  1. Well, good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word. Join me in Romans chapter 11.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today is Romans chapter 11, verses 25 through 36, which is to the end of the chapter.

    Romans 11:25–36

  3. We're doing it. We're making it through chapter 11 today, Lord willing. Something could happen to me in the next 30 to 45 minutes.

  4. We have been wading in the deep waters of difficult texts these past weeks.

  5. Today, we're going to finish our consideration of chapter 11, which deserves a warning before we plumb its depths.

  6. Last week, I issued the warning. This week, I'm going to read to you a warning from the pulpit of Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  7. He said, and I quote,

  8. We must be careful that our proper interest in the content of this chapter does not become carnal excitement.

  9. That is, mental excitement.

  10. There is more than one way of being excited.

  11. We can be excited intellectually as well as emotionally.

  12. I warn those who are keen to find out what is going on to be said on this matter, or that, and particularly, on so shall all Israel be saved.

  13. This attitude is quite inappropriate when one comes to study the Scriptures.

  14. Let us remind ourselves at the outset of two things which we find in this chapter.

  15. The first is that the Apostle refers in it to a mystery.

  16. If, therefore, we think that we have this chapter all sorted out and tabulated, and that there could be no other view worth considering, we are already wrong.

  17. But the second is the way in which the Apostle concludes this chapter.

  18. Having written it, he finds in himself a state of mind and heart in which he can think of and do nothing else but praise and worship God.

  19. Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God.

  20. The consideration of this truth had that effect on him.

  21. So it should on us and on all who consider it.

  22. And that is what we now begin to do.

  23. End quote.

  24. So, let's approach this text together with humility and awe that moves us to praise.

  25. Romans 11, beginning in verse 25.

  26. Let me remind you before I read it, beloved, that this is God's word to us written for his glory and our good.

  27. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  28. Let's read it in verse 26.

  29. Let's read it in verse 26.

  30. Lest you be wise in your own sight.

  31. I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers.

  32. A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

  33. And in this way all Israel will be saved.

  34. As it is written, the Deliverer will come from Zion.

  35. He will banish ungodliness from Jacob.

  36. And this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.

  37. As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake.

  38. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.

  39. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

  40. For just as you were at one time disobedient to God, but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,

  41. so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy.

  42. For God has consigned all to disobedience that he may have mercy on all.

  43. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.

  44. How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways.

  45. For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?

  46. Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?

  47. For from him and through him and to him are all things.

  48. To him be glory forever.

  49. Amen.

  50. Now, before making any comments about the details of this text,

  51. and we will not have time to talk about all the details of this text,

  52. let us set together in our minds what Paul is doing here.

  53. Remember back at the beginning of chapter 9,

  54. Paul is lamenting the unbelief of Israel as he works out the theological implications of divine election.

  55. When we arrive at chapter 11,

  56. we must see that the entirety of the chapter is framed by the question found at the beginning of verse 1.

  57. There he says,

  58. I ask then,

  59. has God rejected his people?

  60. He's working through this arc,

  61. this lament at the beginning of chapter 9,

  62. seeing that not all Jews will be saved.

  63. But has God rejected his people?

  64. He asks at the beginning of verse 1 of chapter 11.

  65. And he emphatically answers it,

  66. no.

  67. He says,

  68. by no means.

  69. Paul then offers himself as a witness to this truth.

  70. After all,

  71. God had saved him.

  72. He says,

  73. I myself have been saved.

  74. And he goes on in chapter 11 and verse 5,

  75. so too,

  76. just like in the days of Elijah,

  77. so too,

  78. at the present time,

  79. there is a remnant chosen by grace.

  80. It's about people from Israel chosen by grace.

  81. The primary doctrine of the chapter is God's faithfulness to his word and the saving of his people.

  82. The primary exhortation is for Gentile or non-Jewish followers of Christ,

  83. and it's found at the beginning of verse 18.

  84. There he says,

  85. do not be arrogant toward the branches.

  86. Right?

  87. In the middle of an analogy about branches being cut off so that they, as Gentiles, could be grafted in.

  88. He says,

  89. do not become arrogant.

  90. So you could walk away from this chapter.

  91. And I don't want to suggest for a moment that the entire chapter is not of value to us,

  92. but I want you to get, at very least, these two things.

  93. Right?

  94. In God's divine elective purpose,

  95. he has not rejected the Jewish people,

  96. and therefore,

  97. those of us who are non-Jewish Christians

  98. should not become arrogant

  99. towards the unbelief of Israel.

  100. Now, regardless of all the possible ways we can understand this chapter,

  101. we need to be careful not to miss those two points.

  102. Right?

  103. Again, God is faithful to his promises,

  104. and we,

  105. assuming you're like me,

  106. non-Jewish,

  107. should still see that God has a saving purpose for Israel.

  108. Paul compounds his exhortation against arrogance in verse 25.

  109. Boy, excuse me.

  110. I'm still fighting this cold a bit.

  111. There he says,

  112. lest you be wise in your own sight.

  113. I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery,

  114. brothers.

  115. A partial hardening has come upon Israel

  116. until the fullness of the Gentiles

  117. has come in.

  118. This mystery is that God,

  119. in his divine purpose,

  120. is employing a gospel-rejecting strategy

  121. for the sake of Gentiles,

  122. the Jews rejecting the gospel

  123. for the sake of the Gentiles,

  124. and a jealousy-provoking strategy

  125. for the sake of Jews,

  126. which we talked about at length last week.

  127. The purpose of God hardening some Jews

  128. who were unbelieving

  129. was that Gentiles would be saved.

  130. God working out his elective purpose

  131. through it all.

  132. So Gentile believer,

  133. do not become proud.

  134. Do not think yourself wise.

  135. God is mercifully saving his people.

  136. And this brings us to the challenge

  137. of today's text.

  138. And I am saying to you,

  139. it is a challenge.

  140. Some of the language here is difficult.

  141. And we see that summarized

  142. at the beginning of verse 26

  143. and explained throughout the end of verse 32.

  144. So let's read these verses all together again

  145. just to set them in our mind.

  146. Verse 26 through 32.

  147. And in this way,

  148. he's referring back to the fullness

  149. of the Gentiles coming in.

  150. It's a direct reference

  151. to the phrase previous to that

  152. in verse 25.

  153. And in this way,

  154. all Israel will be saved.

  155. As it is written,

  156. the deliverer will come from Zion.

  157. He will banish ungodliness from Jacob.

  158. And this will be my covenant with them.

  159. when I take away their sins.

  160. As regards the gospel,

  161. they are enemies for your sake.

  162. But as regards election,

  163. they are beloved for the sake

  164. of their forefathers.

  165. For the gifts and the calling of God

  166. are irrevocable.

  167. They can't be taken away.

  168. For just as you were at one time

  169. disobedient to God,

  170. but now have received mercy

  171. because of their disobedience,

  172. so they too have now been disobedient

  173. in order that by the mercy shown to you,

  174. they also may now receive mercy.

  175. Right?

  176. Gospel rejecting strategy

  177. for the sake of Gentiles.

  178. Right?

  179. Gospel jealousy

  180. for the sake of Jews.

  181. For God has consigned

  182. all to disobedience

  183. that he may have mercy

  184. on all.

  185. Now,

  186. up to this point in the chapter,

  187. Paul has been making his case

  188. in the present tense.

  189. Right?

  190. Paul is writing.

  191. What is going on right now?

  192. What is he observing

  193. is happening in his day?

  194. And now he turns

  195. his writing and our minds

  196. eschatologically,

  197. that is,

  198. toward the end of the age.

  199. He is still speaking

  200. of God's present work,

  201. but he has fixed his gaze

  202. on the full realization

  203. of God's saving purpose.

  204. Now,

  205. we will not have the bandwidth

  206. this morning

  207. to pull apart

  208. each of those phrases.

  209. And frankly,

  210. you'll ask me

  211. and I'll go,

  212. yep,

  213. that's an interesting

  214. turn of phrase there.

  215. So,

  216. we're going to structure

  217. the study of our text

  218. this morning

  219. by thinking about

  220. what could be possibly

  221. meant by the phrase,

  222. in this way,

  223. all Israel

  224. will be saved.

  225. Right?

  226. Particularly that

  227. all Israel.

  228. What does that mean?

  229. And you can find

  230. many interpretations

  231. of this text.

  232. And this morning

  233. I'm just going to cover

  234. the four most common.

  235. And I'm going to begin

  236. with those least probable

  237. and move to those

  238. most probable.

  239. And I will tell you

  240. with a great deal

  241. of trembling

  242. what I think it means.

  243. So,

  244. here we go.

  245. Number one,

  246. least probable

  247. to the most probable

  248. interpretations.

  249. So,

  250. number one,

  251. all Israel means

  252. every ethnic Jew

  253. throughout history

  254. will be saved.

  255. Right?

  256. That's one position.

  257. Right?

  258. All Israel means

  259. every ethnic Jew

  260. throughout history

  261. will be saved.

  262. And we find

  263. some evidence

  264. to support

  265. this position

  266. in verse 12

  267. as an example

  268. of chapter 11.

  269. If their trespass

  270. means riches

  271. for the world

  272. and if their failure

  273. means riches

  274. for the Gentiles,

  275. how much more

  276. will their

  277. full inclusion

  278. mean?

  279. And in today's text,

  280. specifically,

  281. verse 28

  282. and verse 32,

  283. right?

  284. As regards election,

  285. they are beloved

  286. for the sake

  287. of their forefathers.

  288. Broad reference

  289. to Israel.

  290. Verse 32,

  291. for God has

  292. consigned

  293. all to disobedience

  294. that he may

  295. have mercy

  296. on all.

  297. Now,

  298. if we take

  299. the phrase

  300. all Israel

  301. in verse 12

  302. and 28

  303. and 32

  304. at face value,

  305. then it would be

  306. proper to conclude

  307. that in God's

  308. divine purpose,

  309. every ethnic Jew

  310. throughout history

  311. will be saved.

  312. So how can we

  313. know that this

  314. is not the

  315. proper way

  316. to interpret

  317. this text?

  318. We can know

  319. this because

  320. if this is

  321. what Paul means,

  322. then he would

  323. have no reason

  324. to be grieved

  325. by the unbelief

  326. of Jewish people.

  327. Why would he

  328. be concerned

  329. at all

  330. if he believes

  331. that in the end

  332. all ethnically

  333. Jewish people

  334. will be

  335. saved?

  336. Remember back

  337. Romans chapter 9,

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  338. and I've referenced

  339. it a few times,

  340. but just hear it

  341. beginning in verse 1.

  342. He says,

  343. I'm speaking the

  344. truth in Christ.

  345. I am not lying.

  346. My conscience

  347. bears me witness

  348. in the Holy Spirit

  349. that I have

  350. great sorrow

  351. and unceasing

  352. anguish

  353. in my heart.

  354. Why is this?

  355. Because he's been

  356. talking about

  357. God's elective purpose

  358. at the end

  359. of chapter 8.

  360. In order to

  361. found our faith

  362. on God's work

  363. in our lives,

  364. who shall separate

  365. us from the love

  366. of Christ?

  367. No one is his

  368. answer.

  369. And what he does

  370. with that then,

  371. he says,

  372. but what about

  373. those unbelieving

  374. Jewish people?

  375. He has great

  376. sorrow and

  377. unceasing

  378. anguish

  379. in his heart.

  380. And then verse 3

  381. says,

  382. for I could wish

  383. that I myself

  384. were accursed

  385. and cut off

  386. from Christ

  387. for the sake

  388. of my brothers,

  389. my kinsmen,

  390. according to the

  391. flesh.

  392. He's so grieved

  393. that he himself

  394. would be separated

  395. from Christ

  396. for their

  397. sake,

  398. that they would

  399. believe the

  400. gospel.

  401. He would have

  402. no reason

  403. to feel this

  404. way at all,

  405. to feel it so

  406. strongly,

  407. if in just a few

  408. short chapters

  409. he's going to

  410. teach us that

  411. all ethnic

  412. Jews will be

  413. saved.

  414. Additionally,

  415. we can see

  416. in chapter 11

  417. that not all

  418. Jewish people

  419. were saved

  420. in his

  421. day.

  422. So he's a

  423. witness to

  424. this.

  425. Look at the

  426. beginning of

  427. the chapter,

  428. verse 2

  429. through 7.

  430. Again,

  431. he's answering

  432. this question,

  433. has God

  434. rejected his

  435. people?

  436. And he says,

  437. God has not

  438. rejected his

  439. people,

  440. whom he

  441. foreknew.

  442. He qualifies

  443. it there.

  444. Do you not

  445. know what the

  446. scripture says

  447. of Elijah,

  448. how he appeals

  449. to God

  450. against Israel?

  451. Remember,

  452. you may know

  453. the story of

  454. Elijah.

  455. He had

  456. issued this

  457. challenge against

  458. the prophets

  459. of Baal.

  460. It's the

  461. altars and

  462. the altars

  463. that burn

  464. and the

  465. altars that

  466. don't burn.

  467. This major

  468. victory has

  469. taken place

  470. and yet

  471. his life

  472. is being

  473. sought.

  474. All of

  475. Israel hasn't

  476. turned back

  477. the way he

  478. had hoped

  479. would happen

  480. and so he

  481. issues this

  482. complaint and

  483. we see the

  484. record of it

  485. there in

  486. verse 3.

  487. Lord,

  488. they have

  489. killed your

  490. prophets,

  491. they have

  492. demolished

  493. your altars

  494. and I

  495. alone am

  496. left and

  497. they seek

  498. my life.

  499. And then

  500. Paul asks,

  501. but what is

  502. God's reply

  503. to him?

  504. God says,

  505. I have

  506. kept for

  507. myself

  508. 7,000 men

  509. who have

  510. not bowed

  511. the knee

  512. to Baal.

  513. So there's

  514. a remnant

  515. that is

  516. kept

  517. faithful.

  518. So too,

  519. Paul says,

  520. verse 5,

  521. at the

  522. present time

  523. there is

  524. a remnant

  525. chosen

  526. by grace.

  527. And then

  528. he makes

  529. the point,

  530. but if it

  531. is by grace,

  532. it is no

  533. longer on

  534. the basis

  535. of works,

  536. otherwise grace

  537. would no

  538. longer be

  539. grace.

  540. What then,

  541. verse 7,

  542. Israel failed

  543. to obtain

  544. what it

  545. was seeking,

  546. the elect

  547. obtained it,

  548. but the

  549. rest were

  550. hardened.

  551. So,

  552. in Paul's

  553. day,

  554. not all

  555. Jewish

  556. people are

  557. going to

  558. be saved.

  559. In the

  560. days of

  561. Elijah,

  562. not all

  563. Jewish

  564. people were

  565. saved.

  566. And I

  567. would suggest

  568. to you,

  569. in our

  570. day,

  571. not all

  572. Jewish

  573. people

  574. are

  575. saved.

  576. Further,

  577. this view

  578. would also

  579. have to

  580. support the

  581. idea that

  582. a person

  583. can be

  584. saved

  585. apart

  586. from

  587. faith

  588. in the

  589. person

  590. and

  591. work

  592. of

  593. Christ,

  594. which

  595. just

  596. isn't

  597. the case

  598. and rips

  599. this chapter

  600. from

  601. its

  602. surrounding

  603. context.

  604. If you

  605. look back

  606. just a

  607. chapter,

  608. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  609. chapter 10,

  610. we don't

  611. have to

  612. go far

  613. in Paul's

  614. theology.

  615. He says,

  616. verse 12,

  617. there is no

  618. distinction between

  619. Jew and

  620. Greek,

  621. for the

  622. same Lord

  623. is Lord

  624. of all,

  625. bestowing

  626. his riches

  627. on all

  628. who call

  629. on him.

  630. For everyone

  631. who calls

  632. on the name

  633. of the

  634. Lord

  635. will be

  636. saved.

  637. How then

  638. will they

  639. call on him

  640. in whom

  641. they have

  642. not

  643. believed?

  644. He's asking

  645. rhetorical

  646. questions.

  647. And how

  648. are they

  649. to believe

  650. in him

  651. of whom

  652. they have

  653. never

  654. heard?

  655. And how

  656. are they

  657. to hear

  658. without

  659. someone

  660. preaching?

  661. And how

  662. are they

  663. to preach

  664. unless they

  665. are sent

  666. as it

  667. is written?

  668. How

  669. beautiful

  670. are the

  671. feet

  672. of those

  673. who

  674. preach

  675. the good

  676. news.

  677. So Paul's

  678. already made

  679. the case

  680. that we

  681. will be

  682. saved,

  683. we call

  684. on the

  685. name of

  686. Christ,

  687. but for

  688. us to

  689. do that

  690. we have

  691. to know

  692. the gospel

  693. of Jesus

  694. Christ.

  695. It has

  696. to be

  697. preached

  698. to us

  699. that we

  700. might

  701. believe

  702. in it.

  703. Just a few

  704. verses later,

  705. verse 17,

  706. chapter 10,

  707. he says,

  708. so faith

  709. comes from

  710. hearing,

  711. and hearing

  712. through the

  713. word

  714. of Christ.

  715. So,

  716. it's one

  717. position,

  718. all Israel

  719. means every

  720. ethnic Jew

  721. throughout

  722. history

  723. will be

  724. saved,

  725. which I

  726. think we

  727. do well

  728. to reject

  729. altogether.

  730. Second,

  731. probable,

  732. little more

  733. probable

  734. position.

  735. All

  736. Israel

  737. means

  738. the

  739. church.

  740. This

  741. position

  742. holds

  743. that Paul

  744. is not

  745. talking

  746. about

  747. ethnic

  748. Israel

  749. at this

  750. point,

  751. but all

  752. those who

  753. will ever

  754. be saved

  755. by Christ.

  756. Proponents

  757. of this

  758. view

  759. appeal

  760. to

  761. texts

  762. like

  763. Romans

    Romans 2:28

  764. chapter 2,

  765. verse 28

  766. and 29.

  767. There Paul

  768. says,

  769. for no

  770. one is

  771. a Jew

  772. who is

  773. merely

  774. one

  775. outwardly,

  776. nor

  777. is

  778. circumcision

  779. outward

  780. and

  781. physical,

  782. but a

  783. Jew

  784. is

  785. one

  786. inwardly,

  787. and

  788. circumcision

  789. is a

  790. matter

  791. of the

  792. heart,

  793. by the

  794. spirit,

  795. not by

  796. the

  797. letter.

  798. His

  799. praise

  800. is not

  801. from

  802. man,

  803. but

  804. from

  805. God.

  806. And

  807. chapter 9,

  808. verses 6

  809. through 8.

  810. But it's not

  811. as though the

  812. word of God

  813. has failed,

  814. for not

  815. all who

  816. are

  817. descended

  818. from

  819. Israel

  820. belong

  821. to

  822. Israel,

  823. and

  824. not

  825. all

  826. are

  827. children

  828. of

  829. Abraham

  830. because

  831. they are

  832. his

  833. offspring,

  834. but

  835. through

  836. Isaac

  837. shall

  838. your

  839. offspring

  840. be

  841. named.

  842. This

  843. means

  844. it is

  845. not

  846. the

  847. children

  848. of

  849. the

  850. flesh

  851. who

  852. are

  853. the

  854. children

  855. of

  856. God,

  857. but

  858. the

  859. children

  860. of

  861. the

  862. promise

  863. are

  864. counted

  865. as

  866. offspring.

  867. So he's

  868. saying,

  869. and he makes

  870. the case

  871. in other

  872. places

  873. as well,

  874. that there's

  875. a spiritual

  876. Israel

  877. that's

  878. saved

  879. by

  880. God.

  881. And I

  882. like this

  883. position

  884. for its

  885. intended

  886. tidiness,

  887. but I

  888. find it

  889. very

  890. difficult

  891. to

  892. support

  893. it

  894. in

  895. the

  896. immediate

  897. context.

  898. He sure

  899. seems to

  900. be talking

  901. about

  902. ethnically

  903. Jewish

  904. people,

  905. especially

  906. as he's

  907. talking about

  908. their

  909. rejection

  910. for the

  911. sake

  912. of

  913. Gentiles,

  914. as you

  915. read

  916. through

  917. chapter

  918. 11.

  919. I'd

  920. love to

  921. unlock

  922. some

  923. kind

  924. of,

  925. you know,

  926. have

  927. the

  928. key

  929. and

  930. unlock

  931. it

  932. and

  933. show

  934. you

  935. that

  936. that's

  937. what

  938. it

  939. means.

  940. I

  941. just

  942. think

  943. it's

  944. really

  945. difficult

  946. to

  947. make

  948. that

  949. case.

  950. Two

  951. examples

  952. from

  953. Romans

  954. 11.

  955. Paul

  956. there

  957. is not

  958. only

  959. saying

  960. that he

  961. is an

  962. Israelite,

  963. but he

  964. goes on

  965. to talk

  966. about

  967. ethnically.

  968. He's

  969. very

  970. clear.

  971. That's

  972. what he's

  973. saying.

  974. A

  975. descendant

  976. of

  977. Abraham,

  978. a

  979. member

  980. of

  981. the

  982. tribe

  983. of

  984. Benjamin.

  985. And

  986. then in

  987. our

  988. text

  989. today,

  990. verse

  991. 25,

  992. must

  993. you be

  994. wise in

  995. your own

  996. sight.

  997. Don't

  998. be

  999. unaware

  1000. of

  1001. this

  1002. mystery,

  1003. brothers.

  1004. A

  1005. partial

  1006. hardening

  1007. has

  1008. come

  1009. upon

  1010. Israel

  1011. until

  1012. the

  1013. fullness

  1014. of

  1015. the

  1016. Gentiles

  1017. has

  1018. come

  1019. in.

  1020. There

  1021. he's

  1022. talking

  1023. about

  1024. ethnic

  1025. groups

  1026. in

  1027. that

  1028. case.

  1029. So

  1030. it's

  1031. very

  1032. tidy.

  1033. I

  1034. really

  1035. would

  1036. love

  1037. for

  1038. it

  1039. to

  1040. be

  1041. the

  1042. case,

  1043. but

  1044. I

  1045. also

  1046. think

  1047. we

  1048. can

  1049. safely

  1050. and

  1051. we

  1052. do

  1053. well

  1054. to

  1055. reject

  1056. this

  1057. position.

  1058. I

  1059. stated

  1060. that we

  1061. move

  1062. from

  1063. less

  1064. probable

  1065. to

  1066. more

  1067. probable

  1068. interpretations.

  1069. To

  1070. be

  1071. clear,

  1072. I

  1073. find

  1074. those

  1075. first

  1076. two

  1077. previously

  1078. stated

  1079. positions

  1080. to be

  1081. impossible

  1082. and so

  1083. just

  1084. wrong.

  1085. Now we

  1086. move on

  1087. to two

  1088. positions

  1089. I find

  1090. actually

  1091. probable.

  1092. So the

  1093. third,

  1094. all Israel

  1095. means a

  1096. dramatic

  1097. future

  1098. salvation

  1099. for ethnic

  1100. Jews.

  1101. A dramatic

  1102. future

  1103. salvation

  1104. for ethnic

  1105. Jews.

  1106. Jews

  1107. this

  1108. is

  1109. a

  1110. popularly

  1111. held

  1112. position.

  1113. The

  1114. holders

  1115. of it

  1116. have

  1117. their

  1118. variations

  1119. in the

  1120. specifics,

  1121. but generally

  1122. agree that

  1123. there will

  1124. be some

  1125. great

  1126. inclusion

  1127. of ethnic

  1128. Jews

  1129. into the

  1130. church

  1131. before

  1132. Christ's

  1133. return.

  1134. Most

  1135. believe

  1136. that

  1137. all Jews

  1138. alive

  1139. at that

  1140. time

  1141. is what

  1142. Paul

  1143. means

  1144. there.

  1145. this

  1146. view

  1147. is held

  1148. by men

  1149. like

  1150. John

  1151. MacArthur,

  1152. John

  1153. Piper,

  1154. and

  1155. Jonathan

  1156. Edwards.

  1157. It is

  1158. not the

  1159. view

  1160. that I

  1161. hold,

  1162. but I

  1163. always

  1164. shudder

  1165. to disagree

  1166. with the

  1167. Johns.

  1168. So

  1169. I

  1170. disagree

  1171. very loosely

  1172. and very

  1173. humbly.

  1174. This is

  1175. an orthodox

  1176. position

  1177. to hold

  1178. of this

  1179. chapter.

  1180. This view

  1181. is careful,

  1182. it is

  1183. articulate,

  1184. the fact

  1185. that throughout

  1186. the Old

  1187. Testament

  1188. of chapter

  1189. 11,

  1190. and the

  1191. fact that

  1192. throughout

  1193. the Old

  1194. Testament,

  1195. the remnant

  1196. preserved

  1197. within Israel

  1198. is always

  1199. a sign

  1200. of hope

  1201. for Israel

  1202. as a

  1203. whole.

  1204. Like I

  1205. said,

  1206. you are in

  1207. good company

  1208. if you

  1209. hold this

  1210. position,

  1211. and if

  1212. you want

  1213. to read

  1214. and understand

  1215. more about

  1216. it,

  1217. I encourage

  1218. you to

  1219. read Tom

  1220. Schreiner's

  1221. commentary

  1222. on these

  1223. verses.

  1224. It's a

  1225. position he

  1226. holds,

  1227. he does

  1228. a very

  1229. good job

  1230. of explaining

  1231. it,

  1232. and the

  1233. whole commentary

  1234. is commendable,

  1235. it's a good

  1236. resource for

  1237. a study

  1238. of Romans.

  1239. I do

  1240. find that

  1241. some of the

  1242. arguments for

  1243. this view

  1244. seem to be

  1245. carried along

  1246. by mere

  1247. optimism,

  1248. and I

  1249. try not to

  1250. be a person

  1251. who's known

  1252. as pessimistic,

  1253. I try to be

  1254. optimistic,

  1255. optimistic,

  1256. but I

  1257. also try

  1258. not to

  1259. interpret

  1260. things by

  1261. optimism.

  1262. I hold

  1263. the final

  1264. view I

  1265. will present

  1266. to you

  1267. that all

  1268. Israel means

  1269. a remnant

  1270. of ethnic

  1271. Jews

  1272. throughout

  1273. history,

  1274. which I

  1275. do not

  1276. hold

  1277. pessimistically,

  1278. but listen

  1279. to what

  1280. Schreiner says

  1281. concerning

  1282. this position.

  1283. This is to

  1284. that point,

  1285. and it

  1286. seems carried

  1287. along by

  1288. optimism.

  1289. So to

  1290. my position,

  1291. he says,

  1292. the difficulty

  1293. with the

  1294. remnant

  1295. throughout

  1296. history

  1297. interpretation

  1298. is that

  1299. the mystery

  1300. revealed

  1301. is stunningly

  1302. anticlimactic.

  1303. That is,

  1304. his primary

  1305. defense against

  1306. the position

  1307. that I hold

  1308. is that

  1309. it's stunningly

  1310. anticlimactic.

  1311. And I

  1312. just don't

  1313. find that

  1314. what does

  1315. or doesn't

  1316. make for a

  1317. good story

  1318. from our

  1319. perspective

  1320. to be a

  1321. very reliable

  1322. hermeneutic.

  1323. But I

  1324. digress.

  1325. This is a

  1326. commonly held

  1327. view.

  1328. There's going

  1329. to be a

  1330. dramatic

  1331. future

  1332. salvation

  1333. for ethnic

  1334. Jews.

  1335. And hear

  1336. me very

  1337. carefully.

  1338. I am on

  1339. board with

  1340. it if this

  1341. is what

  1342. Paul means

  1343. by that.

  1344. I'm a

  1345. fan if

  1346. that is

  1347. what Paul

  1348. means.

  1349. But I

  1350. don't think

  1351. it's what

  1352. he means,

  1353. and I'm

  1354. just briefly

  1355. going to

  1356. show you

  1357. why.

  1358. Number

  1359. four,

  1360. fourth

  1361. position,

  1362. the one

  1363. I hold,

  1364. all Israel

  1365. means a

  1366. remnant

  1367. of ethnic

  1368. Jews

  1369. throughout

  1370. history.

  1371. without

  1372. placing

  1373. any

  1374. particular

  1375. number

  1376. on

  1377. what

  1378. that

  1379. may

  1380. mean.

  1381. And I

  1382. hold this

  1383. position

  1384. because I

  1385. find that

  1386. this position

  1387. squares what

  1388. Paul has

  1389. been teaching

  1390. about divine

  1391. election and

  1392. a Jewish

  1393. remnant from

  1394. the beginning

  1395. of chapter

  1396. nine.

  1397. So I know

  1398. if you're a

  1399. guest this

  1400. morning and

  1401. you're here

  1402. sitting in the

  1403. middle of this,

  1404. you don't know

  1405. what I'm

  1406. talking about.

  1407. I encourage you

  1408. to go back

  1409. and listen.

  1410. If you've

  1411. been here,

  1412. you know

  1413. this is what

  1414. we have

  1415. been talking

  1416. about from

  1417. the beginning

  1418. of chapter

  1419. nine.

  1420. I do not

  1421. find this

  1422. view to be

  1423. at all

  1424. pessimistic

  1425. or

  1426. anticlimactic

  1427. when understood

  1428. in the light

  1429. of our

  1430. severe rebellion

  1431. and God's

  1432. immeasurable

  1433. grace

  1434. and mercy.

  1435. I think

  1436. that we

  1437. have all

  1438. that Paul

  1439. has taught

  1440. from the

  1441. beginning

  1442. of this

  1443. letter

  1444. in our

  1445. minds

  1446. if we

  1447. find ourselves

  1448. in the

  1449. end of

  1450. chapter

  1451. one and

  1452. in chapter

  1453. two,

  1454. and in

  1455. chapter

  1456. three,

  1457. as we

  1458. should,

  1459. rebels

  1460. against a

  1461. good,

  1462. kind,

  1463. loving

  1464. king,

  1465. having

  1466. rejected

  1467. his

  1468. rule

  1469. in our

  1470. lives.

  1471. We

  1472. deserve

  1473. eternal

  1474. damnation.

  1475. We should

  1476. be very

  1477. aware of

  1478. our

  1479. spiritual

  1480. unworthiness.

  1481. If we

  1482. have our

  1483. minds

  1484. there,

  1485. then we

  1486. will be

  1487. absolutely

  1488. astounded

  1489. that God

  1490. saves

  1491. at all.

  1492. That he

  1493. saves our

  1494. rebellious

  1495. souls and

  1496. that he

  1497. has and

  1498. will

  1499. save the

  1500. rebellious

  1501. souls of

  1502. others,

  1503. both Jews

  1504. and Gentiles.

  1505. So it's

  1506. not at all

  1507. pessimistic to

  1508. read this and

  1509. just say,

  1510. I think Paul's

  1511. just saying

  1512. that God's

  1513. going to save

  1514. all those

  1515. Gentiles he

  1516. intends to

  1517. save and

  1518. God's going

  1519. to save

  1520. all those

  1521. Jews that

  1522. he intends

  1523. to save

  1524. because nobody

  1525. deserves it.

  1526. If you

  1527. deserve

  1528. anything at

  1529. all,

  1530. it's a

  1531. little

  1532. miniature

  1533. catechism in

  1534. our house

  1535. with our

  1536. boys.

  1537. Boys,

  1538. what do you

  1539. deserve?

  1540. When they

  1541. act like

  1542. they deserve

  1543. something,

  1544. they act

  1545. entitled,

  1546. what do you

  1547. deserve?

  1548. And they've

  1549. been taught

  1550. to say,

  1551. death and

  1552. health.

  1553. If we

  1554. have that

  1555. mind,

  1556. which is

  1557. true,

  1558. it's what I

  1559. deserve for

  1560. my rebellion

  1561. against God.

  1562. But when I'm

  1563. dismissed from

  1564. that punishment,

  1565. when I'm let

  1566. out of the

  1567. courtroom,

  1568. right,

  1569. from death

  1570. to life,

  1571. I don't think

  1572. I'm going to

  1573. yell things

  1574. over my

  1575. shoulder.

  1576. But that's

  1577. not fair.

  1578. How dare

  1579. you?

  1580. I would

  1581. just leave

  1582. with gratitude

  1583. because I

  1584. know what I

  1585. deserved and

  1586. I know what

  1587. I've been

  1588. granted,

  1589. salvation in

  1590. Christ.

  1591. What an

  1592. incredible thing

  1593. that God

  1594. saves at

  1595. all,

  1596. that he

  1597. saves people

  1598. of all

  1599. kinds,

  1600. right,

  1601. both Jew

  1602. and Gentile.

  1603. It's the way

  1604. we should read

  1605. this chapter.

  1606. Now,

  1607. as I said,

  1608. you are most

  1609. welcome to

  1610. disagree with

  1611. me.

  1612. Please come

  1613. tell me.

  1614. It won't hurt

  1615. my feelings.

  1616. I'm sure that

  1617. it hasn't been

  1618. the first and

  1619. won't be the

  1620. last time that

  1621. you disagree

  1622. with me.

  1623. But let us

  1624. not miss that

  1625. we have failed

  1626. to understand

  1627. this text if

  1628. we become

  1629. arrogant toward

  1630. ethnic Jews,

  1631. if we stop

  1632. caring that the

  1633. gospel we preach

  1634. to them,

  1635. and if we are

  1636. not moved

  1637. to praise.

  1638. Let's spend

  1639. the rest of

  1640. our time

  1641. together on

  1642. the praise at

  1643. the end of

  1644. chapter 11.

  1645. Beloved,

  1646. good theology

  1647. rightly held,

  1648. it's possible

  1649. to believe the

  1650. right thing

  1651. and to believe

  1652. it wrongly

  1653. in the way

  1654. that you hold

  1655. it.

  1656. Good theology

  1657. drives doxology.

  1658. If you're

  1659. believing things

  1660. that the Bible

  1661. teaches rightly,

  1662. it should lead

  1663. you to praise.

  1664. And that's

  1665. where Paul goes.

  1666. I just imagine

  1667. him bursting into

  1668. this kind of

  1669. praise of God.

  1670. He hasn't

  1671. written an

  1672. outline and

  1673. thought,

  1674. boy, at the

  1675. end of chapter

  1676. 11, I must

  1677. say something

  1678. glorious.

  1679. I'm about to

  1680. transition to

  1681. the practical

  1682. stuff, so I

  1683. better really

  1684. have a reason

  1685. to slip an

  1686. amen in there.

  1687. I think he's

  1688. just moved as

  1689. he's considering

  1690. this and

  1691. thinking about

  1692. this.

  1693. And he says,

  1694. I'm going to

  1695. read it for you

  1696. again,

  1697. O the depth

  1698. of the riches

  1699. and wisdom

  1700. and knowledge

  1701. of God.

  1702. How unsearchable

  1703. are his judgments

  1704. and how inscrutable

  1705. his ways.

  1706. For who has

  1707. known the mind

  1708. of the Lord

  1709. or who has

  1710. been his

  1711. counselor?

  1712. Or who has

  1713. given a gift

  1714. to him that

  1715. he might be

  1716. repaid?

  1717. For from

  1718. him and

  1719. through him

  1720. and to him

  1721. are all

  1722. things.

  1723. To him

  1724. be glory

  1725. forever.

  1726. An interjection

  1727. of strong

  1728. emotion.

  1729. That O is

  1730. there in the

  1731. original language.

  1732. He's moved.

  1733. It's a guttural

  1734. thing that he

  1735. is beginning

  1736. to do here.

  1737. Oh, the

  1738. depth of

  1739. the riches

  1740. and wisdom

  1741. and knowledge

  1742. of God.

  1743. Immeasurable

  1744. weight that

  1745. he's trying to

  1746. express here.

  1747. How unsearchable

  1748. are his

  1749. judgments.

  1750. How inscrutable

  1751. or impossible

  1752. to understand

  1753. are his

  1754. ways.

  1755. The mystery

  1756. of how it

  1757. is that God

  1758. is saving a

  1759. people for

  1760. his glory

  1761. is what Paul

  1762. is expressing

  1763. here.

  1764. For who has

  1765. known the

  1766. mind of the

  1767. Lord or who

  1768. has been

  1769. his counselor?

  1770. There's a

  1771. citation from

  1772. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1773. 40 and

  1774. verse 13.

  1775. God's

  1776. thoughts,

  1777. not our

  1778. thoughts.

  1779. I have

  1780. often tried to

  1781. work out some

  1782. of the

  1783. tensions that

  1784. are presented

  1785. in the

  1786. Bible.

  1787. Been frustrated

  1788. by them,

  1789. thinking somehow

  1790. that I ought

  1791. to be able

  1792. to do it.

  1793. And I've

  1794. decided rather

  1795. just to

  1796. trust what

  1797. the Bible

  1798. teaches.

  1799. perhaps a full

  1800. understanding of

  1801. it would split

  1802. my head

  1803. open.

  1804. And God

  1805. in his

  1806. infinite wisdom

  1807. recognizes my

  1808. finite frailty

  1809. and just

  1810. teaches me

  1811. what I

  1812. need

  1813. to know.

  1814. He is

  1815. sovereign over

  1816. my salvation.

  1817. I am

  1818. responsible

  1819. for my

  1820. belief.

  1821. I know,

  1822. I know

  1823. that's

  1824. attention.

  1825. It's one I

  1826. think that

  1827. we're meant

  1828. to hold.

  1829. A couple

  1830. chapters later

  1831. in the book

  1832. of Isaiah

    Isaiah 55:8

  1833. chapter 55

  1834. verse 8

  1835. and 9

  1836. God there

  1837. says,

  1838. not Paul,

  1839. God says,

  1840. for my

  1841. thoughts are

  1842. not your

  1843. thoughts,

  1844. neither are

  1845. your ways

  1846. my ways.

  1847. For as the

  1848. heavens are

  1849. higher than

  1850. the earth,

  1851. so are my

  1852. ways higher

  1853. than your

  1854. ways,

  1855. and my

  1856. thoughts

  1857. than your

  1858. thoughts.

  1859. infinitely,

  1860. heavens higher

  1861. than the

  1862. earth.

  1863. And so

  1864. it's okay

  1865. to not

  1866. understand

  1867. everything

  1868. that's in

  1869. the Bible.

  1870. It's okay

  1871. to ask

  1872. questions.

  1873. I encourage

  1874. the asking

  1875. of questions,

  1876. but we

  1877. need to

  1878. ask

  1879. questions

  1880. rightly.

  1881. We need

  1882. to go

  1883. to the

  1884. text

  1885. humbly,

  1886. right?

  1887. Be

  1888. underneath

  1889. it,

  1890. submit

  1891. ourselves

  1892. to it,

  1893. recognize

  1894. that it's

  1895. authored

  1896. by God

  1897. himself.

  1898. That he's

  1899. chosen to

  1900. reveal himself

  1901. to us

  1902. in this

  1903. way.

  1904. In chapter

  1905. 11,

  1906. I've joked

  1907. with some

  1908. of you

  1909. that I

  1910. kind of

  1911. wish Paul

  1912. had an

  1913. editor for

  1914. chapter 11

  1915. and would

  1916. have condensed

  1917. it and

  1918. simplified it

  1919. for us.

  1920. I think

  1921. we're meant

  1922. to see it

  1923. as a

  1924. mystery.

  1925. I think

  1926. we're meant

  1927. to go,

  1928. man,

  1929. God's saving

  1930. purpose is

  1931. difficult to

  1932. understand.

  1933. And then

  1934. we're meant

  1935. to be moved

  1936. to praise

  1937. in this

  1938. way.

  1939. Paul

  1940. rebukes

  1941. the kind

  1942. of questioning

  1943. that doesn't

  1944. approach the

  1945. Bible that

  1946. way.

  1947. who are

  1948. you,

  1949. oh man,

  1950. to answer

  1951. back to

  1952. God,

  1953. he says in

  1954. chapter 9

  1955. and verse

  1956. 20.

  1957. It's as if

  1958. he's saying,

  1959. who are you

  1960. to stand in

  1961. judgment over

  1962. what God

  1963. has said?

  1964. Will what is

  1965. molded say

  1966. to its

  1967. molder?

  1968. why have you

  1969. made me

  1970. like this?

  1971. A rhetorical

  1972. mocking

  1973. question.

  1974. We ought

  1975. not approach

  1976. God with

  1977. questions in

  1978. that manner.

  1979. But we

  1980. can ask

  1981. the questions

  1982. and we

  1983. can go to

  1984. the text

  1985. and we

  1986. can have

  1987. good

  1988. conversation

  1989. about what

  1990. God has

  1991. said about

  1992. himself

  1993. and his

  1994. word.

  1995. Who has

  1996. known the

  1997. mind of

  1998. the Lord

  1999. or who

  2000. has been

  2001. his

  2002. counselor?

  2003. No one.

  2004. No one.

  2005. Or who

  2006. has given

  2007. a gift

  2008. to him

  2009. that he

  2010. might be

  2011. repaid?

  2012. God owes

  2013. us nothing.

  2014. He's citing

  2015. our Job

  2016. 40 and

  2017. verse 11.

  2018. For from

  2019. him and

  2020. through him

  2021. and to

  2022. him are

  2023. all things.

  2024. God is

  2025. the author,

  2026. he is the

  2027. agent,

  2028. and he

  2029. is the

  2030. aim.

  2031. Everything

  2032. exists for

  2033. his

  2034. sake.

  2035. That

  2036. includes

  2037. you

  2038. and I

  2039. and that

  2040. is

  2041. good.

  2042. And notice

  2043. what Paul

  2044. does right

  2045. after that.

  2046. To him

  2047. be glory,

  2048. magnification,

  2049. that God

  2050. will be known

  2051. for who he

  2052. is.

  2053. To him

  2054. be glory

  2055. forever.

  2056. Amen.

  2057. I love

  2058. from the

  2059. beginning,

  2060. verse 8,

  2061. chapter 8,

  2062. verse 28,

  2063. to the end

  2064. of this

  2065. chapter.

  2066. If you're

  2067. wrestling with

  2068. any of

  2069. this,

  2070. read it

  2071. from there,

  2072. chapter 8,

  2073. verse 28,

  2074. through the

  2075. end of

  2076. chapter 11.

  2077. Paul,

  2078. not fully

  2079. comprehending

  2080. everything,

  2081. is moved to

  2082. this kind of

  2083. praise.

  2084. God,

  2085. this is a

  2086. mystery.

  2087. He trusts

  2088. the Lord,

  2089. he defends

  2090. the Lord,

  2091. and he's

  2092. moved to

  2093. praise in

  2094. this way.

  2095. To him

  2096. be glory

  2097. forever.

  2098. Amen.

  2099. Amen.

  2100. It's a

  2101. little bit

  2102. of application.

  2103. It's very

  2104. similar to

  2105. last week.

  2106. For those

  2107. of us who

  2108. are in

  2109. Christ,

  2110. who have

  2111. already

  2112. placed

  2113. saving

  2114. faith in

  2115. him,

  2116. we should

  2117. be amazed

  2118. at God's

  2119. sovereign plan

  2120. of salvation.

  2121. We should

  2122. just be

  2123. absolutely

  2124. astounded

  2125. by it.

  2126. We should

  2127. be amazed

  2128. that we

  2129. are any

  2130. part of

  2131. it.

  2132. number

  2133. two,

  2134. we should

  2135. be humble

  2136. because our

  2137. salvation

  2138. is by

  2139. grace alone,

  2140. through faith

  2141. alone,

  2142. in the

  2143. person and

  2144. work of

  2145. Jesus Christ

  2146. alone.

  2147. And this

  2148. should give

  2149. us a

  2150. great

  2151. confidence

  2152. before our

  2153. God.

  2154. Daniel

  2155. Caudry,

  2156. 17th

  2157. century

  2158. pastor said,

  2159. if all

  2160. the graces

  2161. of God

  2162. are precious

  2163. pearls,

  2164. then humility

  2165. is the

  2166. string that

  2167. ties them

  2168. all together.

  2169. And thirdly,

  2170. we should

  2171. plead God's

  2172. saving grace

  2173. for all

  2174. peoples.

  2175. If we

  2176. understand that

  2177. God has a

  2178. sovereign plan

  2179. of salvation

  2180. for the

  2181. world,

  2182. if we're

  2183. amazed by it

  2184. as we

  2185. should be,

  2186. then we

  2187. should desire

  2188. to be a

  2189. people who

  2190. are sent,

  2191. who preach

  2192. that good

  2193. news to

  2194. everyone.

  2195. Whether it's

  2196. your neighbor

  2197. and co-worker

  2198. in Dahlonega,

  2199. your classmate,

  2200. or God sends

  2201. you to the

  2202. very end

  2203. of the

  2204. earth.

  2205. For those

  2206. this morning

  2207. who are

  2208. not in

  2209. Christ,

  2210. your rejection

  2211. of the

  2212. saving work

  2213. of Jesus

  2214. Christ is

  2215. keeping you

  2216. from the

  2217. goodness

  2218. of God.

  2219. Repent of

  2220. your sin

  2221. and put your

  2222. faith in

  2223. him for

  2224. the salvation

  2225. of your

  2226. soul.

  2227. He lived

  2228. the life

  2229. God requires

  2230. of you and

  2231. died the

  2232. death that

  2233. you deserve.

  2234. Jesus will

  2235. grant you

  2236. his perfection

  2237. and he

  2238. took your

  2239. punishment

  2240. if you

  2241. will just

  2242. believe that

  2243. his work

  2244. was effectual

  2245. for you.

  2246. Just turn

  2247. from your

  2248. sin and

  2249. flee to

  2250. Christ.

  2251. Let's pray

  2252. together.

  2253. for you.
