  1. Let me invite you to take your copy of God's Word and turn to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  2. It's very good to be back with you this morning.

  3. I forgot about how many children this church has.

  4. I'm glad for each and every one of them.

  5. We've been working verse by verse through the book of Romans as I've had the occasion to preach.

  6. And the plan for this week was Romans chapter 4 verses 1 through 12.

    Romans 4:1–12

  7. When the bulletins were produced on Thursday, folded and stapled very carefully by yours truly, this was the plan.

  8. But then I began to write the introduction to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  9. We've been thinking a lot in these early chapters of the book of Romans about justification by grace alone,

  10. through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  11. I've said to you repeatedly, that's the theme of this letter.

  12. And it begins in Romans chapter 1 and verse 16.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  13. There Paul says he's not ashamed of the gospel, for it's the power of God for salvation to all who believe.

  14. For the righteous shall live by faith.

  15. And it begins to expound upon that.

  16. Why? Why do we need this alien righteousness, this righteousness that comes from God?

  17. And he begins to lay that out for us in verse 18 of chapter 1.

  18. And then he begins to think about and write about the relationship between the gospel and the Jewish people and the Gentile people.

  19. But again, driving this point all along.

  20. Justification comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  21. And I've said to you, I think this is timely for our church, because if we don't get clear the gospel,

  22. if we're not redundantly clear on the gospel, then we're going to get distracted by other things.

  23. And so, as I come to chapter 4, and I'm looking to expound on these first 12 verses,

  24. if you're there now, you may have in your Bible a subheading similar to mine,

  25. Abraham justified by faith.

  26. He's going to go make an Old Testament argument to us about justification coming through faith from Abraham.

  27. And then he makes an argument from the mouth of David.

  28. And I begin to think, why are we still talking about this?

  29. And so I start to write an introduction to set you up for that.

  30. And it's an introduction that became a sermon itself in the process.

  31. I thought yesterday, I really need to do this first, and then we'll get back into Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  32. So, go with me, if you will, to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  33. I want to talk in brief about the five solas of the Protestant Reformation,

  34. and then draw our attention more narrowly to sola scriptura.

  35. The Bible alone is God's final authority.

  36. In Latin, sola scriptura.

  37. And it is on its pages that we learn that we are saved by God's grace alone, sola gratia.

  38. Through faith alone, sola fide.

  39. In Jesus Christ alone, sola Christus.

  40. And this salvation and all things that exist for the glory of God alone.

  41. Soli Deo Gloria.

  42. We are Protestants.

  43. And this is not an insignificant declaration.

  44. More than 500 years ago, the Protestant Reformation began, and we are still protesting.

  45. Not just against Roman Catholicism, but also against any world system that says,

  46. you can be saved by your works.

  47. Which they all do.

  48. That is the mantra of our day.

  49. We are not Protestants in theory or by name only.

  50. It's not a tip of the hat to our history.

  51. A little more than five years ago, the leadership of your church had to stand against our own denomination's campus ministry.

  52. Because they thought it a good idea to partner with the Catholic organization on campus for an evangelistic event.

  53. And we cried, no.

  54. No.

  55. No.

  56. Justification comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  57. Let us not be unclear about this.

  58. Let us not be a people who are distracted by lesser in-house disagreements.

  59. We need to grip tightly to the solas.

  60. For there is much work to be done.

  61. Beloved, the boldest thing you can do is not take to social media to decry or defend

  62. every disparate view.

  63. The boldest thing you can do is preach the good news of Jesus Christ to your children,

  64. to your spouse and other family members, to your neighbors and co-workers,

  65. and to one another.

  66. We are Protestants.

  67. We are Protestants.

  68. And we are at our best when we hold fast to the solas.

  69. We do not innovate.

  70. We hold.

  71. We do not waver.

  72. We hold.

  73. We do not become distracted.

  74. We hold.

  75. We hold.

  76. We hold.

  77. We contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  78. And so you may see, as I begin to write an introduction,

  79. my concern is that you might get bored with the message of justification by grace alone,

  80. through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  81. My concern is that we have in us a desire to be innovative,

  82. to expand and to explore.

  83. And I want to call us this morning to the old ways.

  84. If you want to think of it as boring, go right on ahead.

  85. But the text, back to the text, back to the text, back to the text.

  86. May we never grow tired of hearing the gospel proclaimed.

  87. Now, I want to be clear.

  88. The Protestant Reformation was not the beginning of Christianity.

  89. Christianity.

  90. God has had a people that he has sovereignly rescued from the fall

  91. by a promise that has been fulfilled in Christ.

  92. The truth of God had not been lost to the world to be rediscovered by an Augustinian monk

  93. by the name of Martin Luther in the 16th century.

  94. The truth of God had been preserved by God,

  95. although largely lost to the Western world,

  96. buried in a Latin translation and by Roman Catholic tradition and papal infallibility,

  97. which at very best obscured the truth and at very worst replaced it.

  98. God had long been working among his people in Europe

  99. to ignite the purifying flame of the Protestant Reformation.

  100. A popular analogy goes that God had been stacking the kindling for centuries

  101. and that he used Martin Luther's writing as a spark to ignite the fire

  102. that burned so brightly across Europe to purify the church.

  103. Faithful men, known and unknown, were used of God.

  104. Men like John Wycliffe, who in the 14th century defied Rome

  105. and translated the Bible from Latin into English.

  106. They were all fallible men, but they were men used of God.

  107. Our history traces through redemptive history

  108. by way of the church we see in the book of Acts,

  109. through the Reformers and the Puritans to today.

  110. The events of the Reformation were significant

  111. and we would not exist as a people for God's possession if not for them.

  112. I am not saying that God couldn't have established a church in the Americas

  113. without the Reformation,

  114. but I am saying that God chose to start a church in the Americas

  115. with the Reformation,

  116. and we should want to know our history.

  117. We do not want to be known for what we are against,

  118. but sometimes to be clear about what you are for,

  119. you must state what you are against.

  120. The Protestant Reformation began as an attempt to bring correction

  121. to the Roman Catholic Church,

  122. but upon Rome's rejection of the plain teaching of Scripture,

  123. the Reformers abandoned Rome.

  124. We are Protestants,

  125. and we will protest any teaching,

  126. not just Roman Catholic teaching,

  127. any teaching against justification

  128. by grace alone,

  129. through faith alone,

  130. in Jesus Christ alone.

  131. We must be clear on this.

  132. Luther once said,

  133. the time for silence is past,

  134. and the time to speak has come.

  135. So let's talk just a bit about Martin Luther

  136. before we get into our text today,

  137. and the event that happened on October 31st, 1517,

  138. as well as the events that followed.

  139. Martin Luther was training to be a lawyer,

  140. and he was deeply troubled by the status of his soul.

  141. In a lightning storm,

  142. ironically praying to Saint Anne,

  143. Luther promised that if he survived the storm,

  144. he would become a monk.

  145. It was seen as the highest devotion to God in his day.

  146. Well, he did survive the storm,

  147. and he kept his promise.

  148. He became an Augustinian monk.

  149. Still troubled by the state of his soul,

  150. he was tasked with translating the book of Romans,

  151. and not far into chapter 1,

  152. he came to verse 17,

  153. and the phrase,

  154. the righteous shall live by faith.

  155. See, the trouble of his soul was that he thought,

  156. I can never do enough.

  157. I am not measuring up to God's law,

  158. and he was right about this.

  159. But then he saw the good news,

  160. that the righteous shall live by faith.

  161. On October 31st of 1517,

  162. Luther nailed a document that we know as the 95 Theses

  163. to the Wittenberg church door,

  164. which outlined 95 reasons

  165. that the selling of indulgences was not biblical.

  166. You see, the Roman Catholic Church had constructed,

  167. as all worldly moral systems do,

  168. a system of works-based salvation,

  169. do good and good will follow.

  170. And they had monetized it

  171. in order to build a massive building.

  172. At the end of February

  173. to the beginning of March of 1518,

  174. the 95 Theses were translated into German

  175. without Luther's permission

  176. by a printer and widely distributed.

  177. A lot of people want to give Luther all the credit.

  178. He did write the document,

  179. but didn't intend for it to be widely distributed.

  180. Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church

  181. in January of 1521,

  182. and he was then summoned to the Diet of Worms

  183. in April 17th of 1521,

  184. where he was asked the questions,

  185. Do you acknowledge the authorship of books

  186. that had been brought to the Diet

  187. and bore your name?

  188. And will you stand by them

  189. or retract anything in them?

  190. Luther asked for 24 hours

  191. to consider his response,

  192. and it was at the end of this 24-hour period

  193. on April 18th of 1521

  194. where he said the following famous words,

  195. Unless I am convinced

  196. by the testimony of Scripture

  197. or by clear reason,

  198. for I trust neither Pope nor Council alone,

  199. since it is well known

  200. that they have often erred

  201. and contradicted themselves,

  202. I am bound by the Scriptures

  203. I have cited,

  204. for my conscience is captive

  205. to the Word of God.

  206. I cannot and will not recant anything,

  207. since to act against one's conscience

  208. is neither safe nor right.

  209. I cannot do otherwise.

  210. Here I stand.

  211. May God help me.

  212. Martin Luther was declared a heretic

  213. and traitor to the state

  214. and sentenced to death.

  215. But a kidnapping was staged

  216. and he was hidden away in a castle

  217. where he promptly translated

  218. the New Testament

  219. into German

  220. in a matter of months.

  221. Why?

  222. Because he believed

  223. in sola scriptura.

  224. He saw the great importance

  225. of putting the Bible

  226. into the people's hands.

  227. And so let's look at 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3:14

  228. verse 14,

  229. and into chapter 4,

  230. and verse 4 briefly this morning.

  231. Before we read it,

  232. I would like to remind you,

  233. as I do each Lord's Day, beloved,

  234. that this is God's Word to us,

  235. written for His glory

  236. and our good.

  237. We would all do well

  238. to listen to it

  239. in order to believe its promises

  240. and obey its commands.

  241. Paul writes to Timothy,

  242. but as for you,

  243. continue in what you have learned

  244. and have firmly believed,

  245. knowing from whom you learned it.

  246. And now from childhood

  247. you have been acquainted

  248. with the sacred writings

  249. which are able to make you wise

  250. for salvation

  251. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  252. All scripture is breathed out by God

  253. and profitable for teaching,

  254. for reproof,

  255. for correction,

  256. and for training in righteousness,

  257. that the man of God

  258. may be complete,

  259. equipped for every good one.

  260. I charge you in the presence of God

  261. and of Christ Jesus

  262. who is to judge the living and the dead

  263. and by His appearing and His kingdom

  264. preach the word.

  265. Be ready in season and out of season.

  266. Reprove, rebuke, and exhort

  267. with complete patience and teaching.

  268. For the time is coming

  269. when people will not endure sound teaching,

  270. but having itching ears,

  271. they will accumulate for themselves

  272. teachers to suit their own passions

  273. and will turn away from listening

  274. to the truth

  275. and wander off into myths.

  276. So a brief outline for this morning.

  277. Number one,

  278. the scripture alone is God's final authority.

  279. Number two,

  280. the scripture alone is God's final authority

  281. for justification.

  282. And number three,

  283. the scripture alone is God's final authority

  284. for sanctification.

  285. So firstly,

  286. the scripture alone is God's final authority.

  287. We'll take the text a bit out of order.

  288. Look at chapter four,

  289. verses one through four.

  290. Here we see Paul give to Timothy

  291. a simple charge.

  292. A big charge,

  293. but a simple one.

  294. Two,

  295. verse two,

  296. preach the word.

  297. Be ready,

  298. all the time is what he's saying,

  299. to bring about the correction

  300. and the encouragement

  301. that the church is going to need.

  302. And at the end of verse two,

  303. he says,

  304. with complete patience

  305. and teaching.

  306. Do this work of preaching the word

  307. with patience

  308. and careful attention.

  309. Do it in season and out of season.

  310. Do it in various forms and fashions.

  311. It's important that you do this work,

  312. Timothy,

  313. because,

  314. verse three tells us,

  315. a time is coming,

  316. and I say to you,

  317. and is here,

  318. when people don't want to hear

  319. sound teaching.

  320. They don't want to sit

  321. under the plain explanation

  322. of scripture.

  323. They want it entrapped

  324. with lots of frivolities.

  325. Beloved,

  326. I will tell you,

  327. I am so tired of seeing

  328. the kind of youth group shenanigans

  329. that go on around us in church.

  330. It is absolute silliness

  331. that goes on

  332. in the churches of our age.

  333. Why is this allowed to happen?

  334. Why is it tolerated?

  335. I just look at these things

  336. and I go,

  337. you all would leave immediately

  338. if I did some of the things

  339. I see happening.

  340. Why do these guys get away

  341. with this stuff?

  342. It's because the people,

  343. they're gathering for themselves,

  344. they're accumulating teachers.

  345. There's lots of them

  346. piled up

  347. that are suiting their passions,

  348. their desire to be entertained,

  349. their desire to live the lives

  350. that they want to live,

  351. to make a Christ

  352. of their own creation.

  353. They're gathering teachers

  354. that will support

  355. this very thing,

  356. not men that will just boldly

  357. proclaim what the text says.

  358. And they're wandering off

  359. into myths,

  360. away from the truth.

  361. If there was ever a day

  362. to cry,

  363. Sola Scriptura,

  364. this is that day.

  365. Now the doctrine of Sola Scriptura

  366. is known

  367. as the formal principle.

  368. When the Supreme Court

  369. is trying a difficult case,

  370. they look to other legal decisions

  371. and laws

  372. to see what unites them

  373. or norms them.

  374. They look for precedent.

  375. They look to consensus

  376. among legal decisions

  377. and laws

  378. as an appeal

  379. to an authority

  380. that is greater

  381. than themselves.

  382. If you keep up

  383. with Supreme Court decisions,

  384. you'll hear much

  385. of this language.

  386. Martin Luther,

  387. during the Reformation,

  388. pulled in his legal training

  389. when referring

  390. to Scripture

  391. as the norm

  392. of norms

  393. that cannot

  394. be normed.

  395. Stating,

  396. it is the absolute

  397. authority

  398. because it is from

  399. God himself.

  400. Nothing else

  401. can change

  402. the meaning

  403. of the Scripture.

  404. The text,

  405. it stands

  406. on its own.

  407. The norm

  408. of norms

  409. that cannot be normed

  410. or,

  411. in the Latin,

  412. if you want to nerd

  413. with me for a moment,

  414. norma normus

  415. non normata,

  416. which is cooler to say.

  417. Norma normus

  418. non normata.

  419. All this to say,

  420. we believe

  421. in Sola Scriptura

  422. and saying that

  423. is to say

  424. that we believe

  425. that the Bible

  426. is God's

  427. final

  428. authority.

  429. It is a

  430. closed canon.

  431. We're not looking

  432. for extra

  433. revelatory

  434. information.

  435. God has spoken

  436. in

  437. his

  438. word.

  439. If somebody

  440. says to me,

  441. God told me,

  442. I say,

  443. book,

  444. chapter,

  445. and verse,

  446. please.

  447. How has God

  448. told you?

  449. from the text,

  450. I would love

  451. to see it

  452. there.

  453. Now,

  454. to say that

  455. Scripture is the

  456. final authority

  457. is not to be

  458. misunderstood,

  459. that Scripture

  460. is the only

  461. authority.

  462. The Bible

  463. should not be

  464. read alone.

  465. Martin Luther

  466. once said,

  467. the Scripture's

  468. authority is not

  469. a naked

  470. authority.

  471. So we have

  472. helps as we

  473. open up

  474. the text.

  475. I'm glad for this.

  476. I don't sit

  477. in a cave

  478. just with

  479. the text.

  480. We have

  481. some helps

  482. and some

  483. ways that

  484. we can

  485. bring

  486. understanding

  487. and bearing

  488. to the text.

  489. We have

  490. church history.

  491. We're making

  492. a bit of an

  493. appeal to that

  494. today,

  495. aren't we?

  496. Not as an

  497. ultimate

  498. authority,

  499. but as

  500. an authority.

  501. What has

  502. the church

  503. believed

  504. about this,

  505. one doctrine

  506. or another?

  507. If we find

  508. ourselves coming

  509. up with some

  510. novel idea

  511. about the

  512. Bible,

  513. it may

  514. be,

  515. likely is,

  516. dangerous.

  517. Something new

  518. to be discovered.

  519. Hmm.

  520. If perhaps no

  521. Christian in the

  522. history of the

  523. church has

  524. thought what

  525. you think

  526. could be a

  527. problem for

  528. your theology,

  529. what has

  530. time taught

  531. us about

  532. any given

  533. doctrine?

  534. And we see

  535. helps from

  536. church history

  537. in the form

  538. of creeds,

  539. confessions,

  540. and catechisms.

  541. These tools

  542. are a great

  543. way to

  544. discover what

  545. the church

  546. has believed

  547. historically.

  548. We have

  549. used here

  550. the Apostles

  551. Creed.

  552. That's

  553. found embedded

  554. in the

  555. Heidelberg

  556. Catechism.

  557. The Heidelberg

  558. Catechism,

  559. as we've been

  560. reciting it

  561. together on

  562. Sunday mornings,

  563. has been

  564. explaining

  565. the Apostles

  566. Creed,

  567. what is meant

  568. by that.

  569. And you

  570. will note,

  571. if you ever

  572. look at any

  573. of these

  574. confessions,

  575. at the

  576. footnoting

  577. that's right

  578. there in

  579. your bulletin

  580. for the

  581. Scripture

  582. reference,

  583. right?

  584. The Bible

  585. being the

  586. ultimate

  587. authority,

  588. right?

  589. The Norma

  590. Normas

  591. Non

  592. Normata,

  593. right?

  594. The confession

  595. is not on the

  596. same level

  597. as the

  598. Scripture,

  599. but helps

  600. us to

  601. understand

  602. what the

  603. Scripture

  604. teaches

  605. on any

  606. given

  607. doctrine.

  608. These are

  609. helpful

  610. things to

  611. us.

  612. They ought

  613. to be

  614. taken up

  615. and

  616. considered

  617. carefully

  618. as they

  619. read the

  620. text.

  621. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 6 chapter mention

  622. chapter 6

  623. and verse

  624. 16,

  625. there God

  626. says,

  627. stand by

  628. the roads

  629. and look

  630. and ask

  631. for the

  632. ancient

  633. paths

  634. where the

  635. good way

  636. is and

  637. walk in

  638. it and

  639. find rest

  640. for your

  641. souls.

  642. Isn't that

  643. good?

  644. Stand by

  645. the roads

  646. and look

  647. and ask

  648. for the

  649. ancient

  650. paths

  651. where the

  652. good way

  653. is and

  654. walk in

  655. it and

  656. find rest

  657. for your

  658. souls.

  659. But then

  660. God says

  661. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 6 chapter mention

  662. chapter 6

  663. and verse

  664. 16 of

  665. Israel,

  666. but they

  667. said,

  668. we will

  669. not walk

  670. in it.

  671. And I

  672. pray that

  673. we would

  674. be ones

  675. who say

  676. we will

  677. walk in

  678. it,

  679. right,

  680. the good

  681. way and

  682. find rest

  683. for our

  684. souls.

  685. You also

  686. have,

  687. along with

  688. the Scripture

  689. as a way

  690. of reading

  691. it and

  692. understanding

  693. it,

  694. the teaching

  695. of your

  696. leaders.

  697. The author

  698. of Hebrews

  699. says in

  700. Hebrews 13

  701. and verse

  702. 7,

  703. remember

  704. your

  705. leaders,

  706. those who

  707. spoke to

  708. you the

  709. word of

  710. God,

  711. those who

  712. worked to

  713. faithfully

  714. unpack the

  715. text for

  716. you,

  717. those who

  718. are considering

  719. the culture

  720. in which we

  721. live and

  722. the needs

  723. of our

  724. fellowship and

  725. are working

  726. prayerfully to

  727. get out ahead

  728. of you and

  729. help equip you

  730. for the days

  731. in which we

  732. live.

  733. So the

  734. Scripture

  735. alone is

  736. God's

  737. final

  738. authority.

  739. Paul says

  740. this to

  741. Timothy,

  742. you need

  743. to continue

  744. to preach

  745. the word

  746. because people

  747. aren't going

  748. to want to

  749. hear it,

  750. but keep

  751. doing it

  752. anyway.

  753. And as

  754. we'll see

  755. at the very

  756. end of

  757. chapter 3,

  758. it's because

  759. God is

  760. himself its

  761. source and

  762. it is a

  763. sufficient

  764. text.

  765. Second

  766. point,

  767. the Scripture

  768. alone is

  769. God's

  770. final

  771. authority

  772. for

  773. justification.

  774. If you're

  775. unfamiliar with

  776. this term,

  777. it means

  778. to be

  779. declared

  780. righteous,

  781. holy,

  782. without

  783. wrong,

  784. with all

  785. the law

  786. keeping

  787. required of

  788. you before

  789. God.

  790. You can see

  791. why we use

  792. the word

  793. justification.

  794. We're not

  795. trying to be

  796. churchy,

  797. but it summarizes

  798. a big

  799. idea.

  800. We will

  801. all stand

  802. before the

  803. judgment of

  804. God one

  805. day.

  806. We will

  807. either be

  808. sent to

  809. eternal

  810. punishment as

  811. a reprobate,

  812. or we

  813. will be

  814. seen as

  815. justified,

  816. as having

  817. all of our

  818. sins expunged

  819. from our

  820. record and

  821. being given

  822. righteousness

  823. by Christ.

  824. And the

  825. Scripture

  826. alone is

  827. God's

  828. authority

  829. for

  830. justification.

  831. We see

  832. this in

  833. verse 14

  834. and 15

  835. of chapter

  836. 3.

  837. There's this

  838. exhortation

  839. there to

  840. Timothy to

  841. continue in

  842. what he

  843. had learned,

  844. what he

  845. had learned

  846. from Paul

  847. and how

  848. as a

  849. child he

  850. was acquainted

  851. with the

  852. writings by

  853. his mother

  854. and his

  855. grandmother.

  856. And at

  857. the end of

  858. verse 15,

  859. Paul there

  860. says,

  861. which are

  862. able to

  863. make you

  864. wise for

  865. salvation

  866. through faith

  867. in Christ

  868. Jesus.

  869. The Scripture

  870. teaches us that

  871. we are saved

  872. by grace

  873. alone,

  874. through faith

  875. alone,

  876. in Jesus

  877. Christ

  878. alone.

  879. And we

  880. must hear

  881. this message.

  882. It must be

  883. taken up and

  884. read.

  885. It must be

  886. proclaimed to

  887. us.

  888. We must

  889. hear the

  890. good news

  891. of the

  892. word that

  893. we might

  894. be saved.

  895. I was

  896. really grateful

  897. for a bit

  898. of an

  899. anecdote.

  900. Many years

  901. ago I went

  902. together for

  903. the gospel

  904. with some

  905. men from

  906. our church

  907. and a

  908. man named

  909. Ash Harris

  910. who some

  911. of you

  912. know was

  913. there with

  914. us.

  915. And at

  916. the beginning

  917. as a

  918. curiosity,

  919. most of

  920. the men

  921. at this

  922. conference

  923. are leaders

  924. in churches

  925. or seminary

  926. students.

  927. And they

  928. had us all

  929. stand up

  930. and then be

  931. seated as

  932. questions were

  933. asked about

  934. how it was

  935. we heard

  936. the gospel.

  937. And I was

  938. very encouraged

  939. as a

  940. pastor of,

  941. a father of

  942. children,

  943. a pastor of

  944. a church

  945. full of

  946. children,

  947. that the

  948. predominant

  949. group that

  950. sat,

  951. sat when

  952. the question

  953. was asked

  954. if your

  955. parents shared

  956. the gospel

  957. with you

  958. and you

  959. came to

  960. faith in

  961. Christ because

  962. of that

  963. proclamation,

  964. sit down.

  965. And I mean

  966. the stadium

  967. was like

  968. kind of

  969. sitting.

  970. A massive

  971. number of

  972. the people

  973. in that

  974. room came

  975. to faith

  976. because of

  977. the faithful

  978. preaching of

  979. the gospel

  980. by their

  981. parents being

  982. encouraged

  983. parents.

  984. But then I

  985. was especially

  986. encouraged as

  987. Ash Harris did

  988. not sit for

  989. that or

  990. many other

  991. invitations to

  992. sit and

  993. finally he was

  994. part of the

  995. group of

  996. like,

  997. okay,

  998. well any

  999. other way I

  1000. can't think

  1001. of,

  1002. go ahead and

  1003. sit down.

  1004. And so I

  1005. just leaned

  1006. over and

  1007. said,

  1008. Ash,

  1009. when did

  1010. you first

  1011. hear the

  1012. gospel?

  1013. And Ash

  1014. first heard

  1015. the gospel

  1016. when he

  1017. was deployed

  1018. in Iraq

  1019. and had

  1020. been handed

  1021. a New

  1022. Testament

  1023. by a

  1024. military

  1025. chaplain

  1026. handing him

  1027. out and

  1028. Ash said,

  1029. this seems

  1030. important and

  1031. stuck it in

  1032. his pocket.

  1033. And he'd

  1034. come back

  1035. from a

  1036. particular

  1037. mission that

  1038. was rattling

  1039. to him and

  1040. he sat in the

  1041. shade of a

  1042. Humvee and

  1043. he opened up

  1044. the book of

  1045. John and

  1046. began to

  1047. read about

  1048. the word

  1049. made flesh.

  1050. And Ash

  1051. became a

  1052. Christian through

  1053. the reading

  1054. of the text.

  1055. So whether

  1056. it's proclaimed

  1057. from our

  1058. mouths or

  1059. taken up

  1060. and read,

  1061. the scripture

  1062. is what

  1063. teaches us

  1064. how it is

  1065. we come

  1066. to faith

  1067. in Christ.

  1068. Paul writes

  1069. in Romans 10,

  1070. I'll look forward

  1071. to unpacking

  1072. this in

  1073. some time,

  1074. a year

  1075. maybe.

  1076. How then

  1077. will they

  1078. call on him

  1079. in whom

  1080. they have

  1081. not believed?

  1082. And how

  1083. are they to

  1084. believe in

  1085. whom they

  1086. have never

  1087. heard?

  1088. And how

  1089. are they to

  1090. hear without

  1091. someone

  1092. preaching?

  1093. And how

  1094. are they to

  1095. preach unless

  1096. they are

  1097. sent?

  1098. As it is

  1099. written,

  1100. how beautiful

  1101. are the

  1102. feet of

  1103. those who

  1104. preach the

  1105. good news.

  1106. But they

  1107. have not all

  1108. obeyed the

  1109. gospel,

  1110. for Isaiah

  1111. says,

  1112. Lord,

  1113. who has

  1114. believed

  1115. what he

  1116. has heard

  1117. from us?

  1118. So faith

  1119. comes from

  1120. hearing,

  1121. and hearing

  1122. through the

  1123. word of

  1124. Christ.

  1125. Psalm 19,

    Psalms 19:7

  1126. verse 7 and

  1127. following,

  1128. the law of

  1129. the Lord is

  1130. perfect,

  1131. reviving the

  1132. soul.

  1133. The testimony

  1134. of the Lord

  1135. is sure,

  1136. making wise

  1137. the simple.

  1138. The precepts

  1139. of the Lord

  1140. are right,

  1141. rejoicing the

  1142. heart.

  1143. The commandment

  1144. of the Lord

  1145. is pure,

  1146. enlightening the

  1147. eyes.

  1148. The fear of

  1149. the Lord is

  1150. clean,

  1151. enduring forever.

  1152. The rules of

  1153. the Lord are

  1154. true and

  1155. righteous

  1156. altogether.

  1157. More to be

  1158. desired are

  1159. they than

  1160. gold,

  1161. even much

  1162. fine gold,

  1163. sweeter also

  1164. than honey and

  1165. drippings of

  1166. the honeycomb.

  1167. moreover,

  1168. by them

  1169. is your

  1170. servant warned,

  1171. and keeping

  1172. them there

  1173. is great

  1174. reward.

  1175. The Bible,

  1176. like sola

  1177. scriptura,

  1178. the Bible

  1179. alone is

  1180. God's

  1181. authority

  1182. for

  1183. justification.

  1184. It is

  1185. the way

  1186. in which

  1187. we are

  1188. made wise

  1189. for salvation

  1190. through faith

  1191. in Christ

  1192. Jesus.

  1193. Beloved,

  1194. we should be

  1195. a people

  1196. of the book

  1197. for our

  1198. sake,

  1199. for the sake

  1200. of others.

  1201. Thirdly,

  1202. the scripture

  1203. alone is

  1204. God's

  1205. final authority

  1206. for

  1207. sanctification.

  1208. Look at

  1209. verses 16

  1210. and 17.

  1211. For growing

  1212. up in the

  1213. faith,

  1214. having been

  1215. justified,

  1216. how is it

  1217. that we

  1218. then pursue

  1219. holiness?

  1220. We're given

  1221. the spirit

  1222. of Christ

  1223. that we

  1224. might

  1225. understand,

  1226. apply,

  1227. and be

  1228. empowered

  1229. to live

  1230. the word

  1231. of Christ.

  1232. Christ.

  1233. Here Paul

  1234. writes,

  1235. all scripture

  1236. breathed out

  1237. by God,

  1238. exhaled

  1239. by God,

  1240. he's the

  1241. very source

  1242. of it,

  1243. and it's

  1244. profitable

  1245. for teaching,

  1246. reproof,

  1247. correction,

  1248. and training

  1249. in righteousness,

  1250. in holiness,

  1251. in right

  1252. living,

  1253. in law

  1254. keeping.

  1255. It's

  1256. profitable

  1257. for these

  1258. things,

  1259. and it's

  1260. profitable

  1261. to the

  1262. extent,

  1263. he qualifies,

  1264. that the

  1265. man of

  1266. God may

  1267. be complete,

  1268. equipped for

  1269. every good

  1270. work.

  1271. Not some

  1272. good work.

  1273. We don't

  1274. need extra

  1275. revelation to

  1276. tell us

  1277. those things.

  1278. For every

  1279. good work,

  1280. it's a

  1281. sufficient

  1282. guide for

  1283. all

  1284. holiness.

  1285. Again,

  1286. Martin

  1287. Luther,

  1288. he said,

  1289. a simple

  1290. layman

  1291. armed

  1292. with

  1293. scripture

  1294. is to

  1295. be

  1296. believed

  1297. above

  1298. a

  1299. pope

  1300. or

  1301. a

  1302. council

  1303. without

  1304. it.

  1305. Scripture

  1306. is

  1307. powerful,

  1308. sharper

  1309. than any

  1310. two-edged

  1311. sword,

  1312. piercing

  1313. to the

  1314. joint

  1315. and the

  1316. marrow.

  1317. It lays

  1318. bare our

  1319. hearts.

  1320. It shows

  1321. us where

  1322. we need

  1323. to repent

  1324. and pray

  1325. for the

  1326. grace to

  1327. pursue

  1328. holiness

  1329. in Christ.

  1330. So we

  1331. should want

  1332. to hear

  1333. it.

  1334. We should

  1335. want to

  1336. hear its

  1337. corrections.

  1338. It should

  1339. be sweet

  1340. to us

  1341. to be

  1342. shown our

  1343. sin that

  1344. we might

  1345. repent

  1346. and pursue

  1347. Christ.

  1348. Psalm

    Psalms 119:9

  1349. 119,

  1350. verse 9

  1351. and following,

  1352. how can a

  1353. young man

  1354. keep his

  1355. way pure?

  1356. By

  1357. guarding it

  1358. according to

  1359. your word.

  1360. With my

  1361. whole heart

  1362. I seek

  1363. you.

  1364. Let me

  1365. not wander

  1366. from your

  1367. commandments.

  1368. I have

  1369. stored up

  1370. your word

  1371. in my

  1372. heart

  1373. that I

  1374. might not

  1375. sin

  1376. against you.

  1377. So the

  1378. word is

  1379. of great

  1380. importance

  1381. and working

  1382. through it

  1383. with care

  1384. matters

  1385. greatly.

  1386. Coming

  1387. back

  1388. to what

  1389. may feel

  1390. like the

  1391. simple truth

  1392. of the

  1393. gospel.

  1394. We say

  1395. to you

  1396. beloved,

  1397. especially

  1398. men,

  1399. the hill

  1400. we need

  1401. to die

  1402. on.

  1403. The

  1404. justification

  1405. by grace

  1406. alone,

  1407. through faith

  1408. alone,

  1409. in Christ

  1410. alone.

  1411. Everything

  1412. else

  1413. is subservient

  1414. to this.

  1415. Things to

  1416. discuss and

  1417. consider,

  1418. but not

  1419. the hill

  1420. to die

  1421. on.

  1422. I am

  1423. grateful that

  1424. when we

  1425. began meeting

  1426. as a church

  1427. almost 15

  1428. years ago,

  1429. God had

  1430. firmly

  1431. concreted in

  1432. our hearts

  1433. the doctrine

  1434. of the

  1435. sufficiency

  1436. of scripture.

  1437. I am so

  1438. glad that

  1439. God had

  1440. exposed us

  1441. to the

  1442. Reformation

  1443. and to

  1444. the Puritans,

  1445. that we

  1446. could cry

  1447. together as

  1448. young men

  1449. sola

  1450. scriptura.

  1451. I am

  1452. grateful that

  1453. God kindly

  1454. took us to

  1455. the text

  1456. and to

  1457. faithful Christians

  1458. of the past

  1459. that took

  1460. us to

  1461. the text.

  1462. I am

  1463. grateful that

  1464. our great

  1465. desire was

  1466. to see

  1467. Christ

  1468. magnified

  1469. through the

  1470. teaching,

  1471. understanding,

  1472. and living

  1473. of his

  1474. word.

  1475. I am

  1476. grateful that

  1477. God has

  1478. gathered a

  1479. people who

  1480. desire the

  1481. same.

  1482. I am

  1483. grateful that

  1484. the pressure

  1485. I feel from

  1486. you is a

  1487. pressure toward

  1488. faithfulness.

  1489. I am so

  1490. glad for that.

  1491. I don't

  1492. stand up here

  1493. in opposition

  1494. to you as

  1495. I try to be

  1496. faithful with

  1497. the text.

  1498. I know you

  1499. want faithfulness.

  1500. That's such

  1501. an encouragement

  1502. to me and I

  1503. know to the

  1504. other men

  1505. who preach

  1506. on Sundays.

  1507. You just

  1508. want us to

  1509. bring you

  1510. the text.

  1511. Keep at

  1512. that.

  1513. Pressure us

  1514. in that

  1515. way.

  1516. I am

  1517. grateful that

  1518. you would

  1519. take serious

  1520. issue with

  1521. me dressing

  1522. up as a

  1523. Disney character

  1524. on a Sunday

  1525. morning.

  1526. Ask me if

  1527. you don't know

  1528. what I'm

  1529. talking about.

  1530. Fire me

  1531. the Sunday

  1532. that I do

  1533. it.

  1534. That's how

  1535. you know I'm

  1536. ready to be

  1537. fired, right?

  1538. I show up.

  1539. I show up as

  1540. a Disney

  1541. character.

  1542. I am

  1543. grateful that

  1544. next week you

  1545. will gather

  1546. once again and

  1547. hear me Lord

  1548. willing proclaim

  1549. the excellencies

  1550. of a salvation

  1551. that is told to

  1552. us in the

  1553. scripture alone

  1554. and that comes

  1555. to us by

  1556. grace alone

  1557. through faith

  1558. alone in

  1559. Jesus Christ

  1560. alone to

  1561. the glory of

  1562. God alone.

  1563. so that was

  1564. my introduction

  1565. to Romans

    Romans 4:1–12

  1566. chapter 4

  1567. verses 1

  1568. through 12.

  1569. I hadn't

  1570. quite written

  1571. all that but

  1572. I had written

  1573. a lot of

  1574. it and so

  1575. we'll pick

  1576. up the text

  1577. next week

  1578. Lord willing

  1579. but in

  1580. closing let

  1581. me read to

  1582. you a

  1583. poem by

  1584. Martin

  1585. Luther.

  1586. Feelings

  1587. come and

  1588. feelings go

  1589. and feelings

  1590. are deceiving.

  1591. My warrant

  1592. is the word

  1593. of God not

  1594. else is worth

  1595. believing.

  1596. Though all

  1597. my heart

  1598. should feel

  1599. condemned for

  1600. want of some

  1601. sweet token

  1602. there is one

  1603. greater than

  1604. my heart

  1605. whose word

  1606. cannot be

  1607. broken.

  1608. I'll trust

  1609. in God's

  1610. unchanging

  1611. word till

  1612. soul and

  1613. body sever

  1614. for though

  1615. all things

  1616. shall pass

  1617. away his

  1618. word shall

  1619. stand forever.

  1620. Let's pray

  1621. together.

  1622. Let's pray

  1623. together.
