  1. I hope that the study of Romans has been encouraging to you.

  2. I hope especially chapter 8.

  3. ! It's been such a joy for myself to sit and rest in this chapter.

  4. We normally preach the Advent themes and just thought this year it would be great to press on through.

  5. And today's Advent theme is the Advent theme of love.

  6. And this text helps us fix our gaze on that very thing.

  7. So I'm grateful for the way this is timed out as we approach Christmas Day tomorrow.

  8. So let me just begin by reading the text.

  9. Before I do, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  10. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  11. Romans 8, beginning in verse 31.

  12. What then shall we say to these things?

  13. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  14. He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all,

  15. how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

  16. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  17. It is God who justifies.

  18. Who is to condemn?

  19. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  20. More than that who was raised, who is at the right hand of God,

  21. who indeed is interceding for us.

  22. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  23. Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

  24. As it is written,

  25. For your sake we are being killed all the day long.

  26. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  27. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

  28. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers,

  29. nor things present nor things to come,

  30. nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation

  31. will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  32. Paul begins this part of Romans 8 with a question.

  33. What then shall we say to these things?

  34. And what things is Paul referring to?

  35. Well, he's referring directly to chapter 8 verses 28 through 30,

  36. where Paul speaks of the unstoppable plan of God to pursue his people to the end.

  37. In this text is contained a brief order of salvation,

  38. the main point of which is that God acts, God accomplishes, and God maintains.

  39. Oh, recall, beloved, that these three verses are meant to be comfort to the weary soul.

  40. Since the end of chapter 7, Paul has expressed the challenge of living in our corrupted flesh

  41. and living in a corrupted world.

  42. And then he says, beginning in verse 28,

  43. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good

  44. for those who are called according to his purpose.

  45. For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of a son,

  46. in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  47. And those whom he predestined, he also called.

  48. And those whom he called, he also justifies.

  49. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.

  50. And last week we considered these verses in terms of the confidence that is ours in this life.

  51. Paul says, and we know.

  52. And we considered it in three points.

  53. First, our confidence in God's providence.

  54. So providence is God's purposeful sovereignty.

  55. It's him working in his power to accomplish purpose for us.

  56. And if you are a Christian, then anything and everything that happens in your life

  57. is being used of God for your good.

  58. We saw, secondly, that we have a confidence in God's purpose.

  59. What is that purpose?

  60. What is it that he is working providentially to accomplish in our lives?

  61. We saw that we would look more and more like Christ to the praise of Christ.

  62. And we saw, thirdly, our confidence in God's plan.

  63. If we are to have the confidence that Paul here states we are to have,

  64. then we must be confident in God's plan.

  65. You will not weather well the storms this life will assail you with

  66. apart from an anchored confidence in all that God has guaranteed for you

  67. in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  68. And verse 31 is an elaboration of the very point that Paul has been making

  69. concerning our confidence.

  70. So he asks a question,

  71. What then shall we say to these things?

  72. And he answers that question,

  73. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  74. This is an answer worth settling into.

  75. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  76. When life is full of trouble,

  77. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  78. When you feel like an outsider at work or with your family

  79. because you're trying to live a holy life,

  80. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  81. When it seems that we live in an age that has abandoned all truth and reasonableness,

  82. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  83. When the American church appears to be crumbling down around us,

  84. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  85. When you or someone you love dearly receives a tragic diagnosis,

  86. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  87. When you struggle against your flesh and it falters and it fails,

  88. if God is for us, who can be against us?

  89. Let this answer framed as a question,

  90. a response to God's providence and purpose and plan,

  91. be emblazoned across your mind.

  92. Have it be your ruling thought,

  93. despite how desperate you may feel in any given moment,

  94. if God is for us,

  95. who can be against us?

  96. No one and nothing.

  97. Because we know that for those who love God,

  98. all things work together for good.

  99. Every bit of trouble in this life,

  100. if God is for us,

  101. we know that God is working it for the great good

  102. that we would look like Christ for Christ.

  103. So, who can be against us?

  104. Paul then asks and answers four follow-up questions

  105. that are meant to help us consider this reality

  106. that if God is for us,

  107. no one can be against us.

  108. Before we look at those four questions and answers,

  109. I want us to notice the qualifying factor

  110. in all that Paul is saying.

  111. He says,

  112. if God is for us.

  113. It is also possible that God is not for you,

  114. and the basis of this being,

  115. for or not for,

  116. is whether or not you are in Christ.

  117. Let's not neglect the context of Paul's phrase here.

  118. Paul is speaking directly to Christians in this letter.

  119. Those who are professing faith in Jesus Christ.

  120. Remember in Romans chapter 8 and verse 1,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  121. he says,

  122. There is therefore now no condemnation

  123. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  124. Every person, he has said,

  125. Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  126. has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  127. We deserve condemnation,

  128. but for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  129. Romans 8, 1 says,

  130. there is no condemnation.

  131. He goes on to say in chapter 8, verse 5,

  132. Those who live according to the flesh

  133. set their minds on the things of the flesh,

  134. but those who live according to the Spirit

  135. set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  136. So, there's two categories of people, right?

  137. Those who are in Christ

  138. and those who are not in Christ.

  139. Those who have the Spirit

  140. and therefore set their minds

  141. on the things of the Spirit

  142. and those who do not have the Spirit

  143. and do not set their minds

  144. on the things of the Spirit.

  145. Those who for there is no condemnation

  146. and those who there is condemnation.

  147. Those that God is for

  148. and those that God is not for.

  149. Romans 8, 9 says,

  150. You, however,

  151. are not in the flesh,

  152. but in the Spirit,

  153. if in fact the Spirit of God

  154. dwells in you.

  155. And so Paul expresses some concern here

  156. that perhaps those who are professing

  157. faith in Christ

  158. are not actually in Christ

  159. and therefore Christ is not in them

  160. by the Spirit.

  161. And then he says,

  162. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ

  163. does not belong to Him.

  164. And so we just must ask the question,

  165. as Paul is making this case to us,

  166. that if we are in Christ,

  167. then Christ is in us by the Spirit

  168. and we will be setting our minds

  169. on the things of the Spirit,

  170. namely His Word,

  171. that we would be affectionate toward

  172. and have the ruling thoughts in our life

  173. be those things that are of God.

  174. And so, what most occupies your mind?

  175. What do you think about

  176. when you seem to be thinking about nothing at all?

  177. Is your general disposition bent Godward or not?

  178. These are important things for us to consider

  179. and to think about.

  180. How do our affections for the things of God

  181. stir us to the activity of God?

  182. Elsewhere, Paul says,

  183. this is Galatians 5, verse 22 and 23,

    Galatians 5:22

  184. the fruit of the Spirit

  185. is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

  186. faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

  187. God works things into us

  188. that He works then out of us

  189. by the power of the Spirit.

  190. And if we are in Christ,

  191. if God is for us,

  192. then He is also in us

  193. working on our behalf.

  194. And so, consider carefully this morning,

  195. is God for you?

  196. Do you fit in this category

  197. as an adopted Son of God?

  198. And I do hope that you can join us

  199. this morning in confidently saying,

  200. and we know.

  201. Because if you can then,

  202. if God is for you,

  203. no one can be against you.

  204. If you are in Christ Jesus,

  205. then this reality includes you.

  206. You are safe because you are saved by God.

  207. God is for you.

  208. So, now that we've dealt with the qualifying factor,

  209. let's look at Paul's follow-up questions and answers.

  210. Number one, verse 32,

  211. He who did not spare His own Son,

  212. but gave Him up for us all,

  213. how will He not also with Him

  214. graciously give us all things?

  215. God's commitment to us

  216. is most readily seen at the cross.

  217. He gave His very own Son

  218. to ransom us from the clutches of our sin

  219. and to bring us to Himself.

  220. What clear picture do we need

  221. of God's concern for us?

  222. John 3, 16.

  223. John writes,

  224. For God so loved the world

  225. that He gave His only Son

  226. that whoever believes in Him

  227. should not perish

  228. but have eternal life.

  229. The prophet Isaiah records in Isaiah 53,

  230. this is verses 4-6,

  231. and then verse 10.

  232. Surely, Christ has borne our griefs

  233. and carried our sorrows.

  234. Yet we esteemed Him stricken,

  235. smitten by God,

  236. and afflicted.

  237. But He was pierced for our transgressions.

  238. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  239. Upon Him was the chastisement

  240. that brought us peace,

  241. and with His wounds

  242. we are healed.

  243. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  244. We have turned everyone to His own way.

  245. And the Lord has laid on Him

  246. the iniquity of us all.

  247. Yet it was the will of the Lord

  248. to crush Him.

  249. He has put Him to grief.

  250. When His soul makes an offering for guilt,

  251. He shall see His offspring.

  252. He shall prolong His days.

  253. The will of the Lord

  254. shall prosper in His hand.

  255. God the Father

  256. gave to us

  257. God the Son

  258. that we might

  259. be brought back into relationship

  260. with Him.

  261. So Paul reasons

  262. if God the Father

  263. was willing to give up for us

  264. God the Son,

  265. how will He not also with Him

  266. graciously give us

  267. all things?

  268. That is, how could it be possible

  269. that having started

  270. with the greatest of gifts,

  271. will He not complete

  272. His plan

  273. of spiritual blessing

  274. for us?

  275. Again, don't forget the context.

  276. Just a few verses ago,

  277. Paul said in verse 16 and 17,

  278. the Spirit Himself bears witness

  279. with our spirit

  280. that we are children of God.

  281. and if children,

  282. then heirs,

  283. heirs of God

  284. and fellow heirs

  285. with Christ,

  286. provided we suffer with Him

  287. in order that we may also

  288. be glorified

  289. with Him.

  290. So Paul goes on

  291. to talk about how

  292. the suffering of this world

  293. isn't even worth comparing

  294. to the glory

  295. that's being revealed to us

  296. and how the creation

  297. and we

  298. and the Spirit within us

  299. all groan

  300. for this future

  301. glory.

  302. glory.

  303. So what is the

  304. all things

  305. that God has promised

  306. to give to us?

  307. It's all of the spiritual blessing

  308. that He's mentioned

  309. in verse 28

  310. through 30

  311. that culminates finally

  312. in our glorification.

  313. Right?

  314. How could it be possible

  315. that Him who gave us

  316. His very Son

  317. will not also give us

  318. all things?

  319. If God is for us,

  320. who can be against us?

  321. The second question

  322. that He asks

  323. we find in verse 33.

  324. Who shall bring

  325. any charge

  326. against God's elect?

  327. And He answers it,

  328. it is God

  329. who justifies.

  330. God is the judge

  331. and the justifier.

  332. We have been declared

  333. righteous

  334. in His court.

  335. We stand before God

  336. guilty of our own accord

  337. and we have

  338. no

  339. defense.

  340. When entering our plea,

  341. our plea can only be

  342. guilty

  343. when charged

  344. with our crimes.

  345. But another,

  346. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  347. just before our sentencing,

  348. declares

  349. mine.

  350. Mine.

  351. This one belongs

  352. to me

  353. and I have paid

  354. the penalty

  355. for his sin

  356. and I have given him

  357. my righteousness.

  358. He accomplishes this

  359. on our behalf

  360. in the courtroom

  361. of God.

  362. John MacArthur

  363. wrote of this text,

  364. God conceived the law,

  365. revealed the law,

  366. interprets the law,

  367. and applies the law.

  368. And through the sacrifice

  369. of His Son,

  370. all the demands

  371. of the law

  372. have been met

  373. for those

  374. who trust

  375. in Him.

  376. Who shall bring

  377. any charge

  378. against God's elect?

  379. It is God

  380. who justifies,

  381. declares

  382. righteous.

  383. Our punishment

  384. taken from us,

  385. eternal reward

  386. given to us

  387. because of Jesus'

  388. perfect

  389. law-keeping.

  390. We find

  391. another qualifier

  392. in this

  393. text.

  394. Paul says,

  395. who shall bring

  396. any charge

  397. against God's

  398. elect?

  399. And once again,

  400. Paul is not

  401. trying to pick

  402. a theological

  403. fight.

  404. Not at all

  405. what he is

  406. doing here.

  407. He's going to

  408. launch into

  409. some future

  410. chapters of

  411. working out

  412. all of the

  413. implications

  414. of the glories

  415. he states

  416. at the end

  417. of chapter 8.

  418. He here

  419. is just

  420. teaching

  421. Christians

  422. that their

  423. confidence

  424. is not

  425. in their

  426. works,

  427. but in

  428. God's

  429. working

  430. on their

  431. behalf.

  432. This should

  433. do nothing

  434. but

  435. comfort us.

  436. This truth

  437. is

  438. complex,

  439. I will

  440. admit.

  441. God's

  442. sovereignty

  443. in our

  444. salvation

  445. is complex.

  446. The doctrine

  447. of election

  448. gives us

  449. much to

  450. think about,

  451. but let

  452. us not

  453. miss

  454. that it

  455. is

  456. good.

  457. You

  458. were loved

  459. by God

  460. long before

  461. you did

  462. anything,

  463. good

  464. or bad,

  465. anything.

  466. Paul says

  467. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:3

  468. chapter 1

  469. verse 3

  470. and following,

  471. Blessed be

  472. the God

  473. and Father

  474. of our

  475. Lord Jesus

  476. Christ,

  477. who has

  478. blessed us

  479. in Christ

  480. with every

  481. spiritual

  482. blessing

  483. in the

  484. heavenly

  485. places,

  486. even as

  487. he chose

  488. us in

  489. him before

  490. the foundation

  491. of the

  492. world,

  493. that we

  494. should be

  495. holy and

  496. blameless

  497. before him.

  498. In love

  499. he predestined

  500. us for

  501. adoption to

  502. himself as

  503. sons through

  504. Jesus Christ

  505. according to

  506. the purpose

  507. of his

  508. will,

  509. to the

  510. praise of

  511. his glorious

  512. grace with

  513. which he

  514. has blessed

  515. us in

  516. the

  517. beloved.

  518. Beloved,

  519. if you do

  520. not like

  521. the doctrine

  522. of election,

  523. then you

  524. cannot love

  525. the doctrine

  526. of eternal

  527. security.

  528. They are

  529. cause and

  530. effect.

  531. And this

  532. doctrine is

  533. always taught

  534. to us for

  535. this great

  536. end, that

  537. we would

  538. know that

  539. if we belong

  540. to God,

  541. that he

  542. will keep

  543. us to

  544. the end.

  545. Who shall

  546. bring any

  547. charge against

  548. God's elect?

  549. It is God

  550. who justifies.

  551. God is

  552. for us.

  553. Who can

  554. be against

  555. us?

  556. The third

  557. question he

  558. asks,

  559. verse 34,

  560. who is

  561. to condemn?

  562. Similar to

  563. the question

  564. he asked

  565. previously in

  566. verse 33.

  567. And he

  568. answers it,

  569. Christ Jesus

  570. is the one

  571. who died,

  572. more than

  573. that who

  574. was raised,

  575. who is at

  576. the right

  577. hand of

  578. God,

  579. who is

  580. indeed

  581. interceding

  582. for us.

  583. Jesus

  584. Christ was

  585. condemned in

  586. our place

  587. and paid

  588. the penalty

  589. for our

  590. sin.

  591. He bore

  592. the eternal

  593. wrath that

  594. was justly

  595. due to

  596. us.

  597. This is the

  598. doctrine of

  599. penal

  600. substitutionary

  601. atonement and

  602. is central

  603. to the good

  604. news.

  605. We deserved

  606. a punishment

  607. and he took

  608. it on himself

  609. in our

  610. place.

  611. He atoned

  612. for the wrath

  613. of God

  614. that was

  615. due us.

  616. We will

  617. celebrate

  618. Christmas

  619. tomorrow.

  620. And while

  621. as we think

  622. about the

  623. incarnation,

  624. it is important

  625. to reflect

  626. upon the

  627. humility

  628. of the

  629. second part

  630. of the

  631. Godhead

  632. in the

  633. form of

  634. a baby

  635. lying

  636. in a

  637. feed trough.

  638. We ought

  639. not forget

  640. why,

  641. though,

  642. he was

  643. incarnate.

  644. It is good

  645. to think

  646. about him

  647. humbly

  648. coming

  649. as a baby,

  650. but he

  651. came for

  652. a purpose.

  653. A baby

  654. born as

  655. a king

  656. to rule

  657. and to

  658. reign.

  659. Sometimes I

  660. think our

  661. focus gets a

  662. little shifted

  663. too heavily

  664. in one

  665. direction.

  666. Remember

  667. Jesus said

  668. in Mark

    Mark 10:45

  669. 10,

  670. verse 45,

  671. the Son

  672. of Man

  673. came not

  674. to be

  675. served,

  676. but to

  677. serve and

  678. to give

  679. his life

  680. as a

  681. ransom

  682. for many.

  683. Jesus'

  684. focus was

  685. fixed on

  686. the purpose

  687. for which

  688. he came,

  689. to die

  690. in our

  691. place.

  692. Jesus Christ

  693. is the

  694. one who

  695. died.

  696. However,

  697. his work

  698. did not

  699. end there.

  700. He is

  701. risen and

  702. interceding

  703. or praying

  704. for us.

  705. The text

  706. says,

  707. verse 34,

  708. that Jesus

  709. is at the

  710. right hand

  711. of God

  712. and interceding

  713. for us.

  714. Hebrews 8,

  715. 1 states

  716. that we

  717. have such

  718. a high

  719. priest,

  720. one who

  721. is seated

  722. at the

  723. right hand

  724. of the

  725. throne

  726. of the

  727. majesty

  728. in heaven.

  729. So we

  730. pick up

  731. the detail

  732. that not

  733. only is

  734. Jesus at

  735. the right

  736. hand of

  737. the Father,

  738. the place

  739. of honor,

  740. the place

  741. of esteem,

  742. but also

  743. that he

  744. is seated

  745. there.

  746. Jesus

  747. declared in

  748. his dying

  749. breath,

  750. it is

  751. finished.

  752. He has

  753. no need

  754. like the

  755. earthly

  756. priest to

  757. continually

  758. make

  759. sacrifice

  760. because

  761. he

  762. himself

  763. was

  764. that

  765. sacrifice

  766. and he

  767. died

  768. once

  769. for all.

  770. The work

  771. is completed.

  772. All that

  773. he was sent

  774. to accomplish

  775. is guaranteed

  776. by his

  777. death

  778. and

  779. resurrection.

  780. It is a

  781. sure

  782. thing

  783. that all

  784. that he

  785. purchased

  786. in his

  787. death

  788. will

  789. come

  790. to

  791. believe

  792. in him

  793. and

  794. will

  795. persist

  796. to the

  797. end.

  798. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  799. chapter 1

  800. the first

  801. part of

  802. verse 20

  803. says

  804. for all

  805. the promises

  806. of God

  807. find their

  808. yes

  809. in

  810. Christ.

  811. Finished

  812. work.

  813. Guaranteed

  814. result.

  815. And Paul

  816. tells us

  817. as we live

  818. in this

  819. age of

  820. already

  821. and not

  822. yet

  823. that

  824. Jesus

  825. is

  826. praying

  827. for

  828. us.

  829. This

  830. is just

  831. an

  832. unfathomable

  833. depth.

  834. I don't

  835. have much

  836. to say

  837. about it.

  838. He's

  839. told us

  840. previously

  841. in this

  842. chapter

  843. that the

  844. Spirit

  845. intercedes

  846. for us

  847. and now

  848. that

  849. Christ

  850. Jesus

  851. intercedes

  852. for us.

  853. What

  854. glorious

  855. truths

  856. these are.

  857. As we

  858. walk in

  859. this

  860. difficult

  861. life

  862. and it

  863. is

  864. surely

  865. difficult

  866. we

  867. should

  868. be

  869. comforted

  870. that

  871. the

  872. Godhead

  873. prays

  874. for us

  875. works

  876. on our

  877. behalf

  878. for what

  879. purpose

  880. that our

  881. holiness

  882. would bring

  883. about the

  884. praise

  885. of Christ.

  886. He is

  887. with us

  888. and he

  889. is for

  890. us.

  891. If God

  892. is for

  893. us

  894. who

  895. could

  896. be

  897. against

  898. us?

  899. The

  900. fourth

  901. and last

  902. question

  903. that he

  904. asks

  905. verse

  906. 35

  907. who

  908. shall

  909. separate

  910. us

  911. from

  912. the

  913. love

  914. of

  915. Christ?

  916. Paul's

  917. answer

  918. to this

  919. question

  920. also

  921. implies

  922. or

  923. what

  924. shall

  925. separate

  926. us

  927. from

  928. the

  929. love

  930. of

  931. Christ?

  932. And

  933. his

  934. emphatic

  935. answer

  936. is

  937. nothing.

  938. Nothing.

  939. Shall

  940. tribulation

  941. or

  942. distress

  943. or

  944. persecution

  945. or

  946. famine

  947. or

  948. nakedness

  949. or

  950. danger

  951. or

  952. sword?

  953. As it

  954. is

  955. written,

  956. for

  957. your

  958. sake

  959. we

  960. are

  961. being

  962. killed

  963. all

  964. the

  965. day

  966. long.

  967. We

  968. are

  969. regarded

  970. as

  971. sheep

  972. to be

  973. slaughtered.

  974. Shall

  975. all of

  976. the

  977. trouble

  978. that

  979. this

  980. world

  981. can

  982. throw

  983. at

  984. us

  985. separate

  986. us

  987. from

  988. the

  989. love

  990. of

  991. Christ?

  992. And

  993. he

  994. does

  995. this

  996. very

  997. interesting

  998. thing

  999. in

  1000. verse

  1001. 36.

  1002. He

  1003. cites

  1004. Psalm

  1005. 44

  1006. and

  1007. verse

  1008. 22.

  1009. And

  1010. it

  1011. feels

  1012. upon

  1013. first

  1014. reading

  1015. it

  1016. like

  1017. an

  1018. unnecessary

  1019. assertion.

  1020. It

  1021. feels

  1022. as if

  1023. Paul

  1024. under the

  1025. inspiration

  1026. of the

  1027. Spirit

  1028. feels

  1029. like

  1030. he

  1031. needs

  1032. to

  1033. prove

  1034. himself

  1035. from

  1036. the

  1037. Old

  1038. Testament

  1039. as we

  1040. often

  1041. do

  1042. in our

  1043. preaching.

  1044. We

  1045. draw on

  1046. text

  1047. to say

  1048. this

  1049. thing

  1050. I'm

  1051. saying

  1052. to

  1053. you

  1054. is

  1055. not

  1056. a

  1057. crazy

  1058. thing.

  1059. Look

  1060. here

  1061. it

  1062. is

  1063. in

  1064. the

  1065. Bible.

  1066. I

  1067. think

  1068. Paul

  1069. felt

  1070. the

  1071. need

  1072. to

  1073. do

  1074. that

  1075. to

  1076. prove

  1077. himself

  1078. from

  1079. the

  1080. Old

  1081. Testament

  1082. text.

  1083. So he

  1084. must be

  1085. doing

  1086. something

  1087. more

  1088. interesting

  1089. than that.

  1090. So join

  1091. me if

  1092. you will

  1093. in

  1094. Psalm

  1095. 44.

  1096. While

  1097. you're

  1098. getting there

  1099. I'm just

  1100. going to

  1101. tell you

  1102. that in

  1103. verses

  1104. 1-8

  1105. the

  1106. psalmist

  1107. recounts

  1108. the past

  1109. glories

  1110. of

  1111. Israel's

  1112. history.

  1113. The way

  1114. that

  1115. God

  1116. had

  1117. worked

  1118. on

  1119. behalf

  1120. of

  1121. Israel.

  1122. Verse

  1123. 1 says

  1124. O

  1125. God we

  1126. have

  1127. heard

  1128. with

  1129. our

  1130. ears

  1131. our

  1132. fathers

  1133. have

  1134. told

  1135. us

  1136. what

  1137. deeds

  1138. you

  1139. performed

  1140. in

  1141. their

  1142. days

  1143. in

  1144. the

  1145. days

  1146. of

  1147. old.

  1148. He

  1149. reaches

  1150. back

  1151. the

  1152. psalmist

  1153. does

  1154. to the

  1155. history

  1156. of the

  1157. way

  1158. that

  1159. God

  1160. had

  1161. worked

  1162. amongst

  1163. his

  1164. people

  1165. but

  1166. then

  1167. beginning

  1168. in

  1169. verse

  1170. 9

  1171. he

  1172. laments

  1173. Israel's

  1174. present

  1175. state

  1176. and

  1177. declares

  1178. that

  1179. Israel

  1180. God's

  1181. people

  1182. had

  1183. not

  1184. forgotten

  1185. God

  1186. or

  1187. turned

  1188. away

  1189. from

  1190. him.

  1191. And then

  1192. he says

  1193. in

  1194. verse

  1195. 22

  1196. this is

  1197. what

  1198. Paul

  1199. cites

  1200. in

  1201. Romans

  1202. 8

  1203. yet

  1204. for

  1205. your

  1206. sake

  1207. we

  1208. are

  1209. killed

  1210. all

  1211. the

  1212. day

  1213. long

  1214. we

  1215. are

  1216. regarded

  1217. as

  1218. sheep

  1219. to be

  1220. slaughtered.

  1221. we

  1222. have

  1223. been

  1224. faithful

  1225. to

  1226. you

  1227. and

  1228. yet

  1229. it

  1230. seems

  1231. that

  1232. you

  1233. have

  1234. forgotten

  1235. us

  1236. because

  1237. we

  1238. are

  1239. being

  1240. killed

  1241. like

  1242. sheep.

  1243. You

  1244. see

  1245. Paul

  1246. cites

  1247. this

  1248. verse

  1249. to

  1250. explain

  1251. the

  1252. present

  1253. state

  1254. of

  1255. the

  1256. faithful.

  1257. Those

  1258. who

  1259. were

  1260. familiar

  1261. with

  1262. Psalm

  1263. 44

  1264. would

  1265. have

  1266. understood

  1267. the

  1268. lament

  1269. of

  1270. the

  1271. psalmist.

  1272. We

  1273. will

  1274. experience

  1275. tribulation

  1276. and

  1277. distress

  1278. and

  1279. persecution

  1280. and

  1281. possibly

  1282. famine

  1283. or

  1284. destitution

  1285. or

  1286. danger

  1287. or

  1288. sword.

  1289. But then

  1290. the

  1291. psalmist

  1292. in

  1293. Psalm

  1294. 44

  1295. goes

  1296. on.

  1297. Awake!

  1298. Why are

  1299. you

  1300. sleeping,

  1301. O Lord?

  1302. Rouse

  1303. yourself.

  1304. Do not

  1305. reject us

  1306. forever.

  1307. Why do

  1308. you hide

  1309. your face?

  1310. Why do

  1311. you forget

  1312. our

  1313. affliction

  1314. and

  1315. oppression?

  1316. For

  1317. our soul

  1318. is bound

  1319. down to

  1320. the dust.

  1321. Our

  1322. belly

  1323. clings

  1324. to the

  1325. ground.

  1326. Rise

  1327. up.

  1328. Come

  1329. to our

  1330. help.

  1331. redeem

  1332. us

  1333. for the

  1334. sake

  1335. of

  1336. your

  1337. steadfast

  1338. love.

  1339. Now we

  1340. probably,

  1341. when we

  1342. read

  1343. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1344. chapter

  1345. 8,

  1346. and Paul

  1347. cites

  1348. Psalm

    Psalms 44:22

  1349. 44

  1350. verse 22,

  1351. don't have

  1352. our minds

  1353. drawn to

  1354. the context

  1355. the way

  1356. his original

  1357. readers were.

  1358. We've got to

  1359. do a little

  1360. more work,

  1361. and I'm

  1362. doing that

  1363. work for

  1364. you at

  1365. the moment

  1366. this

  1367. morning.

  1368. Do you

  1369. see what

  1370. Paul is

  1371. doing by

  1372. citing

  1373. Psalm

  1374. 44

  1375. 22.

  1376. Paul is

  1377. stating,

  1378. under the

  1379. inspiration of

  1380. the Spirit,

  1381. that God

  1382. has come

  1383. to our

  1384. help.

  1385. He has

  1386. redeemed us,

  1387. and he has

  1388. done so

  1389. because of

  1390. his steadfast

  1391. love.

  1392. See that

  1393. connection

  1394. there?

  1395. So you

  1396. find yourself

  1397. in a

  1398. moment in

  1399. your life

  1400. feeling as

  1401. the psalmist

  1402. of Psalm

  1403. 44 feels.

  1404. Why are you

  1405. sleeping,

  1406. O Lord?

  1407. Where are

  1408. you?

  1409. Have you

  1410. rejected me?

  1411. What's

  1412. going on?

  1413. You feel

  1414. like you're

  1415. a sheep

  1416. to be

  1417. slaughtered.

  1418. You feel

  1419. like you've

  1420. been separated

  1421. from the

  1422. love of

  1423. God.

  1424. Paul

  1425. says,

  1426. no.

  1427. Our

  1428. circumstances

  1429. may not

  1430. be

  1431. temporally

  1432. pleasant,

  1433. but we

  1434. are

  1435. eternally

  1436. blessed.

  1437. Verse 37,

  1438. no,

  1439. in all

  1440. these things

  1441. we are

  1442. more than

  1443. conquerors

  1444. through

  1445. him

  1446. who

  1447. loved

  1448. us.

  1449. Despite

  1450. everything

  1451. going on

  1452. in the

  1453. already

  1454. and the

  1455. not

  1456. yet,

  1457. we are

  1458. more

  1459. than

  1460. conquerors.

  1461. It is a

  1462. guaranteed

  1463. thing.

  1464. That we

  1465. will

  1466. receive

  1467. the

  1468. blessing

  1469. that

  1470. awaits

  1471. us.

  1472. This

  1473. glory

  1474. that

  1475. we

  1476. groan

  1477. for

  1478. because

  1479. if

  1480. God

  1481. is

  1482. for

  1483. us,

  1484. who

  1485. can

  1486. be

  1487. against

  1488. us?

  1489. Verse

  1490. 38,

  1491. for I

  1492. am

  1493. sure,

  1494. and I

  1495. just

  1496. love

  1497. these

  1498. sweeping

  1499. comments.

  1500. That's

  1501. what Paul

  1502. is doing

  1503. here.

  1504. He

  1505. is

  1506. just

  1507. trying

  1508. to

  1509. encapsulate

  1510. every

  1511. possible

  1512. thing

  1513. that

  1514. might

  1515. come

  1516. into

  1517. your

  1518. mind,

  1519. that

  1520. might

  1521. separate

  1522. you

  1523. from

  1524. the

  1525. love

  1526. of

  1527. God

  1528. in

  1529. Christ

  1530. Jesus

  1531. our

  1532. Lord.

  1533. He

  1534. says,

  1535. I

  1536. am

  1537. sure

  1538. that

  1539. neither

  1540. death

  1541. nor

  1542. life,

  1543. nor

  1544. angels

  1545. nor

  1546. rulers,

  1547. nor

  1548. things

  1549. present,

  1550. nor

  1551. things

  1552. to

  1553. come,

  1554. nor

  1555. powers,

  1556. nor

  1557. height,

  1558. nor

  1559. depth,

  1560. nor

  1561. anything

  1562. else

  1563. in

  1564. all

  1565. creation

  1566. will

  1567. be

  1568. able

  1569. to

  1570. separate

  1571. us

  1572. from

  1573. the

  1574. love

  1575. of

  1576. God

  1577. in

  1578. Christ

  1579. Jesus

  1580. our

  1581. Lord.

  1582. So

  1583. good.

  1584. Charles

  1585. Spurgeon

  1586. once

  1587. said,

  1588. God's

  1589. children

  1590. are

  1591. God's

  1592. children

  1593. anywhere

  1594. and

  1595. everywhere

  1596. and

  1597. shall

  1598. be

  1599. even

  1600. unto

  1601. the

  1602. end.

  1603. Nothing

  1604. can

  1605. sever

  1606. that

  1607. sacred

  1608. tie

  1609. or

  1610. divide

  1611. us

  1612. from

  1613. his

  1614. heart.

  1615. If

  1616. God

  1617. is

  1618. for

  1619. us,

  1620. who

  1621. can

  1622. be

  1623. against

  1624. us?

  1625. Romans

  1626. 8 is

  1627. such

  1628. a

  1629. precious

  1630. chapter

  1631. in

  1632. the

  1633. Bible.

  1634. Some

  1635. have

  1636. argued

  1637. the

  1638. book of

  1639. Romans is

  1640. the

  1641. most

  1642. important

  1643. book

  1644. of the

  1645. Bible.

  1646. That

  1647. it's

  1648. the

  1649. hinge

  1650. on which

  1651. all of

  1652. the

  1653. truths

  1654. of

  1655. Scripture

  1656. swing

  1657. and

  1658. that

  1659. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1660. chapter

  1661. 8

  1662. is

  1663. the

  1664. spindle,

  1665. which

  1666. is

  1667. that

  1668. little

  1669. thing

  1670. that

  1671. goes

  1672. down

  1673. the

  1674. middle

  1675. of

  1676. a

  1677. hinge

  1678. that

  1679. holds

  1680. it

  1681. all

  1682. together.

  1683. I

  1684. hope

  1685. you

  1686. don't

  1687. underestimate

  1688. the

  1689. significance

  1690. of

  1691. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1692. chapter

  1693. 8,

  1694. especially

  1695. what

  1696. Paul

  1697. is

  1698. arguing

  1699. from

  1700. verse

  1701. 28

  1702. and to

  1703. the

  1704. end

  1705. of

  1706. the

  1707. chapter.

  1708. It's

  1709. core to

  1710. what he's

  1711. teaching us

  1712. in this

  1713. book and

  1714. we're going

  1715. to work on

  1716. unpacking it

  1717. further in

  1718. the next

  1719. year.

  1720. Before I

  1721. conclude today

  1722. and pray for

  1723. us, I

  1724. just want to

  1725. read the end

  1726. of the chapter

  1727. again.

  1728. It brings me

  1729. such joy

  1730. to read it.

  1731. I'm going to

  1732. start in

  1733. verse 28,

  1734. read to the

  1735. end,

  1736. and pray

  1737. on our

  1738. behalf.

  1739. And we

  1740. know

  1741. that for

  1742. those who

  1743. love God,

  1744. all things

  1745. work together

  1746. for good,

  1747. for those

  1748. who are

  1749. called

  1750. according to

  1751. his purpose.

  1752. For those

  1753. whom he

  1754. foreknew,

  1755. he also

  1756. predestined

  1757. to be

  1758. conformed

  1759. to the

  1760. image of

  1761. his son,

  1762. in order

  1763. that he

  1764. might be

  1765. the first

  1766. born among

  1767. many

  1768. brothers.

  1769. And those

  1770. whom he

  1771. predestined,

  1772. he also

  1773. called.

  1774. And those

  1775. whom he

  1776. called,

  1777. he also

  1778. justified.

  1779. And those

  1780. whom he

  1781. justified,

  1782. he also

  1783. glorified.

  1784. What then

  1785. shall we

  1786. say to

  1787. these

  1788. things?

  1789. If God

  1790. is for

  1791. us,

  1792. who can

  1793. be against

  1794. us?

  1795. He did not

  1796. spare his

  1797. own son,

  1798. but gave

  1799. him up

  1800. for us

  1801. all.

  1802. How will

  1803. we not

  1804. also with

  1805. him graciously

  1806. give us

  1807. all things?

  1808. Who shall

  1809. bring any

  1810. charge against

  1811. God's elect?

  1812. It is God

  1813. who justifies.

  1814. Who is to

  1815. condemn?

  1816. Christ Jesus

  1817. is the one

  1818. who died,

  1819. more than

  1820. that who

  1821. was raised,

  1822. who is at

  1823. the right

  1824. hand of

  1825. God,

  1826. who indeed

  1827. is interceding

  1828. for us?

  1829. Who shall

  1830. separate us

  1831. from the

  1832. love of

  1833. Christ?

  1834. Shall

  1835. tribulation

  1836. or distress

  1837. or persecution

  1838. or famine

  1839. or nakedness

  1840. or danger

  1841. or sword?

  1842. As it is

  1843. written,

  1844. for your

  1845. sake were you

  1846. being killed

  1847. all the day

  1848. long,

  1849. were you

  1850. regarded as

  1851. sheep to

  1852. be slaughtered?

  1853. No,

  1854. in all these

  1855. things we are

  1856. more than

  1857. conquerors through

  1858. him who

  1859. loved us.

  1860. For I am

  1861. sure that

  1862. neither death

  1863. nor life,

  1864. nor angels

  1865. nor rulers,

  1866. nor things

  1867. present nor

  1868. things to

  1869. come,

  1870. nor powers,

  1871. nor height,

  1872. nor depth,

  1873. nor anything

  1874. else in all

  1875. creation will

  1876. be able to

  1877. separate us

  1878. from the love

  1879. of God in

  1880. Christ Jesus,

  1881. our Lord.
