  1. Well, good morning and happy Mother's Day.

  2. If you will please take out your copy of God's Word and join me in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. I find these two verses to be of great importance for the church of our day.

  5. In an age of post-modernity and moral relativism, we find ourselves particularly susceptible to the temptation of allowing our passions to lead the charge in directing our lives.

  6. To let emotions rule the day.

  7. If you have no truth, what is left?

  8. It's whatever you feel may be true.

  9. And this just should not be so amongst Christians.

  10. We are to be a distinct people set apart for the glory of Christ.

  11. And Paul, in part, tells us how this is to be in these two verses.

  12. So Romans 12, verse 1 and 2 is our text for today.

    Romans 12:1

  13. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  14. It was written for His glory and our good, and so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  15. Paul writes,

  16. And we will spend the bulk of our time and attention this morning drawing out the meaning of the phrase.

  17. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

  18. And we're going to move quick this morning because I have more notes than I normally do.

  19. But before we get to that phrase, we must take a look at the preceding words of Paul's exhortation.

  20. He begins at the beginning of chapter 12 with,

  21. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God.

  22. Verse 1 contains the conjunctive adjective, therefore.

  23. And these conjunctions in the Bible carry a great deal of weight and should be paid a special attention to.

  24. You could think of the phrase, for that reason, in the place of the word, therefore, which begs, for what reason?

  25. This little word, just three Greek letters in the original language,

  26. bridges everything that Paul has said in the first 11 chapters to everything he will say in the following five chapters.

  27. So, this, therefore, is packed full of meaning.

  28. The first 11 chapters of Romans is Paul's magnum opus of Christian theology.

  29. It is the most extensive and clearest defense of justification by grace alone, through faith alone,

  30. in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  31. We've been deriving that across the past months.

  32. It speaks to the Christ followers' adoption in Jesus and identification with Christ as our federal head.

  33. Paul tells us that we are no longer captives of the law, but captives of grace.

  34. He speaks of the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit who intercedes for us,

  35. leads us in holiness, and helps us in all our affliction.

  36. He gives us reason for patient hope as we stand in God's election,

  37. the certainty of coming glory,

  38. the confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of God,

  39. and total assurance in God's continued faithfulness.

  40. He then works out what all this means for missions.

  41. Condemnation, justification, adoption,

  42. soteriology, pneumatology, missiology.

  43. It is grand and all contained in this therefore,

  44. and all summarized by the phrase,

  45. by the mercies of God.

  46. Paul is making an appeal to his brothers,

  47. and he wants to root it in all that he has taught so far in this letter.

  48. Therefore, then, accordingly, consequently,

  49. these things being so,

  50. indicating that something follows from another thing necessarily.

  51. Because God has been so merciful to you,

  52. Paul says,

  53. I appeal to you, brothers.

  54. Paul's appeal is for those who have received the mercies of God,

  55. those who are adopted sons.

  56. And ladies, you want to be sons in Christ,

  57. receiving all the benefits of the Father.

  58. Adopted in Christ,

  59. as Paul is,

  60. those who are co-heirs with Jesus.

  61. For anything that Paul will go on to say to be of any benefit to you,

  62. you must ensure that you are counted in this number here called brothers.

  63. If you have yet to place saving faith in the personal work of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  64. turn from your sin and throw yourself on his mercies.

  65. Assuming that you are a brother,

  66. including you, ladies, moms, this morning.

  67. Paul moves from doctrine to practice,

  68. from theology to ethics,

  69. from foundation to application.

  70. And what is it that Paul urges us to do in light of the mercies of God?

  71. Two, present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  72. holy and acceptable to God,

  73. which is your spiritual worship.

  74. The word present in Greek is an active, aorist, imperative verb.

  75. It is the same word used in the Septuagint,

  76. which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament,

  77. to speak of the priestly duty of sacrifice,

  78. which Paul develops in the next phrase.

  79. This type of verb means that this presentation is a decisive,

  80. deliberate, and continuous surrender of our whole selves,

  81. over and over and over again.

  82. We are urged by Paul to present our bodies as a living sacrifice,

  83. not one that is slaughtered and laid on an altar,

  84. but one that lives devotedly for the aim of the glory of God.

  85. The word here translated bodies is used in the New Testament

  86. to speak of the physical body,

  87. but is more commonly used to speak of the whole self.

  88. So all of us, decisively, deliberately, and continuously,

  89. because of the mercies of God,

  90. are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice,

  91. give all of ourselves in devotion to God.

  92. Paul then qualifies the presenting of our whole selves

  93. as a living sacrifice with the word holy

  94. and the phrase acceptable to God.

  95. What kind of sacrifice are we to be?

  96. One that has been set apart for a particular purpose.

  97. One that has been declared without spot or blemish.

  98. But I suggest, as Paul transitions this letter from doctrine to practice,

  99. one that is also in the process of being made pure.

  100. Justification, Paul has argued, guarantees sanctification.

  101. Having been saved guarantees that we're going to be made perfect in very degree.

  102. And he is urging our part in this glorious work of God.

  103. So it is this sacrifice that is acceptable to God.

  104. One that has been washed and one that is being washed.

  105. Paul then says that this decisively, deliberately, and continuously offered whole self-sacrifice

  106. is your spiritual worship.

  107. The word translated spiritual is an interesting one.

  108. And a tricky one to assign a single English word to.

  109. I am using an English standard version of the Bible.

  110. Some translations, you may have one open in front of you today,

  111. render this word reasonable.

  112. And, on first glance, you may think that these English words run in contradiction to each other.

  113. Spiritual and reasonable.

  114. This Greek word is the word that we get our English word logic from.

  115. So reasonable or logical are fair words here, but still not perfect.

  116. The word sets itself in contrast to the material world.

  117. The Greek word sets itself in contrast to the material world.

  118. It is the rational immaterial that it is concerned with.

  119. But that would be a clunky translation, wouldn't it?

  120. This is your rational immaterial service.

  121. Which is why we get the word spiritual in the ESV and many other good translations.

  122. So, what are we to think of this word?

  123. First, let's praise God for the faithful work of good Bible translators

  124. and for Greek tools to dig around a little bit deeper on these words.

  125. Second, Paul is introducing this idea that he is going to flesh out for us in the following verse.

  126. And here it is.

  127. The transformative power of God for sacrificial living begins in the mind.

  128. Our faith is a mindful faith.

  129. There is one other place in the New Testament that this Greek word is used

  130. and rendered once again spiritual in the ESV.

  131. It's found in 1 Peter chapter 2 and verse 2.

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  132. There Peter writes,

  133. Like newborn infants long for the pure spiritual milk

  134. that by it you may grow up into salvation.

  135. What is the pure spiritual milk that Peter is talking about?

  136. The saving knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  137. So, it could have been translated like newborn infants long for the pure reasonable milk.

  138. Knowledgeable milk.

  139. Before we have received the practicality of verse 2,

  140. bear with me as I present a bit more proof

  141. that our faith is a mindful faith.

  142. Paul has much to say about this.

  143. I will show you three examples from four texts in rather rapid fashion.

  144. Are you ready?

  145. Hang on.

  146. If you turn back just a few pages to Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  147. I'll begin reading in verse 5.

  148. There Paul says,

  149. Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh.

  150. But those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  151. For to set the mind on the flesh is death,

  152. but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

  153. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God,

  154. for it does not submit to God's law.

  155. Indeed, it cannot.

  156. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  157. You, however, are not in the flesh,

  158. but in the Spirit.

  159. If, in fact, the Spirit of God dwells in you,

  160. anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ

  161. does not belong to Him.

  162. So you see the functional work of the Spirit in the life of the Christian,

  163. in part,

  164. is to take their mind

  165. to the things of God.

  166. The things of the Spirit are the things of God.

  167. The Word of God.

  168. Another text.

  169. Now this is Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  170. If you'd like to join me, feel free.

  171. If not, listen carefully.

  172. Beginning in verse 17.

  173. Therefore, do not be foolish,

  174. but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  175. And do not get drunk with wine,

  176. for that is debauchery,

  177. but be filled with the Spirit.

  178. Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

  179. singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,

  180. giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father

  181. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  182. submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  183. Now to show you this,

  184. I need to take you to a parallel passage to this one.

  185. And I read so much of that

  186. because I want you to see them as parallel passages.

  187. So that was Ephesians 5, 17-21.

  188. Now listen to Colossians 3, 12-17.

  189. And I'll point out why it matters in just a second.

  190. There, Paul writes,

  191. Put on then, as God's chosen ones,

  192. holy and beloved, compassionate hearts,

  193. kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

  194. bearing with one another,

  195. and if one has a complaint against another,

  196. forgiving each other,

  197. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  198. so you also must forgive.

  199. And above all these, put on love,

  200. which binds everything together in perfect harmony,

  201. and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

  202. to which indeed you were called in one body,

  203. and be thankful.

  204. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  205. teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  206. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

  207. with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  208. And whatever you do in word or deed,

  209. do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  210. giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

  211. You probably heard a lot of similar language throughout there.

  212. I hope that you heard,

  213. I'm going to draw your attention to two phrases

  214. just before this idea of teaching and admonishing one another

  215. in songs, hymns, spiritual songs.

  216. Right?

  217. In Ephesians, you see the phrase,

  218. be filled with the Spirit.

  219. In Colossians, you see the phrase,

  220. let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

  221. And so I think what Paul's communicating to us

  222. as you look at these passages,

  223. Romans chapter 8, Ephesians chapter 5,

Romans 8 chapter mention Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  224. Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  225. is that for those who are filled with the Spirit,

  226. those who are walking by the Spirit,

  227. who are setting our minds on the things of the Spirit,

  228. that means that the word of Christ is dwelling within us.

  229. We have a mindful faith.

  230. One final text, an example, very briefly,

  231. 2 Corinthians chapter 10 and verse 5.

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  232. There Paul says,

  233. we destroy arguments

  234. and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God

  235. and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

  236. Christ.

  237. Our faith is a mindful faith.

  238. And don't hear me saying

  239. that there's no place for emotion in our faith.

  240. What I'm saying is,

  241. it should be led mindfully.

  242. I do not have the time to prove

  243. what I'm about to say to you,

  244. but nonetheless,

  245. I think it important to say at this point,

  246. our earthly existence

  247. is a dichotomous existence.

  248. And this is probably not the best word

  249. for our existence,

  250. as it means branching out

  251. or in some cases set against.

  252. But the point is that we are made of two parts.

  253. We are two parts.

  254. We are bodies

  255. and we are souls.

  256. And better yet,

  257. we could say we are embodied souls.

  258. This is the state of your earthly existence.

  259. There is the part of us

  260. that is readily observable

  261. through plain vision

  262. or instrumentation

  263. like an x-ray

  264. or CT scan

  265. or microscope.

  266. And then there is the part of us

  267. that is not so readily observable

  268. like our affections,

  269. our sorrows,

  270. our thoughts.

  271. We are embodied souls.

  272. If you have trouble in this world

  273. and you certainly do and will,

  274. then those troubles fit within a Venn diagram

  275. of being either physical,

  276. which means you need physical relief,

  277. or spiritual,

  278. and often but not always

  279. some intersection between the two.

  280. Your spiritual issues

  281. need spiritual solutions

  282. which begin

  283. in the mind.

  284. John Owen,

  285. in his book

  286. Spiritual Mindedness,

  287. which I commend to you,

  288. a quote that's on the back of your bulletin

  289. said this,

  290. The mind is a leading faculty

  291. of the soul.

  292. When the mind fixes upon an object

  293. or course of action,

  294. the will and the affections

  295. follow suit.

  296. They are incapable

  297. of any other consideration.

  298. The mind's office

  299. is to guide,

  300. to direct,

  301. to choose,

  302. and to lead.

  303. End quote.

  304. So our faith

  305. is a mindful faith.

  306. It's not a stoic faith,

  307. but it is

  308. mindful.

  309. Beware of anybody

  310. that teaches you

  311. that Christianity

  312. is first and foremost

  313. an emotional endeavor.

  314. Now let's look at verse 2

  315. and because

  316. it's been a minute

  317. since we read it,

  318. let's read it

  319. once again.

  320. Paul says,

  321. Do not be conformed

  322. to this world,

  323. but be transformed

  324. by the renewal

  325. of your mind,

  326. that by testing

  327. you may discern

  328. what is the will of God,

  329. what is good

  330. and acceptable

  331. and perfect.

  332. Verse 2

  333. is an explanation

  334. of how we are to fulfill

  335. the encouragement

  336. of verse 1,

  337. which Paul will then

  338. work out in greater detail

  339. to the very end

  340. of the chapter.

  341. He begins with the negative

  342. part of the exhortation,

  343. Do not be conformed

  344. to this world.

  345. To be conformed

  346. is from a word

  347. that means

  348. shaped

  349. or molded.

  350. It refers to the

  351. outward appearance

  352. of a thing

  353. and not the substance

  354. of it.

  355. Paul is saying

  356. that we are not

  357. of this world

  358. and therefore

  359. we should not look

  360. like we are

  361. of this world.

  362. World could also

  363. be rendered age,

  364. which I prefer.

  365. I think it pulls

  366. our thinking

  367. beyond just the material

  368. and presses us

  369. to think toward

  370. the immaterial.

  371. Thoughts,

  372. emotions,

  373. motivations,

  374. ideology,

  375. and so forth.

  376. G.C. Trench

  377. in his book

  378. Synonyms of the New Testament

  379. on this word

  380. world

  381. or age

  382. says this,

  383. quote,

  384. that floating mass

  385. of thoughts,

  386. opinions,

  387. maxims,

  388. speculations,

  389. hopes,

  390. impulses,

  391. aims,

  392. aspirations,

  393. at any time

  394. current in the world

  395. which it may be impossible

  396. to seize

  397. and accurately define,

  398. but which constitute

  399. a most real

  400. and effective power

  401. being the moral

  402. or immoral atmosphere

  403. which at every moment

  404. of our lives

  405. we inhale

  406. again inevitably

  407. to exhale,

  408. end quote.

  409. Right?

  410. This is explanation

  411. of this word,

  412. world.

  413. Do not be conformed

  414. to that.

  415. Paul distinguishes

  416. this world

  417. or age

  418. from the will

  419. of God

  420. which is good

  421. and acceptable

  422. and perfect.

  423. So the spirit

  424. of this age

  425. runs in contradiction

  426. to the ways

  427. of God

  428. and we ought

  429. to not be conformed

  430. to it.

  431. It will always

  432. be pressing

  433. onto us

  434. and into us.

  435. The age

  436. in which we live

  437. cries out

  438. for conformity.

  439. But our reasonable

  440. worship

  441. is to rather

  442. be transformed

  443. by the renewal

  444. of our minds.

  445. We are to be changed

  446. by thinking

  447. differently

  448. than this age.

  449. This Greek word

  450. is where we derive

  451. our word

  452. metamorphosis.

  453. Whereas to be

  454. conformed

  455. is in contradiction

  456. with our nature.

  457. To be transformed

  458. is to be becoming

  459. consistent

  460. with our nature.

  461. we have been

  462. made new

  463. in Christ.

  464. So we are to be

  465. about appearing

  466. new

  467. in

  468. Christ

  469. by the grace

  470. that God provides.

  471. This is

  472. the glorious

  473. work

  474. of sanctification.

  475. Paul says of us

  476. in 2 Corinthians 3

  477. and verse 18

  478. and we all

  479. with unveiled face

  480. beholding

  481. the glory

  482. of the Lord

  483. are being

  484. transformed

  485. into the same

  486. image

  487. from one

  488. degree

  489. of glory

  490. to another.

  491. For this

  492. comes

  493. from the Lord

  494. who is the Spirit.

  495. He is the Spirit

  496. working in us

  497. to make us

  498. look more

  499. like Christ

  500. bit

  501. by bit

  502. by bit.

  503. The Spirit

  504. of Christ

  505. empowers us

  506. to look

  507. more like Him

  508. as He leads

  509. us

  510. in the Word

  511. of Christ.

  512. I see my argument

  513. coming together

  514. here.

  515. What part

  516. do we

  517. play?

  518. This is an

  519. exhortation

  520. to us

  521. to be

  522. transformed

  523. by the

  524. renewal

  525. of our

  526. mind.

  527. What are we

  528. to be about

  529. in this

  530. work

  531. of being

  532. transformed?

  533. Before I

  534. spend the

  535. remainder of

  536. our time

  537. addressing

  538. this question

  539. I want

  540. to make

  541. a brief

  542. aside

  543. concerning

  544. mental

  545. health

  546. by making

  547. four

  548. axiomatic

  549. statements.

  550. I don't

  551. want to

  552. oversimplify

  553. this.

  554. There are

  555. complications

  556. in the

  557. world

  558. in which

  559. we live.

  560. Four

  561. quick

  562. statements

  563. and then

  564. we'll

  565. press on.

  566. Number

  567. one,

  568. we are

  569. embodied

  570. souls

  571. and our

  572. thinking

  573. faculty

  574. takes place

  575. within an

  576. organ

  577. that is

  578. susceptible

  579. to the

  580. curse.

  581. There is

  582. a gray

  583. matter

  584. organ

  585. in which

  586. all

  587. the

  588. neurons

  589. fire.

  590. This is

  591. where our

  592. thinking

  593. is

  594. going

  595. on.

  596. It is

  597. also

  598. susceptible

  599. to the

  600. curse.

  601. I'm a

  602. type 1

  603. diabetic

  604. and my

  605. pancreas

  606. does not

  607. produce

  608. insulin.

  609. In the

  610. same way,

  611. we should

  612. understand

  613. that the

  614. organ

  615. is

  616. susceptible.

  617. Secondly,

  618. some,

  619. not all,

  620. but some

  621. of our

  622. spiritual

  623. problems

  624. intersect

  625. a

  626. physical

  627. problem.

  628. My

  629. really big

  630. and obvious

  631. common

  632. example of

  633. this is

  634. schizophrenia.

  635. This is a

  636. physical

  637. problem going

  638. on in the

  639. brain,

  640. but it

  641. has

  642. spiritual

  643. implications

  644. and both

  645. need to

  646. be

  647. addressed.

  648. Thirdly,

  649. physical

  650. problems

  651. are never

  652. an excuse

  653. for sin.

  654. They don't

  655. become

  656. entitlement

  657. to sin

  658. against God

  659. because,

  660. fourthly,

  661. God is

  662. more

  663. powerful

  664. than your

  665. physical

  666. and,

  667. for that

  668. matter,

  669. spiritual

  670. problems.

  671. He is

  672. more

  673. powerful.

  674. 1 Corinthians

  675. 10,

  676. 13,

  677. Paul says,

  678. no temptation

  679. has overtaken

  680. you that

  681. is not

  682. common

  683. to man.

  684. So,

  685. guess what?

  686. You're not

  687. unique.

  688. You don't

  689. get a

  690. pass on

  691. your sin.

  692. God

  693. is faithful

  694. and he

  695. will not

  696. let you

  697. be tempted

  698. beyond

  699. your ability,

  700. but with

  701. the temptation

  702. he will

  703. also provide

  704. the way

  705. of escape

  706. that you

  707. may be

  708. able

  709. to endure

  710. it.

  711. So,

  712. grace

  713. comes

  714. with it

  715. and God

  716. is more

  717. powerful

  718. than your

  719. physical

  720. or

  721. spiritual

  722. problems.

  723. Okay,

  724. so,

  725. what are

  726. we to

  727. do in

  728. the work

  729. of being

  730. transformed

  731. by the

  732. renewal

  733. of our

  734. minds?

  735. What is

  736. the activity

  737. that we're

  738. meant to

  739. be engaging

  740. in?

  741. Let me show

  742. you two

  743. biblical

  744. examples

  745. and one

  746. extra

  747. biblical

  748. so that we

  749. can learn

  750. just a bit

  751. about it.

  752. So,

  753. if you will,

  754. please join me

  755. in Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  756. chapter 3.

  757. In the

  758. fall,

  759. I want you

  760. to see a

  761. negative

  762. example

  763. of the

  764. leading of

  765. the mind.

  766. Here we

  767. see beginning

  768. in verse 1,

  769. now the

  770. serpent was

  771. more crafty

  772. than any

  773. other beast

  774. of the

  775. field

  776. that the

  777. Lord God

  778. had made.

  779. He said

  780. to the

  781. woman,

  782. he addresses

  783. her at

  784. her point

  785. of faculty,

  786. did God

  787. actually say

  788. you shall

  789. not eat

  790. of any

  791. tree

  792. in the

  793. garden?

  794. Satan

  795. tempts

  796. Eve to

  797. doubt

  798. God's

  799. word,

  800. to doubt

  801. the

  802. truth.

  803. And the

  804. woman said

  805. to the

  806. serpent,

  807. we may

  808. eat of

  809. the fruit

  810. of the

  811. trees

  812. in the

  813. garden,

  814. but God

  815. said,

  816. you shall

  817. not eat

  818. of the

  819. fruit

  820. of the

  821. tree

  822. that is

  823. in the

  824. midst

  825. of the

  826. garden,

  827. neither

  828. shall

  829. you

  830. touch

  831. it,

  832. lest

  833. you

  834. die.

  835. So here,

  836. Eve fails

  837. because

  838. Eve adds

  839. to God's

  840. word.

  841. The very

  842. first

  843. legalist

  844. in the

  845. Bible.

  846. As you can

  847. see in

  848. Genesis 2,

    Genesis 2:16

  849. verse 16

  850. and 17,

  851. Lord God

  852. commanded

  853. the

  854. man saying,

  855. you may

  856. surely

  857. eat of

  858. every

  859. tree

  860. of

  861. the

  862. garden,

  863. but of

  864. the

  865. tree

  866. of

  867. the

  868. knowledge

  869. of

  870. good

  871. and

  872. evil,

  873. you

  874. shall

  875. not

  876. eat,

  877. for in

  878. the day

  879. that you

  880. eat of

  881. it,

  882. you shall

  883. surely

  884. die.

  885. Eve has

  886. added this

  887. prohibition

  888. from

  889. touching

  890. as well.

  891. But the

  892. serpent

  893. said to

  894. the woman,

  895. you will

  896. not

  897. surely

  898. die.

  899. He

  900. tempts

  901. Eve to

  902. doubt

  903. God's

  904. goodness,

  905. for God

  906. knows that

  907. when you

  908. eat of

  909. it,

  910. your eyes

  911. will be

  912. open and

  913. you will

  914. be like

  915. God,

  916. knowing

  917. good

  918. and

  919. evil.

  920. So,

  921. Eve

  922. disbelieves

  923. God.

  924. This is

  925. a mental

  926. activity

  927. that's

  928. going on

  929. and then

  930. we see

  931. the results.

  932. So,

  933. when the

  934. woman saw

  935. that the

  936. tree

  937. was good

  938. for

  939. food,

  940. it is

  941. objectively

  942. not,

  943. and that

  944. it was a

  945. delight to

  946. the eyes

  947. and that

  948. the tree

  949. was to

  950. be

  951. desired

  952. to make

  953. one

  954. wise,

  955. she took

  956. of its

  957. fruit

  958. and ate

  959. and she

  960. also gave

  961. some to

  962. her husband

  963. who was

  964. with her

  965. and he

  966. ate.

  967. A failure

  968. on both

  969. of their

  970. parts

  971. to let

  972. their

  973. minds

  974. lead

  975. and win

  976. the day.

  977. Second

  978. example,

  979. let's go to

  980. Psalm 73.

  981. Turn with

  982. me if you

  983. will.

  984. Psalm 73.

  985. Psalm 73.

  986. Asaph,

  987. one of the

  988. Old Testament

  989. saints I

  990. look forward

  991. to meeting

  992. someday.

  993. And we

  994. see a

  995. complete

  996. arc in

  997. this

  998. Psalm of

  999. his

  1000. thinking.

  1001. He feels

  1002. a way

  1003. and then

  1004. he

  1005. thinks

  1006. and feels

  1007. a different

  1008. way.

  1009. Starts out

  1010. in verse

  1011. 1.

  1012. Truly,

  1013. God is

  1014. good to

  1015. Israel.

  1016. For me,

  1017. my feet

  1018. had almost

  1019. stumbled.

  1020. My steps

  1021. had nearly

  1022. slipped.

  1023. And he

  1024. tells us

  1025. the story

  1026. of what

  1027. happened.

  1028. For I

  1029. was

  1030. envious

  1031. of the

  1032. arrogant

  1033. when I

  1034. saw the

  1035. prosperity

  1036. of the

  1037. wicked.

  1038. For they

  1039. have no

  1040. pangs

  1041. until death.

  1042. Their

  1043. bodies

  1044. are fat

  1045. and

  1046. sleek.

  1047. They

  1048. are not

  1049. in

  1050. trouble

  1051. as

  1052. others

  1053. are.

  1054. They

  1055. are not

  1056. stricken

  1057. like the

  1058. rest

  1059. of

  1060. mankind.

  1061. Therefore,

  1062. pride is

  1063. their

  1064. necklace.

  1065. Violence

  1066. covers

  1067. them

  1068. as a

  1069. garment.

  1070. Their

  1071. eyes

  1072. swell

  1073. out

  1074. through

  1075. fatness,

  1076. seen as

  1077. a good

  1078. thing.

  1079. Their

  1080. hearts

  1081. overflow

  1082. with

  1083. follies.

  1084. They

  1085. scoff

  1086. and speak

  1087. with

  1088. malice.

  1089. Loftily

  1090. they

  1091. threaten

  1092. oppression.

  1093. They

  1094. set their

  1095. mouths

  1096. against

  1097. the

  1098. heavens

  1099. and

  1100. their

  1101. tongue

  1102. !

  1103. struts

  1104. through

  1105. the

  1106. earth.

  1107. !

  1108. !

  1109. So he

  1110. observes

  1111. people who

  1112. are not

  1113. following

  1114. God

  1115. and they

  1116. just seem

  1117. to be

  1118. doing

  1119. great.

  1120. They

  1121. have

  1122. favor

  1123. with

  1124. the

  1125. people.

  1126. Nothing's

  1127. going

  1128. bad

  1129. in

  1130. their

  1131. lives

  1132. at

  1133. all.

  1134. And

  1135. then he

  1136. says,

  1137. verse

  1138. 13,

  1139. all

  1140. in

  1141. vain

  1142. have

  1143. I

  1144. kept

  1145. my

  1146. heart

  1147. clean

  1148. and

  1149. washed

  1150. my

  1151. hands

  1152. in

  1153. innocence.

  1154. For

  1155. all the

  1156. day

  1157. long

  1158. I

  1159. have

  1160. been

  1161. stricken

  1162. and

  1163. rebuked

  1164. every

  1165. morning.

  1166. This

  1167. is the

  1168. way

  1169. that he

  1170. feels

  1171. about

  1172. his

  1173. pursuit

  1174. of

  1175. God,

  1176. his

  1177. pursuit

  1178. of

  1179. innocence.

  1180. It's

  1181. been

  1182. in

  1183. vain

  1184. that

  1185. I

  1186. have

  1187. done

  1188. this.

  1189. But

  1190. verse

  1191. 15,

  1192. if I

  1193. had

  1194. said,

  1195. I

  1196. will

  1197. speak

  1198. thus,

  1199. what

  1200. he's

  1201. just

  1202. said.

  1203. He

  1204. recognizes

  1205. that it's

  1206. not

  1207. true.

  1208. It's

  1209. an

  1210. evil

  1211. thing

  1212. for

  1213. him

  1214. to

  1215. say

  1216. this

  1217. and

  1218. to

  1219. feel

  1220. this

  1221. way.

  1222. But

  1223. when

  1224. I

  1225. thought

  1226. how

  1227. to

  1228. understand

  1229. this,

  1230. it

  1231. seemed

  1232. to

  1233. me

  1234. a

  1235. wearisome

  1236. task.

  1237. How

  1238. is it

  1239. that they

  1240. prosper

  1241. and I

  1242. don't?

  1243. I'm

  1244. the

  1245. one

  1246. that's

  1247. pursuing

  1248. !

  1249. God

  1250. and

  1251. they're

  1252. not?

  1253. Why

  1254. am I

  1255. getting

  1256. the short

  1257. end

  1258. of

  1259. the

  1260. stick?

  1261. Verse 17,

  1262. until I

  1263. went

  1264. into the

  1265. sanctuary

  1266. of God.

  1267. Then I

  1268. discerned

  1269. their

  1270. end.

  1271. Their

  1272. end.

  1273. Then the

  1274. truth

  1275. of where

  1276. they're

  1277. headed

  1278. came to

  1279. light.

  1280. Truly,

  1281. you set

  1282. them in

  1283. slippery

  1284. places.

  1285. You make

  1286. them fall

  1287. to ruin.

  1288. How they

  1289. are destroyed

  1290. in a

  1291. moment,

  1292. swept

  1293. away

  1294. utterly

  1295. by

  1296. terrors.

  1297. Like a

  1298. dream when

  1299. one awakes,

  1300. O Lord,

  1301. when you

  1302. rouse

  1303. yourself,

  1304. you despise

  1305. them as

  1306. phantoms.

  1307. That's

  1308. what will

  1309. happen to

  1310. them.

  1311. The

  1312. truth

  1313. begins to

  1314. take its

  1315. place in

  1316. his mind.

  1317. He

  1318. says,

  1319. when my

  1320. soul was

  1321. embittered,

  1322. when I

  1323. was pricked

  1324. in heart,

  1325. I was

  1326. brutish

  1327. and ignorant.

  1328. I was

  1329. like a

  1330. beast

  1331. toward

  1332. you.

  1333. Nevertheless,

  1334. even

  1335. though I

  1336. let emotions

  1337. rule the

  1338. day,

  1339. nevertheless,

  1340. I am

  1341. continually

  1342. with you.

  1343. You

  1344. hold

  1345. my

  1346. right

  1347. hand.

  1348. You

  1349. guide

  1350. me

  1351. with

  1352. your

  1353. counsel

  1354. and

  1355. afterward

  1356. you

  1357. will

  1358. receive

  1359. me

  1360. to

  1361. glory.

  1362. Whom

  1363. have I

  1364. in heaven

  1365. but you?

  1366. And there

  1367. is nothing

  1368. on earth

  1369. that I

  1370. desire

  1371. besides you.

  1372. My

  1373. flesh and

  1374. my heart

  1375. may fail,

  1376. but God

  1377. is the

  1378. strength of

  1379. my heart

  1380. and my

  1381. portion

  1382. forever.

  1383. For

  1384. behold,

  1385. those who

  1386. are far

  1387. from you

  1388. shall

  1389. perish.

  1390. You

  1391. put an

  1392. end to

  1393. everyone

  1394. who

  1395. is

  1396. unfaithful

  1397. to

  1398. you.

  1399. But

  1400. for

  1401. me

  1402. it

  1403. is

  1404. good

  1405. to

  1406. be

  1407. near

  1408. God.

  1409. I

  1410. have

  1411. made

  1412. the

  1413. Lord

  1414. God

  1415. my

  1416. refuge

  1417. that

  1418. I

  1419. may

  1420. tell

  1421. of

  1422. all

  1423. your

  1424. works.

  1425. So

  1426. see the

  1427. arc

  1428. through

  1429. that,

  1430. the

  1431. mindful

  1432. faith

  1433. of

  1434. Asaph.

  1435. What

  1436. does he

  1437. do?

  1438. He

  1439. picks up

  1440. the

  1441. things

  1442. that

  1443. God

  1444. has

  1445. said

  1446. to

  1447. be

  1448. true

  1449. and

  1450. he

  1451. meditates

  1452. on

  1453. them

  1454. and

  1455. he

  1456. let

  1457. them

  1458. lead

  1459. him

  1460. out.

  1461. One

  1462. more

  1463. positive

  1464. example.

  1465. This

  1466. is

  1467. extra

  1468. biblical.

  1469. I

  1470. recognize

  1471. that

  1472. some

  1473. of

  1474. you

  1475. don't

  1476. love

  1477. this

  1478. but

  1479. I

  1480. do

  1481. and

  1482. I

  1483. have

  1484. the

  1485. microphone

  1486. so

  1487. bear

  1488. with

  1489. me.

  1490. This

  1491. is

  1492. from

  1493. the

  1494. Pilgrim's

  1495. Progress.

  1496. Again,

  1497. a work

  1498. that I

  1499. commend,

  1500. commend,

  1501. commend

  1502. to

  1503. you.

  1504. And

  1505. in

  1506. this

  1507. part

  1508. of

  1509. the

  1510. story,

  1511. Christian

  1512. is

  1513. along

  1514. on his

  1515. journey

  1516. with

  1517. a

  1518. man

  1519. named

  1520. Hopeful

  1521. and

  1522. they

  1523. have

  1524. left

  1525. gone

  1526. over

  1527. a

  1528. little

  1529. stile

  1530. into

  1531. a

  1532. field.

  1533. They

  1534. fall

  1535. asleep

  1536. and

  1537. they're

  1538. taken

  1539. captive

  1540. by a

  1541. giant

  1542. named

  1543. Despair.

  1544. He

  1545. takes

  1546. them,

  1547. he

  1548. locks

  1549. them

  1550. in

  1551. the

  1552. dungeon

  1553. of

  1554. his

  1555. castle

  1556. called

  1557. Doubting

  1558. Castle

  1559. where

  1560. he

  1561. is

  1562. there

  1563. with

  1564. his

  1565. wife

  1566. distrust.

  1567. So

  1568. there's

  1569. an

  1570. anguish

  1571. going

  1572. on

  1573. with

  1574. Christian

  1575. and

  1576. with

  1577. Hopeful.

  1578. They're

  1579. not

  1580. believing

  1581. the

  1582. promises

  1583. of

  1584. God

  1585. and

  1586. they

  1587. are

  1588. despairing.

  1589. They're

  1590. in a

  1591. sorrowful

  1592. place.

  1593. Their

  1594. emotions

  1595. are

  1596. leading

  1597. the

  1598. charge

  1599. in

  1600. this

  1601. little

  1602. episode.

  1603. And

  1604. so

  1605. time

  1606. has

  1607. gone

  1608. on.

  1609. I'm

  1610. going

  1611. to

  1612. spare

  1613. you

  1614. very

  1615. much

  1616. reading

  1617. of

  1618. it.

  1619. But

  1620. the

  1621. giant

  1622. has

  1623. come

  1624. and

  1625. beat

  1626. them

  1627. almost

  1628. to

  1629. the

  1630. point

  1631. of

  1632. death.

  1633. And

  1634. he

  1635. has

  1636. promised

  1637. that

  1638. he'll

  1639. now

  1640. take

  1641. care

  1642. of

  1643. them

  1644. the

  1645. following

  1646. day.

  1647. I

  1648. pick

  1649. up

  1650. reading

  1651. here.

  1652. Quote,

  1653. Around

  1654. midnight,

  1655. Christian

  1656. hopeful

  1657. began to

  1658. pray and

  1659. continue

  1660. till

  1661. almost

  1662. the

  1663. break

  1664. of

  1665. day.

  1666. Shortly

  1667. before

  1668. the

  1669. sun

  1670. came

  1671. up,

  1672. good

  1673. Christian,

  1674. as one

  1675. half

  1676. amazed,

  1677. broke

  1678. out into

  1679. this

  1680. passionate

  1681. speech.

  1682. What a

  1683. fool

  1684. I

  1685. am

  1686. to

  1687. lie

  1688. in

  1689. a

  1690. stinking

  1691. dungeon

  1692. when

  1693. I

  1694. might

  1695. instead

  1696. walk

  1697. at

  1698. liberty.

  1699. I

  1700. have

  1701. a

  1702. key

  1703. in

  1704. my

  1705. bosom

  1706. called

  1707. promise

  1708. that

  1709. I

  1710. believe

  1711. will

  1712. open

  1713. any

  1714. lock

  1715. in

  1716. doubting

  1717. castle.

  1718. Promise

  1719. God's

  1720. word

  1721. to

  1722. him.

  1723. Hopeful

  1724. responded,

  1725. that is

  1726. good news,

  1727. good

  1728. brother.

  1729. Take

  1730. it out

  1731. and

  1732. let's

  1733. try

  1734. it.

  1735. Then

  1736. Christian

  1737. pulled

  1738. it out

  1739. of his

  1740. bosom

  1741. and

  1742. began

  1743. trying

  1744. to

  1745. unlock

  1746. the

  1747. dungeon

  1748. door.

  1749. The

  1750. door's

  1751. bolt

  1752. as he

  1753. turned

  1754. the

  1755. key

  1756. came

  1757. loose

  1758. and

  1759. the

  1760. door

  1761. flew

  1762. open

  1763. with

  1764. ease.

  1765. Christian

  1766. and

  1767. hopeful

  1768. both

  1769. came

  1770. out

  1771. and

  1772. they're

  1773. pursued

  1774. but

  1775. they

  1776. make

  1777. it

  1778. safely

  1779. out

  1780. of

  1781. doubting

  1782. castle

  1783. letting

  1784. the

  1785. truth

  1786. reign

  1787. in

  1788. the

  1789. moment.

  1790. So

  1791. a couple

  1792. of

  1793. practical

  1794. steps

  1795. for

  1796. to be

  1797. transformed

  1798. by

  1799. the

  1800. renewing

  1801. of

  1802. our

  1803. minds

  1804. we

  1805. are

  1806. going

  1807. to

  1808. need

  1809. number

  1810. one

  1811. to

  1812. read.

  1813. I

  1814. always

  1815. encourage

  1816. wide

  1817. broad

  1818. reading

  1819. but

  1820. primarily

  1821. we need

  1822. to be

  1823. reading

  1824. God's

  1825. word.

  1826. If the

  1827. spirit

  1828. of

  1829. Christ

  1830. is to

  1831. take

  1832. up

  1833. the

  1834. word

  1835. of

  1836. Christ

  1837. in

  1838. our

  1839. lives

  1840. it's

  1841. going

  1842. to

  1843. have

  1844. to

  1845. be

  1846. inside

  1847. of

  1848. us.

  1849. Paul

  1850. says in

  1851. 2 Timothy

  1852. 3

  1853. 16

  1854. and 17

  1855. all

  1856. scripture

  1857. is

  1858. breathed

  1859. out

  1860. by

  1861. God

  1862. and

  1863. profitable

  1864. for

  1865. teaching

  1866. for

  1867. reproof

  1868. for

  1869. correction

  1870. and

  1871. for

  1872. training

  1873. in

  1874. righteousness

  1875. that

  1876. the

  1877. man

  1878. of

  1879. God

  1880. may

  1881. be

  1882. complete

  1883. equipped

  1884. for

  1885. every

  1886. good

  1887. work.

  1888. How are we

  1889. to navigate

  1890. the challenges

  1891. of this

  1892. world?

  1893. How are we

  1894. to do

  1895. anything?

  1896. By the

  1897. truth that

  1898. God

  1899. provides

  1900. for us.

  1901. The spirit

  1902. employing

  1903. it

  1904. in

  1905. our

  1906. lives.

  1907. I

  1908. said at

  1909. the

  1910. beginning

  1911. of

  1912. our

  1913. time

  1914. together

  1915. that

  1916. in

  1917. an

  1918. age

  1919. of

  1920. post

  1921. modernity

  1922. and

  1923. moral

  1924. relativism

  1925. we

  1926. find

  1927. ourselves

  1928. particularly

  1929. susceptible

  1930. to the

  1931. temptation

  1932. of allowing

  1933. our

  1934. passions

  1935. to lead

  1936. the

  1937. charge

  1938. in

  1939. directing

  1940. our

  1941. lives.

  1942. This

  1943. just

  1944. shouldn't

  1945. be so.

  1946. John

  1947. Piper

  1948. in his

  1949. book

  1950. on

  1951. regeneration

  1952. called

  1953. Finally

  1954. !

  1955. Alive

  1956. wrote

  1957. this,

  1958. My

  1959. feelings

  1960. are

  1961. not

  1962. God.

  1963. God

  1964. is

  1965. God.

  1966. My

  1967. feelings

  1968. do

  1969. not

  1970. define

  1971. truth.

  1972. God's

  1973. word

  1974. defines

  1975. truth.

  1976. My

  1977. feelings

  1978. are

  1979. echoes

  1980. and

  1981. responses

  1982. to

  1983. what

  1984. my

  1985. mind

  1986. perceives.

  1987. And

  1988. sometimes,

  1989. many

  1990. times,

  1991. my

  1992. feelings

  1993. are

  1994. out

  1995. of

  1996. sync

  1997. with

  1998. the

  1999. truth.

  2000. When

  2001. that

  2002. happens,

  2003. and it

  2004. happens

  2005. every

  2006. day

  2007. in

  2008. some

  2009. measure,

  2010. I

  2011. try

  2012. not

  2013. to

  2014. bend

  2015. the

  2016. truth

  2017. to

  2018. justify

  2019. my

  2020. imperfect

  2021. feelings,

  2022. but

  2023. rather,

  2024. I

  2025. plead

  2026. with

  2027. God,

  2028. purify

  2029. my

  2030. perceptions

  2031. of

  2032. your

  2033. truth

  2034. and

  2035. transform

  2036. my

  2037. feelings

  2038. so that

  2039. they are

  2040. in sync

  2041. with

  2042. the

  2043. truth.

  2044. End

  2045. quote.

  2046. The

  2047. average

  2048. American

  2049. spends

  2050. one

  2051. hour

  2052. and

  2053. twenty

  2054. seven

  2055. minutes

  2056. playing

  2057. video

  2058. games

  2059. per

  2060. day,

  2061. that

  2062. just

  2063. pains

  2064. me

  2065. deep

  2066. down

  2067. in,

  2068. and

  2069. two

  2070. hours

  2071. and

  2072. fourteen

  2073. minutes

  2074. on

  2075. social

  2076. media.

  2077. I

  2078. am

  2079. sure

  2080. that

  2081. I

  2082. am

  2083. speaking

  2084. to

  2085. an

  2086. exceptional

  2087. group

  2088. of

  2089. individuals,

  2090. but

  2091. perhaps

  2092. this

  2093. is

  2094. true

  2095. of

  2096. us

  2097. in

  2098. at

  2099. least

  2100. some

  2101. measure.

  2102. That's

  2103. three

  2104. hours

  2105. and

  2106. forty

  2107. one

  2108. minutes

  2109. a

  2110. day

  2111. spent

  2112. unnecessarily

  2113. in front

  2114. of a

  2115. screen.

  2116. Not

  2117. all bad,

  2118. I'm not

  2119. saying that

  2120. all of

  2121. that is

  2122. bad,

  2123. wasted

  2124. time,

  2125. but

  2126. that's

  2127. a lot

  2128. of

  2129. time.

  2130. For

  2131. further

  2132. perspective,

  2133. that's

  2134. 529

  2135. hours

  2136. and

  2137. fifteen

  2138. minutes

  2139. of

  2153. consumption

  2154. per

  2159. twenty

  2160. five

  2161. minutes

  2162. total

  2163. per

  2164. year.

  2165. I

  2166. didn't

  2167. do

  2168. the

  2169. math,

  2170. but

  2171. you

  2172. should

  2173. divide

  2174. that

  2175. by

  2176. 365

  2177. and

  2178. see

  2179. how

  2180. many

  2181. days

  2182. that

  2183. is.

  2184. Now

  2185. it

  2186. takes

  2187. on

  2188. average

  2189. an

  2190. individual

  2191. 78

  2192. hours

  2193. to

  2194. read

  2195. the

  2196. entirety

  2197. of

  2198. the

  2199. Bible.

  2200. Which

  2201. means

  2202. that

  2203. if

  2204. the

  2205. average

  2206. American

  2207. replaced

  2208. their

  2209. video

  2210. game

  2211. and

  2212. social

  2213. media

  2214. consumption,

  2215. I'm not

  2216. saying

  2217. you need

  2218. to do

  2219. that,

  2220. but

  2221. if

  2222. you did

  2223. with

  2224. Bible

  2225. reading,

  2226. you could

  2227. read the

  2228. whole

  2229. Bible

  2230. a bit

  2231. more

  2232. than

  2233. 17

  2234. times

  2235. per

  2236. year.

  2237. We

  2238. have

  2239. time

  2240. to be

  2241. in

  2242. God's

  2243. word.

  2244. Ready

  2245. for another

  2246. one?

  2247. The

  2248. average

  2249. American

  2250. spends

  2251. 11

  2252. hours

  2253. and

  2254. 42

  2255. minutes

  2256. per

  2257. week

  2258. working

  2259. out,

  2260. including

  2261. stretching,

  2262. warm-up,

  2263. cool-down.

  2264. That's

  2265. 608

  2266. hours

  2267. and

  2268. 24

  2269. minutes

  2270. per

  2271. year,

  2272. which

  2273. is

  2274. enough

  2275. time

  2276. to

  2277. read

  2278. the

  2279. entirety

  2280. of

  2281. the

  2282. Bible

  2283. almost

  2284. eight

  2285. times.

  2286. Don't

  2287. stop

  2288. taking care

  2289. of your

  2290. bodies.

  2291. That's a

  2292. good

  2293. thing to

  2294. do,

  2295. but

  2296. we

  2297. have

  2298. time.

  2299. Paul

  2300. says in

  2301. 1 Timothy

  2302. 4,

  2303. 8,

  2304. God

  2305. is

  2306. of

  2307. some

  2308. value.

  2309. God

  2310. is

  2311. of

  2312. value

  2313. in

  2314. every

  2315. way

  2316. as

  2317. it

  2318. holds

  2319. promise

  2320. for

  2321. the

  2322. present

  2323. life

  2324. and

  2325. also

  2326. for

  2327. the

  2328. life

  2329. to

  2330. come.

  2331. We

  2332. need to

  2333. be

  2334. regular

  2335. readers

  2336. of God's

  2337. word.

  2338. We

  2339. need to

  2340. take it

  2341. in

  2342. in

  2343. high

  2344. amounts

  2345. again,

  2346. again,

  2347. again.

  2348. We

  2349. are

  2350. to be

  2351. people

  2352. of

  2353. this

  2354. word,

  2355. right?

  2356. Arm

  2357. the

  2358. spirit

  2359. in

  2360. your

  2361. life

  2362. to

  2363. take

  2364. it

  2365. up

  2366. and

  2367. give

  2368. it

  2369. application.

  2370. Almost

  2371. all

  2372. of

  2373. the

  2374. counseling

  2375. I

  2376. do

  2377. in

  2378. this

  2379. church,

  2380. not

  2381. all,

  2382. but

  2383. almost

  2384. all

  2385. the

  2386. counseling

  2387. I

  2388. do

  2389. in

  2390. this

  2391. church

  2392. begins

  2393. with

  2394. how's

  2395. your

  2396. Bible

  2397. reading?

  2398. And

  2399. very

  2400. often

  2401. it's

  2402. not

  2403. going

  2404. too

  2405. well.

  2406. Somebody's

  2407. not

  2408. spending

  2409. much

  2410. time

  2411. with

  2412. the

  2413. Lord

  2414. in

  2415. his

  2416. word.

  2417. So

  2418. we

  2419. need

  2420. to

  2421. read

  2422. it.

  2423. Not

  2424. only

  2425. that

  2426. though,

  2427. we

  2428. also

  2429. need

  2430. to

  2431. reflect

  2432. upon

  2433. it.

  2434. Every

  2435. single

  2436. one

  2437. of

  2438. us,

  2439. myself

  2440. whatever

  2441. is

  2442. going

  2443. on

  2444. in

  2445. our

  2446. lives.

  2447. It

  2448. must

  2449. be

  2450. something

  2451. that

  2452. is

  2453. active

  2454. inside

  2455. of

  2456. us.

  2457. Psalm

  2458. chapter

  2459. one

  2460. verse

  2461. one

  2462. and

  2463. two

  2464. blessed

  2465. is

  2466. the

  2467. man

  2468. who

  2469. walks

  2470. not

  2471. in

  2472. the

  2473. counsel

  2474. of

  2475. the

  2476. wicked

  2477. nor

  2478. stands

  2479. in

  2480. the

  2481. way

  2482. of

  2483. sinners

  2484. nor

  2485. sits

  2486. in

  2487. the

  2488. seat

  2489. of

  2490. scoffers

  2491. but

  2492. his

  2493. delight

  2494. is

  2495. in

  2496. the

  2497. law

  2498. of

  2499. the

  2500. Lord

  2501. and

  2502. on

  2503. his

  2504. law

  2505. he

  2506. meditates

  2507. day

  2508. and

  2509. night.

  2510. Fairly

  2511. clear

  2512. takes

  2513. the

  2514. time

  2515. to

  2516. think

  2517. about

  2518. it.

  2519. Steps

  2520. into

  2521. situations

  2522. and

  2523. is

  2524. constantly

  2525. running

  2526. everything

  2527. through

  2528. the

  2529. filter

  2530. of

  2531. God's

  2532. word.

  2533. How

  2534. does

  2535. God's

  2536. word

  2537. speak

  2538. to

  2539. me

  2540. in

  2541. this

  2542. moment

  2543. and

  2544. that

  2545. moment

  2546. and

  2547. that

  2548. moment?

  2549. The

  2550. entirety

  2551. of

  2552. our

  2553. lives

  2554. should

  2555. be

  2556. shaped

  2557. by

  2558. God's

  2559. word.

  2560. Psalm

    Psalms 119:9

  2561. 119

  2562. verse

  2563. 9

  2564. and

  2565. 11

  2566. How

  2567. can

  2568. a

  2569. young

  2570. man

  2571. keep

  2572. his

  2573. way

  2574. pure?

  2575. By

  2576. guarding

  2577. it

  2578. according

  2579. to

  2580. your

  2581. word.

  2582. With

  2583. my

  2584. whole

  2585. heart

  2586. I

  2587. seek

  2588. you.

  2589. Let

  2590. me

  2591. not

  2592. wander

  2593. from

  2594. your

  2595. commandments.

  2596. I

  2597. have

  2598. stored

  2599. up

  2600. your

  2601. word

  2602. in

  2603. my

  2604. heart

  2605. that

  2606. I

  2607. might

  2608. not

  2609. sin

  2610. against

  2611. you.

  2612. We

  2613. need

  2614. to

  2615. read

  2616. it

  2617. and

  2618. we

  2619. need

  2620. to

  2621. be

  2622. considering

  2623. it

  2624. reflecting

  2625. upon

  2626. it

  2627. and

  2628. finally

  2629. we

  2630. need

  2631. to

  2632. be

  2633. resting

  2634. in

  2635. it.

  2636. Isaiah

    Isaiah 26 chapter mention

  2637. chapter

  2638. 26

  2639. in

  2640. verse

  2641. 3

  2642. You

  2643. keep

  2644. him

  2645. in

  2646. perfect

  2647. peace

  2648. whose

  2649. mind

  2650. is

  2651. stayed

  2652. on

  2653. you

  2654. because

  2655. he

  2656. trusts

  2657. in

  2658. you.

  2659. This

  2660. world

  2661. is

  2662. a

  2663. troubling

  2664. place

  2665. in

  2666. which

  2667. to

  2668. live.

  2669. Knowing

  2670. God's

  2671. word

  2672. for

  2673. us

  2674. steadies

  2675. us

  2676. through

  2677. all

  2678. of

  2679. those

  2680. storms.

  2681. Paul

  2682. in his

  2683. letter

  2684. to the

  2685. Philippians

  2686. after

  2687. his

  2688. exhortation

  2689. against

  2690. anxious

  2691. living

  2692. says

  2693. this

  2694. rejoice

  2695. always

  2696. in the

  2697. Lord

  2698. again

  2699. I

  2700. will

  2701. say

  2702. rejoice

  2703. let

  2704. your

  2705. reasonableness

  2706. be

  2707. known

  2708. to

  2709. everyone

  2710. the

  2711. Lord

  2712. is

  2713. at

  2714. hand

  2715. do

  2716. not

  2717. be

  2718. anxious

  2719. about

  2720. anything

  2721. but

  2722. in

  2723. everything

  2724. by

  2725. prayer

  2726. and

  2727. supplication

  2728. with

  2729. thanksgiving

  2730. let

  2731. your

  2732. requests

  2733. be

  2734. made

  2735. known

  2736. to

  2737. God

  2738. and

  2739. the

  2740. peace

  2741. of

  2742. God

  2743. which

  2744. surpasses

  2745. all

  2746. understanding

  2747. will

  2748. guard

  2749. your

  2750. hearts

  2751. and

  2752. minds

  2753. in

  2754. Christ

  2755. Jesus

  2756. finally

  2757. brothers

  2758. whatever

  2759. is

  2760. true

  2761. whatever

  2762. is

  2763. honorable

  2764. whatever

  2765. is

  2766. just

  2767. whatever

  2768. is

  2769. pure

  2770. whatever

  2771. if there

  2772. is

  2773. anything

  2774. worthy

  2775. of

  2776. praise

  2777. think

  2778. about

  2779. these

  2780. things

  2781. this is

  2782. what should

  2783. occupy

  2784. our minds

  2785. and I

  2786. would challenge

  2787. you to

  2788. take

  2789. to take

  2790. that list

  2791. and run

  2792. the things

  2793. that you're

  2794. spending your

  2795. mind on

  2796. through that

  2797. list

  2798. and see

  2799. what comes

  2800. out the

  2801. other

  2802. side

  2803. I

  2804. hope

  2805. lots

  2806. of

  2807. good

  2808. stuff

  2809. perhaps

  2810. there's

  2811. some

  2812. things

  2813. we need

  2814. to

  2815. turn

  2816. our

  2817. attention

  2818. away

  2819. from

  2820. that

  2821. we

  2822. might

  2823. turn

  2824. ourselves

  2825. to

  2826. God's

  2827. word

  2828. and

  2829. rest

  2830. within

  2831. it

  2832. so

  2833. Paul

  2834. says

  2835. I

  2836. appeal

  2837. to

  2838. you

  2839. therefore

  2840. by

  2841. the

  2842. mercies

  2843. of

  2844. God

  2845. present

  2846. your

  2847. whole

  2848. self

  2849. your

  2850. whole

  2851. self

  2852. as a

  2853. continual

  2854. sacrifice

  2855. to

  2856. God

  2857. holy

  2858. and

  2859. acceptable

  2860. which

  2861. is

  2862. your

  2863. spiritual

  2864. reasonable

  2865. worship

  2866. do not

  2867. be

  2868. conformed

  2869. to

  2870. this

  2871. world

  2872. but

  2873. be

  2874. transformed

  2875. by

  2876. the

  2877. renewal

  2878. of

  2879. your

  2880. mind

  2881. that

  2882. by

  2883. testing

  2884. you

  2885. may

  2886. discern

  2887. what

  2888. is

  2889. the

  2890. will

  2891. of

  2892. God

  2893. what

  2894. is

  2895. good

  2896. and

  2897. acceptable

  2898. and

  2899. perfect

  2900. and

  2901. I

  2902. will

  2903. tell

  2904. you

  2905. that

  2906. I

  2907. don't

  2908. believe

  2909. that

  2910. this

  2911. is

  2912. some

  2913. kind

  2914. of

  2915. formula

  2916. for

  2917. figuring

  2918. out

  2919. the

  2920. hidden

  2921. will

  2922. of

  2923. God

  2924. for

  2925. your

  2926. life

  2927. but

  2928. rather

  2929. he's

  2930. saying

  2931. if

  2932. you're

  2933. engrossed

  2934. in

  2935. God's

  2936. word

  2937. you're

  2938. going

  2939. to

  2940. know

  2941. what

  2942. God

  2943. would

  2944. have

  2945. you

  2946. do

  2947. and

  2948. he's

  2949. !

  2950. about

  2951. acceptable

  2952. and

  2953. perfect

  2954. things
