  1. Just focus in on the last part of Christ's prayer in John 17.

  2. This particular chapter has meant a lot to me over the years as I've been at death's doorstep multiple times with my physical illnesses I've had.

  3. And it's one of the few passages that kind of give us a direction to look at life beyond this life.

  4. And it's raised my mind to God and eternity.

  5. It's commonly referred to as the high priestly prayer of Christ.

  6. And indeed, it is the true Lord's Prayer.

  7. The one we're familiar with, the one in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, tend to be more known as the Disciples' Prayer, where He teaches His disciples to pray.

  8. So this truly is the Lord's Prayer.

  9. It's a, what does Jesus pray?

  10. What is He like when He speaks to the Father?

  11. It's only about 650 words.

  12. It just takes a couple minutes to read.

  13. But it is deep and profound.

  14. Every single word of it, you could exhaust.

  15. Many years ago, on a commentary on John 17, Calvin wrote,

  16. This prayer of Christ is a safe harbor.

  17. And whoever retreats into it is safe from all danger of shipwreck.

  18. For it has, Christ has solemnly sworn that He will devote His care and diligence to our salvation.

  19. Let the world then condemn us a thousand times.

  20. This alone ought to satisfy us.

  21. That Christ acknowledges us to be His heritage and pleas with the Father for us.

  22. So this prayer is just one of a kind.

  23. You don't find anything like this anywhere else in the Scripture.

  24. It kind of looks like Moses' prayer, sort of, at the end of Deuteronomy, before Moses departs this world.

  25. And so think about what's on Jesus' mind, just the context.

  26. He's spending time with His disciples.

  27. He's finished the Last Supper with them.

  28. And they're getting ready to kind of go towards Gethsemane.

  29. And during this time, He lifts up His voice to the Father.

  30. And He prays and pours out His voice to the Father.

  31. I'll give you a quick outline of the prayer.

  32. But we're only going to focus on the last part of it.

  33. There's three parts that we've typically divided this prayer up into.

  34. The first part is in verses 1 through 5.

  35. And this is Jesus' praise for Himself.

  36. And the focus is the Father's glory.

  37. And in turn, His own glory.

  38. Second part, Jesus prays for His disciples.

  39. We see that in verse 6 through 19.

  40. And the focus of the Christ prayer during that time is preservation and mission.

  41. And then thirdly, what we'll be focusing on today is Jesus' praise for the present and future believers.

  42. The key is their oneness and unity.

  43. So that's what we're focusing in on today.

  44. But you see in verse 20, Jesus says,

  45. I do not ask for these only, but also those who will believe in Me through their word.

  46. And so Jesus is confident that His disciples, after all that's about to happen, are going to return.

  47. And they're going to go out.

  48. And they're going to preach the good news.

  49. And start the church.

  50. Read in Acts chapter 2, verse 42.

    Acts 2:42

  51. This happened.

  52. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, the breaking of bread and to prayers.

  53. So Jesus in this time prays for us.

  54. And it's known, this whole prayer, John 17, reveals to us one of the very unique and specific roles,

  55. I don't think a lot of us think about maybe on a daily basis,

  56. but a role that Christ plays in our lives.

  57. A significant role.

  58. He is our great high priest.

  59. As sinners that are unclean and unable to go into the holy presence of God,

  60. Jesus paid the final sacrifice for our sins and gave us His righteousness so that we could stand clean before God.

  61. And now He intercedes on our behalf.

  62. 700 years ago, before Christ, Isaiah actually gave us a glimpse of this role

  63. in prophesying about the work of Christ and the Messiah, the suffering servant, in Isaiah 53.

  64. Starting in verse 11.

  65. You don't have to turn there.

  66. There's one other place for you to look at today outside this.

  67. But we get a glimpse of His priestly work on our behalf.

  68. But Isaiah spoke 700 years before Christ.

  69. Out of the anguish of his soul, he shall see and be satisfied.

  70. By his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous.

  71. And he shall bear their iniquities.

  72. There's like the salvific part of this.

  73. Christ died on our behalf.

  74. Verse 12.

  75. Therefore, I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoiled with the strong,

  76. because he poured out his soul to death, and he was numbered with the transgressors.

  77. Yet he bore the sins of many and makes intercession for the transgressors.

  78. He stands before the Father, right?

  79. Making intercession on our behalf.

  80. And that's what the writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews 8, 1 and 2.

  81. He expresses Christ's priestly care for us.

  82. So think about this.

  83. We're about to read the passage together.

  84. But some of you may have someone in your life who has a very deep walk with Christ,

  85. who enjoys such deep fellowship with God.

  86. And when, if you said, if I would like to just pray with one person before I face this trial,

  87. who would that person be?

  88. Right?

  89. What friend would you think of?

  90. But a cool thought, as we begin to read this, is Robert Murray McShane,

  91. young Scottish pastor in the 1800s, preached a sermon on John 17.

  92. And he said this, really profound.

  93. If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies.

  94. Yet distance makes no difference.

  95. He is praying for me.

  96. It's amazing.

  97. So let's read the passage together.

  98. We're just going to focus on the last part of this.

  99. John 17, look at verse 20.

  100. Jesus praying.

  101. He says,

  102. I do not ask for these only,

  103. but also for those who will believe in me through their word,

  104. that they may all be one,

  105. just as you, Father, are in me,

  106. and I in you,

  107. that they also may be in us,

  108. so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  109. The glory that you have given me,

  110. I have given to them.

  111. That they may all be one,

  112. even as we are one.

  113. I in them,

  114. and you in me,

  115. that they may become perfectly one,

  116. so that the world may also know that you have sent me,

  117. and love them even as you love me.

  118. Father,

  119. I desire that they also,

  120. whom you have given me,

  121. may be with me where I am,

  122. to see my glory,

  123. the glory of the Father,

  124. even though,

  125. I'm sorry,

  126. because,

  127. forgive me,

  128. typo here,

  129. they may see my glory,

  130. that you have given me,

  131. because you love me,

  132. before the foundation of the world.

  133. Oh,

  134. righteous Father,

  135. even though the world does not know you,

  136. I know you,

  137. and these know you,

  138. that you have sent me.

  139. I have made known to them your name,

  140. and I will continue to make it known,

  141. that the love with which you have loved me,

  142. may be in them,

  143. and I in them.

  144. Join me in a quick word of prayer.

  145. Father,

  146. we just looked up this time to you,

  147. please work in our hearts,

  148. through your Holy Spirit,

  149. apply,

  150. apply your word,

  151. to our hearts,

  152. that we would not walk away,

  153. from this place,

  154. unchanged,

  155. that you would give us,

  156. a picture of what,

  157. you prayed for us,

  158. long ago,

  159. you give us deep insight,

  160. into your word,

  161. Lord,

  162. in Christ's name,

  163. Amen.

  164. So,

  165. we're going to break this up,

  166. into a few different pieces,

  167. but,

  168. point number one,

  169. as we're walking through this passage,

  170. point number one,

  171. is Jesus prays,

  172. for true unity,

  173. among believers.

  174. Jesus prays,

  175. for true unity,

  176. among believers.

  177. And so,

  178. under number one,

  179. we see,

  180. there's a few sub points,

  181. but the sub point,

  182. A,

  183. underneath this,

  184. is he has,

  185. a request,

  186. for true unity.

  187. Look at verse 21,

  188. that they may all,

  189. be one.

  190. Alright?

  191. And,

  192. a good,

  193. way to kind of,

  194. get to the heart of this,

  195. about what true unity means,

  196. is to kind of expose,

  197. what false unity,

  198. actually is.

  199. Many in the church today,

  200. and most people,

  201. well meaning,

  202. will make remarks like,

  203. Christians just seem so divided,

  204. how come there's so many different,

  205. churches,

  206. how come there's different,

  207. denominations,

  208. after all,

  209. like isn't just Jesus,

  210. all that matters,

  211. and they'll kind of like,

  212. simplify,

  213. the Christian life,

  214. with phrases like that,

  215. and they'll say like,

  216. we need to do something,

  217. to create unity,

  218. among believers.

  219. And again,

  220. I know,

  221. like well meeting people,

  222. who have said such things,

  223. but often,

  224. thoughts like that,

  225. are kind of misguided,

  226. and,

  227. and ignorant.

  228. false,

  229. superficial unity,

  230. sometimes,

  231. is created,

  232. at the expense,

  233. of truth,

  234. and doctrine.

  235. Churches may avoid,

  236. hard,

  237. Bible topics,

  238. just so they can,

  239. make people feel,

  240. better,

  241. about,

  242. themselves.

  243. But let me give you,

  244. a couple of diagnostic questions,

  245. when it comes to this idea,

  246. of unity.

  247. A couple of diagnostic questions.

  248. What are the first things,

  249. that people talk about,

  250. when they ask you about,

  251. when you ask them,

  252. about their church?

  253. That's when it goes,

  254. Christ's family,

  255. tell me about that church.

  256. Like what's the first thing you say?

  257. Or somebody else,

  258. like what comes out of their mouth?

  259. Like what do you enjoy,

  260. about that church?

  261. The second question,

  262. is us asking ourselves,

  263. is what is the gathering component,

  264. of a local church?

  265. Like why do people come there?

  266. Like what's the purpose?

  267. What's the goal?

  268. What brings them together?

  269. And often in today's,

  270. contemporary,

  271. evangelicalism,

  272. local churches have a large,

  273. range of gathering components.

  274. Alright?

  275. There's many demographics.

  276. There's the age demographic.

  277. I like going to this church,

  278. because it has a youth program,

  279. or teenagers,

  280. or older people,

  281. or young adults.

  282. Singles.

  283. That's why we like going there.

  284. Another demographic.

  285. Some sort of effemnity, right?

  286. That church has a lot of families.

  287. I like going to that church.

  288. Or a lot of children.

  289. Or these people seem,

  290. richer upper class,

  291. or middle class,

  292. or whatever it may be.

  293. A big one,

  294. among today's denominations,

  295. are music.

  296. Do you have contemporary cool music,

  297. or do you have the old people,

  298. organ,

  299. you know,

  300. piano music?

  301. Like they'll go,

  302. I've heard people say,

  303. that's why they go where they go.

  304. Programs.

  305. This is probably the biggest one.

  306. This church has a place for me,

  307. and my family to plug in.

  308. We have all these different things.

  309. We have children's ministries,

  310. youth ministries,

  311. college ministries,

  312. single ministries,

  313. on and on and on.

  314. We have a drama team,

  315. whatever it may be, right?

  316. So,

  317. we don't have a drama team here.

  318. So,

  319. also facilities.

  320. That's a really nice building.

  321. That's a beautiful church building,

  322. and a great parking lot,

  323. you know,

  324. on and on.

  325. They have good coffee,

  326. whatever it may be.

  327. So,

  328. there's all sorts of things

  329. that people say

  330. is the gathering component

  331. of their church.

  332. Right?

  333. I heard on a local Christian radio station

  334. a while back,

  335. they were allowing people to call in,

  336. and I said,

  337. this was the question,

  338. how do you do church?

  339. And you got all kind of crazy answers on that.

  340. But here's the deal.

  341. One of the big problems

  342. with focusing on demographics

  343. as a point of unity

  344. is that something happens

  345. to that component?

  346. Your church is gone.

  347. If that component was removed,

  348. would that church divide?

  349. Would it break up?

  350. What would happen?

  351. The gathering component,

  352. for any other reason

  353. than the Lord Jesus Christ,

  354. that church will fail.

  355. That church won't stand.

  356. But isn't it sad, though,

  357. that the church

  358. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  359. that He bought with His own blood,

  360. usually,

  361. or sometimes,

  362. is not the gathering component

  363. for why a church gathers.

  364. It's all kind of

  365. other things

  366. other than His life,

  367. His death,

  368. and His resurrection.

  369. That's the main event

  370. for which we gather.

  371. But many churches do not.

  372. It is that bother you

  373. that many people ask the question,

  374. how do you do church

  375. when really,

  376. the only thing that matters

  377. is what would Christ

  378. have us do

  379. when we gather?

  380. What is His opinion?

  381. He is the head of the church.

  382. It is His church,

  383. His bride.

  384. He has told us

  385. what we ought to be doing

  386. when we gather.

  387. And it is heartbreaking

  388. that thousands of people

  389. have flocked to local churches

  390. even this morning

  391. to get a quick fix,

  392. to have a real quick shot

  393. of feel-goodism,

  394. a pop psychology talk

  395. that has nothing to do

  396. with God's Word.

  397. Or isn't it sad

  398. that the first thing

  399. that people think of

  400. of their church

  401. is a pastor

  402. or a program,

  403. something that enhances

  404. their life

  405. instead of the Son of God?

  406. Right?

  407. So please,

  408. I'm not saying

  409. that it's okay

  410. to mention some of the good things

  411. about our church,

  412. but I pray that Christ

  413. is the gathering component.

  414. I pray He is why we gather.

  415. Period.

  416. And I tremble to think

  417. how Christ would see

  418. some churches

  419. when you look at

  420. Revelation chapter,

  421. the early chapters

  422. when He addresses

  423. the churches.

  424. And He commends them

  425. for good things

  426. and He condemns them

  427. for bad things.

  428. Right?

  429. Underneath this first point

  430. about Jesus praying

  431. for unity

  432. is another point.

  433. Point B.

  434. What is the source

  435. of true unity?

  436. What is the source

  437. of true unity?

  438. Look at verse 21 and 22.

  439. That they may all be one

  440. just as you, Father,

  441. are in me

  442. and I in you.

  443. that they also

  444. may be in us.

  445. Look at verse 22.

  446. The glory

  447. that you have given me,

  448. I have given to them

  449. that they may be one

  450. even as we are one.

  451. I in them

  452. and you in me

  453. that they may be

  454. perfectly one.

  455. Alright?

  456. So,

  457. based on this text,

  458. very clearly,

  459. we see that unity

  460. is not something

  461. that we create.

  462. It's something

  463. that exists

  464. already.

  465. It's not of human origin.

  466. It's something

  467. that exists

  468. in the nature

  469. of God Himself.

  470. The unity of all believers

  471. is grounded

  472. in the love

  473. and unity

  474. that exists

  475. in the Godhead.

  476. Okay?

  477. Father,

  478. Son,

  479. and Holy Spirit.

  480. They are united

  481. completely,

  482. perfectly one

  483. in their motive,

  484. in their glory,

  485. in their mission,

  486. in their redemptive purpose.

  487. They are perfectly one,

  488. unified.

  489. So,

  490. spiritual unity

  491. comes to us

  492. from the reality

  493. of His redemptive activity

  494. in our lives.

  495. Okay?

  496. Unity,

  497. we should be concerned about,

  498. is not a physical,

  499. visible unity

  500. in our lives,

  501. but a unity

  502. that is

  503. not outward

  504. and physical

  505. but one that's

  506. spiritual

  507. and invisible.

  508. Unseen.

  509. Spiritual unity.

  510. That they would be

  511. perfectly one.

  512. Alright?

  513. Really quickly,

  514. this is the only place

  515. you have to turn

  516. outside of our main passage,

  517. but hold your hand,

  518. John 17.

  519. Look at Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  520. chapter 4.

  521. Paul writing

  522. to the church

  523. at Ephesus

  524. and he kind of

  525. clears the air

  526. on what unity

  527. actually is.

  528. Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:1

  529. verse 1,

  530. and he's addressing

  531. the church,

  532. and he says

  533. in verse 1,

  534. I therefore,

  535. a prisoner of the Lord,

  536. urge you

  537. to walk in a manner

  538. worthy of the calling

  539. to which you have been called,

  540. with all humility

  541. and gentleness,

  542. with patience,

  543. bearing with one another

  544. in love,

  545. eager to maintain

  546. that there it is,

  547. the unity of the Spirit

  548. in the bond of peace.

  549. There is one body

  550. and one Spirit,

  551. just as you were called

  552. to the one hope

  553. that belongs to your call.

  554. One Lord,

  555. one faith,

  556. one baptism,

  557. one God and Father of all,

  558. who is over all

  559. and through all

  560. and in all.

  561. So there's a lot

  562. to talk about right there.

  563. Just think about two things

  564. if you notice.

  565. Unity is completely

  566. a spiritual matter

  567. and not physical.

  568. Alright?

  569. Our passage,

  570. the Scripture,

  571. doesn't define unity

  572. in a physical,

  573. fluctuating,

  574. visible way.

  575. Rather,

  576. it's this constant unity

  577. that is invisible.

  578. Christ's prayer

  579. is answered

  580. every time a dead sinner

  581. is raised from death

  582. and brought

  583. into His kingdom.

  584. But secondly,

  585. notice this

  586. about this passage,

  587. that unity

  588. is maintained

  589. and preserved,

  590. not created.

  591. Okay?

  592. It already exists

  593. because of Christ

  594. and His Spirit

  595. that dwells within us.

  596. So we're called

  597. to preserve it,

  598. protect it,

  599. right?

  600. Not create it.

  601. Not to find

  602. some outward thing

  603. that brings us

  604. unity.

  605. Very clear passage.

  606. So let me just

  607. give you a quick

  608. example of this.

  609. For many years,

  610. they no longer

  611. have this conference,

  612. but in Louisville,

  613. every other year,

  614. they had a conference

  615. called

  616. Together for the Gospel.

  617. And at this conference,

  618. you had guys

  619. from different

  620. denominational backgrounds,

  621. primarily

  622. Southern Baptists,

  623. Presbyterian guys,

  624. Baptists like

  625. Mark Dever,

  626. and John Piper,

  627. John MacArthur,

  628. Al Mohler.

  629. Then you had

  630. PCA guys,

  631. Presbyterian guys

  632. like Spurl,

  633. Ligon Duncan,

  634. Kevin DeYoung,

  635. and they were all

  636. just really good

  637. buddies,

  638. all just really

  639. good friends.

  640. They disagree

  641. like on certain

  642. issues like baptism

  643. or like church

  644. government,

  645. but they are all

  646. really close.

  647. They're saying

  648. we are united

  649. in Christ.

  650. We are united

  651. in the Gospel,

  652. right?

  653. And such

  654. close friends.

  655. So it can go

  656. across denominational

  657. lines.

  658. In fact,

  659. I'm okay with

  660. denominations

  661. because it actually

  662. means that people

  663. have convictions

  664. about things,

  665. right?

  666. We actually believe

  667. something that

  668. the Scripture

  669. teaches.

  670. But there is

  671. unity that exists

  672. in those who

  673. have been born

  674. again and who

  675. have believed

  676. in the Gospel,

  677. right?

  678. There is spiritual

  679. unity.

  680. The last little

  681. part underneath

  682. point number one

  683. is this,

  684. the result of

  685. true unity.

  686. The result of

  687. true unity.

  688. Verse 21,

  689. the second part,

  690. he says,

  691. so that the world

  692. may believe

  693. that you have

  694. sent me.

  695. look at verse

  696. 23,

  697. so that the

  698. world may

  699. know that

  700. you have

  701. sent me

  702. and love

  703. them even

  704. as you

  705. have loved

  706. me.

  707. And so,

  708. the result of

  709. true unity,

  710. one of those

  711. is evangelistic.

  712. Sin causes

  713. division and

  714. hatred.

  715. Sin causes

  716. people to

  717. separate,

  718. go their own

  719. ways.

  720. the church

  721. is meant

  722. to be one

  723. of the

  724. greatest

  725. ways that

  726. we display

  727. to a

  728. dying

  729. world

  730. who God

  731. actually

  732. is and

  733. what was

  734. meant

  735. before the

  736. fall,

  737. right?

  738. By loving

  739. one another

  740. well,

  741. loving in

  742. the grace

  743. of God,

  744. living in

  745. community

  746. with one

  747. another.

  748. I've heard

  749. it said

  750. a long time

  751. ago that

  752. the church

  753. is the

  754. Gospel

  755. made

  756. visible.

  757. Like,

  758. the world

  759. is to see

  760. the unity

  761. that we

  762. have because

  763. of Christ

  764. and because

  765. of the

  766. indwelling

  767. Spirit.

  768. Right?

  769. Beautiful.

  770. Jesus says

  771. that that

  772. unity,

  773. that oneness

  774. that He

  775. prayed for

  776. is attractive

  777. to those

  778. that God

  779. is working

  780. in,

  781. right?

  782. To the

  783. outside

  784. world.

  785. We are

  786. to be

  787. the light

  788. of the

  789. world.

  790. Jesus said

  791. that you

  792. are the

  793. light of

  794. the world.

  795. A city

  796. on a hill

  797. cannot be

  798. hidden,

  799. right?

  800. Let your

  801. light shine

  802. before men

  803. that they

  804. may see

  805. your good

  806. works

  807. and glorify

  808. your Father

  809. who is in

  810. heaven.

  811. Right?

  812. So that's

  813. one goal,

  814. one result

  815. of true

  816. unity is

  817. it's evangelistic.

  818. Jesus says

  819. that,

  820. that they

  821. would,

  822. a world

  823. may see

  824. and know

  825. me,

  826. right?

  827. And then

  828. underneath

  829. this also,

  830. another result

  831. of true

  832. unity.

  833. I love

  834. this part.

  835. In Christ

  836. we have

  837. all things

  838. in common.

  839. Alright?

  840. Many of you

  841. can give

  842. testimony to

  843. this,

  844. that Christ

  845. has a

  846. tendency

  847. to bring

  848. together

  849. people who

  850. otherwise would

  851. never be

  852. around each

  853. other.

  854. Like,

  855. very different

  856. types of

  857. people.

  858. All kind

  859. of categories

  860. of people.

  861. It doesn't

  862. matter what

  863. social background

  864. you have,

  865. what ethnic

  866. background you

  867. have,

  868. Christ brings

  869. us together

  870. into his

  871. church,

  872. his family.

  873. And that

  874. thought of

  875. like whenever

  876. you encounter

  877. another believer,

  878. some of you

  879. have traveled

  880. far outside

  881. the U.S.

  882. and it

  883. feels a little

  884. isolating and

  885. you don't

  886. really feel

  887. like people,

  888. anybody around

  889. you knows

  890. that you're

  891. a Christian

  892. and you're

  893. kind of

  894. alone.

  895. And then

  896. you bump

  897. into somebody

  898. else who

  899. is and you

  900. just immediately

  901. have this

  902. like,

  903. yes,

  904. they are

  905. in the

  906. faith.

  907. They are

  908. a brother

  909. or a

  910. sister.

  911. And you

  912. immediately

  913. have this

  914. connection

  915. with them.

  916. But God

  917. brings together

  918. all types

  919. of different

  920. people that

  921. otherwise would

  922. not spend

  923. any time

  924. together,

  925. probably.

  926. Growing up,

  927. I was a

  928. part of

  929. like the

  930. good old

  931. boy country

  932. crowd that

  933. drove trucks,

  934. deer hunted,

  935. and fished.

  936. And I

  937. love to see

  938. just that

  939. over the

  940. years,

  941. that kind

  942. of means

  943. less and

  944. less to

  945. me.

  946. It's more

  947. as I've

  948. seen people

  949. that have

  950. been saved

  951. by Christ

  952. and I have

  953. more in

  954. common with

  955. them than

  956. even my own

  957. family sometimes.

  958. And we

  959. have,

  960. I have a

  961. good buddy

  962. of mine who

  963. is sort

  964. of a punk

  965. rocker

  966. background.

  967. Right?

  968. And I

  969. would have

  970. never hung

  971. out with

  972. that guy

  973. outside of

  974. Christ.

  975. And brothers

  976. and sisters

  977. from every

  978. nation,

  979. every tribe,

  980. every tongue,

  981. Christ brings

  982. us together

  983. and we have

  984. all things

  985. in common.

  986. Right?

  987. That's the

  988. answer to all

  989. the stuff you

  990. see in our

  991. world right

  992. now.

  993. The gospel.

  994. Christ.

  995. The church.

  996. This brings

  997. us to point

  998. number two.

  999. Point number

  1000. two.

  1001. Jesus

  1002. prays

  1003. for the

  1004. future

  1005. glory

  1006. of

  1007. believers.

  1008. He

  1009. prays

  1010. for the

  1011. future

  1012. glory

  1013. of

  1014. believers.

  1015. And then

  1016. two parts

  1017. underneath

  1018. that.

  1019. In one

  1020. way,

  1021. part A,

  1022. the fellowship

  1023. and focus

  1024. of our

  1025. future

  1026. glory.

  1027. Look at

  1028. verse 24.

  1029. He says,

  1030. Father,

  1031. I desire

  1032. that they

  1033. also,

  1034. whom you

  1035. have given

  1036. me,

  1037. may be

  1038. with me

  1039. where I

  1040. am,

  1041. to see

  1042. my glory

  1043. that you

  1044. have given

  1045. me because

  1046. you loved

  1047. me before

  1048. the foundation

  1049. of the

  1050. world.

  1051. Such a

  1052. beautiful

  1053. picture here.

  1054. At the

  1055. outset of

  1056. Christ's

  1057. prayer,

  1058. right,

  1059. he asked

  1060. the Father

  1061. to restore

  1062. him to

  1063. the place

  1064. of glory

  1065. that he

  1066. enjoyed with

  1067. the Father

  1068. before

  1069. creation.

  1070. So you

  1071. get this

  1072. glimpse of

  1073. what happened

  1074. before the

  1075. world was

  1076. created.

  1077. Christ

  1078. dwelt in

  1079. perfect joy

  1080. and satisfaction

  1081. with the

  1082. Father,

  1083. right,

  1084. before anything

  1085. ever was

  1086. created.

  1087. That's a

  1088. beautiful picture

  1089. of what

  1090. existed.

  1091. If you look

  1092. at verse 5

  1093. of chapter 17,

  1094. just kind of

  1095. looking back a

  1096. little bit,

  1097. he kind of

  1098. says the

  1099. same thing.

  1100. He says,

  1101. Now,

  1102. Father,

  1103. glorify me

  1104. in your

  1105. own presence

  1106. with the

  1107. glory that

  1108. I had

  1109. with you

  1110. before the

  1111. world

  1112. existed.

  1113. It's an

  1114. amazing

  1115. thought.

  1116. Think and

  1117. ponder that.

  1118. Right?

  1119. Something I

  1120. want you

  1121. to think

  1122. of just

  1123. right now,

  1124. think about

  1125. one of the

  1126. most beautiful

  1127. scenes that

  1128. you've ever

  1129. seen with

  1130. your eyes,

  1131. or one of

  1132. the most

  1133. beautiful

  1134. noises you

  1135. ever heard

  1136. with your

  1137. ears.

  1138. It might

  1139. be like a

  1140. sunset over

  1141. the mountains

  1142. or the

  1143. ocean.

  1144. It might

  1145. be hearing

  1146. a great

  1147. musical

  1148. performance

  1149. or a

  1150. monumental

  1151. sporting

  1152. event.

  1153. And notice

  1154. that in

  1155. those moments,

  1156. things that

  1157. just sort

  1158. of take

  1159. your breath

  1160. away,

  1161. you're not

  1162. thinking about

  1163. yourself at

  1164. all.

  1165. You're carried

  1166. outside of

  1167. yourself.

  1168. Right?

  1169. Two things

  1170. kind of

  1171. happened during

  1172. that time.

  1173. Something in

  1174. us longs for

  1175. another person to

  1176. be there with

  1177. us to share

  1178. that rich

  1179. experience.

  1180. You ever

  1181. thought that?

  1182. Like,

  1183. man,

  1184. I wish that

  1185. person was

  1186. here to see

  1187. this.

  1188. And typically,

  1189. the ones that

  1190. we love the

  1191. most,

  1192. typically the

  1193. people that are

  1194. closest to us,

  1195. who want

  1196. them to be

  1197. there to

  1198. behold this

  1199. beautiful thing

  1200. with us.

  1201. This,

  1202. in a small

  1203. way,

  1204. is what I

  1205. believe Christ

  1206. is saying,

  1207. a small way,

  1208. that He

  1209. desires for

  1210. us to be

  1211. with Him

  1212. where He is

  1213. so that we

  1214. may behold

  1215. His glory,

  1216. the glory that

  1217. existed before

  1218. the world

  1219. was created.

  1220. Not because

  1221. He needs

  1222. us,

  1223. just because

  1224. He's gracious,

  1225. just because

  1226. He wants us

  1227. to be in

  1228. His presence.

  1229. He chose

  1230. to set

  1231. His love

  1232. upon us.

  1233. Right?

  1234. So that's

  1235. one thing.

  1236. We want

  1237. for other

  1238. people to

  1239. be there.

  1240. Secondly,

  1241. we want

  1242. to not

  1243. just look

  1244. at something

  1245. that's

  1246. magnificent.

  1247. We actually

  1248. want to

  1249. dive into it.

  1250. We don't

  1251. want to

  1252. just stare

  1253. at it

  1254. from a

  1255. distance.

  1256. We want

  1257. to go

  1258. and actually

  1259. be a part

  1260. of what

  1261. we see.

  1262. We want

  1263. to be in

  1264. the middle

  1265. of it.

  1266. I remember

  1267. the first

  1268. time I

  1269. ever saw

  1270. the Scottish

  1271. Highlands

  1272. in 2009.

  1273. I was

  1274. on a

  1275. bus.

  1276. As soon

  1277. as I

  1278. saw it,

  1279. I was

  1280. like,

  1281. oh my

  1282. gosh,

  1283. that is

  1284. beautiful.

  1285. I was

  1286. like,

  1287. I wanted

  1288. to jump

  1289. through the

  1290. window to

  1291. go out

  1292. and get

  1293. into it.

  1294. I want

  1295. to drop

  1296. me off

  1297. right here

  1298. and I

  1299. will go

  1300. backpacking

  1301. all day

  1302. by myself.

  1303. I didn't

  1304. just want

  1305. to look

  1306. at it

  1307. from a

  1308. distance.

  1309. I remember

  1310. in 1995

  1311. a little

  1312. boy listening

  1313. to the

  1314. radio about

  1315. the Braves

  1316. World Series

  1317. and it

  1318. made me

  1319. go to bed.

  1320. I couldn't

  1321. stay up

  1322. and watch

  1323. it.

  1324. So,

  1325. the whole

  1326. like,

  1327. Braves

  1328. win,

  1329. Braves

  1330. win.

  1331. I wanted

  1332. to be

  1333. a part

  1334. of that

  1335. celebration.

  1336. I wanted

  1337. to be

  1338. in the

  1339. middle

  1340. of it.

  1341. C.S.

  1342. Lewis

  1343. wrote,

  1344. we do

  1345. not want

  1346. merely

  1347. to see

  1348. beauty,

  1349. though God

  1350. knows even

  1351. that is

  1352. bounty enough.

  1353. We want

  1354. something else

  1355. which we can

  1356. hardly put

  1357. into words,

  1358. to be

  1359. united with

  1360. the beauty

  1361. that we

  1362. see,

  1363. to pass

  1364. into it,

  1365. to receive

  1366. it into

  1367. ourselves

  1368. and to

  1369. bathe in

  1370. it and

  1371. to become

  1372. a part

  1373. of it.

  1374. And so,

  1375. when we

  1376. leave this

  1377. world and

  1378. go and

  1379. behold God's

  1380. glory and

  1381. the glory

  1382. of Christ,

  1383. we want

  1384. to see it

  1385. and be a

  1386. part of it.

  1387. We want

  1388. to be in

  1389. the middle

  1390. of that

  1391. glory.

  1392. There's no

  1393. better thing

  1394. in this

  1395. world.

  1396. Nothing can

  1397. compare to

  1398. the glory

  1399. that we

  1400. will behold

  1401. one day.

  1402. Paul wrote,

  1403. quoting Isaiah,

  1404. what no

  1405. eye has

  1406. seen,

  1407. nor ear

  1408. has heard,

  1409. nor the

  1410. heart of

  1411. man

  1412. imagined,

  1413. what God

  1414. has prepared

  1415. for those

  1416. who love

  1417. him.

  1418. Amazing

  1419. thing.

  1420. So,

  1421. a focus

  1422. of fellowship

  1423. and future

  1424. glory is what

  1425. we see

  1426. in these

  1427. verses.

  1428. And secondly,

  1429. underneath

  1430. this part,

  1431. is we

  1432. will enjoy

  1433. unhindered

  1434. fellowship

  1435. with God.

  1436. Unhindered

  1437. fellowship

  1438. with God.

  1439. Think about

  1440. the times

  1441. where you

  1442. have just

  1443. enjoyed

  1444. being in

  1445. the presence

  1446. of God.

  1447. Like some

  1448. of the sweetest

  1449. moments of

  1450. fellowship,

  1451. when you

  1452. were in

  1453. prayer,

  1454. when you

  1455. were in

  1456. God's

  1457. word,

  1458. when you

  1459. were just

  1460. alone

  1461. somewhere,

  1462. or in

  1463. the presence

  1464. of his

  1465. people.

  1466. And it

  1467. just seemed

  1468. like in

  1469. that moment

  1470. you just

  1471. had a

  1472. real sense

  1473. of God's

  1474. presence

  1475. with you.

  1476. In an

  1477. abnormal

  1478. way,

  1479. almost.

  1480. You felt

  1481. his nearness

  1482. to you,

  1483. thinking about

  1484. how he

  1485. saved you

  1486. from your

  1487. sin,

  1488. giving you

  1489. life,

  1490. enjoying

  1491. gratitude,

  1492. or just

  1493. filling

  1494. your soul.

  1495. You just

  1496. want to

  1497. say,

  1498. pause.

  1499. I just

  1500. want to

  1501. stay

  1502. right here,

  1503. right?

  1504. But then

  1505. something

  1506. happens.

  1507. Interference

  1508. usually steps

  1509. in.

  1510. You get

  1511. hungry,

  1512. you get

  1513. tired,

  1514. hangry for

  1515. some of

  1516. you.

  1517. Somebody

  1518. knocks on

  1519. your door,

  1520. you get

  1521. an annoying

  1522. text message.

  1523. Whatever it

  1524. may be,

  1525. there's moments

  1526. that just

  1527. interrupt us.

  1528. They pull

  1529. us away

  1530. from those

  1531. depths of

  1532. fellowship.

  1533. We're kind

  1534. of dragged

  1535. down from

  1536. heaven,

  1537. as it were,

  1538. back to

  1539. earth,

  1540. back to

  1541. just being

  1542. here.

  1543. And it

  1544. feels like

  1545. we only

  1546. can get

  1547. so close

  1548. in this

  1549. life.

  1550. But,

  1551. when we

  1552. die,

  1553. when we

  1554. shed this

  1555. weak,

  1556. mortal

  1557. flesh,

  1558. and it

  1559. passes

  1560. away,

  1561. we

  1562. will

  1563. have

  1564. uninterrupted,

  1565. unhindered

  1566. fellowship

  1567. with Christ

  1568. and the

  1569. Father.

  1570. Right?

  1571. Eternity

  1572. will not

  1573. be spent

  1574. with human

  1575. beings

  1576. paying back

  1577. the debt

  1578. that we

  1579. owe God,

  1580. because that

  1581. is impossible.

  1582. The grace

  1583. that we

  1584. have been

  1585. saved,

  1586. we can

  1587. never pay

  1588. it back.

  1589. But for

  1590. all eternity,

  1591. we will be

  1592. the beneficiaries

  1593. of God's

  1594. kindness.

  1595. Right?

  1596. Christ

  1597. has done

  1598. this,

  1599. Ephesians

  1600. 2,

  1601. 7,

  1602. that in

  1603. the coming

  1604. ages,

  1605. He might

  1606. show us

  1607. the

  1608. immeasurable

  1609. riches of

  1610. His grace

  1611. and kindness

  1612. towards us

  1613. in Christ

  1614. Jesus.

  1615. Some of

  1616. you,

  1617. many of

  1618. you,

  1619. who have

  1620. children or

  1621. grandchildren,

  1622. know that at

  1623. a certain

  1624. age,

  1625. you do

  1626. something

  1627. goofy or

  1628. fun,

  1629. and they

  1630. like it,

  1631. and then

  1632. what do

  1633. they tell

  1634. you?

  1635. Do it

  1636. again.

  1637. Do it

  1638. again.

  1639. Even like

  1640. for an

  1641. hour,

  1642. you just

  1643. do the

  1644. same thing,

  1645. over and

  1646. over again,

  1647. and they

  1648. never get

  1649. tired of

  1650. it.

  1651. Boredom

  1652. is something

  1653. that fallen

  1654. creatures

  1655. experience.

  1656. Right?

  1657. But the

  1658. newness of

  1659. standing in

  1660. Christ's

  1661. presence

  1662. forever will

  1663. never get

  1664. old.

  1665. We will

  1666. enjoy that

  1667. unhindered

  1668. fellowship with

  1669. God,

  1670. on and

  1671. on.

  1672. Debating

  1673. whether to

  1674. read this

  1675. to you or

  1676. not,

  1677. I'm not

  1678. usually a

  1679. fan of

  1680. long quotes

  1681. during

  1682. sermons,

  1683. but I'm

  1684. going to

  1685. read this

  1686. one to

  1687. you really

  1688. quickly.

  1689. Spurgeon

  1690. wrote a

  1691. sermon on

  1692. John 17

  1693. and he

  1694. says,

  1695. I doubt

  1696. not that

  1697. there are

  1698. many joys

  1699. in heaven

  1700. which will

  1701. amplify the

  1702. grand joy

  1703. with which

  1704. we will

  1705. have.

  1706. I feel

  1707. confident

  1708. that meeting

  1709. of departed

  1710. friends,

  1711. the society

  1712. of apostles,

  1713. priests,

  1714. and prophets,

  1715. and martyrs

  1716. will amplify

  1717. the joy of

  1718. the redeemed.

  1719. So in

  1720. other words,

  1721. I'm sure

  1722. there are

  1723. many things

  1724. in heaven

  1725. that are

  1726. going to

  1727. help bring

  1728. us joy.

  1729. Good things.

  1730. But still,

  1731. the Son

  1732. that will

  1733. give them

  1734. the greatest

  1735. light to

  1736. their joy

  1737. will be

  1738. the fact

  1739. that they

  1740. are with

  1741. Jesus

  1742. Christ.

  1743. And behold

  1744. his face.

  1745. And now,

  1746. there may be

  1747. other employments

  1748. in heaven,

  1749. but that

  1750. mentioned in

  1751. this text

  1752. is the chief

  1753. one,

  1754. John 17,

  1755. that they

  1756. may behold

  1757. my glory.

  1758. Let us

  1759. pass in

  1760. a panorama

  1761. before your

  1762. eyes with

  1763. great scenes

  1764. of this

  1765. glory that

  1766. you will

  1767. behold after

  1768. death.

  1769. The moment

  1770. the soul

  1771. departs from

  1772. this body,

  1773. it will

  1774. behold the

  1775. glory of

  1776. Christ.

  1777. The glory

  1778. of his

  1779. person will

  1780. be the

  1781. first thing

  1782. that will

  1783. arrest your

  1784. attention.

  1785. There he

  1786. will sit

  1787. in the midst

  1788. of the

  1789. throne,

  1790. and our

  1791. eyes will

  1792. be first

  1793. caught with

  1794. his glory

  1795. of his

  1796. appearance.

  1797. Oh,

  1798. how will

  1799. the Christian

  1800. stop at

  1801. the foot

  1802. of his

  1803. master's

  1804. throne and

  1805. look upward?

  1806. And if

  1807. there could

  1808. be tears

  1809. in heaven,

  1810. tears of

  1811. rich delight

  1812. would roll

  1813. down his

  1814. cheeks when

  1815. he looks

  1816. and sees

  1817. the man

  1818. enthroned

  1819. and says

  1820. to him,

  1821. how often

  1822. I used

  1823. to sing

  1824. about you

  1825. on the

  1826. earth.

  1827. Crown him

  1828. with many

  1829. crowns.

  1830. King of

  1831. kings and

  1832. lord of

  1833. lords.

  1834. This

  1835. version ends

  1836. like by

  1837. writing this

  1838. poem.

  1839. Millions of

  1840. years are

  1841. wandering

  1842. eyes.

  1843. Shall our

  1844. savior's

  1845. beauties

  1846. rove.

  1847. And

  1848. myriads of

  1849. ages will

  1850. adore the

  1851. wonders of

  1852. his love.

  1853. So it'll

  1854. be a joy

  1855. that is

  1856. unceasing

  1857. in heaven.

  1858. We'll never

  1859. be bored

  1860. beholding the

  1861. glory of the

  1862. father and

  1863. the son.

  1864. And

  1865. then lastly,

  1866. landing the

  1867. plane here

  1868. is part

  1869. B.

  1870. There will

  1871. be a

  1872. foretaste

  1873. of future

  1874. glory.

  1875. Look at

  1876. verse 25.

  1877. Oh,

  1878. righteous

  1879. father,

  1880. even though

  1881. the world

  1882. does not

  1883. know you,

  1884. I know

  1885. you,

  1886. and these

  1887. know that

  1888. you have

  1889. sent me.

  1890. I have

  1891. made known

  1892. to them

  1893. your name,

  1894. and I will

  1895. continue to

  1896. make it

  1897. known,

  1898. that the

  1899. love which

  1900. you have

  1901. loved me

  1902. may be

  1903. in them,

  1904. and I

  1905. in them.

  1906. So beautiful

  1907. words.

  1908. Jesus says,

  1909. righteous

  1910. father,

  1911. expresses this

  1912. great

  1913. confidence

  1914. that his

  1915. father hears

  1916. his prayer,

  1917. and he

  1918. will fulfill

  1919. his request.

  1920. He says

  1921. about this

  1922. righteous

  1923. God,

  1924. a fallen

  1925. world does

  1926. not know

  1927. Christ,

  1928. it does

  1929. not know

  1930. God,

  1931. but the

  1932. son knows

  1933. God,

  1934. and the

  1935. son has

  1936. made him

  1937. known to

  1938. us.

  1939. Jesus has

  1940. shown us

  1941. who the

  1942. father is.

  1943. The moment

  1944. that we

  1945. are born

  1946. again,

  1947. we have

  1948. fellowship

  1949. with God,

  1950. and we

  1951. continue to

  1952. throughout

  1953. the duration

  1954. of our

  1955. lives,

  1956. and

  1957. sanctification,

  1958. but knowing

  1959. Christ,

  1960. experiencing

  1961. his glory,

  1962. and his

  1963. fellowship,

  1964. starts now.

  1965. We get

  1966. glimpses,

  1967. we get

  1968. tastes,

  1969. but it

  1970. starts now.

  1971. Jesus said,

  1972. I have

  1973. come that

  1974. they may

  1975. have life

  1976. and have

  1977. it abundantly.

  1978. Having

  1979. this life

  1980. that is

  1981. rooted in

  1982. fellowship

  1983. with Christ.

  1984. So even

  1985. now,

  1986. with all the

  1987. distractions,

  1988. and all the

  1989. stuff,

  1990. even in

  1991. this moment,

  1992. right,

  1993. we can

  1994. enjoy the

  1995. presence of

  1996. Christ with

  1997. us.

  1998. We may

  1999. get a start

  2000. on eternity

  2001. now,

  2002. but one

  2003. day,

  2004. Paul says

  2005. that we

  2006. will enjoy

  2007. the

  2008. unsearchable

  2009. riches

  2010. of Christ.

  2011. So be

  2012. thankful for

  2013. these times

  2014. of fellowship

  2015. that you

  2016. have now.

  2017. They're just

  2018. a foretaste

  2019. of what

  2020. is to

  2021. come.

  2022. So taste

  2023. and see

  2024. that the

  2025. Lord is

  2026. good.

  2027. So just

  2028. a beautiful

  2029. picture of

  2030. what Christ

  2031. prayed for

  2032. you,

  2033. for me,

  2034. and for

  2035. every believer

  2036. that followed

  2037. after he

  2038. left the

  2039. earth,

  2040. that we

  2041. would be

  2042. one,

  2043. that we

  2044. would behold

  2045. his glory

  2046. one day.

  2047. So just

  2048. join me in

  2049. a word of

  2050. prayer.
