  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Romans chapter 7 with me.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  2. ! Romans 7, verses 7-25.

    Romans 7:7–25

  3. What then shall we say that the law is sin?

  4. By no means. Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin.

  5. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,

  6. You shall not covet.

  7. But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.

  8. For apart from the law, sin lies dead.

  9. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came,

  10. sin came alive and I died.

  11. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.

  12. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

  13. So the law is holy and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

  14. Did that which is good then bring death to me?

  15. By no means.

  16. It was sin producing death in me through what is good,

  17. in order that sin might be shown to be sin,

  18. and through the commandment might become sinful beyond all measure.

  19. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin.

  20. For I do not understand my own actions.

  21. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

  22. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law that it is good.

  23. So now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

  24. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.

  25. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

  26. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want, I keep on doing.

  27. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

  28. I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.

  29. For I delight in the law of God in my inner being,

  30. but I see in my members another law, waging war against the law of my mind,

  31. and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

  32. Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death?

  33. Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  34. So then, I myself serve the law of God in my mind,

  35. but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

  36. Pray with me.

  37. Father, we thank you that your word is powerful,

  38. and it cuts through joint marrow to the intentions of our heart.

  39. And as we consider our wrestling with sin and holiness in this life,

  40. help us, Lord.

  41. Convict us where we need to be convicted.

  42. Lord, let us stand and abide upon your truth,

  43. and let our hope be in Jesus Christ who will rescue us.

  44. In Jesus' name, amen.

  45. So last week, our sermon text was Romans 7, 1 through 6.

  46. In Romans 7, 1 through 6, the main idea was that in Christ,

  47. we have been set free from the law so that we can serve by the Spirit.

  48. We saw that unbelievers are under the rule of the law.

  49. When we're in Adam, the law held us captive to its holy and righteous standards.

  50. Under the law's dominion, we're required to give exact obedience,

  51. and if broken, we received its penalties.

  52. Galatians 3.10 says,

  53. Cursed is everyone who does not keep all things written in the book of the law.

  54. James 2.10 says,

  55. To break one part of the law is to break the whole law.

  56. So under the law's rules, our sinful passions were aroused,

  57. and we did works that produced bad fruit.

  58. We broke the law, and we deserve the penalties of it.

  59. Jesus Christ came and set us free from the law.

  60. As our federal head, he represented us.

  61. He lived and died in our place.

  62. To fulfill his covenant and provide us redemption,

  63. he himself went under the law and took its consequences.

  64. Jesus perfectly obeyed the law, fulfilling it for us.

  65. And Jesus sacrificially took the consequences of the law

  66. becoming a curse for us and removing our curse.

  67. Jesus represented us in keeping the law, enduring the curse.

  68. We've been freed from the rule of the law and its penalties.

  69. We now belong to another.

  70. We belong to Jesus Christ.

  71. The Son has set us free,

  72. and we are free indeed,

  73. brothers and sisters.

  74. The Holy Spirit then takes this work that Jesus did and unites us to Christ.

  75. He gives us new hearts and puts the law within us,

  76. causing us to walk in his ways.

  77. So now we serve by the way of the Spirit.

  78. We live to please God and to bear fruit for him.

  79. You are no longer under the law,

  80. but you are under grace.

  81. Now, as we come to Romans 7, 7 through 25,

  82. I'd like to introduce our text by revisiting Martin Luther's life

  83. for two reasons.

  84. Tuesday was Reformation Day,

  85. as we consider Martin Luther's stand and the other reformers

  86. as they worked to help remove us from,

  87. or remove themselves from,

  88. the dominion that they were under

  89. and the false beliefs of the gospel.

  90. As they stood on the gospel and justification by faith alone,

  91. through grace alone,

  92. and Christ alone.

  93. So I'd like to revisit that.

  94. The second reason is

  95. because his struggle that he had with temptation

  96. that he called infectum

  97. is a really good introduction to our text today.

  98. So as last week,

  99. I told you that Luther struggled with the temptation

  100. that he called infectum.

  101. He describes the struggle as dread,

  102. as anxiety,

  103. as foreboding doom.

  104. At one point, Luther said,

  105. there is not one corner in him

  106. that was not filled with the most bitterness,

  107. the most horror,

  108. the most fear-dollared,

  109. and all these things,

  110. this dread,

  111. this anxiety,

  112. this bitterness,

  113. seemed eternal.

  114. At the rustling of dry leaves,

  115. it seems as if the universe

  116. was going to collapse on him.

  117. This struggle led unbelieving Luther

  118. to the cross

  119. and to embrace a biblical understanding

  120. of justification by faith alone.

  121. But for Luther,

  122. this spiritual struggle,

  123. this temptation,

  124. is not merely momentary.

  125. For the rest of his life,

  126. he struggled with subsequent experiences

  127. of temptation

  128. that made him feel dreadful,

  129. made him feel sad and depressed,

  130. that brought great anxiety in him.

  131. Luther once said,

  132. temptation and experience

  133. certainly teach us

  134. that faith is a really difficult art.

  135. Luther contended

  136. that faith and theology

  137. are wrought

  138. on the anvil of temptation.

  139. For Luther,

  140. his commitment to be holy

  141. and to kill any sin within him

  142. produced this rich

  143. and steadfast faith,

  144. this unshakable faith

  145. that stood the temptations

  146. to be free from his struggles,

  147. that stood the temptations

  148. to be living

  149. and not be condemned

  150. and suffer death

  151. from the Roman Catholic Church.

  152. We may not struggle

  153. with the same experience as Luther,

  154. or we may,

  155. but for most of us,

  156. I don't think we have the intensity

  157. of this spiritual conflict.

  158. But we do all experience

  159. temptation of sin.

  160. And we all have a warfare

  161. where we wrestle with sin.

  162. There's ill thoughts

  163. and desires in our hearts,

  164. but we want to be holy.

  165. We want to follow God.

  166. We want to please God.

  167. So my hope today is

  168. as we come to Romans 7,

    Romans 7:7–25

  169. verses 7 through 25,

  170. that we see

  171. while we have been freed

  172. from the dominion of sin

  173. and while we've been freed

  174. from the law,

  175. there remains a war with sin

  176. until Jesus Christ rescues us.

  177. So if you have your bulletin,

  178. I provide an outline

  179. for this morning.

  180. And I'm going to read

  181. the three points on that outline.

  182. Point number one.

  183. We were sinful beyond measure.

  184. Point number two.

  185. We experience a war

  186. in the inner man.

  187. And point number three.

  188. We will be delivered

  189. from this body of death.

  190. So point one.

  191. We were sinful beyond measure.

  192. In verses 7 through 13,

  193. Paul describes his experience

  194. as an unbeliever.

  195. And we see this

  196. because all the verbs

  197. that are used

  198. are in the past tense.

  199. Communicating a past action.

  200. Something that's happening

  201. in the past.

  202. After verse 14,

  203. or after verse 13,

  204. Paul begins using

  205. a present tense.

  206. So the text is very clear

  207. that he's talking

  208. about the past.

  209. And then we get into

  210. verse 14.

  211. It becomes the present.

  212. He starts talking

  213. about his current struggle

  214. with temptation.

  215. Verses 7 through 13

  216. go to explain for us

  217. verse 5,

  218. which says,

  219. for while we are living

  220. in the flesh,

  221. our sinful passions

  222. aroused by the law,

  223. we're at work

  224. in our members

  225. to bear fruit for death.

  226. And then Romans 7,

  227. 7 through 14,

  228. describes how the law

  229. aroused sin

  230. while remaining

  231. holy and righteous.

  232. How does the law

  233. remain holy and righteous

  234. but in the same sense

  235. arouse sin,

  236. incite sin

  237. within the unbelieving heart?

  238. And we'll see

  239. that the law is good

  240. and the law is holy

  241. and the law is righteous

  242. but we are sinful

  243. beyond measure.

  244. It is the law

  245. that reveals our sin

  246. and sends us to the gospel

  247. for justification.

  248. So verse 7,

  249. we see another question posed

  250. to challenge our thinking.

  251. And then Paul provides us

  252. with the answer

  253. to the question

  254. to clarify this truth,

  255. to hone in on it

  256. so we have a good understanding

  257. of what he's communicating.

  258. So the verse says,

  259. what then shall we say?

  260. Is the law sin?

  261. Since the law arouses sin,

  262. is the law itself sin?

  263. By no means,

  264. Paul responds.

  265. And then he spends

  266. the next four verses

  267. explaining how the law

  268. is not sin.

  269. And he concludes

  270. in verse 12,

  271. the law is holy

  272. and the commandment

  273. is holy, righteous, and good.

  274. So Paul's conclusion

  275. is the question,

  276. is the law sin?

  277. Is that no,

  278. by no means,

  279. the law is not sin.

  280. The law is a reflection

  281. of God's perfections.

  282. What the law is doing

  283. in the unbeliever's life

  284. is exactly what it was

  285. purposed to do.

  286. It reveals the unrighteousness

  287. of the unbelieving heart.

  288. It reveals what sin is

  289. and it points people to Jesus,

  290. points to one

  291. who fulfilled the law for him,

  292. who took the curse.

  293. The law tells us

  294. what it is to be righteous,

  295. holy, and good.

  296. But it not only tells us

  297. what it is to be

  298. holy, righteous, and good.

  299. The law itself

  300. is holy, righteous, and good.

  301. The law comes from God

  302. and it reflects his character

  303. through its commands.

  304. To call the law sin

  305. would to accuse a lawgiver

  306. of being sinful.

  307. Paul explains

  308. that the law cannot be sin

  309. but because it reflects

  310. the giver's perfect being.

  311. It reflects God

  312. in its commands.

  313. So we see here

  314. that the Ten Commandments

  315. themselves are righteous

  316. and they show righteousness.

  317. They are holy

  318. and they show

  319. what it looks like

  320. to live a holy life.

  321. And they are good

  322. and they show

  323. what it is to be good.

  324. And the law

  325. ultimately points

  326. to God,

  327. the one who is

  328. supremely righteous,

  329. who is supremely good,

  330. and supremely holy.

  331. So in the following verses

  332. we're going to see

  333. the law's purpose

  334. in revealing sin.

  335. We see that the law

  336. exposes sin

  337. by delineating

  338. right from wrong.

  339. It's a perfect standard.

  340. It shows what God expects

  341. and shows what right is

  342. and what wrong is.

  343. For verse 7,

  344. it says,

  345. Yet if it had not been

  346. for the law,

  347. I would not have known sin.

  348. For I would not have known

  349. what it is to covet

  350. if the law had not said,

  351. You shall not covet.

  352. The law defines

  353. what sin is.

  354. It is like a lighthouse

  355. that shines into our hearts

  356. and exposes the sin within.

  357. It defines what it is

  358. to be contrary to God.

  359. What it is to be

  360. against God

  361. and His ways.

  362. So while God

  363. is chief good,

  364. God is holy

  365. and He is righteous

  366. and He is good,

  367. the law is the chief evil.

  368. It's a rejection

  369. of Him and His ways.

  370. Jeremiah Burroughs

  371. called the law

  372. or called the sin

  373. the evil of evils.

  374. Sin is a rejection

  375. of God

  376. and is lawless.

  377. Sin is heinous

  378. and it is a monstrosity.

  379. It should not be.

  380. Sin is pure evil

  381. and a grievous thing.

  382. Sin is a willful rejection

  383. of God

  384. and His sufficiency

  385. and who He is.

  386. It's a rejection

  387. of His holiness.

  388. He is righteous

  389. and sin is unrighteous.

  390. Sin loves the creature

  391. more than the creator.

  392. Sin exchanges the glory of God

  393. and enthrones idols.

  394. And the law reveals

  395. what this sin is.

  396. It delineates

  397. right from wrong.

  398. In the sinful passion

  399. of our flesh,

  400. apart from Christ,

  401. the understanding

  402. of the law

  403. aroused sin.

  404. In verse 8,

  405. Paul says,

  406. but sin,

  407. seizing an opportunity

  408. through the commandment,

  409. produced in me

  410. all kinds

  411. of covetousness.

  412. Here,

  413. Paul is portraying

  414. sin at work.

  415. Sin is an action.

  416. It's doing something.

  417. And the word

  418. for opportunity

  419. portrays

  420. military advancement,

  421. a military operation.

  422. So it's as if

  423. sin saw a weakness

  424. and through that weakness

  425. staged an assault.

  426. The commandment

  427. to not covet

  428. was the base

  429. of operations

  430. or the way

  431. in which

  432. sin attacked Paul

  433. and incited in Paul

  434. all types

  435. of covetousness.

  436. So the commandment

  437. that said

  438. do not covet

  439. then in the sinner

  440. aroused

  441. what it is to covet

  442. and to do more

  443. covetousness.

  444. It aroused sin.

  445. You can probably

  446. think of a time

  447. in your life

  448. when you were told

  449. not to do something

  450. and in being told

  451. not to do something

  452. it then provoked

  453. in you

  454. to do that thing

  455. that you're told

  456. not to do.

  457. Parents,

  458. you've probably seen

  459. this in your kids.

  460. As you tell them

  461. not to do something

  462. and then they do

  463. what you tell them

  464. not to do.

  465. Sin takes advantage

  466. of the law

  467. to stir in us

  468. more sin.

  469. In the depraved heart

  470. the commandment

  471. becomes a production

  472. factory

  473. where sin

  474. is mass produced

  475. and from it

  476. comes all kinds

  477. of covetousness.

  478. Paul describes

  479. a time

  480. when he was alive

  481. apart from the law.

  482. You see in the next verse

  483. it says

  484. I was alive

  485. apart from the law.

  486. He does not mean

  487. that he was not aware

  488. of the law.

  489. Paul was raised in law.

  490. He knew the Torah

  491. at a young age.

  492. He knew the commandments.

  493. This is talking

  494. about a time

  495. where Paul lived

  496. without an awareness

  497. of God's righteousness.

  498. Without an awareness

  499. that he was under

  500. judgment from the law

  501. and condemned by it.

  502. This is when

  503. we could call Paul

  504. a happy pagan.

  505. He lived

  506. self-righteous

  507. and self-assured

  508. in his pharisaical life.

  509. He lived

  510. as

  511. he would say

  512. that I was a Pharisee

  513. of Pharisees.

  514. He lived

  515. in this way

  516. that he enjoyed

  517. the world

  518. and the pleasure

  519. within.

  520. And we can also

  521. probably reflect

  522. on this time

  523. when before we came

  524. to Christ

  525. we lived in our sin

  526. unaware of God's law

  527. and we reveled in it.

  528. We enjoyed sin.

  529. It was

  530. our delight.

  531. But

  532. Paul goes on to say

  533. that when the commandment

  534. came

  535. it penetrated

  536. our hearts.

  537. It penetrated

  538. his heart.

  539. When the commandment

  540. came

  541. sin came alive

  542. and I died.

  543. When he grew

  544. an awareness

  545. of what sin is

  546. of his own wickedness

  547. the law brought

  548. conviction.

  549. It exposed him

  550. and in doing so

  551. he produced more sin

  552. but his sin

  553. continually was exposed.

  554. He continually felt

  555. this weight

  556. of conviction.

  557. Once he was alive

  558. apart from the law

  559. now he's dead

  560. according to Romans 7.

  561. Once he was alive

  562. but the law came

  563. and the sin

  564. deceived him

  565. and he was killed.

  566. Sin exposes

  567. to us

  568. or the law

  569. exposes to us

  570. sin.

  571. And sin

  572. deceives us

  573. and it kills us.

  574. It shows

  575. our inability

  576. to be righteous.

  577. It shows

  578. that we

  579. cannot live

  580. by the law

  581. but we live

  582. under the law

  583. in a poor state

  584. because we can't

  585. fulfill the commandments.

  586. We have no ability

  587. to keep them.

  588. So then Paul

  589. raises another question.

  590. So the law

  591. exposes sin.

  592. The second question

  593. Paul raises

  594. is

  595. did the good law

  596. bring death to me?

  597. And he responds

  598. again

  599. by no means.

  600. The law

  601. did its job.

  602. It exposed sin

  603. and made it known.

  604. It demonstrates

  605. our wretched state.

  606. It demonstrates

  607. that we could not

  608. be righteous

  609. and it said

  610. that from this exposure

  611. from the sin

  612. being made known

  613. to him

  614. that he was sinful

  615. beyond all measure.

  616. So Paul got to a point

  617. in his life

  618. where he was sinful

  619. beyond all measure

  620. but then came

  621. the gospel.

  622. because of Jesus'

  623. life,

  624. death,

  625. and resurrection

  626. Paul was set free

  627. from his great

  628. sinfulness

  629. and God has done

  630. the same work

  631. in us.

  632. If we

  633. apart from Christ

  634. look at the law

  635. it will show us

  636. how we can't

  637. fulfill it.

  638. It will show us

  639. all the places

  640. that we have broke it.

  641. It will show the times

  642. that we did not

  643. worship God.

  644. It will show all

  645. our array of idols.

  646. It will show the times

  647. we did not love

  648. our neighbor

  649. as ourselves.

  650. The times we covet

  651. and the times we lust

  652. and the times we steal.

  653. But Jesus Christ came

  654. he fulfilled the law

  655. and he took the curse

  656. for us

  657. and we have been set free

  658. from the rule

  659. of the law.

  660. We are now free

  661. in Christ.

  662. So after Paul

  663. explains his former

  664. sinful state

  665. he seeks to explain

  666. how sin still remains

  667. within us though.

  668. We have been freed

  669. from the dominion

  670. of sin

  671. we have been freed

  672. from the rule

  673. of the law

  674. but

  675. we still

  676. experience sin

  677. today.

  678. There is a battle

  679. between our new nature

  680. our new man

  681. and between our old nature

  682. and our old man.

  683. This battle

  684. has been won

  685. in Christ.

  686. Christ has defeated

  687. sin and death

  688. but until he comes again

  689. or until we die

  690. we will still

  691. experience this battle

  692. and one day

  693. we will be freed

  694. from this flesh

  695. and sin will be no more.

  696. So point number two

  697. we experience

  698. a war

  699. in the inner man.

  700. In verse 14

  701. Paul goes

  702. from speaking

  703. in the past

  704. to now speaking

  705. in the present

  706. and Paul is speaking

  707. of himself

  708. and his current

  709. experience.

  710. There is much

  711. argument

  712. much discussion

  713. among people

  714. about whether

  715. this text

  716. is speaking

  717. all about

  718. Paul's past life

  719. or if

  720. as Paul

  721. being a mature man

  722. this is a current

  723. experience

  724. for him.

  725. I think because

  726. he was speaking

  727. in the past

  728. and now he's speaking

  729. in the present

  730. it's clear

  731. that he's talking

  732. about his current

  733. life

  734. that he is

  735. writing to the Romans

  736. explaining that

  737. now he struggles

  738. with sin

  739. now he's waiting

  740. to be free

  741. from this body

  742. of death

  743. and I hope

  744. to show that

  745. as we continue.

  746. So all Christians

  747. struggle with sin

  748. until we will be

  749. home with God

  750. and free

  751. from this sinful

  752. nature.

  753. This is what

  754. Paul communicates

  755. in verse 14

  756. when he says

  757. Paul expresses

  758. attention here

  759. that he knows

  760. the law is spiritual

  761. but he still

  762. wrestles

  763. he's still in the

  764. flesh

  765. still under sin

  766. he still is

  767. sold into sin

  768. he's free from

  769. his dominion

  770. but it's still

  771. within him

  772. and this

  773. brings us

  774. to the question

  775. of how do we

  776. understand man

  777. for us to

  778. properly understand

  779. sex we need

  780. to have a

  781. biblical lens

  782. by which we

  783. see man

  784. how do we

  785. understand Paul's

  786. struggle and

  787. how does that

  788. help us understand

  789. our struggle

  790. so in describing

  791. man

  792. often the scriptures

  793. talk about

  794. inner man

  795. and outer man

  796. it talks about

  797. a physical

  798. bodily faculty

  799. this outer man

  800. and it talks about

  801. an inner faculty

  802. this spiritual

  803. emotional

  804. intellectual part

  805. of man

  806. that we call

  807. the inner man

  808. while the scriptures

  809. define inner man

  810. and outer man

  811. a physical body

  812. and a spiritual

  813. self that has

  814. emotions and

  815. intellect and

  816. desires

  817. these two cannot

  818. be fully separated

  819. the bible

  820. extinguished them

  821. but the body

  822. influences our soul

  823. and our soul

  824. influences our body

  825. what we have

  826. called this

  827. what this has been

  828. called

  829. is the

  830. psycho

  831. somatic union

  832. and basically

  833. that is saying

  834. the soul

  835. and body

  836. union

  837. or like what

  838. biblical counselors

  839. call it

  840. the embodied

  841. soul

  842. in the scriptures

  843. the inner man

  844. which is

  845. our spiritual

  846. state

  847. the intellectual

  848. our desires

  849. our thoughts

  850. all that

  851. stems

  852. from our

  853. inner man

  854. and often times

  855. this is talked

  856. about as the

  857. heart

  858. proverbs 423

  859. says

  860. keep your heart

  861. with all diligence

  862. for from it

  863. flows the spring

  864. of life

  865. so i say all

  866. that to say

  867. when we get to

  868. romans 7

  869. 14 through 25

  870. paul is exposing

  871. his inner man

  872. he's talking about

  873. the way he

  874. struggles inside

  875. himself

  876. the battle

  877. within his

  878. heart

  879. and i think as

  880. we get into

  881. this

  882. you can relate

  883. you can relate

  884. to how

  885. you struggle

  886. with sin

  887. and feel

  888. paul's tension

  889. so in romans

  890. 7 it's as if

  891. paul takes

  892. a surgeon's

  893. scapel

  894. and opens

  895. his heart

  896. to express

  897. a war

  898. that is occurring

  899. within himself

  900. within his

  901. heart

  902. in romans

  903. 7 23

  904. we read

  905. but i see

  906. in my members

  907. another law

  908. waging war

  909. against the

  910. law of my

  911. mind

  912. and making

  913. me captive

  914. to the law

  915. of sin

  916. that dwells

  917. in my

  918. members

  919. in romans

  920. 7 23

  921. there are

  922. two laws

  923. there is

  924. the law

  925. of sin

  926. and death

  927. the flesh

  928. and then there's

  929. the law

  930. of the spirit

  931. and there are

  932. two laws

  933. are waging war

  934. against one

  935. another

  936. we have

  937. often called

  938. this the

  939. old man

  940. and the

  941. new man

  942. the flesh

  943. and the spirit

  944. in romans

  945. 4 that's

  946. what paul

  947. calls it

  948. in romans

  949. 7 it's

  950. our new

  951. heart

  952. with renewed

  953. desires

  954. and it's

  955. our flesh

  956. with indwelling

  957. sin

  958. the law

  959. of the spirit

  960. of life

  961. and the law

  962. of sin

  963. and death

  964. but these

  965. laws

  966. he's talking

  967. about

  968. are not

  969. perfect

  970. standards

  971. they're not

  972. rules

  973. that are

  974. put before

  975. paul

  976. he's now

  977. talking about

  978. inward

  979. influences

  980. he's talking

  981. about

  982. principles

  983. that are

  984. in him

  985. there is a

  986. principle

  987. by which

  988. the spirit

  989. is in him

  990. producing life

  991. there's a

  992. principle

  993. by which

  994. indwelling

  995. sin is in

  996. him

  997. and influencing

  998. him

  999. and we

  1000. see this

  1001. in romans

  1002. 7

  1003. john owen

  1004. explains this

  1005. a little bit

  1006. further

  1007. he says

  1008. that these

  1009. influences

  1010. the spirit

  1011. and the

  1012. flesh

  1013. constantly

  1014. moves

  1015. and inclines

  1016. us

  1017. towards

  1018. any

  1019. action

  1020. these two

  1021. laws

  1022. within us

  1023. are powerful

  1024. and they're

  1025. affecting us

  1026. seeking

  1027. to move

  1028. us to

  1029. good

  1030. or to

  1031. evil

  1032. to

  1033. righteousness

  1034. to please

  1035. god

  1036. and love

  1037. him

  1038. or to

  1039. sin

  1040. and to

  1041. follow

  1042. the ways

  1043. of our

  1044. flesh

  1045. so let's

  1046. look at

  1047. each

  1048. principle

  1049. separately

  1050. the first

  1051. principle

  1052. the spirit

  1053. of life

  1054. this is

  1055. the holy

  1056. spirit

  1057. that has

  1058. given us

  1059. new

  1060. hearts

  1061. the bible

  1062. says

  1063. when we

  1064. become

  1065. christians

  1066. the holy

  1067. spirit

  1068. comes in

  1069. us

  1070. takes out

  1071. the heart

  1072. of stone

  1073. and puts

  1074. in a

  1075. heart

  1076. of flesh

  1077. the spirit

  1078. gives us

  1079. new hearts

  1080. and puts

  1081. the law

  1082. of god

  1083. within us

  1084. causing

  1085. us

  1086. desires

  1087. to follow

  1088. him

  1089. and do

  1090. his will

  1091. he has

  1092. changed

  1093. within us

  1094. our desires

  1095. to live

  1096. for ourselves

  1097. to live

  1098. the old

  1099. life that

  1100. paul was

  1101. talking about

  1102. in the

  1103. earlier

  1104. parts of

  1105. romans

  1106. 7

  1107. and now

  1108. we want

  1109. to do

  1110. good

  1111. there's a

  1112. desire in

  1113. us that

  1114. we want

  1115. to please

  1116. god

  1117. we want

  1118. to love

  1119. him

  1120. and to

  1121. delight

  1122. in him

  1123. and his

  1124. commandments

  1125. the spirit

  1126. is at work

  1127. in the

  1128. inner man

  1129. causing

  1130. us

  1131. and working

  1132. on us

  1133. to love

  1134. god

  1135. and to

  1136. delight

  1137. in his

  1138. law

  1139. and we

  1140. see this

  1141. in romans

    Romans 7:16

  1142. chapter 7

  1143. verse 16

  1144. says i agree

  1145. with the law

  1146. that it is

  1147. good

  1148. verse 18

  1149. i desire to

  1150. do what is

  1151. right

  1152. verse 22

  1153. i delight in

  1154. the law of god

  1155. in my inner

  1156. being

  1157. in verse 25

  1158. i myself

  1159. serve the law

  1160. of god

  1161. with my

  1162. mind

  1163. the holy

  1164. spirit is in

  1165. us now

  1166. and he is

  1167. doing a

  1168. work of

  1169. renovation

  1170. over the

  1171. span of

  1172. the christian's

  1173. life

  1174. the spirit

  1175. is changing

  1176. us

  1177. changing

  1178. the man

  1179. and making

  1180. us more

  1181. like

  1182. jesus

  1183. our lives

  1184. are being

  1185. conformed

  1186. now

  1187. to the

  1188. image

  1189. of christ

  1190. we are

  1191. being

  1192. transformed

  1193. from one

  1194. degree

  1195. of glory

  1196. to another

  1197. by the

  1198. work

  1199. of the

  1200. spirit

  1201. we call

  1202. this work

  1203. this transformation

  1204. this renovation

  1205. of the spirit

  1206. where the new

  1207. man is

  1208. growing and

  1209. helping us

  1210. love god

  1211. more

  1212. progressive

  1213. sanctification

  1214. philippians

  1215. 2 13

  1216. through 14

  1217. say

  1218. therefore

  1219. my beloved

  1220. as you have

  1221. always obeyed

  1222. so now

  1223. not only as

  1224. in my presence

  1225. but much more

  1226. in my absence

  1227. work out

  1228. your salvation

  1229. with fear

  1230. and trembling

  1231. for

  1232. it is god

  1233. who works

  1234. in you

  1235. to will

  1236. and to work

  1237. for his good

  1238. pleasure

  1239. see as even

  1240. now we desire

  1241. to do right

  1242. and do good

  1243. we desire to

  1244. love god

  1245. to keep his

  1246. commandments

  1247. and we do this

  1248. working it out

  1249. with fear

  1250. and trembling

  1251. but in the end

  1252. there is this new

  1253. man

  1254. the spirit

  1255. that is working

  1256. and willing

  1257. in us

  1258. transforming us

  1259. and conforming us

  1260. more into

  1261. christ

  1262. and one day

  1263. we will escape

  1264. the flesh

  1265. romans 8

  1266. 2 says

  1267. that the spirit

  1268. of life

  1269. has set you

  1270. free from

  1271. the law

  1272. of sin

  1273. and death

  1274. the law

  1275. and sin

  1276. and death

  1277. have been

  1278. killed

  1279. in our union

  1280. with christ

  1281. we're free

  1282. from the law

  1283. of sin

  1284. and death

  1285. the old man

  1286. is experiencing

  1287. a lingering death

  1288. while the new man

  1289. is experiencing

  1290. progressive life

  1291. do you see that

  1292. that our flesh

  1293. is slowly dying

  1294. and one day

  1295. we'll be gone

  1296. and our spiritual side

  1297. our spiritual man

  1298. is continually

  1299. growing

  1300. and progressing

  1301. as we look

  1302. to be holy

  1303. and look more

  1304. like god

  1305. so that leads us

  1306. to the bulk

  1307. of this text

  1308. the second principle

  1309. which is

  1310. the influence

  1311. the principle

  1312. of the law

  1313. of sin and death

1314. this is the old man

  1315. this is what paul

  1316. calls his flesh

  1317. this is the sin

  1318. that remains

  1319. in us

  1320. so let's look

  1321. at how

  1322. romans 7

  1323. talks about

  1324. this law

  1325. this influence

  1326. of the flesh

  1327. verse 14

1328. i am of the flesh

  1329. sold under sin

  1330. verse 15

  1331. i do not understand

  1332. my actions

  1333. verse 15

1334. i do the very thing

  1335. i hate

  1336. verse 17

  1337. sin dwells

  1338. within me

  1339. verse 18

  1340. nothing good

  1341. dwells in me

1342. that is in my flesh

  1343. verse 18

  1344. i do not have

  1345. the ability

  1346. to carry out

  1347. good

  1348. verse 19

  1349. the evil

  1350. i do not want

  1351. is what

  1352. i keep doing

  1353. verse 20

  1354. sin dwells

  1355. within me

  1356. verse 21

  1357. evil lies

  1358. close at hand

  1359. verse 23

  1360. indwelling sin

  1361. is making me

  1362. captive

  1363. to the law

  1364. of sin

  1365. in verse 24

  1366. we live

  1367. in a body

  1368. of death

  1369. and finally

  1370. verse 25

  1371. with my flesh

  1372. i serve

  1373. the law

  1374. of sin

  1375. it is clear

  1376. that this condition

  1377. this flesh

  1378. that we have

  1379. is active

  1380. and that

  1381. while we do good

  1382. evil lies

  1383. close at hand

  1384. there's this tension

  1385. between

  1386. the spiritual nature

  1387. and the old man

  1388. new man

  1389. and old man

  1390. and our indwelling

  1391. sin

  1392. has powerful

  1393. influence on us

  1394. it's seeking

  1395. to capture us

  1396. to captivate us

  1397. and to lead us

  1398. into more

  1399. evil

  1400. we do not

  1401. understand

  1402. the extent

  1403. of the influence

  1404. that's in us

  1405. by this sin

  1406. or always how

  1407. it is working

  1408. but while we are

  1409. in this body

  1410. we're experiencing

  1411. its poisonous effects

  1412. its influence

  1413. upon us

  1414. james 1 13

  1415. says that

  1416. our flesh

  1417. entices us

  1418. and drags us

  1419. away

  1420. in romans 7

  1421. our flesh

  1422. deceives us

  1423. this inward

  1424. influence

  1425. is so deep

  1426. that paul says

  1427. that he cannot

  1428. understand

  1429. its depths

  1430. of its influence

  1431. in fact

  1432. he says

  1433. he does

  1434. the very thing

  1435. he hates

  1436. because of

  1437. its effectual

  1438. influence

  1439. on him

  1440. the effect

  1441. of indwelling

  1442. sin

  1443. is so deep

  1444. in us

  1445. that we

  1446. do right

  1447. but evil

  1448. is close

  1449. at hand

  1450. and while

  1451. we live

  1452. in this body

  1453. everything

  1454. we do

  1455. evil

  1456. will always

  1457. be close

  1458. by us

  1459. trying to

  1460. sway us

  1461. trying to

  1462. entice

  1463. us

  1464. into sin

  1465. the flesh

  1466. wants us

  1467. to follow

  1468. its desires

  1469. so in

  1470. John

  1471. Owen's

  1472. work

  1473. that he

  1474. calls

  1475. indwelling

  1476. sin

  1477. he says

  1478. this

  1479. regarding

  1480. the tension

  1481. and regarding

  1482. the law

  1483. of sin

  1484. wherever

  1485. you are

  1486. whatever

  1487. you are

  1488. about

  1489. the law

  1490. of sin

  1491. is always

  1492. in you

  1493. in the best

  1494. that you

  1495. do

  1496. in the worst

  1497. men

  1498. little

  1499. consider

  1500. what a

  1501. dangerous

  1502. companion

  1503. is always

  1504. at home

  1505. with them

  1506. when they

  1507. are in

  1508. company

  1509. when alone

  1510. by night

  1511. or by day

  1512. all is

  1513. one

  1514. sin

  1515. is with

  1516. them

  1517. there is

  1518. a living

  1519. coal

  1520. continually

  1521. in their

  1522. house

  1523. which

  1524. if it

  1525. is not

  1526. looked

  1527. after

  1528. will burn

  1529. up in

  1530. fire

  1531. and it

  1532. may

  1533. consume

  1534. them

  1535. oh

  1536. the woeful

  1537. security

  1538. of poor

  1539. souls

  1540. how little

  1541. do most

  1542. men

  1543. think of

  1544. this

  1545. inbred

  1546. enemy

  1547. that is

  1548. never

  1549. away

  1550. from

  1551. home

  1552. how little

  1553. for the

  1554. most part

  1555. doth

  1556. the watchfulness

  1557. of any

  1558. professors

  1559. answer

  1560. the danger

  1561. of their

  1562. state

  1563. and their

  1564. condition

  1565. brothers

  1566. and sisters

  1567. our

  1568. inner man

  1569. is always

  1570. waging war

  1571. within us

  1572. between living

  1573. in the spirit

  1574. and living

  1575. in the flesh

  1576. and there

  1577. is great

  1578. application

  1579. here

  1580. this comes

  1581. home to

  1582. us

  1583. this goes

  1584. into our

  1585. daily

  1586. experience

  1587. and what

  1588. we learn

  1589. is that

  1590. the greatest

  1591. enemy

  1592. is not

  1593. outside

  1594. of us

  1595. it is not

  1596. our spouse

  1597. it is not

  1598. our friends

  1599. it is not

  1600. our children

  1601. our jobs

  1602. our health

  1603. or our

  1604. vices

  1605. the greatest

  1606. enemy

  1607. that we

  1608. have

  1609. is within

  1610. us

  1611. it is

  1612. sin

  1613. that dwells

  1614. in us

  1615. our greatest

  1616. problem

  1617. is not

  1618. outside

  1619. of us

  1620. but

  1621. within

  1622. us

  1623. it is

  1624. the sin

  1625. that dwells

  1626. in you

  1627. the enemy

  1628. is a

  1629. dangerous

  1630. companion

  1631. that

  1632. is always

  1633. close at

  1634. hand

  1635. this enemy

  1636. is always

  1637. seeking to

  1638. seduce you

  1639. and sway

  1640. you

  1641. by its

  1642. power

  1643. indwelling

  1644. sin

  1645. is a

  1646. siren

  1647. call

  1648. seeking

  1649. to lead

  1650. poor

  1651. souls

  1652. away

  1653. to its

  1654. lusts

  1655. and desires

  1656. think

  1657. dear

  1658. believer

  1659. of the

  1660. times

  1661. your

  1662. heart

  1663. is

  1664. easily

  1665. tempted

  1666. of

  1667. speaking

  1668. ill

  1669. of

  1670. others

  1671. think

  1672. about

  1673. the

  1674. times

  1675. that

  1676. poisonous

  1677. words

  1678. come in

  1679. your

  1680. mind

  1681. of

  1682. gossip

  1683. or

  1684. slander

  1685. or

  1686. come out

  1687. of your

  1688. mouth

  1689. towards

  1690. others

  1691. think

  1692. about

  1693. how

  1694. quick

  1695. a

  1696. wayward

  1697. thought

  1698. comes

  1699. into

  1700. our

  1701. mind

  1702. and

  1703. entices

  1704. us

  1705. with

  1706. its

  1707. lust

  1708. think

  1709. how

  1710. deceptive

  1711. our

  1712. flesh

  1713. is

  1714. at

  1715. forming

  1716. idols

  1717. in

  1718. us

  1719. when

  1720. we

  1721. don't

  1722. even

  1723. know

  1724. !

  1725. and then

  1726. we

  1727. see

  1728. them

  1729. and

  1730. we

  1731. work

  1732. to

  1733. get

  1734. rid

  1735. of

  1736. them

  1737. brothers

  1738. and

  1739. sisters

  1740. look

  1741. after

  1742. this

  1743. burning

  1744. coal

  1745. of

  1746. indwelling

  1747. sin

  1748. when

  1749. the

  1750. siren

  1751. call

  1752. is

  1753. sounding

  1754. plug

  1755. your

  1756. ears

  1757. tie

  1758. yourself

  1759. to

  1760. the

  1761. mass

  1762. pluck

  1763. out

  1764. your

  1765. eyes

  1766. cut

  1767. off

  1768. your

  1769. hands

  1770. do

  1771. not

  1772. fall

  1773. into

  1774. the

  1775. grips

  1776. of

  1777. the

  1778. enemy

  1779. do

  1780. not

  1781. let

  1782. sin

  1783. lead

  1784. your

  1785. life

  1786. and

  1787. entice

  1788. you

  1789. with

  1790. this

  1791. I'd

  1792. like

  1793. to

  1794. offer

  1795. five

  1796. points

  1797. of

  1798. application

  1799. number

  1800. one

  1801. be

  1802. watchful

  1803. we

  1804. are

  1805. much

  1806. more

  1807. sinful

  1808. and

  1809. viler

  1810. than

  1811. we

  1812. think

  1813. our

  1814. sin

  1815. and

  1816. satan

  1817. are

  1818. seeking

  1819. to

  1820. snare

  1821. us

  1822. it

  1823. says

  1824. that

  1825. the

  1826. devil

  1827. is

  1828. scheming

  1829. schemes

  1830. and

  1831. temptations

  1832. to

  1833. catch

  1834. us

  1835. we

  1836. need

  1837. to

  1838. be

  1839. sensitive

  1840. we

  1841. need

  1842. to

  1843. have

  1844. a

  1845. sensitive

  1846. conscience

  1847. to

  1848. sin

  1849. our

  1850. conscience

  1851. is

  1852. God's

  1853. gift

  1854. to

  1855. us

  1856. it's

  1857. God's

  1858. deputy

  1859. of

  1860. our

  1861. soul

  1862. it's

  1863. God's

  1864. court

  1865. for

  1866. our

  1867. lives

  1868. a

  1869. sensitive

  1870. conscience

  1871. knows

  1872. God's

  1873. law

  1874. and

  1875. it

  1876. examines

  1877. our

  1878. thoughts

  1879. our

  1880. motives

  1881. and

  1882. our

  1883. actions

  1884. by

  1885. it

  1886. and

  1887. if

  1888. they

  1889. contradict

  1890. it

  1891. it

  1892. seeks

  1893. to

  1894. kill

  1895. that

  1896. sin

  1897. it

  1898. watches

  1899. to

  1900. see

  1901. if

  1902. our

  1903. words

  1904. are

  1905. God

  1906. honoring

  1907. it

  1908. checks

  1909. to

  1910. see

  1911. if

  1912. our

  1913. motives

  1914. are

  1915. God

  1916. exalting

  1917. and

  1918. it

  1919. searches

  1920. our

  1921. desires

  1922. to

  1923. expose

  1924. any

  1925. self

  1926. exalting

  1927. self

  1928. pleasing

  1929. impulse

  1930. so

  1931. labor

  1932. brothers

  1933. and

  1934. to

  1935. yield

  1936. the

  1937. law

  1938. as

  1939. an

  1940. instrument

  1941. of

  1942. your

  1943. conscience

  1944. and

  1945. expose

  1946. sin

  1947. and

  1948. kill

  1949. it

  1950. verse

  1951. 21

  1953. even

  1954. when we

  1955. seek

  1956. to do

  1957. right

  1958. evil

  1959. lies

  1960. close

  1961. at

  1963. the

  1964. most

  1965. holy

  1966. sin

  1967. to

  1968. sin

  1969. to

  1970. to

  1971. sin

  1972. to

  1973. sin

  1974. !

  1975. !

  1976. to

  1977. press

  1978. on

  1979. humility

  1980. is

  1981. an

  1982. antidote

  1983. to

  1984. pride

  1985. because

  1986. it

  1987. depends

  1988. on

  1989. God

  1990. and

  2953. stricken

  2954. then

  2955. see

  2956. his

  2957. foes

  2958. lie

  2959. crushed

  2960. beneath

  2961. his

  2962. feet

  2963. for

  2964. the

  2965. conqueror

  2966. has

  2967. risen

  2968. and

  2969. as

  2970. the

  2971. stone

  2972. is

  2973. rolled

  2974. away

  2975. and

  2976. Christ

  2977. emerges

  2978. from

  2979. the

  2980. grave

  2981. this

  2982. victory

  2983. march

  2984. continues

  2985. till

  2986. the

  2987. day

  2988. every

  2989. eye

  2990. and

  2991. heart

  2992. will

  2993. see

  2994. him

  2995. so

  2996. spirit

  2997. come

  2998. put

  2999. strength

  3000. in

  3001. every

  3002. stride

  3003. give

  3004. grace

  3005. for

  3006. every

  3007. hurdle

  3008. that

  3009. we

  3010. may

  3011. !

  3012. run

  3013. with

  3014. faith

  3015. to

  3016. win

  3017. the

  3018. prize

  3019. of

  3020. his

  3021. servant

  3022. good

  3023. and

  3024. faithful

  3025. as

  3026. saints

  3027. of

  3028. old

  3029. line

  3030. the

  3031. way

  3032. retelling

  3033. triumphs

  3034. of

  3035. his

  3036. grace

  3037. we

  3038. hear

  3039. their

  3040. calls

  3041. and

  3042. hunger

  3043. for

  3044. the

  3045. day

  3046. when

  3047. with

  3048. Christ

  3049. we

  3050. stand

  3051. in

  3052. glory

  3053. will

  3054. you

  3055. pray

  3056. with

  3057. me
