  1. Well, we have been preaching verse by verse through the book of Romans, and we have spent the past two weeks in chapter 6 thinking about what it means to be set free from sin.

  2. ! I have been attempting to help you see the tightrope we walk as Christians, knowing that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone and the personal work of Jesus Christ alone,

  3. but also knowing that if we have been saved, set free from the power of sin, given a new nature, then our faith will be a faith that works in the pursuit of holiness.

  4. I do not think that I have done a good job of helping the church see this careful tension over the past decade and a half.

  5. It seems to me that I have overemphasized sanctification as evidence of justification.

  6. Not an untruth, but perhaps a truth with too much emphasis.

  7. I want you to know that this comes from a desire for you to persevere, but the imbalance comes from a reaction to the cheap grace preaching of our day.

  8. Perhaps you remember me recently reading from John MacArthur's commentary.

  9. There he wrote,

  10. Perhaps the most common reason why Christians find it hard to believe they are freed from sin's tyranny while they are still on earth,

  11. is that their continued battle with sin seems almost constantly to contradict that truth.

  12. If they have a new holy disposition and sin's control has truly been broken,

  13. they wonder, why are they still so strongly tempted, and why do they so often succumb?

  14. So this morning, I want to step away from Romans 6 before we complete it, Lord willing, next week,

  15. and I just want to encourage you.

  16. The planned text for today, sufficient for the task.

  17. Verses 15 through 23.

  18. It can be accomplished there, but not the way I wrote it this week.

  19. So I'd like to labor with it a bit more that we might get that balance correct in that text.

  20. In Isaiah chapter 42 and verse 3, it is prophesied of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  21. A bruised reed he will not break,

  22. and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.

  23. And I think that most people in our church are like me, are hard on themselves.

  24. I am my own worst critic.

  25. I don't think Satan has any concern with being an accuser to me,

  26. because I take care of it all on my own.

  27. I think perhaps because we're a church that takes the Bible seriously,

  28. because we care about holiness,

  29. perhaps because people can tend to be attracted to the preaching of someone who feels the way they feel.

  30. We're kind of alike in this way.

  31. So, this morning you may feel beaten down.

  32. You may feel like the flame of your faith is just barely lit.

  33. You are in good company.

  34. I often feel this way.

  35. Many of us do.

  36. In fact, as I just searched,

  37. kind of thinking towards the end of this week,

  38. perhaps not the way I wrote Romans 6, 15 through 23.

  39. This text that were coming to my mind,

  40. things that we had preached on before,

  41. I thought, oh, that's a good, encouraging text to this point.

  42. And I would go and I would read those sermons and go,

  43. whew, that was really hard on us in that particular passage.

  44. And so I just want to be an encouragement to us today.

  45. I want to prod at us,

  46. help us to consider the completed work of Christ on our behalf.

  47. And we're going to do that by looking at Hebrews chapter 2, verse 1.

    Hebrews 2:1

  48. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved,

  49. that this is God's word to us,

  50. written for his glory and our good.

  51. And so we would do well to listen to it

  52. in order to believe its promises.

  53. Let me emphasize that part of this thing I say when I preach.

  54. Believe its promises and obey its commands.

  55. Hebrews 2 and verse 1.

  56. Therefore, we must pay much closer attention

  57. to what we have heard,

  58. lest we drift away from it.

  59. There is one exhortation or encouragement in today's text,

  60. and it is the ruling or overarching exhortation

  61. of the entire letter to the Hebrew people.

  62. The original audience for Hebrews

  63. is a church of Hellenistic Jews,

  64. think Greek-speaking Jews,

  65. that had not seen Jesus,

  66. but they had heard the gospel and believed.

  67. Most likely a small church meeting on the outskirts of Rome.

  68. They had endured much suffering to this point,

  69. and the author is anticipating that they will suffer further.

  70. So there exists among them the temptation

  71. to forsake their faith in Jesus Christ

  72. and return to Judaism.

  73. Jews practicing Judaism

  74. had long been accepted in the Roman Empire,

  75. and this remained true

  76. in the days that this letter was written.

  77. So they're being tugged at.

  78. Perhaps we can still worship God in that way,

  79. this way that won't cost us

  80. our possessions and our comfort and our lives.

  81. And apostasy had already happened in the life of the church,

  82. so there's lots of warning in this letter.

  83. And we find that there's an accompany warning in this verse.

  84. And we're not going to neglect it altogether,

  85. but we're going to focus our energy together

  86. on the exhortation from the letter.

  87. Therefore, we must pay much closer attention

  88. to what we have heard.

  89. The exhortation begins with a therefore,

  90. and as you may be thinking,

  91. how is this text meant to encourage me this morning?

  92. Well, here it is.

  93. Everything contained within that therefore.

  94. That is what is meant to be an encouragement to you today.

  95. The therefore refers back to all that the author has said

  96. of Jesus Christ in chapter 1.

  97. Now, we don't have time this morning

  98. to unpack all of chapter 1.

  99. Perhaps we could fly over it,

  100. but I think that would be unfair to you.

  101. So we're just going to look at two verses from chapter 1.

  102. Hebrews chapter 1, verse 2 and verse 3.

    Hebrews 1:2

  103. So let me read verse 1 just to get us into verse 2 and 3.

  104. Long ago, at many times and in many ways,

  105. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

  106. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son,

  107. whom He appointed the heir of all things,

  108. through whom also He created the world.

  109. He is the radiance of the glory of God

  110. and the exact imprint of His nature.

  111. And He upholds the universe by the word of His power.

  112. After making purification for sins,

  113. He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

  114. Behold, in these two verses,

  115. the supremacy and the finality of Jesus Christ.

  116. Kent Hughes, a contemporary pastor,

  117. in his commentary on this text, said,

  118. the grand theme of these verses

  119. is the supremacy of Christ as God's final word.

  120. Christ is held up like a great jewel

  121. to the sunlight of God's revelation.

  122. And as the light courses through it,

  123. seven facets flash with gleaming brilliance.

  124. Christ's supremacy and His finality

  125. is refracted for us to consider.

  126. This is the encouragement this morning,

  127. who Christ is and what He's accomplished.

  128. So let's give these seven refractions,

  129. titles, to help us in our study.

  130. Christ is, so this is an outline if you care for it.

  131. I'll repeat these.

  132. But Christ is an inheritor,

  133. a creator, a sustainer,

  134. a radiator, a representer,

  135. a purifier, and a ruler.

  136. So first, Christ is an inheritor.

  137. We see in verse 2,

  138. whom He, God, appointed the heir of all things.

  139. It follows that because Jesus is the Son of God,

  140. then He is also the heir of God.

  141. The writer of Hebrews identifies for us

  142. Jesus Christ as the anointed and Son of Psalm 2

  143. when He cites Psalm 2-7 in chapter 1 and verse 5.

  144. You are my Son.

  145. Today I have begotten you.

  146. He's referring to Psalm 2.

  147. In Psalm 2 and verse 8,

  148. the psalmist writes,

  149. Ask of me,

  150. and I will make the nations your heritage

  151. and the ends of the earth your possession.

  152. Referring to this anointed one.

  153. So Psalm 2 teaches us

  154. that the inheritance of Jesus Christ

  155. is the earth and its peoples.

  156. But Colossians chapter 1 and verse 6

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  157. teaches us that all things,

  158. so the very cosmos themselves,

  159. were created for Him.

  160. Him.

  161. But not only that, beloved,

  162. if you are in Christ Jesus,

  163. then you,

  164. specifically you,

  165. are His inheritance.

  166. You belong to Him.

  167. Through the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ

  168. on the cross,

  169. He has purchased you

  170. and He treasures you

  171. as His inheritance.

  172. In Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 18,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  173. Paul tells the Ephesian believers

  174. that He always prays

  175. that they may know

  176. what are the riches

  177. of His glorious inheritance

  178. in the saints.

  179. What an astounding truth.

  180. But not only are we Christ's inheritance,

  181. we are also His co-heirs.

  182. Heirs.

  183. In Romans 8 and verse 17,

  184. Paul calls us heirs,

  185. heirs of God

  186. and fellow heirs

  187. with Christ.

  188. Christ is the heir of all things.

  189. He is the heir of God,

  190. but as followers of Christ,

  191. we are found in Him,

  192. so we are also heirs.

  193. 1 Corinthians chapter 3,

    1 Corinthians 3:21

  194. verse 21 and following says,

  195. So let no one boast in men,

  196. for all things are yours,

  197. whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas

  198. or the world or life or death

  199. or the present or the future,

  200. all are yours,

  201. and you are Christ's,

  202. and Christ is God's.

  203. We are heirs with Christ.

  204. Secondly, Christ is creator.

  205. Verse 2 says that God created the world

  206. through Him.

  207. Not only does Christ inherit all things,

  208. but He also created all things.

  209. The Greek word here,

  210. translated world,

  211. could be more literally translated ages.

  212. And it is a wonderful word

  213. because it includes all things.

  214. Not only space,

  215. but also time.

  216. Brooke Westcott,

  217. who was a 19th century British theologian,

  218. defines this Greek word in this way.

  219. The sum of the periods of time,

  220. including all that is manifested

  221. in and through them,

  222. an order which exists through time,

  223. developed in successive stages.

  224. Everything,

  225. all of it,

  226. forever,

  227. was created by Christ.

  228. Our galaxy is an average-sized spiral galaxy.

  229. Those of you who know me

  230. know I like this kind of stuff.

  231. It's over 100,000 light years across,

  232. which is 600 trillion miles.

  233. I dare you to comprehend a number like that.

  234. 600 trillion miles across our galaxy.

  235. We can see with modern telescopes

  236. about 100,000 million galaxies.

  237. Each galaxy contains

  238. 100,000 million stars.

  239. The average distance between these galaxies

  240. is 3 million light years.

  241. This is astounding.

  242. The universe is absolutely astounded.

  243. And it was created by and for Christ.

  244. John 1 and verse 3,

  245. All things were made through Him,

  246. and without Him was not anything made

  247. that was made.

  248. 1 Corinthians 8 and verse 6,

  249. Yet for us there is one God,

  250. the Father,

  251. from whom are all things

  252. and for whom we exist,

  253. and one Lord Jesus Christ,

  254. through whom are all things

  255. and through whom we exist.

  256. Colossians chapter 1 and verse 16,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  257. For by Him all things were created,

  258. in heaven and on earth,

  259. visible and invisible,

  260. whether thrones or dominions

  261. or rulers or authorities,

  262. all things were created

  263. through Him and for Him.

  264. And Romans 11 and verse 36,

  265. For from Him and through Him

  266. and to Him are all things.

  267. To Him be glory forever.

  268. Amen.

  269. Amen.

  270. The cosmos were created

  271. that we might praise Christ.

  272. And we are a new creation, beloved,

  273. for the praise of Christ.

  274. 2 Corinthians 5 and verse 17,

  275. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

  276. he is a new creation.

  277. Behold, it's passed away.

  278. Behold, the new has come.

  279. Christ is the creator of all things,

  280. including us.

  281. A powerful word has spoken all things

  282. for the praise of God into existence.

  283. Not only is Christ the creator,

  284. He's also the sustainer.

  285. Verse 3 tells us that He upholds the universe

  286. by the word of His power.

  287. Jesus Christ created all things.

  288. And sustains them, keeps them going.

  289. He actively sustains by the word of His power.

  290. That means that Jesus says to the world,

  291. move like this.

  292. Behave like that.

  293. Rain here, snow there,

  294. and the world obeys.

  295. This means that nothing will cease to do

  296. exactly as it is told

  297. until Jesus says to do otherwise.

  298. I think that's very cool.

  299. Jonathan Edwards,

  300. one of the greatest minds

  301. that this country has ever produced,

  302. much less greatest theological minds,

  303. he's often given credit for being

  304. just one of the greatest minds,

  305. believed in something that he called

  306. continuous creation.

  307. And that was to say that he thought

  308. that the world was being created

  309. moment by moment,

  310. spoken into existence moment by moment.

  311. And to be frank,

  312. this makes my head explode

  313. because I am no Jonathan Edwards,

  314. in case you were unclear about that.

  315. But just listen to what he says.

  316. It's just fascinating.

  317. So, quote,

  318. It is plain,

  319. nothing can exert itself or operate

  320. when and where it is not existing

  321. because what is past entirely ceases

  322. when present existence begins.

  323. It does no more coexist with it

  324. than it does any other moment

  325. that had ceased 20 years ago.

  326. Here's my dumb summary of that.

  327. The past does not have the power

  328. to sustain that which is in the present

  329. or in the future.

  330. I believe that's what he just said.

  331. But he goes on.

  332. Here's the part I want to get you to.

  333. Quote,

  334. God's upholding created substance

  335. or causing its existence

  336. in each successive moment

  337. is altogether equivalent

  338. to an immediate production

  339. out of nothing

  340. at each moment

  341. because its existence at this moment

  342. is not merely in part from God

  343. but wholly from him

  344. and not in any part or degree

  345. from its antecedent existence.

  346. He's saying the past ceased to exist

  347. in the past,

  348. so the present must exist

  349. by the power of God.

  350. Now,

  351. you could rewind this idea

  352. of continuous creation

  353. and hear that whatever he's saying

  354. is that Christ,

  355. by the word of his power,

  356. holds us together.

  357. Have you ever really considered

  358. what it is that keeps us together?

  359. Why is it that our atoms exist

  360. the way our atoms exist

  361. and that those atoms exist together?

  362. There are scientific explanations for this.

  363. I understand.

  364. But I just want to posit to you

  365. that if Christ would cease

  366. holding us together

  367. by the word of his power,

  368. what makes us up

  369. would just fly off into oblivion.

  370. In a moment,

  371. it would all be gone.

  372. Christ is the sustainer.

  373. If Jesus Christ has the power

  374. to sustain the universe,

  375. the cosmos,

  376. then, beloved,

  377. he has the power

  378. to sustain our faith.

  379. As feeble as it can be at times,

  380. he can hold that together.

  381. This is why Paul was able to say

  382. with such confidence

  383. to the Philippian believers

  384. in Philippians 1-6,

  385. I am sure of this,

  386. that he who began a good work in you

  387. will bring it to completion

  388. at the day of Christ.

  389. Christ is the sustainer.

  390. Notice fourthly

  391. that Christ is the radiator.

  392. We see in verse 3,

  393. he's the radiance of the glory of God.

  394. Radiance here is a better translation

  395. than the oft-used reflection.

  396. Maybe your translation this morning

  397. says reflection.

  398. The moon reflects the light of the sun.

  399. The sun, though, radiates that light.

  400. Jesus does not merely reflect God's glory,

  401. he is part and parcel of God's glory.

  402. He is part of the source of that glory.

  403. John writes in John 1 and verse 18,

  404. no one has ever seen God,

  405. the only God, referring to Jesus,

  406. who is at the Father's side,

  407. he has made him known.

  408. The Nicene Creed,

  409. 325 A.D.,

  410. an important confession,

  411. states,

  412. we believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

  413. the only Son of God,

  414. begotten from the Father

  415. before all ages,

  416. God from God,

  417. light from light,

  418. true God from true God,

  419. begotten not made

  420. of the same essence

  421. as the Father.

  422. And this is what

  423. the biblical evidence bears out,

  424. including Hebrews 1 and verse 3.

  425. Jesus is God,

  426. so when we see Jesus,

  427. we see God.

  428. And this is an astounding reality

  429. for us living in the New Testament era.

  430. Colossians chapter 1 and verse 15 says,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  431. Jesus is the image

  432. of the invisible God.

  433. Christ is the radiator.

  434. Christ is also the representer.

  435. Verse 3 says,

  436. he's the exact imprint

  437. of God's nature,

  438. of his nature.

  439. Now this phrase balances out

  440. the previous phrase.

  441. Jesus as God's radiance

  442. speaks to his oneness

  443. with the Father.

  444. Jesus as God's representer

  445. or imprint

  446. speaks to his distinctness

  447. as the Son.

  448. So the author of Hebrews

  449. gives us a taste

  450. of the mystery

  451. that is the Trinitarian nature

  452. of God.

  453. Many people have attempted

  454. to give some analogy for this

  455. and they all fail miserably,

  456. which is why I never try.

  457. Beloved, this reality

  458. of the triune nature of God

  459. should move us

  460. to odd speculation.

  461. A God who is one

  462. but three in one.

  463. A mystery that I look forward

  464. to having unraveled

  465. in glory.

  466. I often joke,

  467. you may know,

  468. that I feel like

  469. there's going to be

  470. a frequently asked questions

  471. video when we arrive

  472. in that day.

  473. They're just going to be like,

  474. hey, wait, wait, wait,

  475. hold the questions.

  476. An old VHS will be popped in

  477. to help us understand

  478. these types of glorious truths.

  479. But I don't know

  480. that we're going to fully comprehend

  481. this one ever.

  482. It's possible

  483. that we may explore

  484. the glory of this God

  485. one but three in one

  486. forever.

  487. We might constantly be becoming

  488. new revelation,

  489. awe and wonder

  490. and worship

  491. for eternity.

  492. Now, exact imprint

  493. refers to the image

  494. on a coin made by a die.

  495. So a stamp,

  496. an exact imprint.

  497. Once again,

  498. when we see Jesus,

  499. we see God.

  500. We know how He thinks.

  501. We know how He speaks.

  502. We know how He feels.

  503. We know how He relates

  504. to mankind broadly.

  505. We know how He relates

  506. to us as His people.

  507. God has spoken to us

  508. in His Son.

  509. And listen to what Jesus says.

  510. There's one thing

  511. from Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11:28

  512. verse 28 and 29.

  513. Come to Me,

  514. all who labor

  515. and are heavy laden,

  516. and I will give you rest.

  517. Take My yoke upon you

  518. and learn from Me,

  519. for I am gentle

  520. and lowly in heart,

  521. and you will find rest

  522. for your souls.

  523. So Jesus,

  524. as the

  525. representer of God,

  526. we do have the confidence

  527. that when He speaks,

  528. He speaks to us

  529. from Him,

  530. and that we can find

  531. rest for our souls

  532. in Christ,

  533. the representer.

  534. Sixth,

  535. Christ is

  536. the purifier.

  537. Once again,

  538. verse 3

  539. says,

  540. after making

  541. purification

  542. for sins,

  543. Jesus Christ

  544. is the supreme

  545. priest.

  546. He was the agent

  547. of the purification

  548. for our sins

  549. and the sacrifice

  550. necessary

  551. for that

  552. purification.

  553. He is the supreme

  554. priest

  555. and

  556. the final

  557. priest.

  558. We no longer

  559. have a need

  560. for sacrifice,

  561. and we no longer

  562. have a need

  563. for a priest

  564. to offer that

  565. sacrifice

  566. on our

  567. behalf.

  568. That's why

  569. in this church,

  570. you will never

  571. hear an altar

  572. call,

  573. because we do

  574. not have

  575. altars

  576. in a New Testament

  577. church.

  578. Christ died

  579. once for all.

  580. The sacrifice

  581. has been made.

  582. Maybe someone

  583. will ask you

  584. to come

  585. to the stage,

  586. but there is

  587. no altar here,

  588. and there is

  589. no priest

  590. except

  591. for the Lord

  592. Jesus Christ.

  593. The author

  594. of Hebrews

  595. will go on

  596. to expand

  597. on both

  598. of these

  599. realities,

  600. that he

  601. is the

  602. sacrifice,

  603. and he

  604. is the

  605. great

  606. high priest.

  607. In his

  608. letter in

  609. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  610. chapter 10,

  611. listen to

  612. verse 11

  613. and following.

  614. There he

  615. writes,

  616. and every

  617. priest stands

  618. daily at

  619. his service,

  620. offering

  621. repeatedly

  622. the same

  623. sacrifices,

  624. which can

  625. never

  626. take away

  627. sins.

  628. They're

  629. always meant

  630. to point

  631. us to a

  632. greater

  633. sacrifice

  634. than is

  635. Christ.

  636. Verse 12,

  637. but when

  638. Christ

  639. had offered

  640. for all

  641. time

  642. a single

  643. sacrifice

  644. for sins,

  645. he sat

  646. down

  647. at the

  648. right hand

  649. of God.

  650. Sat down,

  651. so significant,

  652. waiting from

  653. that time

  654. until his

  655. enemies

  656. should be

  657. made a

  658. footstool

  659. for his

  660. feet.

  661. For by

  662. a single

  663. offering,

  664. he has

  665. perfected

  666. for all

  667. time

  668. those

  669. who are

  670. being

  671. sanctified.

  672. By that

  673. single

  674. offering,

  675. he guaranteed

  676. the purchase

  677. of his

  678. church

  679. and their

  680. perfection

  681. through time.

  682. He guaranteed

  683. the thing

  684. would be

  685. accomplished

  686. that is

  687. now

  688. being

  689. accomplished.

  690. John

    John 19 chapter mention

  691. chapter 19

  692. and verse

  693. 30,

  694. Christ said,

  695. it is

  696. finished.

  697. And he

  698. bowed his

  699. head and

  700. he gave

  701. up his

  702. spirit.

  703. Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  704. chapter 6

  705. and verse

  706. 10,

  707. for the

  708. death he

  709. died,

  710. he died

  711. to sin

  712. once

  713. for all.

  714. But the

  715. life he

  716. lives,

  717. he lives

  718. to God.

  719. He has

  720. completed it.

  721. He is the

  722. purifier.

  723. It is an

  724. accomplished

  725. work.

  726. And

  727. seventh,

  728. Christ is

  729. the ruler.

  730. He sat

  731. down,

  732. verse 3

  733. says,

  734. at the

  735. right hand

  736. of the

  737. majesty

  738. on high.

  739. Jesus

  740. Christ does

  741. not have to

  742. work as

  743. the Levitical

  744. priests

  745. work.

  746. They

  747. never

  748. sat.

  749. The

  750. temple,

  751. the

  752. tabernacle

  753. preceding

  754. it,

  755. had lots

  756. of furniture

  757. in it,

  758. with lots

  759. of purposes,

  760. not a

  761. single place

  762. to sit

  763. down.

  764. They

  765. never,

  766. they were

  767. always,

  768. when they

  769. were on

  770. their shift,

  771. continually

  772. making

  773. sacrifice

  774. for the

  775. sins

  776. of Israel.

  777. Meant to

  778. teach us

  779. something,

  780. there is a

  781. greater

  782. sacrifice,

  783. one who

  784. will

  785. come.

  786. The

  787. writer of

  788. Hebrews'

  789. words are

  790. astonishing

  791. here.

  792. Don't

  793. let this

  794. be lost

  795. on you.

  796. The

  797. original

  798. hearers of

  799. this letter

  800. would have

  801. taken such

  802. courage

  803. from this

  804. phrase,

  805. he sat

  806. down at

  807. the right

  808. hand of

  809. the majesty

  810. on high.

  811. They would

  812. have remembered

  813. that Jesus'

  814. sacrificial

  815. work is

  816. finished,

  817. completed.

  818. Romans chapter

  819. three,

  820. verse 21 and

  821. 22,

  822. but now the

  823. righteousness of

  824. God has

  825. been manifested

  826. apart from

  827. the law.

  828. Although the

  829. law and the

  830. prophets bear

  831. witness to

  832. it, the

  833. righteousness of

  834. God through

  835. faith in

  836. Jesus Christ

  837. for all

  838. who believed.

  839. It is of

  840. great significance

  841. that Jesus is

  842. at the right

  843. hand of the

  844. majesty on

  845. high.

  846. Having

  847. completed that

  848. work, the

  849. right hand

  850. historically was

  851. the place of

  852. highest honor

  853. power and

  854. power.

  855. Second only to

  856. the king was

  857. the one that

  858. sat at the

  859. right hand

  860. of the king.

  861. Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:10

  862. verse 10,

  863. he who

  864. descended,

  865. being Christ,

  866. is the one who

  867. also ascended

  868. far above all

  869. the heavens

  870. that he might

  871. fill all

  872. things.

  873. Where Jesus

  874. is now,

  875. bodily,

  876. is in what

  877. is called his

  878. session, his

  879. reign over

  880. all things.

  881. Paul tells us

  882. this session

  883. means something

  884. for us.

  885. He's doing

  886. something specific

  887. for those who

  888. believe in

  889. him.

  890. He's carrying

  891. out a specific

  892. task.

  893. Romans chapter

    Romans 8:31

  894. 8, verse 31

  895. and following,

  896. just after a

  897. grand explanation

  898. of God's

  899. elective purpose,

  900. calling together

  901. a people for

  902. his possession,

  903. says,

  904. what then

  905. shall we say

  906. to these

  907. things?

  908. If God is

  909. for us,

  910. who can be

  911. against us?

  912. He who

  913. did not

  914. spare his

  915. own son,

  916. but gave

  917. him up for

  918. us all,

  919. how will

  920. he not

  921. also with

  922. him graciously

  923. give us

  924. all things?

  925. Who shall

  926. bring any

  927. charge against

  928. God's elect?

  929. God.

  930. It is God

  931. who justifies.

  932. Who is to

  933. condemn?

  934. Christ Jesus

  935. is the one

  936. who died.

  937. More than

  938. that,

  939. who was

  940. raised,

  941. who was at

  942. the right

  943. hand of

  944. God,

  945. who indeed

  946. is interceding

  947. for us.

  948. He's making

  949. a case for

  950. us to God.

  951. He sees

  952. you in

  953. him and

  954. he says

  955. mine to

  956. God.

  957. He belongs

  958. to me.

  959. She belongs

  960. to me.

  961. Regardless of

  962. their performance,

  963. but because of

  964. mine,

  965. they are

  966. ours.

  967. So Christ

  968. is the

  969. inheritor,

  970. the creator,

  971. the sustainer,

  972. the radiator,

  973. the representer,

  974. the purifier,

  975. and the

  976. ruler.

  977. And that's

  978. what's contained,

  979. at least that

  980. is what's

  981. contained in

  982. the word

  983. therefore

  984. in Hebrews

  985. 2

  986. and verse

  987. 1.

  988. But let's

  989. look at the

  990. rest of the

  991. verse.

  992. Because of

  993. Jesus'

  994. supremacy

  995. and finality,

  996. we must

  997. pay much

  998. closer attention

  999. to what

  1000. we have

  1001. heard.

  1002. The author

  1003. of Hebrews

  1004. is referring

  1005. to all

  1006. they knew

  1007. of Jesus,

  1008. his person,

  1009. and his

  1010. work,

  1011. which he's

  1012. referring back

  1013. to in this

  1014. therefore of

  1015. verse 2

  1016. and 1.

  1017. and then

  1018. he refers

  1019. forward to

  1020. it in

  1021. chapter 2

  1022. and verse

  1023. 3 as

  1024. such a

  1025. great

  1026. salvation.

  1027. We're

  1028. to pay

  1029. much

  1030. closer

  1031. attention.

  1032. The Hebrew

  1033. verb

  1034. pay attention

  1035. is in the

  1036. present

  1037. tense,

  1038. which means

  1039. that the

  1040. author does

  1041. not have

  1042. in mind

  1043. the completion

  1044. of the

  1045. task in

  1046. any given

  1047. amount

  1048. of time.

  1049. This suggests

  1050. that one

  1051. can pay

  1052. attention,

  1053. but that we

  1054. must all

  1055. continue

  1056. paying

  1057. attention.

  1058. The work

  1059. of paying

  1060. much closer

  1061. attention

  1062. is not

  1063. a work

  1064. that will

  1065. be

  1066. completed.

  1067. We're to

  1068. pay much

  1069. closer

  1070. attention

  1071. and pay

  1072. much

  1073. closer

  1074. attention

  1075. and pay

  1076. much

  1077. closer

  1078. attention.

  1079. But note

  1080. with me

  1081. the emphasis.

  1082. Not pay

  1083. much closer

  1084. attention

  1085. to

  1086. yourself.

  1087. your successes

  1088. or your

  1089. failures.

  1090. Our faith

  1091. cannot be

  1092. sustained

  1093. if the

  1094. focus of

  1095. it

  1096. is on

  1097. ourselves.

  1098. Our faith

  1099. is sustained

  1100. by focusing

  1101. on what

  1102. we

  1103. have

  1104. heard.

  1105. Saving

  1106. and sustaining

  1107. faith must

  1108. find its

  1109. focus

  1110. on

  1111. Christ.

  1112. Just

  1113. pay attention

  1114. to what the

  1115. author of Hebrews

  1116. is saying

  1117. here.

  1118. Remember

  1119. a people

  1120. who are being

  1121. tempted

  1122. to apostatize,

  1123. to walk

  1124. away

  1125. from

  1126. the

  1127. faith.

  1128. Different

  1129. than we

  1130. may be

  1131. feeling

  1132. beat

  1133. down,

  1134. but they

  1135. were

  1136. feeling

  1137. beat

  1138. down

  1139. by being

  1140. followers

  1141. of

  1142. Christ.

  1143. And he

  1144. says to

  1145. them,

  1146. therefore

  1147. we must

  1148. pay much

  1149. closer

  1150. attention

  1151. to what

  1152. we have

  1153. heard

  1154. lest

  1155. we drift

  1156. away

  1157. from it.

  1158. Turn

  1159. your

  1160. focus

  1161. on

  1162. Christ

  1163. so

  1164. that

  1165. you

  1166. will

  1167. not

  1168. drift.

  1169. And we

  1170. don't

  1171. want to

  1172. ignore

  1173. that

  1174. warning.

  1175. We're

  1176. just

  1177. going

  1178. to

  1179. minimize

  1180. it

  1181. a bit

  1182. this

  1183. morning.

  1184. But there

  1185. is a

  1186. warning

  1187. there

  1188. that

  1189. accompanies

  1190. this

  1191. exhortation

  1192. lest

  1193. we

  1194. drift

  1195. away

  1196. from

  1197. it.

  1198. The

  1199. picture

  1200. the

  1201. author

  1202. is

  1203. painting

  1204. here

  1205. is of

  1206. a

  1207. ship

  1208. safe

  1209. at

  1210. harbor

  1211. not

  1212. having

  1213. its

  1214. anchor

  1215. properly

  1216. set,

  1217. slowly

  1218. moving

  1219. out

  1220. toward

  1221. the

  1222. danger

  1223. of

  1224. the

  1225. sea,

  1226. imperceptibly

  1227. being

  1228. drug

  1229. in

  1230. that

  1231. direction.

  1232. Now

  1233. the

  1234. ship

  1235. was a

  1236. common

  1237. early

  1238. symbol

  1239. of the

  1240. church.

  1241. You

  1242. can

  1243. see

  1244. some

  1245. examples

  1246. of

  1247. this.

  1248. 1

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1249. Peter

  1250. chapter

  1251. 3

  1252. Peter

  1253. makes

  1254. a

  1255. connection

  1256. between

  1257. Noah

  1258. and

  1259. his

  1260. family

  1261. being

  1262. carried

  1263. safely

  1264. through

  1265. the

  1266. flood

  1267. and

  1268. the

  1269. church

  1270. being

  1271. in

  1272. Jesus

  1273. Christ.

  1274. Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  1275. chapter

  1276. 4

  1277. Jesus

  1278. calms

  1279. a

  1280. storm,

  1281. a

  1282. little

  1283. tossed

  1284. ship

  1285. on a

  1286. troubled

  1287. sea.

  1288. When

  1289. the symbol

  1290. of the

  1291. cross

  1292. had to

  1293. be

  1294. hidden,

  1295. it

  1296. could

  1297. be

  1298. easily

  1299. disguised

  1300. in the

  1301. mast

  1302. of a

  1303. ship.

  1304. And this

  1305. constantly

  1306. happened.

  1307. They put

  1308. crosses

  1309. in those

  1310. masts

  1311. of the

  1312. ship.

  1313. Brothers

  1314. and sisters,

  1315. this picture

  1316. of drifting

  1317. is meant

  1318. to elicit

  1319. imagery

  1320. of subtle

  1321. movement,

  1322. of movement

  1323. toward danger

  1324. made by

  1325. degrees

  1326. and increments

  1327. at a

  1328. time.

  1329. And so,

  1330. we must pay

  1331. much closer

  1332. attention and

  1333. continue

  1334. doing it

  1335. lest we

  1336. drift

  1337. from it.

  1338. later in

  1339. Hebrews,

  1340. the author

  1341. writes in

  1342. chapter 6

  1343. and verse 19

  1344. and following,

  1345. we have

  1346. this as

  1347. a sure

  1348. and steady

  1349. anchor

  1350. of the

  1351. soul,

  1352. a hope

  1353. that enters

  1354. into the

  1355. inner place

  1356. behind the

  1357. curtain

  1358. where Jesus

  1359. has gone

  1360. as a

  1361. forerunner

  1362. on our

  1363. behalf.

  1364. So notice

  1365. again that

  1366. language.

  1367. He's trying

  1368. to draw

  1369. us to

  1370. this careful

  1371. consideration,

  1372. this closer

  1373. attention

  1374. to Christ

  1375. himself,

  1376. his person

  1377. and his

  1378. work.

  1379. Him

  1380. being

  1381. the

  1382. anchor

  1383. because we

  1384. don't want

  1385. to drift

  1386. from him.

  1387. In Hebrews

    Hebrews 6:7

  1388. 6,

  1389. verse 7

  1390. and following,

  1391. having just

  1392. spoken of the

  1393. apostate,

  1394. the author

  1395. of Hebrews

  1396. uses a

  1397. different

  1398. metaphor.

  1399. Here he

  1400. says,

  1401. for land

  1402. that has

  1403. drunk of

  1404. the rain

  1405. that often

  1406. falls on

  1407. it and

  1408. produces

  1409. a crop

  1410. useful to

  1411. those who

  1412. forsake it

  1413. as cultivated

  1414. receives a

  1415. blessing

  1416. from God.

  1417. But if it

  1418. bears thorns

  1419. and thistles,

  1420. it is worthless

  1421. and near to

  1422. being cursed

  1423. and its

  1424. end is

  1425. to be

  1426. burned.

  1427. There's the

  1428. drifting

  1429. taking place

  1430. there.

  1431. Let us be

  1432. careful lest

  1433. we drift.

  1434. Paul speaks

  1435. of the same

  1436. concern in his

  1437. first letter

  1438. to Timothy.

  1439. Chapter 1

  1440. and verse 19,

  1441. Paul makes

  1442. mention of

  1443. Hymenaeus

  1444. and Alexander

  1445. who made

  1446. shipwreck

  1447. of their

  1448. faith by

  1449. rejecting

  1450. faith and

  1451. a good

  1452. conscience.

  1453. And then

  1454. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6:20

  1455. chapter 6

  1456. verse 20

  1457. and 21

  1458. he says,

  1459. O Timothy,

  1460. guard the

  1461. deposit

  1462. entrusted

  1463. to you.

  1464. Avoid

  1465. the irreverent

  1466. babble

  1467. and contradictions

  1468. of what is

  1469. falsely

  1470. called

  1471. knowledge.

  1472. For by

  1473. professing

  1474. it,

  1475. some have

  1476. swerved

  1477. from the

  1478. faith.

  1479. Back to

  1480. Hebrews 6

    Hebrews 6:9

  1481. verse 9,

  1482. though we

  1483. speak in

  1484. this way

  1485. of this

  1486. good

  1487. cultivated

  1488. soil

  1489. and this

  1490. thorn

  1491. producing

  1492. soil,

  1493. he says

  1494. there,

  1495. yet in

  1496. your

  1497. case,

  1498. beloved,

  1499. we feel

  1500. sure of

  1501. better things,

  1502. things that

  1503. belong to

  1504. salvation.

  1505. So how do

  1506. we ensure

  1507. that we are

  1508. not drifters?

  1509. Therefore,

  1510. we must pay

  1511. much closer

  1512. attention to

  1513. what we have

  1514. heard lest

  1515. we drift

  1516. away from

  1517. it.

  1518. Love the

  1519. person and

  1520. work of

  1521. Jesus

  1522. Christ.

  1523. You

  1524. will

  1525. serve

  1526. what you

  1527. love.

  1528. Set your

  1529. gaze on

  1530. him.

  1531. Recognize

  1532. that all

  1533. the promises

  1534. of God

  1535. are confirmed

  1536. in his

  1537. completed

  1538. work.

  1539. Consider it

  1540. and consider

  1541. it and

  1542. consider it

  1543. and surround

  1544. yourself with

  1545. people who

  1546. are doing

  1547. the same

  1548. and will

  1549. help you

  1550. do this.

  1551. People who

  1552. will speak

  1553. the truth

  1554. to you

  1555. when you

  1556. most desperately

  1557. need to

  1558. hear it.

  1559. Christ is

  1560. the inheritor,

  1561. the creator,

  1562. the sustainer,

  1563. the radiator,

  1564. the purifier,

  1565. and the

  1566. ruler.

  1567. In

  1568. closing,

  1569. I would

  1570. like to

  1571. read to

  1572. you a

  1573. prayer from

  1574. the Valley

  1575. of Vision,

  1576. which is a

  1577. collection of

  1578. Puritan

  1579. prayers.

  1580. And I

  1581. want you

  1582. just to

  1583. note the

  1584. great

  1585. humility and

  1586. self-awareness

  1587. and recognition

  1588. of frailty

  1589. of this

  1590. author.

  1591. The

  1592. attitude of

  1593. his heart,

  1594. which I

  1595. will assume

  1596. led him to

  1597. pay much

  1598. closer.

  1599. attention.

  1600. This is

  1601. the prayer.

  1602. You are

  1603. the blessed

  1604. God,

  1605. happy in

  1606. yourself,

  1607. source of

  1608. happiness in

  1609. your creatures,

  1610. my maker,

  1611. benefactor,

  1612. proprietor,

  1613. upholder.

  1614. You have

  1615. produced and

  1616. sustained me,

  1617. supported and

  1618. indulged me,

  1619. saved and

  1620. kept me.

  1621. you are in

  1622. every situation

  1623. able to

  1624. meet my

  1625. needs and

  1626. miseries.

  1627. May I

  1628. live by

  1629. you,

  1630. live for

  1631. you,

  1632. never be

  1633. satisfied with

  1634. my Christian

  1635. progress,

  1636. but as I

  1637. resemble Christ

  1638. and may

  1639. conformity to

  1640. his principles,

  1641. temper and

  1642. conduct grow

  1643. hourly in

  1644. my life.

  1645. Let your

  1646. unexampled

  1647. love constrain

  1648. me into

  1649. holy obedience

  1650. and render

  1651. my duty,

  1652. my delight.

  1653. If others

  1654. deem my

  1655. faith folly,

  1656. my meekness

  1657. infirmity,

  1658. my zeal

  1659. madness,

  1660. my hope

  1661. delusion,

  1662. my actions

  1663. hypocrisy,

  1664. may I

  1665. rejoice to

  1666. suffer for

  1667. your name.

  1668. Keep me

  1669. walking

  1670. steadfastly

  1671. towards the

  1672. country of

  1673. everlasting

  1674. delights,

  1675. that paradise

  1676. land which

  1677. is my true

  1678. inheritance.

  1679. Support me

  1680. by the

  1681. strength of

  1682. heaven that

  1683. I may never

  1684. turn back

  1685. or desire

  1686. false pleasures

  1687. that will

  1688. disappear

  1689. into nothing.

  1690. As I

  1691. pursue my

  1692. heavenly journey

  1693. by your

  1694. grace,

  1695. let me be

  1696. known as

  1697. a man with

  1698. no aim but

  1699. that of a

  1700. burning desire

  1701. for you and

  1702. the good and

  1703. salvation of

  1704. my fellow men.

  1705. Let's close

  1706. in prayer.
