  1. Well, good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  2. It's very good to be here with you this morning, opening God's Word together as we continue our verse-by-verse exposition of Paul's letter to the Romans.

  3. Good teachers build cases, laying one truth on top of the next, leading from point to point to aid their hearer's arrival at the truth they intend to present.

  4. Paul, being carried along by the Holy Spirit, is a good teacher.

  5. He has been building the case that we are justified by grace alone through faith alone in the person and finished work of Jesus Christ alone.

  6. In chapter 1, verse 16 and 17, he states his thesis for the entirety of this letter.

  7. There he says,

  8. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  9. For in it, that is the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  10. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  11. The rest of this letter is expounding on what is found in those two verses.

  12. He goes on to explain that whether or not a person has God's standard in writing, they have it written on their hearts.

  13. Which leaves all mankind guilty on the day of God's judgment, for we have all willingly transgressed the standard.

  14. Paul states this most clearly in chapter 3, verse 10 and following as he cites the Old Testament.

  15. None is righteous.

  16. No, not one.

  17. No one understands.

  18. No one seeks for God.

  19. All have turned aside.

  20. Together, they have become worthless.

  21. No one does good.

  22. Not even one.

  23. Their throat is an open grave.

  24. They use their tongues to deceive.

  25. The venom of asps is under their lips.

  26. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.

  27. Their feet are swift to shed blood.

  28. In their paths are ruin and misery.

  29. And the way of peace they have not known.

  30. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  31. Beloved, this includes us.

  32. Having established that all mankind is guilty before God, he then unpacks justification.

  33. Justification is a declaration that one is righteous.

  34. That is, never committed a sin and has perfectly kept all that's required of them.

  35. And he unpacks that this is through faith alone.

  36. Having been justified by faith, Paul teaches us that we continue by faith, having been set free from the enslaving power of sin.

  37. He then roots comfort for our continued struggle with sin in this life in God's sovereign election, calling, justifying, and glorifying work.

  38. We see this in chapter 8.

  39. We find him in chapters 9 through 11 now, working out the implications of God's elective purposes for those who will not be saved.

  40. Particularly, his concern is for the Jewish people.

  41. Clay very helpfully worked us through the majority of chapter 9 over the past three weeks.

  42. Which begins, this is chapter 9 and verse 1.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  43. Paul says,

  44. I am speaking the truth in Christ.

  45. I am not lying.

  46. My conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

  47. This is in response to all he has said about God's elective purpose.

  48. Which is a comfort for those who are in Christ.

  49. But then he turns quickly with this anguish and sorrow.

  50. Verse 3 tells us why.

  51. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen, according to the flesh.

  52. And he's talking there about the Jewish people who had largely rejected the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  53. We see a continuation of this sentiment in today's text.

  54. Which is Romans chapter 9, verse 30, through chapter 10, and verse 4.

    Romans 9:30

  55. And in verse 1, he says this.

  56. This is 1 of chapter 10.

  57. Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

  58. While Paul loves deeply the doctrine of sovereign election, as he should and as we should,

  59. this doctrine does not make him cold to those who will not repent and believe in Christ.

  60. We will see this morning that God's choosing of a people for his praise does not exclude the responsibility of people

  61. to respond in faith to the saving work of the gospel.

  62. And this is where he turns his attention now.

  63. Much of our consideration in the coming weeks will be concerning the nation of Israel.

  64. But let us not merely think this morning that we are speaking of some distant others

  65. and that the warnings here aren't also for us.

  66. So, good teachers build cases.

  67. Good teachers also anticipate and answer objections.

  68. Paul being carried along by the Holy Spirit is a good teacher.

  69. And he anticipates another objection at the end of chapter 9.

  70. Let's read this text together.

  71. Romans 9, verse 30, through 10, verse 4.

    Romans 9:30

  72. We remind you before we do, beloved, that this is God's word to us,

  73. written for his glory and our good.

  74. And so, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  75. Paul writes,

  76. What shall we say then?

  77. That Gentiles who do not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith?

  78. But that Israel, who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness, did not succeed in reaching that law?

  79. Why?

  80. Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works.

  81. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written,

  82. Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.

  83. And whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.

  84. Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

  85. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

  86. For being ignorant of the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own,

  87. they did not submit to God's righteousness.

  88. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

  89. Now, in Romans chapter 9, verses 23 through 26,

    Romans 9:23–26

  90. Paul speaks of God making known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy,

  91. which he has prepared beforehand for glory.

  92. Even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles.

  93. As indeed he says in Hosea,

  94. Those who were not my people I will call my people,

  95. and her who was not beloved I will call beloved.

  96. And in the very place it was said to them,

  97. You are not my people, there they will be called sons of the living God.

  98. God, God, beforehand, in his sovereign election,

  99. has called a people for his praise from every tribe, nation, and tongue.

  100. All peoples, when you see this Jew and Gentile,

  101. he's talking about the whole world.

  102. It is to that declaration that Paul anticipates the objection found

  103. in verse 30 through 32 right at the beginning.

  104. Please know that both the chapter and verse breaks in a text are not inspired.

  105. Sometimes I just disagree with where they put the breaks,

  106. so I take the liberty to break it up myself.

  107. So, see again, what shall we say then?

  108. That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it.

  109. That is a righteousness that is by faith.

  110. So, those who didn't have the law and weren't seeking to obey God in any measure at all,

  111. they have obtained righteousness.

  112. But that Israel, verse 31,

  113. who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness,

  114. did not succeed in reaching that law.

  115. And in the beginning of verse 32,

  116. why?

  117. How is this possible?

  118. That Gentiles who did not pursue,

  119. and Israel who did pursue,

  120. are blessed differently.

  121. This would have been a significant objection in the Jewish mind.

  122. To show you just how deeply fixed the idea

  123. that God only intended his saving work amongst Israelites,

  124. I want to read to you an episode from the life of Christ,

  125. which I think you'll do well to turn to with me,

  126. found in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  127. So, if you could join me there.

  128. Again, how deeply fixed this idea was in the Jewish mind.

  129. God only intended his saving work for them.

  130. That was the idea that was prevalent in the day.

  131. This is Luke 4, beginning in verse 16.

  132. And Jesus came to Nazareth,

  133. where he had been brought up, his hometown.

  134. And as was his custom,

  135. he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day,

  136. and he stood up to read.

  137. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

  138. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

  139. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

  140. because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  141. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

  142. and recovering of sight to the blind,

  143. to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

  144. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  145. And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

  146. And the eyes of all the synagogue were fixed on him.

  147. And he began to say to them,

  148. Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

  149. He's saying,

  150. I'm that one.

  151. And all spoke well of him

  152. and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

  153. And they said,

  154. Is not this Joseph's son?

  155. And he said to them,

  156. anticipating the next things they'll say,

  157. Doubtless you will quote me this proverb,

  158. Physician, heal yourself.

  159. What we have heard you did at Capernaum,

  160. do here in your hometown as well.

  161. They asked him to perform miracles.

  162. And he said,

  163. Truly I say to you,

  164. no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

  165. But in truth I tell you,

  166. there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah,

  167. when the heavens were shut up three years and six months,

  168. and a great famine came over all the land.

  169. And Elijah was sent to none of them,

  170. but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidon,

  171. to a woman who was a widow.

  172. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha,

  173. and none of them was cleansed,

  174. but only Naaman the Syrian.

  175. When they heard these things,

  176. all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

  177. And they rose up and drove him out of the town

  178. and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built,

  179. so that they could throw him down the cliff.

  180. But passing through their midst,

  181. he went away.

  182. Now, what happens between verse 22,

  183. and all who spoke well of him

  184. and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth,

  185. and verse 28,

  186. when they heard these things,

  187. all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

  188. Simply this.

  189. Jesus pointed out two times

  190. that God's mercy passed over Israelites

  191. and was extended to Gentiles.

  192. A Sidonite widow named Zarephath

  193. and a Syrian leper named Naaman.

  194. This is from their own scripture.

  195. The Jews of Jesus and Paul's day

  196. were so conditioned that God's favor had to do

  197. with their lineage and their law-keeping

  198. that they couldn't even entertain the idea

  199. from their own holy text

  200. that God would be gracious outside ethnic boundaries

  201. and they considered Jesus a heretic and worthy of death.

  202. That's how deep-set this type of thinking was.

  203. Paul answers this objection.

  204. You can join me back in Romans.

  205. By pointing out the error of Israel,

  206. I, as Paul does here,

  207. am speaking in generalities.

  208. So praise God that many Jewish people

  209. have and will place saving faith in Jesus Christ.

  210. We're going to explore some of this in chapter 11.

  211. But Paul's concern in this text

  212. and our concern for today

  213. is the broad rejection of justification

  214. by grace alone,

  215. through faith alone,

  216. in the person and completed work

  217. of Jesus Christ alone.

  218. Paul in his day is seeing this broad...

  219. And beloved, we live in a place

  220. that people should know better.

  221. God's word abounds in the place

  222. in which we live.

  223. And yet, there is a broad rejection

  224. of justification by grace alone,

  225. through faith alone,

  226. in Christ alone.

  227. So let's look at Paul's argument

  228. by framing it with the following three points.

  229. Number one, Israel's ignorance

  230. of the purpose of the law.

  231. Number two, Israel's ignorance

  232. of the point of the scripture.

  233. And number three, Israel's ignorance

  234. of the person of God.

  235. So number one, Israel's ignorance

  236. of the purpose of the law.

  237. And we see this in chapter 9

  238. in the rest of verse 32.

  239. He asks the question, why?

  240. Why?

  241. And he says,

  242. because they did not pursue it,

  243. that is the law,

  244. pursue it by faith,

  245. but as if it were based on works.

  246. Notice Paul says that the law,

  247. the righteousness contained within,

  248. believing that somehow

  249. the pursuit of it would be saving.

  250. We live in a glorious day

  251. that we understand how it is

  252. that the law is fulfilled by faith.

  253. They didn't quite understood,

  254. saw things as a shadow,

  255. as a glimpse of what would come,

  256. but it was to be pursued,

  257. nonetheless, by faith.

  258. Paul has established already

  259. that no one has kept God's law perfectly,

  260. and that the righteous requirement

  261. of the law is its perfect keeping.

  262. So what was to be done

  263. with an expectation

  264. that could not be met?

  265. The Jews of his day

  266. seemed to think

  267. that they were meeting

  268. this expectation,

  269. that it was not being met.

  270. Paul asks and answers this question

  271. for us in Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  272. Listen to what he says there,

  273. beginning in verse 21.

  274. He's spoken of grace,

  275. and then he asks,

  276. is the law then contrary

  277. to the promises of God?

  278. Certainly not.

  279. For if a law had been given

  280. that could give life,

  281. then righteousness would indeed

  282. be by the law.

  283. But the Scripture imprisoned

  284. everything under sin

  285. so that the promise by faith

  286. in Jesus Christ

  287. might be given to those who believe.

  288. Now before faith came,

  289. we were held captive under the law,

  290. imprisoned until the coming faith

  291. would be revealed.

  292. So then the law was our guardian

  293. until Christ came

  294. in order that we might be justified

  295. by faith.

  296. The law was, and is,

  297. meant to point us to the one

  298. who kept the law on our behalf.

  299. We're supposed to see our failure in it,

  300. to recognize that we have transgressed it.

  301. Every one of us

  302. has not kept God's law.

  303. And a single transgression of it

  304. deserves the curse of death.

  305. The sinless life of Jesus Christ

  306. is called his active obedience,

  307. and it is a vitally important part

  308. of the offer of the gospel

  309. for our salvation.

  310. He grants to us

  311. his perfect law-keeping

  312. through faith.

  313. Unique in all the world

  314. is the grace and mercy of our God

  315. who makes a requirement

  316. of all who will be saved

  317. and then provides

  318. for all that he commands.

  319. The gospel declares

  320. that we must be perfect

  321. to be saved

  322. and then grants us perfection

  323. through faith in Christ.

  324. This is so incredibly important

  325. to understand.

  326. So important

  327. that I will not grow tired

  328. of saying that one is justified

  329. by grace alone,

  330. through faith alone,

  331. in the person

  332. and completed work

  333. of Jesus Christ alone.

  334. But I will tell you,

  335. even as I say that,

  336. I need to say that.

  337. I need to declare that

  338. to the church.

  339. I will not grow tired

  340. of saying this

  341. because sometimes

  342. I am tempted

  343. to grow tired

  344. of saying it.

  345. We need spines of steel

  346. when it comes to declaring

  347. these great truths.

  348. The law is meant to show us

  349. that we need God's grace

  350. that's given to us

  351. as a gift through faith

  352. and that Christ accomplished

  353. all that we need

  354. that we might be saved.

  355. We're confessional as a church.

  356. We believe that it's important

  357. to draw together

  358. what the Bible teaches

  359. about particular things

  360. that we might put it

  361. in our minds

  362. and live accordingly.

  363. And so we do things

  364. like recite catechisms together.

  365. Some of you may be familiar

  366. with the New City Catechism.

  367. It's one that we do

  368. with our children quite often.

  369. Question and answer 15 says this,

  370. Since no one can keep the law,

  371. what is its purpose?

  372. And then very succinctly stated

  373. that we may know

  374. the holy nature of God

  375. and the sinful nature

  376. of our hearts

  377. and thus our need of a Savior.

  378. The law is meant

  379. to have us looking

  380. for some way

  381. in which the law

  382. will be fulfilled.

  383. Now we live in a Western culture

  384. and Western logic

  385. is very linear.

  386. I'm grateful for the New Testament.

  387. The Greeks were very linear.

  388. This is the heritage

  389. that we receive

  390. in the way that we logic

  391. through things.

  392. But Eastern logic

  393. is very circular

  394. and I don't mean that

  395. as a cut to Eastern logic.

  396. The Old Testament

  397. being written in Hebrew

  398. has a much more

  399. circular logic to it.

  400. That is,

  401. the Old Testament says,

  402. not this,

  403. not this,

  404. not this,

  405. not this,

  406. not this.

  407. And it's leading us to,

  408. well then what?

  409. Well then,

  410. what?

  411. And we're supposed

  412. to arrive

  413. at this realization

  414. that the Messiah

  415. is this one,

  416. Jesus Christ.

  417. And the New Testament

  418. unfolds

  419. all of that

  420. for us.

  421. Israel was

  422. ignorant

  423. ignorant

  424. of the purpose

  425. of the law.

  426. They thought

  427. that by keeping it,

  428. by some measure,

  429. they could gain

  430. God's favor.

  431. All kinds of people

  432. think this way

  433. today.

  434. They want to put

  435. their works

  436. on a scale.

  437. The good

  438. versus the bad

  439. and they hope

  440. that the one

  441. outweighs

  442. the other.

  443. If you ask

  444. the average person

  445. if they'll go to heaven,

  446. they'll say,

  447. well,

  448. I think so

  449. because I think

  450. I'm a good

  451. person.

  452. And the gospel

  453. says,

  454. Romans says,

  455. no,

  456. you're not.

  457. You do not

  458. deserve heaven.

  459. You do not

  460. deserve restored

  461. relationship

  462. with God.

  463. But,

  464. and that's such

  465. an important

  466. conjunction,

  467. God,

  468. because He's

  469. gracious

  470. and He is

  471. merciful,

  472. has made a way

  473. by grace alone

  474. through faith alone

  475. in the person

  476. and completed

  477. work of Jesus

  478. Christ alone.

  479. It could be said

  480. we are saved

  481. by works,

  482. but not our own,

  483. the works

  484. of another,

  485. the work of Christ.

  486. Secondly,

  487. notice Israel's

  488. ignorance

  489. of the point

  490. of the Scripture.

  491. Notice this

  492. in chapter 9,

  493. the very end

  494. of verse 32

  495. and into verse 33.

  496. There Paul says,

  497. they have stumbled

  498. over the stumbling stone.

  499. As it is written,

  500. behold,

  501. I am laying in Zion

  502. a stone of stumbling

  503. and a rock of offense

  504. and whoever believes

  505. in Him

  506. will not

  507. be put to shame.

  508. Now,

  509. what he's explaining

  510. is what he has

  511. just said.

  512. Right?

  513. He's helping us

  514. to understand

  515. this is according

  516. to the Scripture.

  517. Right?

  518. And we see

  519. God's elective purpose

  520. in this.

  521. They've stumbled

  522. over Christ.

  523. Rather than

  524. laying Him

  525. as the foundation

  526. for their hope

  527. of the future,

  528. they have stumbled

  529. over Him.

  530. But,

  531. I say this,

  532. Israel's ignorant

  533. of the point

  534. of Scripture

  535. because the Jewish

  536. people had the Bible

  537. of their day,

  538. the Old Testament,

  539. and would have known

  540. what God had said

  541. to the prophet Isaiah,

  542. which is the citation

  543. found here

  544. in verse 33.

  545. It's a bringing together

  546. of a number of texts

  547. from Isaiah.

  548. Isaiah.

  549. All of the Scripture

  550. is meant to lead us

  551. to Christ.

  552. And you will not

  553. be able to plead

  554. ignorance

  555. on the day of judgment.

  556. We can read

  557. of another episode

  558. in Jesus' life,

  559. this time

  560. after His resurrection

  561. in Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  562. There we see recorded

  563. that very day

  564. two disciples

  565. were going to a village

  566. named Emmaus,

  567. about seven miles

  568. from Jerusalem.

  569. And they were talking

  570. with each other

  571. about all these things

  572. that had happened

  573. while they were talking

  574. and discussing together.

  575. Jesus Himself drew near

  576. and went with Him,

  577. but their eyes were kept

  578. from recognizing Him.

  579. And He said to them,

  580. What is this conversation

  581. that you are holding

  582. with each other

  583. as you walk?

  584. And they stood still

  585. looking sad.

  586. Then one of them,

  587. named Cleopas,

  588. answered Him,

  589. Are you the only visitor

  590. to Jerusalem

  591. who does not know

  592. the things that have

  593. happened there

  594. in these days?

  595. And He said to them,

  596. What things?

  597. And they said to Him,

  598. concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  599. a man who was a prophet,

  600. mighty in deed

  601. and word before God

  602. and all the people,

  603. and how our chief priests

  604. and rulers delivered Him

  605. up to be condemned to death

  606. and crucified Him.

  607. But we had hoped

  608. that He was the one

  609. to redeem Israel.

  610. Yes, and besides all this,

  611. it is now the third day

  612. since these things happened.

  613. Moreover,

  614. some women of our company

  615. amazed us.

  616. They were at the tomb

  617. early in the morning,

  618. and when they did not

  619. find His body,

  620. they came back saying

  621. that they had even seen

  622. a vision of angels

  623. who said that He was alive.

  624. Some of those

  625. who were with us

  626. went to the tomb

  627. and found it just

  628. as the women had said,

  629. but Him they did not see.

  630. And He said to them,

  631. O foolish ones,

  632. and slow of heart

  633. to believe all

  634. that the prophets

  635. have spoken.

  636. Was it not necessary

  637. that the Christ

  638. should suffer these things

  639. and enter into His glory?

  640. And before I read

  641. the last verse

  642. I intend to read

  643. from Luke 24,

  644. I just want to say

  645. between this episode

  646. and the transfiguration,

  647. there's debate in my mind

  648. which I would have

  649. rather been at.

  650. Verse 27 says,

  651. And beginning with Moses

  652. and all the prophets,

  653. He interpreted to them

  654. in all the scriptures

  655. the things concerning Himself.

  656. Notice that they are

  657. weak of heart.

  658. They stood,

  659. they are sad,

  660. they are not so sure

  661. about the resurrection.

  662. He calls them foolish

  663. and slow of heart

  664. to believe

  665. and then He takes them

  666. to the text

  667. and He walks them

  668. through the Old Testament

  669. showing them

  670. that He is in fact

  671. the Christ.

  672. God will hold you accountable

  673. to what can be seen

  674. of Him

  675. and His saving work

  676. through Christ

  677. in this precious text.

  678. You will be accountable

  679. on that day.

  680. He has spoken,

  681. you and I do well

  682. to listen.

  683. May Christ for us

  684. not be a rock

  685. that has stumbled over

  686. but the sure foundation

  687. of our deliverance.

  688. I am grateful

  689. to be part

  690. of a Christian tradition

  691. that takes

  692. the Bible seriously

  693. and to help

  694. pastor a church

  695. that takes

  696. the Bible seriously

  697. but we must know

  698. that a constant

  699. nagging temptation

  700. for those who reverence

  701. God's Word

  702. and see good

  703. in His commands

  704. is to drift off

  705. into legalism.

  706. To begin thinking

  707. once again

  708. that we could ever

  709. have that same purpose.

  710. We can lose sight

  711. that people are saved

  712. by grace alone

  713. through faith alone

  714. in Christ alone.

  715. Jesus condemns

  716. the Pharisees

  717. who were the legalists

  718. of His day

  719. for this very thing.

  720. Listen to the indictment

  721. of John chapter 5

    John 5:39

  722. verse 39 and 40.

  723. There He says,

  724. You search the Scriptures

  725. because you think

  726. that in them

  727. you have eternal life

  728. and it is they

  729. that bear witness

  730. about Me

  731. that you refuse

  732. to come to Me

  733. that you may have life.

  734. You seek to follow

  735. the rules from the text

  736. and yet those rules

  737. are supposed to show you

  738. your need of Me

  739. that you would come

  740. and believe

  741. in the Gospel.

  742. Thirdly,

  743. notice Israel's

  744. ignorance

  745. of the person

  746. of God.

  747. So we jump down

  748. into chapter 10 now

  749. verses 2 through 4.

  750. I bear them witness.

  751. He desires

  752. that they would be saved

  753. because I bear witness

  754. they have a zeal

  755. for God.

  756. They're energetic

  757. toward God

  758. but not

  759. according to knowledge.

  760. The Jewish people

  761. had made a God

  762. of their own invention

  763. and they weren't

  764. coming to Him

  765. on His

  766. terms.

  767. For

  768. being ignorant

  769. of the righteousness

  770. of God

  771. or of

  772. God's righteousness

  773. and seeking

  774. to establish

  775. their own

  776. they did not

  777. submit

  778. to God's righteousness

  779. for Christ

  780. is the end

  781. of the law

  782. for righteousness

  783. to everyone

  784. who believes.

  785. They had failed

  786. to see

  787. that God

  788. is

  789. the standard

  790. that His

  791. righteousness

  792. has been

  793. explained to us

  794. in the law

  795. and therefore

  796. their zeal

  797. was not

  798. according

  799. to knowledge.

  800. Notice

  801. Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  802. I'm thankful

  803. Ernie referenced

  804. this in his

  805. prayer of praise

  806. this morning.

  807. Isaiah

  808. sees a vision

  809. of holy God.

  810. In the year

  811. that King Uzziah

  812. died I saw

  813. the Lord

  814. sitting upon

  815. a throne

  816. high and lifted up

  817. and the train

  818. of His robe

  819. filled the temple.

  820. Above Him

  821. stood the seraphim

  822. each had six

  823. wings which two

  824. He covered His face

  825. and with two

  826. He covered His feet

  827. and with two

  828. He flew.

  829. And one called

  830. to another

  831. and said

  832. holy

  833. holy

  834. holy

  835. holy

  836. that three

  837. time repetition

  838. means perfectly

  839. righteous

  840. righteous

  841. righteous

  842. is the Lord

  843. of hosts

  844. the whole

  845. earth

  846. is full

  847. of His glory

  848. and the foundations

  849. of the threshold

  850. shook at the voice

  851. of Him

  852. who called

  853. and the house

  854. was filled

  855. with smoke.

  856. And here is

  857. Isaiah's response.

  858. This is zeal for God

  859. according to

  860. knowledge.

  861. He says

  862. woe is me

  863. for I am lost

  864. for I am a man

  865. of unclean lips

  866. and I dwell

  867. in the midst

  868. of a people

  869. of unclean lips

  870. for my eyes

  871. have seen

  872. the King

  873. the Lord

  874. of hosts.

  875. What is

  876. wrought in Him

  877. by this vision

  878. of God's holiness

  879. is humility.

  880. Worship

  881. according

  882. to knowledge.

  883. He sees

  884. His need

  885. of cleanliness

  886. to be made

  887. clean.

  888. And if you read

  889. on in Isaiah

  890. He is

  891. and He is sent

  892. He is commissioned

  893. by God

  894. to be a messenger

  895. of the good news

  896. of Christ.

  897. Isaiah

  898. more than any other

  899. prophet speaks

  900. of the coming

  901. Messiah.

  902. So note that response

  903. right?

  904. A zeal for God

  905. begins

  906. with this

  907. humility.

  908. Another place

  909. that we can witness

  910. this

  911. is Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  912. chapter 18

  913. this is

  914. verse 9

  915. and following

  916. Jesus tells

  917. a parable

  918. to some

  919. who trusted

  920. in themselves

  921. that they were

  922. righteous

  923. and treated

  924. others

  925. with contempt.

  926. Two men

  927. went up

  928. into the temple

  929. to pray

  930. one a Pharisee

  931. and the other

  932. a tax collector.

  933. The Pharisee

  934. standing by

  935. himself

  936. prayed

  937. thus.

  938. Look how

  939. contradictory

  940. this is

  941. to the

  942. response

  943. of Isaiah.

  944. God I

  945. thank you

  946. that I

  947. am not

  948. like other

  949. men

  950. extortioners

  951. unjust

  952. adulterers

  953. or even

  954. like this

  955. tax collector.

  956. I fast

  957. twice a week

  958. I give

  959. tithes

  960. of all

  961. that I

  962. get.

  963. But the

  964. tax collector

  965. standing

  966. far off

  967. will not

  968. even lift

  969. up his

  970. eyes to

  971. heaven

  972. but beat

  973. his breast

  974. saying

  975. God

  976. be merciful

  977. to me

  978. a sinner.

  979. And then

  980. Jesus says

  981. I tell you

  982. this man

  983. went down

  984. to his

  985. house

  986. justified

  987. rather than

  988. the other.

  989. For everyone

  990. who exalts

  991. himself

  992. will be

  993. humbled

  994. but the

  995. one who

  996. humbles

  997. himself

  998. will be

  999. exalted.

  1000. In this

  1001. parable

  1002. the tax

  1003. selector

  1004. comes

  1005. by grace

  1006. alone

  1007. through

  1008. faith

  1009. alone

  1010. in

  1011. Christ

  1012. alone.

  1013. The

  1014. Pharisee

  1015. comes

  1016. on his

  1017. own

  1018. merit

  1019. and is

  1020. not

  1021. justified.

  1022. Again

  1023. speaking of

  1024. these

  1025. Pharisees

  1026. and I'm

  1027. driving at

  1028. this because

  1029. I think

  1030. there's

  1031. such a

  1032. danger

  1033. of that

  1034. for us.

  1035. Matthew

    Matthew 23:27

  1036. chapter

  1037. 23

  1038. verse

  1039. 27

  1040. and 28

  1041. Jesus

  1042. says

  1043. woe

  1044. to you

  1045. scribes

  1046. and

  1047. Pharisees

  1048. hypocrites

  1049. for you

  1050. are like

  1051. whitewashed

  1052. tombs

  1053. which

  1054. outwardly

  1055. appear

  1056. beautiful

  1057. but within

  1058. are full

  1059. of dead

  1060. people's

  1061. bones

  1062. and all

  1063. uncluenliness

  1064. so you

  1065. also

  1066. outwardly

  1067. appear

  1068. righteous

  1069. to others

  1070. but within

  1071. you are

  1072. full

  1073. of hypocrisy

  1074. and lawlessness

  1075. so if we

  1076. are to go

  1077. to God

  1078. if we

  1079. have a

  1080. zeal

  1081. for God

  1082. which I

  1083. commend

  1084. it must

  1085. be

  1086. according

  1087. to knowledge

  1088. we must

  1089. come to

  1090. him

  1091. on his

  1092. terms

  1093. we must

  1094. recognize

  1095. that we

  1096. have

  1097. nothing

  1098. to offer

  1099. to our

  1100. salvation

  1101. but humility

  1102. of heart

  1103. and the

  1104. faith

  1105. that he

  1106. gifts

  1107. so an

  1108. application

  1109. for closing

  1110. if you

  1111. have yet

  1112. to place

  1113. saving

  1114. faith

  1115. in Jesus

  1116. Christ

  1117. maybe this

  1118. morning you

  1119. find yourself

  1120. trusting in

  1121. your own

  1122. works

  1123. it resonated

  1124. with you

  1125. when I said

  1126. people put

  1127. things on a

  1128. scale and

  1129. hope that

  1130. they have

  1131. been good

  1132. enough

  1133. this text

  1134. teaches that

  1135. if you will

  1136. cease laboring

  1137. to justify

  1138. yourself

  1139. and rather

  1140. place all

  1141. of your

  1142. hope in

  1143. the personal

  1144. work of

  1145. Jesus Christ

  1146. then you

  1147. will be

  1148. saved from

  1149. the eternal

  1150. consequence

  1151. of your

  1152. sin

  1153. you will

  1154. not be

  1155. put to

  1156. shame

  1157. if you

  1158. trust

  1159. in Christ

  1160. if you

  1161. have placed

  1162. saving

  1163. faith in

  1164. Jesus Christ

  1165. church

  1166. this text

  1167. teaches both

  1168. the sovereignty

  1169. of God

  1170. and salvation

  1171. and the

  1172. human

  1173. responsibility

  1174. to believe

  1175. the gospel

  1176. both things

  1177. are being

  1178. taught right

  1179. here in

  1180. this text

  1181. the sovereignty

  1182. of God

  1183. and salvation

  1184. his eternal

  1185. purpose of

  1186. election

  1187. and the

  1188. human

  1189. responsibility

  1190. to believe

  1191. the gospel

  1192. both truths

  1193. are to be

  1194. believed

  1195. they are

  1196. important for

  1197. us

  1198. otherwise

  1199. they would

  1200. not be

  1201. taught

  1202. Charles

  1203. Spurgeon

  1204. once said

  1205. this is on

  1206. the back

  1207. of your

  1208. bulletin

  1209. it's the

  1210. same historic

  1211. quotation

  1212. found there

  1213. last week

  1214. but Clay

  1215. didn't reference

  1216. it

  1217. and so

  1218. it's just

  1219. too good

  1220. not to

  1221. read it

  1222. so I

  1223. left it

  1224. in place

  1225. he said

  1226. this

  1227. two truths

  1228. cannot be

  1229. contradictory

  1230. to each

  1231. other

  1232. two truths

  1233. cannot be

  1234. contradictory

  1235. to each

  1236. other

  1237. if then

  1238. I find

  1239. taught

  1240. in one

  1241. place

  1242. that

  1243. everything

  1244. is

  1245. foreordained

  1246. that is

  1247. true

  1248. and if

  1249. I find

  1250. in another

  1251. place

  1252. that man

  1253. is responsible

  1254. for all

  1255. his actions

  1256. that

  1257. is true

  1258. both

  1259. things are

  1260. taught in

  1261. scripture

  1262. and it

  1263. is my

  1264. folly

  1265. that leads

  1266. me to

  1267. imagine

  1268. that two

  1269. truths

  1270. can ever

  1271. contradict

  1272. each other

  1273. we sometimes

  1274. feel that

  1275. right

  1276. it feels

  1277. contradictory

  1278. to me

  1279. but that's

  1280. my

  1281. that's my

  1282. folly

  1283. not the

  1284. truth

  1285. proclaimed

  1286. so both

  1287. truths are

  1288. to be

  1289. believed

  1290. and finally

  1291. this text

  1292. teaches

  1293. that there

  1294. is a

  1295. way

  1296. to be

  1297. saved

  1298. praise

  1299. god

  1300. we don't

  1301. have to

  1302. stay

  1303. in our

  1304. sin

  1305. there's a

  1306. way to

  1307. be saved

  1308. by grace

  1309. alone

  1310. through faith

  1311. alone

  1312. in the

  1313. person

  1314. and completed

  1315. work of

  1316. Jesus

  1317. Christ

  1318. alone

  1319. so we

  1320. must

  1321. maintain

  1322. this

  1323. truth

  1324. and we

  1325. must

  1326. proclaim

  1327. it

  1328. boldly

  1329. I told

  1330. you at

  1331. the outset

  1332. of our

  1333. study of

  1334. Romans

  1335. that

  1336. a

  1337. reason

  1338. we

  1339. determined

  1340. to

  1341. study

  1342. this

  1343. text

  1344. is to

  1345. remind

  1346. us

  1347. of

  1348. the

  1349. hill

  1350. that

  1351. we

  1352. are

  1353. meant

  1354. to

  1355. die

  1356. upon

  1357. there

  1358. seems

  1359. to be

  1360. so

  1361. many

  1362. lesser

  1363. truths

  1364. being

  1365. challenged

  1366. and

  1367. debated

  1368. as

  1369. distractions

  1370. from the

  1371. gospel

  1372. of

  1373. Jesus

  1374. Christ

  1375. may we

  1376. not get

  1377. confused

  1378. between

  1379. the

  1380. gospel

  1381. and

  1382. gospel

  1383. implications

  1384. we

  1385. need

  1386. to

  1387. stand

  1388. shoulder

  1389. to

  1390. shoulder

  1391. arm

  1392. in

  1393. arm

  1394. on the

  1395. hill

  1396. of

  1397. justification

  1398. by grace

  1399. alone

  1400. through faith

  1401. alone

  1402. in the

  1403. person

  1404. and

  1405. completed

  1406. work

  1407. of

  1408. Jesus

  1409. Christ

  1410. alone

  1411. let's

  1412. pray

  1413. together

  1414. as
