  3. Gospel of Luke, chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  4. So as Jake stated earlier,

  5. !

  6. Put a lot of thought into New Year's.

  7. Maybe I should.

  8. But for a lot of people in our culture

  9. and those around us,

  10. it's like the time to kick off new things.

  11. It's to make big resolutions,

  12. small ones, big ones,

  13. all the best intention

  14. to bring about change in somebody's life.

  15. And out of curiosity,

  16. I looked up the top 2024 New Year's resolutions.

  17. None of them will shock you,

  18. but a survey says

  19. improving finances, shocker, 38%.

  20. Losing weight, 33%.

  21. Improving one's diet, 31%.

  22. And a lot of well-meaning, I guess,

  23. but fewer people focus on goals

  24. like learning a new skill, 8%.

  25. Hobbies, 7%.

  26. And traveling more, 5%.

  27. The problem occurs somehow

  28. when we fail to keep these new resolutions of change.

  29. I heard recently that March is the month

  30. when most people quit.

  31. Everything they're doing.

  32. They start strong in January,

  33. they struggle in February,

  34. and then they quit in March.

  35. And they start to say,

  36. this is harder than I thought it was going to be,

  37. so I'm just going to stop.

  38. After all, I made this promise to myself

  39. and not other people,

  40. so I can quit on myself.

  41. But some people make resolutions with somebody else,

  42. like your spouse or your friend,

  43. and that can end too.

  44. All you've got to do is tap into that same temptation

  45. and weakness that they're having

  46. and quit together.

  47. So unless one of you is stronger

  48. and can kind of push through a little more

  49. and say, no, no, we're not quitting.

  50. Keep going.

  51. So anyway, our sinful condition

  52. tends to drift us towards laziness,

  53. indulgence, and comfort.

  54. And so we don't like disciplining ourselves.

  55. But for the believer,

  56. discipline is a critical part of our everyday life.

  57. It's not like we just try it once a year.

  58. It should be infused to our everyday living.

  59. In fact, like a lot of the meaning of the word disciple

  60. comes from this idea of discipline.

  61. And so this week, today, next Sunday,

  62. we're going to talk about more specific resolutions

  63. maybe next week and unpack that.

  64. But I kind of wanted to give us one broad one for the day.

  65. And that is resolve to follow Jesus Christ.

  66. Resolve to follow Jesus.

  67. And it may sound kind of shallow for Christians, right?

  68. Of course we're supposed to follow Jesus.

  69. But there are only two types of people in this room.

  70. Those who have given their lives to Christ,

  71. who have repented of their sins

  72. and thrown their self on the grace of God

  73. and come to saving faith in Jesus Christ

  74. and are reconciled to God

  75. and now are disciples and followers of Jesus

  76. and those who aren't.

  77. And so let's look at, I mean, just, I think,

  78. just a very simple definition of a resolution

  79. is to reach a clear and firm decision on something.

  80. Right?

  81. And so Jonathan Edwards, we think of him

  82. when we think about resolutions,

  83. those who know some of their church history

  84. and read some of the old guys.

  85. Jonathan Edwards wrote,

  86. Resolved by God's grace to love my Lord Jesus Christ

  87. by daily denying myself,

  88. taking up my cross,

  89. and following him wherever he leads,

  90. no matter the cost.

  91. Those of you who are familiar with Jonathan Edwards,

  92. he did not write that.

  93. I wrote that.

  94. But I thought you would listen to it more

  95. if I said that he wrote it.

  96. So this is actually one of the points, okay?

  97. And I want you to, I'll read this slower

  98. so you can follow.

  99. But this is the main point we will be unpacking today.

  100. It's not a lighthearted subject

  101. to talk about the cost of discipleship.

  102. But our main point, we would say,

  103. is this resolution to resolve by God's grace

  104. to love my Lord Jesus Christ

  105. by daily denying myself,

  106. taking up my cross,

  107. and following him wherever he leads,

  108. no matter the cost.

  109. And so, just a quick reminder

  110. that we never graduate or move on from the gospel.

  111. It's the greatest news possible

  112. that God won for us over sin,

  113. over death,

  114. over hell by sending his son

  115. to graciously save sinners.

  116. That's what we read in John 3, right?

  117. That God so loved the world,

  118. he gave his only son,

  119. that whoever believes in him

  120. would have eternal life, right?

  121. They would not perish.

  122. For God did not send his son into the world

  123. to condemn the world, right?

  124. But in the world that might be saved through him.

  125. So, let's not confuse some things.

  126. Salvation is a free gift of God's grace.

  127. You cannot earn it.

  128. You cannot pay it back.

  129. It only comes as a result of God's grace,

  130. love, and mercy

  131. towards sinners in Jesus Christ.

  132. Alright?

  133. So, that's the good news.

  134. That's what we're resting on.

  135. And so, like I mentioned earlier,

  136. there's only two types of people in the room.

  137. Those who are probably most of us here,

  138. the church,

  139. those who have a relationship with Christ

  140. and have trusted for him

  141. and for salvation

  142. and have devoted their lives

  143. to following him

  144. and obeying him

  145. and loving him.

  146. So, for you,

  147. for most of us,

  148. let's renew our desire

  149. to follow Jesus.

  150. Renew our desire

  151. to take up our cross.

  152. And then there's those

  153. who don't have a relationship with Christ

  154. and are still at odds with God.

  155. In fact,

  156. called enemies of God

  157. and under his judgment.

  158. A very chilling verse in John 3,

  159. right after the famous John 3.16.

  160. John 3.36,

  161. whoever believes in the Son

  162. has eternal life.

  163. Whoever does not obey the Son

  164. will not see life,

  165. but the wrath of God remains on him.

  166. And so,

  167. point number one,

  168. so I gave you the resolution

  169. about following Christ,

  170. but point number one,

  171. there's just two points today,

  172. and we'll spend,

  173. I've done my best to keep you in Luke.

  174. So,

  175. besides looking at one other place.

  176. But,

  177. point one,

  178. is that Christ demands

  179. that you weigh the cost

  180. of following him.

  181. Christ demands

  182. that you weigh the cost

  183. of following him.

  184. And,

  185. we're going to start in Luke 9,

  186. go to verse 57.

  187. Alright,

  188. and in the context here,

  189. Jesus,

  190. it says earlier,

  191. has set his face

  192. towards Jerusalem.

  193. He's making

  194. a final journey

  195. towards Jerusalem

  196. where he knows

  197. he will be arrested,

  198. beaten,

  199. and crucified

  200. to save men

  201. from their sins.

  202. And so,

  203. along the way,

  204. Jesus encounters

  205. three different men

  206. who all claim

  207. and have interest

  208. in wanting to be

  209. his disciple.

  210. Right?

  211. And they're,

  212. what they say

  213. doesn't seem unreasonable

  214. on its face,

  215. but then Jesus responds

  216. to them

  217. kind of surprisingly.

  218. Let's look at

  219. verse 57.

  220. As they were going

  221. along the road,

  222. someone said to him,

  223. to Jesus,

  224. I will follow you

  225. wherever you go.

  226. And Jesus said to him,

  227. foxes have holes,

  228. the birds of the air

  229. have nests,

  230. but the Son of Man

  231. has nowhere

  232. to lay his head.

  233. To another he said,

  234. follow me.

  235. But he said,

  236. Lord,

  237. let me first go

  238. and bury my father.

  239. And Jesus said to him,

  240. leave the dead

  241. to bury their own dead,

  242. but as for you,

  243. go and proclaim

  244. the kingdom of God.

  245. Yet another said,

  246. I will follow you,

  247. Lord,

  248. but first,

  249. let me say farewell

  250. to those who are at home.

  251. And Jesus said to him,

  252. no one

  253. who puts his hand

  254. to the plow

  255. and looks back

  256. is fit

  257. for the kingdom

  258. of God.

  259. So,

  260. why does Jesus

  261. actually call them

  262. to weigh the cost here?

  263. Right?

  264. Why does he

  265. tend to drive them away?

  266. As far as we know,

  267. these men turned away.

  268. We never hear about them again,

  269. never heard from them

  270. after this.

  271. And,

  272. what I want to

  273. throw forward to you

  274. is like in your

  275. evangelism

  276. and your sharing

  277. of the good news

  278. with unbelievers,

  279. I tend to get to a point

  280. where I've met

  281. with people several times

  282. and I've gone over

  283. the foundational

  284. gospel message

  285. with them.

  286. and when they get

  287. to that point

  288. and they say,

  289. yeah,

  290. like I'm in,

  291. I'm there,

  292. I believe it.

  293. I then kind of cringe

  294. and go,

  295. okay,

  296. let's look at Luke 9,

  297. let's look at Luke 14,

  298. let's look at Matthew 10

  299. and I hope you know

  300. what I'm saying

  301. when I say this,

  302. but I try to talk them

  303. out of following Jesus

  304. after that.

  305. And,

  306. not what you do

  307. if you want to grow

  308. a successful ministry

  309. and have a lot of people

  310. come around.

  311. But in fact,

  312. this is exactly

  313. what Jesus did

  314. when he got too popular

  315. and he would turn around

  316. and say,

  317. hey,

  318. listen guys,

  319. listen,

  320. this is serious.

  321. I'm not playing games.

  322. I'm not here for your fun

  323. and entertainment

  324. and to give you prosperity.

  325. So,

  326. at first glance,

  327. Christ seems to be

  328. a little unreasonable,

  329. but a closer study

  330. of the passage

  331. might help us

  332. unpack what's going on.

  333. and he looks straight

  334. through their words

  335. and goes after

  336. the idols of their heart.

  337. He chooses to sift

  338. at those things.

  339. And all of them

  340. refused to obey Jesus

  341. immediately

  342. when he said,

  343. you know,

  344. follow me.

  345. This proved,

  346. really,

  347. that they did not

  348. really believe

  349. who Jesus was.

  350. Okay?

  351. So,

  352. it's not like

  353. they had this genuine

  354. faith in Christ

  355. and he's saying,

  356. no,

  357. not you,

  358. go away.

  359. He's basically revealing

  360. they don't really

  361. believe who he is.

  362. That's like

  363. what's happening

  364. right here.

  365. He's exposing that.

  366. And so,

  367. the first man,

  368. Matthew,

  369. in Matthew 8,

  370. 19,

  371. also tells this story

  372. and he says

  373. that he was a scribe.

  374. Alright?

  375. And so,

  376. this scribe

  377. made a very bold claim.

  378. I will follow you

  379. wherever you go.

  380. That's a huge claim

  381. for anybody to make,

  382. right?

  383. Very bold.

  384. But we know

  385. based on how Jesus

  386. responds to the man

  387. that he's looking

  388. for something else.

  389. And often,

  390. in this time,

  391. just like today,

  392. you would find

  393. an influential person,

  394. an influential teacher

  395. and attach yourself

  396. to that person

  397. in order that

  398. as they continue

  399. to prosper,

  400. you would kind of

  401. rise up with them.

  402. That's how you do it,

  403. right?

  404. Especially in the business world.

  405. And so,

  406. this guy really

  407. saw Jesus

  408. as a way

  409. of personal advancement

  410. in society

  411. and probably

  412. a means

  413. of comfort

  414. and security,

  415. right?

  416. And Jesus basically said,

  417. look,

  418. if that's what you're

  419. looking for,

  420. I'm not it.

  421. Go away.

  422. I'm not here

  423. to make you comfortable.

  424. Even foxes

  425. have places to go.

  426. I do not.

  427. And so,

  428. we know

  429. just based on

  430. Jesus' response

  431. what this guy

  432. was actually looking for.

  433. But rather,

  434. the Christian life

  435. is not one of comfort,

  436. but as we're talking about,

  437. suffering,

  438. going against

  439. the ways of this world,

  440. persecution even.

  441. And so,

  442. this man considered

  443. his earthly comfort

  444. and status

  445. more important

  446. than actually being

  447. redeemed,

  448. right?

  449. Have you ever seen

  450. people

  451. confess to be followers

  452. of Jesus,

  453. but yet in time

  454. it just revealed

  455. over time

  456. that they actually

  457. were trusting in Jesus

  458. for some other reason?

  459. Like to get them

  460. somewhere else,

  461. to give them

  462. something that they wanted,

  463. claiming to be believers.

  464. So,

  465. the second man,

  466. very tricky here,

  467. right?

  468. The second man,

  469. he said,

  470. let me go and bury my father.

  471. I'll follow you,

  472. but let me first go

  473. and bury my father.

  474. So,

  475. it seems like

  476. an honorable request.

  477. And Jesus isn't

  478. attacking that idea

  479. of honoring

  480. your father

  481. and your mother

  482. because we know

  483. elsewhere in the Gospels

  484. Christ defends

  485. the commandment

  486. to honor your father

  487. and your mother

  488. against those

  489. who really

  490. weren't doing that.

  491. But,

  492. with this statement,

  493. let me go and bury my father,

  494. it did not even

  495. necessarily mean

  496. that his father

  497. was dead yet,

  498. for one.

  499. So,

  500. meaning that he was

  501. waiting for him

  502. to pass away.

  503. And the phrase,

  504. I must bury my father,

  505. was a common figure

  506. of speech,

  507. which could also mean,

  508. let me wait

  509. for my inheritance.

  510. Like,

  511. let my father

  512. pass away

  513. and then let me

  514. get my inheritance

  515. and then I'll

  516. follow you.

  517. That's just what

  518. this really

  519. could mean.

  520. And again,

  521. Jesus isn't

  522. going against

  523. the commandment.

  524. He just basically

  525. said,

  526. look,

  527. this is more

  528. important.

  529. What I'm asking

  530. you to do

  531. is more important

  532. than waiting

  533. for your

  534. inheritance.

  535. Right?

  536. It could reveal

  537. that the man

  538. really desired

  539. money and title

  540. that he would

  541. receive

  542. over the call

  543. to follow

  544. the Messiah.

  545. Right?

  546. So,

  547. again,

  548. we know

  549. these things

  550. just based

  551. on how

  552. Jesus responds

  553. to them.

  554. We know

  555. he's not

  556. attacking the

  557. commandment

  558. to honor

  559. your parents.

  560. So,

  561. very clearly,

  562. this guy

  563. had a different

  564. motive.

  565. So,

  566. thirdly,

  567. the third man,

  568. he basically

  569. says,

  570. let me say

  571. farewell to those

  572. at home.

  573. Let me go

  574. home,

  575. kiss everybody

  576. goodbye,

  577. wrap up my

  578. business,

  579. and then I'll

  580. follow you.

  581. Of all the

  582. requests,

  583. this seems

  584. the most

  585. reasonable,

  586. right?

  587. Like,

  588. it seems

  589. like,

  590. sure,

  591. Jesus would

  592. surely allow

  593. them to go

  594. and do that.

  595. So,

  596. what's the

  597. problem?

  598. Why does

  599. Jesus respond

  600. this way?

  601. It seems

  602. like kind

  603. of harsh.

  604. So,

  605. please hold

  606. your hand

  607. or your

  608. bookmark

  609. in Luke,

  610. but look

  611. really quickly.

  612. This is the

  613. only other

  614. place I want

  615. you to turn,

  616. but look at

  617. 1 Kings

  618. really quickly.

  619. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  620. chapter 19,

  621. and you'll

  622. see some

  623. very scary

  624. parallels

  625. in this

  626. text,

  627. but this

  628. is when

  629. Elisha

  630. was about

  631. to be

  632. taken up

  633. into heaven

  634. and he

  635. was passing

  636. on his

  637. mantle as

  638. prophet to

  639. Elisha.

  640. Alright?

  641. And look

  642. at 1 Kings

    1 Kings 19:19

  643. 19,

  644. verse 19,

  645. now,

  646. just think

  647. about how

  648. Jesus responded

  649. to that third

  650. man and then

  651. think about

  652. this passage.

  653. Alright?

  654. So,

  655. he departed

  656. from there

  657. and found

  658. Elisha,

  659. the son

  660. of Japhat,

  661. who was

  662. plowing with

  663. twelve yoke

  664. of oxen

  665. in front of

  666. him,

  667. and he

  668. was with

  669. the twelve.

  670. Elijah

  671. passed by

  672. him and

  673. cast his

  674. cloak upon

  675. him.

  676. Symbolic.

  677. And he

  678. left the

  679. oxen and

  680. ran after

  681. Elijah and

  682. said,

  683. now listen

  684. to this,

  685. let me

  686. kiss my

  687. father and

  688. mother and

  689. then I

  690. will follow

  691. you.

  692. See the

  693. connection?

  694. And he

  695. said to

  696. him,

  697. go back

  698. again for

  699. what have

  700. I done

  701. to you?

  702. And he

  703. returned from

  704. following him,

  705. took the

  706. yoke of

  707. oxen and

  708. sacrificed them

  709. and boiled

  710. their flesh

  711. with the

  712. yokes of

  713. oxen and

  714. gave it to

  715. the people

  716. and they

  717. ate.

  718. Then he

  719. arose and

  720. went after

  721. Elijah and

  722. assisted him.

  723. So,

  724. we'll stop

  725. there.

  726. So,

  727. what's amazing

  728. is Elijah

  729. grants that

  730. request.

  731. Sure,

  732. go home,

  733. kiss your

  734. mother and

  735. your father

  736. goodbye.

  737. But,

  738. why did

  739. Jesus refuse

  740. to do it?

  741. What's the

  742. difference?

  743. Well,

  744. the difference

  745. can be seen

  746. in what

  747. Elisha

  748. actually does

  749. when he

  750. goes home.

  751. He immediately

  752. returns home,

  753. says for a while

  754. to his parents,

  755. then he takes

  756. all the oxen,

  757. and oxen are

  758. huge.

  759. I saw one at

  760. a fair a few

  761. weeks ago.

  762. They're like

  763. a truck.

  764. They're like,

  765. you know,

  766. Oregon Trail

  767. doesn't do

  768. them justice.

  769. So,

  770. like,

  771. a bunch

  772. of oxen.

  773. So,

  774. he sacrifices

  775. them and

  776. gives it

  777. to the

  778. Lord.

  779. Right?

  780. Here you

  781. go,

  782. Lord.

  783. symbolic

  784. acts of

  785. severing

  786. your old

  787. lifestyle

  788. to start

  789. a new

  790. one.

  791. You see

  792. that?

  793. He had

  794. nothing to

  795. go back

  796. to.

  797. He destroyed

  798. everything.

  799. He had

  800. nothing to

  801. return to.

  802. So,

  803. this proved,

  804. right,

  805. that Elisha

  806. abandoning his

  807. home and his

  808. livelihood proved

  809. that his true

  810. passion and

  811. devotion was to

  812. follow the

  813. Lord's call

  814. on his

  815. life.

  816. So,

  817. Elijah didn't

  818. mind if he

  819. temporarily

  820. returned home

  821. to do

  822. something like

  823. that.

  824. However,

  825. we see clearly

  826. that Jesus

  827. perceived something

  828. very different

  829. about this

  830. third guy.

  831. And this is a

  832. hard one.

  833. He basically

  834. said,

  835. you may come

  836. after me for

  837. a little while

  838. and you may

  839. follow me for

  840. a little while,

  841. but you're

  842. always going

  843. to be looking

  844. over your

  845. shoulder.

  846. You're always

  847. going to be

  848. going,

  849. looking back

  850. at home,

  851. looking back

  852. at your

  853. family.

  854. And at

  855. some point,

  856. you're going

  857. to miss

  858. them so

  859. much that

  860. you will

  861. leave me

  862. and you

  863. will go

  864. home.

  865. And most

  866. people don't

  867. plow around

  868. here.

  869. I've done

  870. some hay

  871. cutting and

  872. hay raking,

  873. not the best

  874. thing to do

  875. if you have

  876. a respiratory

  877. problem.

  878. people.

  879. But like

  880. just keeping

  881. your rows

  882. straight.

  883. But if

  884. you're

  885. plowing a

  886. straight line

  887. and you're

  888. always going

  889. like this,

  890. you tend

  891. to do

  892. this,

  893. and so

  894. you don't

  895. really

  896. accomplish

  897. the goal.

  898. And so

  899. Jesus clearly

  900. perceived that

  901. this man would

  902. leave him and

  903. return back to

  904. his family.

  905. So he goes,

  906. no.

  907. Right?

  908. So,

  909. in case that's

  910. not enough,

  911. you can go

  912. back to Luke

  913. now.

  914. Go back to

  915. Luke.

  916. Luke.

  917. In case

  918. that's not

  919. enough,

  920. Jesus goes

  921. on to

  922. expound more

  923. a little

  924. later.

  925. Like,

  926. look at

  927. Luke 14.

  928. Let's go to

  929. Luke 14 a

  930. few chapters

  931. later,

  932. and he

  933. returns to

  934. this idea

  935. of discipleship.

  936. So if that's

  937. not enough,

  938. again,

  939. like Jesus

  940. basically says,

  941. you have to

  942. renounce all

  943. you have in

  944. order to be

  945. my disciple.

  946. So this is

  947. his final

  948. journey to

  949. Jerusalem.

  950. Think about

  951. this.

  952. He's not like

  953. the most

  954. upbeat.

  955. He's like

  956. feeling lonely.

  957. He's feeling

  958. the weight of

  959. what's going

  960. to go on.

  961. And he's

  962. being followed

  963. by these

  964. crowds of

  965. people that

  966. basically just

  967. want him to

  968. do cool

  969. tricks.

  970. Right?

  971. A lot of

  972. them.

  973. And he

  974. just,

  975. it's one of

  976. those moments

  977. where he

  978. has it.

  979. You know,

  980. he's had it

  981. and he goes,

  982. hey,

  983. listen to me.

  984. Listen very

  985. carefully.

  986. He boldly

  987. turns around

  988. and confronts

  989. this crowd,

  990. this sort of

  991. flirting with

  992. him,

  993. if you want to

  994. put it that

  995. way,

  996. and warns

  997. them of the

  998. heavy weight

  999. and cost it

  1000. means to be

  1001. his disciple.

  1002. Don't be

  1003. quick to

  1004. become my

  1005. follower.

  1006. And he

  1007. uses two

  1008. examples of

  1009. building,

  1010. one building,

  1011. and one going

  1012. to war to

  1013. illustrate this.

  1014. Luke 14,

    Luke 14:25

  1015. verse 25.

  1016. Great crowds

  1017. accompanied him

  1018. and he

  1019. turned and

  1020. said to

  1021. them,

  1022. here it

  1023. is,

  1024. if anyone

  1025. comes to

  1026. me and

  1027. does not

  1028. hate his

  1029. own father,

  1030. mother,

  1031. wife,

  1032. children,

  1033. brothers,

  1034. sisters,

  1035. yes,

  1036. even his

  1037. own life,

  1038. he cannot

  1039. be my

  1040. disciple.

  1041. Whoever

  1042. does not

  1043. bear his

  1044. own cross

  1045. and come

  1046. after me

  1047. cannot be

  1048. my

  1049. disciple.

  1050. For which

  1051. of you

  1052. desiring to

  1053. build a

  1054. tower does

  1055. not first

  1056. sit down

  1057. and count

  1058. the cost

  1059. whether he

  1060. has enough

  1061. to complete

  1062. it?

  1063. Otherwise,

  1064. when he's

  1065. laid a

  1066. foundation

  1067. and he's

  1068. not able

  1069. to finish,

  1070. all see

  1071. it and

  1072. begin to

  1073. mock him,

  1074. saying,

  1075. this man

  1076. began to

  1077. build and

  1078. was not

  1079. able to

  1080. finish.

  1081. Or what

  1082. king,

  1083. going out

  1084. to encounter

  1085. another

  1086. king in

  1087. war,

  1088. will not

  1089. sit down

  1090. first and

  1091. deliberate

  1092. whether he

  1093. is able

  1094. with 10,000

  1095. to meet

  1096. him who

  1097. comes against

  1098. him with

  1099. 20,000?

  1100. And if

  1101. not,

  1102. while the

  1103. other is

  1104. yet a

  1105. great way

  1106. off,

  1107. he sends

  1108. a delegation

  1109. and asks

  1110. for terms

  1111. of peace,

  1112. so therefore,

  1113. any one

  1114. of you,

  1115. so personal,

  1116. any one

  1117. of you

  1118. who does

  1119. not renounce

  1120. all he has

  1121. cannot be

  1122. my disciple.

  1123. Gosh.

  1124. So this

  1125. isn't like

  1126. seeker friendly,

  1127. this isn't

  1128. like he's

  1129. really wanting

  1130. to just build

  1131. a cool church

  1132. and have a lot

  1133. of people,

  1134. he's like,

  1135. no.

  1136. Like if you

  1137. don't love me

  1138. more than

  1139. anything else,

  1140. even your own

  1141. life,

  1142. you cannot

  1143. be my disciple.

  1144. That's a

  1145. condition.

  1146. Again,

  1147. it's not

  1148. replacing our

  1149. gospel message

  1150. of grace

  1151. and our

  1152. gospel message

  1153. of faith

  1154. alone in

  1155. Christ.

  1156. It basically

  1157. is just

  1158. saying,

  1159. you know

  1160. what,

  1161. if you

  1162. truly believe

  1163. who I

  1164. am,

  1165. none of

  1166. this will

  1167. be a

  1168. problem.

  1169. But as

  1170. Westerners,

  1171. as Americans,

  1172. we read this

  1173. and it just

  1174. doesn't quite

  1175. ring true,

  1176. but in

  1177. Jesus'

  1178. world,

  1179. the people

  1180. he's talking

  1181. to,

  1182. for them

  1183. to become

  1184. his disciple

  1185. could mean

  1186. death.

  1187. It could

  1188. mean separation

  1189. from family.

  1190. Many years

  1191. ago,

  1192. there might

  1193. be two people

  1194. here who

  1195. remember this,

  1196. Nathan being

  1197. one of them.

  1198. I had a

  1199. friend from

  1200. Kyrgyzstan

  1201. come and

  1202. visit and I

  1203. got like a

  1204. large crowd

  1205. of college

  1206. students,

  1207. probably like

  1208. 80 to 100

  1209. in here,

  1210. to hear him

  1211. talk.

  1212. It's a

  1213. buddy of

  1214. mine,

  1215. his name's

  1216. Ossal.

  1217. And he

  1218. basically said,

  1219. hey,

  1220. in America,

  1221. when people

  1222. want to become

  1223. Christians,

  1224. they walk

  1225. the aisle,

  1226. they shake

  1227. the pastor's

  1228. hand,

  1229. they pray a

  1230. prayer,

  1231. they're baptized,

  1232. and then they

  1233. are expected

  1234. to kind of

  1235. show up on

  1236. Sunday and

  1237. be a pretty

  1238. good person

  1239. and give to

  1240. the church,

  1241. just outwardly,

  1242. right?

  1243. But he's like,

  1244. in Asia,

  1245. when you become

  1246. a Christian,

  1247. first your

  1248. family rejects

  1249. you and

  1250. kicks you

  1251. out.

  1252. Secondly,

  1253. your community

  1254. will ostracize

  1255. you.

  1256. And then

  1257. thirdly,

  1258. the government

  1259. will either

  1260. not allow

  1261. you to

  1262. work,

  1263. or they

  1264. will imprison

  1265. you or

  1266. kill you.

  1267. And then

  1268. he said,

  1269. and if

  1270. someone we've

  1271. been sharing

  1272. Christ with

  1273. does all

  1274. that,

  1275. we know

  1276. they're a

  1277. true Christian.

  1278. So,

  1279. even today,

  1280. this is true

  1281. for many

  1282. places in

  1283. the world.

  1284. And I

  1285. don't think

  1286. that Jesus

  1287. would say to

  1288. us,

  1289. hey,

  1290. Americans,

  1291. that's not

  1292. you,

  1293. so be

  1294. thankful you

  1295. live in the

  1296. land of the

  1297. free and the

  1298. home of the

  1299. brave.

  1300. I think

  1301. he would

  1302. say,

  1303. no,

  1304. I demand

  1305. that same

  1306. loyalty

  1307. from you.

  1308. And that's

  1309. chilling.

  1310. But firstly,

  1311. we see in

  1312. Luke 14

  1313. right here,

  1314. a superior

  1315. love to

  1316. family and

  1317. self,

  1318. right?

  1319. He doesn't

  1320. say,

  1321. the term

  1322. hating here

  1323. doesn't mean

  1324. malice,

  1325. evil,

  1326. towards your

  1327. family or

  1328. your friends.

  1329. love to

  1330. love to

  1331. love to

  1332. love to

  1333. love to

  1334. love to

  1335. love to

  1336. love to

  1337. love to

  1338. love to

  1339. love to

  1340. love to

  1341. me.

  1342. You should

  1343. cultivate such

  1344. a love and

  1345. devotion to

  1346. me that all

  1347. other loves

  1348. in comparison

  1349. look like

  1350. hate.

  1351. Right?

  1352. So,

  1353. very similarly

  1354. in Matthew's

  1355. Gospel,

  1356. you don't have

  1357. to turn

  1358. here,

  1359. but very

  1360. similar

  1361. passage about

  1362. the cost of

  1363. following Jesus.

  1364. Jesus said,

  1365. do not think

  1366. that I have

  1367. come to

  1368. bring peace.

  1369. I have not

  1370. come to

  1371. bring peace,

  1372. but the

  1373. sword.

  1374. The person's

  1375. enemies will

  1376. be those of

  1377. his own

  1378. household.

  1379. So,

  1380. meaning,

  1381. that Christ's

  1382. real presence

  1383. in your life

  1384. will cause

  1385. division.

  1386. It will cause

  1387. people to

  1388. not want to

  1389. be around

  1390. you.

  1391. I lost a

  1392. lot of my

  1393. friends when

  1394. I first

  1395. became a

  1396. believer,

  1397. just because

  1398. I didn't

  1399. want to

  1400. shoot guns,

  1401. hunt,

  1402. fish,

  1403. and blow

  1404. things up

  1405. every day

  1406. anymore.

  1407. That was

  1408. like the

  1409. context of

  1410. our friendship,

  1411. plus a few

  1412. other things.

  1413. But,

  1414. some remained

  1415. friends,

  1416. but I basically

  1417. just said,

  1418. look,

  1419. I'm done

  1420. with that.

  1421. Look,

  1422. I'm not

  1423. living for

  1424. this anymore.

  1425. I just

  1426. exposed that

  1427. they weren't

  1428. really my

  1429. friends,

  1430. sort of,

  1431. to begin

  1432. with.

  1433. But,

  1434. a superior

  1435. love to

  1436. our family

  1437. and our

  1438. friends,

  1439. like it

  1440. could cost

  1441. you that.

  1442. Some of

  1443. you have

  1444. had family

  1445. issues because

  1446. you've been

  1447. loyal to

  1448. Jesus.

  1449. You've

  1450. said,

  1451. I'm not

  1452. going to

  1453. compromise on

  1454. what Christ

  1455. said.

  1456. I'm sorry.

  1457. And they've

  1458. responded harshly

  1459. to you.

  1460. They don't

  1461. understand why

  1462. you think the

  1463. way you think.

  1464. Right?

  1465. But secondly,

  1466. he wraps that

  1467. up by saying

  1468. that you have

  1469. to love me

  1470. more than

  1471. even your

  1472. own life.

  1473. and he

  1474. calls them

  1475. to bear

  1476. their cross.

  1477. Earlier

  1478. in Luke

  1479. 9,

  1480. if you want

  1481. to go back

  1482. to Luke

  1483. 9,

  1484. and then

  1485. we'll,

  1486. you know,

  1487. you don't

  1488. have to

  1489. turn anywhere

  1490. else.

  1491. We'll go

  1492. back to

  1493. Luke 9

  1494. really quickly.

  1495. More of a

  1496. selection of

  1497. scriptures today

  1498. from Luke.

  1499. But Luke

  1500. 9,

  1501. if you go

  1502. to verse

  1503. 23,

  1504. a little

  1505. earlier in

  1506. the chapter,

  1507. okay,

  1508. he says,

  1509. if any

  1510. one of

  1511. you would

  1512. come after

  1513. me,

  1514. let him

  1515. deny

  1516. himself,

  1517. take up

  1518. his cross

  1519. daily

  1520. and follow

  1521. me.

  1522. For whoever

  1523. would save

  1524. his life

  1525. would lose

  1526. it,

  1527. and whoever

  1528. loses his

  1529. life for

  1530. my sake

  1531. will save

  1532. it.

  1533. For what

  1534. does it

  1535. profit a

  1536. man if

  1537. he gains

  1538. the whole

  1539. world and

  1540. loses or

  1541. forfeits

  1542. himself or

  1543. his soul

  1544. in some

  1545. translations?

  1546. Alright,

  1547. so take

  1548. up your

  1549. cross and

  1550. not wear a

  1551. cross necklace.

  1552. It is an

  1553. invitation to

  1554. come and

  1555. suffer and

  1556. die.

  1557. I have

  1558. no problem

  1559. with cross

  1560. necklaces.

  1561. Just saying,

  1562. it is an

  1563. invitation,

  1564. it is not

  1565. a pretty

  1566. thing at

  1567. all.

  1568. One would

  1569. literally be

  1570. saying farewell

  1571. to this

  1572. life,

  1573. to their

  1574. family,

  1575. to their

  1576. plans,

  1577. and like

  1578. saying,

  1579. yep,

  1580. I could

  1581. die.

  1582. And in

  1583. the world

  1584. we are

  1585. told to

  1586. constantly,

  1587. we are

  1588. told to

  1589. protect

  1590. yourself,

  1591. promote

  1592. yourself,

  1593. preserve

  1594. yourself,

  1595. entertain

  1596. yourself,

  1597. and comfort

  1598. yourself,

  1599. Christ says,

  1600. slay

  1601. yourself.

  1602. Slay

  1603. yourself.

  1604. Not to

  1605. just abstain

  1606. from certain

  1607. things,

  1608. but to

  1609. relinquish

  1610. control of

  1611. your life.

  1612. Right?

  1613. A willingness

  1614. to follow

  1615. and serve

  1616. Him,

  1617. and to

  1618. keep His

  1619. commandments,

  1620. to suffer,

  1621. and maybe

  1622. even perhaps

  1623. die for

  1624. Him.

  1625. But think

  1626. about it

  1627. this way,

  1628. I am not

  1629. trying to

  1630. put words

  1631. in Jesus'

  1632. mouth,

  1633. so you

  1634. can check

  1635. me

  1636. here,

  1637. but

  1638. paraphrasing,

  1639. if He

  1640. said to

  1641. you,

  1642. if you

  1643. knew

  1644. that coming

  1645. after me

  1646. and being

  1647. my disciple

  1648. meant that

  1649. it could

  1650. cost you

  1651. your life,

  1652. would you

  1653. do it

  1654. anyway?

  1655. Are you

  1656. that desperate

  1657. for me?

  1658. Am I

  1659. that glorious

  1660. to you?

  1661. Would you

  1662. be willing

  1663. to give

  1664. up your

  1665. life here

  1666. to have

  1667. eternal

  1668. life later?

  1669. Would you

  1670. be willing

  1671. to?

  1672. You might

  1673. not,

  1674. but it

  1675. could happen.

  1676. Would you

  1677. still come?

  1678. Were you

  1679. that desperate?

  1680. Would you

  1681. give it

  1682. up?

  1683. So it's

  1684. not to

  1685. be a

  1686. believer,

  1687. not just

  1688. a call

  1689. to learn.

  1690. I love

  1691. theology,

  1692. I love

  1693. doctrine,

  1694. it's

  1695. awesome,

  1696. I'll

  1697. nerd out

  1698. with you

  1699. all day,

  1700. but becoming

  1701. a follower

  1702. of Jesus

  1703. is not

  1704. about just

  1705. learning some

  1706. cool things

  1707. and dogma

  1708. to make

  1709. our lives

  1710. better,

  1711. it's a

  1712. call to

  1713. a person.

  1714. And

  1715. Bonhoeffer,

  1716. Dietrich

  1717. Bonhoeffer,

  1718. a lot of

  1719. us know

  1720. that name,

  1721. he wrote

  1722. a book,

  1723. Cost of

  1724. Discipleship,

  1725. and after

  1726. it was

  1727. published in

  1728. the U.S.,

  1729. he had a

  1730. choice,

  1731. they said,

  1732. here in

  1733. America,

  1734. hey,

  1735. why don't

  1736. you stay

  1737. here?

  1738. Stay here,

  1739. you'll have a

  1740. successful

  1741. ministry,

  1742. a lot of

  1743. people will

  1744. listen to you

  1745. and trust you

  1746. and you can

  1747. have a great

  1748. ministry here

  1749. in life,

  1750. don't go back

  1751. to Germany,

  1752. right?

  1753. the Third

  1754. Reich is

  1755. firing things

  1756. up,

  1757. and he

  1758. basically

  1759. just said,

  1760. I'm paraphrasing,

  1761. like,

  1762. if I don't

  1763. go back

  1764. to Germany,

  1765. everything I

  1766. wrote in

  1767. this book

  1768. is a

  1769. lie.

  1770. And so

  1771. he goes

  1772. back,

  1773. you know,

  1774. and we all

  1775. know the

  1776. story,

  1777. he eventually

  1778. is martyred

  1779. by the

  1780. Nazis.

  1781. But he

  1782. said,

  1783. salvation

  1784. is free.

  1785. Thank

  1786. goodness,

  1787. right?

  1788. But

  1789. discipleship

  1790. will cost

  1791. you your

  1792. life.

  1793. And so

  1794. salvation

  1795. costs nothing,

  1796. but discipleship

  1797. will cost

  1798. us everything.

  1799. And it's

  1800. a lifetime.

  1801. Delinquished

  1802. control of

  1803. all things.

  1804. If I had

  1805. to pull

  1806. in a passage

  1807. that Paul

  1808. wrote that

  1809. goes alongside

  1810. this,

  1811. right?

  1812. Talking about

  1813. the death

  1814. of Jesus,

  1815. he says,

  1816. he died

  1817. for all

  1818. so that

  1819. all those

  1820. who live

  1821. would no

  1822. longer live

  1823. for themselves,

  1824. but for

  1825. him who

  1826. died and

  1827. was raised

  1828. for their

  1829. sake.

  1830. Second

  1831. Corinthians

  1832. 5.15,

  1833. that we

  1834. would no

  1835. longer live

  1836. for ourselves,

  1837. but live

  1838. for him

  1839. who saved

  1840. us.

  1841. So if you

  1842. are a

  1843. believer,

  1844. have you

  1845. taken the

  1846. command of

  1847. Christ to

  1848. deny yourself

  1849. and take up

  1850. your cross

  1851. daily,

  1852. seriously?

  1853. Or is it

  1854. just floating

  1855. around?

  1856. I confess

  1857. there's many

  1858. days I'm

  1859. just sort

  1860. of getting

  1861. by and I'm

  1862. not really

  1863. thinking about

  1864. what it

  1865. means to

  1866. follow Jesus

  1867. daily in

  1868. the context

  1869. that I

  1870. am,

  1871. denying

  1872. myself,

  1873. denying

  1874. myself

  1875. comfort,

  1876. sleep,

  1877. food,

  1878. whatever else,

  1879. things that

  1880. I want

  1881. for the sake

  1882. of other

  1883. people,

  1884. and to

  1885. give those

  1886. over fully

  1887. to Christ.

  1888. Has your

  1889. life reflected

  1890. a love and

  1891. devotion to

  1892. Christ that

  1893. appears funny

  1894. and different

  1895. to the fallen

  1896. world around

  1897. you?

  1898. Already you

  1899. just blend

  1900. in and

  1901. nothing looks

  1902. different.

  1903. It's something

  1904. to think

  1905. about.

  1906. So all

  1907. of that

  1908. was point

  1909. number one.

  1910. Christ

  1911. demands that

  1912. you weigh

  1913. the cost.

  1914. And then

  1915. wrapping it

  1916. up,

  1917. point number

  1918. two,

  1919. this is the

  1920. beautiful part.

  1921. Christ is

  1922. worth losing

  1923. everything to

  1924. gain.

  1925. Right?

  1926. Christ is

  1927. worth losing

  1928. everything to

  1929. gain.

  1930. Right?

  1931. The reality

  1932. is that

  1933. Christ alone

  1934. is worthy

  1935. of our lives.

  1936. It overrides

  1937. everything

  1938. else.

  1939. No human

  1940. relationship,

  1941. no employment,

  1942. no hobby,

  1943. or anything

  1944. else you

  1945. have compares

  1946. to the

  1947. greatness of

  1948. knowing Jesus

  1949. Christ our

  1950. Lord.

  1951. All things can

  1952. be taken away

  1953. from you.

  1954. And one of

  1955. my questions

  1956. I asked guys

  1957. I'm sharing

  1958. the gospel was

  1959. like, hey

  1960. man, what are

  1961. you living

  1962. for?

  1963. And they'll

  1964. say, fill

  1965. in the blank,

  1966. you know,

  1967. money,

  1968. comfortable

  1969. life, to

  1970. be a good

  1971. athlete, to

  1972. get married

  1973. and have a

  1974. nice place

  1975. to live

  1976. and a good

  1977. job, to

  1978. have good

  1979. health.

  1980. That's a big

  1981. one.

  1982. Especially when

  1983. you're talking

  1984. to college

  1985. students because

  1986. they think

  1987. that they're

  1988. invincible.

  1989. And then

  1990. you just

  1991. say, can

  1992. you lose

  1993. all of that?

  1994. Is all

  1995. that permanent?

  1996. And they'll

  1997. say, probably

  1998. not.

  1999. I can lose

  2000. all of that.

  2001. And say, well,

  2002. it's not worth

  2003. giving your life

  2004. for then.

  2005. Like, you

  2006. will lose

  2007. it all.

  2008. Like, Christ

  2009. is the only

  2010. thing that

  2011. cannot be

  2012. taken away

  2013. from you.

  2014. Period.

  2015. And Jesus

  2016. says later

  2017. on, and

  2018. Mark and

  2019. I will

  2020. paraphrase some

  2021. of this, but

  2022. the disciples

  2023. come to him

  2024. and they're

  2025. kind of

  2026. whining, you

  2027. know, like

  2028. they do

  2029. sometimes, like

  2030. we do

  2031. sometimes.

  2032. Like, Lord,

  2033. we've sacrificed

  2034. and we've left

  2035. so much to

  2036. follow you.

  2037. And he

  2038. basically is

  2039. like, really?

  2040. Have you?

  2041. Have you

  2042. sacrificed

  2043. everything to

  2044. follow me?

  2045. Jesus responds

  2046. to them.

  2047. Jesus said,

  2048. Truly I

  2049. say to you,

  2050. there is no

  2051. one who

  2052. has left

  2053. house or

  2054. brothers or

  2055. sisters or

  2056. mothers or

  2057. sacrificed family

  2058. lands for

  2059. the sake of

  2060. the gospel who

  2061. will not

  2062. receive a

  2063. hundredfold now

  2064. in this life

  2065. houses,

  2066. brothers,

  2067. sisters,

  2068. mothers,

  2069. children,

  2070. and lands

  2071. with persecutions

  2072. and in the

  2073. age to come

  2074. eternal life.

  2075. So what he

  2076. basically says

  2077. is like,

  2078. whatever you

  2079. think you're

  2080. sacrificing,

  2081. when you

  2082. compare it to

  2083. what you're

  2084. gaining in

  2085. me,

  2086. it is no

  2087. comparison.

  2088. Like, you

  2089. will not

  2090. even be able

  2091. to speak of

  2092. sacrificing

  2093. anything if

  2094. you truly

  2095. believe what

  2096. I'm giving

  2097. you.

  2098. It's like

  2099. giving up

  2100. garbage to

  2101. get gold.

  2102. You know,

  2103. you're like,

  2104. I sacrificed

  2105. my garbage.

  2106. You know,

  2107. it's not like

  2108. that at all.

  2109. We gain

  2110. everything in

  2111. Christ.

  2112. You know,

  2113. and so I

  2114. just want to

  2115. pose this

  2116. thought to

  2117. you.

  2118. We've had

  2119. it easy.

  2120. We've had

  2121. it easy for

  2122. a long

  2123. time.

  2124. Being a

  2125. big history

  2126. guy, I

  2127. can tell you

  2128. that we've

  2129. lived in

  2130. the most

  2131. prosperous,

  2132. peaceful

  2133. stretch of

  2134. human history

  2135. ever.

  2136. And it

  2137. may, if

  2138. God shows

  2139. mercy,

  2140. continue that

  2141. way for a

  2142. little longer.

  2143. I'm not

  2144. at all a

  2145. doomsdayist

  2146. or hey,

  2147. the end

  2148. is nigh.

  2149. But if

  2150. you ask

  2151. people,

  2152. anybody in

  2153. this room

  2154. that's older

  2155. than 40,

  2156. would some

  2157. of the stuff

  2158. that's going

  2159. on today be

  2160. happening here?

  2161. People go,

  2162. oh, no

  2163. way.

  2164. Like, men

  2165. calling themselves

  2166. women, women

  2167. calling themselves

  2168. men, men

  2169. getting pregnant,

  2170. call people by

  2171. pronouns.

  2172. If you try

  2173. to tell your

  2174. kid that there

  2175. are any other

  2176. gender than

  2177. what they

  2178. want to be,

  2179. we're going

  2180. to throw you

  2181. in prison,

  2182. that's actual

  2183. stuff going

  2184. on in our

  2185. country today.

  2186. And that

  2187. blows our

  2188. minds.

  2189. And we may

  2190. be sheltered

  2191. from it a

  2192. little bit

  2193. just because

  2194. of the

  2195. culture we

  2196. live in.

  2197. But the

  2198. stuff that

  2199. we hear

  2200. today, we're

  2201. going to

  2202. have to just

  2203. kind of

  2204. kindly say,

  2205. no.

  2206. Because

  2207. thus says

  2208. the Lord.

  2209. Not a

  2210. conservative

  2211. American

  2212. response,

  2213. but a

  2214. deeply

  2215. rooted,

  2216. gospel-centered

  2217. conviction about

  2218. what God

  2219. says.

  2220. That's what

  2221. we will

  2222. suffer for.

  2223. Most of

  2224. the time

  2225. when Scripture

  2226. talks about

  2227. suffering and

  2228. persecution,

  2229. it's not

  2230. just because you

  2231. get sick and

  2232. ill.

  2233. Of course,

  2234. that counts as

  2235. a trial.

  2236. But it's about

  2237. suffering for

  2238. Christ's sake.

  2239. Right?

  2240. Saying no to

  2241. the world

  2242. around us.

  2243. And we

  2244. have to

  2245. prepare ourselves

  2246. for that.

  2247. Have some

  2248. deeply rooted

  2249. theology and

  2250. what it means

  2251. to follow

  2252. Jesus and

  2253. say, Lord,

  2254. help me.

  2255. Right?

  2256. It's been

  2257. easy for us.

  2258. Right?

  2259. And there's

  2260. tests that

  2261. could be

  2262. coming.

  2263. I don't

  2264. know for

  2265. sure, but

  2266. it seems to

  2267. go that

  2268. way.

  2269. And then

  2270. lastly, I

  2271. just want to

  2272. affirm just

  2273. two things

  2274. in closing.

  2275. Like, we

  2276. fail, okay?

  2277. We fail at

  2278. our devotion

  2279. to follow

  2280. Christ, okay?

  2281. So this

  2282. isn't a call

  2283. to be

  2284. perfect.

  2285. It's not a

  2286. call to get

  2287. this all

  2288. figured out

  2289. in a week.

  2290. But with

  2291. God's help,

  2292. we can push

  2293. forward, we

  2294. can progress,

  2295. we can be

  2296. faithful disciples

  2297. carrying our

  2298. cross daily.

  2299. But when we

  2300. fail, remember

  2301. that our

  2302. identity and

  2303. our salvation

  2304. lie secure

  2305. in Christ so

  2306. that we

  2307. strive in

  2308. His love,

  2309. not to gain

  2310. His love,

  2311. okay?

  2312. It's really

  2313. huge to

  2314. remember that.

  2315. But then

  2316. lastly, again,

  2317. willpower alone

  2318. won't be able

  2319. to help you

  2320. fulfill this

  2321. resolution to

  2322. follow Jesus.

  2323. And we

  2324. need God's

  2325. grace, His

  2326. strength to

  2327. help us.

  2328. Christ is our

  2329. sufficiency, and

  2330. He can sustain

  2331. that life of

  2332. holiness and

  2333. devotion to

  2334. following Jesus.

  2335. If you have

  2336. on your

  2337. bulletin a

  2338. quote by

  2339. Edwards on

  2340. here, go

  2341. back to

  2342. Edwards real

  2343. quick,

  2344. start with

  2345. that and

  2346. end with

  2347. that.

  2348. But your

  2349. historic

  2350. quotation by

  2351. Edwards, he

  2352. says,

  2353. being sensible

  2354. that I am

  2355. unable to do

  2356. anything without

  2357. God's help,

  2358. I do humbly

  2359. entreat him

  2360. by His grace

  2361. to enable me

  2362. to keep these

  2363. resolutions so

  2364. far as they

  2365. agree with

  2366. His will for

  2367. Christ's sake.

  2368. That is a

  2369. great way to

  2370. say this, like

  2371. Lord, help

  2372. us to do

  2373. that.

  2374. Close

  2375. me in

  2376. prayer.

  2377. Let's

  2378. close

  2379. me in

  2380. prayer.

  2381. me in

  2382. me in
