  1. Recall that I have told you that the overarching theme of Paul's writing is that a person is justified, or declared righteous by God, by grace alone, through faith alone, in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  2. The thesis statement of his letter is found in chapter 1, verses 16 and 17, where he writes,

  3. I am not ashamed of the gospel, or you could insert I am proud of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

  4. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  5. In the remainder of chapter 1 and in chapter 2, Paul then makes the case that everyone has sinned.

  6. The Gentiles, those without the law, and the Jews, those with the law.

  7. Regardless of their status, all have sinned.

  8. And he hammers this point home in the first half of chapter 3.

  9. Chapter 3, verses 10 through 12.

  10. Say, none is righteous, no not one.

  11. No one understands, no one seeks for God.

  12. All have turned aside together, they have become worthless.

  13. No one does good, not even one.

  14. All of humanity has a righteousness problem.

  15. We are guilty of transgressing God, are separated from communion with him, and are due his judgment and just punishment.

  16. We will not because we cannot earn our way to God.

  17. And this is terrible news.

  18. Paul doesn't end there.

  19. In the rest of chapter 3, he speaks of the righteousness that is granted to us by grace through faith in Christ as our propitiator.

  20. You have heard me say, Jesus lived the life I could not live, and died the death that I deserve, so that through faith in his completed work, I would be saved.

  21. This promise is sure for you if you have or if you will believe in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  22. On a couple of occasions, I've read the following poem to you.

  23. It is unanimous.

  24. Some of you have debated this with me.

  25. It is unanimous.

  26. But it goes like this.

  27. Oh, long and dark, the stairs I trod, with trembling feet to find my God.

  28. Gaining a foothold bit by bit, then slipping back and losing it.

  29. Never progressing, striving still, with weakening grasp and faltering will, bleeding to climb to God while he serenely smiled, not noting me.

  30. Then came a certain time when I loosened my hold and fell thereby, down to the lowest step my fall, as if I had not climbed at all.

  31. Now when I lay despairing there, listen, a footfall on the stair, on that same stair where I, afraid, faltered and fell and lay dismayed.

  32. And lo, when hope had ceased to be, my God came down the stairs to me.

  33. In chapter 4, Paul then puts forth Abraham as an example of one saved, not by his works, but by his faith.

  34. No one has ever been saved by their works.

  35. Old Testament saints were saved through faith in the coming promise of a Messiah.

  36. New Testament saints, including us, are now saved through faith in the fulfilled promise of a Messiah.

  37. See Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  38. In chapter 5, Paul explains how the first Adam, as a representative of all humanity, brought sin into the world,

  39. and how the second Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ, can serve as our representative before God.

  40. So we are justified, Paul argues, by grace alone, through faith alone, in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  41. Now, at every step of Paul's writing, he is anticipating objections.

  42. It feels sometimes like he's in a court of law against himself.

  43. He asks questions and he gives answers.

  44. Now likely he was familiar with the counter-arguments because he had already encountered them many times.

  45. His missionary practice was to go to a new place and reason with the people from the scripture.

  46. Today's text brings us to another anticipated objection to justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  47. We would do well to pay careful attention to the question and to Paul's answer for the instruction of our souls.

  48. So let me remind you before we read the text, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  49. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  50. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  51. Romans chapter 6, beginning in verse 1.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  52. What shall we say then?

  53. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  54. By no means.

  55. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  56. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

  57. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death,

  58. in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

  59. we too might walk in newness of life.

  60. For if we have been united with him in a death like his,

  61. we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  62. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing,

  63. so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  64. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

  65. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  66. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  67. Death no longer has dominion over him.

  68. For the death he died, he died to sin, once for all.

  69. But the life he lives, he lives to God.

  70. Fairly simple outline for our study this morning.

  71. Number one, Paul asks a question.

  72. Number two, Paul answers the question.

  73. And number three, Paul advances his answer.

  74. Alliteration, you're welcome.

  75. Asks, answers, advances.

  76. Number one, Paul asks a question.

  77. He says,

  78. What shall we say then?

  79. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  80. You may have asked this question or been asked this question.

  81. I tell you this morning that you have at least functionally asked this question in your behavior,

  82. although not likely in these terms.

  83. A simple restatement of the question could be,

  84. if Christ has paid the penalty for my sin and given me his perfection,

  85. then can't I live any way I want to?

  86. John Bunyan, you guys know I'm a fan of,

  87. was a 17th century English Baptist, which I'm proud to tell you,

  88. who was in prison for 12 years because he preached without a license from the state.

  89. You may know of Bunyan from his seminal work,

  90. The Pilgrim's Progress,

  91. a work that I love and I read to you often.

  92. You may have noticed I brought a copy of it with me.

  93. I have a plan to read from it briefly this morning.

  94. He wrote this allegory of the Christian life upon being placed in solitary confinement

  95. because he would preach from the courtyard of the prison

  96. and people would gather outside the prison walls to hear him expound upon the Bible.

  97. During this time, some other Christ followers,

  98. also in prison for preaching without a license,

  99. but with very different theology from Bunyan,

  100. told him,

  101. Bunyan, if you continue to preach of God's love,

  102. the people will live however they want to.

  103. Does the objection sound familiar?

  104. If our righteousness depends solely on a God who saves,

  105. without any contribution on our part,

  106. then can't we live however we would like?

  107. This is not an unimportant question,

  108. and we dare not be dismissive of it.

  109. Paul certainly isn't.

  110. In fact, much of his discourse for the next couple of chapters

  111. comes as a response to this objection.

  112. I would argue about halfway through chapter 8

  113. is really his response to this objection.

  114. So we ask an important question,

  115. but it gives us an answer to that question,

  116. an immediate and emphatic answer.

  117. So number two, Paul answers the question.

  118. He says,

  119. By no means.

  120. How can we who die to sin still live in it?

  121. Paul follows his anticipated question

  122. with an emphatic answer,

  123. By no means.

  124. The Greek phrase is me genoito,

  125. and it is very strong Greek language.

  126. It could be interpreted,

  127. No way, or absolutely not.

  128. And he follows this emphatic no with a question.

  129. How can we who died to sin

  130. still live in it?

  131. Paul is going to go on to explain this phrase further,

  132. as are we,

  133. but herein is the simplicity of the matter.

  134. If you are justified by grace alone through faith alone

  135. and the person and work of Jesus Christ alone,

  136. then you have been changed,

  137. not in degree,

  138. but in type.

  139. This is the doctrine of regeneration.

  140. We once were spiritually dead.

  141. Now we are spiritually alive.

  142. This doctrine is perhaps the most important

  143. to be recaptured for the sake of the church

  144. in our day.

  145. Oh, that we would know

  146. that we are no longer captives,

  147. but have been set free.

  148. Oh, that we would live holy lives

  149. for the advancement of the gospel

  150. to the glory of our God.

  151. God.

  152. We are not saved by works.

  153. We are saved through faith,

  154. but it is a faith that works.

  155. Our very identity has been changed.

  156. And I'm not going to stand before you this morning

  157. and declare to you

  158. that having been set free from sin,

  159. we therefore no longer sin.

  160. We do.

  161. We carry around the baggage of our flesh.

  162. We get to work in great deal with this

  163. at the end of chapter 7.

  164. However, we will begin the process

  165. of growing in holiness.

  166. This is a tightrope for our understanding

  167. to balance upon.

  168. So to make it more clear,

  169. I want to show you the two ways

  170. that we could fall off this tightrope.

  171. On the one side,

  172. you could fall off into legalism.

  173. You can give too much credit

  174. to your accomplishments

  175. or you can give too much credit

  176. to your failures.

  177. I see Christians do this to themselves

  178. all the time.

  179. They take their focus

  180. off the accomplished work of Christ

  181. and they become hyper-analyzers

  182. of their lives.

  183. They often compare their current walk

  184. with their walk in the past

  185. or with the walk of another

  186. and become self-accusers

  187. or self-justifiers.

  188. They put themselves

  189. in the place of God.

  190. I see Christians do this

  191. to others all the time,

  192. making judgments of faithfulness

  193. in terms of agreeance

  194. with their views

  195. or with their lifestyle.

  196. The legalist says,

  197. look more like me.

  198. The person walking the tightrope

  199. helps others to look more like Christ.

  200. On the other side,

  201. you can fall off into antinomianism,

  202. which means without the law.

  203. The possibility of this accusation

  204. seems to be the objection

  205. Paul is primarily concerned with

  206. in today's text.

  207. somebody saying,

  208. wait, wait,

  209. we can't just disregard

  210. God's moral commands for us.

  211. Can we?

  212. This error takes sin lightly,

  213. either paying no attention to it at all

  214. or readily dismissing it.

  215. This error says,

  216. let's continue in sin

  217. that grace may abound.

  218. Let's show how forgiving our God is

  219. by going on

  220. and sinning.

  221. So we don't want to become legalists

  222. and we don't want to become

  223. antinomians.

  224. Let us be careful

  225. to make neither error.

  226. We are not saved by works.

  227. We are saved through faith,

  228. but it is a faith

  229. that works.

  230. It's a faith that is given evidence

  231. in the way that we live.

  232. The person restored to relationship

  233. with his or her God

  234. does not view God's commands

  235. as burdensome,

  236. but receives them as a gift.

  237. If we become aware

  238. of God's great love for us

  239. by grace alone,

  240. through faith alone,

  241. in Christ alone,

  242. then we will gladly accept

  243. his ways for our good

  244. and his glory.

  245. We will become increasingly

  246. less enamored with what this world

  247. has to offer us

  248. and increasingly more enamored

  249. with God's purpose

  250. and with God's way.

  251. It becomes the desire

  252. of our hearts

  253. that we would follow

  254. in God's good commands.

  255. This brings me

  256. to the pilgrim's progress.

  257. I haven't read to you yet

  258. from the scene

  259. in Vanity Fair.

  260. At least I don't believe I have.

  261. There's a city

  262. that these pilgrims

  263. in this allegory

  264. happen across

  265. and it's for the testing

  266. of their faith

  267. and it is everything

  268. that the world

  269. has to offer

  270. in this one city.

  271. And they find themselves

  272. in this city

  273. looking very strange

  274. to those

  275. who live there.

  276. And so I read,

  277. quote,

  278. the thing that most

  279. annoyed and puzzled

  280. the merchants

  281. was that these pilgrims

  282. put no value

  283. on the fair's goods.

  284. They did not even enjoy

  285. looking at them

  286. and when the merchants

  287. called out to them

  288. to buy this or that,

  289. the pilgrims

  290. put their fingers

  291. in their ears

  292. and cried out,

  293. turn away mine eyes

  294. from beholding vanity

  295. and looked upward

  296. signifying that their trade

  297. and traffic

  298. was in heaven.

  299. This is from Psalm 119

  300. in verse 37.

  301. One merchant

  302. observing the strange

  303. conduct of the pilgrims

  304. mockingly said to them,

  305. What will you buy?

  306. But they,

  307. looking sternly at him,

  308. answered,

  309. We buy the truth.

  310. Which I just love

  311. from Proverbs 23

  312. if my memory

  313. is serving me well.

  314. Not enamored

  315. with the things

  316. of the world

  317. but enamored

  318. with the things

  319. of God.

  320. Do you remember

  321. the concern

  322. of Bunyan's

  323. fellow prisoners?

  324. Bunyan,

  325. if you continue

  326. to preach

  327. of God's love

  328. the people

  329. will live

  330. however they want to.

  331. Well,

  332. Bunyan reportedly replied,

  333. No.

  334. If I continue

  335. to tell God's people

  336. of God's love

  337. for them,

  338. then they will live

  339. however he

  340. wants them to.

  341. But Paul doesn't

  342. just leave us

  343. with the answer,

  344. by no means,

  345. how can we

  346. who died to sin

  347. still live in it?

  348. and leave us

  349. to figure out

  350. how he goes on

  351. to answer the question.

  352. And as I said

  353. quite a bit

  354. into his letter

  355. but this morning

  356. we have an advance

  357. of his answer.

  358. So third point,

  359. Paul advances

  360. his answer.

  361. Helps us to understand

  362. what it means

  363. to die to sin

  364. and no longer

  365. live in it.

  366. And Paul answers

  367. the question

  368. in four points.

  369. We're going to give

  370. each of them

  371. a brief look

  372. this morning

  373. as we work

  374. through the rest

  375. of the text

  376. and I just want

  377. to encourage you

  378. to consider

  379. these four points

  380. further than we

  381. have time for

  382. this morning.

  383. Mold them over,

  384. think about them

  385. carefully,

  386. talk about them

  387. with a brother

  388. or sister

  389. at your dinner table.

  390. They are an

  391. absolute treasure

  392. trove

  393. for our souls.

  394. This is all

  395. so good

  396. and sometimes

  397. I hate

  398. how little time

  399. we have together

  400. for them.

  401. First,

  402. Paul says,

  403. by grace alone

  404. through faith alone,

  405. we are baptized

  406. into Christ.

  407. This is the

  408. beginning part

  409. of verse 3.

  410. Do you not know

  411. that all of us

  412. who have been

  413. baptized

  414. into Christ Jesus?

  415. Now Paul here

  416. is not speaking

  417. of the symbolic

  418. ordinance

  419. of baptism.

  420. Some people

  421. want to make

  422. arguments

  423. from this text

  424. that we are

  425. justified

  426. through the

  427. act of baptism.

  428. This is known

  429. as baptismal

  430. regeneration

  431. and it is

  432. a heresy.

  433. But Paul,

  434. as I've said here,

  435. is not speaking

  436. of the symbolic

  437. ordinance of baptism.

  438. How do I know

  439. this?

  440. How can we know?

  441. Well,

  442. I know this

  443. because I've read

  444. the rest of the letter.

  445. because I haven't

  446. torn a tiny piece

  447. out of my Bible

  448. to make an erroneous

  449. argument.

  450. Because I haven't

  451. forgotten

  452. that Paul is

  453. arguing for

  454. justification

  455. by grace alone

  456. through faith alone

  457. in the personal

  458. work of Jesus Christ

  459. alone.

  460. So he can't

  461. possibly be saying

  462. that we're saved,

  463. that we're made new

  464. through the

  465. physical act

  466. of baptism.

  467. So,

  468. he must be speaking

  469. of the spiritual

  470. reality of what

  471. is true

  472. for all

  473. who believe

  474. in Christ.

  475. Now,

  476. as a side note,

  477. as a Baptist,

  478. one of the leaders

  479. of a Baptist church,

  480. we do believe in

  481. what's called

  482. credo or credo,

  483. you'll hear people say,

  484. baptism.

  485. We believe that

  486. water baptism

  487. is not the means

  488. of salvation

  489. but a demonstration

  490. of it.

  491. It shows

  492. what's already

  493. happened.

  494. I heard a pastor

  495. one time

  496. compare it to

  497. another type

  498. of ceremony,

  499. a graduation

  500. ceremony.

  501. There's some

  502. college students

  503. here who are

  504. looking toward

  505. and longing

  506. for graduation.

  507. Graduation

  508. ceremonies

  509. aren't entirely

  510. necessary

  511. to finish school.

  512. It's a little

  513. secret,

  514. but you don't

  515. have to walk.

  516. I got out of it

  517. and yet,

  518. I still graduated

  519. from the University

  520. of North Georgia.

  521. You've already

  522. completed the work.

  523. It's been

  524. accomplished.

  525. You've checked

  526. all of the boxes,

  527. but it's showing

  528. that you've

  529. finished

  530. the work.

  531. If you ask

  532. most people

  533. about their

  534. graduation,

  535. they'll take you

  536. to that

  537. ceremony

  538. as a sign

  539. of the thing

  540. that had already

  541. been completed.

  542. I think this is

  543. a pretty good

  544. analogy.

  545. theology.

  546. It's not

  547. the means

  548. of salvation.

  549. It's just

  550. a demonstration

  551. of it.

  552. I digress.

  553. Notice that

  554. the opening

  555. phrase of

  556. verse 3

  557. is a

  558. qualifying

  559. statement.

  560. Paul says,

  561. Do you not

  562. know that

  563. all of us

  564. who have

  565. been

  566. baptized

  567. into Christ

  568. Jesus?

  569. For anything

  570. to be true

  571. of you

  572. in today's

  573. text,

  574. you must

  575. have been

  576. baptized

  577. into Christ

  578. Jesus.

  579. How is this

  580. accomplished?

  581. If we're not

  582. talking about

  583. the physical

  584. baptism,

  585. it's accomplished

  586. by repentance

  587. and faith,

  588. by turning

  589. from your sin

  590. and turning

  591. to Christ

  592. for the

  593. justification

  594. of your

  595. soul.

  596. If you

  597. have,

  598. then you

  599. have been

  600. baptized

  601. into

  602. Christ

  603. Jesus.

  604. And again,

  605. as a Baptist,

  606. I would say,

  607. and therefore

  608. should be baptized

  609. by immersion

  610. as a sign

  611. of that

  612. reality.

  613. That is,

  614. you have

  615. been

  616. immersed

  617. in

  618. Christ.

  619. That's why

  620. we immerse

  621. people in

  622. the symbolic

  623. ordinance

  624. of baptism.

  625. It's a

  626. picture of

  627. a spiritual

  628. reality.

  629. The symbolically

  630. baptized person

  631. declares,

  632. as the church

  633. declares with

  634. them,

  635. that they

  636. identify

  637. with

  638. Christ

  639. in his

  640. death

  641. death,

  642. and

  643. in

  644. his

  645. resurrection.

  646. Which

  647. brings us

  648. to our

  649. second point,

  650. which is

  651. an extension

  652. of the

  653. first.

  654. So second,

  655. Paul says,

  656. by grace

  657. alone

  658. through faith

  659. alone,

  660. we share

  661. in Christ's

  662. death

  663. and

  664. resurrection.

  665. See this

  666. here,

  667. picking up

  668. in the

  669. last half

  670. of verse

  671. three.

  672. Do you

  673. not know

  674. that all

  675. of us

  676. who were

  677. baptized

  678. into Christ

  679. Jesus

  680. were

  681. baptized

  682. into

  683. his

  684. death?

  685. We

  686. were

  687. buried

  688. therefore

  689. with him

  690. by baptism

  691. into death

  692. in order

  693. that,

  694. just as

  695. Christ

  696. was raised

  697. from the

  698. dead

  699. by the

  700. glory

  701. of the

  702. Father,

  703. we

  704. too

  705. might

  706. walk

  707. in the

  708. newness

  709. of life.

  710. For if

  711. we have

  712. been united

  713. with him

  714. in a

  715. death

  716. like

  717. his,

  718. we

  719. shall

  720. certainly

  721. be

  722. united

  723. with

  724. him

  725. in a

  726. resurrection

  727. like

  728. his.

  729. The

  730. language

  731. of verse

  732. four

  733. may be

  734. familiar

  735. to you

  736. in

  737. considering

  738. the

  739. symbolic

  740. ordinance

  741. of

  742. baptism.

  743. We

  744. say

  745. as we

  746. baptize

  747. people

  748. as a

  749. church

  750. buried

  751. with

  752. Christ

  753. in

  754. baptism

  755. raised

  756. to

  757. walk

  758. in

  759. the

  760. newness

  761. of

  762. life.

  763. This

  764. is an

  765. evidence

  766. that you

  767. are

  768. regenerate,

  769. that you

  770. belong

  771. to God

  772. in

  773. Christ

  774. Jesus,

  775. immersed

  776. in

  777. him.

  778. This

  779. is an

  780. explanation

  781. of the

  782. doctrine

  783. of

  784. regeneration.

  785. Those

  786. who have

  787. placed

  788. their

  789. faith

  790. in

  791. Christ

  792. have

  793. not

  794. physically

  795. died

  796. and

  797. resurrected

  798. but

  799. spiritually

  800. share

  801. in

  802. these

  803. realities.

  804. Paul

  805. states

  806. it

  807. this

  808. way

  809. in

  810. 2nd

  811. Corinthians

  812. chapter

  813. 5

  814. and

  815. verse

  816. 17.

  817. If

  818. anyone

  819. is

  820. in

  821. Christ,

  822. he

  823. is

  824. a

  825. new

  826. creation.

  827. The

  828. old

  829. has

  830. passed

  831. away,

  832. behold,

  833. the

  834. new

  835. has

  836. come.

  837. If

  838. you

  839. are

  840. in

  841. Christ,

  842. then

  843. you

  844. are

  845. no

  846. longer

  847. who

  848. you

  849. once

  850. were

  851. pre-

  852. Christ.

  853. You

  854. are

  855. new.

  856. You

  857. are

  858. now

  859. post-Christ,

  860. although

  861. presently

  862. Christ.

  863. Those

  864. who

  865. are

  866. in

  867. Christ

  868. have

  869. been

  870. born

  871. again.

  872. Where

  873. this

  874. phrase

  875. comes

  876. from

  877. is

  878. from

  879. John

    John 3 chapter mention

  880. chapter

  881. 3,

  882. and I'm

  883. going to

  884. read

  885. verses

  886. 1

  887. through

  888. 7.

  889. There

  890. was a

  891. man of

  892. the

  893. Pharisees

  894. named

  895. Nicodemus,

  896. a ruler

  897. of the

  898. Jews.

  899. This

  900. man

  901. came to

  902. Jesus

  903. by

  904. night

  905. and

  906. said

  907. to

  908. him,

  909. Rabbi,

  910. we

  911. know

  912. that

  913. you

  914. are

  915. a

  916. teacher

  917. come

  918. from

  919. God,

  920. for

  921. no

  922. one

  923. can

  924. do

  925. these

  926. signs,

  927. speaking

  928. of

  929. his

  930. miracles,

  931. that

  932. you

  933. do

  934. unless

  935. God

  936. is

  937. with

  938. him.

  939. Jesus

  940. answered

  941. him,

  942. truly,

  943. truly,

  944. I

  945. say

  946. to

  947. you,

  948. unless

  949. one

  950. is

  951. born

  952. again,

  953. he

  954. cannot

  955. see

  956. the

  957. kingdom

  958. of

  959. God.

  960. This

  961. is

  962. very

  963. common

  964. language

  965. to

  966. the

  967. American

  968. Christian.

  969. Imagine

  970. how

  971. strange

  972. it would

  973. have

  974. been

  975. for

  976. Nicodemus

  977. who

  978. responds,

  979. how

  980. can

  981. a

  982. man

  983. be

  984. born

  985. when

  986. he

  987. is

  988. old?

  989. Can

  990. he

  991. enter

  992. a

  993. second

  994. time

  995. into

  996. his

  997. mother's

  998. womb

  999. and

  1000. be

  1001. born?

  1002. Jesus

  1003. answered,

  1004. truly,

  1005. truly,

  1006. I

  1007. say

  1008. to

  1009. you,

  1010. unless

  1011. one

  1012. is

  1013. born

  1014. of

  1015. water

  1016. and

  1017. the

  1018. spirit,

  1019. he

  1020. cannot

  1021. enter

  1022. the

  1023. kingdom

  1024. of

  1025. God.

  1026. That

  1027. which

  1028. is

  1029. born

  1030. of

  1031. the

  1032. flesh

  1033. is

  1034. flesh!

  1035. And

  1036. that

  1037. which

  1038. is

  1039. born

  1040. of

  1041. the

  1042. spirit

  1043. is

  1044. spirit.

  1045. Do not

  1046. marvel

  1047. that I

  1048. said

  1049. to

  1050. you,

  1051. you

  1052. must

  1053. be

  1054. born

  1055. again.

  1056. So,

  1057. tying in

  1058. that we,

  1059. and Paul's

1060. going to pick this up

  1061. pretty heavily

  1062. in chapter

  1063. 8,

  1064. we're given

  1065. the spirit.

  1066. This is how we

  1067. become

  1068. regenerate.

  1069. This is how we're

  1070. baptized

  1071. into

  1072. Christ,

  1073. is that we

  1074. are given

  1075. the spirit

  1076. who makes

  1077. us new,

  1078. causes us

  1079. to believe,

  1080. we're justified

  1081. before God,

  1082. and then

  1083. we begin

  1084. to walk

  1085. in his

  1086. ways by

  1087. the power

  1088. of that

  1089. same

  1090. spirit.

  1091. If we

  1092. have been

  1093. united

  1094. with Christ

  1095. in a

  1096. death like

  1097. his,

  1098. we shall

  1099. certainly

  1100. be united

  1101. with him

  1102. in a

  1103. resurrection

  1104. like

  1105. his.

  1106. The old

  1107. self

  1108. put away,

  1109. the new

  1110. self

  1111. put

  1112. on.

  1113. Third,

  1114. Paul says,

  1115. by grace

  1116. alone,

  1117. through faith

  1118. alone,

  1119. we have

  1120. been

  1121. set

  1122. free

  1123. from

  1124. sin.

  1125. Verse 6

  1126. and 7,

  1127. he says,

  1128. we know

  1129. that our

  1130. old self

  1131. was crucified

  1132. with him

  1133. in order

  1134. that the

  1135. body

  1136. of

  1137. sin,

  1138. that old

  1139. self,

  1140. might be

  1141. brought

  1142. to nothing

  1143. so that

  1144. we would

  1145. no longer

  1146. be

  1147. enslaved

  1148. to sin.

  1149. For one

  1150. who has

  1151. died

  1152. has been

  1153. set

  1154. free

  1155. from

  1156. sin.

  1157. This is

  1158. so

  1159. important

  1160. please

  1161. note it

  1162. carefully.

  1163. If you

  1164. are in

  1165. Christ,

  1166. then you

  1167. have been

  1168. set

  1169. free

  1170. from

  1171. sin.

  1172. Sin

  1173. no longer

  1174. has power

  1175. over you.

  1176. Beloved,

  1177. we do not

  1178. cope

  1179. with our

  1180. sin.

  1181. We,

  1182. by the

  1183. power of

  1184. the Spirit,

  1185. overcome

  1186. it.

  1187. We're not

  1188. copers,

  1189. we're

  1190. overcomers.

  1191. sin

  1192. nowhere in

  1193. the Bible

  1194. is sin

  1195. justified

  1196. due to

  1197. a circumstance.

  1198. Your

  1199. circumstances

  1200. may provide

  1201. temptation,

  1202. but your

  1203. circumstances

  1204. do not

  1205. justify

  1206. your sin.

  1207. If you

  1208. are in

  1209. Christ,

  1210. you have

  1211. been set

  1212. free

  1213. from it,

  1214. and we

  1215. would do

  1216. well as

  1217. a people

  1218. to live

  1219. in the

  1220. reality

  1221. of this

  1222. truth.

  1223. Paul tells

  1224. us in

  1225. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  1226. chapter 10

  1227. and verse

  1228. 13.

  1229. It begins,

  1230. no temptation

  1231. has overtaken

  1232. you that

  1233. is not

  1234. common

  1235. to man.

  1236. And

  1237. across my

  1238. years of

  1239. ministry,

  1240. I've sat

  1241. with many

  1242. people who

  1243. act as if

  1244. they're

  1245. experiencing

  1246. a unique

  1247. temptation,

  1248. a temptation

  1249. that they

  1250. must give

  1251. into because

  1252. it's unique,

  1253. and this is

  1254. the text we

  1255. go to.

  1256. No temptation

  1257. has overtaken

  1258. you that

  1259. is not

  1260. common

  1261. to man.

  1262. We as

  1263. Christ followers

  1264. deal with

  1265. temptation.

  1266. Paul goes

  1267. on,

  1268. God is

  1269. faithful,

  1270. and he

  1271. will not

  1272. let you

  1273. be tempted

  1274. beyond your

  1275. ability,

  1276. but with

  1277. the temptation

  1278. he will

  1279. also provide

  1280. the way

  1281. of escape

  1282. that you

  1283. may be

  1284. able to

  1285. endure it.

  1286. God is

  1287. faithful in

  1288. the midst

  1289. of our

  1290. temptation

  1291. to provide

  1292. everything

  1293. that we

  1294. need

  1295. to not

  1296. sin.

  1297. We have

  1298. been

  1299. set

  1300. free

  1301. from it.

  1302. Will we

  1303. sin?

  1304. Yes.

  1305. But we

  1306. need to

  1307. stop acting

  1308. like we

  1309. have to.

  1310. Fourth,

  1311. Paul says,

  1312. by grace

  1313. alone,

  1314. through faith

  1315. alone,

  1316. Christ's

  1317. death was

  1318. sufficient

  1319. to set

  1320. us free

  1321. from sin.

  1322. This is

  1323. verse 8

  1324. to the end

  1325. of our

  1326. text.

  1327. Now,

  1328. if we

  1329. have died

  1330. with Christ,

  1331. we believe

  1332. that we

  1333. will also

  1334. live with

  1335. him.

  1336. We

  1337. know that

  1338. Christ,

  1339. being raised

  1340. from the

  1341. dead,

  1342. will never

  1343. die again.

  1344. Death

  1345. no longer

  1346. has dominion

  1347. over him.

  1348. For the

  1349. death he

  1350. died,

  1351. he died

  1352. to sin

  1353. once for

  1354. all,

  1355. but the

  1356. life he

  1357. lives,

  1358. he lives

  1359. to God.

  1360. Christ

  1361. will not

  1362. die again,

  1363. for he

  1364. has no

  1365. need

  1366. to do

  1367. so.

  1368. his

  1369. once for

  1370. all

  1371. sacrifice

  1372. was

  1373. entirely

  1374. sufficient

  1375. to set

  1376. us free

  1377. from sin.

  1378. It

  1379. accomplished

  1380. the work.

  1381. It's a

  1382. completed

  1383. work

  1384. on our

  1385. behalf.

  1386. I think

  1387. we could

  1388. meditate

  1389. for decades

  1390. on Jesus'

  1391. final word,

  1392. it is

  1393. finished.

  1394. What is

  1395. the it

  1396. that he

  1397. is talking

  1398. about there?

  1399. It's

  1400. at very

  1401. least

  1402. this.

  1403. We

  1404. have

  1405. been

  1406. set

  1407. free

  1408. from

  1409. sin

  1410. if we

  1411. have

  1412. believed

  1413. in

  1414. Christ.

  1415. So let's

  1416. think about

  1417. some

  1418. application.

  1419. One,

  1420. repent

  1421. and believe.

  1422. If you

  1423. have never

  1424. placed your

  1425. faith in

  1426. Christ for

  1427. your

  1428. justification,

  1429. your soul

  1430. is in a

  1431. desperate

  1432. state,

  1433. turn from

  1434. your sin

  1435. and flee

  1436. by grace

  1437. through faith

  1438. to Christ.

  1439. Recognize

  1440. your

  1441. wickedness

  1442. before

  1443. the holy

  1444. God.

  1445. Turn

  1446. from that

  1447. and flee

  1448. to Christ,

  1449. his sufficient

  1450. work on

  1451. your behalf.

  1452. If you

  1453. have already

  1454. done so,

  1455. when you

  1456. sin,

  1457. turn from

  1458. it and

  1459. flee by

  1460. grace

  1461. through faith

  1462. to Christ.

  1463. Beloved,

  1464. it is good

  1465. that we

  1466. take our

  1467. sin

  1468. seriously.

  1469. I think

  1470. we should

  1471. feel it

  1472. and I

  1473. think we

  1474. should feel

  1475. it deeply

  1476. when we

  1477. sin against

  1478. our God.

  1479. Some have

  1480. asked me,

  1481. how long

  1482. should I

  1483. feel that

  1484. way?

  1485. And my

  1486. answer is

  1487. always,

  1488. only as long

  1489. as it takes

  1490. for you to

  1491. repent

  1492. and believe.

  1493. Recognize

  1494. the weight

  1495. of your sin

  1496. and turn

  1497. from it.

  1498. Run

  1499. to the

  1500. finished

  1501. work

  1502. of the

  1503. cross.

  1504. So repent

  1505. and believe.

  1506. Second

  1507. application,

  1508. stop whining.

  1509. Do not

  1510. act like

  1511. you are a

  1512. victim of

  1513. your sin.

  1514. You may

  1515. be a victim

  1516. of another

  1517. sin.

  1518. I don't

  1519. mean to

  1520. say that

  1521. you are

  1522. not.

  1523. We are

  1524. sinned

  1525. against,

  1526. to be

  1527. sure.

  1528. But you

  1529. are never

  1530. a victim

  1531. of your

  1532. own.

  1533. You

  1534. willingly

  1535. sin.

  1536. When you

  1537. sin,

  1538. you willingly

  1539. do it.

  1540. If you

  1541. are in

  1542. Christ,

  1543. you have

  1544. been set

  1545. free

  1546. from your

  1547. sin.

  1548. When you

  1549. sin,

  1550. do not

  1551. act as

  1552. though Christ's

  1553. death

  1554. didn't

  1555. atone

  1556. for that

  1557. sin.

  1558. Some of

  1559. you act

  1560. as though

  1561. Christ's

  1562. work wasn't

  1563. sufficient and

  1564. that he

  1565. needs to

  1566. climb back

  1567. onto the

  1568. cross.

  1569. He

  1570. couldn't

  1571. have

  1572. possibly

  1573. paid for

  1574. this one.

  1575. He

  1576. must come

  1577. back and

  1578. die again.

  1579. remember

  1580. the

  1581. completed

  1582. work

  1583. of

  1584. Christ

  1585. on your

  1586. behalf,

  1587. the

  1588. once-for-all

  1589. sacrifice

  1590. that he

  1591. has made.

  1592. Remember

  1593. what he

  1594. started

  1595. and that

  1596. he is

  1597. sure

  1598. to keep

  1599. his

  1600. promises.

  1601. Have

  1602. the

  1603. confidence

  1604. that I

  1605. have

  1606. of God

  1607. for you.

  1608. I hope

  1609. you have

  1610. it of

  1611. yourself

  1612. that Paul

  1613. states in

  1614. Philippians

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  1615. chapter 1

  1616. and verse 6

  1617. where he

  1618. says,

  1619. I am

  1620. sure

  1621. of

  1622. this,

  1623. that he

  1624. who

  1625. began a

  1626. good

  1627. work

  1628. in

  1629. you

  1630. will

  1631. bring

  1632. it

  1633. to

  1634. completion

  1635. at

  1636. the

  1637. day

  1638. of

  1639. Jesus

  1640. Christ.

  1641. He

  1642. will

  1643. bring

  1644. us

  1645. to

  1646. that

  1647. place

  1648. where

  1649. we

  1650. get

  1651. to

  1652. put

  1653. off

  1654. the

  1655. body

  1656. of

  1657. death

  1658. and

  1659. never

  1660. have

  1661. the

  1662. baggage

  1663. of

  1664. our

  1665. flesh

  1666. any

  1667. longer

  1668. with

  1669. us.

  1670. So

  1671. repent

  1672. and

  1673. believe,

  1674. stop

  1675. whining,

  1676. third,

  1677. run.

  1678. Press

  1679. on,

  1680. beloved,

  1681. make

  1682. war

  1683. against

  1684. your

  1685. flesh.

  1686. You

  1687. should

  1688. be

  1689. greatly

  1690. encouraged

  1691. to do

  1692. so

  1693. by

  1694. 6

  1695. verses

  1696. 1

  1697. through

  1698. 10.

  1699. Having

  1700. been set

  1701. free

  1702. from it,

  1703. we have

  1704. all the

  1705. reason

  1706. in the

  1707. world

  1708. to run

  1709. towards

  1710. the

  1711. ways

  1712. of

  1713. God.

  1714. Paul

  1715. says in

  1716. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1717. chapter 3

  1718. beginning

  1719. in

  1720. verse 12,

  1721. not that I

  1722. have already

  1723. obtained

  1724. this,

  1725. he's

  1726. talking

  1727. about the

  1728. final

  1729. resurrection

  1730. from the

  1731. dead,

  1732. or am

  1733. already

  1734. perfect,

  1735. but I

  1736. press

  1737. on to

  1738. make it

  1739. my own.

  1740. I press,

  1741. I press

  1742. toward holiness,

  1743. right?

  1744. Why?

  1745. Because

  1746. Christ Jesus

  1747. has made

  1748. me

  1749. his own.

  1750. Brothers,

  1751. I do not

  1752. consider that

  1753. I have

  1754. made it

  1755. my own,

  1756. but one

  1757. thing I

  1758. do,

  1759. forgetting

  1760. what lies

  1761. behind and

  1762. straining

  1763. forward to

  1764. what lies

  1765. ahead,

  1766. I press

  1767. on toward

  1768. the goal

  1769. for the

  1770. prize of

  1771. the upward

  1772. call of

  1773. God in

  1774. Christ Jesus.

  1775. Run,

  1776. press on in

  1777. holiness for

  1778. your good

  1779. and for the

  1780. glory of

  1781. our God.

  1782. You have

  1783. been,

  1784. if you're in

  1785. Christ,

  1786. if you've been

  1787. baptized into

  1788. him,

  1789. you have

  1790. been set

  1791. free from

  1792. the power

  1793. of sin.

  1794. John Owen

  1795. once said

  1796. in closing,

  1797. do you

  1798. mortify?

  1799. Do you

  1800. make it

  1801. your daily

  1802. work?

  1803. Be always

  1804. at it

  1805. whilst you

  1806. live.

  1807. Cease not

  1808. a day

  1809. from this

  1810. work.

  1811. Be

  1812. killing

  1813. sin,

  1814. or it

  1815. will be

  1816. killing

  1817. you.

  1818. Let's pray

  1819. together.
