  1. It's nice to be with you this morning. Please open up your copy of God's Word to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today's study will be Romans chapter 4, verses 1-12.

    Romans 4:1–12

  3. As we have studied Paul's letter to the Romans, it has been a concern that you all may grow tired of hearing Paul's argument that we are justified by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ.

  4. Alone? I hope not.

  5. But Paul makes his case in mere minutes in the opening chapters of this book if we were to read it straight through.

  6. But as we slow down to consider it in small bites, the lesson gets drawn out.

  7. Two weeks ago, I preached what I felt was the necessary introduction as we began our study of chapter 4,

  8. and we thought together about the five solas of the Reformation, Latin terms that were used in that day.

  9. The Bible alone is God's final authority, sola scriptura.

  10. And it is on its pages that we learn that we are saved by God's grace alone, sola gratia,

  11. through faith alone, sola fide, in Jesus Christ alone, solus Christus,

  12. and this salvation and all things exist for the glory of God alone, soli Deo Gloria.

  13. We gave particular attention to the doctrine of sola scriptura those two weeks ago because I want you to want to stick to the text,

  14. to really settle into our studies of long books like the book of Romans,

  15. to relish in its teaching and trust that God knew what he was doing as these books were penned

  16. and knows what he was doing as we open them and take them piece by piece together.

  17. As we begin chapter 4, Paul continues to draw out his theme of justification by grace alone,

  18. through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone,

  19. with a particular attention in these first 12 verses to faith alone, sola fide.

  20. Notice the beginning of verse 1, chapter 4.

  21. He then says,

  22. What then shall we say?

  23. Let me draw you back just a little bit to Romans chapter 3, verse 21 and 22.

    Romans 3:21

  24. And in response to the argument he's been making,

  25. this what then shall we say in chapter 4 and verse 1,

  26. Romans 3, 21 and 22,

  27. But now, the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law.

  28. Although the law and the prophets bear witness to it,

  29. the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

  30. For there is no distinction.

  31. So whether Jew or Gentile, just everyone not Jewish,

  32. we are justified, which means to be declared righteous through faith.

  33. We are justified through faith, and through faith alone.

  34. Paul will continue to make this point in the first 12 verses of chapter 4.

  35. Now, normally, we tend to follow a pattern in our preaching,

  36. which is a very old pattern of preaching.

  37. Many of the great Puritan preachers followed this pattern,

  38. and it goes like this.

  39. Exegesis, that is, explain what the text says.

  40. Doctrine, what doctrines does the text teach,

  41. and then application.

  42. So what do we do with these doctrines?

  43. Exegesis, doctrine, application.

  44. They would often title the sections of their sermons in this way,

  45. and they would announce them as they came to them.

  46. They would say, here is the exegesis, and go on to explain.

  47. And then they would say, here is the doctrine, and so forth.

  48. Now, we don't announce the sections like that as we preach,

  49. but we normally follow a very similar pattern.

  50. Now that I've told you about it, you're probably going to notice it quite often.

  51. Exegesis, doctrine, application.

  52. But sometimes that happens for each point of the sermon,

  53. so often it'll go exegesis, doctrine, application, exegesis, doctrine, application,

  54. and so forth for however many points there may be for that day's text.

  55. Now today, though, I'm going to mix the outline up a little bit.

  56. I have already stated the doctrine.

  57. We are justified through faith alone.

  58. That is the doctrine presented in this text, sola fide.

  59. To be justified means that God has declared you morally perfect.

  60. We use that term righteous.

  61. He's declared you morally perfect.

  62. Roman 3.26 states that God is just

  63. and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus Christ.

  64. So it is God who does the declaration.

  65. You cannot declare yourself morally perfect.

  66. And it is moral perfection that we are concerned with here.

  67. This is not physical perfection.

  68. People spend a lot of time pursuing that, whatever that means.

  69. Or professional perfection, or any other way you may define perfection.

  70. Here we are talking about the only thing that will matter in the end.

  71. Moral perfection.

  72. Have you kept God's law?

  73. So this is the doctrine.

  74. We are justified through faith alone.

  75. So I now want to state the application.

  76. And then I promise we will exegete the text.

  77. So in brief, application as we approach these verses together.

  78. Today you find yourself in one of either two categories.

  79. Most simply, one of two categories.

  80. First, today, you are either not justified.

  81. Or, I hope you can guess it, justified.

  82. You have either not been declared by God to be righteous, morally perfect.

  83. Or you have been declared by God to be justified, morally perfect.

  84. If you are not declared righteous by God, then when you pass from this life and stand before him,

  85. he will cast you forever from his presence to a place of eternal punishment.

  86. And the Bible says much about this, and oh, is there so much that could be said here.

  87. But I simply this morning want you to hear.

  88. Your soul is in a desperate state now and will be forever if you do not place saving faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  89. You are guilty and you will stand in judgment.

  90. You are guilty and you must be forgiven if you will avoid this eternal punishment.

  91. God in his great loving kindness has made it possible for your sins to be forgotten.

  92. For you, excuse me, to be declared righteous.

  93. I believe that as you have gathered with us today, that God is doing a work in your life.

  94. I just say it matter of factly.

  95. There are better places to be if you care nothing about the eternal state of your soul.

  96. If you are living for this life, there are more fun things to be doing.

  97. But I hope that you are concerned about the eternal state of your soul.

  98. And that I believe that God is at work bringing you to this place on this day.

  99. He's either given you parents who love you enough to bring you to church or a friend that has invited you.

  100. Or he has compelled you to come on your own.

  101. Any number of possible other reasons exist.

  102. How it is you found yourself sitting and listening now to God's word.

  103. But you are not here by accident.

  104. Hear God's word to you this day.

  105. Turn from your sin.

  106. Flee to Christ.

  107. Let this be the day of your salvation.

  108. If you are declared righteous,

  109. I believe this represents the majority of people who are here with us today.

  110. If you are declared morally perfect by God,

  111. you also need to heed the words of today's text.

  112. Because perhaps you need to be reminded that if you are justified,

  113. then you are justified by grace alone through faith alone.

  114. We can be declared righteous and heir in two ways as we respond to this declaration.

  115. We can first live as if the way we live doesn't matter at all.

  116. The argument goes something like,

  117. I am saved by faith alone.

  118. So how I live is inconsequential as long as I have faith.

  119. There's a lot of people in our day that live in this way.

  120. Or secondly, and I think this is typically more true of us,

  121. I know can tend to be true of me.

  122. We can live as if we began by faith,

  123. but now we must be continually justified by our works.

  124. I forget sometimes.

  125. And it is subtle and it creeps up

  126. that I'm justified, declared righteous by God.

  127. My salvation, my eternal standing with God,

  128. does not depend on me,

  129. but on Him and the work that He has accomplished.

  130. Now both errors stem from forgetfulness

  131. and a misunderstanding of the difference

  132. between justification and sanctification.

  133. Both justification and sanctification

  134. are brought about by grace alone through faith alone.

  135. God gives to us His Spirit

  136. and declares us righteous in justification.

  137. He removes the guilt of our sin

  138. as He punished it in Christ as He hung on the cross.

  139. He grants us the moral perfection of Christ

  140. that was gained by His sinless life.

  141. I like it when I hear someone say,

  142. we are saved by works but not our own,

  143. the works of another.

  144. And they're talking about Jesus.

  145. Jesus' perfect life.

  146. When we are justified,

  147. we become His.

  148. He makes us His own.

  149. In sanctification,

  150. we are brought degree by degree,

  151. bit by bit,

  152. into conformity with who He has declared us to be

  153. by the power of the Spirit within us.

  154. He has declared that we are something,

  155. and sanctification is bringing us to that reality.

  156. Declared, not made righteous,

  157. declared righteous.

  158. Sanctification is the process by which

  159. we are being made righteous,

  160. which will be fully realized

  161. when the Lord Jesus Christ returns.

  162. We will be finally made perfect

  163. in that very last day,

  164. but we are meant to be moving in degree toward it

  165. in between now and then.

  166. If we rightly understand this,

  167. then we will not live however we see fit,

  168. but we'll want to see our lives

  169. bear witness to our faith in Christ.

  170. Evidence what we believe to be true

  171. of who God has made us.

  172. If we rightly understand this,

  173. then we will,

  174. when we fail to live as God would have us,

  175. we will not lose all hope,

  176. but we'll repent and press on.

  177. I think many good,

  178. God-fearing Christians

  179. think they must have some

  180. long extended time of penitence.

  181. How sad must I feel

  182. over my sin when I sin?

  183. And this gets asked to me fairly regularly,

  184. and here's the answer.

  185. As long as it takes

  186. to get you back to the cross,

  187. back to the reality

  188. that if you are in Christ,

  189. then God has declared you righteous.

  190. Grieve over your sin,

  191. but only as long as it takes

  192. for you to go back to the truth

  193. of what God has accomplished

  194. on your behalf

  195. in the person and work

  196. of Jesus Christ.

  197. We cannot live as if how we live

  198. does not matter.

  199. Neither can we live

  200. as if how we live

  201. is all that matters.

  202. Beloved, let us not forget

  203. that we are saved

  204. by the works

  205. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  206. And that out of wonder,

  207. love, and awe,

  208. by grace alone,

  209. through faith alone,

  210. in the power of the Spirit,

  211. let us press on

  212. in holy endeavors.

  213. because of what God

  214. has done for us,

  215. sola fide,

  216. through faith,

  217. let us press on

  218. to holiness.

  219. holiness.

  220. This is the application.

  221. Now to our text

  222. and the exegesis.

  223. Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4:1–12

  224. verses 1 through 12.

  225. Beloved,

  226. this is God's word to us,

  227. written for his glory

  228. and our good,

  229. so we would all do well

  230. to listen to it

  231. in order to believe

  232. its promises

  233. and to obey its commands.

  234. What then shall we say

  235. was gained by Abraham,

  236. our forefather,

  237. according to the flesh?

  238. For if Abraham

  239. was justified by works,

  240. he has something

  241. to boast about,

  242. but not before God.

  243. For what does

  244. the scripture say?

  245. Abraham believed God

  246. and it was counted to him

  247. as righteousness.

  248. Now to the one who works,

  249. his wages are not counted

  250. as a gift,

  251. but as his due.

  252. And to the one

  253. who does not work,

  254. but believes in him

  255. who justifies the ungodly,

  256. his faith is counted

  257. as righteousness.

  258. Just as David also speaks

  259. of the blessing

  260. of the one to whom

  261. God counts righteousness

  262. apart from works.

  263. Blessed are those

  264. whose lawless deeds

  265. are forgiven

  266. and whose sins

  267. are covered.

  268. Blessed is the man

  269. against whom the Lord

  270. will not count his sin.

  271. Is this blessing

  272. then only for the circumcised

  273. or also for the uncircumcised?

  274. See there,

  275. Jew and Gentile.

  276. For we say that faith

  277. was counted to Abraham

  278. as righteousness.

  279. How then was it counted

  280. to him?

  281. Was it before

  282. or after

  283. he had been circumcised?

  284. It was not after,

  285. but before

  286. he was circumcised.

  287. He received

  288. the sign of circumcision

  289. as a seal

  290. of the righteousness

  291. that he had by faith

  292. while he was still

  293. uncircumcised.

  294. The purpose

  295. was to make him

  296. the father

  297. of all who believe

  298. without being circumcised

  299. so that righteousness

  300. would be counted

  301. to them as well

  302. and to make them

  303. the father

  304. of the circumcised

  305. who are not merely

  306. circumcised

  307. but who also walk

  308. in the footsteps

  309. of the faith

  310. that our father Abraham

  311. had before

  312. he was circumcised.

  313. So,

  314. simple outline for you

  315. this morning.

  316. Just three points.

  317. Number one,

  318. sola fide

  319. cries Abraham.

  320. Number two,

  321. sola fide

  322. cries David.

  323. And number three,

  324. sola fide

  325. cries the church.

  326. Number one,

  327. sola fide

  328. cries Abraham.

  329. Paul appeals

  330. to what the scripture

  331. has to say

  332. about Abraham.

  333. What shall we say

  334. was gained by Abraham?

  335. If Abraham was justified

  336. by works,

  337. he has something

  338. to boast about.

  339. But what does

  340. the scripture say?

  341. Verse three,

  342. Abraham believed God

  343. and was counted

  344. to him

  345. as righteousness.

  346. His belief,

  347. his faith

  348. was counted

  349. as righteousness.

  350. This is a quotation

  351. from Genesis chapter 15

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  352. and verse six.

  353. Paul's a good preacher.

  354. He is using

  355. the scripture

  356. to help people

  357. understand

  358. the plan

  359. of God.

  360. So I would

  361. like to ask you

  362. to join me

  363. in Genesis

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  364. chapter 15.

  365. I think it'll

  366. serve you well

  367. to see those

  368. first six verses

  369. and I'll draw

  370. your attention

  371. to some neighboring

  372. material as well.

  373. So as you're getting there,

  374. Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  375. it's back in

  376. Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  377. that God

  378. calls Abraham,

  379. then called

  380. Abram,

  381. and tells him,

  382. Abram,

  383. and I will make

  384. of you

  385. a great nation.

  386. This is the beginning

  387. of verse two

  388. of chapter 12

  389. and this will

  390. be tied together

  391. a bit later

  392. as I read to you

  393. from the book

  394. of Galatians.

  395. He there says,

  396. part of the promise

  397. he makes,

  398. God makes

  399. when he calls

  400. Abram,

  401. I will make of you

  402. a great nation.

  403. You will be the

  404. father

  405. of many

  406. people.

  407. back to

  408. Romans chapter

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  409. 4.

  410. And a number

  411. of things

  412. come to pass.

  413. If you're not

  414. familiar with the

  415. story,

  416. you should read

  417. the story,

  418. the things that

  419. are happening.

  420. Some significant

  421. things happen

  422. in between

  423. chapter 12

  424. and chapter

  425. 15.

  426. There we read,

  427. after these things,

  428. beginning of

  429. chapter 15,

  430. the word of the

  431. Lord came to

  432. Abram in a vision.

  433. Fear not,

  434. Abram,

  435. I am your shield,

  436. your reward

  437. shall be very

  438. great.

  439. But Abram

  440. said,

  441. O Lord God,

  442. what will you

  443. give me?

  444. For I continue

  445. childless,

  446. and the heir of

  447. my house is

  448. Eleazar of

  449. Damascus.

  450. And Abram

  451. said,

  452. Behold,

  453. you have given

  454. me no offspring,

  455. and a member

  456. of my household

  457. will be my

  458. heir.

  459. He's saying,

  460. how am I going

  461. to be the

  462. father of

  463. nations?

  464. How is this

  465. possible?

  466. I don't have

  467. a son.

  468. Verse 4,

  469. And behold,

  470. the word of the

  471. Lord came to

  472. him,

  473. this man shall

  474. not be your

  475. heir,

  476. your very own

  477. son shall be

  478. your heir.

  479. And he brought

  480. him outside

  481. and said,

  482. look toward

  483. heaven and

  484. number the

  485. stars if you

  486. are able to

  487. number them.

  488. Then he said

  489. to him,

  490. so shall your

  491. offspring be.

  492. Now,

  493. Abram is very

  494. old at this

  495. point.

  496. If my memory

  497. is serving me

  498. correct,

  499. someone's going

  500. to come up and

  501. tell me that I'm

  502. wrong at the

  503. end of this,

  504. I'm sure.

  505. I believe he's

  506. 87.

  507. Ben.

  508. Something like

  509. that.

  510. He's in his

  511. 80s,

  512. to be sure.

  513. His wife,

  514. Sarah,

  515. is yet to be

  516. pregnant.

  517. So,

  518. none of this

  519. has actually

  520. happened yet.

  521. In a vision,

  522. he goes out

  523. and God

  524. says to him,

  525. look toward

  526. heaven and

  527. number the

  528. stars.

  529. If you're

  530. able to

  531. number them,

  532. so shall

  533. your offspring

  534. be.

  535. And then

  536. verse 6,

  537. which is what

  538. Paul is

  539. citing in

  540. Romans chapter

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  541. 4,

  542. and he

  543. believed

  544. the Lord.

  545. He believed

  546. the promise,

  547. and God

  548. counted it

  549. to him

  550. as

  551. righteousness.

  552. Now,

  553. it is not

  554. until

  555. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  556. 17

  557. when

  558. circumcision

  559. comes up,

  560. and this is

  561. at least

  562. 13 years

  563. later.

  564. At least.

  565. Probably more,

  566. but it's at least

  567. 13 years

  568. later.

  569. So,

  570. Abram's faith

  571. is counted to

  572. him as

  573. righteousness

  574. long before

  575. the circumcision.

  576. So,

  577. what is it

  578. that Abram

  579. has to boast

  580. in?

  581. Nothing.

  582. There's nothing

  583. to boast in

  584. at all.

  585. Right?

  586. He believed

  587. the promise

  588. of God,

  589. and God

  590. declared him

  591. morally

  592. perfect.

  593. And Paul's

  594. just going on

  595. to explain

  596. that back

  597. in Romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  598. chapter 4.

  599. Now,

  600. to the one

  601. who works,

  602. he's reasoning

  603. with us.

  604. If you work,

  605. then you're

  606. due your

  607. wages.

  608. It's good

  609. to thank

  610. your boss

  611. for your

  612. paycheck.

  613. It's not a

  614. bad thing

  615. to do,

  616. but I hope

  617. that you

  618. earned

  619. your paycheck.

  620. You traded

  621. labor for

  622. those wages.

  623. They're not

  624. counted as a

  625. gift,

  626. he says in

  627. verse 4,

  628. but as

  629. your due.

  630. Of course.

  631. Typically,

  632. a good boss

  633. will say that,

  634. oh,

  635. no,

  636. thank you

  637. for working.

  638. I appreciate

  639. that.

  640. But the

  641. one who

  642. does not

  643. work,

  644. but believes

  645. in him

  646. who justifies

  647. the ungodly,

  648. his faith

  649. is counted

  650. as righteousness.

  651. So we are

  652. justified

  653. by faith

  654. alone.

  655. The point

  656. is being

  657. pressed.

  658. Paul writes

  659. later in

  660. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  661. chapter 2,

  662. verse 8 and

  663. 9,

  664. for by grace

  665. you have been

  666. saved through

  667. faith,

  668. and this is

  669. not your

  670. own doing,

  671. it is the

  672. gift of

  673. God,

  674. not a

  675. result of

  676. work,

  677. so that

  678. no one

  679. may boast.

  680. Beloved,

  681. if we have

  682. anything to boast

  683. in at all,

  684. it is what

  685. God has done

  686. on our behalf

  687. in the

  688. personal work

  689. of the

  690. Lord Jesus

  691. Christ.

  692. We are

  693. undeserving

  694. of the

  695. salvation

  696. that is

  697. ours.

  698. Why do

  699. we continue

  700. to act

  701. as if we

  702. must

  703. deserve it?

  704. As if we

  705. must earn

  706. it?

  707. May it

  708. never be.

  709. May we

  710. press on in

  711. holiness because

  712. of who God

  713. has declared

  714. us to be

  715. by grace

  716. through faith.

  717. So Abraham,

  718. the story of

  719. Abraham cries

  720. out to us,

  721. sola

  722. fide.

  723. But also

  724. David,

  725. Paul goes

  726. on in

  727. Romans 4

    Romans 4:6

  728. verse 6,

  729. just as

  730. David also,

  731. he is just

  732. reiterating,

  733. he is driving

  734. his point,

  735. he is piling

  736. up the

  737. argument,

  738. speaks of

  739. the blessing

  740. of the one

  741. to whom God

  742. counts righteous

  743. apart from

  744. works.

  745. Blessed are

  746. those whose

  747. lawless deeds

  748. are forgiven

  749. and whose

  750. sins are

  751. covered.

  752. Blessed is

  753. the man

  754. against whom

  755. the Lord

  756. will not

  757. count his

  758. sin.

  759. This is

  760. Psalm 32

    Psalms 32:1

  761. verses 1

  762. and the

  763. first half

  764. ish of

  765. verse 2.

  766. David had

  767. committed

  768. egregious

  769. sins.

  770. David had

  771. committed sins

  772. that there

  773. was no

  774. reparation for

  775. in the

  776. law.

  777. David had

  778. no hope

  779. of going

  780. to the

  781. temple

  782. and giving

  783. the forgiveness

  784. of his

  785. sins for

  786. the sins

  787. that he

  788. had

  789. committed.

  790. So what

  791. does he

  792. do?

  793. He throws

  794. himself on

  795. the mercy

  796. of God.

  797. By faith

  798. he believes

  799. that somehow

  800. God's promises

  801. will be true

  802. and his sins

  803. will be forgiven.

  804. Turn to

  805. Psalm 32.

  806. Let's read

  807. it in

  808. its

  809. entirety.

  810. When Paul

  811. cites these

  812. texts it's

  813. most likely

  814. his original

  815. hearers knew

  816. the psalm.

  817. He's pulling

  818. out a piece

  819. of it but

  820. they would

  821. have heard

  822. it in its

  823. entirety as

  824. this letter

  825. was read

  826. to them.

  827. Psalm 32.

  828. Read all

  829. 11 verses.

  830. Blessed is

  831. the one

  832. whose

  833. transgression

  834. is forgiven,

  835. whose sin

  836. is covered.

  837. Blessed is

  838. the man

  839. against whom

  840. the Lord

  841. counts no

  842. iniquity and

  843. in whose

  844. spirit

  845. there is

  846. no deceit.

  847. For when

  848. I kept

  849. silent my

  850. bones wasted

  851. away through

  852. my groaning

  853. all day

  854. long.

  855. For day

  856. and night

  857. your hand

  858. was heavy

  859. upon me.

  860. My strength

  861. was dried

  862. up as by

  863. the heat

  864. of summer.

  865. He's under

  866. the conviction

  867. of his

  868. sin.

  869. He's not

  870. crying out

  871. to God

  872. and it's

  873. destroying

  874. him.

  875. I acknowledge

  876. my sin

  877. to you,

  878. verse 5,

  879. and I

  880. did not

  881. cover

  882. my

  883. iniquity.

  884. I

  885. said,

  886. I will

  887. confess

  888. my

  889. transgressions

  890. to the

  891. Lord

  892. and you

  893. forgave

  894. the

  895. iniquity

  896. of my

  897. sin.

  898. Therefore,

  899. let everyone

  900. who is

  901. godly

  902. offer

  903. prayer to

  904. you at

  905. a time

  906. when you

  907. may be

  908. found.

  909. Surely,

  910. in the

  911. rush of

  912. great

  913. waters,

  914. they shall

  915. not

  916. reach him.

  917. He's

  918. talking there

  919. about

  920. judgment.

  921. Water

  922. was

  923. frightening

  924. to these

  925. people.

  926. In judgment

  927. we will

  928. not find

  929. him.

  930. Let us

  931. cry now

  932. while he

  933. is to

  934. be found.

  935. Verse 7,

  936. you are a

  937. hiding place

  938. for me.

  939. You preserve

  940. me from

  941. trouble.

  942. You surround

  943. me with

  944. shouts

  945. of deliverance.

  946. And then the

  947. voice of the

  948. psalm

  949. changes.

  950. It's now

  951. God speaking.

  952. He says,

  953. I will

  954. instruct

  955. you

  956. and teach

  957. you

  958. in the

  959. way

  960. you

  961. should

  962. go.

  963. I will

  964. counsel

  965. you

  966. with

  967. my

  968. eye

  969. upon

  970. you.

  971. Be

  972. not

  973. like

  974. a

  975. horse

  976. or a

  977. mule

  978. without

  979. understanding

  980. which

  981. must

  982. be

  983. curbed

  984. with

  985. bit

  986. and

  987. bridle

  988. or

  989. it

  990. will

  991. not

  992. stay

  993. near

  994. you.

  995. Do

  996. not

  997. be

  998. stubborn

  999. like

  1000. a

  1001. horse

  1002. or

  1003. a

  1004. mule.

  1005. Many

  1006. are

  1007. the

  1008. sorrows

  1009. of

  1010. the

  1011. wicked

  1012. but

  1013. steadfast

  1014. love

  1015. surrounds

  1016. the

  1017. one

  1018. who

  1019. trusts

  1020. in

  1021. the

  1022. Lord.

  1023. Be

  1024. glad

  1025. in

  1026. the

  1027. Lord

  1028. and

  1029. rejoice

  1030. O

  1031. righteous

  1032. and

  1033. shout

  1034. for

  1035. joy

  1036. all

  1037. you

  1038. upright

  1039. in

  1040. heart.

  1041. Right?

  1042. So

  1043. David

  1044. throws

  1045. himself

  1046. on

  1047. the

  1048. mercy

  1049. of

  1050. God

  1051. and

  1052. understands

  1053. that

  1054. as

  1055. he

  1056. does

  1057. so

  1058. God

  1059. will

  1060. forgive

  1061. his

  1062. sins.

  1063. It

  1064. has

  1065. been

  1066. repeatedly

  1067. stated

  1068. that

  1069. we

  1070. are

  1071. justified

  1072. by

  1073. grace

  1074. alone

  1075. through

  1076. faith

  1077. alone

  1078. and

  1079. Jesus

  1080. Christ

  1081. alone.

  1082. But

  1083. how

  1084. can

  1085. it

  1086. be

  1087. that

  1088. those

  1089. people

  1090. who

  1091. lived

  1092. before

  1093. Christ

  1094. were

  1095. justified?

  1096. How

  1097. is this

  1098. true of

  1099. Abraham

  1100. and of

  1101. David

  1102. and of

  1103. many

  1104. other

  1105. saints?

  1106. The

  1107. author of

  1108. Hebrews

  1109. gives us

  1110. some help

  1111. in this

  1112. matter

  1113. beginning

  1114. in the

  1115. beginning

  1116. of chapter

  1117. 11 of

  1118. Hebrews.

  1119. There he

  1120. says,

  1121. now faith

  1122. is the

  1123. assurance

  1124. of things

  1125. hoped

  1126. for.

  1127. The

  1128. conviction

  1129. of things

  1130. not

  1131. seen.

  1132. Wasn't

  1133. this

  1134. true of

  1135. Abraham

  1136. and of

  1137. David

  1138. and many

  1139. others

  1140. like them?

  1141. Verse 2

  1142. he says,

  1143. for by

  1144. it

  1145. the

  1146. people

  1147. of

  1148. old

  1149. received

  1150. their

  1151. commendation.

  1152. Then

  1153. verses 3

  1154. through 12

  1155. of

  1156. Hebrews

  1157. 11,

  1158. we see

  1159. a list

  1160. of

  1161. people

  1162. like

  1163. Abel

  1164. and

  1165. Noah

  1166. and

  1167. Enoch

  1168. and

  1169. Abraham.

  1170. And

  1171. then

  1172. in

  1173. verse

  1174. 13

  1175. he

  1176. says,

  1177. these

  1178. all

  1179. died

  1180. in

  1181. faith,

  1182. not

  1183. having

  1184. received

  1185. the

  1186. things

  1187. promised,

  1188. but

  1189. having

  1190. seen

  1191. them

  1192. and

  1193. greeted

  1194. them

  1195. from

  1196. afar,

  1197. and

  1198. having

  1199. acknowledged

  1200. that

  1201. they

  1202. were

  1203. strangers

  1204. and

  1205. exiles

  1206. on

  1207. the

  1208. earth.

  1209. For

  1210. people

  1211. who

  1212. speak

  1213. thus

  1214. make

  1215. it

  1216. clear

  1217. that

  1218. they

  1219. are

  1220. seeking

  1221. a

  1222. homeland.

  1223. If

  1224. they

  1225. had

  1226. been

  1227. thinking

  1228. of

  1229. that

  1230. land

  1231. from

  1232. which

  1233. they

  1234. had

  1235. gone

  1236. out,

  1237. they

  1238. would

  1239. have

  1240. had

  1241. opportunity

  1242. to

  1243. return.

  1244. But

  1245. as

  1246. it

  1247. is,

  1248. they

  1249. desire

  1250. a

  1251. better

  1252. country

  1253. that

  1254. is

  1255. a

  1256. heavenly

  1257. one.

  1258. Therefore

  1259. God

  1260. is not

  1261. ashamed

  1262. to be

  1263. called

  1264. their

  1265. God,

  1266. for

  1267. he

  1268. has

  1269. prepared

  1270. for

  1271. them

  1272. a

  1273. city.

  1274. Faith,

  1275. future

  1276. promise.

  1277. Then

  1278. in

  1279. verses

  1280. 17

  1281. through

  1282. 38

  1283. we

  1284. get

  1285. more

  1286. of

  1287. these

  1288. people

  1289. of

  1290. old

  1291. listed.

  1292. And

  1293. in

  1294. verse

  1295. 39

  1296. the

  1297. author

  1298. of

  1299. Hebrews

  1300. says,

  1301. And

  1302. all

  1303. these

  1304. though

  1305. commended

  1306. through

  1307. their

  1308. faith

  1309. did

  1310. not

  1311. receive

  1312. what

  1313. was

  1314. promised

  1315. since

  1316. God

  1317. had

  1318. provided

  1319. something

  1320. better

  1321. for

  1322. us

  1323. that

  1324. apart

  1325. from

  1326. us

  1327. they

  1328. should

  1329. not

  1330. be

  1331. made

  1332. perfect.

  1333. So

  1334. the

  1335. people

  1336. of

  1337. old

  1338. awaited

  1339. the

  1340. promise

  1341. of

  1342. the

  1343. coming

  1344. Christ

  1345. that

  1346. the

  1347. church

  1348. would

  1349. be

  1350. gathered

  1351. together

  1352. that

  1353. all

  1354. of

  1355. us

  1356. one

  1357. day

  1358. will

  1359. rejoice

  1360. together

  1361. in

  1362. the

  1363. presence

  1364. of

  1365. God.

  1366. Brings

  1367. us to

  1368. the

  1369. third

  1370. point.

  1371. Sola

  1372. fide

  1373. cries

  1374. the

  1375. church.

  1376. This

  1377. church

  1378. that this

  1379. letter was

  1380. written to

  1381. in Rome

  1382. and

  1383. us

  1384. today

  1385. is the

  1386. blessing

  1387. only for

  1388. the

  1389. circumcised

  1390. or also

  1391. the

  1392. uncircumcised.

  1393. Praise

  1394. be to

  1395. God.

  1396. The

  1397. answer

  1398. is

  1399. for

  1400. both.

  1401. I

  1402. think

  1403. some

  1404. of

  1405. you

  1406. may

  1407. be

  1408. ethnically

  1409. Jewish.

  1410. Most

  1411. of

  1412. us

  1413. are

  1414. not.

  1415. I'm

  1416. so

  1417. grateful

  1418. that

  1419. the

  1420. gospel

  1421. of

  1422. Jesus

  1423. Christ

  1424. is

  1425. for

  1426. all

  1427. of

  1428. us.

  1429. And

  1430. he

  1431. makes

  1432. this

  1433. argument.

  1434. When

  1435. was

  1436. the

  1437. righteousness

  1438. counted

  1439. to

  1440. Abraham?

  1441. Before

  1442. or

  1443. after

  1444. he

  1445. was

  1446. circumcised?

  1447. And

  1448. it

  1449. was

  1450. most

  1451. certainly

  1452. before.

  1453. As

  1454. I

  1455. said,

  1456. at

  1457. least

  1458. 13

  1459. years

  1460. before.

  1461. There's

  1462. a

  1463. great

  1464. gap

  1465. of

  1466. time

  1467. from

  1468. the

  1469. beginning

  1470. of

  1471. Genesis

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  1472. chapter

  1473. 15

  1474. to

  1475. the

  1476. beginning

  1477. of

  1478. Genesis

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  1479. chapter

  1480. 17.

  1481. Not

  1482. justified

  1483. by works

  1484. of

  1485. the

  1486. law.

  1487. The

  1488. law

  1489. bears

  1490. witness

  1491. to

  1492. our

  1493. sinful

  1494. state

  1495. and

  1496. our

  1497. need

  1498. of

  1499. a

  1500. savior.

  1501. It

  1502. helps

  1503. us

  1504. be

  1505. aware

  1506. of

  1507. our

  1508. transgression.

  1509. Once

  1510. counted,

  1511. declared

  1512. righteous,

  1513. it

  1514. helps

  1515. us

  1516. to

  1517. know

  1518. how

  1519. we

  1520. ought

  1521. to

  1522. walk

  1523. to

  1524. please

  1525. our

  1526. God.

  1527. But

  1528. we

  1529. are

  1530. not

  1531. justified

  1532. by

  1533. works

  1534. of

  1535. the

  1536. law.

  1537. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1538. chapter

  1539. 3.

  1540. Last

  1541. text

  1542. for

  1543. today.

  1544. Verse

  1545. 6

  1546. and

  1547. following.

  1548. There

  1549. Paul

  1550. says,

  1551. Abraham

  1552. believed

  1553. God

  1554. and it

  1555. was

  1556. counted

  1557. to

  1558. him

  1559. as

  1560. righteousness.

  1561. Genesis

  1562. 15

  1563. 6.

  1564. Know

  1565. then

  1566. that

  1567. it

  1568. is

  1569. those

  1570. of

  1571. faith

  1572. who

  1573. are

  1574. the

  1575. sons

  1576. of

  1577. Abraham.

  1578. And

  1579. the

  1580. scripture

  1581. foreseeing

  1582. that

  1583. God

  1584. would

  1585. justify

  1586. the

  1587. Gentiles

  1588. by

  1589. faith

  1590. preached

  1591. the

  1592. gospel

  1593. beforehand

  1594. to

  1595. Abraham

  1596. saying

  1597. in

  1598. you

  1599. shall

  1600. all

  1601. the

  1602. nations

  1603. be

  1604. blessed.

  1605. Remember

  1606. that

  1607. back

  1608. from

  1609. the

  1610. beginning

  1611. of

  1612. chapter

  1613. 12?

  1614. In

  1615. you

  1616. shall

  1617. all

  1618. the

  1619. nations

  1620. be

  1621. blessed.

  1622. And

  1623. here

  1624. Paul

  1625. says

  1626. under

  1627. the

  1628. inspiration

  1629. of

  1630. the

  1631. spirit

  1632. that

  1633. this

  1634. was

  1635. the

  1636. scriptures

  1637. preaching

  1638. the

  1639. gospel.

  1640. That's

  1641. cool.

  1642. So cool.

  1643. Verse

  1644. 9

  1645. Galatians 3

  1646. So then

  1647. those

  1648. who

  1649. are

  1650. of

  1651. faith

  1652. are

  1653. blessed

  1654. along

  1655. with

  1656. Abraham

  1657. the

  1658. man

  1659. of

  1660. faith.

  1661. For

  1662. all

  1663. who

  1664. rely

  1665. on

  1666. works

  1667. of

  1668. the

  1669. law

  1670. are

  1671. under

  1672. a

  1673. curse

  1674. for

  1675. it

  1676. is

  1677. written

  1678. curse

  1679. be

  1680. everyone

  1681. who

  1682. does

  1683. not

  1684. abide

  1685. by

  1686. all

  1687. things

  1688. written

  1689. in

  1690. the

  1691. book

  1692. of

  1693. the

  1694. law

  1695. and

  1696. do

  1697. them.

  1698. And

  1699. there

  1700. what

  1701. he's

  1702. saying

  1703. is

  1704. if

  1705. you're

  1706. !

  1707. counting

  1708. !

  1709. on

  1710. your

  1711. keeping

  1712. of

  1713. the

  1714. law

  1715. to

  1716. save

  1717. you've

  1718. broken

  1719. it

  1720. and

  1721. you're

  1722. cursed.

  1723. It

  1724. will

  1725. not

  1726. save

  1727. you.

  1728. Now

  1729. it

  1730. is

  1731. evident

  1732. that

  1733. no

  1734. one

  1735. is

  1736. justified

  1737. before

  1738. God

  1739. by

  1740. the

  1741. law

  1742. for

  1743. the

  1744. righteous

  1745. shall

  1746. live

  1747. by

  1748. faith.

  1749. The

  1750. Bible

  1751. alone

  1752. is

  1753. God's

  1754. final

  1755. authority

  1756. sola

  1757. scriptura

  1758. and

  1759. it

  1760. is

  1761. on

  1762. its

  1763. pages

  1764. that

  1765. we

  1766. learn

  1767. that

  1768. we

  1769. are

  1770. saved

  1771. by

  1772. God's

  1773. grace

  1774. alone

  1775. sola

  1776. gratia

  1777. through

  1778. faith

  1779. alone

  1780. sola

  1781. !

  1782. fide

  1783. in

  1784. Jesus

  1785. Christ

  1786. !

  1787. alone

  1788. solus

  1789. Christus

  1790. and

  1791. this

  1792. salvation

  1793. and

  1794. all

  1795. things

  1796. exist

  1797. for

  1798. the

  1799. glory

  1800. of

  1801. God

  1802. alone

  1803. solely

  1804. Deo

  1805. Gloria.

  1806. Now

  1807. in a few

  1808. minutes

  1809. the band's

  1810. going to

  1811. come

  1812. and

  1813. they're

  1814. going to

  1815. lead us

  1816. in

  1817. the song

  1818. In

  1819. Christ

  1820. Alone.

  1821. So I

  1822. just want

  1823. you to

  1824. take a

  1825. few

  1826. moments

  1827. and let

  1828. me

  1829. read

  1830. these

  1831. lyrics

  1832. to

  1833. you

  1834. that

  1835. you

  1836. might

  1837. sit

  1838. and

  1839. think

  1840. and

  1841. meditate

  1842. on

  1843. their

  1844. truth

  1845. and

  1846. then

  1847. we'll

  1848. sing

  1849. the

  1850. song

  1851. together

  1852. In

  1853. Christ

  1854. alone

  1855. my

  1856. hope is

  1857. found

  1858. He

  1859. is my

  1860. light

  1861. my

  1862. strength

  1863. my

  1864. song

  1865. this

  1866. cornerstone

  1867. this

  1868. solid

  1869. ground

  1870. firm

  1871. through the

  1872. fiercest

  1873. drought

  1874. and

  1875. storm

  1876. !

  1877. What

  1878. heights

  1879. of love

  1880. what

  1881. depths

  1882. of

  1883. peace

  1884. when

  1885. fears

  1886. are

  1887. stilled

  1888. when

  1889. strivings

  1890. cease

  1891. my

  1892. comforter

  1893. my

  1894. all

  1895. in all

  1896. here

  1897. in the

  1898. love

  1899. of

  1900. Christ

  1901. I

  1902. stand

  1903. in

  1904. Christ

  1905. alone

  1906. who

  1907. took

  1908. on

  1909. flesh

  1910. fullness

  1911. of

  1912. God

  1913. in

  1914. helpless

  1915. babe

  1916. this

  1917. gift

  1918. of

  1919. love

  1920. and

  1921. righteousness

  1922. scorned

  1923. by the

  1924. ones

  1925. he

  1926. came

  1927. to

  1928. save

  1929. till

  1930. on

  1931. that

  1932. cross

  1933. as

  1934. Jesus

  1935. died

  1936. the

  1937. wrath

  1938. of

  1939. God

  1940. was

  1941. satisfied

  1942. for

  1943. every

  1944. sin

  1945. on

  1946. him

  1947. was

  1948. laid

  1949. here

  1950. in the

  1951. death

  1952. of

  1953. Christ

  1954. I

  1955. live

  1956. there

  1957. in the

  1958. ground

  1959. his

  1960. body

  1961. lay

  1962. light

  1963. of

  1964. the

  1965. world

  1966. by

  1967. darkness

  1968. slain

  1969. then

  1970. bursting

  1971. forth

  1972. in

  1973. glorious

  1974. day

  1975. up

  1976. from

  1977. the

  1978. grave

  1979. he

  1980. rose

  1981. again

  1982. and

  1983. as

  1984. he

  1985. stands

  1986. in

  1987. victory

  1988. sin's

  1989. cursed

  1990. has

  1991. lost

  1992. its

  1993. grip

  1994. on

  1995. me

  1996. for

  1997. I

  1998. am

  1999. his

  2000. and

  2001. he

  2002. is

  2003. mine

  2004. I

  2005. bought

  2006. with

  2007. the

  2008. precious

  2009. blood

  2010. of

  2011. Christ

  2012. no

  2013. guilt

  2014. in

  2015. life

  2016. no

  2017. fear

  2018. in

  2019. death

  2020. this

  2021. is

  2022. the

  2023. power

  2024. of

  2025. Christ

  2026. in

  2027. me

  2028. from

  2029. life's

  2030. first

  2031. cry

  2032. to

  2033. final

  2034. breath

  2035. Jesus

  2036. commands

  2037. my

  2038. destiny

  2039. no

  2040. power

  2041. of

  2042. hell

  2043. no

  2044. scheme

  2045. of

  2046. man

  2047. can

  2048. ever

  2049. pluck

  2050. me

  2051. from

  2052. his

  2053. hand

  2054. till

  2055. he

  2056. returns

  2057. or

  2058. calls

  2059. me

  2060. home

  2061. here

  2062. in

  2063. the

  2064. power

  2065. of

  2066. Christ

  2067. I'll

  2068. stand

  2069. let's

  2070. pray

  2071. together
