  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. We had, the original plan was to continue our verse-by-verse exposition in the book of Romans,

  3. ! but Nathan has a really bad pneumonia and tapped out.

  4. ! And to kind of add to that, I have been kind of groggy and struggling this morning, too.

  5. So when I saw the text, I was like, uh, you know, like, I don't have, I basically have one hour

  6. going into this today, so let's just see how it goes.

  7. Um, but I remember going up in Norcross, and Norcross First Baptist, and a guy came and spoke,

  8. and he just said, um, I can't wait for you to hear the sermon this morning,

  9. and I hardly can't wait to hear it myself, and that's kind of how I feel at the moment.

  10. But I'm trying to, I thought, if I had another week to kind of continue Romans 9,

  11. what would I have talked about?

  12. And I think I would have talked about this, but in short, it's answering the question that

  13. if God has a people out there, if he has a people that he has, um, predestined, called,

  14. and elected into salvation.

  15. And a long time ago, when I was introduced to this, as someone who has a passion for the

  16. law, a passion for evangelism, my, the question was, then why evangelize?

  17. If God has the people out there, then why do we go out and share the gospel?

  18. Why do people go abroad to reach the nations?

  19. Why not just back off?

  20. And so I began just searching the scriptures, and I was able to find so many reasons there,

  21. and that's what I would actually like to share with you today.

  22. And, but my, my, my zeal, my passion for missions and evangelism goes back to probably when I was

  23. saved around 18, 19, probably, early, early college time.

  24. And just, I, I just started hunting my friends down to kind of share the gospel.

  25. And, uh, the Lord saved one of my best friends named Dustin, and he had just a crazy life before

  26. we knew the Lord.

  27. And we just started just hunting people down to share Jesus with.

  28. Um, we actually started going through the yearbook to, like, say, oh yeah, he hadn't heard yet.

  29. Oh yeah, we need to go find this guy.

  30. And kind of a bull in a china closet in a lot of ways.

  31. We meant well, but didn't really know what we were doing.

  32. And, uh, I, I, uh, so that, but my focus during that time was, this is on my shoulders,

  33. and I have to do this.

  34. And it's up to me to convince unbelievers that they're in error, that they need to know Christ.

  35. And, and if they fail to come to Christ, it might be my fault.

  36. Uh, if I, if I don't have enough arguments, if I don't have enough persuasion.

  37. And so there's a lot that the doctrines of grace did for me when it came to understanding how it applies to evangelism.

  38. But, simply put, I'm going to just define evangelism for you.

  39. Define it.

  40. And, I think this is a biblical definition.

  41. It says, evangelism is teaching the gospel with the aim to persuade.

  42. Alright?

  43. Evangelism is a teaching, a proclaiming and explaining of the gospel message from God

  44. that leads to salvation with the aim or the hope to persuade, to convince, to convert.

  45. And, we're going to be in the book of Acts today.

  46. So, go ahead and open up to Acts 17.

  47. Acts 17, and then we're also just going to get, uh,

  48. our main text today will be in Acts 18.

  49. But, just to show you where this definition can kind of come from.

  50. Acts 17, if you go to verse 2,

  51. I believe, yeah.

  52. Acts 17, Paul, uh, is doing what he normally does,

  53. and he's going around, he goes to synagogues,

  54. he goes to the Jews first, typically,

  55. and then to the Gentiles following his mission.

  56. Sorry, this is what happens when you have an hour of preparation.

  57. You're, like, second-guessing yourself.

  58. Hold on one second.

  59. Alright, we're good.

  60. Acts 17, verse 2.

    Acts 17:2

  61. It says,

  62. And Paul went in, and as was his custom,

  63. and on three Sabbath days,

  64. he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

  65. explaining and proving that it was necessary

  66. for Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead,

  67. and saying,

  68. This Jesus, who I proclaim to you,

  69. is the Christ.

  70. And some of them were persuaded,

  71. see that,

  72. and joined Paul and Silas,

  73. as did a great many of devout Greeks,

  74. and not a few of the leading women.

  75. So, you see this idea that it is

  76. explaining the Gospel.

  77. It is reasoning with people from the Word of God

  78. that Jesus, in fact, is the Savior,

  79. with the goal,

  80. the aim,

  81. to persuade,

  82. to convince.

  83. So,

  84. it's impossible to coerce somebody

  85. into being a Christian.

  86. It's impossible to trick somebody

  87. into being a Christian.

  88. They only can be persuaded

  89. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  90. So, that's where we get our definition from.

  91. But, in our context today,

  92. I want you to jump down to chapter 18.

  93. And this is when Paul is in Corinth.

  94. And,

  95. we see a lot here about,

  96. I would say,

  97. why we evangelize.

  98. And I think I grew up,

  99. I would say that some of my reasons

  100. for evangelizing,

  101. like,

  102. weren't always the best.

  103. And especially when you apply

  104. God's sovereignty

  105. in the role of evangelism.

  106. And,

  107. this is one of those texts,

  108. I think,

  109. contains

  110. at least four different motivations

  111. or drives for evangelism.

  112. If we believe in God's sovereignty.

  113. So,

  114. I'm going to break it up for you.

  115. We're going to just do a quick run through

  116. of the story.

  117. Stop and explain a little bit.

  118. And then we're going to go to the end.

  119. And,

  120. kind of give some application

  121. for why we ought

  122. to share the gospel

  123. if we have those convictions

  124. that God is sovereign over salvation.

  125. Alright?

  126. So,

  127. number one,

  128. scene one,

  129. is Paul's arrival

  130. and initial mission.

  131. Alright?

  132. Scene one is Paul's arrival

  133. and initial mission.

  134. We see this in chapter 18.

  135. We'll go one through four.

  136. It says,

  137. After this,

  138. Paul left Athens

  139. and went to Corinth.

  140. He found a Jew

  141. named Aquila,

  142. a native of Pontus,

  143. recently come from Italy

  144. with his wife Priscilla,

  145. because Claudius

  146. had commanded

  147. all the Jews

  148. to leave Rome.

  149. And he went to see them,

  150. and because he was

  151. one of the same trade,

  152. he stayed with them

  153. and worked,

  154. for they were tent makers

  155. by trade.

  156. And he reasoned

  157. in the synagogue

  158. every Sabbath

  159. and tried to persuade

  160. Jews and Greeks.

  161. So you see that

  162. repetition of him

  163. going to

  164. a new place,

  165. a new city,

  166. and he would go

  167. to the synagogue first

  168. because those were the Jews

  169. who,

  170. they at least had some context

  171. for what he was going

  172. to talk about.

  173. The scriptures,

  174. the Messiah,

  175. so he always started there

  176. and he sought to persuade them.

  177. Now,

  178. Corinth,

  179. if you know your geography,

  180. is a little south of Athens,

  181. about 46 miles south of Athens.

  182. And it was,

  183. again,

  184. sort of a Roman colony.

  185. But,

  186. you know,

  187. I'll spare you all

  188. the long history lesson,

  189. but it was a big trade center,

  190. merchant center,

  191. and some of you are aware

  192. that there was a huge temple there,

  193. the Temple of Aphrodite.

  194. So,

  195. sexual immorality

  196. was rampant

  197. and

  198. Corinth.

  199. And it was kind of known

  200. as like the sin city

  201. in one way

  202. of the Roman Empire.

  203. It was a very dark,

  204. tempting

  205. place to be

  206. where all kind of sin

  207. was just celebrated

  208. out in the open

  209. with no shame

  210. at all.

  211. So,

  212. there was sin

  213. definitely in every Roman colony

  214. as we would be aware of,

  215. but like,

  216. even the Romans

  217. had this sense of

  218. Corinth

  219. is really bad.

  220. and so it was

  221. a very hot

  222. place to be.

  223. But,

  224. a critical point

  225. where the gospel,

  226. if Paul was able

  227. to plant a church there,

  228. could go all over the empire

  229. with the sailing,

  230. the merchants,

  231. and all the different

  232. commerce that came through.

  233. So,

  234. yeah,

  235. but he says he met

  236. Aquila

  237. and Priscilla.

  238. There's actually

  239. an extra-biblical

  240. Roman source

  241. that actually says

  242. that,

  243. yeah,

  244. Claudius

  245. did expel

  246. all the Jews

  247. from Rome.

  248. So,

  249. that goes along

  250. what we see here.

  251. And we see that

  252. in addition to

  253. support raising,

  254. Paul occasionally

  255. stops in a place

  256. and works,

  257. and he was a tent maker.

  258. We kind of can forget

  259. that about Paul.

  260. We just think that

  261. people just send him

  262. all this money

  263. all the time.

  264. But there were times

  265. that he stayed

  266. where he was

  267. for a long time

  268. and made money

  269. on his own

  270. to support himself.

  271. So,

  272. that's

  273. scene one.

  274. Paul's arrival

  275. and initial mission.

  276. Alright?

  277. This is scene two.

  278. Number two.

  279. The arrival of Silas

  280. and Timothy

  281. and then Jewish

  282. opposition.

  283. We'll see this

  284. in five and six.

  285. When Silas

  286. and Timothy

  287. arrived from Macedonia,

  288. Paul was occupied

  289. with the word,

  290. testifying to the Jews

  291. that the Christ

  292. was Jesus.

  293. and when they

  294. opposed

  295. and reviled him,

  296. he shook off

  297. his garments

  298. and said to them,

  299. your blood

  300. be on your own heads.

  301. I am innocent.

  302. From now on,

  303. I will go

  304. to the Gentiles.

  305. Alright,

  306. so let's stop there.

  307. a lot of people

  308. have this wrong idea

  309. of Paul

  310. that he was just

  311. like the lone

  312. ranger Christian.

  313. He was always

  314. just out there

  315. on his own

  316. doing his thing.

  317. And I've seen

  318. other missionaries

  319. try to model that.

  320. Well,

  321. Paul was by himself.

  322. I'm like,

  323. yeah,

  324. but you're not

  325. Paul number one.

  326. Number two,

  327. Paul had the church

  328. wherever he went.

  329. And he had other

  330. believers that tried

  331. to go and support him.

  332. So unless he was

  333. like providentially

  334. isolated by God,

  335. he had other people

  336. with him.

  337. So that's important

  338. to remember.

  339. And so you had

  340. Priscilla and Aquila.

  341. They came from Rome

  342. and they came together

  343. to encourage one another.

  344. And then you see

  345. he continued

  346. just going to

  347. the synagogue,

  348. reasoning with them,

  349. trying to testify

  350. that the Christ

  351. was Jesus.

  352. And at some point

  353. they said,

  354. no,

  355. we're done.

  356. They reviled him.

  357. They attacked him.

  358. Tried to tear him down.

  359. All right?

  360. So just imagine this.

  361. Paul had a very weak

  362. physical presence.

  363. I don't know if y'all

  364. are aware of that.

  365. If you read 1 Corinthians,

  366. you'll just kind of see.

  367. He wasn't this big,

  368. strong,

  369. handsome-looking guy

  370. who could deliver

  371. a great speech.

  372. He was not probably

  373. very attractive

  374. to the eyes.

  375. He wasn't the most eloquent.

  376. He says that.

  377. So he was in there

  378. trying to persuade them.

  379. And they basically said,

  380. you know,

  381. get out of here.

  382. And he responds

  383. very strongly.

  384. And he says,

  385. look at that,

  386. verse 6,

  387. your blood be on

  388. your own heads.

  389. I am innocent.

  390. From now on,

  391. I will go to the Gentiles.

  392. Okay?

  393. So,

  394. excuse me,

  395. we have this idea,

  396. right,

  397. that if God is

  398. sovereign in salvation,

  399. that that kind of

  400. frees man of his

  401. responsibility to go

  402. and to share the gospel.

  403. Very clearly,

  404. right here,

  405. this is the same man

  406. who wrote Romans 9,

  407. by the way.

  408. He understands

  409. that there's some weight

  410. and responsibility

  411. on him

  412. to go and be that

  413. instrument to share

  414. the gospel.

  415. And he kind of

  416. gives us

  417. a recollection

  418. of a prophet,

  419. Ezekiel.

  420. If you want to,

  421. I'll save us some time,

  422. but write this down.

  423. Ezekiel 33,

  424. 1 through 9.

  425. And this is

  426. the picture

  427. of the watchman

  428. on the wall.

  429. Okay?

  430. And,

  431. so back in ancient times,

  432. cities were fortified.

  433. They always were

  434. under threat of attack.

  435. And there would be

  436. guards or watchmen

  437. posted on the walls

  438. day and night.

  439. And,

  440. if they saw an enemy

  441. coming,

  442. they saw danger coming,

  443. it was their responsibility

  444. to blow the trumpet

  445. and to warn people,

  446. warn the city,

  447. that enemies

  448. were approaching.

  449. Alright?

  450. And if he blew the trumpet

  451. and they ignored him,

  452. then,

  453. he says in Ezekiel,

  454. that their blood

  455. will be on their own heads.

  456. Right?

  457. And,

  458. but if the watchman

  459. fell asleep

  460. or was derelict

  461. in his duty

  462. and the enemy came,

  463. then their blood,

  464. the city's blood,

  465. will be on the watchman's head.

  466. So,

  467. pretty,

  468. pretty serious stuff.

  469. Right?

  470. And,

  471. so what we see

  472. in Ezekiel

  473. was God was telling him,

  474. impending judgment

  475. is coming.

  476. I want you to warn

  477. the people

  478. that judgment

  479. is coming.

  480. You are a watchman

  481. on the wall

  482. and if you fail

  483. to do this,

  484. then their blood

  485. will be on your head.

  486. And,

  487. and if they fail

  488. to listen to you

  489. and repent,

  490. then the blood

  491. will be on their head.

  492. So,

  493. we see

  494. that imagery here

  495. of Paul

  496. going in

  497. and he's pleading

  498. with them.

  499. He's reasoning

  500. with them.

  501. You know what?

  502. And then he gets

  503. to that point

  504. and he goes,

  505. you know what?

  506. Blood be on

  507. your own head.

  508. I am free

  509. of my weightiness

  510. to that.

  511. Very,

  512. very much so.

  513. Responsibility

  514. of us to go

  515. and share

  516. is clearly seen here.

  517. Right?

  518. So we get to

  519. first,

  520. or excuse me,

  521. I just threw this

  522. together in an hour.

  523. This isn't something

  524. I've had together

  525. before.

  526. or so.

  527. Scene three.

  528. Number three.

  529. We see

  530. conversion

  531. and empowerment.

  532. Alright?

  533. Conversion

  534. and empowerment.

  535. Verse seven.

  536. He left there

  537. and went to the house

  538. of a man named

  539. Titius Justice,

  540. a worshiper of God.

  541. His house

  542. was next door

  543. to the synagogue.

  544. Crispus,

  545. the ruler

  546. of the synagogue,

  547. believed in the Lord.

  548. together with all,

  549. with his entire

  550. household.

  551. And many of the

  552. Corinthians

  553. hearing Paul

  554. believed and were

  555. baptized.

  556. And the Lord

  557. said to Paul

  558. one night

  559. in a vision,

  560. Do not be afraid,

  561. but go on speaking

  562. and do not be silent,

  563. for I am with you

  564. and you are my people.

  565. And he stayed

  566. a year and six months

  567. teaching the word

  568. of God.

  569. Failed to do this

  570. with the title

  571. of today's message

  572. is

  573. there are many

  574. in this city

  575. who are my people.

  576. That's the message here.

  577. And

  578. so what we're going

  579. to take from this

  580. that said was

  581. there was conversion

  582. and empowerment.

  583. So as soon as

  584. Paul is rejected

  585. from the synagogue,

  586. like we,

  587. you know,

  588. leave,

  589. he says,

  590. alright,

  591. blood be on your own heads.

  592. He goes to the next,

  593. the house,

  594. the next door.

  595. And

  596. what's amazing

  597. is

  598. he converts

  599. namely the pastor

  600. of that synagogue

  601. converts to leader

  602. of that synagogue.

  603. And

  604. just the irony

  605. of that.

  606. And so

  607. so

  608. then

  609. the guy's household

  610. is baptized

  611. and other

  612. Corinthians

  613. as well.

  614. You just have to

  615. put yourself

  616. in the place

  617. of Paul.

  618. This has been

  619. a hard place

  620. so far,

  621. but in a vision

  622. one night

  623. God came to him

  624. and he encouraged

  625. him to stay there.

  626. Alright,

  627. don't leave,

  628. stay there.

  629. I have purpose

  630. for you being there.

  631. This is not

  632. by accident.

  633. Remain in Corinth.

  634. Alright,

  635. so

  636. so if you think

  637. about it now,

  638. that synagogue

  639. is without a leader.

  640. So they have to

  641. find another leader

  642. because that leader

  643. just became

  644. a follower

  645. of Christ.

  646. So that leads us

  647. to seem

  648. four.

  649. This is

  650. persecution,

  651. compassion,

  652. and conversion.

  653. Alright?

  654. Verse 12,

  655. but when Galio,

  656. who is proconsul

  657. of Achaia,

  658. the Jews

  659. made a united

  660. attack on Paul

  661. and brought him

  662. before the tribunal,

  663. so this is like

  664. the Gentile

  665. Roman rulers,

  666. saying,

  667. this man

  668. is persuading

  669. people to worship

  670. God contrary

  671. to our law.

  672. But when Paul

  673. was about to

  674. open his mouth,

  675. Galio said

  676. to the Jews,

  677. if it were

  678. a matter of

  679. wrongdoing

  680. or vicious crime,

  681. O Jews,

  682. I have a reason

  683. to accept

  684. your complaint.

  685. But since

  686. it is a matter

  687. of questions

  688. about words

  689. and names

  690. and your own law,

  691. see to it yourselves.

  692. I refuse to be

  693. a judge of these things.

  694. And he drove

  695. them from the tribunal.

  696. And they seized

  697. Sosthenes,

  698. the ruler

  699. of the synagogue

  700. and beat him

  701. in front of the tribunal.

  702. But Galio

  703. paid no attention

  704. to any of this.

  705. Alright?

  706. So,

  707. to paraphrase

  708. this story,

  709. so,

  710. if you want

  711. to think about it,

  712. like,

  713. the new pastor,

  714. the interim pastor

  715. of this synagogue,

  716. got all the Jews

  717. riled up

  718. and said,

  719. let's go get them.

  720. Let's go get them

  721. punished.

  722. This kind of

  723. worked for Jesus.

  724. Let's see if this

  725. will work for Paul.

  726. And so,

  727. they dragged Paul

  728. to Galio,

  729. who was the Roman

  730. leader that was there,

  731. the proconsul.

  732. And they said,

  733. hey,

  734. he's stirring up

  735. a bunch of trouble.

  736. He's causing people

  737. to worship God

  738. that's contrary

  739. to our laws.

  740. And this was actually

  741. pretty common.

  742. Like,

  743. Pilate actually did

  744. the same thing.

  745. He was like,

  746. this is just stuff

  747. that has to do

  748. with your own religion.

  749. As long as he's not

  750. breaking our law,

  751. we don't really care.

  752. Just like what

  753. a lot of their

  754. response was

  755. for a long time

  756. from the Gentile

  757. rulers.

  758. So they were like,

  759. just quit causing

  760. a fuss.

  761. And Paul was actually

  762. about to make his

  763. defense,

  764. and that proconsul

  765. cut him off

  766. and said,

  767. this is ridiculous.

  768. Like,

  769. just get out of here.

  770. Like,

  771. I'm throwing out

  772. the charges.

  773. You know,

  774. please leave.

  775. Get out.

  776. And drove them

  777. out from the

  778. tribunal.

  779. Right?

  780. So Paul's just

  781. sort of like,

  782. so imagine Paul

  783. being outside this

  784. place.

  785. Alright?

  786. So he's been

  787. acquitted,

  788. in essence.

  789. And he looks over

  790. and he sees

  791. the new pastor

  792. of this synagogue.

  793. I'm just paraphrasing.

  794. The new leader

  795. of the synagogue.

  796. They turn on him

  797. and they beat him.

  798. That's pretty wild,

  799. right?

  800. So,

  801. don't ever do that

  802. to a new pastor

  803. in your church.

  804. Unless he's

  805. preaching heresy.

  806. So then,

  807. I want you to think

  808. about Paul.

  809. Like,

  810. put yourself

  811. in Paul's

  812. mind.

  813. What would you

  814. be thinking

  815. at that moment?

  816. Like,

  817. serves you right.

  818. Mess with God's

  819. messenger,

  820. that's what happens.

  821. You could be

  822. vengeful about it.

  823. You could be

  824. spiteful.

  825. Like,

  826. yeah,

  827. you led an attack

  828. on me and boy

  829. did that backfire.

  830. Now instead of me

  831. getting beaten,

  832. you're getting

  833. beaten.

  834. You could have

  835. that approach.

  836. I think my

  837. sinful flesh,

  838. if any of you

  839. know me,

  840. would probably be

  841. tempted to feel

  842. that way

  843. sometimes.

  844. But,

  845. what happens?

  846. It doesn't

  847. really say

  848. right here in

  849. Acts,

  850. but,

  851. what I like

  852. to think

  853. was that

  854. Paul saw

  855. this man

  856. and

  857. was broken

  858. for him,

  859. was broken

  860. for Sosthenes,

  861. was moved

  862. by compassion

  863. to go and

  864. help him

  865. after being,

  866. you know,

  867. beaten and rejected

  868. by his own

  869. people.

  870. That Paul said,

  871. hey,

  872. you know,

  873. come with me

  874. and began

  875. sharing the

  876. gospel with

  877. him.

  878. I can take

  879. a wild guess

  880. at that

  881. because if you

  882. look at,

  883. turn over to

  884. 1 Corinthians

  885. really quickly.

  886. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  887. chapter 1.

  888. So Paul is

  889. in Corinth

  890. in which

  891. eventually a

  892. church is

  893. planted.

  894. If you look

  895. at 1 Corinthians,

  896. the first

  897. letter he

  898. wrote to

  899. that church,

  900. look at

  901. verse 1.

  902. It says,

  903. Paul,

  904. called by

  905. the will

  906. of God

  907. to be an

  908. apostle of

  909. Christ Jesus

  910. and our

  911. brother

  912. Sosthenes.

  913. Pretty

  914. cool.

  915. Pretty sure

  916. this is the

  917. same guy,

  918. but that's

  919. why I think

  920. like Paul

  921. has moved

  922. to not

  923. mock this

  924. guy,

  925. but to

  926. show him

  927. compassion

  928. and to

  929. share the

  930. gospel with

  931. him.

  932. And eventually

  933. he went

  934. from being

  935. a leader

  936. in the

  937. synagogue

  938. to being

  939. a leader

  940. in the

  941. church,

  942. which is

  943. why he

  944. was

  945. addressed

  946. right at

  947. the beginning

  948. of 1 Corinthians.

  949. So you

  950. can flip

  951. back over.

  952. Alright,

  953. so there's

  954. a lot in

  955. all this

  956. stuff,

  957. but from

  958. this text,

  959. I'm going

  960. to try to

  961. give you

  962. four reasons

  963. that drive

  964. me personally

  965. to share

  966. the gospel

  967. as someone

  968. who believes

  969. in God's

  970. election,

  971. God's

  972. choosing,

  973. God's

  974. sovereignty

  975. over salvation.

  976. And

  977. some of

  978. you,

  979. you know,

  980. we love

  981. reading good

  982. books,

  983. we love

  984. listening to

  985. good sermons,

  986. most people

  987. in this

  988. church.

  989. But isn't

  990. it special

  991. when you

  992. just sit

  993. down and

  994. dive into

  995. the word

  996. on a

  997. particular

  998. thing and

  999. you see

  1000. so many

  1001. things on

  1002. your own

  1003. without any

  1004. kind of

  1005. aid or

  1006. help?

  1007. This was

  1008. this for

  1009. me many

  1010. years ago.

  1011. I began

  1012. just putting

  1013. this together.

  1014. So why

  1015. evangelize?

  1016. Reason number

  1017. one,

  1018. alright,

  1019. is seen

  1020. in verses

  1021. 5 and

  1022. 6.

  1023. This idea

  1024. of rescuing

  1025. them.

  1026. If we

  1027. remember Romans

    Romans 9:1–5

  1028. 9 verses

  1029. 1 through

  1030. 5 where

  1031. Paul said

  1032. that he

  1033. wishes that

  1034. he was

  1035. accursed,

  1036. his fellow

  1037. Jews could

  1038. be saved.

  1039. But if

  1040. we are

  1041. truly converted,

  1042. if we truly

  1043. have the

  1044. Holy Spirit

  1045. in us,

  1046. that comes

  1047. with new

  1048. affections and

  1049. new desires

  1050. for God that

  1051. we did not

  1052. have before.

  1053. And one of

  1054. those is,

  1055. we can't just

  1056. look around at

  1057. the broken and

  1058. lost world

  1059. around us and

  1060. unbelievers and

  1061. just say,

  1062. eh, no big

  1063. deal.

  1064. It weighs

  1065. on us

  1066. that we

  1067. see their

  1068. brokenness and

  1069. their pain and

  1070. their suffering

  1071. around us with

  1072. a life without

  1073. God.

  1074. And God's

  1075. people should

  1076. desire to go

  1077. and rescue

  1078. them.

  1079. Alright?

  1080. The Scripture

  1081. says in Proverbs

    Proverbs 24:11

  1082. 24 verse 11,

  1083. rescue those

  1084. who are being

  1085. taken away to

  1086. death.

  1087. Hold back

  1088. those who

  1089. are stumbling

  1090. towards

  1091. slaughter.

  1092. Jude 1,

  1093. 22 and

  1094. 23,

  1095. have mercy

  1096. on those

  1097. who doubt

  1098. and save

  1099. others by

  1100. snatching them

  1101. from the

  1102. fire.

  1103. That's

  1104. command,

  1105. right?

  1106. And some

  1107. of you may

  1108. feel this for

  1109. lost loved

  1110. ones,

  1111. may feel this

  1112. for lost

  1113. friends,

  1114. and all

  1115. that's in

  1116. you is just

  1117. pleading with

  1118. them,

  1119. right?

  1120. To come and

  1121. be reconciled

  1122. to God.

  1123. But if we

  1124. have no desire

  1125. for others to

  1126. be saved,

  1127. that tells us

  1128. something about

  1129. the gospel

  1130. that we claim

  1131. to believe.

  1132. It exposes

  1133. our conviction,

  1134. alright?

  1135. What we

  1136. actually believe.

  1137. We can't be

  1138. quiet about it.

  1139. So that's

  1140. just one reason.

  1141. This is a

  1142. big one.

  1143. Point number

  1144. two,

  1145. why evangelize.

  1146. It's a means

  1147. to the greatest

  1148. ends.

  1149. Okay?

  1150. It's a means

  1151. to the greatest

  1152. ends.

  1153. Submissions

  1154. and evangelism

  1155. are commanded

  1156. by God

  1157. because He's

  1158. chosen the

  1159. preaching of

  1160. the gospel

  1161. to be the

  1162. means to

  1163. bring salvation

  1164. to His

  1165. people scattered

  1166. abroad.

  1167. This is His

  1168. design.

  1169. Alright?

  1170. And

  1171. where I'm

  1172. going with

  1173. this is

  1174. that

  1175. God's

  1176. election

  1177. ensures that

  1178. our efforts

  1179. and missions

  1180. and evangelism

  1181. are not just

  1182. left to chance

  1183. to coincidence

  1184. that Christ's

  1185. blood was not

  1186. spilt needlessly.

  1187. It emboldens

  1188. Christians knowing

  1189. that God has

  1190. a people

  1191. out there

  1192. that He is

  1193. going to use

  1194. that messenger,

  1195. that evangelist,

  1196. whoever it is,

  1197. to reach them

  1198. to bring them

  1199. in.

  1200. Alright?

  1201. Now we see

  1202. this in our

  1203. text in

  1204. verses 9-11.

  1205. Look at it

  1206. again.

  1207. That vision

  1208. that Paul had.

  1209. Do not be

  1210. afraid,

  1211. God said,

  1212. but go on

  1213. speaking.

  1214. Do not be

  1215. silent,

  1216. for I am

  1217. with you

  1218. and no one

  1219. will attack

  1220. you to harm

  1221. you.

  1222. For I have

  1223. many in

  1224. this city

  1225. who are

  1226. my people.

  1227. And He

  1228. stayed a year

  1229. and six months

  1230. teaching the

  1231. word of God

  1232. among them.

  1233. Alright,

  1234. big question.

  1235. Is there

  1236. a church

  1237. in Corinth

  1238. already?

  1239. Are we

  1240. aware of

  1241. a church

  1242. in Corinth?

  1243. Nope.

  1244. Paul just

  1245. arrived.

  1246. He just

  1247. got there.

  1248. There is

  1249. no church.

  1250. There is

  1251. no established

  1252. church,

  1253. no Christians.

  1254. So why

  1255. would God

  1256. say,

  1257. I have

  1258. many in

  1259. this city

  1260. who are

  1261. my people?

  1262. Alright?

  1263. And again,

  1264. Paul was

  1265. discouraged.

  1266. Paul was

  1267. frustrated.

  1268. frustrated.

  1269. And I

  1270. know I

  1271. can speak

  1272. for the

  1273. Andersons

  1274. because I

  1275. know Caleb

  1276. very,

  1277. very well.

  1278. It's a

  1279. personal drive

  1280. to know

  1281. that God

  1282. has a

  1283. people in

  1284. Southeast Asia

  1285. that He's

  1286. going to

  1287. use them

  1288. to reach.

  1289. It's not

  1290. just like,

  1291. well,

  1292. coincidence,

  1293. I hope so.

  1294. It's not

  1295. wishful thinking.

  1296. It drives

  1297. us to

  1298. share the

  1299. gospel.

  1300. Now,

  1301. let me give

  1302. you some

  1303. other verses

  1304. that support

  1305. this.

  1306. In John

  1307. 10,

  1308. 16,

  1309. Jesus says,

  1310. I have

  1311. other sheep

  1312. that are

  1313. not of

  1314. this fold.

  1315. He means

  1316. Israel.

  1317. Right?

  1318. I must

  1319. bring them

  1320. in also,

  1321. and they

  1322. will listen

  1323. to my

  1324. voice,

  1325. so there

  1326. will be

  1327. one flock

  1328. with one

  1329. shepherd.

  1330. So meaning

  1331. that there

  1332. are a

  1333. people scattered

  1334. abroad that

  1335. need to be

  1336. brought in

  1337. to the

  1338. full number

  1339. of God's

  1340. flock.

  1341. John

  1342. 11,

  1343. 51 and

  1344. 52,

  1345. where

  1346. Caiaphas

  1347. prophesies

  1348. about the

  1349. death of

  1350. Jesus.

  1351. Now,

  1352. it says,

  1353. he did not

  1354. say this

  1355. on his own

  1356. accord,

  1357. but being

  1358. the high

  1359. priest that

  1360. year,

  1361. he prophesied

  1362. that Jesus

  1363. would die

  1364. for the

  1365. nation.

  1366. Then John

  1367. inserts this

  1368. interpretation

  1369. of that event.

  1370. He says,

  1371. and not for

  1372. the nation

  1373. only,

  1374. but also

  1375. to gather

  1376. into one

  1377. the children

  1378. of God

  1379. who were

  1380. scattered

  1381. abroad.

  1382. Right?

  1383. So meaning

  1384. that God

  1385. has a

  1386. people out

  1387. there,

  1388. and this

  1389. drove Paul.

  1390. Like,

  1391. he says

  1392. in 2 Timothy

  1393. 2,

  1394. 10,

  1395. Paul says,

  1396. why does

  1397. Paul go

  1398. through all

  1399. that he

  1400. goes through?

  1401. Good question.

  1402. Why is he

  1403. beaten?

  1404. Why is he

  1405. forsaken?

  1406. Why is he

  1407. starved?

  1408. Why does

  1409. he lose

  1410. everything for

  1411. Jesus?

  1412. And then he

  1413. says it right

  1414. here.

  1415. He says,

  1416. I endure

  1417. everything for

  1418. the sake

  1419. of the

  1420. elect,

  1421. that they

  1422. also may

  1423. obtain the

  1424. salvation.

  1425. Some of you

  1426. have heard

  1427. this analogy,

  1428. so oh well,

  1429. if you've

  1430. heard it

  1431. before,

  1432. I'm going

  1433. to share

  1434. it again.

  1435. But when

  1436. I was in

  1437. college at

  1438. North Georgia,

  1439. my senior

  1440. year,

  1441. this was

  1442. probably

  1443. 2006,

  1444. maybe,

  1445. Wes

  1446. Shonat and

  1447. I were

  1448. asked by

  1449. a club

  1450. on campus

  1451. called the

  1452. Gay

  1453. Straight

  1454. Alliance.

  1455. So it's

  1456. like homosexuals

  1457. and straight

  1458. people who

  1459. are trying to

  1460. hang out and

  1461. like get to

  1462. understand each

  1463. other,

  1464. kind of club.

  1465. It still

  1466. exists today,

  1467. it's under a

  1468. different name,

  1469. I just found

  1470. out.

  1471. But we were

  1472. asked to come

  1473. and share about

  1474. what the Bible

  1475. says about

  1476. homosexuality.

  1477. me and Wes

  1478. were like,

  1479. okay.

  1480. And so

  1481. we got

  1482. there on

  1483. campus and

  1484. this room

  1485. was packed,

  1486. I mean,

  1487. there was a

  1488. lot of

  1489. people in

  1490. this room.

  1491. For those

  1492. students who

  1493. were here,

  1494. it's in

  1495. Newton Oaks,

  1496. the classroom

  1497. that has

  1498. little decks

  1499. that go up.

  1500. We're in the

  1501. very back,

  1502. we just got

  1503. there late,

  1504. we're in the

  1505. very back.

  1506. And so

  1507. basically,

  1508. you know,

  1509. we're walking

  1510. there pretty

  1511. nervous.

  1512. I do most

  1513. of the talking,

  1514. if y'all know

  1515. Wes,

  1516. like Wes,

  1517. whatever Wes

  1518. says is just

  1519. like,

  1520. you know,

  1521. he doesn't say

  1522. a lot,

  1523. but when he

  1524. does,

  1525. it's just like

  1526. he just nails

  1527. it.

  1528. So he was

  1529. like picking

  1530. up my

  1531. messes as

  1532. I went.

  1533. But I

  1534. want you to

  1535. put your

  1536. stuff in my

  1537. position for a

  1538. minute,

  1539. right?

  1540. I feel like

  1541. you're walking

  1542. into the

  1543. lion's den,

  1544. sort of.

  1545. And,

  1546. but I

  1547. prayed on

  1548. the way

  1549. there a

  1550. lot,

  1551. and even

  1552. while I

  1553. was there.

  1554. But I

  1555. want you to

  1556. just imagine

  1557. this.

  1558. Imagine I

  1559. pray and I

  1560. think,

  1561. do you,

  1562. what's going

  1563. to happen?

  1564. Like,

  1565. Lord,

  1566. I'm nervous,

  1567. like what's

  1568. going to

  1569. happen?

  1570. How would

  1571. it make you

  1572. feel if God

  1573. replied,

  1574. I don't

  1575. know.

  1576. I'll be

  1577. sure to do

  1578. a good job

  1579. of sharing

  1580. the gospel.

  1581. Don't mess

  1582. it up.

  1583. Like,

  1584. hopefully,

  1585. me and

  1586. Jesus and

  1587. the Holy

  1588. Spirit will

  1589. keep our

  1590. fingers crossed

  1591. and hopefully

  1592. somebody will

  1593. listen to you

  1594. and give their

  1595. life to Jesus.

  1596. But I have

  1597. no idea.

  1598. I go,

  1599. oh,

  1600. it would be

  1601. like a

  1602. really scary

  1603. prospect.

  1604. But,

  1605. thankfully,

  1606. that's not

  1607. how it is.

  1608. Right?

  1609. Now,

  1610. I'll give you

  1611. the other

  1612. scenario.

  1613. God answers

  1614. instead,

  1615. hey,

  1616. I know

  1617. you're scared,

  1618. I know

  1619. you're nervous,

  1620. people are

  1621. going to

  1622. make fun

  1623. of you,

  1624. people are

  1625. going to

  1626. mock you,

  1627. but stick

  1628. with it.

  1629. I'm going

  1630. to be there

  1631. and I'm

  1632. going to

  1633. help you.

  1634. I'm going

  1635. to use

  1636. the words

  1637. that come

  1638. out of

  1639. your mouth

  1640. to save

  1641. three people

  1642. in that

  1643. room.

  1644. Like,

  1645. if I knew

  1646. that God

  1647. was going

  1648. to work,

  1649. it would

  1650. drive me

  1651. to go.

  1652. Does that

  1653. make sense?

  1654. It gives

  1655. you confidence

  1656. to go.

  1657. It doesn't

  1658. discourage you

  1659. to go.

  1660. This means

  1661. that his

  1662. mission,

  1663. the blood

  1664. of Christ,

  1665. is not

  1666. spilt by

  1667. accident.

  1668. It's not

  1669. wasted.

  1670. He has a

  1671. people that

  1672. he's going

  1673. to save.

  1674. He said

  1675. three times

  1676. in John

  1677. 17,

  1678. those whom

  1679. you have

  1680. given me

  1681. out of the

  1682. world,

  1683. he says

  1684. that to

  1685. the Father,

  1686. my sheep

  1687. hear my

  1688. voice.

  1689. Right?

  1690. And so

  1691. God was

  1692. saying,

  1693. I have

  1694. many in

  1695. this city

  1696. who are

  1697. my people.

  1698. Go.

  1699. Proclaim.

  1700. Don't be

  1701. afraid.

  1702. I'm going

  1703. to use

  1704. what you

  1705. say,

  1706. the gospel

  1707. coming out

  1708. of your

  1709. mouth,

  1710. to bring

  1711. them to

  1712. faith.

  1713. And that's

  1714. why Paul

  1715. says,

  1716. I endure

  1717. all things

  1718. for the

  1719. sake of

  1720. the elect.

  1721. Right?

  1722. So that's

  1723. a huge

  1724. one.

  1725. It's the

  1726. means to

  1727. the greatest

  1728. end.

  1729. God has

  1730. ordained

  1731. the ends,

  1732. which is

  1733. the salvation

  1734. of souls.

  1735. He's also

  1736. ordained the

  1737. way that

  1738. is to

  1739. happen.

  1740. So we

  1741. see there,

  1742. you know,

  1743. Romans 10,

  1744. like,

  1745. we must

  1746. send people.

  1747. This is

  1748. what drives

  1749. us to

  1750. go.

  1751. All right?

  1752. Thirdly,

  1753. that was the

  1754. longest one.

  1755. Thirdly,

  1756. the proclamation

  1757. of God's

  1758. glory in

  1759. the gospel.

  1760. All right?

  1761. If you look

  1762. at verse 5,

  1763. he says that

  1764. Paul was

  1765. bearing witness,

  1766. he was

  1767. testifying that

  1768. Jesus was

  1769. the Christ,

  1770. the Christ

  1771. was Jesus.

  1772. All right?

  1773. And so the

  1774. gospel is a

  1775. heralding

  1776. thing.

  1777. You go and

  1778. you proclaim

  1779. the greatness

  1780. and glory

  1781. of God

  1782. and salvation.

  1783. You put

  1784. his glory

  1785. on display

  1786. when you

  1787. share the

  1788. gospel.

  1789. You talk

  1790. about his

  1791. grace.

  1792. You talk

  1793. about redemption,

  1794. the forgiveness

  1795. we have

  1796. because of

  1797. what Christ

  1798. has accomplished

  1799. by the

  1800. shedding of

  1801. his blood.

  1802. And God

  1803. desires to

  1804. save a

  1805. people from

  1806. every tribe,

  1807. language,

  1808. and nation.

  1809. And he

  1810. will do it.

  1811. It's not like

  1812. we hope

  1813. he will.

  1814. He will.

  1815. He has

  1816. bought these

  1817. people with

  1818. his blood.

  1819. So it is

  1820. about proclaiming

  1821. the greatness

  1822. and glory of

  1823. God in the

  1824. gospel.

  1825. That God

  1826. desires that

  1827. praise from

  1828. every nation,

  1829. every group,

  1830. every tongue,

  1831. so that the

  1832. children of God

  1833. will one day

  1834. come together

  1835. and proclaim

  1836. his glory in

  1837. heaven.

  1838. All right?

  1839. I'll back that

  1840. up.

  1841. Psalm 67,

  1842. 2 and 4.

  1843. that your

  1844. way may be

  1845. known on

  1846. the earth,

  1847. your saving

  1848. power among

  1849. the nations.

  1850. Let the

  1851. peoples praise

  1852. you,

  1853. O God.

  1854. Let all the

  1855. peoples praise

  1856. you.

  1857. Let the

  1858. nations be

  1859. glad and

  1860. sing for

  1861. joy,

  1862. for you

  1863. judge the

  1864. peoples with

  1865. equity.

  1866. And in the

  1867. most well-known

  1868. Revelation 7,

  1869. right?

  1870. I looked and

  1871. behold a great

  1872. multitude that

  1873. no one could

  1874. number from

  1875. every nation,

  1876. from all the

  1877. tribes and

  1878. peoples and

  1879. languages,

  1880. standing before

  1881. the throne and

  1882. before the

  1883. Lamb,

  1884. clothed in

  1885. white robes,

  1886. with palm

  1887. branches in

  1888. their hands,

  1889. and crying out

  1890. with a loud

  1891. voice,

  1892. salvation belongs

  1893. to our God

  1894. who sits on

  1895. the throne and

  1896. to the Lamb.

  1897. That's the

  1898. goal.

  1899. We're bringing

  1900. in these people

  1901. from all the

  1902. nations,

  1903. to gather

  1904. before the

  1905. throne.

  1906. Livingston,

  1907. a missionary

  1908. into Africa,

  1909. he wrote to

  1910. his wife,

  1911. I know that

  1912. you wish as

  1913. ardently as

  1914. I that the

  1915. whole earth

  1916. will be filled

  1917. with the

  1918. glory of

  1919. the Lord.

  1920. That is

  1921. our drive.

  1922. And then

  1923. the last

  1924. apple,

  1925. well,

  1926. joy

  1927. inexpressible.

  1928. All right?

  1929. God has

  1930. given us the

  1931. privilege of

  1932. being his

  1933. messengers,

  1934. the privilege.

  1935. John Newton

  1936. said that he

  1937. was shocked

  1938. that not only

  1939. God would

  1940. save him,

  1941. but then he

  1942. would give

  1943. him the

  1944. privilege of

  1945. being the

  1946. messenger of

  1947. the same

  1948. gospel that

  1949. saved him.

  1950. Like that is

  1951. something that

  1952. ought to try

  1953. to accord with

  1954. us.

  1955. That we are

  1956. messengers of

  1957. that message

  1958. that saved

  1959. us.

  1960. And that our

  1961. hearts should be

  1962. filled with

  1963. such love and

  1964. joy and

  1965. gratitude for

  1966. God and what

  1967. he's done for

  1968. us that it

  1969. spills out onto

  1970. other people who

  1971. are around us.

  1972. If it's just

  1973. simply a duty

  1974. and a command,

  1975. you'll quit.

  1976. It'll get

  1977. boring, it'll get

  1978. old, it won't

  1979. be worth it.

  1980. But guess

  1981. what?

  1982. We talk about

  1983. what we love.

  1984. Pretty simple.

  1985. We spend our

  1986. money on it, we

  1987. spend our time

  1988. on it, and we

  1989. talk about what

  1990. we love.

  1991. We talk about

  1992. sports.

  1993. We talk about

  1994. other hobbies.

  1995. And we talk

  1996. about the stuff

  1997. that is near and

  1998. dear to us.

  1999. It comes out of

  2000. our mouth.

  2001. We talk about

  2002. the people that

  2003. we love.

  2004. Right?

  2005. If you don't

  2006. talk about the

  2007. Lord, there's just

  2008. something there.

  2009. I'm not making

  2010. any kind of

  2011. hard line

  2012. inference.

  2013. But Jesus

  2014. says, I'm

  2015. the overflow

  2016. of the heart.

  2017. The mouth

  2018. speaks.

  2019. So what do

  2020. you talk

  2021. about?

  2022. And if

  2023. Christ is the

  2024. love of our

  2025. life, if he is

  2026. all to us, we

  2027. will talk about

  2028. him.

  2029. And we'll talk

  2030. about him

  2031. indiscriminately

  2032. around people.

  2033. I love this in

  2034. Jeremiah

  2035. verse 20, I

  2036. mean chapter 20

  2037. verse 9.

  2038. Jeremiah says,

  2039. if I will

  2040. say, it is in

  2041. my heart as it

  2042. were a burning

  2043. fire shut up in

  2044. my bones, and I

  2045. am weary of

  2046. holding it in, and

  2047. indeed I cannot.

  2048. You feel that

  2049. way?

  2050. Or you think

  2051. about James and

  2052. Peter and John

  2053. when they were

  2054. dragged before the

  2055. synagogue in Acts

  2056. 4.

  2057. And they say,

  2058. stop talking about

  2059. Jesus.

  2060. And they say,

  2061. well, whether it's

  2062. right in the sight

2063. of God for us to

  2064. listen to you

  2065. rather than to

  2066. God, you must

  2067. judge.

  2068. But for we cannot

  2069. help to speak

  2070. what we have seen

  2071. and heard.

  2072. They have to.

  2073. They're compelled

  2074. to speak about it.

  2075. So it overflows

  2076. from us.

  2077. It completes our

  2078. joy to talk about

  2079. the one that we

  2080. love.

  2081. So those reasons,

  2082. one of those

  2083. reasons alone will

  2084. be enough.

  2085. But I've given you

  2086. four.

  2087. Right?

  2088. So God has a

  2089. people that we

  2090. ought to go and

  2091. reach.

  2092. And this isn't

  2093. for just people

  2094. who do full-time

  2095. marriage like me,

  2096. Nathan, Josh in

  2097. the back.

  2098. Like, we are all

  2099. meant to be heralds

  2100. of the good news.

  2101. We have different

  2102. time.

  2103. We have different

  2104. capacities.

  2105. But there's people

  2106. that you're around

  2107. that I will never

  2108. see.

  2109. Right?

  2110. And we are meant

  2111. to bear witness to

  2112. them about the

  2113. Son of God.

  2114. In what capacity

  2115. God has given you

  2116. to do that?

  2117. To be faithful to

  2118. that.

  2119. Be prayerful.

  2120. So in

  2121. clothing,

  2122. I want to just

  2123. challenge us to

  2124. think about how

  2125. the Lord saved

  2126. our soul.

  2127. I occasionally

  2128. like to do this.

  2129. Maybe reach out

  2130. with somebody this

  2131. week that was

  2132. instrumental in

  2133. bringing you to

  2134. know the Lord.

  2135. A parent, a

  2136. friend, a loved

  2137. one, a teacher,

  2138. a coach, whoever

  2139. it is.

  2140. And just thank

  2141. them for being

  2142. faithful to share

  2143. with you.

  2144. And I hope that

  2145. this has been

  2146. encouraging.

  2147. I hope that this

  2148. has given you a

  2149. desire to go with

  2150. confidence to go

  2151. and fulfill God's

  2152. mission.

  2153. He will do it.

  2154. He's going to do

  2155. it with or without

  2156. you.

  2157. Alright?

  2158. So why not be

  2159. faithful and be a

  2160. partaker of that

  2161. mission and experience

  2162. the joy of that

  2163. mission and have

  2164. eternal reward with

  2165. the Lord one day.

  2166. Let's pray together.
