  1. Good morning. Open up your Bibles to Psalm 51.

  2. So in case you thought you got rid of me last week, I'm back.

  3. ! Nathan called and just wasn't feeling well.

  4. And at the time I was feeling good and I actually kind of had a rough night.

  5. I've got a wheeze in my chest.

  6. Y'all know what that's about, but if you hear a little bagpiper in here,

  7. you know, throughout the sermon, that's what's going on.

  8. Struggling physically just a little bit, but spirit's good.

  9. I've been really encouraged this morning with our singing and our gathering.

  10. And so after you've been doing this for quite a while,

  11. you develop several sermons that are kind of like your go-tos if something happens like this.

  12. But the problem is the longer you've been here, like you actually have used them before.

  13. So I looked on our website, and apparently the last time I did this was in 2014.

  14. So there's a lot of new faces here since then.

  15. So I thought it'd be good to go back to it.

  16. And I think some of the college students may have heard it a couple years ago.

  17. But I'm looking at it with fresh eyes today and to visit a topic that every believer should be aware of

  18. and be practicing weekly, if not daily.

  19. And that is the subject of repentance.

  20. And a word that a lot of people try to omit from their vocabulary.

  21. And I know no other place, really, that I think exhibits what true repentance is than Psalm 51.

  22. So before we walk through it, I just want to talk about repentance just for a second, just define it for you,

  23. as well as maybe give us some context of what's going on in Psalm 51.

  24. But in short, just the word repent in the New Testament, it means to change one's mind for the better.

  25. So it's not just a change of behavior.

  26. It's a change in the way you think about things.

  27. It's like looking at sin, hating it, and by God's grace, resolving to forsake it and turn to Christ in faith.

  28. And it is a God-produced inward change of the heart that plays out outwardly in a change of action.

  29. And so there's just a few things to consider before we kind of get into this.

  30. But some of you are familiar with Psalm 51.

  31. And I was just thinking, again, like we can't outgrow this sermon.

  32. Like the minute you think that you have no more need to understand repentance or practice repentance,

  33. we're kind of in a dangerous spot.

  34. And so this was written in the context of 2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  35. That's like the background.

  36. But instead of reading all that to you the whole time, you can go back and check it out later.

  37. But 2 Samuel 11 through 12, and this is about King David.

  38. And this is when he is at the height of his power, height of his blessing, at the tip top,

  39. which typically means, based on this story, that is a time when we need to be wary.

  40. We need to be aware like we're feeling very safe and secure,

  41. that we're doing very well spiritually.

  42. We're at the height because then temptation comes.

  43. And so in these chapters in 2 Samuel, what happens is King David,

  44. who we tend to think of only as the man after God's own heart, which is true.

  45. He was an astonishing man, a shepherd, a king, a warrior,

  46. one of my favorite Bible characters for sure.

  47. But I think apart from stories like this,

  48. we would be tempted to kind of idolize David as some sort of perfect man.

  49. And this shows you that he was definitely broken and in need of a Savior.

  50. So in these chapters, he commits the terrible act of adultery, murder, lying, and scandal.

  51. I mean, you just would never think.

  52. But again, he's at the height of his power and blessing from God.

  53. And so it starts the chapter by saying when the kings were out to war.

  54. So this was the time when they went out to wage war against their enemies.

  55. And David is not out there.

  56. He's staying in Jerusalem.

  57. So point number one really would be able just to think about is be where you should be.

  58. Don't be where you should not be.

  59. And so he should be out there with his men, with his army, waging war.

  60. But he's hanging out in Jerusalem.

  61. And so he steps out on his balcony and he sees a beautiful woman sunbathing, which is Bathsheba.

  62. And she is the wife of a noble warrior named Uriah, Uriah the Hittite.

  63. And so not a Jew by birth.

  64. He was a Gentile, but he must have at some point come to faith in the true God or he was a mercenary or something.

  65. But Hittites were known for their reputation for fighting.

  66. So this was his wife.

  67. And no one knows, but if she did this intentionally to catch David's eye, we don't know that.

  68. But she is on display.

  69. And so he walks out and he sees her and he lusts after her.

  70. And he calls her to his chamber.

  71. And he's the king.

  72. He can kind of do whatever he wants to do a lot of the time.

  73. And so eventually he sleeps with her and she goes away.

  74. And eventually comes back and says, hey, I'm pregnant with your child.

  75. And no kidding, he panics.

  76. He freaks out.

  77. Like a lot of us would in such a situation.

  78. And instead of going straight to God, he begins this scandal of lying and covering up.

  79. He intends to cover it up first by calling Uriah back from the battlefield and saying, hey, Uriah, like you've been doing a great job out there.

  80. Like come and sleep with your wife as a reward.

  81. And but he is such a honorable soldier.

  82. He refuses to do that.

  83. Like, how can I do that when my men are out there in the battlefield?

  84. And so that didn't work.

  85. And David is growing frustrated.

  86. So he says, well, I'll just into himself.

  87. I'll try to get him drunk.

  88. And then he can sleep with his wife.

  89. And then everything will be OK.

  90. But he that doesn't work either.

  91. And so this growing frustration and fear, David results to the great evil of having Uriah killed on the battlefield.

  92. It says, like, when he's up in the front of the line, draw back and let him die.

  93. So in essence, he's murdered by David.

  94. It was just through the means of the battlefield.

  95. Put him in a situation where he wouldn't survive it.

  96. And he did not survive it.

  97. So then David comes out and he he tries to put on this noble facade of like the husband, the noble Uriah is dead.

  98. And I can now marry his wife as a sign of of honor, kind of picking her up.

  99. And so that really wasn't what was happening, obviously.

  100. So he marries her and he he thinks everything is OK.

  101. Right.

  102. He he's he's survived.

  103. He's gotten away with the lie.

  104. His reputation is saved.

  105. Or so he thinks.

  106. Right.

  107. But often is the case.

  108. We are unaware of that.

  109. We very quickly forget.

  110. Proverbs 15, three.

  111. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  112. So eventually, God sends a prophet to Nathan or a prophet to David named Nathan.

  113. And he confronts him and he says he tells him this story.

  114. And he goes, hey, there was two men.

  115. One was a very wealthy man and he had many livestock, many herds.

  116. And this other man was his servant.

  117. And he had just one lamb that he loved and he cared for.

  118. And so the rich man had a visitor and to throw a party and to welcome that visitor.

  119. Instead of taking one of the many livestock he had, he took the servant's only favorite animal, the lamb that he had.

  120. And he killed it when he had all this other stuff.

  121. And David is outraged.

  122. He goes, surely that man deserves to die.

  123. And then Nathan, chillingly, just says to him, you're that man.

  124. You took, you had all this stuff and you took the only thing from this man, Uriah, and you committed a great evil.

  125. So little did he know, he's pronouncing judgment on himself.

  126. And so, out of David's mouth, according to Scripture, comes genuine repentance.

  127. Not just, oh no, I'm caught.

  128. I'm found out.

  129. I'm in trouble.

  130. I've got to figure out another way to hide.

  131. He just, he owns up to it.

  132. And what he says in 2 Samuel 12, verse 13, is I have sinned against the Lord.

    2 Samuel 12:13

  133. And Nathan said to David, the Lord, the Lord has put away your sins.

  134. And you shall not die.

  135. So mind-blowing, he confesses his sin genuinely.

  136. And out of Nathan's mouth comes the forgiveness from the Lord.

  137. So, I like to think of this, we don't exactly know how this came about.

  138. But if you look at like the little subtitle in your Bible over Psalm 51,

  139. it says, to the choir master, a psalm of David,

  140. when Nathan the prophet went to him after he had gone into Bathsheba.

  141. So, I like to think that after this encounter with Nathan happened,

  142. he got away by himself somewhere.

  143. Nathan, or excuse me, David went out into the wilderness.

  144. He went somewhere and got quiet, or just a quiet place.

  145. And he penned this psalm.

  146. And poured out his heart and soul to God in repentance and in prayer.

  147. And so, we're going to just walk through it.

  148. Just to save time, I'm just going to walk through it with you

  149. instead of reading it all and then going back over it again.

  150. And so, I'm going to just do this in the form of questions.

  151. But if I had to look at this psalm,

  152. one brother I heard that preached on this a long time ago,

  153. if he had to explain what this psalm was,

  154. he says that David's sin made him feel dirty,

  155. and he desires to be clean.

  156. David feels guilt.

  157. The guilt has made him sick,

  158. and he desires to be well.

  159. The disobedience made him lonely,

  160. and he desires relational reconciliation.

  161. And his rebellion made him fearful of God,

  162. but now he wants to be pardoned.

  163. That's kind of like what we see a lot in this particular psalm.

  164. So, the first question,

  165. we're going to just walk through it with questions,

  166. and eat it piece by piece.

  167. So, question number one is,

  168. how do we approach God for mercy and forgiveness?

  169. Okay?

  170. That's going to be seen in verses 1 and 2.

  171. And in this, we have something for our hearts and our minds to follow

  172. when we are seeking to repent of our sin

  173. and work through things with God.

  174. He says in verse 1,

  175. Have mercy on me, O God,

  176. according to your steadfast love,

  177. according to your abundant mercy,

  178. blot out my transgressions,

  179. wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

  180. and cleanse me from my sin.

  181. And so, I want you to notice this.

  182. He pleads with God to show him mercy and pardon and forgiveness,

  183. not because of what he's done.

  184. Right?

  185. Mercy is this undeserved thing only given to us by God.

  186. You can't earn mercy.

  187. You can't earn grace.

  188. By nature, it's undeserving.

  189. And so, why is this the case?

  190. Like, why is he approaching God this way?

  191. Because, one, David has no hope of God forgiving him

  192. according to his own righteousness,

  193. because clearly he doesn't have any.

  194. Look what he just did.

  195. So, he's not saying,

  196. Forgive me because I'm a great guy,

  197. and I've done so much for you.

  198. He just, he doesn't do that.

  199. He doesn't plead his case

  200. according to his own goodness,

  201. his own merit,

  202. but God's.

  203. You see that?

  204. According to your steadfast love,

  205. your abundant mercy,

  206. the multitude of your tender mercies,

  207. or your compassions.

  208. So, he recognizes he has no entitlement for God's favor,

  209. he deserves not life,

  210. but death.

  211. And he's,

  212. if we are ever to approach God,

  213. we have to be sensible that God

  214. doesn't have to forgive us.

  215. We're not owed forgiveness.

  216. We're not owed mercy and grace.

  217. And so, therefore,

  218. David appeals to God in this manner,

  219. because he knows it's in the nature of God

  220. to be forgiving.

  221. He knows it's in the nature of God

  222. to show mercy,

  223. to forgive,

  224. pardon,

  225. and heal.

  226. So, he taps into that,

  227. like, God,

  228. I know that you are a forgiving,

  229. merciful God.

  230. And so,

  231. that's how he approaches it,

  232. not according to his own righteousness,

  233. but God's,

  234. right,

  235. in God's love,

  236. God's tender mercies.

  237. Look at these verses,

  238. and look at the terms that he uses

  239. to explain the crime that he committed.

  240. He says,

  241. first,

  242. transgression.

  243. You see that?

  244. That is a deliberate,

  245. premeditated crossing of the line,

  246. a willful act of disobedience.

  247. He knew he shouldn't do it,

  248. and he did it anyway.

  249. Then he uses the word iniquity,

  250. which is sort of a perverting

  251. or a twisting of something

  252. that is good and true.

  253. Right?

  254. He's corrupted goodness.

  255. And then, of course,

  256. he used the term sin,

  257. the most familiar to us,

  258. the missing of the mark

  259. of what God intended.

  260. And then he even calls it evil,

  261. right?

  262. This dark, terrible, awful thing.

  263. So, he's fully recognizing

  264. that he has committed

  265. a great crime against God.

  266. He's not making any excuses for it.

  267. And so,

  268. then look at

  269. what he's asking God to do

  270. corresponding to those particular crimes.

  271. Right?

  272. All words depicting spiritual restoration

  273. that only God can do.

  274. First, he says,

  275. to blot out.

  276. Right?

  277. Blot out my transgressions.

  278. That means to wipe out,

  279. to obliterate.

  280. And back in the ancient times,

  281. they use papyrus

  282. if you could afford it.

  283. And it was valuable.

  284. And what they would do

  285. is they would reuse it

  286. by wiping off previous writing

  287. and then writing something else

  288. on top of it.

  289. So, he's saying,

  290. blot out the record

  291. of this awful sin I've committed.

  292. Like this transgression.

  293. Wipe it away

  294. as if it never happened.

  295. Blot it out.

  296. Then he used the term wash.

  297. To wash by treading out.

  298. This refreshing feeling, right,

  299. of your dirty and filthy sin

  300. makes us feel that way.

  301. So, he's saying,

  302. cleanse me.

  303. Wash me.

  304. Cleanse me

  305. of my sin.

  306. Right?

  307. Which means to purify

  308. and make whole.

  309. And he's saying,

  310. all of this, Lord,

  311. do all of this

  312. only because of your love

  313. and kindness towards me.

  314. And because of your mercy.

  315. Not because I deserve it.

  316. And so,

  317. those are the redemptive response.

  318. Like, blot it out.

  319. Wash me.

  320. Cleanse me.

  321. The stuff that we all desire.

  322. That gives you question number two now.

  323. Which is,

  324. what is the true confession of sin?

  325. Okay?

  326. See this in verses 3-5.

  327. David goes on.

  328. He says,

  329. For I know my transgressions

  330. and my sin is ever before me

  331. against you,

  332. you only,

  333. have I sinned against

  334. and done what is evil

  335. in your sight

  336. so that you may be justified

  337. in your words

  338. and blameless in your judgment.

  339. Behold,

  340. I was brought forth in iniquity

  341. and in sin

  342. did my mother conceive me.

  343. Alright?

  344. So, he recognizes right out of the gate

  345. that sin is ever present with them.

  346. He says,

  347. I know my transgressions

  348. and my sin is ever before me.

  349. He's humbly acknowledging

  350. what he's done.

  351. What I did was wrong.

  352. What I did was evil

  353. and wicked.

  354. And it's staring at me in the face.

  355. Have you ever noticed that

  356. when you commit sin

  357. and you just kind of

  358. try to brush it under the rug

  359. and go about your day

  360. and how it just has this tendency

  361. to stand there

  362. and just stare at you

  363. like,

  364. hey, I'm not gone.

  365. I'm still here.

  366. That's what his sin is doing to him

  367. day and night.

  368. And so,

  369. he recognizes that

  370. that his sin

  371. is ever before him.

  372. And then,

  373. this is very critical.

  374. Right?

  375. He takes full responsibility

  376. for his sin.

  377. He doesn't blame Bathsheba.

  378. He doesn't blame

  379. any circumstances going on.

  380. He owns up to it.

  381. Alright?

  382. And that's important

  383. because we,

  384. some of you who

  385. confess sin to each other

  386. and pray to each other,

  387. we tend to want to

  388. soften the blow

  389. by saying,

  390. well, I messed up.

  391. Or,

  392. I didn't do so good

  393. this week.

  394. And we use terms

  395. to kind of like

  396. make it sound better

  397. than it is.

  398. And according to God's Word,

  399. according to this psalm,

  400. it's like,

  401. no,

  402. call it what it is.

  403. You committed

  404. a heinous act

  405. of adultery.

  406. Call sin what it is

  407. and own up to it.

  408. And don't try to

  409. soften the blow.

  410. And I think

  411. this next part

  412. is very critical

  413. if you see

  414. in these verses,

  415. especially verse 4,

  416. this is very important.

  417. David could have said,

  418. I tragically

  419. have sinned

  420. against Bathsheba.

  421. I've sinned

  422. against Uriah.

  423. I had him killed.

  424. I've sinned

  425. against the nation

  426. that I'm supposed

  427. to be leading.

  428. And he would have been

  429. true

  430. in saying those things.

  431. But he doesn't.

  432. He confesses

  433. to God

  434. against you

  435. and you only

  436. have I sinned against

  437. and done what is evil

  438. in your sight.

  439. So why does he say that?

  440. Because all sin

  441. is ultimately

  442. against God.

  443. All of it is.

  444. It doesn't

  445. just

  446. we sin against people

  447. and then we sin

  448. against God

  449. separately.

  450. Like all of it

  451. goes back to him.

  452. It's all

  453. rebellion

  454. against him.

  455. And as he said

  456. to Nathan

  457. in 2 Samuel

  458. 12,

  459. 13,

  460. I have sinned

  461. against the Lord.

  462. That's like what

  463. he proclaimed.

  464. So sin does

  465. great harm to us.

  466. It does great harm

  467. to others.

  468. At the end of the day,

  469. it dishonors

  470. our Creator.

  471. And so

  472. when I sin,

  473. I'm saying to God

  474. in that moment,

  475. I don't trust you.

  476. I don't believe

  477. that you're good.

  478. I don't believe

  479. that you're wise.

  480. I'm going to take

  481. another path.

  482. That's like what

  483. we do

  484. every time

  485. that we sin.

  486. And we don't

  487. believe in His goodness.

  488. So,

  489. this is very important.

  490. Repentance is not

  491. just feeling bad.

  492. You hear me?

  493. Like repentance

  494. is not just

  495. feeling bad

  496. about what you did

  497. and feeling guilty.

  498. Why?

  499. Because even unbelievers,

  500. people who don't know Christ,

  501. feel guilty

  502. about things

  503. that they've done.

  504. So what's the difference?

  505. What's the difference?

  506. I only have

  507. two places

  508. for you to turn

  509. outside of Psalm 51.

  510. So,

  511. thank me later.

  512. But one of them

  513. is 2 Corinthians.

  514. Hold your hand

  515. in Psalm 51.

  516. Look at 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 7:9

  517. chapter 7

  518. verse 9.

  519. And so Paul

  520. talks about

  521. repentance

  522. this way

  523. and he says

  524. there's a godly sorrow

  525. and a worldly sorrow.

  526. And

  527. kind of picking up

  528. on this

  529. theme of repentance.

  530. So 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 7:9

  531. chapter 7

  532. verse 9

  533. Paul says,

  534. As it is,

  535. I rejoice

  536. not because

  537. you were grieved

  538. about sin,

  539. but because

  540. you were grieved

  541. into repenting.

  542. for you felt

  543. a godly grief

  544. so that

  545. you suffered

  546. no loss

  547. through us.

  548. For godly grief

  549. produces repentance

  550. that leads to salvation

  551. without regret,

  552. whereas worldly grief

  553. produces death.

  554. So he clearly says here

  555. there are two kinds

  556. of grief.

  557. For the believer

  558. there is a godly sorrow.

  559. It's what we're seeing

  560. here in Psalm 51.

  561. Like,

  562. I have sinned

  563. against God,

  564. I have hurt Him,

  565. I have insulted Him,

  566. and I hate

  567. what I have done

  568. to Him ultimately.

  569. And worldly sorrow

  570. is man-centered.

  571. You just kind of feel

  572. bad about what you did,

  573. but you don't really

  574. feel any remorse

  575. for sinning

  576. against God Himself.

  577. You just hate

  578. the consequences

  579. of your sin.

  580. You hate

  581. what it does to you,

  582. but then it just

  583. sort of falls

  584. short

  585. right there

  586. and doesn't carry on.

  587. But Paul says

  588. that godly grief

  589. or godly sorrow

  590. will lead to life

  591. as where worldly sorrow

  592. will lead to death.

  593. So repentance

  594. isn't just feeling bad

  595. about what you did.

  596. It's about,

  597. remember,

  598. about a change

  599. of the mind

  600. that leads to

  601. a change of action.

  602. Right?

  603. So,

  604. go back to Psalm 51.

  605. And if you notice

  606. in Psalm 51

  607. he also says,

  608. Behold,

  609. I was brought forth

  610. in iniquity

  611. and in sin

  612. did my mother

  613. conceive me.

  614. Now,

  615. he is not at all

  616. playing the victim.

  617. We live in a victimized

  618. culture.

  619. Stuff's just happening

  620. to me

  621. and nothing's my fault.

  622. He really is just

  623. saying by this,

  624. like God,

  625. I am weak.

  626. I am helpless.

  627. I don't know anything else

  628. but sin.

  629. From day one,

  630. that's all I've known

  631. is sin.

  632. This is one of those

  633. original sin texts.

  634. Like,

  635. in sin

  636. was I conceived.

  637. Right?

  638. We were born,

  639. all of us,

  640. in a state of sin

  641. and spiritual death.

  642. Our understanding

  643. was darkened

  644. and our hearts

  645. were corrupted

  646. by evil.

  647. So David

  648. implores

  649. that sad reality

  650. as an argument

  651. for God

  652. to show him mercy.

  653. This is all

  654. I've ever known.

  655. I've only known

  656. sin

  657. from the beginning.

  658. Have mercy on me.

  659. Forgive me.

  660. Let's get into

  661. our third question.

  662. Alright?

  663. How do we plea

  664. for forgiveness

  665. and restoration?

  666. Alright?

  667. This is

  668. starting in verse 6.

  669. David says,

  670. Behold,

  671. you delight in truth

  672. and the inward being

  673. and you teach me

  674. wisdom and the secret heart.

  675. Purge me with hyssop

  676. and I shall be clean.

  677. Wash me.

  678. I shall be whiter

  679. than snow.

  680. Let me hear joy

  681. and gladness.

  682. Let the bones

  683. that you have broken

  684. rejoice.

  685. Hide your face

  686. from my sins

  687. and blot out

  688. my iniquities.

  689. Create in me

  690. a clean heart,

  691. O God.

  692. Renew me

  693. with the right spirit

  694. within me.

  695. Cast me not away

  696. from your presence

  697. and take not

  698. your Holy Spirit

  699. from me.

  700. Restore to me

  701. the joy

  702. of your salvation

  703. and uphold me

  704. with a willing spirit.

  705. And so,

  706. in these verses

  707. we really see

  708. how to plea

  709. for forgiveness

  710. and restoration

  711. to God.

  712. God desires

  713. to not just

  714. save him

  715. but to change him.

  716. To change him

  717. from the inside out.

  718. The deepest places

  719. of his heart.

  720. He's pleading with God,

  721. Change me here.

  722. I don't just want

  723. to do better.

  724. I want to change.

  725. I don't just want

  726. to continue

  727. down this same road.

  728. And it's this picture

  729. of this God

  730. going from room

  731. to room

  732. in his heart

  733. just cleaning him out

  734. and renewing him.

  735. So, sin is defilement.

  736. You see that?

  737. He says,

  738. Purge me

  739. and wash me

  740. with hyssop.

  741. Hyssop is a plant

  742. of the mint family.

  743. It's like a cluster

  744. of yellow flowers

  745. and it was used

  746. to sprinkle the blood

  747. on the doorposts

  748. during the Passover.

  749. The Israelites

  750. were in Egypt

  751. and it's symbolically

  752. this idea of cleansing.

  753. And he says,

  754. Wash me

  755. whiter than snow.

  756. Clean,

  757. pure,

  758. unadulterated

  759. and beautiful.

  760. Wash me.

  761. Cleanse me.

  762. Whiter than snow.

  763. And then,

  764. keep in mind

  765. that when we sin

  766. it's like deafness.

  767. We can't really hear

  768. the voice of the Lord

  769. and says,

  770. Make me hear.

  771. He wanted God

  772. to allow him

  773. to hear joy

  774. and gladness again

  775. even in the midst

  776. of what he's going through.

  777. Alright,

  778. so,

  779. sin also

  780. is disgrace

  781. and separation

  782. from God.

  783. Look at verse 9.

  784. He says,

  785. Hide your face

  786. from my sin.

  787. So,

  788. notice sin.

  789. Right?

  790. And,

  791. hide my sin,

  792. Lord,

  793. but not me.

  794. And,

  795. so,

  796. to the Jews,

  797. to the Hebrews

  798. of old,

  799. to see God's face

  800. is counted

  801. as the greatest blessing.

  802. There's no greater blessing

  803. than to see God's face

  804. because it means

  805. favor,

  806. love,

  807. fellowship,

  808. and no greater curse

  809. than for God

  810. to hide his face

  811. from you,

  812. which means

  813. judgment,

  814. separation.

  815. and so,

  816. he pleads that.

  817. Hide your face

  818. from my sin,

  819. but not me.

  820. And,

  821. you see again,

  822. right,

  823. that ultimately,

  824. David desires

  825. fellowship with God

  826. himself.

  827. He doesn't just want

  828. to get off the hook

  829. and not get in trouble.

  830. He wants that

  831. relationship

  832. restored,

  833. that fellowship

  834. with God himself

  835. where he says

  836. in verse 11,

  837. Cast me not away

  838. from your presence

  839. and take not

  840. your Holy Spirit

  841. from me.

  842. A quick note on that.

  843. The Holy Spirit

  844. is how God manifested

  845. his presence to us

  846. and in the Old Testament

  847. he empowered prophets,

  848. kings,

  849. and warriors

  850. to accomplish

  851. his mission

  852. by empowering them

  853. with the Holy Spirit.

  854. But it could be

  855. taken away from them

  856. in the Old Testament,

  857. in the Old Covenant.

  858. Example of that

  859. is Samson.

  860. But closer to home

  861. to David,

  862. he saw it happen

  863. to Saul,

  864. did he not?

  865. He saw Saul go mad.

  866. Saul was living in,

  867. God had empowered him

  868. by the Spirit

  869. to accomplish

  870. certain goals

  871. and Saul continued

  872. to sin and rebel

  873. and not do what

  874. God told him to do

  875. and so he withdrew

  876. that presence

  877. of the Spirit.

  878. So he is like,

  879. oh Lord,

  880. please don't do that

  881. to me.

  882. Like,

  883. please don't take away

  884. your Holy Spirit

  885. from me.

  886. So,

  887. so we see here though

  888. that a lot of people

  889. want to be

  890. delivered by the

  891. consequences of their sins.

  892. Like,

  893. I don't want to get

  894. in trouble.

  895. I don't want to be

  896. found out.

  897. That's the first thing

  898. that comes to my mind.

  899. How about you?

  900. Like,

  901. I don't want to be caught.

  902. I don't want people

  903. to know.

  904. And,

  905. but we see here

  906. that he doesn't

  907. just desire

  908. to be delivered

  909. from the consequences

  910. of his sin.

  911. He wants fellowship

  912. with God himself.

  913. Right?

  914. And that's scary.

  915. A question for us

  916. to ask ourselves.

  917. I'll spare you

  918. this really long quote

  919. that I have,

  920. but Jonathan Edwards

  921. just basically said,

  922. you may love deliverance

  923. but hate the deliverer.

  924. The inclination

  925. of your own will

  926. goes no further

  927. than self

  928. and it never

  929. reaches Christ.

  930. You are willing

  931. not to be miserable.

  932. That is,

  933. you love yourself.

  934. And there,

  935. your will

  936. and your choice

  937. terminate.

  938. It is a vain

  939. pretense

  940. and delusion

  941. to say or think

  942. that you are willing

  943. to accept Christ.

  944. And in that quote,

  945. he basically is saying

  946. that a lot of us

  947. just want to be

  948. delivered from the consequences.

  949. But we don't really

  950. want God.

  951. Right?

  952. We don't really have

  953. a desire for him.

  954. But for those of us

  955. who are truly saved,

  956. truly born again,

  957. we may have some things

  958. we have to work through,

  959. but ultimately

  960. we land in this position

  961. where we're like,

  962. we just want God.

  963. Like,

  964. I just want,

  965. I'm tired of feeling

  966. at odds with him.

  967. Right?

  968. And sin is spiritually

  969. depressing.

  970. It causes misery.

  971. And that's why

  972. he says in verse 12,

  973. restore to me

  974. the joy

  975. of your salvation.

  976. And then don't let it

  977. stop there.

  978. Give me the grace,

  979. empower me,

  980. uphold me with a willing

  981. or noble spirit.

  982. But give me this

  983. perseverance

  984. to continue

  985. to trust you,

  986. to follow you,

  987. and to have joy in you.

  988. And

  989. some of you may think

  990. that

  991. there's no way

  992. that God

  993. could change me.

  994. Maybe you forgive me,

  995. but like,

  996. I just don't feel like

  997. I can change.

  998. It feels hopeless.

  999. It's no use.

  1000. I've heard that

1001. from some of your mouths

  1002. before.

  1003. And I confess

1004. I've felt that way too.

  1005. Like,

  1006. I just don't want to just

  1007. stop committing the sin.

  1008. I want to change.

1009. I don't want to do this again.

  1010. I want to,

1011. I want God to change

  1012. my behavior

  1013. by changing my heart

  1014. first

  1015. and convincing me

  1016. that this is wrong

  1017. and evil

  1018. and that His way

  1019. is better.

1020. So if you feel hopeless,

  1021. I may give you

1022. something to hold on to here.

  1023. Notice in these verses,

  1024. He says,

  1025. create

  1026. in me

  1027. a clean heart

  1028. or a new heart.

  1029. Alright?

  1030. Think about that word

  1031. create

  1032. in the Bible.

1033. Where else have you heard

  1034. that word

  1035. create?

  1036. about Genesis 1-1.

  1037. In the heavens

  1038. God,

  1039. or in the beginning,

  1040. God created

  1041. the heavens

  1042. and the earth.

  1043. Does that encourage you?

  1044. Like God is,

  1045. David is calling upon

  1046. that same power

  1047. that created the universe,

  1048. visible and invisible,

  1049. spiritual and physical,

1050. to give him a new heart.

  1051. Like so,

  1052. the same God

  1053. that made all things

  1054. can speak new life

  1055. into you and me

1056. and give us new hearts.

  1057. So that's a huge power

  1058. behind that ability

  1059. to change you.

  1060. So God's hand

  1061. is not so short

  1062. that He cannot save

1063. and that He cannot change.

  1064. And thirdly,

  1065. third question,

  1066. what is the response?

  1067. In Christ,

  1068. what is our response?

  1069. Look at verse 13.

  1070. He says,

  1071. then I will teach

  1072. transgressors your ways

  1073. and sinners

  1074. will return to you.

  1075. Deliver me

  1076. from blood guiltiness,

  1077. O God.

1078. O God of my salvation

  1079. and my tongue

  1080. will sing aloud

  1081. of your righteousness.

  1082. O Lord,

  1083. open my lips

  1084. and my mouth

  1085. to declare your praise.

  1086. For you will not

  1087. delight in sacrifice

  1088. or otherwise

  1089. I would give it.

1090. You will not be pleased

  1091. with burnt offering.

  1092. The sacrifices of God

  1093. are a broken spirit,

  1094. a broken

  1095. and contrite heart.

  1096. O God,

  1097. you will not despise.

  1098. Do good to Zion

  1099. in your good pleasure.

  1100. Build up the walls

  1101. of Jerusalem.

  1102. Then you will delight

  1103. in right sacrifices

  1104. and burnt offerings

  1105. and whole burnt offerings.

1106. Then bulls will be offered

  1107. on your altar.

  1108. So,

  1109. while this is important

  1110. is there's,

  1111. whenever we sin,

1112. we kind of jump to,

  1113. by our nature sometimes,

  1114. jump to

  1115. the side of just

  1116. vain offerings.

  1117. Catholics.

  1118. And,

  1119. so back then,

  1120. right,

  1121. like,

  1122. people could just live

  1123. a very open,

  1124. sinful lifestyle,

  1125. they thought,

  1126. and then,

  1127. you know,

  1128. just center it up

1129. and do a bunch of stuff

1130. and then go to the temple,

  1131. make a sacrifice

  1132. and then like,

  1133. we're good.

  1134. And then go back

  1135. to the same lifestyle.

  1136. Today,

1137. some of you may think,

  1138. well,

  1139. I sin against God

1140. so I'll just go to church more.

  1141. I'll make sure

  1142. I take the Lord's Supper.

  1143. I read my Bible

  1144. a little longer.

  1145. I'll talk about Jesus

  1146. with somebody

  1147. and not really repentance.

1148. That's not what repentance is.

1149. It's spitting in the face

  1150. of Christ

  1151. is what it is.

  1152. And it's penance.

1153. It's like trying to make amends,

  1154. right,

1155. for in your own way

1156. to make yourself right with God

  1157. for what you did.

  1158. And true repentance

1159. doesn't involve that at all.

  1160. Right?

  1161. And David recognizes that.

  1162. He goes,

  1163. if all you wanted

1164. was just a burnt offering,

1165. I would go and do it.

1166. But that's not what you want.

  1167. You want my heart.

  1168. You want my broken,

  1169. sincere,

  1170. and contrite heart.

  1171. You want me.

  1172. And so,

  1173. that's why he says,

  1174. for you will not

  1175. delight in sacrifice,

1176. otherwise I would give it.

1177. And you won't be pleased

  1178. with burnt offerings.

  1179. And so,

  1180. just think about how

1181. insulting that is to God,

  1182. though,

1183. like how we tend to do

  1184. those sort of things.

  1185. it's like treating

  1186. your wife horribly

  1187. and abusing her

  1188. and then like saying,

  1189. hey,

  1190. I'll wash the dishes

  1191. and it'll be okay.

  1192. Just,

  1193. no,

  1194. that's not what God

  1195. desires.

  1196. And he is insulted

  1197. by attempts

  1198. to make amends

  1199. through our own works.

  1200. He really wants

1201. the heart of the worshiper.

  1202. He wants the motive

  1203. behind what we do.

  1204. And so,

  1205. what God truly desires,

  1206. verse 17,

  1207. the sacrifices of God

  1208. are a broken spirit,

1209. a broken and contrite heart.

  1210. So,

  1211. that is humble,

  1212. broken-hearted joy

  1213. in God.

1214. He wants us to be

  1215. shattered over our sin

1216. and to come to Him

  1217. for mercy.

  1218. So,

  1219. if God truly rules

  1220. our hearts,

  1221. He,

  1222. repentance is this change

  1223. in our minds,

1224. which leads to a change

  1225. of action outwardly.

  1226. Right?

  1227. It's a changing

  1228. from the inside out.

  1229. The danger is

  1230. a lot of us

  1231. focus on

  1232. mending our

  1233. hour behavior,

  1234. but the whole time

  1235. our hearts

1236. are not close to God.

  1237. We just think,

1238. if I just stop doing that

  1239. and stop doing that

1240. and I start doing this,

  1241. it'll be good.

  1242. And God's like,

  1243. no,

  1244. like,

  1245. your heart first

  1246. and then your actions

  1247. will follow.

  1248. God doesn't just care

  1249. about what we do,

1250. but why we do it.

  1251. Very important.

  1252. He desires our hearts

  1253. and our affections

  1254. to be fully His.

  1255. He wants

  1256. right actions

  1257. from right motives.

1258. Look at the next verse,

  1259. verse 13.

  1260. He goes,

  1261. then I'll teach

  1262. transgressors your ways

  1263. and sinners

  1264. will return to you.

  1265. In other words,

  1266. like,

  1267. I will tell others

  1268. of the danger

  1269. that sin causes

  1270. and then I'll also

  1271. tell them

  1272. of how merciful

  1273. and forgiving

  1274. you are.

  1275. Right?

  1276. Then he,

  1277. verse 14 and 15,

  1278. he talks about

  1279. delivering him

  1280. from the guilt

  1281. that he has

  1282. of committing murder,

  1283. essentially.

1284. Blood is on my hands,

  1285. is what he's saying.

  1286. You have the power

  1287. to do this,

  1288. O Lord,

1289. and I will make known

  1290. your salvation

  1291. to other people

  1292. like me

  1293. that are lost

  1294. and that are broken

  1295. and sinning against you.

  1296. So,

  1297. I love that though

  1298. because,

  1299. again,

  1300. he's not trying

  1301. to just make amends

  1302. through his actions.

  1303. He's saying,

  1304. like,

  1305. these things will follow,

  1306. these actions will follow

1307. once I am restored to you.

1308. I'm not going to do

  1309. these things first.

  1310. Like,

  1311. I want you first.

  1312. And then,

  1313. verse 19,

  1314. then you will delight

  1315. in right sacrifices

  1316. and burnt offerings

  1317. and whole burnt offerings

1318. and bulls will be offered

  1319. on the altar.

  1320. And then he ends

  1321. this prayer

  1322. with a blessing

  1323. for the nation,

  1324. a blessing

  1325. for the people

  1326. that he's supposed

1327. to be the king over.

  1328. Do good to us,

  1329. Lord.

  1330. I'm realizing that

1331. a lot of the stuff

  1332. that will happen

  1333. to the nation

  1334. is because of

  1335. what he does,

  1336. his actions.

  1337. So,

  1338. he prays for blessing

  1339. over the nation.

  1340. And so,

  1341. landing the plane here,

  1342. I just want you

  1343. to turn

  1344. to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  1345. Yep,

  1346. back in Romans.

  1347. So,

  1348. a quick question.

  1349. Some of you,

1350. maybe not all of you,

  1351. but some of you

  1352. are thinking a question

  1353. that bears answering.

  1354. And that is,

  1355. how could a holy

  1356. and just God

  1357. just pardon David

  1358. for such awful things?

  1359. Like,

  1360. can you imagine

  1361. a human judge

  1362. doing that?

  1363. Like,

  1364. being committed

  1365. of some kind

  1366. of awful crime

  1367. of murder

  1368. and adultery,

1369. and the judge just says,

  1370. hey,

  1371. you're forgiven,

  1372. go home.

1373. You would not put up

  1374. with that.

  1375. And,

  1376. so what's going on?

  1377. Like,

  1378. can you put yourself

  1379. in the position

  1380. of a family member

  1381. or a friend

  1382. of Bathsheba or Uriah,

  1383. and all they hear

  1384. from God is,

  1385. the Lord has taken

  1386. away your sin?

  1387. Like,

1388. how angry you would feel?

  1389. You'd feel outraged?

  1390. Like,

  1391. just turn them back

  1392. into society

  1393. and slap them

  1394. on the hand

  1395. for such an awful,

  1396. wicked,

  1397. heinous sin

  1398. that was committed?

  1399. So,

  1400. how,

  1401. as a righteous

  1402. and holy God,

  1403. how can that God

  1404. pardon sin?

  1405. Right?

  1406. Because by nature,

  1407. His holiness

  1408. demands punishment

  1409. for sin.

1410. And we get the answer.

  1411. Romans 3,

    Romans 3:22

  1412. verse 22.

  1413. It talks about

  1414. the righteousness

  1415. of God

  1416. through faith

  1417. in Jesus Christ

  1418. for all who believe.

  1419. Alright?

  1420. So we can have

  1421. righteousness

  1422. through faith

  1423. in Christ

  1424. for there is

  1425. no distinction

  1426. for all have

  1427. sinned

  1428. and fall short

  1429. of the glory

  1430. of God

  1431. and are justified

  1432. by His grace

  1433. as a gift

  1434. through the redemption

  1435. that is in Christ

  1436. Jesus

  1437. whom God put forward

  1438. as a propitiation

  1439. by His blood

  1440. to be received

  1441. with faith.

  1442. Alright,

  1443. we know that.

  1444. That is the gospel.

  1445. We put our faith

  1446. in Christ.

  1447. We throw ourselves

  1448. completely at His mercy.

  1449. We are saved

  1450. because of His grace

  1451. and we are redeemed

  1452. in Jesus Christ.

  1453. So here's the connection

  1454. to David though.

  1455. Alright?

  1456. This was to show

  1457. God's righteousness

  1458. because in His

  1459. divine forbearance

  1460. He had passed

  1461. over former sins.

  1462. It was to show

  1463. His righteousness

  1464. at the present time

1465. so that He might be

  1466. just

  1467. and the justifier

  1468. of the one

  1469. who has faith

  1470. in Jesus.

  1471. So,

  1472. how was God

  1473. able to pardon David?

  1474. Because He knew

  1475. that one day

  1476. He would slay

  1477. His own son

  1478. in David's place.

  1479. That His wrath

  1480. and judgment

  1481. that David deserved

  1482. was going to be

  1483. justly poured out

  1484. on His own son.

  1485. So,

  1486. David's sin

  1487. was punished

  1488. in Jesus Christ.

  1489. And Christ's righteousness

  1490. became David's righteousness.

  1491. The same thing

  1492. that happens to us

  1493. when we are saved.

  1494. That old question

  1495. that used to bother

  1496. so many people.

  1497. How are people

  1498. in the Old Testament

  1499. saved?

  1500. Like,

  1501. the same way.

  1502. Like,

  1503. they are saved

  1504. through faith.

  1505. in the coming Messiah.

  1506. They look forward

  1507. and we look back

  1508. to Christ.

  1509. So,

  1510. forgiveness of sin

  1511. in the Old Testament

  1512. anticipates

  1513. the sacrifice

  1514. of Christ

  1515. as the ultimate

  1516. sacrifice

  1517. for our sins.

  1518. So,

  1519. that wrath

  1520. that He justly deserved

  1521. was all poured out

  1522. on the perfect

  1523. Son of God.

  1524. So,

  1525. God could say,

  1526. hey,

  1527. I am a holy

  1528. and just God.

  1529. I did not

1530. just let that sin go.

  1531. I punished it

  1532. in my Son.

  1533. And so,

  1534. it was to show

  1535. His righteousness

  1536. because He had

  1537. passed it over

  1538. before.

  1539. So,

  1540. wherever we are today,

  1541. Jesus Christ

  1542. is the only way

1543. for us to be forgiven,

  1544. made right,

  1545. and be reconciled

  1546. in a fellowship

  1547. with God.

  1548. And what a blessing

  1549. we have

  1550. to know

  1551. that Jesus

  1552. has died

  1553. in our place

  1554. in the same way

  1555. that He did

  1556. for David.

  1557. and I pray

  1558. that wherever

  1559. you're at,

  1560. whatever sin

  1561. you have committed,

  1562. are committing,

  1563. or will commit,

  1564. you will turn

  1565. to faith

  1566. in Jesus

  1567. and repent

  1568. of that sin

  1569. and continue

  1570. to live life

  1571. as a believer,

  1572. following and trusting

  1573. in the perfect work

  1574. of Jesus.

  1575. So,

  1576. let's pray together

  1577. and we'll sing

  1578. some songs

  1579. in response.

  1580. Let's pray together

  1581. and we'll sing

  1582. a little bit

  1583. a little bit

  1584. of that sin

  1585. and ending

  1586. of that sin.

  1587. Let's pray together

  1588. and ending

  1589. a little bit

  1590. and ending

  1591. of that sin.
