  1. Good morning. This morning we'll be in Romans chapter 1 through 6. Can you take a copy of God's word and turn there with me please?

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. One thing that Shai and I enjoy to do is puzzles. We've not done many of them, but when we do, we really enjoy getting together and do them.

  4. More her than me, though. When putting together a puzzle, typically we find all the

  5. end pieces and try to get them aligned and fit together. And when the border is connected, we can see how all the interior pictures kind of fit together.

  6. So this morning, as we move forward in Romans to chapter 7, I thought it'd be really helpful if we spend a little bit of time reviewing chapters 1 through 6,

  7. so that we can get the structural bearings on the whole book. So as we come to chapter 7, when we're studying the book and we're going through it,

  8. it makes sense what was said previously. It helps us understand what is said in chapter 7.

  9. So my hope this morning is to take on that daunting task of reviewing chapters 1 through 6.

  10. And I hope that during this time we'll see where Paul is going, how is he building this grand argument,

  11. and that our hearts would be reminded and enriched in the gospel that we've heard thus far

  12. in Romans chapters 1 through 6.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  13. When Nathan began to teach the book of Romans, and as he has been preaching it,

  14. he's often told us the theme of the book of Romans is the gospel.

  15. And Luther said it is the purest of gospels, and that we should ponder this book all the time.

  16. Nathan said the theme of the whole book is salvation is by grace alone,

  17. through faith alone, and Christ alone.

  18. So this morning, the theme that we're going to be unpacking chapter by chapter

  19. is that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  20. To help us with this and with the amount of scripture we're going through,

  21. I provided an outline this morning.

  22. So if you open your bulletins, you can find that outline,

  23. and it'll provide the ways in which we see this truth explained.

  24. In that outline, the points are,

  25. The glory of the gospel, Romans 1, 16 through 17.

  26. God's righteousness against sin, Romans 1, 18 through 3, 20.

  27. Justification by grace, through faith, in Christ, Romans 3, 21 through Romans 5, 11.

  28. The basis of our justification, federal headship, Romans 5, 1 through 21.

  29. The basis of our justification, union with Christ, Romans 6, 1 through 21.

  30. And as we go through this, just to remind you, this is a big arching overview,

  31. so it'll be a little less experiential in application.

  32. But my hope is, as we go into chapter 7 next week, and the week after,

  33. that there'll be lots more application in the text.

  34. So point number one, the glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ, Romans 1, 16 through 17.

  35. Romans 1, 16 and 17 provide the theme and the summary of the whole book.

  36. Paul sets out and says, this is what the book is about.

  37. And then the chapters have to explain the truths found in Romans 1, 16 through 17.

  38. And I believe what he's saying is, look at the gloriness of this gospel that we have, that we possess.

  39. Verses 16 through 17 say,

  40. I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  41. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  42. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  43. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  44. Paul is asserting that we should not have any shame over the good news that we possess,

  45. but we should glory in it.

  46. It should be something that causes us to rejoice in, to embrace, to treasure.

  47. The gospel is the announcement of good news that brings salvation.

  48. It rescues, redeems, and reconciles.

  49. It liberates, empowers, and secures.

  50. It motivates, convicts, and assures.

  51. Brothers, this gospel is powerful.

  52. And it is at work, even now, in our hearts, sanctifying us, calling us to the glorious grace of our King Jesus.

  53. So we see this with two ways in the first two verses that we're going over.

  54. The first is we see the glory of the gospel is without distinction.

  55. The gospel was first proclaimed to the Jews, but through the Torah, the prophets, and the writings,

  56. they had the prophecies, they had the covenants, and all this points them to a coming Messiah.

  57. But it wasn't just for the Jews.

  58. Paul's making the point that it is for all who believe.

  59. Colossians 3.11 says,

  60. There is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free,

  61. but Christ is all and in all.

  62. And Romans 3.28-29 says,

  63. And Paul's response is,

  64. Yes, God is God of the Gentiles also.

  65. The gospel does not discriminate.

  66. It is for all peoples and all nations.

  67. Every tongue, tribe, language, and people will be present at the Feast of the Lamb.

  68. The gospel motivates us to share the good news with the poor and the rich,

  69. with the American, the African, and the Asian,

  70. with the Jew and the Muslim,

  71. so that Christ is in all and is all.

  72. It is the gospel of the Gentiles also, without distinction.

  73. It is this that we see as faithful to our God that drives us to send missionaries,

  74. that drives us to send people throughout the whole world and to give up the people we love

  75. so that every tribe and tongue would hear

  76. and that every tribe and tongue would believe in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  77. Secondly, we see that the gospel is one that is apart from works or without works.

  78. The gospel is not a message of law, but of grace.

  79. It is a message that the righteous shall live by faith.

  80. In the gospel, the righteousness of Christ is imputed or credited to those who believe.

  81. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, and not of our own doing.

  82. And we see this in Galatians 2.15.

  83. It says,

  84. The rest of the book of Romans demonstrates how we are saved by grace,

  85. through faith, and Christ alone.

  86. The gospel is for all peoples and not based on the will or works of man,

  87. but on the God who saves.

  88. In application to this first point,

  89. we should think often about the gospel that has saved us.

  90. Think often about our position before God that is based on grace,

  91. through faith,

  92. in Jesus Christ alone.

  93. And it should cause us deep gratitude,

  94. should promote great gratitude in our heart,

  95. and even abound in joy.

  96. Our hearts should be aflamed by the gospel of our Lord.

  97. The song by Sovereign Grace called,

  98. I Will Glory My Redeemer,

  99. expresses these verses beautifully.

  100. It's on the back of your bulletin if you'd like to read along with me.

  101. It says,

  102. I will glory in my redeemer,

  103. whose priceless blood has ransomed me.

  104. Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails

  105. and hung him on that judgment tree.

  106. I will glory in my redeemer,

  107. who crushed the power of sin and death,

  108. my only savior before the holy judge,

  109. the lamb who is my righteousness,

  110. the lamb who is my righteousness.

  111. I will glory in my redeemer,

  112. my life he bought,

  113. my love he owns.

  114. I have no longings for another,

  115. I'm satisfied in him alone.

  116. Yes,

  117. I will glory in my redeemer,

  118. his faithfulness,

  119. my standing place.

  120. Though foes are many rush upon me,

  121. my feet are firm held by his grace.

  122. My feet are firm held by his grace.

  123. I will glory in my redeemer,

  124. who carries me on eagle's wings.

  125. He crowns my life with love and kindness.

  126. His triumph song I'll ever sing.

  127. And I will glory in my redeemer,

  128. who waits for me at gates of gold.

  129. And when he calls me,

  130. it will be paradise,

  131. his face forever to behold.

  132. We have a glorious gospel.

  133. So let us glory in our redeemer,

  134. who has saved us by grace through faith.

  135. This salvation is without distinction

  136. and without works.

  137. Point number two,

  138. God's righteousness against sin,

  139. Romans 1.18 through 3.20.

  140. Paul is about to explain

  141. the great love that is found in the gospel

  142. and the amazing grace that we have through it.

  143. But first,

  144. he must state the problem.

  145. For someone to know the remedy,

  146. they need to know the disease.

  147. For us to treasure grace,

  148. we need to know why we need it.

  149. We need to know the problem.

  150. Paul begins by putting forth bad news.

  151. This says that all have sinned

  152. and all are held accountable for their sin.

  153. So first,

  154. we see that all have sinned.

  155. The first three chapters of Romans

  156. is very clear that all have sinned.

  157. And we get to verse 23 of chapter 3.

  158. It says,

  159. all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  160. The Puritan Ralph Benning,

  161. in his book,

  162. The Sinfulness of Sin,

  163. says,

  164. Sin is the transgression of God's law.

  165. Sin is contrary to God.

  166. Sin is contrary to the works of God,

  167. to the law and the will of God,

  168. to the image of God,

  169. to the people and children of God,

  170. and is set against the glory of God.

  171. Benning makes a really keen insight for us to note

  172. that we see in Romans chapter 1 through 3

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  173. that when we look at sin,

  174. we need to see it in reference to its God orientation.

  175. Who is sin ultimately against?

  176. So in Romans 1 through 3,

  177. God has universally revealed himself to all peoples.

  178. Instead of exalting in his glory

  179. through knowing,

  180. esteeming,

  181. loving,

  182. rejoicing,

  183. and praising him,

  184. we see in verse 18

  185. that these people have suppressed the truth.

  186. And in verse 23 of chapter 1,

  187. we see they have exchanged

  188. the glory of the immortal God

  189. for his creation.

  190. Man has rejected God

  191. and has failed to give thanks or honor to him

  192. is what chapter 1 is telling us.

  193. And due to man's rebellion,

  194. God gave man over to his impurities

  195. and the lusts of his heart.

  196. Joel Beeky,

  197. in a way that is very much convictional,

  198. says this regarding our perspective of sin.

  199. Today,

  200. sin is often lamented over

  201. because of its consequences.

  202. Since it destroys marriages,

  203. ruins lives,

  204. and wrecks havoc on God's good order,

  205. people grieve over the temporal consequences of sin

  206. and what it does in our fallen world.

  207. But few sigh and cry

  208. over the abomination of sin

  209. because it is such an offense against God.

  210. David cried against thee,

  211. thee only,

  212. have I sinned.

  213. When you become aware of your sin,

  214. what grieves you more,

  215. that it causes harm to you and others,

  216. or that it offends and grieves the heart of God?

  217. The Puritans often viewed

  218. the gravity of sin in proportion

  219. to the infitude of God's majesty.

  220. Since God is infinitely glorious

  221. and majestic and holy and righteous,

  222. sin is unspeakably heinous.

  223. And they often talked about this point.

  224. In Romans 1 through 3,

  225. we're reminded that sin is egregious.

  226. And our sin is ultimately aimed toward God.

  227. But sin is wicked,

  228. not because of its temporal effect,

  229. though that is devastating.

  230. Sin is wicked because of the eternal object it's against,

  231. the God of the universe.

  232. In chapter 3,

  233. Paul begins to explain

  234. that our sin problem

  235. is much worse than actions that we do.

  236. Our sin problem is actually a condition

  237. that we're born in,

  238. a condition that we possess.

  239. We call this condition

  240. the doctrine of total depravity.

  241. Total depravity does not teach

  242. that we are as evil

  243. or as depraved

  244. or as bad

  245. as we could be,

  246. but that all of creation

  247. has been affected

  248. by the corruption of sin.

  249. It teaches that sin

  250. has affected

  251. the totality of creation.

  252. We are born into

  253. this sinful condition

  254. and its effects

  255. corrupt the whole person,

  256. both our body

  257. and our soul.

  258. We see this

  259. in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3:9–18

  260. verses 9 through 18,

  261. if you'll read with me.

  262. What then,

  263. are we Jews any better off?

  264. No,

  265. not at all.

  266. We have already

  267. charged that all,

  268. but Jews and Greeks

  269. are under sin.

  270. As it is written,

  271. none is righteous,

  272. no,

  273. not one.

  274. No one understands,

  275. no one seeks for God.

  276. All have turned aside,

  277. together they have become worthless.

  278. No one does good,

  279. not even one.

  280. Their throat

  281. is an open grave.

  282. They use their tongues

  283. to deceive.

  284. The venom of asp

  285. is under their lips.

  286. Their mouth

  287. is full of curses

  288. and bitterness.

  289. Their feet

  290. are swift

  291. to shed blood

  292. and their paths

  293. are ruin and misery.

  294. In the way of peace

  295. they have not known.

  296. There is no fear

  297. of God

  298. before their eyes.

  299. It is a scary place

  300. to be

  301. when there is no fear

  302. of God

  303. in man.

  304. Secondly,

  305. we see in Romans 1 through 3

  306. that all

  307. are held accountable.

  308. So all have sinned

  309. and all

  310. are held accountable.

  311. In Romans 1.18

  312. it says,

  313. for the wrath

  314. of God

  315. is revealed

  316. from heaven

  317. against all

  318. ungodliness

  319. and unrighteousness

  320. of men

  321. who by their

  322. unrighteousness

  323. suppress the truth.

  324. God has revealed

  325. his wrath

  326. against all

  327. unrighteousness.

  328. In Romans 3.9-18

  329. he describes

  330. all as being

  331. under sin.

  332. In fact,

  333. verse 10 says,

  334. no one

  335. is righteous.

  336. All have sinned,

  337. all are under sin,

  338. and all will be

  339. held accountable

  340. before God.

  341. This is exactly

  342. what verses 19-20

  343. of chapter 3 tell us.

  344. Now we know

  345. that whatever the law

  346. says,

  347. it speaks to those

  348. who are under the law,

  349. so that every mouth

  350. may be stopped

  351. and the whole world

  352. may be held

  353. accountable to God.

  354. For by the works

  355. of the law

  356. no human being

  357. will be justified

  358. in his sight,

  359. since through the law

  360. comes the knowledge

  361. of sin.

  362. This is bad news.

  363. In our own works

  364. and efforts

  365. we have all sinned

  366. and we have all

  367. experienced

  368. the wrath of God

  369. in ourselves.

  370. There is not a scale

  371. of right or wrongs

  372. that our future

  373. eternity is based upon.

  374. There is an infinitely

  375. wise, holy,

  376. and righteous God

  377. and any act of sin

  378. is treason

  379. and is unspeakably

  380. heinous.

  381. God's righteousness

  382. against sin

  383. leaves us desperate,

  384. it leaves us condemned,

  385. and it leaves us

  386. silent.

  387. Seeing our ruin

  388. to stay under sin

  389. gives us

  390. great need

  391. for a savior.

  392. seeing the problem,

  393. the disease,

  394. gives us great need

  395. for the remedy,

  396. for the glorious gospel.

  397. God's righteousness

  398. against sin

  399. points us

  400. to the glory

  401. and beauty

  402. of salvation

  403. by grace alone

  404. through faith alone.

  405. So point number three,

  406. justification

  407. by grace

  408. through faith

  409. in Christ.

  410. we see a severe

  411. ending to verse 20

  412. that all will be

  413. held accountable

  414. and all mouths

  415. will be stopped

  416. before the king

  417. of the universe.

  418. But he begins

  419. in 21

  420. and 22

  421. with hope.

  422. He begins to

  423. lay down our hope

  424. that we have

  425. in Christ,

  426. that we are justified

  427. by grace

  428. through faith.

  429. So first we see

  430. that we are justified

  431. by grace

  432. in Christ.

  433. Christ.

  434. And the remedy

  435. for us

  436. is present

  437. in verse 22

  438. of chapter 3.

  439. The righteousness

  440. of God

  441. through faith

  442. in Jesus Christ

  443. for all who believe.

  444. In verses 23

  445. through 26

  446. Paul explains

  447. how God's righteousness

  448. in Jesus Christ

  449. saves us.

  450. We are all unrighteous,

  451. we all deserve

  452. the eternal wrath

  453. of God

  454. for our sins.

  455. That's what verse 23

  456. tells us,

  457. all is sin

  458. and falling short

  459. of the glory of God.

  460. Every one of us

  461. would stand

  462. before our king

  463. with our mouths shut

  464. and our awful deaths

  465. before us

  466. and he would be right

  467. to condemn us.

  468. He would be right

  469. to stamp the gavel

  470. and say that we

  471. are in sin

  472. and we deserve his wrath.

  473. He would be right

  474. to sentence us

  475. to hell.

  476. It's a somber reality

  477. if we think deeply

  478. about sin

  479. and its weight.

  480. But then in verse 24

  481. we see something change

  482. in the letter.

  483. We see this beautiful thing

  484. that God has justified

  485. by grace

  486. as a gift.

  487. But our God

  488. has done something

  489. for us

  490. through his great love

  491. and abundant mercy

  492. he has provided us

  493. redemption

  494. by his grace.

  495. So if you read

  496. verse 24 and 26

  497. with me

  498. and are justified

  499. by his grace

  500. as a gift

  501. through the redemption

  502. that is in Christ Jesus

  503. whom God put forward

  504. as a propitiation

  505. by his blood

  506. to be received

  507. by faith.

  508. This was to show

  509. God's righteousness

  510. because in his divine

  511. forbearance

  512. he passed over

  513. former sins.

  514. It was to show

  515. his righteousness

  516. at the present time

  517. so that he might be

  518. the just and justifier

  519. of the one

  520. who has faith

  521. in Jesus.

  522. Jesus Christ

  523. was put forward

  524. as a propitiation

  525. as a gift

  526. of grace

  527. for you.

  528. The word propitiation

  529. is an offering

  530. that was sacrificed

  531. to appease sin.

  532. In a propitiation

  533. the offering

  534. would be brought forth

  535. and the sin

  536. would be appeased

  537. through the offering.

  538. We have all sinned

  539. and deserve God's wrath.

  540. We ourselves

  541. were objects

  542. of wrath.

  543. God put forward

  544. Jesus

  545. in our place

  546. to bear that wrath

  547. for us.

  548. That's propitiation

  549. that we deserve

  550. to be

  551. the object

  552. of eternal wrath.

  553. But God

  554. put forward

  555. in his great love

  556. and mercy

  557. Jesus Christ.

  558. And Jesus Christ

  559. was the object

  560. of wrath

  561. on the cross.

  562. God in his justice

  563. poured out

  564. his judgment

  565. on Christ

  566. for our sake.

  567. At the cross

  568. when our redemption

  569. was accomplished

  570. Jesus died

  571. for every sin

  572. of his people

  573. for all those

  574. who believe

  575. the past

  576. the present

  577. and the future sins.

  578. His sacrifice

  579. was once

  580. and for all.

  581. Jesus on the cross

  582. bore this punishment

  583. for all

  584. our sinful thoughts

  585. all our wicked deeds

  586. words and actions.

  587. So that means

  588. brother and sister

  589. every thought

  590. you've had

  591. that was ill

  592. that was towards

  593. someone else

  594. any slanderous word

  595. any deed

  596. you've committed

  597. those things

  598. that you want

  599. to feel condemned

  600. for because

  601. you've done wrong

  602. if you have

  603. faith in Jesus

  604. all those things

  605. those words

  606. those thoughts

  607. and those actions

  608. have been cancelled.

  609. It says our record

  610. is cancelled

  611. in Christ.

  612. Paul begins

  613. to go back

  614. to the gospel

  615. in chapter 5

  616. Romans 5.8

  617. says

  618. God shows

  619. his love

  620. for us

  621. and that while

  622. we're sinners

  623. Christ died

  624. for us.

  625. In the death

  626. of Christ

  627. we have been

  628. reconciled

  629. to God

  630. and he was

  631. delivered up

  632. for our

  633. trespasses.

  634. In his resurrection

  635. we have received

  636. life and righteousness

  637. and he was raised

  638. for our justification.

  639. Romans 5.9-11

  640. explains this

  641. wonderful reality

  642. for us

  643. if you'll read

  644. there with me.

  645. Since therefore

  646. we have now

  647. been justified

  648. by his blood

  649. much more

  650. shall we be

  651. saved by him

  652. from the wrath

  653. of God.

  654. For if while

  655. we were enemies

  656. we were reconciled

  657. to God

  658. by the death

  659. of his son

  660. much more

  661. now that

  662. we are reconciled

  663. shall we be

  664. saved by his

  665. life.

  666. More than that

  667. we also rejoice

  668. in God

  669. through our

  670. Lord Jesus Christ

  671. through whom

  672. we have now

  673. received

  674. reconciliation.

  675. reconciliation.

  676. In the text

  677. in Romans 3.21-5.11

  678. we see a

  679. marvelous truth

  680. that we have

  681. called the

  682. great exchange

  683. or double

  684. imputation.

  685. The word

  686. imputed means

  687. to credit.

  688. So in the

  689. gospel

  690. our sins

  691. our record

  692. all those

  693. thoughts and

  694. deeds

  695. were credited

  696. to Christ

  697. and he dies

  698. for them.

  699. He became

  700. sin and

  701. bore

  702. its curse

  703. and his

  704. righteousness

  705. is now

  706. credited

  707. to us

  708. and we

  709. become

  710. righteous.

  711. There's an

  712. exchange.

  713. We receive

  714. his righteousness

  715. he receives

  716. our sin

  717. and it is

  718. no more.

  719. Our righteousness

  720. that gives us

  721. good standing

  722. before God

  723. is not of

  724. ourselves

  725. and within

  726. ourselves

  727. but it is

  728. from outside

  729. of us.

  730. It is what

  731. we call

  732. alien righteousness.

  733. It is from

  734. outside of us

  735. from Jesus

  736. Christ.

  737. Our penalties

  738. are gone

  739. and we

  740. stand clothed

  741. in works

  742. that are

  743. not our

  744. own.

  745. Truly

  746. we are

  747. saved by

  748. grace alone

  749. in Christ.

  750. Secondly

  751. we are

  752. justified

  753. through faith

  754. in Christ.

  755. Jesus

  756. atoning

  757. death

  758. for us

  759. does not

  760. apply to

  761. everyone

  762. in the

  763. world

  764. but to

  765. those

  766. who

  767. believe.

  768. Look at

  769. Romans 3

  770. with me.

  771. Verse 22

  772. says

  773. the righteousness

  774. of God

  775. through faith

  776. in Jesus

  777. Christ

  778. for those

  779. who believe.

  780. Verse 26

  781. says

  782. that he

  783. might be

  784. the just

  785. and justifier

  786. of the

  787. one who

  788. has faith

  789. in Jesus.

  790. And verse 25

  791. says

  792. whom God

  793. put forward

  794. their propitiation

  795. by his blood

  796. to be received

  797. by faith.

  798. Timothy

  799. George

  800. says that

  801. faith is

  802. the means

  803. by which

  804. one

  805. lays hold

  806. of Christ

  807. who is

  808. our

  809. righteousness.

  810. And John

  811. Calvin

  812. in trying to

  813. articulate

  814. faith

  815. says that

  816. faith

  817. does not

  818. save

  819. it's not

  820. a work

  821. or sorry

  822. faith is not

  823. a work

  824. but it

  825. is the

  826. instrument

  827. or vessel

  828. that joins

  829. us to

  830. Christ.

  831. Christ

  832. and his

  833. righteousness

  834. save.

  835. Faith

  836. is the

  837. means.

  838. The

  839. 1689

  840. London

  841. Baptist

  842. Confession

  843. says

  844. saving

  845. faith

  846. is the

  847. means

  848. by which

  849. we

  850. accept

  851. receive

  852. and rest

  853. upon

  854. Christ

  855. for

  856. justification

  857. sanctification

  858. and eternal

  859. life

  860. by virtue

  861. of the

  862. covenant

  863. of grace.

  864. And Paul

  865. further explains

  866. faith in

  867. Romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  868. chapter 4.

  869. If you

  870. look at

  871. verses 4

  872. through 5

  873. with me.

  874. Now

  875. to the

  876. one who

  877. works

  878. his wages

  879. are not

  880. counted as

  881. a gift

  882. but as

  883. his due.

  884. And to

  885. the one

  886. who does

  887. not work

  888. but believes

  889. in him

  890. who justifies

  891. the ungodly

  892. his faith

  893. is counted

  894. as

  895. righteousness.

  896. There's a

  897. comparison.

  898. The one

  899. who works

  900. the one

  901. who tries

  902. to earn

  903. his works

  904. will only

  905. give what

  906. he is due.

  907. And the

  908. one who

  909. believes

  910. receives

  911. what isn't

  912. his.

  913. Paul does

  914. not see

  915. faith as

  916. a work

  917. that

  918. justifies.

  919. He sees

  920. it as

  921. a means,

  922. as an

  923. instrument

  924. in which

  925. we have

  926. access to

  927. Christ.

  928. Jesus'

  929. work on

  930. the cross

  931. is to

  932. be received

  933. by faith.

  934. And we

  935. see the

  936. splendor of

  937. Christ

  938. on the

  939. cross

  940. and what

  941. he has

  942. done for

  943. us and

  944. we believe

  945. this.

  946. We accept

  947. the truths

  948. of the

  949. gospel,

  950. we receive

  951. them as

  952. our own,

  953. and we

  954. find rest

  955. in them.

  956. Paul

  957. further

  958. describes

  959. faith as

  960. something that

  961. grows in

  962. us.

  963. In verse

  964. 20 he

  965. says,

  966. no unbelief

  967. made him

  968. waver concerning

  969. the promise

  970. of God,

  971. but he grew

  972. strong in

  973. his faith as

  974. he gave

  975. glory to

  976. God.

  977. Faith doesn't

  978. just begin our

  979. walks,

  980. brothers and

  981. sisters,

  982. faith is

  983. our walk.

  984. We are

  985. currently living

  986. by faith,

  987. not by

  988. sight.

  989. And as we

  990. look forward

  991. to the

  992. outcome of

  993. our salvation,

  994. we continue

  995. to grow.

  996. We grow in

  997. believing,

  998. we grow in

  999. relying,

  1000. we grow in

  1001. accepting.

  1002. We grow to

  1003. accept the

  1004. truths of

  1005. scripture,

  1006. and as they

  1007. magnify the

  1008. gospel,

  1009. and they

  1010. change us,

  1011. they change

  1012. the way we

  1013. think.

  1014. As we

  1015. believe the

  1016. gospel,

  1017. it changes

  1018. our thoughts.

  1019. And we

  1020. receive these

  1021. as these

  1022. truths of the

  1023. gospel,

  1024. bread and

  1025. food to

  1026. enjoy,

  1027. and we

  1028. find rest

  1029. in them.

  1030. The gospel

  1031. is a gospel

  1032. of rest.

  1033. It's not us

  1034. who work,

  1035. but Christ

  1036. who worked.

  1037. So now we

  1038. can rest,

  1039. and in

  1040. resting,

  1041. we love to

  1042. serve,

  1043. and we love

  1044. to obey.

  1045. Praise the

  1046. Lord for

  1047. such a

  1048. marvelous

  1049. gospel that

  1050. we have.

  1051. Norman Clayton

  1052. wrote a hymn

  1053. called My

  1054. Hope is in

  1055. the Lord.

  1056. It says,

  1057. My hope is

  1058. in the Lord

  1059. who gave

  1060. himself for

  1061. me and

  1062. paid the

  1063. prices of

  1064. all my

  1065. sin at

  1066. Calvary.

  1067. No merit

  1068. of my own

  1069. his anger

  1070. to suppress.

  1071. My only

  1072. hope is

  1073. found in

  1074. Jesus'

  1075. righteousness.

  1076. And now

  1077. for me he

  1078. stands before

  1079. the Father's

  1080. throne.

  1081. He shows

  1082. his wounded

  1083. hands and

  1084. names me

  1085. as his

  1086. own.

  1087. His grace

  1088. is planned

  1089. at all.

  1090. Tis mine

  1091. but to

  1092. believe and

  1093. recognize his

  1094. works of

  1095. love and

  1096. Christ receive.

  1097. For me he

  1098. died,

  1099. for me he

  1100. lives,

  1101. in everlasting

  1102. life and

  1103. light he

  1104. freely gives.

  1105. We are

  1106. justified by

  1107. grace alone,

  1108. through faith

  1109. alone,

  1110. in Christ

  1111. alone.

  1112. Point number

  1113. four, the

  1114. basis of our

  1115. justification,

  1116. federal headship.

  1117. faith.

  1118. In Romans

  1119. 5, 12

  1120. through 6,

  1121. 21, we

  1122. see the

  1123. basis of

  1124. the doctrine

  1125. of justification

  1126. is by

  1127. faith.

  1128. And this

  1129. basis is

  1130. found in the

  1131. wonderful doctrines

  1132. of federal

  1133. theology and

  1134. union with

  1135. Christ.

  1136. Federal

  1137. theology is

  1138. concerned with

  1139. understanding the

  1140. biblical covenants.

  1141. And there is

  1142. much discussion

  1143. and disagreement

  1144. over this

  1145. subject.

  1146. My hope this

  1147. morning is to

  1148. present to you

  1149. the prominent

  1150. Protestant

  1151. position for

  1152. the last

  1153. 400 years.

  1154. In this

  1155. position, there

  1156. are nuances,

  1157. but for the

  1158. most part,

  1159. Calvin, Luther,

  1160. the Puritans,

  1161. the particular

  1162. Baptists, the

  1163. Presbyterian, and

  1164. the founders of

  1165. Southern Baptist

  1166. Convention all

  1167. held to this

  1168. view.

  1169. And it

  1170. matters, it

  1171. matters a lot

  1172. on how we

  1173. cast our faith

  1174. upon God and

  1175. how we receive

  1176. his grace, how

  1177. we are

  1178. beneficiaries in

  1179. Christ.

  1180. It has been

  1181. the efforts of

  1182. pastors throughout

  1183. the history of

  1184. the church to

  1185. diligently labor

  1186. to understand

  1187. the scriptures

  1188. and provide a

  1189. biblically faithful

  1190. and helpful way

  1191. for us to

  1192. understand the

  1193. way that God

  1194. relates to

  1195. humanity.

  1196. The way in

  1197. which God has

  1198. a relationship

  1199. with humanity

  1200. is through

  1201. covenant.

  1202. All relationships,

  1203. all people have

  1204. with God is by

  1205. covenant.

  1206. A covenant is

  1207. God's voluntary

  1208. condescension to

  1209. relate to man.

  1210. So God in his

  1211. majesty and his

  1212. unsearchable

  1213. greatness stoops

  1214. to lowly man

  1215. and he makes

  1216. covenant.

  1217. He develops a

  1218. relationship with

  1219. us.

  1220. In God's

  1221. covenantal

  1222. relationship he

  1223. always establishes

  1224. covenants through

  1225. federal heads,

  1226. through these

  1227. people who

  1228. represent a

  1229. group of people.

  1230. This is a

  1231. public person who

  1232. represents the

  1233. members of that

  1234. covenant or

  1235. kingdom.

  1236. This makes

  1237. complete sense

  1238. for us.

  1239. We live in a

  1240. country that

  1241. has a president

  1242. and when another

  1243. king or president

  1244. or another

  1245. representative from

  1246. another country

  1247. comes, they

  1248. don't come and

  1249. hang out with

  1250. us and have

  1251. coffee with us.

  1252. They go, they

  1253. meet with our

  1254. representative, our

  1255. leader, and they

  1256. develop relationships

  1257. with him.

  1258. When the king of

  1259. the universe makes

  1260. covenant with man,

  1261. it is developed

  1262. through a federal

  1263. person, through a

  1264. representative on

  1265. our behalf.

1266. And this is what we

  1267. see in Romans 5.

  1268. We see two

  1269. representatives.

  1270. In Romans 5, we

  1271. see the

  1272. representative of

  1273. Christ and of

  1274. Adam.

  1275. So when we think

  1276. about covenant

  1277. relationships, they

  1278. are defined based

  1279. on benefits and

  1280. conditions that

  1281. arrange the

  1282. relationship.

  1283. In scripture, there

  1284. are various

  1285. covenants, but there

  1286. are three overarching

1287. ones that we see in

  1288. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1289. There is the

  1290. covenant of works

  1291. that is with Adam

  1292. in the garden.

  1293. There is the

  1294. covenant of

  1295. redemption that

  1296. was made with

  1297. Christ when he

  1298. accomplished the

  1299. work for us.

  1300. And there is the

  1301. covenant of grace,

  1302. which we call the

  1303. new covenant.

  1304. The covenant in

  1305. which we receive

  1306. all of God's

  1307. grace freely, apart

  1308. from any work.

  1309. So we see this

  1310. concept of works and

1311. of grace laid out in

  1312. scripture.

  1313. Adam had works set

  1314. before him, a

  1315. command that he

  1316. was supposed to

  1317. do, and if he

  1318. failed, he received

  1319. curse.

1320. If he did it, he

  1321. would receive a

  1322. reward.

  1323. So a covenant of

  1324. works is a

  1325. commitment based on

  1326. obedience.

  1327. It's a do this

  1328. and live.

  1329. Earn the reward.

  1330. You get what you

  1331. put into it.

  1332. A covenant of

  1333. grace is a promise

  1334. that is based

  1335. freely on the

  1336. giver, that we

  1337. receive freely.

1338. So if you look at

  1339. Romans 11, 6, it

1340. says, but if it is

1341. by grace, it is no

  1342. longer based on

  1343. works.

  1344. Otherwise, grace

  1345. would no longer be

  1346. grace.

  1347. Galatians 3, 18

  1348. says, if the

  1349. inheritance comes

  1350. by the law, it

  1351. no longer comes

  1352. by promise.

  1353. So in Romans

    Romans 5:12–21

  1354. chapter 5, verses

  1355. 12 through 21, we

  1356. see the covenant

  1357. works, the covenant

  1358. redemption, the

  1359. covenant grace.

  1360. We see two public

  1361. persons that stand

  1362. for their covenants.

  1363. We see Adam, who

  1364. sinned, and his

  1365. consequence for sin

  1366. affected all who

  1367. represented, all

  1368. creation.

  1369. And we see Christ,

  1370. whose righteousness,

  1371. his perfect obedience

  1372. was rendered, who all

  1373. who believe receive

  1374. grace through him.

  1375. They represent a

  1376. people.

  1377. people.

  1378. So let's look at

  1379. Adam first.

  1380. Number one, the

  1381. covenant works, or

  1382. what we call being

  1383. in Adam.

1384. So Adam was in the

  1385. garden, and God

  1386. developed a covenant

  1387. with him.

  1388. After God created

  1389. everything, he

  1390. developed a

  1391. relationship with

  1392. Adam.

  1393. He was king over

  1394. all the universe, and

  1395. Adam was his

  1396. faithful servant

  1397. king.

  1398. Adam had dominion, he

  1399. ruled, he had a

  1400. responsibility in the

  1401. garden.

  1402. Adam was the federal

  1403. head of all creation.

  1404. Adam represented all

  1405. creation.

  1406. So in establishing this

  1407. relationship with Adam,

1408. God gave him dominion, he

1409. gave him the luxuries of

1410. the garden, and he gave

  1411. him the opportunity for

  1412. eternal life.

1413. If Adam does not eat the

1414. fruit of eternal life, he

  1415. can enjoy God's

  1416. blessings.

  1417. He would reflect his

  1418. divine image, he would

  1419. be a prophet, a priest, and

1420. a king in the garden.

  1421. He would execute godly

  1422. dominion, and he would

  1423. enjoy everlasting life.

1424. And what was supposed to

  1425. happen, his image bearers,

1426. his sons and children, were

  1427. fruitful, they multiplied,

1428. and they spread his glory in

  1429. all creation.

1430. In the beginning was a

  1431. picture of rest and

  1432. enjoyment of God.

1433. That was the picture of

1434. what Adam had before him.

  1435. But tragically, Adam chose

1436. to rebel against his king.

  1437. Adam decided to commit

1438. treason, and he ate the

1439. fruit of the knowledge of

  1440. good and evil.

  1441. And the consequences of

  1442. this decision affected all

  1443. the people he represented,

1444. all that was under his

  1445. dominion.

1446. Look at verse 12 of

  1447. chapter 5 with me.

1448. Sin came into the world

  1449. through one man, and

  1450. death through sin.

1451. So death spread to all

  1452. man, because all sinned.

  1453. Adam's disobedience brought

1454. sin and death into the

  1455. world, providing devastating

  1456. consequences both

1457. temporally, here and now we

1458. feel the effects, but also

  1459. eternally.

1460. We are now born into a

  1461. condition.

  1462. Romans 5, 18 says,

  1463. one trespass led to

  1464. condemnation for all men.

  1465. Because of Adam's headship

1466. over all creation and all

  1467. under his dominion,

  1468. suffers the consequences.

1469. And we see that sin has

  1470. affected the totality of

  1471. creation and man.

1472. We saw it in Romans 3, we

1473. saw it in our congregational

  1474. recitation where

  1475. redemption is longing for,

1476. or creation is longing for

  1477. redemption.

1478. There is a totality of

1479. effect due to Adam and his

  1480. decisions.

  1481. after Adam's disobedience,

  1482. God justly gave consequences

1483. to all the parties involved.

1484. In the midst of despair, in

1485. the midst of shame, of

1486. failing to commit and do the

  1487. covenant works, God revealed

1488. his goodness and his grace and

1489. gave a promise that was solely

  1490. based on grace.

1491. And this is the beginning of

1492. promises we see in scripture

1493. that are fulfilled in the new

  1494. covenant.

  1495. covenant.

1496. In Ephesians 2, Paul calls

1497. these the covenants of the

1498. promise or the new covenant.

1499. So the covenant of grace, this

1500. idea where we receive all the

1501. benefits apart from anything we

1502. do, is fulfilled in Christ.

1503. He comes, he does a work and

  1504. fulfills all responsibilities of

1505. the law and takes our curse for

  1506. us.

1507. And in it, we receive benefits

  1508. from him.

1509. So think about the ways that he's

  1510. fulfilled different promises.

1511. He is the serpent crusher,

1512. blessing to the nations, the

1513. lion of Judah, the lamb of God,

  1514. the deliverer, the prophet

1515. greater than Moses, the priest

1516. of a better order, the suffering

1517. servant, the Davidic king, the

1518. son of Abraham, the son of

  1519. David, and the Christ.

1520. Jesus is the fulfillment of all

1521. the New Testament promise or all

1522. the Old Testament promises and

1523. brings us the new covenant,

1524. brings us a gift of grace in

  1525. himself.

  1526. So how?

1527. How can Jesus bring us a gift of

  1528. grace?

1529. How can we be part of a covenant

1530. that is freely given to us, even

1531. though we're in Adam, even though

  1532. we have sin?

1533. And this is what Roman 5 tells us.

1534. It helps us understand that Adam

1535. disobeyed and broke the covenant

1536. works, and there is a better

  1537. representative.

1538. There is a better head.

1539. This is the God-man, Jesus Christ,

1540. who perfectly obeyed God and kept

  1541. his covenant.

1542. And this is where we receive the

  1543. covenant of redemption.

1544. It's what we see in Romans 5,

1545. that just as Adam was given a

1546. covenant of works in the garden,

1547. Jesus was given a covenant of

  1548. works in eternity past.

1549. And we call this the covenant of

  1550. redemption.

1551. Look at verses 18 through 19 with

  1552. me.

1553. Therefore, as one trespass led to

1554. condemnation for all, so one act of

  1555. righteousness leads to justification

1556. in life for all men.

1557. For as by one man's disobedience the

1558. many were made sinners, so by one

1559. man's obedience the many will be made

  1560. righteous.

1561. God requires perfect obedience from

  1562. man.

1563. But Christ came in the covenant of

  1564. redemption and rendered perfect

  1565. obedience to God.

1566. He came and brought reconciliation so

1567. that by this one man's obedience the

1568. many can be made righteous.

1569. We don't have to work to do it.

1570. That's what this is telling us in

1571. Romans 5, is that he did all the

  1572. work.

1573. Everything we deserved, the perfect

1574. law we need to render, the blameless

1575. life, Christ came, perfectly lived,

1576. and even went a step further and

1577. suffered the curse for our sins.

1578. He lived perfectly and took the

  1579. penalty.

1580. We see this in Galatians 3, 13 through

1581. 14, Christ redeemed us from the curse

1582. of the law by becoming a curse for

  1583. us.

1584. For it is written, cursed be everyone

1585. who is hanged on a tree, so that in

1586. Christ Jesus, the blessing of Abraham

1587. might come to the Gentiles, so we might

1588. receive the promised spirit through

  1589. faith.

1590. Jesus is the perfect representative who

1591. perfectly obeyed God and fulfilled the

  1592. covenant of works.

1593. In doing so, Jesus brings us grace.

1594. He brings us a gift, as Romans 5 says.

1595. This is what we call the new covenant.

1596. This is what we call the covenant of

  1597. grace.

1598. The covenant of grace, this new

1599. covenant, this gift of grace in Romans

1600. 5, is solely based on God and his grace

  1601. through Jesus Christ.

1602. God's grace is freely lavished on his

1603. people without distinction and without

1604. works because of Jesus' perfect work in

  1605. redemption.

1606. Jesus' work in the covenant of redemption is

1607. the foundation for the new covenant, for us to

1608. receive grace. Because he did it, we benefit.

  1609. Romans 5, 15-17 says just this,

1610. But the free gift is not like the

1611. trespass, for if many died through one

1612. man's trespass, much more have the grace

1613. of God and the free gift by the grace of

1614. that one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for

1615. many. And the free gift is not like the

1616. results of the one man's sin, for judgment

1617. following one trespass brought condemnation, but

1618. the free gift following many trespasses

1619. brought justification. For if because of

1620. one man's trespass, death reigned through

1621. one man, much more will those who receive

1622. the abundance of grace and the free gift

1623. of righteousness reign in life through one

  1624. man, Jesus Christ.

1625. Therefore, in summary, because Jesus is our

1626. perfect representative in his covenant of

1627. works, we have access to free grace through

1628. the new covenant. We are beneficiaries. We do

1629. none of the work. He did it all. The basis of

1630. our justification is Christ's representation

1631. for us. He is the better Adam who perfectly

1632. represents his people as the federal head, and

1633. he offers them salvation. Just as Adam could

1634. not bring eternal life, Jesus Christ brings

1635. eternal life, and we benefit. We are partakers

1636. of that. And this is exactly why Christians in

1637. Scripture are called being in Christ. If you do

1638. a search on the word Christian in your Bible, you

1639. see three uses of it as a label. But if you do

1640. a search on the word in Christ, you see over

1641. a hundred. The primary way the scriptures talk

1642. about us as Christians is that we are in Christ, that

1643. we're beneficiaries of Christ in his work, in all

1644. of his grace. Dave Jenkins says, being a Christian is

1645. not merely being outwardly identified with Christ,

1646. but belonging to part of Christ. Not merely being

1647. united with him, but being united in him. In the

1648. New Testament, Christians are those who are in

1649. Christ by virtue of the new covenant. This is

1650. exactly what we saw in the 1689 definition of

1651. faith, that we are those who saving faith is

1652. accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ

1653. alone for justification, sanctification, eternal

1654. life by virtue of the covenant of grace, or by

1655. virtue of the new covenant. Being in Christ, we

1656. experience him in all his benefits, all of his

1657. blessings. And this is exactly why Ephesians 1-3

1658. says that in him we receive every spiritual blessing

1659. in Christ, so that Christ would be our all in all. That's

1660. the summary. I know this is a lot of concepts and

1661. words and theology, but in the summary, this girds our

1662. justification in Christ is all in all. Matt Boswell and

1663. Stuart Townend in their song, O Church of Christ

1664. Invincible says, O Church of Christ Invincible, people of

1665. the Lord, empowered by the Spirit's breath and nourished

1666. by his word. His covenant of grace will be our portion

1667. evermore, for he who calls us will not change our help and

1668. our reward. Lastly, and shortly, point number five, the

1669. basis of our justification is our union with Christ. In

1670. Romans 6, Paul goes on to explain how we partake of this

1671. grace, of this covenant, by becoming in Christ. This is the

1672. wonderful doctrine that we call the union with Christ. And

1673. for us to develop a better understanding of our union of

1674. Christ, we would have to survey all the New Testament. We

1675. would have to look what in Christ means and look at every

1676. place it's used, because all that is defining, all that is

1677. helping us understand. But for two quotes, that's all I'll do

1678. on this phrase. Hopefully they're helpful to you. Joel

1679. Beeky says, the believer's union with Christ enables him or

1680. her to receive all the benefits of Christ's work, including

1681. justification, adoption, and sanctification. To have Christ is

1682. to have all. And John Owen says, this union is the principle

1683. and measure of all spiritual enjoyments and expectations. This

1684. is what girds us to Christ. This is how we are part of his vine,

1685. his body. He is our head and we are his body. And it's through

1686. our union, through the Holy Spirit that connects us, that we

1687. receive and enjoy all his benefits. So in Romans 6, it explains

1688. how we are united to Christ and experience all of his benefits.

1689. Union with Christ is now the subject of chapter 6, chapter 7, and

1690. chapter 8. So as we think about this overarching puzzle and the

1691. border, the border is that Christ completed a work for us and offers us

1692. grace freely. And now we are united to him and benefit from all that. So

1693. that's how we're secure, liberated. That's how we enjoy all these benefits,

1694. is that Christ did the work and we're now a part of him. We're now connected to

1695. him. So how does one go from being in Adam and being in Christ? How do we go

1696. from experiencing all the curses effects to experiencing all of the benefits, all

1697. the blessings, and all of the grace? We see in verses 6, or 6, 1 through 4, that

1698. the Spirit unites us to Christ. According to verse 4, just as our sins were

1699. buried with him in his death, we are raised with him to new life. There's a phrase in

1700. verse 4 that says, newness of life. This could also be rendered new creation

1701. life. We were spiritually dead in Adam. We were under the curse and we felt all of

1702. its weights. And God, through his Spirit, gives us new life and connects us to

1703. Christ. We were a part of a dying tree, a withering tree, and life was not as it

1704. should be. But by the work of the Spirit, we've been connected to the living

1705. vine, and we receive the resurrection sap. We enjoy the benefits. And as this

1706. subject's broached upon in the book, the rest of the next three chapters are

1707. leaning on it. So we see in chapter 6 that we are freed from the dominion of sin

1708. and that we are alive to God. When we go into chapter 7, we're going to be, we're

1709. going to see that we're freed from the law. And then when we go into chapter 8, we're

1710. going to see that we have no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. So as we

1711. keep going, you're going to see all these benefits that we benefit from or that we

1712. are blessed with. So number one, we are freed from the dominion of sin. Prior to

1713. being united to Christ, sin had dominion over us. We were slaves to it and we

1714. lived our lives for it. But being united to Christ, we've been freed from the

1715. dominion of sin and are now slaves of righteousness. So in chapter 6, you see that

1716. in verse 14, for sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law

1717. but under grace. And then verse 22, but now that you've been set free from sin and

1718. have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end,

1719. eternal life. Those who are connected to Christ produce fruit and sanctification and

1720. they receive their end, eternal life. Secondly, we are alive to God because we are

1721. in Christ. We now have life through his resurrection. We have been united to Christ and

1722. we are no longer dead in sin, but to sin. We're no longer dead in sin, but to sin. It's

1723. no longer a part of us as a consequence. And now we are alive to God. Look at verse 11

1724. in chapter 6. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ. And then

1725. it ends. Now we live in Christ through the Spirit. The new life produces fruit that leads to

1726. sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is

1727. eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Through the Spirit we have life in Christ now and we will

1728. receive its end, eternal life. So in review, Romans 1 16 through 17, we see the glory of the gospel

1729. without distinction, without works. Romans 1 18 through 320, we see God's righteousness against sin.

1730. All have sinned and all are held accountable for sin. In Romans 3 21 through 5 11, we see that

1731. justification is by grace through faith in Christ. The atoning work of Christ provides us salvation

1732. by grace alone, not any works, and we have access to this grace through faith in Christ.

1733. In Romans 5 12 through 21, we see the basis for our justification is federal headship. When Adam

1734. failed in representing humanity, Jesus perfectly represented his chosen people. Adam broke the

1735. covenant with God and brought sin into the world. Jesus perfectly kept the covenant of God and offers

1736. eternal life. And in Romans 6 1 through 21, we see the other basis for justification, our union with

1737. Christ. In union with Christ, we are freed from the dominion of sin and given new life in Christ.

1738. Through our union with Christ, we receive every spiritual benefit, and it provides foundation to our

1739. communion and our enjoyment with God. So now that we've summarized the first six chapters, next week,

1740. we will start in Romans 1 or Romans 7 1 through 6, and then we'll finish the book of Romans 7 the week

1741. after. So in closing, Hudson Taylor, Hudson Taylor and his life discovered the beauty and the wonders of

1742. the doctrine of the union in Christ. And John Piper, in an article called How Familiar Truth Forever

1743. Change, Hudson Taylor, says these words about this experience. And I pray this is the experience

1744. that you also have as you ponder the scriptures and as you learn to love and rejoice in these truths.

1745. During a despairing season of Hudson Taylor's ministry, Hudson Taylor found a letter waiting for him in

1746. Xinjiang from John McCarthy. And what Hudson Taylor read in this letter revived his soul and revolutionized

1747. his life. Taylor says, when my agony of soul was at its height, a sentence in a letter from Dear McCarthy

1748. was used to remove the scales from my eyes. And the Spirit of God revealed to me the truth of the oneness

1749. with Jesus as I had never known it before. As I read, I saw it all. I looked to Jesus and saw,

1750. and oh, when I saw how the joy flowed, that he had said, I will never leave thee. I saw not only that

1751. Jesus will never leave me, but I am a member of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. The vine is

1752. not the root merely, but all. Roots, stem, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruit. And Jesus is not that

1753. alone. He is the soil and the sunshine. He is the air in the showers, and 10,000 times more than we've

1754. ever dreamed, wished for, or needed. Oh, the joy of seeing this truth of our union with Christ. So I pray

1755. that as we close our time, our hearts will be drawn to this oneness of Jesus, to this union that we

1756. have, we benefit from, and that we will also see the soil and the sunshine, the air and the showers,

1757. and 10,000 times more than we ever dreamed, wished for, or needed. Pray with me.
