  1. Join me in your copy of God's Word to the glorious book of Romans, chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  2. Hope that you have enjoyed the study thus far in Romans.

  3. ! We know it's been sort of spread out, so our goal now is to kind of continue moving through it, like Nathan said, at a little bit of a faster pace.

  4. Just indulge me for a few minutes while I just want to emphasize, I guess, the importance of the book of Romans.

  5. If you're joining us for the first time in Romans, or you can't really remember from several weeks ago what was preached,

  6. some people here today may think, I understand the gospel message really well.

  7. I believe the gospel. I'm a Christian. I have for a long time trusted my life to Christ.

  8. I'm ready to move on to something else more deep beyond the gospel.

  9. I'm ready for deeper spiritual things.

  10. You may be thinking I might be bored in Romans. I may not be challenged in Romans.

  11. And I want to humbly confront people who feel this way this morning.

  12. There's a great quote by David Pryor and it says this,

  13. We never move on from the cross.

  14. We never move on from the cross.

  15. Only into a more profound understanding of the cross.

  16. The gospel can help you break free of all sorts of sin in our lives.

  17. Many of us who may claim that we know the gospel, love it and cherish it,

  18. and we're ready to move on to something else,

  19. those same people will forget the gospel probably later today.

  20. And definitely tomorrow.

  21. If we watch the lives of many throughout the week, even my own life,

  22. think about your own life,

  23. much of it is marked by unbelief in the gospel.

  24. Your lives would look radically different if the gospel was foremost in your mind

  25. and in your heart on a daily basis.

  26. Many of you are lack.

  27. You have a lack of joy.

  28. You're often bored.

  29. You're lazy.

  30. Depressed.

  31. Eaten up with anxiety and a lack of peace in your life.

  32. When facing circumstances,

  33. you may even lack consistent spiritual growth.

  34. And it seems like the Christian life for some of you has just been reduced down to

  35. a list of just don't do this and try to do this during the week.

  36. Always looking for a new technique, a new book.

  37. A new truth to take comfort in, to strengthen your faith.

  38. Many of you may be posturing throughout the week,

  39. trying to project that you are stronger in your faith than you actually are.

  40. Many may be performing, trying to prove themselves to others around them and to God.

  41. And then many of you are just faced with panicking.

  42. You are looking around with fear and anxiety in your life.

  43. If any of this stuff characterizes you,

  44. you need to be reminded that you do not move on from the gospel.

  45. The gospel itself is powerful enough to give you the confidence to free you from

  46. joy-robbing, legalistic, pharisaical thinking in your life,

  47. the crippling effects of guilt and shame in your life.

  48. It will help you.

  49. The gospel can set you free just basing the quality of your faith on how you feel on a particular day.

  50. Free you beyond circumstances and help you grow in joy and in gratitude.

  51. Because sadly, one of the lingering effects of sin in our lives is we have a tendency to forget.

  52. We have a tendency to forget the most basic foundational truths of the word of God.

  53. We forget it.

  54. And we think that we've moved on.

  55. And Satan, the world, and sin in our lives would love us just to forget the gospel

  56. and think that we've graduated from it to another theological level.

  57. The late Tim Keller learned a lot from him.

  58. Not a perfect man, but learned a lot from him.

  59. But one of the things he said I'll never forget is

  60. the gospel is not just the ABCs of Christianity.

  61. It's the A to Z of Christianity.

  62. It's not just the minimum required doctrine necessary for you to become a Christian,

  63. but it's the way that we make all spiritual progress therein.

  64. The gospel is that message that is simple, that a child can understand it,

  65. but yet so deeply profound that the greatest theologians can stare at it every day of their life

  66. and never get to the depths of it.

  67. Paul said he wrote a preaching to the Gentiles,

  68. the unsearchable riches of Christ.

  69. Ephesians 3, 7, and 8.

  70. If the gospel is true then, if it's true,

  71. it must stand up under the harshest scrutiny.

  72. We need an airtight case for the gospel

  73. if we are entrusting our souls to his message.

  74. If your faith, if your salvation was on trial,

  75. and you were headed into a courtroom,

  76. what would you take with you?

  77. Arguably, the book of Romans gives us

  78. the fullest detailed at-length explanation of the gospel.

  79. It is written like a court case.

  80. It is the fullest explanation of our salvation.

  81. It might have already been said,

  82. but Martin Luther believed

  83. that if you understood the book of Romans,

  84. it was the key to unlocking the entire Bible.

  85. So never get bored of reading Romans.

  86. So a quick reminder of where we've been.

  87. Quick reminder.

  88. Chapter 1 and 2,

  89. Paul brings a case against all humanity,

  90. including himself, Jews and Gentiles,

  91. that we are all fallen, sinful, and rebellious to our Creator.

  92. In chapter 3 and 4,

  93. he then moves to establishing unequivocally

  94. that salvation only comes on the basis of God's grace,

  95. working through man's faith.

  96. This is almost as if he put us all in the same category.

  97. He said,

  98. you cannot save yourself.

  99. You cannot be good enough.

  100. You cannot keep God's law.

  101. If you're going to face God,

  102. who is called the righteous judge,

  103. one day at the judgment,

  104. you cannot go on your own.

  105. If you bring your own works,

  106. or your own merit into things,

  107. or your own morality,

  108. you will be consumed.

  109. So he makes the argument

  110. that salvation comes only on the basis of God's grace,

  111. working through our faith in Christ.

  112. If we come any other way,

  113. even trying to keep God's law,

  114. which we've established in the previous chapters,

  115. which is impossible,

  116. we will fail.

  117. So in placing all humanity under the power of sin,

  118. Paul then points to the redemptive work of Christ

  119. in saving sinners.

  120. Faith in the Savior

  121. has always been

  122. the only way

  123. for us to be made right with God.

  124. And he points in chapter 4

  125. that Nathan just went through

  126. to Abraham's faith.

  127. That he was justified,

  128. made righteous

  129. by his faith.

  130. So having established that,

  131. that man is not saved by works

  132. or by keeping the law,

  133. but by faith in Christ

  134. through God's grace,

  135. here's where we're going

  136. from chapter 5.

  137. I will say that chapter 5,

  138. at least half the time

  139. that I sit down

  140. and open the Bible

  141. to share the Gospel

  142. with an unbeliever,

  143. I use Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  144. You'll hopefully see why.

  145. So that's what we've done

  146. where we're going.

  147. Here's just a question for you.

  148. If the preservation

  149. of our salvation

  150. depends on what we do

  151. or don't do,

  152. then our salvation

  153. is only secure

  154. as our own faithfulness.

  155. That's scary.

  156. If your salvation

  157. that we've talked about

  158. in the previous chapters

  159. is kept alive,

  160. maintained,

  161. and preserved

  162. by your own strength

  163. and willpower,

  164. then that is very terrifying.

  165. Thankfully,

  166. that's not the case.

  167. So Paul moves beyond that

  168. to the central theme

  169. of chapter 5 through 8.

  170. which is that

  171. if we are righteous

  172. in God's sight,

  173. if God has truly saved us,

  174. we have a certain hope

  175. and a certain hope

  176. of future glory

  177. and eternal life.

  178. If you look at verse 1

  179. in Romans 5,

  180. it says,

  181. therefore,

  182. since we have been justified

  183. by faith.

  184. So he now turns

  185. to the implications

  186. of that statement

  187. and describes

  188. the blessings

  189. or the benefits,

  190. the consequences

  191. of a believer

  192. being justified

  193. before God.

  194. He expounds

  195. on the results,

  196. the effects

  197. of that great reality

  198. that we are justified

  199. before God

  200. in Jesus Christ.

  201. So,

  202. really quickly,

  203. I'll give you

  204. five,

  205. maybe not quickly,

  206. but I will give you

  207. five certainties,

  208. okay?

  209. Not hypotheticals,

  210. not we hope

  211. this maybe works out,

  212. it's certainties,

  213. okay?

  214. Five certainties

  215. that we see

  216. in this passage.

  217. So let's read it together.

  218. Romans 1,

  219. 1 through 11.

  220. Therefore,

  221. since we have been

  222. justified by faith,

  223. we have peace

  224. with God

  225. through our Lord

  226. Jesus Christ.

  227. Through Him,

  228. we have also

  229. obtained access

  230. by faith

  231. into this grace

  232. in which we stand.

  233. And we rejoice

  234. in hope

  235. of the glory

  236. of God.

  237. Not only that,

  238. but we rejoice

  239. in our sufferings,

  240. knowing that suffering

  241. produces endurance.

  242. endurance.

  243. Endurance

  244. produces character,

  245. and character

  246. produces hope.

  247. And hope

  248. does not put us

  249. to shame,

  250. because God's love

  251. has been poured out

  252. into our hearts

  253. through the Holy Spirit

  254. whom He has given us.

  255. For while we were weak,

  256. still weak,

  257. at the right time,

  258. Christ died

  259. for the ungodly.

  260. For one will scarcely die

  261. for a righteous person,

  262. though perhaps

  263. for a good person

  264. one would dare

  265. even to die.

  266. But God shows

  267. His love for us

  268. in that while we were

  269. still sinners,

  270. Christ died

  271. for us.

  272. Since therefore

  273. we have now been

  274. justified by His blood,

  275. much more

  276. shall we be saved

  277. by Him

  278. from the wrath

  279. of God.

  280. For while we were

  281. enemies,

  282. we were reconciled

  283. to God

  284. through the death

  285. of His Son.

  286. Much more,

  287. now that we are

  288. reconciled,

  289. shall we be saved

  290. by His life,

  291. more than that,

  292. we also rejoice

  293. in God

  294. through our Lord

  295. Jesus Christ

  296. through whom

  297. we have now

  298. received

  299. reconciliation.

  300. So from this passage,

  301. we're going to look

  302. at five benefits,

  303. five blessings,

  304. five results

  305. of being justified

  306. before God

  307. and Christ.

  308. number one

  309. is certain peace

  310. with God.

  311. Certain peace

  312. with God.

  313. And you see that

  314. in verse one.

  315. We've been justified

  316. by faith.

  317. We have peace

  318. with God

  319. through our Lord

  320. Jesus Christ.

  321. If we understand

  322. what Paul has written

  323. so far in Romans,

  324. especially chapter

  325. one

  326. and two,

  327. we understand

  328. that that is

  329. a remarkable

  330. statement for us

  331. to hear,

  332. that we have

  333. a peace

  334. with God.

  335. Previously,

  336. our relationship

  337. with God

  338. could only be

  339. described in terms

  340. of extreme enmity,

  341. hostility

  342. towards each other.

  343. It says in

  344. Isaiah 57,

    Isaiah 57:20

  345. verse 20,

  346. the wicked

  347. are like the tossing

  348. of the sea.

  349. It cannot

  350. be quiet.

  351. And as waters

  352. toss up mire

  353. and dirt,

  354. there is no peace,

  355. says God

  356. for the wicked.

  357. We were locked

  358. in a serious

  359. contention,

  360. in a legal

  361. dispute

  362. with God

  363. as His enemies.

  364. Look at verse 10.

  365. We were locked

  366. in a serious

  367. dispute with Him.

  368. But,

  369. what Paul is saying

  370. is now,

  371. by His grace,

  372. what Christ

  373. has done

  374. for us,

  375. we are justified

  376. by faith

  377. in what He

  378. has done.

  379. We see that

  380. in chapter 4,

  381. verse 25.

  382. And so,

  383. hostility

  384. that existed

  385. with God

  386. previously

  387. is now

  388. taken away

  389. because of

  390. what Christ

  391. has done.

  392. We are no longer

  393. enemies,

  394. but at peace

  395. with Him.

  396. And this is

  397. a real

  398. peace.

  399. Paul's present

  400. argument

  401. explained in

  402. those previous

  403. chapters

  404. says that we

  405. were at war

  406. with God

  407. and that we

  408. now have been

  409. justified

  410. by faith.

  411. faith.

  412. Now,

  413. I'm going to

  414. try to not

  415. get off

  416. track too

  417. far,

  418. but I'm

  419. begging you

  420. if you are

  421. a believer,

  422. especially if you

  423. are a member

  424. of this church,

  425. understand what

  426. being justified

  427. means.

  428. Alright?

  429. It's a word

  430. that's everywhere

  431. in the New Testament,

  432. especially in

  433. Romans.

  434. So,

  435. it is not

  436. just enough

  437. for us to

  438. have our sins

  439. forgiven.

  440. To have

  441. something

  442. canceled

  443. or taken

  444. away

  445. or forgiven

  446. is not

  447. enough

  448. to stand

  449. before God.

  450. Just because

  451. you've had

  452. dirty clothes

  453. taken off

  454. doesn't mean

  455. that you have

  456. clean clothes

  457. on.

  458. Right?

  459. And we need

  460. clean clothes

  461. to approach

  462. God's throne.

  463. So just to

  464. have sin

  465. taken away

  466. and forgiven

  467. does not

  468. mean that

  469. we are

  470. righteous.

  471. So,

  472. what happens?

  473. Christ then,

  474. this is that

  475. glorious doctrine

  476. of the great

  477. exchange,

  478. Christ gives

  479. us His

  480. perfect

  481. righteousness.

  482. He gives

  483. us His

  484. clean clothes.

  485. It says

  486. in Isaiah

  487. that He

  488. has wrapped

  489. us in

  490. robes of

  491. righteousness.

  492. So now,

  493. we can

  494. approach God

  495. actually

  496. clean,

  497. actually

  498. bright,

  499. actually

  500. righteous

  501. in His

  502. sight.

  503. When He

  504. says we

  505. are justified,

  506. He is

  507. declaring

  508. that you

  509. have kept

  510. the law.

  511. You are

  512. blameless.

  513. And He's

  514. doing that

  515. on the

  516. basis of

  517. what Christ

  518. has done

  519. and not

  520. what we

  521. have done.

  522. So that

  523. is the

  524. great

  525. exchange.

  526. Christ

  527. takes

  528. our

  529. sin

  530. and bore

  531. our

  532. punishment

  533. and He

  534. gave us

  535. His

  536. righteousness

  537. so we

  538. could be

  539. accepted

  540. by God.

  541. So the

  542. result of

  543. that

  544. justification

  545. is we

  546. have real

  547. actual

  548. peace

  549. with God.

  550. Peace

  551. is not

  552. subjective

  553. but

  554. objective.

  555. It is a

  556. legal term.

  557. We have

  558. right standing

  559. with God

  560. and therefore

  561. we have

  562. peace

  563. with Him.

  564. If you

  565. look a little

  566. further,

  567. we have

  568. peace

  569. not because

  570. of our

  571. good moral

  572. behavior,

  573. religious

  574. activity,

  575. going to

  576. church,

  577. good deeds,

  578. reciting

  579. Bible verses

  580. or any

  581. other good

  582. thing that

  583. you can

  584. think of

  585. that we

  586. struck our

  587. own deal

  588. with God.

  589. Spent three

  590. years in

  591. college with

  592. a guy,

  593. a veteran

  594. of the

  595. Iraq war

  596. and all

  597. he talked

  598. about was

  599. like he

  600. had his

  601. own deal

  602. struck with

  603. God and

  604. I kept

  605. telling him

  606. you don't.

  607. Like you

  608. come on

  609. his terms

  610. and not

  611. yours.

  612. We cannot

  613. have peace

  614. with God

  615. through anything

  616. we do but

  617. we can

  618. have an

  619. actual peace

  620. with God

  621. through

  622. our Lord

  623. Jesus Christ.

  624. He alone

  625. is the

  626. agent of

  627. our

  628. reconciliation.

  629. So let me

  630. just ask you

  631. a question.

  632. Brother or

  633. sister,

  634. are you

  635. fearful that

  636. God is

  637. still going

  638. to punish

  639. you for

  640. your sins

  641. that you

  642. have

  643. committed

  644. in the

  645. past?

  646. Are you

  647. afraid that

  648. something that

  649. you might

  650. do in the

  651. future is

  652. going to

  653. cause God

  654. to finally

  655. judge you?

  656. Does the

  657. reality that

  658. if you have

  659. Christ and

  660. you are

  661. justified in

  662. him,

  663. does that

  664. give you

  665. peace?

  666. what he

  667. has done

  668. for you?

  669. Does that

  670. comfort your

  671. soul?

  672. Does it

  673. take your

  674. anxiety away

  675. about facing

  676. God one

  677. day?

  678. So that's

  679. one, we

  680. have certain

  681. peace with

  682. God.

  683. Number two,

  684. we have

  685. certain

  686. access to

  687. God.

  688. Certain

  689. access to

  690. God.

  691. Verse two,

  692. through him

  693. we have

  694. also obtained

  695. access by

  696. faith into

  697. this grace

  698. in which

  699. we stand.

  700. God.

  701. This would

  702. have been

  703. an amazing

  704. statement for

  705. particularly

  706. Jews hearing

  707. this.

  708. Many

  709. generations

  710. before Christ

  711. having access

  712. to God

  713. was a

  714. crazy idea,

  715. scary idea,

  716. foreign thought.

  717. Many of the

  718. people of

  719. Israel in the

  720. Old Testament

  721. knew that

  722. sinful man was

  723. incapable of

  724. approaching God

  725. and entering

  726. into his

  727. holy presence.

  728. They had

  729. witnessed

  730. firsthand,

  731. men and

  732. women just

  733. consumed by

  734. approaching God

  735. on their

  736. own.

  737. God could

  738. only be

  739. approached

  740. through various

  741. protocols

  742. prescribed in

  743. the Mosaic

  744. and Levitical

  745. law.

  746. But now,

  747. since Christ

  748. has secured

  749. peace by

  750. his blood

  751. shed on

  752. the cross,

  753. we are no

  754. longer his

  755. enemies but

  756. at peace

  757. with him,

  758. because of

  759. that we

  760. can have

  761. access to

  762. the holy

  763. presence of

  764. God.

  765. Access to

  766. relationship

  767. with him.

  768. Access to

  769. worship him.

  770. Access to

  771. have like a

  772. child would

  773. have to a

  774. father.

  775. That's what

  776. we have,

  777. access to

  778. God through

  779. what Christ

  780. has done.

  781. So,

  782. have you

  783. taken that

  784. access for

  785. granted?

  786. It has just

  787. approaching God

  788. become so

  789. familiar that

  790. you've forgotten

  791. that it is a

  792. huge blessing

  793. to account

  794. yourself to

  795. be able to

  796. go into

  797. God's presence

  798. because of

  799. Christ.

  800. It says in

  801. the psalm,

  802. psalm 68,

    Psalms 68:2

  803. verse 2,

  804. that the

  805. sinful,

  806. the wicked,

  807. will not

  808. stand in

  809. God's

  810. presence,

  811. but they

  812. will perish

  813. as wax

  814. does before

  815. the fire.

  816. That's

  817. scary.

  818. So,

  819. how does

  820. that not

  821. happen to

  822. us?

  823. It's because

  824. we are

  825. standing in

  826. Christ.

  827. You and

  828. I would

  829. never,

  830. ever dare

  831. approach the

  832. holy presence

  833. of God

  834. apart from

  835. Jesus Christ.

  836. without

  837. him,

  838. the

  839. presence

  840. of God,

  841. the

  842. holiness

  843. of God

  844. has to

  845. be

  846. protected

  847. from

  848. us.

  849. If we

  850. try to

  851. enter into

  852. God's

  853. presence on

  854. our own,

  855. God would

  856. be

  857. dishonored

  858. and we

  859. would be

  860. destroyed.

  861. Right?

  862. But now,

  863. only because

  864. of Christ,

  865. our great

  866. high priest,

  867. we may

  868. come near

  869. and feast

  870. our hearts

  871. on the

  872. flaming beauty

  873. of his

  874. holiness and

  875. his presence

  876. and stand

  877. there just

  878. in awestruck

  879. glory.

  880. It says in

  881. Hebrews 10

    Hebrews 10:19

  882. verse 19,

  883. we have

  884. confidence to

  885. enter the

  886. holy places

  887. by the

  888. blood of

  889. Jesus,

  890. by the

  891. new and

  892. living way

  893. that he

  894. opened for

  895. us through

  896. the curtain.

  897. So,

  898. therefore,

  899. we do not

  900. have to

  901. fear,

  902. to come

  903. into God's

  904. presence,

  905. but we

  906. must come

  907. through Christ

  908. and through

  909. Christ alone.

  910. There is no

  911. other way.

  912. Because of the

  913. work of Jesus,

  914. we can have

  915. access to

  916. God through

  917. a remarkable

  918. state of

  919. his grace

  920. in which we

  921. stand firmly,

  922. securely.

  923. That word

  924. stand carries

  925. the idea of

  926. permanence,

  927. of standing

  928. firm and

  929. immovable.

  930. That's awesome.

  931. We can stand

  932. there certain.

  933. So,

  934. this is a

  935. blessing of

  936. justification.

  937. We can have

  938. peace with

  939. God,

  940. access to

  941. God.

  942. Number three,

  943. number three,

  944. certain hope,

  945. a certain hope

  946. in God.

  947. See this in

  948. verses two

  949. through five.

  950. We rejoice in

  951. the hope of

  952. the glory of

  953. God.

  954. Not only that,

  955. but we rejoice

  956. in our sufferings,

  957. knowing that

  958. suffering produces

  959. endurance.

  960. endurance produces

  961. character,

  962. and character

  963. produces hope,

  964. and hope does

  965. not put us

  966. to shame.

  967. So,

  968. biblical hope

  969. is not just

  970. wishful thinking,

  971. it's not just

  972. crossing our

  973. fingers and

  974. hoping that

  975. things just

  976. turn out the

  977. way we want

  978. them to be.

  979. Biblical hope

  980. implies looking

  981. forward to

  982. something good

  983. in the future

  984. with confidence,

  985. certainty,

  986. and expectation.

  987. Here,

  988. true,

  989. genuine

  990. believers can

  991. be assured

  992. that as a

  993. result of

  994. being justified

  995. before God,

  996. they can

  997. possess true

  998. hope of the

  999. glory of

  1000. God.

  1001. Right?

  1002. That is a

  1003. promise that

  1004. one day we

  1005. will be

  1006. glorified.

  1007. We will be

  1008. perfected on

  1009. the last day.

  1010. That is

  1011. amazing.

  1012. So,

  1013. prove it,

  1014. right?

  1015. How do I

  1016. know that?

  1017. Well,

  1018. you don't have

  1019. to turn

  1020. now,

  1021. let's read

  1022. you one

  1023. verse out

  1024. of Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1025. chapter 8.

  1026. Now,

  1027. think about it,

  1028. if we are

  1029. justified,

  1030. it says,

  1031. those whom

  1032. he predestined,

  1033. he also

  1034. called,

  1035. those whom

  1036. he called,

  1037. he also

  1038. justified,

  1039. and those

  1040. whom he

  1041. justified,

  1042. he also

  1043. glorified.

  1044. Like,

  1045. we have a

  1046. certain hope

  1047. if we are

  1048. made right

  1049. in God's

  1050. sight that we

  1051. will one

  1052. day be

  1053. glorified.

  1054. It's one

  1055. of the

  1056. clearest

  1057. hallmarks

  1058. of a

  1059. justified

  1060. believer

  1061. is our

  1062. perspective

  1063. on the

  1064. future,

  1065. how we

  1066. look at

  1067. things in

  1068. the future.

  1069. True

  1070. believers

  1071. who are

  1072. righteous

  1073. in God's

  1074. sight

  1075. have a

  1076. certain

  1077. hope of

  1078. future

  1079. glory

  1080. to be

  1081. with God

  1082. forever.

  1083. So,

  1084. if you look

  1085. a little

  1086. further in

  1087. these verses,

  1088. if that

  1089. amazing

  1090. hope of

  1091. future

  1092. glory

  1093. is in

  1094. Christ,

  1095. if we

  1096. have that,

  1097. it will

  1098. endure.

  1099. endure.

  1100. It will

  1101. endure even

  1102. in suffering.

  1103. You see

  1104. that?

  1105. Sufferings

  1106. here is

  1107. really the

  1108. word

  1109. tribulations.

  1110. It means

  1111. to be put

  1112. under great

  1113. pressure.

  1114. And in the

  1115. context,

  1116. it's not

  1117. necessarily

  1118. referring to

  1119. the common

  1120. hardships that

  1121. we just have

  1122. in our

  1123. everyday life.

  1124. It's

  1125. specifically

  1126. referring to

  1127. the suffering

  1128. that we may

  1129. endure because

  1130. of the

  1131. backlash of

  1132. being a

  1133. follower of

  1134. Christ.

  1135. the suffering

  1136. that we

  1137. endure by

  1138. being right

  1139. with God.

  1140. So,

  1141. some of us

  1142. might think

  1143. that suffering

  1144. would undermine

  1145. our confidence

  1146. in God.

  1147. But Paul is

  1148. actually making

  1149. the opposite

  1150. argument.

  1151. If your

  1152. hope is

  1153. destroyed and

  1154. is obliterated

  1155. by a little

  1156. bit of

  1157. suffering,

  1158. then it

  1159. wasn't

  1160. really a

  1161. hope worth

  1162. having.

  1163. It's not

  1164. a real

  1165. deal.

  1166. But if

  1167. you have

  1168. an eternal

  1169. hope,

  1170. not saying

  1171. it will

  1172. be easy,

  1173. but it

  1174. will

  1175. endure.

  1176. It will

  1177. last.

  1178. And Paul

  1179. proves that

  1180. by arguing

  1181. cause and

  1182. effect here

  1183. in these

  1184. verses.

  1185. And our

  1186. suffering,

  1187. God allows

  1188. into our

  1189. lives,

  1190. He provides

  1191. the opportunity

  1192. and the

  1193. need for

  1194. our hope

  1195. to endure.

  1196. That

  1197. endurance

  1198. that we

  1199. see,

  1200. or that

  1201. perseverance

  1202. through

  1203. trials,

  1204. it produces

  1205. character.

  1206. The word

  1207. here is

  1208. provenness.

  1209. it proves

  1210. something.

  1211. A character

  1212. that has

  1213. stood up

  1214. under

  1215. extreme

  1216. trial and

  1217. examination

  1218. and found

  1219. to be

  1220. genuine

  1221. through

  1222. testing.

  1223. That's

  1224. what we're

  1225. implying

  1226. here.

  1227. So,

  1228. understand,

  1229. like,

  1230. I was just

  1231. trying to

  1232. think of a

  1233. story to

  1234. tell,

  1235. but I

  1236. probably

  1237. will resist

  1238. because it

  1239. will take

  1240. me a

  1241. long time

  1242. to tell

  1243. it.

  1244. But in

  1245. the past,

  1246. like when

  1247. soldiers were

  1248. facing a

  1249. great enemy,

  1250. outnumbered

  1251. three to

  1252. one,

  1253. and they

  1254. were asked,

  1255. like,

  1256. how are

  1257. your men

  1258. just not

  1259. going to

  1260. run when

  1261. the enemy

  1262. shows up?

  1263. They're

  1264. terrifying,

  1265. they outnumber

  1266. you,

  1267. and like

  1268. this particular

  1269. general who

  1270. was Caesar

  1271. said,

  1272. they won't

  1273. run because

  1274. they have

  1275. been tested.

  1276. They have

  1277. been tested,

  1278. they are

  1279. veterans,

  1280. and they

  1281. will stand

  1282. until the

  1283. end.

  1284. He knew

  1285. the quality

  1286. of the

  1287. provenness

  1288. of the

  1289. men that

  1290. were under

  1291. him.

  1292. Right?

  1293. So when

  1294. we face

  1295. trials,

  1296. and we

  1297. endure under

  1298. that extreme

  1299. testing,

  1300. we will have

  1301. proven character.

  1302. And that

  1303. proven character

  1304. produces a

  1305. stronger hope

  1306. and confidence

  1307. facing the

  1308. future.

  1309. You see that?

  1310. It's just right

  1311. in front of us

  1312. in these

  1313. verses.

  1314. So therefore,

  1315. suffering is

  1316. important because

  1317. it is the

  1318. testing ground

  1319. for faith and

  1320. hope to be

  1321. strengthened.

  1322. we all

  1323. would argue

  1324. that the

  1325. most humble,

  1326. mature believers

  1327. we know are

  1328. those who

  1329. endure great

  1330. suffering in

  1331. their lives and

  1332. somehow persevered

  1333. through it,

  1334. still trusting

  1335. God, still

  1336. clinging to

  1337. his promises

  1338. despite the

  1339. pain and

  1340. despite the

  1341. loss.

  1342. God uses

  1343. those trials

  1344. to make us

  1345. more like

  1346. Christ, to

  1347. give us

  1348. godly

  1349. character.

  1350. So therefore,

  1351. we can

  1352. rejoice,

  1353. not only in

  1354. the future

  1355. glory, but

  1356. in present

  1357. trials and

  1358. sufferings.

  1359. Not because

  1360. they're pleasant

  1361. to go through,

  1362. but because

  1363. God uses

  1364. them to

  1365. transform us

  1366. for the

  1367. better, to

  1368. make us

  1369. more like

  1370. Christ, and

  1371. to bring us

  1372. closer to

  1373. him.

  1374. For

  1375. those of

  1376. you who

  1377. may be

  1378. lacking

  1379. hope this

  1380. morning,

  1381. does this

  1382. reality,

  1383. that we

  1384. are made

  1385. right and

  1386. justified in

  1387. God's

  1388. presence

  1389. through

  1390. Christ,

  1391. does that

  1392. give you

  1393. hope to

  1394. face the

  1395. future?

  1396. Does it

  1397. bring hope

  1398. to you that

  1399. all the

  1400. sin that

  1401. you bring

  1402. is not

  1403. going to

  1404. ultimately

  1405. destroy you,

  1406. but you

  1407. will have

  1408. hope to

  1409. stand before

  1410. God one

  1411. day, even

  1412. through the

  1413. sufferings of

  1414. this present

  1415. life, you

  1416. can have

  1417. hope for

  1418. the future.

  1419. number

  1420. four, a

  1421. certain love

  1422. from God.

  1423. Number four,

  1424. a certain

  1425. love from

  1426. God.

  1427. Look at a

  1428. part of

  1429. verse five,

  1430. starting in

  1431. verse five.

  1432. He says,

  1433. connecting it

  1434. to the

  1435. previous

  1436. verses,

  1437. because the

  1438. love, because

  1439. God's love

  1440. has been

  1441. abundantly

  1442. poured into

  1443. our hearts

  1444. through the

  1445. Holy Spirit

  1446. whom he has

  1447. given us,

  1448. for while we

  1449. were still

  1450. weak at the

  1451. right time,

  1452. Christ died

  1453. for the

  1454. ungodly, for

  1455. one will

  1456. scarcely die

  1457. for a

  1458. righteous

  1459. person, though

  1460. perhaps for a

  1461. good person

  1462. one would

  1463. dare even

  1464. to die, but

  1465. God shows

  1466. his own

  1467. love for

  1468. us, and

  1469. that while

  1470. we were

  1471. still sinners,

  1472. Christ died

  1473. for us.

  1474. So in

  1475. these verses,

  1476. Paul grounds

  1477. the subjective

  1478. experience of

  1479. God's love to

  1480. the objective

  1481. work of Christ

  1482. on the cross.

  1483. So we have

  1484. a hope that

  1485. does not put

  1486. us to shame

  1487. or doesn't

  1488. disappoint us

  1489. because it's

  1490. anchored in

  1491. not our own

  1492. goodness or

  1493. our own

  1494. love for

  1495. God, but

  1496. in his

  1497. agape

  1498. unconditional

  1499. love for

  1500. us.

  1501. That's where

  1502. we can ground

  1503. this certain

  1504. hope, is it's

  1505. based in

  1506. God's love.

  1507. Our hope,

  1508. our final

  1509. deliverance is

  1510. certain, again

  1511. because it's

  1512. based on

  1513. God's love and

  1514. that he has

  1515. given us his

  1516. Holy Spirit.

  1517. Now why does

  1518. this matter?

  1519. The Spirit

  1520. enables us to

  1521. trust in the

  1522. atoning work

  1523. of Christ.

  1524. The Holy

  1525. Spirit is how

  1526. he is the

  1527. agent in

  1528. which God

  1529. manifests his

  1530. love to

  1531. us.

  1532. One of his

  1533. primary roles

  1534. is to

  1535. assure

  1536. born-again

  1537. believers that

  1538. are justified

  1539. in Christ

  1540. that they

  1541. truly belong

  1542. to him.

  1543. Jesus said

  1544. in John 14

    John 14:26

  1545. verse 26,

  1546. when he

  1547. comes,

  1548. he will

  1549. remind you

  1550. of all

  1551. that I

  1552. have taught

  1553. you and

  1554. to bring

  1555. to remembrance

  1556. all that I

  1557. have said.

  1558. Right?

  1559. So that's what

  1560. the Spirit

  1561. does.

  1562. He brings

  1563. the truth

  1564. of God's

  1565. word,

  1566. the promises

  1567. of God's

  1568. word,

  1569. reminds us

  1570. during those

  1571. trials that

  1572. we go through

  1573. in everyday

  1574. life.

  1575. So he is the

  1576. agent of

  1577. God's love.

  1578. He brings

  1579. it to us.

  1580. Similarly,

  1581. Paul wrote

  1582. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:13

  1583. 1 verse 13,

  1584. when you

  1585. heard the

  1586. word of

  1587. the truth,

  1588. the gospel

  1589. of your

  1590. salvation,

  1591. and believed

  1592. in him,

  1593. you were

  1594. sealed with

  1595. the promised

  1596. Holy Spirit,

  1597. who is the

  1598. guarantee of

  1599. our inheritance

  1600. until we

  1601. acquire possession

  1602. of it,

  1603. to the praise

  1604. of his glory.

  1605. So,

  1606. while we

  1607. wait for

  1608. hope to be

  1609. finally fulfilled,

  1610. God's love,

  1611. literally it

  1612. says,

  1613. is being

  1614. poured out

  1615. into our

  1616. hearts

  1617. through the

  1618. Holy Spirit.

  1619. So the

  1620. hope of

  1621. future glory

  1622. and final

  1623. deliverance is

  1624. rooted in

  1625. God's

  1626. unconditional

  1627. love for

  1628. his people

  1629. that his

  1630. son died

  1631. to save.

  1632. So look

  1633. here also

  1634. at verse

  1635. 6.

  1636. Look at

  1637. the timing

  1638. of God's

  1639. love.

  1640. It says,

  1641. at the

  1642. right time.

  1643. Alright,

  1644. so we may

  1645. think,

  1646. why did it

  1647. take so

  1648. long for

  1649. Jesus to

  1650. come?

  1651. Well,

  1652. God says

  1653. it was the

  1654. right time

  1655. in redemptive

  1656. history for

  1657. Christ to

  1658. appear to

  1659. accomplish the

  1660. work of

  1661. salvation.

  1662. So how

  1663. many of

  1664. us

  1665. functionally

  1666. believe that

  1667. God helps

  1668. those who

  1669. help

  1670. themselves?

  1671. How many

  1672. of you

  1673. actually

  1674. believe that?

  1675. A few

  1676. years ago,

  1677. a study

  1678. revealed that

  1679. half of

  1680. evangelicals

  1681. thought this

  1682. was a direct

  1683. quotation from

  1684. the Bible.

  1685. Half.

  1686. 84% at

  1687. least believe

  1688. that it was

  1689. a biblical

  1690. truth.

  1691. So,

  1692. not true

  1693. at all.

  1694. Both

  1695. wrong,

  1696. both

  1697. heresies.

  1698. Ben

  1699. Franklin

  1700. said that

  1701. in

  1702. Paul

  1703. Richard's

  1704. Almanac,

  1705. not in

  1706. the Bible.

  1707. So,

  1708. what does

  1709. it say

  1710. here?

  1711. Paul writes

  1712. that God

  1713. lovingly sent

  1714. Christ for

  1715. us when

  1716. we were

  1717. weak.

  1718. See,

  1719. that means

  1720. helpless,

  1721. vulnerable,

  1722. defenseless.

  1723. It denotes a

  1724. lack of

  1725. moral strength.

  1726. It is

  1727. connected to

  1728. us being

  1729. ungodly.

  1730. unable to

  1731. save

  1732. ourselves

  1733. or do

  1734. anything

  1735. to pour

  1736. ourselves

  1737. out of

  1738. the pit

  1739. that we

  1740. were in.

  1741. In that

  1742. helpless

  1743. state,

  1744. Christ came.

  1745. And so,

  1746. we see,

  1747. he gives you

  1748. an example

  1749. here.

  1750. There is no

  1751. greater love

  1752. than what

  1753. Christ has

  1754. done.

  1755. He contrasts

  1756. the death

  1757. of Christ

  1758. with other

  1759. examples

  1760. of human

  1761. heroic

  1762. deaths.

  1763. Right?

  1764. Such deaths

  1765. are substitutionary

  1766. in nature,

  1767. meaning somebody

  1768. else dies

  1769. for another

  1770. person.

  1771. Right?

  1772. And he

  1773. says,

  1774. on the rare

  1775. occasion,

  1776. even a

  1777. fallen,

  1778. sinful human

  1779. being might

  1780. die for

  1781. a morally

  1782. upright person,

  1783. a good

  1784. person,

  1785. one that's

  1786. done much

  1787. good.

  1788. But those

  1789. examples are

  1790. radically

  1791. different in

  1792. comparison to

  1793. Christ's love

  1794. for us.

  1795. They pale

  1796. in comparison.

  1797. Human love

  1798. at its very

  1799. best is puny,

  1800. weak,

  1801. and pathetic

  1802. in light of

  1803. who God

  1804. is,

  1805. in light of

  1806. his love.

  1807. Why?

  1808. Now think about

  1809. this,

  1810. because all

  1811. others are

  1812. rooted in

  1813. mutual love

  1814. or friendship.

  1815. Jesus says,

  1816. it's easy for

  1817. you to love

  1818. those who

  1819. love you.

  1820. What benefit

  1821. is that to

  1822. you?

  1823. If even

  1824. sinners love

  1825. those who

  1826. love them,

  1827. he didn't

  1828. die for

  1829. righteous

  1830. people.

  1831. He didn't

  1832. die for

  1833. people who

  1834. did good

  1835. to him.

  1836. Jesus

  1837. died a

  1838. horrible

  1839. death for

  1840. unrighteous,

  1841. ungodly,

  1842. hostile

  1843. enemies.

  1844. It'd be

  1845. easy for

  1846. you to

  1847. maybe die

  1848. for your

  1849. child or

  1850. for a

  1851. really good

  1852. friend or

  1853. a parent,

  1854. a loved

  1855. one,

  1856. but they

  1857. love you

  1858. more or

  1859. less.

  1860. But again,

  1861. Christ died

  1862. for those

  1863. who hated

  1864. him,

  1865. for the

  1866. ungodly,

  1867. for his

  1868. enemies.

  1869. He took

  1870. the place

  1871. of sinners

  1872. like you

  1873. and me

  1874. who lived

  1875. in willful

  1876. rebellion

  1877. against him.

  1878. So,

  1879. in God's

  1880. love,

  1881. he initiated

  1882. our salvation.

  1883. 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  1884. chapter 1.

  1885. God's

  1886. love,

  1887. and this

  1888. is the

  1889. love of

  1890. God,

  1891. not that

  1892. we have

  1893. loved God,

  1894. but that

  1895. God loved

  1896. us and

  1897. sent his

  1898. son to

  1899. be the

  1900. propitiation

  1901. for our

  1902. sin.

  1903. Number

  1904. five,

  1905. moving

  1906. quickly here,

  1907. trying to

  1908. land the

  1909. plane.

  1910. Number

  1911. five,

  1912. we have

  1913. certain

  1914. reconciliation

  1915. with God.

  1916. Certain

  1917. reconciliation

  1918. with God.

  1919. Look at

  1920. verse 9.

  1921. Since

  1922. therefore we

  1923. have been

  1924. justified by

  1925. his blood,

  1926. much more

  1927. shall we be

  1928. saved by

  1929. him from

  1930. the wrath

  1931. of God.

  1932. For if

  1933. while we

  1934. were enemies

  1935. we were

  1936. reconciled to

  1937. God by

  1938. the death

  1939. of his

  1940. son,

  1941. much more

  1942. now that

  1943. we are

  1944. reconciled

  1945. shall we

  1946. be saved

  1947. by his

  1948. life.

  1949. More than

  1950. that,

  1951. we also

  1952. rejoice in

  1953. God through

  1954. our Lord

  1955. Jesus Christ

  1956. through whom

  1957. we have

  1958. received

  1959. reconciliation.

  1960. So we

  1961. don't like

  1962. to be

  1963. called

  1964. enemies

  1965. of God.

  1966. Right?

  1967. That is a

  1968. hard term

  1969. to swallow.

  1970. Most people

  1971. think I'm

  1972. cool with

  1973. God.

  1974. I've got

  1975. no problem

  1976. with God.

  1977. Like what

  1978. problem does

  1979. he have

  1980. with me?

  1981. Well,

  1982. unless you

  1983. are in

  1984. Christ,

  1985. you are

  1986. his enemy.

  1987. That means,

  1988. this word

  1989. means one

  1990. who is

  1991. hostile,

  1992. hateful,

  1993. or bitter

  1994. in opposition

  1995. to another.

  1996. The same

  1997. word is used

  1998. of the devil

  1999. in Matthew

  2000. 13.

  2001. Romans

  2002. has taught

  2003. us that

  2004. sobering

  2005. reality that

  2006. all of us

  2007. have fallen

  2008. short of

  2009. the glory

  2010. of God.

  2011. Me,

  2012. you,

  2013. the best

  2014. person you

  2015. know,

  2016. everyone apart

  2017. from Jesus

  2018. Christ.

  2019. We have

  2020. all sinned

  2021. and rebelled

  2022. against him.

  2023. It says in

  2024. Ephesians 4

  2025. that we were

  2026. once alienated

  2027. from a life

  2028. with God.

  2029. That means

  2030. to be shut

  2031. out of one's

  2032. fellowship and

  2033. shut out of

  2034. one's intimacy.

  2035. Alienated.

  2036. Apart from

  2037. Jesus,

  2038. our sin

  2039. has shut

  2040. us out,

  2041. excluded us,

  2042. and cut us

  2043. off from

  2044. fellowship with

  2045. God.

  2046. We love

  2047. the world

  2048. and the

  2049. things in

  2050. the world.

  2051. And James

    James 4:4

  2052. 4,

  2053. verse 4

  2054. says,

  2055. if you are

  2056. a friend

  2057. of the

  2058. world,

  2059. meaning that

  2060. you love

  2061. it,

  2062. it's what

  2063. you go

  2064. for,

  2065. it's what

  2066. you get

  2067. up for,

  2068. if you

  2069. love the

  2070. world,

  2071. you make

  2072. yourself

  2073. an enemy

  2074. of God.

  2075. God said

  2076. through Isaiah,

  2077. our iniquities

  2078. have made a

  2079. separation

  2080. between us

  2081. and God.

  2082. So think

  2083. the idea

  2084. separated.

  2085. Often held

  2086. that many

  2087. people,

  2088. again,

  2089. are enemies

  2090. of God,

  2091. but people

  2092. wouldn't say,

  2093. those same

  2094. people wouldn't

  2095. say,

  2096. well,

  2097. I think

  2098. God doesn't

  2099. have a

  2100. problem

  2101. with me,

  2102. but the

  2103. term here

  2104. is actual

  2105. mutual

  2106. hostility,

  2107. meaning that

  2108. God is

  2109. equally

  2110. angry with

  2111. us for

  2112. our sin

  2113. and for

  2114. our rebellion

  2115. against him.

  2116. God loathing

  2117. the rebellious

  2118. sinner and

  2119. the sinner

  2120. loathing

  2121. God.

  2122. Charles

  2123. Hodge

  2124. once wrote

  2125. about this

  2126. verse,

  2127. there is

  2128. not only

  2129. a wicked

  2130. opposition

  2131. of the

  2132. sinner to

  2133. God,

  2134. but a

  2135. holy

  2136. opposition

  2137. of God

  2138. to the

  2139. sinner.

  2140. Sinful

  2141. man has

  2142. turned away

  2143. from the

  2144. God of

  2145. peace and

  2146. made war

  2147. on him

  2148. instead.

  2149. We all

  2150. have done

  2151. it,

  2152. directly and

  2153. indirectly,

  2154. just rebelled

  2155. against God.

  2156. So it

  2157. says,

  2158. formerly,

  2159. we were

  2160. his enemies

  2161. and we

  2162. needed

  2163. reconciliation.

  2164. And now

  2165. in Christ

  2166. we are

  2167. reconciled.

  2168. Are

  2169. reconciled.

  2170. The New

  2171. Testament

  2172. noun here

  2173. means a

  2174. restoration

  2175. of favor.

  2176. It's used

  2177. three times

  2178. in this

  2179. passage.

  2180. It means

  2181. to change

  2182. the relationship

  2183. of hostile

  2184. parties to

  2185. come together

  2186. again and

  2187. be in peace

  2188. with one

  2189. another.

  2190. To resolve

  2191. their differences

  2192. and to

  2193. restore

  2194. relationship.

  2195. So the

  2196. separation

  2197. and alienation

  2198. our sin

  2199. caused

  2200. with God

  2201. can now

  2202. be resolved

  2203. by what

  2204. Christ alone

  2205. has done.

  2206. He has

  2207. brought us

  2208. back into

  2209. fellowship

  2210. with one

  2211. another

  2212. by removing

  2213. the thing

  2214. that was

  2215. causing

  2216. the hostility,

  2217. namely

  2218. our sin.

  2219. Right?

  2220. That's what it

  2221. says right

  2222. here.

  2223. And this

  2224. is done

  2225. by the

  2226. death

  2227. of Christ.

  2228. In these

  2229. verses,

  2230. some people

  2231. in the

  2232. modern

  2233. church

  2234. want to

  2235. say,

  2236. hey,

  2237. God is

  2238. love and

  2239. He is

  2240. only

  2241. love.

  2242. Others

  2243. may want

  2244. to say

  2245. God is

  2246. wrath and

  2247. He is

  2248. only

  2249. wrath.

  2250. Well,

  2251. in these

  2252. few

  2253. verses,

  2254. you see

  2255. them side

  2256. by side,

  2257. the love

  2258. of God

  2259. and the

  2260. wrath

  2261. of God.

  2262. If

  2263. someone

  2264. says,

  2265. you're

  2266. saved,

  2267. what are

  2268. you saved

  2269. from?

  2270. You were

  2271. saved

  2272. from the

  2273. wrath

  2274. of God.

  2275. So all

  2276. of us,

  2277. even those

  2278. of us

  2279. who are

  2280. in Christ

  2281. will be

  2282. aware

  2283. when that

  2284. wrath

  2285. comes

  2286. one day.

  2287. And in

  2288. that

  2289. you are

  2290. inside

  2291. Christ.

  2292. Inside

  2293. what He

  2294. has done,

  2295. reconciled

  2296. by the

  2297. death

  2298. of His

  2299. Son.

  2300. Now look

  2301. at that

  2302. amazing

  2303. phrase,

  2304. we shall

  2305. be saved

  2306. by His

  2307. life.

  2308. Saved

  2309. by His

  2310. life.

  2311. That is a

  2312. definitive

  2313. certainty.

  2314. If we

  2315. are justified,

  2316. we are

  2317. reconciled.

  2318. And we

  2319. are

  2320. looking

  2321. to the

  2322. future

  2323. with hope

  2324. of glory.

  2325. And we

  2326. shall

  2327. be saved

  2328. by His

  2329. life.

  2330. That is a

  2331. certainty

  2332. and a

  2333. promise.

  2334. So just

  2335. a conclusion

  2336. in that

  2337. very last

  2338. verse.

  2339. What is

  2340. the result

  2341. of this?

  2342. Verse 11,

  2343. we rejoice

  2344. in God

  2345. through

  2346. our Lord

  2347. Jesus Christ.

  2348. The response

  2349. to such

  2350. grace

  2351. and such

  2352. love

  2353. to sinners

  2354. like me

  2355. and sinners

  2356. like you.

  2357. There is

  2358. no response

  2359. but to

  2360. rejoice

  2361. and to

  2362. take up

  2363. your cross

  2364. and follow

  2365. Christ.

  2366. Give

  2367. your life

  2368. to Him

  2369. unreservedly.

  2370. This

  2371. news should

  2372. cause

  2373. great joy

  2374. in your

  2375. heart for

  2376. what He

  2377. has done.

  2378. So this

  2379. is the

  2380. gospel,

  2381. guys.

  2382. This is a

  2383. further

  2384. explanation

  2385. of what

  2386. Christ has

  2387. accomplished.

  2388. You go

  2389. into a

  2390. courtroom

  2391. and your

  2392. faith is

  2393. on trial.

  2394. This is

  2395. your case.

  2396. This is

  2397. your case

  2398. that you

  2399. bring to

  2400. stand

  2401. righteous

  2402. before

  2403. God.

  2404. So let's

  2405. just give

  2406. Him

  2407. thanks

  2408. in prayer

  2409. together.
