  1. Well, good morning. Let me invite you to take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today is Romans chapter 6, verses 11 through 14.

    Romans 6:11–14

  3. And this morning's text is the application of the previous 10 verses, which we will review and consider to help us understand verses 11 through 14.

  4. But this morning, I would like to begin with a reading of our text and a presentation of the outline for our study.

  5. And then we'll back up and get to the text itself.

  6. So Romans chapter 6, this is 11 through 14.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  7. Let me remind you before I read it, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  8. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  9. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  10. Paul writes,

  11. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.

  12. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness,

  13. but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life,

  14. and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  15. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law, but under grace.

  16. This text presents to us four exhortations toward holy living.

  17. These four exhortations or urges to do something will serve as our outline for today.

  18. So the outline is as follows.

  19. Four points.

  20. Number one, no.

  21. Number two, consider.

  22. Number three, do not present your members to sin.

  23. And number four, present yourself to God and your members to God.

  24. So if you want to shorten that, you can say, no, consider, do not present, and present.

  25. So number one, no.

  26. The very beginning of verse 11, Paul says, so you also.

  27. So the first exhortation is implied.

  28. You can find the words, consider, and present for the other three exhortations.

  29. But you will not note the word no.

  30. But I assure you that it is there.

  31. As Paul begins verse 11 with the phrase, so you also.

  32. This phrase is similar to a therefore.

  33. Therefore, in light of what I have just said, you should.

  34. So we must begin with what we ought to know if we are to live holy lives.

  35. What is it that Paul would have us know?

  36. Let's spend a bit of time looking at the previous ten verses of chapter 6 to find out.

  37. And this will be very brief because last week we addressed it at greater length.

  38. Throughout the letter thus far, Paul has been making the case that we are justified or declared righteous.

  39. Morally perfect is what that word means.

  40. I hope that phrase is not growing tired for you.

  41. It is the gospel justified by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

  42. In the previous chapter, Paul explains how the first Adam, as a representative of all humanity, brought sin into the world.

  43. And humanity inherits his sin nature.

  44. And then he goes on to talk about how the second Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ, if we are in him, serves as our representative before God, as our federal head.

  45. At every step of Paul's writing, he is anticipating objections.

  46. He asks questions and he gives answers, which is what we find him doing at the beginning of chapter 6.

  47. So let's read those first ten verses.

  48. What shall we say then?

  49. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  50. By no means.

  51. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  52. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

  53. We were buried, therefore, with him by baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

  54. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  55. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  56. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

  57. Now, if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  58. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  59. Death no longer has dominion over him.

  60. For the death he died, he died to sin once for all.

  61. But the life he lives, he lives to God.

  62. So at the beginning of chapter 6, Paul anticipates a question that may be reworded something like this.

  63. If Christ has paid the penalty for my sin and given to me his perfection, then can't I live any way I want to?

  64. And he responds emphatically, absolutely not.

  65. Then he proceeds to tell us why.

  66. Having been justified before God by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone,

  67. we have been baptized into Jesus' death and resurrection,

  68. which means that we identify with him and have been set free from the power of sin.

  69. So this is what Paul would have us know for the sake of holy living.

  70. If you are in Christ, have believed in his person and his work for the salvation of his soul,

  71. you have been fundamentally changed.

  72. This is the doctrine of regeneration.

  73. You went from dark to light.

  74. You were dead and now you are alive.

  75. You have changed in kind.

  76. You are a new creation.

  77. Your old nature has been replaced with a new nature.

  78. Before the fall, Adam and Eve were both able not to sin and able to sin.

  79. The Latin phrase for this, which I just really like,

  80. I don't share Latin to sound smart.

  81. It helps us remember things, I think.

  82. And I want you to read people who use Latin,

  83. so maybe it won't be strange to you if I introduce it to you.

  84. But the Latin phrase for Adam and Eve's state before the fall was

  85. passe non pecare, able to sin, and passe pecare, able to sin.

  86. Passe non pecare, able not to sin, and passe pecare, able to sin.

  87. After the fall, the nature of humanity changed fundamentally,

  88. and mankind became passe pecare, able to sin, only able to sin,

  89. apart from the intervening work of God.

  90. But now, having been given a new nature, by grace alone, through faith alone,

  91. in the personal work of Jesus Christ alone, right?

  92. This is not a new nature that we have earned.

  93. It's a new nature that's been granted to us.

  94. Christians are now passe non pecare, able not to sin,

  95. and still passe pecare, able to sin.

  96. And this is the state in which we live until one day

  97. we'll be entirely liberated from sin,

  98. and then we will be, at that point, only passe non pecare.

  99. This is a thing to look forward to, a glorious future for us.

  100. But now, living in that in-between, sin no longer has power over us.

  101. We are able not to sin.

  102. Until our terrestrial lives are concluded, however,

  103. we're going to find that our old nature still tugs at us from the past.

  104. Temptation begins with forgetful unbelief.

  105. And if this temptation is not met with the truth,

  106. it will give way to sin.

  107. So, we can't emphasize this enough.

  108. Knowing who you are in Christ

  109. is the very first step in living a holy life.

  110. If you have sinned,

  111. when you find yourself wrestling with sin,

  112. it's because you've forgotten who you are.

  113. You're in the midst of an identity crisis.

  114. You have suddenly begun to think

  115. that sin now has power over you

  116. when it does, in fact, have no power over you.

  117. You've been buried with Christ,

  118. and your old nature is dead,

  119. and you now have a new nature.

  120. This is the thing we're supposed to know,

  121. and it brings us to our second exhortation,

  122. is that we are to consider this knowledge.

  123. Paul says, continuing in verse 11,

  124. must consider.

  125. So, you also must consider yourselves dead to sin

  126. and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  127. There is a distinct difference

  128. between knowing something to be true,

  129. giving some measure of mental assent to it,

  130. just saying, yeah, I believe that that's true,

  131. and actually understanding that thing to be true.

  132. This exhortation to consider means

  133. that we will continually think on this truth

  134. and affirm it to be true,

  135. regardless of whether or not we experience it

  136. to be true.

  137. We could be such fickle people

  138. pushed around by our emotions,

  139. and the response to that

  140. is not to ignore emotions altogether.

  141. They can be helpful,

  142. but to see if those emotions line up with the truth

  143. and to let the truth reign in our lives.

  144. John MacArthur does a really good job at this point,

  145. and I often read things,

  146. and I think, I need to say that in other words

  147. and just go, I should just say it in their words.

  148. So, I'm going to read to you something brief

  149. from MacArthur's commentary on this passage,

  150. where he says,

  151. to help us consider,

  152. it is advantageous to note

  153. that there are a number of reasons

  154. believers often find it difficult

  155. to comprehend

  156. that they are now free from sin's bondage.

  157. Many of them do not realize

  158. that marvelous truth

  159. simply because they have never heard of it.

  160. They assume,

  161. or perhaps they've been wrongly taught,

  162. that salvation brings

  163. only transactional holiness.

  164. That because of their trust in Christ,

  165. God now regards them as holy,

  166. but that their basic relationship to sin

  167. is the same as it always was,

  168. and that it will not be changed

  169. until they go to be with Christ.

  170. That view of salvation

  171. often includes the idea that,

  172. although trust in Christ

  173. brings the believer a new nature,

  174. the old nature remains fully operative,

  175. and that the Christian life

  176. is essentially a battle

  177. between his two resident natures.

  178. This makes salvation addition

  179. rather than transformation.

  180. A second reason Christians often find

  181. it hard to believe

  182. they are actually free

  183. from the tyranny of sin

  184. is that Satan does not want them

  185. to believe it.

  186. If the enemy of our souls

  187. and the accuser of the brethren

  188. can make us think

  189. he still dominates

  190. our earthly lives,

  191. he weakens our resolve

  192. to live righteously

  193. by making it appear hopeless.

  194. A third reason Christians

  195. often find it difficult to believe

  196. they are free from sin's compulsion

  197. is that the reality

  198. of the new birth in Christ

  199. is not experiential.

  200. It is not physically observable

  201. or verifiable.

  202. Redemption is a divine

  203. spiritual transaction

  204. that may or not be accompanied

  205. by physical or emotional experiences.

  206. A believer cannot perceive

  207. or experience

  208. in any humanly verifiable way

  209. the moment of his dying

  210. and resurrection with Christ.

  211. A fourth and perhaps

  212. the most common reason

  213. why Christians find it hard

  214. to believe they are freed

  215. from sin's tyranny

  216. while they are still on earth

  217. is that their continued

  218. battle with sin

  219. seems almost constantly

  220. to contradict that truth.

  221. If they have a new

  222. holy disposition

  223. and sin's control

  224. has been truly broken,

  225. they wonder

  226. why are they still

  227. so strongly tempted

  228. and why do they

  229. so often succumb?

  230. But all of that

  231. doesn't negate

  232. the truth

  233. that if you are

  234. in Christ

  235. then you have

  236. been set free

  237. from sin.

  238. It's an accomplished

  239. reality,

  240. a once for all thing

  241. that Jesus has done

  242. for all those

  243. who believe

  244. in him.

  245. And so we not only

  246. need to know it

  247. to be true

  248. but we need to be

  249. considering it

  250. to be true

  251. and considering it

  252. to be true

  253. again and again

  254. and again

  255. and again

  256. because we are

  257. slow learners

  258. and we are quick

  259. to forget.

  260. The Christian life

  261. is a mindful

  262. life.

  263. You do not have

  264. to be educated

  265. to be a follower

  266. of Jesus.

  267. Praise God.

  268. But you will find

  269. that being a follower

  270. of Jesus

  271. will require

  272. your mental

  273. faculty.

  274. He asks of us

  275. to engage

  276. our brains

  277. that we might

  278. live

  279. holy.

  280. Let me give you

  281. a couple of other

  282. examples from this

  283. from the book

  284. of Romans

  285. which we will

  286. look at in greater

  287. detail in the future.

  288. Paul writes in

  289. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:5

  290. verse 5 and 6

  291. For those who live

  292. according to the flesh

  293. set their minds

  294. on the things

  295. of the flesh.

  296. There is this mental

  297. activity

  298. on the things

  299. of the flesh.

  300. But those

  301. who live according

  302. to the spirit

  303. set their minds

  304. on the things

  305. of the spirit.

  306. For to set the mind

  307. on the flesh

  308. is death

  309. but to set the mind

  310. on the spirit

  311. is life

  312. and peace.

  313. And without

  314. robbing a bunch

  315. of attention

  316. from that text

  317. when we get

  318. to it

  319. if we think

  320. about the types

  321. of things

  322. we should be

  323. setting our minds

  324. on the things

  325. of the spirit

  326. I just want to

  327. draw your attention

  328. to John 16

  329. 13

  330. where the spirit

  331. is called

  332. the spirit

  333. of truth.

  334. So this text

  335. these 66 books

  336. that we have

  337. canonized

  338. these are the

  339. things of the spirit

  340. and

  341. in Philippians 1

  342. 19

  343. and many other places

  344. the spirit

  345. is called

  346. the spirit

  347. of

  348. Jesus

  349. Christ.

  350. So as this text

  351. illuminates for us

  352. the person

  353. and work

  354. of Jesus

  355. these are the things

  356. we are meant

  357. to be occupying

  358. our minds with

  359. considering

  360. who we are

  361. in Jesus

  362. dead to sin

  363. and alive

  364. to God

  365. in Christ

  366. Jesus.

  367. One other place

  368. in the book of

  369. Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  370. chapter 12

  371. and verse 2

  372. here Paul says

  373. do not be

  374. conformed

  375. to this world

  376. don't be looking

  377. like this world

  378. but

  379. be transformed

  380. and he doesn't

  381. insert there

  382. by

  383. your emotions

  384. by experience

  385. he says

  386. by the renewal

  387. of your mind

  388. the engagement

  389. of your mind

  390. considering

  391. the truths

  392. of God

  393. so we are

  394. to consider

  395. and consider

  396. and consider

  397. to continually

  398. apply

  399. these gospel

  400. truths

  401. in our life

  402. that we might

  403. give ourselves

  404. to God

  405. and Paul

  406. summarizes

  407. the first

  408. ten verses

  409. of chapter 6

  410. by saying

  411. this

  412. we are to

  413. consider

  414. ourselves

  415. dead

  416. to sin

  417. and alive

  418. to God

  419. in Christ

  420. Jesus

  421. dead to sin

  422. alive to God

  423. if you are not

  424. in Christ

  425. then you are

  426. alive to sin

  427. it is the only

  428. thing you can

  429. do

  430. and you are

  431. dead to God

  432. but if you are

  433. in Christ

  434. Jesus

  435. then you are

  436. dead to sin

  437. and alive

  438. to God

  439. fundamentally

  440. changed

  441. an entirely

  442. different nature

  443. all together

  444. so

  445. having known

  446. and having

  447. considered

  448. he goes on

  449. to exhort

  450. us

  451. so thirdly

  452. do not present

  453. your members

  454. to sin

  455. verse 12 and 13

  456. he says

  457. let not sin

  458. therefore reign

  459. in your mortal

  460. body

  461. to make you

  462. obey

  463. its passions

  464. do not present

  465. your members

  466. to sin

  467. as instruments

  468. for unrighteousness

  469. now the word

  470. present

  471. can also be

  472. translated

  473. yield

  474. or

  475. offer

  476. think

  477. don't

  478. offer

  479. your members

  480. to sin

  481. in verses

  482. 12 and 13

  483. Paul seems

  484. to personify

  485. sin

  486. as a ruler

  487. on a throne

  488. that desires

  489. to control

  490. you

  491. but cannot

  492. unless

  493. you offer

  494. yourself

  495. to its

  496. service

  497. you notice

  498. that

  499. let not

  500. sin

  501. that was a name

  502. there

  503. reign

  504. in your

  505. body

  506. do not present

  507. your members

  508. to sin

  509. do not offer

  510. yourself

  511. to sin

  512. as an instrument

  513. as a tool

  514. to be wielded

  515. for unrighteousness

  516. !

  517. for the believer

  518. sin

  519. is a

  520. dethroned

  521. ruler

  522. but it is a ruler

  523. that still has

  524. power

  525. if

  526. and only if

  527. power is granted

  528. to it

  529. you see that distinction?

  530. sin no longer sits

  531. on that

  532. figurative

  533. throne

  534. it has been

  535. dethroned

  536. in the life

  537. we've been set free

  538. from the tyranny

  539. of sin

  540. but we at times

  541. and quite too often

  542. grant power

  543. back

  544. to

  545. this personified

  546. sin

  547. to reign

  548. over us

  549. Peter makes a

  550. similar

  551. exhortation

  552. in 1st Peter

  553. chapter 2

  554. verse 9

  555. and following

  556. there he says

  557. you

  558. hear the

  559. fundamental

  560. difference

  561. set apart

  562. difference

  563. are a chosen

  564. race

  565. a royal

  566. priesthood

  567. a holy

  568. nation

  569. a people

  570. for his

  571. own

  572. possession

  573. that you may

  574. proclaim the

  575. excellence of him

  576. who called you

  577. out of darkness

  578. into his

  579. marvelous light

  580. then verse 10

  581. once you were

  582. not a people

  583. but now you

  584. are God's people

  585. different

  586. fundamentally

  587. changed

  588. once you had

  589. not received

  590. mercy

  591. but now you

  592. have

  593. received

  594. mercy

  595. fundamentally

  596. changed

  597. different

  598. and then verse 11

  599. he starts with

  600. beloved

  601. those loved

  602. by God

  603. beloved

  604. I urge you

  605. as sojourners

  606. and exiles

  607. to abstain

  608. from the passions

  609. of the flesh

  610. which wage

  611. war

  612. against your soul

  613. similar exhortation

  614. rooted in

  615. who we

  616. are

  617. we then are

  618. to

  619. resist

  620. abstain

  621. from the

  622. passion

  623. of the

  624. flesh

  625. we are

  626. no longer

  627. subjects

  628. of this

  629. cruel

  630. ruler

  631. so

  632. we should

  633. not present

  634. our members

  635. to sin

  636. as instruments

  637. for unrighteousness

  638. if we rightly

  639. recognize

  640. to whom we

  641. belong

  642. and we have

  643. been set

  644. free

  645. from sin

  646. then it

  647. follows

  648. that we

  649. will not

  650. offer up

  651. our feet

  652. our hands

  653. our eyes

  654. our mouths

  655. our minds

  656. or hearts

  657. as tools

  658. or weapons

  659. for unrighteousness

  660. and this is

  661. going to be

  662. an activity

  663. in your life

  664. in the negative

  665. do not offer

  666. it up

  667. but in the positive

  668. we're to do

  669. something else

  670. number four

  671. present yourself

  672. rather than

  673. instead

  674. present yourself

  675. to God

  676. and your

  677. members

  678. to God

  679. notice verse 13

  680. and 14

  681. the last half of verse 13

  682. and 14

  683. but

  684. rather

  685. present yourselves

  686. to God

  687. as those who have been brought

  688. from death to life

  689. and your members to God

  690. as instruments

  691. for righteousness

  692. for sin

  693. will have no

  694. dominion

  695. over you

  696. since you are not

  697. under law

  698. but under grace

  699. so adversely

  700. we are to

  701. yield

  702. or

  703. offer ourselves

  704. all of us

  705. to God

  706. as tools

  707. or weapons

  708. in his hand

  709. for

  710. righteousness

  711. presenting yourself

  712. and your members

  713. to God

  714. for righteous

  715. purposes

  716. takes

  717. work

  718. and hear that

  719. it takes

  720. some effort

  721. on our part

  722. but I want to be clear

  723. it is

  724. a

  725. rested

  726. work

  727. I had a helpful

  728. conversation with my father

  729. about this

  730. yesterday

  731. it is a

  732. rested work

  733. it's a work

  734. that comes from

  735. and is fueled

  736. by

  737. the rest

  738. that we have

  739. in the gospel

  740. accomplished

  741. truth

  742. on our

  743. behalf

  744. let's be

  745. absolutely sure

  746. to get this

  747. order

  748. right

  749. we do not

  750. present ourselves

  751. to God

  752. and our

  753. members

  754. to God

  755. as instruments

  756. for righteousness

  757. hoping that God

  758. will accept

  759. our sacrifice

  760. this is not what

  761. Paul is talking

  762. about here

  763. but we do

  764. this activity

  765. as those

  766. who have

  767. been brought

  768. from death

  769. to life

  770. he roots it

  771. in that very

  772. identity

  773. Paul is so

  774. careful here

  775. he's already

  776. said it

  777. at the beginning

  778. of chapter 6

  779. but he does

  780. not want us

  781. to forget

  782. the order

  783. in which

  784. this

  785. happens

  786. right

  787. we present

  788. ourselves

  789. we present

  790. our members

  791. as those

  792. who have

  793. been already

  794. brought

  795. from death

  796. to life

  797. already

  798. have been

  799. made new

  800. by

  801. God

  802. our

  803. natures

  804. changed

  805. by God

  806. we already

  807. belong to him

  808. because when we

  809. were dead

  810. he made us

  811. alive

  812. so because

  813. we belong

  814. to him

  815. because this

  816. is true

  817. we should

  818. willingly

  819. gratefully

  820. present ourselves

  821. to him

  822. and our lives

  823. to his service

  824. we see this

  825. as a great

  826. good

  827. and it's when

  828. we don't realize

  829. who we are

  830. when we start

  831. to flip the order

  832. around

  833. that we

  834. are given

  835. to sin

  836. on this side

  837. of glory

  838. we will not

  839. arrive at

  840. sinlessness

  841. but we are

  842. by the power

  843. that God

  844. provides

  845. to strive

  846. for it

  847. and we will

  848. find that

  849. incrementally

  850. from one degree

  851. of glory

  852. to another

  853. 2 Corinthians

  854. 3.18

  855. we will

  856. look more

  857. like

  858. Jesus Christ

  859. we're being

  860. conformed

  861. into his

  862. image

  863. bit

  864. by bit

  865. by bit

  866. and this will

  867. find its

  868. full completion

  869. in glory

  870. Paul says

  871. in Philippians

  872. I'm confident

  873. of this

  874. he who began

  875. a good work

  876. in you

  877. will bring

  878. it to

  879. completion

  880. at the day

  881. of Christ

  882. who's at

  883. labor

  884. in that text

  885. God

  886. himself

  887. is at labor

  888. he will

  889. bring it

  890. to pass

  891. beloved

  892. this work

  893. ought not

  894. be

  895. laborious

  896. it ought to be

  897. fueled by

  898. joy

  899. because

  900. of the

  901. status

  902. that we

  903. have

  904. because

  905. of the

  906. completed

  907. work

  908. of Christ

  909. on our

  910. behalf

  911. let's

  912. remember

  913. Jesus'

  914. words

  915. from

  916. Matthew

    Matthew 11:28

  917. chapter

  918. 11

  919. verse

  920. 28

  921. and

  922. following

  923. come to

  924. me

  925. all who

  926. labor

  927. and are

  928. heavy laden

  929. and I

  930. will give

  931. you

  932. rest

  933. take my

  934. yoke upon

  935. you and

  936. learn from

  937. me for

  938. I am

  939. gentle

  940. and lowly

  941. in heart

  942. and you

  943. will find

  944. rest

  945. for your

  946. souls

  947. for my

  948. yoke

  949. is easy

  950. and my

  951. burden

  952. is light

  953. the Bible

  954. has lots

  955. of language

  956. for those

  957. who are

  958. wicked

  959. never

  960. finding

  961. rest

  962. but those

  963. who are

  964. in Christ

  965. are at

  966. rest

  967. and the

  968. work we

  969. do

  970. comes from

  971. it proceeds

  972. from that

  973. settled

  974. position

  975. in him

  976. no longer

  977. working for

  978. our salvation

  979. but rather

  980. working because

  981. we are

  982. saved

  983. this is an

  984. incredibly

  985. important thing

  986. to have

  987. clear and

  988. right

  989. in your

  990. mind

  991. for

  992. verse 14

  993. sin

  994. will have

  995. no

  996. dominion

  997. over you

  998. since you

  999. are not

  1000. under law

  1001. but under

  1002. grace

  1003. look again

  1004. that the

  1005. re-emphasis

  1006. of this

  1007. right

  1008. sin

  1009. has no

  1010. dominion

  1011. over you

  1012. it does

  1013. not reign

  1014. over

  1015. you

  1016. if you

  1017. are

  1018. in Christ

  1019. because you're

  1020. not under

  1021. law

  1022. but under

  1023. grace

  1024. and I think

  1025. I think

  1026. that we could

  1027. see

  1028. under the

  1029. reign of

  1030. law

  1031. or under

  1032. the reign

  1033. of grace

  1034. you see this

  1035. the submissive

  1036. position

  1037. being under

  1038. law

  1039. and contextually

  1040. I think

  1041. this is a

  1042. fair

  1043. assumption

  1044. to make

  1045. that what

  1046. he's trying

  1047. to communicate

  1048. to us

  1049. is that we're

  1050. not under

  1051. the reign

  1052. of the

  1053. law

  1054. that exists

  1055. to point

  1056. out our

  1057. sin

  1058. but we're

  1059. rather under

  1060. the reign

  1061. of grace

  1062. right

  1063. this accomplished

  1064. work having

  1065. been done

  1066. for us

  1067. who did

  1068. not deserve

  1069. it

  1070. but it has

  1071. been done

  1072. nonetheless

  1073. right

  1074. because God

  1075. is gracious

  1076. toward us

  1077. we're under

  1078. the reign

  1079. of

  1080. grace

  1081. and so

  1082. we willingly

  1083. gratefully

  1084. with joy

  1085. seek to

  1086. obey

  1087. his commands

  1088. now I want

  1089. to take a

  1090. brief glimpse

  1091. at Paul's

  1092. struggle against

  1093. sin to get

  1094. some idea

  1095. of how

  1096. our rested

  1097. work

  1098. should be

  1099. characterized

  1100. so turn with

  1101. me just

  1102. slightly to

  1103. Romans chapter

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1104. 7

  1105. it'll take

  1106. us some

  1107. weeks to

  1108. get to

  1109. this text

  1110. but remember

  1111. it really

  1112. comes on

  1113. the heels

  1114. of what

  1115. he's saying

  1116. here

  1117. in verses

  1118. 11 through

  1119. 14 of

  1120. chapter 6

  1121. Romans 7

  1122. beginning in

  1123. verse 21

  1124. he says

  1125. so I

  1126. find it

  1127. to be

  1128. a law

  1129. that when

  1130. I want

  1131. to do

  1132. right

  1133. evil

  1134. lies

  1135. close

  1136. at hand

  1137. for I

  1138. delight

  1139. in the

  1140. law of

  1141. God

  1142. in my

  1143. inner

  1144. being

  1145. but I

  1146. see in

  1147. my

  1148. members

  1149. another

  1150. law

  1151. waging

  1152. war

  1153. against

  1154. the

  1155. law

  1156. of

  1157. my

  1158. mind

  1159. and

  1160. making

  1161. me

  1162. captive

  1163. to

  1164. the

  1165. law

  1166. of

  1167. sin

  1168. that

  1169. dwells

  1170. in

  1171. my

  1172. members

  1173. wretched

  1174. man

  1175. that I

  1176. am

  1177. who

  1178. will

  1179. deliver

  1180. me

  1181. from

  1182. this

  1183. body

  1184. of

  1185. death

  1186. now

  1187. there

  1188. are

  1189. varied

  1190. views

  1191. on

  1192. what

  1193. this

  1194. text

  1195. means

  1196. and

  1197. I

  1198. just

  1199. want

  1200. to

  1201. in

  1202. brief

  1203. we'll

  1204. get

  1205. to

  1206. it

  1207. later

  1208. but

  1209. I

  1210. want

  1211. to

  1212. say

  1213. to

  1214. you

  1215. I

  1216. think

  1217. this

  1218. is

  1219. his

  1220. post

  1221. conversion

  1222. experience

  1223. walking

  1224. in

  1225. this

  1226. life

  1227. and

  1228. still

  1229. committing

  1230. sin

  1231. having

  1232. been

  1233. set

  1234. free

  1235. from

  1236. it

  1237. I

  1238. think

  1239. it's

  1240. in

  1241. that

  1242. state

  1243. that

  1244. he

  1245. says

  1246. wretched

  1247. man

  1248. that I

  1249. am

  1250. who

  1251. will

  1252. deliver

  1253. me

  1254. from

  1255. this

  1256. body

  1257. of

  1258. death

  1259. who

  1260. will

  1261. finally

  1262. and

  1263. fully

  1264. set

  1265. me

  1266. free

  1267. where

  1268. sin

  1269. is

  1270. no

  1271. longer

  1272. an

  1273. encumbrance

  1274. on my

  1275. life

  1276. anymore

  1277. and

  1278. he

  1279. says

  1280. verse

  1281. 25

  1282. thanks

  1283. be

  1284. to

  1285. God

  1286. through

  1287. Jesus

  1288. Christ

  1289. our

  1290. Lord

  1291. so

  1292. then

  1293. I

  1294. myself

  1295. serve

  1296. the

  1297. law

  1298. of

  1299. God

  1300. with

  1301. my

  1302. mind

  1303. but

  1304. with

  1305. my

  1306. flesh

  1307. I

  1308. serve

  1309. the

  1310. law

  1311. of

  1312. sin

  1313. and

  1314. then

  1315. these

  1316. uninspired

  1317. chapter

  1318. breaks

  1319. don't

  1320. help us

  1321. at this

  1322. point

  1323. I

  1324. don't

  1325. think

  1326. into

  1327. chapter

  1328. 8

  1329. he

  1330. says

  1331. verse

  1332. 1

  1333. there

  1334. is

  1335. therefore

  1336. now

  1337. no

  1338. condemnation

  1339. for

  1340. those

  1341. who

  1342. are

  1343. in

  1344. Christ

  1345. Jesus

  1346. right

  1347. so

  1348. so

  1349. even

  1350. when

  1351. we

  1352. sin

  1353. we

  1354. recognize

  1355. that

  1356. we've

  1357. been

  1358. set

  1359. free

  1360. from

  1361. the

  1362. penalty

  1363. of

  1364. that

  1365. sin

  1366. and

  1367. the

  1368. power

  1369. of

  1370. it

  1371. and

  1372. so

  1373. we

  1374. keep

  1375. on

  1376. with

  1377. joy

  1378. and

  1379. gratitude

  1380. and

  1381. levity

  1382. because

  1383. we

  1384. can

  1385. keep

  1386. on

  1387. because

  1388. there

  1389. is

  1390. no

  1391. eternal

  1392. condemnation

  1393. because

  1394. of

  1395. our

  1396. sin

  1397. verse

  1398. 2

  1399. of

  1400. chapter

  1401. 8

  1402. for

  1403. the

  1404. law

  1405. of

  1406. the

  1407. spirit

  1408. of

  1409. life

  1410. has

  1411. set

  1412. you

  1413. free

  1414. in

  1415. Christ

  1416. Jesus

  1417. from

  1418. the

  1419. law

  1420. of

  1421. so

  1422. grateful

  1423. motivation

  1424. overflowing

  1425. joy

  1426. because

  1427. of

  1428. who

  1429. we

  1430. are

  1431. in

  1432. Jesus

  1433. we

  1434. identify

  1435. with

  1436. him

  1437. if

  1438. we

  1439. have

  1440. been

  1441. buried

  1442. with

  1443. him

  1444. and

  1445. raised

  1446. with

  1447. him

  1448. we

  1449. have

  1450. been

  1451. set

  1452. free

  1453. from

  1454. the

  1455. power

  1456. of

  1457. sin

  1458. and

  1459. we

  1460. are

  1461. now

  1462. liberated

  1463. to

  1464. live

  1465. lives

  1466. that

  1467. are

  1468. pleasing

  1469. to

  1470. our

  1471. God

  1472. and

  1473. so

  1474. we

  1475. press

  1476. on

  1477. so

  1478. we

  1479. press

  1480. on

  1481. we

  1482. work

  1483. out

  1484. our

  1485. salvation

  1486. with

  1487. fear

  1488. and

  1489. trembling

  1490. for

  1491. it's

  1492. God

  1493. who

  1494. works

  1495. in

  1496. us

  1497. both

  1498. to

  1499. work

  1500. for

  1501. his

  1502. good

  1503. pleasure

  1504. we

  1505. seek

  1506. to

  1507. honor

  1508. him

  1509. with

  1510. our

  1511. lives

  1512. but

  1513. not

  1514. to

  1515. earn

  1516. his

  1517. favor

  1518. because

  1519. it

  1520. is

  1521. ours

  1522. in

  1523. Jesus

  1524. so

  1525. let me

  1526. read

  1527. the text

  1528. to you

  1529. one more

  1530. time

  1531. and I'll

  1532. close

  1533. in

  1534. prayer

  1535. so

  1536. you

  1537. also

  1538. must

  1539. !

  1540. consider

  1541. yourselves

  1542. dead

  1543. to sin

  1544. and alive

  1545. to God

  1546. in

  1547. Christ

  1548. Jesus

  1549. let

  1550. not

  1551. sin

  1552. therefore

  1553. reign

  1554. in

  1555. your

  1556. mortal

  1557. body

  1558. to

  1559. make

  1560. you

  1561. obey

  1562. its

  1563. passions

  1564. do

  1565. not

  1566. present

  1567. your

  1568. members

  1569. to

  1570. sin

  1571. as

  1572. instruments

  1573. for

  1574. unrighteousness

  1575. but

  1576. present

  1577. yourselves

  1578. to

  1579. God

  1580. as

  1581. those

  1582. who

  1583. have

  1584. been

  1585. brought

  1586. from

  1587. death

  1588. to

  1589. life

  1590. and

  1591. your

  1592. members

  1593. to

  1594. God

  1595. as

  1596. instruments

  1597. for

  1598. righteousness

  1599. for

  1600. sin

  1601. will

  1602. have

  1603. no

  1604. dominion

  1605. over

  1606. you

  1607. since

  1608. you

  1609. are

  1610. not

  1611. under

  1612. law

  1613. but

  1614. under

  1615. grace

  1616. let's

  1617. pray

  1618. together
