  1. Well, so glad to be able to open God's Word with you this morning.

  2. You can get your Bibles out. We'll turn in just a second.

  3. As we begin this morning, I wonder how many of us who have been married

  4. ! Can remember the gifts that you received on that day long ago.

  5. For me, it was about 15 years ago, just two weeks ago.

  6. And I was thinking about it.

  7. The only thing that I can remember that we received as a gift that day

  8. were some blue wedding plates that have no longer survived.

  9. Now, this is funny to think about.

  10. If you go to a birthday party, you can see on the expression of your kid's face

  11. if they were hopeful for a particular gift.

  12. We can see it in their eyes, their expression.

  13. This even happens in our marriages when we are giving gifts on anniversaries.

  14. Some of us have missed the mark, haven't we?

  15. You see, it's often true that the giver and the receiver are on different pages.

  16. But this morning, we are going to consider that God is not like us in giving gifts.

  17. God never once gives bad gifts to His people.

  18. Now, how we make use of those gifts, if they are used towards their intended purpose,

  19. is a helpful way for us to think about what we're discussing this morning,

  20. the biblical idea of stewardship.

  21. This morning, we will give attention, especially to one form of stewardship,

  22. and that's the stewardship of pastors and elders

  23. that have been gifted to each local congregation to lead the body.

  24. Now, if you're newer with us this morning,

  25. you may not know that we have just recently appointed and affirmed new elders in this local body.

  26. Now, it's helpful for us to remember that this is only the beginning for us with these new elders.

  27. See, there are a lifetime of transactions that occur between a pastor and a church member,

  28. those church members to their pastor.

  29. So that's our goal this morning, as we're going to open God's Word in just a second,

  30. to consider and to prayerfully ask the Lord,

  31. is there room for me to grow in embracing the gift of elders that God has given to this body?

  32. So let's do that.

  33. We're going to pray this morning, and we will open in just a second to our first text.

  34. So let's pray.

  35. Father, we, today, this morning, recognize that it is by Your Word that You lead us.

  36. Lord, Your Word, by Your Holy Spirit, brings new light to our lives.

  37. There are new ways that the Gospel is intended to transform us,

  38. to increase our joy, to increase our longing for the day that You will come back.

  39. And so we pray this morning we would do that.

  40. Lord, would You give us humble hearts that are no longer blinded to some of the areas that we fall short.

  41. And Lord, we thank You that we can do this as sons and daughters,

  42. not under condemnation if we put our trust in Christ,

  43. but Lord with joyful thanksgiving.

  44. So would You accomplish that and more as we spend our time together in Christ's name. Amen.

  45. Now there's a few reasons that we don't normally think much about stewarding our elders and other leaders within the church.

  46. We don't normally assume that elders and pastors in our life belong in the same category

  47. that something like a checkbook or a calendar do.

  48. We don't have a system of evaluating whether or not we are using them correctly,

  49. only a system in our minds of evaluating how they serve us.

  50. So sometimes we forget our responsibility.

  51. We also are more familiar with the biblical qualifications and calling that we see across Scripture.

  52. So many of us are familiar with the qualifications from 1 Timothy 3, 1 Peter 5, or Titus 1.

  53. These qualifications are essential for the health and proper care of the body.

  54. But there's even more that should be considered as a congregation.

  55. So we're going to turn to a couple of different passages this morning.

  56. But let me first give you the outline for what we will be looking at this morning.

  57. So the very first point that we will be covering is actually a question.

  58. And the question is, why does God give the church elders and leaders?

  59. And we'll look at Ephesians 4 to answer that question.

  60. We'll also look at three other points from Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  61. These points, how we steward our elders and pastors, are the following.

  62. Number one, by considering and imitating.

  63. Number two, by obeying and submitting.

  64. And by number three, by pursuing the joy of our elders.

  65. So please turn with me first to Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  66. Although most of our time will be in the book of Hebrews, it's helpful to start here.

  67. And the reason is because this chapter, really, this section of verses helps to lay the foundation and the groundwork for how to understand why God gives qualified men to local congregations.

  68. So let's read Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  69. We'll start in verse 4.

  70. There is one body and one spirit.

  71. Just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call.

  72. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

  73. Who is over all and through all and in all.

  74. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  75. Therefore, it says,

  76. When he ascended on high, he led a host of captives and he gave gifts to men.

  77. In saying he ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth.

  78. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens that he might fill all things.

  79. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  80. for building up the body of Christ.

  81. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God to mature manhood.

  82. To the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  83. As we head towards understanding how we are called to embrace the gift of leadership in the body,

  84. we first want to understand why elders and leaders are given to the church.

  85. So first consider with me that this is not a man-made idea.

  86. Notice in our text who is the primary actor, the origin, and the one who is actively setting his course to achieve a particular goal.

  87. Verse 7 says,

  88. But grace was given to each one of us, and it was according to the measure of whose gift?

  89. Of Christ's gifts.

  90. At this point, we don't exactly know what is being given, but we can see that the one responsible is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  91. Because the gifts belong to him.

  92. And he is given from his own heart, and what we see is from his grace.

  93. This means that Jesus is not being compelled and he's not being forced.

  94. But this giving of gifts comes from his own heart.

  95. But notice also with me, what is the occasion that these gifts are given to?

  96. So we tend to think of giving out gifts on special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or other reasons to celebrate.

  97. But this particular celebration, it comes in response to what the text describes as an ascension and a descension.

  98. Do you see that in verse 9 and verse 10?

  99. Notice it says,

  100. He descended into the lower regions, the earth.

  101. Now, kids, if you aren't familiar with what the word descension is,

  102. Think of somebody coming down from a position of great power, like a king.

  103. And they come down to make themselves known to you.

  104. Now, that's a powerful picture.

  105. And that's what Jesus has done.

  106. So Jesus has descended in history from his place of glory to become clothed in flesh, like you and I,

  107. In order that he might ascend and go back.

  108. Back to glory with his Father.

  109. So what we have again here is we have the occasion of a celebration.

  110. A celebration of descension and ascension.

  111. And Jesus is celebrating the conquering of sin and death that he accomplished on the cross.

  112. Now, as he accomplishes this great work,

  113. What Jesus does is he shares the spoils with his people.

  114. See, it's unlike a birthday party that you go to,

  115. Where we give gifts to the person being celebrated here.

  116. What we see is Jesus gives gifts to his body through his accomplishment.

  117. Jesus has won a triumphant victory.

  118. And we are the ones who receive the benefit.

  119. You're familiar with this line.

  120. It says,

  121. Why should I gain from his reward?

  122. I cannot give an answer.

  123. But this I know with all my heart,

  124. His wounds have paid my ransom.

  125. We receive gifts from what he's done for us.

  126. Now, we're getting closer to answering this question

  127. of why does God give pastors and elders?

  128. We've seen that Jesus gives gifts to his people.

  129. And he does it to further enjoy,

  130. to further satisfy the things that he has accomplished for us.

  131. And we also see that Jesus,

  132. when he gives gifts in this text,

  133. he's giving to two different categories of people.

  134. If you look at verse 7,

  135. he is giving specific gifts.

  136. And it says,

  137. For building up the entire body.

  138. Oh, I'm sorry.

  139. Let me back up.

  140. We see that in verse 7,

  141. he's giving gifts to specific people.

  142. But in verse 12,

  143. he is giving gifts to the entire body of the church,

  144. the collective group of people

  145. that assembles together to worship the Lord.

  146. Now, look again with me at verse 11 through 13.

  147. It says,

  148. He gave apostles and prophets,

  149. evangelists, shepherds, and teachers

  150. to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  151. for building up the body of Christ,

  152. until we all attain to the unity of the faith

  153. and of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  154. to mature manhood,

  155. to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  156. See, our corporate gifts are the leaders

  157. that God has put amongst us.

  158. They are the ones we are called to steward.

  159. They have been specifically created and designed and placed

  160. within each local congregation

  161. so that the body can progressively enjoy the full bounty

  162. of the soul-satisfying work of the gospel.

  163. Now, many churches don't enjoy the benefit

  164. of seeing those called and appointed

  165. as elders and leaders in their congregation.

  166. Perhaps you grew up in one of these churches as well.

  167. You may have picked up habits from these earlier days

  168. and become accustomed to viewing pastors

  169. only on a horizontal level.

  170. See, the danger that we walk into when we do this

  171. is we can actually only start relating to our pastors

  172. in a form of compliance to their leadership,

  173. perhaps tolerance for their ministry,

  174. but worse, what can happen is disdain and resistance

  175. can creep in towards authority,

  176. and this can have great consequences on the church.

  177. So I ask you, brothers and sisters,

  178. do you receive your pastors and elders

  179. as gifts that we see from Ephesians chapter 4?

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  180. These are for your good,

  181. and their placement is a primary means of grace

  182. so that we can know Christ more.

  183. Now we're going to switch,

  184. and you can flip over to Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  185. We're going to read through a short section here,

  186. but before we get that,

  187. those of you who may be a little bit unfamiliar

  188. with the book of Hebrews,

  189. it's helpful to remember

  190. that the author of Hebrews

  191. spends a lot of his time laboring

  192. to challenge, exhort,

  193. and uphold the superior hope of the gospel

  194. as the end that the Old Testament anticipates.

  195. So the sacrificial system of the Old Testament

  196. has been replaced

  197. by the once and for all sacrifice

  198. of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  199. But the book of Hebrews

  200. doesn't just hold out the hope of Christ.

  201. It also warns us

  202. about drifting in our own hearts.

  203. So chapter 2, verse 1 says,

  204. Therefore we must pay closer attention

  205. to what we have heard

  206. lest we drift away from it.

  207. Chapter 4 says,

  208. Let us therefore strive to enter the rest

  209. so that no one may fall

  210. by the same sort of disobedience.

  211. In Hebrews 10,

  212. For if we go on sinning deliberately,

  213. after receiving the knowledge of the truth,

  214. there no longer remains

  215. a sacrifice for sins,

  216. but a fearful expectation of judgment.

  217. These sober reminders

  218. are attention worthy.

  219. They call us to shackle

  220. the hidden areas of self-confidence

  221. and to root out any drifting of the heart

  222. that exists within us.

  223. The closing words of Hebrews

  224. then are intended to protect us,

  225. to point us towards

  226. God's preserving grace

  227. that we receive

  228. through conduits

  229. of the Great Shepherd Himself,

  230. namely our leaders.

  231. So point one

  232. is how to embrace biblical leadership

  233. to consider and imitate.

  234. Chapter 13, verse 7,

  235. we read this.

  236. It says,

  237. Remember your leaders,

  238. those who spoke to you

  239. the Word of God,

  240. and consider

  241. the outcome

  242. of their way of life,

  243. and imitate their faith.

  244. There is a progression

  245. within this verse

  246. that's important for us to follow.

  247. The progression begins

  248. with the idea

  249. of first remembering

  250. leaders of the past.

  251. The past tense word spoke

  252. and the focus on the outcome

  253. of their way of life

  254. leads us to assume

  255. that these particular leaders

  256. being referenced

  257. have now gone on

  258. to be with the Lord.

  259. Now, our text alerts us

  260. that the call

  261. to remember our leaders

  262. does not stop

  263. only with admiration

  264. of our leaders.

  265. You see,

  266. the world celebrates

  267. and it memorializes leaders

  268. in an outward way.

  269. But we are called

  270. to a different type

  271. of remembering.

  272. We remember leaders

  273. of the body

  274. with an eye

  275. towards consideration

  276. and imitation.

  277. It says,

  278. consider the outcome

  279. of their way of life

  280. and imitate

  281. their faith.

  282. Now, why would God

  283. call us

  284. to imitate men?

  285. Doesn't that put us

  286. in a position

  287. of vulnerability

  288. to their own failures?

  289. Well, consider

  290. just a few chapters

  291. before.

  292. In the chapter

  293. called the Hall of Faith,

  294. chapter 11,

  295. those mentioned

  296. are extremely flawed men

  297. with flawed resumes.

  298. So, we recall

  299. Moses was a man

  300. who struggled

  301. with anger

  302. such that he

  303. was guilty

  304. of murder.

  305. Now, David

  306. was the same

  307. as well.

  308. He succumbed

  309. to the pleasures

  310. of his flesh

  311. by committing adultery.

  312. in themselves,

  313. these are

  314. ordinary men

  315. and so

  316. are your

  317. elders.

  318. But why

  319. do we remember?

  320. Why does God

  321. call us

  322. to remember

  323. these leaders

  324. of the past?

  325. What is actually

  326. worthy

  327. of being considered

  328. and imitated?

  329. The point

  330. of remembering

  331. our leaders

  332. is found

  333. in the connection

  334. to verse 8.

  335. It says,

  336. Jesus Christ

  337. is the same

  338. yesterday,

  339. today,

  340. and forever.

  341. The verse

  342. is intentionally

  343. positioned

  344. right here

  345. in the context

  346. of imitating

  347. our leaders

  348. because

  349. we remember

  350. in such a way

  351. that we fix

  352. our gaze

  353. not on men,

  354. but on the

  355. faithfulness

  356. of the one

  357. who sustained

  358. them

  359. until the

  360. very end.

  361. See,

  362. Jesus is the one

  363. who gives

  364. pastors

  365. as gifts

  366. to demonstrate

  367. not sufficiency

  368. in men,

  369. but the

  370. sufficiency

  371. of his grace

  372. which works

  373. within them.

  374. We should

  375. expect

  376. a particular

  377. way

  378. that God

  379. will show

  380. us Christ

  381. in the men

  382. that are called

  383. to lead

  384. the church.

  385. So,

  386. how is the

  387. gospel

  388. manifested

  389. in their

  390. public

  391. and in

  392. their

  393. private

  394. lives?

  395. Where do

  396. we witness

  397. their strength

  398. coming from

  399. when their

  400. flesh

  401. is weak

  402. and exposed?

  403. Hebrews 11

    Hebrews 11:13

  404. verse 13

  405. reminds us

  406. of these

  407. leaders.

  408. These all

  409. died in

  410. faith,

  411. not having

  412. received the

  413. things which

  414. were promised,

  415. but having

  416. seen them,

  417. they greeted

  418. them from

  419. afar,

  420. having

  421. acknowledged

  422. that they

  423. were strangers

  424. and exiles

  425. on the

  426. earth.

  427. Now,

  428. these are

  429. the types

  430. of leaders

  431. who bring

  432. great benefit

  433. to the

  434. body of

  435. Christ.

  436. Many

  437. leaders

  438. clothe

  439. themselves

  440. in signs

  441. of external

  442. strength,

  443. but look

  444. to leaders,

  445. imitate

  446. leaders,

  447. and pray

  448. for our

  449. leaders,

  450. that they

  451. would be

  452. the type

  453. of men

  454. who wear

  455. the banner

  456. of Jesus

  457. Christ

  458. yesterday,

  459. today,

  460. and forever.

  461. So,

  462. our flesh,

  463. it's good for

  464. us to think

  465. about,

  466. our flesh

  467. naturally

  468. wants to

  469. resist the

  470. call to

  471. imitate,

  472. to submit,

  473. and to

  474. obey and

  475. follow our

  476. leaders.

  477. leaders.

  478. Now,

  479. at least in

  480. my own

  481. heart,

  482. there are

  483. a couple

  484. reasons why

  485. this happens

  486. so naturally.

  487. The first

  488. is because

  489. individualism

  490. reigns

  491. supreme

  492. in our

  493. country.

  494. We place

  495. value on

  496. thinking

  497. independently,

  498. on being

  499. able to

  500. navigate our

  501. course without

  502. needing help

  503. from outsiders,

  504. and this

  505. can be very

  506. sneaky within

  507. our own

  508. hearts.

  509. What does

  510. it look

  511. like?

  512. Well,

  513. thoughts can

  514. quietly enter

  515. and say

  516. to us,

  517. we would

  518. do things

  519. just a

  520. little

  521. differently.

  522. They don't

  523. exactly see

  524. the things

  525. that we

  526. see.

  527. They might

  528. have a

  529. funny

  530. personality.

  531. And slowly,

  532. our

  533. imitation

  534. turns only

  535. outward towards

  536. observation,

  537. or even

  538. reservation.

  539. Is the

  540. Lord calling

  541. us to

  542. repent in

  543. this area?

  544. Could it

  545. be that

  546. the grace

  547. of receiving

  548. care from

  549. our Father

  550. means to

  551. fight against

  552. the spirit

  553. of individualism

  554. in our own

  555. hearts?

  556. The second

  557. reason is

  558. that our

  559. leaders are

  560. sinful,

  561. as we

  562. well know.

  563. While it's

  564. good to be

  565. discerning about

  566. the direction

  567. that our

  568. leaders will

  569. take,

  570. we can

  571. easily fall

  572. prey to

  573. the schemes

  574. of the evil

  575. one,

  576. which tell

  577. us to

  578. resist their

  579. influence for

  580. our safety.

  581. can you

  582. imagine the

  583. sheep coming

  584. together with

  585. a call to

  586. resist the

  587. care of

  588. their

  589. shepherds?

  590. This is a

  591. very dangerous

  592. point,

  593. place to

  594. be,

  595. church.

  596. You see,

  597. God has

  598. ordained

  599. biblical

  600. standards for

  601. our elders

  602. amongst us.

  603. Paul says,

  604. even if an

  605. angel comes

  606. proclaiming

  607. another gospel,

  608. let him be

  609. a curse.

  610. God gives

  611. our leaders

  612. guidelines.

  613. How we

  614. are to be

  615. influenced

  616. should be

  617. very similar

  618. to the

  619. words of

  620. Paul in

  621. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  622. chapter 11.

  623. It says

  624. this,

  625. follow me,

  626. but follow

  627. me as I

  628. follow Christ.

  629. Our

  630. imitation

  631. is grounded

  632. in Christ.

  633. Point two,

  634. how to

  635. embrace

  636. biblical

  637. leadership

  638. by obeying

  639. and submitting.

  640. So for the

  641. sake of time,

  642. we're not

  643. going to

  644. unpack all

  645. the verses

  646. here in

  647. the next

  648. section of

  649. Hebrews

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  650. chapter 13,

  651. but in

  652. brief fashion,

  653. notice verse

  654. 9 and the

  655. warning that

  656. is mentioned

  657. in this

  658. particular

  659. verse.

  660. One of

  661. the primary

  662. reasons we're

  663. called to

  664. embrace

  665. leaders by

  666. obeying and

  667. submitting to

  668. them is

  669. because there

  670. is no

  671. shortage of

  672. what verse

  673. 9 calls

  674. strange and

  675. diverse

  676. teachings.

  677. Now we

  678. aren't told

  679. precisely what

  680. these teachings

  681. are, but we

  682. do know that

  683. believers are

  684. being threatened

  685. to find false

  686. strength in

  687. some custom

  688. of food

  689. observance.

  690. notice that

  691. the writer

  692. says halfway

  693. through this

  694. verse, it

  695. is good for

  696. the heart to

  697. be strengthened

  698. by grace

  699. rather than

  700. by foods

  701. prepared at

  702. altars.

  703. So pastors

  704. are called

  705. to do

  706. exactly what

  707. we find

  708. here by

  709. the author

  710. of Hebrews.

  711. They warn

  712. us to

  713. protect us

  714. from reaching

  715. for false

  716. strength.

  717. The gospel

  718. is indeed

  719. sufficient, the

  720. elders must

  721. declare, and

  722. that is their

  723. only banner.

  724. Now why is

  725. this important?

  726. It's because we

  727. all reach for

  728. something when

  729. weaknesses are

  730. exposed in our

  731. life.

  732. That is built

  733. within our

  734. fabric.

  735. I am weak,

  736. I need

  737. strength.

  738. I'm not

  739. content with my

  740. circumstances,

  741. what hope can

  742. I find in

  743. other circumstances

  744. where I've

  745. fallen down,

  746. what will

  747. lift me up?

  748. I see this

  749. example in my

  750. beautiful daughter

  751. Savannah that

  752. many of you

  753. know.

  754. So she's not

  755. quite comfortable

  756. in a pool

  757. all by herself.

  758. And while she

  759. reaches for her

  760. mom continually

  761. around the

  762. house, it can

  763. be hard for me

  764. to even capture

  765. a moment of

  766. her attention.

  767. But when we

  768. head over to

  769. the pool,

  770. there's only

  771. one person

  772. that she

  773. wants to be

  774. with.

  775. See, she

  776. reaches for

  777. the strongest

  778. thing that

  779. she can when

  780. her weakness

  781. is exposed.

  782. And thankfully,

  783. that's her

  784. dad.

  785. Now, us

  786. elders are

  787. called to

  788. do just like

  789. I do for

  790. Savannah.

  791. I do not

  792. let her reach

  793. for her

  794. brothers and

  795. her sisters.

  796. The pool

  797. noodle that

  798. looks really

  799. easy to

  800. hang on is

  801. just a trap.

  802. And that is

  803. what elders

  804. do for the

  805. congregation.

  806. When we

  807. are weak

  808. only, Christ

  809. is sufficient

  810. to sustain

  811. us until

  812. the end.

  813. Now, God's

  814. under-shepherds

  815. have this

  816. glorious privilege

  817. of upholding

  818. the worth

  819. of Jesus.

  820. But it

  821. also says

  822. in verse

  823. 17,

  824. obey your

  825. leaders and

  826. submit to

  827. them, for

  828. they are

  829. keeping watch

  830. over your

  831. souls as

  832. those who

  833. will give

  834. an account.

  835. So be

  836. encouraged,

  837. church.

  838. Our

  839. obedience and

  840. our submission

  841. to elders

  842. is grounded

  843. in their

  844. accountability

  845. ability before

  846. God Almighty.

  847. They are

  848. only stewards

  849. themselves,

  850. and God

  851. is presiding

  852. over their

  853. care for

  854. you.

  855. Oh, how

  856. the Lord

  857. loves you.

  858. Having not

  859. spared his

  860. son, he

  861. can be

  862. trusted with

  863. the ones that

  864. he has put in

  865. charge of

  866. your care.

  867. our last

  868. point this

  869. morning is

  870. how to

  871. embrace

  872. biblical

  873. leadership

  874. by pursuing

  875. the joy

  876. of our

  877. leaders.

  878. And this

  879. also comes

  880. from verse

  881. 17.

  882. It says

  883. this,

  884. obey your

  885. leaders and

  886. submit to

  887. them, for

  888. they are

  889. keeping watch

  890. over your

  891. souls as

  892. those who

  893. will give

  894. an account,

  895. but let

  896. them do

  897. this with

  898. joy and

  899. not with

  900. groaning,

  901. because that

  902. would be of

  903. no advantage

  904. to you.

  905. So there

  906. are two

  907. goals in

  908. mind here

  909. with this

  910. final instruction,

  911. and the

  912. first of

  913. which is

  914. to pursue

  915. the joy

  916. of your

  917. pastors.

  918. Let them

  919. do this

  920. with joy.

  921. This is a

  922. call,

  923. church,

  924. to us,

  925. to you,

  926. to care

  927. specifically

  928. for the

  929. hearts of

  930. your leaders.

  931. You see,

  932. our groanings,

  933. our complaints,

  934. our

  935. dissatisfaction

  936. has the

  937. potential to

  938. deplete the

  939. heart of

  940. those who

  941. care for

  942. us.

  943. So fill

  944. them with

  945. joy,

  946. church.

  947. Refuel

  948. and replenish

  949. and guard

  950. your words

  951. against

  952. groaning.

  953. Measure

  954. the ambition

  955. of your

  956. heart by

  957. setting your

  958. course for

  959. joy in

  960. their ministry.

  961. And secondly,

  962. remember that

  963. this is also

  964. designed for

  965. your good.

  966. Verse 17

  967. reminds us

  968. that we

  969. are advantaged.

  970. We are best

  971. cared for.

  972. we are best

  973. stewards

  974. ourselves

  975. when we

  976. are pursuing

  977. their joy.

  978. Now let me

  979. say this,

  980. I am brand

  981. new to the

  982. role of

  983. being an

  984. elder,

  985. as you

  986. know,

  987. but from

  988. talking to

  989. those who

  990. have labored

  991. faithfully

  992. year after

  993. year at

  994. Christ's

  995. family,

  996. they find

  997. it a joy

  998. to serve

  999. you because

  1000. you do

  1001. these things

  1002. very well.

  1003. You

  1004. increase

  1005. our joy

  1006. in Christ

  1007. by the

  1008. way that

  1009. you live,

  1010. by the

  1011. way that

  1012. you are

  1013. gracious

  1014. with our

  1015. weaknesses,

  1016. and by

  1017. your desire

  1018. to be

  1019. led

  1020. towards

  1021. streams

  1022. of living

  1023. waters.

  1024. But as

  1025. we strive

  1026. to do

  1027. this even

  1028. more,

  1029. there are

  1030. just a

  1031. few

  1032. practical

  1033. steps

  1034. for us

  1035. to

  1036. consider.

  1037. So four

  1038. steps for

  1039. our

  1040. consideration.

  1041. The first,

  1042. you don't

  1043. have to

  1044. turn there,

  1045. comes from

  1046. 3 John

    3 John 1:4

  1047. chapter 1

  1048. verse 4.

  1049. It says

  1050. this,

  1051. I have

  1052. no greater

  1053. joy

  1054. than to

  1055. hear that

  1056. my

  1057. children

  1058. are

  1059. walking

  1060. in the

  1061. truth.

  1062. The first

  1063. step is

  1064. to walk

  1065. in the

  1066. truth.

  1067. What is

  1068. your compass

  1069. church that

  1070. navigates

  1071. your

  1072. relationship

  1073. with your

  1074. elders?

  1075. Do your

  1076. engagement

  1077. with your

  1078. pastors

  1079. demonstrate

  1080. that you

  1081. are hungry

  1082. for intimacy

  1083. with Christ?

  1084. Does

  1085. truth

  1086. preside

  1087. over

  1088. preference?

  1089. step

  1090. number

  1091. two,

  1092. pray.

  1093. Thessalonians

  1094. 3

  1095. verse 1

  1096. says this,

  1097. finally

  1098. brothers,

  1099. pray for

  1100. us that

  1101. the word

  1102. of the

  1103. Lord may

  1104. speed

  1105. ahead

  1106. and be

  1107. honored

  1108. and that

  1109. we may

  1110. be delivered

  1111. from wicked

  1112. and from

  1113. evil

  1114. men.

  1115. Are

  1116. you

  1117. praying

  1118. for your

  1119. pastors?

  1120. A couple

  1121. specific ways,

  1122. pray that

  1123. God would

  1124. fuel us,

  1125. that we

  1126. ourselves

  1127. would hunger

  1128. for more

  1129. of Christ.

  1130. Pray that

  1131. God would

  1132. protect us

  1133. from the

  1134. schemes of

  1135. the evil

  1136. one that

  1137. are many

  1138. times directed

  1139. precisely

  1140. at your

  1141. elders.

  1142. And pray

  1143. for grace

  1144. within our

  1145. families,

  1146. that our

  1147. wives and

  1148. that our

  1149. children would

  1150. be healthy

  1151. and established

  1152. in the truth

  1153. of the

  1154. gospel.

  1155. Number

  1156. three,

  1157. provide.

  1158. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:17

  1159. chapter 5

  1160. verse 17

  1161. says,

  1162. let the

  1163. elders who

  1164. rule well

  1165. be considered

  1166. worthy of

  1167. double

  1168. honor,

  1169. especially

  1170. those who

  1171. labor

  1172. in preaching

  1173. and in

  1174. teaching.

  1175. This is a

  1176. great verse

  1177. that probably

  1178. deserves more

  1179. time than

  1180. we are giving

  1181. it this

  1182. morning.

  1183. But consider

  1184. what is this

  1185. verse calling

  1186. us to?

  1187. Those who

  1188. labor in

  1189. teaching and

  1190. preaching are

  1191. those who

  1192. make their

  1193. living by

  1194. proclaiming

  1195. the gospel.

  1196. We are

  1197. privileged to

  1198. have two

  1199. men who

  1200. are currently

  1201. doing that

  1202. in our

  1203. body.

  1204. What a

  1205. gift to

  1206. excel in

  1207. providing for

  1208. these men.

  1209. See, we

  1210. can be

  1211. intentional and

  1212. do our

  1213. best to

  1214. remove any

  1215. obstacles of

  1216. provision that

  1217. a full-time

  1218. pastor may

  1219. feel.

  1220. We want

  1221. them to be

  1222. freed from

  1223. the concerns

  1224. of outside

  1225. work.

  1226. By God's

  1227. grace, our

  1228. pastors do

  1229. not seek

  1230. riches,

  1231. marriages, but

  1232. they do

  1233. have families,

  1234. they do

  1235. have weddings

  1236. of the future

  1237. to prepare

  1238. for, and

  1239. they do

  1240. have

  1241. retirements

  1242. that one

  1243. day they

  1244. need just

  1245. like we

  1246. do.

  1247. Number four,

  1248. clothe

  1249. yourselves in

  1250. humility.

  1251. First Peter

  1252. chapter five

  1253. says this,

  1254. likewise,

  1255. sorry,

  1256. verse five,

  1257. likewise you

  1258. who are

  1259. younger.

  1260. Be subject

  1261. to the

  1262. elders.

  1263. Clothe

  1264. yourselves,

  1265. all of you,

  1266. with humility

  1267. toward one

  1268. another.

  1269. For God

  1270. opposes the

  1271. proud, but

  1272. he gives

  1273. grace to

  1274. the humble.

  1275. Are you

  1276. humble in

  1277. the way

  1278. that you

  1279. speak of

  1280. things that

  1281. you see

  1282. differently?

  1283. Are you

  1284. inclined to

  1285. be persuaded

  1286. by the

  1287. direction and

  1288. the encouragement

  1289. that you

  1290. receive?

  1291. Are you

  1292. quicker to

  1293. share a

  1294. different

  1295. opinion or

  1296. way of

  1297. looking at

  1298. things?

  1299. One last

  1300. question,

  1301. how would

  1302. your elders

  1303. feel if

  1304. they heard

  1305. the way

  1306. that was

  1307. spoken of

  1308. them in

  1309. private?

  1310. Church,

  1311. remember,

  1312. there are

  1313. many other

  1314. ways to

  1315. care for

  1316. our elders.

  1317. But the

  1318. way as

  1319. stewards of

  1320. a great

  1321. gift, we

  1322. are to

  1323. honor and

  1324. pursue the

  1325. joy of

  1326. our pastors

  1327. is also to

  1328. pursue the

  1329. joy that

  1330. we find in

  1331. Christ

  1332. ourselves.

  1333. There are

  1334. many other

  1335. ways that

  1336. we can

  1337. consider how

  1338. to walk in

  1339. faithfulness

  1340. with our

  1341. elders.

  1342. But let

  1343. me close

  1344. with this

  1345. encouragement

  1346. from 1

  1347. Peter 3.

  1348. It says

  1349. this,

  1350. finally,

  1351. all of

  1352. you have

  1353. unity of

  1354. mind,

  1355. sympathy,

  1356. brotherly

  1357. love,

  1358. and a

  1359. tender heart,

  1360. and a

  1361. humble mind.

  1362. I am

  1363. confident you

  1364. will continue,

  1365. church, to

  1366. do this

  1367. because you

  1368. know what

  1369. good gifts

  1370. our Father

  1371. gives.

  1372. and you

  1373. know that

  1374. your ultimate

  1375. trust is not

  1376. in men,

  1377. but it is

  1378. in the one

  1379. who upholds

  1380. these men

  1381. for your

  1382. good and

  1383. for his

  1384. great glory.

  1385. We love

  1386. you, church.

  1387. Let's pray

  1388. together.

  1389. Amen.
