  1. Well, good morning. It's nice to be back with you after being sick last week.

  2. I always hate to miss our fellowship, and I especially hate it when I am home doing nothing fun at all.

  3. I'm really glad to be here with you today.

  4. We don't have a primary text for today, which we normally do,

  5. but let me ask you to begin this morning by joining me in Psalm 115 and verse 3.

  6. Psalm 115 and verse 3.

  7. We're going to take a brief break from our study of Romans and take up a topic in series form.

  8. And I just have to tell you that the word series tastes bad on my tongue when spoken from the pulpit on the Lord's Day,

  9. as we most regularly consider the text verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book.

  10. We think this is the normative, healthiest way to approach the Bible.

  11. That said, sometimes a topic requires our particular attention,

  12. and so we labor to take it up faithfully and observe the scope of what the Bible teaches concerning it.

  13. But when we do, please be extra discerning.

  14. We want to be really careful at this point.

  15. Anytime we do theology systematically, we must be careful that we don't piecemeal the Scripture to bend it to our opinion,

  16. but rather that we are honest with it as we pull its teaching together.

  17. There are so many erroneous things.

  18. It's a cult start by taking up the Bible and approaching topics and doing it poorly.

  19. So let's not do that.

  20. Now the topic we're going to take up is the topic of authority.

  21. So we want to be especially careful not to become a cult after touching such a topic.

  22. We're going to do so primarily because at the close of this past year,

  23. a number of our members suggested that we teach on congregationalism.

  24. We are congregationalists as a church.

  25. This is a conviction that we have, and in some future weeks,

  26. I'll explain what that word means if you don't know.

  27. And it's important, though, for us to know what it means, what it doesn't mean,

  28. and to know what is the authority that a church holds together

  29. and what authority a church member holds individually.

  30. So this is what was asked of us, and we're going to do that,

  31. but we're going to approach it more broadly first.

  32. Secondarily, the topic of authority is a good topic to take up

  33. because we all have an authority issue.

  34. As Americans, it is just ingrained into us to have a sense of rogue individualism.

  35. Not all bad.

  36. Our experiment in order of liberty certainly has a sentiment

  37. that leans heavy on the liberty portion of that equation, right?

  38. wants to shy away from the ordered portion of it,

  39. really, really enjoys the liberty portion of it.

  40. Additionally, we have all seen authority abused.

  41. We have observed it.

  42. If you've not seen abused authority, come speak to me.

  43. I'll point out some cases to you from this past week.

  44. And many of us have experienced firsthand the abuse of authority.

  45. So there is reason to be suspect.

  46. To be really cautious when somebody says they have authority

  47. and press that authority on us.

  48. Beyond all of this, at our very core,

  49. apart from the redemptive work of Christ,

  50. we are rebellious people.

  51. It is our nature before Christ makes us new to be rebellious.

  52. You can trace briefly the biblical narrative backwards

  53. and see a New Testament church not heeding the words of the apostles.

  54. You see a Jewish people rejecting the teaching of Jesus

  55. and crucifying him for what they believe to be blasphemy.

  56. We see a nation turning away again and again and again from the prophets,

  57. not taking care with their temple worship as they have been commanded,

  58. neglecting to drive out the people from the promised land,

  59. refusing to fight for fear,

  60. desecrating holy places,

  61. and on and on and on and on.

  62. The Bible is a story of rebellious people

  63. with a loving God who redeems them.

  64. And all of this finds us beginning with our first parents,

  65. the original rebels who doubted God's good authority

  66. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  67. thought, surely God doesn't really know what's best.

  68. So we have an authority problem.

  69. But there is power and there is dominion in this world.

  70. We must first recognize that God has authority.

  71. God's authority is innate.

  72. That means that nobody gave it to him.

  73. It is his.

  74. He possesses it.

  75. And he is the final authority,

  76. the absolute authority.

  77. No one rules over him.

  78. God created all things with good, mighty words

  79. and has both the right and power to rule over his creation.

  80. Everything that we see and experience,

  81. God reigns over.

  82. Psalm 115 and verse 3 says,

  83. Our God is in the heavens.

  84. He does all that he pleases.

  85. Fully powerful to accomplish everything that he intends to accomplish.

  86. He has absolute and final authority.

  87. Another place in the text, Jeremiah chapter 32 and verse 17.

    Jeremiah 32 chapter mention

  88. This is from our scripture reading just a few weeks ago.

  89. Ah, Lord God,

  90. it is you who have made the heavens and the earth

  91. by your great power and by your outstretched arm.

  92. God determines what nations will exist and where they will exist.

  93. Acts chapter 17 and verse 26.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  94. He decides what king is to rule and when and where.

  95. Isaiah chapter 44 and verse 28.

    Isaiah 44 chapter mention

  96. Sometimes to the judgment of his people.

  97. He decides whether the purposes of a ruler will stand or fall.

  98. Psalm 33 verse 10 and 11.

    Psalms 33:10

  99. He even once determined that wicked people would take the life of his dear son

  100. so that we sinners might live.

  101. Acts chapter 2 verse 23 and 24.

    Acts 2:23

  102. God has authority over all the important events of human history

  103. but also over the lives of individual people.

  104. Just consider on this Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.

  105. He knits us together in our mother's wombs.

  106. Psalm 139 verse 13 through 16.

    Psalms 139:13–16

  107. Intimately involved.

  108. Authoritatively involved in our creation.

  109. He decides whether we will travel or stay home.

  110. James 4 verse 13 through 17.

    James 4:13–17

  111. As we have seen in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  112. and will consider further when we return to our study of Romans.

  113. God also exercises his authority to bring forgiveness and new life.

  114. Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8 through 10.

    Ephesians 2:8–10

  115. I'm grateful that God is authoritative over the salvation of my soul.

  116. God's authority is necessarily good

  117. because he is good.

  118. Too many people in this world feel that God's authority is an oppressive authority.

  119. But it's not, right?

  120. It's designed for good.

  121. Psalm 119 verse 68.

    Psalms 119:68

  122. God, you are good and do good.

  123. So whether you recognize it or not or care to yield to it or not,

  124. there is an absolute and final authority in this world.

  125. You can bow to it now, which I urge you to do because it is good.

  126. Turn from your rebellion.

  127. Turn to the perfect righteousness of Christ.

  128. Place your faith in his sacrificial death on your behalf

  129. and find the salvation of your soul.

  130. Bow to God's authority now.

  131. Come to him on his terms.

  132. Or, one day, you will be judged and you will be made to bow to his authority.

  133. Now, recognizing that God is the absolute and final authority,

  134. we do well to ask, but how is it that that authority is made effectual in the world?

  135. How is it that it's carried out in the world in which we live?

  136. Have we been left groping for what God requires of us?

  137. No, we have not.

  138. He has written, by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the pens of his servants, a book.

  139. And this book gives us all the answers we need to the lives ordered under God's authority.

  140. It's sufficient for that task.

  141. It has everything in it that we need.

  142. And it begins with a command.

  143. Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  144. Then God said,

  145. Let us make man in our image after our likeness,

  146. and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,

  147. and over the birds of the heavens,

  148. and over the livestock,

  149. and over all the earth,

  150. and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  151. As part of the creation mandate,

  152. we are made as people who image God in this world.

  153. And we do it specifically by having dominion,

  154. relegated authority over the world in which we live.

  155. And then more specifically, we see in Genesis chapter 2 and verse 15.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  156. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to keep it,

  157. or to cultivate it and to protect it.

  158. So we see commands given, right?

  159. Rule over this.

  160. Be fruitful and multiply.

  161. Fill the earth with my glory.

  162. So we as image bearers are delegated authority.

  163. Our authority is not absolute,

  164. and it is not final.

  165. It always has limits,

  166. and is always subservient to the one who delegated it.

  167. It's got boundaries set up for it.

  168. Authority gone awry,

  169. which there are many examples of,

  170. is always authority that steps out of the bounds which God places on it.

  171. When a person or institution takes up a responsibility not granted to them,

  172. or exercises an authority granted to them in a way not granted to them,

  173. it is at best ineffective.

  174. At best, it's ineffective.

  175. It is at worst abusive.

  176. As a book, I want to commend it to you,

  177. but I haven't read the whole thing,

  178. so I'm not going to commend it to you yet.

  179. But it has been good and helpful so far in my reading of it.

  180. Written by a man named Jonathan Lehman,

  181. many of you are probably familiar with.

  182. And its main title is Authority,

  183. but the subtitle of it I just love.

  184. So the subtitle is

  185. How Godly Rule Protects the Vulnerable,

  186. Strengthens Communities,

  187. and Promotes Human Flourishing.

  188. So delegated authority,

  189. properly exercised by the Scripture,

  190. is good for us,

  191. and it's good for others.

  192. It's not this great evil to be avoided,

  193. but rather a thing for us to take up,

  194. and to understand,

  195. and to exercise

  196. for the place in which we live.

  197. If our aim is to submit to God's good authority

  198. for the sake of protecting the vulnerable,

  199. strengthening our communities,

  200. and promoting human flourishing,

  201. then this topic is of great importance,

  202. and it really must be well understood.

  203. So we see in God's Word

  204. that God delegates His authority

  205. through three institutions

  206. and six positions.

  207. Three institutions

  208. and six positions.

  209. And I just want you to take a moment

  210. and consider

  211. what those three institutions

  212. and six positions

  213. might be.

  214. You're all Bible readers.

  215. I know that you are.

  216. God has ordained authority

  217. in this world.

  218. Do you know them?

  219. I hope at least a couple

  220. have popped into your mind.

  221. You experience them

  222. on a regular basis.

  223. Over the next four weeks,

  224. Lord willing,

  225. we will be considering

  226. the three institutions

  227. and the subsidiary positions

  228. in some detail.

  229. A breeze over, to be sure.

  230. Today we're going to talk about

  231. the family some,

  232. but we're primarily going to talk

  233. about the family

  234. as a way of introducing

  235. the idea to you

  236. of these three institutions

  237. and the six positions.

  238. So here they are.

  239. Are you ready?

  240. Three institutions

  241. and an accompanying tool,

  242. which we'll talk about in detail

  243. in the coming weeks,

  244. that comes along with

  245. that institution.

  246. The first,

  247. the family.

  248. The first is the family.

  249. And the accompanying tool is

  250. the rod.

  251. The rod, right?

  252. This would have been

  253. the short stick

  254. that a shepherd would have carried.

  255. He would have had a staff,

  256. which was for gentle correction,

  257. and a rod,

  258. which was for cracking sheep

  259. over the head.

  260. Those are the two tools

  261. that are being used, right?

  262. This is the tool

  263. that comes along

  264. with the authority

  265. of the family.

  266. Proverbs 13, 24

  267. is an example.

  268. Whoever spares the rod

  269. hates his son.

  270. And I am not telling you

  271. you should crack your kid

  272. over the head

  273. with a short stick.

  274. That's not what the Bible

  275. is saying either,

  276. at all, right?

  277. But corrective discipline

  278. is important

  279. for the training of children.

  280. Whoever spares the rod,

  281. here are those parents,

  282. hates his son.

  283. But he who loves him

  284. is diligent

  285. to discipline him.

  286. So the authority

  287. of the family

  288. comes with a tool

  289. we know as the rod

  290. for corrective discipline.

  291. The second institution,

  292. which was a people for God,

  293. which we now call

  294. the church, right?

  295. So the second institution

  296. is the church.

  297. This is the one

  298. that often people

  299. just grapple with.

  300. What is the tool

  301. given to the church?

  302. What could it possibly be?

  303. Well, it's the keys.

  304. The keys.

  305. We see mention of this

  306. in Matthew chapter 16

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  307. and verse 19.

  308. There Jesus says,

  309. I will give you

  310. the keys

  311. of the kingdom

  312. of heaven.

  313. And whatever you bind

  314. on earth

  315. shall be bound in heaven.

  316. Whatever you loose

  317. on earth

  318. shall be

  319. loosed in heaven.

  320. And this is a head-scratcher

  321. until you read

  322. Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  323. And we get this

  324. careful prescription

  325. for church discipline,

  326. for bringing about

  327. the correction

  328. of souls

  329. that are going wayward.

  330. They're unrepentant

  331. in their sin.

  332. And there's an authority

  333. that the church

  334. brings to bear

  335. called the keys.

  336. This process

  337. of disciplining people

  338. we hope and pray

  339. back into right relationship

  340. with the Lord God.

  341. Right?

  342. So we got the family

  343. with the rod,

  344. the church

  345. with the keys,

  346. and finally,

  347. and this one probably

  348. came into your mind

  349. fairly immediately,

  350. government.

  351. And the tool used

  352. by government

  353. is the sword.

  354. So Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13:3

  355. verse 3 and 4,

  356. For rulers are not

  357. a terror to good conduct,

  358. but to bad.

  359. Would you have no fear

  360. of the one who is in authority?

  361. Then do what is good,

  362. and you will receive

  363. his approval.

  364. For he is God's servant

  365. for your Lord in vain.

  366. For he is the servant of God,

  367. an avenger who carries out

  368. God's wrath

  369. on the wrongdoer.

  370. Right?

  371. So we have these tools

  372. given to these three institutions

  373. that have authority,

  374. and we're going to talk about

  375. many of the complications

  376. that come

  377. in a fallen world

  378. as these institutions

  379. play out their roles.

  380. So three institutions,

  381. and then six positions.

  382. So within the family,

  383. we have the authoritative role

  384. of husband,

  385. and the authoritative role

  386. of parent.

  387. In the church,

  388. we have the authoritative role

  389. of elder,

  390. and we argue,

  391. as congregationalists,

  392. the authoritative role

  393. of the congregation.

  394. Right?

  395. The church as a whole.

  396. The government has

  397. various offices

  398. as suit the occasion

  399. and the time.

  400. King, governors,

  401. judges,

  402. Congress,

  403. a president.

  404. Et cetera.

  405. And then outside

  406. of these three institutions,

  407. there's one

  408. extra-institutional,

  409. biblical position.

  410. The employer,

  411. or boss.

  412. We're going to pick up

  413. the language of master

  414. in the Bible.

  415. Maybe for our day,

  416. manager could be

  417. the best word.

  418. Perhaps your employer

  419. is far removed from you,

  420. but you do have a person

  421. that you answer to

  422. in your job.

  423. Colossians 4.1,

  424. Masters,

  425. treat your bond servants

  426. justly and fairly,

  427. knowing that you also have

  428. a master in heaven.

  429. And we're not going to

  430. take up that one

  431. in this study,

  432. so that's an extra one.

  433. It deserves some time

  434. and attention,

  435. but we're going to think

  436. about these different positions

  437. that exist within

  438. these three institutions

  439. across this time.

  440. Now, within these

  441. three institutions

  442. and six positions,

  443. there is granted

  444. two types of authority.

  445. Two types of authority.

  446. Number one,

  447. you have the authority

  448. of coercion,

  449. which is the power

  450. to make someone

  451. do something by force.

  452. I like Jonathan Lehman

  453. in his book,

  454. Authority,

  455. uses rather the term

  456. the authority of command.

  457. So, the power

  458. to make somebody

  459. do something by force.

  460. Simple example of this

  461. with the government.

  462. There are speed limits

  463. posted everywhere.

  464. And if you break

  465. the speed limit,

  466. it is justly deserved

  467. that you get pulled over

  468. and you get a ticket

  469. for that.

  470. Doesn't mean we always

  471. follow that rule,

  472. but we can't complain

  473. when we get

  474. the coercive authority

  475. applied to us

  476. to keep that speed limit.

  477. You get enough tickets,

  478. you will find yourself

  479. going slower and slower.

  480. We don't try to persuade

  481. our toddlers

  482. to do things all the time.

  483. Sometimes we make them

  484. do things.

  485. My children had to freeze

  486. when I told them

  487. to freeze.

  488. Why?

  489. Because I was concerned

  490. for their safety.

  491. So, we taught them

  492. to do that.

  493. So, if we were in a parking lot

  494. or they were running

  495. towards the road,

  496. I could say freeze

  497. and they would plant

  498. their feet and not move.

  499. And they knew

  500. that there would be

  501. punishment if they didn't

  502. do what we asked them

  503. to do.

  504. So, this is the way

  505. this power comes to bear.

  506. And those tools

  507. that I mentioned to you

  508. accompany this power,

  509. this authority

  510. of command.

  511. The rod,

  512. the keys,

  513. and the sword.

  514. We also have

  515. the authority

  516. of persuasion.

  517. And Jonathan Lehman

  518. uses the term

  519. counsel.

  520. The authority

  521. of counsel.

  522. The power

  523. to convince

  524. someone

  525. to do

  526. something.

  527. So,

  528. if you're thinking

  529. about the church,

  530. we're going to talk

  531. about this at length

  532. next week.

  533. Elders

  534. do not have

  535. the power

  536. of command.

  537. elders,

  538. myself by myself,

  539. I do not exercise

  540. the keys

  541. by myself.

  542. I exercise

  543. the keys

  544. as a part

  545. of a congregational

  546. whole,

  547. but not by myself.

  548. I have never

  549. and will never

  550. because I don't think

  551. I'm authorized

  552. to do it

  553. by the Lord,

  554. kick somebody

  555. out of the church

  556. and so declare

  557. them not a Christian.

  558. I don't think

  559. I have the power

  560. to do that

  561. by myself

  562. and therefore

  563. I won't.

  564. This is good,

  565. right?

  566. You personally

  567. offend me

  568. and I say,

  569. how dare you?

  570. That's offensive.

  571. How could you be

  572. a Christian

  573. and say such a thing?

  574. You're out of here.

  575. It's not a power

  576. that I have.

  577. But I do

  578. have an authority

  579. which means

  580. that it should

  581. bear on your conscience.

  582. Hebrews 13,

  583. 17 says,

  584. obey your leaders

  585. and submit

  586. to them

  587. for they're

  588. keeping watch

  589. over your soul.

  590. This authority

  591. of counsel

  592. or persuasion,

  593. it's what I'm doing

  594. right now.

  595. I'm trying

  596. to convince

  597. you

  598. that authority

  599. is good

  600. and I want

  601. you to

  602. take it up

  603. and by the

  604. power of the

  605. spirit,

  606. I hope it

  607. works down

  608. into your

  609. heart

  610. so that

  611. you will

  612. want to

  613. obey it.

  614. We do

  615. this day

  616. in and

  617. day out.

  618. But inevitably,

  619. every time I preach

  620. a sermon,

  621. somebody comes up

  622. to me and says,

  623. I don't know.

  624. Well,

  625. what do I do?

  626. I don't say,

  627. get in your car

  628. and go home.

  629. I say,

  630. well,

  631. I'd love to

  632. convince you.

  633. Let's go back

  634. to the text.

  635. Let's keep

  636. working on it

  637. together.

  638. Maybe I was

  639. wrong.

  640. Let's look at it

  641. and let's work

  642. together toward

  643. the truth

  644. together.

  645. So,

  646. the authority

  647. of command

  648. and the authority

  649. of counsel

  650. are helpful

  651. for us to get

  652. right in our

  653. mind.

  654. Again,

  655. the authority

  656. of command

  657. possesses the

  658. right of

  659. corrective

  660. discipline.

  661. The authority

  662. of counsel

  663. while the Bible

  664. still is saying

  665. you should listen

  666. to this authority,

  667. it has no

  668. immediate

  669. retributive

  670. consequence

  671. if you don't

  672. obey it.

  673. Okay?

  674. So,

  675. let's remember,

  676. and I'm setting you

  677. up for a lot of

  678. this for the next

  679. two weeks,

  680. but let's remember

  681. God is the

  682. absolute and

  683. final authority

  684. and God

  685. delegates authority

  686. and authorizes

  687. the boundaries

  688. of that authority.

  689. So,

  690. we do well

  691. to lay aside

  692. our experiences

  693. and our prejudices

  694. against authority

  695. and to lay

  696. bare God's

  697. word on the

  698. matter.

  699. Whether or not

  700. our experience

  701. of authority

  702. has been

  703. positive,

  704. what might

  705. a world,

  706. a nation,

  707. a church,

  708. a family

  709. look like

  710. when ordered

  711. properly

  712. by God's

  713. good

  714. authority.

  715. It's really

  716. worth stopping

  717. and considering.

  718. If God is

  719. the authority

  720. and he's

  721. good and

  722. he's created

  723. and delegated

  724. authority,

  725. which is

  726. good,

  727. huh,

  728. what might

  729. it look

  730. like?

  731. We'll talk

  732. about this

  733. at length,

  734. but our

  735. church,

  736. even as

  737. congregationalists,

  738. we're not a

  739. pure democracy.

  740. Pure democracy

  741. would be chaos

  742. in the life

  743. of a church.

  744. This is not

  745. the way

  746. that God

  747. intended

  748. for it to

  749. work together.

  750. We need

  751. to understand

  752. these roles

  753. and categories

  754. so that we

  755. can properly

  756. function

  757. within them.

  758. Charles Spurgeon

  759. once said,

  760. this is just

  761. a broad

  762. quotation,

  763. he wasn't

  764. specifically

  765. speaking of

  766. authority

  767. at the time,

  768. this is on

  769. the back

  770. of the

  771. bulletin

  772. if you

  773. care to

  774. see it,

  775. he said,

  776. I believe

  777. certain

  778. doctrines

  779. because God

  780. says they

  781. are true

  782. and the only

  783. authority

  784. I have

  785. for their

  786. truth

  787. is the

  788. word of

  789. God.

  790. I receive

  791. such and

  792. such doctrines

  793. not because

  794. I can prove

  795. them to be

  796. compatible with

  797. reason,

  798. not because

  799. my judgment

  800. accepts them,

  801. but because

  802. God says

  803. they are

  804. true.

  805. Now this is

  806. one of the

  807. best services

  808. we can render

  809. to God,

  810. to submit

  811. ourselves to

  812. him in our

  813. belief of

  814. what he has

  815. revealed and

  816. ask him to

  817. fix his

  818. truths in

  819. our hearts

  820. and make

  821. us obey

  822. them.

  823. Now,

  824. the family

  825. is the

  826. first and

  827. foremost

  828. institutional

  829. authority.

  830. And what I

  831. mean by that

  832. is that it

  833. was created

  834. first and

  835. as foremost,

  836. it's foundational

  837. to all of the

  838. other systems

  839. that we see

  840. playing out.

  841. As goes the

  842. family,

  843. so goes the

  844. rest of

  845. society.

  846. You will not

  847. have strong

  848. churches without

  849. strong families,

  850. families,

  851. you will not

  852. have strong

  853. countries without

  854. strong families.

  855. Consider that

  856. this is why

  857. over the last

  858. century,

  859. our enemy

  860. has been

  861. after the

  862. family.

  863. That is the

  864. primary focus

  865. of the

  866. attacks on

  867. our

  868. well-being.

  869. It was

  870. created in the

  871. early days of

  872. the creation

  873. of the world.

  874. You can read

  875. the account

  876. in Genesis

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  877. chapter 2.

  878. Adam is given

  879. that dominion

  880. mandate.

  881. Go forth,

  882. be fruitful,

  883. multiply,

  884. rule over all

  885. things,

  886. and then he

  887. rightly declares

  888. that Adam is

  889. going to need a

  890. partner to be

  891. able to do

  892. so.

  893. God institutes

  894. the family,

  895. husband and

  896. wife.

  897. And if mankind

  898. is to spread

  899. God's image

  900. across the globe,

  901. then they

  902. needed a

  903. mechanism by

  904. which to

  905. do so.

  906. The whole

  907. thing gets

  908. messed up before

  909. children even

  910. enter into the

  911. scene,

  912. but it was

  913. always the

  914. intention of

  915. this institution,

  916. right, that it

  917. would be husband

  918. and wife and

  919. children,

  920. because we see

  921. this command to

  922. multiply and to

  923. fill the earth

  924. with the glory of

  925. God.

  926. So again, we see

  927. within this

  928. institution of the

  929. family, we see

  930. two positions.

  931. We see the

  932. husband and we

  933. see the

  934. parents.

  935. Now the

  936. husband,

  937. here's this

  938. husband,

  939. does not have

  940. the authority

  941. of command.

  942. look around

  943. in the text,

  944. I challenge

  945. you,

  946. you will not

  947. find a rod

  948. given to the

  949. husband.

  950. The husband

  951. rather has

  952. the authority

  953. of counsel.

  954. people.

  955. 1 Corinthians 11

  956. 3 says this,

  957. but I want you

  958. to understand

  959. that the head

  960. of every man

  961. is Christ,

  962. the head of

  963. a wife is

  964. her husband,

  965. and the head

  966. of Christ

  967. is God.

  968. I mean,

  969. a subservient

  970. delegated

  971. authority.

  972. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 5:22–28

  973. 5 verse 22

  974. through 28,

  975. wives,

  976. submit to your

  977. own husbands

  978. as to the

  979. Lord.

  980. There's the

  981. conscience

  982. command,

  983. the thing

  984. that weighs

  985. on you.

  986. You'll be

  987. judged for

  988. one day.

  989. Should you

  990. be obedient

  991. to this?

  992. You should

  993. be obedient

  994. to this.

  995. Wives,

  996. submit to

  997. your own

  998. husbands

  999. as to

  1000. the Lord.

  1001. For the

  1002. husband is

  1003. the head

  1004. of the

  1005. wife,

  1006. even as

  1007. Christ is

  1008. the head

  1009. of the

  1010. church,

  1011. his body

  1012. and is

  1013. himself

  1014. its

  1015. savior.

  1016. Now as

  1017. the

  1018. church

  1019. submits

  1020. to

  1021. Christ,

  1022. so also

  1023. wives

  1024. should

  1025. submit

  1026. in

  1027. everything

  1028. to

  1029. their

  1030. husbands.

  1031. And then

  1032. the command

  1033. goes on.

  1034. Now,

  1035. I was a

  1036. sociology

  1037. major.

  1038. I did

  1039. my

  1040. undergrad

  1041. work at

  1042. the

  1043. University

  1044. of

  1045. North

  1046. Georgia.

  1047. Many

  1048. of the

  1049. conversations

  1050. right now

  1051. that are

  1052. just

  1053. shocking

  1054. our

  1055. culture,

  1056. I can't

  1057. believe

  1058. we're

  1059. having

  1060. these

  1061. kinds

  1062. of

  1063. conversations

  1064. about

  1065. sexuality

  1066. and

  1067. gender,

  1068. we were

  1069. having

  1070. in the

  1071. classroom

  1072. two

  1073. decades

  1074. ago.

  1075. We

  1076. were

  1077. talking

  1078. about

  1079. all

  1080. of this

  1081. already.

  1082. And I

  1083. had a

  1084. sociology

  1085. of

  1086. gender

  1087. class,

  1088. and the

  1089. professor's

  1090. vendetta

  1091. in that

  1092. class was

  1093. to condemn

  1094. Christianity

  1095. and for

  1096. what it

  1097. had done

  1098. to the

  1099. relationship

  1100. between

  1101. men

  1102. and

  1103. women.

  1104. And there

  1105. were

  1106. many

  1107. females

  1108. in that

  1109. class

  1110. that

  1111. loved

  1112. everything

  1113. that he

  1114. had to

  1115. say.

  1116. There was

  1117. one in

  1118. particular,

  1119. she was

  1120. a middle

  1121. aged

  1122. woman,

  1123. she had

  1124. come

  1125. back

  1126. to

  1127. school,

  1128. and she

  1129. had a

  1130. really

  1131. good

  1132. friend

  1133. whose

  1134. husband

  1135. in the

  1136. name

  1137. of

  1138. Christianity

  1139. using

  1140. the

  1141. scripture

  1142. was

  1143. physically

  1144. abusive

  1145. to her.

  1146. Like,

  1147. put her

  1148. in the

  1149. hospital

  1150. physically

  1151. abusive

  1152. to her.

  1153. And I

  1154. listened to

  1155. her,

  1156. one class

  1157. period,

  1158. bemoan

  1159. Christianity

  1160. for this,

  1161. and she

  1162. started to

  1163. speak again

  1164. in another

  1165. class period,

  1166. and I

  1167. just shot

  1168. my hand

  1169. up.

  1170. Before I

  1171. even thought

  1172. what I

  1173. was going

  1174. to say,

  1175. shot

  1176. my hand

  1177. up,

  1178. and I

  1179. was called

  1180. on.

  1181. And I

  1182. just

  1183. turned to

  1184. her,

  1185. and I

  1186. said,

  1187. I said,

  1188. ma'am,

  1189. quite a bit

  1190. older than

  1191. me.

  1192. I said,

  1193. ma'am,

  1194. nowhere in

  1195. the Bible

  1196. is the

  1197. justification

  1198. for what

  1199. that man

  1200. is doing

  1201. to his

  1202. wife

  1203. found.

  1204. It is

  1205. not

  1206. found in

  1207. the

  1208. scripture.

  1209. He's

  1210. misusing

  1211. it if

  1212. he's

  1213. using it

  1214. as the

  1215. justification.

  1216. So your

  1217. attack against

  1218. Christianity

  1219. is not

  1220. founded.

  1221. And I'll

  1222. say that

  1223. to the

  1224. degree that

  1225. I'll

  1226. say,

  1227. as a

  1228. Christian

  1229. man,

  1230. if that

  1231. woman is

  1232. ready to

  1233. leave that

  1234. husband for

  1235. his abusive

  1236. behavior,

  1237. I'm there

  1238. to help.

  1239. Now,

  1240. I don't

  1241. bear the

  1242. power of

  1243. the sword,

  1244. so this

  1245. gets complicated,

  1246. right?

  1247. But I do

  1248. believe as a

  1249. Christian I

  1250. should be

  1251. one who

  1252. seeks

  1253. justice.

  1254. And by

  1255. God's grace,

  1256. it shut

  1257. down the

  1258. attacks against

  1259. Christianity

  1260. again and

  1261. again and

  1262. again.

  1263. Another

  1264. class that I

  1265. had,

  1266. sociology of

  1267. religion

  1268. class,

  1269. same

  1270. professor,

  1271. going hard

  1272. and read

  1273. this text,

  1274. Ephesians 5,

  1275. he read

  1276. verse 22

  1277. through 24

  1278. that wives

  1279. should submit

  1280. in everything

  1281. to their

  1282. husbands and

  1283. people are

  1284. up in arms

  1285. and they're

  1286. very upset

  1287. about Christianity

  1288. and what it's

  1289. done and how

  1290. oppressive it

  1291. is to women

  1292. and I just

  1293. quietly got my

  1294. Bible out and

  1295. I opened it

  1296. up and I

  1297. set it on

  1298. the desk and

  1299. I don't know

  1300. why,

  1301. but at one

  1302. point he

  1303. said,

  1304. okay Nathan,

  1305. what do you

  1306. think?

  1307. And I

  1308. said,

  1309. well since

  1310. you asked,

  1311. you misuse

  1312. the Bible

  1313. for your

  1314. agenda and

  1315. you ought to

  1316. read the

  1317. rest of the

  1318. text.

  1319. So I just

  1320. read it.

  1321. So here it

  1322. is,

  1323. verse 25.

  1324. Husbands,

  1325. here we are,

  1326. oh men,

  1327. oh if you're

  1328. being proud at

  1329. the moment,

  1330. wives should

  1331. submit to us

  1332. and everything.

  1333. Husbands,

  1334. love your

  1335. wives.

  1336. This is not

  1337. an emotional

  1338. thing,

  1339. this word does

  1340. not mean that.

  1341. Should we be

  1342. affectionate towards

  1343. our wives?

  1344. Yes, we

  1345. should.

  1346. Right?

  1347. Sacrificially

  1348. serve your

  1349. wives,

  1350. love your

  1351. wives,

  1352. seek their

  1353. highest good

  1354. in all

  1355. things.

  1356. And he's

  1357. going to

  1358. explain what

  1359. that highest

  1360. good is in

  1361. just a moment.

  1362. That's what

  1363. we're supposed

  1364. to be doing.

  1365. Husbands,

  1366. we're supposed

  1367. to love

  1368. our wives

  1369. as Christ

  1370. loved the

  1371. church.

  1372. And in case

  1373. you're so

  1374. dense that

  1375. you still

  1376. don't get

  1377. it,

  1378. he says,

  1379. and gave

  1380. himself up

  1381. for her.

  1382. How did

  1383. Christ love

  1384. the church?

  1385. He died

  1386. for the

  1387. church.

  1388. That flips

  1389. the whole

  1390. thing on

  1391. its head.

  1392. Right?

  1393. You cannot

  1394. support a

  1395. feminist agenda

  1396. from this

  1397. text.

  1398. This is the

  1399. kind of

  1400. authority we

  1401. are meant to

  1402. be exercising

  1403. in our

  1404. homes.

  1405. Right?

  1406. Gave himself

  1407. up for her.

  1408. That he,

  1409. and we're

  1410. talking about

  1411. Christ and

  1412. the church,

  1413. but this is

  1414. the way we're

  1415. supposed to be

  1416. serving our

  1417. wives,

  1418. that he

  1419. might sanctify

  1420. her,

  1421. having cleansed

  1422. her by the

  1423. washing of

  1424. water with

  1425. the word,

  1426. so that he

  1427. might present

  1428. the church to

  1429. himself in

  1430. splendor without

  1431. spot or

  1432. wrinkle or

  1433. any such

  1434. thing,

  1435. that she

  1436. might be

  1437. holy and

  1438. without

  1439. blemish.

  1440. This is the

  1441. way we are

  1442. supposed to be

  1443. serving our

  1444. wives,

  1445. right?

  1446. Seeking their

  1447. highest good,

  1448. which is their

  1449. spiritual gain.

  1450. In the same

  1451. way,

  1452. again,

  1453. I think Paul

  1454. knows how

  1455. thick-headed

  1456. we can be.

  1457. In the same

  1458. way,

  1459. husbands should

  1460. love their

  1461. wives as

  1462. their own

  1463. bodies.

  1464. He who

  1465. loves his

  1466. wife loves

  1467. himself.

  1468. So we

  1469. work by the

  1470. power of the

  1471. word to

  1472. persuade our

  1473. wives.

  1474. We're giving

  1475. them counsel.

  1476. We're helping

  1477. to steer them.

  1478. We're giving

  1479. them guidance

  1480. for how they

  1481. need to live

  1482. their wives.

  1483. Now,

  1484. I meant to

  1485. ask my

  1486. wife for

  1487. permission to

  1488. share this

  1489. story,

  1490. so I hope

  1491. she won't

  1492. mind that

  1493. I'm sharing

  1494. it.

  1495. I think

  1496. she won't

  1497. mind that

  1498. I'm sharing

  1499. it.

  1500. Sam,

  1501. I am

  1502. sorry.

  1503. My wife

  1504. likes

  1505. true crime

  1506. TV,

  1507. and I

  1508. don't know

  1509. the name

  1510. of the

  1511. show,

  1512. but she

  1513. got onto

  1514. a show

  1515. that was

  1516. like bizarre

  1517. crime kind

  1518. of stuff,

  1519. and I

  1520. just was

  1521. seeing in

  1522. her kind

  1523. of this

  1524. growing

  1525. anxiety,

  1526. just fears

  1527. that I

  1528. felt were

  1529. misplaced

  1530. for her

  1531. own safety,

  1532. for the

  1533. safety of

  1534. our children.

  1535. And so I

  1536. began by

  1537. saying,

  1538. I don't

  1539. know that

  1540. that's really

  1541. serving your

  1542. soul,

  1543. watching those

  1544. shows.

  1545. I think it's

  1546. creating this

  1547. temptation in

  1548. you to

  1549. fear,

  1550. not trust

  1551. the Lord's

  1552. providence in

  1553. our lives.

  1554. And she

  1555. said,

  1556. yeah,

  1557. you might be

  1558. right,

  1559. yeah,

  1560. I'll think

  1561. about it.

  1562. I'm like,

  1563. okay,

  1564. that's

  1565. great.

  1566. Now some

  1567. time went

  1568. on,

  1569. and I

  1570. went,

  1571. hey,

  1572. are you still

  1573. watching?

  1574. Still noticing

  1575. that there's

  1576. kind of these

  1577. fears in you?

  1578. Are you still

  1579. watching?

  1580. Yeah,

  1581. I'm still

  1582. watching it.

  1583. So I just

  1584. said a little

  1585. more emphatically,

  1586. I really think

  1587. you need to

  1588. stop.

  1589. I think it's

  1590. time.

  1591. And then we

  1592. took a trip

  1593. up to Clayton,

  1594. and we were

  1595. playing on a

  1596. river.

  1597. Our kids

  1598. were toddlers

  1599. at the time,

  1600. and we were

  1601. across from a

  1602. dirt road on

  1603. a riverbank,

  1604. rocky riverbank.

  1605. We were

  1606. sitting in

  1607. chairs,

  1608. Sam and I

  1609. were,

  1610. and the boys

  1611. were playing

  1612. around us,

  1613. and an old

  1614. truck went

  1615. rolling by.

  1616. Admittedly,

  1617. it was creepy.

  1618. It was black.

  1619. The windows

  1620. were like

  1621. blacked out

  1622. on the

  1623. truck and

  1624. rolling by.

  1625. But it was

  1626. like a really

  1627. popular fishing

  1628. river.

  1629. I'm fairly

  1630. sure the guy

  1631. was just

  1632. scouting a

  1633. place to

  1634. go fishing.

  1635. But he

  1636. went rolling

  1637. by really

  1638. slow,

  1639. and Sam

  1640. said,

  1641. boys,

  1642. quick,

  1643. quick,

  1644. quick,

  1645. get behind

  1646. me,

  1647. get behind

  1648. me,

  1649. get behind

  1650. me.

  1651. And I

  1652. was like,

  1653. what are

  1654. you doing

  1655. right now?

  1656. And she

  1657. said,

  1658. he might

  1659. be a

  1660. sniper.

  1661. I love

  1662. you,

  1663. Sam.

  1664. Don't hate

  1665. me for

  1666. telling this

  1667. story.

  1668. So it

  1669. was at

  1670. this point,

  1671. the very

  1672. first thing

  1673. I said

  1674. was,

  1675. it's time

  1676. to stop

  1677. watching that

  1678. show.

  1679. It's time to

  1680. stop watching

  1681. that show.

  1682. And to my

  1683. wife's

  1684. wonderful credit,

  1685. she said,

  1686. you're right.

  1687. You're right.

  1688. right.

  1689. She submitted

  1690. to my

  1691. authority of

  1692. persuasion.

  1693. It just took

  1694. a little time

  1695. for us to

  1696. get there,

  1697. but she

  1698. said,

  1699. you're right.

  1700. There's this

  1701. irrational fear

  1702. arising in

  1703. me,

  1704. and I see

  1705. that you're

  1706. working for

  1707. my good.

  1708. Thank you.

  1709. Thank you

  1710. for doing

  1711. this.

  1712. If husbands

  1713. abuse this

  1714. authority,

  1715. we take up

  1716. something that's

  1717. not ours to

  1718. take up.

  1719. We step

  1720. outside of

  1721. the bounds,

  1722. we become

  1723. abusive.

  1724. And I don't

  1725. think anybody

  1726. in this room

  1727. is physically

  1728. abusive.

  1729. If you are,

  1730. you better

  1731. look out.

  1732. But I will

  1733. also say,

  1734. men,

  1735. with our

  1736. anger,

  1737. we can

  1738. emotionally

  1739. abuse our

  1740. wives.

  1741. We can get

  1742. our way

  1743. with the

  1744. threat of

  1745. us blowing

  1746. our tops

  1747. and disrupting

  1748. the peace

  1749. in the house.

  1750. And a lot

  1751. of your

  1752. wives might

  1753. tiptoe around

  1754. you just

  1755. wondering when

  1756. they're going

  1757. to misstep.

  1758. We want to

  1759. be sure

  1760. that we

  1761. don't do

  1762. this.

  1763. We do

  1764. not have

  1765. that type

  1766. of authority

  1767. as husbands.

  1768. Aim at the

  1769. highest good

  1770. of your

  1771. wife,

  1772. the spiritual

  1773. good of

  1774. your wife,

  1775. the care

  1776. and protection

  1777. of your

  1778. family in

  1779. the way

  1780. you exercise

  1781. your

  1782. authority.

  1783. Second

  1784. position in

  1785. the home

  1786. is that of

  1787. parent.

  1788. And we'll

  1789. wrap this

  1790. up fairly

  1791. quickly here.

  1792. Now,

  1793. with parenting

  1794. there is

  1795. the authority

  1796. of command.

  1797. Please don't

  1798. give your

  1799. children

  1800. authority.

  1801. There's not

  1802. an authority

  1803. delegated to

  1804. children.

  1805. The authority

  1806. is delegated

  1807. to you

  1808. to help

  1809. them to

  1810. grow.

  1811. We want

  1812. our children

  1813. to grow

  1814. in wisdom

  1815. in the

  1816. world,

  1817. which includes

  1818. all the

  1819. little practical

  1820. things that

  1821. we need to

  1822. teach them

  1823. how to do.

  1824. They need

  1825. to know

  1826. how to make

  1827. the peanut

  1828. butter

  1829. sandwich

  1830. and to

  1831. clean up

  1832. after.

  1833. But most

  1834. importantly,

  1835. it's those

  1836. core things

  1837. they need

  1838. to know

  1839. for godliness.

  1840. Psalm 78,

    Psalms 78:5–7

  1841. verse 5-7,

  1842. He established

  1843. a testimony

  1844. in Jacob

  1845. and appointed

  1846. a law

  1847. in Israel

  1848. which He

  1849. commanded our

  1850. fathers to

  1851. teach their

  1852. children,

  1853. that the next

  1854. generation might

  1855. know them,

  1856. the children yet

  1857. unborn,

  1858. and arise

  1859. and tell them

  1860. to their

  1861. children,

  1862. so that they

  1863. should set

  1864. their hope

  1865. in God

  1866. and not forget

  1867. the works

  1868. of God,

  1869. but keep

  1870. His commandments.

  1871. We are

  1872. supposed to

  1873. teach God's

  1874. good commands

  1875. to our

  1876. children.

  1877. And this is a

  1878. lot of work.

  1879. It's a day-in

  1880. and it's a

  1881. day-out work.

  1882. And we get

  1883. help in the

  1884. doing of it,

  1885. but that

  1886. authority has

  1887. been given

  1888. to you,

  1889. parents.

  1890. This is

  1891. your job

  1892. in your

  1893. children's

  1894. lives.

  1895. Another text,

  1896. Ephesians 6,

    Ephesians 6:1–4

  1897. verse 1-4,

  1898. Children,

  1899. obey your

  1900. parents in

  1901. the Lord,

  1902. for this

  1903. is right.

  1904. Honor your

  1905. father and

  1906. mother.

  1907. This is the

  1908. first commandment

  1909. with a promise,

  1910. that it may

  1911. go well with

  1912. you,

  1913. and that you

  1914. may live

  1915. long,

  1916. in the

  1917. land.

  1918. So children,

  1919. you need to

  1920. hear,

  1921. God has

  1922. given you

  1923. authority for

  1924. your good.

  1925. It doesn't

  1926. always go

  1927. perfectly.

  1928. Your parents

  1929. are not

  1930. perfect.

  1931. I tell my

  1932. children all

  1933. the time,

  1934. I am not

  1935. perfect.

  1936. I am trying,

  1937. but I'm not.

  1938. But I'm aiming

  1939. at your good.

  1940. That's what I'm

  1941. trying to accomplish

  1942. here.

  1943. I'm going to

  1944. miss it sometimes,

  1945. but I'm really

  1946. trying to do

  1947. the right thing

  1948. for you.

  1949. If you will

  1950. listen to me

  1951. and follow the

  1952. things that I'm

  1953. teaching you to

  1954. do,

  1955. there's a

  1956. promise in

  1957. the Bible

  1958. for you

  1959. that it

  1960. will go

  1961. well with

  1962. you.

  1963. And then we

  1964. see verse 4,

  1965. fathers,

  1966. which also

  1967. could be

  1968. translated

  1969. parents,

  1970. do not

  1971. provoke your

  1972. children to

  1973. anger,

  1974. but bring

  1975. them up in

  1976. the discipline

  1977. and instruction

  1978. of the Lord.

  1979. So we see

  1980. even here

  1981. there's a

  1982. parameter put

  1983. on the

  1984. authority of

  1985. command that

  1986. we have

  1987. as parents.

  1988. once again,

  1989. while we

  1990. may bring

  1991. the rod to

  1992. bear in our

  1993. children's

  1994. lives,

  1995. we ought

  1996. not overdo

  1997. such a

  1998. thing,

  1999. because we

  2000. could provoke

  2001. our children

  2002. to anger.

  2003. And we've,

  2004. in another

  2005. time,

  2006. talked about

  2007. this text

  2008. and talked

  2009. about what

  2010. that means

  2011. is they

  2012. have a

  2013. general

  2014. brooding

  2015. intent

  2016. towards their

  2017. parents.

  2018. They want

  2019. to cast

  2020. off your

  2021. authority

  2022. because it's

  2023. not good

  2024. from their

  2025. estimation

  2026. in any

  2027. measure

  2028. at all.

  2029. They're just

  2030. looking for

  2031. ways to

  2032. reject your

  2033. leadership

  2034. in their

  2035. life.

  2036. We want

  2037. to bring

  2038. along our

  2039. kids.

  2040. We want

  2041. to do it

  2042. in a way

  2043. that shows

  2044. them how

  2045. they ought

  2046. to follow

  2047. the Lord

  2048. and we

  2049. want to

  2050. do it

  2051. in a way

  2052. that is

  2053. consistent

  2054. with the

  2055. way the

  2056. Lord

  2057. brings

  2058. discipline

  2059. to us.

  2060. Lots

  2061. of instructive

  2062. discipline.

  2063. The

  2064. occasional

  2065. corrective

  2066. discipline,

  2067. we want

  2068. to be doing

  2069. this work

  2070. carefully

  2071. and

  2072. clearly

  2073. as we

  2074. exercise

  2075. this

  2076. authority

  2077. of

  2078. command.

  2079. I think

  2080. it's

  2081. just a

  2082. practical

  2083. wisdom.

  2084. This

  2085. authority

  2086. of

  2087. command

  2088. seems

  2089. to

  2090. give

  2091. way

  2092. as

  2093. children

  2094. grow

  2095. to a

  2096. more

  2097. authority

  2098. of

  2099. counsel.

  2100. There's

  2101. a point

  2102. at which

  2103. you may

  2104. not want

  2105. to bend

  2106. your

  2107. child

  2108. over

  2109. your

  2110. knee

  2111. any

  2112. longer.

  2113. It might

  2114. be better

  2115. to sit

  2116. down

  2117. and reason

  2118. with

  2119. them.

  2120. You also

  2121. might threaten

  2122. to kick

  2123. them out

  2124. of your

  2125. house.

  2126. That's

  2127. some

  2128. retribution

  2129. for them

  2130. as well.

  2131. But we

  2132. want to

  2133. see ourselves

  2134. coming

  2135. alongside

  2136. our

  2137. children

  2138. as they

  2139. get older

  2140. and helping

  2141. them to

  2142. walk

  2143. wisely

  2144. through

  2145. life.

  2146. All of

  2147. this

  2148. meant

  2149. for good.

  2150. I commend

  2151. you

  2152. families in

  2153. this church.

  2154. I see all

  2155. the hard

  2156. work that

  2157. you're doing.

  2158. I think

  2159. it's a

  2160. blessing.

  2161. It's a

  2162. real work

  2163. of grace.

  2164. I love

  2165. standing

  2166. back and

  2167. watching you

  2168. work with

  2169. your

  2170. children.

  2171. I'm

  2172. excited

  2173. for the

  2174. generation

  2175. to come

  2176. and the

  2177. generation

  2178. that will

  2179. follow

  2180. that.

  2181. I'm

  2182. so

  2183. happy

  2184. for the

  2185. way

  2186. the

  2187. Lord

  2188. is

  2189. working

  2190. here

  2191. in the

  2192. families

  2193. of our

  2194. church.

  2195. So

  2196. Lord

  2197. willing,

  2198. we'll

  2199. take up

  2200. this

  2201. framework

  2202. next

  2203. week.

  2204. We're

  2205. going to

  2206. talk

  2207. about

  2208. the

  2209. church

  2210. and

  2211. the

  2212. role

  2213. of

  2214. elders

  2215. specifically.

  2216. We're

  2217. going to

  2218. install

  2219. our

  2220. new

  2221. elders.

  2222. We've

  2223. got four

  2224. new

  2225. elders

  2226. that we

  2227. haven't

  2228. done

  2229. an

  2230. installation

  2231. for.

  2232. It's

  2233. been

  2234. way

  2235. too

  2236. long.

  2237. So

  2238. we're

  2239. going to

  2240. do

  2241. that

  2242. as part

  2243. of our

  2244. gathering

  2245. together

  2246. next week.

  2247. The week

  2248. after that

  2249. we'll

  2250. talk about

  2251. the

  2252. church

  2253. and

  2254. the

  2255. congregation

  2256. and

  2257. what

  2258. kind

  2259. of

  2260. authority

  2261. the

  2262. congregation

  2263. bears

  2264. and then

  2265. we'll

  2266. finish

  2267. it

  2268. up.

  2269. I

  2270. know

  2271. you're

  2272. all

  2273. going

  2274. to

  2275. look

  2276. forward

  2277. to

  2278. it

  2279. with

  2280. the

  2281. government.

  2282. So

  2283. let

  2284. me

  2285. just

  2286. pray

  2287. closing

  2288. for

  2289. us.
