  1. Good morning. This morning's sermon will be different than usual. If you are a guest with us this morning, I want you to know that we normally preach verse by verse expositions through a book, the regular practice of our church.

  2. We are presently working our way through Paul's letter to the Romans, where we just concluded chapter 11.

  3. This morning, I want us to think together, though, about Christian unity as we have some news to announce to our membership, which I will share with you in just a bit.

  4. So a little break from Romans for an important matter. We will look at a number of texts today.

  5. So, and again, I don't love preaching. It doesn't start with a text and isn't text driven.

  6. But from time to time, it's important and necessary for us to do otherwise.

  7. But I'd like for us to begin in Romans chapter 15. So if you could join me there. Romans chapter 15, verses 5 and 6.

Romans 15 chapter mention Romans 15:5

  8. We will exposit this text at length. So this is not your Romans 15, 5 and 6 sermon.

  9. We read,

  10. It's the very reason we get up in the morning that Christ would be known in our lives, amongst our families, our co-workers, and to the very ends of the earth.

  11. We want the praise of Christ to be sung amongst all peoples.

  12. And so we go to all the various places that God sends us.

  13. And Paul here is saying he hopes that the Roman Christ followers and you and I would be given grace for Christian unity so that the Lord Jesus Christ would receive glory.

  14. Not the only way he receives glory, but Paul here says that it is a way, and I would contend an important way, that he receives glory.

  15. But we don't always agree, do we?

  16. Sometimes we have personal conflict, and the Bible is replete with commands and instruction for how we are to set aside our preferences, bear with one another, with compassion, and reconcile.

  17. I think this is a church that does that very well.

  18. Sometimes we have convictional differences.

  19. Faithful Christians haven't always seen eye to eye on everything.

  20. If you're paying attention at all, you're very aware of this.

  21. Differences in understanding about what the Bible teaches.

  22. This has always been true.

  23. It's been an ancient part of the church to find disagreement amongst one another.

  24. It is true amongst us.

  25. We don't all see eye to eye on everything.

  26. We don't all agree on all things, and this creates some genuine challenges for unity.

  27. It would be much easier if we agreed on everything all the time, but this is also impossible.

  28. Our disagreements certainly create the need to ask that God would be gracious to us,

  29. that we might live in the type of harmony that exalts Jesus Christ.

  30. So, how are we to be agreeable while disagreeing?

  31. How do we disagree with charity, an old word for love, for one another?

  32. And we do so by employing, employing well, the practice of theological triage.

  33. I know that many of you may already be tired of me talking about this, but I think it's really important,

  34. so I'm just going to keep doing so.

  35. Triage is the process of assigning urgency or importance to a matter.

  36. If a bus that is full of people were in an accident, and that number was brought into an emergency room,

  37. those patients would be ranked for treatment from most severe need to least severe need.

  38. This is emergency room triage.

  39. This can, and I argue, should also be done theologically.

  40. If you believe that the Bible teaches a doctrine,

  41. and a well-meaning Christian brother or sister disagrees with your view,

  42. what are you to do?

  43. How important, or perhaps unimportant, is said disagreement?

  44. Theological triage helps us to determine this.

  45. We need to be able to think in this way and to do so regularly and quickly.

  46. Now, at this point, I want to be clear.

  47. The term theological triage was coined, as far as I can tell, by Al Mohler,

  48. the current president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

  49. So it's a recent term.

  50. However, the concept can be seen historically in the creation of confessions and creeds,

  51. Christians carefully pinning doctrinal standards for the sake of agreement,

  52. and, more importantly, as I will show you this morning in the Bible.

  53. So, as a modern practice under that term,

  54. it's also a very ancient practice that starts in the Scripture itself.

  55. So I want to lay out for you this idea of theological triage.

  56. Again, some of you are familiar with it, but some of you may not be.

  57. Theological triage divides doctrinal issues into four different categories.

  58. They're not creatively named.

  59. They're primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, or first, second, third, and fourth order doctrines.

  60. To explain them to you, I'm going to take them out of order

  61. because I think it helps our understanding of them.

  62. So the first I want to address is the fourth,

  63. the fourth order doctrinal category or quaternary doctrines.

  64. And these are things that are just unimportant.

  65. Have a view and an opinion, but it really doesn't matter.

  66. And we don't come up with these very often because we're sensible people

  67. and we have a lot going on,

  68. and so we don't tend to muse about things like this.

  69. So my common example for this one is their life on other planets.

  70. And I've been asked this question by typically young men

  71. because they have too much time on their hands.

  72. And I'll tell you that my answer to them is,

  73. I don't know and I don't care.

  74. It's unimportant.

  75. Interesting to think about, but it doesn't really matter.

  76. The second I want to talk about is third order doctrine

  77. or tertiary doctrine.

  78. These are things that are not unimportant.

  79. They are, in fact, important,

  80. but they're important for the individual.

  81. There's commands in the Bible that we have to have some mind toward.

  82. What do we think this teaches

  83. and how am I going to practice it in my life?

  84. And you may find that you could differ from someone else

  85. that you have regular fellowship with,

  86. and that be okay.

  87. I think this area of our lives is a place in which we serve each other so well

  88. because we ought to hold it importantly

  89. and perhaps make a case to other Christians.

  90. How do we grow in maturity

  91. if we assume everything we believe the Bible teaches on the surface is right?

  92. Well, no.

  93. There's things that we grow in and we need to be taught in

  94. and we need to be pressing one another on.

  95. So some examples of people who disagree about alcohol as an example.

  96. There are people who are teetoters,

  97. think we should never ever drink alcohol,

  98. and there are people who think it's okay in moderation to drink alcohol.

  99. What kind of TV or movies you might consume?

  100. There are some clear, off-limit types of things to consume,

  101. but some people may have a problem with a particular TV show

  102. and somebody else may not have a problem with that show.

  103. Schooling choices is a hot one these days.

  104. Is it okay to send your children to public school

  105. or off to private or homeschool?

  106. These are important conversations for us to be having.

  107. Our family, homeschools.

  108. I would give you a theological foundation for why we do that.

  109. I would also give you lots of practical application.

  110. The way my wife and I think,

  111. it leads us to the conclusion that we ought to school our children at home.

  112. But you might see things differently,

  113. and this isn't a reason for me to put you in an unfaithful category.

  114. We're all growing and we're all learning

  115. and we're all doing the best we can.

  116. So, to find this in the scripture,

  117. you can turn back just a page to Romans chapter 14.

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  118. I just want to show you an example of it.

  119. There's a number of places that Paul speaks to this.

  120. But here you can see very clearly, beginning in verse 1,

  121. as for the one who is weak in faith,

  122. welcome him,

  123. but not to quarrel over opinions.

  124. Welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.

  125. One person believes he may eat anything,

  126. while the weak person eats only vegetables.

  127. This had to do with some Jewish customs.

  128. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains,

  129. and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats,

  130. for God has welcomed him.

  131. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?

  132. It is before his own master that he stands or falls,

  133. and he will be upheld,

  134. for the Lord is able to make him stand.

  135. One person esteems one day as better than another,

  136. while another esteems all days alike.

  137. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

  138. The one who observes the day,

  139. observes it in honor of the Lord.

  140. The one who eats,

  141. eats in honor of the Lord,

  142. since he gives thanks to God.

  143. While the one who abstains,

  144. abstains in honor of the Lord,

  145. and gives thanks to God.

  146. So, different cultural issues,

  147. when Paul is writing this,

  148. but all the same,

  149. tertiary types of things.

  150. Look at the way he's pressing at,

  151. you could go on to read the rest of chapter 14,

  152. and the beginning of 15.

  153. He's pressing at unity and harmony,

  154. right,

  155. for the sake of exalting Christ

  156. on these types of matters.

  157. So, those are tertiary types of doctrines.

  158. It seems to me that most of the conflict

  159. in local churches

  160. is when people take tertiary doctrines,

  161. and they promote them to secondary,

  162. or in many cases,

  163. into primary position.

  164. You can't possibly be a Christian

  165. if you don't see this thing

  166. the way I see this thing,

  167. and it's very dangerous,

  168. and we must be careful.

  169. So, let me go back up to the top

  170. and talk briefly about

  171. first order doctrines,

  172. or primary doctrines.

  173. These are the doctrines that are important

  174. for Christian unity.

  175. These are the doctrines

  176. that must be believed

  177. in order for somebody

  178. to be in Christ.

  179. These are the most important doctrines.

  180. When we talk about

  181. the clarity of Scripture,

  182. these are the doctrines

  183. that we would say

  184. the Bible is abundantly clear

  185. on these things.

  186. Examples,

  187. and there are a lot of examples here,

  188. but the deity of Jesus Christ.

  189. We cannot dismiss

  190. that Jesus Christ was, in fact, God,

  191. because if he wasn't God,

  192. then he was a liar and a lunatic,

  193. and we should reject

  194. everything that he said.

  195. He was, in fact,

  196. God incarnate.

  197. You must believe in the deity

  198. of Jesus Christ

  199. to be a believer.

  200. Justification by grace

  201. through faith

  202. in Christ alone.

  203. We've just walked

  204. through some difficult chapters

  205. in Paul's exhortation

  206. to the Romans.

  207. We believe as a church

  208. in sovereign election,

  209. but wherever you fall in this,

  210. in the minutia of this,

  211. you need to believe

  212. that we're saved by grace

  213. through faith in Christ.

  214. That's as far as

  215. the fisticuffs go for me.

  216. If you can affirm

  217. that you needed God

  218. to save you

  219. and that God will keep you

  220. to the end,

  221. then you and I

  222. can be great friends

  223. because we're in Christ.

  224. These first order things

  225. are the things

  226. that we're meant

  227. to fight for

  228. and to die for.

  229. This is the stuff

  230. that needs to stay central

  231. to what we do together.

  232. It's extremely important

  233. that we get this correct.

  234. It grieves me

  235. to watch Christians

  236. across our nation,

  237. mostly happening online,

  238. just be ripped apart

  239. by things that are secondary

  240. or tertiary

  241. when we agree

  242. on these first order

  243. and most important things.

  244. The enemy is so very pleased

  245. to find us infighting

  246. about less important stuff.

  247. Not remembering

  248. that we agree

  249. on the most important stuff.

  250. Those doctrines

  251. that push back

  252. the darkness

  253. of this world

  254. because souls are saved

  255. by the truth

  256. of the gospel

  257. of Jesus Christ.

  258. We need to help each other

  259. to do this.

  260. I inevitably

  261. am going to become

  262. distracted by something

  263. at some time

  264. and you are welcome

  265. to remind me

  266. about the stuff

  267. I'm supposed to be

  268. fighting and dying for.

  269. Don't let me fight

  270. and die for something

  271. that's not this important.

  272. This is the stuff

  273. that we live and die for.

  274. Very interestingly,

  275. during our members gathering

  276. earlier,

  277. Ernie actually read this text.

  278. I'm just going to read

  279. a little bit

  280. from the book of Jude.

  281. This is verse 3 and 4.

  282. There he says,

  283. Beloved,

  284. although I was very eager

  285. to write to you

  286. about our common salvation,

  287. I found it necessary

  288. to write appealing to you

  289. to contend for the faith

  290. that was once for all

  291. delivered to the saints.

  292. Right?

  293. I think this is what

  294. he's talking about.

  295. Primary doctrine.

  296. To contend for the faith

  297. that was once for all

  298. delivered to the saints.

  299. Here's why I think that.

  300. Verse 4 says,

  301. For certain people

  302. have crept in unnoticed

  303. who long ago

  304. were designated

  305. for this condemnation.

  306. Ungodly people

  307. who pervert the grace

  308. of our God

  309. into sensuality.

  310. They were cheap grace

  311. gospel people.

  312. They were saying,

  313. if you just claim

  314. the name of Christ,

  315. you can live however

  316. you want to

  317. and deny our only

  318. Master and Lord,

  319. Jesus Christ.

  320. Right?

  321. In this day,

  322. Jude is saying

  323. to these Christians,

  324. you have got

  325. to bring people

  326. back to justification

  327. by grace

  328. through faith

  329. in Christ

  330. and help them

  331. to see that

  332. that faith

  333. is a faith

  334. that will work.

  335. So,

  336. let's contend

  337. well together

  338. and I think

  339. we do this

  340. well.

  341. Primary

  342. doctrine.

  343. And then lastly,

  344. we have

  345. second order

  346. or secondary

  347. doctrine.

  348. And this is

  349. a little more

  350. difficult.

  351. I don't have

  352. a scripture

  353. reference for you.

  354. The one thing

  355. that comes to mind

  356. for me

  357. is the division

  358. between Barnabas

  359. and Paul

  360. when they had

  361. taken Mark

  362. with them

  363. who's a relative

  364. we think

  365. of Barnabas

  366. and Mark

  367. abandoned them

  368. because he was

  369. fearful.

  370. And when they

  371. got ready

  372. to take another

  373. journey,

  374. Paul refused

  375. to take Mark

  376. with them

  377. and Barnabas

  378. really wanted

  379. Mark to go

  380. and so there

  381. arose amongst

  382. them

  383. what Luke

  384. calls a sharp

  385. disagreement.

  386. And I take

  387. that to mean

  388. it wasn't

  389. friendly.

  390. It probably

  391. wasn't the

  392. way they

  393. should have

  394. disagreed.

  395. But all the

  396. same,

  397. they go

  398. separate ways.

  399. Barnabas

  400. takes John

  401. Mark with

  402. him.

  403. Paul goes

  404. another way.

  405. I think the

  406. thing we see

  407. that's wonderful,

  408. the redemptive

  409. thing,

  410. as we see

  411. later on,

  412. Paul is

  413. back in

  414. ministry with

  415. Barnabas

  416. as well as

  417. with Mark.

  418. There's been

  419. some restoration

  420. that has

  421. happened in

  422. that case.

  423. So there's

  424. an issue

  425. at hand

  426. that causes

  427. them still

  428. to be

  429. faithful to

  430. Christ.

  431. They still

  432. go on

  433. mission to

  434. spread the

  435. good news.

  436. First order

  437. primary doctrine

  438. stayed intact,

  439. but they went

  440. separate ways

  441. because they

  442. weren't sure

  443. how they

  444. should go.

  445. So maybe

  446. we see it

  447. there.

  448. This category

  449. are things

  450. that are

  451. important for

  452. church or

  453. perhaps ministry

  454. fellowship.

  455. Those things

  456. that we ought

  457. to agree

  458. on to

  459. remain

  460. institutionally

  461. together.

  462. These doctrines

  463. are going

  464. to define

  465. our practice

  466. and possibly

  467. define what

  468. we think

  469. is or

  470. isn't

  471. sin.

  472. It would be

  473. important to

  474. locate ourselves

  475. on certain

  476. issues.

  477. Some examples.

  478. What is a

  479. church's view

  480. on divorce

  481. and or

  482. remarriage?

  483. Why does

  484. that matter?

  485. Because we

  486. collectively,

  487. we're a

  488. congregational

  489. church, we

  490. believe in

  491. church

  492. discipline.

  493. Well, what

  494. are we going

  495. to call

  496. sin in

  497. these matters?

  498. It's

  499. important that

  500. we think

  501. about this

  502. together.

  503. Another example

  504. is whether or

  505. not a church

  506. believes in

  507. the regulative

  508. principle.

  509. that is to

  510. say, if we

  511. see something

  512. commanded in

  513. the Bible

  514. for us to

  515. do when

  516. we're gathered

  517. together, we

  518. should do

  519. that without

  520. fail.

  521. And if we

  522. don't see it

  523. commanded, then

  524. we shouldn't

  525. do that.

  526. So on a

  527. Sunday morning

  528. when our

  529. church gathers

  530. together, you

  531. will not see

  532. interpretive

  533. dancing.

  534. We don't

  535. find this in

  536. the scripture.

  537. Don't give me

  538. some example of

  539. David.

  540. We don't find

  541. it commanded

  542. to the church

  543. to do this

  544. thing in the

  545. Bible.

  546. And so we're

  547. not going to

  548. do that

  549. thing together

  550. when we

  551. gather.

  552. This is the

  553. regulative

  554. principle.

  555. We should

  556. agree on

  557. that.

  558. You may

  559. find that

  560. you don't

  561. and you

  562. may want

  563. to go to

  564. a church

  565. where

  566. interpretive

  567. dancing

  568. happens on

  569. a Sunday

  570. morning.

  571. As a little

  572. aside, Martin

  573. Lloyd-Jones,

  574. when he was

  575. hired, the

  576. church that he

  577. preached his

  578. life at, was

  579. known for

  580. their pageantry.

  581. They put on

  582. plays on

  583. Sunday mornings.

  584. And his

  585. first Sunday

  586. there, he

  587. dragged the

  588. pulpit, it

  589. was movable

  590. like this

  591. one, but

  592. he dragged

  593. the wooden

  594. pulpit across

  595. the stage.

  596. You can

  597. just imagine

  598. in the room

  599. hearing a

  600. wooden pulpit

  601. being dragged

  602. across a

  603. wooden stage.

  604. He dragged

  605. it to the

  606. center.

  607. He took

  608. out a

  609. hammer and

  610. nails out

  611. of his

  612. pocket and

  613. he hammered

  614. the pulpit

  615. to the center

  616. of the stage

  617. there in that

  618. church building.

  619. He was a

  620. regulative

  621. principle guy

  622. and he said

  623. the preaching

  624. of God's

  625. word is going

  626. to be central

  627. to what we

  628. do together

  629. as a church

  630. and they

  631. never put on

  632. another pageant

  633. there.

  634. Again, another

  635. good and

  636. classic example

  637. is a church's

  638. view on

  639. baptism.

  640. What do

  641. you believe

  642. but what do

  643. we believe

  644. together as

  645. it concerns

  646. baptism?

  647. We find

  648. denominational

  649. differences over

  650. this with

  651. brothers that

  652. we celebrate,

  653. rejoice with,

  654. we're so happy

  655. and thankful to

  656. be gospel

  657. partners with

  658. them but

  659. we are not

  660. serving in

  661. a church

  662. with them

  663. because we

  664. hold a

  665. different view

  666. on this

  667. issue.

  668. Which brings

  669. me to my

  670. aforementioned

  671. announcement.

  672. Ty Brunette

  673. is a faithful

  674. brother.

  675. He is in

  676. full agreement

  677. with the

  678. church on

  679. primary doctrine.

  680. He has been

  681. serving us

  682. well, although

  683. briefly, but

  684. well as an

  685. elder here.

  686. But he has

  687. come to find

  688. himself disagreeing

  689. with us on

  690. the secondary

  691. doctrine of

  692. baptism.

  693. Now he

  694. didn't go

  695. looking for a

  696. different conviction

  697. on it.

  698. He stumbled

  699. across it in

  700. his study and

  701. has become

  702. convinced of

  703. a different

  704. position.

  705. Now we,

  706. as a church

  707. in total, I

  708. mean, are

  709. credo-baptists

  710. which means that

  711. we believe that

  712. the only proper

  713. recipients of

  714. baptism are

  715. individuals who

  716. have made

  717. credible

  718. professions of

  719. faith in

  720. Christ.

  721. It's the

  722. careful work

  723. that we do

  724. as Baptists.

  725. We want to

  726. be able to,

  727. with the

  728. fallible

  729. confidence that

  730. we have, say

  731. yes, we

  732. believe that

  733. this person

  734. is in fact

  735. in the

  736. faith.

  737. They make

  738. a profession

  739. of that

  740. faith in

  741. being baptized.

  742. We affirm

  743. that in

  744. baptizing them.

  745. This is the

  746. credo-baptist

  747. position.

  748. And I want to

  749. be clear, it's

  750. done poorly

  751. in a lot of

  752. places, but we

  753. try to do it

  754. well in the

  755. life of our

  756. church.

  757. Ty has come

  758. to

  759. paedo-baptist

  760. convictions.

  761. Before I say

  762. anything further

  763. about paedo-baptism,

  764. I just want to

  765. say there's a

  766. lot of

  767. paedo-baptists

  768. that are

  769. terrible and

  770. heretical.

  771. Ty is not

  772. affiliating with

  773. any of that.

  774. So if

  775. paedo-baptist,

  776. infant-baptist

  777. pops into your

  778. head and you

  779. think immediately

  780. of baptismal

  781. regeneration,

  782. that's not

  783. Ty.

  784. If you think of

  785. the Catholics,

  786. that's not

  787. Ty.

  788. This is good,

  789. faithful,

  790. gospel-believing

  791. paedo-baptism

  792. that Ty is

  793. holding.

  794. And paedo-baptism

  795. means that he,

  796. along with many

  797. others,

  798. believe that

  799. baptism should

  800. be applied to

  801. individuals who

  802. have made

  803. credible professions

  804. of faith in

  805. Christ and

  806. also to their

  807. children.

  808. So you may

  809. know this as

  810. infant baptism.

  811. In our circle,

  812. most commonly,

  813. we see that

  814. Presbyterians

  815. practice this

  816. form of

  817. baptism.

  818. We have

  819. worked together

  820. over the past

  821. months to

  822. sort this

  823. disagreement

  824. through.

  825. We're not

  826. going to get

  827. into the weeds

  828. this morning

  829. of the

  830. difference in

  831. the views.

  832. I can tell

  833. you that it

  834. sharpened me.

  835. I hope that

  836. it served

  837. Ty through

  838. the process.

  839. This is the

  840. first time I've

  841. had to really

  842. engage the

  843. topic with a

  844. person who I

  845. love dearly

  846. sitting across

  847. from me,

  848. getting frustrated

  849. with them and

  850. then having to

  851. apologize immediately

  852. for being

  853. frustrated.

  854. with them.

  855. I told him in

  856. the process,

  857. I'm becoming

  858. more a Baptist

  859. because of this

  860. conversation.

  861. And he said,

  862. and you'll

  863. appreciate,

  864. amen.

  865. He said,

  866. good,

  867. good.

  868. I can assure

  869. you that Ty

  870. cares to honor

  871. the Lord as

  872. he seeks to

  873. be faithful to

  874. the Bible and

  875. his conscience

  876. concerning it.

  877. This is a

  878. Bible conviction

  879. that he's come

  880. to.

  881. I am so proud

  882. of the way that

  883. he has handled

  884. himself as he

  885. has disagreed.

  886. He's just at

  887. every step

  888. been so careful,

  889. so generous

  890. and kind.

  891. He hasn't

  892. picked it up as

  893. an agenda and

  894. gone raging

  895. around the

  896. church trying to

  897. convince other

  898. people of it.

  899. He started with

  900. me.

  901. He spoke with

  902. our elders.

  903. He's just done

  904. a great job of

  905. explaining where

  906. he is on his

  907. position.

  908. There is,

  909. by God's

  910. great grace,

  911. harmony amongst

  912. your church's

  913. leadership.

  914. I'm glad for

  915. that.

  916. I'm so thankful

  917. that God has

  918. worked in us.

  919. I think,

  920. thinking clearly,

  921. how should we

  922. feel about this?

  923. How should we

  924. act according

  925. to it?

  926. And I hope we'll

  927. set an example

  928. for you all.

  929. That said,

  930. Ty has stepped

  931. down from his

  932. role as an

  933. elder.

  934. Ty is

  935. confessional as

  936. we are.

  937. He believes that

  938. it's important for

  939. us to say what we

  940. believe the Bible

  941. says, and he

  942. sees that we

  943. ought to be in

  944. agreement on this

  945. particular matter.

  946. It's secondary.

  947. It's not tertiary.

  948. It's a secondary

  949. matter.

  950. So he has stepped

  951. down as an elder.

  952. He's going to be

  953. seeking what the

  954. Lord has for him

  955. next.

  956. He's going to

  957. remain employed

  958. with us as a

  959. pastoral assistant

  960. through the end

  961. of July, and he's

  962. looking for what

  963. he'll do after

  964. that.

  965. And so, while

  966. rightly we'll be

  967. sad to say

  968. goodbye to him,

  969. and Cheyenne

  970. and to their

  971. children, we

  972. don't have to be

  973. sad all at once.

  974. So, this is not

  975. your last day to

  976. see the brunettes.

  977. We can say

  978. goodbye over a

  979. bit of time, and

  980. we'll be sure to

  981. do so well before

  982. they part from

  983. us.

  984. So, see in this

  985. example how

  986. theological

  987. triage serves

  988. us, right?

  989. Ty is not

  990. apostate, right?

  991. Ty is not a

  992. Christian just

  993. because he

  994. doesn't agree

  995. with us on

  996. baptism.

  997. He's a

  998. Christian brother,

  999. and we need

  1000. to have no

  1001. doubt of

  1002. this.

  1003. Ty does, though,

  1004. find himself

  1005. disagreeing in a

  1006. matter that

  1007. causes him and

  1008. his family to

  1009. need to seek

  1010. fellowship elsewhere

  1011. where their

  1012. conscience can be

  1013. clear, where they

  1014. can practice the

  1015. way they believe

  1016. God would have

  1017. them practice,

  1018. right?

  1019. We may think it

  1020. irregular for them

  1021. to do that, but

  1022. they don't, and

  1023. so that's okay that

  1024. they would find

  1025. themselves in a

  1026. Presbyterian

  1027. context.

  1028. It is okay for

  1029. us not to see

  1030. eye to eye on

  1031. this matter and

  1032. therefore to

  1033. maintain unity.

  1034. So, thinking

  1035. about this, right,

  1036. where do we

  1037. place this?

  1038. And here we

  1039. find it's

  1040. actionable.

  1041. Most of our

  1042. disagreements

  1043. within a church

  1044. are in that

  1045. tertiary category

  1046. and require no

  1047. action at all.

  1048. Certainly, if we

  1049. have primary

  1050. disagreements,

  1051. then we're

  1052. going to go to

  1053. the mattresses

  1054. over that,

  1055. right?

  1056. So, let me

  1057. conclude with

  1058. some encouragements

  1059. for you.

  1060. I just want to

  1061. encourage you,

  1062. love on Ty and

  1063. Cheyenne to the

  1064. max over these

  1065. next three months.

  1066. It's really

  1067. tempting, I find

  1068. this in myself,

  1069. to withdraw from

  1070. people we will

  1071. say farewell to.

  1072. I love their

  1073. children and it's

  1074. tempting to not

  1075. love their kids so

  1076. much, right?

  1077. To not get all

  1078. the hugs that I

  1079. possibly can from

  1080. them.

  1081. But let's not do

  1082. this, right?

  1083. Let's push back

  1084. against that

  1085. temptation for

  1086. their good and

  1087. for ours, right?

  1088. Let's wring every

  1089. bit of wonderful

1090. we can out of it

  1091. over the next

  1092. three months.

  1093. Additionally, let's

  1094. join in praying for

  1095. wisdom for the

  1096. brunettes as they

  1097. discern their next

  1098. steps.

  1099. There's not a

  1100. clear and obvious

  1101. place at this

  1102. moment for them

  1103. and so they need

  1104. to be careful.

  1105. We want to help

  1106. them in that

  1107. process to send

  1108. them well to

  1109. wherever it is the

  1110. Lord may be

  1111. calling them to

  1112. go.

  1113. So that's the

  1114. first encouragement

  1115. to you.

  1116. Secondly, wrestle

  1117. with varied views

  1118. on baptism.

  1119. I want you to

  1120. hear me say that.

  1121. I'm a committed

  1122. credo-baptist,

  1123. right?

  1124. We're not

  1125. Baptists because

  1126. of denominational

  1127. affiliation because

  1128. it's the kind of

  1129. church I grew up

  1130. in.

  1131. I'm Baptist by

  1132. conviction.

  1133. As a church,

  1134. it's my

  1135. understanding that

  1136. we're Baptist by

  1137. conviction, but I

  1138. want to encourage

  1139. you to wrestle

  1140. with it.

  1141. You need to

  1142. know what you

  1143. believe on the

  1144. matter.

  1145. Just don't go

  1146. along to get

  1147. along, but

  1148. understand the

  1149. doctrines.

  1150. It's important to

  1151. think about these

  1152. things.

  1153. Now to help you

  1154. with this, I'm

  1155. going to hold a

  1156. class that each

  1157. you see them, how

  1158. they're arrived at

  1159. from the scripture.

  1160. So we would have

  1161. done it sooner than

  1162. that, but I didn't

1163. want to do it on

  1164. Mother's Day and I

1165. wasn't ready to do it

  1166. today.

  1167. So it's going to

  1168. be on May 19th.

1169. So join me if you

  1170. will.

  1171. I really encourage

  1172. that.

  1173. At least somebody

  1174. from your family

  1175. with your Bible

  1176. open and we'll

  1177. consider it together.

  1178. I've got all kinds

  1179. of plans for a

  1180. whiteboard.

  1181. Just be ready for

  1182. it.

  1183. I also want to

  1184. encourage you not

  1185. to bombard Ty.

1186. I know that he is

  1187. willing to explain

  1188. his position, but

  1189. consider that this

1190. may not be the best

  1191. way for him to

  1192. spend his last three

  1193. months with us,

  1194. taking meeting

  1195. after meeting

  1196. after meeting to

  1197. sit down and

  1198. explain paedo

  1199. baptism to you.

  1200. Maybe hang on.

  1201. We'll have a class

  1202. and if you have

  1203. follow-up questions,

  1204. you're welcome to

  1205. probably ask him,

  1206. not me.

  1207. I'm going to give

  1208. you all the

  1209. information I know

  1210. about it at that

  1211. class.

  1212. But yeah, maybe

  1213. just don't bombard

  1214. him with questions.

1215. Just love on him a

  1216. bunch and Cheyenne

  1217. as well.

  1218. Third encouragement,

  1219. think long and

  1220. deep about Christian

  1221. unity.

  1222. Seeing this as an

  1223. example for us to

  1224. grow as individuals

1225. and to grow as a

  1226. church.

  1227. How can you be

  1228. agreeable while

  1229. disagreeing?

  1230. How can we

  1231. collectively be

  1232. agreeable while

  1233. disagreeing?

  1234. Make theological

  1235. triage a part of

  1236. your regular

  1237. thinking process.

  1238. Whether you ever

  1239. call it theological

  1240. triage or not,

  1241. I don't care.

  1242. But that you're

  1243. thinking in your

  1244. mind, how important

  1245. is this particular

  1246. doctrine?

  1247. doctrine?

  1248. What doctrines are

  1249. of highest order?

  1250. What truths would

  1251. you be willing to

  1252. die for?

  1253. And are they in

  1254. fact worth dying

  1255. for?

  1256. And do you spend

  1257. the majority of

  1258. your time thinking

  1259. about trying to

  1260. sort out all the

  1261. little minutiae

  1262. particulars, right?

  1263. Bouncing around on

  1264. YouTube to see what

  1265. so-and-so says about

1266. such and such a thing.

  1267. Be sure that you're

  1268. standing on the

  1269. right hill at the

  1270. end.

  1271. Let me ask, have

  1272. you caused disunity

  1273. over beliefs that

  1274. should not have

  1275. caused disunity?

  1276. Whether in this

  1277. church or perhaps

  1278. another, perhaps one

  1279. that you have left

  1280. behind and maybe

  1281. you need to call

  1282. somebody up and

  1283. issue an apology

  1284. and look for

  1285. reconciliation because

  1286. you were ugly about

1287. a thing that did not

  1288. require it.

  1289. So those are some

  1290. encouragements to

  1291. you.

  1292. I pray that our

  1293. church will walk

  1294. this out well

  1295. because it matters.

  1296. The fact that we

  1297. are in harmony with

  1298. one another, even

  1299. as we disagree,

  1300. exalts the Lord

  1301. Jesus Christ.

  1302. Let's pray.
