  1. Well, good morning. I'm glad you're here with us this morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  2. Today's text is Romans chapter 4, verses 13 through 25.

    Romans 4:13–25

  3. ! We will see in today's text, once again, that we are justified, which means to be declared righteous or morally perfect through faith alone.

  4. Do not grow weary of hearing such good news. We will read it, and we will preach it, and we will recite it, we will pray it, we will sing it each Lord's Day when we gather.

  5. Because of my fickle heart and wayward emotions, I need to be reminded of God's loving kindness to me in the person and work of Jesus Christ as often as possible.

  6. And I believe that you do, too.

  7. So, just this week, in addition, on social media, a platform that's strangely now called X, I dipped my toe into a debate amongst professing conservative Christians concerning justification by faith alone.

  8. And to my great surprise, saw many deny this important doctrine.

  9. Beloved, I said to you some weeks ago, we are Protestants.

  10. And we are at our very best when we hold fast to the solas.

  11. We believe and declare that the Bible alone teaches us that we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  12. And all of this is to the glory of God alone.

  13. We do not innovate.

  14. We hold.

  15. We do not waver.

  16. We hold.

  17. We do not become distracted.

  18. We hold.

  19. We contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  20. This is the hill to die on.

  21. For our sake, for the sake of others, to the glory of God, we hold.

  22. And so join me as Paul continues to make his case in Romans chapter 4, verse 13, through the end of the chapter.

    Romans 4:13

  23. Beloved, this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  24. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  25. Verse 13, for the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

  26. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

  27. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law, there is no transgression.

  28. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring.

  29. Not only to the adherent of the law, but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

  30. As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations.

  31. In the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

  32. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations.

  33. As he had been told, so shall your offspring be.

  34. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead, since he was about a hundred years old.

  35. Or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

  36. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God.

  37. Fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  38. This is why his faith was counted to him as righteousness.

  39. But the words it was counted to him were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also.

  40. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus, our Lord.

  41. Who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

  42. Now, this is a lot of text for today.

  43. Thirteen verses.

  44. And there are phrases in here that I want to just stop on for weeks at a time.

  45. But I think that the church will be better served to take it in a chunk and to move past it.

  46. So, as I read that to you, if there was a phrase that popped in your mind, you said,

  47. Oh, I can't wait to hear the extensive explanation of that.

  48. It may not come today.

  49. And the scripture so often gets to be unfolded or peeled back like an onion.

  50. There's much to mine out of the text.

  51. We won't be able to cover it all today.

  52. Our time together is brief.

  53. The argument can be a little bit difficult to track, but we're going to do so our best with a simple outline,

  54. which is often three points, but today it's five.

  55. So, let me give those to you quickly, and then we'll dive into the first point.

  56. So, number one, by grace alone through faith alone.

  57. We see this in verses 13 through 16.

  58. Secondly, the object of faith, verse 17.

  59. Thirdly, the obstacles of faith, verses 18 and 19.

  60. Fourthly, the nature of faith, verses 20 and 21.

  61. And lastly, the result of faith, verses 22 through 25.

  62. So, first, by grace alone through faith alone.

  63. Paul is going on to make this case that this is how we are justified.

  64. This is how we are saved from the wrath of God.

  65. By grace alone through faith alone.

  66. He speaks in today's text about the relationship between the law and the gospel,

  67. which we will see carried throughout the letter.

  68. And it's an important, but sometimes difficult thing to get exactly right.

  69. The relationship between law and gospel.

  70. But we need to get it right.

  71. In verses 13 and 15, Paul teaches us two important facts concerning the law.

  72. The first one is that you cannot be saved by the law.

  73. You are not and cannot be morally perfect.

  74. And therefore, cannot be declared righteous because of your works.

  75. This is an absolute impossibility.

  76. All of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  77. Notice there in verse 13, the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be the heir of the world

  78. did not come through the law, because it could not, but through the righteousness of faith.

  79. This is the way that Abraham was justified.

  80. We see that at the beginning of chapter 4.

  81. If you weren't with us last week, I really encourage you to go back and read chapter 4, beginning in verse 1.

  82. Or, perhaps just read from the beginning of the letter.

  83. We are justified by faith alone.

  84. But what do we make of verse 14?

  85. There he says,

  86. It is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs.

  87. If this is the case, faith is null and the promise is void.

  88. It doesn't seem to suggest that some people are able to keep the law?

  89. If anybody were to do it, then the promise would be void.

  90. But perhaps we're helped by another translation of this verse from the NASB 95,

  91. where there it says,

  92. For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified.

  93. You'll also notice in verse 16 that same thing.

  94. Not only to the adherent of the law, but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham.

  95. So this verse could be understood sociologically or nationalistically.

  96. I think that the former is correct.

  97. I think Paul is meaning to reference the Jewish people,

  98. but I think more than that what he's saying is those who attempt to live by the law.

  99. Which largely would have been the partly Jewish audience that he's writing to here,

  100. but also applies to us.

  101. Those who have God's law and try to live by it.

  102. Endeavor to be a people of or adherence to the law

  103. and to find our justification there.

  104. If we were able to do so,

  105. then the promise that comes through faith would be void.

  106. But nobody can.

  107. Nobody has and nobody will be a faithful adherent to the law.

  108. And therefore, faith is not null and the promise is not void.

  109. If you back up a little bit into Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  110. there in verse 9 and following, Paul says,

  111. is this blessing then only for the circumcised or also for the uncircumcised?

  112. For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

  113. How then was it counted to him?

  114. Was it before or after he had been circumcised?

  115. So here there, him keeping the law.

  116. God commanded a thing that he did.

  117. He says,

  118. No, it was not after but before he was circumcised.

  119. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith

  120. while he was still uncircumcised.

  121. His obedience and circumcision was the evidence of the faith

  122. that he had already expressed in God's promises.

  123. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised

  124. so that righteousness would be counted to them as well

  125. and to make him the father of the circumcised who were not merely circumcised

  126. but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had

  127. before he was circumcised.

  128. So if you're tracking with me, I hope that you are.

  129. The point is that you cannot be saved by the law.

  130. Secondly, we learn in verse 15 that the law exposes our sinfulness.

  131. There Paul says,

  132. again, this is a verse I think we could spend much time on,

  133. but he says,

  134. in brief,

  135. the law brings wrath,

  136. but where there is no law,

  137. there is no transgression.

  138. Now he is not saying that we get to remain blissfully ignorant.

  139. Not at all what he's trying to say.

  140. He's not saying run from any command

  141. because he's made the case extensively in the previous chapters

  142. that whether Jew or Greek,

  143. we have sinned.

  144. Hear what he says in Romans chapter 3, verse 9 and following.

    Romans 3:9

  145. He says,

  146. we have already charged.

  147. And he's referring to chapter 1, verse 18,

  148. all the way through chapter 2, verse 29.

  149. We have already charged that all,

  150. both Jews and Greeks,

  151. are under sin.

  152. As it is written,

  153. none is righteous.

  154. No, not one.

  155. No one understands.

  156. No one seeks for God.

  157. All have turned aside together.

  158. They have become worthless.

  159. No one does good.

  160. Not even one.

  161. The law,

  162. whether written on paper

  163. or written in our hearts,

  164. exposes our rebellion

  165. against the most holy God.

  166. It makes us aware of a need.

  167. And that need is met by Christ.

  168. The law is meant to lead us to Christ.

  169. Let me show you another place that Paul speaks to this

  170. in Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  171. I think it would serve you to join me there.

  172. Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  173. This letter being written specifically

  174. to address a heresy that was being taught

  175. in the church

  176. where Jewish people

  177. who had professed faith in Christ

  178. were coming and telling

  179. Greek-professing Christians

  180. that they must be circumcised

  181. in order to be found right with God.

  182. You're going to be justified

  183. by faith plus circumcision

  184. is the claim that they were making.

  185. And Paul is addressing this

  186. and he is clear and pointed

  187. in his words.

  188. But he says this beginning in verse 23.

  189. Now before faith came,

  190. we were held captive under the law,

  191. imprisoned until the coming faith

  192. would be revealed.

  193. So then the law was our guardian

  194. until Christ came

  195. in order that we might be justified

  196. by faith.

  197. But now that faith has come.

  198. We are no longer under a guardian

  199. for in Christ Jesus

  200. you are all sons of God

  201. through faith.

  202. So here we see

  203. in our text for today,

  204. Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  205. the law brings wrath.

  206. It shows us our transgression.

  207. And here Paul says

  208. it's a guardian for us.

  209. Let me read to you a quote

  210. from an article published

  211. in Ligonier Ministries

  212. Table Talk magazine.

  213. I'd like to attribute it

  214. to an author

  215. but they didn't

  216. so I can't.

  217. But from Table Talk magazine

  218. an author writes,

  219. in ancient Rome

  220. the guardian was a slave

  221. entrusted with the care

  222. of another's child

  223. when the child reached age six.

  224. Until the child reached adolescence

  225. the guardian was like a nanny

  226. who watched over the child

  227. and ensured that he made it

  228. to and from school.

  229. The guardian was not

  230. a professional teacher

  231. but he did serve as a tutor

  232. who at home reviewed

  233. with the child

  234. the material learned

  235. in the classroom.

  236. Additionally,

  237. the guardian was the child's

  238. main disciplinarian.

  239. He corrected bad manners

  240. and helped his charge

  241. learn etiquette.

  242. Depending on the individual,

  243. a guardian might discipline

  244. the child harshly

  245. with canings and whippings

  246. or with greater tenderness

  247. and care.

  248. Some children hated

  249. their guardian.

  250. others formed a strong

  251. lifelong bond with him.

  252. This background enriches

  253. our understanding

  254. of the purpose of the law

  255. and why it is no longer

  256. the defining principle

  257. of the life of the believer.

  258. If the Mosaic law

  259. is like a guardian,

  260. then by definition

  261. it was not a permanent guardian

  262. since the job of the guardian

  263. was over when the child

  264. was grown up.

  265. Though the believing community

  266. learned much from the law,

  267. just as a child

  268. learned manners

  269. from his guardian,

  270. the law had the important job

  271. of taking us to school,

  272. of leading us to Christ.

  273. So this is the point of the law

  274. Paul is arguing here

  275. in Galatians, right?

  276. To move us along,

  277. to bring us up

  278. into adulthood, right?

  279. Into a proper understanding

  280. of the gospel

  281. of Jesus Christ.

  282. It prods us

  283. in that direction.

  284. So,

  285. the law exposes

  286. our sinfulness

  287. that we might

  288. by faith

  289. believe in Christ.

  290. Verse 16,

  291. that is why

  292. it depends on faith.

  293. In order that the promise

  294. may rest on grace

  295. and be guaranteed

  296. to all his offspring,

  297. right?

  298. The faith that is granted

  299. by grace.

  300. God,

  301. in his loving kindness,

  302. saving a people

  303. for his praise.

  304. Not only to the

  305. adherent of the law,

  306. but also to the one

  307. who shares the faith

  308. of Abraham,

  309. who is the father

  310. of us all.

  311. We are justified

  312. by grace alone,

  313. through faith alone,

  314. in Jesus Christ

  315. alone, right?

  316. Beloved,

  317. this is of dire

  318. importance.

  319. And brings us

  320. to our next point.

  321. Let's observe

  322. some things

  323. about Abraham's

  324. faith.

  325. So,

  326. the object

  327. of Abraham's

  328. faith.

  329. Verse 17,

  330. as it is written,

  331. the text says,

  332. and this is from

  333. Genesis chapter 17

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  334. and verse 5,

  335. I have made you

  336. the father

  337. of many nations.

  338. In the presence

  339. of the God

  340. in whom he believed,

  341. who gives life

  342. to the dead

  343. and calls into existence

  344. the things

  345. that do not

  346. exist.

  347. The object

  348. of faith,

  349. Paul tells us,

  350. was the God

  351. of the promise.

  352. This is what

  353. Abraham believed in,

  354. the God

  355. of the promise.

  356. His faith

  357. was not

  358. an aimless

  359. faith.

  360. faith.

  361. He believed

  362. that God

  363. could and would

  364. do exactly

  365. what he had

  366. promised to do.

  367. Now,

  368. this deserves

  369. some exploration,

  370. so join me

  371. in the book of

  372. Genesis,

  373. and let's look

  374. briefly at the

  375. account.

  376. We looked at it

  377. a bit last week.

  378. Let's go to

  379. Genesis chapter 15

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  380. and verse 1.

  381. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  382. Begin

  383. reading in verse 1,

  384. and it'll lead us

  385. to a phrase

  386. in verse 6,

  387. which Paul

  388. is recounting

  389. for us

  390. again and again.

  391. He's quoting

  392. again and again.

  393. He believed

  394. the Lord,

  395. and he counted

  396. it to him

  397. as righteousness.

  398. So,

  399. beginning in verse 1.

  400. After these things,

  401. the word of the Lord

  402. came to Abram

  403. in a vision.

  404. Fear not,

  405. Abram,

  406. I am your shield,

  407. your reward

  408. shall be very great.

  409. But Abram said,

  410. O Lord God,

  411. what will you give me?

  412. For I continue

  413. childless,

  414. and the heir of my house

  415. is Eleazar

  416. of Damascus.

  417. He's remembering

  418. these grand promises

  419. that God has made,

  420. and he said,

  421. but I'm still childless.

  422. How will it come

  423. to pass?

  424. Verse 3,

  425. And Abram said,

  426. Behold,

  427. you have given me

  428. no offspring,

  429. and a member of my household

  430. will be my heir.

  431. And behold,

  432. the word of the Lord

  433. came to him,

  434. This man shall not

  435. be your heir.

  436. Your very own son

  437. shall be your heir.

  438. And he brought him

  439. outside and said,

  440. Look toward heaven

  441. and number the stars

  442. if you are able

  443. to number them.

  444. Then he said to him,

  445. So shall your offspring

  446. be.

  447. And then verse 6,

  448. And he,

  449. Abram,

  450. believed the Lord

  451. and he counted it

  452. to him

  453. as righteousness.

  454. He believed,

  455. he believed

  456. that God would do

  457. what God said

  458. that he would do.

  459. Now,

  460. this belief

  461. is tested

  462. later in the book

  463. of Genesis.

  464. So turn to

  465. Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  466. A number of things

  467. have happened.

  468. Verse 1 says,

  469. After these things,

  470. I encourage you

  471. to read them,

  472. God tested

  473. Abraham.

  474. What was he testing?

  475. He was testing his faith.

  476. Testing his faith.

  477. And he said to him,

  478. Abraham,

  479. and he said,

  480. Here I am.

  481. He said,

  482. Take your son,

  483. your only son Isaac,

  484. whom you love,

  485. and go to the land

  486. of Moriah

  487. and offer him there

  488. as a burnt offering

  489. on one of the mountains

  490. of which I shall tell you.

  491. Kill your son.

  492. Sacrifice your son.

  493. Right?

  494. The one whom I've said

  495. the promise will come.

  496. Right?

  497. And the account says

  498. simply this.

  499. Verse 3,

  500. So Abraham rose

  501. early in the morning,

  502. saddled his donkey,

  503. and took two of his young men

  504. with him and his son Isaac.

  505. And he cut the wood

  506. for the burnt offering

  507. and arose and went

  508. to the place

  509. of which God

  510. had told him.

  511. On the third day,

  512. Abraham lifted up his eyes

  513. and saw the place

  514. from afar.

  515. So he takes the things

  516. he needs,

  517. he travels three days

  518. and comes to the place.

  519. Verse 5,

  520. Then Abraham said

  521. to his young men,

  522. Stay here with the donkey.

  523. I and the boy

  524. will go over there

  525. and worship

  526. and come again

  527. to you.

  528. Very significant verse

  529. we'll see

  530. in just a moment.

  531. Right?

  532. I and the boy

  533. will go

  534. and here

  535. I and the boy

  536. will return.

  537. And Abraham

  538. took the wood

  539. of the burnt offering

  540. and laid it

  541. on Isaac's son

  542. and he took

  543. in his hand

  544. the fire

  545. and the knife.

  546. So they went

  547. both of them

  548. together.

  549. If you read on

  550. or if you're familiar

  551. with the story,

  552. we discover that Abraham

  553. intended to follow through

  554. on the sacrifice

  555. of his son.

  556. At the very last moment,

  557. God stays his hand

  558. and provides instead

  559. a ram

  560. for the sacrifice

  561. and then restates

  562. the promise

  563. that he made

  564. to Abraham.

  565. So we pick up

  566. in verse 15.

  567. And the angel

  568. of the Lord

  569. came to Abraham

  570. a second time

  571. from heaven

  572. and said,

  573. By myself

  574. I have sworn,

  575. declares the Lord,

  576. because you have

  577. done this

  578. and have not

  579. withheld your son,

  580. your only son,

  581. I will surely

  582. bless you

  583. and I will surely

  584. multiply your offspring

  585. as the stars of heaven

  586. as the sand

  587. that is on the seashore

  588. and your offspring

  589. shall possess

  590. the gate

  591. of his enemies

  592. and in your offspring

  593. shall all the nations

  594. of the earth

  595. be blessed

  596. because

  597. you have obeyed

  598. my voice.

  599. Now remember,

  600. the whole matter

  601. was a test

  602. of his faith

  603. so his obedience

  604. proved

  605. his belief.

  606. This is why

  607. we have to read

  608. and understand

  609. the Bible

  610. in its context.

  611. You can simply

  612. pull out verse 18

  613. and go,

  614. See?

  615. It was the obedience

  616. that justified him.

  617. But if we look

  618. at the narrative

  619. in its total,

  620. no, no,

  621. it's his obedience

  622. that simply showed

  623. that he believed.

  624. It's a confident belief,

  625. an unwavering

  626. belief

  627. in God's providence.

  628. It evidenced

  629. his faith.

  630. But it was

  631. his faith

  632. that was counted

  633. to him

  634. as righteousness.

  635. Now with this

  636. in mind,

  637. I want you to join me

  638. in a New Testament

  639. text.

  640. Go to the book

  641. of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  642. chapter 11.

  643. Remember Genesis 22

  644. and verse 5.

  645. I kind of

  646. pointed out

  647. to you.

  648. The author

  649. of Hebrews

  650. in chapter 11,

  651. a chapter that

  652. begins with a

  653. definition of faith.

  654. There he says,

  655. Now faith

  656. is the assurance

  657. of things

  658. hoped for,

  659. the conviction

  660. of things

  661. not seen.

  662. And he launches

  663. into this great

  664. hall of witnesses.

  665. All of these

  666. people that

  667. by faith

  668. were commended

  669. before God.

  670. And in verse 17

  671. of Hebrews 11,

  672. he says this,

  673. By faith,

  674. Abraham,

  675. when he was

  676. tested,

  677. offered up

  678. Isaac,

  679. and he who

  680. had received

  681. the promises

  682. was in the act

  683. of offering up

  684. his only son,

  685. of whom it was

  686. said,

  687. Through Isaac

  688. shall your

  689. offspring

  690. be named.

  691. And then,

  692. verse 5.

  693. Verse 19

  694. is widely

  695. agreed to be

  696. divine commentary

  697. on Genesis 22,

    Genesis 22:5

  698. verse 5.

  699. Remember it said,

  700. Abraham said to

  701. his young men,

  702. Stay here with

  703. the donkey.

  704. I and the boy

  705. will go over there

  706. and worship

  707. and come again

  708. to you.

  709. I and the boy

  710. will go,

  711. will worship,

  712. and I and the boy

  713. will return.

  714. Listen to the

  715. divine commentary

  716. from Hebrews 11,

    Hebrews 11:19

  717. verse 19.

  718. He, Abraham,

  719. considered that God

  720. was able even

  721. to raise him

  722. from the dead.

  723. Abraham went

  724. to go sacrifice

  725. his son,

  726. believing in God's

  727. promise.

  728. God had said,

  729. It's going to be

  730. through Isaac

  731. that all of my

  732. promises will be

  733. realized.

  734. And Abraham had

  735. the kind of faith

  736. that believed

  737. that promise,

  738. so much so

  739. that God would

  740. still accomplish

  741. his purpose.

  742. We'll just let it

  743. read the scripture

  744. for us.

  745. That's okay.

  746. So, Abraham

  747. believed that God

  748. could and would

  749. do what he had

  750. promised to do.

  751. This is incredible.

  752. I don't know how

  753. you wiggle out

  754. of justification

  755. by faith alone.

  756. I don't understand it.

  757. I don't understand it.

  758. I think, perhaps,

  759. people have different

  760. Bibles than

  761. I have.

  762. Verse 17

  763. of Romans 4,

  764. as it is written,

  765. Genesis 17, 5,

  766. that I have made you

  767. the father of many

  768. nations.

  769. In the presence

  770. of the God

  771. in whom

  772. he believed.

  773. Who gives life

  774. to the dead.

  775. Little stars go off

  776. in your head.

  777. Right?

  778. He gives life

  779. to the dead

  780. and calls into

  781. existence

  782. the things

  783. that do not

  784. exist.

  785. I think here,

  786. Paul is talking

  787. about God's

  788. massive might,

  789. his bringing about

  790. the creation

  791. of the world,

  792. to give us

  793. confidence that

  794. he can also

  795. bring about

  796. faith in us.

  797. It wasn't

  798. humanly rational

  799. for Abraham

  800. to think that

  801. he could be

  802. the father

  803. of many nations,

  804. but he believed

  805. in the God

  806. who made

  807. the promise,

  808. despite the

  809. obstacles to

  810. that belief.

  811. So let's

  812. consider briefly

  813. the obstacles

  814. of faith.

  815. Point number

  816. three,

  817. verses 18 and

  818. 19,

  819. the obstacles

  820. of faith.

  821. In hope he

  822. believed against

  823. hope that

  824. he should

  825. become the

  826. father of

  827. many nations,

  828. as he had

  829. been told,

  830. so shall

  831. your offspring

  832. be.

  833. He did not

  834. weaken in

  835. faith when

  836. he considered

  837. his own

  838. body,

  839. which was

  840. as good

  841. as dead,

  842. since he

  843. was about

  844. a hundred

  845. years old,

  846. or when he

  847. considered

  848. the barrenness

  849. of Sarah's

  850. womb.

  851. I notice

  852. two obstacles

  853. in these

  854. verses.

  855. Do you see

  856. them?

  857. Let's

  858. note the

  859. easy one

  860. first from

  861. verse 19.

  862. It was not

  863. biologically

  864. possible for

  865. Abraham and

  866. Sarah to

  867. have a baby.

  868. Not biologically

  869. possible.

  870. I sometimes

  871. just adore

  872. Paul's writing

  873. when he calls

  874. Abraham here

  875. that he was

  876. as good as

  877. dead.

  878. He was

  879. essentially a

  880. dead man,

  881. and then he

  882. parenthetically

  883. says he was

  884. almost a hundred.

  885. He was 99

  886. years old.

  887. They would

  888. require divine

  889. intervention for

  890. this promise to

  891. come true.

  892. Abraham had to

  893. believe that

  894. God would

  895. bring this

  896. thing to

  897. pass because

  898. it was not

  899. biologically

  900. possible for

  901. this to be

  902. the case.

  903. God calls

  904. us to the

  905. same kind

  906. of faith,

  907. a faith that

  908. rests on

  909. his word,

  910. on the things

  911. that he

  912. has said

  913. would happen,

  914. his character

  915. and his

  916. promises

  917. for us.

  918. This is an

  919. astounding

  920. hurdle to

  921. overcome.

  922. God told him

  923. a thing would

  924. happen that

  925. was not

  926. biologically

  927. possible to

  928. happen and

  929. he believed

  930. that it

  931. would come

  932. to pass.

  933. But there's

  934. also a second

  935. obstacle that

  936. I notice.

  937. There's an

  938. interesting turn

  939. of phrase at

  940. the beginning

  941. of verse

  942. 18.

  943. In hope,

  944. he believed

  945. against hope.

  946. Paul distinguishes

  947. between belief

  948. and hope.

  949. They are similar,

  950. but they are not

  951. the same.

  952. I'm going to

  953. spare you the

  954. Greek this

  955. morning for

  956. the sake of

  957. time and

  958. perhaps my

  959. small understanding

  960. of Greek.

  961. Hope is the

  962. desire for

  963. something that

  964. may become

  965. true.

  966. The desire for

  967. something that

  968. may become

  969. true.

  970. In this case,

  971. that he should

  972. become the

  973. father of

  974. many nations.

  975. Paul says,

  976. in hope,

  977. he believed.

  978. He had faith

  979. that the thing

  980. hoped for,

  981. God's promise,

  982. that he would

  983. become the

  984. father of

  985. many nations

  986. would come

  987. to pass.

  988. He hoped

  989. that it

  990. would be,

  991. and he

  992. believed in

  993. hope.

  994. Recall the

  995. author of

  996. Hebrews'

  997. definition of

  998. faith from

  999. the beginning

  1000. of chapter

  1001. 11.

  1002. Now,

  1003. faith is

  1004. the assurance

  1005. of things

  1006. hoped for,

  1007. the confidence

  1008. of things

  1009. hoped for,

  1010. good promises,

  1011. things we

  1012. would like to

  1013. see come

  1014. to pass.

  1015. hope.

  1016. So,

  1017. what does

  1018. Paul mean

  1019. in hope?

  1020. He believed

  1021. against hope.

  1022. It feels

  1023. contradictory,

  1024. doesn't it?

  1025. I think that

  1026. Paul is

  1027. communicating that

  1028. an obstacle to

  1029. Abraham's faith

  1030. was that the

  1031. promise was

  1032. such a grand,

  1033. wonderful promise

  1034. that it just

  1035. seemed too

  1036. good to be

  1037. true.

  1038. I mean,

  1039. what a thing

  1040. to hope in.

  1041. A man

  1042. with no

  1043. heir,

  1044. he's 99

  1045. years old,

  1046. he has no

  1047. heir,

  1048. no potential

  1049. posterity,

  1050. a man who

  1051. Paul says

  1052. was as good

  1053. as dead,

  1054. to hope

  1055. that he

  1056. would have

  1057. children,

  1058. and grandchildren,

  1059. and great

  1060. grandchildren.

  1061. Not only that,

  1062. but that he

  1063. would be the

  1064. father of a

  1065. thousand generations

  1066. that would

  1067. span the

  1068. globe,

  1069. and they

  1070. would belong

  1071. to God.

  1072. A grand

  1073. number for

  1074. the praise

  1075. of our

  1076. God.

  1077. What a

  1078. thing to

  1079. hope in.

  1080. Now,

  1081. I am

  1082. approaching my

  1083. mid-forties,

  1084. which is not

  1085. very old in the

  1086. grand scheme.

  1087. It's far away

  1088. from 99.

  1089. But I can

  1090. already feel a

  1091. tug in my

  1092. soul to make

  1093. my last

  1094. years last.

  1095. I want to

  1096. leave behind a

  1097. rich legacy

  1098. of faithfulness

  1099. to our God,

  1100. which expands

  1101. beyond my

  1102. biological

  1103. children,

  1104. and grandchildren,

  1105. and great

  1106. grandchildren.

  1107. That's one of

  1108. the reasons I

  1109. love pastoring

  1110. a church.

  1111. I love that

  1112. you're having

  1113. children,

  1114. and we're

  1115. raising up

  1116. generations that

  1117. we are

  1118. endeavoring

  1119. prayerfully,

  1120. and fervently

  1121. to see be

  1122. faithful for

  1123. our God.

  1124. Maybe this is

  1125. why I

  1126. sometimes wear a

  1127. cardigan and

  1128. start to forget

  1129. things,

  1130. because I'm

  1131. looking forward

  1132. to where we

  1133. might go

  1134. someday.

  1135. What a

  1136. thing to

  1137. hope in.

  1138. The thing

  1139. that Abraham

  1140. was hoping

  1141. in was much

  1142. higher.

  1143. He was going

  1144. to be the

  1145. father of

  1146. the nations

  1147. that would

  1148. praise God.

  1149. What an

  1150. incredible,

  1151. lofty thing.

  1152. So in hope,

  1153. Abraham believed

  1154. against the

  1155. audacity of

  1156. his hope.

  1157. What a

  1158. massive promise.

  1159. It's a very

  1160. cool turn

  1161. of phrase.

  1162. In spite of

  1163. the obstacles

  1164. of faith,

  1165. he had

  1166. faith.

  1167. So let's

  1168. look fourthly

  1169. at the

  1170. nature of

  1171. faith.

  1172. We're going

  1173. to land the

  1174. plane very

  1175. soon.

  1176. Verse 20

  1177. and 21.

  1178. No unbelief

  1179. made him

  1180. waver concerning

  1181. the promise

  1182. of God,

  1183. but he grew

  1184. strong in

  1185. his faith

  1186. as he gave

  1187. glory to

  1188. God,

  1189. fully convinced

  1190. that God

  1191. was able

  1192. to do

  1193. what he

  1194. had promised.

  1195. So let's

  1196. note two

  1197. things about

  1198. the nature

  1199. of faith.

  1200. And we've

  1201. said this

  1202. to some

  1203. extent already.

  1204. Number one,

  1205. faith is

  1206. unwavering.

  1207. Notice in

  1208. verse 20,

  1209. no unbelief

  1210. made him

  1211. waver.

  1212. And in

  1213. verse 21,

  1214. he was

  1215. fully

  1216. convinced.

  1217. Now,

  1218. I don't

  1219. think that

  1220. he had

  1221. no doubt

  1222. ever.

  1223. In fact,

  1224. if you read

  1225. the account,

  1226. there's some

  1227. doubts that

  1228. creep in.

  1229. I don't

  1230. think this

  1231. is suggesting

  1232. that he

  1233. never had

  1234. any unbelief,

  1235. that his

  1236. faith was

  1237. absolutely

  1238. perfect.

  1239. I think we

  1240. see Abraham

  1241. have some

  1242. weak faith,

  1243. but it

  1244. ultimately

  1245. did not

  1246. cause him

  1247. to abandon

  1248. his faith.

  1249. He was

  1250. fully

  1251. convinced

  1252. that this

  1253. grand thing

  1254. that God

  1255. had promised

  1256. would come

  1257. to pass.

  1258. John Calvin

  1259. wrote of this

  1260. text,

  1261. Believers

  1262. are never

  1263. so enlightened

  1264. that there

  1265. are no

  1266. remains

  1267. of ignorance,

  1268. nor is

  1269. the heart

  1270. so established

  1271. that there

  1272. are no

  1273. misgivings.

  1274. Secondly,

  1275. notice about

  1276. the nature

  1277. of faith,

  1278. that faith

  1279. grows as

  1280. we center

  1281. it on

  1282. God.

  1283. Paul says

  1284. he grew

  1285. strong.

  1286. He grew,

  1287. which means

  1288. there was

  1289. a process.

  1290. He started

  1291. at one

  1292. point and

  1293. grew strong,

  1294. got stronger

  1295. in his

  1296. faith as

  1297. he gave

  1298. glory to

  1299. God.

  1300. Beloved,

  1301. the meter,

  1302. the measure

  1303. of your

  1304. faith,

  1305. the place

  1306. that you

  1307. focus your

  1308. attention,

  1309. should not

  1310. be on

  1311. your self.

  1312. It should

  1313. not be on

  1314. your

  1315. performance.

  1316. It most

  1317. certainly

  1318. should not

  1319. be on

  1320. your

  1321. feelings,

  1322. but should

  1323. be centered

  1324. on God,

  1325. the one

  1326. who is

  1327. unchanging

  1328. and the

  1329. one who

  1330. made

  1331. the promise.

  1332. His faith

  1333. grew and

  1334. our faith

  1335. will grow

  1336. as we

  1337. center our

  1338. faith

  1339. on God

  1340. himself.

  1341. Fifthly,

  1342. and lastly,

  1343. the result

  1344. of faith,

  1345. verse 22

  1346. through the

  1347. end of

  1348. the chapter.

  1349. That is

  1350. why his

  1351. faith was

  1352. counted to

  1353. him as

  1354. righteousness.

  1355. But the

  1356. words it

  1357. was counted

  1358. to him

  1359. were not

  1360. written for

  1361. his sake

  1362. alone,

  1363. but for

  1364. ours also.

  1365. It will

  1366. be counted

  1367. to us who

  1368. believe in

  1369. him who

  1370. raised from

  1371. the dead

  1372. Jesus,

  1373. our Lord,

  1374. who was

  1375. delivered up

  1376. for our

  1377. trespasses and

  1378. raised for

  1379. our

  1380. justification.

  1381. the salvation

  1382. of Abraham

  1383. and the

  1384. salvation of

  1385. all his

  1386. spiritual

  1387. offspring.

  1388. This is the

  1389. result of

  1390. faith.

  1391. Paul will

  1392. speak of

  1393. Jesus'

  1394. active

  1395. obedience to

  1396. the law

  1397. in chapter

  1398. 5.

  1399. Here he

  1400. focuses our

  1401. attention on

  1402. his passive

  1403. obedience,

  1404. his sacrificial

  1405. death on

  1406. our behalf,

  1407. and his

  1408. third day

  1409. resurrection.

  1410. Jesus died

  1411. in our

  1412. place,

  1413. took the

  1414. wrath of

  1415. God on

  1416. himself that

  1417. we deserve.

  1418. And he

  1419. rose three

  1420. days later

  1421. proving that

  1422. he is the

  1423. Christ.

  1424. Paul here

  1425. helps us to

  1426. see that

  1427. God's promise

  1428. to Abraham

  1429. is fulfilled

  1430. in the

  1431. person and

  1432. the work of

  1433. the Lord

  1434. Jesus Christ.

  1435. He'll write

  1436. later in

  1437. Romans chapter

    Romans 10:9

  1438. 10,

  1439. verse 9

  1440. and 10,

  1441. if you

  1442. confess with

  1443. your mouth

  1444. that Jesus

  1445. is Lord,

  1446. and believe

  1447. in your

  1448. heart that

  1449. God raised

  1450. him from

  1451. the dead,

  1452. you will

  1453. be saved.

  1454. For with

  1455. the heart

  1456. one believes

  1457. and is

  1458. justified,

  1459. and with

  1460. the mouth

  1461. one confesses

  1462. and is

  1463. saved.

  1464. saved.

  1465. So we

  1466. believe and

  1467. confess that

  1468. the Bible

  1469. alone teaches

  1470. us that we

  1471. are justified

  1472. by grace

  1473. alone,

  1474. through faith

  1475. alone,

  1476. in the

  1477. person and

  1478. work of

  1479. Jesus Christ

  1480. alone,

  1481. all to the

  1482. glory of God

  1483. alone.

  1484. Let's pray.

  1485. as
