  1. Read verses 1-6 with me.

  2. And if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress.

  3. Will you pray with me for the preaching of God's word?

  4. Father, your word is powerful.

  5. It is living and is active and it pierces between the joints of marrow to the intentions of the heart.

  6. And we ask this morning that your word would work in us to humble us.

  7. To remind us freshly of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  8. And to find great joy in him and in communion with Jesus Christ.

  9. Lord, we ask that the word would cause us to rejoice.

  10. That it would make the simple wise and it would make the unclean clean.

  11. And that it would be richer than gold and sweeter than honey this morning.

  12. In Jesus' name, amen.

  13. So to introduce today's sermon, I would love to share a little bit about the life of Martin Luther.

  14. Martin Luther was educated under medieval theology.

  15. In this education, Luther was taught that justification is to make oneself righteous.

  16. Righteousness, in this thought, began with baptism and was continued through taking the Catholic sacraments.

  17. In addition to being made righteous through the sacraments, they would teach that one could have a claim on God,

  18. even demand certain things from God, if they just did their very best.

  19. Their natural abilities and their good works would merit or would provide merit that would then justify them.

  20. If we just did what was in us, if we just did our very best, we can be disposed to God's grace.

  21. That was the doctrine that Luther came out of and that was in his mind as he became a monk.

  22. And it was the doctrine that eventually drove him to despair.

  23. Between 1516 and 1517, Luther abandoned these teachings.

  24. He called them the rancid rules of the philosophers.

  25. He realized that we don't have a disposition towards God, but actually indisposition.

  26. We're actually naturally rebellious towards God.

  27. Luther came to an awareness that the sinner is utterly helpless to save himself

  28. or to have any right standing before God based on their own merits.

  29. As he came to this reality that he was sinful and God was holy and just, he was undone.

  30. All his attempts to satisfy God, his prayers, his fasting, his vigils, his good works,

  31. all the things he did left him wholly disquieted.

  32. His mood swung from despair to anger at God over this reality.

  33. And it began to produce an experience that he called infectum.

  34. It's a German word and it doesn't translate well into our language, but it carries lots of meaning.

  35. For Luther, this was dread.

  36. He would see God's righteousness and feel dread and despair.

  37. This sense of foreboding doom.

  38. This assault on his soul and anxiety.

  39. And it left him lowly.

  40. Luther felt as if his whole sinful life was exposed before God's presence.

  41. As Luther went to the word in the season, he saw the righteousness of God through the law.

  42. Later in his writings, Luther would say,

  43. God gave the law then to put us to death, to kill us, so that we would see the enormity of our sin.

  44. Luther would talk about God's law as a hammer.

  45. He says,

  46. This presumption of righteousness in us is a huge and horrible monster.

  47. To break and crush it, God needs a large and powerful hammer.

  48. That is the law, which is the hammer of death, the thunder of hell, and the lightning of divine wrath.

  49. To what purpose?

  50. To attack the presumption of righteousness, which is rebellious, stubborn, and stiff-necked beast in us.

  51. The law was the hammer of God that would expose Luther's seething rebellion against God,

  52. and it would ultimately show his deep need for Jesus Christ for salvation.

  53. Between 1518 and 1519, Luther, in studying the book of Romans,

  54. discovered that justification is not to be made righteous.

  55. It's not a progressive work that we justify ourselves before God.

  56. Justification is to be declared righteous based on the works of another.

  57. Justification is not doing one's very best, as if we are good and can show approval to God.

  58. But justification is based on Christ and his righteousness.

  59. Luther says justification is by faith alone,

  60. because it looks to Christ alone for forgiveness of sins and salvation.

  61. Faith itself doesn't save, but faith saves because we receive Christ by faith,

  62. because we possess and grasp Christ by faith.

  63. In Luther's theology, before salvation, the law exposes our need for Christ.

  64. It reveals our complete inability to be righteous,

  65. that our good works don't give anything to God.

  66. There is no hope and freedom found in our own works,

  67. but only through Jesus Christ and his works.

  68. What Luther discovered is that true and lasting freedom comes through Christ.

  69. He has done all the work.

  70. Because of Christ's work and his fulfillment of the covenant of redemption,

  71. we are freed from the law.

  72. We are freed from its rigor and its curse.

  73. The Holy Spirit has given us new hearts and unites us to Christ.

  74. In Christ, we are free, and the law now serves as a rule of life.

  75. It's a means by which we express love to God and to please him.

  76. So today, the main point I want you to see in this sermon

  77. is that in Christ, we are freed from the law

  78. so that we can serve God, serve Christ by the Spirit.

  79. So in Christ, we are freed from the law

  80. so that we can serve Christ by the Spirit.

  81. So point number one, the law had rule over us.

  82. Point one, the law had rule over us.

  83. If you look at verse one with me,

  84. and do you not know, brothers, for I am speaking to those who know the law,

  85. that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives.

  86. Paul begins Romans 7 with another rhetorical question,

  87. which as we have been following Nathan's preaching,

  88. we see that this is how he forms his arguments.

  89. He proposes a good concept,

  90. and then he then starts to explain it

  91. and asks a question about it, and then answers the question.

  92. So here we have another question,

  93. and this question is meant to explain the relationship

  94. between the believer and the law.

  95. What relationship does the law play in the believer's life?

  96. So questions I hope to answer today is,

  97. what was the relationship between those in Adam and the law?

  98. So as we're thinking about Romans 5,

  99. what is the relationship that those in Adam, unbelievers, have with the law?

  100. Second question I hope to answer is,

  101. what relationship are those in Christ have with the law?

  102. What relationship does believers have in regards to God's law?

  103. Is it no law, or is there still something

  104. that bounds us that is good,

  105. that we love, that frames the way in which we live?

  106. So if you look at verse 1,

  107. there is a gentle but firm rebuke to the church.

  108. He asserts that they know the law.

  109. The audience of the Jews and the Gentiles

  110. would know the law in which he speaks about.

  111. And as we've made our way through Romans,

  112. we see that Paul is building a case.

  113. And if we look at the way in which Paul has talked about the law

  114. in the first six chapters,

  115. and the way he talks about the law in chapter 7,

  116. I think that we can understand which law he is referring to.

  117. And from this letter,

  118. I propose that this law that he's talking to

  119. is what we call the moral law,

  120. or the Ten Commandments.

  121. So throughout this law,

  122. Paul's case he's building is that

  123. all are unrighteous and deserving of God's wrath.

  124. So as we talked about last week in Romans 1,

  125. that people see God's glory in creation,

  126. they see his righteousness,

  127. but they suppress the truth,

  128. and they exchange his glory for creation.

  129. In Romans 2, we discuss that all people

  130. have the law of God in their hearts,

  131. and their conscience bear witness against them.

  132. The law of God in Romans 2

  133. is the law that forbids stealing,

  134. idolatry, idolatry,

  135. and the misuse of the Lord's name.

  136. And it's referred to as the law of the letter

  137. that was written on stone.

  138. In Romans 7, verse 6 tells us

    Romans 7:6

  139. that the law came in the old way of written code.

  140. And then verse 7 goes on to say,

  141. we would not have known what it is to covet

  142. if the law had not said,

  143. you shall not covet.

  144. So at this point,

  145. Paul's talking about this law in Romans 7

  146. that forbids stealing,

  147. adultery, idolatry, blasphemy,

  148. and covetousness.

  149. The law was written on stone

  150. and is referred to as the law of the letter.

  151. I believe that from all these things,

  152. Paul has in mind the Ten Commandments,

  153. which God wrote on stone.

  154. This moral law has been revealed

  155. in the hearts of all men in creation

  156. and was put in writing on Mount Sinai.

  157. This is the law of creation

  158. that is made explicit in the Mosaic law.

  159. So with that said,

  160. John Calvin has proposed

  161. three uses of the moral law

  162. that I think we will find very instructive today.

  163. He says,

  164. use number one is the civil use.

  165. This is the use of the law

  166. that restrains evil

  167. and promotes righteousness.

  168. It restrains the wicked inclinations

  169. of the heart from manifesting itself.

  170. And we see this law being applied

  171. in how we tell people right or wrong,

  172. but we ultimately see it

  173. in how we create and preserve a society.

  174. There is always some sense of civil use

  175. throughout society

  176. that upholds and sustains a society.

  177. Number two is the pedagogical

  178. or the evangelical use of the law.

  179. This law functions like a mirror.

  180. It's supposed to expose to us

  181. our sin or reveal our unrighteousness.

  182. It shows our complete inability

  183. to be righteous

  184. so that we would see our need for a savior,

  185. see our need for someone who was righteous.

  186. And the third use

  187. is what Calvin called the normative use.

  188. This use of the law

  189. reveals God's will

  190. and frames the law

  191. as a rule of life.

  192. It's the way that believers

  193. express their love to God

  194. and delight in him.

  195. So the three uses of the law

  196. are the civil use,

  197. the evangelical use,

  198. and the normative use.

  199. So in verse one,

  200. Paul is applying the evangelical use.

  201. We see that the law is binding.

  202. It has an authority,

  203. authority.

  204. But this isn't just authority.

  205. This word is used in this context

  206. to mean a rule,

  207. a mastery.

  208. BDAG,

  209. which is the Greek lexicon,

  210. supports that this is a rule over,

  211. that it has authority

  212. that's not just,

  213. it tells us what is right and wrong,

  214. but it is binding,

  215. it's domineering over us.

  216. And Paul here describes us

  217. being married to the law.

  218. All men are obligated

  219. to the law's demands,

  220. and if they break

  221. the demands of the law,

  222. it's penalties.

  223. The ten commandments

  224. bind all in Adam.

  225. In this marriage,

  226. we are under a taskmaster.

  227. The law reveals

  228. the ways in which

  229. we cannot keep the commandments.

  230. And in doing so,

  231. according to verse five,

  232. the law arouses sin in us.

  233. It exposes sin in our hearts.

  234. The law shows us

  235. our utter inability to keep it.

  236. So James 2.10 says,

  237. whoever keeps the whole law

  238. but fails one point

  239. is guilty of it all.

  240. To be bound under the law

  241. is to be bound

  242. under the rigor

  243. of its obedience

  244. that it requires from us.

  245. The law lays this heavy yoke upon us

  246. and gives us the least help

  247. or necessary strength

  248. to fulfill it.

  249. It doesn't offer life or salvation,

  250. but offers a requirement.

  251. The law has an impossible demand

  252. of exact obedience.

  253. As James 2 says,

  254. if we fail in one point,

  255. we've broken it all.

  256. Samuel Bolton says,

  257. the law looks for exact obedience

  258. in every jot and tittle.

  259. The demands of the law

  260. are unbearable

  261. and they leave the subjects

  262. beat down and condemned.

  263. The law's requirements

  264. are too great for any.

  265. This is why Paul says,

  266. no one is justified

  267. before God

  268. by the law in Galatians.

  269. So we see that

  270. the demand of the law

  271. is great.

  272. The consequences

  273. for breaking the law

  274. are severe.

  275. In Galatians 2.10,

  276. all who rely on the works

  277. of the law

  278. are under a curse.

  279. For it's written,

  280. cursed be everyone

  281. who does not abide

  282. by all things written

  283. in the book of the law

  284. and do them.

  285. The severe consequences

  286. of those who rely on the law,

  287. that means those who rely

  288. on their own works,

  289. those who rely on their own will,

  290. or those who rely

  291. on their innate goodness,

  292. is death.

  293. We see this in 6.23,

  294. the verse right before verse 1.

  295. For the wages of sin

  296. is death,

  297. but the gift of God

  298. is eternal life

  299. through Christ Jesus.

  300. So in Adam,

  301. we were under

  302. this rule of law.

  303. It had authority

  304. and rule over us

  305. and sin had dominion in us.

  306. The demands of this master

  307. were great,

  308. the consequences severe.

  309. It was an impossible yoke

  310. and an eternal punishment

  311. for breaking it.

  312. This is why

  313. when we sing the hymn

  314. Rock of Ages,

  315. we say,

  316. Not the labors of my hand

  317. can fulfill

  318. thy law's demands.

  319. Could my zeal

  320. no respite know?

  321. Could my tears

  322. forever flow?

  323. All for sin

  324. could not atone.

  325. Thou must save

  326. and thou alone.

  327. This is where we see

  328. the evangelical

  329. use of the law.

  330. This is where we see

  331. the law shows

  332. our complete inability

  333. to keep it.

  334. That we need someone

  335. greater than us

  336. who can fulfill

  337. all demands.

  338. It can fulfill

  339. every jot and tittle

  340. of its requirements.

  341. But not only that,

  342. we don't only need

  343. someone to meet

  344. the demands,

  345. we need someone

  346. to also bear the penalties

  347. because we've all

  348. broken the law.

  349. So the evangelical

  350. use of the law

  351. takes the law

  352. and shows us

  353. that we need the gospel.

  354. Samuel Bolton says

  355. the law is subservient

  356. to the gospel.

  357. It's under the gospel.

  358. It serves it.

  359. Its purpose is to convince

  360. and to humble us.

  361. And the gospel

  362. is to enable us

  363. to fulfill the obedience

  364. of the law.

  365. The law sends us

  366. to the gospel

  367. for justification.

  368. It doesn't justify,

  369. but it sends us

  370. to the gospel.

  371. And the gospel

  372. sends us to the law

  373. to frame our way

  374. of life.

  375. And we see this exact thing

  376. in Pilgrim's Progress

  377. by John Bunyan.

  378. In Pilgrim's Progress,

  379. the main character

  380. named Christian

  381. is making a journey.

  382. And along his journey

  383. through the Christian life,

  384. he meets a man

  385. named Faithful.

  386. And Faithful and Christian

  387. now are journeying together.

  388. They're sharing

  389. how they came to salvation.

  390. They're sharing

  391. their experiences

  392. as being a believer.

  393. And Pilgrim asks Faithful

  394. about how he came to Christ,

  395. but then his experiences

  396. from it.

  397. Faithful retells

  398. that he comes

  399. to the hill of difficulty.

  400. And as he comes

  401. to the hill,

  402. he meets someone

  403. named Adam the First.

  404. And Adam the First

  405. tries to appeal

  406. to Faithful

  407. with all the world's pleasures.

  408. I'll give you

  409. the lust of the flesh,

  410. the lust of the eyes,

  411. and the pride of life.

  412. And you can come

  413. and enjoy my estate

  414. is what Adam the First says.

  415. But Faithful

  416. has this thought

  417. that he needs

  418. to put off the old man

  419. and turns away

  420. from Adam the First

  421. and starts climbing

  422. the mountain.

  423. And as he's climbing,

  424. Adam the First yells,

  425. I'm going to send

  426. someone after you.

  427. So Faithful

  428. tells his story

  429. from there.

  430. He says,

  431. so as soon as the man,

  432. or as he's going

  433. up the hill,

  434. in the next scene,

  435. he sees someone

  436. coming after him.

  437. And he says,

  438. so as soon as the man

  439. overtook me

  440. without saying a word,

  441. he struck me

  442. and knocked me down

  443. unconscious.

  444. When I came to,

  445. I asked him

  446. why he had thus

  447. assaulted me.

  448. And he said that

  449. it was because

  450. of my secret inclination

  451. to follow Adam the First.

  452. And with that,

  453. he struck me

  454. with another deadly blow

  455. on the chest

  456. and beat me down

  457. backwards.

  458. And I laid at his feet

  459. as if I were dead.

  460. So when I came to,

  461. I cried to him

  462. for mercy.

  463. I said,

  464. I do not,

  465. he said to me,

  466. I do not know

  467. how to show mercy.

  468. And he knocked me

  469. down again.

  470. And he would have

  471. beaten me to death

  472. except one who came

  473. and told him to stop.

  474. So Christian then

  475. asked Faithful,

  476. who came

  477. and told him to stop?

  478. And Faithful says,

  479. I did not recognize

  480. him at first,

  481. but as he went by,

  482. I saw the wounds

  483. in his hands

  484. and in his side.

  485. Then I concluded

  486. that it was our Lord.

  487. Christian then explained

  488. the incident to Faithful.

  489. The man who overtook

  490. he was Moses.

  491. He spares no one

  492. and does not know

  493. how to show mercy

  494. to anyone

  495. who transgresses

  496. his law.

  497. So here,

  498. Bunyan is picturing

  499. the law

  500. as one who came

  501. and beat him down.

  502. And the law

  503. pointed that he had

  504. no ability

  505. to fulfill it,

  506. no ability to do

  507. the demands of the law.

  508. But then came someone

  509. with wounds in his hand

  510. and wounds in his side

  511. who stopped the beating

  512. and this was his Lord.

  513. The point he's making

  514. is that the law

  515. should point us

  516. to our need for a Savior.

  517. We need the law

  518. to point us

  519. to our need for a Savior

  520. because we cannot be justified

  521. by the law.

  522. So the law

  523. had great rule over us

  524. with its demands

  525. and its severe consequences.

  526. Christ has set us free

  527. from the law's demands

  528. and consequences

  529. by his work

  530. of redemption.

  531. So point number two,

  532. Christ has set us free.

  533. Christ has set us free.

  534. The law of Romans 7

  535. is binding on all

  536. and the only way

  537. to be freed from this law

  538. is death.

  539. According to verses 2-3,

  540. the married spouse

  541. is bound to her husband

  542. by the law of marriage.

  543. This union is for life

  544. for as the text says,

  545. as long as one lives.

  546. The married woman

  547. would only be free

  548. to marry another

  549. by law

  550. if her husband died.

  551. Paul uses this picture

  552. to portray the freedom

  553. that we have

  554. through our union

  555. with Jesus Christ.

  556. Because we've been

  557. united to Christ,

  558. we have died to the law

  559. through his body,

  560. according to verse 4.

  561. Verse 6 explains

  562. that we've been released

  563. from the law,

  564. having died to that

  565. which held us captive.

  566. How can this be?

  567. How can our union

  568. with Christ

  569. provide us freedom?

  570. It is because

  571. Jesus was our federal head.

  572. He was our perfect representative.

  573. The covenant of works

  574. that God made of Adam,

  575. Adam broke.

  576. The covenant of redemption

  577. that God made of Christ,

  578. Christ kept.

  579. When we are united to Christ,

  580. we are represented

  581. in his life,

  582. his death,

  583. and his resurrection.

  584. In his death,

  585. we died with him.

  586. It says we were crucified

  587. with Christ,

  588. and in doing so,

  589. we died to the law.

  590. And in his life,

  591. we were raised with him

  592. and are justified.

  593. His life and resurrection

  594. provide us justification.

  595. That means true freedom

  596. comes from the works

  597. of Jesus Christ.

  598. In Christ,

  599. you are free indeed.

  600. John 8.36 says,

  601. So if the Son sets you free,

  602. you will be free indeed.

  603. Galatians 5.1,

  604. For freedom Christ

  605. has set you free.

  606. 2 Corinthians 3.17,

  607. Now the Lord is spirit,

  608. and where the spirit

  609. of the Lord is,

  610. there is freedom.

  611. In Christ is where we experience

  612. true and lasting freedom.

  613. There is freedom,

  614. and you are free indeed

  615. through our Savior.

  616. And this is an essential part

  617. of your gospel,

  618. of the gospel that we believe.

  619. John Calvin says,

  620. Liberty is a necessary

  621. attendant to the doctrine

  622. of justification.

  623. John Owen calls

  624. Christian freedom

  625. the second principle

  626. of the Reformation.

  627. Our gospel is a freeing gospel

  628. that has fulfilled the law

  629. and broke the bonds

  630. in sin and death

  631. that we were under.

  632. We see this in the work

  633. Jesus has done for us.

  634. The heavy demands

  635. of the law

  636. and the severe consequences

  637. that we deserve

  638. were credited to Christ,

  639. were counted on him.

  640. He fulfilled the demands,

  641. and he took the consequences

  642. for us.

  643. Jesus was placed

  644. under every rigorous demand

  645. of the law

  646. and obeyed it

  647. in every way.

  648. Jesus obeyed the law,

  649. every dot

  650. and every tittle.

  651. Jesus perfectly offered

  652. obedience to God,

  653. fulfilling the law.

  654. That's why Romans 8 says

  655. that the righteous requirement

  656. of the law

  657. might be fulfilled in us.

  658. While blameless,

  659. Jesus,

  660. in fulfilling his covenant

  661. and being the better

  662. representative for us,

  663. he also became a curse

  664. and he took

  665. all the severe consequences

  666. that you deserve.

  667. Every breaking of the law,

  668. every sin

  669. that you have committed,

  670. Jesus took for you

  671. and he died once and for all.

  672. Galatians 3.13 says,

  673. Christ redeemed us

  674. from the curse of the law

  675. by becoming a curse for us.

  676. For it is written,

  677. curse it to everyone

  678. who is hanged on a tree.

  679. Because Jesus fulfilled

  680. the covenant of redemption,

  681. we are free.

  682. We are free from the dominion

  683. of sin.

  684. The sin that you once served,

  685. that once held you captive

  686. and that you labored for,

  687. you've been set free from.

  688. We are free from Satan

  689. and the tyranny of Satan

  690. and his dominion.

  691. Colossians 1.13

  692. We are free from the demands

  693. of the law

  694. and the exact obedience

  695. that it renders,

  696. that it asked for.

  697. And we are free

  698. from the curse of the law.

  699. All your penalties

  700. were taken by Jesus.

  701. The Reformation song,

  702. which we will sing

  703. after the sermon,

  704. says,

  705. In Christ alone,

  706. we're justified.

  707. His righteousness

  708. is our plea.

  709. Your law's demands

  710. are satisfied.

  711. His perfect work

  712. has set us free.

  713. Brothers and sisters,

  714. do you see this amazing love

  715. that Christ has for us?

  716. There is no labor.

  717. There is no work.

  718. There is no decision

  719. that you can offer to God

  720. for his approval.

  721. You are not under

  722. a magnifying glass.

  723. There is no perfect

  724. and foreboding standard

  725. that makes you lie worthless,

  726. that makes you feel inadequate,

  727. because Christ has done it all.

  728. God looks at Christ's works

  729. and finds great approval for you.

  730. Therefore,

  731. you don't have to work.

  732. His work has provided you

  733. a sweet and amiable relationship

  734. with the Father.

  735. You are valued

  736. on Christ's merits

  737. and now have access

  738. to the Father,

  739. now have communion

  740. with him.

  741. Brothers and sisters,

  742. there is nothing

  743. this world can offer you

  744. for your godliness.

  745. The self-help mantra

  746. that says,

  747. you are enough,

  748. be the better you,

  749. be your true self,

  750. is not to be trusted.

  751. You are not enough,

  752. but that's okay

  753. because Christ is.

  754. He was enough

  755. and is enough

  756. and he has purchased

  757. all for you.

  758. All the spiritual blessings

  759. and the sweetness

  760. of his communion

  761. are given to you

  762. in Christ,

  763. to those who repentably,

  764. to those who the Spirit

  765. has made new.

  766. And we see in Romans 7-4

  767. that Christ has set us free

  768. that we may bear fruit

  769. for God.

  770. We have been set free

  771. from the law's rule

  772. and sin's dominion

  773. so that we may live

  774. for another,

  775. that our lives now

  776. may be lived

  777. to our faithful Savior,

  778. Jesus Christ.

  779. Verse 4 says,

  780. we belong to another.

  781. We are now united

  782. to Christ.

  783. We have died to the law

  784. and we now live

  785. for another.

  786. But the implications

  787. of this are so wonderful.

  788. As we go in Romans,

  789. you'll continue to see

  790. these implications.

  791. Romans 5 is a book

  792. of saying implications

  793. for being united to Christ.

  794. But get this,

  795. those who are in Christ

  796. are now bound to Christ

  797. for life.

  798. And nothing can separate

  799. them from His love.

  800. See, chapter 6,

  801. we are now united to Him.

  802. In chapter 8,

  803. at the end of it,

  804. nothing can separate us

  805. from Him.

  806. You are secure in Christ

  807. and you are in His love.

  808. And there isn't any sin,

  809. any principality,

  810. there is nothing on this world

  811. or in heaven

  812. that can separate you

  813. from Christ.

  814. You are free indeed,

  815. brothers and sisters,

  816. and you are free

  817. to worship Him

  818. and to live for Him.

  819. So point one,

  820. we had been under

  821. the rule of the law.

  822. Point two,

  823. Christ has set us free

  824. from the law.

  825. Now point number three

  826. is we live by the Spirit.

  827. Verse six says,

  828. we have been released

  829. from the law

  830. so we serve in the way

  831. of the Spirit

  832. and not in the way

  833. of the written code.

  834. The new way of the Spirit

  835. is what we call

  836. the covenant of grace.

  837. This is the new covenant

  838. promised in Ezekiel 36

  839. and Jeremiah 31.

  840. Will you turn to

  841. Ezekiel 36 with me?

  842. In Ezekiel 36,

  843. this is the new covenant promise

  844. that is to come

  845. for the Old Testament believers

  846. that is fulfilled in Christ.

  847. When Christ at the Lord's Supper

  848. said,

  849. this is my blood,

  850. the new covenant for you.

  851. He is enacting,

  852. He is initiating

  853. the new covenant

  854. now being applied

  855. to believers.

  856. Verses 25 through 28 say,

  857. I will sprinkle

  858. clean water on you

  859. and you shall be clean

  860. from all your uncleansliness

  861. and from all your idols

  862. I will cleanse you

  863. and I will give you

  864. a new heart

  865. and a new spirit

  866. I will put within you

  867. and I will remove

  868. the heart of stone

  869. from your flesh

  870. and give you

  871. a heart of flesh.

  872. I will put my spirit

  873. within you

  874. and cause you to walk

  875. in my statutes

  876. and be careful

  877. to obey my rules.

  878. You shall dwell

  879. in the land

  880. I gave to your fathers

  881. and you shall be

  882. my people

  883. and I will be your God.

  884. Ezekiel 36 promises

  885. a work in which

  886. God has already done

  887. for those who are in Christ.

  888. This is the work

  889. to cleanse us.

  890. This is the radical work

  891. of heart surgery.

  892. We are all born in Adam

  893. with a heart

  894. that is hard to God,

  895. that hates God,

  896. that does not want

  897. to love and serve Him.

  898. And this promise here

  899. says that God will

  900. remove this heart of stone,

  901. remove this hard heart

  902. and put a heart of flesh,

  903. a heart that desires

  904. to love God,

  905. desires to follow Him.

  906. We see it right here,

  907. it says that

  908. they will desire

  909. to do God's law,

  910. that they'll walk

  911. in my statutes.

  912. Now will you turn

  913. to Jeremiah 31 with me?

  914. This is another promise

  915. of the new covenant.

  916. Verses 31 through 34 say,

  917. Behold, the days are coming,

  918. declares the Lord,

  919. when I will make

  920. a new covenant

  921. with the house of Israel

  922. and the house of Judah,

  923. not like the covenant

  924. that I made

  925. with their fathers

  926. on the day

  927. when I took them

  928. by the hand

  929. to bring them

  930. out of the land of Egypt.

  931. My covenant they broke

  932. though I was their husband,

  933. declares the Lord.

  934. For this is the covenant

  935. that I will make

  936. with the house of Israel

  937. after those days,

  938. declares the Lord.

  939. I will put my law

  940. within them

  941. and I will write it

  942. on their hearts

  943. and I will be their God

  944. and they shall be my people.

  945. And no longer

  946. shall each one teach

  947. his neighbor

  948. and each brother

  949. and each his brother

  950. saying,

  951. Know the Lord

  952. for they shall all know me

  953. from the least

  954. to the greatest,

  955. declares the Lord.

  956. For I will forgive

  957. their iniquity

  958. and I will remember

  959. their sin no more.

  960. So Jeremiah 31

  961. is building on this promise

  962. of giving the spirit

  963. and in this promise

  964. he says that he's going

  965. to put his law

  966. within their heart

  967. and he's going to write it

  968. on their heart.

  969. It calls back to Ezekiel

  970. or calls forward to Ezekiel

  971. where it says

  972. that he'll cause them

  973. to walk in his statutes.

  974. What we see

  975. in Ezekiel 36

  976. and Jeremiah 31

  977. is the promised new covenant

  978. and it's the new way

  979. of the spirit.

  980. The way in which

  981. we now have the spirit

  982. that caused us

  983. to love God

  984. but also to obey his law,

  985. to please him,

  986. to express love to him.

  987. Before in Adam

  988. we had a heart of stone

  989. that hated God

  990. and loved sin.

  991. The law had bound us

  992. and we were in captivity.

  993. Sin reigned over us

  994. and we served it

  995. as an instrument

  996. of unrighteousness.

  997. God has done

  998. an amazing work.

  999. His spirit has done

  1000. the work of regeneration

1001. and given us new hearts.

1002. By the work of the spirit

1003. we partake in the covenant

  1004. of grace.

  1005. We've been united

  1006. to Christ

1007. and in the new way

  1008. of the spirit

1009. the law is within us

1010. and written on our hearts.

  1011. So to remind you

  1012. of Samuel Bolton's quote,

  1013. the law sends us

  1014. to the gospel

  1015. for justification.

  1016. The gospel sends us

  1017. to the law

1018. to frame our way of life.

  1019. The law is now

  1020. within us.

  1021. In Christ

  1022. we serve

  1023. by the new way

  1024. of the spirit.

  1025. And we can say

  1026. with Paul

1027. as in Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

1028. I delight in the law

  1029. of God

  1030. in my inner being.

  1031. And at the end

  1032. of chapter 7

  1033. he says

  1034. I serve the law

  1035. with God.

  1036. I serve the law

1037. of God in my mind

  1038. but my flesh

  1039. serves sin.

  1040. The law

  1041. is no longer

  1042. a hammer for us

  1043. but a staff

  1044. that guides us.

  1045. As those in Christ

  1046. walking in the statutes

  1047. of the moral law

  1048. is the expression

  1049. of love to God

1050. and to delight in him.

  1051. That's why

  1052. when it says

  1053. that we should love

  1054. our God

  1055. and love our neighbor

  1056. as ourself

  1057. that's the summary

  1058. of all the law

  1059. and the prophets

  1060. because the first

  1061. four commandments

  1062. is to love God

1063. and the first six commandments

  1064. is to love

  1065. our neighbor

  1066. as ourself.

  1067. So the commandments

  1068. should be something

  1069. that we see

  1070. as a delight now.

1071. I want to worship God.

  1072. I want to bear

  1073. his name well.

1074. I want to give time

  1075. to worship him well.

  1076. And then

  1077. I want to serve

1078. my brothers and sisters well.

  1079. I want to do

  1080. the one anotherings well.

1081. I care for your soul

1082. so I want to make sure

  1083. that there's no lust

  1084. in my heart.

1085. I want to make sure

  1086. that I don't consider

  1087. stealing

  1088. or being covetousness.

1089. I want to love you

  1090. as my own soul.

  1091. This is the life

  1092. in the spirit.

1093. The life that we say

  1094. Father I love you

  1095. because I keep

  1096. your commandments.

  1097. Our religion

  1098. is not law based

  1099. works based righteousness.

  1100. It is heart based.

  1101. This is what

  1102. Calvin would call

  1103. the third use

  1104. of the law.

  1105. What Calvin calls

  1106. the normative use

  1107. of the law.

  1108. It is the way

  1109. believers normally

  1110. use the law

  1111. for life and godliness.

  1112. This is how believers

  1113. relate to the law.

  1114. Compared to the unbeliever

  1115. who relate to it

  1116. in a civil

  1117. and evangelical way

  1118. the believers now

1119. relate it in a normative

  1120. way.

1121. If you turn to the

  1122. back of your bulletin

  1123. there's a quote

  1124. by Richard Sibbes

  1125. and it says

  1126. when we come

  1127. to be religious

  1128. we lose

  1129. not our pleasure

  1130. we don't lose

  1131. our pleasure

  1132. but we translate it

  1133. before we fed

  1134. on common notions

  1135. now we live

  1136. on holy truths.

1137. Do you see the change?

  1138. Before we lived

  1139. on the things

  1140. of the world

  1141. common notions

  1142. are sin

  1143. but now we live

  1144. on holy truths

  1145. and they are

  1146. pleasurable

  1147. they are delightful

  1148. they are great

  1149. to live by.

  1150. The 1689

  1151. London Baptist

  1152. Confession

  1153. is very informative

  1154. here.

  1155. In chapter 19

  1156. paragraph 7

  1157. it says

  1158. these uses

  1159. of the law

  1160. are not contrary

  1161. talking about

  1162. the civil

  1163. evangelical

  1164. and the normative

  1165. use.

  1166. They are not

  1167. contrary to one

  1168. another

  1169. they don't

  1170. oppose each other

  1171. these uses

  1172. of the law

  1173. are not contrary

  1174. to the grace

  1175. of the gospel

  1176. but are in

  1177. sweet harmony

  1178. with it

  1179. for the spirit

  1180. of Christ

  1181. subdues

  1182. and enables

  1183. the human will

  1184. to freely

  1185. and cheerfully

  1186. do what

  1187. the will of God

  1188. requires

  1189. in the scriptures.

  1190. The gospel

  1191. doesn't do away

  1192. with the moral law

  1193. but actually

  1194. strengthens it.

  1195. There is a sweet

  1196. harmony between

  1197. the law

  1198. and the gospel

  1199. but the law

  1200. is subservient

  1201. it serves

  1202. the gospel.

  1203. Through the gospel

  1204. and the work

  1205. of the spirit

  1206. believers

  1207. can freely

  1208. and cheerfully

  1209. do the ten commandments

  1210. we have them

  1211. as a joy

  1212. for us

  1213. but this

  1214. harmony

  1215. of law

  1216. and gospel

  1217. is essential

  1218. to the Christian

  1219. life.

  1220. As Christians

  1221. the light

  1222. of Christ

  1223. should shine

  1224. in every domain

  1225. of our lives.

  1226. It should affect

  1227. all of us

  1228. every aspect

  1229. of us.

  1230. So just two

  1231. places of application

  1232. for today

  1233. and then we

  1234. will be concluding.

  1235. Number one

  1236. our friendships

  1237. and our marriages

  1238. how does

  1239. law and gospel

  1240. harmony

  1241. law and gospel

  1242. distinction

  1243. affect our

  1244. friendships

  1245. and marriages?

  1246. In our

  1247. friendships

  1248. and or our

  1249. marriages

  1250. while we

  1251. greatly enjoy

  1252. both of those

  1253. relationships

  1254. the aim

  1255. is to please

  1256. and glorify

  1257. God.

  1258. That's what

  1259. they're designed

  1260. for.

  1261. He's given

  1262. these relationships

  1263. to us

  1264. as a gift

  1265. and in these

  1266. relationships

  1267. the law

  1268. and the gospel

  1269. are significantly

  1270. important.

  1271. If we live

  1272. these relationships

  1273. based on

  1274. perfect obedience

  1275. or extreme

  1276. expectation

  1277. we will be

  1278. left discouraged

  1279. and angry.

  1280. We must be

  1281. careful not to

  1282. build our

  1283. relationships

  1284. just based

  1285. on law

  1286. and to be

  1287. those who

  1288. bear our

  1289. friends with

  1290. the law

  1291. and our

  1292. marriages

  1293. with the

  1294. law

  1295. to enact

  1296. perfect obedience

  1297. from our

  1298. spouse

  1299. or to enact

  1300. perfect obedience

  1301. from our

  1302. friends.

  1303. Gospel living

  1304. is always

  1305. accompanied

  1306. with the

  1307. gospel.

  1308. We need

  1309. to hold

  1310. our friends

  1311. and spouse

  1312. to the

  1313. law of

  1314. God

  1315. as a

  1316. frame of

  1317. life

  1318. and when

  1319. they fail

  1320. we bring

  1321. it to their

  1322. attention

  1323. gently

  1324. and as

  1325. we bring

  1326. it to their

  1327. attention

  1328. we say

  1329. brother

  1330. sister

  1331. honey

  1332. whoever

  1333. you're

  1334. speaking

  1335. to

  1336. this

  1337. thing

  1338. you

  1339. said

  1340. or

  1341. this

  1342. thing

  1343. you

  1344. did

  1345. does

  1346. not

  1347. honor

  1348. the

  1349. Lord

  1350. the way

  1351. that it

  1352. should

  1353. and it

  1354. grieves me

  1355. that that

  1356. happened

  1357. and I

  1358. see my

  1359. own sin

  1360. too

  1361. but we

  1362. need to

  1363. be careful

  1364. and quickly

  1365. to ask

  1366. God

  1367. for help

  1368. so we

  1369. can repent

  1370. and enjoy

  1371. the life

  1372. in the

  1373. spirit.

  1374. It is a

  1375. beautiful

  1376. thing to

  1377. live by

  1378. law and

  1379. gospel

  1380. because the

  1381. law is

  1382. now a way

  1383. of life

  1384. that we

  1385. instruct and

  1386. love each

  1387. other by

  1388. and then it

  1389. provides gospel

  1390. interactions.

  1391. Your friendships

  1392. and your

  1393. marriages can

  1394. now be

  1395. built on

  1396. the gospel

  1397. because you

  1398. are faithful

  1399. to the

  1400. laws of

  1401. frame of

  1402. life

  1403. the normative

  1404. use.

  1405. So some

  1406. brief verses

  1407. faithful are the

  1408. wounds of a

  1409. friend

  1410. profuse are the

  1411. kisses of an

  1412. enemy.

  1413. See the

  1414. difference there

  1415. the comparison

  1416. faithful are the

  1417. wounds

  1418. profuse are the

  1419. kisses

  1420. proverbs 27

  1421. 6

  1422. iron sharpens

  1423. iron and

  1424. one man

  1425. sharpens

  1426. another

  1427. proverbs

  1428. 27

  1429. 17

  1430. when we

  1431. are doing

  1432. this well

  1433. when we

  1434. are balancing

  1435. law and

  1436. gospel well

  1437. we can say

  1438. of our

  1439. friendships and

  1440. marriages

  1441. oil and

  1442. perfume make

  1443. the heart

  1444. glad and

  1445. the sweetness

  1446. of a friend

  1447. comes from

  1448. earnest

  1449. counsel

  1450. proverbs

  1451. 27

  1452. 9

  1453. so number

  1454. one

  1455. friendships and

  1456. marriages

  1457. number two

  1458. parenting

  1459. the same

  1460. goes for

  1461. parenting

  1462. it should

  1463. affect every

  1464. aspect of

  1465. our lives

  1466. and there is

  1467. so much

  1468. parenting advice

  1469. out there

  1470. we've all

  1471. heard so much

  1472. and honestly

  1473. we're probably

  1474. affected by so

  1475. much even

  1476. stuff we don't

  1477. agree with

  1478. subconsciously

  1479. from what we

  1480. hear

  1481. some of this

  1482. advice is

  1483. really great

  1484. some of it

  1485. we should

  1486. keep and

  1487. use

  1488. some of it

  1489. is not so

  1490. great

  1491. some of it

  1492. is stuff we

  1493. shouldn't be

  1494. using because

  1495. it doesn't

  1496. advocate gospel

  1497. living

  1498. good parenting

  1499. advice preserves

  1500. the harmony

  1501. between law

  1502. and gospel

  1503. as parents

  1504. we have

  1505. delegated

  1506. authority

  1507. authority

  1508. given by

  1509. god to

  1510. exercise

  1511. godly

  1512. homes

  1513. we are

  1514. ambassadors

  1515. of the

  1516. gospel to

  1517. our

  1518. children

  1519. and there's

  1520. two ways

  1521. we typically

  1522. err or we

  1523. drift to

  1524. in our

  1525. parenting

  1526. number one

  1527. the use

  1528. of the

  1529. law

  1530. without

  1531. the

  1532. gospel

  1533. we give

  1534. our children

  1535. commands

  1536. and we

  1537. discipline

  1538. them without

  1539. bringing

  1540. them to

  1541. the

  1542. gospel

  1543. this type

  1544. of parenting

  1545. is law

  1546. based

  1547. parenting

  1548. and this

  1549. is binding

  1550. our children

  1551. under the

  1552. law

  1553. without giving

  1554. them any

  1555. hope in the

  1556. gospel of

  1557. jesus christ

  1558. number two

  1559. the use

  1560. of grace

  1561. without

  1562. the law

  1563. this type

  1564. of parenting

  1565. is when parents

  1566. give their

  1567. children a

  1568. command but

  1569. do not

  1570. discipline

  1571. them

  1572. the common

  1573. phrase tossed

  1574. !

  1575. around is I'm

  1576. giving them

  1577. grace

  1578. another way

  1579. this grace

  1580. based parenting

  1581. is applied

  1582. is that we

  1583. give commands

  1584. but we do

  1585. not require

  1586. first time

  1587. obedience

  1588. we do not

  1589. require them

  1590. to obey

  1591. us but we

  1592. let it

  1593. happen or

  1594. we excuse

  1595. their actions

  1596. both of

  1597. these areas

  1598. using the

  1599. law without

  1600. the gospel

  1601. and using

  1602. the gospel

  1603. without the

  1604. law do

  1605. not keep

  1606. the distinction

  1607. of law

  1608. and gospel

  1609. not keep

  1610. gospel living

  1611. primary

  1612. both areas

  1613. do not

  1614. preserve the

  1615. beauty of

  1616. law and

  1617. gospel

  1618. and Calvin's

  1619. use of the

  1620. law is very

  1621. helpful for us

  1622. here

  1623. the first

  1624. use is the

  1625. civil use

  1626. and if you

  1627. remember this

  1628. is the use

  1629. that restrains

  1630. evil but

  1631. tells us what

  1632. right and

  1633. wrong is

  1634. this is a

  1635. use that you

  1636. shouldn't want

  1637. to sin because

  1638. you don't like

  1639. the consequences

  1640. and this use

  1641. is used in

  1642. parenting we

  1643. tell our kids

  1644. do not do

  1645. this and if

  1646. you'll do

  1647. this this is

  1648. your consequence

  1649. and there's

  1650. expectations that

  1651. clear and right

  1652. and if they

  1653. break those

  1654. expectations we

  1655. discipline

  1656. them the

  1657. second use of

  1658. the law is

  1659. the evangelical

  1660. use in the

  1661. use of law

  1662. and discipline

  1663. we're aiming

  1664. our children

  1665. towards the

  1666. gospel all

  1667. parenting needs

  1668. to be needs

  1669. to have a

  1670. second use so

  1671. we can point

  1672. them to the

  1673. hope with

  1674. that said all

  1675. parenting needs

  1676. to have the

  1677. civil use so

  1678. we point our

  1679. children towards

  1680. the need for

  1681. the gospel if

  1682. we go into

  1683. one we veer

  1684. to more law

  1685. base if we

  1686. go to the

  1687. other we veer

  1688. more towards

  1689. cheap grace

  1690. we offer

  1691. grace without

  1692. the undergirding

  1693. of the law

  1694. but the

  1695. third use

  1696. the sweet

  1697. use is the

  1698. normative use

  1699. and this is

  1700. when your kid

  1701. professes faith

  1702. and in this

  1703. if your kid's a

  1704. believer we now

  1705. get to teach them

  1706. how to frame

  1707. their life around

  1708. the law

  1709. how do the

  1710. ten commandments

  1711. instruct us to

  1712. live to god

  1713. in a way that

  1714. is pleasing

  1715. in a way that

  1716. shows love

  1717. but in the

  1718. meantime i think

  1719. most of us

  1720. that are parenting

  1721. right now tend

  1722. to be under the

  1723. first and second

  1724. use we're

  1725. tending to

  1726. use the

  1727. civil use

  1728. to show

  1729. right and

  1730. wrong and

  1731. then we're

  1732. using the

  1733. second use

  1734. to point

  1735. them to

  1736. jesus we

  1737. disappoint and

  1738. we give

  1739. instruction and

  1740. all of this

  1741. should bring

  1742. point them

  1743. to jesus to

  1744. the grace that

  1745. jesus offers and

  1746. it should lead us

  1747. to pray much

  1748. because our

  1749. meager

  1750. our meager

  1751. abilities our

  1752. meager instruction

  1753. isn't going to

  1754. save our kids

  1755. they're not going

  1756. to be saved by

  1757. us but by

  1758. jesus christ and

  1759. the holy spirit

  1760. so we should

  1761. pray often in

  1762. parenting and

  1763. often in our

  1764. friendships because

  1765. it is the spirit

  1766. who works in

  1767. their hearts that

  1768. brings them to

  1769. salvation and it

1770. is god who is a

  1771. great savior for

  1772. us so praise god

  1773. for this great

  1774. salvation he's

  1775. a pride he's

  1776. provided may he

  1777. equip us to live

  1778. out his gospel in

  1779. a way that is

  1780. worthy in christ

  1781. jesus so in

  1782. conclusion in

  1783. adam the law

  1784. has rule over

  1785. us it had great

  1786. demands and gave

  1787. severe consequences

  1788. jesus as our

  1789. federal head

  1790. fulfilled the

  1791. law's demands

  1792. and bore the

  1793. consequences by

  1794. becoming a curse

  1795. because of christ's

  1796. work we are free

  1797. we partake of the

  1798. covenant of grace

  1799. and all of its

  1800. benefits the spirit

  1801. gives us new hearts

1802. and the law is now

  1803. within us while the

  1804. law exposes our

  1805. sins and sends us

  1806. to the gospel it

1807. now while it did do

  1808. that it now frames

  1809. our life and we

  1810. serve christ by the

  1811. spirit so in christ

  1812. we are free from

1813. the law so that we

1814. can serve him by the

  1815. spirit pray with me

1816. and we are free from

1817. our sins and sins and

1818. sins and sins and sins

1819. and sins and sins and

1820. sins and sins and sins and

1821. sins and sins and sins and

1822. sins and sins and sins and

1823. sins and sins and sins and sins and

1824. sins and sins and sins and sins and sins
