  1. Good morning, everybody. Take out your Bibles and turn to the book of Romans, chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  2. I just want to express briefly my gratitude for all your prayers and encouragement.

  3. ! As we were gone up at Duke Hospital, kind of fighting through some infection that I have,

  4. and still kind of doing it. I have my stuff going this morning.

  5. I have a little medicine ball, and it pushes medicine through it, which is pretty cool.

  6. But it's also too big to fit in my pocket of these cowboy-cut Wranglers, so I have it in a fanny pack,

  7. which is really embarrassing. So, returning to the 80s slowly.

  8. But I really want to just thank you for your prayers and encouragement.

  9. That said, I still am a little short of breath, so it might take me longer to kind of get out everything.

  10. But I will be watching the time. I promise not to keep you here longer.

  11. At least at this point, Lord willing, I'm supposed to preach the next passage next Sunday.

  12. So if I have to, I may wrap up some of this and just put it in with next week.

  13. So, we'll see how it goes.

  14. But it's times like this that it's good for the Lord to remind me to not rely on any kind of gifting or ability I have,

  15. but on His strength and His power.

  16. So just join me in a word of prayer.

  17. Father, we offer this time to you.

  18. Please just work in and through me to accomplish your purpose.

  19. And may your word be applied to our hearts through your Holy Spirit.

  20. And may it have the desired effect that you meant for it to have on our souls and our lives as we go from here.

  21. So may you be pleased, Lord, during this time and this preaching and the hearing of your word.

  22. In Christ's name, amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. All right.

  25. Romans 12.

  26. Nathan did a wonderful job last week on Romans 1 and 2, kind of the focus on renewing our minds.

  27. And so, the book of Romans can be really hard to reconnect and just to make sure you don't lose the overall picture of it.

  28. But in short, God's saving grace leads to a new life in Christ.

  29. And in chapter 12 through 15, 13, Paul begins to work out the practical gospel implications of his saving mercy.

  30. So, in light of all that God has done for us, in light of all that the book of Romans has unpacked, the idea that we were chosen by his grace, we've had our sins forgiven, we've been made right with God, justified in his sight, that Christ's righteousness has been given to us, that we are reconciled to him.

  31. We've been adopted into this family, we've been given the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance.

  32. So, in light of all that stuff that Romans has just talked about, now he's saying, therefore, live this way.

  33. That's what starts in chapter 12 and kind of goes forward through the rest of the book.

  34. And today, looking at, that's kind of where we've been, and now where we're going, starting in verses 3 through 8, Paul begins expounding on what the new life in Christ actually looks like.

  35. As in most of his letters, he begins talking with teaching about doctrine, theology.

  36. He does that in Ephesians very clearly.

  37. Maybe the first three chapters are about our great salvation and what God has done for us, and the other three chapters are about working that out in response to that, how godly living, what it looks like.

  38. Very similar at this point.

  39. He concludes this letter with a practical outworking and application of what he's already expounded on.

  40. And so, don't fall off on either side of this cliff, okay?

  41. Truth and knowledge and sound doctrine are vital.

  42. And without it, you will not be saved, all right?

  43. But it is also insufficient without the Holy Spirit's empowerment and application to the inward man.

  44. So, your learning must translate into living.

  45. It must, your theology must transform into doxology.

  46. Doxology.

  47. It's not meant just to be head knowledge.

  48. It must impact your heart.

  49. It must impact your soul.

  50. It must impact the way you think.

  51. Or else it's just dead knowledge in your head.

  52. Both are important, right?

  53. Your head knowledge and your heart response to that truth are vital.

  54. And so, the following verses, just to give you a simple outline, Paul begins with an exhortation in verse 3, an illustration in verses 4 through 5, and then an application in verses 6 through 8.

  55. So, let's read together Romans 12.

  56. We'll start.

  57. You know what?

  58. I'm just going to start with verse 1 just for fun.

  59. To kind of not lose if you weren't here last week or whatever.

  60. But, Paul says,

  61. And he goes on in verse 3.

  62. Let's read together Romans 12.

  63. Let's read together Romans 12.

  64. Let's read together Romans 12.

  65. Let's read together Romans 12.

  66. Let's read together Romans 12.

  67. Let's read together Romans 12.

  68. Let's read together Romans 12.

  69. Let's read together Romans 12.

  70. Let's read Romans 12.

  71. Let's read Romans 12.

  72. Let's read Romans 12.

  73. Let's read Romans 12.

  74. Let's read Romans 12.

  75. Let's read Romans 12.

  76. Let's read Romans 12.

  77. Let's read Romans 12.

  78. Let's read Romans 12.

  79. Let's read Romans 12.

  80. Let's read Romans 12.

  81. Let's read Romans 12.

  82. Let's read Romans 12.

  83. The one who leads with zeal.

  84. The one who does acts of mercy with cheerfulness.

  85. All right.

  86. So, for you people out there that are particularly looking at the second part of verse 6,

  87. that's not where we're going today.

  88. So, just hang tight.

  89. We're going to have a walk through this outline.

  90. But three points today.

  91. Number one, and this is the exhortation,

  92. number one is right attitude.

  93. That's the exhortation in verse 3.

  94. He says,

  95. For by grace given to me, I say to everyone among you,

  96. not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think,

  97. but to think with sober judgment,

  98. each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

  99. So, Paul begins this whole part by recognizing

  100. that what he has is a result of God's grace,

  101. his apostleship, his ministry,

  102. all stems not because of any greatness that's in him,

  103. but completely by God's grace.

  104. He was set apart for the service of Christ.

  105. So, then he's connecting that truth to what we just read,

  106. verses 1 and 2,

  107. the idea of renewing our minds.

  108. In light of that,

  109. Paul calls all believers to think humbly and rightly

  110. about themselves and their role in the church.

  111. So, very clearly at the heart of our sin

  112. and our rebellion against God

  113. is wrong thinking,

  114. temptations to boast about ourselves

  115. and to demean others.

  116. Every single good thing we have is from God.

  117. Everything, including our gifts and our rules

  118. that are in the body.

  119. And Paul makes that crystal clear.

  120. Everything that we have that is good is from God.

  121. Every passage that mentions gifts,

  122. okay,

  123. which there's four, really.

  124. It says in 1 Corinthians 12,

  125. to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit

  126. for the common good.

  127. So, given,

  128. God has appointed in the church

  129. and that he gave,

  130. Ephesians 4.11.

  131. So, anytime gifts are mentioned,

  132. Paul wants you to see it clearly

  133. that it was given to you by God.

  134. And so, if you understand that,

  135. it excludes boasting.

  136. So, he goes hard at that.

  137. So, he's saying,

  138. don't come at this

  139. with an approach of pride.

  140. So, the right response to this,

  141. what is the right attitude?

  142. The right attitude is humility

  143. and not pride.

  144. Richard Baxter,

  145. one of my favorite Puritan writers,

  146. said,

  147. humility is not a mere ornament

  148. of a Christian,

  149. but an essential part

  150. of the new creature.

  151. It is a contradiction in terms

  152. to be a Christian

  153. and not be humble.

  154. So, humility is our only

  155. right response to God

  156. because it recognizes

  157. that we live the Christian life

  158. in the same manner

  159. in which we first became believers,

  160. completely by his grace.

  161. So, humility isn't just pretending,

  162. faking that we're unworthy,

  163. right,

  164. that,

  165. to sound spiritual,

  166. but it's acknowledging

  167. the true reality

  168. that we are unworthy,

  169. that everything we have

  170. is from God,

  171. and that excludes boasting.

  172. So, in light of that,

  173. Paul is calling them to think,

  174. and he says,

  175. in this verse,

  176. I say to you,

  177. right,

  178. I say,

  179. exhort,

  180. warn everyone among you.

  181. Not,

  182. there's this idea of

  183. don't do this,

  184. but do this.

  185. So, here's the negative part.

  186. Not to think,

  187. which means to estimate,

  188. to evaluate himself

  189. more highly

  190. than he ought to think,

  191. or to have an overblown,

  192. exaggerated opinion

  193. of your own importance.

  194. Okay?

  195. A man that I respect a lot

  196. said this,

  197. that a desire for preeminence

  198. is the death

  199. of spiritual usefulness.

  200. Pride is cancerous

  201. to the body,

  202. and few things

  203. can cause more harm

  204. in a local church

  205. than a person

  206. who overrates himself

  207. and tries to perform

  208. a ministry

  209. that he really isn't

  210. gifted to do,

  211. and he boasts about

  212. those gifts

  213. that he doesn't possess.

  214. We've all seen that

  215. in the church.

  216. We've seen people

  217. overrating themselves,

  218. overrating their importance

  219. and their role

  220. in the church

  221. and what great harm

  222. that does.

  223. We've seen people

  224. who don't have gifts

  225. destroy things

  226. because they think

  227. they have them,

  228. and that we haven't

  229. been bold enough

  230. and honest enough

  231. to say,

  232. hey, you really

  233. don't have that,

  234. brother or sister.

  235. So,

  236. that's okay

  237. because you've been

  238. gifted in other ways.

  239. So, let's find out

  240. what that is.

  241. Don't do that.

  242. We also have seen

  243. people boast about

  244. gifts that God

  245. has given

  246. and use them

  247. for their own glory

  248. to exalt themselves.

  249. And both

  250. are expressions

  251. of pride.

  252. God wrote,

  253. or James wrote,

  254. God opposes the proud

  255. but gives grace

  256. to the humble.

  257. In the writer of Proverbs,

  258. pride goes before destruction

  259. and a haughty spirit

  260. before the fall.

  261. So, Paul's really

  262. just saying,

  263. hey, look,

  264. everything we have

  265. is from God,

  266. so what's so special

  267. about you?

  268. And that was

  269. the sickness

  270. that had infected

  271. the Corinthian church

  272. and why Paul

  273. gives them

  274. so many loving

  275. rebukes

  276. about them

  277. boasting

  278. in their spiritual

  279. gifts and saying,

  280. well,

  281. you're neglecting

  282. the biggest mark

  283. of a true believer

  284. and that mark

  285. is Christ-like

  286. love.

  287. You don't have it.

  288. So,

  289. I don't really care

  290. about what other

  291. gifts you have.

  292. And so,

  293. that means

  294. that godly character

  295. counts more

  296. than our gifting,

  297. right?

  298. Our hearts,

  299. what God has done

  300. in us.

  301. So,

  302. Paul is warning,

  303. do not have

  304. a over-inflated,

  305. arrogant opinion

  306. of yourself,

  307. right?

  308. We've seen

  309. people abuse

  310. these gifts.

  311. I have a friend

  312. who is

  313. a campus pastor

  314. of a larger

  315. megachurch.

  316. We disagree

  317. on ecclesiology

  318. a lot,

  319. but he's a brother.

  320. And

  321. he was in

  322. a large staff meeting

  323. of all the different

  324. campuses

  325. that represent

  326. this church.

  327. church,

  328. and the guy

  329. who,

  330. he helped

  331. start this

  332. church many

  333. years ago,

  334. he just kind

  335. of dominates

  336. the meetings.

  337. And most people

  338. are afraid to speak

  339. up.

  340. You ever been

  341. in a meeting

  342. like that

  343. where everybody's

  344. just like,

  345. okay,

  346. okay,

  347. just sort of

  348. nodding along?

  349. Well,

  350. my friend

  351. noticed that

  352. he just

  353. thought he

  354. would speak

  355. up and

  356. just say,

  357. hey,

  358. how about

  359. instead of

  360. doing this,

  361. we maybe

  362. think about

  363. doing this.

  364. You know,

  365. fair assessment.

  366. The guy

  367. who is the

  368. head guy,

  369. the guy

  370. who telecasts

  371. himself,

  372. broadcasts

  373. himself over

  374. all these

  375. campuses,

  376. his remark

  377. back to my

  378. friend was,

  379. well,

  380. one day

  381. when you

  382. start a

  383. church,

  384. you can do

  385. things the

  386. way you see

  387. fit.

  388. And that

  389. is dangerous.

  390. This man

  391. has an

  392. over-exaggerated

  393. view of

  394. himself and

  395. an arrogant

  396. view that if

  397. he pulled out,

  398. this whole thing

  399. would just fall

  400. apart,

  401. right?

  402. We have to be

  403. careful that

  404. there could be

  405. something there

  406. just besides

  407. boasting.

  408. It could be

  409. someone who

  410. thinks they're

  411. a believer and

  412. is not because

  413. they lack the

  414. humility that

  415. believers are

  416. supposed to be

  417. characterized by.

  418. This is why

  419. Paul wrote

  420. in verse

  421. Corinthians 4,

  422. 7,

  423. for who

  424. sees anything

  425. different in

  426. you?

  427. What do you

  428. have that you

  429. did not receive

  430. from God?

  431. If then you

  432. received it,

  433. why do you

  434. boast as if

  435. you had not

  436. received it?

  437. So a gift

  438. can never be

  439. the source of

  440. spiritual pride

  441. because it's a

  442. gift.

  443. Pride is

  444. deception

  445. because,

  446. again,

  447. everything we

  448. have,

  449. this good,

  450. comes from

  451. God,

  452. including our

  453. gifts from

  454. His hand.

  455. So therefore

  456. we have no

  457. grounds to

  458. boast.

  459. But look at

  460. the next part

  461. of this verse.

  462. He says,

  463. rather,

  464. right,

  465. but to

  466. think or

  467. rate your

  468. own ability

  469. with sober,

  470. sound,

  471. clear-headed

  472. judgment,

  473. which leads

  474. us to

  475. recognize in

  476. ourselves we

  477. are nothing.

  478. but in

  479. Christ we

  480. can be

  481. used to

  482. glorify God

  483. with the

  484. gifts that

  485. the Spirit

  486. has bestowed

  487. on us.

  488. So a quick

  489. question.

  490. I mean,

  491. I guess you

  492. could say it's

  493. a real question

  494. for the elders

  495. of our church,

  496. including me,

  497. but just a

  498. question to

  499. all of us.

  500. Do you think

  501. that this church

  502. would fall

  503. apart if you

  504. left?

  505. Do you think

  506. that if you

  507. weren't here to

  508. get things done

  509. that things would

  510. just become

  511. unraveled?

  512. Do you

  513. cherish an

  514. overly

  515. exaggerated

  516. idea of

  517. your own

  518. importance?

  519. Paul responds

  520. to such people

  521. in Galatians 6,

  522. For if anyone

  523. thinks he is

  524. something when

  525. he is nothing,

  526. he deceives

  527. himself.

  528. Think about

  529. this.

  530. Do you use

  531. the gifts

  532. that God

  533. has given

  534. you to

  535. exalt

  536. yourself and

  537. make a name

  538. for yourself?

  539. Jesus would

  540. respond,

  541. whoever exalts

  542. himself will

  543. be humbled,

  544. and whoever

  545. humbles himself

  546. will be

  547. exalted.

  548. Matthew 23,

  549. 12.

  550. Or do you

  551. recognize that

  552. any gift,

  553. any ability

  554. you have,

  555. has been

  556. graciously given

  557. by God,

  558. and that he

  559. intends to

  560. use those

  561. gifts for you

  562. not to make

  563. a name for

  564. yourself,

  565. but to use

  566. it for his

  567. glory and the

  568. strengthening of

  569. the church?

  570. Another scary

  571. prospect,

  572. do you recognize

  573. that he could

  574. take that

  575. gift from

  576. you?

  577. Because he

  578. gave it to

  579. you.

  580. Those are all

  581. things that

  582. stem from

  583. God.

  584. Have you

  585. asked God

  586. to help

  587. you evaluate

  588. yourself

  589. realistically

  590. with sober

  591. judgment about

  592. your role in

  593. the body,

  594. a single

  595. member of

  596. the body

  597. of Christ?

  598. All right,

  599. and he goes

  600. on and he

  601. uses this

  602. phrase in our

  603. text in

  604. verse 3,

  605. this idea

  606. of the

  607. measure of

  608. faith.

  609. Now,

  610. real quickly,

  611. it doesn't

  612. mean saving

  613. faith,

  614. it doesn't

  615. mean quantity

  616. or amount

  617. of faith

  618. given to

  619. individuals,

  620. rather,

  621. each according

  622. to the degree

  623. of faith

  624. apportioned

  625. or allocated

  626. by God

  627. for each

  628. believer to

  629. properly

  630. exercise

  631. their gifts.

  632. This kind

  633. of faith is

  634. a spiritual

  635. endowment,

  636. an ability

  637. given by

  638. the Holy

  639. Spirit to

  640. empower

  641. them to

  642. use their

  643. particular

  644. gift.

  645. Another way

  646. to read

  647. this verse,

  648. each according

  649. to the

  650. degree of

  651. faith that

  652. God has

  653. assigned or

  654. apportioned,

  655. allotted,

  656. allocated,

  657. it seems to

  658. refer right to

  659. the correct

  660. measure of a

  661. spiritual gift

  662. in its

  663. operating features

  664. that God

  665. has given

  666. to every

  667. believer.

  668. So,

  669. if you ever

  670. sat in a

  671. hospital room,

  672. it gets

  673. long days.

  674. There's not

  675. always cool

  676. stuff to

  677. watch on

  678. TV,

  679. and you

  680. don't really

  681. feel like

  682. reading because

  683. you're about

  684. to fall

  685. asleep because

  686. you feel

  687. sick.

  688. So,

  689. what do you

  690. do?

  691. You talk

  692. about kids,

  693. and you talk

  694. about your

  695. kids,

  696. and you look

  697. at pictures.

  698. But at the

  699. time,

  700. we were,

  701. my mother-in-law

  702. sent us a picture

  703. of our two

  704. Labradors,

  705. and I was

  706. like,

  707. wait a minute,

  708. and I had

  709. an apostrophe

  710. epiphany.

  711. But,

  712. some of you

  713. got that

  714. reference.

  715. All right.

  716. An example,

  717. it's just an

  718. example.

  719. All right,

  720. we're going to

  721. use an example

  722. of dogs.

  723. So,

  724. you either love

  725. dogs or you

  726. hate them,

  727. so I don't

  728. know which

  729. one you are

  730. today.

  731. But,

  732. there are

  733. different

  734. categories of

  735. dogs.

  736. Right?

  737. Whether you

  738. knew that

  739. or not.

  740. There are

  741. sporting dogs

  742. like mine,

  743. Labradors,

  744. Spaniels,

  745. Setters,

  746. really good

  747. at just

  748. going out

  749. and having

  750. fun with

  751. and swimming

  752. and chasing

  753. balls.

  754. There are

  755. hounds,

  756. bloodhounds,

  757. blue ticks,

  758. basset hounds.

  759. My brother

  760. used to coon

  761. hunt,

  762. so he had

  763. walker hounds

  764. and blue ticks.

  765. There's

  766. herding dogs

  767. like German

  768. shepherds,

  769. collies.

  770. Healers.

  771. And then

  772. there's toy

  773. dogs,

  774. the most

  775. worthless

  776. category.

  777. I'm just

  778. kidding.

  779. I'm going to

  780. get mean

  781. emails later.

  782. Pomeranians,

  783. Yorkies,

  784. just lap

  785. dogs,

  786. right?

  787. Each kind

  788. of dog,

  789. listen,

  790. each kind

  791. of dog

  792. is given

  793. a specific

  794. but limited

  795. set of

  796. capabilities

  797. and functions

  798. to do

  799. what God

  800. intended it

  801. to do.

  802. it's

  803. amazing

  804. to watch

  805. each breed,

  806. each type

  807. of dog

  808. function in

  809. the way

  810. they're

  811. supposed to.

  812. Like,

  813. I'm amazed

  814. to watch

  815. my Labradors,

  816. like,

  817. the younger

  818. one,

  819. he'll swim

  820. down in

  821. the bottom

  822. of the

  823. lake

  824. and get

  825. something that

  826. we threw

  827. down there

  828. and he'll

  829. bring it

  830. back up.

  831. It's like,

  832. he'll find

  833. things in

  834. the dark.

  835. He'll do

  836. a zigzag

  837. pattern to

  838. find it.

  839. I've seen

  840. my brother's

  841. hounds,

  842. you know,

  843. like,

  844. track down

  845. things.

  846. I've seen

  847. toy dogs

  848. just sit

  849. and be

  850. fed

  851. and petted.

  852. I've seen

  853. German

  854. shepherds

  855. being protective

  856. of their

  857. family members.

  858. So,

  859. given specific

  860. but limited

  861. set of

  862. capabilities,

  863. so,

  864. awesome to

  865. watch them

  866. function.

  867. However,

  868. you would

  869. not want

  870. a St.

  871. Bernard

  872. to function

  873. as a lazy

  874. indoor

  875. toy dog.

  876. Anybody

  877. seen

  878. Beethoven?

  879. He would

  880. just,

  881. without a

  882. job to

  883. do,

  884. he would

  885. go crazy

  886. and he

  887. would just

  888. chew up

  889. your

  890. furniture.

  891. Likewise,

  892. he wouldn't

  893. want a

  894. Pomeranian

  895. swimming out

  896. in the

  897. middle of

  898. a freezing

  899. cold lake

  900. to retrieve

  901. a duck

  902. on a

  903. hunt.

  904. It would

  905. just not

  906. make it.

  907. It would

  908. just sink

  909. and drown.

  910. So,

  911. you wouldn't

  912. want a

  913. Yorkie

  914. to herd

  915. and protect

  916. your sheep

  917. from coyotes.

  918. It just

  919. wouldn't

  920. work.

  921. So,

  922. I know

  923. this is

  924. silly,

  925. but I'm

  926. telling you

  927. this for

  928. a reason.

  929. So,

  930. like dogs,

  931. every believer

  932. has his

  933. own special

  934. but limited

  935. set of

  936. capabilities.

  937. Trying to

  938. operate outside

  939. those capabilities

  940. only produces

  941. frustration,

  942. mediocrity,

  943. anger,

  944. discouragement,

  945. and ultimately

  946. defeat.

  947. But when we

  948. joyfully

  949. fulfill what

  950. God has

  951. given us,

  952. we function

  953. according to

  954. what He

  955. has designed

  956. to us.

  957. It's a

  958. beautiful

  959. thing.

  960. right?

  961. And Paul

  962. says in

  963. Corinthians

  964. 12-11,

  965. all these

  966. are empowered

  967. by the

  968. one and

  969. the same

  970. Spirit

  971. who appoints

  972. to each,

  973. each one

  974. individually

  975. as He

  976. will.

  977. So,

  978. He's given

  979. us individually

  980. gifting.

  981. As God

  982. has given

  983. different gifts

  984. to different

  985. people,

  986. He also

  987. provides

  988. everything

  989. we need

  990. to serve

  991. in that

  992. capacity,

  993. to serve

  994. one another.

  995. So,

  996. that's what

  997. that means.

  998. So,

  999. that's the

  1000. right attitude.

  1001. It's humility,

  1002. not pride.

  1003. It's to

  1004. serve others,

  1005. not yourself.

  1006. It's to

  1007. exalt God

  1008. and not to

  1009. make a name

  1010. for yourself.

  1011. This goes

  1012. to point

  1013. two,

  1014. which is

  1015. right

  1016. relationship.

  1017. Alright?

  1018. Right

  1019. relationships.

  1020. And this

  1021. is the

  1022. illustration

  1023. part,

  1024. verses

  1025. four and

  1026. five.

  1027. Verse

  1028. four,

  1029. for as in

  1030. one body

  1031. we have

  1032. many members,

  1033. and many

  1034. members do

  1035. not all

  1036. have the

  1037. same

  1038. function.

  1039. So,

  1040. we,

  1041. though we

  1042. are many,

  1043. are one

  1044. body in

  1045. Christ and

  1046. individually

  1047. members of

  1048. one another.

  1049. Alright?

  1050. So,

  1051. this is this

  1052. faithful

  1053. cooperation we

  1054. see.

  1055. Paul uses,

  1056. again,

  1057. this very

  1058. endearing,

  1059. familial

  1060. language.

  1061. If you

  1062. want to

  1063. remember the

  1064. beginning of

  1065. the book of

  1066. Romans,

  1067. which was a

  1068. long time

  1069. ago at this

  1070. point,

  1071. he said,

  1072. in chapter

  1073. one,

  1074. verse seven,

  1075. to all

  1076. those in

  1077. Rome who

  1078. are loved

  1079. by God,

  1080. called to

  1081. be saints,

  1082. grace to

  1083. you and

  1084. peace from

  1085. our Father

  1086. and the

  1087. Lord Jesus

  1088. Christ.

  1089. So,

  1090. emphasizing this

  1091. familial

  1092. language,

  1093. he points

  1094. out the

  1095. reality that

  1096. each individual

  1097. Christian is

  1098. a part of

  1099. a larger,

  1100. greater

  1101. whole,

  1102. the church.

  1103. church.

  1104. So,

  1105. to show the

  1106. diversity and

  1107. unity of the

  1108. church,

  1109. when Paul is

  1110. speaking about

  1111. diversity,

  1112. he doesn't

  1113. mean skin

  1114. color,

  1115. gender,

  1116. he's talking

  1117. about giftedness,

  1118. people that,

  1119. the ways that

  1120. we as

  1121. individuals serve

  1122. the body and

  1123. the variety that

  1124. that brings.

  1125. He uses it by

  1126. an analogy to

  1127. the human body

  1128. to teach

  1129. believers humility

  1130. and interdependence.

  1131. Paul gives you a

  1132. larger illustration

  1133. of the body

  1134. in 1 Corinthians

  1135. 12,

  1136. 12 through

  1137. 27.

  1138. You can go and

  1139. check that out.

  1140. He just goes on

  1141. and on about

  1142. the function

  1143. of the body.

  1144. All right?

  1145. But just as

  1146. Paul wrote here,

  1147. just as one

  1148. human body

  1149. is one with

  1150. many members.

  1151. So,

  1152. the Greek word

  1153. for members

  1154. means body

  1155. parts,

  1156. limbs.

  1157. All right?

  1158. So,

  1159. if the church

  1160. is united,

  1161. though it is

  1162. composed of

  1163. many,

  1164. different

  1165. members.

  1166. So,

  1167. on the theme

  1168. as the body

  1169. of Christ,

  1170. just as the body

  1171. has different

  1172. things to do,

  1173. different functions,

  1174. different needs,

  1175. so the church

  1176. has and needs

  1177. people with

  1178. different gifts

  1179. and different

  1180. abilities to

  1181. function properly.

  1182. It says here,

  1183. look,

  1184. it says,

  1185. individually members

  1186. of one another,

  1187. which means that

  1188. we are connected

  1189. connected and

  1190. bound to one

  1191. another.

  1192. Just as an arm,

  1193. a leg,

  1194. an eye,

  1195. an ear,

  1196. a foot,

  1197. a hand,

  1198. has a role

  1199. in the way

  1200. your body

  1201. functions.

  1202. We need all

  1203. those things.

  1204. They're there for

  1205. the benefit of the

  1206. entire body.

  1207. So,

  1208. furthermore,

  1209. these gifts

  1210. do not,

  1211. this is important,

  1212. these gifts

  1213. do not

  1214. belong

  1215. to you.

  1216. They belong

  1217. to the body.

  1218. See that?

  1219. It's not,

  1220. this is my gift,

  1221. my ministry,

  1222. me,

  1223. me,

  1224. me.

  1225. It's like,

  1226. no,

  1227. this is a gift

  1228. that God has

  1229. given to you

  1230. for the benefit

  1231. of the entire body.

  1232. It's really

  1233. important to hear

  1234. that.

  1235. And so,

  1236. as we

  1237. understand this,

  1238. we won't think

  1239. too highly

  1240. of ourselves,

  1241. like you just

  1242. mentioned.

  1243. And we

  1244. give ourselves

  1245. fully to God,

  1246. we will give

  1247. ourselves fully

  1248. to one another.

  1249. Paul wrote

  1250. in 1 Corinthians

  1251. 12,

  1252. if one member

  1253. suffers,

  1254. all suffer

  1255. together.

  1256. Think about this,

  1257. think about your

  1258. life inside

  1259. the body of

  1260. Christ.

  1261. If one member

  1262. suffers,

  1263. all suffer

  1264. together.

  1265. If one member

  1266. is honored,

  1267. all rejoice

  1268. together.

  1269. together.

  1270. Now you

  1271. are the body

  1272. of Christ

  1273. and individually

  1274. members of

  1275. it.

  1276. Beautiful

  1277. illustration,

  1278. 1 Corinthians

  1279. 12,

  1280. 26.

  1281. So,

  1282. it's important

  1283. for you to

  1284. hear this.

  1285. So,

  1286. Paul's goal

  1287. when he wrote

  1288. this 2,000

  1289. years ago

  1290. was not

  1291. to spark

  1292. a fight

  1293. or a debate

  1294. over what

  1295. prophecy means.

  1296. He wasn't

  1297. thinking,

  1298. you know,

  1299. in the future

  1300. they're just

  1301. going to

  1302. have fun

  1303. with this

  1304. one.

  1305. That's not

  1306. what's on

  1307. his mind.

  1308. His emphasis

  1309. here in this

  1310. passage is on

  1311. our interdependence,

  1312. our love,

  1313. and our

  1314. responsibility,

  1315. our faithful

  1316. cooperation

  1317. towards each

  1318. other.

  1319. God has given

  1320. different gifts

  1321. by his spirit

  1322. to different

  1323. people by

  1324. his grace,

  1325. and we should

  1326. use them in

  1327. a manner

  1328. appropriate to

  1329. that gift

  1330. in order to

  1331. build up or

  1332. to edify

  1333. the rest of

  1334. the body.

  1335. So,

  1336. just think

  1337. about your

  1338. own life

  1339. inside this

  1340. local church.

  1341. Do you

  1342. have a

  1343. spiritual

  1344. sense that

  1345. you belong

  1346. to one

  1347. another,

  1348. that when

  1349. someone suffers

  1350. in this

  1351. church,

  1352. you suffer

  1353. with them?

  1354. When they

  1355. rejoice,

  1356. you rejoice

  1357. with them

  1358. because we

  1359. are members

  1360. of one

  1361. another.

  1362. We belong

  1363. to one

  1364. another.

  1365. And any

  1366. harm that's

  1367. done to the

  1368. body is a

  1369. harm done

  1370. to you,

  1371. and any

  1372. good done

  1373. to the

  1374. body is a

  1375. good done

  1376. to you

  1377. because we

  1378. are all

  1379. one.

  1380. So,

  1381. very important

  1382. then that we

  1383. learn to

  1384. cherish one

  1385. another,

  1386. and to

  1387. cherish our

  1388. brothers and

  1389. sisters in

  1390. Christ and

  1391. to see them

  1392. as a

  1393. critical part

  1394. to the

  1395. body

  1396. functioning.

  1397. Alright?

  1398. Let's see

  1399. what we got

  1400. here.

  1401. The third

  1402. one and just

  1403. see how far

  1404. we can get.

  1405. Alright?

  1406. We may have

  1407. to park

  1408. it before

  1409. I run

  1410. out of

  1411. time.

  1412. But,

  1413. this is

  1414. point number

  1415. three.

  1416. So,

  1417. we've had

  1418. right attitude,

  1419. right

  1420. relationships,

  1421. and this is

  1422. right service.

  1423. Alright?

  1424. And this is

  1425. the application.

  1426. Verse six,

  1427. having gifts

  1428. that differ

  1429. according to

  1430. the grace

  1431. given to

  1432. us,

  1433. let us

  1434. use them

  1435. if prophecy

  1436. in proportion

  1437. to our

  1438. faith,

  1439. if service

  1440. in our

  1441. serving,

  1442. and one

  1443. who teaches

  1444. in his

  1445. teaching,

  1446. the one

  1447. who exhorts

  1448. in his

  1449. exhortation,

  1450. the one

  1451. who contributes

  1452. in his

  1453. generosity,

  1454. the one

  1455. who leads

  1456. with his

  1457. zeal,

  1458. and the one

  1459. who does

  1460. acts of

  1461. mercy

  1462. with cheerfulness,

  1463. all right?

  1464. Excuse me.

  1465. Alright,

  1466. so Paul

  1467. mentions these

  1468. gifts we

  1469. possess to

  1470. show that

  1471. they don't

  1472. come from

  1473. us,

  1474. they come

  1475. from God

  1476. and to be

  1477. used for

  1478. his glory.

  1479. Rather,

  1480. these gifts,

  1481. as he says

  1482. right here,

  1483. grace given

  1484. to us

  1485. in that

  1486. passage.

  1487. Therefore,

  1488. because we've

  1489. received these

  1490. gifts by God,

  1491. grace,

  1492. let us use

  1493. them,

  1494. alright?

  1495. In light

  1496. of all

  1497. that,

  1498. Peter says

  1499. it in a

  1500. wonderful way

  1501. about gifts

  1502. in 1 Peter

  1503. 4.10,

  1504. as each

  1505. has received

  1506. a gift,

  1507. use it

  1508. or employ

  1509. it.

  1510. You know,

  1511. you've got

  1512. this amazing

  1513. tool,

  1514. use it.

  1515. Use it

  1516. for the

  1517. function

  1518. that God

  1519. has ordained

  1520. for it,

  1521. to serve

  1522. one another

  1523. as good

  1524. stewards

  1525. of God's

  1526. very grace.

  1527. gifts.

  1528. So,

  1529. I think

  1530. it's pretty

  1531. well accepted

  1532. on any

  1533. side of

  1534. the aisle.

  1535. There's just

  1536. a definition

  1537. for you.

  1538. A spiritual

  1539. gift is

  1540. an ability

  1541. that is

  1542. given

  1543. and empowered

  1544. by the

  1545. Holy Spirit

  1546. to be used

  1547. in any

  1548. ministry

  1549. of the

  1550. church

  1551. for its

  1552. equipping

  1553. and strengthening

  1554. until

  1555. Christ returns.

  1556. The most

  1557. familiar list

  1558. of these

  1559. are in

  1560. 1 Peter 4,

  1561. Romans 12,

  1562. 1 Corinthians 12,

  1563. and Ephesians 4.

  1564. So,

  1565. all kind of

  1566. coming together.

  1567. But,

  1568. you know,

  1569. just to pose

  1570. the question

  1571. though,

  1572. like,

  1573. why are

  1574. spiritual

  1575. gifts so

  1576. controversial?

  1577. you know,

  1578. again,

  1579. we preach

  1580. verse by

  1581. verse,

  1582. and this

  1583. is one of

  1584. the passages

  1585. that some

  1586. people will

  1587. be like,

  1588. I just don't

  1589. want to

  1590. touch that

  1591. one,

  1592. because I'm

  1593. afraid of

  1594. what might

  1595. happen,

  1596. how people

  1597. will respond.

  1598. But we

  1599. have a

  1600. tendency to

  1601. wrap up

  1602. too much

  1603. of our

  1604. worth and

  1605. our identity

  1606. and our

  1607. giftedness,

  1608. and I think

  1609. that's one

  1610. reason that

  1611. we tend

  1612. to quarrel

  1613. over these

  1614. things.

  1615. It gives

  1616. us a chance

  1617. to become

  1618. tribal and

  1619. pick a

  1620. camp,

  1621. and so

  1622. we're not

  1623. going to do

  1624. that.

  1625. But the

  1626. most

  1627. controversial

  1628. gifts of

  1629. the Spirit

  1630. are healing,

  1631. miracles,

  1632. prophecy,

  1633. tongues,

  1634. and their

  1635. interpretation,

  1636. all found in

  1637. 1 Corinthians 12,

  1638. 9 and 10.

  1639. So,

  1640. I will go

  1641. ahead and

  1642. just say

  1643. that there

  1644. are two

  1645. main views

  1646. of the

  1647. gifts,

  1648. of these

  1649. controversial

  1650. gifts.

  1651. things.

  1652. And to

  1653. the best

  1654. of my

  1655. knowledge,

  1656. our

  1657. congregation

  1658. is almost

  1659. split down

  1660. the middle,

  1661. okay?

  1662. I think.

  1663. That's just

  1664. my observation.

  1665. And these

  1666. don't define

  1667. us.

  1668. They're not

  1669. first-tier

  1670. issues at

  1671. all.

  1672. They're not

  1673. something to

  1674. fight and

  1675. divide over.

  1676. Wouldn't that be

  1677. a shame?

  1678. Like,

  1679. everything is

  1680. supposed to

  1681. make us

  1682. stronger and

  1683. tearing us

  1684. apart.

  1685. But,

  1686. there are

  1687. two main

  1688. views.

  1689. There's

  1690. cessationism,

  1691. which is the

  1692. view that some

  1693. of the charismatic

  1694. gifts of the

  1695. Holy Spirit,

  1696. such as tongues,

  1697. prophecy,

  1698. have ceased

  1699. being practiced

  1700. since the early

  1701. church,

  1702. especially following

  1703. the compiling of

  1704. the canon of

  1705. Scripture.

  1706. All right?

  1707. Like,

  1708. so those gifts

  1709. have stopped.

  1710. They served

  1711. a purpose for

  1712. a time,

  1713. and now they've

  1714. ceased.

  1715. And now,

  1716. it's just

  1717. that ceased

  1718. with the

  1719. coming of

  1720. the Scripture

  1721. particularly.

  1722. And there

  1723. are many

  1724. faithful brothers

  1725. in this

  1726. church,

  1727. and men

  1728. that I do

  1729. respect.

  1730. John MacArthur

  1731. is probably

  1732. the most

  1733. noted guy

  1734. in this

  1735. camp,

  1736. but there

  1737. are others.

  1738. And this

  1739. is a

  1740. misconception

  1741. about

  1742. cessationists,

  1743. okay?

  1744. About them.

  1745. That would

  1746. be they don't

  1747. believe that

  1748. God heals

  1749. people,

  1750. or that God

  1751. doesn't do

  1752. miraculous things

  1753. anymore.

  1754. They don't

  1755. really believe

  1756. the Holy Spirit

  1757. is active

  1758. in the life

  1759. of the church.

  1760. That's not

  1761. true.

  1762. Like,

  1763. the cessationists

  1764. that I know

  1765. don't believe

  1766. that at all.

  1767. That's a

  1768. misconception

  1769. from the

  1770. other side.

  1771. And then

  1772. there's

  1773. continuationism.

  1774. There's so

  1775. many different

  1776. ways to

  1777. frame this,

  1778. but in

  1779. short,

  1780. that the

  1781. charismatic

  1782. gifts of

  1783. the Holy Spirit,

  1784. such as

  1785. tongues,

  1786. prophecy,

  1787. healing,

  1788. are still

  1789. in operation

  1790. today,

  1791. as they

  1792. were in

  1793. the early

  1794. part of

  1795. the church,

  1796. and they

  1797. will continue

  1798. until Christ

  1799. returns.

  1800. So here are

  1801. some misconceptions

  1802. about

  1803. continuationists.

  1804. They all

  1805. believe in

  1806. health,

  1807. wealth,

  1808. and prosperity.

  1809. Like,

  1810. unfortunately,

  1811. there are many

  1812. people on TV

  1813. and other

  1814. places that

  1815. really abuse

  1816. this stuff,

  1817. and that we

  1818. would not

  1819. ever associate

  1820. with,

  1821. right?

  1822. Name it

  1823. and claim it.

  1824. Or they

  1825. think that

  1826. God still

  1827. speaks through

  1828. prophets,

  1829. thus saying

  1830. the Bible

  1831. is not

  1832. sufficient.

  1833. That's not

  1834. true.

  1835. I,

  1836. myself,

  1837. am a

  1838. continuationist,

  1839. and like you,

  1840. so a big

  1841. example would

  1842. be cessation

  1843. was to say,

  1844. hey,

  1845. the Bible

  1846. is sufficient,

  1847. so why do

  1848. we need

  1849. all this

  1850. stuff?

  1851. As we

  1852. would say,

  1853. it is because

  1854. the Bible

  1855. is sufficient.

  1856. that we

  1857. practice these

  1858. things.

  1859. It says to

  1860. practice them

  1861. in the Bible.

  1862. So that's,

  1863. yeah,

  1864. we agree,

  1865. it's sufficient.

  1866. So,

  1867. the goal today

  1868. is not to

  1869. unpack all

  1870. the different

  1871. differences

  1872. and issues

  1873. that each

  1874. camp has

  1875. with the

  1876. other.

  1877. That's not

  1878. really the

  1879. goal.

  1880. I don't

  1881. think that's

  1882. what Paul

  1883. meant by

  1884. writing any

  1885. of this.

  1886. But,

  1887. as we move

  1888. forward as

  1889. a church,

  1890. I hope we

  1891. can find ways

  1892. to cooperate

  1893. and move

  1894. forward in

  1895. a way

  1896. that's

  1897. glorifying

  1898. to God

  1899. and loving

  1900. to the rest

  1901. of the body.

  1902. So,

  1903. just a few

  1904. things,

  1905. and then we'll

  1906. see what we

  1907. can do

  1908. to get here

  1909. with these

  1910. gifts.

  1911. Just trying to

  1912. watch the time

  1913. a little bit.

  1914. It's important

  1915. to understand

  1916. why we have

  1917. spiritual gifts.

  1918. Why do we

  1919. have them?

  1920. I have at

  1921. least four

  1922. reasons why

  1923. we have

  1924. them,

  1925. okay?

  1926. and they're

  1927. not exhausted

  1928. but there's

  1929. just a few.

  1930. But the

  1931. ultimate one

  1932. is to bring

  1933. glory to

  1934. Christ through

  1935. his church.

  1936. Peter wrote

  1937. that God

  1938. gives us

  1939. gifts.

  1940. He says

  1941. this,

  1942. as each

  1943. has received

  1944. a gift,

  1945. use it to

  1946. serve one

  1947. another in

  1948. order that

  1949. in everything

  1950. God may be

  1951. glorified through

  1952. Jesus Christ.

  1953. To him belong

  1954. glory and

  1955. dominion forever

  1956. and ever.

  1957. So,

  1958. first and

  1959. foremost,

  1960. the gifts

  1961. are given

  1962. to us

  1963. not to

  1964. make a

  1965. name for

  1966. ourselves,

  1967. which we've

  1968. covered.

  1969. It's also

  1970. not to

  1971. make a

  1972. name for

  1973. our church.

  1974. And how

  1975. many churches

  1976. do you know

  1977. that boast

  1978. about their

  1979. preacher or

  1980. their ministry?

  1981. And that's

  1982. like their

  1983. boast.

  1984. And that's

  1985. not the

  1986. goal.

  1987. The goal

  1988. is to

  1989. point to

  1990. Christ and

  1991. to glorify

  1992. him in all

  1993. things.

  1994. We are

  1995. stewards of

  1996. the gifts

  1997. that he's

  1998. given to

  1999. us.

  2000. And not

  2001. to depend

  2002. on our

  2003. own strength,

  2004. but depend

  2005. on the

  2006. strength that

  2007. God supplies

  2008. so that he

  2009. alone gets

  2010. the glory.

  2011. That's the

  2012. most important

  2013. one.

  2014. Underneath

  2015. that,

  2016. secondly,

  2017. to equip

  2018. and build

  2019. up the

  2020. church with

  2021. both our

  2022. words and

  2023. our deeds

  2024. inside the

  2025. body.

  2026. Our words

  2027. and our deeds

  2028. either serve

  2029. to tear

  2030. down or

  2031. to build

  2032. up.

  2033. Right?

  2034. And when we

  2035. cherish

  2036. over-exaggerated

  2037. ideas of our

  2038. own importance,

  2039. it only

  2040. tears down

  2041. the local

  2042. body.

  2043. Gifts

  2044. are tools

  2045. to build

  2046. with,

  2047. not toys

  2048. to play

  2049. with or

  2050. weapons to

  2051. beat each

  2052. other in the

  2053. head with.

  2054. We focus

  2055. on honoring

  2056. Christ with

  2057. our gifts

  2058. with humility

  2059. and love

  2060. towards

  2061. fellow

  2062. believers.

  2063. This is

  2064. everywhere in

  2065. these passages

  2066. about gifts.

  2067. 1 Corinthians

  2068. 14,

  2069. 26,

  2070. let all

  2071. things be

  2072. done for

  2073. the building

  2074. up.

  2075. It means

  2076. constructive,

  2077. edifying,

  2078. good for

  2079. all people.

  2080. 1 Corinthians

  2081. 12,

  2082. 7,

  2083. but to each

  2084. is given

  2085. a manifestation

  2086. of the

  2087. Holy Spirit

  2088. for the

  2089. common

  2090. good of

  2091. the body.

  2092. Ephesians

  2093. 4,

  2094. the gifts

  2095. help us

  2096. to equip

  2097. the saints

  2098. for the

  2099. work of

  2100. ministry,

  2101. for building

  2102. up of the

  2103. body of

  2104. Christ.

  2105. John

  2106. Piper wrote

  2107. this.

  2108. I really

  2109. appreciated it.

  2110. He said,

  2111. the handling

  2112. of spiritual

  2113. gifts is

  2114. like handling

  2115. dynamite.

  2116. I knew

  2117. a demo

  2118. guy in

  2119. the army

  2120. many years

  2121. ago and

  2122. had classes

  2123. with him

  2124. talking about

  2125. how you're

  2126. holding so

  2127. much stuff

  2128. in your

  2129. hand when

  2130. you're putting

  2131. all this

  2132. stuff together

  2133. and just

  2134. the weight

  2135. of that.

  2136. The handling

  2137. of spiritual

  2138. gifts is

  2139. like handling

  2140. dynamite.

  2141. Dynamis,

  2142. the Greek

  2143. word for

  2144. power,

  2145. is often

  2146. used when

  2147. referring to

  2148. the Holy

  2149. Spirit.

  2150. When used

  2151. rightly,

  2152. the gifts

  2153. are explosively

  2154. loving.

  2155. When used

  2156. wrongly,

  2157. they are

  2158. explosively

  2159. destructive.

  2160. It is

  2161. tempting to

  2162. not use

  2163. them at

  2164. all.

  2165. So that's

  2166. another reason

  2167. we tend

  2168. to just

  2169. not want

  2170. to go

  2171. down this

  2172. road.

  2173. But again,

  2174. they're in

  2175. the Scripture.

  2176. We need

  2177. to talk

  2178. about them.

  2179. Thirdly,

  2180. while we have

  2181. spiritual

  2182. gifts,

  2183. to strengthen

  2184. unity.

  2185. Not to

  2186. create

  2187. unity,

  2188. but to

  2189. strengthen

  2190. unity.

  2191. Paul wrote

  2192. in Ephesians,

  2193. Be eager to

  2194. maintain the

  2195. unity of the

  2196. Spirit and

  2197. the bond of

  2198. peace.

  2199. So we already

  2200. possess unity

  2201. in Christ.

  2202. We are

  2203. united to

  2204. one another.

  2205. So we are

  2206. called to

  2207. maintain that

  2208. unity that

  2209. already exists

  2210. in the Spirit.

  2211. So gifts

  2212. are given to

  2213. us to build

  2214. upon, to

  2215. strengthen, to

  2216. toughen, to

  2217. fortify,

  2218. the already

  2219. existing unity

  2220. we have.

  2221. And serving

  2222. one another

  2223. with our

  2224. gifts is a

  2225. way to

  2226. prevent

  2227. division.

  2228. So again,

  2229. the irony,

  2230. what many

  2231. people in

  2232. the church

  2233. want to

  2234. fight over

  2235. and divide

  2236. over is

  2237. the very

  2238. thing that's

  2239. supposed to

  2240. be a

  2241. strengthening,

  2242. a fortifying

  2243. of our

  2244. unity.

  2245. 1 Corinthians

  2246. 12, 25,

  2247. Paul wrote

  2248. that there

  2249. be no

  2250. division in

  2251. the body,

  2252. but that

  2253. the members

  2254. may have

  2255. mutual

  2256. interest in

  2257. and care

  2258. for one

  2259. another.

  2260. So, and

  2261. then lastly,

  2262. to include

  2263. all believers

  2264. in the work

  2265. of the

  2266. Lord.

  2267. So, in

  2268. other words,

  2269. the work of

  2270. the church,

  2271. the work of

  2272. the ministry

  2273. is not for

  2274. a few

  2275. highly gifted,

  2276. talented,

  2277. educated,

  2278. elite.

  2279. Right?

  2280. They're for

  2281. all of us.

  2282. If you're a part

  2283. of the church,

  2284. you are born

  2285. again.

  2286. You are

  2287. given gifts

  2288. to help

  2289. in the

  2290. Lord's work.

  2291. Every member

  2292. has a role

  2293. in the body.

  2294. Now, you

  2295. are the body

  2296. of Christ

  2297. and individually

  2298. members of

  2299. it.

  2300. 1 Corinthians

  2301. 12, 27.

  2302. So, it's

  2303. important to

  2304. understand the

  2305. why first.

  2306. Just looking

  2307. at our time.

  2308. So, here's

  2309. what I'm

  2310. going to do.

  2311. I'm going to

  2312. work my way

  2313. maybe through

  2314. two of these.

  2315. You know,

  2316. may have to

  2317. stop.

  2318. And I'll

  2319. pick them

  2320. up for

  2321. next week.

  2322. So, don't

  2323. worry, I

  2324. say prophecy

  2325. for next

  2326. week.

  2327. So, you'll

  2328. be tempted

  2329. to come

  2330. back.

  2331. So, anyway,

  2332. even though

  2333. it says

  2334. prophecy first,

  2335. and there

  2336. may be some

  2337. inspired reason

  2338. that it is

  2339. first, we're

  2340. going to start

  2341. with service.

  2342. Alright?

  2343. So, remember,

  2344. these are the

  2345. gifts that are

  2346. mentioned.

  2347. They're not

  2348. meant to be

  2349. exhaustive lists

  2350. of gifts,

  2351. but the

  2352. variety in the

  2353. body is

  2354. evident through

  2355. our various

  2356. gifting in

  2357. proportion to

  2358. our faith.

  2359. Alright?

  2360. So, let's

  2361. talk about

  2362. service first.

  2363. This is one

  2364. that's clearly

  2365. mentioned right

  2366. here in our

  2367. passage.

  2368. The gift of

  2369. service, or it's

  2370. also called the

  2371. gift of

  2372. helps.

  2373. A spirit-given

  2374. capacity and

  2375. desire to

  2376. serve God by

  2377. rendering practical

  2378. help, both in

  2379. physical and

  2380. spiritual matters.

  2381. It recognizes the

  2382. practical needs in

  2383. the body and

  2384. joyfully goes to

  2385. meet those needs

  2386. of people.

  2387. I know many of

  2388. you that have

  2389. this gift, and

  2390. man, I'm so

  2391. thankful for you.

  2392. Christians that

  2393. have that gift

  2394. typically don't

  2395. mind being behind

  2396. the scenes.

  2397. They don't like

  2398. the attention.

  2399. They don't like

  2400. for you to point

  2401. out what they're

  2402. doing.

  2403. They're just

  2404. humbly doing it

  2405. behind the scenes

  2406. to honor God.

  2407. And it's mentioned

  2408. in 1 Corinthians,

  2409. Romans, and

  2410. in 1 Peter.

  2411. Some biblical

  2412. examples of that

  2413. gift are Rebekah

  2414. in Genesis 24,

  2415. and then Tabitha

  2416. in Acts 9.

  2417. So some

  2418. characteristics of

  2419. that gift of

  2420. serving, as

  2421. again, like I

  2422. said, they prefer

  2423. to be behind the

  2424. scenes, especially

  2425. when it frees up

  2426. other people to

  2427. serve in a

  2428. different role.

  2429. Like, let me

  2430. take that so you

  2431. don't have to, and

2432. you can go and do

  2433. that instead.

  2434. People who tend

  2435. to have that gift,

  2436. and they enjoy

  2437. helping without

  2438. being asked, they

  2439. take initiative,

  2440. they see the

  2441. practical needs of

  2442. people in the

  2443. church, and they

  2444. usually are

  2445. characterized by

  2446. humility, quiet,

  2447. and they're active.

  2448. All right?

  2449. Some of the

  2450. misuses, though,

  2451. of this gift is

  2452. people who have

  2453. this gift sometimes

  2454. can become very

  2455. weary in doing

  2456. good, stressed,

  2457. frustrated.

  2458. They tend to

  2459. take on more

  2460. work than they

  2461. should sometimes,

  2462. and the

  2463. admonishment to

  2464. them is to not

  2465. grow weary, but

  2466. to continue

  2467. serving with

  2468. gladness.

  2469. So that's

  2470. service.

  2471. Within teaching

  2472. is mentioned.

  2473. This may be an

  2474. obvious one, but

  2475. really clearly,

  2476. the spirit of

  2477. giving ability to

  2478. instruct believers

  2479. in the truths and

  2480. doctrines of

  2481. God's Word, to

  2482. help explain it,

  2483. clarify it,

  2484. unpack it, and

  2485. then help people

  2486. apply it in

  2487. their lives for

  2488. the building up

  2489. and unifying and

  2490. maturing of the

  2491. body.

  2492. All right?

  2493. So some people

  2494. have that gift.

  2495. Obviously, Paul had

  2496. it, but also

  2497. Apollos had it,

  2498. Acts 18, 24.

  2499. Some characteristics

  2500. about this person

  2501. is they have a

  2502. desire, a

  2503. commitment, and

  2504. ability to

  2505. communicate God's

  2506. Word clearly and

  2507. to help people

  2508. apply it.

  2509. They enjoy

  2510. learning and

  2511. diving into the

  2512. Scripture, learning

  2513. biblical truth, and

  2514. the ability to help

  2515. people understand

  2516. hard passages and

  2517. why they're there.

  2518. Misuses of this

  2519. gift, very true.

  2520. As someone who

  2521. at least I think

  2522. has this gift,

  2523. you expect others

  2524. to completely tune

  2525. in to you when

  2526. you're talking.

  2527. Like, just listen

  2528. to me.

  2529. I'm saying

  2530. something important.

  2531. And tend to get

  2532. frustrated when

  2533. people can't

  2534. understand what

  2535. you're teaching.

  2536. That's some of

  2537. the misuses.

  2538. Alright,

  2539. exhortation.

  2540. Also in our

  2541. passage.

  2542. Those who have

  2543. this gift

  2544. encourage members

  2545. to be involved

  2546. joyfully,

  2547. enthusiastically

  2548. about the work

  2549. of the Lord

  2550. in the body.

  2551. Members that

  2552. have that gift

  2553. usually are good

  2554. counselors,

  2555. they're people

  2556. who motivate,

  2557. they're people

  2558. that when you're

  2559. going through a

  2560. hard time,

  2561. they're usually

  2562. the people you

  2563. want to go talk

  2564. to sometimes

  2565. to help you

  2566. get pushed on.

  2567. the word

  2568. actually means

  2569. like coming

  2570. alongside somebody

  2571. that's not

  2572. doing well

  2573. and helping

  2574. them go the

  2575. right direction

  2576. when they're

  2577. wanting to

  2578. just quit.

  2579. Right?

  2580. Biblical

  2581. examples of

  2582. this you see

  2583. is Barnabas,

  2584. Acts 4,

  2585. 36.

  2586. Characteristics

  2587. of it is

  2588. they see

  2589. problems in

  2590. people's lives

  2591. and they see

  2592. those presents

  2593. with struggling

  2594. people.

  2595. They're the

  2596. people who

  2597. always have

  2598. a word of

  2599. encouragement

  2600. for you.

  2601. The people

  2602. who just

  2603. somehow

  2604. just know

  2605. exactly what

  2606. to say.

  2607. God has

  2608. given them

  2609. the ability

  2610. to say

  2611. things to

  2612. you that

  2613. are like,

  2614. wow,

  2615. how did

  2616. you know

  2617. that's what

  2618. I was going

  2619. through?

  2620. Right?

  2621. And so

  2622. that's the

  2623. it could be

  2624. words or

  2625. deed.

  2626. Some of

  2627. the misuses

  2628. of the

  2629. gift

  2630. can be

  2631. sometimes

  2632. these people

  2633. can come

  2634. across as

  2635. insensitive

  2636. just trying

  2637. to get

  2638. their point

  2639. across.

  2640. They can

  2641. sometimes

  2642. treat people

  2643. as projects

  2644. not really

  2645. meaning to

  2646. but like,

  2647. hey,

  2648. I'm trying

  2649. to help

  2650. you get

  2651. better,

  2652. bro.

  2653. Come on.

  2654. What are

  2655. you doing?

  2656. And they

  2657. sometimes can

  2658. be too quick

  2659. to talk

  2660. before fully

  2661. understanding

  2662. the situation.

  2663. Just some

  2664. observations

  2665. about that

  2666. gift.

  2667. And let's

  2668. just do

  2669. one more

  2670. and then

  2671. we will

  2672. pause and

  2673. let it go

  2674. into next

  2675. week.

  2676. Paul

  2677. mentions

  2678. here in

  2679. Romans 12

  2680. the gift

  2681. of generosity.

  2682. All right,

  2683. members with

  2684. this gift

  2685. give freely

  2686. and joyfully

  2687. to the work

  2688. and mission

  2689. of the body.

  2690. And they

  2691. do it with

  2692. cheerfulness

  2693. and their

  2694. characteristics

  2695. of those

  2696. individuals

  2697. with those

  2698. gifts are

  2699. in Romans

  2700. 12.

  2701. 8.

  2702. I guess

  2703. one good

  2704. example of

  2705. this might

  2706. be Zacchaeus

  2707. in Luke

  2708. 19 or

  2709. the Macedonian

  2710. church in

  2711. 2 Corinthians

  2712. 8.

  2713. Important

  2714. to point

  2715. out here

  2716. that

  2717. automatically

  2718. when you

  2719. hear the

  2720. word

  2721. generosity

  2722. you think

  2723. the people

  2724. who have

  2725. a lot

  2726. of money

  2727. don't you?

  2728. That's like

  2729. what naturally

  2730. comes to your

  2731. mind.

  2732. They have

  2733. a lot

  2734. of money.

  2735. No.

  2736. Not

  2737. necessarily.

  2738. You don't

  2739. have to be

  2740. wealthy to

  2741. have the

  2742. gift of

  2743. generosity

  2744. at all.

  2745. But these

  2746. people are

  2747. motivated to

  2748. help others

  2749. with their

  2750. resources.

  2751. What little

  2752. or how much

  2753. they have.

  2754. And they're

  2755. careful to

  2756. invest the

  2757. money into

  2758. Christ's

  2759. kingdom.

  2760. I know

  2761. people who

  2762. have this

  2763. gift.

  2764. They have

  2765. a strong

  2766. sense of

  2767. stewardship.

  2768. Like look

  2769. everything I

  2770. have has

  2771. been given

  2772. to me by

  2773. God and

  2774. he wants

  2775. me to

  2776. use it

  2777. for the

  2778. advancement

  2779. of his

  2780. kingdom.

  2781. And I

  2782. have to

  2783. use it

  2784. wisely.

  2785. And they

  2786. know how

  2787. to usually

  2788. manage money

  2789. and resources

  2790. that help

  2791. serve the

  2792. body to

  2793. surround them

  2794. and to

  2795. help others.

  2796. Some of

  2797. the misuses

  2798. of this

  2799. gift.

  2800. You've

  2801. seen this

  2802. before.

  2803. Some of you

  2804. have, I

  2805. have.

  2806. They may

  2807. think that

  2808. because they

  2809. give so

  2810. much that

  2811. they have

  2812. the right

  2813. to control

  2814. how that

  2815. money is

  2816. used.

  2817. You ever

  2818. seen that

  2819. in the

  2820. church?

  2821. They could

  2822. neglect

  2823. leaving the

  2824. results in

  2825. God's hands

  2826. once they

  2827. give over

  2828. something.

  2829. And can

  2830. sometimes

  2831. overgive,

  2832. do too

  2833. much, like

  2834. bankrupt

  2835. themselves in

  2836. the process.

  2837. I knew

  2838. a guy

  2839. that

  2840. biggest

  2841. heart in

  2842. the world

  2843. but a

  2844. tiny wallet.

  2845. And he

  2846. would just

  2847. like, dude,

  2848. you need to

  2849. save some

  2850. of that for

  2851. your family,

  2852. okay?

  2853. So he

  2854. was just

  2855. always wanting

  2856. to help

  2857. people.

  2858. But again,

  2859. people who

  2860. have that

  2861. gift don't

  2862. have to be

  2863. wealthy.

  2864. So next

  2865. week, we'll

  2866. talk about

  2867. leadership,

  2868. mercy, and

  2869. prophecy, and

  2870. then we'll

  2871. jump into the

  2872. next passage.

  2873. But thank

  2874. you for

  2875. bearing with

  2876. me.

  2877. I appreciate

  2878. it.

  2879. But yeah,

  2880. we need to

  2881. have these

  2882. conversations

  2883. about our

  2884. gifting and

  2885. functioning in

  2886. the body.

  2887. We're all

  2888. members of

  2889. one another.

  2890. Each one of

  2891. you has been

  2892. given gifts,

  2893. and it

  2894. should be an

  2895. honor to

  2896. employ that

  2897. in the work

  2898. of the

  2899. church.

  2900. It's not

  2901. just the

  2902. people up

  2903. here.

  2904. It's you.

  2905. It's all

  2906. of us

  2907. serving Christ

  2908. together.

  2909. So pray

  2910. with me.
