    Romans 8 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Our text for today is Romans chapter 8 verses 1 through 4.

    Romans 8:1–4

  4. !

  5. Romans would be the gem that enhanced that ring.

  6. And Romans 8 would be the brilliant splendor that emanated from that ring.

  7. This is perhaps my favorite chapter in the Bible.

  8. In fact, when I suggested that we study Romans as a church to your elders,

  9. I had this chapter in mind.

  10. So the rest of it is of great value.

  11. The entirety of the book is good for us.

  12. But oh, chapter 8.

  13. I have been long awaiting getting to this text.

  14. So let's not delay as we have planned to look at the first four verses today.

  15. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved.

  16. This is God's Word to us.

  17. It was written for His glory and our good.

  18. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  19. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  20. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

  21. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  22. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.

  23. In order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh,

  24. but according to the Spirit.

  25. Our text this morning begins with,

  26. There is therefore now.

  27. So let's briefly think about what he means by this opening phrase.

  28. He certainly means something that he's going to say in the text,

  29. but I also think he's generally referencing back to the entire letter up to this point.

  30. So let's draw a straight line through his argument to get our bearing for today.

  31. You may remember back in Romans chapter 1, verse 16 and 17,

    Romans 1:16

  32. Paul's thesis statement for the entirety of his letter.

  33. There he says,

  34. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, or hear it in the positive,

  35. I am proud of the good news of Christ,

  36. for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  37. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  38. For in it, the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  39. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  40. And we have been driving the point that we are saved,

  41. we are declared righteous, justified before God by grace alone,

  42. through faith alone,

  43. in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  44. And I have been contending to you that this is not a thing that should be assumed in our day,

  45. but it's a thing that should be held onto and held tightly onto and contended for.

  46. He then begins to set up the great problem of sin in the world.

  47. We'll pick up in chapter 2, verse 12 and 13.

  48. There he says,

  49. For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, Gentiles.

  50. And all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law, Israelites.

  51. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God,

  52. but the doers of the law who will be justified.

  53. But then he goes on to talk about in chapter 3 how none is righteous.

  54. No, not one.

  55. So if it's the doers of the law who will be justified,

  56. then we have a great problem.

  57. We cannot be justified by our doing of the law

  58. because we have already failed in our keeping of the law.

  59. So chapter 5 and verse 1, there he says,

  60. Therefore, since we have been justified by, not our works, but by faith,

  61. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. Justified by grace through faith in Christ.

  63. And then chapter 6 and verse 6, there he writes,

  64. We know that our old self was crucified with him

  65. in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing

  66. so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  67. And we've been working out all that this means

  68. through the rest of chapter 6 and through chapter 7.

  69. But I think not only is Paul generally referencing back to the entire letter,

  70. but he is also certainly specifically referencing the end of chapter 7.

  71. So read with me from verse 23 to the end.

  72. There he says, he's stated that he's been set free from the power of sin,

  73. but here he says,

  74. I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind

  75. and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

  76. There's this struggle still in this life with his old self.

  77. He's got new desires and yet he seems to be at competition within.

  78. In verse 24 he breaks out and says,

  79. Wretched man that I am,

  80. who would deliver me from this body of death?

  81. And the answer is that question,

  82. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  83. And that's where we pick up.

  84. Sometimes our chapter breaks are very helpful to us in our Bibles.

  85. And sometimes they are not.

  86. This is one of the cases I wish that there was not a chapter break here.

  87. Because it goes right into this,

  88. There is therefore now

  89. no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  90. No condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  91. The Greek word here rendered condemnation

  92. relates to the sentencing of a crime,

  93. but focuses not on the verdict,

  94. but on the penalty the verdict demands.

  95. Its emphasis is not on the declaration of guilt,

  96. but on the price that must be paid

  97. for the crime of rebellion against our God.

  98. Paul tells us that for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  99. there is no longer any condemnation.

  100. There's no longer a price that must be paid

  101. for it was paid for us.

  102. However, the implication is that for those who are not in Christ Jesus,

  103. there is condemnation.

  104. And we must take some time to consider this.

  105. If we're to rightly appreciate what it means

  106. for there to be no condemnation,

  107. what does it mean for there to be condemnation?

  108. Paul has told us previously in the letter

  109. what sin has purchased for us

  110. if we are not in Christ Jesus.

  111. Chapter 6 and verse 23,

  112. For the wages of sin is death.

  113. Death, not just temporal, which we will all experience,

  114. but eternal death awaits all who are not in Christ Jesus.

  115. death forever.

  116. We get some perhaps hint of what that may look like,

  117. although it's a horror I don't want to imagine.

  118. Jesus says in Luke chapter 13, verse 27 and 28,

    Luke 13:27

  119. I tell you, I do not know where you come from.

  120. Depart from me, all you workers of evil.

  121. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  122. When you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,

  123. and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,

  124. but you yourselves cast out.

  125. So at very least, it's a place of great sorrow and concern.

  126. Death forever.

  127. Do not be mistaken this morning.

  128. The most important thing about you,

  129. the most important thing,

  130. we have so many things we tend to want to define ourselves by,

  131. but the most important thing about you

  132. is whether or not you are in Christ Jesus.

  133. At the end of all things,

  134. nothing else will matter.

  135. The American pastor, Jonathan Edwards,

  136. once preached a sermon called

  137. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

  138. He preached it in 1741,

  139. which is in the midst of the Great Awakening,

  140. and it was an exposition of Deuteronomy chapter 32 and verse 35.

    Deuteronomy 32 chapter mention

  141. I want to read to you just a short excerpt from this sermon.

  142. I'm going to do my best to read it well,

  143. but history tells us that he read this standing at the back of this room.

  144. He wasn't facing anybody.

  145. Nobody was looking at him,

  146. and he read it extremely flat.

  147. And yet people were begging him to stop reading

  148. because of the conviction they were feeling.

  149. But I'll try to read it better for your benefit.

  150. He said this,

  151. There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God.

  152. There is hell's wide, gaping mouth open,

  153. and you have nothing to stand upon,

  154. nor anything to take hold of.

  155. There is nothing between you and hell but the air.

  156. It is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up.

  157. You probably are not sensible of this.

  158. You find you are kept out of hell,

  159. but you do not see the hand of God in it,

  160. but look at other things,

  161. at the good state of your bodily constitution,

  162. your care of your own life,

  163. and the means you use for your own preservation.

  164. But indeed, these things are nothing.

  165. If God should withdraw his hand,

  166. they would avail no more to keep you from falling

  167. than the thin air to hold up a person

  168. that is suspended in it.

  169. Your wickedness makes you, as it were, heavy as lead,

  170. and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell.

  171. And if God should let you go,

  172. you would immediately sink and swiftly descend

  173. and plunge into the bottomless gulf

  174. and your healthy constitution

  175. and your own care and prudence

  176. and best contrivance

  177. and all your righteousness

  178. would have no more influence to uphold you

  179. and keep you out of hell

  180. than a spider's web would have

  181. to stop a falling rock.

  182. Were it not for the sovereign pleasure of God,

  183. the earth would not bear you one moment,

  184. for you are a burden to it.

  185. The creation groans with you.

  186. The creature is made subject to the bondage of your corruption.

  187. The sun does not willingly shine upon you

  188. to give you light to serve sin and Satan.

  189. The earth does not willingly yield her increase

  190. to satisfy your lusts,

  191. nor is it willingly a stage for your wickedness to be acted upon.

  192. The air does not willingly serve you for breath

  193. to maintain the flame of life in your vitals

  194. while you spend your life in the service of God's enemies.

  195. God's creatures are good

  196. and were made for men to serve God with

  197. and do not willingly subserve to any other purpose

  198. and groan when they are abused to purposes

  199. so directly contrary to their nature and end.

  200. And the world would spew you out

  201. were it not for the sovereign hand of him

  202. who has subjected it in hope.

  203. There are the black clouds of God's wrath

  204. now hanging directly over your heads,

  205. full of the dreadful storm

  206. and big with thunder.

  207. And were it not for the restraining hand of God,

  208. it would immediately burst forth upon you.

  209. You don't hear preaching like that much anymore.

  210. If you are not in Christ Jesus,

  211. condemnation awaits you.

  212. Death forevermore.

  213. flee to Christ,

  214. that you would be saved.

  215. Believe that he paid the penalty for your sin on the cross.

  216. He bore your condemnation

  217. and that he perfectly kept the law on your behalf.

  218. Find yourself in Christ Jesus

  219. by grace alone,

  220. through faith alone,

  221. in him alone.

  222. condemnation.

  223. Because, oh,

  224. in Christ Jesus,

  225. there is no longer

  226. any

  227. condemnation.

  228. Some of you may have been

  229. asked to read in school

  230. an excerpt

  231. like the one I read

  232. from Edward's famous sermon

  233. to show how terrible

  234. American Puritanism was.

  235. I was asked to do this

  236. in a college English class.

  237. There is a reason

  238. you were not assigned

  239. the entirety

  240. of the text.

  241. I made a pretty grand point

  242. of this

  243. in my English class

  244. in college.

  245. Later in that same sermon,

  246. Edward says,

  247. And now,

  248. you have an extraordinary

  249. opportunity.

  250. A day wherein Christ

  251. has thrown the door

  252. of mercy

  253. wide open

  254. and stands in

  255. calling and crying

  256. with a loud voice

  257. to poor sinners.

  258. A day wherein

  259. many are flocking

  260. to him

  261. and pressing

  262. into the kingdom

  263. of God.

  264. Many are daily

  265. coming from the east,

  266. west,

  267. north,

  268. and south.

  269. Many that were

  270. very lately

  271. in the same

  272. miserable condition

  273. that you are in

  274. are now

  275. in a happy state

  276. with their hearts

  277. filled with love

  278. to him

  279. who has loved them

  280. and washed them

  281. from their sins

  282. in his own blood

  283. and rejoicing

  284. in hope

  285. of the glory

  286. of God.

  287. Beloved,

  288. in Christ Jesus,

  289. there is no

  290. longer

  291. any

  292. condemnation.

  293. Because of the

  294. completed work

  295. of Jesus Christ,

  296. the sentence

  297. that we

  298. fully

  299. deserved

  300. has been

  301. commuted.

  302. We have passed

  303. from death

  304. to life,

  305. from enemies

  306. to friends.

  307. We were once

  308. estranged,

  309. but now

  310. we belong.

  311. Hear me

  312. carefully

  313. this morning.

  314. This declaration

  315. of Paul's,

  316. there is therefore

  317. now no

  318. condemnation

  319. for those

  320. who are in

  321. Christ Jesus,

  322. does not

  323. depend

  324. on you.

  325. It does not

  326. serve at the

  327. whim of your

  328. emotions.

  329. It depends

  330. entirely

  331. on God,

  332. so it

  333. is

  334. sure.

  335. I hope

  336. that you

  337. can rest

  338. in that.

  339. God

  340. accomplishes

  341. all that

  342. he sets

  343. out to

  344. and all

  345. of his

  346. promises

  347. are kept.

  348. Our salvation

  349. finds its

  350. confidence

  351. in him.

  352. But I know

  353. that you

  354. sometimes have

  355. a hard time

  356. believing this.

  357. I sometimes

  358. have a hard

  359. time

  360. believing

  361. this.

  362. You are

  363. in good

  364. company,

  365. as am I.

  366. Listen to

  367. Paul once

  368. again,

  369. Romans 7,

  370. 23-25.

  371. I see

  372. in my

  373. members

  374. another

  375. law

  376. waging war

  377. against the

  378. law of

  379. my mind

  380. and making

  381. me captive

  382. to the

  383. law of

  384. sin that

  385. dwells

  386. in my

  387. members.

  388. Wretched

  389. man

  390. that I

  391. am,

  392. who will

  393. deliver me

  394. from this

  395. body of

  396. death?

  397. What does

  398. he say

  399. next?

  400. In verse

  401. 25,

  402. does he

  403. say that

  404. he must

  405. deliver

  406. himself?

  407. Does he

  408. say that

  409. perhaps

  410. tomorrow

  411. he will

  412. perform

  413. better

  414. and feel

  415. better?

  416. No.

  417. What does

  418. he say?

  419. Thanks be

  420. to God

  421. through Jesus

  422. Christ,

  423. our Lord.

  424. God does

  425. the saving

  426. and the

  427. keeping.

  428. There is

  429. therefore

  430. now no

  431. condemnation

  432. for those

  433. who are

  434. in

  435. Christ

  436. Jesus

  437. regardless

  438. of how

  439. you might

  440. feel about

  441. it.

  442. Some of

  443. you may

  444. have

  445. noticed

  446. I brought

  447. my copy

  448. of

  449. Pilgrim's

  450. Progress

  451. with me

  452. today.

  453. So I'll

  454. read a bit

  455. more to

  456. you from

  457. it.

  458. The driving

  459. point I'm

  460. making here

  461. is that the

  462. experience is

  463. common

  464. that we

  465. might feel

  466. at times

  467. this strain.

  468. how can

  469. it be

  470. true of

  471. me

  472. that there's

  473. no

  474. condemnation

  475. for me?

  476. Look at

  477. the way

  478. I willingly

  479. sin once

  480. again.

  481. Beloved,

  482. if you're

  483. in Christ

  484. there is

  485. no

  486. condemnation

  487. for you.

  488. This is

  489. much of

  490. the Christian

  491. experience.

  492. This book

  493. is called

  494. The

  495. Pilgrim's

  496. Progress.

  497. And the

  498. main character

  499. in the book

  500. is not

  501. named

  502. Pilgrim.

  503. His name

  504. is Christian.

  505. John Bunyan

  506. meant for

  507. this to

  508. be understood

  509. as the

  510. typical

  511. experience

  512. of the

  513. Christian

  514. life.

  515. Maybe we

  516. don't get

  517. every bit

  518. and piece

  519. of it,

  520. but we

  521. pick up

  522. much of

  523. this

  524. across

  525. our

  526. life.

  527. I find

  528. myself

  529. in it

  530. more

  531. and more

  532. the

  533. longer

  534. I

  535. follow

  536. Jesus.

  537. So the

  538. short

  539. little bit

  540. I want

  541. to read

  542. to you,

  543. Christian

  544. has met

  545. a

  546. companion

  547. named

  548. Faithful.

  549. And

  550. Faithful

  551. is recounting

  552. the story

  553. of how

  554. he

  555. arrived

  556. at

  557. this

  558. spot

  559. on the

  560. journey

  561. along

  562. with

  563. Christian.

  564. And just

  565. before he

  566. has headed

  567. up a

  568. hill

  569. called

  570. Difficulty,

  571. he was

  572. tempted

  573. by

  574. Adam

  575. I.

  576. I should

  577. mention

  578. if you're

  579. unfamiliar

  580. with this,

  581. it's an

  582. allegory.

  583. He's

  584. tempted

  585. by Adam

  586. I.

  587. to go

  588. with him

  589. to the

  590. town

  591. of

  592. Deceit.

  593. And Faithful

  594. considers

  595. this

  596. for a

  597. time.

  598. And so

  599. he begins

  600. up the

  601. hill

  602. difficulty

  603. feeling

  604. the guilt

  605. of being

  606. tempted

  607. by Adam

  608. I,

  609. tempted

  610. by

  611. his

  612. flesh

  613. to go

  614. to this

  615. town

  616. of

  617. Deceit

  618. and to

  619. fill

  620. himself

  621. with the

  622. desires

  623. of this

  624. life.

  625. So

  626. he's

  627. headed up

  628. the hill

  629. difficulty

  630. and he

  631. says,

  632. now when

  633. I had

  634. climbed

  635. about

  636. halfway

  637. up,

  638. I

  639. looked

  640. behind

  641. and

  642. saw

  643. someone

  644. coming

  645. after

  646. me

  647. swift

  648. as

  649. the

  650. wind.

  651. Soon

  652. he

  653. overtook

  654. me

  655. just

  656. about

  657. the

  658. place

  659. where

  660. the

  661. arbor

  662. stands.

  663. That

  664. is the

  665. place,

  666. said

  667. Christian,

  668. where I

  669. sat

  670. down

  671. to

  672. rest,

  673. fell

  674. asleep,

  675. and

  676. lost

  677. my

  678. scroll.

  679. Christian

  680. lost

  681. the

  682. assurance

  683. of his

  684. faith

  685. by

  686. napping.

  687. Dear

  688. brother,

  689. hear me

  690. out,

  691. Faithful

  692. urged.

  693. So

  694. as soon

  695. as the

  696. man

  697. overtook

  698. me,

  699. without

  700. saying

  701. a

  702. word,

  703. he

  704. struck

  705. me

  706. and

  707. knocked

  708. me

  709. down

  710. unconscious.

  711. When I

  712. came to,

  713. I asked

  714. him why

  715. he had

  716. thus

  717. assaulted

  718. me.

  719. He

  720. said

  721. that it

  722. was

  723. because

  724. of my

  725. secret

  726. inclination

  727. to

  728. follow

  729. Adam

  730. the

  731. first,

  732. and

  733. with

  734. that

  735. he

  736. struck

  737. me

  738. with

  739. another

  740. deadly

  741. blow

  742. on the

  743. chest

  744. and

  745. beat

  746. me

  747. down

  748. backward,

  749. and

  750. I

  751. lay

  752. at

  753. his

  754. feet

  755. as

  756. if

  757. I

  758. were

  759. dead.

  760. So

  761. when

  762. I

  763. came

  764. to,

  765. I

  766. cried

  767. to

  768. him

  769. for

  770. mercy,

  771. but

  772. he

  773. said,

  774. I

  775. do

  776. not

  777. know

  778. how

  779. to

  780. show

  781. mercy,

  782. and

  783. with

  784. that

  785. knocked

  786. me

  787. down

  788. again.

  789. Now

  790. this

  791. figure

  792. is

  793. Moses

  794. beating

  795. him

  796. down

  797. with

  798. the

  799. law.

  800. Why?

  801. Because

  802. he

  803. had

  804. an

  805. inclination

  806. to

  807. Adam

  808. the

  809. first,

  810. and

  811. the

  812. law

  813. comes

  814. to

  815. bear

  816. witness

  817. of

  818. that

  819. transgression.

  820. But

  821. here

  822. he

  823. finds

  824. himself

  825. on

  826. the

  827. hill

  828. difficult,

  829. unable

  830. to

  831. get

  832. up,

  833. and

  834. maybe

  835. you

  836. find

  837. yourself

  838. in

  839. the

  840. shoes

  841. of

  842. faithful

  843. this

  844. morning.

  845. Listen

  846. to what

  847. Bunyan

  848. writes

  849. next.

  850. He

  851. would

  852. have

  853. beaten

  854. me

  855. to

  856. death,

  857. except

  858. one

  859. came

  860. by

  861. and

  862. told

  863. him

  864. to

  865. stop.

  866. Christian

  867. asked,

  868. who

  869. was it

  870. that

  871. told

  872. him

  873. to

  874. stop?

  875. Faithful

  876. went

  877. on,

  878. I

  879. did

  880. not

  881. recognize

  882. him

  883. at

  884. first,

  885. but

  886. as

  887. he

  888. went

  889. by,

  890. I

  891. saw

  892. the

  893. wounds

  894. in

  895. his

  896. hands

  897. and

  898. in

  899. his

  900. side.

  901. Then

  902. I

  903. concluded

  904. that

  905. he

  906. was

  907. our

  908. Lord.

  909. So

  910. I

  911. continued

  912. up

  913. the

  914. hill.

  915. The

  916. Lord

  917. Jesus

  918. Christ

  919. came

  920. by

  921. and

  922. said,

  923. stop.

  924. He

  925. said,

  926. mine

  927. of

  928. faithful,

  929. and the

  930. law

  931. stopped

  932. beating

  933. him

  934. down.

  935. Do

  936. you

  937. sometimes

  938. still

  939. feel

  940. the

  941. weight

  942. of

  943. a

  944. burden

  945. that

  946. has

  947. already

  948. been

  949. loosed

  950. from

  951. your

  952. back?

  953. Our

  954. Lord

  955. did not

  956. place

  957. that

  958. weight

  959. upon

  960. your

  961. shoulders.

  962. You

  963. did.

  964. You

  965. stopped

  966. believing

  967. that there's

  968. no

  969. condemnation

  970. for those

  971. who are

  972. in

  973. Christ

  974. Jesus.

  975. Listen

  976. to the

  977. words of

  978. Jesus

  979. in

  980. Matthew

    Matthew 11:28

  981. 11,

  982. verse

  983. 28 and

  984. 29,

  985. find some

  986. solace

  987. there

  988. where he

  989. says,

  990. come to

  991. me,

  992. all who

  993. labor

  994. and are

  995. heavy laden

  996. and I

  997. will give

  998. you

  999. rest.

  1000. Take

  1001. my yoke

  1002. upon you

  1003. and learn

  1004. from me

  1005. for I

  1006. am gentle

  1007. and lowly

  1008. in heart

  1009. and you

  1010. will find

  1011. rest

  1012. for your

  1013. souls.

  1014. Love

  1015. still

  1016. bids you

  1017. welcome,

  1018. dear

  1019. Christian.

  1020. Jesus

  1021. calls to

  1022. you

  1023. in your

  1024. failure,

  1025. come

  1026. to

  1027. me.

  1028. He

  1029. is

  1030. unendingly

  1031. gracious

  1032. and merciful

  1033. to those

  1034. who belong

  1035. to him.

  1036. Your

  1037. standing

  1038. with him

  1039. was

  1040. accomplished

  1041. by

  1042. him.

  1043. You

  1044. are

  1045. his

  1046. and he

  1047. will

  1048. not

  1049. cast

  1050. you

  1051. out.

  1052. There

  1053. is

  1054. therefore

  1055. now

  1056. no

  1057. condemnation

  1058. for those

  1059. who are

  1060. in Christ

  1061. Jesus.

  1062. Not

  1063. there is

  1064. therefore

  1065. now

  1066. no

  1067. condemnation

  1068. for those

  1069. who feel

  1070. like

  1071. there is

  1072. therefore

  1073. now

  1074. no

  1075. condemnation.

  1076. Charles

  1077. Spurgeon

  1078. once said,

  1079. this is the

  1080. quotation on the

  1081. back of your

  1082. bulletin,

  1083. my hope

  1084. that I

  1085. am saved

  1086. does not

  1087. lie in

  1088. the fact

  1089. that I

  1090. preach

  1091. or that

  1092. I do

  1093. this or

  1094. that.

  1095. All

  1096. my hope

  1097. lies

  1098. in

  1099. this,

  1100. that Jesus

  1101. Christ

  1102. came to

  1103. save

  1104. sinners.

  1105. I

  1106. am

  1107. a

  1108. sinner.

  1109. I

  1110. trust

  1111. him.

  1112. Then

  1113. he

  1114. came

  1115. to

  1116. save

  1117. me

  1118. and

  1119. I

  1120. am

  1121. saved.

  1122. In

  1123. Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1124. chapter

  1125. 12

  1126. and

  1127. verse

  1128. 2,

  1129. Paul

  1130. tells

  1131. us

  1132. that

  1133. we

  1134. are

  1135. to

  1136. be

  1137. transformed

  1138. by

  1139. the

  1140. renewal

  1141. of

  1142. our

  1143. minds.

  1144. Beloved,

  1145. by the

  1146. renewal

  1147. of our

  1148. minds,

  1149. not

  1150. our

  1151. emotions.

  1152. I

  1153. think we

  1154. live in

  1155. a day,

  1156. perhaps,

  1157. more than

  1158. any other

  1159. day,

  1160. although I've

  1161. never lived

  1162. in the

  1163. others,

  1164. that emotions

  1165. lead the

  1166. charge.

  1167. We are

  1168. such a

  1169. people

  1170. batted

  1171. around by

  1172. the way

  1173. we

  1174. feel.

  1175. Perhaps

  1176. because it's

  1177. difficult to

  1178. know what

  1179. the truth

  1180. is as

  1181. we walk

  1182. in such

  1183. a

  1184. confused

  1185. world.

  1186. We have

  1187. an

  1188. absolute

  1189. word.

  1190. a

  1191. clear

  1192. text

  1193. that

  1194. tells

  1195. us

  1196. what

  1197. the

  1198. truth

  1199. is

  1200. as

  1201. it

  1202. concerns

  1203. the

  1204. most

  1205. important

  1206. things.

  1207. Do not

  1208. let your

  1209. feelings

  1210. lead the

  1211. charge

  1212. and try

  1213. to get

  1214. the

  1215. truth

  1216. to

  1217. catch

  1218. up

  1219. to

  1220. your

  1221. feelings.

  1222. Rather,

  1223. let your

  1224. feelings

  1225. catch

  1226. up

  1227. to

  1228. the

  1229. truth.

  1230. We're

  1231. to be

  1232. transformed

  1233. by the

  1234. renewal

  1235. of

  1236. our

  1237. minds.

  1238. So

  1239. repeat

  1240. it

  1241. until

  1242. you

  1243. believe

  1244. it.

  1245. There's

  1246. therefore

  1247. now no

  1248. condemnation

  1249. for those

  1250. who are

  1251. in

  1252. Christ

  1253. Jesus.

  1254. There's

  1255. therefore

  1256. now no

  1257. condemnation

  1258. for those

  1259. who are

  1260. in

  1261. Christ

  1262. Jesus.

  1263. No

  1264. condemnation,

  1265. no

  1266. condemnation,

  1267. no

  1268. condemnation.

  1269. We've

  1270. been set

  1271. free

  1272. from it.

  1273. Stop

  1274. carrying it

  1275. around like

  1276. a burden

  1277. on your

  1278. back when

  1279. the burden

  1280. has

  1281. been

  1282. taken.

  1283. You

  1284. didn't do

  1285. it.

  1286. Praise

  1287. God,

  1288. you can't

  1289. undo it.

  1290. the Lord

  1291. has

  1292. done

  1293. it

  1294. for the

  1295. glory

  1296. of his

  1297. grace

  1298. to be

  1299. expressed

  1300. to us.

  1301. What an

  1302. incredible

  1303. thing.

  1304. And we

  1305. walk around

  1306. beating

  1307. ourselves

  1308. down

  1309. as if

  1310. we've

  1311. not

  1312. been

  1313. set

  1314. free

  1315. from

  1316. the

  1317. condemnation

  1318. that

  1319. comes

  1320. with

  1321. sin.

  1322. I

  1323. want

  1324. to

  1325. ask

  1326. and

  1327. answer

  1328. two

  1329. questions

  1330. about

  1331. verse

  1332. one

  1333. that

  1334. find

  1335. their

  1336. answers

  1337. in

  1338. verses

  1339. two

  1340. through

  1341. four.

  1342. But as

  1343. I look

  1344. at the

  1345. time,

  1346. yeah,

  1347. I want

  1348. to ask

  1349. and answer

  1350. them at

  1351. length

  1352. next week.

  1353. When you

  1354. make the

  1355. preaching

  1356. schedule,

  1357. you get a

  1358. little bit

  1359. of liberty

  1360. to do

  1361. this.

  1362. But let's

  1363. consider them

  1364. briefly

  1365. before I

  1366. close.

  1367. Maybe

  1368. good just

  1369. to set

  1370. our minds

  1371. on no

  1372. condemnation.

  1373. Let me

  1374. ask them

  1375. and answer

  1376. them briefly.

  1377. Number

  1378. one,

  1379. how is

  1380. there

  1381. therefore

  1382. now

  1383. no

  1384. condemnation?

  1385. Paul has

  1386. been making

  1387. this argument

  1388. to us

  1389. across the

  1390. entirety

  1391. of the

  1392. letter,

  1393. but he

  1394. sums it

  1395. up for

  1396. us in

  1397. verses

  1398. two

  1399. and

  1400. three.

  1401. Because

  1402. if you

  1403. are in

  1404. Christ

  1405. Jesus,

  1406. you have

  1407. been

  1408. justified.

  1409. This

  1410. word is

  1411. so

  1412. important.

  1413. Justification

  1414. is a

  1415. legal

  1416. declaration

  1417. that your

  1418. sins

  1419. have been

  1420. forgiven

  1421. and that

  1422. you have

  1423. perfectly

  1424. kept

  1425. the law.

  1426. The

  1427. Mosaic

  1428. Covenant

  1429. requires

  1430. this of

  1431. us.

  1432. If we're

  1433. to be

  1434. God's

  1435. people,

  1436. we have

  1437. to be

  1438. perfect

  1439. law

  1440. keepers.

  1441. And we

  1442. haven't.

  1443. We have

  1444. failed at

  1445. this.

  1446. We deserve

  1447. the punishment

  1448. of our

  1449. sin.

  1450. That debt

  1451. has to be

  1452. canceled.

  1453. But not

  1454. just that,

  1455. we also

  1456. have to be

  1457. perfect

  1458. law

  1459. keepers.

  1460. And so

  1461. we get

  1462. both

  1463. from

  1464. Christ.

  1465. It's the

  1466. doctrine of

  1467. double

  1468. imputation.

  1469. We'll talk

  1470. about it

  1471. at length.

  1472. next week.

  1473. Our sin

  1474. taken

  1475. by Him,

  1476. given to

  1477. Him,

  1478. and His

  1479. righteousness

  1480. given

  1481. to us.

  1482. So briefly

  1483. see that

  1484. in verses

  1485. 2 and

  1486. 3.

  1487. The law

  1488. of the

  1489. spirit

  1490. of life

  1491. has set

  1492. you free

  1493. in Christ

  1494. Jesus

  1495. from the

  1496. law of

  1497. sin

  1498. and death.

  1499. For God

  1500. has done

  1501. what the

  1502. law,

  1503. weakened

  1504. by the

  1505. flesh,

  1506. could not

  1507. do.

  1508. We could

  1509. not keep

  1510. the law

  1511. in our

  1512. sinful

  1513. flesh

  1514. flesh.

  1515. By

  1516. sending

  1517. His

  1518. own

  1519. Son

  1520. in the

  1521. likeness

  1522. of

  1523. sinful

  1524. flesh

  1525. and for

  1526. sin,

  1527. He

  1528. condemned

  1529. sin

  1530. in

  1531. the

  1532. flesh.

  1533. Whose

  1534. flesh?

  1535. In

  1536. Christ's

  1537. flesh

  1538. on our

  1539. behalf.

  1540. So you

  1541. see,

  1542. Jesus'

  1543. perfect

  1544. law

  1545. keeping

  1546. and His

  1547. taking

  1548. of our

  1549. condemnation

  1550. there in

  1551. the text.

  1552. Christ's

  1553. Christ's

  1554. But also

  1555. we should

  1556. ask,

  1557. why

  1558. have

  1559. you been

  1560. set

  1561. free

  1562. in

  1563. Christ

  1564. Jesus?

  1565. So that

  1566. we might

  1567. be

  1568. sanctified.

  1569. Another

  1570. important

  1571. term.

  1572. Sanctification

  1573. is the

  1574. growing

  1575. process

  1576. of becoming

  1577. holy.

  1578. When we're

  1579. declared

  1580. righteous,

  1581. this is

  1582. an eternal

  1583. state in

  1584. which we

  1585. stand.

  1586. It's a

  1587. positional

  1588. thing,

  1589. but then

  1590. we are

  1591. in this

  1592. life

  1593. sanctified.

  1594. Bit

  1595. by bit,

  1596. one

  1597. degree of

  1598. glory to

  1599. another,

  1600. Paul says.

  1601. We grow

  1602. in holiness.

  1603. Justification

  1604. necessarily

  1605. leads to

  1606. sanctification,

  1607. and much of

  1608. the rest of

  1609. this chapter

  1610. is about

  1611. that.

  1612. How do

  1613. we do

  1614. that?

  1615. Well,

  1616. we live

  1617. life by

  1618. the Spirit.

  1619. We're

  1620. empowered

  1621. by Him

  1622. to keep

  1623. God's

  1624. law.

  1625. Always

  1626. starting with

  1627. the fact

  1628. that we're

  1629. no longer

  1630. condemned

  1631. in Christ,

  1632. we're now

  1633. set free

  1634. to be

  1635. obedient

  1636. by the

  1637. power.

  1638. of the

  1639. Spirit.

  1640. Two

  1641. wonderful

  1642. things.

  1643. We will

  1644. take up

  1645. both of

  1646. these

  1647. questions

  1648. and we'll

  1649. answer them

  1650. in depth

  1651. next week

  1652. as we

  1653. continue

  1654. to study

  1655. together.

  1656. So,

  1657. we just

  1658. skipped

  1659. four pages

  1660. of notes.

  1661. We bring

  1662. you back

  1663. to verse

  1664. one.

  1665. I hope

  1666. it just

  1667. resonates

  1668. around

  1669. inside of

  1670. you

  1671. this morning.

  1672. Christian

  1673. brothers and

  1674. sisters,

  1675. almost all

  1676. of the

  1677. counseling

  1678. I do

  1679. is found

  1680. in verse

  1681. one.

  1682. We come

  1683. at it

  1684. from many

  1685. other places.

  1686. There's

  1687. practical

  1688. applications

  1689. to be

  1690. done,

  1691. but oh,

  1692. if we

  1693. would just

  1694. believe

  1695. that there

  1696. is therefore

  1697. now no

  1698. condemnation

  1699. for those

  1700. who are

  1701. in

  1702. Christ

  1703. Jesus.

  1704. Let's

  1705. pray

  1706. together.
