  1. I would love yet to say good morning to you. Good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  2. We're going to continue this morning, week three of four, on a series on authority.

  3. And as I've done the last two weeks, and probably will do every time we teach something topical, I just want to warn you to be extra discerning as we open up the Bible in this way.

  4. It's good. It's really valuable for us to take up topics from time to time and think about broadly what the Bible has to say about a particular thing.

  5. But we must be cautious as we do it. We want to be so careful that we don't read into the text what we want it to say, but rather that the Bible itself communicates to us about a topic.

  6. So, we've been working on this issue of authority, and I told you before that we're doing this largely because the congregation, a number of you were asking for us to teach more about congregationalism.

  7. For us to help you wrap your minds around what the Bible has to say about such a thing.

  8. I worry about sermons like this. I've been thankful that some of you have expressed encouragement across the past two weeks.

  9. But it can feel a little bit just like the mechanics of things.

  10. Like, why does this matter for us?

  11. But this one perhaps matters most readily as we think about the responsibility of the church, the authority the church has, and more specifically, the congregation.

  12. So, what does it mean to be a congregationalist?

  13. We are a congregationalist congregation.

  14. What are the responsibilities held by the congregation, and therefore, what authority does the congregation have?

  15. These are important questions for us to ask and answer if we're going to be a healthy church.

  16. So, I hope that our time together this morning will help us all have clear answers to those questions in our minds.

  17. Now, before we delve into congregationalism and look at Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  18. I need to remind you that I have made eight overarching biblical assertions in our study so far.

  19. And so, you'll do well to listen to the previous recordings of the sermons if you weren't with us.

  20. But I quickly want to give them to you because they're important as framework, especially if you haven't been with us so far.

  21. So, number one, God's authority is innate.

  22. That means it belongs to him, and nobody gave it to him, right?

  23. He is the ultimate authority figure because he is God.

  24. And that authority is final because he is God.

  25. He is the highest of authority.

  26. And if he wasn't, he wouldn't be God.

  27. Secondly, God's authority is necessarily good, whether we recognize it or experience it to be good.

  28. It's necessarily good because he is good, right?

  29. He's 100% good all the time.

  30. And so, his authority is necessarily good.

  31. Thirdly, humankind has an authority problem.

  32. We just generally don't seem to like it.

  33. We've experienced a lot of misplaced and misspent authority.

  34. We have good reason to be suspect of authority.

  35. But at our very core, our sinful nature wants to reject authority, authority of God's making.

  36. So, humankind has an authority problem, and we do well to remember that as we come to the issue and think about authority.

  37. Number four, we are delegated authority.

  38. Part of the way God works his authority in the world is through delegated authority.

  39. And that delegated authority always has limits and is always subservient to the one who delegated it.

  40. It's been given parameters, that authority, and therefore, it is subservient to the higher authority of the one who granted it, which is God.

  41. Number five, when a person or institution takes up a responsibility not granted to them,

  42. or exercise an authority granted to them in a way not granted to them,

  43. it is, at best, ineffective.

  44. It is, at worst, abusive.

  45. Right?

  46. So, we want to be clear on our categories.

  47. What authorities have been given to whom, and how should that authority be exercised?

  48. Sixth, the aim of exercising authority, and this is, I stole this from Jonathan Lehman's book on authority.

  49. This is his subtitle.

  50. In submission to God's good authority, it's for the sake of protecting the vulnerable,

  51. strengthening our communities, and promoting human flourishing.

  52. Right?

  53. So, it has good purpose in mind.

  54. Godly authority exercised properly is for the good of people.

  55. Number seven, God delegates his authority through three institutions and six positions.

  56. Because I've talked about these now for two weeks, I'm going to breeze through them fairly quickly.

  57. But we see in the Bible three institutions.

  58. We see the family, we see the church, and we see the government.

  59. Okay?

  60. The family, the church, and the government.

  61. And within those institutions, there are positions.

  62. So, in the family, we have the role of husband and the role of parent.

  63. So, both have granted authority.

  64. In the church, we see the role of elder, the position of elder, and the position of congregation.

  65. So, all of us as a whole, together, has an authority.

  66. In the government, we have various offices, kings, governors, judges, citizens, etc.

  67. And then an extra institutional, unless you are employed by the church or government, we have the position of employer, boss, manager, etc.

  68. There are commands and authorities given there as well.

  69. Within, number eight, within these three institutions and six positions, there is granted two types of authority.

  70. Number one, there is the authority of command or coercion, which is the power to make someone do something by force.

  71. It possesses the right of corrective discipline.

  72. And I have spoken to you about how those institutions we see in the Scripture, a tool is given to each one of them.

  73. For the family, it is the rod.

  74. For the church, it is the keys.

  75. And for the government, it is the sword.

  76. And that's this authority of command or coercion.

  77. And so we want to think about that authority and how it applies to each of those institutions.

  78. Today, to the church and the congregation.

  79. Secondly, we see the authority of counsel or persuasion.

  80. The power to convince someone to do something.

  81. Now, we can only call this authority or power if it has some measure of bearing on you.

  82. Unlike the advice you might receive from a friend, the authority of counsel has weight.

  83. There's actually an authority behind it.

  84. And an example which we considered at length last week is the authority of counsel that an elder holds.

  85. We argue that an elder does not have the power of coercion or command, but rather the authority of counsel or persuasion.

  86. But there is an authority there because the author of Hebrews, in Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 17,

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  87. this is just the beginning of that verse, says,

  88. Obey your leaders and submit to them.

  89. For they are keeping watch over your souls as those who have to give an account.

  90. And so, last week I asked the question,

  91. To what extent is the author of Hebrews expecting his hearers to obey and submit to their leaders?

  92. Certainly not outside the bounds of the Bible, but if he only intends to have them obey and submit to the Bible,

  93. why not just say that?

  94. As they exercise this authority of counsel,

  95. why not just say,

  96. When they teach you the Bible, in the way you want the Bible taught, then you should listen to them.

  97. He doesn't say that.

  98. He says you should obey and submit to them.

  99. And the reason I presented to you is because there are matters of application of the Bible,

  100. gray areas that require careful navigation and decisions that must be made.

  101. So, I suggested to you that elders of a church possess authority in matters of prudence,

  102. careful, wise application of the Bible in a particular circumstance,

  103. and in matters of preference.

  104. All the particulars, the so many things that need to be decided in the life of a church.

  105. And my example was what time a meeting begins.

  106. While we might care, we do, about your input and want to receive feedback,

  107. we still just have to make a decision at some point about what we think is the best time.

  108. Beloved, you don't want pure democracy in the life of our church.

  109. There is not enough time in your day for us to have the number of meetings we would have to have.

  110. You likely have no idea all of the details that have to be decided

  111. and all of the counsel that needs to be given.

  112. And you may think, well, I don't want to help decide everything.

  113. I just want to help decide the significant things.

  114. But what constitutes significant?

  115. And who decides what or when something is significant?

  116. If we were to operate this way, the whole matter would be just a mess.

  117. Recall the assertion I made previously,

  118. when a person or institution takes up a responsibility not granted to them

  119. or exercise an authority granted to them in a way not granted to them,

  120. it is at best ineffective.

  121. It is at worst abusive.

  122. And I know that none of us want to be abusive.

  123. Certainly we don't want to be ineffective.

  124. But I think that's where we find ourselves

  125. if we're not clear about how the church should function.

  126. So, our church believes that the most biblically faithful form of polity or governance

  127. is what is often called elder-led congregationalism.

  128. That's the term that we pick up and use.

  129. Elder-led congregationalism.

  130. And we can see both of these authoritative roles

  131. in our starting text for today's study.

  132. So join me in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  133. And we'll begin in verse 11 and read through verse 16.

  134. And he, being Christ, gave the apostles, the prophets,

  135. the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers

  136. to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  137. for building up the body of Christ,

  138. until we all attain to the unity of the faith

  139. and of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  140. to mature manhood,

  141. to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

  142. so that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by the waves

  143. and carried about by every wind of doctrine,

  144. by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  145. Rather, speaking the truth in love,

  146. we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head,

  147. into Christ,

  148. from whom the whole body,

  149. joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,

  150. when each part is working properly,

  151. makes the body grow

  152. so that it builds itself up

  153. in love.

  154. This is a really important text.

  155. It's a paramount text

  156. for us to understand

  157. how it is that the church

  158. is meant to function.

  159. In fact, I just wanted to show you,

  160. you may note that in my Bible,

  161. if you can see this,

  162. this is the page that is most likely to fall out first

  163. in this particular copy

  164. because I go to this text quite often.

  165. This text begins with Jesus Christ

  166. giving gifts to the church.

  167. You see this in verse 11.

  168. We see the apostles,

  169. the prophets,

  170. the evangelists,

  171. the shepherds,

  172. and teachers.

  173. Now, first I want to say,

  174. there's a lot of debate

  175. about what these gifts are

  176. and how they functioned

  177. and or function now.

  178. So I just want to give you a brief aside

  179. as I don't intend for this

  180. to be an exhaustive exposition

  181. of this passage.

  182. Remember, we're really talking about

  183. elder-led congregationalism.

  184. That's the focus.

  185. But I think it's helpful for us

  186. to see this just for a moment.

  187. I believe that the apostles and prophets

  188. that Paul is referring to

  189. were modern apostles and prophets

  190. of his day,

  191. not today,

  192. but of his day,

  193. who were in the process

  194. of writing the New Testament

  195. and the Old Testament prophets

  196. as the books of the Old Testament

  197. were often referred to

  198. as the prophets.

  199. Additionally,

  200. if you look back a bit

  201. at Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2:19

  202. verse 19 and 20,

  203. there Paul says this,

  204. So then you are no longer

  205. strangers and aliens,

  206. but you are fellow citizens

  207. with the saints

  208. and members

  209. of the household of God,

  210. built on the foundation

  211. of the apostles and prophets,

  212. Christ Jesus himself

  213. being the cornerstone.

  214. So, in their day,

  215. he's writing to the Ephesian Christians.

  216. I think he's saying,

  217. he's referring back to the prophets,

  218. the books you already have,

  219. as well as this new teaching

  220. that's being brought to you

  221. by the apostles, right?

  222. So, we have today

  223. the very same foundation

  224. for the church,

  225. the apostles and the prophets.

  226. I think what he's referring to

  227. in chapter 4 and verse 11,

  228. for us,

  229. are the Old and New Testaments.

  230. I think that's what he's talking about

  231. when he says the apostles

  232. and the prophets.

  233. We have the scripture.

  234. And we should not belittle that, right?

  235. That's not a light thing to have, right?

  236. But as I believe Paul is doing,

  237. we should magnify it

  238. as a gift to the church.

  239. So, Christ gave to us

  240. the scriptures

  241. and the evangelists

  242. and the shepherds and teachers.

  243. Many of you are using

  244. the same translation that I do

  245. to preach from the ESV.

  246. And you may note

  247. that each of these roles

  248. are separated

  249. by a comma.

  250. But not shepherds

  251. or you could think

  252. pastors here

  253. and teachers.

  254. Not pastors

  255. or shepherds and teachers.

  256. We know that ancient Greek

  257. did not have equivalent punctuation

  258. to our English,

  259. so this was a

  260. translative decision.

  261. The translators decided

  262. where they wanted

  263. to place those commas.

  264. And I am happy to say

  265. that the ESV translators

  266. are not anti-Oxford comma.

  267. If you are anti-Oxford comma,

  268. I would like to have

  269. a conversation with you later.

  270. I think they liked

  271. the Oxford comma

  272. and they left it out

  273. intentionally

  274. because the Greek word

  275. translated and

  276. can also be translated

  277. that is

  278. or in particular.

  279. So it could read

  280. shepherds,

  281. that is teachers,

  282. or shepherds

  283. in particular teachers,

  284. which is a little clunky

  285. in the English,

  286. but does give us

  287. a better idea

  288. of who these men are.

  289. So they merely

  290. leave it out.

  291. Shepherds

  292. and teachers.

  293. Many simply say

  294. that this could

  295. have been translated

  296. shepherd teachers

  297. or pastor teachers

  298. and we also understand

  299. these men

  300. to be elders.

  301. We have further evidence

  302. that this is Paul's meaning

  303. when he writes to Timothy

  304. in 1 Timothy chapter 5

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  305. and verse 17.

  306. There he says,

  307. let the elders

  308. who rule well

  309. be considered worthy

  310. of double honor,

  311. especially those

  312. who labor

  313. in preaching

  314. and teaching.

  315. He ties those activities

  316. together

  317. to the elder,

  318. the overseer.

  319. So evangelists

  320. and elders

  321. are gifts given

  322. to the church.

  323. They employ the Bible,

  324. but for what reason?

  325. And verse 12 tells us

  326. to equip the saints

  327. for the work of ministry,

  328. for building up

  329. the body of Christ.

  330. Now, once again,

  331. we have a translative

  332. decision being made

  333. because there are

  334. some commas

  335. placed in verse 12.

  336. In the translation

  337. I'm using,

  338. there's a comma

  339. right after the word

  340. ministry

  341. and there's a comma

  342. right after Christ.

  343. Some, though,

  344. have translated this

  345. and put a comma

  346. after the word

  347. saints.

  348. So,

  349. to equip the saints,

  350. comma,

  351. for the work of ministry,

  352. comma,

  353. for building up

  354. the body of Christ.

  355. And if you could just think,

  356. put on some grammar minds

  357. for just a moment

  358. and think behind saints.

  359. who is doing

  360. the work of ministry

  361. if we put a comma

  362. behind saints?

  363. It's evangelists

  364. and shepherd teachers.

  365. However,

  366. if you exclude it,

  367. the job of those evangelists

  368. and shepherd teachers

  369. is to equip the saints

  370. for the work of ministry

  371. and what follows

  372. at the end of the verse

  373. for building up

  374. the body of Christ

  375. is the point

  376. of that very ministry.

  377. It's modifying

  378. that idea.

  379. What is the work of ministry?

  380. It is the building up

  381. of the body

  382. of Christ.

  383. And so you would think,

  384. well then,

  385. how do we know?

  386. How are we to know?

  387. Well, the text gives us

  388. some really great clues.

  389. I think contextually,

  390. it's responsible

  391. to leave out

  392. that comma

  393. after saints.

  394. So let me read it again

  395. quickly to you

  396. and just point those things

  397. out to you.

  398. How do we know

  399. that the evangelist

  400. and the shepherd teacher

  401. employing the scripture

  402. is meant

  403. to train the church

  404. for the work of ministry,

  405. for this building up.

  406. Right?

  407. We see it starting

  408. in verse 13.

  409. Until,

  410. we're being built up,

  411. until we all attain

  412. to the unity of the faith

  413. and of the knowledge

  414. of the Son of God

  415. to mature manhood

  416. to the measure

  417. of the stature

  418. of the fullness

  419. of Christ

  420. so that we may

  421. no longer be children

  422. tossed to and fro

  423. by the waves

  424. and carried about

  425. by every wind of doctrine,

  426. by human cunning,

  427. by craftiness

  428. and deceitful schemes.

  429. Okay?

  430. So we don't want

  431. to be these

  432. immature Christians.

  433. We want to be

  434. mature Christians

  435. able to stand up

  436. to the counter-truth.

  437. Rather,

  438. speaking the truth

  439. in love,

  440. we are to grow up

  441. in every way

  442. into Him

  443. who is the head,

  444. into Christ.

  445. All of us

  446. speaking the truth

  447. in love,

  448. all of us

  449. growing.

  450. And if you're not

  451. with me yet,

  452. verse 16 says,

  453. from whom

  454. the whole body,

  455. Christ being the head,

  456. joined and held together

  457. by every joint

  458. with which it is equipped,

  459. when each part

  460. is working properly,

  461. makes the body grow

  462. so that it builds

  463. itself up

  464. in love.

  465. Right?

  466. That's the work

  467. of ministry

  468. that all of us

  469. together

  470. are ministering

  471. the gospel

  472. to all of us

  473. together

  474. so that all of us

  475. together

  476. grow into this maturity.

  477. I hope you can

  478. see that.

  479. Right?

  480. To equip the saints

  481. for the work

  482. of ministry,

  483. for building up

  484. the body

  485. of Christ.

  486. So as a

  487. member of this church,

  488. you have a role

  489. in this church.

  490. You're not

  491. a consumer.

  492. You don't just come

  493. and get served.

  494. You are meant

  495. to also

  496. serve others

  497. to this

  498. great end.

  499. So elders

  500. lead by

  501. teaching

  502. in word

  503. and in deed,

  504. giving theological

  505. foundation

  506. and exampled

  507. application

  508. so that the church

  509. as a whole

  510. does this

  511. work of ministry,

  512. this building up

  513. of the body

  514. of Christ.

  515. It also bears

  516. saying that the

  517. evangelists

  518. share the gospel,

  519. that the church

  520. would increase

  521. through conversions,

  522. and that the church

  523. as a whole

  524. would share the gospel

  525. for that same

  526. end.

  527. Now I said,

  528. we can see both

  529. of these authoritative

  530. roles in our

  531. starting text

  532. for today's study.

  533. I hope that I've

  534. sufficiently shown you

  535. the authority

  536. of counsel

  537. that an elder holds

  538. in such a way

  539. that you can see

  540. the same authority

  541. here,

  542. this persuasive

  543. authority.

  544. But what about

  545. the congregation?

  546. What about the congregation?

  547. The congregation

  548. or the church

  549. as a whole

  550. is doing

  551. two things

  552. in this text.

  553. We see them

  554. firstly,

  555. teaching the truth.

  556. They're teaching.

  557. They're teaching

  558. one another

  559. the truth.

  560. Verse 13 and 14,

  561. until we all

  562. attain the unity

  563. of the faith

  564. and the knowledge

  565. of the Son of God

  566. to mature manhood

  567. to the measure

  568. of the stature

  569. of the fullness

  570. of Christ

  571. so that we're

  572. no longer children

  573. tossed to and fro

  574. by the waves

  575. and carried about

  576. by every wind

  577. of doctrine,

  578. by human cunning,

  579. by craftiness

  580. and deceitful schemes.

  581. And beloved,

  582. there is so much

  583. out there

  584. pressing at our

  585. thinking from

  586. every single direction,

  587. maybe more

  588. than in any other

  589. generation

  590. because we have

  591. the internet.

  592. If you ask me

  593. if there's one thing

  594. I could do

  595. to bring about

  596. maturity in my church,

  597. I think I would say

  598. let's destroy

  599. the internet.

  600. I don't think

  601. it's been a net

  602. positive for

  603. the life of the church.

  604. And you perhaps

  605. yourself have felt that

  606. and maybe you've seen

  607. others tossed around.

  608. They hear a thing

  609. and it sounds good

  610. until they hear

  611. another thing

  612. that sounds good

  613. and those two things

  614. may run in direct

  615. contradiction

  616. to each other

  617. and we should be people

  618. who are so founded

  619. in God's word

  620. that we can discern

  621. all of that stuff

  622. that comes at us

  623. in the world around us.

  624. The enemy

  625. is seeking

  626. to erode

  627. the foundation

  628. of our faith.

  629. Human cunning,

  630. craftiness

  631. in deceitful schemes.

  632. And so

  633. we have to speak

  634. the truth

  635. to one another.

  636. And while

  637. the preaching

  638. of God's word

  639. on the Lord's day

  640. is extremely important

  641. to the life

  642. of a church,

  643. it's of major importance.

  644. It is the broadest

  645. discipling

  646. that we can do

  647. as a church.

  648. All of the little

  649. day-to-day stuff

  650. also matters.

  651. It all needs

  652. to be happening

  653. all the time

  654. if we're to stand

  655. against these waves

  656. that will come

  657. our way.

  658. So we see

  659. the congregation

  660. having been equipped

  661. to do it,

  662. turning around

  663. and doing

  664. that very same thing,

  665. teaching the truth.

  666. We also see

  667. them applying

  668. the truth.

  669. Verse 15 to 16,

  670. speaking the truth

  671. in love.

  672. We're to grow up

  673. in every way

  674. into him

  675. who is the head.

  676. We're to learn

  677. what it means

  678. to be a follower

  679. of Jesus Christ.

  680. Right?

  681. Not just in the gray matter

  682. between our ears,

  683. but in everything

  684. that we do.

  685. From whom

  686. the whole body

  687. joined and held together

  688. by every joint

  689. with which

  690. it is equipped.

  691. He's talking about

  692. you and me there.

  693. Every joint

  694. with which

  695. it is equipped.

  696. The whole body

  697. held together

  698. when each part

  699. is working

  700. properly

  701. makes the body

  702. grow

  703. so it builds

  704. itself up

  705. in love.

  706. I mean,

  707. there's just

  708. limitless activity

  709. packed within

  710. verse 16.

  711. All of the varied

  712. ways that God

  713. calls us

  714. to love

  715. and serve

  716. one another.

  717. So there's a teaching

  718. of the truth

  719. and there is

  720. an implying

  721. of the truth.

  722. the congregation,

  723. the church

  724. as a whole,

  725. is responsible

  726. for discipling

  727. and they are

  728. responsible

  729. for doctrine.

  730. This is that

  731. work of ministry,

  732. building up

  733. the body of Christ.

  734. I have told you

  735. that the congregation

  736. has the authority

  737. of command

  738. or coercion

  739. and I have told you

  740. that God delegates

  741. authority

  742. and that it always

  743. has limits

  744. and is always

  745. subservient

  746. to the one

  747. who delegated it.

  748. So I want to

  749. take you

  750. to some other

  751. text to show

  752. you that the

  753. two areas

  754. that the congregation

  755. holds authority

  756. in are discipline

  757. and doctrine.

  758. Let's think a bit

  759. together about

  760. those two

  761. and specifically

  762. how we're meant

  763. to carry them

  764. out.

  765. Now,

  766. if you've ever

  767. heard me talk

  768. about ecclesiology

  769. at all,

  770. you've heard me

  771. say this stuff,

  772. but nonetheless,

  773. let's be reminded

  774. together.

  775. So that first

  776. responsibility

  777. of discipling,

  778. turn with me

  779. to the book

  780. of Matthew.

  781. Let's start

  782. in chapter 28

  783. and verse 18.

  784. Three verses

  785. you may be

  786. familiar with.

  787. Make the point

  788. clear for us.

  789. And Jesus came

  790. and said to them,

  791. and I like that

  792. the word authority

  793. is here,

  794. all authority

  795. in heaven and on earth

  796. has been given

  797. to me.

  798. Go therefore,

  799. and he doesn't say

  800. I'm granting you

  801. authority to go,

  802. but he is in fact

  803. sending us

  804. and we find

  805. elsewhere that

  806. there's an authority

  807. that goes with us.

  808. Go therefore

  809. and make disciples

  810. of all nations.

  811. In all of your going,

  812. be about this work

  813. of teaching people

  814. how they're to

  815. follow me.

  816. Baptizing them,

  817. there we see the church

  818. at work in the ordinance

  819. of baptism in the name

  820. of the Father

  821. and of the Son

  822. and of the Holy Spirit.

  823. Teaching them

  824. to observe

  825. all that I have

  826. commanded you,

  827. to know it

  828. and to live it

  829. and behold,

  830. I'm with you

  831. always

  832. to the end

  833. of the age.

  834. So at the very outset

  835. we can see

  836. that the authority

  837. that we have

  838. has been granted

  839. to us

  840. and it

  841. accompanies

  842. us.

  843. Jesus' power

  844. goes with

  845. us

  846. when we go about

  847. this work

  848. of discipling.

  849. But there's a way

  850. that we are to go

  851. about this

  852. work.

  853. There's a process

  854. by which we are

  855. to teach people

  856. how to follow

  857. Christ.

  858. And I will say

  859. to you

  860. that this happens

  861. most readily

  862. in the life

  863. of a local

  864. congregation.

  865. I got in a

  866. friendly conversation

  867. with one of our

  868. campus ministry

  869. directors

  870. and what I was

  871. trying to say

  872. to him

  873. was he was

  874. stepping out of bounds

  875. for what a campus

  876. minister can really

  877. accomplish.

  878. And I was saying

  879. this as a kindness

  880. to him.

  881. He was overwhelmed

  882. with the work

  883. that he had

  884. on his plate.

  885. He had way

  886. too much

  887. going on.

  888. So I was trying

  889. to get him

  890. to dial back

  891. how much

  892. he felt like

  893. he needed

  894. to disciple

  895. college students.

  896. And I was making

  897. the case to him

  898. you need to help

  899. them be involved

  900. in a local church.

  901. This would be

  902. the best thing

  903. for those young

  904. people.

  905. And he just

  906. didn't seem

  907. to quite get it.

  908. And so I made

  909. the case to him

  910. I said I'm not

  911. saying that I

  912. personally

  913. can be a more

  914. effective minister

  915. of the gospel

  916. than you can be

  917. a minister

  918. of the gospel.

  919. In fact this

  920. man had much

  921. more training

  922. than I do.

  923. But I said

  924. there's no

  925. authority given

  926. to the campus

  927. ministry

  928. to disciple

  929. young people.

  930. The church

  931. has that

  932. authority

  933. to correct

  934. the sin

  935. in young people's

  936. lives.

  937. and his

  938. response to me

  939. which was

  940. just heartbreaking

  941. a Southern

  942. Baptist

  943. Seminary

  944. educated

  945. young man

  946. said well

  947. you're going

  948. to tend

  949. to disciple

  950. with discipline.

  951. Yep

  952. those words

  953. are the same.

  954. He said

  955. we're going

  956. to tend

  957. to disciple

  958. with grace.

  959. And it was

  960. such a shocking

  961. statement to me

  962. that I just

  963. kind of crumbled

  964. inside.

  965. I didn't even

  966. know really

  967. how to unpack

  968. such a

  969. statement.

  970. And it was

  971. just so clear

  972. that he

  973. misunderstood

  974. who has

  975. been granted

  976. the authority

  977. to teach

  978. all that I've

  979. commanded.

  980. To help

  981. these people

  982. to observe

  983. all of those

  984. things.

  985. So let me

  986. show you this

  987. further.

  988. Back up a few

  989. pages to

  990. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  991. 16.

  992. I'll begin

  993. reading in

  994. verse 13.

  995. Here we see

  996. Jesus ask

  997. a question.

  998. Verse 13

  999. says when

  1000. Jesus came

  1001. into the

  1002. district of

  1003. Caesarea

  1004. Philippi he

  1005. asked his

  1006. disciples who

  1007. do people

  1008. say that

  1009. the son of

  1010. man is?

  1011. And they

  1012. said some

  1013. say John

  1014. the Baptist

  1015. others say

  1016. Elijah and

  1017. others Jeremiah

  1018. or one of

  1019. the prophets.

  1020. He said to

  1021. them but who

  1022. do you say

  1023. that I am?

  1024. Simon Peter

  1025. replied you

  1026. are the

  1027. Christ the

  1028. son of the

  1029. living God.

  1030. Jesus answered

  1031. him blessed

  1032. are you Simon

  1033. Barjona for

  1034. flesh and

  1035. blood has

  1036. not revealed

  1037. this to

  1038. you but

  1039. my father

  1040. who is in

  1041. heaven.

  1042. And I tell

  1043. you you are

  1044. Peter and

  1045. on this rock

  1046. he's playing

  1047. with the

  1048. meaning of

  1049. the word

  1050. Peter but

  1051. I think he's

  1052. referring to

  1053. the thing

  1054. that Peter

  1055. has proclaimed

  1056. that he's

  1057. the Christ.

  1058. I will

  1059. build my

  1060. church and

  1061. the gates

  1062. of hell

  1063. shall not

  1064. prevail against

  1065. it.

  1066. You're probably

  1067. familiar with

  1068. that text but

  1069. what does

  1070. verse 19

  1071. say?

  1072. Something

  1073. curious.

  1074. He says I

  1075. will give

  1076. you the keys

  1077. of the kingdom

  1078. of heaven

  1079. and whatever

  1080. you bind on

  1081. earth shall

  1082. be bound

  1083. in heaven

  1084. and whatever

  1085. you loose

  1086. on earth

  1087. shall be

  1088. loosed in

  1089. heaven.

  1090. So there's

  1091. that tool

  1092. that I

  1093. mentioned

  1094. previously

  1095. that's given

  1096. to the

  1097. church and

  1098. I'm arguing

  1099. that that's

  1100. the church

  1101. as a whole

  1102. as a

  1103. congregation

  1104. is given

  1105. these keys

  1106. and we're

  1107. meant to be

  1108. doing a

  1109. work of

  1110. binding and

  1111. a work of

  1112. loosing.

  1113. But it

  1114. doesn't seem

  1115. to explain

  1116. what that is

  1117. in Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  1118. chapter 16.

  1119. And because

  1120. we often

  1121. read the

  1122. Bible far

  1123. too piecemeal

  1124. we are just

  1125. left shrugging

  1126. our shoulders.

  1127. What in the

  1128. world is he

  1129. talking about?

  1130. Keys?

  1131. Binding?

  1132. Loosing?

  1133. What?

  1134. Well, a few

  1135. short chapters

  1136. later in

  1137. Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  1138. chapter 18

  1139. we learn

  1140. exactly what

  1141. he's talking

  1142. about.

  1143. So turn

  1144. there.

  1145. Matthew

  1146. 18.

  1147. I'll begin

  1148. reading in

  1149. verse 15.

  1150. Before I

  1151. read this I

  1152. want to say

  1153. this is a

  1154. picture of

  1155. discipling work

  1156. in the

  1157. church.

  1158. I sometimes

  1159. get tired of

  1160. people using

  1161. this just to

  1162. refer to what

  1163. they would say

  1164. church discipline

  1165. and that is to

  1166. put somebody out

  1167. of the church.

  1168. This is more

  1169. than that.

  1170. So hear it

  1171. with me.

  1172. Beginning

  1173. verse 15.

  1174. If your

  1175. brother sins

  1176. against you

  1177. go and tell

  1178. him it's

  1179. fault between

  1180. you and him

  1181. alone.

  1182. If he

  1183. listens to

  1184. you you have

  1185. gained your

  1186. brother.

  1187. He's saying

  1188. if somebody

  1189. who professes

  1190. to be a

  1191. Christian is

  1192. acting in a

  1193. way that is

  1194. contrary to

  1195. that confession

  1196. go and tell

  1197. them.

  1198. Help them to

  1199. see it.

  1200. And if he

  1201. hears you if

  1202. he heeds what

  1203. you're saying

  1204. which would

  1205. lead to

  1206. repentance and

  1207. faith you

  1208. have gained

  1209. your brother.

  1210. We have seen

  1211. that his

  1212. confession is

  1213. true.

  1214. That kind

  1215. of discipling

  1216. work happens

  1217. all the

  1218. time in

  1219. the life

  1220. of a

  1221. healthy

  1222. church.

  1223. It's

  1224. happening

  1225. constantly.

  1226. Verse 16.

  1227. But if he

  1228. does not

  1229. listen take

  1230. one or two

  1231. others along

  1232. with you that

  1233. every charge

  1234. may be

  1235. established by

  1236. the evidence

  1237. of two or

  1238. three witnesses.

  1239. You're taking

  1240. some further

  1241. opinion along.

  1242. We all see

  1243. this the very

  1244. same way.

  1245. Look at the

  1246. text.

  1247. It's very

  1248. clear that

  1249. you're living

  1250. in contradiction

  1251. to this

  1252. command.

  1253. You pile up

  1254. on him for

  1255. his good.

  1256. Verse 17.

  1257. If he refuses

  1258. to listen to

  1259. them tell it

  1260. to the church.

  1261. Here it is.

  1262. The congregation.

  1263. Those gathered.

  1264. And if he

  1265. refuses to

  1266. listen even

  1267. to the

  1268. church let

  1269. him be to

  1270. you as a

  1271. Gentile and

  1272. a tax collector.

  1273. an outsider.

  1274. So there's

  1275. four steps

  1276. going on here.

  1277. Repentance and

  1278. faith.

  1279. A possibility

  1280. at every step.

  1281. And cut up the

  1282. final one where

  1283. you say we

  1284. once thought you

  1285. were in Christ

  1286. but now as

  1287. far as we can

  1288. tell you no

  1289. longer are.

  1290. Your life does

  1291. not line up to

  1292. the profession

  1293. that you

  1294. make.

  1295. Now.

  1296. Verse 18.

  1297. Look at the

  1298. phrasing.

  1299. Truly I say

  1300. to you

  1301. whatever you

  1302. bind on earth

  1303. shall be bound

  1304. in heaven.

  1305. And whatever

  1306. you loose

  1307. on earth

  1308. shall be

  1309. loosed

  1310. in heaven.

  1311. So the

  1312. keys

  1313. to the

  1314. kingdom

  1315. are this

  1316. very careful

  1317. work we

  1318. do of

  1319. bringing people

  1320. into the

  1321. life of the

  1322. church.

  1323. The ordinance

  1324. that accompanies

  1325. that is

  1326. baptism.

  1327. Doing the

  1328. work of

  1329. correcting sin

  1330. in their

  1331. life that

  1332. their confession

  1333. and their

  1334. life lines

  1335. up together

  1336. in ever

  1337. increasing

  1338. ways.

  1339. things.

  1340. And in

  1341. some

  1342. tragic

  1343. cases

  1344. for the

  1345. good of

  1346. that

  1347. person

  1348. and the

  1349. witness

  1350. of the

  1351. church

  1352. seeing

  1353. them

  1354. out

  1355. of the

  1356. life

  1357. of the

  1358. church.

  1359. That

  1360. is the

  1361. keys

  1362. to the

  1363. kingdom.

  1364. This is the

  1365. discipling

  1366. work that

  1367. belongs to

  1368. the congregation

  1369. as a whole.

  1370. thing.

  1371. So when

  1372. somebody asks

  1373. me what I

  1374. say when

  1375. I mean

  1376. I'm a

  1377. congregationalist

  1378. pure

  1379. democracy

  1380. is not

  1381. what pops

  1382. into my

  1383. head.

  1384. Voting

  1385. on every

  1386. single

  1387. thing that

  1388. we are

  1389. going to

  1390. do as

  1391. a church.

  1392. This is

  1393. what I'm

  1394. thinking

  1395. about.

  1396. This

  1397. really

  1398. important

  1399. work of

  1400. helping

  1401. people

  1402. mature

  1403. in

  1404. Christ.

  1405. Making

  1406. sure that

  1407. their

  1408. confession

  1409. is a

  1410. true

  1411. confession.

  1412. That

  1413. they

  1414. would

  1415. be

  1416. preserved

  1417. to

  1418. the

  1419. end.

  1420. What

  1421. a

  1422. task.

  1423. I

  1424. began

  1425. talking

  1426. about

  1427. this

  1428. with

  1429. the

  1430. great

  1431. commission

  1432. because

  1433. I

  1434. wanted

  1435. you

  1436. to

  1437. be

  1438. reminded

  1439. that

  1440. Jesus

  1441. says

  1442. that

  1443. all

  1444. authority

  1445. belongs

  1446. to

  1447. him

  1448. and

  1449. he

  1450. is

  1451. with

  1452. us

  1453. because

  1454. this

  1455. is

  1456. a

  1457. big

  1458. task.

  1459. Join

  1460. me if

  1461. they're

  1462. like

  1463. I'm

  1464. going to

  1465. move

  1466. really

  1467. fast

  1468. so you

  1469. may

  1470. not

  1471. care

  1472. to

  1473. but

  1474. he

  1475. says

  1476. there

  1477. and

  1478. there's

  1479. been

  1480. some

  1481. rather

  1482. horrific

  1483. sexual

  1484. things

  1485. going

  1486. on

  1487. in

  1488. the

  1489. life

  1490. of

  1491. this

  1492. church

  1493. and

  1494. there

  1495. he

  1496. says

  1497. beginning

  1498. in

  1499. verse

  1500. three

  1501. for

  1502. though

  1503. absent

  1504. in

  1505. body

  1506. I

  1507. am

  1508. present

  1509. in

  1510. spirit

  1511. and

  1512. as

  1513. if

  1514. present

  1515. I

  1516. have

  1517. already

  1518. pronounced

  1519. judgment

  1520. on the

  1521. one

  1522. who

  1523. did

  1524. such

  1525. a

  1526. thing

  1527. when

  1528. you

  1529. are

  1530. assembled

  1531. in

  1532. the

  1533. name

  1534. of

  1535. the

  1536. Lord

  1537. Jesus

  1538. and

  1539. my

  1540. spirit

  1541. is

  1542. present

  1543. with

  1544. the

  1545. power

  1546. of

  1547. the

  1548. Lord

  1549. Jesus

  1550. you

  1551. are

  1552. to

  1553. deliver

  1554. this

  1555. man

  1556. to

  1557. Satan

  1558. for

  1559. the

  1560. destruction

  1561. of

  1562. the

  1563. flesh

  1564. so

  1565. that

  1566. his

  1567. spirit

  1568. may

  1569. be

  1570. saved

  1571. in

  1572. the

  1573. day

  1574. of

  1575. the

  1576. Lord

  1577. what

  1578. he's

  1579. communicating

  1580. is

  1581. that

  1582. you're

  1583. supposed

  1584. to

  1585. take

  1586. sin

  1587. so

  1588. seriously

  1589. that

  1590. when

  1591. a

  1592. person

  1593. lives

  1594. in

  1595. contradiction

  1596. to

  1597. their

  1598. confession

  1599. you

  1600. put

  1601. them

  1602. out

  1603. of

  1604. the

  1605. church

  1606. that

  1607. they

  1608. would

  1609. see

  1610. the

  1611. seriousness

  1612. of

  1613. their

  1614. sin

  1615. there's

  1616. the

  1617. hope

  1618. that

  1619. they

  1620. see

  1621. !

  1622. I

  1623. I

  1624. think

  1625. was

  1626. a

  1627. familial

  1628. thing

  1629. so

  1630. perhaps

  1631. you're

  1632. not

  1633. even

  1634. going

  1635. to

  1636. have

  1637. a

  1638. meal

  1639. with

  1640. this

  1641. person

  1642. because

  1643. you

  1644. want

  1645. to

  1646. be

  1647. so

  1648. clear

  1649. about

  1650. their

  1651. status

  1652. with

  1653. the

  1654. Lord

  1655. he

  1656. says

  1657. for

  1658. what

  1659. have

  1660. I

  1661. to

  1662. do

  1663. with

  1664. judging

  1665. outsiders

  1666. is it

  1667. not

  1668. those

  1669. inside

  1670. the

  1671. church

  1672. whom

  1673. you

  1674. are

  1675. to

  1676. judge

  1677. God

  1678. judges

  1679. those

  1680. outside

  1681. purge

  1682. the

  1683. evil

  1684. person

  1685. from

  1686. among

  1687. you

  1688. so

  1689. this

  1690. work

  1691. is

  1692. an

  1693. incredibly

  1694. important

  1695. work

  1696. for the

  1697. good

  1698. of the

  1699. individual

  1700. for the

  1701. witness

  1702. of the

  1703. church

  1704. and it

  1705. is a

  1706. responsibility

  1707. and an

  1708. authority

  1709. that belongs

  1710. to the

  1711. entire

  1712. congregation

  1713. so

  1714. what

  1715. happens

  1716. in my

  1717. previous

  1718. example

  1719. of a

  1720. college

  1721. student

  1722. who's

  1723. only

  1724. getting

  1725. any

  1726. spiritual

  1727. direction

  1728. from a

  1729. college

  1730. ministry

  1731. which

  1732. college

  1733. ministries

  1734. have

  1735. their

  1736. place

  1737. don't

  1738. hear me

  1739. say

  1740. they

  1741. don't

  1742. but

  1743. if

  1744. that's

  1745. the

  1746. only

  1747. place

  1748. it's

  1749. coming

  1750. from

  1751. everything

  1752. is

  1753. great

  1754. until

  1755. he

  1756. doesn't

  1757. like

  1758. something

  1759. that

  1760. he's

  1761. told

  1762. hey

  1763. man

  1764. you

  1765. can't

  1766. be

  1767. doing

  1768. that

  1769. with

  1770. your

  1771. girlfriend

  1772. and he

  1773. goes

  1774. I'll do

  1775. what I

  1776. want

  1777. there's

  1778. no

  1779. authority

  1780. granted

  1781. to

  1782. that

  1783. organization

  1784. to do

  1785. anything

  1786. to follow

  1787. up

  1788. but the

  1789. church

  1790. has

  1791. a response

  1792. to

  1793. unrepentant

  1794. sin

  1795. and this

  1796. is very

  1797. very good

  1798. for people

  1799. if

  1800. you

  1801. are

  1802. a

  1803. Christ

  1804. follower

  1805. you

  1806. ought

  1807. to

  1808. want

  1809. to

  1810. submit

  1811. yourself

  1812. to

  1813. that

  1814. kind

  1815. of

  1816. authority

  1817. I

  1818. need

  1819. it

  1820. in

  1821. my

  1822. life

  1823. I

  1824. am

  1825. blind

  1826. to

  1827. my

  1828. sin

  1829. sometimes

  1830. and I

  1831. need

  1832. to be

  1833. shown

  1834. it

  1835. and

  1836. I

  1837. hope

  1838. that I'm

  1839. a

  1840. first

  1841. step

  1842. discipline

  1843. kind

  1844. of

  1845. guy

  1846. I

  1847. want

  1848. to

  1849. just

  1850. live

  1851. in

  1852. verse

  1853. 15

  1854. I

  1855. don't

  1856. want

  1857. to

  1858. go

  1859. any

  1860. place

  1861. else

  1862. beyond

  1863. that

  1864. when

  1865. I'm

  1866. the

  1867. person

  1868. being

  1869. corrected

  1870. I

  1871. in

  1872. the

  1873. life

  1874. of

  1875. our

  1876. church

  1877. but

  1878. if

  1879. I'm

  1880. not

  1881. willing

  1882. to

  1883. repent

  1884. oh

  1885. I

  1886. hope

  1887. because

  1888. sin

  1889. is

  1890. serious

  1891. and

  1892. I

  1893. want

  1894. to

  1895. persevere

  1896. to

  1897. the

  1898. end

  1899. I

  1900. want

  1901. this

  1902. good

  1903. authority

  1904. of the

  1905. congregation

  1906. for

  1907. me

  1908. so

  1909. back

  1910. in our

  1911. text

  1912. draw

  1913. your

  1914. mind

  1915. to

  1916. it

  1917. Ephesians

  1918. 4

  1919. all

  1920. of

  1921. this

  1922. language

  1923. about

  1924. us

  1925. attaining

  1926. the

  1927. unity

  1928. of

  1929. the

  1930. faith

  1931. the

  1932. knowledge

  1933. of

  1934. the

  1935. mature

  1936. manhood

  1937. the

  1938. measure

  1939. of

  1940. the

  1941. stature

  1942. of

  1943. the

  1944. fullness

  1945. of

  1946. Christ

  1947. so

  1948. we're

  1949. no

  1950. longer

  1951. children

  1952. tossed

  1953. to

  1954. and

  1955. fro

  1956. by

  1957. every

  1958. wind

  1959. of

  1960. doctrine

  1961. by

  1962. every

  1963. human

  1964. cunning

  1965. and

  1966. deceitful

  1967. scheme

  1968. all of

  1969. this

  1970. stuff

  1971. this

  1972. is

  1973. that

  1974. careful

  1975. work

  1976. that

  1977. we're

  1978. doing

  1979. in

  1980. the

  1981. life

  1982. of

  1983. the

  1984. church

  1985. right

  1986. and

  1987. this

  1988. has

  1989. been

  1990. given

  1991. to

  1992. us

  1993. this

  1994. authority

  1995. because

  1996. God

  1997. loves

  1998. us

  1999. and

  2000. he

  2001. loves

  2002. the

  2003. purity

  2004. of

  2005. his

  2006. church

  2007. on

  2008. the

  2009. back

  2010. of

  2011. your

  2012. bulletin

  2013. is

  2014. a

  2015. quote

  2016. from

  2017. William

  2018. Gurnall

  2019. I'll

  2020. encourage

  2021. you to

  2022. look

  2023. him

  2024. up

  2025. he

  2026. said

  2027. God

  2028. would

  2029. not

  2030. rub

  2031. so

  2032. hard

  2033. if

  2034. it

  2035. were

  2036. not

  2037. to

  2038. fetch

  2039. out

  2040. the

  2041. dirt

  2042. that

  2043. is

  2044. ingrained

  2045. in

  2046. our

  2047. natures

  2048. God

  2049. loves

  2050. purity

  2051. so

  2052. well

  2053. that

  2054. he

  2055. would

  2056. rather

  2057. see

  2058. a

  2059. hole

  2060. than

  2061. a

  2062. spot

  2063. in

  2064. his

  2065. child's

  2066. garments

  2067. it's

  2068. not

  2069. always

  2070. easy

  2071. to

  2072. exercise

  2073. this

  2074. authority

  2075. or

  2076. to

  2077. submit

  2078. to

  2079. this

  2080. type

  2081. of

  2082. authority

  2083. but

  2084. if

  2085. it's

  2086. being

  2087. properly

  2088. exercised

  2089. it is

  2090. for

  2091. our

  2092. eternal

  2093. good

  2094. so

  2095. authority

  2096. what

  2097. follows

  2098. authority

  2099. for

  2100. discipline

  2101. what

  2102. follows

  2103. from

  2104. that

  2105. is

  2106. doctrine

  2107. right

  2108. if

  2109. we're

  2110. to

  2111. teach

  2112. people

  2113. all

  2114. that

  2115. Jesus

  2116. has

  2117. commanded

  2118. what

  2119. are

  2120. we

  2121. supposed

  2122. to

  2123. be

  2124. teaching

  2125. Galatians

    Galatians 1:8

  2126. chapter 1

  2127. verse 8

  2128. and 9

  2129. Paul said

  2130. this

  2131. but

  2132. even

  2133. if

  2134. we

  2135. or

  2136. an

  2137. angel

  2138. from

  2139. heaven

  2140. should

  2141. preach

  2142. to

  2143. you

  2144. a

  2145. gospel

  2146. contrary

  2147. to

  2148. the

  2149. one

  2150. we

  2151. preach

  2152. to

  2153. you

  2154. let

  2155. him

  2156. be

  2157. accursed

  2158. as

  2159. we

  2160. have

  2161. said

  2162. before

  2163. now

  2164. I

  2165. say

  2166. again

  2167. if

  2168. anyone

  2169. is

  2170. preaching

  2171. to

  2172. you

  2173. a

  2174. gospel

  2175. contrary

  2176. to

  2177. the

  2178. one

  2179. you

  2180. teaching

  2181. the

  2182. wrong

  2183. doctrine

  2184. needs

  2185. to

  2186. be

  2187. corrected

  2188. the

  2189. truth

  2190. must

  2191. be

  2192. preserved

  2193. and

  2194. it

  2195. must

  2196. be

  2197. defended

  2198. David

  2199. Gibson

  2200. in an

  2201. article

  2202. entitled

  2203. assumed

  2204. evangelicalism

  2205. some

  2206. reflections

  2207. in route

  2208. to denying

  2209. the

  2210. gospel

  2211. he

  2212. said

  2213. this

  2214. you

  2215. may

  2216. have

  2217. heard

  2218. the

  2219. story

  2220. of

  2221. the

  2222. Mennonite

  2223. brethren

  2224. movement

  2225. one

  2226. particular

  2227. analysis

  2228. goes

  2229. like

  2230. this

  2231. the

  2232. first

  2233. generation

  2234. believed

  2235. and

  2236. proclaimed

  2237. the

  2238. gospel

  2239. and

  2240. thought

  2241. that

  2242. they

  2243. were

  2244. certain

  2245. social

  2246. entailments

  2247. conclusions

  2248. the

  2249. next

  2250. generation

  2251. assumed

  2252. the

  2253. gospel

  2254. and

  2255. advocated

  2256. the

  2257. entailments

  2258. the

  2259. third

  2260. generation

  2261. denied

  2262. the

  2263. gospel

  2264. and

  2265. all

  2266. that

  2267. were

  2268. left

  2269. were

  2270. the

  2271. entailments

  2272. so

  2273. preached

  2274. it

  2275. assumed

  2276. it

  2277. forgot

  2278. it

  2279. we

  2280. have

  2281. to be

  2282. so

  2283. careful

  2284. not

  2285. to

  2286. do

  2287. this

  2288. very

  2289. thing

  2290. and

  2291. this

  2292. is

  2293. a

  2294. congregational

  2295. responsibility

  2296. this

  2297. includes

  2298. elders

  2299. giving

  2300. leadership

  2301. to

  2302. it

  2303. but

  2304. it

  2305. also

  2306. includes

  2307. you

  2308. it

  2309. it

  2310. it

  2311. is

  2312. always

  2313. a

  2314. shuddering

  2315. thing

  2316. to

  2317. read

  2318. chapter

  2319. 20

  2320. verse

  2321. 28

  2322. through

  2323. 30

  2324. where

  2325. Paul

  2326. saying

  2327. his

  2328. farewell

  2329. to

  2330. the

  2331. Ephesian

  2332. elders

  2333. and

  2334. he

  2335. says

  2336. pay

  2337. careful

  2338. attention

  2339. to

  2340. yourselves

  2341. and

  2342. to

  2343. all

  2344. the

  2345. flock

  2346. in

  2347. which

  2348. the

  2349. Holy

  2350. Spirit

  2351. has

  2352. made

  2353. you

  2354. overseers

  2355. to

  2356. care

  2357. for

  2358. the

  2359. church

  2360. of

  2361. God

  2362. which

  2363. he

  2364. obtained

  2365. !

  2366. with

  2367. his

  2368. own

  2369. blood

  2370. I

  2371. read

  2372. that

  2373. text

  2374. to

  2375. you

  2376. last

  2377. week

  2378. and

  2379. he

  2380. says

  2381. this

  2382. I

  2383. know

  2384. that

  2385. after

  2386. my

  2387. departure

  2388. fierce

  2389. wolves

  2390. will

  2391. come

  2392. in

  2393. among

  2394. you

  2395. not

  2396. sparing

  2397. the

  2398. flock

  2399. so

  2400. there's

  2401. a

  2402. there's

  2403. a

  2404. defense

  2405. thing

  2406. happening

  2407. that

  2408. that

  2409. that

  2410. untrue

  2411. things

  2412. are

  2413. going

  2414. to

  2415. come

  2416. in

  2417. from

  2418. the

  2419. outside

  2420. and

  2421. then

  2422. he

  2423. says

  2424. in

  2425. verse

  2426. 30

  2427. and

  2428. for

  2429. among

  2430. your

  2431. own

  2432. selves

  2433. will

  2434. rise

  2435. men

  2436. speaking

  2437. twisted

  2438. things

  2439. to

  2440. draw

  2441. away

  2442. the

  2443. disciples

  2444. after

  2445. them

  2446. so

  2447. all

  2448. of

  2449. us

  2450. every

  2451. one

  2452. of

  2453. us

  2454. needs

  2455. to

  2456. be

  2457. vigilant

  2458. in

  2459. protecting

  2460. doctrine

  2461. Jude

  2462. writes

  2463. in

  2464. verse

  2465. 3

  2466. and

  2467. 4

  2468. of

  2469. his

  2470. lever

  2471. beloved

  2472. although

  2473. I

  2474. was

  2475. very

  2476. eager

  2477. to

  2478. write

  2479. to

  2480. you

  2481. about

  2482. our

  2483. common

  2484. salvation

  2485. I

  2486. found

  2487. it

  2488. necessary

  2489. to

  2490. write

  2491. appealing

  2492. to

  2493. you

  2494. to

  2495. contend

  2496. for

  2497. the

  2498. faith

  2499. that

  2500. was

  2501. once

  2502. for

  2503. all

  2504. delivered

  2505. to

  2506. the

  2507. saints

  2508. for

  2509. certain

  2510. people

  2511. have

  2512. crept

  2513. in

  2514. unnoticed

  2515. who

  2516. long

  2517. ago

  2518. were

  2519. designated

  2520. for

  2521. this

  2522. condemnation

  2523. ungodly

  2524. people

  2525. who

  2526. pervert

  2527. the grace

  2528. of our

  2529. God

  2530. into

  2531. sensuality

  2532. and deny

  2533. our only

  2534. master

  2535. and Lord

  2536. Jesus

  2537. Christ

  2538. so you

  2539. see

  2540. people

  2541. coming in

  2542. not

  2543. living

  2544. consistent

  2545. with their

  2546. confession

  2547. and

  2548. changing

  2549. that

  2550. confession

  2551. all

  2552. together

  2553. so we

  2554. are to

  2555. protect

  2556. preserve

  2557. defend

  2558. the truth

  2559. all of

  2560. us

  2561. to do

  2562. this

  2563. work

  2564. in

  2565. what

  2566. measure

  2567. what

  2568. doctrines

  2569. must

  2570. we

  2571. defend

  2572. what

  2573. convictions

  2574. do

  2575. we

  2576. contend

  2577. for

  2578. we

  2579. certainly

  2580. don't

  2581. want

  2582. to

  2583. come

  2584. together

  2585. and

  2586. do

  2587. this

  2588. work

  2589. and

  2590. try

  2591. to

  2592. work

  2593. out

  2594. every

  2595. little

  2596. tiny

  2597. particular

  2598. oh

  2599. what a

  2600. mess

  2601. that

  2602. might

  2603. be

  2604. and

  2605. here's

  2606. where

  2607. and I'll

  2608. spare you

  2609. today

  2610. because I'm

  2611. noticing

  2612. the time

  2613. present to

  2614. you the

  2615. idea of

  2616. theological

  2617. triage

  2618. if you've

  2619. been

  2620. around

  2621. you've

  2622. heard me

  2623. talk

  2624. about

  2625. this

  2626. before

  2627. if you've

  2628. not

  2629. I've

  2630. got

  2631. time

  2632. after

  2633. we're

  2634. done

  2635. I'd

  2636. be

  2637. happy

  2638. to

  2639. share

  2640. it

  2641. with

  2642. you

  2643. but

  2644. what

  2645. I

  2646. think

  2647. we

  2648. need

  2649. to

  2650. be

  2651. applying

  2652. from

  2653. this

  2654. idea

  2655. of

  2656. theological

  2657. triage

  2658. is

  2659. really

  2660. defending

  2661. those

  2662. doctrines

  2663. that are

  2664. necessary

  2665. for

  2666. salvation

  2667. an example

  2668. justification

  2669. by grace

  2670. alone

  2671. through

  2672. faith

  2673. alone

  2674. in

  2675. Christ

  2676. alone

  2677. pride

  2678. out

  2679. of

  2680. my

  2681. dead

  2682. hands

  2683. this

  2684. is

  2685. the

  2686. hill

  2687. that

  2688. I

  2689. will

  2690. die

  2691. on

  2692. as

  2693. a

  2694. congregation

  2695. we

  2696. need

  2697. to

  2698. stand

  2699. on

  2700. that

  2701. hill

  2702. together

  2703. and

  2704. that

  2705. is

  2706. a

  2707. doctrine

  2708. that's

  2709. being

  2710. destroyed

  2711. around

  2712. us

  2713. this

  2714. morning

  2715. all over

  2716. the place

  2717. this morning

  2718. in churches

  2719. it's being

  2720. destroyed

  2721. justification

  2722. by grace

  2723. alone

  2724. through

  2725. faith

  2726. alone

  2727. in

  2728. Christ

  2729. alone

  2730. that

  2731. people

  2732. would

  2733. be

  2734. saved

  2735. as

  2736. an

  2737. example

  2738. also

  2739. secondary

  2740. doctrines

  2741. those

  2742. things

  2743. that we

  2744. believe

  2745. that we

  2746. should

  2747. agree

  2748. upon

  2749. to

  2750. fellowship

  2751. as a

  2752. local

  2753. congregation

  2754. what

  2755. will

  2756. we

  2757. call

  2758. sin

  2759. and

  2760. not

  2761. call

  2762. sin

  2763. and

  2764. there's

  2765. a

  2766. number

  2767. of

  2768. complicated

  2769. matters

  2770. to

  2771. think

  2772. about

  2773. the

  2774. simplest

  2775. example

  2776. is

  2777. baptism

  2778. how do

  2779. we

  2780. practice

  2781. such a

  2782. thing

  2783. more

  2784. complicated

  2785. ones

  2786. what do

  2787. we

  2788. think

  2789. about

  2790. divorce

  2791. and

  2792. remarriage

  2793. And we

  2794. have to

  2795. be careful

  2796. about that

  2797. right?

  2798. Because

  2799. we

  2800. collectively

  2801. may have

  2802. to approach

  2803. somebody

  2804. that we

  2805. think

  2806. is

  2807. sinning

  2808. and we

  2809. don't

  2810. want to

  2811. be

  2812. split

  2813. down

  2814. the

  2815. middle

  2816. about

  2817. what we

  2818. think

  2819. about

  2820. this

  2821. what a

  2822. difficult

  2823. thing

  2824. to disciple

  2825. somebody

  2826. if we're

  2827. all on

  2828. a

  2829. different

  2830. page

  2831. on such

  2832. an

  2833. issue

  2834. So those

  2835. types

  2836. of things

  2837. are

  2838. gathered

  2839. into

  2840. what are

  2841. most often

  2842. called

  2843. confessions

  2844. statements

  2845. of faith

  2846. creeds

  2847. etc

  2848. We

  2849. are

  2850. confessional

  2851. people

  2852. Now

  2853. if somebody

  2854. ever asks

  2855. you if

  2856. your church

  2857. is confessional

  2858. you should

  2859. ask them

  2860. what they

  2861. mean

  2862. by that

  2863. But

  2864. we are

  2865. in fact

  2866. confessional

  2867. because we

  2868. believe

  2869. that it is

  2870. important to

  2871. make truth

  2872. claims

  2873. concerning

  2874. what the

  2875. Bible

  2876. teaches

  2877. on any

  2878. particular

  2879. topic

  2880. You have

  2881. to make

  2882. truth

  2883. claims

  2884. Some

  2885. people will

  2886. say

  2887. things like

  2888. no creed

  2889. but Christ

  2890. which I

  2891. think is

  2892. funny

  2893. because that

  2894. itself

  2895. is a

  2896. creed

  2897. That's a

  2898. statement

  2899. of truth

  2900. We think

  2901. it's

  2902. important

  2903. to say

  2904. what does

  2905. the Bible

  2906. teach

  2907. on

  2908. particular

  2909. things

  2910. Our

  2911. congregational

  2912. recitations

  2913. on Sunday

  2914. morning

  2915. are an

  2916. expression

  2917. of

  2918. this

  2919. belief

  2920. We

  2921. call

  2922. and

  2923. respond

  2924. through

  2925. historic

  2926. confessions

  2927. and

  2928. catechisms

  2929. that we

  2930. are in

  2931. agreement

  2932. with

  2933. and

  2934. currently

  2935. we're

  2936. reciting

  2937. our

  2938. own

  2939. current

  2940. statement

  2941. of

  2942. faith

  2943. Wonderful

  2944. thing

  2945. What

  2946. do we

  2947. believe

  2948. about

  2949. such

  2950. and

  2951. such

  2952. Now

  2953. some

  2954. of

  2955. you

  2956. know

  2957. and

  2958. many

  2959. of

  2960. you

  2961. don't

  2962. right

  2963. now

  2964. your

  2965. elders

  2966. are

  2967. working

  2968. on

  2969. a

  2970. more

  2971. robust

  2972. statement

  2973. of

  2974. faith

  2975. because

  2976. we

  2977. think

  2978. it's

  2979. going

  2980. to

  2981. be

  2982. important

  2983. for

  2984. us

  2985. to

  2986. more

  2987. clearly

  2988. define

  2989. what

  2990. we

  2991. think

  2992. the

  2993. Bible

  2994. teaches

  2995. on

  2996. a

  2997. number

  2998. of

  2999. topics

  3000. as

  3001. this

  3002. age

  3003. continues

  3004. to

  3005. get

  3006. harder

  3007. And

  3008. harder!

  3009. And

  3010. guess

  3011. what?

  3012. You

  3013. get

  3014. to

  3015. be

  3016. involved

  3017. in

  3018. that

  3019. whole

  3020. process

  3021. But

  3022. in

  3023. our

  3024. elder

  3025. led

  3026. congregationalism

  3027. we're

  3028. giving

  3029. leadership

  3030. to it

  3031. We're

  3032. working

  3033. hard

  3034. to

  3035. start

  3036. with

  3037. a

  3038. historic

  3039. document

  3040. we're

  3041. working

  3042. hard

  3043. to

  3044. make

  3045. what

  3046. we

  3047. believe

  3048. are

  3049. appropriate

  3050. changes

  3051. to that

  3052. document

  3053. We're

  3054. going

  3055. to

  3056. bring

  3057. it

  3058. to

  3059. you

  3060. and

  3061. ask

  3062. you

  3063. to

  3064. pour

  3065. over

  3066. it

  3067. and

  3068. ask

  3069. questions

  3070. and

  3071. come

  3072. back

  3073. and

  3074. it

  3075. could

  3076. be

  3077. terrible

  3078. but

  3079. I

  3080. also

  3081. want

  3082. to

  3083. suggest

  3084. it

  3085. could

  3086. be

  3087. a

  3088. joy

  3089. that

  3090. we

  3091. would

  3092. open

  3093. the

  3094. word

  3095. together

  3096. and

  3097. see

  3098. what

  3099. God

  3100. has

  3101. !

  3102. So

  3103. these

  3104. two

  3105. areas

  3106. are

  3107. together

  3108. is

  3109. for

  3110. discipling

  3111. and

  3112. for

  3113. doctrine

  3114. So

  3115. what does

  3116. that look

  3117. like

  3118. in action?

  3119. You see

  3120. it all

  3121. the time

  3122. Sermons

  3123. preached

  3124. classes

  3125. taught

  3126. Discipling

  3127. relationships

  3128. where the

  3129. Bible

  3130. is read

  3131. and studied

  3132. and applied

  3133. Earnest

  3134. prayer

  3135. for one

  3136. another

  3137. Burdens

  3138. born

  3139. Weeping

  3140. together

  3141. Rejoicing

  3142. together

  3143. Food

  3144. provided

  3145. Sin

  3146. confronted

  3147. and

  3148. corrected

  3149. Discipline

  3150. processes

  3151. carried

  3152. out

  3153. and

  3154. sadly

  3155. from

  3156. time

  3157. to

  3158. time

  3159. to

  3160. their

  3161. very

  3162. end

  3163. Evangelism

  3164. and

  3165. missions

  3166. Welcoming

  3167. new

  3168. members

  3169. through

  3170. the

  3171. ordinance

  3172. of

  3173. baptism

  3174. Celebrating

  3175. the

  3176. Lord's

  3177. Supper

  3178. together

  3179. each

  3180. Lord's

  3181. Day

  3182. Confessionalism

  3183. and all

  3184. that it

  3185. entails

  3186. doing

  3187. the

  3188. exercise

  3189. of

  3190. careful

  3191. theological

  3192. triage

  3193. in the

  3194. life

  3195. of our

  3196. church

  3197. I

  3198. could

  3199. go

  3200. on

  3201. but

  3202. note

  3203. that

  3204. you

  3205. the

  3206. congregation

  3207. the

  3208. church

  3209. as a

  3210. whole

  3211. have a

  3212. profound

  3213. and

  3214. precious

  3215. responsibility

  3216. and what

  3217. I want

  3218. you to

  3219. hear

  3220. is

  3221. be

  3222. freed

  3223. to do

  3224. this

  3225. this

  3226. most

  3227. important

  3228. work

  3229. for the

  3230. good

  3231. of our

  3232. people

  3233. and for

  3234. the

  3235. witness

  3236. of the

  3237. gospel

  3238. to the

  3239. glory

  3240. of our

  3241. great

  3242. God

  3243. don't

  3244. get

  3245. distracted

  3246. by the

  3247. minutia

  3248. it's

  3249. not

  3250. the

  3251. most

  3252. important

  3253. thing

  3254. we

  3255. as

  3256. your

  3257. elders

  3258. want

  3259. to

  3260. lead

  3261. you

  3262. by

  3263. equipping

  3264. you

  3265. for

  3266. the

  3267. work

  3268. of

  3269. ministry

  3270. the

  3271. building

  3272. up

  3273. the

  3274. body

  3275. of

  3276. Christ

  3277. and

  3278. we

  3279. want

  3280. to

  3281. free

  3282. you

  3283. to

  3284. do

  3285. that

  3286. and

  3287. to

  3288. do

  3289. it

  3290. well

  3291. to

  3292. the

  3293. glory

  3294. of

  3295. our

  3296. God

  3297. let's

  3298. pray

  3299. together
