuagint,

  410. it's used with

  411. relative associated terms

  412. that are associated with the same verbs

  413. to mean

  414. Sabbath observance.

  415. In both all post-biblical writings

  416. and the Septuagint

  417. with related terms,

  418. all of it means

  419. Sabbath observance

  420. or Sabbath keeping.

  421. The Lexan Theological Dictionary

  422. supports this definition,

  423. saying,

  424. this noun,

  425. Sabbatismos,

  426. is derived from the verb

  427. Sabbatidzo,

  428. which means

  429. the rest on the Sabbath

  430. and helps us understand

  431. that Sabbatismos

  432. means resting on the Sabbath.

  433. The usage

  434. in post-biblical sources

  435. and the Septuagint

  436. helps understand

  437. that the word Sabbatismos

  438. in Hebrews 4, 9

  439. has the meaning

  440. of Sabbath observance

  441. or Sabbath keeping.

  442. So when the believer

  443. is reading Hebrews 4, 9,

  444. it is to be understood

  445. that there remains

  446. a Sabbath keeping

  447. or a Sabbath rest

  448. for the people of God.

  449. Brothers and sisters,

  450. God has designed

  451. the Sabbath

  452. for man and woman

  453. as a practice

  454. to be kept

  455. until the blessed

  456. and happy rest

  457. that we have

  458. in all eternity.

  459. The 1689 says,

  460. this day is kept

  461. to the end of the age

  462. as a Christian Sabbath.

  463. While verse 9

  464. reminds the people

  465. of God

  466. of their sabbatical duty,

  467. verse 10

  468. gives the people

  469. of God

  470. the foundation

  471. of this duty.

  472. In verse 10,

  473. it says,

  474. for whoever

  475. has entered God's rest

  476. has also rested

  477. from his works

  478. as God did

  479. from his.

  480. The New King James

  481. translation says,

  482. he who has

  483. entered God's rest

  484. instead of whoever.

  485. I'm inclined

  486. to see that

  487. the New King James

  488. translation has

  489. a better rendering here.

  490. Verse 10

  491. is not talking

  492. about believers

  493. but of Christ.

  494. The only one

  495. who can truly rest

  496. from and in his works

  497. as God did

  498. in creation,

  499. in the creation

  500. of the world,

  501. is Jesus

  502. who did

  503. in the new creation.

  504. Just as God

  505. rested from his work

  506. of creation,

  507. Jesus now rests

  508. from his work

  509. of new creation.

  510. And as Hebrews 1.3

  511. says,

  512. he sat down

  513. at the right hand

  514. of majesty.

  515. The former Sabbath

  516. of the New Testament

  517. has been abolished

  518. and is fulfilled

  519. in the work of Christ.

  520. The Christian Sabbath

  521. is the first day

  522. of the week

  523. and is a day

  524. to find rest

  525. in the gospel

  526. of Jesus Christ.

  527. Jesus came,

  528. he lived,

  529. he died,

  530. and he rose again.

  531. That our old lives

  532. would be dead in him

  533. and our new lives

  534. would live in him.

  535. It is Christ

  536. who now lives in us.

  537. And just as Jesus

  538. rose from the dead

  539. bringing victory

  540. and life for us,

  541. we wake up

  542. on Sunday mornings

  543. to celebrate

  544. and to rest

  545. in Jesus Christ.

  546. Brothers and sisters,

  547. are there any here

  548. today that is

  549. weary

  550. or heavy laden?

  551. Are any here

  552. carrying the weight

  553. of their sin

  554. feeling

  555. condemnation?

  556. Are there any

  557. who are anxious

  558. or who are

  559. depressed

  560. or who feel

  561. unstable?

  562. Is there anyone

  563. who is suffering

  564. that feels

  565. as if their life

  566. is tossed

  567. to and fro

  568. like a wave?

  569. Look no further.

  570. The salve

  571. of your soul

  572. is presented

  573. to you this morning.

  574. You can come

  575. to the house

  576. of God

  577. on the day

  578. of rest

  579. and we have

  580. a Savior

  581. who gives rest

  582. to his children.

  583. Our Savior,

  584. Jesus Christ,

  585. offers rest

  586. from our sins

  587. and works.

  588. So today,

  589. you can come

  590. without price,

  591. privilege,

  592. or works

  593. and rest

  594. in Christ.

  595. As Matthew

  596. 11, 28-30 says,

  597. Come to me

  598. all who labor

  599. and heavy laden

  600. and I

  601. will give you

  602. rest.

  603. Take my yoke

  604. upon you

  605. and learn from me

  606. for I am gentle

  607. and lowly in heart

  608. and you will find

  609. rest for your souls.

  610. My yoke

  611. is easy

  612. and my burden

  613. is light.

  614. Our souls

  615. now rest

  616. in Christ

  617. as we look

  618. forward

  619. to the eternal

  620. rest to come.

  621. That one day

  622. we will be

  623. delivered from

  624. this body of death.

  625. One day

  626. we will no longer

  627. be stained

  628. by sin

  629. and be wrestling

  630. with the flesh.

  631. So as the day

  632. is approaching

  633. when our rest

  634. will be full

  635. and forever,

  636. brothers and sisters,

  637. rest now

  638. in Christ

  639. with your gaze

  640. looking forward

  641. towards eternity.

  642. Our Sabbath day

  643. is designed

  644. as a day

  645. of gospel rest.

  646. This is done

  647. corporately

  648. in our gatherings

  649. and privately

  650. in our homes.

  651. Truly,

  652. the Lord's day

  653. is a day

  654. of resting

  655. in Christ.

  656. Point number three.

  657. The Lord's day

  658. is a day

  659. to be kept

  660. holy to God.

  661. If you turn

  662. back over

  663. on your outline

  664. to the confession,

  665. chapter 22,

  666. paragraph 8

  667. summarizes

  668. how to sanctify

  669. the Lord's day,

  670. how to make

  671. this day holy.

  672. The Sabbath

  673. is kept holy

  674. to the Lord

  675. when people

  676. have first prepared

  677. their hearts

  678. appropriately

  679. and arrange

  680. their everyday

  681. affairs

  682. in advance.

  683. Then they

  684. observe a holy

  685. rest all day

  686. from their own

  687. works,

  688. words,

  689. and thoughts

  690. about their

  691. secular employment

  692. and recreation.

  693. Not only that,

  694. but they also

  695. fill the whole time

  696. with public

  697. and private

  698. acts of worship

  699. and duties

  700. of necessity

  701. and mercy.

  702. Under this point,

  703. we're going to have

  704. three sub-points.

  705. Preparation,

  706. observation,

  707. and contemplation.

  708. Number one,

  709. preparation.

  710. First,

  711. the Lord's day

  712. is a day

  713. holy,

  714. that is to be

  715. kept holy

  716. by preparing

  717. for the day.

  718. This preparation

  719. involves preparing

  720. our hearts

  721. before the Lord

  722. and taking care

  723. of our normal

  724. tasks in advance.

  725. When we work

  726. in the preparation

  727. for the Lord's day,

  728. we are keeping

  729. the day holy.

  730. Our preparation

  731. is giving time

  732. to make this day

  733. sacred and precious

  734. for the worship

  735. of Yahweh.

  736. So just as the

  737. Israelites would come

  738. and do ceremonial

  739. practices to

  740. approach God,

  741. we come and

  742. prepare our hearts

  743. to approach Him

  744. in worship today.

  745. And just as

  746. Israelites would

  747. get their house

  748. together and

  749. clean up and

  750. make sure they're

  751. not doing the

  752. work they would

  753. need to do

  754. every day,

  755. we prepare our

  756. normal everyday

  757. affairs and our

  758. work so that we

  759. can spend this day

  760. in worship to

  761. our God.

  762. The day is not

  763. about what we

  764. don't do,

  765. but it's a day

  766. where we occupy

  767. ourselves with our

  768. King of Kings

  769. and our Lord

  770. of Lords,

  771. and our

  772. triune God,

  773. the Father,

  774. Son,

  775. and the Spirit.

  776. I don't have

  777. much time to

  778. provide a lot

  779. of practical

  780. examples for

  781. how this is

  782. done.

  783. I'd be happy

  784. to give some

  785. areas that I

  786. think would be

  787. really helpful

  788. if you want

  789. to talk.

  790. But another

  791. suggestion I

  792. have is Nathan

  793. preached a

  794. three-part

  795. series on this

  796. subject in

  797. 2018.

  798. And if you

  799. go to CFC's

  800. website,

  801. scroll all the

  802. way down to

  803. the bottom

  804. and go to

  805. sermons,

  806. he has a

  807. series on

  808. Exodus 19,

  809. and 20.

  810. If you go to

  811. those sermons,

  812. you can find

  813. them there,

  814. and he gives

  815. so many great

  816. practical observations

  817. that we can do

  818. to help prepare

  819. and set this

  820. day apart.

  821. Also,

  822. the Puritans

  823. have written

  824. some great

  825. material on

  826. practicing the

  827. Sabbath well.

  828. So I want to

  829. give you a couple

  830. quotes on how

  831. they describe

  832. preparing for

  833. this day.

  834. Richard Baxter

  835. calls the

  836. Lord's Day

  837. a day for

  838. heart work.

  839. For the

  840. Puritans,

  841. the battle

  842. for our

  843. Lord's Day

  844. is won or

  845. lost on the

  846. foregoing

  847. Saturday night,

  848. when time

  849. should be set

  850. aside for

  851. self-examination,

  852. confession,

  853. and prayer for

  854. the coming

  855. day.

  856. George

  857. Swinnick

  858. says,

  859. if thou

  860. wouldst leave

  861. thy heart

  862. with God

  863. on Saturday

  864. night,

  865. thou

  866. shouldst find

  867. it with

  868. him in

  869. the Lord's

  870. Day morning.

  871. Richard Baxter

  872. says,

  873. go seasonably

  874. to bed,

  875. that you

  876. may not

  877. be sleepy

  878. on the

  879. Lord's

  880. Day.

  881. Number two

  882. of the

  883. sub-points,

  884. observation.

  885. In keeping

  886. the Lord's

  887. Day holy,

  888. we observe

  889. a holy rest

  890. from everyday

  891. affairs and

  892. secular

  893. employment.

  894. Instead of

  895. focusing on

  896. everyday affairs

  897. and secular

  898. employment,

  899. we are

  900. resting in

  901. the finished

  902. work of

  903. Christ and

  904. filling this

  905. whole day

  906. with worship

  907. of God.

  908. This was

  909. the central

  910. part of the

  911. Lord's

  912. Day is

  913. the gathering

  914. of the

  915. saints for

  916. corporate

  917. worship.

  918. We see

  919. this in

  920. Acts 27

  921. and in

  922. 1 Corinthians

  923. 16,

  924. 1-2.

  925. Instead of

  926. keeping the

  927. Sabbath on

  928. Saturday,

  929. the saints

  930. after the

  931. resurrection

  932. of Christ

  933. would gather

  934. on the

  935. first day

  936. of the

  937. week,

  938. called

  939. the

  940. Lord's

  941. Day,

  942. to

  943. worship

  944. God.

  945. Scripture

  946. testifies to

  947. this change

  948. and church

  949. history

  950. authenticates

  951. this change.

  952. The purpose

  953. for corporate

  954. gathering of

  955. the saints

  956. is to

  957. worship

  958. our

  959. sovereign

  960. king.

  961. 1 Timothy

  962. 3-16

  963. calls the

  964. gathering of

  965. the church

  966. the household

  967. of God.

  968. Paul calls

  969. this gathering

  970. the church

  971. of the living

  972. God.

  973. In Matthew

    Matthew 18:15–20

  974. 18,

  975. verses 15-20,

  976. Jesus explains how to

  977. confront sin in the

  978. church,

  979. and if necessary,

  980. how to apply church

  981. discipline.

  982. But in verse 20

  983. of Matthew 18,

  984. it says,

  985. it is in the

  986. church of the

  987. living God,

  988. his household,

  989. that in a

  990. special way,

  991. his presence

  992. is here.

  993. When Paul

  994. exhorts Timothy

  995. to preach the

  996. word in 2

  997. Timothy 4,

  998. he gives a

  999. severe warning.

  1000. He says,

  1001. I charge you

  1002. in the

  1003. presence of

  1004. God,

  1005. who is the

  1006. judge of

  1007. the living

  1008. and the

  1009. dead,

  1010. by his

  1011. appearing in

  1012. kingdom,

  1013. preach the

  1014. word.

  1015. the presence

  1016. of God

  1017. is with

  1018. his people

  1019. in a special

  1020. way on the

  1021. Lord's Day,

  1022. in the

  1023. gathering of

  1024. the saints

  1025. as the

  1026. church.

  1027. And when the

  1028. preacher goes

  1029. before the

  1030. pulpit,

  1031. he is under

  1032. solemn oath,

  1033. a solemn

  1034. pledge to

  1035. preach God's

  1036. word and

  1037. nothing else.

  1038. And it is

  1039. this word

  1040. preached that

  1041. we see in

  1042. 2 Timothy 3

  1043. that matures

  1044. the church,

  1045. and it is

  1046. this word

  1047. preached we

  1048. see in 1

  1049. Timothy that

  1050. makes the

  1051. people holy.

  1052. The people

  1053. of God

  1054. experience

  1055. God in

  1056. the

  1057. preaching

  1058. of his

  1059. word.

  1060. So,

  1061. brothers and

  1062. sisters,

  1063. the gathering

  1064. of our

  1065. church on

  1066. a Sunday

  1067. morning is

  1068. not a

  1069. social

  1070. endeavor.

  1071. We come

  1072. together to

  1073. worship the

  1074. living God.

  1075. We come

  1076. to praise

  1077. him and

  1078. to hear

  1079. his word

  1080. brought forth

  1081. to bear

  1082. on our

  1083. lives.

  1084. When we

  1085. come to

  1086. the gathering

  1087. of the

  1088. saints,

  1089. we are

  1090. coming for

  1091. the God

  1092. who is

  1093. the blessed

  1094. and only

  1095. sovereign,

  1096. the King

  1097. of kings,

  1098. and the

  1099. Lord of

  1100. lords.

  1101. So,

  1102. as we

  1103. consider

  1104. the

  1105. Lord's

  1106. day,

  1107. and how

  1108. to

  1109. steward

  1110. this

  1111. day

  1112. for

  1113. his

  1114. glory

  1115. and

  1116. our

  1117. good,

  1118. we need

  1119. to set

  1120. this day,

  1121. especially this

  1122. gathering that

  1123. we're in,

  1124. as holy,

  1125. as a sacred

  1126. day and a

  1127. sacred time.

  1128. If possible,

  1129. the gathering of

  1130. the church should

  1131. not be missed

  1132. because it is the

  1133. household of God

  1134. gathered,

  1135. and the living God

  1136. is especially

  1137. present here.

  1138. the Puritans,

  1139. when they talked

  1140. about going

  1141. to church,

  1142. they didn't say

  1143. we're going to

  1144. church,

  1145. they would say

  1146. we're going

  1147. to sermon,

  1148. because they're

  1149. going to hear

  1150. the word of

  1151. God proclaimed,

  1152. brought to

  1153. bear,

  1154. so that it

  1155. would change

  1156. them,

  1157. and not only

  1158. them,

  1159. that it would

  1160. change their

  1161. lives.

  1162. So,

  1163. after that,

  1164. the fathers

  1165. would then

  1166. go home,

  1167. and they would

  1168. teach their

  1169. kids from

  1170. the oldest

  1171. to the youngest

  1172. the sermon,

  1173. so that the

  1174. kids would

  1175. know the word,

  1176. it would be

  1177. in their hearts,

  1178. and Lord willing,

  1179. they would grow

  1180. into it,

  1181. and it would

  1182. change them.

  1183. The gathering

  1184. of the saints

  1185. for us is a

  1186. time for us

  1187. to rejoice.

  1188. It's a delight,

  1189. it's a feast,

  1190. where we come

  1191. and hear about

  1192. the proclamation

  1193. of Jesus Christ,

  1194. and where we

  1195. rest in his

  1196. finished work,

  1197. and where we

  1198. look forward

  1199. to the day

  1200. approaching,

  1201. where we have

  1202. eternal rest.

  1203. While the

  1204. primacy of our

  1205. gathering is to

  1206. worship our

  1207. triune God,

  1208. there is an

  1209. important and

  1210. organic component

  1211. that scripture

  1212. stresses,

  1213. in the gathering

  1214. of the church,

  1215. believers are

  1216. covenanted

  1217. together for

  1218. Christian practice.

  1219. Hebrews 10,

  1220. 24-25 says,

  1221. and let us

  1222. consider how to

  1223. stir up one

  1224. another to love

  1225. and good works,

  1226. not neglecting to

  1227. meet together,

  1228. as is the habit

  1229. of some,

  1230. but encouraging

  1231. one another,

  1232. and all the more

  1233. as you see the

  1234. day drawing near.

  1235. Our gathering

  1236. together is to

  1237. worship Yahweh,

  1238. and the organic

  1239. means that we

  1240. come together

  1241. is that we

  1242. come together

  1243. to minister to

  1244. one another,

  1245. to love and

  1246. to stir in

  1247. good works.

  1248. The Puritans

  1249. call this every

  1250. limb, every

  1251. member ministry.

  1252. J.I. Packer

  1253. describes it this

  1254. way,

  1255. the New Testament

  1256. picture,

  1257. the New Testament

  1258. picture is the

  1259. local church as a

  1260. body in which

  1261. every member,

  1262. that is literally

  1263. every limb,

  1264. has its own

  1265. part to play in

  1266. advancing the

  1267. welfare and growth

  1268. as a whole.

  1269. 1 Peter 4,

  1270. 10-11 calls us

  1271. to steward God's

  1272. grace given to

  1273. us.

  1274. The way in which

  1275. we steward God's

  1276. grace is to use

  1277. our giftings to

  1278. serve his body.

  1279. When we come

  1280. together, we are

  1281. called to serve

  1282. one another by

  1283. stirring one another

  1284. in love and

  1285. helping each other

  1286. become more

  1287. heavenward.

  1288. So be encouraged

  1289. by 1 Peter 4,

  1290. 10-11.

  1291. As each has

  1292. received a gift,

  1293. use it to serve

  1294. one another as

  1295. good stewards of

  1296. God's varied grace.

  1297. Whoever speaks as

  1298. one who speaks

  1299. oracles of God,

  1300. whoever serves as

  1301. one who serves by

  1302. the strength that

  1303. God supplies, in

  1304. order that in

  1305. everything God may

  1306. be glorified through

  1307. Jesus Christ, to

  1308. him belong glory and

  1309. dominion forever and

  1310. ever.

  1311. Amen.

  1312. The Lord's Day

  1313. gathering includes

  1314. the gathering of the

  1315. church as a central

  1316. day and it also

  1317. includes how we

  1318. spend the rest of

  1319. our day.

  1320. So the central part

  1321. of our day is

  1322. coming together

  1323. as a church,

  1324. as the household

  1325. of God,

  1326. as the temple

  1327. and as the body

  1328. of Christ.

  1329. But it's also

  1330. important how we

  1331. spend the rest of

  1332. our day.

  1333. And that's where we

  1334. talk about the

  1335. Sabbath keeping,

1336. is that the rest of

  1337. our day should be

  1338. spent in ways that

  1339. encourage and provoke

  1340. worship of God

  1341. and rest in Christ.

  1342. J.I.

  1343. Packer says

  1344. regarding the

  1345. Sabbath keeping,

  1346. Sabbath keeping

  1347. means action,

  1348. not inaction.

  1349. The Lord's Day is

  1350. not a day for

  1351. idleness.

  1352. A Puritanist

  1353. said,

  1354. idleness is a

  1355. sin every day,

  1356. but much more

  1357. on the Lord's

  1358. Day.

  1359. J.I.

  1360. Packer goes on

  1361. to say,

  1362. we are to rest

  1363. from the business

  1364. of our earthly

  1365. calling in order

  1366. to prosecute the

  1367. business of our

  1368. heavenly calling.

  1369. These acts of

  1370. worship can be

  1371. offered through

  1372. hospitality,

  1373. through holy

  1374. conversations,

  1375. through talking

  1376. of the things

  1377. of God.

  1378. This can be done

  1379. through taking a

  1380. nap, going on

  1381. walks, hikes,

  1382. playing in the yard,

  1383. going to the park.

  1384. The intention

  1385. is to live

  1386. in a manner

  1387. that is worshipful

  1388. to God

  1389. and helps your

  1390. family worship

  1391. God.

  1392. On the negative,

  1393. we should avoid

  1394. things that make

  1395. our mind dull

  1396. and idle.

  1397. We should not

  1398. engage in things

  1399. that provoke

  1400. sin in our

  1401. hearts.

  1402. In a great

  1403. article by

  1404. Robert Godfrey

  1405. called

  1406. Revived by

  1407. Sabbath Revival,

  1408. he says,

  1409. as we seek

  1410. to cultivate

  1411. afresh a

  1412. Sabbath keeping

  1413. among us,

  1414. we need to do

  1415. that positively.

  1416. We should not

  1417. in the first

  1418. place ask what

  1419. we may not

  1420. do as a list

  1421. of do and

  1422. don'ts.

  1423. Rather, we

  1424. should ask how

  1425. we can give

  1426. this day to

  1427. God to develop

  1428. our relationship

  1429. with him.

  1430. In answer to

  1431. any question

  1432. about what we

  1433. may do on

  1434. Sunday, we

  1435. should first

  1436. ask if it

  1437. contributes to

  1438. the giving of

  1439. the day to

  1440. the Lord.

  1441. If work or

  1442. recreation distracts

  1443. us from God,

  1444. then it is not

  1445. appropriate to

  1446. the Sabbath.

  1447. We don't need

  1448. a long list of

  1449. approved or

  1450. forbidden activities,

  1451. but we need

  1452. to simply

  1453. ask, does

  1454. this contribute

  1455. to worshiping

  1456. the Lord and

  1457. giving this day

  1458. to the Lord?

  1459. The Sabbath is

  1460. not a day of

  1461. do and don'ts,

  1462. it's a day of

  1463. rest and delight

  1464. in our God.

  1465. Finally, in

  1466. brief,

  1467. contemplation.

  1468. The Sabbath,

  1469. the Lord's day,

  1470. is a day that

  1471. is to be kept

  1472. holy and a day

  1473. of rest until

  1474. we reach our

  1475. final rest.

  1476. Robert Godfrey

  1477. says, we need

  1478. the Sabbath now

  1479. as a foretaste

  1480. of the blessed

  1481. eternal rest

  1482. that Christ

  1483. has won for

  1484. us.

  1485. Our fellowship

  1486. with him in

  1487. public and

  1488. private worship

  1489. on the Lord's

  1490. day is the

  1491. beginning of

  1492. that everlasting

  1493. rest that he

  1494. promises.

  1495. The rest that

  1496. we partake in

  1497. every day in

  1498. Christ, and

  1499. especially on

  1500. the Sabbath

  1501. day, helps

  1502. us anticipate

  1503. the marriage

  1504. supper of

  1505. the Lamb.

  1506. It helps us

  1507. long for the

  1508. day when sin

  1509. will be no

  1510. more, when sin

  1511. will be vanquished

  1512. and we will be

  1513. perfectly arrayed

  1514. in glory.

  1515. Our Sabbath

  1516. rest is a

  1517. longing for a

  1518. greater rest, a

  1519. rest of eternal

  1520. communion with

  1521. our Lord.

  1522. This is a day

  1523. of contemplation

  1524. what is to

  1525. come and

  1526. remind ourselves

  1527. it is far

  1528. better than

  1529. the earthly

  1530. joys that we

  1531. have now.

  1532. This is a day

  1533. to teach our

  1534. children that

  1535. life is

  1536. temporary and

  1537. there is much

  1538. joy in heaven

  1539. to come, that

  1540. we don't live

  1541. for this world

  1542. but we live

  1543. for the world

  1544. to come.

  1545. This is a day

  1546. that we look

  1547. forward and

  1548. rest backwards

  1549. until we

  1550. one day

  1551. rest finally

  1552. forward.

  1553. A lot of us

  1554. parents with

  1555. young kids are

  1556. hearing this

  1557. probably and

  1558. thinking, how

  1559. do I do

  1560. this?

  1561. How can I

  1562. sit down and

  1563. tell my kids

  1564. certain things

  1565. about the

  1566. Lord's Day?

  1567. How can I

  1568. cultivate this

  1569. in my home?

  1570. Because right

  1571. now for a lot

  1572. of us, life

  1573. is crazy with

  1574. littles.

  1575. My suggestion

  1576. is that our

  1577. Sabbath keeping

  1578. looks different

  1579. than older kids

  1580. in the home.

  1581. If we had

  1582. older kids in

  1583. the home,

  1584. there would

  1585. be more

  1586. conversations,

  1587. more investment

  1588. in the growing

  1589. together and

  1590. knowing the

  1591. Lord.

  1592. But for the

  1593. littles, I

  1594. recommend that

  1595. we now develop

  1596. habits and

  1597. practices that

  1598. we can cultivate

  1599. in our home,

  1600. that become

  1601. normal in our

  1602. home and

  1603. regulate our

  1604. lives to the

  1605. sabbatical rhythm.

  1606. And Lord

  1607. willing, as they

  1608. grow up, these

  1609. practices will be

  1610. normal.

  1611. They'll be

  1612. something that

  1613. they look forward

  1614. to and that

  1615. they can delight

  1616. in.

  1617. So in closing,

  1618. the Lord's Day

  1619. is a sacred

  1620. day where God

  1621. alone is

  1622. worshipped.

  1623. We rest from

  1624. our normal

  1625. affairs and

  1626. find solace in

  1627. the finished

  1628. work of

  1629. Christ.

  1630. It is a

  1631. day to be

  1632. kept holy.

  1633. A sabbatical

  1634. life is a

  1635. life of rhythm

  1636. and helps us

  1637. regulate a

  1638. proper worship

  1639. of God.

  1640. Let every

  1641. day be a

  1642. day of rest

  1643. in Christ,

  1644. but let

  1645. especially the

  1646. Lord's Day

  1647. be a day of

  1648. rest and

  1649. feasting with

  1650. your Lord.

  1651. I want to

  1652. leave you with

  1653. a quote from

  1654. Richard Baxter

  1655. in his book

  1656. The Everlasting

  1657. Rest of the

  1658. Saints.

  1659. May the

  1660. living God

  1661. who is the

  1662. portion rest of

  1663. his saints

  1664. make these

  1665. our carnal

  1666. minds so

  1667. spiritual and

  1668. our earthly

  1669. hearts so

  1670. heavenly that

  1671. loving him and

  1672. delighting in

  1673. him may be

  1674. the work of

  1675. our hearts.

  1676. Let us pray

  1677. together.
