  1. Well, good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  2. All right. Our text for this morning is Romans chapter 8, verses 18 through 27.

    Romans 8:18–27

  3. Before we set our minds on today's text, and do bear with me for a moment,

  4. I want us to first take a look back at verses 16 and 17,

  5. and consider particularly the phrase in the last half of verse 17.

  6. There Paul writes,

  7. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  8. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

  9. Now, here is the phrase that we need to be clear about before proceeding further in the chapter.

  10. Provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

  11. Now, last week we altogether neglected that half of that verse and spent little to no time on it at all.

  12. But here Paul says that if we are children of God, we are co-heirs bound for glory, and we will suffer.

  13. Now, the Christian ought not be surprised by this,

  14. although we live in an age that often teaches contrary to it.

  15. Beloved, we are followers of Jesus Christ.

  16. We walk the path that He walked.

  17. Jesus states the matter plainly in John chapter 15, verse 18 and following,

    John 15:18

  18. where He said,

  19. If the world hates you,

  20. know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  21. And you may want to qualify that.

  22. He said,

  23. If the world hates you,

  24. but He goes on,

  25. If you were of the world,

  26. the world would love you as its own,

  27. but because you are not of the world,

  28. but I chose you out of the world,

  29. therefore the world hates you.

  30. Remember the word I said to you,

  31. A servant is not greater than his master.

  32. If they persecuted me,

  33. they will also persecute you.

  34. If they kept my word,

  35. they will also keep yours.

  36. Paul says it this way in 2 Timothy chapter 3 and verse 12.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  37. Indeed,

  38. all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus

  39. will be persecuted.

  40. Jesus came to suffer that we might be saved and then to be glorified.

  41. Peter tells us in 1 Peter chapter 1, verse 10 and 11,

    1 Peter 1:10

  42. concerning this salvation.

  43. The prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours

  44. searched and inquired carefully,

  45. inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating

  46. when he predicted the sufferings of Christ

  47. and the subsequent glories.

  48. Christ came to suffer that we might be saved and to be glorified.

  49. John Murray once said,

  50. There is no sharing in Christ's glory unless there is sharing in his sufferings.

  51. Sufferings and then glory was the order appointed for Christ himself.

  52. It could not be otherwise in terms of his messianic undertaking and design.

  53. The same order applies to those who are heirs with him.

  54. End quote.

  55. Provided we suffer with him,

  56. most certainly includes persecution.

  57. But I also think it includes all of the unpleasantry of living in a fallen world.

  58. We are on the heels of Paul's expressed anguish over his battle with his flesh.

  59. We experience the same,

  60. longing to be finally delivered from these bodies.

  61. If you don't experience that,

  62. if you don't desire to be fully set free from sin in your life,

  63. I just wonder if perhaps you're a Christian at all.

  64. Christians have the spirit of Christ and desire to live like Christ.

  65. We are daily bombarded with the tragedy of others' sin.

  66. This world is in an absolutely desperate state.

  67. We will see in today's text that all of the creation exists under the curse.

  68. So, every ache and pain,

  69. every sniffle, cough and fever,

  70. every life lost too soon,

  71. every weed pulled from a garden,

  72. every day that's too cold or day that's too hot,

  73. we also suffer these things.

  74. Living in a place that's not as it should be.

  75. I believe that Christians ought to be all at once the saddest people on earth,

  76. for we see the brokenness of it.

  77. I find as I grow in Christlikeness,

  78. I am sadder about the state of the place in which I live,

  79. but also, at the same time,

  80. we should be the happiest people on earth.

  81. For we have a promise,

  82. made by the one who can keep that promise,

  83. that it will all one day be made right.

  84. So, I hope as you mature in Christ,

  85. both your sadness for the state of the world

  86. and your happiness for the surety of the promise grow together.

  87. So, it's that suffering as well.

  88. It's the persecution to be sure and clear,

  89. but it's everything that comes with living in a world

  90. in such desperate brokenness.

  91. The prophet Isaiah says of this promise keeper,

  92. one, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  93. in Isaiah chapter 53, verse 3 and 4,

    Isaiah 53:3

  94. He was despised and rejected by men,

  95. a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

  96. And as one from whom men hide their faces,

  97. he was despised and we esteemed him not.

  98. Certainly, there's persecution seen there.

  99. Verse 4,

  100. Surely, he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  101. Yet we esteemed him stricken,

  102. smitten by God and afflicted.

  103. Jesus suffered.

  104. He suffered rejection.

  105. He suffered bodily.

  106. He suffered the cursed creation.

  107. But he was glorified.

  108. May we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

  109. So now, with all of this in mind,

  110. there's this tension built there in which we live.

  111. Let's read and study today's text.

  112. So Romans chapter 8, verse 18 through 27.

    Romans 8:18–27

  113. Before I read it, I'd like to remind you, beloved,

  114. that this is God's word to us.

  115. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  116. And so we would all do well to listen to it

  117. in order to believe its promises

  118. and to obey its commands.

  119. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time

  120. are not worth comparing with the glory

  121. that is to be revealed to us.

  122. For the creation waits with eager longing

  123. for the revealing of the sons of God.

  124. For the creation was subjected to futility,

  125. not willingly, but because of him who subjected it,

  126. in hope that the creation itself will be set free

  127. from its bondage to corruption

  128. and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

  129. For we know that the whole creation

  130. has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

  131. And not only the creation,

  132. but we ourselves,

  133. who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,

  134. groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons,

  135. the redemption of our bodies.

  136. For in this hope we were saved.

  137. Now hope that is seen is not hope.

  138. For who hopes for what he sees?

  139. But if we hope for what we do not see,

  140. we wait for it with patience.

  141. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  142. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought,

  143. but the Spirit himself intercedes for us

  144. with groanings too deep for words.

  145. And he who searches hearts

  146. knows what is the mind of the Spirit,

  147. because the Spirit intercedes for the saints

  148. according to the will of God.

  149. Now, he begins, right,

  150. again doing this for,

  151. building an argument for,

  152. I consider that the sufferings of this present time

  153. are not worth comparing with the glory

  154. that is to be revealed to us.

  155. Many commentators,

  156. I've got just a stack of commentaries on Romans,

  157. and many of them suggest that in verse 18,

  158. Paul places the suffering of this present time

  159. on one side of a scale,

  160. and the glory that is to be revealed to us

  161. on the other side of the scale,

  162. to find that that scale tips dramatically

  163. for the latter.

  164. And their point stands.

  165. They're not wrong in saying it,

  166. but I want to suggest that even further,

  167. even higher than that,

  168. that what Paul is stating

  169. is that it isn't even worth the effort

  170. of going through the exercise.

  171. He's saying so clearly

  172. you need not set these things on a scale.

  173. The glory that is to be revealed to us

  174. so vastly outweighs

  175. the sufferings of this present time

  176. that they are not worth comparing.

  177. Don't take any of our time

  178. to even consider which one

  179. has more weightiness.

  180. The weight of glory

  181. is much, much heavier.

  182. This word glory means

  183. splendor and honor.

  184. God deserves glory.

  185. God is glorious,

  186. and he bestows glory on his people.

  187. It is the bright hope that awaits us

  188. as we walk the din of this world.

  189. John MacArthur,

  190. in his commentary on this text,

  191. says,

  192. As followers of Christ,

  193. our sufferings come from men.

  194. Whereas our glory comes from God.

  195. Our suffering is earthly,

  196. whereas our glory is heavenly.

  197. Our suffering is short,

  198. whereas our glory is forever.

  199. Our suffering is trivial,

  200. whereas our glory is limitless.

  201. Our suffering is in our mortal

  202. and corrupted bodies,

  203. whereas our glory will be

  204. in our perfected

  205. and imperishable bodies.

  206. End quote.

  207. And so,

  208. we await this future state.

  209. The price is small,

  210. and the reward is grand.

  211. But it doesn't always feel that way,

  212. does it?

  213. We so long to see its fruition

  214. that our days often feel incredibly long.

  215. We join with John

  216. as he records the words of Jesus

  217. in Revelation chapter 22 and verse 20.

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  218. Surely I am coming soon.

  219. And we reply with him,

  220. Amen.

  221. Come, Lord Jesus.

  222. If you are a Christ follower

  223. and you have not had one of those days,

  224. they are coming.

  225. You would just be happy

  226. for the Lord to part the skies

  227. and come back now.

  228. And we are not the only ones

  229. awaiting this glorious day

  230. of our glorification.

  231. Note with me,

  232. in today's text,

  233. a uniting word.

  234. In verse 22,

  235. you see the word groaning.

  236. In verse 23,

  237. groan.

  238. And in verse 26,

  239. groanings.

  240. All the same root Greek word.

  241. Which brings us to our simple outline

  242. for the rest of our time together.

  243. Number one,

  244. the creation groans for glory.

  245. Number two,

  246. Christians groan for glory.

  247. And number three,

  248. the Spirit groans for glory.

  249. So firstly,

  250. in verses 19 through 22,

  251. the creation groans for glory.

  252. Let me read it again

  253. so it's fresh in our minds.

  254. For the creation,

  255. this is verse 19,

  256. waits with eager longing

  257. for the revealing

  258. of the sons of God.

  259. For the creation was subjected

  260. to futility,

  261. not willingly,

  262. but because of him

  263. who subjected it,

  264. in hope that the creation itself

  265. would be set free

  266. from its bondage to corruption

  267. and obtain the freedom

  268. of the glory

  269. of the children of God.

  270. For we know that the whole creation

  271. has been groaning together

  272. in the pains of childbirth

  273. until now.

  274. God is the only thing

  275. not created.

  276. Therefore,

  277. we must think for a moment

  278. about what created things

  279. Paul is referring to.

  280. He does not mean

  281. the heavenly host,

  282. for they are not

  283. part of the curse.

  284. Neither does he mean

  285. the fallen angels,

  286. for they do not desire good

  287. and their condemnation

  288. is final.

  289. He isn't referring

  290. to Christ followers

  291. as he will mention them

  292. separately

  293. in the following verses.

  294. And he can't be referring

  295. to unbelievers

  296. because they also

  297. do not desire good.

  298. So,

  299. what's left over?

  300. Paul here is speaking

  301. of the non-rational part

  302. of God's creation.

  303. Plants and animals,

  304. soil and seas.

  305. What we would look out

  306. and perhaps call nature.

  307. And what Paul does with it

  308. is he personifies it,

  309. which is a practice

  310. that's not foreign

  311. to the scripture.

  312. We see it

  313. waiting eagerly,

  314. longing for something

  315. to come to pass,

  316. groaning in the pains

  317. of childbirth.

  318. And he's simply

  319. giving us a picture

  320. of what the whole world

  321. is desiring to see

  322. come to be.

  323. So again,

  324. this personification

  325. of nature happens

  326. and let me just show you

  327. one other example

  328. from Isaiah 55

  329. and verse 12

  330. where Isaiah writes,

  331. for you shall go out

  332. in joy and be led forth

  333. in peace.

  334. The mountains

  335. and the hills

  336. before you

  337. shall break forth

  338. into singing

  339. and all the trees

  340. of the field

  341. shall clap their hands.

  342. And if your mind

  343. just broke into song

  344. then you are

  345. of my generation.

  346. So,

  347. this personified nature,

  348. Paul says,

  349. waits with eager longing

  350. for our glorification.

  351. And the idea

  352. of waiting

  353. with eager longing

  354. in Greek

  355. is like a person

  356. standing on their tiptoes

  357. leaning forward

  358. with great expectation.

  359. This is the picture

  360. that we have here.

  361. Leaning forward

  362. for this arrival

  363. of some long-awaited

  364. wonderful event.

  365. This is what this

  366. eager longing

  367. looks like

  368. in the Greek.

  369. The creation

  370. awaits this event.

  371. Our glory,

  372. the revealing

  373. of the sons of God

  374. because it was

  375. subjected

  376. to futility.

  377. Right?

  378. And Paul,

  379. it's clear

  380. it didn't choose

  381. the futility.

  382. Right?

  383. God subjected it

  384. to futility.

  385. Right?

  386. And we can read

  387. about when this

  388. happens in

  389. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:17–19

  390. verse 17

  391. through 19

  392. as it's tied up

  393. in Adam's

  394. curse.

  395. God there says

  396. to Adam,

  397. because you have

  398. listened to the voice

  399. of your wife

  400. and have eaten

  401. of the tree

  402. of which I commanded you.

  403. You shall not eat of it.

  404. Cursed is the ground

  405. because of you.

  406. In pain you shall eat of it

  407. all the days

  408. of your life.

  409. Thorns and thistles

  410. it shall bring forth

  411. for you

  412. and you shall eat

  413. the plants of the field.

  414. By the sweat of your face

  415. you shall eat bread

  416. till you return

  417. to the ground

  418. for out of it

  419. you were taken

  420. for you are dust

  421. and to dust

  422. you shall return.

  423. Right?

  424. The creation itself.

  425. Right?

  426. It was plentiful.

  427. It was paradise

  428. before the fall.

  429. Right?

  430. The creation worked

  431. exactly as the creation

  432. was meant to work.

  433. But because of the sin of man

  434. it was subjected to

  435. this futility

  436. that we presently live in.

  437. And to be clear

  438. we have remnants

  439. of God's wonderful

  440. created work.

  441. Right?

  442. We live in a particularly

  443. beautiful place

  444. to stand in awe

  445. of our creator

  446. God.

  447. If you begin to get down

  448. into the mess of it

  449. it's messy out there.

  450. It's not functioning

  451. quite like

  452. it was designed

  453. to function.

  454. Paul says that

  455. that creation

  456. desires the day

  457. when all things

  458. will be made new.

  459. Now I want to read to you

  460. a quote

  461. from Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  462. Interestingly

  463. out of MacArthur's

  464. commentary on this

  465. because I couldn't find it

  466. in the Lloyd-Jones

  467. commentary.

  468. I looked and looked

  469. and looked

  470. and I said

  471. I think MacArthur

  472. quoted him.

  473. So this is MacArthur

  474. quoting Lloyd-Jones

  475. and he muses

  476. I think

  477. rather insightfully

  478. about this idea

  479. of the creation

  480. groaning

  481. and longing

  482. for this to happen.

  483. So listen to this

  484. quote

  485. I wonder

  486. whether the phenomenon

  487. of the spring

  488. supplies us

  489. with a part answer.

  490. Nature

  491. every year

  492. as it were

  493. makes an effort

  494. to renew itself

  495. to produce

  496. something permanent.

  497. it has come out

  498. of the death

  499. and the darkness

  500. of all that is

  501. so true

  502. of the winter.

  503. In the spring

  504. it seems to be

  505. trying to produce

  506. a perfect creation

  507. to be going through

  508. some kind of birth pangs

  509. year by year

  510. but unfortunately

  511. it does not succeed

  512. for spring

  513. leads only to summer

  514. whereas summer

  515. leads to autumn

  516. and autumn

  517. to winter.

  518. Poor old nature

  519. tries every year

  520. to defeat the vanity

  521. the principle

  522. of death

  523. and decay

  524. and disintegration

  525. that is in it

  526. but it cannot do so.

  527. It fails

  528. every time.

  529. It still goes on

  530. trying as if it

  531. feels things

  532. should be different

  533. and better

  534. but it never succeeds.

  535. So it goes on

  536. groaning

  537. and travailing

  538. in pain

  539. together

  540. until now.

  541. It has been doing so

  542. for a very long time

  543. but nature

  544. still repeats

  545. the effort

  546. annually.

  547. Maybe

  548. now the seasons

  549. will serve us

  550. in that way

  551. to think about

  552. how nature

  553. itself

  554. is awaiting

  555. our glory.

  556. Now Paul doesn't

  557. detail for us

  558. how creation

  559. itself will be

  560. set free

  561. from its bondage

  562. to corruption

  563. and obtain

  564. the freedom

  565. of the glory

  566. of the children

  567. of God

  568. and we get

  569. some clues

  570. to that

  571. in other places

  572. in the New Testament

  573. but he doesn't do so

  574. because this really

  575. isn't his

  576. driving point.

  577. His point

  578. is that

  579. even the creation

  580. awaits

  581. the same

  582. restoration

  583. that we

  584. await.

  585. We are in good

  586. company

  587. because the creation

  588. groans

  589. for our glory.

  590. So secondly

  591. Christians

  592. groan

  593. for glory

  594. and we see this

  595. in verse 23,

  596. 24

  597. and 25.

  598. There Paul says

  599. and not only

  600. the creation

  601. but we ourselves

  602. who have the first

  603. fruits of the spirit

  604. groan inwardly

  605. as we wait eagerly

  606. for adoption

  607. as sons

  608. the redemption

  609. of our bodies.

  610. For in this hope

  611. we were saved.

  612. Now hope that is seen

  613. is not hope

  614. for who hopes

  615. for what he sees?

  616. But if we hope

  617. for what we do not see

  618. we wait for it

  619. with patience.

  620. Christians

  621. groan

  622. for glory.

  623. Those who have

  624. the first fruits

  625. of the spirit

  626. which

  627. I take to mean

  628. that the ongoing

  629. work of the spirit

  630. to lead believers

  631. in holiness

  632. is but a shadow

  633. of the greater reality

  634. that waits us.

  635. So hear me again.

  636. If you don't have

  637. a longing

  638. in your heart

  639. to turn from

  640. the things of the world

  641. and turn to the things

  642. of God

  643. which waxes

  644. and wanes

  645. it's never perfect

  646. it doesn't maintain

  647. a certain dial

  648. and never gets dialed down

  649. and never gets dialed up

  650. but generally speaking

  651. if you don't desire

  652. to put off

  653. the old self

  654. and put on

  655. the new

  656. you may not

  657. have the spirit.

  658. This is the work

  659. the primary work

  660. of the spirit

  661. in your life

  662. is to lead you

  663. in holiness.

  664. And if you're concerned

  665. about that this morning

  666. my call to you

  667. is simply to

  668. repent

  669. and believe.

  670. Turn from your sin

  671. and place your faith

  672. in Christ.

  673. That the gift

  674. of the spirit

  675. might be given to you

  676. that you would want

  677. to walk

  678. in his ways.

  679. Our conviction

  680. of sin

  681. seeing the ravages

  682. of sin

  683. in the lives

  684. of others

  685. our recognition

  686. that the whole

  687. of the world

  688. is under

  689. the curse

  690. is evidence

  691. that we have become

  692. spiritually sensitive

  693. to the state

  694. of things

  695. so we also

  696. along with

  697. the creation

  698. we groan.

  699. when you see

  700. another tragedy

  701. and it is difficult

  702. to avoid

  703. isn't it?

  704. The tragedy

  705. itself

  706. is tragic

  707. but the greater

  708. thing

  709. is that the whole

  710. world

  711. is under

  712. this

  713. curse

  714. and it should

  715. cause us

  716. such grief

  717. and then such

  718. desire

  719. to go

  720. and preach

  721. the good news

  722. of Jesus Christ

  723. as he's

  724. building his

  725. kingdom

  726. even

  727. now.

  728. So we groan

  729. when we see

  730. these things

  731. and I recognize

  732. that I have

  733. yet to carefully

  734. define this word

  735. that ties

  736. our text

  737. together

  738. although

  739. I think you

  740. likely

  741. get the idea.

  742. This is one of those

  743. places that the

  744. Greek word

  745. you read it

  746. and you go

  747. oh yeah

  748. that's really

  749. what I had in mind

  750. when I thought

  751. of groaning.

  752. But groaning

  753. means to

  754. vocally indicate

  755. pain

  756. or discomfort

  757. or displeasure

  758. and is used

  759. in Greek

  760. almost always

  761. in reference

  762. to

  763. inarticulate

  764. vocalization.

  765. So it's not

  766. a careful

  767. argument

  768. that you feel

  769. pain

  770. or discomfort

  771. or displeasure

  772. it's a

  773. noise

  774. that communicates

  775. that very thing.

  776. We have

  777. all groaned

  778. about something

  779. in our lives.

  780. But here

  781. in verse 23

  782. Paul says

  783. that we groan

  784. inwardly

  785. to be sure

  786. we probably

  787. also groan

  788. outwardly

  789. but here

  790. he's talking

  791. about

  792. an inward

  793. growing

  794. and I think

  795. he means to

  796. tie this

  797. to this idea

  798. of it being

  799. of the first

  800. fruits of the

  801. spirit

  802. that inside

  803. of us

  804. we are

  805. discontented

  806. with the state

  807. of the world

  808. in which we live

  809. and with

  810. ourselves.

  811. I think he's

  812. referring to that

  813. feeling of angst

  814. we often feel

  815. as Christians.

  816. It is a groaning

  817. that I hope

  818. that you have

  819. experienced

  820. a spirit

  821. wrought

  822. emotion

  823. that this

  824. world is

  825. not as

  826. it should

  827. be

  828. and perhaps

  829. the realization

  830. that you are

  831. part of the

  832. problem

  833. and I hope

  834. that it is

  835. accomplished

  836. accompanied

  837. excuse me

  838. by a spirit

  839. wrought

  840. eagerness

  841. for adoption

  842. as sons

  843. the redemption

  844. of our bodies.

  845. Last week

  846. we saw in

  847. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  848. 8 and

  849. verse 15

  850. there Paul

  851. says

  852. for you

  853. did not

  854. receive the

  855. spirit of

  856. slavery

  857. to fall

  858. back

  859. into fear

  860. but you

  861. have

  862. received

  863. the spirit

  864. of adoption

  865. as sons

  866. by whom

  867. we cry

  868. Abba

  869. Father.

  870. So in

  871. verse 15

  872. we have

  873. the statement

  874. of an

  875. accomplished

  876. work.

  877. You have

  878. received

  879. the spirit

  880. of adoption

  881. as sons.

  882. You have

  883. been

  884. adopted.

  885. Here in

  886. verse 23

  887. we see the

  888. eager expectation

  889. of the task

  890. being

  891. accomplished.

  892. So an

  893. accomplished

  894. task

  895. that we're

  896. desiring

  897. to see

  898. be accomplished.

  899. The already

  900. and the

  901. not yet

  902. and this

  903. is the gap

  904. in which

  905. we live.

  906. We have

  907. been adopted

  908. and yet

  909. the full

  910. realization

  911. awaits us.

  912. Paul clarifies

  913. this with the

  914. phrase

  915. the redemption

  916. of our

  917. bodies.

  918. We're

  919. awaiting

  920. this

  921. adoption

  922. of

  923. sons,

  924. the

  925. redemption

  926. of our

  927. bodies.

  928. Bodies

  929. is a

  930. reference

  931. to all

  932. of our

  933. fallen

  934. humanness

  935. that remains

  936. with us.

  937. We

  938. experience

  939. the

  940. weightiness

  941. of this

  942. each and

  943. every day.

  944. This is

  945. where Paul

  946. finds himself

  947. leading into

  948. this argument.

  949. You may

  950. recall

  951. Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  952. chapter 7

  953. in verse

  954. 24

  955. after he's

  956. talked about

  957. this wrestling

  958. to do the

  959. thing that he

  960. desires to do

  961. and yet not

  962. doing the

  963. thing that he

  964. desires to

  965. do.

  966. He says

  967. in verse

  968. 24,

  969. Wretched

  970. man that

  971. I am,

  972. who will

  973. deliver me

  974. from this

  975. body of

  976. death?

  977. He says

  978. who?

  979. Jesus

  980. Christ

  981. our Lord.

  982. Romans

  983. 8.1

  984. There is

  985. therefore

  986. now no

  987. condemnation

  988. for those

  989. who are

  990. in Christ

  991. Jesus.

  992. Praise

  993. be to

  994. God

  995. for his

  996. saving

  997. work in

  998. our

  999. lives

  1000. because

  1001. we're

  1002. not

  1003. perfect.

  1004. Set

  1005. free

  1006. from the

  1007. power of

  1008. sin and

  1009. yet we

  1010. still

  1011. sin.

  1012. Desiring

  1013. not to

  1014. sin,

  1015. yet we

  1016. still

  1017. sin.

  1018. Wretched

  1019. man that

  1020. I am,

  1021. praise be

  1022. to God

  1023. that Christ

  1024. will

  1025. deliver me,

  1026. has,

  1027. and will

  1028. finish

  1029. the work.

  1030. And so

  1031. we ebb

  1032. and we

  1033. flow in

  1034. our

  1035. Christian

  1036. experience

  1037. and perhaps

  1038. you have

  1039. at times

  1040. wondered

  1041. as you

  1042. took stock

  1043. of your

  1044. life,

  1045. am I

  1046. a Christian

  1047. at all?

  1048. Perhaps

  1049. you felt

  1050. like giving

  1051. up and

  1052. not following

  1053. Christ

  1054. any longer

  1055. and I

  1056. hope

  1057. that he's

  1058. kept you,

  1059. that he's

  1060. held you

  1061. because you

  1062. are his,

  1063. that when

  1064. you feel

  1065. like you're

  1066. faltering,

  1067. you recognize

  1068. that he

  1069. never

  1070. will.

  1071. Another

  1072. quotation

  1073. for you,

  1074. this is

  1075. Thomas Watson

  1076. who's a

  1077. Puritan

  1078. pastor.

  1079. If my

  1080. memory serves

  1081. me well,

  1082. it should

  1083. because it

  1084. only happened

  1085. this week,

  1086. the kids

  1087. coloring sheets

  1088. has a little

  1089. drawing of

  1090. Thomas Watson

  1091. on the back

  1092. of it

  1093. this morning.

  1094. Not by

  1095. plan at

  1096. all.

  1097. He once

  1098. said this,

  1099. quote,

  1100. the godly

  1101. may act

  1102. faintly

  1103. in religion.

  1104. The pulse

  1105. of their

  1106. affections

  1107. may beat

  1108. low.

  1109. The exercise

  1110. of grace

  1111. may be

  1112. hindered

  1113. as when

  1114. the course

  1115. of water

  1116. is stopped.

  1117. Instead

  1118. of grace

  1119. working in

  1120. the godly,

  1121. corruption

  1122. may work.

  1123. Instead

  1124. of patience,

  1125. murmuring.

  1126. Instead

  1127. of heavenliness,

  1128. earthliness.

  1129. Thus

  1130. lively and

  1131. vigorous may

  1132. corruption be

  1133. in the

  1134. regenerate.

  1135. They may

  1136. fall into

  1137. enormous

  1138. sins,

  1139. but

  1140. through

  1141. their grace

  1142. may be

  1143. drawn low,

  1144. though their

  1145. grace may

  1146. be drawn

  1147. low,

  1148. it is not

  1149. drawn dry.

  1150. Though grace

  1151. may be

  1152. abated,

  1153. it is not

  1154. abolished.

  1155. Grace

  1156. may suffer

  1157. an eclipse,

  1158. not a

  1159. dissolution.

  1160. A believer

  1161. may fall

  1162. from some

  1163. degrees of

  1164. grace,

  1165. but not

  1166. from the

  1167. state

  1168. of grace.

  1169. grace.

  1170. So we

  1171. feel this

  1172. already

  1173. and the

  1174. not yet.

  1175. Wretched

  1176. man that

  1177. I am,

  1178. who will

  1179. deliver me

  1180. from this

  1181. body of

  1182. death?

  1183. Listen to

  1184. King David

  1185. say similar

  1186. things in

  1187. Psalm 38.

  1188. I'm going to

  1189. kind of jump

  1190. through the

  1191. text.

  1192. This is

  1193. verse 4,

  1194. verse 9 and

  1195. 10,

  1196. verse 17 and

  1197. 18,

  1198. and verse

  1199. 21 and

  1200. 22.

  1201. But listen to

  1202. what he

  1203. says.

  1204. My

  1205. iniquities

  1206. have gone

  1207. over my

  1208. head like

  1209. a heavy

  1210. burden.

  1211. They are

  1212. too heavy

  1213. for me.

  1214. O Lord,

  1215. all my

  1216. longing is

  1217. before you.

  1218. My

  1219. sighing is

  1220. not hidden

  1221. from you.

  1222. My heart

  1223. throbs.

  1224. My strength

  1225. fails me.

  1226. And the

  1227. light of my

  1228. eyes, it

  1229. has also

  1230. gone from

  1231. me.

  1232. I am

  1233. ready to

  1234. fall, and

  1235. my pain

  1236. is ever

  1237. before me.

  1238. I confess

  1239. my iniquity.

  1240. I am

  1241. sorry for

  1242. my sin.

  1243. Do not

  1244. forsake

  1245. me, O

  1246. Lord.

  1247. O my

  1248. God, be

  1249. not far

  1250. from me.

  1251. Make

  1252. haste to

  1253. help me,

  1254. O

  1255. Lord,

  1256. my

  1257. salvation.

  1258. Do you

  1259. hear the

  1260. groaning

  1261. inwardly as

  1262. we wait

  1263. eagerly for

  1264. adoption of

  1265. sons, the

  1266. redemption of

  1267. our bodies

  1268. in these

  1269. texts?

  1270. us.

  1271. Notice

  1272. that Paul

  1273. places

  1274. emphasis on

  1275. our full

  1276. and final

  1277. deliverance

  1278. from our

  1279. fallen

  1280. humanness.

  1281. It is

  1282. certainly good

  1283. to long

  1284. for all

  1285. things to

  1286. be made

  1287. new, but

  1288. he is

  1289. pressing

  1290. us being

  1291. made

  1292. new.

  1293. This

  1294. will matter

  1295. greatly as

  1296. his argument

  1297. proceeds in

  1298. the coming

  1299. verses.

  1300. Mankind

  1301. is the

  1302. crowning of

  1303. God's

  1304. creation.

  1305. God

  1306. is

  1307. doing.

  1308. We are

  1309. made in

  1310. his image

  1311. and meant

  1312. to be

  1313. propagators

  1314. of his

  1315. glory.

  1316. We are

  1317. meant to

  1318. spread his

  1319. image and

  1320. glory

  1321. everywhere.

  1322. Notice in

  1323. verse 21

  1324. that the

  1325. creation

  1326. itself will

  1327. be set

  1328. free from

  1329. its bondage

  1330. to corruption

  1331. and obtain

  1332. the freedom

  1333. of the

  1334. glory of

  1335. the children

  1336. of God.

  1337. We are

  1338. the most

  1339. important

  1340. redemptive

  1341. thing that

  1342. God is

  1343. doing.

  1344. It affects

  1345. all the

  1346. other

  1347. things.

  1348. Now what

  1349. does all

  1350. of this

  1351. mean

  1352. for us?

  1353. Praise

  1354. God that

  1355. Paul tells

  1356. us.

  1357. We have

  1358. no need

  1359. to look

  1360. elsewhere

  1361. in the

  1362. text.

  1363. We don't

  1364. have to

  1365. philosophize

  1366. about it

  1367. at all.

  1368. He tells

  1369. us right

  1370. here in

  1371. the text

  1372. verse 24

  1373. and 25.

  1374. He says

  1375. for in

  1376. this

  1377. hope

  1378. we were

  1379. saved.

  1380. What

  1381. hope?

  1382. What hope

  1383. is he

  1384. talking

  1385. about?

  1386. He's

  1387. talking

  1388. about

  1389. the

  1390. hope

  1391. of

  1392. glory.

  1393. It's

  1394. in the

  1395. hope of

  1396. glory,

  1397. the very

  1398. reason

  1399. that we

  1400. were

  1401. saved.

  1402. And then

  1403. he goes

  1404. on to

  1405. say now,

  1406. hope that

  1407. is seen

  1408. is not

  1409. hope.

  1410. For who

  1411. hopes for

  1412. what he

  1413. sees?

  1414. Which is a

  1415. rhetorical

  1416. question.

  1417. Of course,

  1418. if the

  1419. thing is

  1420. already

  1421. here,

  1422. you have

  1423. no hope

  1424. that it

  1425. will

  1426. arrive.

  1427. It

  1428. has

  1429. already

  1430. !

  1431. a

  1432. wife.

  1433. Remember,

  1434. we're

  1435. waiting

  1436. with

  1437. eager

  1438. expectation

  1439. for

  1440. our

  1441. glory

  1442. to

  1443. arrive.

  1444. But then

  1445. he says

  1446. in verse

  1447. 25,

  1448. but if

  1449. we hope

  1450. for what

  1451. we do

  1452. not

  1453. see,

  1454. we wait

  1455. for it

  1456. with

  1457. patience.

  1458. Patient

  1459. hope.

  1460. What do

  1461. we do

  1462. with all

  1463. of this?

  1464. As we

  1465. live in

  1466. this

  1467. in-between

  1468. time,

  1469. having

  1470. been

  1471. delivered

  1472. from our

  1473. sin,

  1474. been

  1475. saved,

  1476. having

  1477. been

  1478. adopted,

  1479. and yet

  1480. awaiting

  1481. the full

  1482. culmination

  1483. of all

  1484. of the

  1485. promises

  1486. of God

  1487. for us.

  1488. Patient

  1489. hope.

  1490. Does

  1491. patient

  1492. hope

  1493. characterize

  1494. your

  1495. Christian

  1496. walk?

  1497. It

  1498. doesn't

  1499. always

  1500. characterize

  1501. mine,

  1502. to be

  1503. sure.

  1504. I

  1505. see a

  1506. lot

  1507. of

  1508. Christians

  1509. who

  1510. do

  1511. not

  1512. have

  1513. patient

  1514. hope.

  1515. They're

  1516. in

  1517. turmoil,

  1518. and they're

  1519. anxious,

  1520. unsure

  1521. of what

  1522. the

  1523. future

  1524. holds.

  1525. Avoiding

  1526. at every

  1527. turn

  1528. suffering

  1529. in this

  1530. life.

  1531. We've

  1532. got to

  1533. encounter

  1534. everything

  1535. that we

  1536. encounter

  1537. with

  1538. patient

  1539. hope.

  1540. Paul in

  1541. just a bit

  1542. is going

  1543. to tell

  1544. us,

  1545. because we

  1546. know

  1547. that for

  1548. those who

  1549. love God,

  1550. all things

  1551. work for

  1552. our

  1553. good.

  1554. We've

  1555. got to

  1556. be able

  1557. to settle

  1558. into these

  1559. great

  1560. truths,

  1561. to

  1562. rehearse

  1563. them

  1564. in

  1565. our

  1566. minds

  1567. over

  1568. and

  1569. over,

  1570. to

  1571. speak

  1572. these

  1573. truths

  1574. to

  1575. one

  1576. another,

  1577. that our

  1578. eyes

  1579. would be

  1580. set

  1581. heavenward,

  1582. beyond

  1583. this

  1584. life that

  1585. is but

  1586. a

  1587. vapor,

  1588. and to

  1589. the

  1590. eternity

  1591. of

  1592. glory

  1593. that

  1594. awaits

  1595. us.

  1596. For I

  1597. consider

  1598. that the

  1599. present

  1600. sufferings

  1601. of this

  1602. time are

  1603. not even

  1604. worth

  1605. comparing

  1606. with the

  1607. glory

  1608. that is

  1609. to be

  1610. revealed

  1611. to us.

  1612. we will

  1613. suffer

  1614. in

  1615. this

  1616. life.

  1617. But because

  1618. of these

  1619. sure

  1620. promises

  1621. of

  1622. Christ,

  1623. we wait

  1624. patiently

  1625. because

  1626. we wait

  1627. hopefully.

  1628. Now I

  1629. have a

  1630. third

  1631. point.

  1632. And there's

  1633. too much in

  1634. this third

  1635. point to

  1636. cram it

  1637. into this

  1638. morning.

  1639. I'm

  1640. looking at

  1641. the time

  1642. as we

  1643. speak.

  1644. So I'm

  1645. going to

  1646. hang on

  1647. to my

  1648. third

  1649. point.

  1650. The

  1651. Spirit

  1652. groans

  1653. for

  1654. glory.

  1655. And we'll

  1656. add it to

  1657. next week

  1658. or set it

  1659. aside by

  1660. itself.

  1661. And we'll

  1662. end off

  1663. with this

  1664. idea.

  1665. The

  1666. Christ

  1667. follower,

  1668. the one

  1669. who has

  1670. the first

  1671. fruits of

  1672. the Spirit

  1673. groans

  1674. along with

  1675. creation

  1676. patiently

  1677. with hope.

  1678. Let's pray

  1679. together.
